  1. Hey, welcome to Grace Summit Church

  2. podcast. We're so glad you're here.

  3. Heat. Heat. N.

  4. We're all about helping people know

  5. Jesus, grow in their faith, and live out

  6. his love every day. No matter where

  7. you're at in your faith journey, our

  8. prayer is that this message helps you

  9. know Jesus more and live with greater

  10. purpose and conviction. Let's jump in.

  11. >> Hallelujah.

  12. Hallelujah.

  13. Man, you guys awake today?

  14. >> Three of you are. Praise the Lord. Hey,

  15. it's good to be back in the house of

  16. God.

  17. >> Amen. my uh family and I, we had family

  18. vacation last week and and uh we were up

  19. in way up in northern Michigan and then

  20. in and uh Rockford, Michigan. We went to

  21. church at a uh new church for us, kind

  22. of some friends of ours and uh really

  23. fun as a pastor to just go and sit and

  24. enjoy it and not have to do anything. Um

  25. so that was fun. So, but good to be back

  26. home. If you're a first- time guest with

  27. us, my name is Ben. I have the

  28. opportunity to serve as lead pastor

  29. here. And we're going to get into the

  30. word of God. Before we do, I want to

  31. share something. I was watching this uh

  32. reel on Instagram

  33. uh actually earlier today and uh it's

  34. interesting because uh he's being

  35. incredibly critical of raising money for

  36. a church building and uh he's just kind

  37. of like un unloading in this in this

  38. church reel, this Instagram reel, and

  39. he's saying, "Man, people are raising

  40. $3.1 million for a brick and mortar and

  41. how is that way? we we could use that

  42. money for the poor and all this stuff's

  43. going on ran and he compares it to it to

  44. being Judas, right? So, I'm slightly

  45. taking offense as as I'm listening to

  46. this and I go to the very first comment.

  47. There's a kind of become more popular

  48. pastor. His name is Josh Howton. If you

  49. don't follow him, uh follow him because

  50. he's amazing. But I want to read his

  51. post to you and I'm bringing this up

  52. just because we've been kind of in this

  53. campaign season for a while. He says

  54. this. He says, "A church building is

  55. probably the single greatest long-term

  56. investment in the kingdom of God a

  57. generation of church members can make.

  58. It establishes a long-term beach head

  59. for the advance of the gospel in a

  60. region unlike anything else. And the

  61. people who sacrifice to do it are doing

  62. something that will be a huge part of

  63. reaching their own children and

  64. grandchildren." Isn't that amazing?

  65. That's powerful stuff. I got to hand

  66. this off otherwise I'll get distracted

  67. with notifications.

  68. >> But man, I just want to say thank you. I

  69. know a majority of people in this church

  70. have made an investment uh in the

  71. expansion of the kingdom of God, what

  72. God's doing here, and we're excited just

  73. to keep that moving forward. If you

  74. haven't uh participated in that, pray

  75. about it. See what God would have you to

  76. do. This is my belief that the

  77. investment we make now, when we get to

  78. heaven, we're going to see souls for

  79. generations that were impacted that made

  80. it into heaven because we were able to

  81. build something for the kingdom of God

  82. here. Amen.

  83. All right, I'm going to preach. Is that

  84. okay?

  85. >> Praise the Lord. Uh

  86. >> my thing, stick with me. Okay.

  87. Hallelujah. Hey, if you're online with

  88. us, let's everyone give the online a

  89. shout out. Say, "Amen."

  90. >> Amen.

  91. >> We're glad you're here. Um, I want to

  92. pray. Father, we thank you, Lord, for

  93. revival stirring on the inside of us.

  94. Uh, Father, I'm thankful today that,

  95. Lord, that you provide

  96. mana from heaven. Lord, we don't live by

  97. bread alone, but every word that

  98. proceeds from your mouth. And so Lord, I

  99. thank you for providing your word to

  100. your people on this day. So Lord, I

  101. thank you for the anointing that breaks

  102. the yoke of bondage upon this word that

  103. you're releasing to us. We receive it

  104. now in Jesus name. Amen.

  105. >> Matthew 5 and verse 9, uh Jesus says

  106. this. He says, "Blessed are the

  107. peacemakers,

  108. for they shall be called sons of God."

  109. This is the foundation of our

  110. conversation uh this morning is being

  111. peacemakers. I want to talk about peace.

  112. But before I do, I want to talk about uh

  113. the placebo effect. You guys familiar

  114. with this in the medical world? It's

  115. always uh kind of uh it's interesting to

  116. me that they can do these studies and

  117. put people in a room and and uh they'll

  118. give individual I think it's like a

  119. sugar pill. There's nothing in it,

  120. right? Other than sugar. Uh and they'll

  121. give them this pill and then they'll

  122. give a different group the actual new

  123. painkiller, right? And people from the

  124. sugar pill group will actually report,

  125. man, my pain is going away because they

  126. were told that it was this amazing, you

  127. know, uh, new medical breakthrough pill

  128. that's going to remove their pain. And

  129. isn't it interesting how our mind can

  130. play games on us like that? It's the

  131. placebo effect. Uh, nothing chemically

  132. happened in their body, but somehow

  133. their pain goes away. How does that

  134. happen?

  135. uh doctors have studied it, studied it

  136. for decades and uh they have some ideas

  137. but they can't really uh seem to fully

  138. explain it. And the person sharing that

  139. hey my pain went away uh they're not

  140. lying.

  141. It's not fake. They had an authentic

  142. experience

  143. right where their symptoms

  144. uh were either lessened or completely

  145. went away because they took a sugar

  146. pill. they believe something. Um, that

  147. should scare us a little bit. Amen. That

  148. should that makes me a little

  149. uncomfortable about the power of my mind

  150. and how I can be manipulated or tricked

  151. so easily.

