  2. Church.

  3. This is a place where we continually strive

  4. to worship Jesus as the King with our

  5. lives, wreck our personal kingdoms to build His

  6. kingdom, and live out God's Word in the

  7. way that we interact with others.

  8. For more information please visit 717.church. Hey,

  9. good morning church family.

  10. We are the Harmons.

  11. My name is Luke.

  12. This is my wife Allison.

  13. Eliana is our youngest.

  14. She is downstairs in children's ministry actually watching

  15. over our grandson, Grayson, as well.

  16. This is my son, Caden, and this is

  17. my daughter, Aaliyah, who's going to be reading

  18. 2 Peter chapter 3, 8 through 13.

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  19. But do not overlook this one fact, beloved,

  20. that with the Lord one day is as

  21. a thousand years, and a thousand years is

  22. one day.

  23. The Lord is not slow to fulfill His

  24. promise, as some count slowness, but is patient

  25. toward you, not wishing that any should perish,

  26. but that all should reach repentance.

  27. But the day of the Lord will come

  28. like a thief, and then the heavens will

  29. pass away with a roar, and the heavenly

  30. bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and

  31. the earth and the works that are done

  32. on it will be exposed.

  33. Since all these things are thus to be

  34. dissolved, what sort of people ought you to

  35. be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting

  36. for and hastening the coming of the day

  37. of God, because of which the heavens will

  38. be set on fire and dissolved, and the

  39. heavenly bodies will melt as they burn.

  40. But according to His promise, we are waiting

  41. for new heavens and a new earth in

  42. which righteousness dwells.

  43. All right.

  44. Thank you, guys.

  45. Okay, so this is going to be a

  46. real encouraging message today, burning up of heavens

  47. and all that kind of stuff, right?

  48. Okay, first off, my encouragement to all of

  49. us, right, is bring your Bible to church.

  50. We love you.

  51. We want you to bring your Bible.

  52. We want you to write some notes.

  53. We want you to mark in your Bible.

  54. If you're not sure about that, that's okay.

  55. We can talk through that, but I think

  56. it's important, okay?

  57. Okay, over the last couple months, as we're

  58. going to get into God's Word together, we

  59. have been walking through doctrine.

  60. Doctrine is simply beliefs that change the entirety

  61. of our lives, and with that, we've walked

  62. through a whole bunch of them.

  63. And so up here on the screen, you're

  64. going to see a whole list of things,

  65. and with that list, you're going to go,

  66. man, that's a lot.

  67. You could have spent, you know, all this

  68. kind of stuff, but we believe this is

  69. what is important for us because it shapes

  70. the entirety of our lives.

  71. Can we put that doctrine up once, or

  72. the whole list up there for me?

  73. That'd be great.

  74. With that, we've kind of worked through all

  75. kinds of different moments, including just the last

  76. time we were together, we were reminded that

  77. God is persevering in grace until our glorification,

  78. and where we're going to be finally and

  79. fully redeemed.

  80. That was the last time we were together.

  81. This week, we're going to remind ourselves that

  82. we're going to continue to step into that

  83. God displays his perfect justice and his immeasurable

  84. mercy for all of eternity.

  85. And so my question every time we're together

  86. is, do we believe that?

  87. Because if that's true, we're going to get

  88. into Peter, 2nd Peter chapter 3, and you

  89. can turn there in your Bibles, because Peter

  90. is going to remind us what our worship

  91. response should be.

  92. We should be reminded that God is patient

  93. with us.

  94. Anybody need patience?

  95. Nah.

  96. We're all grown and perfect, right?

  97. Patience that offers the opportunity to surrender to

  98. his love, his grace, and his mercy.

  99. That's his patience.

  100. His patience allows all people the opportunity to

  101. experience him.

  102. And that patience is backed by just judgment,

  103. because he will come and judge all things

  104. and set all things right against, right again.

  105. His patience and justice brings hope and purpose,

  106. not fear and trembling.

