  1. Okay.

  2. Oh yeah.

  3. Okay.

  4. Amen.

  5. Heat. Heat. N.

  6. Woo. Well, good morning.

  7. It's not quite the same starting off

  8. without a hallelujah.

  9. Right. All right. Hey, I know we miss

  10. Pastor Ben. He's out of town today. Uh

  11. my name is Pastor Mark Gross. I'm the

  12. worship pastor here at Grace Summit

  13. Church. It's an honor to bring the word

  14. today. Um so I've been doing this for a

  15. long time as far as worship is concerned

  16. and really leading worship and and being

  17. on that side of it. So in in 2002,

  18. I started leading worship back in Crave,

  19. which was our youth group back in the

  20. day for those that remember way back in

  21. the day, 2002.

  22. which is when I graduated from high

  23. school.

  24. >> So for those of you who were my Sunday

  25. school teachers,

  26. that's how old you are.

  27. >> So I started leading worship in 2002 and

  28. really never stopped. So I started in

  29. the youth and then I graduated to big

  30. church and so led in big church for a

  31. while. Really more underneath like the

  32. main worship leader there. Went from

  33. there uh led worship in Brooklyn,

  34. Michigan for a couple of years. Um,

  35. originally it was supposed to be a

  36. six-month internship, but it turned into

  37. me being there for two years, leading

  38. worship there for them. Came back to

  39. Fort Wayne to play Jesus in an Easter

  40. musical.

  41. >> That's a true story. Came back and

  42. played Jesus in an Easter musical. Kind

  43. of stayed here. Got back onto the

  44. worship team at that church. Helped lead

  45. worship from there to the inception of

  46. Grace Summit Church. So, I've been here

  47. since before day one helping to lead

  48. worship. And then the the lead uh

  49. worship leader left Grace Summit and and

  50. moved on. And then I helped kind of lead

  51. in tandem with another worship leader.

  52. We were kind of tag teaming it. Uh and

  53. then that leader moved on as well. And

  54. then at that point, Pastor Larry at the

  55. time was like, "Well, do you want to do

  56. it?" And I was like, "Well, I'm the only

  57. one left, so I guess I better." So from

  58. that point, like that's what led me to

  59. kind of being the worship leader. And

  60. then in 2012,

  61. thanks Carla. Love you, too. In 2012, I

  62. got licensed and ordained and so then

  63. became an official worship pastor. Uh

  64. I've been doing it since then. So that's

  65. from 2002 to now uh 24 years. So around

  66. November of last year, I made a

  67. realization that I was starting to get

  68. tired. I was starting to get worn out.

  69. And

  70. I was glad that I recognized that cuz I

  71. was moving towards burnout. Has anyone

  72. dealt with burnout before? You just go

  73. and you go and you go until you

  74. literally you can't go anymore. And I

  75. felt myself kind of approaching that

  76. place as I was sitting on Saturday

  77. night. I was working on something for

  78. church and I was like, man, I'm really

  79. not enjoying this right now. Like

  80. something something's wrong. And so, um,

  81. for those that don't know, as the

  82. worship pastor, it's not my only

  83. responsibility. So, even the weeks when

  84. I'm off, I'm preaching or I'm handling

  85. the creative side of things, not doing

  86. that anymore. Shout out to Whitney.

  87. She's been creative, so I don't have to

  88. do that anymore. I put together all the

  89. slides for worship and for the sermon,

  90. so you guys don't have to bring your

  91. physical Bibles, though we wish that you

  92. would.

  93. And I was just getting exhausted and I

  94. was getting close to burnout. So, I

  95. talked to Pastor Ben in November and

  96. asked for a sbatical and he graciously

  97. allowed me to take six weeks off at the

  98. beginning of this year. Not sure if any

  99. of you noticed I was gone, but I was

  100. gone for six weeks.

  101. That's why they don't let you come up

  102. here by yourself,

  103. Ethan.

  104. Anyways,

  105. where'd the Holy Spirit go? I need to

  106. come on back.

  107. Hey. All right. Um,

  108. so I took six weeks off really to um

  109. to rest, to receive, and to restore kind

  110. of my own passion and God's calling on

  111. my life as the worship pastor here at

  112. Grace Summit. So during the sbatical, I

  113. attended a conference called the worship

  114. together conference. My wife pointed out

  115. I actually have the worship together

  116. sticker on my computer here along with

  117. Sweet Water of course which every

  118. worship leader has to have on their

  119. computer is Sweetwater.

  120. There was so there was a session of this

  121. worship together conference and it was

  122. one of it was the first night that we

  123. were there. Um, and this session blew my

  124. mind and completely reset a lot of how I

  125. thought about my own faith, my own

  126. relationship with God the Father, and

  127. ultimately with Jesus. So, that's a

  128. little bit of a teaser. So, you have to

  129. stay awake for today's sermon because

  130. we're going to resolve that. That what

  131. blew my mind. We're going to get to that

  132. in a little bit. I'll let you in on that

  133. experience as I share the message that

  134. God's laid on my heart for today. So, a

  135. little teaser for that. We're going to

  136. be spending a lot of time in the word

  137. today. So, if you've got your physical

  138. Bible, you can practice flipping your

  139. pages or you can read the screens.

  140. Apologize to Daphne. There are 103

  141. screens today. I'm not lying. There's

  142. 103 slides to go through, but we're we

  143. made it through first service with

  144. plenty of time to spare. So, we're going

  145. to spend some time in the word today.

  146. So, Jesus

  147. is going around uh Judea, Samaria. He's

  148. walking around. He's wandering about.

  149. He's teaching in villages and towns

  150. about God and about the kingdom of God.

  151. And we're going to pick up in Luke

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  152. chapter 15. So we're going to be staying

  153. kind of Luke 15 through through the rest

  154. of today starting in verse one. Says,

  155. "Now the tax collectors and sinners were

  156. all drawing near him to Jesus. And the

  157. Pharisees and the scribes grumbled,

  158. saying, this man receives sinners and

  159. eats with them." So Jesus

  160. is offering a message that many of these

  161. sinners and these tax collectors have

  162. never heard before.

  163. He talks about grace and mercy and

  164. forgiveness and those things especially

  165. for those who were considered less than

  166. by the religious leaders. So people that

  167. were looked down upon by the religious

  168. leaders, Jesus was focusing on and Jesus

  169. was offering them this message of grace

  170. and mercy and forgiveness.

  171. In doing so, Jesus spent a lot of time

  172. with these people with sinners and with

  173. tax collectors who weren't much better

  174. according to the Jewish customs and

  175. beliefs of the time. So these people

  176. naturally they're going to gather near

  177. Jesus. The guy who gives them hope. The

  178. guy who speaks to them in a way that

  179. these other religious leaders don't.

  180. They want what he has to offer instead

  181. of what the scribes and Pharisees offer.

