  4. receive new episodes each week.

  5. Well, good morning, everybody.

  6. I tell you what, it feels good to say good morning to a group of people and have the accent

  7. that you just said it from come back at you, all right?

  8. If you've got your Bibles, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to open it up to Matthew

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  9. chapter 9.

  10. If you're with us this morning and you did not answer in that accent, we're glad that you're

  11. here as well.

  12. We just outnumber you a little bit, and so, but we're glad to have you guys all with us.

  13. If you don't have a Bible, I want to let you know that we do have some free ones that

  14. are back in the back right here at our connections table.

  15. We want every single person to have a copy of God's Word, and so if you do not have a copy

  16. of God's Word, or if you want to be able to follow along, this is the translation that we

  17. use on Sunday mornings.

  18. If you want to follow along with that, please go back there and grab one.

  19. This is our gift to you.

  20. It does not cost you a penny.

  21. I've had people ask me, I've got people at work that don't have a Bible and that want

  22. a Bible.

  23. If you want to grab one of those, please do.

  24. We absolutely love to give away Bibles, so please make sure that you go back there and

  25. grab one.

  26. It is good to be back.

  27. If you're visiting with us, I have been on sabbatical since the first of beginning of

  28. June.

  29. Some of y'all thought I was coming back in July, and we're looking forward to Josh or

  30. Dave or Joel, but y'all are going to have to settle for me this morning, but it is good

  31. to be back, and I want to thank you as a church in your kindness and your generosity for giving

  32. this to me and my family.

  33. The best way that I could describe our time together was special, and I appreciate it.

  34. Here we go.

  35. Didn't realize how much we needed it until we got into it, so thank you.

  36. Thank you very much.

  37. With that said, Matthew 9, let's start reading verse 35.

  38. And Jesus went through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming

  39. the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and affliction.

  40. And when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, for they were harassed and helpless like

  41. sheep without a shepherd.

  42. And he said to his disciples, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

  43. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

  44. Well, last week, during the last week of my sabbatical, I had the privilege, and I use that

  45. word sincerely, I had the privilege to spend it with our high schoolers on a mission trip

  46. to New York City.

  47. And that's a little bit unconventional for sabbatical, but I assured our elders that I would be able

  48. to rest and I would plan to make zero leadership decisions during that time.

  49. And we were great, it was good that we were in great hands.

  50. Joel did a wonderful job of leading our team, and Brent Hawkins did a wonderful job of working

  51. out the logistics and leading us as well.

  52. I want to tell you guys how proud you should be of your high schoolers.

  53. Your youth group as a whole, and our youth group as a whole, shows that day in and day

  54. out.

  55. But these high schoolers, they served and they served well.

  56. We had the privilege of being able to come alongside two different churches, Nueva Vida and La Palabra,

  57. Hispanic churches in Queens, and do some much-needed renovations on their church.

  58. We met the pastor of La Palabra, I met him for the first time, just to kind of give you

  59. a glimpse of what church life looks like up there, especially for pastors, so that he can

  60. afford to live, he lives an hour and a half away in Connecticut.

  61. He drives an hour and a half into his church, he pastors and cares for them, after Sunday

  62. morning service is over, you don't hear me complain anymore about my drive home, he drives

  63. two hours away to go to the second church that he pastors, so that he can return to his house

  64. in Connecticut, where he can afford to live.

  65. He was very gracious and thankful and wanted me to thank you guys for your generosity and

  66. how we served.

  67. Pastor Walter, who many of you have met, who has been here with us, and his wife Veronica

  68. from Nueva Vida, wanted me to also share with you how grateful he is and how he cherishes

  69. our church's partnership with him and his church, and wanted me to also thank you again for being

  70. able to send a team as we continually do to support the work that is there.

  71. Well, parents, if you see your kids' pictures, I heard one of our adults say on the trip, they

  72. were looking through our shared file of what we have of pictures, and there were lots of

  73. pictures of touring around and very few pictures of us working.

  74. And that's because as one of the adults says, that's because we were working the whole time.

  75. Your high schoolers put in two 12-hour days of hard work and sweat and maybe even a little

  76. bit of blood around there before we took our time to tour around New York City.

  77. Now I'm going to tell you all what, New York City didn't know what they were getting when

  78. Willow Ridge showed up.

  79. When the best people in Lexington County showed up to tour around, we visited the Met.

  80. Now I'm going to tell you, if you don't know what the Met is, I knew of the Mets, the baseball

  81. team, I didn't know of the Met.

  82. The Met, if you're not sure what it is, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

  83. And I'm just going to say, that place is classy.

  84. It got a little bit more classy when we got there, right?

  85. They've got a piece of art called the Madonna and Child.

  86. I'm not going to try to pronounce the guy's name.

  87. I did take art appreciation in college and got through it with a C, which stood for credit.

  88. This one piece of art is valued at $50 million.

  89. I made an offer, they rejected it.

  90. I had my church credit card.

  91. I figured, why not?

  92. I'm just kidding.

  93. All right.

  94. Take that back.

  95. Ignore that.

  96. All right.

  97. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge.

