  2. >> Grace Summit Church, how we feeling

  3. today?

  4. >> My goodness, man. That was some good

  5. worship. Thank you, worship team. Miss

  6. Whitney. Yeah. Confirmed. Pastor Mark is

  7. alive. Uh my wife and I were able to go

  8. out to dinner with Mark and Kate last

  9. night and and uh man, they're they're uh

  10. really enjoying the sbatical and

  11. catching a time of refreshing and uh

  12. soon and very soon they'll be back with

  13. us. So we're excited about that. Don't

  14. start singing the old songs, Carla.

  15. She's going gather on me.

  16. >> And uh man, it was good to see Avery up

  17. here.

  18. Miss Averly, it's so good to have you in

  19. the house. Let's celebrate Miss Avery

  20. Hannah. My goodness.

  21. >> Yeah, she's bringing the cool to the

  22. worship team.

  23. >> Uh hey, a couple of uh uh prayer

  24. uh things. Uh many of you know Tom

  25. Pierce. Uh man, he was in the hospital

  26. all last week. And uh if you don't know

  27. Tom, he's uh he's the a guy that has uh

  28. so much love that it's just oozing out

  29. of him and he loves to give hugs and he

  30. gives the hardest, firmst hugs.

  31. >> Yeah, man. He'll just grip you. And we

  32. love Tom. He's a staple in this church

  33. and uh man, we've been praying for him.

  34. He's in the hospital. I got news. He's

  35. home and uh we want to we want to pray

  36. for him. uh continued prayer for him and

  37. Sue and uh he's on the mend and uh Tom,

  38. we're praying for you, buddy. We love

  39. you

  40. >> and we prayed for you in first service

  41. and we're going to pray for you in this

  42. service. So, I'm going to ask Pastor Dan

  43. if he would join me up here and uh pray

  44. for that need. I'm going to ask Pastor

  45. Jack if he would join me up here also.

  46. And uh you guys uh we have some special

  47. guests today. My parents are here.

  48. >> Hallelujah.

  49. So, if you don't know, uh Dan and Bonnie

  50. Lee Hugh, uh they're the they're the

  51. very attractive couple over here. And uh

  52. my mother had her birthday yesterday.

  53. >> That's fun.

  54. And uh she's finally over the hill. I

  55. think she's 40 years old,

  56. >> which makes me 20. Hey,

  57. >> I go back to my 20s.

  58. Uh good to have them today. And many of

  59. you have been praying uh for my mother.

  60. She had uh bypass surgery, emergency

  61. bypass surgery. And man, she's here.

  62. >> God healed her and and doing great

  63. things and uh she has a stent uh needing

  64. to be put in real soon. So, we want to

  65. pray over that blessing. So, over that

  66. need. So, Pastor, if you can pray for

  67. Tom and Pastor Jack, if you can pray for

  68. Bonnie Lee Hugh, my beautiful young

  69. mother out there.

  70. >> Bonnie Lee.

  71. >> Bonnie Lee Hugh.

  72. >> Bonnie Leehu.

  73. >> Yes. Okay, pastor. He's got it.

  74. >> I got it.

  75. >> And uh if we can all join together.

  76. Listen, guys. A church that prays

  77. together stays together.

  78. >> Amen. And so we need to we are praying

  79. church here. Pastor Dan, go ahead and

  80. pray.

  81. >> Well, Father, we just thank you for

  82. pausing the service just to be able to

  83. acknowledge that uh you know everything

  84. that we bring to you before we bring it.

  85. But we acknowledge the need in Tom's

  86. life, God. And we thank you for what

  87. you've already done. We thank you, God,

  88. that you watched over him during the

  89. hospital stay and during the surgery and

  90. now he's home. And we just pray that you

  91. would continue to watch over him and

  92. raise him up, God. Do what only you can

  93. do. Just bring back his health and his

  94. strength. And may he be back here very

  95. soon, squishing us all, Lord, in Jesus

  96. name. Amen.

  97. >> Amen.

  98. >> Father, we're thankful that wherever two

  99. or three are gathered, you're in our

  100. midst. We recognize your midst here

  101. right now this morning. and we recognize

  102. your power and authority over Bonnie's

  103. life, that she's fearfully and

  104. wonderfully made. That I pray that uh

  105. Lord that there would be a peace and a

  106. calm that would come over her, her

  107. family, her friends. Lord, just an

  108. awareness of your power and authority in

  109. her life. I pray that every doctor,

  110. nurse, helper, anybody that's involved

  111. with her life and her rep, her her

  112. surgery, her healing, her recovery,

  113. Lord, they would be guided by your hand.

  114. They might not even know it. That's

  115. okay. You know it. And I pray that you

  116. would guide those folks to be able to

  117. bring success and healing and full

  118. recovery to her quickly. And that Lord,

  119. her family would be blessed. Your name

  120. would be exalted. And we thank you for

  121. it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  122. >> And can we celebrate the Lord together?

  123. >> Thank you, pastors. Listen, uh we are a

  124. praying church and uh we have many that

  125. uh send prayer needs to us uh as you

  126. have needs in your life. Um I tell you,

  127. we Wednesdays we pray, uh right in here

  128. in this room. And uh man, we love to

  129. have the different needs uh to pray for.

  130. So, call the church office, let us know.

  131. Uh there's also a Facebook uh prayer

  132. group. I'm not sure who's all on that

  133. thing, but man, I'm getting updates

  134. regularly on on different prayer needs

  135. and things like that. And uh man, it's

  136. it's uh uh really the one true source of

  137. freedom and power that we have is

  138. prayer. Amen.

  139. All right. Hey, we're going to dive into

  140. the word of God. This is uh the last

  141. Sunday, I think, unless God uh shifts

  142. things. This is the last Sunday that

  143. we're going to uh talk about proximity.

  144. And so we've been on a a bit of a

  145. journey. Uh we talked about proxim

  146. proximity to God. Uh drawing near,

  147. staying near. Last week we talked about

  148. proximity. I'm getting tongue tied

  149. today. Proximity. Proximity to purpose

  150. and proximity to pain. And today we're

  151. going to shift gears and talk about

  152. proximity to people. How many know that

  153. people matter?

  154. >> How many know that your relationship

  155. with people matter? And and so we want

  156. to talk about that, what God has to say

  157. about that. Would you pray with me?

