Bucks and Stuff- Week 1 -Pastor Kipp Penrod

good on a Sunday, looking pretty good.

It's good to be back.

Dixie and I were away last week for a little R&R vacation,

went down to Myrtle Beach, spent some time with family down

there and just had a great time.

And it's good to be back though and the weather's beautiful

here as well, so it's been good.

Listen, love to hear in the praise and the worship this

morning, I could hear your voices just being lifted up to

heaven and I'm telling you, God moves in the middle of that

just continue to praise them all week long.

I don't know how many of you go out of here singing some of

the songs that we sing, but I do it all week long.

I don't even know the titles, right?

Yeah, and sometimes I get the words wrong.

If you're listening to me, I probably don't have the words.

How many of you sing the wrong verses, you just make them up?

All right, sweet, so me too.

All right, I just make them up as I go.

Some of these days I'll just write all those down just to

see what they look like.

But it's good to have you in the house this morning.

I don't know if you know this or not, but we've got a whole

group of people that listen online and on podcasts.

As far as Canada, a lot of times there's a group of people

that listen up in Canada on a regular basis, so it's just good

to have everybody in the house and it's probably a little

chillier up in that neck of the woods for sure.

But can I say this?

Can I be transparent about something?

There are certain areas of life, right?

In my life and probably in your life that it seems hard or it's

almost a battle to find this consistent balance, right?

As a believer, as a human being, as a follower of Jesus Christ,

you know, and I want to follow Jesus with everything that's

in me, there's sometimes these areas of life that it seems so

hard to consistently achieve what we call a good rhythm or a

good balance in something, right?

And one of those things is time, say time.

Yeah, time is one of those areas, right?

It's one of those indispensable and most valuable things, gifts

that we are given, but it's hard to find balance sometimes with

all that, right?

We all get the same thing.

We all get the same amount of seconds.

We all get the same amount of minutes.

We all get the same amount of hours in a week, right?

Same increments of time get allocated to everybody in the

house and the person even next to you, but how do I use that

time wisely?

Where do I invest?

Where do I get balance in all this?

Because everything competes for my time.

It really does.

Everything competes for your time.

Outside factors and what I call outside factors and inside

factors compete for our time.

And some of the outside factors, you really don't have any

control over.

There's things like your education or your career.

How many of you got to go to work so you can get some food on

the table and eat and pay for your shelter and clothing and

we appreciate you having clothing, right?

All those kind of things.

You got to go and they're kind of out of your control.

And family life and as much as we want to invest as much as we

can in our family, there's finding that balance with

everything.

And that's those outside things.

Sometimes there's those inside things where we're trying to

achieve balance, right?

Things like our devices, right?

Our iPhones or our phones or our pads, iPads or our

computers, right?

I call that kind of the self-inflicted time snatchers,

right?

Listen, I don't know if you know this or not, but the average

American spends 5.4 hours on their phone.

13, you're supposed to go, ooh.

You guys weren't even surprised.

All right.

13% of millennials, right?

And 5% of baby boomers, that's a generation older than I am.

5% of the baby boomers say they spend at least 12 hours a day on

their devices.

It seems difficult to find balance in life, right?

In our Christian walk, you might want to have a talk if you're

doing 12 hours on that thing, right?

With someone.

You might want to go get some counseling about that, right?

But there's different areas in our life where we have a

difficulty finding balance.

And one of those areas is money and possessions.

How do I what do I do with money and possessions as a believer,

as a follower of Jesus Christ?

What do I do with my bucks and what do I do with my stuff.

All right.

What do I do with my box and what do I do with my stuff as a

Christian as a follower of Christ?

You know, how much money should I make?

How much money should I give away?

How much money should I give to God?

How much money should I save and keep, right?

How much money should I supply to my family?

How much money should I withhold from my family?

How much stuff should I have?

How much stuff shouldn't I have?

How much of it should I give away?

How much should I spend on pleasure?

Or should I spend any money on pleasure?

Do I save up for the next mission trip that's going to take place?

Or do I buy myself a Peloton?

We ask ourselves these questions.

We struggle with this thing.

We try to find balance.

What does this look like?

What's the right answer?

What's the right way to do this?

How do I get the balance?

