  3. [applause]

  4. >> Good morning. I need to let my dad on

  5. stage. [laughter] How's my dad, by the

  6. way? Are you proud?

  7. Thanks for the intro today.

  8. Hey, we are in our series when in

  9. Romans. So, we're excited about this

  10. series and digging into uh what Paul has

  11. to say. Pastor Dan kicked us off last

  12. week. Uh talked about the Romans road

  13. and remember learning about that in

  14. Sunday school way back in the day and

  15. the milestones that come along the way.

  16. And and when Pastor Ben asked us, we're

  17. we're doing two weeks in a row. Pastor

  18. Dan was first week and then I'm second

  19. week. I got concerned. And I was like,

  20. man, I really hope Pastor Dan doesn't

  21. steal what I want to talk about because

  22. then I have to start all over again.

  23. But Pastor Dan killed it last week. And

  24. in fact, I was afraid that Pastor Dan

  25. would steal my stuff, but I'm actually

  26. going to steal his.

  27. >> So, we're going to kind of revisit and

  28. piggyback off of what Pastor Dan shared

  29. with us last week. Uh, but we're not

  30. going to go like on the straight road.

  31. We were talking pastor Pastor Dan's like

  32. in the straight road very like broadly

  33. uh uh appealing to everyone and I'm

  34. going to hone in. We're going to kind of

  35. take a scenic route around the Romans

  36. road today and and one milestone that he

  37. shared. So, how many of us have a job?

  38. How many of us have a job?

  39. All right. How many of you love your

  40. job? How many of you love your job? My

  41. mom better love her job. She watches my

  42. daughter every day.

  43. All right. How many of you guys just

  44. work your job because it pays the bills?

  45. You don't love it, you just work it

  46. because you kind of have to because if

  47. you don't Yeah.

  48. So, I work part-time here at Grace

  49. Summit Church. That's part of the job

  50. that I love. But I also work full-time

  51. in what we call a secular job in in the

  52. ministry circles. But I don't really

  53. like that because really any job is

  54. another opportunity for ministry outside

  55. of the church.

  56. So anyways, I've worked at Lincoln

  57. Financial for 15 years here in Fort

  58. Wayne 10 years in the position that I'm

  59. at right now. Now, I don't necessarily

  60. love my job, but I do like my job and it

  61. does pay the bills. So, I don't know

  62. about the kind of jobs that you all

  63. have, but at my job, there are different

  64. levels of positions that you can be in.

  65. And then within those levels, there's a

  66. pay scale of whatever position you're

  67. in, there's a minimum amount that you

  68. can make and there's a maximum amount

  69. that you can make. And so you're paid

  70. somewhere in that uh there's no matter

  71. how long you work there, how little you

  72. work in a certain position, you'll never

  73. get less than a minimum amount. You'll

  74. never get more than a maximum amount.

  75. Now on that scale and within it, you

  76. earn higher on the scale the better you

  77. are at your job and the longer that

  78. you've been there. So this is what's

  79. called in the corporate world, in

  80. corporate speak, this is what's called

  81. merit-based pay. So, you get paid for

  82. how well you're working, how long you've

  83. worked.

  84. It's the work you put in or the return

  85. that your employer gets back from their

  86. investment in you. So, that determines

  87. your wages. And this is true for most

  88. employers. The work that you put in or

  89. that return determines how much you

  90. make. So, how many people watch the

  91. World Series?

  92. A few of us. Any Dodgers fans in the

  93. house? All right. We'll pray for you

  94. sinners.

  95. So, I haven't watched a full game of

  96. baseball uh from beginning to end since

  97. 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series.

  98. There's God's team. Hallelujah.

  99. >> Cubs won the World Series. Well, last

  100. night me and Kate were like, "We need to

  101. watch this, but we don't have like an

  102. antenna." So, Kate's like frantically

  103. trying to figure out how can we watch

  104. this? There's got to be like a free

  105. trial. So, we found a free trial and we

  106. watched it last night and then we're

  107. canceling it. Um, but we watched the

  108. whole game. Thank goodness for daylight

  109. savings time ending, right? You got that

  110. extra hour of sleep. How many stayed up

  111. and watched it?

  112. >> A few of you. Sally Hannah said she

  113. tried but they went to bed.

