  2. Hey, hey, hey.

  3. >> [music]

  4. >> Hallelujah.

  5. >> Grace Summit Church. How we feeling

  6. today,

  7. >> man? Appreciate our worship team. Can we

  8. just celebrate them?

  9. >> Uh, who here, that was your first time

  10. hearing Pastor Dan's singing voice?

  11. Okay. Uh, we're going to have a church

  12. business meeting right now. Who would

  13. vote to hear more of Pastor Dan's

  14. singing voice in the future?

  15. >> All right, motion carried.

  16. I think even online there were some

  17. hands going up in living rooms, Pastor

  18. Dan.

  19. There's an anointing upon your voice.

  20. Praise the Lord. Hey, on your way in,

  21. uh, you received a pingpong ball.

  22. Um, is this the weirdest church that

  23. you've ever been to?

  24. >> Hands out ping-pong balls at church. My

  25. goodness. All right. Hey, uh it's uh

  26. kind of in basketball season. We're not

  27. quite to playoffs yet. Who played

  28. basketball in high school? Let me see

  29. your hands. Who played basketball in

  30. middle school and never did it in high

  31. school? There we go. Hey, there's my

  32. people. All right. Um All right. So,

  33. hey, we got a we got a basket up here.

  34. And look at the size difference, man.

  35. We're going to we're going to take a

  36. three-point shot. And uh front row, you

  37. only get two points. Um but look at

  38. this. how small the basketball is

  39. compared to the

  40. >> the hoop.

  41. >> So, I'm feeling pretty good that

  42. somebody in here can make it. So,

  43. everyone, okay, here's the ground rules.

  44. You have to stay in your seat.

  45. >> There's no slam dunking in church today.

  46. Diving over the pastor to try to get You

  47. can't do none of that. But all of us are

  48. going to stand to our feet. I want to

  49. see your pingpong ball.

  50. And not yet, but on the count of three,

  51. we're going to see who can make it in

  52. the basket.

  53. >> You guys ready? Oh, yeah. You you you

  54. Yeah. You get front row service.

  55. >> Yeah.

  56. Oh, man.

  57. She's so beautiful.

  58. Okay. All right. You guys ready? She's

  59. got two balls, too, man. She's getting

  60. it in.

  61. All right, you guys ready? On the count

  62. of three. One, two, three.

  63. Hey,

  64. who's was it? Who's was it?

  65. >> Bobby, did you I think some of you were

  66. just throwing them at me.

  67. I was feeling

  68. ushers.

  69. >> Ushers, it was Karen. [laughter]

  70. >> All right, you can have a seat. Uh, do

  71. we know who made it?

  72. >> Me.

  73. It was just a Whoa. [laughter]

  74. >> I think that was one of our elders.

  75. [laughter]

  76. All right, we don't know who made it. Uh

  77. because if we knew then we'd we'd bless

  78. you because that's a pretty amazing

  79. thing.

  80. >> All right, but hey, I'm going to take my

  81. shot.

  82. >> Can I Can I take my shot? We still got

  83. one more.

  84. >> I'm I'm going to take my shot. No.

  85. >> All right. All right. So, why was it

  86. hard for all of you but easy for me?

  87. >> Proximity.

  88. >> Proximity. Thank you, sister. Joy.

  89. There's joy in the house of the Lord. Oh

  90. my goodness. Yeah. If you're online,

  91. it's so much better here in person. So,

  92. next Sunday, make the drive. Get here,

  93. man, because we're having fun in church.

  94. Can we just celebrate God in the house?

  95. [applause]

  96. >> Okay. I feel bad cuz now there's going

  97. to be ushers cleaning up ping pong balls

  98. after church cuz they're everywhere.

  99. >> Hallelujah. Hey, why was it hard for you

  100. to make it and why was it easy for me?

  101. Say proximity.

  102. >> Proximity.

  103. >> I want you to hear this. Uh you can't be

  104. discipled at a distance.

  105. >> Amen.

  106. >> Yeah. We're going to dive into the word

  107. of God the next few weeks. We're going

  108. to be unpacking uh this idea of

  109. proximity. Uh before we dive into the

  110. living word, let's pray. Father, we

  111. thank you, Lord, for your Holy Spirit.

  112. Father, I thank you for your presence

  113. resting in this place. Father, we sense

  114. you here. And Lord, we pray that your

  115. voice would be heard above everything

  116. else. Lord, that we would receive of

  117. you, that we would hear you. And Father,

  118. when we leave this place today, Lord,

  119. we'll know that we've been touched by

  120. God. And so, Lord, I thank you, God, for

  121. blessing our time together in Jesus

  122. name. Amen.