  152. uh

  153. the placebo effect. The problem that

  154. I've seen is that sometimes uh we live

  155. placebo lifestyles

  156. particularly what we're going to talk

  157. about today particularly as it pertains

  158. to peace.

  159. Uh I think we're all guilty of it.

  160. Someone asked me you're having a rough

  161. day right going through it and maybe

  162. you're wearing your emotions on your

  163. face a little bit or your pain on your

  164. face and and people say man what's going

  165. on with you? What's wrong with you? I'm

  166. fine. We all guilty of that. You guys

  167. done it. I'm good. I'm good. You just

  168. kind of You don't want to You don't want

  169. to go there. You don't want to talk. You

  170. don't want to unpack this this thing.

  171. Then so we just say we're fine.

  172. Sometimes uh we do it in marriage,

  173. right? Uh we do it on Instagram.

  174. How about this? You take the family

  175. picture, right? Every Okay. You guys

  176. know, it's one of the things I'm not a

  177. fan of. Everybody get over there and

  178. smile and we all have to fake smile and

  179. like you move in a little bit closer and

  180. like this whole thing, right? And so you

  181. get the family picture and everyone's

  182. smiling. It looks so beautiful. You post

  183. it and everything looks great. And if

  184. you ever uh realize that some of those

  185. pictures that were taken are completely

  186. fake because there was drama and chaos

  187. and dissension going on in the family.

  188. It's a placebo effect of peace. Amen.

  189. picture looks great, but nothing

  190. changed. It's a false

  191. uh example of peace.

  192. Here's the truth about placeos.

  193. They treat the belief of the symptom,

  194. not the disease.

  195. They make you feel like the problem is

  196. handled. And a lot of times in that

  197. placebo effect, uh you stop looking for

  198. a real cure.

  199. Uh think about those controlled studies

  200. if they just kept giving them the sugar

  201. pill, right? Uh over time uh nothing got

  202. cured, nothing got healed in them,

  203. right? And so it would just come back.

  204. The pain or whatever it was would come

  205. back. That's exactly what fake peace

  206. looks like.

  207. You know, we have this kind of issue, I

  208. think, in this culture that we want

  209. everything to be just okay.

  210. Everything's fine. And we don't lie on

  211. purpose about fake peace.

  212. And here's the reality. Sometimes it

  213. actually works,

  214. but it's temporary.

  215. Sometimes it's just emotional. And it's

  216. enough to convince us to not seek out

  217. real peace.

  218. Can I say this? Jesus didn't come to

  219. give us a placebo of peace. Jesus Christ

  220. came that we would have authentic peace

  221. dwelling on the inside of us.

  222. And I've got to say this, he didn't come

  223. to make you feel better.

  224. He came to deal with real pain on the

  225. inside of us. Amen. How many know that

  226. we have real pain?

  227. uh peace uh doesn't always look like

  228. what we classify as peace. Jesus is

  229. given the title prince of peace. You

  230. guys ever heard him called that? And

  231. this prince of peace, we know that peace

  232. is a fruit of the holy spirit, right?

  233. And so under uncction of the spirit, the

  234. prince of peace walks into a temple and

  235. starts flipping over tables. He grabs a

  236. cord and makes a whip out of it and

  237. starts chasing these dudes out of the

  238. temple.

  239. Oh my goodness. Does that sound like

  240. peace?

  241. Can I say this? Uh, sometimes peace

  242. looks different than what we think it

  243. looks like.

  244. Give you a biblical definition of peace.

  245. In the Greek, it has the idea of

  246. wholeness,

  247. meaning that everything is set in right

  248. order,

  249. peace. in creation.

  250. The Bible, when you dig a little bit,

  251. talks about uh that the world was like

  252. chaos. And when you look at the creation

  253. account, it's God putting everything in

  254. right order. Amen.

  255. And that's what Christ does in our life.

  256. He puts everything in right order. The

  257. Hebrew word for peace is shalom. And

  258. it's not quiet,

  259. calm.

  260. It's act it actually means flourishing.

  261. It means that everything is set and

  262. established by God and that life is

  263. happening. Amen.

  264. It's life the way that God designed it.

  265. Uh so this morning I want to kind of

  266. take the lid off a little bit and I want

  267. to challenge us to stop settling for the

  268. sugar pill, the placebo of peace, and

  269. really start to get after it and chase

  270. authentic peace. So I want to give you

  271. five Ps

  272. to real peace.

  273. Five Ps to real peace. Number one is to

  274. perceive fake peace.

  275. To perceive fake peace.

  276. We have to be able to identify where the

  277. enemy is coming to distract us. And the

  278. false substitute. The Bible says the

  279. devil masquerades as an angel of light.

  280. And he will come over and over into your

  281. life with things that have a temporary

  282. type of peace but in the end lead to a

  283. type of destruction or chaos. Amen.

  284. You can write this down if you're taking

  285. notes. Not every calm is from Christ.

  286. Not every calm is from Christ.

  287. Jeremiah chapter 6 is it's an

    Jeremiah 6 chapter mention

  288. interesting portion of scripture. So,

  289. we're seeing uh a people that are in

  290. really imminent imminent danger. Uh

  291. there is real physical crisis pursuing

  292. them. Uh literal invasion and

  293. destruction is knocking at their door.

  294. And the culture has a lot of false

  295. prophets, right? It's these devils

  296. masquerading as uh as angels. And uh

  297. these false prophets, the people are

  298. they're a little uh you know, caught off

  299. guard, man. There were there's invasion,

  300. there's destruction, all this stuff. And

  301. the false prophets uh keep speaking a

  302. false type of peace to them, saying,

  303. "Hey, everything's going to be okay.

  304. Everything's going to be just fine."

  305. When it's actually not. God speaks to

  306. the prophet Jeremiah.

  307. Jeremiah 6:14. This is what God speaks.

    Jeremiah 6:14

  308. They have healed the wound of my people

  309. lightly saying peace. Peace when there

  310. is no peace.