  107. Hear that.

  108. God's patience and justice bring hope and purpose,

  109. not fear and trembling.

  110. So our worship revolves around his patience for

  111. us as a grace that changes our daily

  112. actions.

  113. And so my hope today is that we

  114. just walk through this line by line, because

  115. this is a tough portion of Scripture.

  116. And so I'm asking you, it's going to

  117. take some work.

  118. We're going to have to walk through this

  119. together.

  120. We're going to have to move around maybe

  121. a little bit, maybe shift, because there's a

  122. lot of concepts in here, but it's important

  123. for us to get together and work through

  124. this together.

  125. Okay?

  126. Ready?

  127. Oh, wow.

  128. All right.

  129. Good.

  130. Okay.

  131. This is gonna be great.

  132. All right.

  133. We're starting in in verse 8, but we're

  134. going to look backwards.

  135. Verse 8.

  136. Do you believe that?

  137. Do you think God set eternity in your

  138. heart?

  139. You go, I don't really think about eternity

  140. very often.

  141. I have too many things to take care

  142. of right here.

  143. But not just people that claim Jesus, but

  144. all people.

  145. All people have a natural inkling for the

  146. eternal.

  147. And you go, Jer, I barely made it

  148. through this week.

  149. But I'm going to try to point to

  150. it a little bit so we start to

  151. understand what that craving in us is.

  152. And we see that, like, eternal pull every

  153. time we go through some kind of disappointment.

  154. Ever bought something or got something and you

  155. go, yeah, this is gonna fulfill.

  156. This is gonna fill the bucket.

  157. You've seen the person that goes through a

  158. midlife crisis and buys the ridiculous car and

  159. they're still not happy.

  160. That disappointment can only be filled by the

  161. eternal.

  162. That's where we're supposed to be.

  163. We're supposed to be with God.

  164. And so that smallest of disappointment that we

  165. go through often because we go, oh, that

  166. didn't actually fill.

  167. You know what?

  168. I'm gonna look to the next thing.

  169. That's scripture though.

  170. Scripture would say that longing is for the

  171. Creator and to be with Him.

  172. And so as believers, this is why scripture

  173. is constantly trying to lift our heads.

  174. Get our heads down, not down, but instead

  175. pointed up to our Savior to get our

  176. eyes on Him, not what's going on in

  177. front of us.

  178. And so our passage today, Peter is doing

  179. exactly what we're doing today.

  180. He's reminding the early church that their lives

  181. are to lived in the light of eternity.

  182. Especially for those early believers, Peter's writing to,

  183. they started to allow people into their midst

  184. that started to try to shift what truth

  185. was.

  186. And so let me show you.

  187. 2nd Peter chapter 3 verses 1 and 2.

  188. So we're gonna go back to the beginning

  189. of the chapter.

  190. This is now the second letter that I'm

  191. writing to you, beloved.

  192. In both of them, I'm stirring up your

  193. sincere mind by the way of reminder.

  194. Verse 2, that you should remember the predictions

  195. of the holy prophets and the commandment of

  196. the Lord and Savior through your apostles.

  197. Hear this, verse 2.

  198. We, if we claim Jesus, we must always

  199. go back to scripture.

  200. Not to Jer, we must go back to

  201. scripture.

  202. To be reminded of truth.

  203. To be reminded of what we're supposed to

  204. be looking for.

  205. To be reminded of the way we should

  206. be acted.

  207. To be reminded.

  208. Almost the whole New Testament is reminders to

  209. believers, hey, you got to turn here.

  210. Are we any different?

  211. No.

  212. We need this same reminder, right?

  213. And so verse 2, Peter reminds us that

  214. we should be looking to the holy prophets

  215. and the commandment of the Lord and Savior

  216. through the apostles.

  217. And so the next couple verses, verses 3

  218. to 6, this whole world, all things of

  219. this world seek to get our eyes off

  220. of the eternal.

  221. Everything in this world has some value that

  222. seeks to get our eyes on that instead

  223. of the eternal.

