  1. We are continuing in our impact series where we are working our

  2. way through the book of Acts and we are pausing every time we see

  3. the Holy Spirit at work. And we're doing this because we

  4. want to be a church that is set ablaze by the Spirit of God.

  5. We want to be a church on fire for Him.

  6. That the Holy Spirit would work powerfully in US, that the Holy

  7. Spirit would work powerfully through us, that each one of us

  8. would have significant encounters with God by His

  9. Spirit, and then we would be sent out into the world to tell

  10. our world about who He is. Amen.

  11. That is why we are praying and fasting together as a church

  12. every Wednesday. That's why we have an amazing

  13. prayer room here in this building.

  14. That's why every Wednesday between 7:00 and 9:00 PM,

  15. there's a whole group of people that meet in that prayer room to

  16. pray. And we would love to invite you

  17. to come along. If, if that works for you, we'd

  18. love for you to come. That's why every Wednesday

  19. lunchtime we have space, which is a wonderful place, space of

  20. intercession and worship, where you, again, can come into this

  21. building, but also you can TuneIn online as well in your

  22. break at work. And we're doing all of this

  23. because we want to cultivate a deep and enduring connection

  24. with the Lord that is this active, ongoing pursuit of Him.

  25. And this practice of corporate prayer and worship and fasting

  26. every Wednesday as a weekly discipline is such a powerful

  27. way to communicate to the Holy Spirit our dependence on Him,

  28. right? It's a deliberate act for us to

  29. seek God's will and his power for our lives, for this church,

  30. for this city, for this region, and to the ends of the earth.

  31. And there are so many people that we are connected with every

  32. day who are searching. They're searching for truth.

  33. They're searching for authenticity.

  34. They're searching for a purpose that is greater than themselves.

  35. And we need the power of God to complete the mission of God

  36. because we have to make the most of the season that we are in,

  37. our nation actually is in. And we as a church family, we

  38. have to make the most of this opportunity.

  39. Just think for a moment, if you can think of three people that

  40. don't know Jesus, they might be friends, they might be work

  41. colleagues, they might be gym buddies.

  42. Now just think if you invited all those three people to come

  43. to church, do you know the stats say that one out of those three

  44. people would say yes, I want to come.

  45. And friends, that is the season that we are in right now.

  46. And God is challenging us as a church family to go public with

  47. our faith in a whole new way that we would receive afresh the

  48. call of Jesus, each and every one of us to be his witnesses.

  49. That we would respond to the call of God when he says come on

  50. now it's time to blow your cover.

  51. And for some of us, being baptised will be the perfect

  52. opportunity and we have a whole bunch of baptisms that we have

  53. opportunities for people to get baptised all across this year we

  54. have lined up. It's very deliberate, it's

  55. intentional, it's not by accident.

  56. We've done this, it's on purpose.

  57. And maybe for a whole bunch of you here, this is your moment.

  58. So the first lot of baptisms are happening on Easter Sunday.

  59. Yes, yes. And So what I want to do today

  60. is we open up God's word is I want to take some time for the

  61. benefit of those who are new to faith and for those who've been

  62. a Christian for a while but have not yet been baptized, to look

  63. at what is baptism. So a couple of weeks ago, Chuck

  64. spoke about Pentecost. You know, this wild moment where

  65. the Holy Spirit pours himself out upon the disciples and they

  66. begin speaking in languages that they had not learnt.

  67. And we saw this intense experience of God's presence and

  68. power, and that power wasn't meant to be kept in the upper

  69. room. It was so explosive that

  70. literally they spilled out into the streets of Jerusalem.

  71. And they obviously a massive crowd kind of came around and

  72. they were confused and they were wondering like, are they

  73. dreaming or are they drinking? You know?

  74. And that's when Peter, this guy who a few weeks before had been

  75. hiding in fear, he stands up and he's got this fresh new

  76. authority, and he takes them. He takes the crowd through the

  77. history and the prophets and the reality of who Jesus is.

  78. And then he reaches this crescendo and the atmosphere

  79. starts to shift from curiosity to conviction.

  80. And we're going to drop in right up towards the end of Peter's

  81. speech. The crowd is leaning in, their

  82. hearts are starting to burn, and they're about to ask, I would

  83. say, one of the most important questions we can ask about

  84. Jesus. What do we do now?

  85. So if you've got your Bibles, we're in Acts chapter 2 and

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  86. we're going to read verses 36 to 41.