  114. >> Love you, Sally. [laughter]

  115. >> All right, so with the World Series on

  116. Monday night, the Dodgers and the Blue

  117. Jays played an 18 in game, which is

  118. almost twice as long as a normal

  119. baseball game. They played 18 innings.

  120. And the Dodgers have a player and his

  121. name is Shi Otani. He's a Japanese

  122. player. He came over and this guy has

  123. just an absolutely obscene contract. He

  124. makes a ridiculous amount of money. So

  125. for that one game, so 18 innings, about

  126. 6 hours of baseball

  127. for one game, Show Otani made based on

  128. his base salary for one game, $864,000

  129. >> for one game. One game of baseball. more

  130. money than most of us can dream of

  131. making in years. Okay, he makes it in

  132. one game. So, Shoi Otani signed a

  133. 10-year, $700 million contract with the

  134. Dodgers. So, that's a lot of money,

  135. right? That'd be nice if we get a little

  136. tithe of that. Come on to our church.

  137. Seems like a lot. But just this year, so

  138. we think about this, they paid him all

  139. this money just this year. or show Otani

  140. for the Dodgers made with his

  141. endorsements, with his name recognition,

  142. with the foreign interest that he brings

  143. in from Japan, he made the Dodgers $550

  144. million. He made them that. Now that

  145. they've won the World Series, it's

  146. probably even more. And so Shi Otani is

  147. they're going to have his contract paid

  148. for within a year or two. So

  149. his contract will pay for itself and

  150. then some and that is merit-based pay.

  151. So he's returning to the Dodgers what

  152. they are giving to him and he's earned

  153. that. Now what does baseball have

  154. anything to do with what Pastor Dan

  155. talked about last week? [snorts]

  156. So we talked about our jobs and we

  157. talked about kind of this this pay scale

  158. and the merit-based pay. Another word

  159. for your pay are your wages. That's what

  160. you earn. What have you earned? What has

  161. your merit at your job gotten you? And

  162. so we're going to apply that from our

  163. jobs into the milestone that Pastor Dan

  164. gave us last week in Romans 6:23 where

    Romans 6:23

  165. it says, "For the wages of sin," so this

  166. is what we earn. This is what our merit

  167. gets us. The wages of sin is death, but

  168. the free gift of God is eternal life in

  169. Christ Jesus our Lord. So this morning

  170. we're going to be talking about wages

  171. and gifts. And so this milestone Pastor

  172. Dan shared with he likened it to

  173. receiving a bill and God kind of takes

  174. that bill away and gives you something

  175. instead. But again, I'm veering off of

  176. the road a little bit and we're going to

  177. liken it to the wages that we've earned

  178. for what we've done.

  179. Unfortunately,

  180. the human condition thanks to Adam and

  181. Eve is that we're all sinful and born

  182. with sin innately within us. There is

  183. nothing that we can do to earn enough

  184. wages to avoid the consequences of sin.

  185. Even if we're making as much as Shi

  186. Otani, that is not enough

  187. to avoid it. Now, fortunately for us,

  188. somebody greater than Shi Otani came.

  189. Jesus came, God the Son, stepped from

  190. heaven to earth, born of a virgin, died

  191. on the cross, rose from the grave, all

  192. so that God could give us a gift and

  193. forget about what we've earned, that we

  194. don't have to worry about our wages.

  195. And we see this idea over and over in

  196. Romans, and we'll be talking about over

  197. these next few weeks of this gift. And

  198. in Romans 5:12

    Romans 5:12

  199. says, "Therefore, just as sin came into

  200. the world through one man and death

  201. through sin, and so death spread to all

  202. men because all sinned." We're going to

  203. skip ahead to verse 15. But the free

  204. gift is not like the trespass.

  205. For if many died through one man, so

  206. Adam, through Adam's trespass, much more

  207. have the grace of God and the free gift

  208. by the grace of that one man, Jesus

  209. Christ, abounded for many.

  210. And the free gift is not like the result

  211. of that one man's sin. For the judgment

  212. following one trespass brought

  213. condemnation, but the free gift

  214. following many trans trespasses brought

  215. justification.

