  5. Amen.

  6. You guys can be seated.

  7. If you have your Bible, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to join us in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  8. If you do not have a copy of God's Word, we have some black Bibles right back here at the

  9. connection table.

  10. They will be there for the entirety of the service.

  11. They'll be back there after the service is over with.

  12. So if you do not have a copy of God's Word and you want one, please go back there, take

  13. one of these.

  14. This is our gift to you.

  15. We want to make sure everyone has a copy of the Bible.

  16. Now, last Sunday was great.

  17. It was great for a lot of reasons, right?

  18. Wonderful being able to come together for Easter Sunday and worship together.

  19. Last week, if you weren't able to be here, we did have baptisms, and the baptistry is still

  20. out.

  21. And so I would like to share for us to be in prayer and praise our Spanish-speaking service,

  22. which happens 1230.

  23. They will be baptizing today, and I believe eight people will be getting baptized.

  24. So we celebrate and we praise God, absolutely, for all that He is doing.

  25. Would you pause with me for just one moment as we go to the Lord in prayer?

  26. God, we thank you for today.

  27. Lord, we thank you for this time that we could gather together, Lord, and open your Word.

  28. Lord, may I be faithful to you and to what you have for us.

  29. Father, if any of this is not of me, Lord, remove it so that you will be glorified.

  30. Listen, Jesus, let me pray.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. We are continuing on in studying of the book of the Gospel of Matthew, and specifically

  34. over the last several weeks, we have been working through the Sermon on the Mount.

  35. And when we get here to Matthew chapter 6, there's a little break in the flow of how Jesus has

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  36. been teaching for what Jesus will teach.

  37. Before we get there, I would like to share a common criticism of the church, a common criticism

  38. from the outside world, people who are not Christians, about the church.

  39. I've heard this criticism more times than I can think of.

  40. You know, the church is full of hypocrites.

  41. The church is full of hypocrites.

  42. Well, my question for us this morning is, is this a fair or unfair assessment of the church?

  43. I know oftentimes, right, when we feel like someone is attacking those or something that

  44. we love, we tend to want to defend.

  45. We tend to want to be biased in our assessment.

  46. And so if you were like me, when you hear someone say that the church is full of hypocrites,

  47. it can cause within us a defense mechanism to well up inside of us to say, oh, no, we aren't.

  48. But when we are honest about ourselves, myself included in this with you, right?

  49. Praise God, the church is full of sinners saved by the grace of God.

  50. None of us in here are deserving or worthy of God's grace, but praise God that he gives it to us.

  51. So we are saints, but sinners saved by grace, not through our work, but through his.

  52. And if the church is full of sinners, and sinners are defined sinners because we sin, and hypocrisy is a sin,

  53. then it would be fair to come to the assessment that churches can be full of hypocrites.

  54. In Matthew's gospel, Jesus is going to address this in the Sermon on the Mount.

  55. And I believe 11 different times in Matthew's gospel, Jesus addresses hypocrisy from those who would think of themselves or see themselves as spiritual.

  56. In Matthew 6, Jesus is going to call those who long for and desire to be a part of the kingdom.

  57. Remember, Jesus came, repent for the kingdom of heaven is here.

  58. He's called us to follow him through repentance and faith, and now he's going to call to reflect the kingdom ethic.

  59. To be the people of God that he's called us to be.

  60. Not out of sense of self-righteous religious practice, but out of a true heart for God.

  61. God who saves us, God who transforms us, and God who sanctifies us.

  62. I praise God that he has saved me.

  63. I praise God that in salvation he has transformed me.

  64. The old is gone, the new has come.

  65. But folks, I, like you, we are a work in progress.

  66. And it is not through our own religious might that we are changed,

  67. but it's through the working of the Holy Spirit in us.

  68. So we begin this in Matthew 6, verse 1, with a warning against hypocrisy.

    Matthew 6:1

  69. Now Jesus will not mention hypocrisy in verse 1, but he will mention it several times throughout the passage that we are going to look at this morning.

  70. So let's see what his warning specifically is.

  71. Jesus says in Matthew 6, verse 1,

    Matthew 6:1

  72. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.

