  5. Well, good morning, everyone.

  6. Yeah, well, today is Father's Day.

  7. Like many of you, my father growing up was a very hard worker, long hours at his job, long

  8. hours fixing up the house, keeping up with the chores, and of course, raising us kids.

  9. And I'm very thankful for the father that I have, and I hope to be the father that he was

  10. to us, to my kids, the way he showed me how to be.

  11. And I don't know what anyone's relationship is with their father here this morning, but

  12. I am thankful we have a great father, that I have a great father, and that I have a great

  13. father-in-law.

  14. But that's not the case for all of us.

  15. And while we are thankful for good dads today, we are here this morning to talk about the gifts

  16. of our heavenly father.

  17. It should not be lost on us that he is called our heavenly father.

  18. It was Jesus, when teaching us how to pray, who first said this, saying, our father, who

  19. are in heaven.

  20. So we have permission to call God our father, and I believe we should be thankful that we

  21. can.

  22. Because God the father is the greatest father of them all.

  23. He will never leave us.

  24. He will always do what is best for us.

  25. He will love us unconditionally forever.

  26. Fatherly love, that is what we see from God the father.

  27. But we also see that from his son, Jesus.

  28. We see the same compassion from God the father coming from Jesus.

  29. And that's what we're going to learn about today in Matthew chapter 9.

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  30. It's the compassion of Jesus for us.

  31. Let's pray.

  32. Heavenly father, I just thank you for this opportunity to come to read your scripture.

  33. Lord, that we are in a country where we can openly read your scripture.

  34. Lord, that we not take that for granted.

  35. Lord, we do thank you so much for good fathers today, but we thank you so much more for our

  36. great father in heaven.

  37. Lord, I pray that he will be honored by the words that we have this morning.

  38. Pray these things in your name.

  39. Amen.

  40. All right.

  41. This morning, we'll be reading from Matthew chapter 9, and we're going to be reading verses

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  42. 1 through 13.

  43. I'm going to be reading from the NIV this morning, so it might look a little bit different

  44. from your scripture that you're reading, but it's the same.

  45. So let's open the word this morning and read from chapter 9, verses 1 through 13.

  46. It says this,

  47. Jesus stepped onto a boat, crossed over, and came to his town.

  48. Some men brought to him a paralyzed man laying on a mat.

  49. And Jesus saw their faith, and he said to the man,

  50. Take heart, son.

  51. Your sins are forgiven.

  52. At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves,

  53. This fellow is blaspheming.

  54. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said,

  55. Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your heart?

  56. Which is easier to say?

  57. Your sins are forgiven?

  58. Or say, get up and walk?

  59. But I want you to know that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

  60. So he said to the paralyzed man,

  61. Get up, take your mat, and go home.

  62. Then the man got up and went home.

  63. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe,

  64. and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

  65. And Jesus went on from there.

  66. He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth.

  67. Follow me, he told him.

  68. And Matthew got up and followed him.

  69. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house,

  70. many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.

  71. And when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,

  72. Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?

  73. On hearing this, Jesus said,

  74. It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

  75. But go and learn what it means.

  76. I desire mercy, not sacrifice.

  77. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

  78. So we're going to break this down into two sections.

  79. And as we look at verse 1 through 7,

  80. we see Jesus healing a man because of his faith.

  81. This story many of us have heard before.

  82. A paralyzed man brought to Jesus.

  83. And as we look closer to the story,

  84. I want to make sure that we don't miss something that is here.

  85. And it's scripture tells us that Jesus heals the man

  86. because he saw their faith.

  87. Now the man who was paralyzed may very well have had faith.

  88. There's no reason to believe that he didn't.

  89. But we know that he was not alone.

  90. Because what Jesus says is he saw their faith.

  91. Their.

  92. That's plural.

  93. It could be that the paralyzed man had faith,

  94. but we know he was not alone.

  95. These men who were with him also shared that faith.

  96. It is helpful often that we have four gospels.

  97. So we can see this story from different points of view.

  98. We see the same story in Mark chapter 2 verses 1 through 4.

    Mark 2:1–4

  99. And some additional information is given.

  100. It says this.

  101. Starting in verse 2.

  102. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left,

  103. not even outside the door.

  104. And he preached the word to them.

  105. Some men came bringing to him a paralyzed man carried by four of them.

  106. Since they could not get to him or get him to Jesus because of the crowd,

  107. they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and lowering the mat the man was lying on.

  108. So here's some additional information.

  109. We know there were crowds.

  110. There were four men.

  111. And that they lowered this man through the roof.

  112. And I think this creates a very interesting picture.

  113. One that shows their faith.

  114. And that's our first point this morning.

  115. It's that Jesus delights when we have faith in him.

  116. Now I have a good imagination.

  117. And it's a helpful tool when I'm thinking about these different scriptures

  118. and how they might actually play out.

  119. All that I'm about to say is not in scripture.

  120. But I imagine it would have been an encounter that could have gone something like this.

  121. We know that there had been crowds following Jesus.

  122. And we know many of them turned to follow Christ.

  123. But we also know that many of them followed him because he was healing people.

  124. And many people wanted to be healed.

  125. Now we have these crowds.

  126. And they have surrounded the house.

  127. And these men, before they got there, had made a plan.

  128. We just want to get our friend as close to Jesus as possible.

  129. Because we know that if we do that, Jesus will heal him.

  130. I'm sure they thought, easy peasy.

  131. But when they got to Jesus, the crowd was so great that they could not get in.

  132. So they had to come up with a new plan to get their friend before Christ.

  133. And it's hard to know exactly how it went.

  134. But something probably happened before their final solution of going through the roof.

  135. I think they probably would have started by asking the crowd, excuse me, we have a friend who just needs to be before Jesus.

