Well, welcome.

It is so good to be here with you all this morning.

As you guys from LifeHouse Church, we're going to be talking about the

life of the church.

And I'm just so excited to be able to share with you today.

Happy Father's Day to all you amazing fathers out there.

My husband Brad and I have, well, I really have been able to be apart

from LifeHouse from the start.

And Brad, as soon as we got married, jumped in.

And we have loved serving here.

It has been an absolute privilege.

And I am not talking about moving because then we would be able to

actually hear the message today.

So I want to say just a quick happy Father's Day.

Can everyone turn around and say hi, Brad, back there?

The guy with the ball cap.

Hi, Brad.

That's my amazing husband.

Just a shout out to him.

He's incredible.

I'm sure you've seen our two wild children.

Well, one wild child, one sweet one running around here.

We've got a two-year-old, Maisie.

She's in all pink today.

I'm sure you'll see her at some point.

She is wild, energetic, strong.

She will be our leader for sure.

And then sweet Mia in the back is 10 months.

And she is full of joy and just learning all of the things in life.

It's so exciting to just watch them both learn and grow.

And I just recently found a very cool fact about myself, well,

about my hometown that I just have to share now.

Any time I'm going to do a bio, this is my new cool fact.

So I was born in Wimber, Pennsylvania.

Raise your hand if you've heard of Wimber, Pennsylvania.

Okay, more than I thought.

It's like the middle of nowhere.

It's like two hours west from here.

And I was born in the same, I've got to look at this guy's name,

I was born in the same place as the original Tarzan, Johnny Weissmiller.

Anybody know him personally?

I don't know.

I could have, right?

How crazy is that?

I was born in the same place as Tarzan.

So shout out Mr. Doug at East Shore Campus this morning.

If you are there, thank you for giving me that cool fact.

He taught me that a few weeks ago when I got to Vista.

When I got to visit the East Shore Campus.

If he's at East Shore today, would you guys, everybody just run over

and high five Mr. Doug really quick.

Just, we'll all give you virtual high fives over here.

But run over and give Mr. Doug a high five.

That is such a cool fact that I learned about myself.

But again, I just want to say really quickly,

before we jump into God's Word this morning,

Happy Father's Day to the best dad in the world.

Dad, I'm so grateful for all that you've done serving with you here

and just in our community has been a dream.

I've learned so much from you and I'm grateful.

I think we got a picture, if we can show you up there.

Yeah, that's me and my dad on my third birthday.

You are the most amazing dad to our girls and leader of our family.

I'm grateful for the impact that you've had on Brad

and the girls and our lives.

So again, so excited to be here.

Okay, if you were not here on Mother's Day,

you definitely want to go back online

and just check out the message from that day.

I had the incredible opportunity to be up here

with some really strong, amazing women.

And we got to share just pieces of our stories.

We shared parts of our stories where some difficult seasons.

We had some difficult seasons of change,

seasons of waiting, seasons of loneliness.

And we realized through conversating and sharing our stories

that every single one of us got through those seasons

by rooting ourselves in Jesus.

And I got to share one of my very favorite,

which I think, if you can quote me if I'm wrong,

I think this used to be one of your favorite passages as well.

But one of my very favorite scriptures is John 15, 5,

that says, I'm the vine and you are the branch.

If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit,

but apart from me, you can do nothing.

So we talked all about remaining in Jesus,

and that's how we get through those difficult seasons.

We know every single, I'm sure you could line up up here

and share your testimony, your story.

Every single one of us face difficulties in this life.

Difficulties that may seem hopeless,

that may be really difficult, but we got the good news, right?

As Christ followers, we know that the only way

to get through those times is to root ourselves

in the firm foundation.

We just sang about it, right?

The firm foundation of Jesus Christ.

We heard this through the personal stories on Mother's Day,

and I'm sure we've all witnessed it in our lives,

and if we haven't, we certainly will.

John 15 reminds us that apart from Jesus, we can do nothing.