  73. Now this morning we are going to look at three different religious behaviors that Jesus addresses.

  74. Three religious behaviors that were commonly practiced.

  75. Sorry, the pollens get to me a little bit this morning.

  76. There we go.

  77. Commonly practiced and commonly practiced in public by the religious elites of Jesus' day.

  78. Jesus talks about the practice of giving to the poor, of prayer.

  79. And then we're going to jump down and read verses 16, 17, and 18 and talk about one of our favorite things, fasting.

  80. All right?

  81. Now, a couple of things about these when we look at these.

  82. Number one, number one, these are not sinful practices.

  83. Don't look at this as an opportunity this morning to stop giving.

  84. Don't look at this as an opportunity to stop praying.

  85. And don't look at this as an opportunity to continue to no longer fast, right?

  86. Jesus is, in fact, assuming that these practices are happening in the lives.

  87. He will say, when you give to those in need, when you pray, and when you fast.

  88. Jesus is not releasing them from being obedient to God.

  89. Instead, what he's working on, what we will see, is the heart condition.

  90. So we'll get there.

  91. We'll get there.

  92. Number two, we are called to display our faith.

  93. We are called to display our faith.

  94. My faith should be something that I believe in, and then there should be evidence of my faith coming from me in my life.

  95. That's why in Matthew 5, 16, Jesus says, in the same way,

  96. let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  97. You see, Jesus isn't saying that our faith is this personal practice away from everyone else.

  98. That Jesus is calling us, both within a context of body of believers and also within the context of the lost world,

  99. to live out our faith in real, tangible ways.

  100. So this isn't, spiritually speaking, to become a hermit.

  101. It's not what Jesus is challenging.

  102. The challenge Jesus is giving is not if you should do them, but why do you do them?

  103. Not if you should give, if you should fast, if you should pray, but why are you doing these things?

  104. Is your obedience to God from a heart of obedience or from a heart of hypocrisy?

  105. So a hypocrite.

  106. What is a hypocrite?

  107. Sometimes I feel like we throw out words, I throw out words,

  108. and we don't have a clear understanding of the word that is being used.

  109. So Jesus will say, don't be a hypocrite.

  110. And I think when we understand this word, especially in the context that Jesus uses,

  111. it'll help us understand.

  112. You see, a hypocrite is a theatrical term.

  113. A hypocrite refers to the process by which an actor,

  114. and oftentimes within the time of Jesus and moving much forward all throughout the Roman Empire,

  115. there would not be enough actors or actresses, largely actors,

  116. to play all of the roles that were going to happen.

  117. There wasn't the makeup.

  118. There wasn't film.

  119. Everything had to happen in front of them.

  120. So what the actors would do is they would practice a form of hypocrisy.

  121. They would take masks and put them on so that you could see who they are

  122. or the character they are playing by the mask that they wear.

  123. So if you're playing one part, or if you're playing two different parts,

  124. you may have two masks.

  125. You put this mask on, and then you put this mask on,

  126. and then you put this mask on.

  127. So a person is determined by who they are

  128. and the theatrical performance they are playing by the mask they wear.

  129. One of my favorite actors of all time is Morgan Freeman.

  130. If you don't like Morgan Freeman and Morgan Freeman movies, I don't understand.

  131. I love Morgan Freeman because specifically of his ability

  132. to display many different masks as he performs.

  133. Let me throw out some of my favorites to you.

  134. Now I'm going to say the name of the character

  135. and see if you can come with me on these, all right?

  136. Hoke Cloburn.

  137. That's from Driving Miss Daisy.

  138. Sergeant Major John Rollins from the movie Glory.

  139. One I threw out to Josh Nix this morning,

  140. and he didn't get it.

  141. But if you were a teenager in the late 80s, early 90s,

  142. like I think you should know this movie.

  143. He played the character Azeem.

  144. You might know.

  145. He's the sidekick of Kevin Costner.

  146. Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.

  147. Thank you, sir.

  148. Alex Cross and Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

  149. But my favorite, my favorite Morgan Freeman character,

  150. of all time, hands down, greatest movie that's ever been made.

  151. Ellis Boyd Redding.

  152. Shawshank Redemption, otherwise known as Red.

  153. I didn't know we'd get into a dialogue about this,

  154. but I love it, right?