  158. Father, we thank you, Lord, God for

  159. revival breaking loose in our hearts

  160. today, God. Father, I thank you, Lord,

  161. for enlightenment, God, understanding.

  162. Give us clear direction. Father, there's

  163. so many uh people that come and go in

  164. our lives. And some people are there

  165. throughout our entire lives. But Father,

  166. help us. Give us the wisdom to know what

  167. we should do with these different

  168. relationships. Understanding. Father, I

  169. pray Lord that you would preach to us

  170. now. Get me out of your way, Father. You

  171. speak into our hearts. I thank you for

  172. the anointing upon the preaching of your

  173. word now in Jesus name. Amen.

  174. >> Uh here's what I've learned in light of

  175. proximity to people, and I've learned it

  176. the hard way. Do we have anyone else

  177. that learns things the hard way? Uh I

  178. have a consistent track record of

  179. learning things the hard way. And uh

  180. man, it's kind of trial and error

  181. sometimes as we go through life. But uh

  182. what I've learned is that you can be

  183. close to God, proximity to God, and be

  184. wounded by people.

  185. Amen. You ever been wounded?

  186. By people. Sometimes the people that

  187. we're closest with hurt us the most.

  188. Uh you can find purpose. We were talking

  189. about purpose last week. You can find

  190. your po purpose and still be surrounded

  191. by the wrong influences.

  192. You can survive your pain

  193. and still be in relationship with people

  194. that keep reopening the wound.

  195. Have you been there? One man said this.

  196. He said, "Show me your people and I'll

  197. show you your future."

  198. Man, uh this is this is youth group

  199. stuff, right?

  200. >> Who you hanging out? Who you hanging

  201. around? Don't hang out with the bad

  202. crowd. Can I can I say it's even more

  203. important as you step into adulthood, as

  204. you have a family, you have a job, you

  205. have all of these different

  206. relationships. And I'll tell you this,

  207. the enemy would love, especially when

  208. you found your purpose and you're

  209. drawing near to God, the enemy would

  210. love uh to put the wrong people right in

  211. your path. And so, how do we handle

  212. that? How do we how do we deal with

  213. that? Sometimes the problem isn't just

  214. what we're doing, it's who we're doing

  215. it with.

  216. So I want to talk about people uh who to

  217. get close to and who to create distance

  218. from. Say proximity.

  219. The wrong people can keep you from the

  220. right places

  221. and knock you off the right path.

  222. Before we dive in, I want to ask some

  223. questions.

  224. Not for you to answer out loud.

  225. Who has the loudest voice in your life?

  226. If it's you, you have missed the mark.

  227. Who has the loudest voice in your life?

  228. Let me put it to you this way. When

  229. you're going through crisis and you're

  230. going through pain and you're going

  231. through struggle or or you need that

  232. little piece of wisdom, that unsurity

  233. place, who is it that you run to?

  234. Who do you go to?

  235. Who knows the real you?

  236. Not just the Sunday you.

  237. I've been in church a little while.

  238. >> Oh yeah, I've met two versions of people

  239. on the regular.

  240. >> Oh yeah, I got to know you on Sunday

  241. morning and then you didn't know I was

  242. in the aisle at Kroger and I said, "Man,

  243. I saw you on a Tuesday." And I'm like,

  244. "Whoa, there's a whole another you."

  245. >> Who knows the real you?

  246. Not just the Sunday you.

  247. You know, the way that you answer those

  248. questions

  249. tells me a lot about the direction

  250. you're headed in life because people

  251. matter.

  252. Relationships matter. Today, I want to

  253. give you five people groups.

  254. And God has a lot to say about it.

  255. Matter of fact, I found out in first

  256. service that I have way too much content

  257. to preach in the time allotted.

  258. I don't know who ushers.

  259. >> There's not another service after this.

  260. >> All right. Pastor Jack says there's not

  261. another service after this. All right.

  262. So, we're not beating the Baptist to the

  263. to the buffet today.

  264. I'll keep us concise.

  265. Five people groups. I promise you every

  266. person in your life fits into one of

  267. these categories.

  268. You know, it might make sense

  269. at some point this week even to start to

  270. think about the people in your life,

  271. to think about which category they're

  272. in.

  273. The five people groups.

  274. Number one is scorners.

  275. That's a word we don't use a lot

  276. anymore.

  277. and dagum scorners.

  278. I want to hang out with the scorners.

  279. Sheesh.

  280. It's a Bible word. We're going to talk

  281. about proximity to scorners. And really,

  282. I feel to spend a little bit of extra

  283. time on this.

  284. Proverbs 22:10

    Proverbs 22:10

  285. says this. It says, "Drive out a scorner

  286. and strife will go out and quarreling

  287. and abuse will seize.

  288. Can I tell you that it breaks God's

  289. heart to see his children in a place of

  290. abuse, emotional abuse,

  291. quarreling,

  292. strife.

  293. The Bible says to drive it out, to drive

  294. out the scorner.

  295. There are those that God calls us to

  296. distance ourselves from.

  297. A scorner is often in scripture also

  298. called a scoffer or a mocker.

  299. So what is a scorner?

  300. It's not just someone who disagrees with

  301. you.

  302. Sometimes we especially in this crazy

  303. culture we live. We got this cancel

  304. culture craziness going on and somebody

  305. disagrees with me so I distance myself.

  306. That's not a scorner. If somebody

  307. disagrees with you that's not uh a right

  308. or a license for you to distance

  309. yourself from them.

  310. that was free.

  311. Everybody disagrees sometimes and I have

  312. never that I remember ever found a human

  313. that agrees with everything that I think

  314. I think they should, right?

  315. Some pretty good thoughts going on up

  316. here.

  317. You're never going to find anybody that

  318. agrees with you on everything.

  319. Disagreements happen. A scorner is

  320. somebody who has decided that they're

  321. the final authority in their own life.

  322. And anyone who challenges that becomes

  323. the target of their contempt.

  324. What's the definition of a scorner?

  325. Proverbs 21:24 says, "Mockers are proud

    Proverbs 21:24

  326. and

  327. they act with boundless arrogance."

  328. You ever met that guy?

  329. Arrogant, proud, hotty. They wear it

  330. like a badge. And they don't just debate

  331. you, they mock you.

