What I See Is Not Always What I Get - Pastor Kipp Penrod

Amen, amen.

Listen, it's good to be in God's house.

It's good to feel His presence in worship.

I heard you singing back there.

I don't know what you felt back there, but I could just feel God moving.

Felt it all morning long.

Looked up at 345 this morning.

Could not go back to sleep.

So man, Sunday nap is going to be in order.

But I just have felt God's presence literally since early this morning.

Just praying.

So just get ready because God's getting ready to do something.

And I believe that with all my heart and hope you came in expecting.

We should every time we come in the house of God, we should be expecting to meet the

Lord and just to see what He's got for you this morning.

And it's good.

Hey, I want to make an extended invitation to you after the next gathering.

After second gathering, we're going to have a get together.

If you saw back there, it's a little decorated.

Pastor Andrew and Alicia are closing out their season here on staff at Life House and they're

moving on in ministry to their own work where they've been assigned.

And you can chat with them about that.

But we want to get after second gathering, we're going to pray over them.

We're going to have a time of blessing and just the time to get together.

They're different.

This is I don't get up and preach.

It's not this kind of format.

We come together and worship and God just moves and it's cool.

Sometimes there's testimony.

How many know it's good to hear somebody's story about what God's doing in their life.

There's testimony sometimes.

Sometimes there's just prayers going on.

It's kind of we don't we don't set an agenda at that.

We just worship God.

We get together and sing and worship and lift up his name.

So if you can come out this evening, we're excited about Revive every time.

I've never walked away from Revive gathering.

I thought, man, that was a waste of time.

Never once.

We've always go away saying, man, God was so good.

He spoke things.

Amen.

If you haven't, if you don't believe me, just talk to somebody else because you're like,

well, he's the pastor.

He's always going to say that.

Not true.

Talk to somebody that's been there.

Well, here I'm going to give I'm going to make a statement this morning.

Start this message off.

Sometimes what I see is not always what I get.

Right.

Sometimes what I see with my eyes is not always what I get.

Sometimes what I observe and will not be an accurate depiction of what's really taking

place.

Sometimes my interpretation of what I'm seeing with my eyes is not precisely what's happening

in front of me.

Sometimes what I see is not what I'm going to get.

Right.

Say it with me.

Sometimes what I see.

Sometimes what I see is not always what I want to get or maybe what I'm not getting.

OK.

All right.

This is true of many things in life, and it can be particularly true in a church.

Things happen in church sometimes that we might see it, but we're not really picking

up on what's going on.

And it depends on your background, it depends where you're coming from.

Water baptism is kind of one of those things.

Right.

You know, and water baptism is one of our favorites Sundays around here when we baptize

somebody.

It's a celebration.

It's amazing.

It's wonderful.

We set our little baptismal pool up usually right here, sometimes right in the middle.

And right.

And for a Christian like we're giddy on Baptism Sunday.

We're excited as soon as you come in the room and you know, people got towels are getting

baptized and they're slogging around in their bare feet, you know, and we're going to hear

testimony what's going on.

And when somebody testifies with God's done, we throw them backwards in the water.

Right.

Because it represents the old man or woman dying to sin and coming back up alive.

And we cheer and we raise our hands and we sing songs and we do all those things.

And for us, man, it what we see is what it is.

We love it.

Right.

And if you're not a believer and you've never heard anything about Christianity and it's

your first time coming into a church and you walk in and you're like, why do they got a

sauna?

Right.

Why do they got a whirlpool up in front of the church?

And you know, the preacher gets in there and they're wondering like, why are they dunking

them backwards?

Right.

They're throwing them backwards and pulling them back.

They're seeing it, but they're not getting it.

Right.

They know what's happening, but they don't know what's happening.

It happens in church all the time.

And if you're familiar, you know what's going on.

If you're not, this is a strange thing.

They don't people backwards.

Everybody cheers and goes crazy.

And they're like, what is going on right now?

Communion can be one of those things.

Right.

It's not always what you're seeing is not always what you're getting.

Sometimes it's communion for us is amazing.

We're going to have communion at the end of gathering today.

And for us, it's a celebration of and a remembrance time of what Jesus did on the cross.

We remember the blood.

We remember his body.

We remember all those things.