  98. Special time.

  99. A great, great, like historic.

  100. You see the skyline out in front of you.

  101. You look to the right, you see the Empire State Building.

  102. You look down the middle, you see the One World Trade Center.

  103. You look to the left, you see the Statue of Liberty.

  104. Absolutely beautiful.

  105. I love visiting New York City.

  106. This is my 10th trip that I've been able to go every single time on a mission trip.

  107. I love visiting.

  108. I love seeing the sights.

  109. I love meeting the people.

  110. I love serving with your youth and the youth workers who went.

  111. But I think, personally, what I love the most about New York City is, at some point in time, multiple times a day, I don't know if this happened to everybody, but it happened to me.

  112. Someone would ask this question to me.

  113. Where are you from?

  114. I don't know.

  115. I don't think I have an accent.

  116. They would disagree.

  117. And I love being asked that question because being asked that question, where are you from, leads to this question as well.

  118. Why are you here?

  119. Why are you here?

  120. And then from there, what we have the opportunity to do, what God's given me the opportunity to do, is then talk to people about Jesus.

  121. Three different conversations that I had, and I think this is applicable for a passage of Scripture this morning.

  122. I want to share about these conversations with you.

  123. Right down the road from the church that we were working at was a little corner market.

  124. I like to visit that corner market.

  125. Let's just say they had empanadas that were fantastic, all right?

  126. One day, we ate sub-sandwiches for the youth.

  127. And it was evident that there was not going to be enough sub-sandwiches for the youth and the adults.

  128. And I looked at Joel.

  129. I said, don't sweat it, man.

  130. I got a spot, all right?

  131. So the youth ate Subway sandwiches.

  132. We ate empanadas and all the things from the corner market.

  133. But I'm in there, and there's a man who's there, and he's the owner of the store.

  134. He had been there several days.

  135. We had struck up several conversations.

  136. An Indian man.

  137. And so I asked questions to him.

  138. Been there 26 years.

  139. He said, I'm from India.

  140. I'm from a region in the Northwest known as Punjab.

  141. Do you know anything about India?

  142. I said, absolutely.

  143. Told him, I said, I haven't been to New York.

  144. I've been to India.

  145. And then what he asked me is, why in the world would you go to India?

  146. And I said, oh, man.

  147. I love the people.

  148. And I love Jesus.

  149. We got this opportunity to help bring the gospel of Jesus Christ there.

  150. And this guy's not a believer.

  151. And I said, in fact, there's a church right down the road from you.

  152. Right here, man.

  153. I want to tell people about Jesus, and that's why we're here.

  154. Conversation number two, standing at the same store, waiting on my empanadas to be done.

  155. And I hear a woman behind me say, excuse me, sir.

  156. Are you from South Carolina?

  157. Guess we stick out a little bit, right?

  158. And I said, yes, ma'am.

  159. Yes, ma'am, I am.

  160. I said, have you ever been to South Carolina?

  161. And she says, no, I've never been to South Carolina.

  162. But my family is from a small town in South Carolina.

  163. She said, I bet you've never heard of it.

  164. I said, challenge me, right?

  165. Challenge me.

  166. She said, my whole family's from this small town.

  167. They still live there.

  168. It's called Beach Island, South Carolina.

  169. Quick show of hands.

  170. Quick show of hands.

  171. How many of you can get to Beach Island without using your phone?

  172. Right, right?

  173. So y'all don't even know where this place is.

  174. I said, oh, I know Beach Island.

  175. I know Beach Island.

  176. I said, in fact, when my wife, she's not from there.

  177. But when we met, she lived in a town called Jackson, South Carolina.

  178. And she said, I know Jackson.

  179. And I said, I lived in a town called North Augusta.

  180. She said, I've heard of that too.

  181. And I said, Beach Island's right there in the middle.

  182. And she said, well, what in the world are you doing up here from a town like that?

  183. Why would you come from somewhere like South Carolina and places like Beach Island and come to Queens?

  184. And it's all about Jesus.

  185. Third conversation.

  186. Third conversation.

  187. This is tourist day.

  188. We're coming off the Brooklyn Bridge.

  189. My daughter's just bought a bootleg coach pocketbook.

  190. It's real.

  191. Coming off of it.

  192. And there's food carts.

  193. I love food carts.

  194. I don't know if you can tell.

  195. Love food carts.

  196. All the food carts are there.

  197. The group's there.

  198. They're waiting on me.

  199. We get there.

  200. And kids are looking.

  201. And there's vendors.

  202. And I see this man standing there.

  203. And he's got a table about this big.

  204. And he's selling New York Knicks championship t-shirts.

  205. Now, I don't know if you know this or not, but the Knicks just won the NBA title.

  206. The Knicks have not won the NBA title since 1973.

  207. Passionate, passionate fans that love their basketball.

  208. I am not a New York Knicks fan.

  209. By any way, shape, or form.

  210. I'm a Boston Celtics fan.

  211. And I love the Boston Celtics.

  212. But something felt like it was pulling me toward this guy's table.

  213. So, I walked up to him.

  214. And he said, sir, would you like to buy a t-shirt?

  215. And I thought, you know, let's have some fun.

  216. So, I said, hey, man, you got any Celtics shirts?

  217. And he looked at me.

  218. He said, you have got to be kidding me.

  219. Like, in the thickest Bronx accent that you could find.

  220. Right?

  221. And then I smiled and was like, this is going to go one of two ways.

  222. And he smiled.

  223. And usually, if you haven't been in a place like this, like, once they realize, like, you're not going to mind anything, they're done with you.

