  1. Heat. Heat.

  2. Hey. Hey. Hey.

  3. May I help

  4. for a third night?

  5. We need a room for two people with a

  6. crib.

  7. >> Yeah. Well, but it's not my baby. I

  8. mean, it is my baby, but technically

  9. it's not my baby. And Angel

  10. is pregnant, but she's

  11. It's hard to

  12. know it sounds.

  13. We've been to every town and every

  14. town if I had a reservation here

  15. unless anybody in your party allergic to

  16. sheep. You got to have something. I am a

  17. platinum holder and I don't feel as if

  18. I'm being treated like

  19. Caesar Augustus, but if you don't have a

  20. reservation, they don't have a room.

  21. Okay, we're back. There can't be that

  22. many people that want to stay.

  23. Is there a manager I can speak to? Sure.

  24. I'm sorry.

  25. All right. Well, you're going to get a

  26. onear

  27. and you're going to go down in history.

  28. to stay in the barn. They do. We will

  29. not stay in a flyest barnyard animal out

  30. with donkeys and sheep dropping sausage

  31. next to our sleep. I will accept nothing

  32. less than I can offer you a complimental

  33. rep. Okay,

  34. >> man. What kind of church do we have

  35. here? What kind of If you guys ever

  36. wondered what type of reals show up in

  37. my algorithm, it's this stuff, right?

  38. Hallelujah. Well, hey, Grace Summit

  39. Church, it is Christmas Sunday. Say,

  40. "Merry Christmas."

  41. >> Merry Christmas.

  42. >> Well, merry Christmas back to you. Thank

  43. you.

  44. >> Hey, if you're a a first-time guest with

  45. us, I want to say welcome and merry

  46. Christmas to you. My name is Ben. Have

  47. the opportunity to serve as lead pastor

  48. here. And what a good day to be in

  49. church. Uh Christmas Sunday. Amen. And

  50. uh man, we already had we're at three

  51. services today. We already had the the

  52. early morning first service and I

  53. preached, but I think this service is

  54. going to be a little bit better. And

  55. I'll tell you why. After the first

  56. service, uh, somebody gave me a

  57. Christmas gift. A young man in the

  58. church gave me some new socks.

  59. >> You guys want to see them? Look at

  60. these.

  61. >> Look at this. Oh, if I can get my leg up

  62. here.

  63. >> It says, "Awesome pastor."

  64. And I said, "Man, I'm preaching the

  65. second service with new socks."

  66. And I don't know about you, but I think

  67. new socks come with a new anointing. Oh

  68. my goodness.

  69. >> Hallelujah.

  70. >> Yeah.

  71. New socks for Christmas.

  72. Well, we're going to get into the word

  73. of God today. After a goofy video and

  74. goofy socks, we should probably pray.

  75. Pray with me. Father, we thank you,

  76. Lord, for revival breaking loose on the

  77. inside of every soul. Father, I thank

  78. you for an anointing today that shatters

  79. the yoke of bondage in our hearts.

  80. Father, we came to hear from you, Lord.

  81. And I thank you, God, that our spiritual

  82. ears are in tune and receptive to

  83. everything you're giving us today.

  84. Father, we came to celebrate the birth

  85. of Jesus.

  86. And Lord, I pray that we celebrate God

  87. Jesus on the inside of us, salvation and

  88. freedom and power. And so Lord, I thank

  89. you God for being in this atmosphere. I

  90. thank you for your presence and I thank

  91. you for speaking now in Jesus name.

  92. Amen. Well, hey, we've been in a series

  93. called Heaven Came Down. And uh man, we

  94. we've been on a little bit of a journey.

  95. We talked about gratitude a few weeks

  96. ago, praising and uh gratitude, how it's

  97. the key that opens the door. It releases

  98. heaven on earth. We saw Paul and Silas

  99. in the jail and and last week we looked

  100. at uh Jacob's ladder and uh saw that God

  101. shows up in our mess, not just our

  102. success. Uh thankful for that. And uh

  103. really God, as I was praying into uh

  104. what God would have me to share with you

  105. this morning, God challenged me last

  106. week. Uh, I I gave you a quick oneliner

  107. that the mess became the message. And

  108. God said, "Hey, double down on that

  109. because you're we're a mess. Look at

  110. your neighbor and say, "You're a mess."

  111. >> You know, on Christmas, we get all

  112. cleaned up, don't we? Like to come in on

  113. our nice Christmas. You guys like my new

  114. sport coat?

  115. >> Yeah.

  116. >> You know, feeling good, all cleaned up.

  117. And it's one thing to be cleaned up on

  118. the outside. Can I say it's another

  119. thing to be cleaned up on the inside?

  120. >> Title of the message today is the mess

  121. became the message.

  122. The mess became the message. Uh I want

  123. to read a scripture. You this won't be

  124. on your screen because I just added it

  125. between services.

  126. Stick with me folks. Come on.

  127. Uh, Matthew 1 and verse 23 says,

  128. "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and

  129. bear a son, and they shall call his name

  130. Emmanuel."

  131. Isn't that a good scripture?

  132. >> Good Christmas scripture. You know, I

  133. think about all of the kind of coined

  134. scriptures around the Christmas season

  135. and I think about, man, the nativity

  136. scenes and all the different things. Uh

  137. the Christmas story is something that uh

  138. we in western civilization have kind of

  139. romanticized a little bit, haven't we? I

  140. mean just the way that we approach the

  141. topic. Uh we kind of come at it. We have

  142. the songs and and we watch the movies.

