  5. Good morning, you may be seated.

  6. If you have your Bibles, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to join us in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  7. chapter 5, is where we will be here in just a moment.

  8. We'll be reading starting in verse 43.

  9. If you don't have a copy of a Bible, we do have some free ones that are available.

  10. They are back at the Connections desk, and whether you are a first-time guest or a long-time

  11. member, if you don't have a copy of God's Word, we want you to have one.

  12. And so please stop by there after the service is over with and pick one of those up.

  13. They are free.

  14. We would love for you to be able to have one of those.

  15. Well, I want to state a truth that I believe is difficult for all of us to actually apply

  16. in our life.

  17. that sometimes doing things that feel unnatural can benefit you greatly.

  18. Doing things that seem unnatural can benefit you greatly.

  19. I was sitting on my phone, full confession, this week, right?

  20. Sitting on my phone, and I'm lost in this motion with looking at some videos.

  21. And a video popped up, and it said, are you not a morning person?

  22. I need to watch that video.

  23. When Aaron and I, when we both wake up in the morning, if you want to know what that looks

  24. like, the older we get, I just kind of picture like we kind of resemble getting out of bed

  25. kind of looks like zombies, right?

  26. Like, the hair's all over the place.

  27. We're dragging a leg, you know?

  28. And there's just grunts that are happening, right?

  29. So I'm not a morning person.

  30. It takes me a long time for my brain to get up and get going.

  31. It takes me even more time to get where I feel like I'm ready to talk and ready to engage with people.

  32. And so I thought, well, this may be beneficial.

  33. Aaron's a lot quicker at that.

  34. Like, once she gets up and gets going, like, the first sip of coffee hits her mouth,

  35. and she's ready to go and tackle the day.

  36. And for me, there's a lot more involved in the process to get me going.

  37. And so here's what this video said.

  38. In order to become a morning person, if you, if the first thing you do,

  39. if you will brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand,

  40. and I thought, there's no way that's true, but I got some time to kill.

  41. So let's see what Google has to say about this.

  42. Now, I'm not a dentist, a scientist.

  43. I'm none of these things.

  44. But through the help of AI and Google, I checked this out,

  45. and there seems to be some legitimacy to it.

  46. One thing that I read was said that brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand,

  47. if you do it first thing in the morning,

  48. it will cause your brain to wake up faster,

  49. causing you to have more physical energy and mental energy throughout the course of the day.

  50. Right?

  51. Number two.

  52. Oh, there's more.

  53. There's four things.

  54. Number two.

  55. It engages the part of your brain that produces calmness.

  56. So throughout the course of the day,

  57. you have less stress in your life

  58. if you will brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand.

  59. Number three.

  60. It forces the brain to break automatic routines

  61. and therefore will help you in building both memory and focus throughout the course of the day.

  62. If all you'll do is do this.

  63. I'm right-handed, right?

  64. All right.

  65. Number four.

  66. It engages brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand.

  67. It engages the creative part of your brain.

  68. And as a result, will spark more creativity in you.

  69. The last thing it does.

  70. From experience.

  71. It will cause you to get a massive amount of toothpaste in your beard.

  72. All right?

  73. For some of us, that's a problem.

  74. For others, not so much.

  75. So you're asking me,

  76. well, Bo, did you try it?

  77. I did.

  78. For one day.

  79. For one day.

  80. And I was like, this just isn't worth it.

  81. Right?

  82. Like, I can't do this.

  83. Right?

  84. Like, this is not really what I want to be a part of,

  85. what I want to be about.

  86. Right?

  87. What would have taken a certain amount of time.

  88. I don't want to say how long it takes me to brush my teeth

  89. because I don't want some of you to judge me.

  90. Right?

  91. It took longer than that in order to feel like I'd accomplished anything.

  92. And even though the course of the day, it didn't.

  93. Why in the world am I doing this?

  94. Well, Jesus, so far in the Sermon on the Mount,

  95. has been laying forth some kingdom characteristics

  96. for those who choose to follow him as king.

  97. Jesus already said, here's how you follow me.

  98. Repent.

  99. Repent.

  100. Repent.

  101. And now within that,

  102. and this kingdom culture that he's calling them to,

  103. what he's pressing into is that he's commanding them

  104. to do things differently than what they've been taught

  105. and what may seem natural to them.