And if you're a believer, it's sacred is holy.

It's a time to commune with God.

But if you're an unbeliever, you've never experienced any of this.

You're like, they give me a little cup of juice and they give me a little tiny piece

of bread.

Right.

This one, this one satisfy an aunt's appetite.

What is going on here?

Well, because what you see is not always what you get.

And I'm not even going to talk about foot washing.

Okay.

You know, there's the right.

What you see is not always what you get, and they're not seeing they're seeing it, but

they're not fully getting it.

And sometimes it's like that for us.

And there's another area in the church that could be true.

And that's worship.

Say worship this morning.

Worship.

Even if you've attended church for a long period of time, our definition of worship

might not be completely accurate.

Even if you've seen what takes place in a worship service, our definition might be skewed

just a bit.

We might be seen it, but we might totally not be getting it right.

It might it might not look like that because sometimes if you just go to church and the

only thing you've ever used is church for your definition of worship, you're going to

think it's a couple of things.

Right.

You get up and sing three songs, maybe four, depending on the church that you're in.

And that is part of worship.

We talk about worship and giving in the offering.

Right.

We talk about that every single week here.

And then it's actually attending a worship service.

But that's not the whole picture of worship.

We can should participate in those.

We can participate in those.

Right.

We should do that.

But that's not all of it.

So if you got your Bibles, I want us to just broaden our view this morning a little bit

about worship.

If you got your Bibles, you can go to Genesis chapter four, first book in the Bible, right.

Chapter four, verse one.

And while you're turning there, I'm going to pray over the reading of God's word.

Father, we thank you for this day.

I thank you for each one that's in the house.

God, I pray you'd open our hearts to worship.

God, that you would guide, direct us, Lord, as we lean in, God, as we, Lord, literally

tilt in to hear your word.

And God, as we get ready to receive and, Lord, God ultimately respond in worship to

you, we'll give you praise.

We'll give you glory and honor.

In Jesus' name.

Amen.

Amen.

So let's just expand our view just a little bit.

We got it right with some of those things and some you're like, well, I know some other

things.

That's awesome.

But let's just take a look.

Genesis chapter four, verse one says this.

Now Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain and said, I have I have acquired

a man from the Lord.

Then she bore again.

And this time his brother Abel.

Now Abel was a keeper of the sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in the process of time, it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit

of the ground to the Lord.

Abel also brought of the first fruit of his flock and of their fat.

And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but he did not respect Cain and his offering.

And Cain was very angry and his countenance fell.

Cain and Abel engage in a spiritual act of worship.

They're giving a sacrifice to God.

They're they're they're sacrificing something to the Lord and they bring it to the Lord.

They're offering up this sacrifice.

They're giving of their substance.

Right.

One was a keeper of the sheep or a kind of a farmer that takes care of the animals.

And one was a tiller of the ground.

They're both bringing increase of some kind of theirs.

They're both bring and sacrifice by nature.

You know, if you're going to talk about sacrifice, you're going to talk about an offering.

You're going to talk about giving.

Sacrifice implies that it's going to cost you something, right?

You can't sacrifice something and it not cost you something.

There's something there's cost involved in bringing a sacrifice to God.

There's a cost involved in bringing an offering to God.

There's a cost involved if you're offering something up to God, even worship.

There's a cost involved.

We can't.

They couldn't bring a sacrifice of any kind without costing something.

And by nature of the word, it means that I'm going to lose something to give it up, something

of value to give up to someone else.

So it's an idea.

I want you to even get a picture in your head.

If I'm sacrificing, it's taking something that I have and I'm giving it up.

Right.

I'm either giving it to a person.

I'm giving it to God.

I'm sacrificing.

But there's a cost.

It's going to cost me.

Now, if I was going to get my wife Dixie a birthday present and I should probably pay

something for that birthday present, she'd like, Amen.

It should cost me something.

Right.

It might be time.

It might be money.

It might be effort of some kind.

But if there's no cost, if there's no effort involved, there's really kind of no sacrifice.

Right.

And it's kind of a little value.

And you can think of it along the lines of this this way.

Right.

Her birthday rolls around.

It's a little surprise, baby.

All right.

February 14th comes and I haven't really got anything prepared.

And I got up in the morning and I think I'm going to get her a ring.