  224. And I'm going to fault them for that, right?

  225. Because they've got to make a living.

  226. They've got to sell their t-shirts.

  227. That's their job.

  228. That's their livelihood.

  229. And I'm a Celtics fan.

  230. And I'm not buying what he's got.

  231. And I said, how's business going?

  232. How's business going?

  233. And in that moment, it turned.

  234. He said, I'm going to tell you, man, it's tough.

  235. It's tough.

  236. And then he began to talk to me about his problems.

  237. And I want to share this because I think this matters in the context of it.

  238. He then went into a rant or his frustration with politics.

  239. Now, here's what I'm going to say.

  240. As he spoke, as he talked personally, from person to person, we could not have differed more on politics.

  241. But in that moment, politics was not what mattered.

  242. I told him, as I listened to him, I said, I'm sorry.

  243. I'm sorry.

  244. And I said, can I pray for you and pray for your family and pray for your business?

  245. Now, there's people passing by.

  246. There's dollars passing by.

  247. And two men, roughly about the same age, who didn't know each other, he said, absolutely.

  248. And he reached out his hands.

  249. We grabbed hands.

  250. We prayed together.

  251. He pulled me and gave me a hug.

  252. Went our separate ways.

  253. Now, I want to be careful.

  254. I'm not telling you these three conversations so that you can go, oh, man, like, look at our pastor.

  255. Look how good he is.

  256. I mean, he goes to New York City, and he's looking to have conversations with people about Jesus.

  257. I'm not telling you, I'm not telling you, I'm not telling you that to brag on myself.

  258. On the flight, waiting for our flight back yesterday, here's the question that the Lord impressed on my heart that I'm seeking to answer.

  259. What if I lived?

  260. What if I lived?

  261. This is the personal question for me.

  262. What if I lived every day of my life?

  263. Every moment.

  264. Like, I'm on a mission trip in New York City.

  265. What if I lived every moment of every day seeking an obedience to the guidance of the Holy Spirit who's in me,

  266. to live every single moment waiting for an opportunity for someone to simply ask questions like,

  267. are you from South Carolina, and trying to see how I can leverage that into a conversation about Jesus?

  268. That's what the Lord's convicting and working in my heart right now.

  269. What if I lived every single day looking for how to take normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill conversations

  270. and turn them into conversations about Jesus?

  271. And what if you did that as well?

  272. What if we took and we longed for the everyday moments

  273. and looking at them and not trying to,

  274. how can I leverage them for my agenda, for my schedule, for my time, for my needs, for my wants?

  275. And ask God, how can I leverage them for you?

  276. What if a trip to the grocery store was an opportunity to minister to the person at the checkout?

  277. What if a trip to the DMV was an opportunity to talk and care for the person who sat beside us?

  278. What if seeing the reclusive neighbor who lives beside us as an opportunity to share hope?

  279. What if social media were to be a place where we focus on sharing the truth of the gospel and not the opinions of people?

  280. What if we woke up every single day looking and asking how God might use us to bless others and tell people about Jesus?

  281. I think when we get to the heart of Matthew 9, 35 through 38,

  282. there's this plea.

  283. As Jesus gathers with his disciples,

  284. there's this intentional plea.

  285. He's calling these disciples to do this.

  286. You see, it's not just a bow struggle.

  287. It's not just a you struggle.

  288. It's an us struggle.

  289. The problem isn't the field.

  290. The problem is there's not workers going into the field.

  291. You see, I believe that the reason why we gather,

  292. the reason why we worship,

  293. the reason why we have hope,

  294. is not just,

  295. the gospel is not simply the impact for our salvation.

  296. It is.

  297. It's the means by which we are saved.

  298. No other message,

  299. through no other person,

  300. through no other means.

  301. But for today,

  302. it's our purpose.

  303. It's our mission.

  304. It's why Jesus saved you and me

  305. and then didn't just call us home.

  306. It's why he leaves us here.

  307. So that we can take and carry the gospel.

  308. If there was no purpose for you,

  309. then he would have saved you and taken you.

  310. Because I'm going to save you

  311. and I'm going to call you

  312. and I'm going to use you

  313. and then when your purpose on here is done,

  314. then I'm going to bring you.

  315. The problem is,

  316. so many of us,

  317. and I find myself in this all too often,

  318. are living a life that doesn't have the hope of eternity

  319. impacting the moment of today.

  320. Look back with me,

  321. verses 35 and 36.

  322. It says,

  323. when Jesus went through all the cities and villages,

  324. teaching their synagogues

  325. and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  326. and healing every disease and every affliction.

  327. And when he saw the crowds,

  328. focus on verse 36.

  329. When he saw the crowds,

  330. he had compassion for them

  331. because they were harassed

  332. and helpless

  333. like sheep

  334. without a shepherd.