Because everything I do, everything I engage in as a follower of Jesus Christ, I want it

to honor God.

I want Him to be honored in all of it, even in my books and my stuff.

And it turns out that the Lord does not leave us in the dark when it comes to books and

stuff.

Say, books and stuff.

Books and stuff.

He doesn't leave us waffled.

He doesn't put us in a place where we're trying to just figure this thing out and grab on

through.

And I don't know if you know this or not, some of you might have heard this before,

but there are more than 500 verses in Scripture on prayer.

There are nearly 500 concerning faith.

There are over 2,000 verses concerning your books and your stuff.

16 of Jesus' 38 parables had something to do with money or possessions or books and

stuff.

15% of Jesus' recorded words in Scripture had to do with books and stuff.

So our books and stuff matter to God, right?

And it should matter to us, and I want to glorify God in all that I do, and I want to

achieve that so-called balance that we're always looking for.

How does this work?

What does it look like?

And Jesus threaded conversations and He threaded instruction about books and stuff all through

encounters that He had in Scripture with individuals.

So one of those encounters I want to take you to this morning, if you got your Bibles,

I want you to turn to Luke.

Say Luke.

Luke chapter 19.

Luke 19 · chapter mention

We're going to start at verse 1, and as you're turning there, I'm going to pray.

Lord we thank You for this day.

God I thank You for Your mercy and love.

I thank You for the opportunity to get together, the beautiful weather that You've given us.

And Lord God as we come together, Lord through Your Word, Lord help us to understand, God

that You show us the balance.

You show us the direction in our books and in our stuff.

Luke chapter 19 verse 1 says this, Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

Luke 19:1

Now behold there was a man named Zacchaeus.

Say Zacchaeus.

I'd like to know who we're talking about.

Say Zacchaeus.

Go ahead.

You can call him Zac for short if you want.

Jesus entered and passed through Jericho and behold there was a man named Zacchaeus who

was a chief tax collector and he was rich.

And he sought to see who Jesus was but could not because of the crowd for he was of short

stature.

Now I need you to picture this when we're reading God's Word.

It's important to picture what's taking place.

So I want you to picture in your mind this ancient city of Jericho.

And I want you to see, I want you to get a picture of Zacchaeus in your mind.

I want you to picture this wealthy guy who is extremely wealthy but he is very much height

challenged.

He was short.

He was a little man.

Now I don't know what your Zacchaeus looks like.

I know what my Zacchaeus looks like.

And some of you are thinking well if they had iPhones back then you could just take

a selfie and show us.

But listen what does your Zacchaeus look like?

Mine has bling all over because he's very wealthy.

He's got bling.

He's got all the newest clothes.

He's got the right shoes.

And I'm picturing this guy who is Jewish and he's in this culture in Jericho and he's

wealthy tax collector.

And just to give you a little context with Zacchaeus you've got to understand something

about Jewish tax collectors back then.

They were hated.

They were hated individuals.

They collected Roman taxes.

They were Jewish but they collected Roman taxes from the Jews that were living in Roman

territory.

And the Jewish people hated them for good reason because almost all the tax collectors,

these Jewish tax collectors were on the take.

All of them were crooks.

They were collecting more money than they were supposed to from the Romans that the

Romans wanted them to collect and they would keep it for themselves.

They were scamming, extorting money on the regular and Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector.

He was wealthy because he was stealing money.

He was a chief crook and he was considered a traitor to his people.

So I want you to kind of picture all this.

This little short guy and Jesus is coming into town in Jericho and people are lining

the streets and I just see this little short guy hopping.

He's in the background.

His bling is jingling.

He's trying to get in and nobody is going to let him in because nobody likes him.

And he's trying to see Jesus but he can't see Jesus.

He wants to get a look because he's heard about this man who's coming to town.

Verse 4 says this, so he ran ahead.

He climbed into a sycamore tree to see him.

That's Jesus.

For he was going to pass that way and when Jesus came to the place he looked up and saw

him and said, Zacchaeus, make haste and come down for today I must stay at your house.

So he made haste and came down and received him joyfully but when they saw it they all

complained saying he's gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.

Of all the people that Jesus would pick to go spend time with in this city of Jericho

he picks this little annoying chief tax collector who everybody hates.

This guy named Zacchaeus.