  182. Condemnation and ridicule.

  183. So the religious guys didn't like what

  184. Jesus was doing. They didn't like that

  185. he was hanging around these sinners and

  186. these tax collectors. And they let Jesus

  187. know. And here's what's interesting.

  188. They don't tell Jesus that they don't

  189. like that he's hanging around with

  190. sinners. Like if you look back, it just

  191. says that they grumbled and they said,

  192. "This man receives sinners and eats with

  193. them." So just imagine like I think they

  194. said it just loud enough for Jesus to

  195. hear them, but not loud enough that it

  196. seemed like they were talking directly

  197. to him. Uh it's like Facebook. Who's So

  198. who's on Facebook? Who's ever made a

  199. passive aggressive post? Somebody did

  200. something to you and you had to post

  201. about it on Facebook, but you didn't

  202. want to say their name, but whoever did

  203. it knew who they were, right? That's

  204. what the Pharisees are doing here. They

  205. put up a passive aggressive post on

  206. Facebook. Jesus catches it as he's

  207. scrolling his feed.

  208. He overhears what they're saying to him.

  209. I lost my spot because I had to scroll

  210. back up to the scripture. Hey,

  211. so he he captures this and Jesus

  212. overhears what they're saying. And Jesus

  213. makes a decision. So he hears this from

  214. the scribes and the Pharisees. He's

  215. hanging out with the sinners and the tax

  216. collectors. And he makes a decision.

  217. He's going to try to explain. He's going

  218. to give the why behind the what,

  219. why he is doing what he's doing, why why

  220. Jesus is hanging out with sinners and

  221. tax collectors. And he wants to teach

  222. this crowd that's around him. He wants

  223. to teach them something. Whenever he

  224. wants to teach people something, Jesus

  225. almost exclusively when he's teaching

  226. does so in parables. And parables are

  227. stories they would understand in the

  228. context that they live in. So similar to

  229. the Facebook story that I just told you,

  230. that's a parable. We're teaching

  231. something that only those people in that

  232. context would understand. So that's why

  233. it's important when we're in the word,

  234. we understand the context of what we're

  235. reading. Who's this writing to and

  236. what's it really about? And so as Jesus

  237. talks in these parables, he's talking in

  238. a way that the his audience understands.

  239. So we're going to dive a little bit

  240. deeper into that as we go through this

  241. scripture.

  242. He tells

  243. stories,

  244. all similar, but each have kind of a

  245. different focus of of what Jesus is

  246. talking about. And he starts with this

  247. one in Luke 15:4.

    Luke 15:4

  248. He says, "What man of you having a

  249. hundred sheep, if he has lost one of

  250. them, does not leave the 99 in the open

  251. country and go after the one that is

  252. lost until he finds it? And when he has

  253. found it, he lays it on his shoulders,

  254. rejoicing. And when he comes home, he

  255. calls together his friends and his

  256. neighbors, saying to them, "Rejoice with

  257. me, for I have found my sheep that was

  258. lost. Just so I tell you, there will be

  259. more joy in heaven over one sinner who

  260. repents than over 99 righteous persons

  261. who need no repentance. So Jesus is

  262. talking to them about sheep. And I think

  263. Jesus paused here. I don't think he went

  264. immediately into his next, right? I

  265. think Jesus paused and he's kind of

  266. looking around. He's reading the room.

  267. Have you ever tried to explain something

  268. to someone and they just didn't get it?

  269. And so you had to explain it a couple

  270. more times. Like we were talking to

  271. Harmony a couple of weeks ago. She's our

  272. nine-year-old. She's nine now.

  273. >> It's ridiculous.

  274. >> We were talking to her about force like

  275. like physics like force. And we've been

  276. introducing her to Star Wars. So any

  277. Star Wars fans out there? Hey. So we've

  278. been introducing Harmony. We went the

  279. right order. I almost messed it up, but

  280. Kate saved it. We went 456 instead of 1

  281. 2 3. And it blew her mind when she found

  282. out that spoilers, Darth Vader is Luke's

  283. father. So,

  284. so turn off the stream if you don't want

  285. spoilers on that. So, she goes, she

  286. goes, "Is it the force?" And I said,

  287. "No, it's not the force. It's a it's a

  288. force that moves things." I don't think

  289. she ever quite got it, but we tried to

  290. explain it a few times. And anyways,

  291. that's what Jesus is doing here. He's

  292. trying to explain these things to a

  293. 9-year-old who doesn't have they don't

  294. have concept of what's going on here.

  295. So,

  296. he's think he's looking around. He's

  297. trying to explain something and they

  298. just don't quite get it. And this is

  299. what Jesus is doing, trying to explain

  300. this to these people. He immediately

  301. then tells another story. So, basically,

  302. he's like, "Let me explain it another

  303. way. Let me give you another story that

  304. maybe you'll understand a little bit

  305. more." And he continues in verse 8. He

  306. says, 'Or what woman having 10 silver

  307. coins, if she loses one coin, does not

  308. light a lamp and sweep the house and

  309. seek diligently until she finds it? And

  310. when she has found it, she calls

  311. together her friends and neighbors,

  312. saying, "Rejoice with me, for I have

  313. found the coin that I had lost. Just so,

  314. I tell you, there is joy before the

  315. angels of God over one sinner who

  316. repents." So, I think here Jesus pauses

  317. again. He's told two stories. He's

  318. looking at people's faces, trying to see

  319. who got it. Who's who's where's the

  320. light bulb turning on for some of these

  321. people. And so he's looking, maybe some

  322. more of them understood, but it seemed

  323. like some were just not quite

  324. understanding it. And so in my mind's

  325. eye, as I'm kind of reading this passage

  326. as I'm preparing, I see Jesus kind of

  327. like doing one of these where he's

  328. trying to he's trying to figure out how

  329. can I explain this to you so that you'll

  330. understand what I'm talking about.

  331. shaking his head. Let me make this as

  332. simple as possible. And by simple, I

  333. mean, let me explain it. Let me draw it

  334. out a little bit and give you some more

  335. explanation about exactly what I'm

  336. talking about to be hopefully more

  337. relatable to his intended audience. And

  338. this is a story that many of us have

  339. heard, many of us may relate to in one

  340. way or another. And this uh we're going

  341. to end our introduction. We're going to

  342. get into kind of the meat of what we're

  343. going to talk about here. And it's

  344. called the prodigal. The story within

  345. the Bible, the title is the prodigal

  346. son. Now, those titles were not in the

  347. original scripture. We put those there.

  348. So, the title in your Bible, if you look

  349. at it, says the prodigal son, but we're

  350. going to we're just going to call it the

  351. prodigal. So, more than just about sheep

  352. or coins, this parable provides deeper

  353. explanation into the idea that Jesus is

  354. trying to share with his audience. So,

  355. we're going to unpack the story as Jesus

  356. tells it to us. And he starts in verse

  357. 11. And he says, "There was a man who

  358. had two sons and the younger of them

  359. said to his father, "Father, give me the

  360. share of property that is coming to me."

