Silly Substitutes - Bro Jeremy Howell 11-15-2023

Turn to the book of Verse Samuel, chapter number fifteen. Mad, direct

your attention to the twenty second and the twenty third at verse All right,

Brother Nathaniel, Saint Luke's Gospel eleven Versus number eleven through thirteen. Brother Jesse

Matthew, Chapter number seven, Versus number twenty one through twenty three. Again,

our text, our golden text, will be Verse Samuel, chapter number

fifteen, and Mad, direct your attention to verses twenty two and twenty three.

Brother Nathaniel, will you read that if a son shall ask bread of

any of you that is a father, will he give him a stroll?

Or if he asks a fish, will he for a fish give him a

serpent? Or if he shall ask him agg will he offer him a scorpion?

If ye, then, being E will know how to get good gifts

into your children? How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit

to give to ask Praise the Lord. I want to preach a message the

Holy Ghost title silly substitutes, Silly substitutes, Brother Jesse Matthew, Chapter number

seven, Verses number twenty one through twenty three. Everyone that saith unto me,

Lord Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven. But he didn't

do with the will of my father, which is in heaven. Meaning will

say to me in that day, Lord Lord, have we not prophesied in

thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils, and in thy

name done many wonderful words? And then will I profess up to them?

I never knew you. Depart from me he that work iniquity. There is

no doubt in my mind that the Lord had given them instruction concerning some certain

thing, that they had substituted what they should do for something else. Let's

stand for the reading of our texts. Tony verse Sampuel chapter number fifteen,

Versus number twenty two and twenty three read, and the Bible says, and

Samuel said, hath the Lord as great the light in burnt offerings and sacrifices,

as in obeying the voice of the Lord. Behold, to obey is

better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rems. For rebellion

is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.

Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee

from being king, I want to point out to you something that the Lord

brought to my attention. After that the Holy Ghost had whispered the title for

tonight's sermon into my heart. The title is silly substitutes, because Saul substituted

obedience for sacrifice. The Lord's substituted Saul with davy. Let's pray, Heavenly

Father, we thank you for the opportunity to be in the house thanks to

the Lord. I pray that you would anoint this thy servant, set a

guard at my mouth, and help me to say only those things that you

would happy to say, nothing more and less. Anoint the ears of this

thy people, that they might hear what it is. The Spirit saith unto

the churches through this blessed word of God, through the preach word, not

through my words, but by Thy words. I pray, let these sayings

go below the shoulders. God, I pray, let them go below the

shoulders that um get in that heart and soul and the spirit. Let them

also be in the mind. I pray, may we not be hearers only,

but doers. We don't want to deceive ourselves. I thank you for

the privilege to be in this house together tonight with people of light precious faith,

and maybe to part this blessed joyfully and not sorrowfully. In Jesus' name

in the church, said hey man again, silly substitutes. Our text is

found in an old test book of the Holy Bible. The Book of First

Samuel was a favorite of mine when I was a child, between the ages

of nine and thirteen. And I remember that time period of my life very

well because great and strong conviction had gripped upon my soul at that age,

between the ages of nine and thirteen. At that time of my life,

great and strong conviction had gripped my soul. I remember, at the age

of ten one time, going into my bedroom after a Sunday morning service and

opening my Bible to this Book of First Samuel, and I began to thumb

through it. Chapter after chapter. I looked at and turned the page as

I sat in my bedroom floor, all alone, with my bedroom door closed

on a Sunday afternoon, while the rest of the family was taking a nap.

For our father always made sure that we took nap on Sunday afternoon so

that he would be able to get a napped himself. And he pulled our

bedroom doors closed to make sure that we didn't make a great escape. And

may I add this that our father did not want us substituting nap time with

any other thing, any extracurricular activity would have been unacceptable. But I know

that my earthly father would not have had a problem with the fact that I

substituted nap time for reading the Word of God. And while I was thumbing

through this precious book of the Bible, my life was forever changed. I

remember coming to a certain chapter in this book of the Bible, the Spirit

of God descended upon me for the first time. And I remember preaching and

the anoringing coming upon me mightily, and I did not fully understand understand what

it meant, but I knew that God was going to use me to pre

the Gospel some years later. How many of you tonight are familiar with the

presence of the Lord. How many of you are familiar with what we call

the descension of the Holy Ghost down upon us at random time, sometimes while

we're working at the house, or working in the job, or working in

the yard. The Spirit of God will quicken these mortal bodies and we will

just feel energized or rejuvenated, and just feel like praising the Lord or witnessing

to someone about the goodness of the Lord. And perhaps our feet will get

to tapping, and we'll swat our hands up against our laugh and sing a

song and get happy in Jesus. I remember feeling strong emotion as I was

happy in Jesus, and I did not foolly understand exactly what the Lord was

doing in my life. But I would say that David had a simil happening

whenever he was out in his father's still tending to the sheep of his father.