And you've got to understand something here.

Jesus is pretty famous at this point.

People have heard how he heals.

They've heard of the miracles.

Everybody wants to have lunch with Jesus.

Everybody wants to sit down and interview him whether they like him or don't like him.

Whether it was people who were his enemies they wanted to sit and find out and question

him and ask where did this power come from and then the people that did know him or heard

of him and did like him they wanted to spend time with him.

All these people are vying for time.

So Jesus could have invited himself to anybody's house at that point and they would have gladly

taken him in.

People of influence, people of power, officials in the community.

But he picks this hated Jewish tax collector for Rome.

How many know Jesus doesn't view us through the lens of our failures?

He doesn't view us through the lens of our mess and our sin.

When he looks at Zacchaeus he's looking at Zacchaeus and he's thinking you know I think

I know who this man could be in me.

I know how I could change his life.

He sees Zacchaeus and if Zacchaeus repents, if he truly repents, if he truly gives his

life over to the Lord, Jesus sees who he can be.

That should give me hope today.

That should give you hope today.

That should give everyone hope today.

Amen?

It's true.

So Jesus heads to Zacchaeus' house.

All political correctness and crowd expectation aside, he heads to Zacchaeus' house.

Verse 8 says, then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Jesus shows up, has lunch or

supper, spends time with him and he stood and said to the Lord, Lord look I gave half

of my goods to the poor and if I've taken anything from anyone by false accusation I

restore fourfold.

And Jesus said to him, today salvation has come to this house because he also is the

son of Abraham, for the son of man has come to seek and save that which is lost.

Jesus hangs out with Zacchaeus for a day, actually less than a day, part of a day.

And everything in Zacchaeus' life changes.

Everything shifts.

This sawed off, no good for nothing, crook trader, tax collector spends part of a day

with Jesus Christ.

He repents of his corrupt ways.

He begins to make crazy declarations.

He doesn't just get saved and quietly thank God in his heart.

He begins to make crazy declarations.

He begins to say crazy stuff, radical stuff.

He says today I'm going to give half of my goods to the poor.

Half of my stuff, half of my bucks, half of my stuff.

I want you to think about that for a minute.

Just take a little bit of inventory of everything that you own, everything that you have, everything

you've got in accounts, take a little inventory of that and think, you know today after church

I'm going to go home and I'm going to split all that right in half.

I've got two cars, I'm going to set one aside, I'm going to sell the house, I'm going to

give half the money, I've got all this stuff in there, I've got this, I've got that, I'm

going to take it and I'm going to figure out what half that is and I'm just going to give

it to the poor.

How many know that's radical?

That's radical.

That's wild.

And then he doesn't stop there.

He continues on with the declarations and he says I'm going to restore up to four fold

what I took unjustly, 400% return on what he stole.

Can you see him?

I can see him just going down through town, right?

All his bling.

Well he's only got half of it now because he gave half of it away.

But you know he's got half of his bling hanging on him, clunk, clunk, clunk, knocks on the

door, somebody opens up and they're like oh it's you, you back here to steal more of my

money?

You know you want more of my money?

He goes oh no, no, no, no, no, no.

Listen I know I came and I took $100 the other day and I took it unjustly so here let me

write you a check, I'm going to write you a check for $400.

He takes it and he rips off his check book and he lays it in their hands and they're

just standing there stunned, right?

Jaw dropped, what just happened?

What's taking place here?

Am I on, you know, somebody got a camera?

Is this just some kind of trick?

Is this a reality show?

What's happening right now?

This guy, Zacchaeus makes, he goes crazy and he makes these declarations.

What makes Zacchaeus' conversion so radical?

His salvation so obvious that Jesus declares it.

It's this.

His money and possessions held a new position in Zacchaeus' life.

Money and possessions held.

His bucks and his stuff took a whole new position in his life.

Now I don't know if bucks and stuff were the first place in his life, probably by the sounds

of it, right?

Because he didn't care who hated him.

He just was after the bucks and his stuff before meeting Jesus.

But I'm thinking somewhere along the way that was kind of in first place.

And we don't, you know the Bible doesn't really tell us a lot about Zacchaeus.

We don't know about Zacchaeus' securities or insecurities.