  123. >> Same room, same target,

  124. same equipment,

  125. different results. The only thing that

  126. was different was distance. Say

  127. distance.

  128. James chapter 4 and verse 8

    James 4 chapter mention

  129. says this. It says, "Draw near to God

  130. and he will draw near to you."

  131. Draw near to God and he will

  132. draw near to you. Proximity matters

  133. where you are in relationship to God.

  134. Uh it shapes every experience that you

  135. have with God.

  136. Amen.

  137. You know, in the church world, man, we

  138. uh heard lots of different ones define

  139. sin, the original Greek word. And uh the

  140. original Greek was the same word was

  141. used as a marksman's term for archery.

  142. And so they would have their target and

  143. uh if they didn't quite hit the target,

  144. uh that was missing the mark. And so the

  145. Bible uses that word for sin uh very

  146. similarly that uh sin is just to miss

  147. the mark.

  148. Close proximity to God puts you in

  149. position

  150. to hit the mark.

  151. James chapter 4 and verse 8,

    James 4 chapter mention

  152. it gives us a very clear invitation.

  153. And today I want to give you a very

  154. clear invitation

  155. to draw near to God and he will

  156. draw near to you. He will

  157. he will you know I read scriptures like

  158. that and I go you know what is it that

  159. invokes uh the heart of God to pursue us

  160. to come close to us and it's you taking

  161. the first step. Amen.

  162. Look at your neighbor and say, "Draw

  163. near."

  164. >> The question I ask when I read

  165. scriptures like this, because we're very

  166. good at uh hearing some Christianes,

  167. draw near. Draw near to God, brother.

  168. Draw near to God. I go, "What does that

  169. mean? Well, how do I do that? What does

  170. that actually look like?" And so, we're

  171. going to unpack that a little bit. Uh

  172. what it actually looks like today. I

  173. want to give you three moves to draw

  174. near.

  175. Don't answer that. [laughter]

  176. We're in church, man. You got to save

  177. that.

  178. If you're watching online, somebody's

  179. phone went off. [laughter]

  180. We'll have fun with you, too.

  181. [clears throat]

  182. Three moves to draw near.

  183. Number one is close the distance.

  184. Close the distance. Uh, I can tell that

  185. most of you weren't basketball players

  186. in here, [laughter] but did anyone run

  187. track and field in high school?

  188. No, I was a distance runner. Um, I'm no

  189. longer a distance runner.

  190. Yeah, distance walker. I can go to the

  191. YMCA and make some laps, baby. But, but

  192. I'm not running distance like I used to.

  193. But I used to I used to run distance.

  194. And uh I've I I've always had a little

  195. bit of an attitude and a competitive

  196. mentality. Anyone in here? Where are my

  197. people at? Yeah. And so when I was

  198. running in competition and I would come

  199. around that bend and I would see that

  200. guy in the distance in front of me and I

  201. know he's leading me. That that egged me

  202. on like I'm going to catch this dude.

  203. And so instead of that healthy pace, I

  204. would get up. I I'll be chasing that

  205. dude out and I would be closing the

  206. distance. Amen. And so that's what we're

  207. talking about in our pursuit to God is

  208. that we're going to close the distance

  209. today. And in order to close the

  210. distance, we first have to know how the

  211. distance got there. Because the original

  212. design with Adam and Eve that we see in

  213. the garden was for God and man to dwell

  214. together.

  215. There was no distance.

  216. They were at one with each other.

  217. They had direct relationship with God.

  218. And I assume most of us have read the

  219. story of Adam and Eve.

  220. Sin gets involved.

  221. They listen to the devil and begin to

  222. question God and they eat the fruit. And

  223. it's uh still up for debate. We don't

  224. know if it was an apple or an orange,

  225. what kind of fruit it was, but they ate

  226. of the fruit.

  227. Genesis 3 and verse 8.

  228. After that sin,

  229. it says this, "And they heard the sound

  230. of the Lord God walking in the garden in

  231. the cool of the day. And the man and his

  232. wife hid themselves from the presence of

  233. the Lord God among the trees of the

  234. garden. But the Lord God called the man

  235. and said to him, "Where are you?"

  236. I want you to catch this this morning

  237. and see if it relates to you. God wasn't

  238. hiding from them. They were hiding from

  239. God.

  240. God wasn't hiding from them.

  241. They were hiding from God. And God says,

  242. "Where are you?" It's not because God

  243. didn't know where they were. God already

  244. knows that. And if you're taking notes,

  245. you can write this down. That his

  246. question

  247. isn't for his information.