So today, we're gonna spend our time exploring

how we remain rooted in Jesus

through every messy curve that this life throws at us,

every twist and turn.

What does it look like on a practical level

to remain rooted when the unexpected happens?

How do we stay rooted?

What does this look like in everyday life?

And don't you just love the Bible

because it has everything that we need?

In one way or another, any question you have, I promise,

will be answered through the Word of God,

and so naturally, we're gonna look there today.

So if you, anybody got the good old hard back with them today?

If you've got that, go ahead and just get that out

in a little bit, I'll give you a head start.

We're gonna be in 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel today,

so that's in the beginning of the book.

Go ahead and just find 1 Samuel.

We'll jump there in just a moment.

But looking to Scripture, we see the answer to this question,

how we remain rooted, and I love a good process.

There's three steps that we find in Scripture.

Identify, remove, reroute.

Do you know what that makes?

Err.

Everybody go, err.

That's so like Father's Day and manly of us, right?

Err.

Identify, remove, reroute.

Identify, remove, reroute.

If we wanna remain rooted in Christ,

we need to first identify the fruit that we're producing.

Second, we need to remove the sin that's in our life.

And third, we need to reroute ourselves into the things of God.

Life goes up, as we've heard, and life goes down.

We need to live this process.

Identify, remove, reroute.

We've gotta constantly be identifying what's going on in our life,

getting that sin out of there,

and rerouting back into the things of God.

And a lot of us have heard the story of David and Goliath,

probably growing up, maybe if you grew up in kids' church

or you've been around church at all,

you've probably heard the story of David and Goliath.

But did you know that David was a king,

like just like us, who faced a lot, well, we're not kings,

but like us, he faced a lot of ups and downs.

He had a lot of twists and turns

in his relationship with the Lord and his journey.

And despite his profound love for the Lord,

which we're gonna hear about in just a moment,

he did have ups and downs that caused him to get rooted in his own desires,

to pull him away from the things of the Lord.

Early, so if you read in Scripture,

the Lord himself literally describes David

as a man after God's own heart.

That is like the ultimate compliment that you can receive from God himself.

From a young age, David was so rooted in the things of God,

like he made a difference to everyone around him.

He was a young shepherd boy just faithfully serving in his father's fields.

And one day, God sent a prophet named Samuel

to come and to anoint David as the next king.

And this was an extremely significant moment

because God himself would handpick the king

and their time for them to rightfully rule.

And so Samuel was being sent by God to anoint David

to be a future king of a nation.

That's like a huge deal for this small shepherd boy

who was just faithfully serving the Lord.

So this happens, and then David just, it wasn't for right at that moment.

So this happens, Samuel leaves, David goes back to the fields,

and is just faithfully serving the Lord, honoring his dad,

taking care of the sheep, praying, praising the Lord, just doing his thing.

And he also had a very large skill to play an instrument called the lyre.

Say lyre.

Not like you think, right?

The instrument lyre.

And so David played this instrument,

and he was noticed by someone at the palace.

And just like everything that David did,

he played the lyre unto the Lord.

It was, it just made everyone quiet in a room.

It brought peace, it brought grace, it brought comfort.

And so King Saul heard this, who was the king at the time,

Saul called him to the palace and asked him to come in

because at the time, scripture tells us that Saul was being tormented

by demonic spirits, and he couldn't, he tried everything.

He could not get rid of these demonic spirits.

So he called David to the kingdom and asked him to play the lyre.

And do you know what happened when David got in the room

and he played his instrument unto the Lord?

What happened?

Those demons fled.

That's amazing.

That is amazing.

Those, you could see the fruit of David being rooted in God

flowed out of him, and it literally opened doors for him

to get into the palace.

That's a huge deal.

The light and peace and grace that flew from David

was the fruit of being rooted in Christ.

It's evident to everyone around him.

So if you've got your Bibles,

they're also going to turn it on the screens for you.

We're going to pick up in David's story just as he hears

about this Philistine giant that is defiling the name of his God,

and David is burning with righteous anger.