  87. It's going to come up on the screen as well.

  88. Therefore, this is Peter. Let all Israel be assured of

  89. this. God has made this Jesus whom you

  90. crucified both Lord and Messiah. When the people heard this, they

  91. were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles.

  92. Brothers, what shall we do? Peter replied.

  93. Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus

  94. Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive

  95. the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your

  96. children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our

  97. God will call. With many other words He warned

  98. them and He pleaded with them. Save yourselves from this

  99. corrupt generation. Those who accepted His message

  100. were baptised and about 3000 were added to their number that

  101. day. Amen.

  102. So Peter says really clearly in verse 38, Repent and be

  103. baptised, everyone of you. Yet there can be confusion about

  104. what baptism is and what it isn't.

  105. You might remember back in the day, David Beckham when he had

  106. his first son, Brooklyn, it was a baby.

  107. He was a baby. And he was interviewed and they

  108. and he said, I'm definitely going to get him christened.

  109. We just don't know into what religion yet.

  110. Then there's the group of medieval warriors who went

  111. straight into the river to be baptized, but the priest was

  112. very confused because each one of them held up their right arm

  113. and refused to allow it go to go into the water.

  114. And when the priest was like, what's all that about?

  115. They said they were concerned that if their right arm touched

  116. the water, it would turn their right arm more Christian, more

  117. gentle, and they wouldn't be able to hold a sword and they

  118. wouldn't be able to slay their enemies.

  119. So let's take this step by step, friends.

  120. What was baptism in the Bible? So most ancient cultures had

  121. some concept of ritual cleansing, a bathing ritual for

  122. the bridegroom before his marriage, or like ceremonial

  123. washing of hands before meals. But the Christian sacrament of

  124. baptism almost certainly finds its origins in the ritual

  125. washings of Jewish Old Testament law.

  126. For example, in Exodus 29, where we see Aaron and his sons,

  127. they're brought to the entrance of a newly completed Tabernacle,

  128. and they're washed. Leviticus 14, where we see

  129. people who appear to be healed of skin diseases.

  130. They wash their clothes, they shave off all their hair, and

  131. they bathe in water to cleanse themselves.

  132. And it seems this concept of ceremonial bathing in water

  133. developed over the course of Old Testament history and beyond

  134. into the intertestamental period, which is basically the

  135. 400 year gap between when the Old Testament finished and the

  136. New Testament began. Is that right?

  137. Chuck's looking at me like, yeah, that's good.

  138. I won't look at my husband and archaeologists unearthed in one

  139. community purpose built ritual baths for fully immersing

  140. people. But the first record that we

  141. have in our Bibles of people being baptised and the way that

  142. we would understand it is John the Baptist.

  143. In Mark chapter 1, verse 4, it says so John the Baptist

    Mark 1:4

  144. appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of

  145. repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  146. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went

  147. out to him confessing their sins.

  148. They were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

  149. He was basically saying get yourselves right with God,

  150. repent of your sins, receive God's forgiveness, and get

  151. yourself clean by being baptized.

  152. And that is the major feature of the New Testament for baptism.

  153. It's an external symbol of an internal reality as God makes us

  154. clean. And it's important to know that

  155. baptism in the New Testament always involved a lot of water.

  156. So there's never a moment where people are just sprinkled, you

  157. know, with a little bit of water on their forehead.

  158. In John chapter 3 verse 23, John the Baptist chose a particular

    John 3:23

  159. stretch of the Jordan River because there was plenty of

  160. water. When Jesus is baptised, it says

  161. he came up out of the water. When Philip baptises the

  162. Ethiopian eunuch by the side of the road in Acts chapter 8, it

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  163. says they both went down into the water and came up out of the

  164. water. There are no instances in

  165. scripture of a small sprinkling of water.

  166. Now the Greek word for baptise is baptiso.

  167. So that means it's like a sinking of a ship or a dipping a

  168. cup into a bowl or soaking a cloth into a VAT of dye.

  169. It's the common word in Greek, where we would in English use

  170. the words like drench, dunk, dip, duck, douse, deluge or

  171. soak, sink, swamps, steep or saturate.