  155. I love it.

  156. I love it.

  157. Right.

  158. Here's what makes Morgan Freeman a great actor.

  159. I'm sorry.

  160. What did he play in Lean on Me?

  161. Who is this character's name?

  162. Principal Joe Clark, right?

  163. Right.

  164. How did I leave that one off?

  165. Right?

  166. Phenomenal work.

  167. What makes Morgan Freeman a great actor?

  168. Is he's not a principal?

  169. He's not a chauffeur.

  170. He's not a sergeant major.

  171. He's not a warrior.

  172. He's not a detective.

  173. He is not a prison inmate.

  174. But he can convince you in a movie that this is who he is.

  175. I'm going to let this question resonate with you.

  176. Are your acts of obedience,

  177. are the religious workings that is displayed in your life,

  178. are they done with a motive to convince others

  179. that this is who you truly are?

  180. Are they done with the motive of this is who you are in Christ?

  181. And your obedience is reflective of the one who has saved you,

  182. the one who has transformed you,

  183. and the one who has sanctified you.

  184. Jesus says,

  185. beware of practicing righteousness

  186. before other people

  187. in order to be seen by them.

  188. Jesus is addressing

  189. the motivation

  190. of the heart.

  191. Is it a heart

  192. of flesh

  193. or a heart of God?

  194. So the first that he speaks to

  195. is the heart

  196. the heart of giving.

  197. Would you join me in reading verses 2-4?

  198. Thus, when you give to the needy,

  199. sound no trumpet before you

  200. as the hypocrites do in the synagogue

  201. and in the streets,

  202. that they may be praised by others.

  203. Truly, I say to you,

  204. they have received their reward.

  205. But when you give to the needy,

  206. do not let your left hand know

  207. what your right hand is doing

  208. so that your giving may be in secret

  209. and your Father who sees in secret

  210. will reward you.

  211. Here's what Jesus is saying.

  212. Don't be the person

  213. whose goal and generosity

  214. is to draw attention to yourself.

  215. Don't be a person

  216. in manners of generosity

  217. to be followed with

  218. with a heart

  219. and a posturing

  220. and a mindset

  221. of look at me.

  222. And if you do,

  223. your reward

  224. is found

  225. in the moment

  226. in the praise of man

  227. and not in the glory of God.

  228. The religious hypocrites

  229. of the day

  230. enjoyed

  231. flaunting

  232. both what they gave

  233. in the synagogue

  234. and on the streets.

  235. Their means of sacrifice,

  236. their means of giving

  237. was not out of obedience

  238. to the Lord

  239. but off their own praise.

  240. We give to God

  241. because we trust Him.

  242. We give to God

  243. because we love Him.

  244. We give to God

  245. because we understand

  246. that all that I,

  247. not just all that I am,

  248. but all that I have

  249. is His.

  250. And God,

  251. I trust You.

  252. I don't trust You

  253. just with my salvation,

  254. but I trust You

  255. with my right now.

  256. I trust You

  257. with every part of me.

  258. I trust You

  259. with my bank account.

  260. I trust You

  261. with my wife.

  262. I trust You

  263. with my kids.

  264. Lord,

  265. I trust You

  266. with it all.

  267. And God,

  268. I am not giving back

  269. to You

  270. a portion that is Yours

  271. and keeping for the rest

  272. the part that is Mine,

  273. but I'm giving it all

  274. to You

  275. as You've called me to.

  276. Every dollar

  277. that is spent

  278. is Yours.

  279. Every dollar

  280. that's given

  281. is Yours.

  282. But also,

  283. we give to others

  284. so that we can show

  285. the compassion

  286. and love

  287. that was bestowed

  288. upon us.

  289. So I give

  290. and I'm generous

  291. because I'm compassionate

  292. to You

  293. and where You are

  294. and it's not that

  295. I pity You,

  296. it's that I love You.

  297. Not because You've

  298. earned it

  299. or You've deserved it

  300. because it's desperate

  301. what you need

  302. in the same way

  303. that God

  304. gives to us.

  305. And so if the warning,

  306. it is the warning

  307. of the heart

  308. that seeks

  309. self-glory.

  310. and this

  311. when we seek

  312. our self-glory

  313. is the reward

  314. instead of

  315. the glory

  316. for God

  317. that He's called us to.

  318. The second

  319. is the heart

  320. of prayer.

  321. We'll read

  322. verses 5 through 8

  323. next week.

  324. We will look at

  325. specifically

  326. how Jesus instructs us

  327. to pray

  328. starting in verse 9

  329. but let's look at

  330. the heart of prayer.

  331. Jesus says,

  332. when you pray

  333. you must not be

  334. like the hypocrites.

  335. Again,

  336. here we go.