And again, the king is starting to know him.

So the king notices that David's burning with his righteous anger,

and we're going to jump right into their conversation.

So 1 Samuel 17, we're going to start in verse 32.

Chapter 17, verse 32.

Say there when you're there.

Thank you.

We're going to wait a long time for you.

All right.

David said to Saul,

Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine.

Your servant will go and fight him.

Saul replied,

You are not going to be able to go against the Philistine and fight him.

You're only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.

But David said to Saul,

Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep.

When a lion and a bear came and carried off the sheep from the flock,

I went after it.

I struck it and rescued it from the sheep's mouth.

When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it down, and killed it.

Your servant has killed both lion and the bear.

This uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them.

Because he has defiled the armies of the living God,

the Lord who rescued me from the pawl of the lion and the pawl of the bear

will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.

Saul said to David,

Go and the Lord be with you.

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic and put a coat of armor around him

and a bronze helmet on his head.

David fastened his own sword over the tunic and tried to walk around

because he was not used to them.

I cannot go in these, he said, because I'm not used to them.

So he took them off.

Then he took his staff in his hand.

He chose five smooth stones from the stream and put them in his shepherd's pouch.

With his sling in hand, he approached the Philistine.

Meanwhile, the Philistine with his shield barrier in front of him

kept coming closer to David.

He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy,

glowing with health and handsome.

He despised him.

He said to David,

Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?

And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

Come here, he said, and I'll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animal.

David said to the Philistine, listen, this is powerful.

David said to the Philistine,

You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,

but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty,

the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled.

This day, the Lord will deliver you into my hands.

I will strike you down and cut off your head.

This very day, I will give the carcass of the Philistine army to the birds

and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear

that the Lord saves, but for the battle is the Lord's,

and he will give all of you into our hands.

As the Philistine moved closer to attack him,

David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him.

Reaching into his bag, taking out a stone,

he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead.

The stone sunk into his forehead.

He fell face down, so David triumped over the Philistine

with a sling and a stone.

Without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

Wow. I know we know that story, but just wow.

Reading it for the millionth time, it's still wow.

An entire army, a king, a big, strong king of a nation,

were cowering in fear, and this little shepherd boy

was able to stand up and fight an enemy because he was rooted in the Lord.

There is no question that at this time in David's life,

he was firmly rooted in the things of the Lord.

He spent his time in that field, praying, fighting lions and bears

in the name of the Lord.

He was rooted in God, and it showed.

David's fruit was evident. We saw this.

He responded in strength and faithfulness immediately.

Immediately, he burned with righteous anger.

When he heard this giant was coming against his God,

he burned with righteous anger.

He was courageous and bold.

I don't know if you caught that one part.

David was coming toward him, this giant.

I don't have the statistics, but you can look it up on Google.

The dude was huge, and he was coming against this little shepherd boy.

Did David get scared?

Does Scripture say that he trembled or he backed up a little bit

or even just stood still?

He ran towards the battle line.

That is fruit of being rooted in God.

When we look at the fruit someone is producing,

it becomes so evident whether they are rooted in God or not.

Our fruit is the outward emotions that we show, right?

It's how we respond.

It's the way we speak, maybe the way we speak to our spouse

or our children or someone at our workplace.

It's the way we hold our tongue when we should hold our tongue, right?

It's revealed in our actions,

the choices that we make from little to medium to big choices.

The fruit is what's visible in our life.

Either our fruit is going to reflect Christ or it's not.

There is no in-between.

The first step in remaining rooted in Christ

is to identify the fruit we're producing.

Say it again. Say, identify.

Identify. Give me the R. Do it.

R. You're never going to forget this, right?

It is an honest inventory of our life.

We see David's story continues through 1 and 2 Samuel.

If you haven't had a chance to read deep into David's story

through both of those books, make that your next, like, Devo time

because it is so good and there's so much in there.

After he defeats Goliath, he goes on to just be a great warrior.

King Saul sees so much value in him and God's hand on him.