  143. Elf, that's not a great representation

  144. of the nativity, right?

  145. Anyone in here watch any of the uh the

  146. Hallmark Christmas movies? Those are

  147. kind of fun, aren't they?

  148. >> No. No.

  149. Thank you, Miss Sandy. God bless you.

  150. We kind of get caught up. We decorate

  151. the house and and tell the stories and

  152. kind of it's easy for our minds to get

  153. locked into a specific image or an idea

  154. of what the birth of Christ look like.

  155. And I want to say this, never let

  156. Hallmark or Hollywood be louder than

  157. your Bible.

  158. Man, I almost started preaching right

  159. there.

  160. >> And I mean, it's too easy for us because

  161. we have so much information and media

  162. coming at us trying to tell the story.

  163. And if I was the enemy, I would want to

  164. get in that narrative to mess you up.

  165. Amen.

  166. >> And so I want to preach today kind of

  167. the raw truth behind the Christmas

  168. story.

  169. Man, we see that beautiful manger, the

  170. silent night, the presence of the

  171. angels. But I got to say, when I read

  172. the Christmas story, I don't see a

  173. Hallmark card. I see a mess.

  174. Today, I want to give you five ws. When.

  175. Five ws of heaven invading earth.

  176. Number one is when God moves into your

  177. mass. Say into. Luke chapter 2 and verse

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  178. 6

  179. says this. And while they were there,

  180. the time came for her to give birth. And

  181. she gave birth to her firstborn son and

  182. wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid

  183. him in a manger because there was no

  184. place for them in the inn.

  185. I want to look at the mess just for a

  186. minute. Uh let's paint the picture. This

  187. is a 13year-old. Most commentators say

  188. between 12 and 14. roughly a 13-year-old

  189. young lady that was a virgin.

  190. And now she's pregnant and she's

  191. traveling with Joseph, not the father,

  192. right? Uh it's kind of a mess. They walk

  193. from Nazareth to Bethlehem. You guys,

  194. that's about 80 miles

  195. walking. Did I mention she's in third

  196. trimester? Anyone in here have kids?

  197. >> Third trimester. Uh, and I don't know if

  198. you know this, but uh, we have snow this

  199. time of year. They don't have snow. This

  200. is desert, right? Yeah. Maybe even some

  201. palm trees happening over there. You

  202. know what I mean? And so 80 miles,

  203. that's uh, about from here to Fischers,

  204. Indiana. Anyone want to be third

  205. trimester and walk to IKEA with us?

  206. I mean, for the guys Cabelas, right? I

  207. might walk 80 miles for Cabelas. I don't

  208. know. There's some cool stuff in that

  209. place.

  210. They said it's about a 7 to 10 day

  211. journey and uh my goodness uh this is

  212. not the uh classic nativity that I think

  213. of

  214. we saw I just imagine Mary and Joseph

  215. funny video but there's a little bit of

  216. truth behind this right of going man I

  217. got a pregnant wife here I mean this

  218. kind of feels like a mess we made it

  219. here now there's no play where where do

  220. we go

  221. and so they find the barn

  222. the king of kings

  223. was born in a barn, not a palace,

  224. not a hospital, not even a decent hotel

  225. room

  226. with stable in a stable with animals.

  227. And I got to say this, animal smells.

  228. >> Yeah, this was not the glamorous

  229. Hallmark setting that we think about.

  230. And I want to say this, this was not

  231. God's plan B.

  232. This was not God's plan B. This was

  233. strategic and intentional with purpose.

  234. You think this was some accident like,

  235. "Oh my goodness, she prayed we have a

  236. place to stay. What are we going to I

  237. guess we'll sleep out here at the bar?"

  238. There was none of that.

  239. >> God from heaven ordained their steps to

  240. a specific location at a specific time

  241. for Jesus to be born. This wasn't God

  242. scrambling because the Bethlehem

  243. Marriott was booked.

  244. I don't think they had Marriotts back

  245. then.

  246. Write this down. God chose mess over

  247. magnificence.

  248. God chose mess

  249. over magnificence.

  250. Sometimes because of the way that we

  251. view Christianity,

  252. we get it in our mind that God only

  253. shows up in the clean places,

  254. in the pretty places or the put together

  255. places. And when we see the reality of

  256. the birth of Christ, we see the exact

  257. opposite.

  258. The stable wasn't a setback. It was a

  259. setup.

  260. It was a setup. And God specializes in

  261. showing up really where we least expect

  262. him.

  263. And when you least expect him, God shows

  264. up in the mess.

  265. when heaven comes to earth and invades

  266. earth and I don't even want to uh

  267. hyperspiritualize that term. When God

  268. shows up in your life, the mess becomes

  269. the message. Amen.