  224. We probably don't do it knowingly.

  225. You ever walk down a rabbit trail on

  226. YouTube and you go, how did I end

  227. up here?

  228. Not, no, just me.

  229. Okay.

  230. Maybe you stream shows and you go, how

  231. did I end up ten shows and I

  232. didn't move for an hour and a half?

  233. I don't know, right?

  234. But in verse 7, Peter reminds those first

  235. believers that the same word that was spoken

  236. by the prophets of the coming King is

  237. holding this earth for the day of the

  238. judgment.

  239. You say, Jer, that's a lot.

  240. But I think it's important because now when

  241. we start our reading at verse 8, God

  242. teaches us about what a day means, what

  243. this perspective means.

  244. Verse 8 again, Peter calls us, verse 8,

  245. but not overlook this one fact, beloved, that

  246. with the Lord one day is a thousand

  247. years and a thousand years is one day.

  248. Peter calls us the beloved.

  249. We who claim Jesus, we're the beloved.

  250. We're tied together by his love for us.

  251. And reminds us that God is outside of

  252. time.

  253. So it's a really big thought, but God

  254. is outside of time.

  255. Anybody else think like, man, God's just following

  256. along the timeline, but instead God is outside

  257. of it.

  258. He is the one that is bigger than

  259. it.

  260. He's the one that's created time.

  261. And so in order for us to understand,

  262. even how we go, oh, I got to

  263. seek God's will.

  264. God is outside of time.

  265. And so all things that are going on

  266. in our lives are linear.

  267. He is outside of that.

  268. That is how he can work all things

  269. together for good.

  270. Right?

  271. And so we must constantly be reminded of

  272. ourselves that God is bigger than time.

  273. We go, God, it's time to act.

  274. Let's go.

  275. Get on your horse.

  276. You got to do what you're supposed to

  277. do.

  278. Take care of business, right?

  279. He's bigger.

  280. And he's outside of time.

  281. And in addressing the scoffers of verse three,

  282. he is reminding them how much God is

  283. bigger.

  284. Anybody want God to prove himself at this

  285. very moment?

  286. And you go, come on, God, strike them

  287. dead.

  288. Maybe that's just me.

  289. But we reminded, like, God's at work accomplishing

  290. his purpose for his glory.

  291. Man, if I was God, most of y

  292. 'all be dead.

  293. I'm kidding.

  294. Gosh, I just want to see if you're

  295. awake.

  296. All right?

  297. So to the one who created time, his

  298. time and timing is far higher than we

  299. can begin to imagine.

  300. Amen?

  301. His time and timing is far higher than

  302. we can begin to imagine.

  303. For many of us, this can be a

  304. source of frustration that we can't dictate how

  305. and when he responds.

  306. Or this truth that God is bigger than

  307. time can be a source of peace and

  308. worship, because as we continually remind ourselves over

  309. and over, God is bigger.

  310. What you carried in this week, what you've

  311. been carrying for the last month, what you've

  312. been carrying for the last year, God is

  313. bigger.

  314. And so we could stand up and sing

  315. songs for hours on end just to remind

  316. ourselves God is bigger, and he is outside

  317. of time, and he is at work.

  318. Amen?

  319. But that truth should shape all of our

  320. lives, because we can either fight him on

  321. our timeline, or surrender and follow his timeline.

  322. Do you know what I mean by that?

  323. Do you know how many times I've gone

  324. in my prayers and going, God, you've got

  325. to move right now.

  326. God, you've got to do something right now.

  327. And yes, it might be true, but here's

  328. what I'm saying to you.

  329. God's timeline is not ours.

  330. Does that drive me to worship him, or

  331. does it drive me to fight him?

  332. And so I white-knuckle it.

  333. All right, God, I'm going faster.

  334. I'm going.

  335. It's often frustrating to me that I cannot

  336. dictate or move God in the normal ways

  337. that I can try to get things done

  338. here.

  339. Do you know what I mean by that?

  340. I'm often frustrated at God because God won't

  341. do what I can get everybody else to

  342. do.