She needs a new ring.

She deserves a ring.

I should just get her a ring.

So I go into the cupboards.

I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do because it's the morning of her birthday.

And I find some loaves of bread.

And I'm thinking, you know, those bread twisties just might work out.

Right.

And I take the bread twisties off and I start braiding them together.

Now, I know there's a little creativity there.

Right.

But that's about it.

Right.

And I make this nice little ring out of a bread twisties.

And I say, honey, it's your birthday.

Here it is.

How many think that's going to be an acceptable sacrifice for my wife?

I'm thinking not so much.

She's going to be thinking exactly what you're thinking.

You forgot, didn't you?

Right.

But if I went out and I planned ahead and I got her a one, a two, a three carat ring,

a diamond of some kind, maybe some precious stone of some kind with a really nice cut,

set in a setting of silver or gold.

How many know that's a little bit of a sacrifice?

Amen.

I'm going to have to get something up to get to get all that.

Right.

And how many know she's going to respect that sacrifice?

Because it cost me something.

It costs right.

Two brothers bring an offering to the Lord.

Both of them bring something to God.

And it did cost both of them.

So here's what happens.

Cain brings the word of God says Cain brings the first fruit of his flock.

He brings the best.

He brings what is first in the firstborn.

If you brought a sacrifice, it had to be completely pure of defects.

Lamb that was pure of defects.

It was white, you know, and he would bring that lamb and it was a first fruit.

The word of God says that came right.

He just brings some fruit or grain.

It doesn't say anything about first fruits.

He doesn't say anything about a blood sacrifice.

It both it cost them both something.

But one of them, it costs more.

And one of them brought what was required because at this point in time with sacrifices,

if you want to make a sacrifice to God, it was a blood sacrifice.

It was an animal.

Now, Cain could have he could have taken some of his crops.

He could have sold him.

He could have traded for a firstborn and brought it.

But he didn't.

He didn't do what was required.

He didn't bring what was of value.

He didn't bring what was should cost something and meant something shedding of blood cost

something right.

Taking a life blood being spilled.

There's a cost in that there's a deep cost.

And it says Cain just grab some fruit or veggies, whatever he had and brought it for a sacrifice.

What am I saying?

True worship of God means that I bring an acceptable sacrifice to the Lord.

You got to bring what's acceptable, what's going to cost you something right.

And whatever form of worship you're doing, whether it's giving or or singing or whatever

you're doing, however you're worshiping God, it needs to be an acceptable form of worship.

I don't worship God in just any old way.

I don't just make it up as I go along.

Right.

I don't make my own definition of worship.

And what is what do I think worship looks like?

I don't just throw anything up to God any old way and say, here you go, God.

Right.

Whatever you know, and I think that looks a little bit like worship.

I don't come to God on my terms.

I come to God on his terms and what he says is worship.

What he says is acceptable worship.

Right.

Do you know what God sees when we just do things our way, when we just decide, well,

you know what?

I think is an acceptable form of worship.

I'm just going to go ahead and do this.

I didn't check anything out.

I was going to give God any old thing right in a worship style.

God sees arrogance.

He sees pride.

Right.

He sees rebellion and all that.

You know why I see it that way?

Because it is right.

We can't do that.

Cain gets it all wrong in his pride and arrogance.

He does.

He does it his way.

He does what he wants to do.

And God doesn't thrash Cain for it.

God doesn't get all judgmental on Cain.

And in fact, if you read verse six, God gently rebukes him.

So it says this.

So the Lord said to Cain, why are you so angry?

Why is your countenance falling?

If you do well, right, will you not be accepted?

Will you not be respected if you sacrifice properly?

And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door and desires and its desires for you.

But you should rule over it.

God brings this gentle rebuke on Cain.

He says, Cain, look, just go back and do it again.

Just do it well.

Just get it right.

Just do it my way.

Do what's acceptable in my sight.

Just go back and do that.

Worship starts with me doing what is acceptable in God's sight.

True worship starts.

It's not just singing and giving, but it's how I do something.

Right?

It's got to be acceptable in God's sight.

God's not looking for my interpretation on something or my, you know, He's not calling

me up and consulting with me on how my righteous sacrifice should look.

He's saying, listen, when you come to worship me, do it this way.