  335. I believe that today

  336. what Jesus wants to do

  337. in my life and yours

  338. is Jesus wants to challenge

  339. how we see people.

  340. Jesus wants to challenge

  341. how we see people.

  342. Jesus begins

  343. by seeing the size

  344. of the peoples.

  345. It says that when he looked,

  346. he saw the crowds.

  347. He didn't speak specifically

  348. into race

  349. or to gender

  350. or socioeconomic status.

  351. Here, Jesus looked out

  352. and he saw the crowds.

  353. The Bible tells us

  354. that Jesus has been traveling

  355. through all the cities

  356. and villages

  357. and I believe

  358. God's word

  359. says what it says

  360. for a purpose

  361. and it's truthful

  362. all the cities and villages.

  363. So what does that mean?

  364. What's been Jesus' journey?

  365. The best guesstimate

  366. we can get to today

  367. is that during the time of Christ

  368. that would have meant

  369. that he would have traveled

  370. to nearly 200 cities

  371. and villages

  372. with around 3 million people.

  373. living in the region.

  374. Folks, this world

  375. is a big place

  376. and it's filled

  377. with a crowd

  378. of many people,

  379. many people

  380. who need Jesus.

  381. And Jesus' instrument

  382. to carry the mission

  383. and the message

  384. of the gospel

  385. are the men,

  386. the women,

  387. and children

  388. who are gathered together

  389. in churches

  390. all across this world

  391. who are believers

  392. in Jesus Christ

  393. who are filled

  394. by his Holy Spirit

  395. who will take

  396. that message

  397. here, there,

  398. and everywhere.

  399. And God's got a crowd

  400. for you.

  401. God may have a different crowd

  402. for me

  403. than the crowd

  404. that God has for you,

  405. but what if we truly believe

  406. that God has placed us

  407. where we live,

  408. where we work,

  409. where we play,

  410. where he's sending us,

  411. where he's calling us,

  412. that God is a going God

  413. who calls his people

  414. to go

  415. and where you go

  416. that you don't carry

  417. your agenda

  418. but where you go

  419. you carry the beauty

  420. of the gospel.

  421. It's a God-sized mission.

  422. Only God can do it.

  423. And in his sovereignty,

  424. he does it through

  425. his people.

  426. God sees the size,

  427. a God-shaped mission

  428. of the crowd.

  429. Not only do we need to see

  430. the size of the crowd,

  431. but we need to see

  432. their suffering.

  433. They are,

  434. what the Bible tells us,

  435. is harassed

  436. and helpless.

  437. I think it's important

  438. to note

  439. that the one

  440. righteous judge

  441. who all of creation

  442. will stand before

  443. in judgment,

  444. that his response

  445. to the crowd

  446. is compassion.

  447. It's compassion.

  448. Folks,

  449. we live in a world,

  450. whether they know it

  451. or not,

  452. that is harassed

  453. and helpless.

  454. we live in a time

  455. where self-help

  456. is at our fingertips.

  457. Where medication

  458. can be received

  459. from a call

  460. and doctor.

  461. Where counselors

  462. can be seen

  463. in person,

  464. online,

  465. or over the phone.

  466. We have more

  467. fixes

  468. than at any point

  469. in time

  470. in human history.

  471. Today,

  472. a few years ago,

  473. they did a study

  474. of the best-selling topic

  475. of books

  476. in all of the bookstores.

  477. And the number one

  478. selling topic

  479. was self-help.

  480. Yet,

  481. we live

  482. in a culture,

  483. we live

  484. in a culture

  485. where depression

  486. and anxiety

  487. are rampant.

  488. rampant.

  489. It crosses

  490. from third world

  491. into first world.

  492. It knows

  493. no difference

  494. between languages.

  495. It impacts men.

  496. It impacts women.

  497. Folks,

  498. it impacts adults.

  499. It impacts kids.

  500. We live

  501. in a world

  502. that is harassed

  503. and helpless.

  504. People are struggling.

  505. Health struggles,

  506. relationship struggles,

  507. financial struggles

  508. run rampant.

  509. Just seeing that

  510. Jesus has been traveling

  511. as he travels

  512. from city to city,

  513. from town to town,

  514. from village to village,

  515. he's healing people.

  516. The physical healing.

  517. But as much

  518. as he could heal

  519. in the physical

  520. of what's there,

  521. what runs

  522. rampant

  523. is the suffering.

  524. And I'm sure

  525. some of the suffering

  526. was self-inflicted,

  527. self-induced.

  528. Some was due

  529. to their circumstances.

  530. But may we look

  531. and see

  532. what Jesus'

  533. response is.

  534. Folks,

  535. it is

  536. compassion.

  537. walking around

  538. New York City

  539. and seeing

  540. the people

  541. lay down

  542. on the roads.

  543. Brent,

  544. yeah,

  545. Brent's here.

  546. How many years ago

  547. did you see that guy?

  548. Five years ago.

  549. Every time you go,

  550. right?

  551. He's right there.

  552. Same place,

  553. got his dog with him.

  554. He's on that spot

  555. in Times Square.