  270. Uh where were you before Jesus came into

  271. your life? You were a mess. I don't know

  272. about what your salvation is, but my I

  273. was a dumpster fire of a of a mess

  274. before Jesus showed up in my life. And

  275. aren't you thankful that Jesus didn't uh

  276. go look for the people that had it all

  277. together, that had things figured out,

  278. but he found you

  279. >> in your mass

  280. >> and said, "That's the one right there

  281. >> that I want to bless. That's the

  282. location."

  283. >> I think of the spots,

  284. the physical locations that God spoke to

  285. me.

  286. doing foxhole prayers in my sin life

  287. where God would show up. God shows up in

  288. the mess.

  289. And my experience is that God invades

  290. our worst moments, not our best

  291. performance.

  292. In my weakness, he's made strong.

  293. And I have the opportunity

  294. to walk in humility and recognize my own

  295. weaknesses, which makes an allowance for

  296. God to show up.

  297. Or in my own mind, my own flesh, I can

  298. prepare and show up and perform.

  299. And God sitting on the sidelines going,

  300. "Man, I sure would like to help you out

  301. here.

  302. I've done it preaching before. It's a

  303. horrible feeling.

  304. That's an absolutely horrible feeling.

  305. And how many times we we think we have

  306. the perfect plan and the perfect thing.

  307. We get it all figured out and and we've

  308. rehearsed it in our head and you show up

  309. and it's an epic fail.

  310. >> I don't want my life to be like that.

  311. I want a heart of surrender and a heart

  312. of humility that says, "Man, God, I know

  313. that I I'm I'm a mess.

  314. And so I'm asking for you to do what

  315. only you can do." And number two for

  316. your notes is when nobody's

  317. carry the news.

  318. And dig a little bit deeper into the

  319. reality of the Christmas story. Luke

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  320. chapter 2

  321. and verse 8. In that same region, there

  322. were shepherds. Say shepherds.

  323. >> Shepherds.

  324. >> There were shepherds out in the field

  325. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  326. And an angel of the Lord appeared to

  327. them and the glory of the Lord shone

  328. around them. They were greatly afraid.

  329. And the angel said to them, "Fear not,

  330. for behold, I bring you good news of

  331. great joy that will be for all the

  332. people."

  333. Isn't that good news?

  334. We take that scripture and we write

  335. songs around it and we and we build

  336. plays around and all this stuff. But I

  337. got to tell you, these are some simple

  338. farmers,

  339. some shepherds. And it says that the

  340. angels appear to them and the glory of

  341. God shone around them and it says they

  342. were afraid.

  343. Uh yeah, completely freaked out, right?

  344. We're out here in the middle of the

  345. night uh with our sheep and all of a

  346. sudden angels are speaking to us in the

  347. glory. Yeah, we're freaked out.

  348. Yeah. Yeah. I just picture these dudes

  349. being an absolute mess,

  350. >> you know? And if this would be like one

  351. of those things like if my buddy wasn't

  352. standing here with me and saw it like

  353. nobody would believe this mess, right?

  354. And here here's what I want you to

  355. understand. Uh the shepherds were not

  356. influencers. They were not politicians.

  357. They were not religious leaders in the

  358. culture. They were ignored.

  359. Uh let me dig a little deeper. Shepherds

  360. in first century Palestine uh were not

  361. the romantic figures we see in Christmas

  362. plays.

  363. They were the outcast.

  364. They were really socially considered

  365. unclean.

  366. Unclean.

  367. You guys know I grew up in the country,

  368. right? I know about some unclean

  369. farmers.

  370. Yeah. Man, I had a really close friend

  371. of mine went through all the way through

  372. school and when we turned 16, man, he he

  373. got a brand new truck. He was a farm

  374. kid, right? And so some of those farmers

  375. got money. We we we didn't have a whole

  376. lot of that farm. I grew up brand new

  377. truck, brand new Dodge truck. It was the

  378. brand new body style when the cool ones

  379. came out. Yeah. And I'm not even a Dodge

  380. fan, but they were a cool looking truck.

  381. And he he only had that thing just a

  382. couple of weeks and I remember hopping

  383. in it with him and it smells like a hog

  384. farm.

  385. >> I mean, just disgusting. And you know, I

  386. think his grandpa bought it for him. he

  387. uses on the farm. And he would actually

  388. ask to borrow our vehicles to go on a

  389. date because he was embarrassed of the

  390. way that his truck smelled.

  391. Ah, stinky old farmer.

  392. No matter how hard you try to clean

  393. pig stuff out of your truck, it still

  394. smells like pig stuff.

  395. >> Yeah. This is the shepherds here.

  396. Th this is this is the people that God

  397. chose to speak to with angelic hosts.

  398. Nobody's carry the news.

  399. They were considered unclean. They

  400. couldn't testify in court

  401. because their word was untrusted.

  402. They were the bottom of the social

  403. ladder.

  404. Religious people avoided them.

  405. Respectable people look down on them.

  406. I'll say this. They were the last people

  407. that you would invite to a royal birth.

  408. >> God putting on human flesh, showing up

  409. here on earth. I mean, this is the last

  410. people that you would invite. If I'm

  411. putting together the the list, man, I'm

  412. I'm going for the elite. I'm going for

  413. the powerful. I'm going for the

  414. influential. I want some movers and

  415. shakers here for this for this thing

  416. because the King of Kings and the Lord

  417. of Lords is about to enter earth for the

  418. very first time. And God says, "I don't

  419. want any of them. I want the old stinky

  420. farmers from the field to come and I'm

  421. going to send my angels to speak to

  422. them. I don't know who you are, but I

  423. was a shepherd. I was a stinky old mess

  424. out in my sin life doing what I did. And

  425. God spoke to me and said, "Hey, there

  426. there's one here that I want you to

  427. receive. His name is Jesus."