  106. And I would argue that verses 43 through 48

  107. during the time of Christ and during the time of today

  108. is probably one of those things

  109. in the commands that he's called us to

  110. that calls us to go,

  111. but I don't know about that.

  112. That's more uncomfortable than brushing your teeth

  113. with your opposite hand.

  114. So let's read verses 43 through 48.

  115. You have heard that it was said,

  116. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  117. But I say to you,

  118. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

  119. so that you may be sons of your father who is in heaven.

  120. For he makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good

  121. and send rain on the just and on the unjust.

  122. For if you love those who love you,

  123. what reward do you have?

  124. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  125. And if you greet only your brothers,

  126. what more are you doing than others?

  127. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  128. You, therefore, must be perfect

  129. as your heavenly father is perfect.

  130. Now this is the last of Jesus' part

  131. in the Sermon on the Mount

  132. where he is saying,

  133. you have heard it was said,

  134. but I say to you.

  135. And in this moment,

  136. I believe that he cuts to the heart of his audience.

  137. What Jesus is doing is twofold.

  138. Jesus is placing emphasis on the heart of the law

  139. of what God has given.

  140. But Jesus is also drawing out

  141. the improper teaching

  142. of those who have incorrectly,

  143. oftentimes knowingly,

  144. mistaught the law of God.

  145. We're back at verses 43 through,

  146. about midway through 45.

  147. You have heard that it was said,

  148. you shall love your neighbor

  149. and hate your enemy.

  150. But I say to you,

  151. love your enemies

  152. and pray for those who persecute you

  153. so that you may be sons of your father

  154. who is in heaven.

  155. What Jesus is calling them to,

  156. what Jesus is calling us to this morning

  157. is a holy,

  158. like God is holy,

  159. and holy as in a fullness mind shift.

  160. Jesus is moving them from,

  161. you have heard that it was said,

  162. love your neighbor and hate your enemy,

  163. but I say to you,

  164. love your enemy

  165. and pray for those who persecute you.

  166. And this is important

  167. as we understand

  168. what Jesus is stepping into.

  169. Jesus is stepping into

  170. an oppressed people.

  171. And what I mean by oppressed,

  172. I mean oppressed.

  173. It's not a system of slavery,

  174. but it's pretty close.

  175. People have been beaten down

  176. and taxed and cheated.

  177. People have had their,

  178. the temples,

  179. their places of worship desecrated.

  180. People who live in an area

  181. where if I go against the government

  182. who's at rule,

  183. then they will crucify me

  184. and leave my body hanging

  185. as a reminder of those who are in power.

  186. And at the time of Christ,

  187. when people hear a Messiah is coming,

  188. they're looking for a political Messiah.

  189. It's easy to know in their mind

  190. who the good guys

  191. and who the bad guys are.

  192. It's easy to see who's on God's side

  193. and who's not on God's side.

  194. And so Jesus comes in

  195. and I bet in their mind,

  196. they're thinking,

  197. you shall love your neighbor

  198. and hate your enemy.

  199. And they're like,

  200. oh great,

  201. he's going to tell us

  202. that our enemy is Rome.

  203. And we hate him

  204. and we hate him

  205. and we hate him.

  206. Man,

  207. Jesus comes in

  208. and before he turns over the table

  209. in the temple,

  210. man,

  211. he flips up the table

  212. in their mind.

  213. You've heard it said,

  214. love your neighbor

  215. and hate your enemy.

  216. But I tell you,

  217. love your enemy

  218. and pray for those who persecute you.

  219. What Jesus is correcting

  220. is an abuse

  221. and a misteaching

  222. that the scribes

  223. and the Pharisees taught

  224. of Leviticus 19.

  225. We haven't done this

  226. for all of these,

  227. but I want to share with you

  228. what happens

  229. when culture and convenience

  230. determine the teachings of God

  231. versus God determining

  232. the teachings of God.

  233. The scribes did teach,

  234. the Pharisees did teach,

  235. love your neighbor

  236. and hate your enemy.

  237. Jesus is quoting

  238. if you had gone to a temple,

  239. if you had gone to a place of worship,

  240. what you would have heard them teach on

  241. as they were teaching

  242. out of Leviticus 19.

  243. They would have taught,

  244. love one another,

  245. love your Jewish brethren

  246. and hate your enemy.

  247. Hate them.

  248. Here's Leviticus 19,

  249. here's what this is based off of.