  332. They don't just debate you. Now listen,

  333. we can disagree and we can be peaceable

  334. and you and I know we can we can talk

  335. about it. This is the way I see it and

  336. it's not the way that you see it and we

  337. can talk, man. At the end of the day, we

  338. can even agree to disagree,

  339. right? Uh scoffers, scorners don't do

  340. that. Uh they they disagree with you and

  341. then they mock you or ridicule you for

  342. it. They don't just correct you, they

  343. belittle you.

  344. They don't just disagree, they're

  345. dismissive.

  346. And here's the thing that makes them

  347. most dangerous is they hate correction.

  348. They hate correction. Proverbs 9:8 says,

    Proverbs 9:8

  349. "Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate

  350. you."

  351. Do not rebuke a mocker

  352. or he will hate you.

  353. If you try to correct a mocker or a

  354. scorner, they don't just reject the

  355. correction, they come after you.

  356. They attack. Jesus said this in Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  357. chapter 7 and verse 6. He said, "Do not

  358. say do not."

  359. >> Do not.

  360. >> Do not throw your pearls before swine.

  361. What's a swine? That's a That's an old

  362. stinky pig.

  363. Do not throw your pearls before swine,

  364. lest they trample them under their feet.

  365. catch this and turn and tear you to

  366. pieces.

  367. What kind of relationships do we have?

  368. We need wisdom.

  369. What are these pearls that Jesus is

  370. talking about? It's speaking of things

  371. that have have high value. It's speaking

  372. of things that are holy. It's your

  373. heart.

  374. You ever been vulnerable with your heart

  375. and really opened up and then somebody

  376. turned and attacked you and trampled

  377. your heart underneath their feet?

  378. That person would be scorning you.

  379. He says, "Cast not your pearls before

  380. swine, lest they turn and rend you, lest

  381. they turn and tear you apart." Have you

  382. ever been vulnerable and shared uh a

  383. piece of yourself only for the other

  384. person to turn and use it as ammunition?

  385. Maybe it was 15, 25 years ago and

  386. they're still using it as ammunition.

  387. Yeah.

  388. Jesus says, "Don't give yourself to

  389. those people. There are people that we

  390. are called to distance ourselves from."

  391. And these pigs,

  392. what Jesus isn't saying is that they're

  393. less valuable humans.

  394. They are humans that value God less.

  395. They're valuable. They just don't have

  396. the same value for God that we do. There

  397. are people who have proven that they

  398. will only mock, trample, and attack. And

  399. listen, we all have a bad day. Amen.

  400. We all have our moments, our little

  401. stinky old flesh rises its head, and we

  402. we get all angry and upset and we attack

  403. and and all that stuff. That's not the

  404. people that we're talking about. We're

  405. talking about this is a disposition.

  406. This is an ongoing unrepented

  407. action

  408. of mockery and attacking.

  409. Proximity isn't about value.

  410. It's about assignment. Say assignment.

  411. Everyone has value in the eyes of God.

  412. That means everyone should have value in

  413. our eyes, but not everyone has the same

  414. access.

  415. Amen.

  416. Scorners find your weakness and they

  417. exploit it.

  418. They make you the problem for pointing

  419. out their problems. It's that victim

  420. mentality.

  421. I love you enough to say something. Man,

  422. it's ugly stuff. And then and then all

  423. of a sudden we're not even talking about

  424. that stuff anymore. Right away they turn

  425. and attack you for something and go,

  426. "Wait a minute, that's not what we're

  427. talking about." They cause strife. They

  428. poison the room. They mock what is holy.

  429. And we're called to love

  430. >> everyone.

  431. The mark of a Christian isn't how well

  432. you love Jesus. It's how well you love

  433. your Judas.

  434. Love is for everybody. Access is not.

  435. Access is not. God never designed you to

  436. walk with everybody the same way. Jesus

  437. didn't walk with everyone the same way.

  438. He had the 70.

  439. He had the 12.

  440. He had the three that he was close with.

  441. And then he had the one whom Jesus

  442. loved.

  443. I want to be able to write that about

  444. me. The one whom Jesus loved.

  445. Different people

  446. require different distance.

  447. Jesus loved everyone, but he didn't walk

  448. with everyone the same.

  449. I like to ask myself the question, am I

  450. giving pearl access to pig behavior?

  451. Do I continue to open myself up and drop

  452. my guard and be vulnerable and offer

  453. what's precious and what's what's holy?

  454. Do I continue to do that to somebody

  455. that just continues to trample and

  456. attack?

  457. Cast not your pearls before swine, lest

  458. they turn and rend you.

  459. Am I calling it loyalty

  460. when it's really just the absence of

  461. boundaries?

  462. Well, they they do that, but I'm just

  463. I'm loyal to them,

  464. but you become the doormat in the

  465. relationship.

  466. Am I speaking to anyone today?

  467. calling it loyalty when it's really just

  468. a lack of boundaries. I want to give

  469. somebody in this house today permission.

  470. You can say, "I love you.

  471. I love you, but you don't get this level

  472. of access to me anymore.

  473. I want to give you permission." And we

  474. don't feel guilty about it.

  475. We know what God's doing.

  476. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else,

    Proverbs 4:23

  477. guard your heart,

  478. for everything you do flows from it."

  479. Do you know that

  480. having that one relationship that has

  481. that negative impact that we continue to

  482. pacify and we continue to coddle and we

  483. continue to allow into our life can have

  484. a negative impact on every other

  485. relationship?

  486. When you say yes to a bad relationship,

  487. you're not allowing yourself enough room

  488. for the good relationships.

  489. Yeah, I've been in those things, man.

  490. It's just it messes with my emotions. It

  491. messes with my thought, that quarreling

  492. and that strife. And man, I just got

  493. attacked. Now, how am I supposed to come

  494. and be fully fully available to the good

  495. people, to the right people that that

  496. have my best interest at hand that are

  497. that are pouring into my life? Or maybe

  498. I'm supposed to be pouring into their

  499. life? How can I do that when I'm

  500. emotionally distraught because of this

  501. one relationship that will not quit?

  502. And I'm not just about preaching flowery

  503. messages to you. Well, we got real

  504. issues of life, real situations going

  505. on.