  136. But to no avail.

  137. So maybe they thought, well, what we'll do is we'll hoist him up on our head and we'll push through.

  138. But the crowd might have been too dense.

  139. So maybe the smallest of the four guys said, all right, you three create a wedge.

  140. I'm going to throw this guy on our shoulder.

  141. We're going to power through this.

  142. They may have had tons of ideas before they came up with the final solution.

  143. This solution where they would come through the roof.

  144. I wondered on this.

  145. While I can totally see myself coming up with a plan like this,

  146. I thought, is this something that commonly happened in that time,

  147. lowering people through the roof or using the roof in that way?

  148. And a little research tells us that ancient Middle Eastern architecture,

  149. this is the way that the homes were.

  150. They were flat roofed.

  151. And there were ladders that went up the side.

  152. Often people would get up there and they would talk to one another

  153. or they would lay their fruit or vegetables out to dry or they would take a nap up there.

  154. But coming through a roof would have damaged the whole house and damaged the roof completely.

  155. So these men, again, who had faith, so sure in the result, dug through somebody else's roof

  156. to get their friend closer to Jesus.

  157. Because they had one idea, that if we can get him closer to Jesus, he will be healed.

  158. One author that I read called this a roof ripping faith.

  159. And I like that.

  160. Now I said earlier that we don't know if the paralyzed man had faith,

  161. but I believe that he probably did.

  162. He and all his friends.

  163. Because the final plan that they came up with would have required me to have a lot of faith.

  164. Okay, buddy, here's what we're going to do.

  165. I'm going to throw you on my shoulder.

  166. I'm going to climb up a ladder.

  167. Then once we're up there, we're going to dig through the roof.

  168. And once we dig through the roof, we're going to lower you down to see Jesus.

  169. I can't imagine that they would have had that plan ahead of time,

  170. where they would have bring pulleys and ropes and things like that.

  171. So getting him down probably would have been pretty scary.

  172. And that's where I feel like faith comes in.

  173. They had faith, all these men did,

  174. that all they would need to do is get their friend close to Jesus

  175. and that Jesus would have compassion on him and that he would be healed.

  176. It was their faith that pushed them to tear open the roof,

  177. to carry that man up there, to create some makeshift way to lower the man down

  178. because they knew there was no doubt in their minds

  179. that Jesus' response to this would be healing.

  180. And then Jesus follows that up by accrediting their faith as to why he was healed.

  181. This faith was powerful.

  182. This faith we see again later in Matthew 9, verses 20 through 22,

    Matthew 9:20–22

  183. as a woman suffering from bleeding

  184. knew that if she could just touch the garment of Jesus,

  185. that she would be healed.

  186. And when she did, verse 22 says,

  187. Jesus said, take heart, daughter.

  188. Your faith has made you well.

  189. And then we move on in Matthew 9 to 27 through 30,

  190. as two blind men cried out to Jesus,

  191. asking for healing.

  192. And Jesus did heal them.

  193. And he said again, according to your faith, let it be done.

  194. So a paralyzed man, a woman inflicted, two blind men,

  195. all healed as Jesus responds to their faith.

  196. So how does this apply today to our faith?

  197. Well, faith isn't something like a magical formula or a tool that we can use to force God's hand.

  198. That's for sure.

  199. We don't get to say, I have faith, Jesus, heal my physical ailments.

  200. Instead, faith is trusting in God and that he is sovereign.

  201. That he loves you.

  202. That he is using both afflictions and triumphs to perform his will on our lives.

  203. So that we will have a deeper understanding of who he is.

  204. Before we move on, we need to see that it was Jesus at the beginning

  205. who stated, I need to heal something beyond the physical.

  206. All the way back at the beginning of the story,

  207. Jesus goes to the root of the pain of this world, sin.

  208. Jesus again in 9.2 said,

  209. Take heart, my son.

  210. Your sins are forgiven.

  211. You see, Jesus started with,

  212. because the issue was sin,

  213. it was not physical pain.

  214. Jesus knew the real problem with our world.

  215. After all, isn't that why Jesus came?

  216. He came and he died on the cross for sin,

  217. not to heal the physical pain of the world.

  218. And when we accept Jesus,

  219. there's no assurance that our physical pain will go away.

  220. And while I'm spending this time

  221. and I'm highlighting the different ways that Jesus had power then

  222. and he has that same power now to heal us physically,

  223. he didn't come to heal us physically on this side of heaven.

  224. He came to heal our sins.

  225. As I look around the room this morning,

  226. I love that this is our whole body.

  227. And when I knew that today was going to be one where we all got to share,

  228. I was pretty excited.

  229. We have little kids in here with us this morning.

  230. We have the youth.

  231. We have young adults.

  232. We have older adults.

  233. We have slightly older adults.

  234. But we're all here together.

  235. And this is our body.

  236. This is our family.

  237. This is the Willow Ridge Church family.

  238. And it's easy to know that this is our body

  239. because it looks a lot like the family that I have at home.

  240. We are loud.

  241. That's exciting.

  242. We spill stuff.

  243. And that's okay.

  244. In the middle of a conversation,

  245. we're going to get up and use the bathroom

  246. or more.

  247. We're going to get some water.

  248. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

  249. Here's something else that I can see as I look around this room

  250. is that our bodies are going to respond differently to pain.

  251. What do I mean by that?

  252. There's a 10-year-old in here, I'm sure,

  253. that running full speed could hit that back wall,

  254. bounce off that back wall,

  255. hit the floor,

  256. jump up and keep running.

  257. Now, I know that if I graze that same wall,

  258. I'm going to have a bruise on my shoulder for a week.

  259. Tomorrow, when I wake up for some reason,

  260. my hip's also going to be hurt.