He pulls him close almost as a family member.

David ends up marrying King Saul's daughter

and becomes pretty much best friends with King Saul's son.

He goes on to win many battles,

to do so many things for his nation and for the Lord.

We're going to skip to a little bit later in his story,

another familiar part of his story.

At this point, King Saul has now passed away.

And so remember that prophecy that Samuel had spoken over David.

Now is all coming to fruition.

So David is now king of a nation.

Everything that God spoke had gone into order.

King Saul has passed away.

We're going to read this familiar part of David's story.

This time we're going to be in 2 Samuel, chapter 11.

So if you're not there, go ahead and turn.

2 Samuel, chapter 11.

This time we are going to start in verse 1.

Say there if you're there.

All right, 2 Samuel, chapter 11, verse 1.

2 Samuel 11:1

The man said,

Then David said to Uriah,

Go down to your house and wash your feet.

So Uriah left the palace and a gift from the king was sent after him.

But Uriah slept at the entrance of the palace with all of his master's sermons

and did not go to his house.

David was told Uriah did not go home.

So he asked Uriah,

Haven't you just come back from a military campaign?

Why didn't you go home?

Uriah said to David,

The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents.

And my commander Joab and my lord's men are camped in open country.

How could I go to my house and eat and drink and make love to my wife?

As surely as I live, I will not do such a thing.

Then David said to him,

Stay here one more day and tomorrow I will send you back.

So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

At David's invitation, he ate and he drank and David made him drunk.

In the evening, Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master's servants.

He did not go home.

In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.

In it, he wrote, Put Uriah out on the front lines where the fighting is fiercest.

Then withdraw from him and he will be struck down and die.

That is another wow.

What a change in fruit we are seeing.

This is the same David that was courageous and bold and gracious and kind and fought a giant.

What a change in fruit.

Instead of standing strong and courageous like he did against the lions, the bears, the giants,

he is now cowardly and weak.

He went from a calm, calculated man to now in just a spiraling frenzy trying to cover up his sin.

Let's just recap what happened in that story real quick.

David commits adultery.

He sleeps with someone who is not his wife, somebody else's wife.

He gets the woman pregnant and then he tries to blame her husband.

He tries to make her husband think it was him.

When that doesn't work, he tries again by getting the guy drunk to send him home.

Hopefully this time, the guy will think that it's his child.

When that doesn't work, he literally sends Uriah to battle with his own death sentence in hand.

Did you catch that?

Uriah went back to battle with his own death sentence to give to the commander.

What a difference.

It is evident here that David was not rooted in the Lord.

He was derailed by his sin.

Step two in the process of remaining rooted in Christ is to remove our sin.

Say remove.

I won't make you say error.

Remove.

Remove our sin.

Every single one of us deal with sin on a regular basis.

1 John 1, 8 says, if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

We can admit it or not, but scripture lays it right out there for us.

Every single one of us fall short of God's glory and we sin and we mess up.

We are messy people.

I don't know if you're anything like me, but I think sometimes we can categorize our sin.

We have the big bad ones that are like adultery, like we just read about, murder, addiction.

Then we have the ones that we downplay, like anger, jealousy, lust, gluttony.

It can become really easy to let ourselves off the hook with the ones that don't seem so bad,

that don't seem so life-altering.

We can tend to let ourselves off the hook.

I found myself in this exact pickle just like maybe like three weeks ago.

I was noticing that in my day-to-day life, I was just getting a little bit more snippy.

Have you ever had those days where you're a little bit more snippy?

I'm a stay-at-home mom with my two girls and I love it and it's awesome, but they are tiring sometimes.

And I found myself, I was getting just a little bit more snippy than usual.

I was a little bit more impatient.

I was a little bit maybe more sassy.

Our poor dog, I even took it out on our poor dog.

I was just getting a little mean, if we're going to be honest.

I was getting a little mean.

And Brad, I would have a long day with the girls.

Brad would have a long day at work.

He would come home from work and do you think my sassiness stopped then?