  216. So, Adam's one sin cost us everything.

  217. But Jesus's gift covers everything.

  218. For if because of one man's trespass,

  219. death reigned through that one man, much

  220. more will those who receive the

  221. abundance of grace and the free gift of

  222. righteousness

  223. reign in life through the one man, Jesus

  224. Christ. So God gives us a gift instead

  225. of the wages that we've earned. But

  226. there's a problem. And Pastor Dan did an

  227. interesting illustration last week. He

  228. had uh some gift cards. So he he had

  229. some free Starbucks that he was giving

  230. away. He had free Chick-fil-A. That's

  231. God's chicken.

  232. And he had free Smoothie King if you're

  233. into that sort of thing. Only one person

  234. in each service. So, two people came

  235. down to claim the Starbucks card. He

  236. held them out. He said, "Come and get

  237. them." And one person came down first

  238. service. One person came down second

  239. service to grab those Starbucks gift

  240. cards. First service for the

  241. Chick-fil-A. Two people tried to come

  242. up. One beat out the other, so only one

  243. person got a gift, but I've been told

  244. the other person did receive a gift

  245. card. So, we got them taken care of. So,

  246. two came up and then one came up for

  247. Chick-fil-A and second service, which

  248. makes no sense. It's Jesus's chicken.

  249. Two came for the Smoothie King card. A

  250. total of seven people came to accept the

  251. gift that Pastor Dan was offering. So,

  252. he offered these these cards. Seven

  253. people came, got out of their seats, and

  254. came down to accept the gift out of the

  255. dozens of people that were sitting in

  256. the room.

  257. So, it made me think

  258. there was a gift that was offered free

  259. of charge.

  260. Why

  261. weren't more people interested in the

  262. gift?

  263. Why do we often reject gifts freely

  264. given to anyone who would come and

  265. receive them?

  266. See, God offers us a gift worth far more

  267. than even Chick-fil-A, far more than

  268. even Starbucks.

  269. And whether it's a gift card or it's

  270. salvation or it's rededication or it's

  271. healing or it's a promise that God's

  272. made to us or direction that God wants

  273. to give to us. What's stopping us from

  274. [snorts] coming up and receiving the

  275. gift?

  276. So today I want to talk about four

  277. things that hold us back from God's

  278. gifts to us.

  279. And the first thing I want to talk about

  280. that holds us back from God's gifts is

  281. disbelief.

  282. So, there's a saying, we've probably all

  283. heard it. If it seems too good to be

  284. true,

  285. >> it probably is. And that's a common

  286. saying, we've heard it. We live in a

  287. skeptical and a cynical society. No one

  288. takes anything at face value. Now, we'd

  289. like to think that Pastor Dan didn't go

  290. out and spend the gift cards and then

  291. bring them here and give us empty gift

  292. cards, right? We'd like to think that.

  293. Uh but those who accepted the gifts that

  294. were received

  295. had no way of knowing that they had any

  296. value until they used them.

  297. Okay? And we did verify first service

  298. the Starbucks cards worked. Uh so they

  299. they were working gift cards. But many

  300. times we'll miss or even refuse God's

  301. gift because we lack faith to believe

  302. that it's a good gift and that it has

  303. value.

  304. For salvation, the first step in

  305. salvation is to believe in your heart.

  306. Without belief, the gift remains

  307. unclaimed for healing and miracles and

  308. direction.

  309. Belief is required to receive the gift.

  310. So, we go back and we're looking at

  311. Jesus and Jesus has sent his disciples

  312. out uh to do his work, to heal, to

  313. teach, to bring people to him. And so

  314. they're going out and they're doing all

  315. these things and there's a boy that's

  316. possessed by a demon and the disciples

  317. are trying to cast this demon out and

  318. it's just not working. And finally they

  319. call Jesus over and Jesus we can't get

  320. this guy free. And so Jesus in Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  321. chapter 9 and this is an interesting

  322. passage because we see some of the

  323. humanity of Jesus here. Jesus gets a

  324. little bit exasperated with his

  325. disciples here and then later on he gets

  326. sarcastic. So let's see what Jesus has

  327. to say here. So they brought this person

  328. to Jesus to be freed from the demonic

  329. possession. And Jesus answered them in

  330. Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  331. Oh faithless generation, how long am I

  332. to be with you? How long am I to bear

  333. with you? Bring him to me. He's like,

  334. I'll do it. Bring him to me. And they

  335. brought the boy to him. And when the

  336. spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed

  337. the boy, and he fell on the ground and

  338. rolled about foaming at the mouth. And

  339. Jesus asked his father, "How long has

  340. this been happening to him?" And he

  341. said, "From childhood." And it is often

  342. cast him into the fire and into water to

  343. destroy him. But if you can do anything,

  344. have compassion on us and help us. And

  345. here's Jesus gets a little bit

  346. sarcastic.