  361. And he divided his property between

  362. them. So we start off, we have a father,

  363. we have two sons. The younger son says

  364. that he wants his share. So he goes to

  365. his dad and says he wants his share.

  366. What does that mean? His share was not

  367. something that he should be receiving

  368. while his father was still alive.

  369. his share was the share of the

  370. inheritance that he would receive when

  371. his father dies.

  372. So basically, so I have two brothers, a

  373. younger one and an older one, but I'm

  374. going to be the older son in this

  375. scenario. And Tim, my younger brother,

  376. is going to be the younger son. So Tim

  377. walks up to dad and dad and and says,

  378. "Dad, could you either kick the bucket

  379. here or give me my inheritance right

  380. now?" He's impatient. He wants the

  381. reward that's coming to him that is

  382. coming to him. So, it's not like this

  383. isn't going to happen, but he wants it

  384. before he's supposed to have it. He

  385. wants it before the right time. So, he

  386. has this impatient child. And the first

  387. thing we learn about the younger, the

  388. prodigal son, is that he wanted his

  389. reward early.

  390. And Pastor Ben talked last week about

  391. those who are in the waiting. We're

  392. waiting for healing or we're waiting for

  393. a door to open or we're waiting for a

  394. vision or clarity of what God wants from

  395. us for a reward that was promised in the

  396. word or in our prayers as we're talking

  397. to him for any number of things. And

  398. like the younger son, we often find

  399. ourselves getting impatient

  400. and we ask for our reward now. I want it

  401. right now. Give it.

  402. But here's the thing in this story, like

  403. you're basically saying, "Dad, would you

  404. die already

  405. or give me what I want?" And demanding

  406. an early reward is rebellion.

  407. And this shows a rebellion to God's

  408. plans for us because God does have a

  409. plan for us. And God has the right

  410. timing for that plan to happen. So,

  411. we're rebelling on God's plans. But it

  412. also ultimately shows that we don't

  413. trust God or his timing.

  414. Now, the father in the story is never

  415. portrayed as a bad father or one who

  416. didn't love his sons. And it's not

  417. explicitly stated, but since the father

  418. in this story reflects God the father, I

  419. think that when the father did this and

  420. he divided up his his inheritance and he

  421. gave it to the younger son. I think the

  422. father had an idea of what was going to

  423. happen if he gave the younger son his

  424. reward before he was supposed to get it.

  425. Because a good father knows his

  426. children. My dad withheld many things

  427. from me when I was younger.

  428. Yes,

  429. I was pretty stupid when I was younger.

  430. And and at the time, like we're angry.

  431. We're like, "Dad, it's not going to hurt

  432. me. Let me have it. Like, I can handle

  433. it." But dads know, good dads know when

  434. we're ready to handle something, whether

  435. good or bad.

  436. And I think that this father also knew

  437. his son wouldn't learn the lesson that

  438. he needed to learn without doing what he

  439. asked.

  440. So I think that sometimes God gives us

  441. things that we ask for and lets things

  442. go wrong because we ask for it too soon

  443. because there's a lesson we needed to

  444. learn that we wouldn't have learned

  445. otherwise unless we recognized, oh man,

  446. I really messed up there. Like like when

  447. I got to be like 23 24 like right before

  448. I got married I looked back at all the

  449. things that dad withheld for me and I

  450. was like dog gone it he was right every

  451. time.

  452. >> That's right man.

  453. And that's what we find out that that

  454. fathers have a certain foresight

  455. that sons don't have and we wouldn't

  456. learn the lesson without doing

  457. what he asked. And so he divides the

  458. property. He gives the younger son his

  459. share. And the thing about rebellion is

  460. it starts in the heart. But rebellion

  461. never stays in the heart for long.

  462. Eventually rebellion changes our

  463. direction. And so we continue in Luke

    Luke 15:3

  464. 15:3. It says, "Not many days later, the

  465. younger son gathered all he had and took

  466. a journey into a far country. So the

  467. younger son gets his inheritance early

  468. before his father dies. And it's not

  469. long after that, not many days, he's

  470. gone. He gets what he wanted and he

  471. leaves. He's done living under his

  472. father's roof. And I'm sure he was

  473. looking forward to being done living

  474. under his father's rules.

  475. And so he distanced himself from his

  476. father.

  477. Once he had what he wanted, it was far

  478. easier for him to leave.

  479. Like as long as his reward was tied up

  480. with his father and he didn't have

  481. access to it, he has to stay in his

  482. father's house. He has to stay under his

  483. father's rules. But he also receives all

  484. the things that he receives from his

  485. father's house. But once he had what he

  486. wanted, he no longer needed to be under

  487. his father's influence. And he

  488. recognized that. He's like, "I'm out of

  489. here." His rebellion led directly to his

  490. separation.

  491. See, if God always gave us our reward in

  492. our timing instead of his, if we get

  493. what we're waiting for too early, we can

  494. quickly find ourselves moving from God

  495. reliance to self-reliance.

  496. Say, "I don't need you anymore. I have

  497. what I want. I'm going to do it myself."

  498. And self-reliance means we no longer

  499. need to live under God's roof and we no

  500. longer have to live under God's rules.

  501. And that sounds great and it sounds like

  502. freedom and a lot of people um say that

  503. it is. Uh but we find that living

  504. outside of God's house and outside of

  505. God's rules and his protection is not

  506. the freedom that we think it is. Relying

  507. on God is necessary when we're in the

  508. waiting. But if we get our reward, if we

  509. get our healing, if we get our vision or

  510. our clarity before we learn our lesson

  511. or mature to the point we're ready for

  512. it, we can more easily leave the shelter

  513. of God's presence in our lives.

  514. Sometimes it happens quite quickly, like

  515. the younger son, he he had all of his

  516. stuff and he was out of there. Sometimes

  517. it takes a little bit longer. Sometimes

  518. in the morning, your alarm goes off to

  519. to read your devotionals and read your

  520. Bible and you're like, "I'm going to

  521. sleep in today just just once."

  522. Or you're getting ready to go into your

  523. time of prayer, uh, but you're scrolling

  524. on your phone and you find an article

  525. that's super interesting and you're

  526. like, "Well, God already knows

  527. everything that I want and everything

  528. that I need. I don't need to pray." Or

  529. church becomes optional instead of being

  530. exciting.

  531. We decide we don't have to be in the

  532. house. We can uh stay home. We can do

  533. all these fun things.

  534. But ultimately from those things,

  535. sometimes quick, sometimes slow, we

  536. separate ourselves from him. And

  537. distance from the father always creates

  538. space for something else to take his

  539. place.

