  5. [applause and music]

  6. >> Well, good morning everybody.

  7. Um, I guess it's cheesy joke Sunday.

  8. >> I'm not a good joke teller. Uh, so the

  9. man said to God,

  10. "What's a million years to you?" And God

  11. said, "A second."

  12. So the man said to God, "What's a

  13. million dollars, too?"

  14. God said, "A penny."

  15. So the man said to God, "Can I please

  16. have a penny?"

  17. And God said in a second.

  18. >> So just keep waiting for your miracle.

  19. It's coming. Hey, I'm Dan. I'm one of

  20. the pastors here at Grace Summit Church.

  21. So good to see everybody. You made it

  22. through Christmas. You ought to give

  23. yourselves a round of applause for that.

  24. Uh some of you may be still going

  25. through it. I can see um Christmas is

  26. about family, right? And we love them.

  27. And then uh yeah, we're glad when it's

  28. over.

  29. And I can see some of you maybe are

  30. still sitting next to Never mind, never

  31. mind. [snorts] But uh just a couple more

  32. days and we'll be coming into a new

  33. year, the year of our Lord, 2026.

  34. And uh let's pray that that is the best

  35. year yet for you. Let's pray that's the

  36. year the Lord comes back. In fact, let's

  37. pray the Lord come back before New

  38. Year's. Wouldn't that be a blast?

  39. uh we wouldn't get to hear

  40. 1990s week, but we'd be with Jesus, so

  41. it would all be good. Uh I'm going to

  42. read a couple of verses out of Isaiah

    Isaiah 66:1

  43. 66,

  44. verses 1 and two specifically

  45. to launch today, and I didn't look at

  46. the clock in the first service, so I'm

  47. going to intentionally do that. I got so

  48. caught up in the message last service

  49. about halfway through, I was like, I

  50. have no idea how long it's been. Um, but

  51. we got out of here on time as you can

  52. see. And uh, we'll get you out of here

  53. on time. You'll beat the Baptist to the

  54. buffet, so don't get nervous.

  55. Isaiah 66 verse1, thus says the Lord,

  56. "Heaven is my throne, and earth is my

  57. foottool. Where is the house that you

  58. will build me, and where is the place of

  59. my rest? For all those things my hand

  60. has made, and all those things exist,

  61. says the Lord. But on this one will I

  62. look, on him who is poor and of a

  63. contrite spirit and who trembles at my

  64. word.

  65. What a powerful portion of scripture.

  66. We're going to unpack particularly verse

  67. two and in fact that is the title of the

  68. message on this one. Will I look? And

  69. we're going to consider a few people

  70. that God is looking people that meet

  71. those qualifications in a moment. But I

  72. didn't want to leave off verse one

  73. because God is essentially asking us

  74. where is this building that you build

  75. that you call the physical church.

  76. And God is looking at all of our

  77. structures and some are impressive.

  78. [snorts] My wife and I in September

  79. spent a couple of weeks in Germany and

  80. we saw some really really old churches.

  81. Uh, one was in downtown mines in the old

  82. city center, uh, which dated back to the

  83. Roman Empire. Just beautiful structures

  84. and you could go into this sanctuary and

  85. look around and I mean, literally

  86. breathtaking.

  87. And it would go as high as you could

  88. see. I mean, you had to really strain to

  89. even see the top of this church. And

  90. then another one, I think the oldest one

  91. we saw, there were two really old ones

  92. in the old section of Nerburgg, Germany,

  93. uh, which had been bombed, 90% of that

  94. area had been bombed out at the end of

  95. World War II. But there are a couple of

  96. churches still standing that were built

  97. in the 1300s

  98. in in a Gothic architecture type. And

  99. really, again, breathtaking, just

  100. beautiful. and the things that man has

  101. built. But God is looking at all of

  102. those buildings and this one that we're

  103. in. And he's saying, you know, that's

  104. not really what I'm after.

  105. You got the wood from me. You got the

  106. metal from me. You got the knowhow for

  107. me. There's really nothing you could

  108. build on this earth that God is like,

  109. "Wow, that is really something. I think

  110. I'll go to church there." [laughter]

  111. What God is looking for isn't a

  112. building. It's a particular kind of

  113. person.