  337. Must not be like

  338. the hypocrites

  339. for they love

  340. to stand

  341. and pray

  342. in the synagogue

  343. and at street corners

  344. that they may be

  345. seen by others.

  346. Truly,

  347. I say to you,

  348. they have received

  349. their reward.

  350. But when you pray,

  351. go into your room

  352. and shut the door

  353. and pray to your Father

  354. who is in secret

  355. and your Father

  356. who sees

  357. in secret

  358. will reward you.

  359. And when you pray,

  360. do not heap up

  361. empty phrases

  362. as the Gentiles do

  363. for they think

  364. that they will be heard

  365. for their many words.

  366. Do not be like them

  367. for your Father

  368. knows what you need

  369. before you ask Him.

  370. This week,

  371. I read prayer

  372. defined as this.

  373. A child of God

  374. talking to His heavenly Father,

  375. and listening to His Father

  376. by His Word

  377. illuminated by the Spirit.

  378. I love,

  379. I think oftentimes

  380. that you and I

  381. approach prayer

  382. like a job interview.

  383. I'm here to impress.

  384. I've got to use long words.

  385. I've got to give

  386. complicated thoughts.

  387. I've got to impress God

  388. with who I am

  389. in my prayers

  390. or in a religious sense

  391. like what we see here.

  392. I don't want to impress

  393. those who are around me

  394. instead of the beautiful picture

  395. of what we see,

  396. of what is defined here,

  397. of the simplicity

  398. of a child

  399. talking to their father.

  400. A child crawling up

  401. in the lap.

  402. A child whispering

  403. in the ear.

  404. A child sharing

  405. the affirmations

  406. and the adoration

  407. of their heart

  408. to their father.

  409. You see,

  410. the prayer

  411. for the hypocrite

  412. is not a sincere

  413. conversation with God,

  414. but instead

  415. is an opportunity

  416. for them

  417. to try to prove

  418. and try to show

  419. how spiritual

  420. they truly are.

  421. Who they are

  422. in their public prayer life

  423. is not who they are

  424. in their private prayer life.

  425. The issue

  426. is not just that

  427. their prayers

  428. are too eloquent

  429. or too long

  430. or too spiritual.

  431. The issue

  432. is that

  433. their prayer

  434. is a public

  435. performance.

  436. Their prayer

  437. comes from a heart

  438. that seeks

  439. spiritual prominence

  440. before others.

  441. Let me prove

  442. how much more

  443. spiritual

  444. I am

  445. than you.

  446. I think

  447. when we

  448. take on

  449. attitudes like this

  450. that what we do

  451. instead of impressing

  452. is that we

  453. discourage

  454. those

  455. who were

  456. desperately

  457. and earnestly

  458. trying to grow

  459. in their faith

  460. and in their obedience.

  461. And as a result

  462. they feel like

  463. their prayer

  464. is less than

  465. because it can't

  466. meet the standard

  467. of the Oscar

  468. winning performance

  469. that they just saw.

  470. Jesus said

  471. don't be

  472. in this

  473. performative mode.

  474. Don't be

  475. like the Gentiles

  476. who babble

  477. empty phrases

  478. over and over

  479. and over

  480. again

  481. to gods

  482. who do not

  483. even exist.

  484. But let

  485. your public

  486. prayer life

  487. reflect

  488. your daily

  489. private life.

  490. Number three

  491. number three

  492. the heart

  493. of fasting.

  494. Drop down

  495. with me

  496. to verse

  497. 16 through

  498. 18.

  499. And when

  500. you fast

  501. do not

  502. look gloomy

  503. like the

  504. hypocrites

  505. for they

  506. disfigure

  507. their faces

  508. that their

  509. fasting

  510. may be

  511. seen by

  512. others.

  513. Truly

  514. I say

  515. to you

  516. they have

  517. received

  518. their reward

  519. but when

  520. you fast

  521. anoint

  522. your head

  523. and wash

  524. your face

  525. that your

  526. fasting may

  527. not be

  528. seen by

  529. others

  530. but by

  531. your

  532. father

  533. who is

  534. in secret

  535. and your

  536. father

  537. who sees

  538. in secret

  539. will

  540. reward

  541. you.

  542. Praise

  543. God for

  544. you and

  545. me

  546. there's

  547. probably

  548. enough

  549. conviction

  550. in the

  551. first

  552. four words

  553. and when

  554. you

  555. fast.