  261. And when I go to the doctor,

  262. of course, my cholesterol has raised.

  263. Not sure why, but I can tell you this.

  264. My body reacts differently than a 10-year-old's body.

  265. I'm going to wake up feeling broken.

  266. They're going to wake up feeling fantastic.

  267. Kids, if you're in here,

  268. just understand that you're stronger than us.

  269. But if we are both believers in Jesus,

  270. both that 10-year-old and I,

  271. and we're both saved,

  272. and we both love God,

  273. then we are both free from the pain of sin.

  274. But there's no assurance

  275. that I will be healed physically

  276. this side of heaven.

  277. But I can absolutely know

  278. that my sins are forgiven

  279. because I have faith

  280. in what Jesus did on the cross.

  281. That faith is what heals my soul from sin.

  282. And if you are a believer here with us today,

  283. your faith in the cross

  284. heals you from that sin.

  285. This is what Isaiah the prophet said

  286. in Isaiah chapter 53, verse 5.

    Isaiah 53:5

  287. It says,

  288. But he was pierced for our transgression.

  289. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  290. Upon him the chastisement

  291. that brought us peace,

  292. and with his wounds we are healed.

  293. This is what Jesus came to do for us,

  294. to heal us from the pain of sin.

  295. Now, if you're in here this morning

  296. and you have not accepted Jesus,

  297. then you are currently living in the pain of sin.

  298. And Jesus wants you to be healed.

  299. You only have to accept him into your heart

  300. in order for that healing to begin.

  301. And later we're going to have a time of response,

  302. and we're going to bring the prayer encouragers up here,

  303. and they're going to be ready and willing

  304. to walk you through the plan of salvation

  305. that Christ has for you.

  306. That you too can be healed from that sin.

  307. As John 3.16 tells us,

  308. For God so loved the world

  309. that he gave his only son

  310. that whoever believes in him

  311. should not perish,

  312. but have everlasting life.

  313. And although that's a very familiar passage to us,

  314. but we've got to know what it means.

  315. His desire is that the pain of sin

  316. does not inflict us anymore in this life.

  317. And it can go away by accepting Christ.

  318. The next point what we're going to explore

  319. is that Jesus demonstrates compassion to sinners.

  320. So as I was processing this sermon,

  321. I asked myself,

  322. and I'm asking us today,

  323. how do we treat those

  324. who we perceive as sinners?

  325. Those we might seem as messy,

  326. difficult, hard to deal with

  327. because of their sinful actions.

  328. Because I think that how we treat sinners

  329. is important,

  330. and how we see sinners is important.

  331. I think it shows a great deal

  332. about who we are.

  333. So what is a sinner?

  334. This word in the context of Matthew

  335. is used five other times in scriptures.

  336. The Greek word is hamartalos,

  337. and it stems from the word hamarte,

  338. and it literally means this,

  339. missing the mark.

  340. These people,

  341. these sinners,

  342. they're missing the mark.

  343. They're choosing to continually live in sin.

  344. They are choosing sin.

  345. And this sinful world that we just discussed,

  346. that Jesus came to save,

  347. he came to heal them.

  348. This is why how we think,

  349. and even how we talk to,

  350. and interact with,

  351. sinners may reveal a lot about

  352. how we perceive ourselves,

  353. and how we perceive Jesus,

  354. and what he's done.

  355. We read earlier,

  356. and we'll read again,

  357. Matthew 9, 10 through 13.

  358. It says this,

  359. While Jesus was having dinner

  360. at Matthew's house,

  361. many tax collectors and sinners came,

  362. and ate with him and his disciples.

  363. When the Pharisees saw this,

  364. they asked his disciples,

  365. Why does your teacher

  366. eat with tax collectors and sinners?

  367. On hearing this,

  368. Jesus said,

  369. It is not the healthy

  370. who need a doctor,

  371. but the sick.

  372. But go and learn what this means.

  373. I desire mercy,

  374. not sacrifice,

  375. for I have not come

  376. to call the righteous,

  377. but the sinners.

  378. So first,

  379. we must know this about Jesus,

  380. that this was not a one-time thing

  381. that Jesus offered compassion

  382. towards sinners.

  383. It's all through Scripture.

  384. He has compassion for the woman

  385. who's unfaithful in her marriage

  386. in John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  387. He has compassion on the woman

  388. who is anointing his feet

  389. in Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  390. And he tells a famous parable

  391. about a prodigal son

  392. in Luke 15,

  393. pointing to how the father

  394. forgave the sin,

  395. and he welcomed him

  396. back into the household.

  397. And there's many more

  398. throughout the New Testament.

  399. Jesus shows us,

  400. he tells us,

  401. he demonstrates to us,

  402. he encourages us,

  403. and then he commands us

  404. to love the sinner.

  405. Now we just talked about

  406. seeing Jesus heal blindness,

  407. paralyzed limbs,

  408. physical sickness,

  409. and for some reason

  410. that's easy for us now,

  411. and it's easy for the people

  412. of the New Testament

  413. to swallow.

  414. Good.

  415. Jesus is healing

  416. a physical problem.

  417. But when Jesus wants

  418. to heal the heart

  419. to forgive the sin,

  420. people make that

  421. more complicated.

  422. As if we have the ability

  423. or the right

  424. to determine

  425. whether or not it's okay

  426. for Jesus

  427. to heal sinners.

  428. even where he would go

  429. to heal them.

  430. And so where does Jesus

  431. go to heal the heart?

  432. He goes to the house

  433. of the wicked.

  434. He goes to the place

  435. where healing

  436. is needed most.