  248. It's for their invitation.

  249. That's why God says, "Where are you?"

  250. And I wonder how often in our lives,

  251. God's reaching out saying, "Where are

  252. you?" inviting us. I was thinking about

  253. this scripture

  254. between services. Blessed are they that

  255. hunger and thirst after righteousness,

  256. for they will be filled.

  257. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst

  258. after righteousness.

  259. they will be filled. Draw near to God

  260. and he will

  261. draw near to you.

  262. He says, "Where are you?

  263. Where are you? Why are you hiding from

  264. me? Why are you covering yourself?"

  265. And the voice from God isn't coming like

  266. the heart of an interrogating cop.

  267. It's not the flashlight in the eyes.

  268. Where were you? Where were you on the

  269. night of the 13th? You know, it's not

  270. that hard of interrogation. Let me share

  271. this with you. It's the heart of a

  272. father that just lost their children.

  273. Any parents in here?

  274. Yeah. We had four kids in four years.

  275. And uh so like we just we would sit in

  276. our living room and be like, "Where did

  277. all these little people come from in our

  278. living room?" And uh there were times

  279. that it was a little more than we could

  280. handle. and every we'd lose track of

  281. one, right? This is uh not good

  282. parenting 101. You know what I mean?

  283. Like, yeah, houses have a sizable house

  284. and you can't find one. You guys know

  285. that that heart of panic when you can't

  286. find a kid. Like, where are you? I don't

  287. think God was panicking. I think God is

  288. pursuing. Amen. But that's the heart of

  289. the father. Where are you? I I'm hungry

  290. for you. I I I want to be close to you.

  291. And something has put this distance

  292. between us.

  293. Ever since that moment with Adam and

  294. Eve,

  295. God's been playing hide-and-seek. Can I

  296. say this? Men have been playing

  297. hide-and-seek with God.

  298. Problem isn't

  299. with feeling distant from God.

  300. [clears throat]

  301. It's that man is hiding from God.

  302. And too often

  303. you're in your life saying, "God, where

  304. are you?" And God's saying it right back

  305. to you, "Where are you at?

  306. Where are you at?" Because God is God.

  307. He's immovable.

  308. Amen.

  309. and my heart in righteousness is that I

  310. would align myself through the blood of

  311. Jesus with his grace, with his

  312. anointing, with his blessing. What I'm

  313. not doing is over here in my own mass

  314. saying, "God, can you come over here and

  315. clean this mess up for me?

  316. Where are you? Look at your neighbor and

  317. say, "Close the distance."

  318. >> How in the world do we do that? You

  319. know, I I like to look at what it is

  320. that we're hiding behind.

  321. We don't hide behind trees like Adam and

  322. Eve. We hide behind our own sin,

  323. shame,

  324. distraction.

  325. I said distraction,

  326. image.

  327. Want people to think that I'm okay. So,

  328. I kind of put on Sunday face and fake

  329. it. You guys heard that terminology,

  330. fake it till you make it. I've heard

  331. that used in the church world. I really

  332. don't like that because Jesus didn't die

  333. on a cross so that we can fake it.

  334. >> Jesus died on a cross so we can get real

  335. with God. Amen. So that we can confess

  336. our sins and be cleansed and purified

  337. and made holy as he is holy, righteous

  338. as he is righteous. That we can be in

  339. alignment with God and be blessed by

  340. God.

  341. So you can fake it.

  342. It's got heavy in here, man. You guys

  343. feel that.

  344. Time to get real.

  345. That's why Jesus came.

  346. Repentance isn't some churchy word to

  347. make you feel terrible

  348. about yourself. Repentance is a heart

  349. change.

  350. It's a heart change.

  351. Let's unpack this a little bit. James

    James 4:7

  352. chapter 4

  353. verse 7 kind of gives us the whole

  354. sequence here. He says, "Submit yourself

  355. therefore to God. Resist the devil and

  356. he will flee from you. Draw near to God

  357. and he will draw near to you. Cleanse

  358. your hands, you sinners. Purify your

  359. hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched

  360. and mourn and weep.

  361. Let your laughter be turned to mourning

  362. and your joy to gloom. Humble yourself

  363. before the Lord and he will exalt you.

  364. That's the sequence. He says, "Submit

  365. yourself."

  366. Submit has the idea of giving yourself

  367. to uh it's the idea that I'm no longer

  368. fighting God. Amen. He says, "Submit

  369. yourself." And he says, "Resist the

  370. devil." So, I'm no longer fighting God,

  371. but I am fighting the devil.