  556. so let

  557. me

  558. confess

  559. here

  560. right

  561. right

  562. right

  563. this

  564. I don't

  565. know if

  566. you can

  567. tell

  568. this is a

  569. practice

  570. that I

  571. need to

  572. have more

  573. for many

  574. many reasons

  575. in my

  576. life.

  577. But what

  578. is fasting?

  579. What is

  580. biblical fasting

  581. and why

  582. do we do

  583. it?

  584. Simple

  585. for needs

  586. for this

  587. morning

  588. fasting

  589. consists

  590. of

  591. abstaining

  592. from

  593. eating

  594. drinking

  595. or another

  596. activity

  597. for a

  598. dedicated

  599. set period

  600. of time

  601. for

  602. purposes

  603. of

  604. prayer

  605. devotion

  606. mourning

  607. repentance

  608. and

  609. obedience.

  610. It's

  611. setting this

  612. aside

  613. saying

  614. Jesus

  615. you are

  616. enough

  617. and so

  618. I'm going

  619. to give

  620. up this

  621. meal

  622. I'm going

  623. to give

  624. up this

  625. time

  626. I'm going

  627. to give

  628. up this

  629. activity

  630. find my

  631. satisfaction

  632. my purpose

  633. to set

  634. my mind

  635. and my

  636. heart

  637. on you.