  428. That's what God does.

  429. That's who God chooses.

  430. He didn't choose the priests, the

  431. Pharisees,

  432. politicians, the powerful.

  433. He chose the powerless,

  434. the overlooked,

  435. and the forgotten.

  436. 1 Corinthians chapter 1 really is one of

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  437. my favorite scriptures. Verse 27

  438. says, "But God," say, "God,

  439. >> God chose what is foolish in the world

  440. to shame the wise."

  441. The very first time I heard that

  442. scripture, I said, "Man, I finally

  443. qualify for something."

  444. Because my my emotional and spiritual

  445. resume doesn't qualify for much. But I

  446. heard that one. I go, "My goodness, I

  447. got a little now I'm looking for some

  448. wise people. I'm going to shame you wise

  449. people cuz I am a fool for Jesus." Amen.

  450. >> God chose

  451. what is foolish in the world to shame

  452. the wise. God chose what is weak in the

  453. world to shame the strong. God chose

  454. what is low and despised in the world,

  455. even things that are not, to bring to

  456. nothing things that are.

  457. Write this down. Your past doesn't

  458. determine your invitation.

  459. That's good news for somebody in the

  460. house of God today.

  461. Your past doesn't determine your

  462. invitation.

  463. God could have sent the angels to

  464. Caesar's palace.

  465. Could have announced Jesus's birth to

  466. the religious elite in Jerusalem.

  467. Could have chosen the influential.

  468. Instead, he chose the shepherds.

  469. Why?

  470. Because the gospel is not for the

  471. qualified.

  472. It's for the disqualified.

  473. Let me say that a little louder for the

  474. people in the back.

  475. The gospel is not for the qualified.

  476. It's for the disqualified.

  477. When heaven came down, nobody's carried

  478. the news.

  479. I love the song lyrics. Maybe you've

  480. heard it. Says, "I'm just a nobody

  481. trying to tell everybody all about a

  482. somebody who saved my soul."

  483. First time I heard those, I like, man, I

  484. like that.

  485. cuz that's me. I'm just a nobody. I'm

  486. just trying to tell everybody about this

  487. about this somebody that saved my soul.

  488. Can I say this? If you think you're a

  489. somebody in the presence of God, you

  490. have missed the mark.

  491. I I'm just a nobody.

  492. Just a nobody.

  493. God's invitation list

  494. looks nothing like ours.

  495. We have this tendency to invite the

  496. impressive.

  497. God invites the struggling, the broken.

  498. We invite the successful.

  499. We invite the put together. God invites

  500. the falling apart. Can I challenge you a

  501. little bit to use the same ideology

  502. as God inviting you to recognize, man, I

  503. was a mess. I was broken, busted,

  504. disgusted. Couldn't be trusted when God

  505. found me. And and I want to use that

  506. same heart as I'm inviting people into

  507. my world,

  508. >> into my life, because I don't sometimes

  509. we get cleaned up and we start thinking

  510. that we're somebody

  511. when Jesus is the one that made us

  512. anything.

  513. >> Hallelujah.

  514. >> And then we start we get in our little

  515. religious elite circles.

  516. I was in a legalistic church once.

  517. Yeah. Couldn't couldn't be around those

  518. non-Christian people.

  519. Yeah.

  520. Won't even go to a restaurant that has a

  521. bar in it.

  522. Yeah. Get saved. That's what I say. We

  523. don't We can't be out there smoking

  524. cigarettes. Oh,

  525. how dare them. I smoked for a decade.

  526. Right.

  527. Glad God delivered me from cigarettes.

  528. >> Hallelujah.

  529. Who are you inviting into your world?

  530. Let's let's use the template of God and

  531. say, "Who is it?" Now, now, now, if

  532. you're tempted by that or that's going

  533. to mess you up in your salvation with

  534. God, you got to use some wisdom there.

  535. But can I say that Jesus hung out with

  536. sinners?

  537. >> They accused him of being a drunkard and

  538. a glutton. Why? Because he was hanging

  539. around drunks and fat people.

  540. So if you don't take anything else today

  541. after you leave here, go find some

  542. drunks and some fat people and hang out

  543. with them and tell them about Jesus.

  544. Amen.

  545. >> Hallelujah.

  546. >> Told you. I think it's the socks, man.

  547. >> Yeah.

  548. What's your invitation list look like?

  549. You might be sitting in here going,

  550. "Man, I think I'm the mess."

  551. >> Bible says you're exactly who God's

  552. looking for.

  553. >> And the shepherds didn't get the

  554. invitation because they were good

  555. enough. They got the invitation because

  556. God is good.

  557. >> Here's what's beautiful. When the

  558. shepherds heard the news, they didn't

  559. stay in the field. Luke 2:15 says, 'When

    Luke 2:15

  560. the angels went away from them into

  561. heaven, the shepherd said to one

  562. another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem

  563. and see this thing that is that has

  564. happened, which the Lord has made known

  565. to us." And they went with haste and

  566. found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying

  567. in a manger.