  556. I don't know

  557. what chemical

  558. it is.

  559. We could judge

  560. or we could

  561. be filled

  562. with compassion.

  563. I think it's

  564. remarkable

  565. that what we see

  566. of Jesus

  567. is compassion.

  568. See people

  569. the way that God

  570. sees them.

  571. See them

  572. with compassion.

  573. Remember this,

  574. folks.

  575. Proclaiming

  576. the truth

  577. of the gospel

  578. is never

  579. separated

  580. from the

  581. compassion

  582. of the gospel.

  583. Never.

  584. It is never

  585. separated

  586. from it.

  587. So we see

  588. the size,

  589. we see the suffering,

  590. but we need

  591. to see the separation.

  592. Jesus says they're

  593. like sheep

  594. without a shepherd.

  595. In my doctoral

  596. class that I'm

  597. taking this summer,

  598. I had to read

  599. a demographic

  600. report

  601. about Lexington

  602. County.

  603. Now,

  604. I'm a nerd,

  605. all right?

  606. And so,

  607. I'm not an intelligent

  608. nerd,

  609. I'm just a nerd.

  610. And so,

  611. I find these things

  612. fascinating to read,

  613. all right?

  614. This demographic

  615. report talked

  616. about socioeconomics,

  617. it talked

  618. about gender,

  619. family breakdown,

  620. all in Lexington,

  621. South Carolina.

  622. It talked

  623. about vocations,

  624. you name it,

  625. it had a study

  626. on it.

  627. In fact,

  628. 89%,

  629. here's some things

  630. that I think

  631. were just neat,

  632. I don't know,

  633. this is just me,

  634. entertain me,

  635. go with me.

  636. 89% of Lexington

  637. have internet connection,

  638. right?

  639. I think,

  640. I thought it'd be

  641. higher,

  642. I don't know.

  643. 38% own a dog,

  644. 25% own a cat.

  645. Dog people

  646. were winning,

  647. right?

  648. But here's what

  649. stout me the most.

  650. Here's something,

  651. it corrected me

  652. on a lot of things

  653. that I thought I knew,

  654. but here's what

  655. stout me the most.

  656. It didn't,

  657. for some reason,

  658. give a religious

  659. breakdown of the

  660. different faiths

  661. that people had,

  662. but here's what

  663. it did show,

  664. that 37%,

  665. 37%

  666. of people

  667. in Lexington

  668. see a need

  669. see a need

  670. for a form

  671. of organized

  672. religion

  673. in their life.

  674. That means

  675. where we live,

  676. 63%

  677. of the people

  678. see no,

  679. see no value

  680. of organized

  681. religion

  682. in their life.

  683. Now there are

  684. things that we can

  685. pick and choose

  686. and parse

  687. through that,

  688. but here's what

  689. it says to me.

  690. A few years ago,

  691. when I came to

  692. Willow Ridge Church,

  693. 13 years ago,

  694. 13 years ago,

  695. 33%

  696. of Lexington

  697. County

  698. would say

  699. that they were

  700. a follower

  701. of Jesus.

  702. now we take

  703. all the other

  704. religions

  705. and we pour

  706. into that number

  707. and we only

  708. increase

  709. four percentage

  710. points.

  711. Here's what that

  712. tells me.

  713. People are

  714. seeing

  715. less

  716. and less

  717. of the need

  718. of the desire

  719. for any

  720. form of faith

  721. in their life.

  722. Now let me tell you

  723. this.

  724. False faith

  725. is just as bad

  726. as no faith

  727. because false

  728. faith is no

  729. faith.

  730. But what that

  731. tells me

  732. is the people

  733. of God

  734. have an urgent

  735. mission

  736. and surrounding

  737. us

  738. is a growing

  739. number

  740. of men,

  741. of women,

  742. and children

  743. who do not

  744. know

  745. Jesus.

  746. And here's

  747. the question

  748. that we

  749. must answer.

  750. Not in

  751. simple theological

  752. agreement

  753. but in your

  754. heart of hearts

  755. between you

  756. and the Lord

  757. does the fact

  758. that our

  759. community

  760. surrounding us

  761. is lost

  762. and dying

  763. and going

  764. to hell

  765. does it

  766. matter to you?

  767. does it

  768. matter to you?

  769. And if it

  770. does

  771. folks

  772. what are you

  773. doing about it?

  774. You see

  775. it's easy

  776. for me

  777. to say

  778. that this

  779. matters

  780. but it's

  781. hypocritical

  782. of me

  783. to say

  784. that it

  785. matters

  786. but not

  787. engage

  788. into it.

  789. Jesus

  790. says pray

  791. pray

  792. that they

  793. will go

  794. that they

  795. will go

  796. that we

  797. will go

  798. because they're

  799. sheep

  800. without a

  801. shepherd.

  802. Look at

  803. verse 37

  804. and 38

  805. then he

  806. said to his

  807. disciples

  808. the harvest

  809. is plentiful

  810. but the

  811. labors

  812. are few

  813. therefore

  814. pray earnestly

  815. to the Lord

  816. of the harvest

  817. to send out

  818. laborers

  819. into

  820. his

  821. harvest.