I want you to get this right.

Just like Cain, go back and do it again.

It needs to be an acceptable sacrifice in an acceptable manner.

And don't make it up.

Don't just figure it out on your own.

Don't just say, hey, I think this is worship to God.

Know what is worship to God.

Right?

I'm going to give you a little example of what I'm talking about.

And listen, I'm going to quote a country music song.

Please don't email me on Monday.

OK, I know there's country music fans out there and be like, you don't understand the

interpretation of the song.

I get it.

I get it.

But please don't email me.

But I think this song is a little bit exactly what I'm talking about.

When we're talking about an acceptable worship to God, I think this is kind of unacceptable.

And this song is called My Church.

I don't know some of you might have heard it.

All right.

It's a country song that's out there.

But let me just read you the let me just read you the lyrics to this.

I know there's country fans everywhere.

They're getting ready.

I'm going to get shot at on Monday.

All right.

But it says this in the lyrics.

Right.

It says I've cussed on a Sunday.

How many know that's not a good start?

I've cussed on a Sunday.

I've cheated and I've lied.

I've fallen down from grace a few too many times.

But I find my holy redemption when I put this car in drive, roll the windows up.

I roll the windows down and turn up the dial.

Can I get a hallelujah?

Can I get an amen?

Feels like the Holy Ghost running through you.

When I play the highway FM, I find my soul revival singing every single verse.

Yeah, I guess that's my church.

When Hank, how many know who Hank Williams is?

Right.

When Hank brings the sermon and cash that's Johnny cash.

Right.

Leads the choir.

I got a cold, cold heart burning hotter than a ring of fire.

I got to do a little twang with it.

And when it's when this wonderful world gets heavy, right, and I need to find my escape,

I just keep the wheels rolling radio scrolling till my sins wash away.

I don't know.

I don't think that's it.

Amen.

I don't think I would.

I don't think that's what God had in mind.

I don't think old Hank Williams and Johnny Cash died on a cross for any of us.

Right.

Listen, when we're going to come to God, we need to bring an acceptable sacrifice.

We need to bring something that is reverent and holy before God.

We need to how we worship God matters.

Right.

How we're going to do this.

Don't offer your interpretation or your opinion or something that you just conjured up in

your own mind and thought this is it.

Find out what God has to say and bring an acceptable form of worship before God.

Didn't got it wrong.

God didn't thrash him.

He just said, go back and get it right.

Cain didn't, by the way.

If you read the rest of the story, he got mad.

He got irritated.

He rebelled.

And matter of fact, he got so angry that it turned into fury and he killed his brother.

It's the first murder recorded in scripture.

Right.

Just engage in acceptable worship.

All right.

So what is acceptable worship?

Now, I'm just going to scratch the surface this morning, but I'm going to do that.

Hebrews 12 28 says this, Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be

shaken, let us have grace by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly

fear for our God is a consuming fire.

I want you to focus on that word serve that word serve in this passage in the original

Greek is actually a word for worship.

You can interchangeably put worship there.

It's used 21 times in the New Testament in this form of serve, but it actually means

to serve and to worship.

And if you look at another form of the word worship in the Greek, it's a now probably

going to butcher this a little bit because I'm not great with Greek.

Right.

But it's therapy, which is the English version for therapy, which actually means to heal.

All right.

So what acceptable worship means that when we serve God, we serve others.

Acceptable worship means that when we engage in serving God, we serve other people and

we bring a healing quality to that serve.

All right.

That's what it means.

Nine out of 10 people would never put in their definition.

Well how do you worship God?

Will I go serve people?

They might not ever put that in there.

Nine out of 10.

We'll talk about singing or something else.

But the word of God says when you go serve other people, right, when you serve God, you're

serving people and there's a healing element that comes along with that.

The reality when you serve is that the healing hand of God should be working through you.

When people I kind of picture it this way.

I kind of picture the heavenly hosts up in heaven.

Right.

All the angels may be gathered about and you're down there just serving away.

Well, you're not a church.

You just want to help somebody.

You want to serve somebody.

You want to encourage somebody.

And they're like, oh, yeah, there it is.

They're worshiping.

Right.

And look at the healing they're bringing.

Look at the healing they're bringing to somebody.