  638. Now

  639. one thing

  640. to note

  641. about

  642. fasting

  643. it's

  644. hard

  645. when

  646. fasting

  647. is done

  648. well

  649. it

  650. should

  651. be

  652. difficult

  653. you see

  654. the call

  655. is to

  656. fast

  657. from

  658. things

  659. that

  660. you

  661. feel

  662. like

  663. you

  664. need

  665. or

  666. that

  667. you

  668. do

  669. need

  670. or

  671. that

  672. you

  673. desire

  674. and

  675. that

  676. are

  677. a

  678. consistent

  679. part

  680. of

  681. your

  682. life

  683. so

  684. an

  685. example

  686. for

  687. me

  688. right

  689. a

  690. proper

  691. fasting

  692. would

  693. be

  694. for

  695. me

  696. to

  697. fast

  698. from

  699. food

  700. I

  701. love

  702. food

  703. I

  704. love

  705. a lot

  706. of

  707. food

  708. I

  709. love

  710. all

  711. the

  712. food

  713. I'm

  714. thinking

  715. about

  716. lunch

  717. right now

  718. right

  719. I

  720. love

  721. food

  722. now

  723. an

  724. improper

  725. fast

  726. for me

  727. I may

  728. do this

  729. this Christmas

  730. would be

  731. to fast

  732. from

  733. lifetime

  734. Christmas

  735. movies

  736. improper

  737. fast

  738. why

  739. not a

  740. fan

  741. not a

  742. fan

  743. I can

  744. watch the

  745. first five

  746. minutes

  747. in the

  748. last five

  749. minutes

  750. and

  751. know

  752. everything

  753. that

  754. happened

  755. in

  756. between

  757. right

  758. if

  759. you

  760. love

  761. them

  762. great

  763. for

  764. you

  765. they're

  766. not

  767. my

  768. deal

  769. okay

  770. fasting

  771. is

  772. intended

  773. to be

  774. hard

  775. fasting

  776. is

  777. intended

  778. to be

  779. difficult

  780. fasting

  781. is

  782. intended

  783. to

  784. challenge

  785. the

  786. physically

  787. of

  788. who

  789. we

  790. are

  791. within

  792. this

  793. as

  794. we

  795. spiritually

  796. lean

  797. in

  798. and

  799. trust

  800. him

  801. more

  802. and

  803. people

  804. fasted

  805. then

  806. and

  807. maybe

  808. even

  809. now

  810. they

  811. loved

  812. to

  813. make

  814. a

  815. big

  816. deal

  817. about

  818. it

  819. the

  820. picture

  821. that

  822. I

  823. think

  824. of

  825. and

  826. the

  827. picture

  828. that

  829. I

  830. see

  831. would

  832. be

  833. like

  834. seventh

  835. grade

  836. Bo

  837. waking

  838. up

  839. on a

  840. weekday

  841. morning

  842. remembering

  843. he has

  844. a science

  845. test

  846. and

  847. the

  848. only

  849. way

  850. out

  851. is

  852. to

  853. convince

  854. mom

  855. and

  856. dad

  857. that

  858. I'm

  859. sick

  860. so

  861. what

  862. do

  863. you

  864. think

  865. seventh

  866. grade

  867. Bo

  868. would

  869. walk

  870. in

  871. there

  872. with

  873. a

  874. smile

  875. on

  876. his

  877. face

  878. hey

  879. guess

  880. what

  881. I

  882. feel

  883. terrible

  884. today

  885. no

  886. I

  887. wanted

  888. to

  889. convince

  890. them

  891. that

  892. there

  893. was

  894. something

  895. wrong

  896. with

  897. me

  898. that

  899. I

  900. would

  901. struggle

  902. so

  903. I

  904. would

  905. walk

  906. in

  907. usually

  908. having

  909. pressed

  910. a

  911. light

  912. bulb

  913. on

  914. my

  915. forehead

  916. so

  917. I

  918. could

  919. right

  920. go

  921. in

  922. the

  923. bathroom

  924. for

  925. a

  926. few

  927. minutes

  928. make

  929. some

  930. noises

  931. to

  932. think

  933. that

  934. I'm

  935. getting

  936. sick

  937. in

  938. there

  939. right

  940. people

  941. would

  942. fast

  943. they

  944. would

  945. come

  946. out

  947. and

  948. they

  949. would

  950. mess

  951. up

  952. their

  953. hair

  954. they

  955. would

  956. dirty

  957. themselves

  958. up

  959. they

  960. would

  961. walk

  962. and

  963. look

  964. miserable

  965. within

  966. their

  967. countenance

  968. what's

  969. wrong

  970. with

  971. you

  972. brother

  973. and

  974. sister

  975. I'm

  976. just

  977. fasting

  978. for

  979. the

  980. Lord

  981. today

  982. isn't

  983. he

  984. so

  985. good

  986. put

  987. the

  988. mask

  989. of

  990. hypocrisy

  991. on

  992. they're

  993. doing

  994. this

  995. for

  996. the

  997. approval

  998. of

  999. others

  1000. Jesus

  1001. says

  1002. when

  1003. you

  1004. fast

  1005. don't

  1006. be like

  1007. the

  1008. hypocrites

  1009. clean

  1010. up

  1011. clean

  1012. up

  1013. your

  1014. face

  1015. anoint

  1016. your

  1017. like

  1018. look

  1019. good

  1020. is

  1021. what

  1022. he's

  1023. describing

  1024. look

  1025. like

  1026. you're

  1027. ready

  1028. for

  1029. the

  1030. day

  1031. and

  1032. as

  1033. you

  1034. walk

  1035. in

  1036. the

  1037. confidence