  114. The woman at the well was told that God

  115. isn't going to dwell just in the temple

  116. in Jerusalem, nor in the hill of

  117. Samaria. But God is looking for those

  118. who worship in spirit and in truth.

  119. And God said here through Isaiah that

  120. the one I look on is the one who is of a

  121. contrite spirit and one who trembles at

  122. my word. I want to take you now over to

  123. the book of John and consider with you

  124. three people that the resurrected Christ

  125. appeared to. We are looking at a window

  126. of time of only 40 days.

  127. It's just a short window from the

  128. resurrection of Christ to the ascension

  129. of Christ. Just a 40-day window that

  130. we're looking at a few people and these

  131. are just a few of them that the

  132. resurrected Christ appeared to. 40 in

  133. the Bible is a number of uh preparation

  134. and transition.

  135. You'll see this in Moses's life. He

  136. spent 40 years as Pharaoh's son and then

  137. he got kind of uppidity one day and got

  138. himself in some trouble and became a

  139. fugitive for 40 years. But there on the

  140. back side of the desert, God was

  141. preparing him to be the leader of the

  142. Hebrew nation and to bring them out of

  143. bondage and into the promised land. We

  144. see the spies once they were in the in

  145. the wilderness, the spies went out and

  146. for 40 days they spied out what is

  147. called the promised land and they came

  148. back. This was a time of transition. It

  149. was meant to get them ready. It was

  150. meant to move them into the next season

  151. of their life. But those spies, you know

  152. the story probably came back, had a

  153. negative report and so God sentenced

  154. them one year for every day with that

  155. negative report. That's why you got to

  156. be careful about your attitude because

  157. one day can hold you up for a whole

  158. year.

  159. And if you read the story, God literally

  160. sentenced them one year for every day

  161. that they had that attitude. So they

  162. wandered in circles for 40 years. And

  163. then they went in and and so uh then we

  164. see Jesus for 40 days out in the

  165. wilderness after he had been baptized by

  166. John again transitioning and preparing

  167. because until that point Jesus hadn't

  168. done any miracles. He hadn't preached

  169. any sermons. He was just Jesus of

  170. Nazareth. Mary knew what the story was,

  171. but nobody else really knew him. And

  172. John looks at him and says, "Behold the

  173. lamb of God which takes away the sin of

  174. the world." And immediately the spirit

  175. led Jesus into the wilderness for 40

  176. days. He would come back and begin

  177. preaching the gospel message. The reason

  178. he came in the first place. I'm glad for

  179. Christmas. I'm glad for the baby Jesus.

  180. But I'm more glad for the reason he

  181. came.

  182. >> That he came to seek and save that which

  183. was lost. And so 40 is a a time of

  184. transition. And this is a 40-day period

  185. again from the resurrection to the

  186. ascension. We first come to a woman

  187. named Mary. We pick it up in John 20:1.

    John 20:1

  188. But Mary stood outside the t by the tomb

  189. weeping. And as she wept, she stooped

  190. down and looked into the tomb. And she

  191. saw two angels in white sitting, one at

  192. the head and the other at the feet where

  193. the body of Jesus had lain. Then they

  194. said to her, "Woman, why are you

  195. weeping?"

  196. She said to them, "Because they've taken

  197. away my Lord, and I do not know where

  198. they've laid him." Now, when she had

  199. said this, she turned around and saw

  200. Jesus standing there and did not know

  201. that it was Jesus. Isn't that something?

  202. Looking right at him and can't see him.

  203. Verse 15, then Jesus said to her,

  204. "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are

  205. you seeking?"

  206. She supposing him to be the gardener

  207. said to him, "Sir, if you've carried him

  208. away, tell me where you've laid him, and

  209. I will take him away."

  210. Jesus said to her, "Mary."

  211. She turned and said to him, "Raboni,"

  212. which is to say, "Teacher,

  213. on this one will I look, Isaiah said,

  214. God said through Isaiah, I would submit

  215. to you on this one God looks."