  822. Folks

  823. Jesus

  824. doesn't

  825. call us

  826. to just

  827. sit

  828. and gather

  829. in a room

  830. and intellectually

  831. agree about

  832. this.

  833. He calls

  834. us

  835. to pray

  836. and to go

  837. because the

  838. work of God

  839. is done by

  840. the Spirit

  841. of God

  842. through the

  843. people of

  844. God.

  845. Jesus

  846. is sending

  847. us.

  848. Would you

  849. for your

  850. life pray

  851. that God

  852. would send

  853. workers

  854. and pray

  855. that you

  856. will respond

  857. as a

  858. worker

  859. that is

  860. being sent?

  861. Matthew

  862. 28

  863. go therefore

  864. into all

  865. nations

  866. baptizing

  867. them

  868. in the name

  869. of the

  870. Father

  871. the Son

  872. and the

  873. Holy

  874. Spirit

  875. in teaching

  876. them

  877. all that

  878. I have

  879. commanded

  880. you.

  881. The

  882. great

  883. command

  884. the

  885. great

  886. commission

  887. to go.

  888. But you're

  889. like man

  890. but not

  891. me.

  892. Not

  893. me.

  894. I'm not

  895. extroverted.

  896. I'm not

  897. knowledgeable

  898. enough.

  899. I don't

  900. know enough

  901. people.

  902. I don't

  903. have a

  904. place.

  905. I don't

  906. have a

  907. purpose.

  908. There's

  909. varsity

  910. level people

  911. who go

  912. and do

  913. this and

  914. then there's

  915. me.

  916. I know

  917. that's what

  918. some of

  919. you are

  920. thinking

  921. because

  922. these

  923. are

  924. the

  925. conversations

  926. that I've

  927. had when

  928. people begin

  929. to struggle

  930. with applying

  931. this and

  932. living in a

  933. sent

  934. lifestyle of

  935. living for

  936. the purpose

  937. of God

  938. to go

  939. right where

  940. God has

  941. placed you.

  942. I agree

  943. with it.

  944. I agree

  945. with it.

  946. I agree

  947. with it.

  948. But within

  949. me I don't

  950. see the

  951. qualities.

  952. Within

  953. me I don't

  954. see the

  955. characteristics.

  956. Within

  957. me I don't

  958. see the

  959. abilities.

  960. So look at

  961. chapter 10

  962. with me real

  963. quick.

  964. Starting

  965. verse 1

  966. verse 1

  967. and he

  968. called to

  969. him his

  970. twelve

  971. disciples

  972. and gave

  973. them

  974. authority

  975. over

  976. unclean

  977. spirits

  978. to cast

  979. them out

  980. and heal

  981. every disease

  982. and every

  983. affliction.

  984. And the

  985. name of

  986. these twelve

  987. apostles

  988. are these.

  989. First,

  990. Simon who

  991. is called

  992. Peter

  993. and Andrew

  994. his brother

  995. James

  996. his son

  997. is Zebedee

  998. and John

  999. his brother

  1000. Philip

  1001. and

  1002. Bartholomew

  1003. Thomas

  1004. and Matthew

  1005. the tax

  1006. collector

  1007. James

  1008. the son

  1009. of Alphaeus

  1010. and Thaddeus

  1011. Simon

  1012. the zealot

  1013. and Judas

  1014. Iscariot

  1015. who betrayed

  1016. him.

  1017. Here's what I

  1018. want to say

  1019. if Jesus

  1020. has saved

  1021. you

  1022. then Jesus

  1023. has called

  1024. you.

  1025. If Jesus

  1026. has saved

  1027. you,

  1028. Jesus

  1029. has called

  1030. you.

  1031. This is

  1032. a here

  1033. in our

  1034. text

  1035. oh man

  1036. this is

  1037. a hodgepodge

  1038. of people.

  1039. These are

  1040. not

  1041. seminary

  1042. professors.

  1043. These are

  1044. not people

  1045. who have

  1046. sat for

  1047. years

  1048. and studied

  1049. and been

  1050. trained

  1051. and who

  1052. are capable

  1053. in and of

  1054. themselves.

  1055. And so

  1056. if you're

  1057. sitting there

  1058. and you're

  1059. thinking man

  1060. Jesus

  1061. couldn't

  1062. use me

  1063. let me

  1064. share with

  1065. you

  1066. you just

  1067. read the

  1068. names

  1069. of those

  1070. who Jesus

  1071. is using

  1072. in this

  1073. moment.

  1074. Let me

  1075. share a few

  1076. things

  1077. about who

  1078. they are.

  1079. In this

  1080. group we

  1081. got blue

  1082. collar workers

  1083. small business

  1084. owners

  1085. fishermen

  1086. farmers

  1087. in this list

  1088. you're like

  1089. but Bo

  1090. my past

  1091. man

  1092. I know

  1093. God has

  1094. saved me

  1095. from it

  1096. but Bo

  1097. like if

  1098. I go

  1099. and share

  1100. with people

  1101. do you

  1102. know the

  1103. things that

  1104. I've done

  1105. and the

  1106. things that

  1107. they're

  1108. that they're

  1109. aware of

  1110. what we

  1111. tell you

  1112. like in

  1113. this group

  1114. is corrupt

  1115. government

  1116. officials

  1117. who everyone

  1118. knew were

  1119. corrupt

  1120. but God

  1121. had saved

  1122. them from

  1123. it.