  347. Jesus said to him,"If you can."

  348. So, he's kind of calling him out. If you

  349. can, all things are possible for one who

  350. believes. And immediately the father of

  351. the child cried out and said, "I

  352. believe. Help my unbelief."

  353. And when Jesus saw that a crowd came

  354. running together, he rebuked the unclean

  355. spirit, saying to it, "You mutant deaf

  356. spirit, I command you, come out of him,

  357. and never enter him again." And after

  358. crying out and convulsing him terribly,

  359. it came out and the boy was like a

  360. corpse. So that most of them said, "He

  361. is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand

  362. and lifted him up and he arose. And so

  363. we see in this story,

  364. belief had to come first. Jesus didn't

  365. cast the spirit out of that boy until

  366. the father believed that he could. So at

  367. first, the father said, "If you can."

  368. And then Jesus kind of calls him out. He

  369. said you have to believe.

  370. Belief has to come first and freedom

  371. came second. Faith always comes before

  372. freedom. So we have to let go of our

  373. disbelief

  374. to accept the gift. The second thing

  375. that holds us back kind of related to

  376. disbelief and maybe a little more

  377. focused in is distrust.

  378. If we lack belief, we also lack trust.

  379. But we can believe and [snorts] still

  380. not trust. Okay, two sides of the same

  381. coin. And again, we probably trust

  382. Pastor Dan to give us working gift

  383. cards. But maybe just in our minds, if

  384. we haven't spoken to Pastor Dan or we

  385. don't know Pastor Dan, maybe just just

  386. for a fleeting moment, we thought maybe

  387. he's messing with us,

  388. >> right?

  389. >> Maybe he's messing with us.

  390. We know Pastor Dan as a man of

  391. integrity.

  392. >> Yes.

  393. to give us working gift cards.

  394. But here's the hard thing about trust

  395. and in coming to receive the gift. Truly

  396. trusting someone means giving them

  397. control.

  398. How many of you have done a trust fall

  399. before? So with like I was back in

  400. middle school or whatever and we go to

  401. the the field trip or whatever and you

  402. stand on the platform and there's like

  403. six people or eight people on the ground

  404. and you have to turn around. You have to

  405. turn your back to them. Sorry, Leo. I

  406. turned my back to the camera. You turn

  407. your back to them and you fall

  408. backwards. Uh, you are not in control.

  409. Okay? You have to trust the people

  410. behind you to catch you. Okay? Pastor

  411. Dane could have gotten you all the way

  412. up here and like had it holding out and

  413. just went psych and took it back.

  414. That would have been embarrassing. It

  415. would have been humiliating for you. And

  416. when you go to accept the gift, you give

  417. control to the giver.

  418. And on a grander scale, this is why we

  419. find ourselves lacking trust in what God

  420. has for us. We have to trust that what's

  421. in God's hands is better than what's in

  422. our hands.

  423. >> We ultimately have to give God control

  424. and give up our control.

  425. Proverbs chapter 3

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  426. illustrates this. It says, "Trust in the

  427. Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on

  428. your own understanding.

  429. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he

  430. will make straight your paths. Be not

  431. wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and

  432. turn away from evil. It will be healing

  433. to your flesh and refreshment to your

  434. bones."

  435. So as humans, our default mindset, kind

  436. of how our brains work as fallen humans

  437. is to lean on our own understanding.

  438. What we know, what's our situation?

  439. What's our perception?

  440. We have to be in control.

  441. We like to think ourselves wise in our

  442. own eyes. Like to think that we know

  443. what's best, that we know the right

  444. answer.

  445. But the problem is that our perspective

  446. is so narrow,

  447. infinitely narrow compared to God's

  448. perspective. And he can see the end

  449. result of all of these things that are

  450. happening to us. We have to be willing

  451. to let go of control, to let go of our

  452. trust solely in ourselves and learn to

  453. trust in him.

  454. And there are times that it takes

  455. immense faith in devastating

  456. circumstances to let go of that control

  457. and to let God have it and to make

  458. ourselves vulnerable.