  216. The one with a past, that's Mary.

  217. Mary, Mark tells us, was the very first

  218. person that that the resurrected Christ

  219. ever appeared to. Isn't that something?

  220. Of all the people that he could have

  221. appeared to, if I were Jesus, I'd have

  222. gone to Pilate's house.

  223. >> I'd have been like, "Yo, remember me?"

  224. [laughter]

  225. That's what's up.

  226. But Jesus goes to Mary out of whom Mark

  227. tells us he had cast seven devils.

  228. The girl had issues.

  229. God loves people with issues.

  230. She had a past.

  231. You have a past.

  232. I was thinking of one man after I

  233. preached one time that came up to me and

  234. said, "I gotta I gotta talk to you." And

  235. so we we met and we chatted and he told

  236. me, "Uh, I really want to serve Jesus.

  237. I'm really serious about this thing. I

  238. gave my life to him, but I'm a bank

  239. robber and I'm wanted by the FBI."

  240. And I said, "Yeah,

  241. sure you are."

  242. And so he convinced me enough to call

  243. the FBI in Grand Rapids, Michigan. And

  244. sure enough, they were very interested

  245. in talking to this young man.

  246. He had robbed uh three or four banks, I

  247. believe, and they were going to dispatch

  248. agents to come get him. And I said,

  249. "Look, can I bring him?"

  250. And they said, "Okay." Reluctantly. And

  251. so I, as his pastor, was allowed to

  252. drive him to to the FBI building and and

  253. to walk in. And I had another guy with

  254. me. And this guy, this is a side note,

  255. it's really of no consequence, but I had

  256. another guy with me that was on fire for

  257. Jesus. And so we get up and the elevator

  258. opens and there's these two armed FBI

  259. agents in front of us. And we got this

  260. fugitive with us. And my friend, his

  261. name was John, who was on fire for

  262. Jesus, was just like, "Hey, do you guys

  263. know Jesus?"

  264. And I was just like,

  265. "There's a time for everything under

  266. heaven.

  267. And I could just see that these people

  268. were not amused

  269. nor even interested in what he had to

  270. say. And the guy was taken into custody.

  271. He was serious about Jesus, but he had a

  272. past.

  273. And his past

  274. dictated that he needed to face his

  275. past. And and coming to Jesus is not

  276. that your past just disappears. I'm not

  277. saying that. There was another woman

  278. that I ministered to in jail and then uh

  279. actually went to court with her and the

  280. reason she was in court is for

  281. abandonment of her child. She was a meth

  282. addict and when she gave birth to her

  283. child, she as soon as they took the baby

  284. out of the room to tend to it, she

  285. bolted from the hospital and never came

  286. back. Went out to chase after her drugs.

  287. She had a past and she had to face the

  288. consequences of that past.

  289. But don't misunderstand God's grace and

  290. forgiveness and mercy with consequences.

  291. Consequences are consequences.

  292. But God's grace is with you through

  293. those consequences.

  294. And Mary was a girl who had the the

  295. reputation as the one whom Jesus cast

  296. seven devils out of.

  297. She had issues. And you have issues.

  298. Now, those of you that just in your mind

  299. answered what I just said with, "No, I

  300. don't.

  301. Your issue is you.

  302. >> And so we all have something in common

  303. with her. Some severe, some maybe not as

  304. severe or we don't think they're as

  305. severe, but we all have a past.

  306. And there's some interesting parallels

  307. with what happened here. Because first

  308. of all, Mary was the first. I think that

  309. was by design. I think, you know, Jesus

  310. is like, "Let me go get that one that

  311. had the reputation that has all the

  312. baggage that has, you know, they talk

  313. about her around the corners and, you

  314. know, everybody looks at her kind of

  315. crosseyed and and she can't seem to

  316. outlive her pad. Let me go to her first

  317. and he reveals himself and he first

  318. calls her woman."

  319. And it's in a garden. Did you know that

  320. the tomb was a garden tomb? It was in a

  321. garden literally. That's why she thought

  322. this is the gardener.

  323. H reminds me of another garden and

  324. another woman.