That's worshiping God.

Right.

You know, it's a crazy thought that went through my head.

What if we said that, you know, we got in a church service on Sunday morning and we

said it's time to worship and we all stood up to sing and raise our hands.

What if we just busted out and started ministering to one another?

What if we just broke out and started having a healing moment for somebody that's sitting

next to you and that could look like you just prayed for them.

Right.

It could just be a word of encouragement that you give.

It's a scripture that might you you might hand over to them and say, listen, man, I

was praying here.

God just gave me a scripture verse that might just speak to you.

What if it was that?

Right.

Because that is that's worship.

What if somebody was lonely and you want to visit them and you brought healing, right.

Companionship in somebody's life.

Right.

What if somebody needed their couch taken from upstairs to downstairs and they didn't

have anybody else to help them?

How many know that's a healing moment?

Amen.

You might need some healing if you tried by yourself.

Right.

I've done that already.

You and the couch end up at the bottom.

Right.

In a not so good position.

You know, but it's a healing.

It's serving God.

Well, you know, worship going up that goes up to heaven is when you serve God and you

do it with the right heart.

You do it with the right attitude.

You come in.

You know, you're not complaining the whole way there.

You're like, man, I got to take time out of my day.

You're just worshiping God.

It's a little bit like mimicking Jesus.

And Zach, I heard him say it this morning.

Talking about a child mimicking.

Right.

It's mimicking Jesus.

This is what Jesus did.

We're supposed to be Christians.

Christians mean one of the meanings of Christian was little Christ.

All right.

We're just supposed to be a little dose, you know, and a little child that follows a parent

around.

And Zach, you were saying it and they mimic their parents and they do, you know, if you

walk, they walk.

Right.

If you sing, they sing.

If you lift up your hand, I see this all the time in church.

You lift up your hand.

They lift up their hand.

Right.

You say a certain phrase.

They say certain phrase.

Be careful what you say, by the way.

All right.

They because they go to kids church and repeat it, whatever it is.

All right.

It's true.

All right.

But when we mimic Jesus, we worship God because we're serving like he serves.

It's acceptable worship.

And we bring service and we bring healing to people.

First John 2 6 says this.

Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Why?

Because it's worship.

Because heaven notices when you do this.

Last thing I'm going to give you today.

Acceptable worship is reverent worship.

Say reverent.

It's reverent worship.

OK.

Speak to somebody beside you.

Shake them a little.

Say, hey, it's reverent worship.

Come on, shake them up.

Somebody shake up.

All right.

It's reverent worship.

Any form of worship is not acceptable to God if reverence does not accompany that worship.

And reverence is this.

Reverence is if you're going to reverently worship God, there's got to be honor that's

involved with that.

You got to give honor.

You got to have adoration for God.

One of the terms that's used in that is homage.

And homage is a word that's used in a public setting.

It's giving honor in public.

It's recognizing God in public.

That's a form of worship.

When you praise God in public in some kind of way, just saying a word about Jesus in

public, that's homage.

It's honor, adoration, and homage.

As a matter of fact, Jesus said, if you are ashamed of me in front of men, he said, I'll

be ashamed of you one day in front of my father.

That's what he said of you.

Come on.

It is really just honoring God.

And acceptable worship requires reverent worship.

It requires that I honor God.

It requires that I give adoration to God.

It requires that I'm willing to give homage to God publicly.

Honor.

Say honor.

Adoration.

Adoration.

Say adoration.

Homage.

Say homage.

A word we don't use very often, right?

Reverence accompanies my worship if he is my Lord, if he's my God, my Savior, right?

If it's personal, if he's my Jesus, not just Jesus, but he's my Jesus.

You ever hear anybody say that?

Well, that's just my Jesus.

Come on.

That's personal.

That's just how my Jesus does.

That's just how my Jesus works.

That's just who he is, right?

Listen, reverence accompanies worship when Jesus is first place in my life.

He really does.

When he's my shelter, and not just a shelter, not just a fortress, but he's my shelter.

He's my fortress.

He's my provision, right?

He's my future.

He's my God, right?

And he's the one I trust in.

When it's personal.

When it's reverent.

That's when you get adoration.

Not just that he is God, but he's your God.

It's got to be reverence.