  250. Leviticus 19, 17 through 18.

  251. You shall not hate your brother

  252. in your heart,

  253. but you shall reason frankly

  254. with your neighbor

  255. lest you incur sin because of him.

  256. You shall not take vengeance

  257. or bear a grudge

  258. against the sons of your own people,

  259. but you shall love your neighbor

  260. as yourself.

  261. I am the Lord.

  262. Now when the scribes and Pharisees

  263. taught this,

  264. here's what they mistaught.

  265. They taught in Leviticus 19,

  266. 17 through 18,

  267. number one,

  268. that you define

  269. who your neighbor is.

  270. Well, who do I love?

  271. I don't know.

  272. Tell me who you want to love.

  273. Then that's who you love.

  274. But God never

  275. gives limitations

  276. to the word neighbor.

  277. Number two,

  278. they left off the command

  279. to love your neighbor

  280. as yourself.

  281. They would completely

  282. skip over that.

  283. Why?

  284. Because even within

  285. who I choose to love,

  286. but I don't have to love you

  287. in depth that I want to love,

  288. me.

  289. And I'm good at loving me

  290. some me, right?

  291. They left that off.

  292. And then they added

  293. while you are called

  294. to love your neighbor,

  295. you hate your enemy.

  296. You hate your enemy.

  297. Man,

  298. isn't that really reflective

  299. of our culture today?

  300. Who's for me is for me.

  301. Who's against me is against me.

  302. I'm for me who's for me.

  303. And I'm against who's against me.

  304. Here's what's ironic about this.

  305. Like, well, Beau,

  306. it doesn't necessarily say

  307. in there,

  308. in Leviticus 19,

  309. 17 through 18,

  310. to love your neighbor.

  311. Well, jump down with me

  312. to verse 33.

  313. When a stranger,

  314. pause there,

  315. stranger's not a friend.

  316. Stranger's not a friend.

  317. Stranger is an outsider.

  318. Stranger is an enemy.

  319. Stranger is someone

  320. you don't know.

  321. Stranger is someone

  322. when you're suspicious of.

  323. Stranger danger, right?

  324. Right in here, right?

  325. 1933.

  326. When a stranger

  327. sojourns with you

  328. in your land,

  329. what does it say?

  330. You shall not do him wrong.

  331. You shall treat the stranger

  332. who sojourns with you

  333. as the native among you.

  334. And you shall love him.

  335. And you shall love him

  336. as yourself.

  337. For you were strangers

  338. in the land of Egypt.

  339. I am the Lord your God.

  340. So here's what we see.

  341. In the manipulation of God's word,

  342. in the manipulation of God's word,

  343. God never said,

  344. love your neighbor,

  345. your friend,

  346. your brother,

  347. and hate your enemy.

  348. God says love.

  349. You bless.

  350. This is who we are.

  351. Now this,

  352. for you

  353. and for me,

  354. the people,

  355. Jesus' time,

  356. would have taken

  357. a change

  358. of their mind

  359. that is reflective

  360. of the holiness of God.

  361. It comes from,

  362. because this is what's best

  363. for political reasons.

  364. This is what's best

  365. for strategy.

  366. No.

  367. Because I am the Lord your God.

  368. What they taught

  369. was you define

  370. who you love.

  371. And folks,

  372. that's not what Jesus teaches.

  373. It's very interesting.

  374. The parable of the Good Samaritan

  375. found in Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  376. Oftentimes,

  377. and in repentance with things,

  378. you know,

  379. you're reading back through,

  380. I'm reading back through,

  381. and man,

  382. I realize,

  383. man,

  384. sometimes I don't put

  385. the right emphasis

  386. where it needs to be.

  387. And so many times,

  388. I know that I've done this,

  389. you've probably done this

  390. or heard this,

  391. right?

  392. We look at Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  393. the parable of the Good Samaritan,

  394. and we base all of it

  395. off of how to love someone.

  396. And can we do that?

  397. Absolutely.

  398. Like,

  399. we can draw beautiful pictures

  400. and beautiful pieces

  401. of what it means

  402. to love someone

  403. and what that could look like.

  404. But you know,

  405. that's not,

  406. the point of the parable.

  407. That's not the point

  408. of the parable.

  409. It's a truth

  410. we can draw from it,

  411. but it's not what Jesus

  412. at the heart of the parable

  413. is addressing.