No, it escalated.

I got a little bit more sassy with Brad and I'm sure he is like, what is going on?

And so I just noticed, you know, I'm reacting to things that I wouldn't usually react to in this way.

And I was talking to a friend, a sweet friend and a mentor of mine and I was telling her this and I'm like,

you know what, I don't know what's going on, but do you think maybe something's happening?

Like, I don't know.

I'm just being really snippy.

I'm not sure what it is.

And she ever so lovingly and kindly and graciously pointed me in the direction that maybe something was going on under the surface.

Maybe there was something a little bit there that needed to get removed.

And she was right through a lot of conversation and prayer time together.

I realized that I had some jealousy and I did not want to say it.

That feels I don't even like saying it up here.

It feels yucky.

It's embarrassing.

I don't want to admit it.

But when I look back at my situation day after day, I'm with the girls.

You know, Brad is leaving and going to work.

And I got to thinking, you know, he goes to work.

Nobody follows him into the bathroom.

Nobody knocks his plate down during lunch.

Nobody eats every snack that he tries to put in his mouth.

Nobody is saying, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy all day long to him.

And guess what?

I got a little bit of jealousy that he got to leave every day and I had to stay home.

But I did not want to admit that because, first of all, it's embarrassing.

It sounds like a bad mom, which is a lie.

It's just the truth.

But I didn't want to admit it, right?

I didn't want him to think I don't love being at home or I wasn't grateful for this gift of being with my girls because I am.

But the truth is, I let this little piece of sin slide into my life.

And guess what?

It was becoming evident in my fruit.

I was getting snippy.

I was impatient.

Are those fruits of the spirit and of God?

No, no, it was becoming evident.

And thankfully, I had this friend to so graciously call me out on it and to help me get there.

And I was able to talk to Brad, spend time with the Lord, get my heart right and repent.

And can I tell you the joy and the freedom that I found in that?

When you walk away from sin, there is no freedom like walking in forgiveness.

My fruit shifted from grumpy and impatient to joyful.

And can I tell you something else?

That sin, though it might seem small, might sound silly or stupid or whatever you want to call it, that sin had the potential to wreak havoc on my family.

If I let that sin go and it built and it built, do you know that resentment would have built in my marriage?

I would have been probably not as good of mom as I should have to my daughters.

And guess what?

Ultimately, it would have affected my relationship with the Lord.

It would have brought separation.

The reality is that every sin, no matter how big or small or whatever category that we want to put it in, it has the same outcome.

It has the same outcome.

Every sin leads to separation from God and spiritual death.

There is no escaping that.

We have to remove the sin from our lives if we want to remain rooted in Christ.

Do you know David should have stopped the moment he was on that roof and he glanced up at Sheba?

That's when he should have stopped that right in that moment.

He should have chose to stop it and walk away and turn his head.

But he didn't.

He gave into temptation and it separated him from God.

He was rooting himself in his own desires and it separated him from God.

And in his case, it caused literal death.

There was death on his hands from the choice he made to sin.

Roman 623 says, For the wages of sin are death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The outcome of sin is death.

But as Christ followers, we have the gift of forgiveness.

When Christ died on that cross for us, it was so that we could walk away from our sin.

We could choose to lay it at his feet and live a life forgiven and free.

That's why he died on that cross for us.

So we can be in communion, in relationship, in freedom with him.

If we want to remain rooted in Christ, we have to first identify the fruit that we're producing.

We have to remove the sin from our lives.

And then we have to reroute ourselves in the Lord.

Step three to remaining rooted is to reroute ourselves in the Lord.

Because that sin that we step into so often causes separation, it creates this void in our life that needs to fill.

There's this spiritual void that we need to dump the things of God back into to strengthen ourselves.

It is so important to come back and root ourselves in the things of God.

Things like being in God's word daily.

The word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, right?

Find a way to immerse yourself in scripture, whether that's a Bible plan,

whether that's just going straight through your hardback Bible, whatever it looks like.