  540. And we see that happen here in Luke

    Luke 15:3

  541. 15:3. and we continue the story. So,

  542. he's moved to a far away place which in

  543. and of itself not a bad thing. But then

  544. something happens because he received

  545. his reward too early in his rebellion

  546. and he distanced himself from his

  547. father. There he squandered his property

  548. in reckless living. And when he had

  549. spent everything, a severe famine arose

  550. in that country and he began to be in

  551. need. So he went and hired himself out

  552. to one of the citizens of that country

  553. who sent him into his fields to feed the

  554. pigs. And he was longing to be fed with

  555. the pods that the pigs ate and no one

  556. gave him anything. So he rebelss,

  557. separates himself and we find that he

  558. wasted his wealth.

  559. So remember rebellion led to his

  560. separation. When we rebel, we can more

  561. easily separate from God. And that

  562. separation from God will ultimately and

  563. always lead to ruin.

  564. See, the younger son had reached the

  565. point in his life where he was mature

  566. enough to spend or save or invest, be

  567. good steward or take good care of the

  568. wealth that was given to him. And I

  569. think that the father knew when he gave

  570. him that wealth

  571. what would happen. Now, I'm sure the

  572. father hoped that

  573. he would spend it well, that he would be

  574. wise with it. But I think he knew that

  575. the most likely scenario was going to be

  576. him wasting it. But here's something I

  577. learned, and I love learning new things,

  578. especially as I'm studying that I can

  579. share with you all to teach you guys new

  580. things. Something that I learned while

  581. preparing this message. We talk about

  582. this story, the prodigal son. What does

  583. prodigal even mean? I think for a lot it

  584. means uh weward. So we talk about this

  585. weward son that left or the lost son

  586. that he went away. He was lost. Like it

  587. goes with the other two stories that

  588. he's lost. But prodigal doesn't mean

  589. either one of those things. Prodigal

  590. doesn't have any sort of connotation to

  591. being weward or lost. Prodigal means

  592. recklessly extravagant, wastefully

  593. lavish or spending with reckless

  594. abandon.

  595. In other words, the son is called

  596. prodigal not because he was lost or

  597. because he was weward. He was prodigal

  598. with his inheritance. He squandered it.

  599. He recklessly spent it. He took his

  600. reward and he wasted everything that was

  601. given to him. and without his father's

  602. wisdom and his father's rules to guide

  603. him, he didn't know how to use his

  604. wealth and it landed him in a pigsty.

  605. So to understand this further, again

  606. talking about context in the word of of

  607. of who Jesus is talking to here, we have

  608. to go back to Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

  609. So, the books of the law in the Old

  610. Testament and all the people that Jesus

  611. is talking to are are Hebrews and Jews

  612. and they know Leviticus and Deuteronomy

  613. because they all learn the Torah, the

  614. first five books of the Bible. So, they

  615. know the Torah and the Jews had strict

  616. dietary laws. Now, pigs, uh, they were

  617. strictly forbidden to eat pigs. So, no

  618. bacon for them, no ham. I know it's sad.

  619. Their Easter didn't have ham.

  620. Even though Easter didn't happen yet,

  621. maybe that's what it was. That's what

  622. made it okay to eat ham. Okay, sorry,

  623. that was not in my outline.

  624. So pigs, they couldn't eat them. They

  625. weren't allowed to eat them.

  626. And they also couldn't touch their

  627. carcasses. So if you go back and you

  628. look at Leviticus and Deuteron, that's

  629. the law. That's the scriptural law.

  630. Don't eat a pig. Don't touch a dead pig.

  631. That was the rule. Now,

  632. this is thousands of years after

  633. Leviticus and Deuteronomy were written.

  634. So, we're here with Jesus talking to the

  635. Jews. And over those years, the Jewish

  636. leaders, so the Pharisees and the

  637. scribes, the religious leaders that were

  638. with them

  639. uh would place further restrictions on

  640. the law. And and originally, I think the

  641. intention was good because they didn't

  642. want people to break the law and become

  643. unclean and have to sacrifice and all

  644. that stuff. They wanted to help people

  645. not break the law. So let's say uh that

  646. we have a chair sitting here and we look

  647. in Leviticus and in Leviticus it says

  648. thou shalt not sit in this chair. Okay,

  649. that's the scripture. That's what God

  650. has told us. Don't sit in the chair. So

  651. what happens over these rabbis and these

  652. Pharisees and these religious leaders

  653. say we're going to help people not sit

  654. in that chair. So, we're gonna add a

  655. little bit to the law. We're gonna say,

  656. uh, you can't touch the chair. So, so

  657. they've elevated this idea of not

  658. touching the chair to scripture. And

  659. Jesus is is calling this out here as

  660. well, more subtly. Well, after a few

  661. more years, they're like, people are

  662. getting awful close to that chair, even

  663. though they're not touching it. So,

  664. we're going to make another law, and

  665. we're going to say you can't be within

  666. 3T of the chair. So, so not only the

  667. scripture by itself said don't sit in

  668. it, but then these rebbitical laws would

  669. say don't touch it and then they would

  670. continue to expand and say don't get

  671. within 3T of it and then a few years

  672. later they're like let's just build a

  673. wall around it and then they can't touch

  674. it or be within 3T or sit in it. So they

  675. would do all these things and they would

  676. elevate them to the level of scripture.

  677. And so at this point this is what

  678. they've done with pigs. So, the

  679. scripture only said, "Don't eat it.

  680. Don't touch the carcasses. Don't touch

  681. dead pigs." Well, now you can't be in

  682. the presence of pigs. You can't touch

  683. live pigs. You certainly can't be in the

  684. sky with them feeding them. And so, this

  685. guy to the Jews around him had reached

  686. the lowest point that he could reach.

  687. There was no lower than he could get

  688. than being in the sky feeding pigs. In

  689. fact, he was wishing that he could eat

  690. the slot that he's giving to them. So

  691. this is where this guy's at. He had this

  692. great wealth. He wastes it. And here he

  693. is in a pigsty.

  694. See, when we rebel and we separate

  695. ourselves from God, we may prosper in an

  696. earthly way. We see it all the time. We

  697. see people that prosper with their

  698. wealth

  699. in spite of their distance from God, but

  700. ultimately this will lead us to ruin.

  701. And maybe not financially,

  702. but oftentimes it'll be a physical

  703. ailment. Sometimes it'll be emotionally,

  704. but ultimately the ruin comes

  705. spiritually. Even if your wealth lasts

  706. your whole life on earth, ruin's going

  707. to come at the end. You want to avoid

  708. the ruin at the end. The ruin

  709. spiritually.

  710. And Jesus is is talking again in the

  711. book of Mark verse 8 or sorry, chapter

  712. 8:34. He says, "And calling the crowd to

  713. him with his disciples, he said to them,

  714. if anyone would come after me, let him

  715. deny himself and take up his cross and

  716. follow me. For whoever would save his

  717. life will lose it, but whoever loses his

  718. life for my sake in the gospels will

  719. save it. For what does it profit a man

  720. to gain the whole world and forfeit his

  721. soul?" So we can find ourselves at our

  722. lowest place deep in the valley

  723. even having gained the whole world but

  724. have lost our souls.