  459. But when we can practice that faith and

  460. when we can lose control seeding it to

  461. him, we then can accept the gift and see

  462. that it is far better than anything that

  463. we could have accomplished by ourselves

  464. or any situ any end of the situation

  465. that we could have accomplished. We have

  466. to trust and we have to believe. And

  467. Paul again Romans chapter 4 16 says that

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  468. is why it depends on faith in order that

  469. the promise may rest on grace and be

  470. guaranteed to all his offspring

  471. not only to the adhering of the law but

  472. also to the one who shares the faith of

  473. Abraham. So Paul's talking about Abraham

  474. here who is the father of us all. As it

  475. is written, I have made you the father

  476. of many nations in the presence of the

  477. God in whom he believed, who gives life

  478. to the dead and calls into existence the

  479. things that do not exist. In hope,

  480. Abraham believed against hope, that he

  481. should become the father of many

  482. nations, as he had been told, "So shall

  483. your offspring be." He did not weaken in

  484. faith when he considered his own body

  485. which was as good as dead since he was

  486. about 100 years old or when he

  487. considered the barrenness of Sarah's

  488. womb. No unbelief made him waver

  489. concerning the promise of God. But he

  490. grew strong in his faith and he gave

  491. glory to God fully convinced that God

  492. was able to do what he had promised.

  493. That is why his faith was counted to him

  494. as righteousness. So Abraham is 100

  495. years old and God gives him this

  496. promise. There's no reason for Abraham

  497. to believe or trust in the natural that

  498. God's going to accomplish this. He's

  499. 100. Sarah's at least 80. The likelihood

  500. of them having any children at this

  501. point is none. Right? But yet Abraham

  502. trusts God.

  503. He looks beyond his situation. He looks

  504. beyond his circumstances. He looks

  505. beyond his perception.

  506. to know the power of God and the promise

  507. that he would give. Letting go of

  508. unbelief and receiving the gift of God's

  509. promise. And so in order to come and to

  510. receive the gift, we have to let go of

  511. our disbelief. We have to let go of our

  512. distrust.

  513. The third thing that we have to let go

  514. of, and this is really difficult for us,

  515. is our pride.

  516. Pride

  517. says as he's holding the gift card out

  518. or the gift, as we're holding out the

  519. gift, pride says, "I don't need that.

  520. I don't want people to know that I need

  521. it.

  522. I don't want people to think less of

  523. me." It starts to become what are going

  524. to people going to think of me if I go

  525. and accept this gift?

  526. I don't want to be embarrassed. I don't

  527. want to be humbled. I don't want to look

  528. weak.

  529. And this is about a lot more than gift

  530. cards.

  531. We hate looking weak in front of other

  532. people.

  533. So, we're starting to get into the hard

  534. part now. And I want us to take a moment

  535. and think, truly think about this for a

  536. moment.

  537. Are you truly in such a place where you

  538. require no prayer for anything

  539. or any situation in your life? You don't

  540. have to answer. Just think about it.

  541. If you are in a place where you require

  542. no prayer, then Jesus has returned and

  543. you are him.

  544. >> Okay?

  545. >> Amen.

  546. You don't require prayer

  547. in your work, [snorts] in your walk with

  548. God, just to be closer to him,

  549. can we all?

  550. Do you need healing?

  551. And not just like the big healings, not

  552. like just cancer or just major diseases,

  553. but the cold that you woke up with or

  554. the sore throat.

  555. God doesn't care about just the big

  556. things. God cares about the minutia of

  557. our lives and he wants us to draw close

  558. to him and to receive what he has for

  559. us.

  560. Is there nothing that God can give you

  561. that can make you a stronger Christian

  562. that can bring you freedom from

  563. addiction? That can bring healing.

  564. >> So, we need to push beyond our pride and

  565. find what gift God may already have

  566. waiting for you if you just let go.

  567. And so Jesus addresses this in the book

  568. of Luke chapter 18. He's telling a

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  569. parable. I'm going to paraphrase just a

  570. little bit as we're going through it. He

  571. also told this parable to someone who

  572. trusted in themselves that they were

  573. righteous and treated others with

  574. contempt.

