  1. Well, thank you to our worship team. If you're

  2. with us on most weeks, you'll notice that we

  3. kind of went a little acoustic this morning.

  4. And something we've started to do more frequently

  5. and based on your feedback, it's something I

  6. think we collectively love, be able to hear one

  7. another's voices. Maybe that's good. Maybe that's

  8. not. I don't know. But grateful to the team for

  9. leading us. That song just feels timely. You

  10. know, we're all aware of the affairs of the world

  11. today. turbulence of the world, and I just feel

  12. like if there's a message from God that just

  13. wants to sing over the world today, that Emmanuel,

  14. God is with us, but that we would turn to Him,

  15. right? And that we would render our hearts and

  16. return to the Lord, but He's with us, and He

  17. gives peace to us as we pursue Him, even in tough

  18. and turbulent times that we are living in, for

  19. sure. Before we jump to the series, I just want

  20. to take a moment to plug something that you've

  21. heard us talk about before, but it's worth just

  22. an extra few minutes in this portion of the service.

  23. It's our Foundations class. It is kicking off

  24. a week from, two weeks from, two weeks from,

  25. I believe. I don't know. March is flying. It's

  26. kicking off soon on Thursday nights. I think

  27. the date's there on the screen. And Preston is

  28. going to be teaching that class. For many, for,

  29. I don't know, for the last three or four years,

  30. we've done something called Alpha, and we're

  31. still going to do that. It's coming in the fall,

  32. but we decided that we also wanted to kind of

  33. give people an opportunity to go the next step.

  34. So this foundations class is for anybody. Alpha

  35. is not a prerequisite, although if you take an

  36. Alpha, I think this might be a great next step

  37. for you, but it's not a prerequisite. It's for

  38. anybody who just wants to kind of go a little

  39. deeper in their faith. Here's the way I would

  40. differentiate it between Alpha. Alpha is like,

  41. hey, is this? stuff true and can I believe it

  42. and why should I believe it? Like, is the Bible

  43. true? How do we know that Jesus is really not

  44. some crazy lunatic? Like some of those maybe

  45. why questions. Foundations is like, okay, I believe,

  46. but I'm not really sure how to kind of take that

  47. next step or what is that next step for me as

  48. I think about my personal faith. And so I think

  49. there's already about 15 of you that have registered

  50. for that. We'd love to see it be 20 or thereabouts,

  51. but probably not too many more than that because

  52. we want to maintain a nice class size. that there's

  53. good dialogue. It's free. There's going to be

  54. free child care. It is going to be a tremendous

  55. gift to our church, and I'm excited for that

  56. to kick off. But I really wanted to put that

  57. in front of you because there's a greater emphasis

  58. this year on our discipleship piece. You know,

  59. we kind of rolled out this new vision in January,

  60. and in that vein, in that same artery, is just

  61. to give you and equip you with more. And so this

  62. is one of those things that is part of that new

  63. vision. So foundations, it's online. You can

  64. RSVP there. scan the, you can go to the church

  65. center app. You can do all the things. It's probably

  66. anywhere you access it, you can do it. And we're

  67. ready for you. And Preston's working really hard.

  68. I've seen most of the content for that. It's

  69. just really, really good. And so I want to commend

  70. you to do that. I'm grateful to be back with

  71. you. How many of you were here last week? What

  72. a blessing Joe was. Amen. Thank you, Joe. I'm

  73. not sure if he made it this morning. He's like,

  74. I'm not preaching. I'm not going. But he was

  75. great. I was able to catch it online later in

  76. the week and just continuing us forward in our

  77. Before I Go series that we've been in, in Jesus's

  78. farewell discourse. More on that in a moment.

  79. The reason we weren't here last week, though,

  80. Preston shared with you, is that myself and Tim,

  81. who's a member of our management team, we were

  82. in Stone Mountain. Georgia. Anybody ever been

  83. to the actual Stone Mountain Park? It's the only

  84. reason people go there. Stone Mountain, Georgia,

  85. to present a gift from LBC Gives to our, we have

  86. a new church partner in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

  87. You're seeing some pictures there, I believe.

  88. Yep, from last week. Kingdom City Church in Stone

  89. Mountain, Georgia. We took them on last fall

  90. as a new partner, as a domestic partner. We're

  91. really committed to having local, domestic, and

  92. then international partners. And so Pastor G

  93. and his church in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Man,

  94. God is on the move there. They have an afternoon

  95. service. It's at 4 .30. They're renting space

  96. from a church that's been in the community, an

  97. old Baptist church, for well over 100 years.

  98. And this community has just been fractured by

  99. racism. In fact, when you stand at the church,

  100. if you look down the hill and just to the right,

  101. there's a coffee shop there now. Out in front

  102. of that coffee shop is a big oak tree, and there's

  103. still chains hanging there from where they used

  104. to hang slaves. And so the community very intentionally

  105. decided to keep that there because they wanted

  106. it. to mark the history of that community, but

  107. the healing that's going on there as well is

  108. phenomenal. So we were able to be there with

  109. Pastor G. They had 18 people. It was beautiful.

  110. And we were like, hey, man, you're doing the

  111. hard work of starting. And us all the way in

  112. Arizona, in Vail, Arizona, are in this with you.

  113. And so we were able to support them not only

  114. on a monthly basis, but then through a one -time

  115. gift that you all made possible through LBC Gives.

  116. So hope to be able to provide you more updates

  117. with that. with Pastor G and what they're doing

  118. out there in Stone Mountain, Georgia. It was

  119. really, really special. I'm really grateful for

  120. the chance to support him. All right, we're in

  121. week five of our series, which is a series capturing

  122. what we know as Jesus' Farewell Discourse. That's

  123. the name kind of attached to it. But a simpler

  124. way to understand it is the final night of Jesus.