  311. Say placebo.

  312. They're preaching comfort where God is

  313. calling for repentance.

  314. Amen.

  315. It's kind of like putting a band-aid on

  316. a tumor

  317. and and and uh somebody putting a

  318. band-aid on and saying everything's

  319. going to be just fine. Everything's

  320. going to be good. Right? You might

  321. believe it for a minute, but it doesn't

  322. solve the issue. It doesn't heal the

  323. disease.

  324. You don't need a band-aid. You need a

  325. surgeon.

  326. My goodness.

  327. Sometimes

  328. I do pastoral counseling and just having

  329. conversations with different ones and

  330. that feels like I got to bring a pry bar

  331. to the conversation,

  332. right? Well, how are things actually?

  333. I'm ready to get to business, man. Let's

  334. talk about it, right? Let's go there.

  335. Uh, let's deal with the hard stuff. How

  336. is everything in your marriage? It's

  337. fine. How's everything in your finances?

  338. It's okay. How's everything you just and

  339. every I'm like, well, why are we meeting

  340. then? Why were you so desperate to meet

  341. with me if everything's fine and okay

  342. and good and dandy and neat and and you

  343. know what is and so I got to dig a

  344. little bit. And too often we carry that

  345. in our Christian lifestyle,

  346. right? Everything's fine. We got this,

  347. man. The destruction's coming. Chaos is

  348. coming. The enem is coming at every

  349. angle and we're fine. I'm okay. And

  350. we're carrying this weight that you were

  351. never designed to carry.

  352. Man, y'all are way too quiet. I'm going

  353. to start bringing a Nerf gun to church.

  354. Start shooting folks.

  355. Maybe a squirt gun. It's hot enough out

  356. lens. We can we can get squirt guns. I

  357. want I want the big super soakers.

  358. Every time that

  359. we make that confession, I'm fine.

  360. When you're actually not, it's a type of

  361. placebo peace. I'm not going to go

  362. there. I'm not I don't want to deal with

  363. it. I don't want to talk about it. You

  364. have hidden sin. You have abuse. You

  365. have pain. You have addiction. Whatever

  366. that thing is, but you're okay.

  367. We have to get to the place to recognize

  368. fake peace, to deny fake peace, and to

  369. be brutally honest about where we're at

  370. and who we actually are. If we're really

  371. going to find true peace,

  372. sometimes we run to things that we think

  373. will bring us peace, different comforts.

  374. Man, I know uh scrolling is a bit of an

  375. issue these days, right? You ever uh use

  376. it as a distraction, like you got all

  377. the stuff, all the thing, all the

  378. pressures, all the and all of a sudden

  379. you're sucked into scrolling

  380. for an hour.

  381. Okay, confession time. Five hours.

  382. Okay. Uh, 7 hours. Have you guys ever

  383. done the thing where you get back in

  384. your phone and you see how many how much

  385. time you spend on a specific app? Oh,

  386. don't. It's dangerous. Yeah. I'm like,

  387. how long did I sit and spend doing

  388. absolutely ridiculous nothing? My little

  389. thumbs all wore out.

  390. Yeah. Distraction

  391. from what's actually happening.

  392. It's like taking a fake sugar pill and

  393. calling it a solution. You can put this

  394. in your notes. Distraction is not

  395. disciplehip.

  396. Oh my goodness. That'll preach right

  397. there. Distraction is not disciplehip.

  398. Uh in the Bible, you'll read about a

  399. prophet named Jonah, a man named Jonah.

  400. Um interesting guy. God gives him this

  401. specific assignment and really has a

  402. blessing with this assignment. And Jonah

  403. runs the exact opposite direction. Says,

  404. "I ain't doing that."

  405. Anyone in here ever done that? Y'all way

  406. too holy on me this morning.

  407. >> Yeah. God's saying, "This is what you

  408. need to do." And you're like, "Uh-uh,

  409. check, please. I'm out." And that's what

  410. Jonah's doing. Uh he's running away from

  411. the assignment, running away from the

  412. obedience. He's on a boat and uh this

  413. storm comes up and really he he's the

  414. one that caused the storm, right? And

  415. Jonah uh is sleeping.

  416. in the boat,

  417. falls fast asleep

  418. during the storm. And I'm guessing uh it

  419. was a false type of peace that he felt

  420. because he was running from the

  421. assignment, the thing that he didn't

  422. want to do. And Jonah felt a type of

  423. relief.

  424. Uh if you ask Jonah, he'd probably

  425. hyperspiritualize it and say, "I have

  426. peace about that."

  427. Yeah. this nap. I'm going to go take a

  428. nap. Storm's going. I have peace about

  429. not going to Nineveh. I have peace about

  430. that.

  431. How many of us do that? God's saying,

  432. "This is what you got to do. This is who

  433. you need to talk to. This is what you

  434. need to all this stuff." And I'm like,

  435. "I'm not having that conversation."

  436. Right? And we bail. Well, I'm running

  437. the other direction. I don't want

  438. anything to do with that. And we get

  439. over here and we have this false sense

  440. of peace. I have peace about that. that

  441. we never dealt with the issue. Oh my

  442. goodness.

  443. It wasn't peace. It was relief from

  444. responsibility disguised as peace. We're

  445. talking about a placebo effect of peace.

  446. Relief is not peace.

  447. Here's the test that we want to use. If

  448. the peace that you feel is on the other

  449. side of running from God, it's not

  450. peace. It's escape.

  451. Some of y'all need to be taking notes,

  452. man. I'm preaching to you.

  453. Why do we call it peace? I over the

  454. years in ministry, I've watched so many

  455. people walk away from exactly what God

  456. has for them

  457. and they report a sense of peace because

  458. they're no longer under the pressure of

  459. the thing, right?