  575. Two men went up into the temple to pray.

  576. One a Pharisee and the other a tax

  577. collector. The Pharisee standing by

  578. himself prayed thus, "God, I thank you

  579. that I am not like other men,

  580. extortioners,

  581. unjust,

  582. adulterers,

  583. Democrats,

  584. Republicans.

  585. God doesn't honor that."

  586. Or even like this tax collector, I fast

  587. twice a week. I give tithes of all that

  588. I get. But the tax collector,

  589. standing far off, would not even lift up

  590. his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast,

  591. saying, "God, be merciful to me a

  592. sinner. I tell you, this man went down

  593. to his house justified rather than the

  594. other. For everyone who exalts himself

  595. will be humbled,

  596. but the one who humbles himself will be

  597. exalted. So you can either humble

  598. yourself or God will humble you.

  599. There's only two options.

  600. And here's the thing, you can't just

  601. call yourself humble and be humble.

  602. >> Okay? I'm so humble.

  603. >> You don't measure your own humility.

  604. Okay?

  605. Humility can only be recognized in you

  606. by others.

  607. >> It's not an inner quality only. Humility

  608. has to be an outer quality. Has to be

  609. shown outwardly to God or the people

  610. around you. And so today, if you're

  611. dealing with pride, maybe you don't

  612. recognize it. I pray that God convicts

  613. us today, convicts me today to break

  614. pride and let us receive the gift that

  615. he has for us. Yes. Amen.

  616. >> To the unsaved, he has salvation

  617. available to you. To the saved, he has

  618. rededication, a new, deeper relationship

  619. with him, freedom, and healing if we

  620. only let go of our pride.

  621. Paul addresses this Romans 12:3. For by

    Romans 12:3

  622. the grace given to me, I say to everyone

  623. among you not to think of himself more

  624. highly than he ought to think, but to

  625. think with sober judgment, each

  626. according to the measure of faith that

  627. God has assigned.

  628. In the end, we are nothing

  629. but sinners saved by grace through our

  630. faith in Jesus Christ. and we would do

  631. well to remember that and accept the

  632. gift today that God has for you. So he

  633. talked about disbelief and distrust and

  634. they were kind of the same coin,

  635. different sides of the same coin and

  636. have kind of the same idea here. We just

  637. talked about pride and letting go of

  638. pride. And the fourth thing that holds

  639. us back is shame.

  640. We'll start closing here. If if pride

  641. says I don't need it, shame says I don't

  642. deserve it.

  643. Shame says I'm unworthy of it.

  644. And instead of of building ourselves up

  645. in pride, we tear ourselves down in

  646. shame.

  647. And God doesn't want either for us. He

  648. doesn't want us to be proud and he

  649. doesn't want us to be ashamed.

  650. >> [snorts]

  651. >> And the thing about shame, shame is

  652. often more dangerous and it's more

  653. destructive than pride.

  654. >> It can also be more subtle.

  655. Shame can affect you without your

  656. knowledge.

  657. So, a few years ago, we went through the

  658. the freedom group and I know um Radiant

  659. Women just went through it a couple

  660. semesters ago and so you guys can can

  661. understand what I'm about to say. Many

  662. of us have gone through it, but the

  663. first time that I went through it, we

  664. went through the 13 weeks and then

  665. there's a retreat at the end and they

  666. have several sessions throughout that

  667. retreat. And going in like as a pastor,

  668. you kind of think that you have

  669. everything together and you're like, I'm

  670. just doing it to learn about it and so

  671. that I can help other people as they're

  672. going through it. Uh, and I went into

  673. that retreat feeling super heavy

  674. and and God started doing some work in

  675. me in that through the whole process and

  676. in the retreat. And so what I like to

  677. say and try not to laugh because it's

  678. kind of a Shrek reference. Deep on the

  679. inside of me there was an onion. Okay?

  680. And

  681. as we're going through these sessions,

  682. there were several of them. And every

  683. session, God would God would reach in

  684. and he'd peel a layer away.

  685. And so every session, I'm starting to

  686. feel lighter. I'm like, "God, what are

  687. you doing?" Like, I'm supposed to be

  688. helping other people. And this is

  689. totally a trap for any pastor because we

  690. think we have it all together.

  691. I think that I have it all together and

  692. I'm supposed to help other people. And

  693. God's like, "Ah, you don't have it all

  694. together."

  695. So he's peeling these layers off of what

  696. is happening, what's holding me back

  697. from this gift of freedom that God has

  698. for me. And so we go through all these

  699. things and we get to the last session.