  506. Boundaries.

  507. Guard your heart.

  508. If they keep trampling what's holy,

  509. tearing you apart,

  510. that's when it's time to put up your

  511. guard and set some boundaries.

  512. Sometimes I've seen people think that

  513. they're under spiritual attack when it's

  514. really just a lack of boundaries.

  515. Matthew 10:14 Jesus said, "And if anyone

    Matthew 10:14

  516. say anyone,

  517. >> if anyone will not receive you or listen

  518. to your word, shake off the dust from

  519. your feet when you leave that house or

  520. town."

  521. Man, if they don't receive you, kick the

  522. dust off your feet and keep it moving.

  523. >> Keep it moving. I ain't got time for it.

  524. The time on earth is short. The Bible

  525. says, "This life is but a midst or a

  526. vapor in the eyes of eternity. I don't

  527. have time for quarreling and strife and

  528. dissension and all that stuff. I got

  529. time for Jesus. I got time for love. I

  530. got time for peace. I got time for

  531. purity. I've got time for spiritual

  532. growth and spiritual. I've got time for

  533. that. But I don't have time for for the

  534. for the pig that wants to keep trampling

  535. me under their feet and attacking me.

  536. >> Look at your neighbor and say, "I got

  537. time for it."

  538. >> Jesus is saying here, he's saying, "Man,

  539. I I've done my part. I'm just not

  540. carrying the dust,

  541. the drama, the rejection into this next

  542. season. Kick the dust off your feet and

  543. keep it moving." You know, Paul preached

  544. about boundaries. uh the Corinthian

  545. church. My goodness, I don't know what

  546. was going on in that church, but there

  547. were some there were some major sin

  548. issues that Paul was dealing with and

  549. and uh we have some young ears in the in

  550. the house. I'm not even going to tell

  551. you what the issue was, but you can read

  552. 1 Corinthians 5 if you want. Heavy issue

  553. going on in the church and and the

  554. church was allowing it. It was they were

  555. just kind of tolerating this this nasty

  556. thing going on in the church world. And

  557. Paul dealt with it. 1 Corinthians 5:4,

    1 Corinthians 5:4

  558. he says, "In the name of the Lord Jesus,

  559. you must call a meeting of the church. I

  560. will be present with you in spirit, and

  561. so will the power of the Lord Jesus.

  562. Then you must throw this man out and

  563. hand him over to Satan."

  564. Woo! Paul,

  565. take it easy, buddy.

  566. Throw this man out. Hand him over to

  567. Satan. So that, say, "So that." So that

  568. >> there's a why behind the what?

  569. >> So that his sinful nature will be

  570. destroyed and he himself will be saved

  571. on the day the Lord returns.

  572. He says, "You're boasting about this.

  573. It's terrible. Don't you realize that

  574. this sin is like a little yeast that

  575. spreads through the whole batch of

  576. dough. Get rid of the old yeast by

  577. removing this wicked person from among

  578. you."

  579. Man, I think about the the umpire on the

  580. Bailey. He says, he says, "You're out of

  581. here." Right? Sometimes you just got to

  582. get that spirit in your life, man.

  583. Enough is enough.

  584. Enough is enough. A boundary line is

  585. drawn.

  586. Paul tells the church, he says, "Hand

  587. over to Satan."

  588. See how he likes that?

  589. Hand him over to Satan. There's a why

  590. behind the what? So that his flesh, a

  591. sinful nature will be destroyed and then

  592. he'll be saved when Christ returns.

  593. That's not cursing them, that's blessing

  594. them.

  595. 1 Timothy 1:20, talking about a couple

    1 Timothy 1:20

  596. of other guys, he says, uh, he handed

  597. Himenius and Alexander over to Satan

  598. that they may learn not to blaspheme.

  599. Sounds harsh

  600. until you see the why. This is not

  601. punishment for revenge.

  602. It's discipline for redemption.

  603. Sometimes the most loving thing that we

  604. can do is stop cushioning the

  605. consequence of other people's sin.

  606. Mercy does not make an allowance for sin

  607. to continue. I'm just going to show them

  608. mercy.

  609. Mercy doesn't make an allowance for sin

  610. to continue.

  611. Doesn't make an allowance for the abuse

  612. to continue.

  613. As long as we keep rescuing

  614. them, softening the landing, paying the

  615. price, they'll never feel the full

  616. weight of their choices. And they never

  617. come to themselves. You guys remember

  618. last week we're talking about the

  619. prodal, prodical son, that God didn't

  620. send a a team of counselors out to the

  621. prodal.

  622. Maybe if we just talk to him,

  623. maybe he'll he'll come to his senses. He

  624. just he just needs some extra grace and

  625. mercy. God didn't send a team out to

  626. him. He sent pain.

  627. >> Remember the pain preached.

  628. >> Sometimes we need to feel the weight of

  629. our own choices, the weight of our own

  630. consequences with nobody else uh

  631. coddling me for me to catch the weight

  632. of this and go, man, I I got to I got to

  633. do something different because the

  634. weight of this is heavier than I can

  635. than I can carry. And so I've got to get

  636. myself back to Jesus.

  637. What I've learned is that God can do in

  638. one season of rock bottom

  639. infinitely more than what we can do in

  640. five years of coddling somebody.

  641. >> Mercy is not an allowance for sin.

  642. Closing

  643. the gate, stepping back

  644. is not you throwing them away. It's you

  645. getting out of God's way.

  646. Titus 3:10 says, "Warn a divisive person

    Titus 3:10

  647. once and then twice. After that, have

  648. nothing to do with them."

  649. Not your obligation anymore. Romans

    Romans 16:17

  650. 16:17 says, "Watch out for those who

  651. cause divisions and create obstacles

  652. contrary to the doctrine you've been

  653. taught."

  654. He says, "Avoid them."

  655. Avoid them. I'm just preaching a word

  656. today that's not popular.

  657. boundaries.

  658. Told you I got too much in my notes. I

  659. got to skip a couple pages.

  660. Proximity to scorners.

  661. You can write this down if you're taking

  662. notes. If you mislabel people, you'll

  663. mishandle people.

  664. Number two is proximity to sinners. Now,

  665. scorners are sinners, but not all

  666. sinners are scorners.

  667. And so, we get to be able to

  668. compartmentalize or separate and

  669. understand what my responsibility is.