  568. I think that's a word we need to bring

  569. back into culture is the word haste.

  570. They went with haste. They made haste.

  571. That means get up and go. That means

  572. hurry. That means there's an urgency.

  573. That's that's what you would use if if

  574. the house was on fire and we got to get

  575. out. We go with haste.

  576. They weren't sitting around.

  577. They worked through their fear of seeing

  578. what they saw. And now they said, "Hey,

  579. we we got to go, man. Let's let's go

  580. check this thing out." They went with

  581. haste. They didn't clean up first.

  582. clean the smell of animals off of them.

  583. Shepherds

  584. sleep with the sheep, eat with the

  585. sheep. I mean, they're out there for

  586. weeks and months on end away from I

  587. mean, these guys stunk. They didn't say,

  588. "Oh, man. We got to I got to go get my

  589. Sunday best on before I can I got to go

  590. buy a new sport coat,

  591. maybe a white one."

  592. >> Um, I just have to say the best sport

  593. coat in the house is Carrie Gerber in

  594. the back.

  595. Carrie, stand stand to your feet for a

  596. minute. Cameras, get over here to Carrie

  597. Gerber. Look at that SP. Can we just

  598. celebrate that?

  599. That coat is fabulous, man.

  600. They didn't go get their Christmas sport

  601. coat on.

  602. They didn't get permission from anyone.

  603. They didn't procrastinate and wait for a

  604. better time. Any procrastinators in the

  605. house? God said it 20 years ago. What

  606. are you waiting for?

  607. I've talked to these guys. Well, I felt

  608. called into the ministry back in 1976.

  609. And I go, "Well, why haven't you served

  610. in ministry then?

  611. I felt like God called me to preach and

  612. I've never been able to shake it." I'm

  613. like, "It's been 40 years, man.

  614. Might want to get going."

  615. These guys didn't say, "Well, God God

  616. appeared to us and spoke something to us

  617. and I don't know, we'll just hang out."

  618. I mean, they went with haste.

  619. God said it. I go

  620. learn a lot just from that.

  621. They went immediately

  622. just as they were. Look at your neighbor

  623. and say, "Come as you are."

  624. The first people to hear the heavenly

  625. host were the ones most ignored by the

  626. earthly host,

  627. the shepherds.

  628. And I want to say this, God doesn't just

  629. tolerate your brokenness. He targets it.

  630. He targets it.

  631. You're not an accident. You're not a

  632. mistake. You're not too far gone.

  633. You're exactly who heaven came for.

  634. Somebody needs to hear that. You're

  635. exactly who heaven came for. I think

  636. about Jesus, the good shepherd. He left

  637. the 99 to go find the one that was out

  638. in a mess.

  639. Amen.

  640. >> Your mess is on his heart. I think of

  641. that shepherd Jesus standing there. He

  642. my goodness, the 99 are there and he's

  643. saying, "Hey, hey, you guys are all

  644. together. You're you're going to be

  645. fine. You got each other, but but

  646. there's one that that's missing." And I

  647. and I think they're in a mess. MAYBE

  648. THEY'RE CAUGHT in a fence or in a valley

  649. or whatever. Maybe the wolf is around. I

  650. want to go find that one that's in the

  651. mess.

  652. Your mess is on his heart.

  653. That doesn't mean stay a mess so you can

  654. be on the heart of God.

  655. But let him turn your mess into the

  656. message.

  657. Here's what I want you to get in your

  658. heart today

  659. is that you are heaven's target, not

  660. heaven's afterthought.

  661. Number three for your notes. When

  662. silence

  663. sets up a shout.

  664. When silence sets up a shout. before

  665. this moment when Christ was born. Uh we

  666. have an estimated 400 years of God being

  667. silent.

  668. A lot of times we start the story with

  669. the birth of Christ. And what we don't

  670. realize is that there was a Jewish

  671. people awaiting their coming Messiah

  672. with all of these old prophecies.

  673. Many have said that Jesus coming

  674. fulfilled over 300 Old Testament

  675. prophecies of the coming Messiah.

  676. There was 400 years

  677. of nothing.

  678. Man, we used to sing that old song. It's

  679. four days late but right on time

  680. talking about Lazarus.

  681. Yeah.

  682. Can I say that God is always on time?

  683. 400 years there was no prophets, no

  684. miracles, just waiting. Say waiting.

  685. >> That baby's cry in that manger

  686. was the sound that shattered 400 years

  687. of silence.

  688. And maybe you've been in a season of

  689. silence. I've been there.

  690. Maybe you've been praying and it feels

  691. like heaven is quiet.

  692. Have you been there?

  693. I've been in that season, man, where I'm

  694. just pressing in and I feel like I need

  695. to hear from God and and my prayers feel

  696. like they're bouncing off the ceiling,

  697. coming right back at me.

  698. And I get it in my mind, the the

  699. timeline when I'm praying and I say,

  700. "God, let's go ahead and do that now."

  701. >> Yeah, let's go ahead and

  702. Can I say this? Don't do this to God in

  703. prayer.

  704. If you don't let your kids do it to you,

  705. don't you do it to God in prayer.