  1038. of

  1039. who

  1040. God

  1041. is

  1042. the

  1043. reflection

  1044. is

  1045. not

  1046. for

  1047. them

  1048. to

  1049. see

  1050. what

  1051. you're

  1052. doing

  1053. so

  1054. that

  1055. they

  1056. can

  1057. praise

  1058. you

  1059. but

  1060. the

  1061. reflection

  1062. is

  1063. because

  1064. I'm

  1065. dependent

  1066. on

  1067. God

  1068. for

  1069. all

  1070. that

  1071. he

  1072. is

  1073. you

  1074. see

  1075. it's

  1076. the

  1077. heart

  1078. that

  1079. seeks

  1080. spiritual

  1081. superiority

  1082. and

  1083. not

  1084. the

  1085. heart

  1086. that

  1087. seeks

  1088. God

  1089. right

  1090. Jesus

  1091. challenges

  1092. us

  1093. in

  1094. her

  1095. hypocrisy

  1096. of

  1097. why

  1098. we

  1099. do

  1100. what

  1101. we

  1102. do

  1103. even

  1104. if

  1105. it's

  1106. perceived

  1107. obedience

  1108. you

  1109. see

  1110. the

  1111. questions

  1112. that

  1113. Jesus

  1114. raised

  1115. is

  1116. not

  1117. a

  1118. question

  1119. of

  1120. should

  1121. you

  1122. or

  1123. shouldn't

  1124. you

  1125. yes

  1126. you

  1127. should

  1128. God's

  1129. word

  1130. commands

  1131. generosity

  1132. God's

  1133. word

  1134. commands

  1135. prayer

  1136. God's

  1137. word

  1138. commands

  1139. fasting

  1140. the

  1141. question

  1142. is

  1143. why

  1144. do

  1145. you

  1146. and

  1147. who

  1148. do

  1149. you

  1150. do

  1151. it

  1152. for

  1153. maybe

  1154. for

  1155. you

  1156. giving

  1157. prayer

  1158. fasting

  1159. aren't

  1160. the

  1161. concerns

  1162. when

  1163. I

  1164. think

  1165. of

  1166. the

  1167. modern

  1168. day

  1169. church

  1170. I

  1171. think

  1172. of

  1173. the

  1174. struggles

  1175. of

  1176. what

  1177. Jesus

  1178. may

  1179. have

  1180. said

  1181. if

  1182. we

  1183. were

  1184. the

  1185. ones

  1186. gathered

  1187. around

  1188. the

  1189. sermon

  1190. of

  1191. the

  1192. mount

  1193. would

  1194. he

  1195. challenge

  1196. the

  1197. reasons

  1198. why

  1199. we

  1200. serve

  1201. would

  1202. he

  1203. challenge

  1204. the

  1205. reasons

  1206. why

  1207. we

  1208. attend

  1209. would

  1210. he

  1211. challenge

  1212. the

  1213. motivation

  1214. of

  1215. fellowship

  1216. would

  1217. he

  1218. challenge

  1219. our

  1220. pursuit

  1221. of

  1222. discipleship

  1223. would

  1224. he

  1225. challenge

  1226. our

  1227. acts

  1228. of

  1229. worship

  1230. this

  1231. week

  1232. I

  1233. wrestled

  1234. with

  1235. these

  1236. two

  1237. questions

  1238. in

  1239. my

  1240. own

  1241. heart

  1242. sharing

  1243. with

  1244. you

  1245. folks

  1246. who are

  1247. you

  1248. here

  1249. for

  1250. who

  1251. are

  1252. you

  1253. here

  1254. for

  1255. are

  1256. you

  1257. here

  1258. for

  1259. him

  1260. are

  1261. you

  1262. here

  1263. for

  1264. other

  1265. reasons

  1266. and

  1267. when

  1268. we

  1269. go

  1270. from

  1271. here

  1272. folks

  1273. who

  1274. are

  1275. you

  1276. living

  1277. for

  1278. who

  1279. are

  1280. you

  1281. living

  1282. for

  1283. whose

  1284. name

  1285. is

  1286. on the

  1287. heartbeat

  1288. of your

  1289. life

  1290. whose

  1291. glory

  1292. are

  1293. you

  1294. seeking

  1295. whose

  1296. story

  1297. are

  1298. you

  1299. telling

  1300. I'm

  1301. going to

  1302. ask the

  1303. worship

  1304. team

  1305. if they'll

  1306. make their

  1307. way up

  1308. onto the

  1309. stage

  1310. ask our

  1311. prayer

  1312. encouragers

  1313. if they'll

  1314. move to

  1315. the side

  1316. of the

  1317. auditorium

  1318. are

  1319. your

  1320. acts

  1321. of

  1322. obedience

  1323. done

  1324. to

  1325. convince

  1326. others

  1327. that you

  1328. are

  1329. someone

  1330. that you

  1331. are

  1332. truly

  1333. not

  1334. or

  1335. are

  1336. your

  1337. acts

  1338. of

  1339. obedience

  1340. reflective

  1341. of

  1342. the

  1343. one

  1344. who

  1345. has

  1346. saved

  1347. you

  1348. the

  1349. one

  1350. who

  1351. has

  1352. transformed

  1353. you

  1354. and

  1355. the

  1356. one

  1357. who

  1358. is

  1359. sanctifying

  1360. you

  1361. would

  1362. you

  1363. join

  1364. me

  1365. in

  1366. prayer

  1367. God

  1368. we

  1369. come

  1370. to

  1371. you

  1372. we're

  1373. thanking

  1374. you

  1375. for

  1376. all

  1377. of

  1378. who

  1379. you

  1380. are

  1381. or

  1382. for

  1383. all

  1384. of

  1385. what

  1386. you've

  1387. done

  1388. help

  1389. us

  1390. remove

  1391. the

  1392. masks

  1393. that

  1394. we

  1395. place

  1396. help

  1397. us

  1398. remove

  1399. the

  1400. evil

  1401. pursuits

  1402. of

  1403. our

  1404. hearts

  1405. that

  1406. seek

  1407. our

  1408. glory

  1409. above

  1410. yours

  1411. it's