  437. Now I'm sure

  438. that everybody has heard

  439. about tax collectors

  440. during the Roman Empire,

  441. but I want to take a second

  442. just to make sure

  443. that we're all

  444. on the same page

  445. as to why

  446. Jewish people

  447. disliked tax collectors

  448. so much during that time.

  449. I think today

  450. taxes in general

  451. are a sore subject

  452. for a lot of us.

  453. We know we have

  454. to pay them.

  455. We don't love it.

  456. But we feel like

  457. we can pay the IRS

  458. one time a year

  459. and then we can forget

  460. that they exist.

  461. That wasn't the same

  462. as the case

  463. for the people

  464. who were in the Jewish

  465. communities

  466. under Roman occupation.

  467. They had to see

  468. that frustration

  469. every day.

  470. Though it would be

  471. the instruction

  472. from Rome

  473. to collect the taxes

  474. from the Jewish people,

  475. it would be somebody

  476. in their community

  477. that would be doing it.

  478. It would be a neighbor.

  479. And here's where

  480. it got tricky.

  481. See,

  482. Rome was collecting

  483. for the empire,

  484. but the ruling body,

  485. or the ruling body,

  486. but the Jewish people

  487. believed

  488. that their only ruler

  489. was God.

  490. So why should they

  491. have to pay taxes

  492. to somebody

  493. who wasn't God,

  494. somebody who wasn't

  495. their leader?

  496. So anytime a Jewish person

  497. was a tax collector,

  498. they would be seen

  499. as a traitor

  500. to the faith,

  501. a traitor

  502. to the Jewish people.

  503. Why would anyone

  504. want to be friends

  505. with the one

  506. who works for the enemy?

  507. But that's not

  508. the only reason

  509. that the Jewish people

  510. had contempt

  511. for the tax collectors.

  512. There was another reason.

  513. There were lots of opportunities

  514. for extortion.

  515. They clearly took it

  516. as we read

  517. through Scripture.

  518. You owe Rome

  519. 120 pieces of silver,

  520. or 100 pieces of silver,

  521. excuse me,

  522. I'm going to take 120

  523. and I'm going to pocket

  524. that 20 for myself.

  525. I think anybody

  526. would be frustrated

  527. knowing that

  528. that was happening.

  529. The Jewish people

  530. saw tax collectors

  531. as evil.

  532. Scripture even

  533. categorizes them

  534. as sinners

  535. in Matthew, Mark,

  536. and Luke.

  537. So when Jesus

  538. ate with the known

  539. tax collectors

  540. and other sinners,

  541. the Jewish people

  542. were surprised.

  543. While not all Jewish people

  544. were following

  545. the teachings of Jesus,

  546. he was a rabbi

  547. and they expected him

  548. to keep better company.

  549. They were angry with him

  550. that he did this.

  551. And then this is where

  552. we get to see

  553. Jesus' incredible response

  554. to that

  555. in 9-2

  556. where he says this,

  557. excuse me, 9-12

  558. where he says this,

  559. on hearing this,

  560. Jesus said,

  561. it is not the healthy

  562. who need a doctor

  563. but the sick.

  564. He's explaining

  565. to the people

  566. that a

  567. spiritual need

  568. needs a spiritual

  569. doctor,

  570. that he has come

  571. to heal them

  572. spiritually.

  573. And then Jesus speaks

  574. in verse 13,

  575. but go and learn

  576. what this means.

  577. I desire mercy,

  578. not sacrifice,

  579. for I have not come

  580. to call the righteous

  581. but sinners.

  582. The Jewish leader

  583. would have taken note

  584. of this statement

  585. because it's something

  586. that they had heard

  587. before.

  588. Now to understand

  589. what's going on here,

  590. we have to understand

  591. the word mercy.

  592. Mercy in the Greek word

  593. is eleos

  594. and it's translated

  595. often mercy

  596. but it's got other

  597. translations as well.

  598. It's translated

  599. tender mercy.

  600. It's translated

  601. compassion

  602. and in several instances

  603. it's translated

  604. love.

  605. So when we hear

  606. the word mercy,

  607. we know that it is

  608. an act of withholding

  609. punishment from somebody.

  610. Mercy is withholding

  611. punishment that is

  612. deserved.

  613. So when we read this,

  614. we may think

  615. Jesus is saying

  616. I am withholding

  617. the punishment

  618. you deserve

  619. but Jesus is saying

  620. much more than that.

  621. He is saying

  622. I desire compassion

  623. and I'm going

  624. to show compassion

  625. but to who

  626. is he showing

  627. this compassion?

  628. Well, Jesus desires

  629. to show compassion

  630. to others.

  631. He desires us

  632. to show compassion

  633. to others

  634. and we have already

  635. established in this chapter

  636. who those others are.

  637. They're sinners.

  638. Jesus desires

  639. we have compassion

  640. towards sinners.

  641. Known sinners.

  642. So I ask myself

  643. are we sure

  644. that this is what he means?

  645. That we have this compassion

  646. towards known sinners?

  647. And the answer is yes

  648. because he says it

  649. but he also does it.

  650. He says mercy,

  651. love,

  652. compassion

  653. towards sinners.

  654. then he eats

  655. with sinners,

  656. with traitors,

  657. with thieves,

  658. with liars.

  659. In other scripture

  660. he shows compassion

  661. to those caught

  662. in all sorts

  663. of sinful acts.

  664. You see,

  665. Jesus is forever

  666. the teacher,

  667. he's forever

  668. the leader,

  669. he's forever

  670. the pastor

  671. and he's forever

  672. the example setter

  673. of what he wants

  674. us to do,

  675. how he wants

  676. us to live.

  677. His desire

  678. is that we show

  679. compassion

  680. towards sinners

  681. so much so

  682. that he did it

  683. as the example

  684. for us.