  460. they step out of ministry or they step

  461. out of this or they don't do that. Some

  462. been had several that we've counseledled

  463. and my wife and I man we've poured into

  464. them and loved them, worked on their

  465. marriage, helped them and one person

  466. just gives up and does the divorce then

  467. they talk about I have peace about that.

  468. What you're in covenant relationship

  469. and you have no biblical grounds for

  470. divorce and you have peace. Oh my I just

  471. felt some toes go

  472. How do you have peace about running from

  473. God's will for your life? Sometimes it

  474. is genuine freedom, you know, from toxic

  475. or sinful situations. And praise God

  476. that people get out of that. But

  477. sometimes, if we're honest, it's just

  478. Jonah sleeping in the boat saying, "I

  479. feel fine. I'm good to go."

  480. Fake peace is when relief replaces

  481. repentance.

  482. Paul the Apostle gives a warning to

  483. those in the last days. 1 Thessalonians

  484. 5, he says, "While people are saying

  485. peace and security, sudden destruction

  486. will come upon them."

  487. Man, we're Americans. We have our peace

  488. a lot of times on all the wrong things.

  489. Bank accounts, politics, good health,

  490. right? Uh man, we we fight we fight for

  491. uh the a type of peace that the world

  492. says, man, if I could just if I could

  493. just get that uh uh get that lake

  494. property, boy, that'd really bring peace

  495. to my life. If I could just get that new

  496. vehicle, I wouldn't have to worry about

  497. this. If I could just not have any debt,

  498. I could have peace. And we go through

  499. all these things. Then how many of us

  500. have lived long enough to get chase

  501. those things and get those things? Then

  502. you're standing in the place that you

  503. thought would bring you peace and you

  504. still are you and you don't have the

  505. peace that you hoped you'd have. Good

  506. for a little bit.

  507. But true peace is on the inside.

  508. Worldly fake peace is when we build our

  509. calm

  510. on circumstances instead of Christ. The

  511. Bible says to not love the world or the

  512. things in the world.

  513. That false peace can feel

  514. very real

  515. until circumstances change

  516. till things collapse.

  517. We find out that it was never really

  518. anchored in Christ.

  519. So not every calm is from Christ.

  520. Distraction is not disciplehip. I want

  521. to say this, fake peace is dangerous.

  522. So where in the world do we find the

  523. real thing?

  524. How do we know for sure that we've got

  525. the real thing? Number two in your notes

  526. is pursue peace with God.

  527. Pursue peace

  528. with God. 1 Peter 3:11

    1 Peter 3:11

  529. says they must not I'm sorry. They must

  530. turn from evil and do good. They must

  531. seek peace and pursue it.

  532. Seek peace

  533. and pursue it.

  534. Here's the truth that changes everything

  535. in your life. Real peace isn't a

  536. circumstance. It's a person.

  537. I call him Jesus. Amen.

  538. >> Real peace has very little to do with

  539. circumstances of life. It has everything

  540. to do with who you're doing this life

  541. with. Are you doing it with Jesus?

  542. H we don't find real peace by managing

  543. our emotions better,

  544. organizing our schedule better,

  545. right?

  546. By positive thinking. Just positive

  547. thinking. That tastes that sounds like

  548. taking a sugar pill and thinking

  549. everything's all right.

  550. We seek Jesus. One of the things I love

  551. about the Bible is how brutally honest

  552. it is about who we were before we

  553. received Jesus.

  554. The Bible says Romans 5:10 that we were

    Romans 5:10

  555. uh enemies of God. We like to think

  556. that, you know, life was pretty good and

  557. then I started going to church and I

  558. prayed the prayer and life's a little

  559. bit better now because I just I had some

  560. stuff that I hadn't worked, you know,

  561. and I'm so I'm so thankful for my church

  562. community.

  563. I live in America, man. I I've watched

  564. the church make a radical shift away

  565. from we were enemies with God. We were

  566. at odds with a loving God. We were at

  567. war with God. Everything about us, my

  568. righteousness was as a filthy rags. And

  569. and the blood of Jesus Christ reconciled

  570. me to a loving father. I was in

  571. hostility with God. Amen. And I needed a

  572. savior. I needed redemption. Somehow

  573. through the blood of Jesus Christ, I am

  574. now at peace with the father. And the

  575. father is at peace with me.

  576. I need peace. Romans 5'8 says, "While we

  577. were still sinners, Christ died for us."

  578. We weren't really seeking after him. He

  579. was seeking after us while we were still

  580. sinners. Colossians 1:20

    Colossians 1:20

  581. says, "Having made peace through the

  582. blood of his cross,

  583. Jesus Christ is the one that took the

  584. hostility. He took the rebellion. He

  585. took the record of wrongs for us and he

  586. demolished it hanging on a bloodstained

  587. cross." Amen. That's how we get peace

  588. with God. Sometimes we'll get in a

  589. position that we understand that at

  590. salvation, but we'll live our life and

  591. all of a sudden 20 years of serving God

  592. and we're now experiencing a type of

  593. anxiety, a type of fear, a type of

  594. worry. And what we don't do is do the

  595. same thing that saved our soul in this

  596. moment and run it through the blood.

  597. Amen. And by running it through the

  598. blood, what I mean is agreeing with the

  599. price that was paid. I don't have to I

  600. don't have to have this anxiety, this

  601. fear, this worry because it was bought

  602. and paid for and nailed on a blood

  603. stained cross. Amen.

  604. You can't manufacture peace by cleaning

  605. yourself up.

  606. You receive it by trusting in the

  607. finished work of Jesus Christ. And once

  608. you have that peace with God, there's a

  609. new problem that I found. Keeping it.

  610. Amen.

  611. Keeping the peace.

  612. Number three in your notes is protect

  613. inner peace.

  614. Protect inner peace.

  615. I got to tell you, getting peace is just

  616. the beginning.

  617. We have a very real enemy

  618. of our soul seeking to steal, kill, and

  619. destroy.

  620. And honestly,

  621. the enemy often times is our own flesh.