  172. So John the Baptist, he waded into the river Jordan, the

  173. people repented of their sins and he dunked them under the

  174. water. And again in John 3 we see Jesus

  175. and his disciples baptising people in the same river.

  176. Then in Matthew 28 we see Jesus commanding the disciples to

  177. carry on baptising people after he's gone.

  178. So what does baptism mean? Baptism speaks of a bath.

  179. So when Chuck was young he he really liked to play rugby.

  180. Now he hates all sports now, but back in the day rugby was his

  181. thing. He was a young teenager, I think

  182. mainly because he loved to roll around in all the mud.

  183. The problem came after the game for him because he was literally

  184. covered in mud from head to foot, yet he refused to shower

  185. in the communal changing rooms. So what he would do, So what he

  186. would do is he would wash his face and he would wash his hands

  187. and then he would put his clothes, his uniform back on.

  188. The problem was that as he was walking home from school, there

  189. was so much mud on his body that it hardened and it started

  190. cracking as he was walking home. Grim, absolutely grim.

  191. He does assure me though, that as soon as he got home he had a

  192. bath. And very, very boastfully, he

  193. said there was always at least two inches of scum, you know?

  194. Yeah, really lovely. Really lovely.

  195. The thing is, even as a young teenager, he knew that he could

  196. wash every part of himself clean.

  197. But he also knew that there was dirt and darkness on the inside

  198. that a good bath would never touch.

  199. The wonderful thing about following Jesus is that he is

  200. the only one who can clean us on the inside.

  201. We've all seen the adverts, haven't we?

  202. These bathroom cleaners that promise the world, you know, can

  203. remove even the most stubborn of stains.

  204. Well, that's what Jesus does in baptism.

  205. You know, people come to John the Baptist and to Jesus and to

  206. the disciples and to the early church to say yes, Lord, clean

  207. me. Clean me, as Ananias said to

  208. Saul of Tarsus. And now what you waiting for?

  209. Get up, be black ties and wash your sins away, calling on his

  210. name. So baptism it's it's a bath.

  211. It's also a burial, as well as as the sense of cleansing that

  212. had been obviously part of baptism.

  213. When we see in the time of John the Baptist, the early church,

  214. immediately they saw this action of baptism, you know, going down

  215. into the water and then coming back up again as being like

  216. going down into the grave and then coming back up again.

  217. And so in baptism, they're enacting the burial of their old

  218. lives, aligning themselves with the death of Jesus, and then

  219. coming out of the water raised from the dead like Jesus.

  220. In Colossians 2, verse 12, it says you were buried with Christ

    Colossians 2:12

  221. in baptism, in which you were also raised with him.

  222. Baptism is the way that we draw a line under the past and we

  223. begin a whole new life with God. Does anyone remember John

  224. Darwin? He he he kind of hit the

  225. headlines quite a few years ago now but they made his story into

  226. a whole TV series. So he was a science maths

  227. teacher come prison officer. He also had a whole load of bed

  228. sits that he rented out and he also had a ton of debt.

  229. And on the 21st of March 2002 he was seen paddling his canoe out

  230. to sea somewhere near Hartlepool.

  231. Later the same day he didn't show up for work and so he was

  232. reported missing and then the following day they found the

  233. wreckage of his canoe. The trouble was, everyone was a

  234. bit baffled because the sea was like a pond.

  235. It was so still they couldn't understand it.

  236. And of course, it all turned out to be an elaborate hoax to get

  237. insurance money. And he reappeared five years

  238. later at a police station claiming amnesia.

  239. Now in one sense this is a really bizarre and tragic story,

  240. but also how many of us can relate to his desire to want to

  241. draw a line and start all over again?

  242. Of course, the New Testament, it talks a lot about coming to

  243. faith in Jesus is really a death, how we lay down our lives

  244. in order to gain a new life in Christ.

  245. Galatians 2 verse 20 says I've been crucified with Christ and I

    Galatians 2:20

  246. no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

  247. Colossians 2 verse 20 says you died with Christ.

    Colossians 2:20

  248. So as we come to faith and repentance and new life in Jesus

  249. we die and in baptism we perform the burial.

  250. Now people often ask can I be a Christian without being

  251. baptized? And the answer is yes, but yes.