  372. Submit. Resist the devil.

  373. And I love the scripture here. He says,

  374. "Wash your hands and purify your

  375. hearts."

  376. He says, "Humble yourselves." These are

  377. these are things that we do.

  378. Not that somebody does for us.

  379. Repentance isn't hunting down a hiding

  380. God.

  381. It's us stepping out of hiding and

  382. revealing oursel to God.

  383. I say close the distance.

  384. I want to get real practical for a

  385. minute. What does that look like to

  386. close the distance? I'll speak from my

  387. own personal experience.

  388. I have to name the distance.

  389. I can't be vague and this idea draw near

  390. to God. What does that mean? Close it.

  391. What does that mean?

  392. I have to be able to

  393. take an honest assessment and identify

  394. what is that thing that's causing the

  395. distance. And I have to name it and

  396. listen, I can't repent from what I won't

  397. name.

  398. Name the distance.

  399. Where did I drift?

  400. Maybe it's a habit that crept back in or

  401. a old hurt that I thought I dealt with

  402. and come to find out I didn't.

  403. It's an area of compromise that I just

  404. continue to justify and it puts me in

  405. that cycle over and over again.

  406. Name the distance.

  407. [snorts] So, we're closing the distance.

  408. Number two for your notes is change your

  409. devotion.

  410. After you name it, you refuse it and

  411. then you replace it. You replace it.

  412. The question I ask myself is that area

  413. that I'm easily I can look at and name

  414. it. Maybe it's a distraction. Whatever

  415. that thing is, I I I want to take a look

  416. at it and say, what area that God was

  417. wanting to fulfill in me? Was I

  418. temporarily being filled by this other

  419. thing?

  420. Amen. It helps me to kind of uh take an

  421. inventory and to be able to see what are

  422. the things that are causing the

  423. distance.

  424. giving you homework this week.

  425. You guys know that church happens more

  426. than just Sunday morning.

  427. It's not about uh putting on Sunday face

  428. and lifting your hands here. That's a

  429. good start. But who are you on Monday

  430. morning? Who are you on Tuesday

  431. afternoon? And and and on those in those

  432. moments, are we intentional? Are we in

  433. pursuit of God to name that thing to

  434. repent? Are we closing the distance? Are

  435. we drawing near to God? So, we're

  436. putting ourselves in position that God

  437. will be in pursuit of us and and drawing

  438. near to us.

  439. James 4:5 says this. It says that he

    James 4:5

  440. God, he yearns jealously over the spirit

  441. that he has made to dwell in us.

  442. Bible uses some intense language.

  443. He yearns jealously,

  444. not over you, over what he put in you,

  445. his Holy Spirit.

  446. If you've been saved, if you gave your

  447. life to Christ and prayed that prayer

  448. and

  449. forgiven of your sins, the Bible says

  450. the Holy Spirit dwells in you. You are

  451. the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  452. God's not casually interested in you. He

  453. yearns jealously

  454. over the spirit that he made to dwell in

  455. you. You are designed as God's dwelling

  456. place, his home,

  457. the throne room. I love to study the Old

  458. Testament and look at the Holy of

  459. Holies. Do you know that you are the

  460. throne room of the living God?

  461. His holiness dwells in you. And God

  462. refuses to share that space with the

  463. things of the world that destroy you.

  464. He's jealous over that place of holiness

  465. that's within you.

  466. I've heard it said that God only wants

  467. one thing

  468. and that's all of you.

  469. Isn't that true? God only wants one

  470. thing. He wants all of us. Can I bring

  471. this home a little bit? Talking about

  472. our affections and our relationship with

  473. God. Yeah. I'm I'm married and I only

  474. want one thing from my wife. I want all

  475. of her, right?

  476. I'm her man. Just ask her. She snap her

  477. neck. That's my man.

  478. What if she starts sharing her

  479. affections that are designed for me?

  480. Covenant of marriage. she starts sharing

  481. those affections with another

  482. that sacred place.

  483. And that's what's happening in the

  484. spirit. And James calls it out. He calls

  485. uh calls the people that they're in

  486. spiritual adultery.

  487. That those things that are reserved only

  488. for God have been given to another.

  489. He's not jealous of you.

  490. He's jealous for you.

  491. Repentance often times is just changing

  492. our devotion.

  493. You know, if point one is about stepping

  494. out of hiding, point two is about who

  495. you're stepping towards.

  496. Sometimes we think about repentance. We

  497. go, man, it's really what it means is

  498. stop doing bad stuff.

  499. It's really stop giving my heart to the

  500. other things,

  501. to the lesser gods.

  502. to those things that are reserved for

  503. the one true God. James 4:4 says this.