  325. Way back in Genesis 2, there was another

  326. woman who we know her as Eve, but

  327. actually in Genesis 2, you don't even

  328. see her name Eve. It's just that woman,

  329. the woman. And the woman said, and the

  330. devil said, and the woman said, and the

  331. woman

  332. failed in the garden, and she was

  333. stripped of her identity in the garden,

  334. and she fell into sin in the garden.

  335. Isn't it ironic that Jesus comes to

  336. another woman in a garden and calls her

  337. woman?

  338. Genesis 3:15 is the very first prophecy

    Genesis 3:15

  339. in the Bible. And it talks about how the

  340. seed of the woman would crush the head

  341. of the serpent. I love that prophecy.

  342. This is that being fulfilled.

  343. Jesus is the seed of another woman named

  344. Mary. Are you tracking with me this

  345. morning? And he has crushed by being

  346. crucified, buried, and rising again on

  347. the third day. He has crushed the head

  348. of the serpent. and he's there to talk

  349. about it with a woman.

  350. And then

  351. when she's puzzled about who he even is,

  352. he calls her Mary.

  353. Mary means beloved.

  354. Isaiah 43 and verse one says, "Fear not,

  355. for I have redeemed you. I have called

  356. you by your name.

  357. You are mine.

  358. I didn't call you by your behavior. I

  359. didn't call you by your label. I didn't

  360. call you by what people say about you. I

  361. didn't call you by your criminal

  362. history. I didn't call you by any of

  363. that. I called you by your name.

  364. [clears throat]

  365. And he calls Mary, who had been

  366. previously addressed as the woman, by

  367. her name.

  368. One of the things the devil will try to

  369. do

  370. when you have a past is steal your

  371. identity and make you think that you are

  372. what you did. But what you did is what

  373. you did. It's not who you are. It

  374. doesn't define you.

  375. Somebody needs to receive that this

  376. morning

  377. because y'all y'all did stuff. Come on.

  378. Don't be looking so holy. Yeah, we'll

  379. ask the people sitting next to you what

  380. you did if we have to. You did stuff.

  381. And and we are not defined by what we

  382. did,

  383. but by the fact that he's redeemed us

  384. and he calls us beloved.

  385. Next, I would like to take you to a man

  386. named Thomas. Still in John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  387. now in verse 24. Now Thomas

  388. called the twin, one of the twel was not

  389. with them when Jesus came.

  390. The other disciples therefore said to

  391. him, "We've seen the Lord."

  392. So he said to them, "Yeah, right.

  393. Unless I see his hands in his hands the

  394. print of the nails and put my finger

  395. into the print of the nails and put my

  396. hand in his side, I will not believe."

  397. And after 8 days, his disciples were

  398. again inside and Thomas with them. Jesus

  399. came, the doors being shut, and stood in

  400. the midst and said, "Peace to you."

  401. He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger

  402. here and look at my hands and reach your

  403. hand here and put it into my side. Do

  404. not be unbelieving, but believing." And

  405. Thomas answered and said to him, "My

  406. Lord [snorts] and my God.

  407. on this one will he look the one with

  408. doubts.

  409. Have you ever doubted?

  410. Have you ever had a crisis of faith?

  411. I don't think you know what kind of

  412. faith you have until it's been

  413. challenged to the point where you are so

  414. confused and so broken and scratching

  415. your head like Thomas was like, "This

  416. doesn't make sense. I thought Jesus, the

  417. Messiah, we've heard it all of our

  418. lives, was going to come and be a

  419. military leader and break the chains of

  420. Rome off of us so that Israel could be a

  421. great nation again. That's what I

  422. thought. That was my expectations. And

  423. yet, I saw him crucified on a Roman

  424. cross.

  425. I saw him die.

  426. And now people are saying he's alive.

  427. And I just can't I can't wrap my head

  428. around that. His faith was in crisis.

  429. And so Jesus invites him in to the

  430. evidence.

  431. He says, "Touch me.

  432. Taste and see if the Lord is good. Try

  433. me and see

  434. if I'm not who I say I am."

  435. Those of you that are dealing with

  436. doubts, I challenge you. Yield yourself.