  725. And when we reach kind of rock bottom

  726. when we come to the place where we're in

  727. the pigsty we'll do one of two things.

  728. One, we blame God for where we put

  729. ourselves.

  730. See, the the younger son could have

  731. said, "Dad, you gave me this stuff. You

  732. enabled me to make these choices to end

  733. up in the pigsty."

  734. He could have blamed his father for his

  735. situation, for giving into his demands

  736. that he was in the situation he was in

  737. because the father put him there. Or we

  738. can do what the prodigal son ultimately

  739. does. He realized that sometimes God

  740. doesn't speak the loudest on the

  741. mountaintop.

  742. Sometimes he waits until the pigsty

  743. becomes quiet enough for us to finally

  744. hear him.

  745. And so he doesn't blame his dad. He

  746. doesn't blame anybody. He recognizes I'm

  747. the problem.

  748. I put myself here. And in verse 17 of

  749. Luke 15, the story continues. It says,

  750. "But when he came to himself, he said,

  751. "How many of my father's hired servants

  752. have more than enough bread, but I

  753. perish here with hunger."

  754. So he came to himself. He he realized

  755. something. His rebellion had led to his

  756. separation.

  757. And his separation has now led to his

  758. ruin.

  759. And now his ruin led him to a

  760. realization

  761. that even the lowest in his father's

  762. house

  763. have more than enough.

  764. In the moments that we're at our lowest,

  765. having separated ourselves from God

  766. through our rebellion and finding

  767. ourselves in ruin, we have to start the

  768. process of repentance. And the process

  769. of repentance starts with the

  770. realization that we put ourselves where

  771. we are.

  772. Our choices led to the ruin.

  773. God didn't do that to us.

  774. And that we can find all that we need.

  775. We just got to go back to the father's

  776. house. Even the lowest servant in the

  777. father's house has more than enough. Has

  778. more than they need. our father's

  779. provision and promises for us that we

  780. can find all we need in Christ.

  781. And Paul talks about this in the book of

  782. Philippians chapter 4. He says in verse

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  783. 11,

  784. "Not that I am speaking of being in

  785. need, for I have learned in whatever

  786. situation I am to be content. I know how

  787. to be brought low, and I know how to

  788. abound in any and every circumstance. I

  789. have learned the secret of facing plenty

  790. and hunger, abundance and need. I can do

  791. all things through him who strengthens

  792. me. And my God will supply every need of

  793. yours according to his riches in glory

  794. in Christ Jesus. So what do we do after

  795. we have this this realization?

  796. When we finally stop blaming God and we

  797. start realizing our responsibility for

  798. the situation that we find ourselves in,

  799. what do we do? Because realization is

  800. all well and good when we realize we've

  801. done something wrong. But realization

  802. alone never changed anybody.

  803. We can realize that there's something

  804. wrong, but until we take action, change

  805. will not come.

  806. And so the prodigal got up

  807. and in verse 18 it says,"I

  808. will arise and go to my father and I

  809. will say to him, father, I have sinned

  810. against heaven and before you. I am no

  811. longer worthy to be called your son.

  812. Treat me as one of your hired servants."

  813. And he arose and came to his father. So

  814. he makes this realization

  815. and he returned to his father.

  816. He's a changed man because of what he

  817. went through. A lesson that he couldn't

  818. have been taught any other way.

  819. His ruin taught him something. He didn't

  820. need lavish living. He didn't need

  821. self-indulgence or self-reliance. He

  822. needed his dad.

  823. And sometimes we just need our dad.

  824. and he was ready to surrender everything

  825. to be allowed back into his father's

  826. house. His rebellion had led to his

  827. separation

  828. and his separation had led to his ruin

  829. and his ruin led to this realization.

  830. But his realization had to lead to

  831. something and his realization led to

  832. surrender.

  833. And he surrendered not only his stuff

  834. like he didn't have any stuff. He was

  835. living in a pigsty. He has no stuff to

  836. surrender. He was actually ready, if we

  837. read, he was ready to surrender his

  838. sunship. He was ready to give up

  839. everything that he had and more. He was

  840. ready to say, "I'm not worthy to be your

  841. son. No longer worthy." He understood

  842. surrender. And this idea of surrender,

  843. um, my wife and I have learned quite a

  844. bit about this idea of surrender over

  845. the last couple years now. So, some of

  846. you know, a lot of you don't. I do have

  847. permission to tell the story. So, my

  848. wife has been going through some

  849. physical issues. So, she has bouts of

  850. dizziness and bouts of um vertigo where

  851. she'll feel like she's on a on a ship

  852. like swaying back and forth when she's

  853. standing still. It comes and goes and

  854. sometimes it's really severe and

  855. sometimes it's not. And sometimes it

  856. lasts for a long time and there's other

  857. times where she doesn't have it, but it

  858. always continues to come back. And so

  859. it's led to a lot of frustration. It's

  860. led to a lot of um anger really at God

  861. because we keep praying for healing um

  862. and and nothing seems to come. And so a

  863. few weeks ago um she was at the Radiant

  864. Women's Conference and um she's on the

  865. way, she's driving up uh to this

  866. conference and she's praying. She's

  867. like, "God, is this is this like the

  868. moment?" like I'm going I'm stepping out

  869. going to this conference like is this

  870. the moment that I can be free of this

  871. that I can be free of this ailment and

  872. so she's she's weeping in the car on the

  873. way to the she's not even at the

  874. conference yet she's having these

  875. moments with God she's weeping she's

  876. crying out to God to free her of this

  877. physical ailment we still can't figure

  878. out what it is and she goes there and

  879. they have this session and it seems like

  880. this this lady's talking to my wife and

  881. so she's feeling these the the feelings

  882. of of God's like working in her and then

  883. there's an opportunity for them they

  884. they go up to this basket and there's

  885. like a bunch of bookmarks in it and my

  886. wife's like meek and shy and so like

  887. she's like going to get bookmarks and

  888. like the other ladies are like are like

  889. check they're not checking her out of

  890. the way they're they're like she's like

  891. letting everybody else go first because

  892. that's who she is she's like I'll just

  893. wait. And then like she finds like the

  894. little bookmark that could it was like

  895. the one at the bottom of the basket. And

  896. she finally gets up there and she she

  897. pulls out this this one bookmark from

  898. the bottom after all of this that she's

  899. gone through. And they all said

  900. something on them. They they had like

  901. encouraging words or phrases or

  902. something. And she pulls this out and

  903. her bookmark I'm mad I didn't bring it

  904. because it's at home. her bookmark said

  905. healed

  906. and

  907. and she just like breaks down and so

  908. like all the women are coming around her

  909. and praying for her. So she has this

  910. moment she pulls this bookmark out and

  911. it says healed. And here's the thing

  912. that didn't heal her physical ailment,

  913. you guys. Like she still has it. Like

  914. we're still going like trying to figure

  915. out what this thing is. Okay? God didn't

  916. heal her body in that moment, but he did

  917. heal something else. He healed her

  918. mindset towards it. Like like he removed

  919. the I like she's like take this ailment

  920. away. Take this ailment away. He took it

  921. away from her holding on to it and

  922. letting it affect her walk with him.