    James 4:4

  504. He says, "Do you not know that

  505. friendship," say, "Friendship."

  506. >> Do you not know that friendship with the

  507. world is enmity with God?

  508. We don't use that word very often, do

  509. we? Enmity. You know what I think of?

  510. You can tell I have kids from this. You

  511. guys remember Finding Nemo when he has

  512. to say where he lives and he goes

  513. anemone. Right? When I read

  514. [clears throat] enmity, that's what I

  515. think of. It just means to be an enemy

  516. of God. He says, "Don't you know that

  517. friendship with the world?" It doesn't

  518. say that if you're in covenant

  519. relationship with the world,

  520. it says if you're a friend of the world,

  521. if you're a friend in friendship with

  522. the world, it makes us an enemy of God.

  523. The heart is proximity. The heart is

  524. drawing near. The heart is hunger and

  525. thirsting after righteousness. How do I

  526. get my heart in that place? Cuz because

  527. I've been that kid in church, bored to

  528. tears, ready to get out of here. My

  529. heart wasn't hungry for anything

  530. spiritual. Amen. How do we get our heart

  531. that man, we're just we can hardly wait

  532. for more presence of God, more power of

  533. God, more more love of God. How do we

  534. get to that place that we're that we're

  535. drawing near and then and then as a

  536. result of that, God's drawing near to us

  537. and chasing us down? That's the That's

  538. the destination in our relationship with

  539. Jesus. Amen.

  540. Sometimes we wonder why we don't feel

  541. close to God.

  542. Can I tell you that it's not about

  543. feelings, it's about faith.

  544. We wonder why we don't feel the presence

  545. of God.

  546. Sometimes it's because we've given our

  547. heart to the things of the world.

  548. Sometimes we're in an affair

  549. with the things of the world.

  550. Real repentance is cutting off the

  551. affair.

  552. It's deleting the number.

  553. It's forgetting the address.

  554. We don't go there anymore.

  555. And that's step one. There's an

  556. authentic affair. Step two is now

  557. chasing after my spouse. Let me change

  558. my devotion. Let me change my affections

  559. back to the one that it's designed for

  560. spiritually. That's what James is

  561. confronting.

  562. Spiritual adultery.

  563. Let me say this. Repentance is handing

  564. God back the heart that you've been

  565. handing to other things.

  566. God says, "I yearn jealously over you."

  567. So, we close the distance. We change our

  568. devotion.

  569. I want to go practical

  570. on you for just a moment

  571. and say this. Audit your affections.

  572. Audit your affections.

  573. I'm in here in a business that has

  574. audits. Hopefully none of you are

  575. familiar with the IRS and their audits.

  576. That's no fun. But healthy businesses,

  577. they every so often they have they have

  578. audits. They have an outside source come

  579. in and they'll they'll audit the entire

  580. business. Sometimes it's financial or

  581. other areas and they'll go through with

  582. a fine tooth comb and and look at every

  583. penny spent and who's doing. I mean,

  584. they just go through and they'll they'll

  585. be challenging people uh CFOs and all. I

  586. mean, they'll be they'll be uh putting

  587. it up and going, "Man, you missed it

  588. here and you need to tighten this up and

  589. you need to change that, right?" be

  590. because things are off. And and here's

  591. the heart is that we audit our

  592. affections.

  593. We audit our affections.

  594. What is the place? There's this

  595. subconscious thing that happens

  596. sometimes that uh when we've had a rough

  597. day, where do we run to for comfort?

  598. Is it God or is it something else?

  599. When I have an issue or a problem and I

  600. need direction,

  601. who am I running to for that?

  602. Is it God

  603. or is it someone else?

  604. Who gets my attention?

  605. Does God get my

  606. first

  607. of the day or is God getting my table

  608. scraps

  609. at the end of the day?

  610. He yearns for you.

  611. He's hungry for you. He loves you.

  612. And like a father that is looking for a

  613. lost child,

  614. I believe the spirit of God today is

  615. chasing you down,

  616. calling you back.

  617. He yearns for you.

  618. So, we've seen God isn't hiding.

  619. We are. We've seen that he yearns for

  620. us. The last move that we're going to

  621. make

  622. in drawing near number three is chase

  623. the cloud.

  624. Chase the cloud.

  625. To not just come back to him, but to

  626. keep up with him.

  627. There's this moment with Moses

  628. that really shows me what drawing near

  629. looks like.

  630. You [snorts] guys know when it goes from

  631. just an idea to really getting down in

  632. your heart, getting down in your bones.