  252. But you haven't completed the process.

  253. The appropriate thing to do with a dead body is to bury it.

  254. If you haven't been baptized, your old self has been put to

  255. death, but it hasn't been buried.

  256. So baptism it speaks of a bath. It's a burial, and it's a badge

  257. of belonging. It's the mark of membership for

  258. the people of God. In the Old Testament, the mark

  259. of membership was circumcision. Or the guy's breathe a sigh of

  260. relief that we no longer have to do that.

  261. Instead, we baptize one another. That's what we do as a visible

  262. public sign that we belong. So baptism is a sign that we

  263. belong to the church. I've loved every stage of our

  264. kids growing up. You know, you've got the baby

  265. stage where they're so tiny. And I remember going to our

  266. friend's house and every Friday night we would have dinner with

  267. them and we would put our son in the middle of their double bed,

  268. knowing he wouldn't move. There's no way he could move.

  269. And then, you know, when they're just learning to walk and

  270. they're kind of holding onto things all round the house.

  271. And they will toddle if they hold onto your finger.

  272. It's lovely. And then you've got the stage

  273. where they can walk and they would love to be between Chuck

  274. and I and swing everywhere we would walk, which was not great

  275. on the back, have to say. And then comes a time when your

  276. child walks at least three metres behind you, dragging

  277. themselves and they're a head down doing everything they can

  278. to be like, I'm not with them, I've nothing to do with them

  279. because we are just so embarrassing in baptism.

  280. We're saying, I know the church isn't perfect, but these are my

  281. people, I belong here, this is my family.

  282. I'm publicly declaring that I belong, Galatians 326 to 27 says

  283. so in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,

  284. for all of you were baptized into Christ baptism.

  285. It's a badge of belonging to the church, and it's also a

  286. declaration that I belong to God.

  287. We're baptized into the name of the Father, the Son, and the

  288. Holy Spirit, God's name. It's a declaration that I am not

  289. my own. I was bought at a price, placing

  290. myself under the Lord's kingship and lordship.

  291. So why should I get baptised? Firstly, it's normal.

  292. It's normal for Christians throughout the New Testament,

  293. whenever people encounter the good news of Jesus, they hear

  294. about how Jesus has been raised from the dead, they repent of

  295. their sins and they put their trust in him.

  296. They were baptised. So in the passage that we just

  297. read, right at the start, 3000 people in one day came to faith,

  298. became part of the church and were baptised.

  299. Lydia is selling her purple cloth down by the river in

  300. Philippi. She comes to faith, she's

  301. baptised the Philip. Philippian jailor can't say that

  302. word. Who was holding Paul in prison?

  303. What's he do? He comes to faith.

  304. But not just him, his whole family come to faith and they're

  305. baptised. Crispus the synagogue leader

  306. baptised. Even Simon the sorcerer

  307. baptized. In fact, you'll be hard pressed

  308. to find anyone coming to faith in Jesus who isn't baptized

  309. except the thief on the cross next to Jesus.

  310. But I think he had a reason. You see, it's what happened.

  311. They believed, they repented, they were baptized, and the

  312. truth is that the writers of the letters in the New Testament

  313. just assumed that everyone they were writing to was baptized.

  314. They say things like Galatians 3.

  315. You were all baptized into Christ.

  316. Perhaps that's because, secondly, Jesus commanded it.

  317. Think about the great commandment, Matthew 28, verse

    Matthew 28:19

  318. 19. Go and make disciples of all

  319. nations, baptizing them all in the name of the Father and of

  320. the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We baptise one another because

  321. Jesus told us to. It's a step of obedience.

  322. It's why Peter was able to say to the whole crowd when they

  323. said to him, what shall we do? Repent and be baptised.

  324. Everyone of you. Ultimately, to be baptised is to

  325. be obedient, and not to be baptised is not obedient.

  326. I think we call that disobedience.

  327. Thirdly, it's a powerful witness.

  328. Let's face it, being baptized is a bit of an odd thing to do,

  329. right? I remember many years ago now, I

  330. was walking along and I saw my friend coming towards me.

  331. I had my bag, I had a folder with papers.

  332. And as they came towards me, I started to wave to them and I

  333. tripped over a big pavement slab.

  334. And I didn't just trip. I like spectacularly trip.

  335. My phone went out of my hand, my bag went up in the air and all

  336. my stuff went everywhere. And my folder with loose papers

  337. in went all up in the air as well.