  414. The purpose of the parable

  415. is who is my neighbor?

  416. Luke 10, 25,

  417. and behold,

  418. a lawyer stood up,

  419. this is a scribe,

  420. stood up to put him

  421. to the test,

  422. being Jesus,

  423. saying,

  424. teacher,

  425. what shall I do

  426. to inherit eternal life?

  427. Jesus,

  428. tell me what to do,

  429. tell me what to do.

  430. And he said to him,

  431. what is written in the law,

  432. how do you read it?

  433. And he answered,

  434. you shall love the Lord your God

  435. with all your heart,

  436. with all your soul,

  437. with all your strength,

  438. with all your mind,

  439. and your neighbor

  440. as yourself.

  441. And he said to him,

  442. Jesus says to him,

  443. you have answered correctly,

  444. go and do this,

  445. and you will live.

  446. But he,

  447. desiring to justify himself,

  448. said to Jesus,

  449. and who is my neighbor?

  450. Who?

  451. And then Jesus taught.

  452. Jesus taught.

  453. Defining who is your neighbor.

  454. Folks,

  455. who is your neighbor?

  456. Yep.

  457. Did you encounter them?

  458. Yep.

  459. Did you not encounter them?

  460. Yep.

  461. Do you know them?

  462. Yep.

  463. Do you not know them?

  464. Yep.

  465. Do you love them?

  466. Yep.

  467. Do you not love them?

  468. Yep.

  469. They're your neighbor.

  470. They're your neighbor.

  471. They thought that you would define

  472. the standard to which you love.

  473. Don't love as you desire,

  474. as you love yourself.

  475. Love is what you seem fit.

  476. You are the judge.

  477. You are the jury.

  478. You decide.

  479. Jesus says, no, God,

  480. God teaches.

  481. That you love

  482. sacrificially

  483. out of a response

  484. to how you've loved.

  485. And they taught

  486. that for people

  487. who want to live their lives

  488. and honor God,

  489. that hate

  490. was acceptable.

  491. It was norm.

  492. It was expected.

  493. And Jesus says,

  494. but not for kingdom people.

  495. Not for kingdom people.

  496. Jesus says, you don't hate.

  497. Jesus says,

  498. you love

  499. your enemies

  500. and you pray

  501. for those

  502. who persecute you.

  503. the passing down

  504. of culture

  505. rings true

  506. in first century

  507. Jerusalem

  508. as it does today.

  509. I love

  510. who I want to love

  511. based off of

  512. what I determine

  513. they should

  514. or should not get.

  515. And hate

  516. is a natural response

  517. because of what

  518. they've done to me.

  519. Jesus has already spoken

  520. that blessing

  521. of persecution

  522. and the Beatitudes.

  523. Matthew 5.10

  524. Blessed are those

  525. who are persecuted

  526. for righteousness' sake.

  527. For theirs is the kingdom

  528. of heaven.

  529. Blessed are you

  530. when others revile you

  531. and persecute you

  532. and utter all kinds

  533. of evil against you

  534. falsely on my account.

  535. Rejoice and be glad

  536. for your reward

  537. is great in heaven

  538. for so they persecuted

  539. the prophets

  540. who were before you.

  541. And now,

  542. now Jesus

  543. ratcheted it up again

  544. that as blessed people

  545. who are enduring

  546. the difficulty

  547. of the world

  548. that our response

  549. as he just shared

  550. is not an eye

  551. for an eye

  552. or a tooth

  553. for a tooth.

  554. It's not just

  555. give them your shirt

  556. it's give them your cloak.

  557. Jesus says

  558. love your enemy

  559. and pray

  560. earnestly

  561. for those

  562. who persecute you.

  563. Why in the world

  564. would he do that?

  565. Why in the world?

  566. Jesus

  567. this doesn't even seem

  568. to make sense

  569. they're not doing

  570. what you're asking

  571. me to do

  572. in return.

  573. Why should I

  574. reward their hate

  575. with my love?

  576. Verse 45

  577. so that you may be

  578. sons

  579. of your father

  580. who is in heaven.

  581. Now,

  582. what is Jesus saying?

  583. Does Jesus mean

  584. that if I do this

  585. then certain

  586. if I do certain things

  587. then I will earn

  588. my salvation?