  670. What should my proximity to sinners be?

  671. Can I say this? Sinners are not those

  672. people. They're our assignment.

  673. They're our assignment.

  674. Luke 5:30. And the Pharisees and the

    Luke 5:30

  675. scribes grumbled

  676. at his disciples, saying, "Why do you

  677. eat and drink with tax collectors and

  678. sinners?"

  679. Jesus answered them,

  680. "Those who are well have no need of a

  681. physician,

  682. but those who are sick. I have not come

  683. to call the righteous, but the sinners

  684. to repentance.

  685. Jesus didn't apologize

  686. for who he was eating with. He explained

  687. his mission,

  688. his assignment. Listen, he was accused.

  689. Jesus was accused of being hanging out

  690. with these drunkards and glutton,

  691. right? He

  692. What kind of rabbi? What kind of What

  693. kind of a Christian gentleman is that?

  694. He's hanging out with these with these

  695. tax collectors and these the drunks.

  696. Doesn't mean that Jesus was sitting

  697. there getting drunk, but man, he's

  698. building relationships. Some of my

  699. favorite things to do are to meet people

  700. that are lost out in the world. I don't

  701. know if you guys have ever uh met me

  702. before, but I've never met a stranger.

  703. Never met a stranger. I'll kick up a

  704. conversation with just about anyone.

  705. Man, I love being out in the world just

  706. ask getting to know people. Hey, what

  707. what do you do for work? Get to love on

  708. people a little bit, bless people a

  709. little bit. And if I'm not received,

  710. man, I just kick the old dust off my

  711. feet and keep it moving. And what I'm

  712. not doing is being the weird Christian.

  713. Uh, do you have do you have a couple

  714. minutes? I could talk to you about our

  715. Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  716. Golly, church, knock that business off.

  717. Carrying tracks around. They're going to

  718. tell them they're going to burn in hell.

  719. You guys seen those, Sam? I'm so glad

  720. those are in the past.

  721. >> I used to be given a stack of them and

  722. have to go out on the streets talking to

  723. the prostitutes and drug addicts. You're

  724. going to burn in hell.

  725. Yeah.

  726. Just go love people. Get to know people.

  727. Know that they're the assignment, not

  728. not the problem. Amen.

  729. >> Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, "You're the

    Matthew 5:14

  730. light of the world." Like a city on a

  731. hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one

  732. lights a lamp and puts it under a

  733. basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a

  734. stand where it gives light to everyone

  735. in the house. In the same way, let your

  736. good deeds shine out for all to see. So

  737. that everyone say everyone,

  738. >> everyone,

  739. >> everyone will praise your heavenly

  740. father. Light isn't very effective

  741. unless it's shining in the dark.

  742. >> That means we as believers go out to the

  743. dark places and shine our light. I'm not

  744. negatively impacted by the darkness. A

  745. matter of fact, the light of God on the

  746. inside of me overwhelms the darkness.

  747. And the darkness doesn't even understand

  748. it. Amen. But but I'm going to go let my

  749. little light shine. Oh my I'm about to

  750. sing a song.

  751. >> Yeah. Hide it under a bush. No, I'm

  752. going to let it shine. Come on.

  753. >> My goodness.

  754. We got to get out there and let our

  755. light shine. And sometimes we as

  756. Christians get out in the world and we

  757. we look at all the sinners like they're

  758. a burden. We hear the table next to us

  759. and they're talking about craziness or

  760. whatever and we go feel dirty just being

  761. man. Get saved.

  762. >> Get saved. Know your assignment. Know

  763. your mission. That that's that's who God

  764. that's who Jesus is here for.

  765. >> Amen.

  766. >> Part of a old legalistic church model

  767. years ago that we don't listen to

  768. secular music and we don't go here and

  769. we don't go there. We don't go. If they

  770. even serve alcohol, I'm not going to go

  771. into that place. That's where the drunks

  772. are.

  773. >> Golly.

  774. Think that's where Jesus wants us?

  775. Let me give you some permission. Go hang

  776. out with some drunks this week. Amen.

  777. Well, tell them about Jesus. Go love on

  778. him.

  779. Great commission says go. Say go.

  780. >> Jesus said it. He says go therefore and

  781. make disciples.

  782. Your assignment is to intentionally find

  783. lost, hurting people and love them into

  784. the kingdom. Sinners are the people that

  785. I love on purpose.

  786. Let me give you a caveat.

  787. Man, I don't know if we're going to make

  788. it through all five. We're going to make

  789. it through all five.

  790. >> Promise.

  791. >> Last two might be kind of quick, but

  792. we're going somewhere. Stick with me,

  793. folks. Let me give you a caveat to

  794. friendship with sinners and even

  795. friendship with believers. Anyone?

  796. Galatians 6:1 says, "Brother brothers,

    Galatians 6:1

  797. if anyone is caught in a transgression

  798. or a sin, you who are spiritual should

  799. restore him in a spirit of gentleness."

  800. Catch this. Keep watch on yourself lest

  801. you too be tempted.

  802. Now, if you were just you were a drunk

  803. three months ago and you're just getting

  804. free from alcohol, can I tell you don't

  805. go hang out with the drunks cuz you

  806. might get tempted.

  807. But if you've been clean and sober and

  808. God delivered you from that and you've

  809. been you've been uh away from that for

  810. 40 years, don't keep yourself in a

  811. little box. I can't go here cuz there's

  812. that's bondage, man.

  813. >> Not just talking to the drunks. I'm

  814. talking to everyone. Every type of sin,

  815. every type of temptation. Now listen,

  816. we're called. We have an assignment to

  817. go and to let that light shine. Unless

  818. I'm tempted by that, man, I got to use

  819. wisdom because because I'm not willing

  820. to forfeit my own salvation to to hang

  821. out with you. Amen.

  822. >> Sometimes we have that person at work or

  823. that old friend

  824. and you think you're witnessing to them.

  825. Every time you're around them, you cuss

  826. a little bit more. You drink too much.

  827. You compromise more. That's not mission.

  828. That's called compromise.

  829. Keep watch on yourself lest you too be

  830. tempted.

  831. Number three, proximity to seekers.

  832. Now, here's the hope. We're letting our

  833. little light shine. Everybody stick up

  834. your finger. We're letting our little

  835. light shine before men. Jesus is shining

  836. through us. And man, we're we're we're

  837. blessing some sinners and uh blessing

  838. some seekers. Hopefully, these uh

  839. sinners will become seekers.