  706. >> My goodness.

  707. >> Yeah. I There's some different parenting

  708. styles out there, but if my kids came up

  709. and been like, "Hey, if you could get me

  710. that Xbox now," I'd be like, "So, you

  711. ain't never getting an Xbox now.

  712. Better go get a job, fool."

  713. Heard they hire 11 year olds at

  714. Chick-fil-A. Go check that out.

  715. >> Yeah,

  716. my timeline is not God's timeline.

  717. His thoughts are higher than my

  718. thoughts. His ways are higher than my

  719. ways.

  720. And my track record isn't good. Can I

  721. say this? Uh, when I get my own mind in

  722. it and I get my own initiatives in it,

  723. man, I I I I think it should happen

  724. right now.

  725. I think thousands of people should get

  726. saved today and come to church next

  727. Sunday

  728. >> right here.

  729. >> That's what I think. And I'm like, God,

  730. if we could if we could get that done,

  731. that'd be cool.

  732. >> I think that our new building should

  733. have been built yesterday.

  734. Yeah. So God, if you could just that $2

  735. million check show up, if we could get

  736. that done.

  737. Yeah. God says, "No, in the right time,

  738. I'll show up." And God likes to get me

  739. in position. I don't know about you, get

  740. me in position where I feel like I know

  741. nothing about nothing. I identify with

  742. Paul when he said, "I I I resolve to

  743. know nothing except Christ crucified. I

  744. don't know anything about anything. All

  745. I know is that I know him." And he's the

  746. one prompting. He's the one leading.

  747. He's the one ordaining each step. And

  748. and because of that, God's going to show

  749. up when God shows up and do things that

  750. no human can do.

  751. >> Can I say this? God's silence is not his

  752. absence.

  753. It's his alignment.

  754. Silence for 400 years before the birth

  755. of Christ.

  756. He was setting the stage. He was

  757. positioning the players. He was

  758. preparing the world for a shout of

  759. praise when their Messiah comes to

  760. earth. Zechariah 2:10, an Old Testament

    Zechariah 2:10

  761. uh word says, "Shout and be glad,

  762. daughter of daughter of Zion, for I am

  763. coming and I will live among you,

  764. declares the Lord."

  765. 400 years before Jesus ever came. I've

  766. had times when God has spoke to me and I

  767. knew it was God to go do this thing and

  768. I'm going all right let's go let's go

  769. and God says

  770. not right now and I'm going but why not

  771. now I mean this is a good thing you

  772. showed it and I want to I want to can

  773. Dad please can we just go

  774. he says no I'll show you when

  775. I'm still holding on to things that God

  776. spoke to me years ago that I know that I

  777. know that I know that God has shown me.

  778. And I'm still waiting.

  779. I'm still waiting.

  780. I'm still waiting. There's some unsaved

  781. loved ones that I know are going to get

  782. saved, but I'm still waiting.

  783. I'm still waiting.

  784. Some prophecies to be fulfilled.

  785. Your silent season is not your final

  786. season. It's God setting you up for a

  787. shout.

  788. Silence of God is not the absence of

  789. God. Galatians 4:4

    Galatians 4:4

  790. says this,

  791. "But when the fullness of time has

  792. come,"

  793. oh my goodness,

  794. the fullness of time,

  795. the fullness of time had come, God sent

  796. forth his son to redeem those who were

  797. under the law.

  798. Here's the biggest when that I want to

  799. give you today. Number four is when a

  800. savior takes your place.

  801. When a savior takes your place.

  802. I give you a little bit of a theme that

  803. we see in the Bible and creation. The

  804. Bible says that the earth was without

  805. form. It was dark. And one translator uh

  806. says that it was chaos. And the Hebrew

  807. really means that the earth was chaotic.

  808. There was chaos and God stepped in and

  809. brought order to the chaos

  810. and he did it with a word spoken. That's

  811. a big God.

  812. Creation account is bringing order to

  813. the chaos. Christ being born to live and

  814. to die is God again bringing order to

  815. the chaos.

  816. When you accept Christ and through him

  817. become born again, God steps into your

  818. life and brings order to the chaos,

  819. turning the mess

  820. into the message.

  821. Jesus Christ became the substitute

  822. to make the payment for your sin so you

  823. don't have to

  824. to make the payment for your sin.

  825. You ever been You ever just had that

  826. bill that that you couldn't couldn't

  827. swing it and man it's it's hanging out

  828. there and the it's just too big. It's

  829. just not even realistic. You ever I

  830. don't know if you've been broke before.

  831. I've been broke before, right? and and

  832. that that bill coming and you just go,

  833. man, how how in the world, you know,

  834. that weight

  835. of not being able to make the payment.

  836. That weight is on the soul of a sinner

  837. because there is a payment to be had for

  838. your sin.

  839. And without Jesus, you don't have what

  840. it takes in the bank account to make

  841. that payment. The wages of sin is

  842. >> death.

  843. But Jesus came as the substitute. And

  844. and in that spiritual realm, Jesus steps

  845. in and says, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa."

  846. He must have what? What did he say? The

  847. Samaritan card.

  848. >> Samaritan Express.

  849. >> Yeah.