Find a way to get yourself in the word of God.

Like I said at the beginning, it has every answer in one way or the other.

I promise you, whatever question, whatever clarity that you are looking for, it is in the word of God.

And God will speak to you through his word.

Find a rhythm of prayer and worship in your life.

This could look like I don't know if you're a morning person like me.

Maybe this looks like waking up hours before your family is stirring.

The only time you can get quiet before everyone wakes up or if you're like my husband,

it's after everybody goes to sleep because you're the night aisle and you can get quiet with the Lord when no one else is distracted,

when there's no distractions, there's no busyness and it just slows down.

Maybe for you, it's sneaking away during nap time or during a break at work or maybe you've got a long commute or a drive.

Find whatever way that fits into it, whatever way that you can make happen in your schedule.

Maybe it's dancing around your kitchen with your kids.

Anybody like to dance and worship in their kitchen?

Is that just that's just me.

Okay. All right.

Well, I love dancing around in my kitchen and worshiping with my family.

Whatever way that you can be intentional to pull praise and worship and prayer into your life, do it.

It will be a lifeline.

And you guys know this last one.

If you have been with us at LifeHouse for any amount of time, what is the last thing I'm going to say in order to grow spiritually and root back into the things of God?

We don't do life alone.

This is the way that God created us to be to be in community with one another, to keep each other accountable, to encourage one another and build each other up.

There is so much strength in community, especially community surrendered centered around God.

That is where you will find your people that you can lean on through the ugly.

You'll have the people call you out when you're jealous about something or you've got a sin that you don't even want to name.

Find your people that are going to love you and walk with you.

I have been so beyond blessed in my life in different seasons, and sometimes it's been different people that God has brought in my life to encourage me to pull me out of those those dark places to spur me on to the things of God.

And recently, one of those close friends and I, we had an opportunity for just a little bit of time.

We were meeting up really early before our children woke up.

We were meeting really early in the morning at a diner and we were just spending time in God's word and praying with each other and encouraging each other.

It was it was a wonderful time.

And one of my favorite things that we did there was we created this space to confess our sins to each other.

And at first, like it felt scary to do.

It felt a little bit awkward.

But can I tell you the freedom?

There was no shame.

There was love.

There was accountability.

It was everything that God has created us to be in sharing and confessing our sins to each other.

I found so much strength and so much growth in being able to do that with a dear friend that I knew was going to not judge me, but spur me on to get right with the Lord and to get my heart where it needed to be.

Do not do life alone.

There are people in this room that love you, that care for you, and that want to walk with you through every single up and down.

Don't do life alone.

And second, Samuel, we see the accountability from David's community, right?

We see if you continue on, we're not going to read it all today, but if you continue on, you'll see that Nathan comes along and completely calls David out on his sin.

He urges him to repent.

He even shares this whole story to get David to understand, like, the depths of what he had done wrong.

Definitely read it on your own time.

But he calls him out and he says, come back to the things of God.

David chooses to repent.

He returns to God.

He asks for forgiveness and he gets himself rerouted into the things of God.

Sometimes when we identify our fruit, things are going to look good.

We're going to see fruit.

We're going to look at our fruit.

We're going to see that is reflecting God.

It's beautiful.

It's right where it should be.

But sometimes when we look at our fruit and we're honest and we identify that fruit, it is going to reflect sin.

It is going to reflect things that are not of God.

And if we don't remove those things, it is going to separate us from our creator.

If we want to remain rooted in Christ, we have to identify our fruit, remove our sin and root ourselves in the things of God.

Let's say it together.

Identify, remove, reroute.

Identify, remove, reroute.

Give me one last er.

Er.

Identify, remove, reroute.

This is not a one time process either.

This isn't just something we do when we give our life to the Lord the first time.

This is the process of being made like Jesus over and over.

You might need to do this monthly, weekly, daily.

We saw through David's story at any time we can be separated from God.

It just takes we can have beautiful fruit one moment and one choice of sin can turn our fruit ugly.