  589. That's not at all.

  590. Is Jesus saying

  591. that

  592. I

  593. in and of

  594. myself

  595. can obtain

  596. a level

  597. of personal

  598. righteousness

  599. that makes

  600. salvation

  601. obtainable

  602. by works?

  603. No,

  604. not at all.

  605. Here's what

  606. he has said.

  607. Here's what

  608. he will continue

  609. to say

  610. is that

  611. salvation

  612. is possible

  613. by faith

  614. and repentance.

  615. That's it.

  616. But what

  617. Jesus is getting

  618. to in the

  619. calling of

  620. the people

  621. of the kingdom

  622. is that

  623. when we are

  624. saved

  625. God produces

  626. fruit in us.

  627. God transforms

  628. us.

  629. God sanctifies

  630. us so that

  631. we become

  632. more like him

  633. and less like

  634. us.

  635. So what

  636. do we need

  637. to know

  638. about the

  639. love of

  640. God

  641. so that

  642. we can

  643. love in

  644. the manner

  645. and the

  646. fashion

  647. that he

  648. does?

  649. Let's

  650. understand

  651. that in

  652. this

  653. God

  654. extends

  655. love

  656. to all.

  657. God

  658. extends

  659. love to

  660. all.

  661. Look at

  662. the second

  663. half of

  664. verse

  665. 45.

  666. For

  667. he makes

  668. the sun

  669. rise on

  670. the evil

  671. and on

  672. the good

  673. and sends

  674. rain on

  675. the just

  676. and on

  677. the unjust.

  678. John Calvin

  679. referred to

  680. this as the

  681. common grace

  682. of God.

  683. Right?

  684. The sun

  685. didn't just

  686. come up for

  687. you and me

  688. this morning.

  689. Right?

  690. The sun

  691. came up for

  692. good and

  693. bad.

  694. Hopefully

  695. that the

  696. rain will

  697. fall in the

  698. next 60

  699. to 90

  700. days.

  701. And when

  702. that happens,

  703. right?

  704. It'll fall

  705. for the good

  706. and the bad.

  707. That the sun

  708. rises regardless

  709. if you love

  710. God or not.

  711. That the rain

  712. falls regardless

  713. if you love

  714. God or not.

  715. But God

  716. in doing

  717. this extends

  718. his love

  719. to all

  720. by the sun

  721. and the rain.

  722. God

  723. loves

  724. his enemies.

  725. You're like,

  726. okay,

  727. well good.

  728. Then I'm not

  729. going to limit

  730. the sunshine

  731. for my enemies

  732. and I'm not

  733. going to limit

  734. the rain

  735. for my enemies.

  736. Jesus is

  737. teaching a

  738. principle here.

  739. The principle

  740. is that

  741. God

  742. loves

  743. his enemies.

  744. And if

  745. you are here

  746. today

  747. in the

  748. saving grace

  749. and work

  750. of Jesus

  751. Christ,

  752. can I tell

  753. you what

  754. you and I

  755. should sing

  756. praises about

  757. and what

  758. you and I

  759. should jump

  760. around about

  761. and what

  762. you and I

  763. should clap

  764. our hands

  765. about

  766. and what

  767. builds joy

  768. in our

  769. hearts

  770. is we

  771. should love

  772. the fact

  773. that God

  774. loves

  775. enemies.

  776. Because

  777. God,

  778. when he

  779. saved you

  780. and when

  781. he saved

  782. me,

  783. didn't

  784. save his

  785. friends,

  786. he saved

  787. his enemies.

  788. Romans 5.8,

  789. God

  790. shows his

  791. love for

  792. us in

  793. that while

  794. we were

  795. still sinners,

  796. Christ died

  797. for us.

  798. Romans 5.10,

  799. for if

  800. while we

  801. were enemies,

  802. we were

  803. reconciled to

  804. God by the

  805. death of

  806. his son,

  807. much more

  808. now that we

  809. are reconciled

  810. shall we

  811. be saved

  812. by his

  813. life.

  814. Colossians 1.21-22,

  815. and you

  816. who were

  817. once alienated

  818. and hostile

  819. in mind

  820. doing evil

  821. deeds,

  822. like let's

  823. pause it

  824. just for a

  825. second,

  826. like when

  827. God saved

  828. you,

  829. I don't

  830. care if

  831. he saved

  832. you at

  833. five or

  834. at 95.

  835. I don't

  836. care if

  837. he saved

  838. you in a

  839. bar or in

  840. a Sunday

  841. school class.

