  2. Good morning.

  3. Ain't God good?

  4. Good to be with you. I am not Pastor

  5. Ben.

  6. And Pastor Ben has had a kind of rough

  7. week. He fell out twice from what I

  8. understand. Back just completely gave

  9. out on him and couldn't get up. And so

  10. he went to the hospital twice, was

  11. admitted once. Oh, just once. Um, but

  12. they kept him, did MRIs and CAT scans

  13. and all that they do. And he's laying

  14. low today because he's hurting and he

  15. has a follow-up appointment on Wednesday

  16. uh to see what they're going to do with

  17. him. So, would you keep him in prayer?

  18. And, you know, I I was thinking too as

  19. he then texted me on Friday and he's

  20. like, "Man, can you cover the pulpit?"

  21. And I said, "Absolutely." And so, I went

  22. into prayer shortly after. And when I

  23. got up from prayer, I felt like I got

  24. hit by a Mac truck just that quick. Um,

  25. I was freezing, which I never get

  26. fevers, but I had a fever and all my

  27. muscles hurt and I was like, "Oh no." I

  28. was like, "I can't preach like this."

  29. And so I slept and slept and slept and

  30. God must have touched me because inside

  31. of 24 hours, I feel like I was 95% back.

  32. And I say all that to say I feel like

  33. God wants to make sure that somebody

  34. gets you a word today. So we're going to

  35. endeavor to do that. We're starting a

  36. new series today called Hearts Smart.

  37. And so this is a message from the heart

  38. to the heart and about the heart. And I

  39. want to start and kick off this series

  40. with a passage in Revelation 2:es 1-7.

  41. And I've entitled it First Things First.

  42. And so we're just going to journey

  43. through this passage of scripture, see

  44. what the Lord would say to us, and leave

  45. a little richer than when we came in.

  46. Does that sound like a good plan? So in

  47. Revelation 2:1,

    Revelation 2:1

  48. it says to the angel of the church of

  49. Ephesus, "Write

  50. these things, says he who holds the

  51. seven stars in his right hand, who walks

  52. in the midst of the seven golden

  53. lampstands." I want to pause long enough

  54. to tell you this is uh what we call the

  55. tour of churches in Revelation chapter 2

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  56. and 3. There were seven churches in Asia

  57. Minor that are about to be addressed.

  58. Ephesus being the first. But I want to

  59. note that the letter was actually

  60. written to the angel of the church of

  61. Ephesus. And the angel that means

  62. messenger. And what we're talking about

  63. is human leaders. We're talking about

  64. the leadership. So really, you're

  65. reading the mail of the pastor of the

  66. church of Ephesus. And we know who's

  67. writing the letter or who's uh saying

  68. these things because it's he who holds

  69. the seven stars also the leaders of the

  70. church churches in his right hand. And

  71. he walks in the midst of the seven

  72. golden lampstands. These are the seven

  73. churches of Asia Minor. golden meaning

  74. there's great value to the church and

  75. lampstand stands meaning that these

  76. churches illuminate a dark world around

  77. them and so we see Jesus walking in the

  78. middle of the churches and inspecting

  79. them if you will

  80. talk about in our culture checking out a

  81. church

  82. is checking out our church as well and

  83. he walks through and you know I know

  84. that Jesus came born of a virgin and he

  85. became the lamb of God and took away the

  86. sin of the world, was nailed to an old

  87. rugged cross, buried and on the third

  88. day rose again and is seated at the

  89. right hand of the father. But apparently

  90. he gets up now and then and walks

  91. through the midst of the churches

  92. and checks us out. And so this is the

  93. context of what we're about to read. And

  94. we continue on in verse three and it

  95. says, "Oh, I'm sorry, verse two." I know

  96. your works, your labor, your patience,

  97. and that you cannot bear those who are

  98. evil. And you have tested those who say

  99. their apostles and are not, and have

  100. found them liars.

  101. And you have persevered, and have

  102. patience, and have labored for my name's

  103. sake, and have not become weary.

  104. Nevertheless,

  105. I have this against you

  106. that you have left your first love.