  840. >> Amen.

  841. Psalm 34:8 says, "Oh, taste and see that

    Psalms 34:8

  842. the Lord is good.

  843. Taste and see that the Lord is good."

  844. Man, I want the the presence of God

  845. radiating in my life, power of God. I

  846. want the fruit of the Holy Spirit that

  847. when I'm out and my light shining in a

  848. dark place that other people can taste

  849. and see that this God that I serve

  850. tastes really, really good. Matter of

  851. fact, if you get a taste of God, an

  852. authentic taste of God, you'll realize

  853. that nothing else satisfies.

  854. So, let them taste of your life. Some of

  855. the best disciplehip I've ever had was

  856. not somebody preaching at me. It was me

  857. evaluating their life. I'm thankful for

  858. men and women of God that that had me by

  859. a generation of the faith and they

  860. figured some things out and I'm able to

  861. watch their life and and see them and

  862. I'm drawn to that. I go, man, they have

  863. something that I don't have. They have

  864. something that I really aspire to be

  865. like and and how do I do that? I want to

  866. hang out with that guy. Be that person

  867. that seekers want to hang out with.

  868. Taste and see.

  869. Sometimes we get

  870. so spiritual, we're no earthly good. We

  871. get so religious that we forget the

  872. assignment.

  873. I've watched older saints talking to

  874. seekers, newer saints,

  875. and the seeker will have a question.

  876. Maybe they're confused on a doctrine or

  877. a theology in the old guy. I don't know

  878. why they always have the turkey gobbler.

  879. Oh, let me tell you that's not what the

  880. Bible says. Let me tell you something.

  881. Real esquetology. And I'm going, just

  882. shut up, dude. Shut up.

  883. >> Shut up. Cuz you're trying to win the

  884. fight, not win a soul.

  885. >> Amen.

  886. >> Oh my good. I almost

  887. >> You're trying to win the fight, not win

  888. a soul. That's

  889. >> right.

  890. >> Just love them. Love them. They'll

  891. figure, you know, I had such strong

  892. doctrine my first five years of

  893. salvation.

  894. I didn't know anything about anything.

  895. But I was seeking. I was pursuing. And I

  896. needed people to love me into the

  897. revelation.

  898. You'll never argue them in. You'll never

  899. debate them in. You're going to love

  900. them in. Invite them close enough to

  901. taste and see

  902. that the Lord is good.

  903. God will do the rest.

  904. >> Number four is proximity to saints. Look

  905. at that. We're moving quick now.

  906. >> So proud of myself. We're getting right

  907. through this. Hallelujah.

  908. Number four, proximity to saints. This

  909. is other believers.

  910. So hopefully our life is having an

  911. impact

  912. where the scorners can go do what they

  913. do, but the sinners and the seekers are

  914. becoming the saints.

  915. It's not for the church

  916. alone. It's not for the pastor alone.

  917. Jesus said, "You go and you make

  918. disciples. Go love on people. Go

  919. encourage people." Man, Easter's coming

  920. up. Invite them to Easter Sunday.

  921. Hopefully, they become the saints. But

  922. then we have proximity to saints.

  923. Saints, I'll say this, are not perfect,

  924. but saints are being perfected.

  925. Especially new believers. Sometimes

  926. we'll get in the church and

  927. evaluating the Christians,

  928. just a bunch of hypocrites.

  929. Well, hey, we got room for one more.

  930. >> All right.

  931. They're supposed to be a Christian.

  932. They've been I can't believe they said

  933. it this way. Man, they're they're not

  934. perfect. They're being perfected.

  935. >> You're not perfect. If you think you

  936. are, show up Wednesday night. We're

  937. doing Pride detox. We'll knock that

  938. right out of you.

  939. We're being perfected.

  940. My pastor used to say, man, we'd put him

  941. on a pedestal. This guy had a an

  942. anointing, a spiritual general, father

  943. in the faith anointing. Uh you just wow.

  944. And he would say, "If you get close

  945. enough to me, you'll you'll find my

  946. faults."

  947. I got close enough to him.

  948. Did you, Pastor Dan? I got close enough

  949. to him.

  950. I had to process that, man. I saw some

  951. shortcomings, some failures.

  952. He's not perfect after all.

  953. That's where grace and mercy comes in.

  954. Hey, I'm not perfect. You're not

  955. perfect. You're being perfected, but I

  956. love you enough to shoot straight with

  957. you when I see the imperfections.

  958. Encourage you along the way. Bible says,

  959. "Let us consider how we can spur one

  960. another on towards love and good works.

  961. M.

  962. So these saints, they're people in

  963. pursuit. They're people who have given

  964. their life to Christ and they're people

  965. that have shown evidence. Say evidence.

  966. >> Anyone can say, "I'm a Christian." Man,

  967. they're all over. They're all over

  968. America.

  969. >> I'm a Christian.

  970. Okay.

  971. Nice tree. Where's the fruit?

  972. Where's the fruit?

  973. There's evidence of Christianity.

  974. Jesus said, "You'll they'll know that

  975. you're my followers, my disciples by the

  976. love that you have one for another,

  977. the fruit that you're bearing for the

  978. kingdom of God." Jesus said this. He

  979. said seven, Matthew 7:15, he says,

    Matthew 7:15

  980. "Beware." Say, "Beware.

  981. >> Beware of false prophets."

  982. Ah, had so many people

  983. try to speak into my life.

  984. Crazy folks, man. False prophets trying

  985. to guide my life. Jesus said, "Beware of

  986. false prophets who come to you in

  987. sheep's clothing." Now, a lot of times

  988. this scripture is used just for the

  989. pastor of the church. He's a sheep in

  990. wolf's clothing. Got to watch out for

  991. Steve Ferdick. He's a sheep in wolf's

  992. clothing. Like, I don't know. I kind of

  993. like Steve. He's preaches pretty good

  994. stuff.

  995. It's not shepherd's clothing. They come

  996. to you in sheep's clothing. This will be

  997. the brother or sister in the faith that

  998. has a word from the Lord for you.