  338. And I did what any one of us would have done.

  339. I tried to style it out. I tried to make it look like I'm

  340. I'm so delighted to see you. I'm waving with all my

  341. possessions. Why would I do that?

  342. Because retaining our dignity and self respect is very

  343. important to us. So why would anyone in their

  344. right minds get into a big bath with all their clothes on?

  345. Bearing in mind that white things go see through and floaty

  346. things float, why would anyone allow someone else to dunk them

  347. under the water? In my day at school, that was

  348. called bullying because Jesus is more important to us than our

  349. dignity, and that is a very powerful witness.

  350. What better opportunity do we ever have to invite all our

  351. friends and our family and our neighbors and our work

  352. colleagues and our gym buddies to come to church to demonstrate

  353. the central importance that Jesus plays in our lives?

  354. I know that because when each of our kids got baptised, they

  355. invited their friends and their work colleagues and for some of

  356. them it had a profound effect on them.

  357. You know, they came, they saw, they felt they experienced

  358. something of God. OK, let me just answer a a few

  359. quick FAQs. I was christened as an infant.

  360. Does that count? Tough question.

  361. I have some dear friends who have grown up in Christian

  362. homes. They were christened into the

  363. Anglican Church and they were confirmed as teenagers.

  364. And for them they sincerely believe that they have been

  365. obedient to Scripture and to the Lord.

  366. In contrast, I myself was christened as a baby before I

  367. became a Christian. And so I was.

  368. I was a child at the time. I was kind of 710, something

  369. like that, and I just felt I should get baptized.

  370. So I looked at the scriptures. I looked at the scriptures with

  371. my parents. I spoke to leaders in my church

  372. because I just knew I needed to do this.

  373. So the way that we answer this question in this church is by

  374. saying that we believe that the Bible teaches that baptism is

  375. for people who have made a decision to follow Jesus and by

  376. dunking their whole body in the water.

  377. But if in your own hearts and before God, whatever form of

  378. baptism you have experienced and you have peace with that, then

  379. of course, that is a matter of conscience between you and the

  380. Lord. I think I would love to

  381. encourage you, though, to search the Scriptures, to search the

  382. heart of God, to talk it through with the leaders here in this

  383. church or pastors here in this church, and just see where you

  384. end up #2 is it too late? Maybe some people here, you've

  385. been Christian for a really long time, maybe even decades, and

  386. you're wondering, is it too late?

  387. Friends, it's never too late. Ideally, you bury a body as soon

  388. as you're sure that body is dead.

  389. But there are times, on the battlefields of war in

  390. particular, when a body lies unburied for a period of time.

  391. But if you ever come across a body that has not yet been

  392. buried, then the appropriate and the right thing to do is to bury

  393. that body to complete the process of death.

  394. And it's the same with baptism, friends, it's never too late.

  395. So why would you not take this opportunity #3 do I have to

  396. share from the front? Yes.

  397. Shall we pray? Bye.

  398. I know for lots of people that can feel a bit scary, but we

  399. would do our very best, our very best to prepare you and to make

  400. it as easy and as simple as possible for you to help you

  401. write down your thoughts and prepare you for this moment.

  402. And the truth is, it's like giving the groom speech at our

  403. wedding. It's the easiest gig in town

  404. because everyone just wants you to succeed.

  405. Everyone will be behind you. But don't refuse the best

  406. opportunity you'll ever have to share your faith with your world

  407. because you'll worried about standing up here.

  408. So if you would like to be baptized and this is your church

  409. and you're certain that you have put your trust and your faith in

  410. Jesus and you haven't been baptized before, please let us

  411. know. And the way that you can do that

  412. is there is a QR code here right now.

  413. And I'd love it if either you take a picture or you would scan

  414. it because that leads you to a little form.

  415. And on that form, you're basically be saying I am

  416. interested, you're not committing, but you're saying

  417. I'm interested in being baptised.

  418. And then one of our amazing pastors will be in contact with

  419. you. OK Is everyone taking a picture

  420. of those that want to? OK, wonderful.

  421. Yeah. And if you want to go back and

  422. look at it, it will be on the live stream.

  423. That's right. Great.

  424. So what we're going to do now is firstly, we're going to say

  425. goodbye to our amazing sights.