  633. I mean, it just ch starts to change

  634. my pursuit of God or my perception of

  635. God.

  636. So, it's a scene where Israel is really

  637. just blown it.

  638. So seeing that we see that these guys

  639. are uh have all these idols, these

  640. golden calves

  641. and uh it's discourage discouraging to

  642. God. Do you know that God has emotions?

  643. God tells Moses, he says, "Hey, I'll

  644. still give you the land,

  645. promised land. I I'll still send an

  646. angel. You'll still win,

  647. but I'm not going with you."

  648. And he gives the why behind the what.

  649. And I love what God just shoots

  650. straight. He says, "I'm not going with

  651. you because these people are stiff

  652. necked." And I'll paraphrase. You can

  653. read it when you get home. He says,

  654. "They're stiff necked people and I might

  655. hurt them." He says, "I might destroy

  656. them." And I want you to catch this

  657. scene that that God has delivered them

  658. out of the hand of Pharaoh, out of

  659. slavery, and they're out in the

  660. wilderness. God has fed them and blessed

  661. them. And now he's taken them to the

  662. land of milk and honey, the promised

  663. land. Amen. And they're in that they are

  664. refusing God and they're making these

  665. these little gods, these golden calves,

  666. and they're worshiping them.

  667. And God's looking at it going, "Man, you

  668. can go. I'll still bless you, Moses.

  669. You'll still win the battle. You'll

  670. still make it in. I'll send my angel

  671. with me, but I I'm not sure what I'm

  672. going to do. These people are really

  673. pushing me.

  674. I want you to hear Moses's response. He

  675. says, "If your present doesn't go with

  676. us, I'm not going."

  677. Some people would take God up on that

  678. offer. Uh, you mean we can still do what

  679. we want to do? We can take our little

  680. golden cast and worship and and you're

  681. still going to send your angel and we're

  682. still going to win and we're still going

  683. to get to the destination that we're so

  684. hoping for, but but you don't have to

  685. come with us, God, so we have to do

  686. things your way.

  687. A lot of people would take him up on

  688. that offer. And Moses says, "Listen, if

  689. you don't go, I don't go."

  690. In other words, Moses is saying, "I

  691. would rather stay here in the wilderness

  692. with your presence than make it to the

  693. promised land without your presence."

  694. >> That's proximity.

  695. That's someone who isn't chasing

  696. outcomes,

  697. but that's chasing God.

  698. I've seen this

  699. in Christianity. You can have progress

  700. without presence.

  701. But I know firsthand it feels empty

  702. every time I get there.

  703. Presence.

  704. I think about a season years ago

  705. I was pastoring and man we our services

  706. like God just started moving in our

  707. services and the presence of God was

  708. there and our worship just kind of hit a

  709. different place you know when the power

  710. of God falls and and man the altars

  711. would just fill up and and God's really

  712. doing things and and as a result of that

  713. we kind of changed the way that we did

  714. church service uh rather than just

  715. having that dismissal at the end man I

  716. mean it was our culture to open the

  717. altars because people are coming whether

  718. I dismiss her I mean it was just God and

  719. healings were happening and all these

  720. different things. Power of God was was

  721. moving and there was this weird shift

  722. and I I couldn't quite put my finger on

  723. it that that God kind of lifted himself

  724. from that and and changed directions.

  725. But we continue to do church that same

  726. way.

  727. And as a pastor, I can tell you when

  728. you're really pushing for the altar call

  729. and nobody comes, that's an awkward

  730. place to be. Amen.

  731. But God wasn't moving on the hearts of

  732. the people. I want you to catch this.

  733. When God rescued Israel from Egypt

  734. and brought them into the wilderness, he

  735. didn't give them a map and say good

  736. luck.

  737. He gave them his presence. There's a

  738. pillar of cloud by day, pillar of fire

  739. by night. Numbers chapter 9 and verse 15

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  740. says, "On the day that the tabernacle

  741. was set up, the cloud covered the

  742. tabernacle, the 10 of the testimony,

  743. and at evening

  744. it was over the tabernacle like the

  745. appearance of fire until morning."

  746. So it was always the cloud covered it by

  747. day and the appearance of fire by night.

  748. And wherever the cloud lifted from the

  749. tent after that the people of Israel set

  750. out and in the place where the cloud

  751. settled down there the people of Israel

  752. camped.

  753. This is the presence of God. God gave

  754. them a t tangible kind of connection

  755. with his presence. The cloud by day, the

  756. fire by night. And sometimes the

  757. presence would stay in that location for

  758. a day, sometimes a month, sometimes a

  759. year.