  999. Mhm. Yeah.

1000. I'll start preaching here in a minute.

1001. Word for the L from the Lord for you.

1002. went a couple years ago trying to trying

1003. to drive this whole church a certain

1004. direction and everything was have a word

1005. from the Lord for you. Have a word from

  1006. the Lord for you.

1007. The spirit itself bears witness with my

1008. spirit that we're the children of God. I

1009. have enough discernment. I know my

1010. shepherd's voice. Amen. And I look for

  1011. evidence.

1012. >> Show me the fruit.

1013. Be careful who you let speak into your

1014. life is what Jesus is saying. Beware of

1015. false prophets. These are the people

1016. that take the title Christian. They come

1017. to you in sheep's clothing. But he says,

1018. Jesus says, but inwardly they're

1019. ravenous wolves. You recognize them by

  1020. their fruit.

1021. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or

1022. figs from thistles? So every healthy

1023. tree bears good fruit, but the diseased

1024. tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree

1025. cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a

1026. diseased tree bear good fruit. Every

1027. tree that does not bear good fruit,

1028. catch this, is cut down, thrown into the

1029. fire. Thus you will recognize them by

  1030. their fruit.

1031. You will recognize them by their fruit.

1032. Saints are people who bear good fruit

1033. for the kingdom and who build me up.

  1034. Ephesians 5, I'm sorry, Ephesians 4:16

    Ephesians 4:16

1035. talking about the body of Christ, the

1036. church, the assembly of the believers.

1037. It says the whole body joined and held

1038. together by every joint with which it is

1039. equipped when each part is working

  1040. properly

1041. makes the body grow that it builds

1042. itself up in love. That's the church.

  1043. That's the saints. We're building each

  1044. other up in love.

1045. Come to trying to tear me down.

1046. We're not designed to do life outside of

  1047. the body of Christ.

1048. We need a body of believers. We need

  1049. Christians in our lives.

1050. >> I watch church at home Sunday morning.

  1051. I don't need to go. Okay.

  1052. All right.

1053. I need Christians in my life, man. I

1054. need people that going to stir me up.

1055. Having a bad day. I want somebody to

  1056. encourage me, man.

1057. >> Going through it. I want somebody when I

1058. see somebody I see one of you

1059. struggling. I want to say, "Hey, my

1060. goodness, I love you. God loves you

1061. today, man. I want to stir other people

1062. up. We need each other. We need each

1063. other." When each part is working

1064. properly, makes the body grow so it

1065. builds itself up in love.

1066. You cannot be built up in isolation.

1067. Man, look at your neighbor and say,

  1068. "We're bodybuilders.

  1069. We're bodybuilders,

  1070. not that kind.

1071. We want to build up the body. Even the

1072. strongest bodybuilders need a spotter

  1073. from time to time.

  1074. Galatians 6:2 says, "Bear one another's

    Galatians 6:2

1075. burdens and so fulfill the law of

  1076. Christ."

1077. That word burden means that weight

1078. that's a little too much for us.

1079. older I get, the less I like carrying

1080. heavy things. I used to have something

1081. to prove and like, watch this. I'll lift

1082. this up. Now I'm like, there anyone in

  1083. their 20s here? Because I don't feel

  1084. like

1085. >> lifting this thing, right?

  1086. >> But isn't it nice when something's

1087. heavy, man, to, you know, have somebody

1088. else come along and just lift the

  1089. weight?

1090. That's the body of Christ. Lift the

  1091. weight.

1092. something threatens to take you under or

  1093. push you down.

1094. Others come along and help pick it up.

1095. There's supernatural strength among the

  1096. body of Christ.

  1097. Don't worry, I'm looking through my

  1098. notes again.

1099. Number five is proximity to shepherds.

  1100. Proximity to shepherds.

1101. You know, I just I kind of view it this

1102. way. You know, I have the symbol of the

1103. cross, Christ hanging on the cross, and

1104. and brothers and sisters, the saints are

1105. kind of that horizontal relationships.

1106. It's like, hey, we're in this together,

1107. and we want to encourage each other and

1108. and hold each other up. And then the

1109. seekers are they're on their way up.

  1110. They're they're getting ready to join

1111. the the brothers and sisters in the

  1112. faith. And there that's that's the

1113. people that we that we get to pull up

1114. and help help really lift up. And then

1115. sinners, they're down there a little bit

1116. ways. We got to stretch my back, get

1117. down there a little bit further for the

1118. sinner because they're kind of hard to

1119. be around sometimes. But the shepherds

1120. are the ones that pull us up. Amen.

1121. And I don't want you to confuse this.

1122. Jesus Christ is the head of the church.

1123. There's no substitute for that.

  1124. But

1125. God from Genesis to Revelation, we've

1126. seen how God has called specific ones to

  1127. lead among the body,

1128. to be a spokesman, to be a blessing, to

  1129. be an encouragement,

  1130. shepherds.

  1131. He's the good shepherd.

1132. Called some of us to be undersheperds.

1133. Paul said this. He said, "Follow me

  1134. as I follow Christ.

1135. Follow me." You know, you have to have a

1136. lot of faith in Paul to be able to just

1137. take that at face value. Follow me as I

1138. follow Christ. Man, I've been around men

1139. and women of faith. Again, they they've

  1140. got it. There's a connection. There's an

  1141. anointing. There's a grace on their

1142. life. I want to hang out with that guy.

1143. Paul said, "Follow me as I follow

  1144. Christ."

1145. He said in another portion of scripture,

1146. he said, "I became your father through

1147. the gospel of Jesus Christ."

  1148. Paul wasn't their father. Paul didn't

  1149. even have kids.

1150. But through the gospel, he became a

  1151. father-like anointing in their life, a

1152. mentor. Whose voice is louder than

1153. yours? Who can speak into your life? Who

1154. has a voice loud enough to correct you

  1155. when you're when you're off track?

1156. I believe this. Every pastor needs a

  1157. pastor.

1158. >> I got a lot of them. And I pull on them.

1159. Man, I like calling some of them up. I

1160. like when they call me, great leaders,

  1161. powerful. They've been a blessing. And

1162. they call me up. They go, "How you

1163. doing?" Doing good. How's your wife? How

1164. the kids? Doing great. They go, "Are you

1165. treating your wife?" Good. I kind of

1166. like that question. I don't know. You

1167. might have to call and ask her. I think

  1168. I'm doing all right.

1169. Sometimes I'm going through crisis.

  1170. Sometimes I have a weight to bear that's

  1171. too much for me

1172. and I'm thankful that I have people to

  1173. call.