  685. So as I took

  686. stock in myself

  687. and I'm going to ask

  688. you to do the same,

  689. how do you view

  690. others?

  691. How do we view

  692. others?

  693. How do I view

  694. others?

  695. More importantly,

  696. how do I view

  697. sinners?

  698. Now we all know

  699. that sin is sin

  700. but do we

  701. divide

  702. different sins

  703. and different

  704. sinners?

  705. Do we categorize

  706. the sinner?

  707. Well this sinner

  708. is speeding

  709. in a car,

  710. that's a little sin

  711. so that's okay,

  712. I'll still hang out

  713. with them.

  714. They steal

  715. or they lie,

  716. well that's a little

  717. bit of a bigger sin

  718. maybe,

  719. so we're not going

  720. to hang out

  721. with them as much

  722. but we'll still

  723. like them.

  724. But what about

  725. a traitor?

  726. This is the word

  727. that the Jewish

  728. people use

  729. to describe

  730. tax collector.

  731. Well I would argue

  732. this is a big sin.

  733. How do we view

  734. them now?

  735. Do we view

  736. a traitor

  737. with all the

  738. anger that wells

  739. up within our

  740. souls?

  741. You betrayed me,

  742. you betrayed

  743. our country,

  744. you betrayed

  745. our God

  746. but then how

  747. does Jesus

  748. view them?

  749. The great thing

  750. is we don't

  751. have to wonder,

  752. we just have to

  753. open scripture

  754. and we find out.

  755. He showed

  756. mercy,

  757. he showed

  758. mercy.

  759. So is this

  760. us?

  761. How are we

  762. approaching

  763. sinners in our

  764. own lives?

  765. Do we seek

  766. out to share

  767. the gospel

  768. with them?

  769. Is there

  770. anyone in

  771. our life

  772. that we're

  773. refusing

  774. to show

  775. that mercy

  776. towards?

  777. We don't

  778. want to,

  779. maybe it's

  780. a parent,

  781. maybe it's

  782. a child,

  783. maybe it's

  784. a close

  785. friend.

  786. We are

  787. not called

  788. of course

  789. to accept

  790. their sin

  791. but we

  792. are called

  793. to show

  794. Christ's

  795. love to

  796. them

  797. because that's

  798. what he

  799. would want.

  800. He would

  801. want them

  802. to see

  803. the sin

  804. in their

  805. life but

  806. more importantly

  807. he'd want

  808. them to

  809. come to

  810. him.

  811. Then he

  812. will help

  813. show them

  814. that sin

  815. and walk

  816. them through

  817. that.

  818. So do we

  819. have that?

  820. Think about

  821. the sinners

  822. in your life.

  823. Do you

  824. avoid them?

  825. Do you

  826. yell at

  827. them?

  828. Do you

  829. write them

  830. off?

  831. Or do

  832. we show

  833. compassion?

  834. Do we

  835. show love?

  836. The truth

  837. is preparing

  838. to preach

  839. a sermon

  840. is a lot

  841. of fun.

  842. Delivering

  843. is a little

  844. bit more

  845. difficult.

  846. But reading

  847. how this

  848. story plays

  849. out is

  850. amazing.

  851. And when

  852. we see

  853. what Jesus

  854. said and

  855. why the

  856. Pharisees

  857. would have

  858. taken note

  859. is because

  860. he's quoting

  861. Hosea the

  862. Old Testament

  863. prophet as

  864. he says

  865. I desire

  866. mercy and

  867. not sacrifice.

  868. That's in

  869. Hosea 6.

  870. And understanding

  871. the context

  872. of what's

  873. going on

  874. in Hosea

  875. and what's

  876. going on

  877. in Matthew

  878. they share

  879. a common

  880. thread.

  881. In Hosea

  882. they didn't

  883. want sinners

  884. to be around

  885. people.

  886. And the

  887. Jewish leaders

  888. at that time

  889. were showing

  890. like they

  891. were great

  892. people but

  893. they weren't

  894. following God.

  895. And then the

  896. same thing is

  897. happening again

  898. in Matthew.

  899. In Matthew

  900. these Pharisees

  901. these Sadducees

  902. they were not

  903. following God.

  904. they were

  905. instead putting

  906. on a

  907. religious

  908. front.

  909. And in

  910. that they

  911. were questioning

  912. what Jesus

  913. was doing.

  914. That's why

  915. Hosea said

  916. this prayer.

  917. He said

  918. that he

  919. trusts the

  920. love of

  921. God and

  922. he sees

  923. loving hand

  924. of God

  925. in correcting

  926. people.

  927. Though they

  928. are in sin

  929. he wants

  930. to bring

  931. them out

  932. of this.

  933. While God

  934. does desire

  935. a loyal

  936. loving

  937. relationship

  938. with us

  939. it

  940. doesn't

  941. come

  942. from

  943. spiritual

  944. rituals.

  945. That was

  946. in Hosea

  947. and now

  948. we jump

  949. back to

  950. Matthew

  951. and the

  952. same

  953. thing

  954. is

  955. happening.

  956. Jesus

  957. is

  958. addressing

  959. the

  960. Jewish

  961. leaders

  962. of the

  963. time

  964. and

  965. they're

  966. questioning

  967. him

  968. why

  969. on earth

  970. would

  971. you

  972. do

  973. this

  974. thing?

  975. Why

  976. would

  977. you

  978. sit

  979. with

  980. sinners?

  981. Why

  982. would

  983. you

  984. eat

  985. with

  986. known

  987. tax

  988. collectors?

  989. See

  990. these

  991. leaders

  992. of the

  993. Old

  994. Testament

  995. and

  996. these

  997. leaders

  998. of

  999. the

  1000. New

  1001. Testament

  1002. they

  1003. had

  1004. the

  1005. same

  1006. issue

  1007. they

  1008. had

  1009. the

  1010. same

  1011. mindset.