  107. Remember, therefore, from where you have

  108. fallen. Repent and do the first works,

  109. or else I will come to you quickly, and

  110. remove your lampstand from its place,

  111. unless you repent. But this you have,

  112. that you hate the deeds of the

  113. niclatians, which I also hate. He who

  114. has an ear, let him hear what the spirit

  115. says.

  116. Notice, not to the pastor, not to the

  117. church of Ephesus, to the churches.

  118. To him who overcomes,

  119. I will give to eat from the tree of life

  120. which is in the midst of the paradise of

  121. God. Jesus is using a strategy, if you

  122. will, that is known in the business

  123. world. You may have heard the term or

  124. one like it, a correction sandwich,

  125. where you begin with something

  126. encouraging and soft and affirming

  127. and that's like the bread of the

  128. sandwich and then the meat is the

  129. corrective piece.

  130. And then you polish it off with another

  131. slice of bread, another encouragement,

  132. an endorsement, an affirmation.

  133. Good business people know this. They

  134. know how to do this because none of us

  135. like to be corrected.

  136. >> Don't act like you do.

  137. >> You're not that holy. Something in us

  138. rises up when somebody tries to correct

  139. us and confront us. And so this strategy

  140. that is used in business often was used

  141. by Jesus. He starts by telling the

  142. church all the good things that they're

  143. doing. He's like, "I know you. I know

  144. your works, your labor, your patience,

  145. your perseverance.

  146. You're doing great things and you

  147. haven't given up. That alone is a huge

  148. commendation because so many that come

  149. to the faith don't last.

  150. So many are so shallow in the faith that

  151. one little wind of persecution or

  152. trouble comes along and they're out.

  153. But this church had hung in there.

  154. They were they were standing firm and

  155. they were confronting evil. They weren't

  156. okay with sin

  157. and God commends them for that. But

  158. there's something that they had slipped

  159. on.

  160. They had left their first love. First

  161. things first,

  162. love God.

  163. I like when things are boiled down to

  164. their essence.

  165. I'm not a person who has the attention

  166. span for a lot of details.

  167. Where's my ADT? Add AD. ADHD. ADT is a

  168. security company. ADHD. See what I'm

  169. saying?

  170. Where's my homies at? I I don't have the

  171. attention span for a lot of details. I

  172. need it simple. I need it I need it

  173. boiled down. And one day they asked

  174. Jesus, "Which is the most important of

  175. all the commandments?"

  176. And he quotes from Deuteronomy 6:4 and5

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  177. and another portion in Leviticus. And he

  178. says, "Here, O Israel,

  179. the Lord our God is one.

  180. You shall love the Lord your God with

  181. all your heart,

  182. all your soul, all your mind, and all

  183. your strength.

  184. The second is like it. Love your

  185. neighbor as yourself." And he said, "On

  186. these two hang all the prophets,

  187. all the law,

  188. all the poetic books, all the historical

  189. books, all the prophetic books, all the

  190. epistles, all of it boils down to these

  191. two things.

  192. Love God

  193. and love people.

  194. But not just love God

  195. shallowly or

  196. with no depth. Love him with all your

  197. heart,

  198. all your soul, your emotions, all your

  199. mind, your intellect, all your strength,

  200. your physical being. When you don't feel

  201. like it and you're tired and you're

  202. weary, love him like that.

  203. And they had lost this. They had had it

  204. once because 30 years before Paul had

  205. written a letter to the church of

  206. Ephesus. And in chapter 1:15, you'll see

  207. that he said, "I've heard of your faith

  208. and your love for all the brethren.

  209. They were known for it."

  210. And when you love the brethren and you

  211. love the people,

  212. it is indicative of somebody who loves

  213. God because some people aren't that

  214. lovable

  215. and you can't love them without the love

  216. of God.

  217. And he said, "I've heard about your

  218. love. you had it and you you've kept

  219. doing the church thing and there's a lot

  220. of things you're doing right

  221. but let's look at that one thing that's

  222. hurting you and if we don't deal with it

  223. he said your lampstand will be removed

  224. it's not

  225. that the lampstand would be destroyed

  226. but it would lose its position its

  227. platform

  228. a church that is not fulfilling its

  229. mission

  230. will be removed.