We don't know if he was poor as a child and overcompensated by making all this money later

on and even stealing it.

We don't know his background or his family situation.

We don't know the psychology of anything about Zacchaeus and it didn't really even matter.

All I know is that he spent a half a day with Jesus.

Something like a half a day with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

Conviction sets into his heart and what he held in the highest position in his life,

his bucks and his stuff, he's given away like candy at a Christmas parade.

He's just thrown it out.

What changed?

Bucks and stuff held a new position in Zacchaeus' life.

We freely give away what is devalued in our lives.

If you don't believe this, maybe later this and maybe this coming next weekend, find out

where the nearest yard sale is.

Either they run like about 10 to 2 o'clock or 8 to 2 o'clock.

Here's what you do.

I know all the yard sale people, you show up at like 730 and see if you can pillage

anything you can before it actually starts.

Come on, can I get a witness?

I see people with you.

Amen.

But instead, if it shuts down at 2, go at 145.

Do you know what happens at 145?

They don't want to put that stuff back in their garage.

They don't want to go pack that stuff back away.

They want to get rid of everything.

Even the Bowflex that they paid $1,000 for 10 years ago, they're trying to stuff it in

the back of your car for $3.

Or they'll give it to you for free.

What happened?

They paid $1,000 for that thing.

It sat in their living room.

They hung clothes on it to dry for 10 years.

The value went where?

From here to there.

It dropped.

Now, you know what you don't see at the art sale?

Even if you go 145, even if you go 155 and it's going to close at 2, they don't sit their

children out on the table, stick an orange sticker on there that says $1.

Some people are like, you're coming on the right day.

You guys are on the right day.

They don't do that, right?

Why?

Because there's value.

Because you never do that with your children.

Matter of fact, you'd sell yourself for a buck to save your child, right?

And that's what happened to Zacchaeus.

The generosity and the restitution that came in his life is because bucks and stuff were

up here and then all of a sudden when he met Jesus, it went down here, right?

And Jesus went up here.

It changed.

So what are you saying, pastor?

Do I need to give my bucks and stuff away like candy in a parade?

Is that what you're saying?

No, what I'm saying is does Jesus hold that kind of position in your life?

With your bucks and your stuff and everything else that's in your life.

Is Jesus up that high that everything else just kind of falls off the mat?

It doesn't even matter that much.

Does he have that kind of position, right?

Is it like if it's Jesus or your stuff, you give it away like candy in a parade, right?

What part of your life?

We cannot achieve proper balance in our lives in any area of our lives, including bucks

and stuff, if we don't have Jesus at that kind of position in our life.

He has to be in that kind of position.

He must be Lord of my bucks and he must be Lord of my stuff and he must be Lord of everything

else.

It's got to be up here.

And that's exactly what happens to Zacchaeus.

And you see this in the Word of God and you see this with Zacchaeus and you see this same

scenario on play or replay in another position or another place that Jesus is.

In Luke chapter 18 verse 18, Jesus runs into another guy and it's similar in nature.

Luke 18:18

It says this, now a certain ruler asked him saying, this is a ruler, good teacher, what

shall I do to inherit the eternal life?

I talked about this guy just a few months ago from a different angle.

So Jesus said to him, why do you call me good?

No one is good but one, that is God.

You know the commandments, do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false

witness.

Honor your father and mother.

And he said all these things I've kept from my youth.

So when Jesus heard these things, he said to him, you still lack one thing.

So all you have in distribute to the poor and you'll have treasure in heaven and come

follow me.

But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful for he was very rich.

Word of God tells us he walked away.

Jesus bumps into another guy, right?

Another bucks and stuff encounter takes place.

And this guy is not a self-exorbed, crooked tax collector who's hated by everybody.

This guy knows the Bible.

This guy is a ruler.

This guy is respected.

This guy was in the temple.

He understands the commandments, right?

He probably sat on some committee at a church.

He probably had a Jesus fish bumper sticker on his camel, right?

Oh well, maybe not yet.

Okay.

He was blessed.

He was wealthy.

He was religious.

And he wants to do the right thing.

He asks the right questions.

What do I do to get into the kingdom of God?

He's not like Zacchaeus at all.

Zacchaeus hop around trying to find and get a look at Jesus, see what's going on, right?