When I sing to him, there has to be reverence.

There's got to be adoration involved.

That's why we throw our hands up sometimes and throw our head back.

Some of you tear up when you're singing.

It's because you got adoration for God.

You understand he's your God.

You remember back to what he did, right?

I remember when I used to...

How many of you know it's not about how good your voice is?

Thank God, right?

It's not how good our voice is.

It really isn't.

I used to stand beside a teenager in church.

He had the worst voice I ever heard in my life.

He couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if somebody handed him a bucket and stuck the tune in

it.

It was awful.

But he was one of the greatest worshipers I've ever seen.

He would worship God with everything that was in it.

He'd throw everybody off who was hanging around him because he was so bad.

But man, he loved God.

And he adored God.

And he sang like it.

He lived like it.

You didn't make any mistake when you watched him worship.

Whatever we're doing, there's got to be this reverence for God.

We come in and say, listen, if you're not going to give God reverence, then be quiet.

God isn't okay with you just getting up and going, here you go.

Everything I need.

Everything I need.

My father has it.

He doesn't need that.

Don't even bother.

Right?

Don't even bother.

I wouldn't even go there before God.

But if you're going to get up and adore him, if you're going to sing to him, you're going

to speak to him, if he's your God, that's how you sing.

Amen?

I'm going to ask if you'd stay in this morning.

The worst of the teams coming.

I want to read you Psalms 91 and one.

They're going to put it up and I'm going to read it in a personal form.

Now I'm not trying to twist the word of God.

I'm just going to change it.

Read this in a personal form because you need to hear this because Psalms 91 starts off

those who live.

But I must say this.

When I live in the shelter of the most high, I will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

This I declare about my Lord.

He alone is my refuge, my place of safety.

He is my God and I trust him for he rescues me from every trap and protects me from deadly

disease.

He will cover me with his feathers.

He will shelter me with his wings.

His faithful promises are my armor and protection.

I will not be afraid of the terrors of night nor the arrows that fly by day.

I will not dread the disease that stalks in the darkness nor the disaster that strikes

at midday.

Though a thousand fall at my side, though ten thousand are dying around me, these evils

will not touch me.

Just open my eyes and see how the wicked are punished.

It's worship.

When he's your God.

When there's reverence involved.

It's got to be reverent.

It's got to be reverent.

We're getting ready to take communion right now.

And a couple things with communion.

Communion is a reverent thing.

It's about adoring our Savior.

This is about deep adoration for who He is.

It's about homage.

We do this in a public setting here.

It's about homage before God.

And we need to prepare a heart set.

And if you're here this morning or even if you're listening online and you can prepare

communion right where you're at online, you might want to go get the bread and the juice.

But here's the deal.

The Word of God says very clearly, and particularly in 1 Corinthians 11, it says don't do this

in an unworthy manner.

Make sure you do this in a reverent manner.

Make sure that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

If not, hold off in taking communion because this is for those who are following Christ.

And I'm going to ask you to bow your heads and just examine your hearts right now.

And while you do that, if you're listening here and you want to take communion but you're

not sure Jesus is Lord and Savior of life or if you're listening online this morning

and you're not sure Jesus is Lord, He can be.

The Word of God is super clear on this.

You just got to, and this isn't an emotional decision, this is a decision that I'm going

to follow Christ.

That He is going to be my Lord.

He's going to be my Savior.

He's going to lead my, I'm going to follow His direction.

I'm not going to make up my own worship.

I'm going to do it His way.

If that's you this morning and you want Jesus as Lord and Savior, you can.

Prayer of salvation.

Father, we thank you today.

God, you know who needs you this morning.

God, you know God the one that wants to make you their God.

And Lord, we recognize that Jesus died for our sins.

He came to wash us clean of our sin.

He took our place on the cross and He became that substitution.

And the only way we can be righteous is through Jesus.

So today, God, we ask for forgiveness of our sins.

God, we ask you to come into our lives.

And God, we commit today to follow you fully.

What your word says, how you say to live, what you say to do, I will follow you.

And I thank you Lord today in my heart and in my life because I look for you today in

Jesus' name.

I want to be saved.

I want to be born again.

I want to go from death to life.

I want the promise of heaven one day.

And I want to avoid hell in my life.