  850. Got me a sugar daddy in the spirit.

  851. Daddy steps in and says, "Whoa, whoa. I

  852. got the bill. I got the bill."

  853. Yeah.

  854. to make payment

  855. for your sin so you don't have to. I

  856. just want to say the Christmas story

  857. isn't a Hallmark story.

  858. It's God saying, "I'll come into your

  859. mess.

  860. I'll live and I'll die for you

  861. so you don't have to." It's God stepping

  862. in and saying, "I'll take your place."

  863. And he was your substitute before you

  864. even knew you needed one.

  865. John 1:29 says, "The next day he saw

    John 1:29

  866. Jesus coming toward him and said,

  867. "Behold, the lamb of God takes away the

  868. sin of the world."

  869. Number five in your notes,

  870. when your mess

  871. becomes his message.

  872. I think about the word mess

  873. and all you have to do is add three

  874. letters a ge for the mess to become the

  875. message

  876. for God to step in and make payment for

  877. you right into your mess. Jesus comes

  878. and makes payment. And the Bible says in

  879. Revelation that they overcame the evil

  880. one. They overcame him by the blood of

  881. the lamb and say and

  882. >> the word of their testimony.

  883. That's how you overcome the enemy in

  884. your life through the blood of Jesus

  885. Christ making payment for your sin and

  886. through the word of your testimony that

  887. your mess becomes his message that hey I

  888. I was lost. I was hurting. I was broken.

  889. I I had depra. Whatever your test,

  890. whatever your story is that you share

  891. that mess now through Christ as his

  892. message.

  893. >> I was saved for a few years,

  894. went back, got my high school diploma.

  895. Tell you, I was a mess.

  896. Got called in the ministry, went to

  897. Bible college. Amazed that they even

  898. accepted me at a college. made me take a

  899. special test to even get me into the

  900. college.

  901. I wasn't a dummy. I just never went to

  902. school in high school, right? Took the

  903. test, got in serving God, serving in my

  904. local church, and really fell in love

  905. with God. And from the mess that I was

  906. in, I had the long hair and the and just

  907. the mess. I was just a mess. And now I'm

  908. saved and I got the haircut. I'm cleaned

  909. up. I I started I was a drug addict,

  910. right? So, I started doing normal things

  911. that normal people do like eating food

  912. >> and sleeping, you know. So, I'm looking

  913. a whole lot better than what I did last

  914. year. And I would run into people, they

  915. would see me and they go, "Whoa, what in

  916. the world happened to you?"

  917. I go, "Well, I got a job. I'm going to

  918. college now." Yeah.

  919. I go I go through the list. Look, look

  920. at my ride, man. I got I got some

  921. greens. I got some money now. Hey, you

  922. know, I started I and me and I and I was

  923. not giving God the glory.

  924. Do you know in that pride I backslid,

  925. dropped out of Bible college and ended

  926. up on a six-month run back in my sin

  927. life.

  928. Can I tell you that making his your mass

  929. his message is the path to victory

  930. >> to live in that humility.

  931. first started preaching, I didn't know

  932. how to accept a compliment. People say,

  933. "Good job." And I'm like, "I'm not

  934. taking credit for that.

  935. Praise God." Because I know what I am

  936. without him. I'm not a preacher. I'm a

  937. train wreck.

  938. Let your mess become his message. The

  939. Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5,

  940. "Therefore, we are ambassadors for

  941. Christ,

  942. God making his appeal through us.

  943. You're an ambassador for Jesus

  944. and God wants to speak through you

  945. to hurting people.

  946. Christmas story isn't just what happened

  947. 2,000 years ago. It's what's happening

  948. in you right now.

  949. What's God doing through you today?

  950. Yeah.

  951. just a nobody

  952. trying to tell everybody about somebody

  953. that saved my soul.

  954. Matthew chapter 5, Jesus said, "You are

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  955. the light of the world."

  956. He said, "Let your light shine before

  957. others."

  958. Spurgeon said this. He said, "God's

  959. grace is most clearly seen when it

  960. shines in the darkest places."

  961. Don't just let your light shine on

  962. Sunday morning when we're in this place.

  963. Oh, I've watched the Sunday Christians.

  964. Sunday morning, I I just love Jesus. God

  965. bless you. Bless you, brother. Bless

  966. you, sister. Oh, yeah.

  967. He didn't know I saw you at Meyer on

  968. Tuesday.

  969. Cursing at your kid in public.

  970. He He didn't know that I heard the

  971. story. Can I say this? Let your light

  972. shine before men.

  973. >> Not just saved on Sunday.

  974. I'm also saved on Monday,

  975. Tuesday, and Wednesday.

  976. Not saying we're perfect.

  977. You might have a moment, a mess up, a

  978. hangup, and that's okay. Pick yourself

  979. up and keep moving.

  980. I just want my mass to be his message.

  981. I just want to tell the world about this

  982. Jesus that saved me.

  983. Maybe you're sitting here and you're

  984. going, "Man, I

  985. my life's a mess. I identify with that."

  986. Congratulations.

  987. You're a candidate for a miracle today

  988. because you're the target

  989. of the love of God.

  990. Maybe God spoke to you to

  991. go into the ministry, whatever that is,

  992. and you just feel disqualified.