  923. Like it healed her mindset.

  924. And so we were talking later about her

  925. whole experience and I'm crying because

  926. I'm an empathetic crier because whenever

  927. she cries I cry. So, so we're weeping

  928. together and she she pulls out the

  929. bookmark and I'm like and tears

  930. tears are falling and and the girls are

  931. asleep. We're trying not to wake them

  932. up. And we got to talking about

  933. surrender and what surrender really is.

  934. And I think that especially as

  935. Christians, we have a wrong idea of what

  936. surrender actually is. We will surrender

  937. our poverty or our financial situation

  938. and we expect prosperity to come back to

  939. us. And this is the trap that the

  940. younger son fell into. He's like, "Give

  941. me this prosperity. Give me it. Give me

  942. give me it. We'll surrender our problems

  943. and expect a problem free life in

  944. return." It's like, "God, once I give

  945. this to you, don't give me any more

  946. problems. Here's this one."

  947. Or we surrender our condition expecting

  948. a cure.

  949. But that's not what surrender is.

  950. Surrender, the definition is to yield to

  951. the possession of or power of another to

  952. give up, abandon, or relinquish.

  953. Surrender has zero connotation of

  954. receiving anything in return.

  955. She surrendered her sickness. She

  956. surrendered her ailment. Did God

  957. immediately heal it? No. Like I said,

  958. we're still seeing doctors. We're still

  959. paying for doctors and we still don't

  960. know what it is. In fact, she goes to

  961. this neurologist. That was useless. She

  962. goes to this neurologist and he

  963. diagnoses her with situational

  964. uh ver positional vertigo and she's

  965. like, "Okay, great. We got a diagnosis.

  966. What do we do?" Literally, I'm not

  967. kidding you guys. The neurologist said,

  968. "Google it."

  969. >> Oh my god.

  970. >> We paid like $1,500 for this neurologist

  971. to tell us to Google it. So, a little

  972. frustrating still. However, we've placed

  973. the ailment in God's hands, not

  974. expecting anything. Like, if he never

  975. heals her physically, like we know that

  976. God's put her in the place that she's at

  977. for this time and that ultimately she's

  978. going to be healed.

  979. >> You know, at some point or another,

  980. she's going to be healed.

  981. She did receive one thing. She

  982. surrendered her sickness. And this

  983. counts for anything we surrender. Once

  984. we truly surrender something and give it

  985. up, we take the weight off of ourselves

  986. and put it on God. We receive peace.

  987. >> Her mindset about this ailment, though

  988. we get frustrated sometimes, ultimately

  989. is always peace. Her mindset is

  990. different now. She knows she's in the

  991. waiting. She knows she's in the hands of

  992. the father. She dwells with the father

  993. in his house, waiting for his timing and

  994. the reward at the right time.

  995. So, our realization has to lead to true

  996. surrender. When we're giving something

  997. up, like leaving our hands empty, like

  998. like we don't want anything back, God,

  999. you take it.

1000. And true surrender becomes repentance,

1001. trusting God with what we relinquish to

1002. him. So, the prodigal son returns to his

1003. father ready to surrender all to be in

1004. his house once again. And here's the

1005. beautiful part of the story and more

1006. deeply the gospel. The son takes one

1007. step home and the father starts running.

1008. Chapter uh 15 20. But while he was still

1009. a long way off, so the prodigal son,

1010. he's still way far away. His father saw

1011. him. His father's watching for him. His

1012. father was watching for him to come back

1013. and felt compassion and ran and embraced

1014. him and kissed him. And the son said to

1015. him, "Father, I have sinned against

1016. heaven and before you. I am no longer

1017. worthy to be called your son." But the

1018. father said to his servants, "Bring

1019. quickly the best robe and put it on him

1020. and put a ring on his hand and shoes on

1021. his feet. And bring the fattened calf

1022. and kill it, and let us eat and

1023. celebrate, for my son was dead and is

1024. alive again." He was lost and is found.

1025. And they began to celebrate. His father

  1026. restored him.

1027. So, here comes his son. He's like, he's

1028. looking for him. Sees him off in the

1029. distance. He's dirty. He probably reeks.

  1030. He's broke. He's probably wearing rags.

1031. Probably not wearing any shoes.

1032. And we look back at the passage and we

1033. see again who's doing the running.

  1034. Prodigal son's not running. He's he's

  1035. he's broken. He's walking. He's doing

1036. the best that he can to get back to his

  1037. father's house.

1038. But the father sees him.

1039. No hesitation. He sees his heart and he

  1040. runs to him.

1041. The father loved his son long before he

1042. returned. He loved his son before he

1043. repented. He loved his son before his

1044. ruin. He loved his son before the

1045. separation. He loved his son before the

  1046. rebellion. He never stopped.

1047. He was watching for him to come home

  1048. before he repented.

1049. And he embraced him before he

  1050. apologized.

1051. The father knew his heart. The father

1052. knew as he was walking up that he was a

1053. broken man and that he was ready to

1054. surrender. He saw his heart in his

  1055. brokenness.

1056. And God does that for us. We can say

1057. what we want. We can say we repent. But

1058. if we're not walking in brokenness,

1059. God doesn't recognize that. God

  1060. recognizes our hearts

  1061. of

1062. of repentance, of wanting to be back

1063. with him, of truly wanting to be in his

  1064. house,

1065. our realization of our failure, our

1066. heart of surrender, of all to him. And

1067. as he walks, as we walk to him, he runs

  1068. to us.

1069. And not only that, not only did he run

1070. to him and he embraces him, he gives him

1071. the best robe. He gives him the best

1072. shoes. They have a party to celebrate

  1073. his return.

1074. Now, did the prodigal son, the one that

1075. left, did he deserve all of this?

1076. No, he didn't deserve it. This guy

1077. basically said, "Dad, I wish you were

1078. dead so I could have my inheritance." He

1079. rebelled. He separated himself from his

1080. father. He disrespected his father's

1081. house and his rules, ultimately

1082. disrespecting the father. But the father

1083. turns around and gives him that which he

  1084. doesn't deserve.

1085. And do we know what that is?

  1086. That is grace.

  1087. Rebellion, separation, ruin,

1088. realization, he surrenders. And now

1089. finally his surrender positioned him to

1090. receive the grace that has always been

1091. available. He didn't have to get back to

1092. the house. The father went to him and

  1093. gave him grace

1094. and he didn't have to wait until he was

1095. ruined. The grace was always available.