  125. with his disciples in this upper room, and they're

  126. sharing these very intimate moments. He's washed

  127. their feet. They've had this meal together. He's

  128. telling them of this new season that's in front

  129. of them. This is all captured for us in the book

  130. of John, chapters 13 to 17, and it's been kind

    John 13 chapter mention

  131. of the focus of this series for us. By the way,

  132. I'm a little jealous. Joe, if you were here last

  133. week, his passage was John 15, 1 through 15,

  134. which is the course of Scripture where we get

  135. our name from, which is Living Branch Church.

  136. I have an obvious bias towards that passage.

  137. And I was like, good luck, Joe. You've got to

  138. preach the name of the church. But man, did he

  139. do a good job. But we're going to pick up where

  140. you left off last week. Which was, if you were

  141. here, it's that portion of scripture where Jesus

  142. is describing himself as the vine. We are the

  143. branches. And you're like, oh, I see the name

  144. now. And he's inviting us to abide in him, to

  145. remain in him, to make our home in him. He is

  146. the true vine that gives us life. And as we abide

  147. in him, we are connected to that and find life

  148. as well. But if you were to go back and you were

  149. just to start over and just start reading this

  150. farewell discourse again from chapter 13 up to

  151. the point. point, up to the point we're at now,

  152. you would pick up a theme, I think, in Jesus's

  153. words to his disciples. It's been around this,

  154. his imminent departure. Like, I'm going to leave

  155. soon. It's coming soon. And there's a reassurance

  156. of the Holy Spirit. They would come someday.

  157. They would have this eternal future together.

  158. And so Jesus has been basically saying, up to

  159. this point, I will come again and take you where

  160. I am. And Jesus has been making them these promises.

  161. And right from the beginning, Jesus had declared

  162. that all of this was because of his deep love

  163. for these disciples, his guys. This was his crew.

  164. These were his guys. So at this point, I want

  165. you to see the shift that's about to happen here.

  166. At this point, if you're one of the disciples,

  167. you could be like, okay, this isn't ideal, but

  168. we think we understand here. We think we understand

  169. what's going on. We think we're good. Jesus is

  170. like, you're going to go away. the helper, the

  171. Holy Spirit is going to come. You still love

  172. us. You're going to come back for us someday.

  173. Seems okay. We can shake on it. We got a deal.

  174. Well, this section is what I'll call the fine

  175. print of the deal. I don't know if you've ever

  176. found yourself in a situation where you're like,

  177. this just seems to be a little bit too good to

  178. be true, right? And perhaps it's too good to

  179. be true. And then you're like, what's the fine

  180. print? I'll tell you of one story that came to

  181. my mind. Kendra and I were on our honeymoon in

  182. Intervale, New Hampshire. Anybody ever been there?

  183. We went to a ski town and skied half a day over

  184. a course of a week. But it was beautiful. We're

  185. in Intervale. We're out walking this little quaint

  186. ski town. And this person's like, hey, for 50

  187. bucks, we'll give you $50 cash. You just got

  188. to sit through this presentation. We're like,

  189. we're poor as poor can be. $50 will get us like

  190. a lot more back then. Three meals, like we're

  191. in. This sounds too good to be true. Yeah, yeah,

  192. just come in here, sit in here, 50 bucks. So

  193. anybody own a timeshare? My prayers are with

  194. you, and I can give you my best legal lawyer

  195. counsel to advise you how to get out of it. But

  196. anyhow, this was when timeshares were still a

  197. thing. Well, I don't need to tell you the story.

  198. It was this pitch for a timeshare. And we're

  199. sitting in there like, what? We don't even know

  200. what this means. Much less in Intervale, New

  201. Hampshire. Like, we're never coming back here

  202. again in our lives. Thankfully, we did not sign

  203. anything. And at the end of it, he gives us this

  204. $50 bill. And I'm like, giddy as can be, like,

  205. we did it. You know, we beat the system. We get

  206. to dinner. It's time to pay. I pull out this

  207. $50 bill, and it's been taped back together.

  208. And I'm like, oh, no. They did get us. Like,

  209. this isn't even a real $50 bill. So it was like,

  210. hey, we don't need change. It's all yours, you

  211. know. Like, take it, take it. Never heard the

  212. word about it. Point is, it seemed too good to

  213. be true. There was some fine print to it. It

  214. was like, hey, we're going to give you $50, and

  215. then you're going to sign your life away to this

  216. timeshare. Thankfully, somehow, by the grace

  217. of God, did not. But it seemed too good to be

  218. true. Like, you just need $50 to watch, like,

  219. a 20 -minute video? Like, okay. This is the point.

  220. Here comes the fine print from Jesus. I am leaving

  221. you, and I am leaving and sending you out in

  222. the middle of a hostile world. This seems to

  223. kind of be new info from Jesus. Like all the

  224. other things that he was clear on. Like I'm leaving

  225. you, but the good news is the Holy Spirit is

  226. going to come. And by the way, I'm going to prepare

  227. a place for you. So I'm going to come back. So

  228. this isn't going to be for forever. It's temporary.