  622. Amen.

  623. Trying to steal your peace. And I'll say

  624. this every single day.

  625. There's a potential the enemy is trying

  626. to steal your peace. Now, why would the

  627. devil be so adamant about trying to

  628. steal your peace? Could it be one of the

  629. more valuable things in the kingdom of

  630. God in the life of a believer

  631. that I'm at peace? That I have God's

  632. peace in the midst of chaos, in the

  633. midst of the storm, when the

  634. circumstances doesn't go my way. Amen.

  635. I have peace

  636. when the diagnosis comes.

  637. when

  638. the devastation falls, when all somehow

  639. I have peace, right? And we'll forfeit

  640. our peace for some of the most

  641. ridiculous things.

  642. Uh a person sitting in a green light

  643. instead of going,

  644. we'll just completely forfeit our peace.

  645. Guilty as charged. I'm just like,

  646. right.

  647. green. Hang up your phone and go person.

  648. Right.

  649. All upset. I'm I'm a honker. Right. My

  650. my family hates it, but I'm just like,

  651. let's get it going. Yeah. We'll

  652. completely forfeit our peace for the

  653. most ridiculous things.

  654. Man, we're a selfish, spoiled little

  655. generation.

  656. It didn't go my way. And we talk to God

  657. like that. God, you didn't do what I

  658. wanted you to do when when I wanted you

  659. to do it.

  660. Yeah.

  661. Forfeiting our peace because we're

  662. listening to the flesh. We're not

  663. protecting the peace. We really need to

  664. pursue peace.

  665. Is it worth it to get all upset and let

  666. yourself get in chaos?

  667. or are we fighting to protect the peace?

  668. I love the story when Jesus is in the

  669. boat. We talked about Jonah and Jesus is

  670. in the boat with his disciples and uh

  671. man, this violent storm comes rolling up

  672. and uh it's these are professional

  673. fishermen and these guys are used to the

  674. waters and these guys are scared for

  675. their life. They think they're going to

  676. die. This is how violent the storm is.

  677. And they go looking for Jesus. Where's

  678. Jesus?

  679. He's sleeping on the boat, right? And so

  680. they go to wake up Jesus. And I'm

  681. guessing uh that it wasn't this uh

  682. Jesus,

  683. Jesus, are you are you awake? Right? I'm

  684. guessing these guys were like flipping

  685. their lid. Mark 4:38 says Jesus was in

    Mark 4:38

  686. the stern asleep on a cushion and uh

  687. they finally wake him up and they say,

  688. "Teacher, do you not care that we're

  689. perishing?

  690. You obviously don't care that I'm dying

  691. in this." We pray this way, don't we?

  692. The storm comes and it's like, "Where's

  693. Jesus?" Well, you obviously don't care

  694. about me. Why are you letting this

  695. happen to me? You're letting this storm

  696. rage and I feel like I'm going to die.

  697. All this stuff. We just get so crazy.

  698. And Jesus, we're looking for Jesus to

  699. calm the storm for us. And Jesus is

  700. looking for us to calm the storm in our

  701. life. Amen.

  702. They wake up Jesus. He gets up there. He

  703. says three words.

  704. Peace. Be still.

  705. Right? And there's this great calm. He

  706. turns to them and says, "Why are you so

  707. afraid?

  708. Have you still no faith?" Listen, we

  709. have the type of faith, if you're a

  710. believer, you have the type of faith to

  711. look at that mountain and say,

  712. "Mountain, jump into the sea." And that

  713. mountain will jump into the sea. And

  714. that's the type of faith that we have,

  715. right? And somehow the littlest

  716. circumstance will shift in our life. And

  717. we don't have any faith and we're just

  718. going to die. And God, why did you do

  719. this?

  720. Maybe God has allowed the storms in your

  721. life on purpose so that you would tap

  722. into a faith that brings peace to the

  723. circumstance.

  724. Here's the revelation. Storms aren't

  725. sent to destroy you. They're sent to

  726. transform you.

  727. Oh, that'll preach right there, baby.

  728. That's good.

  729. Yeah.

  730. Why' you send a storm, God, just to kill

  731. us? Maybe it's sent to transform your

  732. heart.

  733. Maybe God hasn't stopped every storm in

  734. your life on purpose. And listen, it's

  735. not because he doesn't care about you.

  736. We'll believe that lie. It's because he

  737. cares more about you learning peace and

  738. faith.

  739. Say, protect peace.

  740. And Jesus is in the garden of

  741. Gethsemane.

  742. He's praying. He's sweating great drops

  743. of blood. and the sins of all mankind

  744. are falling upon him. Right? This is a

  745. moment. This is pressure. I would say

  746. this, the greatest pressure that any

  747. human has ever felt on the planet is

  748. Jesus praying in the garden of

  749. Gethsemane. What's he say? He says,

  750. "Lord, if there's any way for this cup

  751. to pass from me, let's do that. Let's

  752. change the circumstance." But here's his

  753. heart. Not my will, but your will be

  754. done, God. Right? I'm I'm not going to

  755. pin you down, God, and make you change

  756. my circumstances because I'm

  757. uncomfortable at the I'm hoping if

  758. there's any other way, let's do that.

  759. But but but not my will.

  760. Your will be done.

  761. Peace is not escaping pressure.

  762. Peace, true peace is accepting God's

  763. will in the midst of pressure.

  764. Jesus doesn't get a different cup. He

  765. doesn't get a different circumstance in

  766. Gethsemane. what he gets is a deeper yes

  767. to the obedience. Amen.

  768. Because if you pray and ask, here's

  769. here's what we do sometimes. We're

  770. praying and asking, "God, I don't like

  771. the circumstance. I don't like the

  772. pressure. I don't like that thing. I'm

  773. uncomfortable in this." We'll say, "God,

  774. can we do something else here, right?