1096. You can always surrender. No matter if

1097. you're in the pigsty or if you're in the

1098. separation or if you're in the

1099. beginnings of rebellion to realize, man,

1100. I can surrender this and I'll receive

  1101. grace.

1102. His surrender positioned him to receive

1103. the grace that has always been

1104. available. And Paul talks about this in

1105. Ephesians chapter 2. He says, ' And you

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

1106. were dead in the trespasses and sins in

1107. which you once walked, following the

1108. course of this world, following the

1109. prince of the power of the air, the

1110. spirit that is now at work in the sons

1111. of disobedience. So here's the prodigal

1112. son. He's walking in disobedience.

1113. We're at the lowest, dead in our

  1114. trespasses.

1115. In the sins in which you once walked, we

1116. rebelled and separated ourselves and

  1117. found ourselves in ruin.

  1118. But Paul continues,

  1119. he says, "But God,

1120. but God being rich in mercy because of

1121. the great love with which he loved us,

1122. even when we were dead in our

1123. trespasses, even when we're in the

  1124. pigsty,

1125. God loves us. Made us alive together

1126. with Christ. For by grace you have been

1127. saved through faith. And this is not

1128. your own doing. It is the gift of God,

1129. not a result of works that no one may

1130. boast. So this prodigal son can't give

1131. himself grace. He can't run into the

1132. house and put the best robe on and put

1133. the shoes on. Only the father can give

1134. that to him. Not by our works. Only God

  1135. can provide grace.

1136. And if prodigal means lavishly

1137. extravagant, then perhaps there are

1138. actually two prodigals in this story.

1139. Maybe the prodigal son isn't fully

  1140. accurate

1141. because the son was prodigal. Yes, in

1142. his rebellion and in his wasting of the

1143. reward that his father gave him. But if

1144. we look at what the father did,

1145. the father was prodigal. He was lavishly

1146. extravagant with his grace. He gave the

1147. son that which he didn't deserve because

1148. he loved him and he came back to him. A

1149. gift he didn't deserve. And so will God

1150. lavish his love and grace upon us when

1151. we return to him, our prodigal father.

1152. And if Jesus had stopped there, every

1153. sinner in the crowd would have been

1154. cheering. They're like, "Yeah, grace,

1155. grace for everybody. We're lost and now

1156. we're found." But Jesus in this story,

1157. he goes on. That's not the end of the

1158. story because there was another son in

1159. the story. As we continue on, verse 25,

1160. now the father's older son was in the

1161. field. And as he came and drew near to

1162. the house, he heard music and dancing.

1163. And he called one of the servants and

1164. asked what these things meant. And he

1165. said to him, "Your brother has come, and

1166. your father has killed the fattened calf

1167. because he has received him back safe

1168. and sound." But the older son was angry

1169. and refused to go in. His father came

1170. out and entreated him. But he answered

  1171. his father,"Look, these many years I

1172. have served you, and I never disobeyed

1173. your command. Yet you never gave me a

1174. young goat that I might celebrate with

1175. my friends." That's a lot of first

  1176. person. I, me, my.

1177. But when this son of yours came who has

1178. devoured your property with prostitutes,

1179. you killed the fattened calf for him.

1180. And he said to him, "Son, you are always

1181. with me and all that is mine is yours.

1182. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad

1183. for this. Your brother was dead and is

1184. alive. He was lost and is found." And so

1185. all the the other two stories, the the

1186. sheep, the sheep and the coin end with

  1187. restoration and celebration.

1188. But Jesus includes something different

1189. in this story. He includes the older

  1190. brother's reaction to grace.

1191. And when we look through Jesus told

1192. three stories and Jesus also had three

1193. audiences. He was talking to sinners and

1194. he was talking to tax collectors and he

1195. was talking to religious leaders and

1196. each story pertains to one of those

1197. groups. So when we look at the story of

1198. the lost sheep, we're looking at the

1199. sinners, the prostitutes, the people

1200. that hung around Jesus because they were

1201. looked down upon by the religious

1202. leaders, giving them the message that

1203. God will leave 99 good sheep to come and

1204. find you. He'll leave all of those to

1205. come and find you and then he'll bring

1206. you back and he'll celebrate. And so God

  1207. goes and gets them.

1208. And that talks to the sinners. Now, the

1209. tax collectors, Jesus talks about money,

1210. talks about a lost coin, and talks about

1211. how if a woman loses a coin out of 10,

1212. she moves everything out of the way. God

1213. will clear the way to come and find you

1214. and bring you back and celebrate. And

1215. so, he's talking to the tax collectors

1216. now, the prodigal son. And here's here's

1217. where the whole teaser has led to if

1218. you've stayed with me this far. Here's

1219. this blew my mind. referenced way back

1220. at the beginning. The intended audience

1221. for the prodigal son is not the people

1222. that think they're the younger son. Like

1223. he's telling that part of the story to

1224. lead to this point. The intended

1225. audience for this story were the

1226. religious leaders. How are you going to

1227. react when other people that don't

  1228. deserve it get grace?

1229. He started the story the same way and it

1230. came to restoration. But then he pointed

1231. out that the story wasn't only about the

1232. younger son but also the older son's

1233. reaction to the extravagant grace given

1234. to the sinner. The audience for this

1235. story were the ones who have served him

1236. for many years. The ones who have never

1237. disobeyed a command even when they made

  1238. up the commands themselves.

1239. The one who led worship for 24 years.

1240. The one who stood at the door and

1241. greeted for five years. The one who's

1242. been an elder in the church for 40

1243. years. The one who's been a Sunday

1244. school teacher. The one who came to

1245. Christ as a child and never fell away

1246. and stayed in his house, never

1247. disobeyed, a faithful Christian since

1248. childhood. And as I sat in that

  1249. conference, I realized that Jesus wasn't

1250. just talking to people who had wandered

1251. away. He was talking to people like me,

1252. people that have been in the church.

1253. So, a lot of us always think that the

1254. prodigal son was primarily about one

1255. lost son. And what I learned in that

1256. moment is that Jesus wasn't primarily

1257. talking to the younger brothers in the

1258. crowd at all. He already talked to them.

1259. He was talking to the religious leaders.

1260. He was talking to the people that never

  1261. left the father's house.

1262. He drops this bomb on them. He says that

1263. the older son remained with the father,

1264. but the older son and we

1265. are in no less need of grace than the

  1266. younger son was.

1267. Like if we look back at the beginning of

1268. the story, the younger son asked for his

1269. inheritance, but it doesn't say the

1270. father only gave it to the younger son.

1271. It says the father divided the

1272. inheritance, gave the younger son his

1273. share, gave the older son his share.