  437. Step into the evidence.

  438. There's lots of it.

  439. The empty tomb is in evidence.

  440. Even Jesus's enemies admitted that the

  441. tomb was empty. They tried to make up

  442. stories to explain it.

  443. There's a creed in 1 Corinthians 15 that

  444. was basically a news flash that scholars

  445. have dated to within months of the

  446. resurrection. And it says that Jesus

  447. died for our sins, was buried, rose

  448. again, and then started to appear to

  449. people.

  450. Cphus and the 12 and at one point over

  451. 500 people at one time. And he said most

  452. of them are still alive. If you want to

  453. go ask him about it,

  454. that's how we know the resurrection

  455. wasn't a legend that was built over

  456. time. That that dates to within months

  457. of the resurrection. People were

  458. testifying to the resurrected Christ

  459. that they had seen him.

  460. And so Thomas finally gets it

  461. when he sees him face to face. There was

  462. another man in crisis, John the Baptist.

  463. I referred to him earlier. He was

  464. baptizing there at the Jordan. He saw

  465. Jesus cross the hill. And he it was who

  466. said, "Behold the lamb of God which

  467. takes away the sin of the world." What a

  468. testimony.

  469. He knew that. He knew that he knew that

  470. he knew that this was the savior of the

  471. world. But John's circumstances had

  472. changed.

  473. And he finding himself in prison sends

  474. two of his followers to go ask Jesus,

  475. "Are you the coming one or should we

  476. look for somebody else?"

  477. I didn't think it'd go down like this. I

  478. didn't think I'd be in prison.

  479. I didn't think my life would turn out

  480. this way. I didn't think they would die

  481. of that disease or that cancer. I didn't

  482. think that she would leave me. I didn't

  483. think that he would betray me. Come on,

  484. somebody. Your expectations sometime

  485. sometimes can be shaken. And you're in a

  486. crisis of faith. And Jesus answer to

  487. that is touch me.

  488. Enter into the evidence. Look around

  489. you. Do you know that Jesus's life and

  490. death and burial and resurrection

  491. fulfilled no less than 300 prophecies?

  492. And if that isn't enough, look around at

  493. the great cloud of witnesses around you.

  494. People that have touched and encountered

  495. Christ and it changed their life.

  496. I whom I'm speaking to you was a was a

  497. full-fledged drug addict.

  498. There was no hope. I never thought I

  499. would get clean ever. I couldn't hold on

  500. to even 10 or $15. It would drive me

  501. right to the dope man's house. It was as

  502. if I was in chains that were invisible.

  503. I was in bondage.

  504. I was lost. AND JESUS SET ME FREE. And

  505. I'm not the only one.

  506. There's a cloud of witnesses both in

  507. heaven and sitting next to you that will

  508. testify Jesus is alive. Jesus can change

  509. you.

  510. >> You may not even know how to articulate

  511. it. I love the blind man. He said, "I

  512. don't know how to answer all your

  513. questions about Jesus. All I know is

  514. once I was blind and now I can see. You

  515. go figure that out."

  516. The one with doubts.

  517. And on this one will I look. John

    John 21 chapter mention

  518. chapter 21. Now verse 15.

  519. Simon Peter.

  520. So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus

  521. said to Simon Peter, "Simon,

  522. son of Jonah,

  523. do you love me more than these?"

  524. Simon had once boasted, "Lord, if

  525. everybody abandons you, I won't. I'll

  526. die for you.

  527. Do you love me more than everybody

  528. else?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord. you

  529. know that I love you. He said to him,

  530. feed my lambs.

  531. He said to him a second time,"Simon, son

  532. of Jonah, do you love me?" Didn't we

  533. just have this conversation?

  534. He said to him, "Yes, Lord. You know

  535. that I love you." He said to him, "Tend

  536. my sheep." He said to him the third

  537. time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love

  538. me?"

  539. The third time, no doubt, Peter was

  540. getting the message.