  231. Why would God allow a church to continue

  232. even if they're speaking the truth

  233. if there's no love?

  234. And a lot of people are like that.

  235. I I know people that are super

  236. confrontative, like they want to rebuke

  237. everybody. They think that's a gift of

  238. the spirit or something.

  239. want to point out everybody's faults and

  240. tell everybody what they're doing wrong.

  241. They speak the truth many times, but is

  242. it motivated with love?

  243. And that's this church's dilemma.

  244. Maybe

  245. it's your dilemma.

  246. I don't know where you're at.

  247. I only know the journey I've been on.

  248. And if I'm honest,

  249. my relationship with God at times has

  250. been so deep, so beautiful, so rich. And

  251. at other times,

  252. it's

  253. kind of overshadowed by what I'm dealing

  254. with or what's right in front of me or

  255. circumstances.

  256. and my love has faded from time to time.

  257. It's like any relationship, you

  258. understand? Love has levels.

  259. You may have friends that you're close

  260. enough that when you hang up, you say,

  261. "Love you

  262. or co-workers or people in the church

  263. family and you mean it." But it's a

  264. certain level. But I I would say to you

  265. there's a difference between people that

  266. I say I love you to

  267. in that level. There's a difference

  268. between that and when I tell my wife I

  269. love her.

  270. It's a different level.

  271. It's a different level of intimacy and

  272. of commitment.

  273. And we had the wedding and the very

  274. expensive dress

  275. that her parents so graciously paid for.

  276. the rose petals and the flower girl and

  277. the music,

  278. the gathering and all the things that

  279. people do.

  280. You've heard the term young and in love.

  281. >> I would submit it's more like

  282. inexperienced and intoxicated.

  283. I've done quite a few weddings and I

  284. always look at them and think, you have

  285. no idea

  286. what you're about to do.

  287. and you try to counsel them through it.

  288. And they they teach us as counselors to

  289. look out for something called

  290. rosecolored glasses because sometimes

  291. they're they're so intoxicated with the

  292. person that they can't see it for what

  293. it really is. And and they can't imagine

  294. that there would ever come a time when

  295. that person would just about drive them

  296. nuts.

  297. There's levels.

  298. As I thought of this in human

  299. relationships, I was reminded of a time

  300. when my son, who had been weward and he

  301. was still a teenager and he had kind of

  302. been off doing his own thing and he came

  303. back to us and he got really sick,

  304. really, really sick.

  305. And I spent a few days with him in an

  306. empty apartment with no furniture.

  307. And he was feverish and basically

  308. sleeping the whole time and just

  309. miserable.

  310. And I would lay on the floor next to

  311. him.

  312. And every few minutes I would get up and

  313. take the washcloth on his head and give

  314. him a clean one that was under cool

  315. water and just try to bring the fever

  316. down, try to bring him some comfort. And

  317. it was motivated by love. I would have

  318. sat there for weeks.

  319. It was just easy to love because that's

  320. my flesh and blood.

  321. At the same time, across town, my wife

  322. was caring for her father

  323. who had Parkinson's dementia. We had

  324. moved in to try to help him, try to stay

  325. in his home longer, and she bore the

  326. brunt of trying to help him with his

  327. day-to-day activities. That's love.

  328. I remember times when when I've gone

  329. through such distress that I couldn't

  330. sleep

  331. for months. couldn't eat, couldn't

  332. sleep, under such spiritual attack.

  333. And it was my wife who would tell me,

  334. "Don't just go through that alone. Wake

  335. me up." And many times we would just

  336. hold hands in the bed in the middle of

  337. the night as I fought this spiritual

  338. battle. And she'd pray with me and she'd

  339. be there with me. And these are the

  340. times that solidified our love and took

  341. it to another level. Now, we look back

  342. on 28 years of this and it's different.

  343. When I tell her I love her, it's

  344. different. When I tell my son I love

  345. him, it doesn't mean it's nothing that I

  346. tell you I love you. It's just

  347. different. Are you following me? And so

  348. it is with God. And and you may start

  349. with him with this shallow kind of

  350. level. When I first got saved, uh I was

  351. definitely inexperienced and definitely

  352. intoxicated. He touched me in a way that

  353. just wrecked me. And I tried to go to

  354. sleep that night and all I could do is

  355. weep because the love of God was being

  356. poured out on me and I could feel it.