  1012. Sinners

  1013. should

  1014. be

  1015. avoided.

  1016. Sinners

  1017. should

  1018. be

  1019. cast

  1020. out.

  1021. We

  1022. need

  1023. to

  1024. stay

  1025. away

  1026. from

  1027. them

  1028. and

  1029. specifically

  1030. the

  1031. Jewish

  1032. leaders

  1033. would

  1034. have

  1035. said

  1036. we'll

  1037. have

  1038. nothing

  1039. to

  1040. do

  1041. with

  1042. them.

  1043. So

  1044. Jesus

  1045. comes

  1046. in

  1047. with

  1048. a

  1049. desire

  1050. to

  1051. change

  1052. that

  1053. view.

  1054. So

  1055. it

  1056. got

  1057. me

  1058. thinking

  1059. how

  1060. would

  1061. we

  1062. view

  1063. Jesus

  1064. today

  1065. in

  1066. that

  1067. same

  1068. scenario?

  1069. How

  1070. would

  1071. we

  1072. look

  1073. at

  1074. Jesus

  1075. today

  1076. if

  1077. he

  1078. was

  1079. sitting

  1080. with

  1081. a

  1082. known

  1083. sinner?

  1084. So

  1085. I ask

  1086. you to

  1087. think

  1088. in your

  1089. mind

  1090. of a

  1091. sin

  1092. that

  1093. really

  1094. bothers

  1095. you.

  1096. Something

  1097. when you

  1098. hear

  1099. about

  1100. it

  1101. gets

  1102. to

  1103. the

  1104. middle

  1105. of

  1106. the

  1107. core

  1108. of

  1109. your

  1110. body

  1111. and

  1112. you

  1113. just

  1114. makes

  1115. you

  1116. so

  1117. angry.

  1118. Now

  1119. let's

  1120. say

  1121. that

  1122. sinner

  1123. is

  1124. your

  1125. next

  1126. door

  1127. neighbor

  1128. and

  1129. the

  1130. love

  1131. compassion

  1132. and

  1133. forgiveness.

  1134. He

  1135. wants

  1136. to

  1137. and

  1138. he

  1139. has

  1140. the

  1141. power

  1142. to

  1143. forgive

  1144. them.

  1145. If

  1146. you

  1147. saw

  1148. that

  1149. today

  1150. if

  1151. I

  1152. saw

  1153. that

  1154. today

  1155. would

  1156. that

  1157. make

  1158. us

  1159. angry

  1160. at

  1161. Jesus

  1162. for

  1163. what

  1164. he's

  1165. doing?

  1166. We

  1167. would

  1168. think

  1169. how

  1170. dare

  1171. you

  1172. do

  1173. this?

  1174. Don't

  1175. you

  1176. know

  1177. what

  1178. that

  1179. person

  1180. has

  1181. done

  1182. many

  1183. times

  1184. or

  1185. just

  1186. once?

  1187. That

  1188. person

  1189. in

  1190. our

  1191. life

  1192. that

  1193. sinner

  1194. in

  1195. our

  1196. life

  1197. who

  1198. has

  1199. done

  1200. that

  1201. thing?

  1202. We

  1203. may

  1204. even

  1205. try

  1206. to

  1207. rationalize

  1208. it.

  1209. Well

  1210. Jesus

  1211. may

  1212. not

  1213. know

  1214. what

  1215. that

  1216. person

  1217. has

  1218. done

  1219. because

  1220. obviously

  1221. if

  1222. he

  1223. knew

  1224. he

  1225. wouldn't

  1226. go

  1227. in

  1228. there.

  1229. He

  1230. wouldn't

  1231. sit

  1232. with

  1233. them.

  1234. And

  1235. this

  1236. was

  1237. deeply

  1238. convicting

  1239. es

  1240. to

  1241. me

  1242. as

  1243. I

  1244. prepared

  1245. this

  1246. this

  1247. week.

  1248. When

  1249. I

  1250. look

  1251. around

  1252. the

  1253. world

  1254. I

  1255. see

  1256. sin

  1257. everywhere.

  1258. I

  1259. see

  1260. sinners

  1261. everywhere

  1262. in

  1263. workplaces

  1264. in

  1265. schools

  1266. in

  1267. towns

  1268. in

  1269. our

  1270. city

  1271. in

  1272. our

  1273. country

  1274. in

  1275. the

  1276. world.

  1277. And

  1278. a lot

  1279. of

  1280. times

  1281. I

  1282. just

  1283. get

  1284. angry.

  1285. I

  1286. get

  1287. angry

  1288. because

  1289. I

  1290. think

  1291. what

  1292. these

  1293. men

  1294. and

  1295. women

  1296. have

  1297. done

  1298. these

  1299. hideous

  1300. sins

  1301. that

  1302. they

  1303. have

  1304. done

  1305. makes

  1306. me

  1307. so

  1308. angry

  1309. that

  1310. I

  1311. want

  1312. to

  1313. turn

  1314. off

  1315. the

  1316. news.