  229. We're going to be reunited for eternity. These

  230. are all things that they are understanding. And

  231. quite honestly, they're like, okay, we can do

  232. this. We can get through it. But then here comes

  233. the fine print. By the way. While you're waiting

  234. for me, Jesus is telling me, you're going to

  235. go out into a hostile world, and there's going

  236. to be a response of opposition and rejection

  237. to you. This seems to kind of be new info, where

  238. they kind of sit up and like, wait, we were tracking

  239. with you up to this point, and now all of a sudden

  240. you're like, it's going to get bad. It's going

  241. to get hard for you. He has a new tone to him,

  242. in my opinion, as you read this discourse. How

  243. many of us remember as kids when our parents

  244. would tell us hard things and then they would

  245. follow it up with, I only tell you this because

  246. I love you. Anybody have those types of parents?

  247. And you would just think, you would roll your

  248. eyes and be like, no, this is the meanest thing

  249. anybody could ever say to me. And then now as

  250. a parent, you completely understand it, don't

  251. you? Like part of why you say hard things to

  252. your kids is because you love them so deeply.

  253. And it's our love for our kids. We tell them

  254. these hard truths. We warn them of hard realities.

  255. That's exactly what Jesus is about to do here.

  256. He's first going to give them the reality of

  257. opposition. He just wants them to see it. He's

  258. all but promised it. These are the next words

  259. from Jesus. Verse 18, if the world hates you,

  260. it's a strong word, understand that it hated

  261. me before it hated you. If you were of the world,

  262. the world would love you as its own. However,

  263. because you are not of the world, but I chose

  264. you out of it, the world hates you. Remember

  265. the word that I spoke to you. So Jesus' words

  266. are not exactly the words of a motivational speaker

  267. trying to win fans at this point, right? Instead,

  268. he's preparing his disciples for this really

  269. hard reality. that awaits them, that's ahead

  270. of them. He knew that the message he was entrusting

  271. to them would be carried forward into a world

  272. that would ultimately resist it, reject it, ridicule

  273. it, even persecute it. And the word world that

  274. Jesus uses there, by the way, hopefully a lot

  275. of you are still engaged in the carry on or the

  276. carry over, I should say. This week, especially

  277. on Monday, which is tomorrow, Preston does a

  278. really good job of kind of breaking this word

  279. down even further for us. You can go read that

  280. for yourself. But the word world that Jesus is

  281. using here several different times, he means

  282. as a way to describe those who blatantly reject

  283. God and who ultimately are trying to live independently

  284. of their creator. That's a generalized way of

  285. thinking of that word world. And here's what

  286. we should acknowledge. Jesus was and is the only

  287. perfectly loving, perfectly truthful, perfectly

  288. compassionate person who ever lived, and yet

  289. he was rejected by the world. And so what does

  290. that mean? What it means is if that the world

  291. rejected him, who's perfectly loving, perfectly

  292. gracious, perfectly truthful, perfectly all things,

  293. if that was their response to them, we don't

  294. have a chance is what that means. I don't know

  295. if you've ever watched a sporting event where

  296. the favorite, if you will, loses. Like, oh, well,

  297. they lost. We don't have a chance. They're the

  298. favorite. They're not supposed to lose. Jesus

  299. was not supposed to be rejected, if you will.

  300. I mean, he was, according to the sovereign plan

  301. of God, predetermined before the world began.

  302. But from our vantage point, he's not supposed

  303. to lose. He's perfectly loving. He laid down

  304. his life. Like, what's your beef with Jesus?

  305. He's given his life for you. And so Jesus is

  306. like, hey, servant is not greater than his master.

  307. If this is their response to me, then this is

  308. going to be their response to you. That's what

  309. verse 19 means. I've called you to follow me.

  310. Therefore, you're different. Therefore, it will

  311. be a source of persecution for you. Maybe you've

  312. heard of this spiritual tension. Back when I

  313. was growing up in the church, in the 90s, there

  314. was a lot of really bad Christian youth group

  315. music. We survived that. And then there was a

  316. lot of just, I don't know, people made money

  317. off this stuff. But there were shirts, and some

  318. of you still have them. Good, wear them. It says,

  319. in, not of, this idea of being in the world,

  320. the spiritual tension that we live in the world,

  321. but not of the world. What does it mean? It means

  322. our values, our priorities, our loyalties are

  323. different, but yet I pay my mortgage like someone

  324. else does. I drive my car like someone else does.

  325. I go to the same schools and places that other

  326. people do. So you're in the world. We haven't

  327. created a Christian bubble that we all just hide

  328. in. We're in it, but we're not of it. And the

  329. best example I can give you is a boat. If you

  330. think about a boat, a boat belongs in the water.

  331. They don't make boats to just sit on a shelf

  332. to be looked at. Like, its intention is to be

  333. in the water. That's where it functions best.

  334. That's what it's designed to do. However, if

  335. water gets inside the boat, it sinks and it's

  336. catastrophic. And so that's the best picture

  337. that we can kind of paint for you in this, in

  338. what Jesus is trying to describe here. It's like,

  339. you're in this thing. You're in the game, but

  340. you're different. And because you're different,

  341. There's going to be some persecution that comes

  342. your way. There's going to be some rejection.

  343. There's going to be some opposition that comes

  344. your way because you are different. That's what

  345. Jesus was trying to get them to understand in

  346. this moment. We live in the world, but the world

  347. cannot live inside of us. And the outcome of

  348. that is that as we follow Christ and the presence

  349. of Christ at work in our lives, what does it

  350. do? It begins to expose the things that are broken.

  351. None of us like the friend that's in better shape

  352. than we are, right? Why? Because it exposes that

  353. I'm not in good shape. I'm not friends with any

  354. 46 -year -old men because that's what I should

  355. be like, right? I'm kidding about that. Some

  356. of you are probably 46. Most of you are not.

  357. You're like 12. Welcome. Anyhow, you get it.

  358. Things that are right expose things that are

  359. broken. That's what it is. That's how it works.