  993. Maybe just in life, period, you feel

  994. disqualified.

  995. We had four kids in four years.

  996. That was a miracle in itself.

  997. It

  998. >> all happened so quick and it was a

  999. season that I had workaholic tendencies.

1000. So there there was this times we just we

1001. sat in our living room and there's these

1002. four little people and I'm like where

1003. did all these little people come from?

1004. At number four, my dad did get with me

1005. and say, "You know how that happens,

  1006. don't you?" Yeah. Yeah.

1007. But I remember looking at my children

1008. and I've had this a few times going, I

  1009. don't feel qualified

  1010. to parent you

1011. different seasons of their life. Now

1012. they're getting into teenagers, teenage

1013. years. And I look at teenagers sometimes

  1014. and I go, I don't know if I'm qualified,

1015. especially teenage girls. Some of the

  1016. stuff they're asking me, I'm like, I

  1017. don't even know what we're talking

  1018. about.

  1019. >> Don't have a clue. You're really going

1020. to have to talk to your mom on that one.

1021. You ever get a job and you just don't

  1022. feel qualified?

  1023. Feeling disqualified. Congratulations.

1024. It's exactly where the king likes to set

  1025. up his throne

  1026. right in the mass.

1027. I want you to stand to your feet all

  1028. over this house.

1029. I'm going to ask our worship team to

  1030. join me up here.

1031. The challenge I want to give you today

1032. is to not just admire the message, but

1033. become it. We we look at the Christmas

1034. message and sometimes we glamorize it

1035. and we we look at it through the

1036. Hallmark lens. Can I tell you not just

1037. to admire the message, but become the

  1038. message of Jesus Christ.

1039. And if you're in this space and you're

  1040. going, "Man, my life's a mess and I

1041. don't even know where to get started."

1042. Today can be the day of salvation for

1043. you. That you can invite the creator of

1044. the universe into your mass.

1045. Bring order to your chaos.

  1046. What a Christmas present

1047. to give your life to Jesus. Today

  1048. you celebrate Christmas,

1049. the birth of the savior

1050. and with the savior in your heart.

1051. Let's pray. Father, we thank you Lord

  1052. for salvation.

1053. Father, I pray now over every soul in

  1054. this room.

1055. God, we're all in different places,

1056. different thoughts and different things,

1057. Father, but I thank you for meeting each

1058. of us right where we sit. in this moment

  1059. in time

1060. where we are in life. Father, I pray God

1061. that nothing would hinder anyone in this

1062. room from receiving you in fullness.

1063. Praise you, Jesus. We're going to

1064. continue in prayer for just a moment

1065. with eyes closed. If that's you this

1066. morning, if you say, "Pastor, pray for

1067. me. I I need to give my life to Jesus."

1068. I'm not going to embarrass you this

1069. morning, but would you just lift your

1070. hand towards heaven and say, "Pastor,

  1071. pray for me."

1072. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

1073. Praise you, Jesus. You can put your hand

1074. down. There's hands going up around the

1075. room. Praise you, Jesus. Father, we love

  1076. you today.

1077. >> We thank you that that today is the day

1078. of salvation, the day of freedom, the

1079. day of reconciliation, God, that you can

1080. receive back unto yourself your

  1081. children.

1082. Praise you, Jesus. And father, I pray

1083. for those that lifted their hand and

1084. said, "Today is the day.

1085. Father, I pray for authentic, divine,

  1086. miraculous salvation.

  1087. Praise you, Jesus.

1088. Thank you, Lord." Saints, let's just all

1089. pray this prayer together. And if you

1090. lifted your hand, pray this prayer. Uh

1091. this isn't a surefire way. You just got

1092. to believe it in your heart and pray the

1093. prayer. And the Bible says you'll be

1094. saved. Can we pray this together? Say,

  1095. "Father in heaven,

  1096. I receive you now.

  1097. >> I receive you.

  1098. >> I receive Jesus

  1099. >> I receive

  1100. >> as payment

  1101. >> for my sin.

  1102. >> for my s

  1103. >> I confess with my mouth

  1104. >> that Jesus

  1105. >> Jesus

1106. >> is now Lord of my life

1107. >> now Lord of my life

1108. >> and according to your word

1109. >> according to your word

  1110. >> I'm saved

  1111. >> I'm healed

  1112. >> I'm delivered

  1113. >> and I'm set free

  1114. >> I'm set free

  1115. >> in Jesus name

1116. >> Amen. Can we celebrate the work of the

  1117. Lord today?

1118. Now, I need to pray for the rest of you

  1119. cuz y'all are a mess.

  1120. Hallelujah.

1121. Thank you, Lord. Praise you, Jesus.

1122. Father, I pray for every soul in this

1123. room, God, that you would continue to

1124. meet us in our mass and that we would

1125. continue to shout your message.

1126. Father, I thank you God for the work

1127. that you're doing in hearts and minds in

  1128. this fellowship of believers.

1129. Now bless each one I pray in Jesus name.

1130. Amen. Our prayer team is going to come

1131. forward. We're going to close the

1132. service uh with worship. If you need

1133. prayer for anything, I want to invite

1134. you to an altar of prayer and let us

1135. pray with you. But I want to say this.

1136. Merry Christmas and God bless you.