  1317. I

  1318. don't

  1319. want

  1320. to

  1321. know

  1322. about

  1323. what's

  1324. going

  1325. on

  1326. I

  1327. don't

  1328. want

  1329. to

  1330. see

  1331. it

  1332. I

  1333. want

  1334. to

  1335. avoid

  1336. what

  1337. is

  1338. happening

  1339. in

  1340. the

  1341. world

  1342. if I

  1343. can

  1344. I'd

  1345. like

  1346. to

  1347. ignore

  1348. it

  1349. I'd

  1350. like

  1351. to

  1352. pretend

  1353. that

  1354. it's

  1355. not

  1356. happening

  1357. I'd

  1358. like

  1359. to

  1360. build

  1361. a

  1362. wall

  1363. around

  1364. my

  1365. kids

  1366. around

  1367. my

  1368. family

  1369. around

  1370. this

  1371. church

  1372. around

  1373. my

  1374. town

  1375. and

  1376. I'd

  1377. like

  1378. to

  1379. escape

  1380. and

  1381. live

  1382. safely

  1383. not

  1384. having

  1385. to

  1386. face

  1387. or

  1388. engage

  1389. in

  1390. the

  1391. world

  1392. around

  1393. me

  1394. not

  1395. to

  1396. engage

  1397. with

  1398. sinners

  1399. but

  1400. that's

  1401. not

  1402. the

  1403. example

  1404. that

  1405. Jesus

  1406. set

  1407. as

  1408. Christians

  1409. Matthew

  1410. 28

  1411. calls

  1412. us

  1413. to be

  1414. evangelists

  1415. to

  1416. go

  1417. out

  1418. into

  1419. the

  1420. world

  1421. we

  1422. must

  1423. be

  1424. flexible

  1425. in

  1426. the

  1427. way

  1428. that

  1429. we

  1430. do

  1431. that

  1432. as

  1433. Christians

  1434. we

  1435. must

  1436. meet

  1437. people

  1438. where

  1439. they

  1440. are

  1441. not

  1442. where

  1443. we'd

  1444. like

  1445. them

  1446. to

  1447. be

  1448. Jesus

  1449. didn't

  1450. wait

  1451. in

  1452. the

  1453. synagogue

  1454. for

  1455. people

  1456. to

  1457. come

  1458. in

  1459. so

  1460. that

  1461. he

  1462. could

  1463. share

  1464. the

  1465. good

  1466. news

  1467. we

  1468. can't

  1469. wait

  1470. in

  1471. the

  1472. church

  1473. for

  1474. people

  1475. to

  1476. come

  1477. in

  1478. so

  1479. that

  1480. we

  1481. can

  1482. share

  1483. the

  1484. good

  1485. news

  1486. we

  1487. must

  1488. go

  1489. out

  1490. that's

  1491. what

  1492. Jesus

  1493. did

  1494. we

  1495. don't

  1496. need

  1497. them

  1498. to

  1499. conform

  1500. to

  1501. what

  1502. we

  1503. expect

  1504. we

  1505. need

  1506. to

  1507. meet

  1508. them

  1509. where

  1510. they're

  1511. at

  1512. I'm

  1513. going

  1514. to

  1515. ask

  1516. the

  1517. prayer

  1518. team

  1519. and

  1520. the

  1521. band

  1522. to

  1523. come

  1524. up

  1525. and

  1526. I

  1527. want

  1528. to

  1529. spend

  1530. a

  1531. moment

  1532. here

  1533. and

  1534. just

  1535. recap

  1536. what

  1537. chapter

  1538. nine

  1539. teaches

  1540. us

  1541. Jesus

  1542. has

  1543. a

  1544. desire

  1545. that

  1546. we

  1547. have

  1548. faith

  1549. in

  1550. him

  1551. his

  1552. healing

  1553. power

  1554. in

  1555. our

  1556. sinful

  1557. lives

  1558. that

  1559. Jesus

  1560. desires

  1561. us

  1562. to

  1563. have

  1564. compassion

  1565. towards

  1566. sinners

  1567. meaning

  1568. we

  1569. must

  1570. meet

  1571. them

  1572. where

  1573. they

  1574. are

  1575. in

  1576. their

  1577. brokenness

  1578. with

  1579. compassion

  1580. and

  1581. Jesus

  1582. desires

  1583. more

  1584. than

  1585. that

  1586. he

  1587. desires

  1588. that

  1589. we

  1590. share

  1591. his

  1592. love

  1593. with

  1594. this

  1595. entire

  1596. world

  1597. what

  1598. we

  1599. can't

  1600. do

  1601. is

  1602. we

  1603. can't

  1604. say

  1605. Jesus

  1606. saved

  1607. me

  1608. but

  1609. now

  1610. I

  1611. don't

  1612. have

  1613. to

  1614. do

  1615. anything

  1616. with

  1617. that

  1618. we

  1619. can't

  1620. say

  1621. that

  1622. Jesus

  1623. saved

  1624. me

  1625. but

  1626. I

  1627. really

  1628. did

  1629. it

  1630. all

  1631. on

  1632. my

  1633. own

  1634. we

  1635. cannot

  1636. say

  1637. that

  1638. God

  1639. has

  1640. saved

  1641. me

  1642. but

  1643. I

  1644. don't

  1645. need

  1646. to

  1647. help

  1648. others

  1649. find

  1650. this

  1651. same

  1652. salvation

  1653. we

  1654. cannot

  1655. say

  1656. God

  1657. has

  1658. saved

  1659. me

  1660. so

  1661. now

  1662. I

  1663. will

  1664. cut

  1665. off

  1666. the

  1667. world

  1668. because

  1669. it's

  1670. sinful

  1671. and

  1672. I'll

  1673. protect

  1674. myself

  1675. to

  1676. live

  1677. safely

  1678. scripture

  1679. calls us

  1680. to be

  1681. transformed

  1682. that

  1683. we are

  1684. a new

  1685. creation

  1686. in

  1687. Christ

  1688. and

  1689. he

  1690. calls