  360. So as we live in Christ and the Spirit of God

  361. lives in us through the Holy Spirit, it begins

  362. to expose, if we're living in that light, so

  363. to speak, it begins to expose the darkness in

  364. the world around us. Have you ever noticed turning

  365. on a light instantly changes the dynamic of a

  366. room, right? In the dark, you don't see the dust

  367. on the baseboards. You don't see whatever, the

  368. imperfections of the room. As soon as you turn

  369. the light on, the clutter becomes obvious. The

  370. things that are hidden suddenly become visible

  371. in the presence of Christ. That's what Jesus

  372. is driving at, does that to the human heart.

  373. And Jesus was saying, there are going to be people

  374. that are just not going to like that. They're

  375. not going to like that. Not everyone is going

  376. to welcome that. So when the gospel calls people

  377. to something greater than their temporary pleasure,

  378. some respond with joy. I mean, Baptism Sunday

  379. is a response to that. You've seen it for yourself.

  380. So some respond with joy, and some respond in

  381. surrender posture like, hey, yeah, you're right.

  382. Things in my life need to change. There's some

  383. brokenness. There's some impurities. Things that

  384. I need to let go of and surrender and turn towards

  385. Christ. And the response of joy is evident because

  386. they're up here in front of all of you saying,

  387. I'm ready. I'm ready to be made new in Christ.

  388. And then others respond with resistance. And

  389. Jesus wanted his disciples to know that this

  390. is to be expected. So this is the reality of

  391. opposition. all that we could say about Jesus,

  392. one of the things that certainly should be said

  393. is that he was just a realist. Like he wasn't

  394. trying to pull punches with him. He's just trying

  395. to say, this is what it is. There's a reality

  396. to this opposition that you're going to experience,

  397. but rejection does not mean failure. It does

  398. not mean failure. Quite often it's evidence that

  399. you truly belong to Christ. There's an inescapable

  400. reality to it. And here's something that I want

  401. to see from this first part is that as Jesus

  402. went first in love, Jesus also went first in

  403. rejection. If the response to Jesus extending

  404. the most perfect form of love that has ever been

  405. displayed was rejection and hatred, why should

  406. I expect anything different? And I mean, just

  407. this morning, I was, as we were singing, I was

  408. thinking all the things that are in my heart.

  409. I was thinking of a friend who no longer talks

  410. to me because of my faith in Jesus. Someone that

  411. I was close with for many years. And American

  412. politics, thank you very much, divided that.

  413. But I think, you know, yeah, soapbox, but I'll

  414. say it. It's not ultimately about politics. It's

  415. about transformation in Christ. And faith in

  416. Jesus sometimes becomes a source of division,

  417. as much as I wish it wasn't. Because that's a

  418. friend I miss. It's a friend that I would love

  419. to be reconnected to. But I don't know that that's

  420. possible. So when I get in that headspace of

  421. like, woe is me, I'm like, wait, Jesus went first

  422. in love. He also went first in rejection. He

  423. modeled this for us. He showed us how to do this.

  424. Do we like it? No. But it is a reality. He wanted

  425. him to grasp this reality before he was gone.

  426. 1 John 3 .13, don't be surprised, brothers and

  427. sisters, if the world hates you. Strong words.

  428. So that's the reality of the opposition. Then

  429. Jesus gives them the reason for the opposition.

  430. By the way, they don't all start with ours. If

  431. you're getting excited that they do, they don't.

  432. The reason for opposition, reality, reason. We

  433. sort of already considered this, but let's look

  434. at a few more verses in John 15, verse 21. But

    John 15:21

  435. they will do all these things to you on account

  436. of my name, because they don't know the one who

  437. sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them,

  438. they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have

  439. no excuse for their sin. The one who hates me

  440. also hates my father. If I had not done the works

  441. among them that no one else has done, they would

  442. not be guilty of sin. In other words, it exposed

  443. them. Now they have seen and hated both me and

  444. my father, but this happened so that the statement

  445. written in their law might be fulfilled. They

  446. hated me for no reason. So Jesus sort of doubles

  447. down here, right? He's taking this a little deeper.

  448. A lot deeper, you should say. He wants them to

  449. understand that the hostility that they're going

  450. to experience is not merely cultural or social,

  451. but rather spiritual. As I was just describing

  452. to you with my friendship with this friend that

  453. I had. He will tell you it's political. It's

  454. not. It's spiritual. And Jesus is trying to help

  455. them understand, like, it's not cultural. It's

  456. not social. It's spiritual. That's what he meant

  457. in verse 21. The fuel of their opposition. It's

  458. not ultimately you, Peter and John and Andrew,

  459. as he's looking around and talking to these disciples.

  460. You're not ultimately their problem. That's not

  461. ultimately what they're mad about or angry about

  462. or rejecting. It has nothing to do with you.

  463. The fuel of their opposition would be simply

  464. their ignorance of God. And I say that in a compassionate

  465. way, like they just don't know God. There's a

  466. relational disconnect behind the opposition and

  467. behind the hatred that just don't know the Father.