  343. Yeah?

  344. The people in your life, you know how

  345. you try to dictate the circumstances?

  346. You force your will on them?

  347. I am frustrated often at God that I

  348. can't make him do what I want.

  349. God, don't you see what's going on?

  350. We can either fight him on our timeline

  351. or surrender and follow his.

  352. So why does God hold back his return?

  353. Let's turn to verse 9.

  354. If you underline your Bible, I think this

  355. is a really good one.

  356. All scriptures should be underlined, just so we're

  357. clear.

  358. Listen, this is important.

  359. I need all your eyeballs.

  360. All of them.

  361. He desires all to turn to him in

  362. repentance.

  363. That's what he wants.

  364. He wants all people with him.

  365. Don't fall for the lies of this world.

  366. God wants all people with him to turn

  367. through repentance.

  368. If you hear nothing else today, God gives

  369. grace daily in that he is withholding his

  370. just judgment that all have a chance to

  371. repent.

  372. God being slow and not taking us out,

  373. God being slow is actually a grace for

  374. all of us because we want others to

  375. come with us.

  376. Amen?

  377. And so if you hear nothing today, if

  378. we go, man, God's just judgment, and we

  379. go, how could he send people to hell?

  380. My question is, if that is a stress

  381. for you, who are you telling about his

  382. forgiveness?

  383. We're gonna get into that.

  384. What we often view as slow, you know,

  385. that like, God, why are you not getting

  386. us out of here?

  387. I've probably said it 42 times last week.

  388. God, take me now.

  389. God, don't you see what's going on in

  390. this world?

  391. Right?

  392. God, don't you, like, why are you not

  393. taking us out?

  394. It's a call for those who do not

  395. yet believe to turn to him and for

  396. each of us to speak his name in

  397. the places that we're at.

  398. God's patience is so that you can be

  399. a tool for his glory right where you're

  400. at.

  401. Amen?

  402. All of this life has purpose because what

  403. he woke us up to, life with him,

  404. what he woke us up to, what he

  405. woke us up to is our sin, life

  406. with him, and our need of a savior.

  407. Now we are instruments for his plan to

  408. reach the nations.

  409. You have purpose.

  410. You do not go to work on Monday.

  411. You're an instrument of God's glory on Monday.

  412. Even to those people you're already thinking about,

  413. oh, I'm gonna need a hammer.

  414. Thank you.

  415. One of you is honest.

  416. I often view God's plan based on my

  417. comfort, not in the direction of eternity.

  418. He may be using your circumstance right now

  419. for his glory in a hundred years.

  420. What you're working through, what you're carrying, the

  421. people you're invested in, all of it, he

  422. might be using it for his glory a

  423. hundred, a thousand, who knows years from now.

  424. Your days have purpose because God is patient

  425. and has not taken us out.

  426. Instead he is using you as an instrument

  427. to help us turn towards him.

  428. Amen?

  429. And so this, this is why one of

  430. our values at 717 is to wreck our

  431. kingdom to build his.

  432. The more that I build walls around my

  433. house, the more that I make my house

  434. as only for me, the more that I

  435. make my life about me, the less I

  436. can actually be used as an instrument of

  437. his glory.

  438. I want to use his patience for ministry.

  439. And so his patience does not end.

  440. This is important.

  441. God's patience never ends in that it runs

  442. out.

  443. Instead, instead he has set a moment that

  444. everything will change.

  445. So let's read a little bit further.

  446. But the day of the Lord, you're going

  447. to want to underline that, will come like

  448. a thief and then the heavens will pass

  449. away with a roar and the heavenly bodies

  450. will be burned up and dissolved and the

  451. earth and the works that are done on

  452. it will be exposed.

  453. So this is a hard shift, but a

  454. vital one.

  455. If we're going to grasp the doctrine of

  456. eternity, his patient filled grace requires justice.