  775. I'm begging you, please." And then we

  776. won't hear the answer from God that we

  777. want. And we'll leave the pressure

  778. anyways.

  779. And we'll say, "Well, I feel relief

  780. because I'm no longer under that

  781. pressure.

  782. It's the placebo of peace.

  783. Getting peace doesn't always mean

  784. getting different circumstances.

  785. Staying

  786. in the circumstance will give you a

  787. deeper yes.

  788. When God answers, you get a confirmation

  789. of yes, I'm supposed to walk through

  790. this. And he that is in me is greater

  791. than he that is in this world. And I

  792. start laying claim to the promises of

  793. God. And Lord, if you want me to stay

  794. here, I'll stay here. Lord, if you want

  795. me to walk through hell and high water

  796. to get there, I'll walk through hell and

  797. high water to get there. But I will not

  798. abort mission because I'm uncomfortable.

  799. Amen. What the church needs are some

  800. people with some faith, man. People with

  801. a backbone, people that are willing to

  802. get up and go and do what God is asking

  803. them to do. We have become a powderpuff

  804. faith culture.

  805. I'm uncomfortable. I didn't like that. I

  806. can't believe the way that he said that

  807. from the pulpit. I'm We're not going

  808. back there next Sunday. You You sounded

  809. mad.

  810. Find every reason to not do what God's

  811. asking us to do.

  812. We protect peace

  813. the same way that we would defend

  814. anything valuable from God. Number four

  815. in your notes is to permit peace to

  816. rule.

  817. permit peace to rule.

  818. Here's the shift

  819. uh is when we give peace absolute

  820. authority in our lives. Colossians 3:15

    Colossians 3:15

  821. will change your life. It says, "Let the

  822. peace of Christ rule in your hearts."

  823. My goodness, that's good stuff. Let here

  824. has the idea of surrender. It's like the

  825. peace is is coming at you. It's freely

  826. available like like God's trying to push

  827. it in. And let is have the idea of

  828. surrender. Surrender to God's peace.

  829. Amen.

  830. Let the peace of Christ rule in your

  831. hearts.

  832. The word rule here is phenomenal.

  833. It's where we get our word umpire.

  834. Say umpire.

  835. Any baseball fans here?

  836. Couple. Right. You got the umpire. He's

  837. calling the shots. He's saying foul

  838. strike. Right? And I got to say this,

  839. the umpire is probably the least popular

  840. guy on the field. You watch the game,

  841. who do you yell at? Yell at the umpire.

  842. Oh, come on. Right? Same as other

  843. sports, you yell at the referee.

  844. And to let the peace of Christ umpire

  845. our hearts means that we allow the peace

  846. of God to call foul,

  847. to call strike.

  848. to call out of bounds

  849. whatever it is and we submit ourselves

  850. to that not my will Lord but your will

  851. be done

  852. about to send that angry text

  853. peace of God blows the whistle

  854. strike

  855. it's upsetting you stop but you get to

  856. respond to it Right.

  857. We've had this one happen.

  858. We're about to gossip. We're about to

  859. repeat something that we heard in

  860. confidence. You'll never guess what they

  861. just told me. And the peace of God

  862. brings a check to my spirit. I don't

  863. have peace about that. Right? I don't

  864. have peace about that.

  865. Peace throws the flag.

  866. Umpire's not always popular.

  867. But he's the one that we should listen

  868. to.

  869. 1 Corinthians 14:33

    1 Corinthians 14:33

  870. says, "God is not the author of

  871. confusion, but of peace."

  872. We allow peace to umpire our hearts

  873. so that peace can umpire our homes so

  874. that peace can umpire

  875. our relationships at work. So peace can

  876. umpire everything that we do. Amen.

  877. God is not the author of confusion but

  878. of peace. And permitting peace uh to

  879. rule includes what you allow in your

  880. mind, what you think about, what you

  881. give yourself to. Too often we'll think

  882. about whatever we feel like thinking

  883. about. We'll give ourselves to the

  884. negative thoughts,

  885. the gossip type thoughts,

  886. the victim mentality thoughts, and we'll

  887. say, "God, give me peace. God, God, if

  888. you could just give me peace." But we

  889. never allow peace to rule our mind.

  890. Philippians chapter 4, Paul said this.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  891. He said, "Whatever is true, whatever is

  892. noble, whatever is right, whatever is

  893. pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is

  894. admirable, think about such things and

  895. the God of peace will be with you."

  896. Isn't that good,

  897. man? It matters what you think about.

  898. Permit peace to rule. Let peace have

  899. authority over your mind, over your

  900. emotions, over your heart. All right,

  901. you guys ready for the final P?

  902. >> Number five is prevail as peacemakers.

  903. Prevail as peacemakers.

  904. Uh we didn't we don't receive peace just

  905. to keep peace. We receive peace to

  906. release peace to share it with others.

  907. Matthew chapter 5 and verse 9, this is

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  908. where we started and this is where we're

  909. going to end. Jesus says, "Blessed are

  910. the peacemakers, for they shall be

  911. called sons of God."

  912. Blessed are the peacemakers. He doesn't

  913. say, "Blessed are the peacekeepers."

  914. Oh my good. There's a huge difference,

  915. you guys. Huge difference between

  916. peacemaking.

  917. Peacekeeping. Peacekeeping is kind of

  918. the placebo version of peacemaking.

  919. Peacekeepers say, "I'll do whatever it

  920. takes to to make everything fine, to

  921. make everything calm, to make everything

  922. all right." Okay? You guys ever done

  923. this before? I don't want to I don't

  924. want to make waves. I don't want to

  925. stir. So, I'll just I'll just pull back.

  926. We do it in parenting. We'll avoid uh a

  927. a tantrum in the store and we'll just

  928. let them have what they what their

  929. little selfish rear ends are hungry for.

  930. Right.

  931. Raising kids is a trip, I gotta tell

  932. you.