  468. And no doubt, you've experienced this before.

  469. If somebody misunderstands me deeply, they're

  470. more likely to criticize me. They're more likely

  471. to make unfair statements about me. They're more

  472. likely to show opposition towards me. If they

  473. misunderstand me, they assume motives that you

  474. never had. I mean, you understand it. They might

  475. even just flat out reject you entirely because

  476. they've heard about you. so to speak. Why? Because

  477. they don't truly know you. Jesus says the same

  478. dynamic happens with God. Humanity, who was created

  479. to know him, but sin has distorted that relationship,

  480. and so there's two roads ahead. One is to fix

  481. that, if you will. Thank you, Jesus. The other

  482. is just to continue forward in this state of

  483. brokenness and ignorance, if you will, towards

  484. God. And so Jesus is saying that this is, In

  485. a perfect world, God has created you to know

  486. the Father. That's what you're created to do

  487. and to know and to experience. But sin has distorted

  488. that. And so we don't fully know God as he's

  489. designed us to. And yet, here's the paradox that

  490. Jesus gives us. The very presence of Christ removes

  491. that excuse of ignorance, if you will. That's

  492. what verse 22 is. If I had not come and spoken

  493. to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But

  494. now, now they have no excuse for their sin. What's

  495. the old saying? Ignorance is what? Bliss. Why

  496. don't people, for example, go to the doctor?

  497. Because they don't want to hear what they don't

  498. want to hear. Right? Ignorance is bliss. And

  499. by the way, I'm guilty of that. I can't tell

  500. you the last time I went to the doctor. And it's

  501. because the dude moved and didn't tell me he

  502. was moving. But I'll get over it. I just haven't

  503. got around to finding a new one. Why don't we

  504. go? Because we don't want to hear. The hard truth.

  505. Like, eh, I'm good. Until the doctor's like,

  506. no, this is A, B, and C. You need to fix this.

  507. They don't want to hear the hard truth. So if

  508. they just don't know, then they don't have to

  509. act. They don't have to do differently. I don't

  510. have to act if I don't know. I don't have to

  511. do differently if I don't know. And Jesus was

  512. saying, me, him, the light has come into the

  513. world, and people must choose how to respond.

  514. The doctor has given you the news. You got to

  515. decide what you're going to do with it. Are you

  516. going to ignore it and this disease will kill

  517. you? Or will you follow my instructions and advice,

  518. if you will, and be made whole and healthy? Some

  519. people will, right? I mean, baptism Sunday, some

  520. people will open the door. And the light will

  521. come in and expose it. Others will just pull

  522. the curtains tighter. But either way, Jesus is

  523. forcing a decision. This is why Christianity

  524. has been both attractive and controversial, right?

  525. Because it draws some people in with life -changing

  526. power that transforms them. We hear their stories.

  527. We celebrate that. And others, it provokes resistance

  528. and persecution. The message of Jesus confronts

  529. our pride, our self -sufficiency. our illusions

  530. of control. It tells us that we cannot save ourselves,

  531. and for many people, that is just the hardest

  532. truth of all. I mean, I've been a pastor long

  533. enough to know, like, nobody has a problem with

  534. Easter. If Jesus wants to rise from the dead,

  535. good. No skin off my back. They don't care. That's

  536. not controversial. What's controversial about

  537. Easter? It's like, hey, by the way, because of

  538. his resurrection, he invites you into a new life,

  539. which means you have to make some changes to

  540. your life. You have to get rid of some demons,

  541. if you will, that are in the closet. You've got

  542. to get rid of some pet sins. You've got to pursue

  543. holiness. You've got to strive for obedience.

  544. That's the rub for people with Jesus. Easter

  545. is fun. It's fine. Christmas Eve is beautiful.

  546. We have all the adjectives to go with it. What's

  547. the rub with Jesus is that Jesus is like, by

  548. the way, because you celebrate Easter and because

  549. of Christmas Eve, the fact that I was born as

  550. a human and came and lived a human life and died

  551. a human death and rose again, you got to make

  552. a decision. You got to make a decision. And that

  553. bothers some people. And so when I... Where I

  554. was going with that is when I encounter people

  555. who are resistant to Jesus, I don't know that

  556. at their core they have a problem with Jesus.

  557. Like, first century Jewish man is fine, nice,

  558. did good things. They have a problem with what

  559. Jesus demands of their life and what he's asking

  560. them to do with their life, which is to what?

  561. Pick up your cross and come follow me. down the

  562. narrow path that few will find and that is difficult

  563. to walk versus the broad path that many will

  564. find that leads to destruction. But Jesus reminds

  565. his disciples that none of this takes God by

  566. surprise. The rejection of Christ was foretold

  567. in scripture and fulfilled in history. The cross

  568. was not an accident. It's not an accident. It

  569. wasn't just like the Romans were like, we don't

  570. know what else to do, kill the guy. It was...

  571. predetermined. It was part of God's perfect loving

  572. plan, if you can try and get your head around

  573. that, which is difficult to do. It wasn't an

  574. accident. It was the culmination of the world's

  575. rebellion and the beginning of God's redemption

  576. story. Like, imagine if Jesus is on the earth

  577. and he's doing all these things and he's healing

  578. people and he's making all these promises and

  579. then just gone. And there is no crucifixion and

  580. there is no resurrection. Like, what a cruel

  581. divine, sick joke that God would be playing on

  582. us. Like, we tease this with Jesus, but he didn't

  583. go to the cross. He didn't fulfill the mission.

  584. And so there is no redemption for us. It was

  585. like, well, that's what it would have looked

  586. like, but you don't get a chance at it. But that's

  587. not how it unfolded, right? This was a culmination

  588. of the world's rebellion and the beginning of

  589. God's redemption story before Jesus left and

  590. before the Holy Spirit came. And then you come

  591. to the end of chapter 15, the beginning of chapter

  592. 16, and Jesus picks back up the promise of the

  593. Holy Spirit. So he gives us next our responsibility

  594. despite opposition. It's found primarily in verses

  595. 26 and 27. It says this, when the counselor comes,

  596. that's the Holy Spirit, the one I will send to

  597. you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who

  598. proceeds from the Father, he will testify about

  599. me. Here it is. Here's our responsibility. You

  600. also will testify because you have been with

  601. me from the beginning. So Jesus is now describing

  602. the mission of the church and the mission of

  603. his followers. Notice the sequence. Opposition

  604. does not cancel the mission. It clarifies it.