  457. We already talked about this, right?

  458. Justification.

  459. He has made us right.

  460. He has justified us.

  461. He is the one, but it requires justice.

  462. And Peter reminds his readers that despite what

  463. the other people are saying, God is still

  464. right and he's still at work and he

  465. requires justice.

  466. In doing some research, the day of the

  467. Lord, gospel coalition defined it like this in

  468. an article, God's prophets and apostles identify the

  469. day of the Lord as the climactic event

  470. when God establishes his sovereignty, eradicates all evil,

  471. and brings lasting peace on a universal scale.

  472. And according to scripture, this means the burning

  473. up of all things.

  474. All things will be exposed.

  475. That word exposed is all things will be

  476. found by God.

  477. Not that he doesn't know, but they'll all

  478. be brought out.

  479. And then we'll see in verse 11, he

  480. takes it even a step further with the

  481. use of the word dissolved again.

  482. So let me pause here.

  483. There's a host of questions that we think

  484. about or start to think about with judgment.

  485. We could spend days and days and days

  486. thinking about why would God do this?

  487. Well, what is that going to mean?

  488. When's it going to come?

  489. What's going to happen?

  490. All this kind of stuff.

  491. And those are all good questions and vital.

  492. You know, the first one came to mind

  493. like, okay, God's going to be just, you

  494. know, I know I'm saved.

  495. Do you think I'll look better in eternity?

  496. Like, does this get better?

  497. Do I get taller?

  498. Can I eat what I want in eternity?

  499. Often we go on with questions about eternity

  500. that don't actually help us in our daily.

  501. And so I don't want to skip over,

  502. but I want us to hear the clear

  503. point.

  504. There is a moment of justice coming.

  505. I don't know when.

  506. I can't predict that.

  507. But we don't want to get lost in

  508. questions that don't actually affect our Monday.

  509. If we follow scripture, there's a lot of

  510. fun things that we can talk about.

  511. Often churches get stuck in stuff that are

  512. not essential to the faith in discussions.

  513. We try to predict things that maybe aren't

  514. ours to predict, but the day of the

  515. Lord has to stay in front of us.

  516. Not for guilt.

  517. Hear me.

  518. God is not a God of guilt.

  519. He is a God of conviction and seeks

  520. for all to return to him because our

  521. guilt when we claim Jesus has been paid.

  522. Instead for believers, the day of the Lord

  523. can give us a holy fire in our

  524. bellies to speak the name of Jesus as

  525. often as we can.

  526. As Christians, sometimes we can be accused of

  527. using salvation as a get out of hell

  528. free card.

  529. The day of the Lord, when we ponder

  530. it, begs the question, who am I okay

  531. with going to hell?

  532. If you believe scripture, if you believe that

  533. the day of the Lord is coming, if

  534. you believe that, then who might you be

  535. okay with going to hell?

  536. Because we often act that way towards those

  537. around us.

  538. Some of us might think somebody across the

  539. political aisle.

  540. Some of us are so caught in situations

  541. that we go, man, let them burn.

  542. And so I ask you, who are you

  543. okay with?

  544. Not as guilt, but I want us to

  545. understand the day of the Lord means, man,

  546. something's coming.

  547. May not be in our lifetime, but are

  548. we using salvation as a get out of

  549. hell free card or are we letting that

  550. fuel our faith for every interaction for tomorrow?

  551. Every interaction with my kids, I need to

  552. understand that eternity is in front of me.

  553. Every interaction with the people that I love,

  554. eternity is in front of me.

  555. My family, my Baltimore family, do I care

  556. enough?

  557. I can't turn their hearts.

  558. It's not your job.

  559. It's not my job, but I can speak

  560. Jesus into the situations that God puts in

  561. front of me.

  562. The day of the Lord is vital for

  563. the justice of God to be fully realized.

  564. Many of us struggle with judgment for a

  565. variety of reasons.

  566. Verse 9, we see his patience.

  567. Verse 10, we see his justice.

  568. And in verse 11, Peter lays out for

  569. believers, for those that claim Jesus, how we

  570. should respond.