  842. I don't

  843. care if

  844. he saved

  845. you in

  846. a prison

  847. cell or

  848. at youth

  849. camp.

  850. When God

  851. saved you,

  852. what you

  853. and I

  854. in the

  855. heart of

  856. the depravity

  857. of who

  858. we are,

  859. we exuded

  860. this,

  861. we were

  862. alienated,

  863. hostile,

  864. doing evil

  865. deeds.

  866. He has

  867. now reconciled

  868. in his body

  869. of flesh

  870. by death

  871. in order

  872. to present

  873. you and

  874. me as

  875. holy and

  876. blameless

  877. and above

  878. reproach

  879. before him.

  880. This is

  881. how God

  882. loves

  883. enemies.

  884. Next week

  885. we're going

  886. to gather

  887. for Easter

  888. and we're

  889. going to

  890. praise and

  891. celebrate

  892. that the

  893. tomb

  894. is empty.

  895. But folks,

  896. in order

  897. for the

  898. tomb to

  899. be empty,

  900. at one

  901. point in

  902. time the

  903. tomb had

  904. to be

  905. full.

  906. And

  907. Jesus

  908. did not

  909. just die

  910. for the

  911. sins of

  912. those

  913. people.

  914. Jesus

  915. died for

  916. your sins

  917. and my

  918. sins

  919. because we

  920. were enemies

  921. of God

  922. and God

  923. loved

  924. us.

  925. You see,

  926. the world

  927. says you

  928. love your

  929. neighbor and

  930. you hate

  931. your enemy

  932. but the

  933. king

  934. says we

  935. love

  936. because we

  937. have been

  938. loved.

  939. So let's

  940. talk about

  941. reflecting the

  942. king.

  943. Reflecting

  944. the king.

  945. Verse 46

  946. through 48.

  947. For if you

  948. love those

  949. who love

  950. you,

  951. what reward

  952. do you

  953. have?

  954. Do not

  955. even the

  956. tax collectors

  957. do the

  958. same?

  959. and if

  960. you greet

  961. only your

  962. brothers,

  963. what more

  964. are you

  965. doing

  966. than

  967. others?

  968. Do not

  969. even the

  970. Gentiles

  971. do the

  972. same?

  973. You

  974. therefore

  975. must be

  976. perfect

  977. as your

  978. heavenly

  979. father

  980. is

  981. perfect.

  982. Reflecting

  983. the king.

  984. Jesus

  985. gives two

  986. illustrations

  987. here.

  988. and in

  989. the mind

  990. of the

  991. audience

  992. who

  993. would

  994. hear,

  995. Jesus

  996. chooses

  997. two

  998. types

  999. of

  1000. people,

  1001. who they

  1002. are in

  1003. their day

  1004. to day

  1005. life.

  1006. Jesus'

  1007. Jewish

  1008. audience

  1009. would have

  1010. seen them

  1011. as their

  1012. mortal

  1013. enemies.

  1014. The tax

  1015. collector,

  1016. the traitor,

  1017. the betrayer

  1018. of faith,

  1019. the one who

  1020. robs and

  1021. steals and

  1022. exudes

  1023. greed in his

  1024. life.

  1025. the Gentile,

  1026. the pagan

  1027. who has

  1028. come over

  1029. and conquered

  1030. and taken

  1031. over.

  1032. Jesus says

  1033. the world,

  1034. the tax

  1035. collector and

  1036. the pagan,

  1037. they even

  1038. love people.

  1039. They do.

  1040. They love

  1041. those who

  1042. love them,

  1043. who they

  1044. determine

  1045. deserves their

  1046. love,

  1047. but Jesus

  1048. loves all.

  1049. So is

  1050. your love

  1051. going to be

  1052. reflective of

  1053. the tax

  1054. collector,

  1055. the pagan,

  1056. the Gentile,

  1057. the world?

  1058. Or is

  1059. your love

  1060. going to

  1061. reflect

  1062. Christ?

  1063. Danny

  1064. Akin said

  1065. this in

  1066. his book,

  1067. Christ-centered

  1068. exposition

  1069. on the

  1070. Sermon

  1071. of the

  1072. Mount.

  1073. He said

  1074. returning

  1075. evil for

  1076. good is

  1077. satanic.

  1078. Returning

  1079. good for

  1080. good is

  1081. simply human.