  605. Opposition does not cancel the mission. It clarifies

  606. it. So as a follower of Jesus. I'm called to

  607. be a witness. I'm called to testify about what

  608. I've seen and experienced in Christ. And a witness

  609. does not create the truth. A witness simply testifies

  610. to what they know. Think of a courtroom and a

  611. legal proceeding when they call witness to the

  612. stand, right? The witness doesn't argue the entire

  613. case. That's the job of the attorneys. The witness

  614. is simply up there to say, this is what I saw

  615. and this is what I experienced. This is my word.

  616. This is the heart of Christian witness. It does

  617. not... merely presenting arguments or debating

  618. ideas. It is sharing the reality of what Christ

  619. has done. And the testimony carries a powerful,

  620. carries power that no argument can replace. I

  621. think of, I'm going to show you this. This is

  622. a scene in John chapter 9 where Jesus heals the

    John 9 chapter mention

  623. blind man. And what's so interesting is that

  624. they're questioning the blind man who, by the

  625. way, is no longer blind because Jesus has healed

  626. him, about who is Jesus. And they're trying to

  627. put him in the corner like, come on. Wrap this

  628. guy out for who he really is. So here it is in

  629. John 9. So a second time they summoned the man

  630. who had been blind and told him, second time,

  631. by the way, first time didn't go, they didn't

  632. get the answer they wanted. Second time they

  633. summoned the man who had been blind and told

  634. him, give glory to God. We know, meaning Jesus,

  635. that this man is a sinner. He answered, whether

  636. or not he's a sinner, I don't know. One thing

  637. I do know, my testimony, I was blind and now

  638. I can see. In other words, You can debate theology

  639. all day. You can debate theology all day, but

  640. my transformation, my testimony is undeniable.

  641. And never more so in his case, he was literally

  642. blind and now he could see. I would imagine there

  643. wouldn't be an empty seat in the room if I had

  644. a former blind person come in here and say, Jesus

  645. healed me and I fully see. It would be like,

  646. oh my, it's undeniable. And I've had so many

  647. people tell me that they love Baptism Sundays

  648. at LBC. And the way that we do it, primarily

  649. because they get to hear the testimony of every

  650. person that goes into the waters of baptism.

  651. And look, that's our way of doing it. I'm not

  652. saying it's right, although it is. But I'm saying

  653. it's powerful. It's a story. It's a testimony

  654. that you're like, ah. Theology seems a bit over

  655. my head, but man, that's a story of transformation

  656. that you cannot deny. That person used to do

  657. this and be this way and live this way, and now

  658. they're surrendered their life to Christ. And

  659. you're like, I don't know about what some of

  660. these scriptures mean. I don't know what sanctification

  661. means. I don't know what transformation means,

  662. but I know that I'm seeing somebody who is different

  663. and has been transformed by Jesus. And the disciples

  664. had walked with Jesus. They had listened to his

  665. words. They had watched his miracles. They had

  666. witnessed the resurrection. They were living

  667. testimonies. And that's why most of them lost

  668. their life for the gospel, because they couldn't

  669. silence their testimony. Like, your story is

  670. your story. You don't have to like my theology,

  671. but you can't deny my story of transformation.

  672. And that's exactly what happened with the disciples.

  673. When Jesus was gone, they're like, We're never

  674. going to be the same because of him. And, I mean,

  675. they all had their story, and most of them, if

  676. not all of them, were eventually martyred because

  677. of that. The same is true today, not in America

  678. primarily, but what is true in America is that

  679. we each have a story of grace, and each one of

  680. us is called to be a witness, to be a witness.

  681. And to the people that are so afraid on baptism,

  682. I mean, bless their heart. There's so many people

  683. over the years that are like, I'm just scared

  684. to talk in front of people and I tell them this.

  685. You need to tell your story because somebody

  686. needs to hear your story. Like, there's going

  687. to be a me too moment when you're up there shaking.

  688. Someone else needs to hear your story. It's a

  689. story of grace. It's a story of transformation.

  690. It's a story of redemption. Like, this is a moment

  691. of celebration. that you cannot deny. And that's

  692. the calling, even in spite of the opposition,

  693. that we have a responsibility to still carry

  694. out the mission. And that is done primarily through

  695. just living into your story and to be a witness

  696. for it and not back down from it. The world may

  697. debate theology, but it cannot ignore or erase

  698. a transformed life. Our responsibility remains

  699. in spite of opposition. What is it? First Peter

  700. chapter three, but in your hearts. regard Christ

  701. the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a

  702. defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for

  703. the hope that is in you. Yet do this with gentleness

  704. and reverence, keeping a clear conscience, so

  705. that when you are accused, those who disparage

  706. your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame.

  707. It's a simple way of saying like, be ready when

  708. people ask you like, what's the deal with your

  709. life? You tell them your story of redemption

  710. and grace. Notice that it's from a place of,

  711. testimony, not condemnation. So when people ask

  712. me about Jesus, I tell them about Jesus, how

  713. Jesus has worked in my life. I don't say, hey,

  714. by the way, dude, what is the deal with whatever's

  715. going on in their life? And it's a place, it's

  716. leading from a platform of grace. confidence

  717. in the power of the gospel, like as I share and

  718. as I live into that and I'm consistent in that,

  719. that that does the transformational work to get

  720. people curious towards what this thing about

  721. Jesus is all about. Last part of the text, chapter

  722. 16, Jesus' promise to the Holy Spirit, a passage

  723. you might be familiar with from our Things Unseen

  724. series, but here we get from Jesus, this is the

  725. last one, the help for opposition. So Jesus knew

  726. that the mission would be impossible without

  727. divine help, so he makes them this promise. I

  728. have told you these things to keep you from stumbling.