There was no doubt that there were times, by divine appointment that David

was visited by the spirit of the Lord. In fact, it had to

be the spirit of God that equipped him with a power that was able to

subdue the lion and the bear. It had to be the spirit of God

that would inspire him to write the songs that he played, also to help

him find time to play skillfully upon that hard while keeping track of the sheep.

You know, as a pastor, I know sometimes trying to keep after

the sheep while at the same time worshiping and praised in the Lord and maintaining

a Bible reading plan and praying. You know, sometimes we just get so

busy. But David, no doubt, had been divinely helped of the Lord.

In fact, numerous of the Psalmists they noted that their help cometh from

the Lord. Do not know how we as Christians and believers do the things

that we do. My understanding of this is it has to be the strengthening

of His power in us. It has to be the power of God working

in our inner man. Sometimes I look back at my life when I say,

how did this happen? How could this have taken place? And then

I just have to hang my head and say words of praise that, truly,

if it had not been for the Lord, that would not have been

possible. But I thank the Lord for his goodness and for his mercy.

As a young child, at the age of ten, I remember there were

three prominent characters in this particular book of the Bible that stood out to me.

The name of those characters are Samuel, Saul, and David. To

me, they were very fascinating characters. At that time of my life.

There were some he that a lot of the children looked up to, and

they were not even real It does not matter to me. If your hero

is fictional or non fictional, you need to figure out who your heroes are,

and I believe they ought to be real people. I know that there

are people that we consider our heroes, their law enforcement officers, they're firefighters,

emt texts, doctors, lawyers, people in society that have really been

a blessing to humanity as a whole, and we call them our heroes.

There's some of you that have looked at characters in stories such as Adventures and

Odyssey and followed series and you've said, Harlow Dahl or Eugene Melschner or somebody

like that is your hero. But I found as a child that my hero

were the characters of this Bible, this blessed book of the Bible. And

there were some that I just felt like I should pattern my life after.

As I would do character studies and study their lifestyles and their manner of life

and their attitude and their behavior, I would see that it would change me

because I so desperately wanted to become like these fascinating characters of the Bible.

Teachers I remember sitting in Sunday school and listening to the teacher speak of these

men, and I would lose myself in the land of their nativity. I

would feel as though I was standing there with these men as they experience the

Lord in ways that most people would never experience him. And I remember putting

myself in their place and saying, God, I would love to be a

substitute and be in their place and feel you the way they have felt you.

I would love to be safsent and experience the anointing as such a great

measure as this. I would love to be a giant slayer like David.

I would love to be a beloved king like King Saul. And I realized

that these men experienced the Lord and his anointing and his gifts and his ability

in ways that no other people had experienced him. And so one of the

things that stood out to me the most was that God substituted Saul with this

precious man David. In other words, God displaced Saul and replaced him with

David. This king of Israel was replaced. I heard a preacher many years

ago say, you are never too tall to fall. And we read that

God had appointed this man Saul to be king over Israel, that Israelites had

not chosen him to be their king because of his physical stature or appearance.

They certainly approved and offered words of affirmation regarding his exceptional physical stature and abilities.

But they are not the one that appointed King Saul over the nation of

Israel. Could a church say amen? In fact, it was the Lord

that assigned King Saul to lead or govern his people. So David becomes king

over Israel in the place of Saul. Eventually, why what happened to Saul?