  760. Numbers 9:18 it says at the command of

    Numbers 9:18

  761. the Lord the people of Israel set out

  762. and at the command of the Lord they

  763. camped.

  764. As long as the cloud rested over the

  765. tabernacle

  766. they remained in camp.

  767. Their proximity to God wasn't about a

  768. feeling. It was about their obedience to

  769. move with God.

  770. Your proximity to God isn't about a

  771. feeling. It's about your obedience to

  772. God. Amen.

  773. When the cloud moved, they moved. When

  774. the cloud stayed, they stayed.

  775. Say, "Chase the cloud."

  776. >> Don't camp where God was and miss where

  777. God is.

  778. I want you to imagine the Israelite

  779. families.

  780. uh you know the cloud clouds moving and

  781. everyone's starting to uproot and move

  782. get their tent stakes up and and they're

  783. getting ready to go and and uh there's a

  784. family that says you know what we kind

  785. of like it here I mean the kids are

  786. settled in uh we like the there's a

  787. river close by I mean they're you know

  788. whatever they they go man we're not

  789. we're not going and and God's presence

  790. and the tabernacle and everything moves

  791. and they say we're not moving how long

  792. before they start blaming God for lack

  793. of blessing.

  794. I wonder how often we get there in the

  795. spiritual realm that you know God is

  796. doing it in this season and man all of a

  797. sudden God starts moving and I want you

  798. to catch this that I hate moving. Can I

  799. just say that like we had my wife this

  800. is how we know uh that God I God had to

  801. speak to my wife and I to move from

  802. Michigan. We And and the funny thing is

  803. about moving is uh when you move, don't

  804. you realize all the extra stuff that you

  805. have that you don't need,

  806. >> right? And if you move often, uh you

  807. start to really trim it back of, you

  808. know, you get all the bed, but after

  809. you've camped for too long, then you

  810. realize, man, we lived in our house a

  811. long time before we moved here. We had

  812. stuff and I'm going, what year is this

  813. stuff from? Like, where did it even come

  814. from? And why do we I mean, our kids

  815. outgrew this for, you know what I mean?

  816. It's just like you have all this extra

  817. baggage. And that's what happens in the

  818. spirit. That's why God keeps us on the

  819. move to keep us a little bit

  820. uncomfortable and it cleans all the

  821. baggage out.

  822. >> Amen.

  823. >> Don't camp where God was,

  824. but be where God is. Some of us are

  825. asking God to bless our campsite when

  826. God moved a long time ago.

  827. Repentance is packing up your campsite.

  828. And the heart is to not get married to a

  829. season that God had you in,

  830. but keep up with where God has you now.

  831. Be a presence traveler. Can I say this

  832. isn't just Old Testament. Acts chapter

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  833. 13

  834. verse two says this. It says, "While

  835. they were worshiping the Lord and

  836. fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set

  837. apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the

  838. work to which I have called them."

  839. This wasn't a leadership conference that

  840. they're getting the call of who's who's

  841. going to lead or who's going to go or

  842. and they were they're worshiping,

  843. they're fasting, they're Bible says they

  844. were ministering to the Lord. And in

  845. that atmosphere, the spirit of God

  846. speaks.

  847. And then it continues to say, it says,

  848. "So being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  849. they went.

  850. Calling didn't come from a whiteboard.

  851. It came from a worship service."

  852. One of the things I see is that

  853. repentance is the key.

  854. Through all of this, repentance is the

  855. key. Every great revival

  856. in history that we've seen,

  857. an authentic move of God began with

  858. repentance.

  859. It began with saying no to self and

  860. saying yes to God.

  861. My experience with God is

  862. sometimes God will lead me in a way to

  863. do something just to see if I'm still

  864. obedient to his spirit.

  865. Do you know how many times it's been a

  866. while and I thank God for it that I've

  867. spent the week preparing a message. Oh

  868. my goodness, put hours into this thing

  869. and labor of love and I have this

  870. powerful message all pulled together and

  871. I'm anticipating it and even Saturday

  872. night, man, I'm thinking about this

  873. thing and I've stood up Sunday morning

  874. and God says, "Don't preach that. Preach

  875. this." And I'm going, "What in the

  876. world, God? Why did I spend hours doing

  877. all this stuff?" And he goes, "I don't

  878. know. that was on you, but I'm asking

  879. you to preach this. [laughter]

  880. I'll I'll share my experience. I've gone

  881. both ways in obedience. I've sensed that

  882. God wanted me to preach something else

  883. and I held to my comfort zone and

  884. preached my notes and it was the driest,

  885. most mundane, boring, backwards sermon

  886. you'll ever hear in your life. And man,

  887. if I got that on CD, I'm throwing it in

  888. the garbage can. Some of those old ones,

  889. right? I I've had the other experience

  890. where I'm man I step out in faith and I

  891. just preach because I'm hearing from God

  892. and I don't even have notes in front of

  893. me and the power of God shows up in a

  894. beautiful way in an anointed way that

  895. blesses that changes hearts that heals

  896. souls

  897. obedience is the key. So number one is

  898. close the distance. Number two is change

  899. devotion.