  357. And for the first time in my life, I

  358. felt what real life, real love looks

  359. like and feels like. And all I could do

  360. was weep. But I had no experience, no

  361. disciplehip, no foundation.

  362. And I had to go through those changes

  363. and along the way decide

  364. if I'm going to keep that first love.

  365. See that that inexperienced and

  366. intoxicated love is still love

  367. but that fades.

  368. Can I get a witness?

  369. You've lost that loving feeling.

  370. And all of you that just flashed to the

  371. old Righteous Brother songs, you have

  372. just dated yourself.

  373. Or how about this one? How deep is your

  374. love?

  375. Oh, BG's flashback.

  376. But it's okay. It's real at the altar.

  377. It's real at conversion.

  378. But there's much more depth than that.

  379. See, marriage isn't about rose petals

  380. and

  381. wedding dresses and venues.

  382. Marriage is about bad breath

  383. and no makeup

  384. and attitudes

  385. and little frustrations.

  386. And if you lack depth, you'll be like

  387. these people we see on social media.

  388. He's the greatest thing

  389. that's ever happened in my life.

  390. He sees me.

  391. He understands me. Two months later,

  392. he's the biggest jerk. And everyone

  393. should

  394. cuz if that infatuation

  395. stage, if that intoxication phase

  396. doesn't evolve, it won't endure. But

  397. real love never fails. I preached a

  398. wedding once in the mountains of

  399. California out near Tmacula in the wine

  400. country. The most beautiful setting.

  401. I've ever done a wedding up on a

  402. mountaintop. Gorgeous,

  403. beautiful. And I shared uh a short

  404. message on the love chapter, which is 1

  405. Corinthians 13. And I quoted verses four

  406. and following that love is patient. Love

  407. is kind. It does not envy. It does not

  408. boast. It is not rude. It is not

  409. self-seeking. It is not easily angered.

  410. And it keeps no record of wrongs. Love

  411. does not delight in evil but rejoices in

  412. the truth. It always protects, always

  413. trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

  414. Love never fails.

  415. And I preached that to two people who

  416. had no idea what they were getting into.

  417. But after the ceremony, another couple

  418. who had been married a while came up to

  419. me and said, "Yeah, we don't love like

  420. that.

  421. That's honest."

  422. I've always related to the lyric of the

  423. old the old song. Prone to wander, Lord,

  424. I feel it.

  425. Prone to leave the God I love.

  426. Here's my heart, Lord.

  427. Take and seal it. Seal it for your

  428. courts above.

  429. We can all tend to drift. We can do it

  430. in human relationships and we can do it

  431. in our spiritual relationship with God.

  432. And this church, 30 years had passed

  433. since they had the reputation of being a

  434. loving church. And now they're still

  435. they're still holding a standard, but

  436. they've lost the most important thing.

  437. And so, first things first,

  438. get your love back.

  439. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my

  440. commandments,

  441. and I'll send another comforter, the

  442. Holy Spirit."

  443. Now, I want you to notice this. That was

  444. John chapter 14 in

    John 14 chapter mention

  445. Matthew 4 and Luke 4, where Jesus is

  446. tempted in the wilderness.

  447. He resists the devil, right? and he

  448. overcomes the temptation.

  449. And after the third temptation that he

  450. overcomes,

  451. an angel came and ministered to him and

  452. strengthened him. And he left the

  453. temptation in the wilderness full of the

  454. power of the Holy Spirit.

  455. We see in the garden of Gethsemane right

  456. before he was crucified, he wrestled

  457. with his flesh, not wanting to go to the

  458. cross. And he said, "Father, if there's

  459. any way, please let this cup be taken

  460. from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but

  461. yours be done." And when he did that, an

  462. angel came and strengthened him. Could I

  463. submit to you? The power of the Holy

  464. Spirit and the strength of heaven comes

  465. when we listen to God and obey God and

  466. submit to God. That's what real love is.

  467. and we stop making light of the things

  468. of God. God has been dealing with me

  469. that there was a season when I was

  470. highly legalistic.