  933. Yeah. We'll avoid uh having healthy

  934. established boundaries in relationships

  935. and parenting relationships and marriage

  936. relationships uh because we don't want

  937. to uh we we don't want to be the bad

  938. guy, right? And so we become

  939. peacekeepers instead of peacemakers.

  940. What is peace? Peace is everything set

  941. and established right in his eyes.

  942. That's what peace is. Peace has a name.

  943. It's Jesus. It's inviting Jesus into

  944. this thing. And man, we we we have

  945. boundaries. We we establish some things.

  946. And I'm willing to say what needs to be

  947. said and and go where I need to go and

  948. do what I need to do to make peace. And

  949. I'm not shrinking back passively just to

  950. keep peace. You guys catching the

  951. difference?

  952. >> Peacekeeping avoids conflict.

  953. Peacemakers engage conflict

  954. redemptively.

  955. Big difference.

  956. Peacekeepers smooth things over.

  957. Peacemakers dig things out.

  958. Matthew 5 23,

  959. an amazing scripture.

  960. Jesus says, "So if you're offering your

  961. gift at the temple altar, and you

  962. remember there that your brother has

  963. something against you, leave your gift

  964. where it is by the altar and go make

  965. peace with your brother. then come back

  966. and offer your gift. This is wild. Think

  967. about the emphasis that Jesus has here.

  968. He says, "Man, if you're if you're up

  969. here worshiping, you come to the altar,

  970. right? And you're coming with a

  971. sacrifice and all this stuff and you

  972. remember an offense or something that's

  973. not right with another person." He says,

  974. "You just leave your stuff right there

  975. and go make it right. Go find them and

  976. reconcile." This is active peacemaking.

  977. Not shrinking back until everything

  978. blows over.

  979. Active.

  980. It's going. It's speaking. It's

  981. reconciling.

  982. I want to say this.

  983. Jesus doesn't bless peacekeepers. He

  984. blesses peacemakers.

  985. Am I preaching that heavy? Y'all are so

  986. quiet in the house of God.

  987. Be a peacemaker.

  988. I'll say this. Peacemakers being a

  989. peacemaker requires both truth and love.

  990. Ephesians 4:15

    Ephesians 4:15

  991. gives us the command to speak the truth

  992. in love. Uh what I've learned is that

  993. truth without love is cruelty or

  994. brutality.

  995. We find this too often in the church

  996. world.

  997. Speaking truth without love.

  998. Also, love without truth is

  999. sentimentality.

  1000. It's passive. It's making an allowance

1001. for something that's probably not

1002. healthy for them. Love without truth is

1003. destructive. Amen. Just as destructive

  1004. as truth without love.

1005. So peacemaking requires both truth and

  1006. love.

1007. not angry. I'm not going to express

1008. anger, but I do want to have a

  1009. conversation with you.

  1010. Amen.

  1011. It's having a bold type faith

1012. uncction of the Holy Spirit to make sure

1013. that things are right. Matthew 18 gives

1014. us the charge to a brother sinned

1015. against you. You go and talk to them

  1016. yourself personally,

1017. not to 35 people in the church and on

1018. social media and everywhere else, right?

1019. No, we do that. Why?

1020. You're offended by something. You go

1021. everywhere else but the person. Matthew

1022. 18 says you go to that person.

1023. You talk to them. You reconcile it. He

1024. gives further instruction. If they're

1025. not receptive to that, man, there

1026. there's other things we can do. And you

1027. bring another person with you and say,

1028. "Man, I really want to make things

  1029. right. I'm really I'm really hung. I

  1030. want I don't I don't like this this

1031. distance between us. This dissension. I

1032. don't like it." Then you find another

1033. brother or sister in the faith. You go

1034. to them. You love on them. Say, "Man,

1035. this is our heart." May maybe you might

1036. be wrong. Maybe the other person that

1037. you brought will say, "Dude, you're you

1038. completely missed it, right?" And you

  1039. can make it right.

1040. That doesn't work. says, "Man, take it

1041. before the elders of the church." All

1042. right, this is an issue.

1043. What we have are too often people that

1044. refuse Matthew 18 principle. They refuse

  1045. to be peacemakers.

1046. And to keep the peace, we'll just leave

  1047. the church then.

1048. And we see I see these people couldn't

1049. settle here, right? I'm not talking

1050. about this church specifically. I've

1051. been in church for a while. But then

1052. they'll go to a different church and

1053. they hear the story a couple years later

  1054. they're the same issue. It's just a

1055. different per set of people. Then

1056. they'll go to the next church and

1057. they'll go to the next church just to

1058. keep the peace and we don't want to

1059. confront things. We don't want to do

1060. this. And they'll go and there's enough

1061. churches in Fort Wayne. You can just

  1062. keep doing that, right?

1063. Might be a Lutheran next year. You don't

  1064. know.

  1065. Yeah.

1066. Matthew 18, go to the person, speak,

  1067. reconcile,

  1068. restore.

1069. I'll share this. If I'm talking to

  1070. everybody

1071. except the person that I'm actually

  1072. upset with, I'm not a peacekeeper. I'm a

  1073. fire starter.

1074. I'm not I'm not making peace by

  1075. gossiping about it.

1076. And I'll say this, peacekeeping is

  1077. emotionally draining.

1078. You're constantly trying to manage

1079. everyone else's emotions. I just want to

1080. keep the peace. I just want to keep the

1081. peace. And it's at the the the fault of

1082. your own your own heart as a consequence

1083. when you just keep the peace and keep

1084. the peace and keep the peace. And we

1085. don't want to we become overly passive.

  1086. There's a toll. Peacemakers are

1087. different. They say what needs to be

  1088. said to bring peace

  1089. or

1090. they'll choose restraint when they could

  1091. respond.

  1092. Making peace.

1093. Not I've learned this. Not everything

  1094. requires a response.