He's religious.

He's got position.

But after spending just a little bit of time with Jesus, he's not talking like Zacchaeus,

is he?

You don't see any wild declarations taking place with this guy.

Jesus calls this guy out on his bucks and his stuff.

And this guy gets sad.

And he just turns and walks away.

And Jesus knows something when he's talking to this guy.

He knows this.

He knows that we can only serve one master and it can't be bucks and stuff.

We only can serve one master.

Luke 16, 13 says this, no servant can serve two masters.

For either he will hate the one and love the other, right?

Notice the contrast there.

Or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.

You cannot serve God and mammon, which is money.

That translates as money.

We can only have one master.

You'll love one or hate the other.

You'll be loyal to one and despise the other.

You see this massive contrast in that scripture.

That's to help you see the position, right?

Jesus, if he's up here this high, then everything else is down here.

How many know second place loser, right?

Compared to Jesus.

Jesus is up here.

He said you'll be loyal to one and despise the other or you'll hate one and love the

other.

Zach's loyalty changed.

It changed.

He bumped Jesus up here and he makes crazy decorations.

This verse makes me think of something.

Something that I remember from when I was young.

A young girl, I should say.

How many of you know what a master key is?

Raise your hand if you know what a master key is.

OK, most of you do.

Well, a master key is a key that opens doors.

And if you have a master key to a building, now this is an old fashioned skeleton key.

But if you had a master key, you could go into a building, a facility, and you can literally

open every door in that facility.

I remember going into a place one time and it was a commercial building and they handed

me a master key and I had to just go try it.

I was like, I want to see if this opens.

You know, and I was running around the building, open doors up and apologizing a lot.

You know, just step in places.

But it opens every door.

There's not a door.

There's not a cat.

If you have a master key, it opens the door to everything.

Every single door, every place in the building, there's not a place you can go in that building

that you can't get into with the master key.

And that's what that's what happened with Zach.

Jesus became master of his life.

And there wasn't one area of his life that God didn't have access to.

There wasn't one door that God couldn't open.

There wasn't one window cabinet.

And it was nothing that he withheld from God.

And it's it.

Listen, the master key controls it all.

It controls the doors.

It controls the cabinets.

It controls it.

And whatever is master in your life controls you.

It controls what's going on.

If addiction is the master in your life, it will control every room.

It will affect every room in the building.

Right.

If selfishness is a master in your life, it will control the house.

If selfishness is the master, it controls the facility and those step into every single

room.

That was the rich man's problem.

Not Zachius.

He got it right.

But the rich guy, he wasn't willing to hand Jesus the key.

He said, keep an eye on that.

Who's master?

I'm going to ask you to stand.

I wanted to start off from doing this message series on bucks and stuff, because there's

one thing that you have to absolutely get right.

And that's who holds the master key.

We never achieve balance.

You cannot achieve balance in Jesus Christ.

If anything else is holding the key, the master key in your life, you'll have rooms that will

be out of control.

Something else will be affecting.

You'll never get to a place of balance.

You can't do it.

So I'm going to do something a little different.

I wanted to give you something.

Sometimes I'll put something in your hand, because sometimes I talk and you all go home

and you forget 10 seconds after you get out of here because you're thinking about burgers

and fries and pizza or whatever else you want to go get something to eat with.

You can't get Chick-fil-A.

You can't open on Sunday.

But you're thinking about something.

Well, I want to put something in your hand.

So when you walk out of here, because this is key, a little pun intended, to this whole

message series.

Who's got the master key?

You look at Zacchaeus and you look at the rich young ruler.

It had nothing to do with their past, did it?

It had to do with their present and who had the key in their life.

You see what God does.

The difference between the two.

So I'm going to ask you to do this.

I want you to, now Pastor Eric, he's got these keys up there at East Shore.

If you're listening online this morning and you type in the chat and you give the information,

I'll send you one of these in the mail so you have it.

But for everybody else that's in the house, we've got keys up here.

So I want everybody to come up and grab a key.

You can hang out up front here.

We're just going to pray for a few minutes.

But just make your way up to the front.

I want you to get it in your hand.

Just stay here for prayer if you would.

Get a key.

I give you little things like this so you can hang up somewhere.