  1082. Returning

  1083. good for

  1084. evil,

  1085. now that

  1086. is divine.

  1087. That is

  1088. divine.

  1089. That's

  1090. what Jesus

  1091. did for

  1092. us,

  1093. right?

  1094. We did

  1095. him evil.

  1096. He gave

  1097. us good.

  1098. He gave

  1099. us good.

  1100. He gave

  1101. us good.

  1102. The call

  1103. for our

  1104. life is

  1105. not to

  1106. live as

  1107. a reflection

  1108. of our

  1109. deprived

  1110. nature that

  1111. we've been

  1112. saved from.

  1113. the call

  1114. of our

  1115. life is

  1116. of the

  1117. divine,

  1118. of the

  1119. holy,

  1120. of God.

  1121. It's

  1122. human to

  1123. love those

  1124. who love

  1125. us.

  1126. It's

  1127. holy to

  1128. love those

  1129. who don't

  1130. love us.

  1131. The call

  1132. to perfection

  1133. is not

  1134. an obtainable

  1135. call this

  1136. side of

  1137. eternity,

  1138. but it's

  1139. a call

  1140. to set

  1141. our hearts

  1142. and minds

  1143. to,

  1144. to be

  1145. like

  1146. Christ.

  1147. folks,

  1148. there are

  1149. people in

  1150. your life

  1151. that are

  1152. easy to

  1153. love,

  1154. and my

  1155. guess is

  1156. you,

  1157. just like

  1158. me,

  1159. you're

  1160. loving

  1161. them

  1162. well.

  1163. But then

  1164. there are

  1165. those who

  1166. are hard,

  1167. who are

  1168. difficult,

  1169. and Jesus

  1170. this morning

  1171. is calling

  1172. you to

  1173. love them.

  1174. So how

  1175. do I love

  1176. my enemies?

  1177. Four

  1178. practical

  1179. ways.

  1180. that I

  1181. believe that

  1182. you and

  1183. I can

  1184. reflect the

  1185. work of

  1186. Christ in

  1187. the heart

  1188. of God

  1189. as he

  1190. calls us

  1191. to love

  1192. those that

  1193. we're

  1194. struggling,

  1195. that we've

  1196. determined

  1197. are our

  1198. enemies.

  1199. Number one,

  1200. seek to

  1201. serve.

  1202. Number one,

  1203. seek to

  1204. serve.

  1205. As

  1206. Jesus

  1207. washed

  1208. the feet

  1209. of the

  1210. dirty

  1211. disciples,

  1212. we should

  1213. seek to

  1214. serve

  1215. those

  1216. even

  1217. though

  1218. they

  1219. don't

  1220. deserve

  1221. it.

  1222. Number two,

  1223. number two,

  1224. speak in

  1225. kindness,

  1226. speak in

  1227. kindness.

  1228. Well,

  1229. fine,

  1230. but I'll be

  1231. kind to

  1232. their face

  1233. and nasty

  1234. behind their

  1235. back.

  1236. May we be

  1237. people of

  1238. kindness

  1239. and compassion

  1240. and empathy.

  1241. May we

  1242. be people

  1243. that what

  1244. is in

  1245. our

  1246. heart

  1247. is

  1248. reflective

  1249. on what

  1250. we

  1251. say.

  1252. Number

  1253. three,

  1254. straight from

  1255. Jesus'

  1256. own words,

  1257. pray for

  1258. them.

  1259. Pray for

  1260. them.

  1261. Okay,

  1262. that's,

  1263. Lord,

  1264. we just

  1265. need a

  1266. little dosage

  1267. of your

  1268. wrath to

  1269. kind of fall

  1270. here today,

  1271. right?

  1272. Like,

  1273. some misery,

  1274. some punishment,

  1275. some sickness,

  1276. like one of the

  1277. plagues,

  1278. like if that

  1279. could happen,

  1280. right?

  1281. Pray for

  1282. blessing.

  1283. Pray for

  1284. blessing.

  1285. Pray that

  1286. they would

  1287. be blessed

  1288. in their

  1289. family,

  1290. in their

  1291. life,

  1292. in their

  1293. career,

  1294. in their

  1295. pursuits.

  1296. They would

  1297. live in and

  1298. experience the

  1299. spiritual blessings

  1300. of the Lord.