  541. Three times he had denied him.

  542. Three times he's asked the same

  543. question. And so Peter was grieved

  544. because he said to him the third time,

  545. "Do you love me?" And he said to him,

  546. "Lord, you know all things. You know

  547. that I love you." Jesus said to him,

  548. "Feed my sheep."

  549. Most assuredly I say to you, when you

  550. were younger, you girded yourself and

  551. walked where you wished. But when you're

  552. old, you will stretch out your hands,

  553. and another will gird you and carry you

  554. where you do not wish. This he spoke

  555. signifying by what death he would

  556. glorify God. And when he had spoken

  557. this, he said to him the very same thing

  558. that he met that he said when he met him

  559. on the Sea of Galilee so so long ago,

  560. three years before also at a miraculous

  561. catch of fish. He said, "Follow me."

  562. On this one will he look the one who has

  563. failed.

  564. And he says to the one who has failed

  565. the same thing he said before he failed.

  566. Follow me.

  567. The devil loves to take people who have

  568. failed and beat them up with it and

  569. remind them of it and keep them down and

  570. get them to to get to a disposition

  571. where it's like, I don't want to be

  572. around Christians anymore. I don't want

  573. to go to church anymore because I've

  574. failed so bad and everybody's going to

  575. judge me. And that's the devil shouting

  576. in your ear because Jesus doesn't talk

  577. like that. Jesus says, "Follow me. I

  578. told you follow me before you messed up.

  579. I knew you'd mess up before you ever

  580. messed up. I knew you'd mess up before I

  581. called you. I called you anyway. I think

  582. I know what I'm doing. Follow me."

  583. And so if you can push past the voice of

  584. the enemy and follow him anyway and come

  585. to this place where you just submit to

  586. him yet again because the gifts and

  587. calling of God are irrevocable.

  588. Hebrews 11:29, he doesn't change his

    Hebrews 11:29

  589. calling.

  590. Oh, somebody can get free from that

  591. right there. If you were ever called,

  592. you're still called.

  593. And the fact that you failed is actually

  594. an opportunity for greater growth.

  595. >> Oh, God takes the things the enemy meant

  596. for evil and turns it around for the

  597. good. The devil tried to take you out

  598. with it. And you may have felt like I'm

  599. going down for the last time. I've

  600. screwed up one too many times. And God's

  601. like, "Yeah, let me teach you something.

  602. Let me have failure become your teacher.

  603. Let it humble you. Let it bring you to

  604. contrition." like Isaiah was talking

  605. about and let me look on you and let's

  606. see what we can do about this. And he

  607. tells Peter, "When you were young, you

  608. kind of did what you wanted, wore what

  609. you wanted, went where you wanted."

  610. Doesn't this describe some of our early

  611. days of following Christ.

  612. God is my Santa Claus.

  613. And as long as I'm getting what's on my

  614. list, we're good.

  615. And we we pray that God will give us the

  616. particular car and the particular

  617. clothes and the particular job and the

  618. money and the shoes and we want what we

  619. want. We want to have God come along for

  620. the ride. That just tends to be

  621. how young Christians live.

  622. But he says, "Peter,

  623. now you learn some things.

  624. Now you've learned what you testified so

  625. long ago when I asked the question, "Who

  626. do men say that I am?" And you said,

  627. "You're the Christ, the son of the

  628. living God." And then you asked me in

  629. John chapter 6, "Will you also go away?"

    John 6 chapter mention

  630. When the crowds were leaving and Peter

  631. it was who said, "Lord, to whom shall we

  632. go?" You said those things earlier, but

  633. now it's going to be a deeper conviction

  634. because of what you went through. John

  635. the Baptist put it this way. He must

  636. increase. I must decrease. This is the

  637. path of Christianity.

  638. The salvation of a soul is the miracle

  639. of a moment. But the making of a saint

  640. is the task of a lifetime.

  641. >> And he says, "Peter, you did it the way

  642. you wanted to do it in the early days.

  643. As you get older,

  644. where's all my old people?"

  645. Woo.

  646. When you're old

  647. and you all going to get old.

  648. I know. I know you don't think so, but

  649. change going to come.

  650. And when you're older, he says you're

  651. not going to wear what you wanted.