  1124. They're

  1125. one of the

  1126. power of the

  1127. spirit power

  1128. of the

  1129. message.

  1130. Within

  1131. here

  1132. there's

  1133. an

  1134. individual

  1135. who's

  1136. a part

  1137. of an

  1138. underground

  1139. military

  1140. group

  1141. that's

  1142. looking

  1143. to

  1144. overthrow

  1145. the

  1146. government

  1147. and is

  1148. willing

  1149. to do

  1150. so

  1151. by means

  1152. of

  1153. assassination

  1154. if

  1155. required.

  1156. Jesus

  1157. says I'm

  1158. going to

  1159. call you

  1160. and I'm

  1161. going to

  1162. call you

  1163. and I'm

  1164. going to

  1165. call you

  1166. and I'm

  1167. going to

  1168. call you

  1169. and you're

  1170. not going

  1171. to do

  1172. this

  1173. through

  1174. your own

  1175. capabilities

  1176. you're

  1177. going to

  1178. do

  1179. this

  1180. through

  1181. my

  1182. power

  1183. and my

  1184. means

  1185. and I'm

  1186. going to

  1187. tell you

  1188. you don't

  1189. have to

  1190. go

  1191. and argue

  1192. the points

  1193. of scripture

  1194. you can

  1195. sit down

  1196. and say

  1197. let me

  1198. tell you

  1199. about

  1200. Jesus

  1201. Christ

  1202. to

  1203. save

  1204. me

  1205. does

  1206. it

  1207. matter

  1208. to

  1209. you

  1210. the

  1211. imagery

  1212. that

  1213. Jesus

  1214. gives

  1215. there's

  1216. a

  1217. field

  1218. there's

  1219. the

  1220. world

  1221. there's

  1222. a

  1223. harvest

  1224. there's

  1225. opportunity

  1226. waiting

  1227. the

  1228. issue

  1229. is not

  1230. is there

  1231. a location

  1232. the

  1233. issue

  1234. is not

  1235. is there

  1236. fruit

  1237. the

  1238. issue

  1239. is

  1240. but where

  1241. are the

  1242. laborers

  1243. you see

  1244. it's your

  1245. work

  1246. where

  1247. are the

  1248. laborers

  1249. at your

  1250. in your

  1251. neighborhood

  1252. where

  1253. are the

  1254. laborers

  1255. in your

  1256. school

  1257. where

  1258. are the

  1259. laborers

  1260. in your

  1261. home

  1262. where

  1263. are

  1264. the

  1265. laborers

  1266. and

  1267. my

  1268. prayer

  1269. is

  1270. for you

  1271. and for

  1272. me

  1273. today

  1274. we will

  1275. say

  1276. Lord

  1277. here we

  1278. are

  1279. here we

  1280. are

  1281. I don't

  1282. go on

  1283. mission

  1284. God

  1285. I

  1286. live

  1287. on

  1288. mission

  1289. for you

  1290. because

  1291. the harvest

  1292. is where

  1293. you have

  1294. me

  1295. I

  1296. ask the

  1297. band

  1298. they'll

  1299. come up

  1300. on stage

  1301. prayer

  1302. encouragers

  1303. we'll

  1304. move to

  1305. either side

  1306. of our

  1307. auditorium

  1308. if you're

  1309. here and

  1310. you're a

  1311. follower of

  1312. Jesus the

  1313. call is

  1314. to go

  1315. the call

  1316. is to

  1317. share

  1318. that's

  1319. the call

  1320. for your

  1321. life

  1322. but if

  1323. you're

  1324. here

  1325. today

  1326. and you

  1327. aren't

  1328. a

  1329. follower

  1330. of

  1331. Jesus

  1332. let me

  1333. share

  1334. with you

  1335. the hope

  1336. that we

  1337. know

  1338. number

  1339. one

  1340. if you're

  1341. here

  1342. and you're

  1343. not a

  1344. follower

  1345. of

  1346. Jesus

  1347. here's

  1348. the truth

  1349. of what

  1350. the Bible

  1351. teaches

  1352. us

  1353. about

  1354. our

  1355. condition

  1356. of

  1357. where

  1358. we've

  1359. been

  1360. that

  1361. our

  1362. sin

  1363. has

  1364. separated

  1365. us

  1366. from

  1367. God

  1368. the Bible

  1369. tells

  1370. us

  1371. that

  1372. all

  1373. have

  1374. sinned

  1375. all

  1376. have

  1377. sinned

  1378. and

  1379. fallen

  1380. short

  1381. of

  1382. the

  1383. glory

  1384. of

  1385. God

  1386. and

  1387. that

  1388. the

  1389. wages

  1390. of

  1391. that

  1392. sin

  1393. is

  1394. death

  1395. me

  1396. you

  1397. we

  1398. are

  1399. sinners

  1400. who

  1401. desperately

  1402. need

  1403. to be

  1404. saved

  1405. because

  1406. the Bible

  1407. also