1274. He divided his wealth. Now, did the

1275. older son deserve to receive his share

1276. early? No, he sure didn't. So, in that

1277. moment and until now, he was living

1278. under grace and he didn't realize it.

1279. It's hard to recognize our need for

1280. grace when we've never abandoned it.

1281. In another exchange with a Pharisee

1282. earlier on in Luke chapter 7, Jesus goes

    Luke 7 chapter mention

1283. to Simon the Pharisees house. So he goes

1284. to this Pharisees house and while he's

1285. at Simon the Pharisees house, he's

1286. talking with him. Um, a woman labeled as

1287. a sinner in the text, but most scholars

1288. believe this was probably a prostitute.

1289. Came into Simon the Pharisees house

1290. while Jesus was there. came into the

1291. house with an alabaster flask of

  1292. perfume, expensive perfume, likely

1293. perfume that she used in her profession

1294. to draw men to her. So, she takes this

1295. flask of perfume, she breaks it, and she

1296. pours it on Jesus's feet and she washes

1297. Jesus's feet with this expensive oil

1298. with her tears as she's weeping and with

  1299. her hair. She's washing Jesus's feet.

1300. Now, Simon is a Pharisee. This is a

1301. prostitute that has just walked into his

1302. house. So, Simon, Simon's like, "Uh,

1303. gross." Like, Jesus, what are you doing

1304. here? Like, this prostitute came in and

  1305. she's like, "You're letting her wash

1306. your feet." And Jesus like calls him out

  1307. in Luke 7:41.

    Luke 7:41

1308. And he calls him out by again telling a

1309. story. Tells a parable. A certain money

1310. lender had two debtors. One owed 500

1311. daer and the other 50. When they could

1312. not pay, he canceled the debt of both.

1313. Now, which of them will love him more?

1314. And I think Simon realizes like Jesus

1315. got him here. And Simon goes, Simon

1316. answered the one, I suppose, for whom he

1317. canceled the larger debt. And then Jesus

1318. says, "You have judged rightly." So

1319. Jesus calls out Simon. The woman washed

1320. and anointed Jesus's feet. While Simon

1321. the Pharisee did not have a basin at his

1322. door, which was important for religious,

1323. you know, for the Jewish faith, you

1324. needed to wash your feet before you came

  1325. into someone's house. And Simon didn't

1326. even have a basin there for Jesus to

  1327. wash his feet.

1328. And he says, "This sinner came in and

1329. did what you weren't willing to do."

1330. And Jesus says something here that

1331. changed my perspective on grace.

1332. He says in verse 47, he says, 'There I

1333. tell you, her sins which are many, so

  1334. Jesus recognizes, yeah, she's a sinner,

1335. but her sins which are many are

1336. forgiven, for she loved much. But he who

1337. is forgiven little loves little.

1338. And the idea that I came home with from

1339. that con that conference and I hope that

  1340. I carry forward

1341. through the rest of my walk with God in

1342. this life is that grace doesn't seem

1343. that good when we don't think we're that

  1344. bad.

1345. Like grace isn't that amazing if we

  1346. think we're amazing.

1347. We love to hear the story of the

1348. prodigal son. We love to hear that part,

1349. the part of redemption and being

1350. restored and that God's going to come

1351. and get us and we're going to celebrate

  1352. together.

1353. The story of the prodigal son, the

1354. sinner, the prostitute, the porn star,

1355. the drug or the alcohol addict. They

1356. rebel, they separate, they live in ruin,

1357. and they come back. We love to hear that

1358. story. We love to hear those

  1359. testimonies.

1360. Those are the ones that that get our

  1361. emotions going.

1362. But we forget there's another part of

1363. the story. Jesus is talking to us.

1364. The ones who remained faithful for

  1365. years.

1366. Maybe even the ones who returned and

1367. have been staying in the house for a

  1368. long time,

  1369. not recognizing

1370. that we were already living there only

1371. under the grace of the father,

1372. not anything that we've done.

1373. Grace isn't amazing until we realize our

1374. desperate need for it, whether returning

1375. as the younger son or living there as

1376. the older son. And I'll close with this

1377. scripture in Ephesians chapter 2. We

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

1378. read some of it before, but we're going

1379. to read a little bit more of it. Verse

1380. four, Paul writes, "But God being rich

1381. in mercy, because of the great love with

1382. which he loved us, even when we were

1383. dead in our trespasses, made us alive

  1384. together with Christ.

1385. By grace, you have been saved. There's

1386. no other way. It's only a gift that be

1387. can be given to those who don't deserve

  1388. it, and we don't."

1389. and raised us up with him, seated us

1390. with him in the heavenly places in

1391. Christ Jesus, so that in the coming

1392. ages, he might show the immeasurable

1393. riches of his grace and kindness toward

1394. us in Christ Jesus. Let's stand together

1395. today. I'm going to invite the worship

  1396. team back up.

1397. And as we we close out service in in

1398. worship, I want to invite the prayer

  1399. team to come

  1400. and prepare themselves.

1401. Some of us uh were the younger brother.

1402. Maybe we're not in the pigsty yet. Maybe

1403. you are. Maybe you are in ruin.

1404. But maybe you've just rebelled. Maybe

1405. you've just began to separate yourself

  1406. from the father's house.

1407. Some of us are the younger brother

1408. today. And we know that we've wandered

1409. and we know that we've run or we're on

1410. the run. We know that we've wasted what

  1411. God has given us.

1412. The father today is sitting on the porch

1413. waiting to see you on the horizon so

1414. that he can run to you today. And if

1415. that's you, as we continue to worship,

1416. come and receive. Come and receive

1417. prayer. Step out. Come and worship at

  1418. the altar.

1419. But some of us, I'd say most of us are

1420. the older brother. We've been in church

1421. for decades. We've been Christians for

1422. most of our lives. We've served

  1423. faithfully.

1424. But somewhere along the way, we've

1425. forgotten that we're standing in this

1426. house by exactly the same grace that

1427. calls back the younger prodigal son.

1428. And so, receive today the grace that God

1429. has for you. Whether you've wandered far

1430. away or never left the porch, the

1431. invitation is the same. Come to the

1432. father. Come to Christ today. Let him

1433. restore you and let him remind you of

1434. grace and his love. And so do that as we

1435. worship today. We're going to pray.

1436. Lord, we are grateful for your grace.

1437. We're grateful for your power, your

1438. mercy, your love. Lord, your love that

1439. never stops. Your love that never gives

1440. up on us. no matter where we're at or

1441. what we've done. God, your grace is

  1442. available

1443. to those who've been lost. But God, we

1444. also pray conviction on those of us that

1445. have stayed in the house and we've

1446. forgotten the importance of your grace.

1447. Lord, break us today and mold us into

  1448. something new.

1449. Move in us today and prepare us for all

1450. that you have for us.

1451. move in this house today as we worship

  1452. in Jesus name. Amen.