We will remember that David more and the loss of his best friend Jonathan,

who was the son of King Saul. David also mourned the loss of

King Saul himself. And with these words, David said, how had the

mighty fallen? He talked about them being so swift when they ran. He

talked about them being so powerful their physical Paceit must have been something that was

so admirable. Men respected them because of their nature ability. When he thought

about the ability of Jonathan, when he took the bowl and put an arrow

in the other hand, and put that arrow to the bow, and pulled

on that arrow and the stream and released it, how that arrow hit its

mark? And David told the people of God, we need to learn the

use of the bow. In other words, David was saying, we need

to learn how to better strike our enemy at a distance before it is standing

nose to nose and toe to toe with us. And so I feel like

the people of God sometimes deal with certain circumstances and situations in their life because

they refused to use the bow of prayer and take down their enemy and advance

before their enemy comes knocking on the door of their spiritual houses. There's a

lot of preaching in that right there. I was up this morning. I

speak as a fool, and I am not boasting, but about three o'clock

this morning, the spirit of God, they'll put me to pray. And

from about three am until five am I moaned and grown in the spirit.

I spent over an hour in the floor, and I felt like it was

urgent that I pray. And you know what, just a couple hours after

I got up from prayer, I had sent a text to Brother Jonathan and

I said, be careful on the way to work today, be alert and

watch and pray and be safe. It wasn't but about an hour after I

sent that warning, he sent a text message and said, Pastor, I've

just had an accident, but don't be concerned because God undertook in that situation,

and I'm okay. There was minimal damage to my vehicle and no bodily

harm. Now, I want you to know if we had not a fault

that battle three or for hours prior and used the gold and struct our enemy

before it advanced on a crime scene or before it had the advantage, what

would of the outcome have been. I know the Holy Ghost has been warning

us and telling us to seek the Lord while he may be found. To

me, that means there's coming a time when it will be hard, if

not impossible, to find him if you do not seek him. Now it

seems to me like God is saying, you better get some oil in your

lamps while there is or to be gotten, while the houses of worship are

praising the Lord, while the oil is flowing in my house. You need

to get while the gift is good. Saul had some sort of attitude issue,

yet a heart problem. If you were to look at him spiritually,

and from that spiritual perspective that you would say it was a heart issue.

The golden text that we're looking at to Mike gives us the reason for this

terrible problem in the life of Saul. In fact, it says that stubbornness

is one of the symptoms of the problem of Saul. This is why Saul

needs to be replaced with David. We look at this idolatry that is considered

to be a practice of King Saul. For the Jessey, the stubbornness is

as iniquity. We see all of this and we say, God in Heaven,

could there be any of that in my life. I want to remind

you that Saul was the anointed of the Lord. He knew what it was

like for that oil to be poured on his head and to run from the

top of his head to the soul of his feet. He knew what it

was like to be slaying in the spirit and to be prop besigned. You

know, there came time when the Holy Ghost would not anort him to do

the duties of a priest or a prophet because of what had developed inside of

his heart. I feel like the Holy ghosts dealt with me in the early

morning hours regard your symptoms, and I feel like God spoke to me.

The title of this message sillly substitutes what only substitute and seeking him forward.

I feel like there's a lot of people today they substitute gathering in the local

assembly of participating in the worship at that appointed place because of want to do

something else. The Bible said that there would be a generation that were lovers

of pleasure more than lovers of God. I know there's a lot of substitution

going on. I know that Jesus himself substituted for us when he shoved us

out of the way because there was a penalty, persent and God demand of

justice and payment. And Jesus sucked us out of the way and said,

I will be that substitutionary sacrifice, that I will die in the place of

every person ever live it humanity, both pastor present and future. I know

that the blood of the bulls and the goats was not substitution enough. It's

the silly substitution, if you will. It worked for the time being,

but we know that the blood of dogs and goats and Ramson was not enough.

But thank God tonight for the substitutionary sacrifice in that substitution that led Jesus

postition his precious blood for the sins of the world. Come on, now,

you know that that sacrifice was one that the heaven and they're accepted that

when Jesus descended from the tomb of Joseph of Arimathiam, that he had in

his hand a bull her basing pool of blood that was full of God's blood,

blood that had been droved for the manuals beings. God shook his head

up and down, and he said, it is enough. And I thank

God tonight that we do not have to sacripossa in blood the Lord of bulls

and goats and ma'ams. Tonight, that's a good substitution. Wouldn't you say

that that is not a silly substitution, that's a serious substitution. What of

God approved of that? I want to ask you tonight, what is it

that you are substituting for what God has told you to do? If you

want to stepped back and take, as I preach tonight, even a realizer,

just how silly it is, soul. It's very silly for you to

reject the Lord, and it's really silly for you to substitute to doing what

you're supposed to do with something else. But the ever before used to sing

a song, why don't you do what God told you to do. Like

is that that people and brother offer God such silly substitution rather than dooley exactly

what the Lord has a sign for them to do. Saul's rejection by the

Lord is something most hope to never experience for themselves. I wanted to experience

what it was like to live the like of Keating. I want to experience

want to know what it's like and how it feels to shout under the presence

of the Almighty God. There is no substitut for it. There's no counterfeit

satisfied that with a substitute. I said, there's satisfied that with substituting watching