  900. hand God our heart again. Number three

  901. is chase the cloud.

  902. It's repentance. It's pulling up our

  903. stakes and moving with his presence. And

  904. I'm going to say this, repentance uh and

  905. I'm going to ask the worship team to

  906. come. Repentance isn't like uh

  907. punishment.

  908. Sometimes we look at it that way like

  909. it's this mean God telling us that we

  910. can't. Repentance repentance isn't

  911. punishment. It's the process of getting

  912. our heart back with him because God

  913. wants to bless us. Amen.

  914. God's heart is to be close to us.

  915. Chasing the cloud. When God moves, I

  916. move.

  917. Seen different ones hold on to different

  918. things from the past.

  919. Back in 1970,

  920. God was moving Jesus people revival and

  921. souls were being saved. And I'm staying

  922. right here. This is the way God did it.

  923. And I go, "Man, I think God's looking at

  924. it going, I moved 40 years ago.

  925. >> I did that then, but I'm doing this

  926. now." Can I say that there's a fresh

  927. move of God happening?

  928. >> There's a fresh thing that God's doing

  929. in the land. Sometimes we do that with

  930. our own salvation experience. those

  931. first uh few years of salvation, it's

  932. like, man, God just is moving in our

  933. hearts and we're sensing that that thing

  934. and man, we kind of put our tent stakes

  935. down. We we're camping here and God

  936. starts moving [music] and we keep going

  937. back to that those early days.

  938. [music]

  939. God says, "I'm doing a new thing now."

  940. Let's stand to our feet all over this

  941. house.

  942. I'm doing a new thing now.

  943. I'm going to close with this and give

  944. you this

  945. encouragement

  946. that God is not casually interested in

  947. you, but God is hungry for intimacy with

  948. you.

  949. Whatever those things are that are

  950. causing distance between you and him,

  951. can I challenge you this week? Can I

  952. challenge you today? Not someday, but

  953. today

  954. to do business with God, to remove those

  955. things that are causing the distance,

  956. [music]

  957. to come back to your first love.

  958. had a season in my life that man I just

  959. had powerful [music] devotion life every

  960. morning wake up and I actually God gave

  961. me a location to pray. I called it the

  962. upper room and it [music] actually was

  963. an upstairs room and place that I was

  964. serving in ministry and nobody else was

  965. there. That was the thing. I just kind

  966. of wanted to be alone with God. And and

  967. so every morning I go and I walk when I

  968. pray. And so I'd walk around the

  969. perimeter of the room and pray and just

  970. have this dynamic. And God was speaking

  971. to me. And man, I just leave there so

  972. charged up. And I'd sit and read [music]

  973. read the word of God. And you know, my

  974. my ambition was three chapters a day.

  975. But man, I'd find myself 5, 10, 15

  976. chapters later going, "Man, God is

  977. speaking." And I just I'm hung. I love

  978. this. And every morning, morning after

  979. morning, I go back and have this

  980. experience with God. and and then

  981. something shifted in my schedule where I

  982. wasn't all of a sudden allowed able to

  983. do that and and so man life got busy and

  984. all this stuff started happening and now

  985. my devotion life is getting pushed to

  986. the end of the day [music]

  987. so busy in the morning didn't have the

  988. time for it

  989. so I'm quick trying to get it in

  990. I had commitment to God a few weeks of

  991. that and man I'm starting to feel dry

  992. starting to feel like a miss I'm

  993. starting to feel drawn back to that man

  994. my schedule. I just I just couldn't fit

  995. it in. And so God's getting my my table

  996. scraps, not the not the first of me.

  997. And there was a day that I finally was

  998. able to make it back up to that room and

  999. walked in and man, I was getting

1000. emotional and just getting back in that

1001. place and started to walk. And God began

  1002. to minister to me.

1003. He said, "I've been here every morning

  1004. waiting for you,

  1005. but you weren't here.

  1006. It's a loving father

  1007. welcoming me back.

1008. I don't know who it is or someone in

1009. this room that you've you drifted.

1010. You've fallen away. It's not quite as

  1011. vibrant

1012. as it once was. cuz God's calling you