  1691. us

  1692. to

  1693. follow

  1694. his

  1695. example

  1696. to

  1697. show

  1698. Christ's

  1699. love

  1700. to

  1701. this

  1702. world

  1703. that

  1704. love

  1705. that

  1706. he

  1707. demonstrates

  1708. that

  1709. same

  1710. love

  1711. that

  1712. his

  1713. father

  1714. demonstrated

  1715. to

  1716. us

  1717. by

  1718. sending

  1719. his

  1720. own

  1721. son

  1722. into

  1723. this

  1724. broken

  1725. world

  1726. to

  1727. save

  1728. sinners

  1729. so

  1730. church

  1731. this

  1732. is

  1733. our

  1734. challenge

  1735. do

  1736. you

  1737. have

  1738. the

  1739. faith

  1740. that

  1741. Jesus

  1742. points

  1743. out

  1744. that

  1745. no

  1746. matter

  1747. what

  1748. is

  1749. going

  1750. on

  1751. in

  1752. our

  1753. lives

  1754. in

  1755. our

  1756. world

  1757. that

  1758. our

  1759. desire

  1760. is

  1761. to

  1762. be

  1763. close

  1764. to

  1765. him

  1766. like

  1767. the

  1768. men

  1769. that

  1770. we

  1771. read

  1772. about

  1773. the

  1774. story

  1775. who

  1776. were

  1777. willing

  1778. to

  1779. carry

  1780. a

  1781. man

  1782. up

  1783. onto

  1784. a

  1785. roof

  1786. and

  1787. lower

  1788. him

  1789. down

  1790. simply

  1791. so

  1792. that

  1793. he

  1794. can

  1795. be

  1796. in

  1797. the

  1798. presence

  1799. of

  1800. the

  1801. Lord

  1802. is

  1803. that

  1804. where

  1805. we

  1806. are

  1807. do

  1808. we

  1809. desire

  1810. that

  1811. badly

  1812. to

  1813. be

  1814. in

  1815. the

  1816. presence

  1817. of

  1818. the

  1819. Lord

  1820. also

  1821. do

  1822. we

  1823. have

  1824. the

  1825. willingness

  1826. to

  1827. see

  1828. sinners

  1829. the

  1830. same

  1831. way

  1832. that

  1833. God

  1834. sees

  1835. sinners

  1836. the

  1837. same

  1838. way

  1839. that

  1840. Jesus

  1841. interacted

  1842. with

  1843. sinners

  1844. as

  1845. someone

  1846. who

  1847. needs

  1848. God

  1849. not

  1850. a

  1851. sinner

  1852. that

  1853. should

  1854. be

  1855. cast

  1856. out

  1857. and

  1858. then

  1859. the

  1860. follow

  1861. up

  1862. question

  1863. of

  1864. that

  1865. is

  1866. are

  1867. you

  1868. willing

  1869. to

  1870. share

  1871. the

  1872. gospel

  1873. with

  1874. those

  1875. sinners

  1876. to

  1877. change

  1878. somebody's

  1879. life

  1880. we

  1881. can't

  1882. hide

  1883. behind

  1884. fear

  1885. we

  1886. have

  1887. to

  1888. live

  1889. in

  1890. the

  1891. freedom

  1892. that

  1893. God

  1894. has

  1895. provided

  1896. we

  1897. have

  1898. to

  1899. live

  1900. in

  1901. the

  1902. place

  1903. where

  1904. God

  1905. has

  1906. showed

  1907. the

  1908. example

  1909. be

  1910. willing

  1911. to

  1912. go

  1913. in

  1914. where

  1915. it's

  1916. going

  1917. to

  1918. be

  1919. difficult

  1920. let's

  1921. pray

  1922. Heavenly

  1923. Father

  1924. I just

  1925. thank you

  1926. for an

  1927. opportunity

  1928. to

  1929. open

  1930. your

  1931. word

  1932. Lord

  1933. I

  1934. thank you

  1935. for an

  1936. opportunity

  1937. to

  1938. see

  1939. what

  1940. you

  1941. have

  1942. for

  1943. us

  1944. Lord

  1945. let

  1946. the

  1947. words

  1948. that

  1949. are

  1950. true

  1951. sink

  1952. in

  1953. our

  1954. hearts

  1955. challenge

  1956. us

  1957. this

  1958. week

  1959. Lord

  1960. to

  1961. live

  1962. in

  1963. the

  1964. faith

  1965. but

  1966. also

  1967. to

  1968. not

  1969. be

  1970. afraid

  1971. to

  1972. go

  1973. out

  1974. and

  1975. share

  1976. that

  1977. faith

  1978. God

  1979. you

  1980. have

  1981. called

  1982. it

  1983. on

  1984. our

  1985. hearts

  1986. to

  1987. share

  1988. the

  1989. gospel

  1990. with

  1991. the

  1992. broken

  1993. world

  1994. let

  1995. us

  1996. not

  1997. be

  1998. afraid

  1999. to

  2000. do

  2001. that

  2002. God

  2003. I

  2004. pray

  2005. that

  2006. you

  2007. be

  2008. with

  2009. us

  2010. today

  2011. as

  2012. we

  2013. go

  2014. from

  2015. here

  2016. Lord

  2017. be

  2018. with

  2019. the

  2020. fathers

  2021. amongst

  2022. us

  2023. be

  2024. with

  2025. the

  2026. fathers

  2027. who

  2028. are

  2029. preparing

  2030. to

  2031. be

  2032. fathers

  2033. Lord

  2034. and

  2035. we

  2036. are

  2037. so

  2038. thankful

  2039. for

  2040. the

  2041. fathers

  2042. that

  2043. have

  2044. come

  2045. before

  2046. us

  2047. Lord

  2048. but

  2049. we

  2050. are

  2051. most

  2052. thankful

  2053. for

  2054. you

  2055. God

  2056. being

  2057. the

  2058. ultimate

  2059. father

  2060. who

  2061. will

  2062. never

  2063. leave

  2064. us