God has gonna be for them with something else. That's why we've got so

many charismatic churches today. They are not Bible believing people. They do not

believe it what the Word of God says, then, whether substitute this emless

translation time the King James burns and Bible with some other bad I'm not interested.

There's so instituting this Bible with something over there. What I feel like

is the Body inspired her, and that I'm in translating for the English speaking

people. I feel like I'm preach it to ape you here tonight. Why

would I preach if I must not preaching to somebody. I'm not gonna beat

the air. I'm not gonna substitute her. It's the truth for something that

would make her a shouter when God says he didn't run ware time, Charles's

substitute the good sweet holy ghost. There's nothing in a glass bottle or a

peal bottle that will ever substitute for the good sweet generally ghost. There's a

lot of people today in condition and circumstances because her of what they substituted her

for what God had designed for them. They substitute the church for pleasure in

the lake. They substituted reading their Bibles for reading the Bassainer magazine. They

substitute raising their children up in the house of Cognate for little leaguer and taken

into the hold and out of left when they should have walked there in the

church and come on down. Silly substitutes for what God in then for his

people. And so because Saul rejected the Lord, he experiences something he probably

thought he would never ever experience. The Lord substituted Saul for David. When

I think of the meaning of something being substituted, I think of this to

use something or someone instead of another thing or a person. First, let

me serve notice to our preachers and let you know that if you're going to

live a lifestyle of Sein and then God can definitely put somebody in your place

or get your stead to do whatever it is God has caused you to do.

You see, the Lord used day instead of in the place of Saul.

The one who was displaced was replaced. And it seems the Lord exchange

Saul for David as easily as somebody changes something at Walmart for something else.

If you look at our text, you'll see the Bible said, and Samuel

said, have the Lord has creeped a light in burnt offerings and sacrifice as

in of being the Lord? How about it? What's the answer to that

question? Can you substitute to the sacrificial ram or a sacrificial officer? Where

offering a sacrificer for simple obedience? Unto the Lord you he goes on the

same behold, to obey is better than sacrificer, and the hearken than the

power of remsoer. For rebellion is as the sin of witchchrift? What his

solve's problem? Reverion? How did he end up eating his loster meal out

the witch's house? How did he end up telling it be not the house

of Samuel? Instead he substituted not please say for the house of our witch?

Or come on now, I'm telling you you rather the peace and old

the word of God. He's substituted it or treated it for a deal at

the witch up in burst house. That come on now, if you continue

to rebel and be stunning to what God said, not be surpised when you

eat your lost b b that wit rebellion. Rebellion does not need to be

defined. We know the definition of the word rebellion. It's as witchcraft,

according to Almighty God and the Great Prophet, saying, Saul has a clearer

understanding of the consequences of committee at those trespasses against the Lord. It goes

on to say, stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. And we find out

that the Lord interpreted as this you have projected me, and because you decided

to substitute me and my will for you and your will. God thumbs just

those up at Saul. It says, what we reading this, Leord,

I'm gonna have the last saved that I'm gonna have the last laugh that he

just pulls the ejection button that's right there behind the throat a king saw,

and like a fire pilot, quickly evacuates the seat of his command, and

he's sitting in immediately caught hits her the eject and saw is evacuating her from

that position of power, that position of authority, or that position of influence.

a life and continue leading. He calls her of his rebellion, the stubbornness,

see where he made a habit in this. You don't see just where he

was bent towards this. In fact, as you study his life, you

see this guy was seleus to do something for the Lord and his people.