  700. Thankfully, God took his time. He he

  701. peeled that last layer away and there

  702. was a situation from when I was younger

  703. that uh caused great shame in me.

  704. And over the years, I buried it and left

  705. it there and didn't deal with it, not

  706. even knowing that it was there. And God

  707. revealed that to me, and I'm like,

  708. that's what's been holding me back. And

  709. he took it. And I left feeling a hundred

  710. times lighter than when I walked in. All

  711. because unrealized shame. Things that I

  712. didn't know happened that affected me in

  713. ways that I didn't expect. Shame can be

  714. very subtle.

  715. It's a fear of accepting the gift,

  716. believing that we're unworthy of it due

  717. to our own actions, our own thoughts, or

  718. our own past,

  719. often leading to harming ourselves.

  720. Shame causes us to constantly look

  721. backwards.

  722. causing us to harm ourselves spiritually

  723. and physically.

  724. Shame can come from various places.

  725. Sometimes it's something that we've

  726. done, an action that we took, a sin we

  727. committed, a word we said, an angry

  728. reaction, a habitual sin, a person that

  729. we've wronged or caused hurt to, an

  730. addiction that we can't kick, drugs or

  731. alcohol or pornography or food. things

  732. that slowly destroy us from the inside.

  733. It can be that we've disappointed

  734. someone.

  735. Sometimes

  736. it's not something we've done. Sometimes

  737. it's something that's happened to us

  738. beyond our control. physical, mental

  739. abuse, sexual abuse, spiritual abuse or

  740. church hurt, bullying or abandonment or

  741. rejection,

  742. divorce,

  743. >> family breakdown. We've seen it all and

  744. it all brings shame and it all tries to

  745. bring us down

  746. and it makes us feel unworthy of the

  747. gift.

  748. And that is one of Satan's greatest

  749. lies. if he can convince you to focus on

  750. your past to convince you that you don't

  751. deserve and shouldn't receive God's

  752. gift. So, he's preventing you from

  753. taking the gift,

  754. then he doesn't have to deceive you

  755. after you have the gift, to try to take

  756. it back. It's a lot harder to take the

  757. gift back once you've received it than

  758. to prevent you from taking it at all.

  759. >> Okay?

  760. Because in the end, Satan's lazy. He

  761. doesn't want have to do more work than

  762. he has to. If he can get you before

  763. receiving the gift, that means that's a

  764. lot less work for him to do after you

  765. take the gift. And so, we're going to

  766. challenge you this morning to take the

  767. gift.

  768. >> Shame never comes from God.

  769. >> And shame is never God's desire for you.

  770. Amen.

  771. >> Romans 5,

  772. starting in verse one, Paul really

  773. illustrates this. He says, "Therefore,

  774. since we have been justified by faith,

  775. we have peace with God through our Lord

  776. Jesus Christ. Through him, we have also

  777. obtained access by faith into this grace

  778. in which we stand. if we rejoice in the

  779. hope of the glory of God. Not only that,

  780. but we rejoice in our sufferings,

  781. knowing that suffering produces

  782. endurance. Endurance produces character.

  783. Character produces hope. And hope does

  784. not put us to shame.

  785. Because God's love has been poured into

  786. our hearts through the Holy Spirit who

  787. has been given to us. God's love breaks

  788. shame into a million pieces.

  789. For while we were still weak, at the

  790. right time, Christ died for the ungodly.

  791. For one will scarcely die for a

  792. righteous person. Though perhaps for a

  793. good person, one would dare [music] even

  794. to die. But God shows his love for us.

  795. And that while we were still sinners,

  796. Christ died for us. What did Jesus say

  797. on the cross? Said, "Father, forgive

  798. them."

  799. While they're spitting on him, while

  800. they're mocking him,

  801. while they're cursing him,

  802. Jesus forgive forgave them.

  803. And because he did that, Paul can write

  804. in Romans chapter 8, "There is therefore

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  805. now no condemnation

  806. for those who are in Christ Jesus. There

  807. is no shame to be had in Christ Jesus."

  808. And if Satan can't tempt you into pride,

  809. [music] shame is the tool that he'll use

  810. to get you to reject God's gift for you.

  811. If he can't make you feel too highly

  812. about yourself, he'll make you feel

  813. lowly about yourself.