  571. And so will you read verse 11 with

  572. me?

  573. Since all these things are thus to be

  574. dissolved, what sort of people ought you to

  575. be in lives of holiness and godliness?

  576. That since, at the beginning of the verse,

  577. it means because of this, because of the

  578. day of the Lord, because all things will

  579. be exposed, since all of this is going

  580. to happen, what sort of people ought you

  581. to be?

  582. The day of the Lord calls us to

  583. live differently.

  584. I want to give you a couple words.

  585. First one, holiness.

  586. That means to be of God with distinction.

  587. Godliness, piety, reverence towards God.

  588. We are to be of God distinctively, set

  589. apart by reverence towards him.

  590. If the coming day of the Lord calls

  591. our actions to look more like God, I

  592. want to give you some factors that might

  593. be hindering us.

  594. This is just a couple thoughts that we

  595. go, okay, if the day of the Lord

  596. is kind of way out there, we're not

  597. really pressing into it, we're not really thinking

  598. about it, there's some things that maybe you

  599. and I might be working through.

  600. Number one, the stuff that stays here.

  601. The stuff that stays here, which is everything,

  602. often trips us up because we put weight

  603. and value in that.

  604. Not that they're bad, but they start to

  605. own us.

  606. I know a large majority of you.

  607. Most of you don't have idols of certain

  608. things, but we all have sneaky things that

  609. kind of rear their head every once in

  610. a while of what we're chasing.

  611. Amen?

  612. I do.

  613. The value we place on things that will

  614. not be the same often ties us to

  615. a short view of what God is and

  616. can do.

  617. Do you see how that like correlates?

  618. If we put a lot of time and

  619. effort into the things that stay here, or

  620. we start chasing things, going after things isn't

  621. necessarily bad.

  622. I believe step into your calling, step what

  623. God has for you, go after it.

  624. But we have to be on guard that

  625. things that stay here stop grabbing us and

  626. go, I better sit down for a while

  627. and fill in the blank.

  628. And so what happens is we go, I

  629. need to put some more focus on this

  630. value, and we start short viewing God and

  631. what he can do.

  632. The stuff that stays here, number one.

  633. Number two, lack of celebration of what Jesus

  634. has done.

  635. We at 717 want to continue to grow

  636. in celebration.

  637. When you take a step of faith, which

  638. all of you, I am so proud of

  639. you, we are taking steps of faith all

  640. over the place.

  641. We're stepping in, we're seeing people in the

  642. room, we're encouraging each other, we're opening up

  643. and connect groups.

  644. We are taking steps of faith.

  645. We're getting baptized in a couple weeks.

  646. We are taking steps of faith.

  647. You are stepping.

  648. Let's celebrate.

  649. Amen?

  650. We should be having confetti cannons every time

  651. we walk in the door.

  652. I'm not cleaning them up.

  653. But look, we have to get okay with

  654. celebrating.

  655. When you hear one of your brothers and

  656. sisters taking a step of faith, we got

  657. to not think, oh, why?

  658. Or, oh, what?

  659. We got to go, let's go.

  660. Right?

  661. Rodney, when he was up here taking a

  662. step of faith, him and Gene are stepping

  663. into this calling in this moment.

  664. Y'all were like, I'm messing with you.

  665. But you understand what I'm saying?

  666. Man, we can encourage each other by celebrating

  667. a whole lot more.

  668. I am so dang proud of you.

  669. Men and women, we are standing, we are

  670. working and growing, not because we're good at

  671. this, but because God is at work through

  672. us.

  673. Amen?

  674. Let's step into holiness and godliness.

  675. Instead of settling for the normal response of

  676. this world, we can celebrate because we have

  677. let eternity be our direction.

  678. Let's go.

  679. When you don't respond like the rest of

  680. the world is, let's go.

  681. Remind yourself that's God at work in you.

  682. If you're not sure what the response of

  683. the world is, just log on Facebook.

  684. Do the opposite of that.

  685. You'll be fine.

  686. We need Jesus.