  729. What does he mean? He means when it squeezes

  730. you and you want to give up, I'm telling you

  731. these things so that you won't. Because when

  732. it gets hard, you're going to be inclined to

  733. stumble and to quit. I have told you these things

  734. to keep you from stumbling. They will ban you

  735. from the synagogues. In fact, the time is coming

  736. when anyone who kills you will think he is offering

  737. service to God. They will do these things because

  738. they have not known the Father or me. But I have

  739. told you these things so that when their time

  740. comes, you will remember that I told them to

  741. you. I did not tell you these things from the

  742. beginning because I was with you. You didn't

  743. need to know them. But now I am going away to

  744. him who sent me. And none of you asked me, where

  745. are you going? Now that's kind of confusing because

  746. Peter was like, show us the way. Don't have time

  747. to explain that. It's in this week's carryover.

  748. Yet, because I have spoken these things to you,

  749. sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I'm

  750. telling you the truth. It is for your benefit

  751. that I go away. Because if I don't go away, the

  752. counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will

  753. send him to you. When he comes, he'll have some

  754. work to do. He will convict the world of sin,

  755. righteousness, judgment, about sin because they

  756. do not believe in me, about righteousness because

  757. I'm going to the Father, and you will no longer

  758. see me, and about judgment because the ruler

  759. of this world has been judged. I still have many

  760. things to tell you, but you can't bear them now.

  761. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide

  762. you into all truth. For he will not speak on

  763. his own, but he will speak whatever he hears.

  764. He will also declare to you what is to come.

  765. He will glorify me because he will take from

  766. mine what is mine and declare it to you. Everything

  767. the Father has is mine. This is why I told you

  768. that he takes from what is mine and will declare

  769. it to you. I pointed it out in our Things Unseen

  770. series, but it's worth stating again. Jesus says

  771. something so remarkable in verse 7. It is for

  772. your benefit that I go away. Imagine hearing

  773. that as you're one of the disciples in that room

  774. that night, especially after this new little

  775. bit of news from Jesus, the fine print, if you

  776. will, like, oh, by the way, they're going to

  777. ban you from the synagogue, and they're going

  778. to try and kill you, and they're going to hate

  779. you. And, oh, it's to your advantage that I'm

  780. not here with you. Like, what? You're our muscles,

  781. man. You're our protector. And Jesus is like,

  782. it's better that I go away. How could it possibly

  783. be better? I mean, we wrestled with this in that

  784. series, right? How could it possibly be better?

  785. Because through the Holy Spirit, Christ's presence

  786. would dwell within every one of them. So what

  787. does that mean? Instead of Christ beside them,

  788. they would have Christ within them. And that

  789. would change everything. That would change everything.

  790. And this promised spirit that would be within

  791. them would perform several vital works according

  792. to Jesus. What would it do? Convict the world

  793. concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment.

  794. And it should be stated. That conviction is not

  795. condemnation. Conviction is illumination. It

  796. just turns the light on. It is the moment when

  797. truth becomes undeniable. It's like the light

  798. being turned on in the room that we talked about

  799. earlier. And the Spirit awakens people to the

  800. seriousness of sin. When do your kids learn hard

  801. things? When they learn it for themselves. You

  802. can stand there and tell them all day, don't

  803. touch the burner when it's hot. when are they

  804. most inclined to not touch the burner? After

  805. they what? Touch the burner. And I believe for

  806. all of my friends that are far from Jesus, don't

  807. believe in Jesus, don't like the church, don't

  808. like Christianity, not many of those friends.

  809. Where it will click for them when it's illuminated

  810. for them in their lives rather than me with my

  811. Bible over their head all the time. As you know,

  812. you're a sinner. There has to be conviction.

  813. It's not condemnation. Conviction is illumination.

  814. It's like the light being turned on. And the

  815. Spirit awakens people to the seriousness of sin,

  816. to the beauty of righteousness, and to the certainty

  817. of judgment. And no human persuasion can produce

  818. this kind of transformation. Only the Spirit

  819. of God can open spiritual eyes. And Jesus also

  820. says the Spirit will guide believers into truth.

  821. He's doing that for us. Christian growth is not

  822. merely intellectual learning. It's spiritual

  823. illumination that comes through the Spirit of

  824. God. Have you ever read a passage in the Bible

  825. that you've read so many times before, but then

  826. suddenly it just kind of comes alive? Maybe it's

  827. a season that you're in. Maybe it's something

  828. that somebody shared with you. Whatever. Maybe.

  829. Words that seem distant suddenly feel personal.

  830. And this is the quiet work of the Spirit of God

  831. to illuminate truth in your life and in my life.

  832. He helps us discern truth in a confusing world.

  833. Is the world confusing? Yes. Yes. The Holy Spirit

  834. is like a skilled guide that's walking us through

  835. unfamiliar territory. And without him, we are

  836. prone to wander. You know that. But with him,

  837. we move forward. And then finally, Jesus says

  838. the Spirit's ultimate purpose is to glorify him.