  1408. teaches

  1409. us

  1410. that

  1411. not

  1412. only

  1413. have

  1414. we

  1415. sinned

  1416. that

  1417. there

  1418. is

  1419. nothing

  1420. there's

  1421. not a

  1422. single

  1423. thing

  1424. that

  1425. you

  1426. and I

  1427. can

  1428. do

  1429. in

  1430. and

  1431. of

  1432. ourselves

  1433. to

  1434. remove

  1435. that

  1436. sin

  1437. to

  1438. make

  1439. that

  1440. payment

  1441. the Bible

  1442. teaches

  1443. us

  1444. that

  1445. we

  1446. can't

  1447. fix

  1448. ourselves

  1449. and

  1450. if

  1451. the

  1452. message

  1453. of

  1454. scripture

  1455. ended

  1456. there

  1457. what a

  1458. sad

  1459. place

  1460. it

  1461. would

  1462. be

  1463. there'd

  1464. be

  1465. no

  1466. point

  1467. of

  1468. worship

  1469. there'd

  1470. be

  1471. no

  1472. point

  1473. of

  1474. us

  1475. gathering

  1476. there'd

  1477. be

  1478. no

  1479. hope

  1480. in

  1481. this

  1482. world

  1483. but

  1484. there

  1485. is

  1486. hope

  1487. and

  1488. the

  1489. hope

  1490. is

  1491. that

  1492. at

  1493. the

  1494. cross

  1495. Jesus

  1496. did

  1497. for

  1498. us

  1499. what

  1500. we

  1501. could

  1502. not

  1503. do

  1504. for

  1505. ourselves

  1506. Jesus

  1507. shed

  1508. his

  1509. blood

  1510. to

  1511. pay

  1512. for

  1513. your

  1514. sins

  1515. and

  1516. mine

  1517. and

  1518. that

  1519. through

  1520. faith

  1521. in

  1522. Jesus

  1523. Christ

  1524. we

  1525. receive

  1526. forgiveness

  1527. we

  1528. receive

  1529. eternal

  1530. life

  1531. we

  1532. receive

  1533. earthly

  1534. purpose

  1535. and so

  1536. if you're

  1537. here today

  1538. you may

  1539. still have

  1540. questions

  1541. you may

  1542. still have

  1543. wonderings

  1544. but I

  1545. would

  1546. challenge

  1547. you with

  1548. this

  1549. today

  1550. would

  1551. you place

  1552. your

  1553. faith

  1554. in

  1555. Jesus

  1556. Christ

  1557. as your

  1558. savior

  1559. would

  1560. you pray

  1561. with

  1562. me

  1563. Lord

  1564. we

  1565. thank

  1566. you

  1567. God

  1568. for

  1569. conversations

  1570. in

  1571. Queens

  1572. and

  1573. conversations

  1574. in

  1575. Lexington

  1576. God

  1577. we

  1578. thank

  1579. you

  1580. for

  1581. the

  1582. opportunities

  1583. that

  1584. you

  1585. give

  1586. us

  1587. every

  1588. single

  1589. day

  1590. or

  1591. to

  1592. live

  1593. on

  1594. purpose

  1595. and on

  1596. mission

  1597. because of

  1598. the gospel

  1599. of Jesus

  1600. Christ

  1601. God I

  1602. pray that

  1603. today

  1604. that we

  1605. would

  1606. leave

  1607. as a

  1608. people

  1609. confident

  1610. in our

  1611. hope

  1612. for

  1613. eternity

  1614. and

  1615. passionate

  1616. about

  1617. making

  1618. sure

  1619. that

  1620. others

  1621. know

  1622. who

  1623. Jesus

  1624. is

  1625. it's

  1626. really

  1627. a

  1628. conversation

  1629. of life

  1630. or death

  1631. it's

  1632. bigger

  1633. it's

  1634. heaven

  1635. or hell

  1636. God I

  1637. pray that

  1638. that would

  1639. matter

  1640. to us

  1641. it would

  1642. matter

  1643. to us

  1644. enough

  1645. to step

  1646. out of

  1647. our

  1648. comfort

  1649. it would

  1650. matter

  1651. enough

  1652. to ask

  1653. if we

  1654. could pray

  1655. for someone

  1656. if we

  1657. could invite

  1658. someone

  1659. if we

  1660. could share

  1661. with someone

  1662. if we

  1663. could be

  1664. compassionate

  1665. for someone

  1666. Lord I

  1667. pray for

  1668. anyone

  1669. here

  1670. who may

  1671. not know

  1672. Jesus

  1673. Christ

  1674. as their

  1675. Lord and

  1676. Savior

  1677. God I

  1678. pray that

  1679. they would

  1680. not leave

  1681. here

  1682. without

  1683. their

  1684. eternity

  1685. set

  1686. and

  1687. confidence

  1688. in

  1689. Jesus

  1690. Christ

  1691. it's in

  1692. his name

  1693. we pray

  1694. amen

  1695. that's it

  1696. for this

  1697. week's

  1698. message

  1699. be sure

  1700. to check