  1174. I say, "Man, it's just I don't can't do

  1175. it.

1176. good shepherds to help guide us,

  1177. direct us. I'll say this, I don't assume

  1178. to be everyone's

1179. shepherd or pastor in Grace Summit

1180. Church. I preached to you on Sunday and

  1181. I hope it's a blessing to you.

1182. But good shephering requires good

  1183. relationship.

1184. It's unrealistic for me to pastor 250 of

  1185. you and counting.

1186. Next year it's going to be 350.

  1187. We'll see what God's up to.

1188. But have people in your life that have a

  1189. mentor, coaching, pastoring, leading

1190. voice that have a relationship with God

1191. that's superior to yours. They really

1192. connect with God and they're for you.

1193. They love you. They'll speak into you.

  1194. Hebrews 13:17

    Hebrews 13:17

  1195. talking about these people.

1196. The Bible says they keep watch over your

1197. souls as those who have to give an

  1198. account.

  1199. That's a heavy burden

1200. to have to give an account for other

  1201. people's souls.

  1202. 1 Thessalonians 5:12 says, "Acknowledge

    1 Thessalonians 5:12

1203. those who work hard among you,

1204. who care for you in the Lord."

1205. Shepherds are spiritual leaders God has

1206. placed over you to protect you, to feed

  1207. you, to correct you,

  1208. to guide you.

1209. And that happens in proximity in

  1210. relationship.

1211. The shepherd's job is not to control

  1212. you.

1213. It's to watch out for the wolves,

  1214. offer you greener pastures,

1215. to quiet the water so you can get a

  1216. drink.

1217. I'll say this. If it looks like control

  1218. and manipulation,

  1219. that's not Christlike shephering.

  1220. That's not Christlike shephering.

1221. Good shepherds lead like Jesus by

  1222. example

  1223. with humility

  1224. for your good

1225. and draw you closer to the father.

1226. And can I say that God doesn't give you

1227. a pastor or a shepherd to replace the

1228. voice of the Holy Spirit in your life,

1229. but to confirm the Holy Spirit in your

  1230. life

  1231. to clarify it.

1232. Sometimes people get church content, but

1233. they don't get church covering,

  1234. protection, blessing.

1235. had a lot of people

  1236. and I'm their pastor

  1237. only in crisis

  1238. only in crisis.

1239. But they don't want the pastor when

  1240. they're in compromise.

1241. A lot of people want access but not

  1242. accountability.

1243. Can I tell you that I need people to

  1244. hold me accountable?

  1245. I need accountability.

1246. A lot of people want access, but not

  1247. accountability.

1248. I'll ask the worship team to join me up

  1249. here.

1250. Hebrews 13:17 says, "Obey your leaders

    Hebrews 13:17

  1251. and submit to them,

1252. for they are keeping watch over your

1253. souls as those who will give an

  1254. account."

  1255. M

1256. the Bible teaches a culture of honor for

  1257. those called to lead.

1258. First Thessalonians 5:12, he says, "We

    1 Thessalonians 5:12

1259. ask you brothers to respect," say

  1260. respect

1261. >> those who labor among you and are over

1262. you in the Lord and admonish you and to

1263. esteem them very highly in love because

  1264. of their work.

1265. It looks like control and manipulation.

  1266. That's not Christlike shephering.

1267. Church hurts a real thing.

  1268. If you've had a shepherd or a pastor

1269. hurt you in the past,

1270. give that to God. That's between them

1271. and God. But don't let that wound from

1272. yesterday build a wall from what God's

1273. doing in your life today.

1274. God has a heart for you. They'll answer

1275. to God with how they handled you or

1276. mishandled you. But you answer to God

1277. for how you handled the leaders God has

  1278. placed in your life.

1279. Let me give you a recap

1280. and then I'll go sit down.

  1281. Scorners

1282. remind me to guard my heart.

1283. They remind me to have boundaries.

1284. Sinners remind me why why I'm still

1285. here. I have an assignment to be a light

1286. shining in a dark place. Seekers remind

1287. me what God can do.

1288. Jesus said, "If I be lifted up, I'll

1289. draw all men unto myself."

1290. Saints sharpen who I am. They help build

1291. me up and encourage me. And shepherds

  1292. protect where I'm going.

1293. Before I pray, I want to ask three

1294. questions. Again, don't answer out loud.

1295. Just answer in your heart or maybe pray

  1296. about it this week.

1297. Who do you need to move closer to?

1298. Who are those that are for you and for

1299. God that we've had too much distance?

1300. Or maybe it's a seeker or a sinner. Who

1301. do you need to move closer to

1302. who do you need to step away from?

1303. Who needs some distance or some

  1304. boundaries in your life?

1305. The last question is who do I need to

  1306. pursue?

1307. Who do I really need to chase down and

  1308. build relationship with?

1309. Father, we thank you, Lord, that you're

  1310. a good God.

1311. Father, we thank you, Lord, that you've

1312. called us to more than just serving you

1313. on an island, but God, you've called us

1314. to people. Father, give us wisdom and

  1315. understanding, enlightenment. Father, to

1316. know who we are in your kingdom and who

  1317. we are to others.

1318. Father, I thank you, God, that you fill

1319. us with the light of heaven. And Lord, I

1320. pray that you set us like a city on a

1321. hill, God. That our light would shine

1322. before men, Father, that they would be

  1323. drawn close to you.

1324. Father, I pray that you give us the

1325. heart of understanding for those that we

1326. need to have boundaries with.

1327. Create distance from, God. Give us the

  1328. strength

1329. to draw the line in the sand, God,

1330. knowing that when we're handing them

1331. over, we're handing them really to you.

  1332. Father, I thank you,

1333. God, for this body of believers being

1334. the healthiest body of Jesus Christ to

1335. exist yet. Father, that we would get it,

1336. God, that relationships would run strong

1337. and deep in this house. I thank you for

1338. this family of believers, God, this

  1339. family of God.

1340. Help us, Father, to live in such a way

  1341. that honors you.

1342. So, Lord, we pray blessing over each one

1343. now in Jesus name. And God's people

  1344. said, "Amen.