  471. Highly legalistic

  472. and I was, you know, I was determined.

  473. I'm going to serve God and by golly,

  474. nobody's going to stop me from serving

  475. God. And you're not going to interfere

  476. with my prayer time. I don't care how

  477. good the meal is are trying to invite me

  478. to. Get behind me, Satan.

  479. I'm serious. It was intense.

  480. I tell my wife and son, I'm going to

  481. pray now. If there's no fire,

  482. don't mess with me.

  483. I'm not even kidding.

  484. Legalistic.

  485. And so I was glad to find freedom.

  486. There was a time in my ministry, this

  487. was unthinkable, wearing a t-shirt and

  488. jeans. And I'd have felt like such a

  489. sinner. like God's going to strike me

  490. dead because of the legalism I was

  491. under. And so when I found freedom in

  492. Christ, I was like, "Oh, this is

  493. awesome." And I began to let myself go

  494. in a lot of areas. But the danger in

  495. that

  496. is it can get too comfortable. And God

  497. said, "Be ye holy as I am holy." And so

  498. even though I'm in the middle of a

  499. sinick world and I have to rub shoulders

  500. with them and I have to work with them

  501. and I have to drive the same roads as

  502. them, even though I have to deal with

  503. sinful people, I can't go hide out in a

  504. in a monastery somewhere. I have to live

  505. on planet Earth.

  506. But neither do I have to compromise my

  507. standards and my beliefs and my

  508. convictions to try to appease a world

  509. that needs Jesus and needs to know

  510. somebody that's walking with him in an

  511. intimate way.

  512. [Applause]

  513. >> Obedience

  514. brings the power of God. We're like,

  515. "Send the Holy Spirit, Lord." He's like,

  516. "Okay, love me.

  517. Love me like that and I'll send you the

  518. Holy Spirit.

  519. >> What's he been dealing with you on?

  520. I don't have to name it. You already

  521. know most likely.

  522. Ah, I love it. I love the Holy Spirit

  523. cuz he he he's already had it at the

  524. forefront of your mind and spirit and it

  525. keeps coming up and he's like, "Love me

  526. by letting go of that. Love me by

  527. relinquishing control of that. love me

  528. by taking your hands off of that.

  529. And you're fighting him and you wonder

  530. where's the power of the Holy Spirit?

  531. Where's the joy of the Lord? That's my

  532. strength.

  533. Love him like that.

  534. First things first.

  535. Verse six, he said something

  536. interesting. This was the other the

  537. bottom slice or the top slice of the

  538. correction sandwich when he said you

  539. hate the deeds of the niclatians which I

  540. also hate.

  541. This is similar to the doctrine of Balum

  542. in the Old Testament

  543. which was just a doctrine or a teaching

  544. that had crept into the church. These

  545. were church-going people that were

  546. compromising

  547. and saying you're free in Christ. You

  548. can do anything you want to. Jesus paid

  549. for you to have anything you want. And

  550. Jesus is like, I hate that.

  551. That's what he said. I hate that spirit.

  552. I hate that. It's a danger to the church

  553. to let our our guard down so much

  554. >> that we're not serving him out of love.

  555. Watch. It's not about black and white

  556. law and rules and it's just love him.

  557. There were 613 commandments in the Old

  558. Testament. And when Jesus boiled it down

  559. to love your love God with all your

  560. heart, soul, mind, and strength, love

  561. your neighbor as yourself, he boiled it

  562. all down to those simple things. And it

  563. really comes to the one thing. Love God.

  564. Because if I love God, I've got to love

  565. you. You're made in his image and

  566. likeness. How could I not love you?

  567. You say, "I don't know how to do that."

  568. Here's the answer to that. We love him

  569. because he first loved us.

  570. without condition.

  571. In your darkest moment, he loved you.

  572. And if you ever get a revelation on

  573. that, you'll love him.

  574. So, we love him because he first loved

  575. us. And then he said, "Love your

  576. neighbor as yourself." And some of you

  577. will say to yourself, like I said to

  578. myself, "How can I love others like I

  579. love myself if I don't love myself?