There's something inside of him change. I'm talking to somebody tonight. Just's got

spiritual heart issues. You have authority issues, and your children are suffering right

now because when God tells you to do something, you go up with spokescreen

and you substitute what God told you to do through Samuel or to the prophet,

to the preacher, or to the Word of God, and you do

it the way you want to do a little bit, can I tell you

so? The only way you ascended to that position of power. Is because

the spirit of God that moved on Samuel, that said Samuelah, that God,

would you wos that God you Samuel to a nought you. Everything we're

doing, we're doing for God by his grace, according to his legal It's

not about all doing. It's not according to our all design were all pleasure.

Was simply doing it take to please the Lord. So wait a minute,

he's rejected from being king. It doesn't matter how many battles he fights.

At this point, he's not gonna be king. It doesn't matter how

hard he praise. At this point, he's not gonna get a prayer.

Three. I do believe that there was a point that he could have prayed

and said, please, Samuel, beseech the Lord for me. I believe

he could have humbled himself and prayed, and he could have been restored,

and this substitution could have took place in a peaceful manner, and it would

not have had to have been ripped from Saul, no matter how hard he

had a grip on it, no matter how hard he didn't want to turn

loose of it. You can say I will never turn looser on my Lord.

I'll never turn loose on my church. I'll never turned loose on my

I'll never turn me my Salvason. You be sorry when you come to realiza

that you wouldn't got nothing to do with it. It's only bies goodness and

thus clicer and thius mercy that we are here tonight. It's only guy's goodness.

It was more than arrogancy and pride and selfishness that had saw a lot

of times we hear preachers preach about King Saul and they say pride was the

issue. Pride was the issue. But the answer is right here in the

text, as diagnosed by God and Samuel. It's stubbornness. That's when the

rest of the church is gonna go over here. I'm gonna sub to do

something, and I'm gonna go over there, and I'm gonna make a personal

altar under my God rather than cooperator. They can't prepare the trench cost for

a warrior to go with him and help him in his endeavor to fight God's

it ourself. I said. The church environment was creating in order to keep

ourself from doing it ourself. Come on, now, how many people taking

Who called you to hear from God more than I do? Who calls you

to dictate to me what God has spoken from me in my house to do?

God told Moses to speak to the children of Israel, that they put

I'm telling you, when God speaks, he gives the specifics and the

details of on purpose or come on now, I'm telling you the Lord substitute.

that we always got an English Honors class, and I think her name was

Ms. Pete Walker or something like that, Sister Howell, and she would

say that every single time she feeled in and she said, what did y'all

learn yesterday? Y'all know you want to tell me? Do you want to

rehash over it? Do you want to tell me about it? If somebody

want to spend the next time thirty minutes about it. We say no,

we don't want to relive yesterday's lesson, and we don't want to reveals in

it. We don't want to relearn. And we learned everything, and we

would sit there and play. Because the principle of the school had no serious

substitution for a teacher in that put your class in that age grouper. So

sometimes he throw a pe coach in there. Sometimes he turned somebody else in

And know what's nothing at all they could do about it. Oh, come

completely off target. I know that Saul was doing things that seemed to be

the right things to do, and he was doing things that were reasonable and

sensible, but he wasn't even on the target, much less on the bull's

eye. And so God said, I'm gonna use David instead the place of

Saul. Now, I don't want that to happen to anybody in this building

tonight. Does isn'tbody want to it? Spirits that I don't. It appears

to me that the Lord was offended by the disobedience of Saul. The Lord

to surely displeased when Saul decided to substitute what he was supposed to do for

what the Lord had told him to do. You know, sometimes we have

to do what God told us to do even though it does not make sense.

Ask Abraham about it. There would be no substitution regarding the life provison.

You've got to obey God even when it does not make sense. Is

anybody but I'm ken even hear the line I'm creature gold? Surely substitutions.

You can take eyes of her to mounting, and you can try to pull

a trick of mirrors and smoke and try to convince God. Then, because

Isaac could have been a servant boy, it could have been around, it

But what is it that keeps you from advancing spiritually? What is it

that keeps you from growing in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and

the Savior Jesus Christ. The worthless things that Saul discarded and destroyed could be

lacking unto abortion and gambling and burglary. But what isn't that so special to

you, survaluable to you that you would hide it in your temploy acre,

But you would take it back to your house and hide it from saying your

saul. I heard the sheep between three am and five am this morning.

a god. There is nothing funny all about being stubborn. There's nothing you're