  839. And the Spirit does not draw attention to himself,

  840. but rather he points people towards Christ. This

  841. is some pneumatology, some theology of the Holy

  842. Spirit. Don't get lost in it. It's not the intent.

  843. I'm just trying to clarify for you what Jesus

  844. is saying. This Holy Spirit is not just Casper

  845. the friendly ghost who has a job to do. And these

  846. are its jobs, if you will. Spotlight illuminates

  847. an actor on a stage. The Spirit of God illuminates

  848. Christ at the center of history. And he helps

  849. us see Christ more clearly, love him more deeply,

  850. follow him more faithfully. I would say if those

  851. are struggles for you, that you're probably not

  852. listening to the Holy Spirit. Because the role

  853. of the Holy Spirit is to help those things happen

  854. in our lives. In our lives. So, to wrap up. If

  855. your faith in Jesus brings criticism or misunderstanding,

  856. I would say remember that Jesus predicted it.

  857. And the goal of Christianity is not just to have

  858. the loudest voice in the room and to be the most

  859. persuasive theologically. The goal of Christianity

  860. is faithfulness to Christ. Popularity is temporary.

  861. Faithfulness is eternal. But here's the danger

  862. of this text, and I promise I'll close with this.

  863. I know when Joe was here, you got out like 25

  864. minutes early, and he's your hero. He's not here

  865. today for a reason. I'm just kidding. I'm just

  866. kidding. I'm just kind of, but anyhow. Here's

  867. the danger of this text. I promise I just, I

  868. need you to hear this. And then we'll close.

  869. The danger of this text is that some of us will

  870. hear Jesus' words and think, it's me versus the

  871. world. Come and get me. Like, they're going to

  872. hate me. I'll show them. And we puff up our chest

  873. and we flex our muscles and we're ready for war.

  874. That's the danger of this text. Because you hear

  875. like, oh, the world will hate you. You're like,

  876. oh, no, they won't. I'm going to hate them. being

  877. not of the world does not mean withdrawing from

  878. people who might, in the words of Jesus, hate

  879. you. That is not what being not of the world

  880. does not mean that. Because if you look at the

  881. life of Jesus, he ate with sinners, he spoke

  882. with outsiders, he showed compassion to the broken.

  883. That was the source of rub against all the religious

  884. leaders of the day. Who are the people that hated

  885. Jesus most? The religious leaders. because he

  886. didn't march to their orders and he sat around

  887. tables with people that they were like, no, you

  888. don't. So the drive of this text is not to get

  889. you to go home and build your spiritual bubble

  890. and be like, I'm never talking to anybody who

  891. doesn't live exactly like me, go to my church,

  892. listen to my music, think my thoughts. Not the

  893. goal of this. We are called to stand out and

  894. be a light on a hill, to draw near relationally.

  895. Where were Jesus' strongest moments of impact

  896. when he was right next to people? Right next

  897. to people. Truth without love becomes harsh.

  898. Love without truth becomes hollow. Truth without

  899. love becomes harsh. Love without truth becomes

  900. hollow. And the gospel holds together these things

  901. in perfect union in a weird tension that I can't

  902. totally understand myself. But you cannot do

  903. this in your own human strength. Because one

  904. of two things will happen. You will become so

  905. self -righteous that you will lose your ability

  906. to have an impact for the gospel. Or you will

  907. stumble and fall away from the influence of the

  908. world. It's so hard to get it right. That's why

  909. you can't get it right in your own strength.

  910. The courage to stand firm, the wisdom to speak

  911. truth, the love to reach others all come from

  912. the Spirit. We need the Spirit's guidance every

  913. single day. And Jesus spoke these words to prepare

  914. his disciples for the road ahead. They would

  915. face rejection. They would face persecution.

  916. They would face hardship. But he also knew something

  917. greater, which is that the Spirit would come.

  918. And when it did, the gospel would spread and

  919. the kingdom of God would advance. From ordinary

  920. people empowered by an extraordinary God. And

  921. within a few short decades, the message that

  922. began in this upper room would spread to cities

  923. across the Roman Empire. And the world that would

  924. eventually crucify Jesus would hear his name

  925. proclaimed everywhere. Everywhere. And it happened.

  926. It happened. Because of ordinary believers, followers

  927. of Jesus, trusting the promise of Christ and

  928. the power of the Spirit. You are not alone. and

  929. you are not powerless, and you are not abandoned,

  930. and the Spirit of God is within you, and the

  931. light of Christ still shines in the darkness

  932. today. Do you believe it? Do you believe it?

  933. It's through you, and it's through me. Let's

  934. pray together. Father, thank you. Thank you for

  935. this promise. It's heavy. Jesus said so clearly,

  936. if they rejected you, if they hated you, know

  937. that that was true for me first. A servant is

  938. not greater than his master. And you are our

  939. master. We surrender to you. We live our lives

  940. in obedience to you, albeit imperfectly. All

  941. of us have at one point or another avoided going

  942. to the doctor, quote unquote. It's just easier

  943. to kind of live in a place of ignorance. than

  944. it is to be really confronted with the truth

  945. and to make a decision. And so give us grace

  946. in our own journey and give us confidence in

  947. our story. We have a story to share. It's one

  948. of grace. It's one of transformation. It's one

  949. of redemption. Let us step into those moments

  950. rather than to back down from those moments,

  951. believing that Just like the blind man in John

    John 9 chapter mention

  952. chapter 9, whether or not Jesus is this or that,

  953. I don't know. There are some things that maybe

  954. are confusing to me, but one thing I'm certain

  955. of is that I was blind and now I see. Indisputable

  956. transformation. Make us confident ambassadors

  957. of that today. We pray these things in Jesus'

  958. name. Amen.