  652. You're not going to go where you wanted.

  653. You're going to do some things that you

  654. don't want to do.

  655. That's an evolving, growing believer.

  656. But it's like a marriage. You know,

  657. I've

  658. counseledled young people and they're so

  659. giddy. They're excited and everything's

  660. about the colors and the flowers and the

  661. ceremony and the songs and

  662. that's how it starts.

  663. And I always think to myself, you have

  664. no idea

  665. what you're getting into. And I can't I

  666. can't explain it to you. You

  667. But isn't it true that as a relationship

  668. changes over time,

  669. it deepens

  670. if you're doing it right. If you're if

  671. you're investing in that relationship,

  672. it actually deepens. you've you've

  673. gotten familiar with them, but actually

  674. the relationship is much deeper. You you

  675. may not have the butterflies every time

  676. they walk in the room. In fact, you may

  677. want to throw something at them when

  678. they walk in the room. But not my wife.

  679. I love you, baby.

  680. I got to go home after this. But

  681. you know what I'm saying? You know, it's

  682. not it's not easy, but it's more depth.

  683. And that's what he's telling Peter. And

  684. that's what he's telling you. If you

  685. failed, your failure can be your

  686. greatest teacher. And it can take you to

  687. levels of intimacy with God like you

  688. have never experienced before

  689. in spite of your failure.

  690. Ain't God good?

  691. On this one will I look

  692. on the one with a past, on the one with

  693. doubts, on the one who has failed. On

  694. this one will I look on Mary,

  695. on Thomas, on Peter.

  696. Insert your name here. On this one will

  697. I look. Let's go back to Isaiah where we

  698. started

  699. chapter 66.

  700. But on this one will I look on him who

  701. is poor and of a contrite spirit and who

  702. trembles at my word. In other words, you

  703. take this seriously.

  704. This is not entertainment to you. This

  705. is the living, breathing word of God and

  706. you receive with meekness the word that

  707. is able to save your souls

  708. and change your life and change your

  709. mind and renew your mind and give you

  710. guidance and direction. It's all there.

  711. Add contrition

  712. and a respect for the word to whatever

  713. other baggage you have. And you have a

  714. recipe for God to look on you.

  715. On this one will I look. Put your name

  716. in there. Richard Ashley, put your name

  717. in there. Sienna, put your name in

  718. there. Carla

  719. William, put your name in there. on this

  720. one will I look. Now watch this. It's

  721. not that he just sees us. God sees

  722. everything.

  723. What it means is that he looks on you

  724. with favor.

  725. He's on your side.

  726. On this one, he looks with favor. We

  727. often use the priestly blessing here.

  728. The Lord bless you and keep you and make

  729. his face shine upon you and be gracious

  730. to you. And the next part says, "The

  731. Lord lift up his countenance upon you

  732. and give you peace." What that means is

  733. the Lord look on you with favor.

  734. The same thought,

  735. if he's looking on you with favor, you

  736. can get through anything. You can

  737. overcome anything.

  738. So Lord, look on us.

  739. We're poor. We're needy.

  740. Some of us are broken,

  741. shattered, even

  742. dealing with things that are hard and

  743. difficult. And

  744. our faith has wavered. Our past has come

  745. back to haunt us.

  746. And in cases we failed again and again.

  747. But look on us, Lord.

  748. We know we need you. We know we want

  749. you. We desire you. I lift up my eyes to

  750. the hills. Where does my help come from?

  751. My help comes from the Lord, the maker

  752. of heaven and earth. Look on us, Lord.

  753. Look on us.

  754. that we might be whole. Look on us that

  755. your favor might be evident as we enter

  756. into this new year.

  757. May it be the year of the favor of the

  758. Lord. Look on us, Lord,

  759. in Jesus mighty and matchless name.

  760. Amen.

  761. Going to ask the prayer team to come

  762. forward. The worship team is going to

  763. lead us in another song. And if you

  764. would like prayer for anything, feel

  765. free to come up.

  766. And everybody, if you would just stand

  767. your feet, if if you would just worship

  768. him and reflect and meditate on this

  769. message and give God the glory in this

  770. house.