You can put it in your pocket.

You can hang it up in your car.

Man, you can make a necklace out of this.

It's small enough.

Put it somewhere that you're going to see it.

Because this matters.

This is something you've got to ask yourself every single day.

Who's master?

Who has the master key in your life?

Who's opening and closing the doors?

If you would move forward a little bit.

We've got some that are just still in the back.

Move forward a little bit if you can.

As you come in, if I could give you just a little bit of a personal story.

This is back when I was a teenager.

I'm a pretty single focused guy.

My wife will tell me if I get on something I'm like a dog on a bone.

And I don't even know what's going on around me.

And it's kind of true.

And I've been that way my entire life.

And when I was young, I kind of developed this love for automobiles.

And I was 14 years of age.

I started really loving cars.

I couldn't drive one yet.

Just around on the farm.

But I loved cars.

And I remember at 15 I went to work for this guy for the entire summer for free if he would

teach me how to restore cars.

And I worked an entire summer.

Got no pay.

Just so he would teach me.

And at 15 I launched into restoring cars.

And my life revolved around cars.

Cars held the master key to my life.

They really did.

I remember coming home.

I'd have homework.

And I remember walking in the door.

We had a washer and dryer right inside the door at our house.

And I remember throwing my homework there.

And I'm thinking why would I expend my genius on homework?

I'm going to the garage.

I'm not messing with that.

And chores.

Why would I waste my time with chores?

I'm going to expend my work and my time and my habits over here.

And I kind of got obsessed for a period of time.

And oddly enough, I know that sounds utterly ridiculous.

But it had the key to my heart.

And it had the key to my life.

And it literally affected every door in my life.

I still love cars but not nowhere near the same.

I had to put all that down at one point.

Because listen, whatever.

It sounds strange but it affected my thinking, it affected how I spent my time, it affected

how I spent my money, it affected how I thought about things, you know, the next part.

Everything it consumed my house.

Right?

Me.

My facility.

It had the master key.

So I'm here to tell you, if you don't got the master key, if God doesn't have the master

key, you will never achieve spiritual balance.

You can't do it.

It cannot happen.

I'm just telling you, honest and straight, who has the key?

Who has the key?

Bucks and stuff are just one area of your life.

You got to turn it over.

You got a room that's called the thought room, right?

Your inner thoughts.

That's a scary room.

You know why?

Nobody sees that on the outside, just you know it.

That's a scary room.

Guys, ladies, that's a scary room.

Come on.

That's a scary room.

You got to give that over to Jesus.

You want to get balance in your head and in your thought life, you got to turn that over

to Jesus.

You got to open that thing up.

You got to say, Jesus, what should I be thinking on, and what should I not be thinking on?

Because everything you think on, right, develops into a belief that drops into your heart, and

whatever belief you have in your heart translates into action in your life.

Scary room.

Who's got, who's the master?

Who's the master?

The master key by your heads.

It's you and Jesus.

I can't see what you're saying to Him.

It doesn't even matter if I could.

Who has the master key?

Is it in every area of your life?

Father, we come to you today.

Lord God, somebody's holding the key.

And Lord God, we're all got a physical key in our hand.

But Lord, we know this.

God, there's a spiritual key.

And God, Zacchaeus shows us, he teaches us.

God, there's a short piece of scripture given to him, but he shows us what it is.

Lord, God's a hand the key over to you.

And Lord, you begin to make the calls.

And God, we'll make wild, radical declarations for you.

God, when we hand it over to you and we give every room, got every room, every window,

every cabinet, got every piece of access, God, everything's open and before you and

laid before you, God, you can open every single door and influence our lives.

And God is there where we find balance.

It is there when we get it right.

So Lord, I'm asking right now, God, for each person in the house, for each person that's

listening online, God, for those, Lord, that are east shore, God, I pray right now, Lord,

that you would just minister.

God, that you would touch.

And Lord, that they would decide who has the key.

Some of them right now, they got to hand it over, physically hand it over.

God, they got to lay it out and say it's yours.

God, you're going to start calling it in my life.

Box and stuff and every other area of my life, God, it's yours.

Lord, I give it over to you.

I confess.

I repent.

I confess that something else has the master key.

I repent of that.

I turn from that and I hand it to you.