  1301. Oh boy,

  1302. but maybe even

  1303. some of the

  1304. tangible blessings

  1305. as well.

  1306. Number

  1307. four,

  1308. number four,

  1309. share the

  1310. gospel.

  1311. Share the

  1312. gospel.

  1313. Share the

  1314. gospel.

  1315. Maybe,

  1316. theologically

  1317. speaking,

  1318. they are

  1319. enemies of

  1320. Christ.

  1321. And maybe

  1322. what God

  1323. has for you

  1324. to do

  1325. is to share

  1326. the gospel

  1327. with them

  1328. so that

  1329. they might

  1330. become

  1331. a brother

  1332. and sister

  1333. in Christ.

  1334. I'm going to ask

  1335. the praise team

  1336. and the prayer

  1337. encouragers to

  1338. make their way

  1339. on the stage,

  1340. prayer encouragers

  1341. on the side

  1342. of the room.

  1343. In closing,

  1344. I want to ask

  1345. you four

  1346. questions to

  1347. consider.

  1348. Four questions

  1349. as we take

  1350. and we look

  1351. at verses

  1352. 43 through

  1353. 48.

  1354. Number one,

  1355. who is the

  1356. enemy that

  1357. needs to be

  1358. your neighbor?

  1359. Who is the

  1360. enemy that

  1361. needs to be

  1362. a neighbor?

  1363. Who does

  1364. God need to

  1365. have in your

  1366. life so that

  1367. you see

  1368. them the

  1369. way that

  1370. God has

  1371. called you

  1372. to see

  1373. them?

  1374. Number two,

  1375. number two,

  1376. how can

  1377. you pray

  1378. that God

  1379. will do

  1380. a work

  1381. in your

  1382. heart

  1383. concerning

  1384. them?

  1385. What does

  1386. God need

  1387. to change

  1388. in you?

  1389. Bo,

  1390. they're difficult,

  1391. they're hard,

  1392. they're,

  1393. I know,

  1394. I know,

  1395. I know.

  1396. What does

  1397. God need

  1398. to change

  1399. in you?

  1400. Number three,

  1401. what act

  1402. of love

  1403. is God

  1404. calling you

  1405. to today?

  1406. What act

  1407. of love

  1408. is God

  1409. calling you?

  1410. How is

  1411. God calling

  1412. you to

  1413. serve them

  1414. right now?

  1415. And lastly,

  1416. how can

  1417. loving them

  1418. display God's

  1419. love for you

  1420. and your

  1421. love for God?

  1422. Would you pray

  1423. with me?

  1424. God,

  1425. we thank you

  1426. for the truth

  1427. and the power

  1428. of your word.

  1429. God,

  1430. the challenge

  1431. you lay

  1432. before us

  1433. is not

  1434. simple,

  1435. it is not

  1436. easy,

  1437. and Lord,

  1438. it is only

  1439. possible through

  1440. the work

  1441. of your

  1442. spirit.

  1443. Lord,

  1444. I pray

  1445. as we

  1446. wrestle with

  1447. the truth

  1448. of your

  1449. word,

  1450. Lord,

  1451. that we

  1452. would be

  1453. faithful

  1454. to seek

  1455. you,

  1456. to seek

  1457. your will,

  1458. to seek

  1459. your way.

  1460. God,

  1461. forgive me

  1462. where I

  1463. have failed

  1464. to love.

  1465. God,

  1466. forgive me

  1467. where I

  1468. have embraced

  1469. hate.

  1470. God,

  1471. forgive me

  1472. where I

  1473. have been

  1474. unkind.

  1475. God,

  1476. forgive me

  1477. where I

  1478. have been

  1479. selfish

  1480. and self-seeking

  1481. in my

  1482. serving.

  1483. God,

  1484. forgive me

  1485. when I

  1486. would rather

  1487. someone experience

  1488. the wrath

  1489. of God

  1490. than the joy

  1491. of salvation.

  1492. God,

  1493. thank you

  1494. that you

  1495. don't give

  1496. up on us,

  1497. that you're

  1498. working on

  1499. us,

  1500. or may we

  1501. respond to

  1502. you as

  1503. you lead

  1504. us.

  1505. It's in

  1506. Jesus' name

  1507. we pray.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. That's it

  1510. for this

  1511. week's

  1512. message.

  1513. Be sure

  1514. to check

  1515. back next

  1516. week for