  580. And you also need the revelation that if

  581. he loved me,

  582. I must be lovable.

  583. So no matter what anyone else has ever

  584. told you or made you feel like,

  585. you've got to get that revelation. He

  586. loves you.

  587. >> And because he loves you,

  588. you're able to love others because

  589. you're loved.

  590. And so he calls them back to that first

  591. love. It's not

  592. a rebuke that's irreversible.

  593. It's not a status that's irreversible.

  594. He said, "Let's just get back to what

  595. you once were." And as I look over my

  596. spiritual journey as well as human

  597. relationships, but my spiritual journey,

  598. as I mentioned before, there have been

  599. times when I'm apathetic and calloused

  600. and it doesn't things don't move me

  601. anymore.

  602. People's issues don't move me anymore.

  603. Can I be honest with you? And there's

  604. those season. like God,

  605. I'm in the caring business and I don't

  606. care.

  607. And it's a scary place to be if you've

  608. ever tasted and seen that the Lord is

  609. good and experienced his love. It's a

  610. scary thing to be feeling like that's

  611. faded to the point where

  612. I'm just going through the motions now.

  613. So he gives them a formula

  614. to correct

  615. their status. Remember

  616. and repent.

  617. Remember from where you've fallen and

  618. repent.

  619. Repent simply means to turn from and to

  620. turn to.

  621. Do you remember

  622. where you came from?

  623. Jeremiah wrote in Lamentations,

  624. "Remember my bitterness and my roaming.

  625. The wormwood and the gall. My soul still

  626. remembers and sinks within me. Yet this

  627. I recall, a mind, therefore I have hope.

  628. It is of the Lord's mercies were not

  629. consumed.

  630. Your compassions never fail. Great is

  631. your faithfulness.

  632. He had to remind himself how bitter,

  633. how lonely it had been before God had

  634. entered life. Can you come up, Jack?

  635. Do you remember?

  636. Do you remember when you first

  637. encountered him?

  638. how pure it was, how simple it was, how

  639. like a little child, you just put your

  640. faith in him and

  641. you felt his love for the first time. Do

  642. you remember

  643. when you couldn't wait to hear a

  644. message? When you couldn't wait to go to

  645. a service? Do you remember

  646. before it got to be

  647. just what we do.

  648. As I said, this is a message from the

  649. heart to the heart and about the heart.

  650. I've been on this journey. In fact, just

  651. a few months ago, God began to stir me.

  652. You don't love me like you used to. And

  653. that's not always easy to hear.

  654. But you know, in marriage counseling,

  655. they they teach you

  656. that no matter how bad a marriage is, if

  657. they're still together,

  658. it can change.

  659. It can get better.

  660. And so it is with our relationship with

  661. God. But I I've drifted

  662. at times,

  663. but I feel him stirring me all over

  664. again.

  665. And his goodness leads us to repentance,

  666. to change.

  667. And we can experience that love all over

  668. again. Not just the infatuation, not

  669. just the intoxication of it all, but

  670. with a deep intimacy

  671. [Music]

  672. that's been established through all that

  673. he's brought you through and done in

  674. you. and you've seen and heard and

  675. experienced.

  676. I love you, Jesus.

  677. Do you hear what I'm saying? Is the

  678. spirit

  679. drawing you closer to to Jesus.

  680. That's the most important thing. Father,

  681. I'm going to ask the worship team to

  682. come as I pray. I just pray that you

  683. would

  684. give us a new heart.

  685. Those of us that need the stony,

  686. calloused heart removed and a soft,

  687. tender heart put in its place. Do that,

  688. Lord.

  689. Let us love you

  690. by obeying you

  691. and by knowing that there's no other

  692. place for us than in your presence.

  693. [Music]

  694. That eternity awaits us. That you

  695. promised us the paradise of God if we

  696. would overcome in this matter.

  697. Don't let us fall prey to complacency to

  698. the point where it chokes out what

  699. you're trying to do in our life.

  700. Draw us close.

  701. Teach us

  702. to love you like you love us.

  703. No matter what. Sold out.

  704. Committed

  705. that no matter what happens,

  706. we're going with Jesus all the way.

  707. If you'd stand, we're going to just

  708. reflect on that this morning.

  709. [Music]