  814. But here's the beauty of the gift.

  815. for any of those things that hold us

  816. back. Whether it's disbelief or distrust

  817. or pride or shame, the beauty of it is

  818. that you never have to earn the gift.

  819. And if you feel unworthy of it, remember

  820. that unlike our secular jobs, [music]

  821. we're not on a merit-based pay scale.

  822. In fact, the very definition of grace is

  823. unmmerited favor. It's favor that we

  824. don't deserve, but that God gives us.

  825. He gives us the gift regardless of our

  826. own shortcomings, regardless of our

  827. past.

  828. Our sin makes [music] us undeserving.

  829. But Jesus's work on the cross, makes us

  830. worthy recipients.

  831. Your sin, your past, your shame, your

  832. previous actions

  833. are not more powerful than the blood of

  834. Jesus.

  835. And God has a gift for you today.

  836. As I assembled this message and as I was

  837. studying and putting it together and it

  838. it started kind of light and then as it

  839. was going on, it got heavier and and

  840. [music] heavier and weightier and

  841. weightier

  842. and doesn't happen very often as I'm

  843. preparing a message, but the the Holy

  844. Spirit resonated with with my spirit.

  845. And it's it's a feeling you can't

  846. describe.

  847. But today

  848. there's at least one, but maybe more

  849. likely there's multiple of you and me. I

  850. believe there are multiple people who

  851. need to step out, [music]

  852. accept the gift of God today. This is

  853. your opportunity. So I'm going to invite

  854. the the worship team to come as we stand

  855. together.

  856. And I want to invite the prayer team

  857. to come down to the front.

  858. [music]

  859. And this morning,

  860. I believe that that God stands at the

  861. altar, gift [music] in hand

  862. for you,

  863. waiting for you to come and receive it.

  864. And so we [music] need to put away

  865. disbelief.

  866. We need to put away distrust.

  867. We need to swallow [music] our pride.

  868. >> And we need to leave behind our shame.

  869. God is ready. His arms are open. The

  870. gifts in his hands, ready to give to you

  871. today.

  872. Go get it.

  873. Don't miss the gift that he has for you

  874. today. And guys, who cares

  875. >> what anybody else thinks? That's right.

  876. That

  877. >> nothing holds us back more from coming

  878. to the altar than the people around us.

  879. >> And it's not their fault. It's our they

  880. don't care.

  881. [music]

  882. This is an intimate moment for you and

  883. for God.

  884. And so, let's take another moment. We we

  885. we focused earlier on

  886. what we need. What's the thing that we

  887. need prayer for? Whether it's a big

  888. thing [music] or whether it's a small

  889. thing.

  890. And so hold on to that thought and don't

  891. lose it and bring it to the altar and

  892. let God replace it with a gift that he

  893. has waiting for you today.

  894. Receive the gift. And we're going to

  895. [music] come full circle here. We're

  896. going to read Romans chapter 6 and we're

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  897. going to start a little earlier in verse

  898. 20. Paul says, "For [music] when you

  899. were slaves of sin, you were free in

  900. regard to righteousness. But what fruit

  901. were you getting at that time from

  902. [music] the things of which you are now

  903. ashamed?

  904. For the end of those things is death.

  905. But now that you have been set free from

  906. sin and have become slaves of God, the

  907. fruit you get leads to sanctification

  908. and its end eternal life.

  909. For the [music] wages of sin are

  910. merit-based pay is death. But the free

  911. gift of God is eternal life in Christ

  912. Jesus our Lord. Let's pray today. God,

  913. >> we're thankful for the gift, Lord, first

  914. of salvation that God, you made

  915. available the opportunity for us to know

  916. you, to dwell in your presence, to seek

  917. you, [music]

  918. >> to know that you are real. And so Lord,

  919. today in the house, if there's someone

  920. that doesn't know you, Lord, we pray you

  921. prompt their hearts with the Holy Spirit

  922. work,

  923. draw them to receive the gift today. For

  924. those in the house, we're already saved.

  925. We already believe. We already trust.

  926. Lord, we pray that you break pride in

  927. this room today. That you break shame in

  928. this room today. Lord, dig out the

  929. things that are deep within us that are

  930. holding us back from what you have for

  931. us.

  932. Let us focus on you today in Jesus name.

  933. Amen. The prayer team is here. Don't

  934. miss what God has for you today. [music]

  935. >> [music]