1095. A lot of people take the personality

  1096. test. I'm almost 100% extroverted. I

1097. don't have a whole lot of internal going

1098. on up here. Right. My wife asked me what

  1099. you're thinking and I'm like nothing.

1100. And I'm telling the truth. Like there's

1101. actually nothing. It's pretty quiet up

1102. here. My daughters have talked to me.

  1103. They're like, "You don't have an

1104. internal dialogue going on. Like you're

1105. no what you see is what you get, right?"

1106. So sometimes things just fall out of my

1107. mouth. And I'm like, "But what are you

1108. doing? Not supposed to say that." I

1109. learned not everything needs a response.

  1110. Making peace sometimes is

  1111. keeping your mouth quiet.

  1112. H not every response requires a

  1113. reaction.

1114. When somebody says something, it doesn't

  1115. require that I right. We're making

  1116. peace.

  1117. Pause before you post.

  1118. Yeah.

  1119. Pause before you post.

1120. You ever been angry about to send it?

1121. You know what I'm talking about.

  1122. Yeah.

1123. Holy Spirit checks you. Pause before you

1124. post. Pray before you pounce.

1125. Man, that'd be a good bumper sticker,

  1126. wouldn't it?

1127. I need that. God delivered me out of

1128. anger and rage. I need that. Pray before

  1129. you pounce.

  1130. Yeah.

1131. What's the Bible say? Be quick to

1132. listen. Slow to speak, slow to become

  1133. angry.

1134. Your anger doesn't do anything good for

  1135. the righteousness of God.

  1136. Make these Hebrews 12:14,

    Hebrews 12:14

1137. catch this. He says, "Make every

1138. effort." Wow, that's hefty scripture.

1139. Make every effort, catch this, to live

1140. at peace with everyone that you like in

  1141. the church.

1142. >> You guys ever wish it says other things?

1143. everyone that you get along with at the

  1144. family reunion.

1145. It says, "Make every effort

1146. to live in peace with everyone

  1147. and to be holy.

1148. Without holiness, no one will see the

  1149. Lord."

1150. To live at peace with everyone.

1151. That's the person that you stopped

1152. talking to several years ago because

  1153. they hurt you.

1154. Make every effort to live at peace

1155. with everyone. Peacemakers, you make

1156. every effort to make peace.

1157. I think I'm upsetting some of you.

  1158. You're making a list of people you're

1159. going to have to call after church

  1160. today.

  1161. Romans 14:19

    Romans 14:19

1162. says, "Let us therefore make every

1163. effort to do what leads to peace and to

  1164. mutual edification."

1165. Edification means building up. It's

  1166. encouraging. It's positive.

  1167. Do whatever it takes.

1168. make every effort to do what leads to

  1169. peace.

1170. Not what makes a temporary calm now.

1171. I'm fine. It's okay. But do whatever it

1172. takes to lead to peace. That

1173. conversation that you're afraid to have

1174. could lead to peace in that relationship

  1175. and bring unity. Amen.

1176. Matthew 5:9, he says, "Blessed are the

    Matthew 5:9

1177. peacemakers. Catch this. for they shall

  1178. be called

  1179. sons of God.

  1180. Being a peace maker

1181. puts us in position to be a son or a

  1182. daughter of God.

1183. Can I share with you? You can't skip

  1184. this step.

1185. You can't skip this step.

  1186. Blessed are the peacemakers.

1187. They'll be the children of God.

1188. Peacemakers run towards the resolution.

  1189. They understand that temporary

  1190. discomfort

  1191. sometimes is the price

  1192. of lasting peace.

1193. Let's stand to our feet all over this

  1194. house.

1195. We don't like to admit it, but oftent

1196. times we're peacekeepers instead of

  1197. peacemakers.

1198. And I don't want to leave here today

  1199. a peacekeeper. Amen.

1200. I don't want you to leave here today

  1201. just protecting status quo.

1202. I want you to leave here as sons and

  1203. daughters, peacemakers

1204. in the kingdom of God.

  1205. Pray about it.

1206. Be who God's called you to be. Do what

1207. God's called you to do. Say what God

  1208. needs you to say.

1209. My sense is that some of you are

  1210. standing in a storm.

  1211. You've prayed about it.

  1212. You've

1213. prayed in such a way as to wake up Jesus

1214. and tell him you're dying.

1215. My sense is that God is speaking to your

  1216. storm. Peace be still.

1217. But he's also challenging us. Ye of

  1218. little faith.

1219. I believe that God is raising up

1220. men and women of faith that have the

1221. peace of God that surpasses

1222. understanding, guarding our hearts and

1223. our minds in Christ Jesus. I believe

1224. that God is raising up people that are

1225. willing to step up and step out in the

1226. sake of peace for the kingdom of God.

  1227. Amen.

1228. Ask the worship team to join me up here.

1229. Father, I thank you, Lord.

1230. So, you haven't called us to live in a

  1231. fake calm,

1232. but Father, you have called us to live

1233. in your peace, in your grace, and in

  1234. your mercy.

1235. And so, Father, we pray that we would

1236. even speak to our own soul, peace be

  1237. still.

1238. God, that we would receive peace as it's

1239. matured in us through the fruits of the

  1240. Holy Spirit.

1241. Father, that we would allow your peace

1242. to umpire our souls, our hearts, and our

1243. minds. Father, that we would be a living

  1244. testimony of your peace.

1245. Father, I pray that every room that we

  1246. walk into

1247. that we carry the peace of God.

1248. Father, I pray that people that know us

1249. just sense a peace that came from heaven

1250. when they speak with us.

1251. God, that we would be your children and

1252. that you would be our God.

1253. Father, that we would serve you well.

1254. Lord, I thank you for this people. I

1255. release blessing upon every household

1256. represented here. Release peace upon

1257. their souls, upon their mind.

1258. And father as the enemy comes to

1259. distract and to cause chaos and

  1260. confusion, disruption, anxieties,

  1261. father,

1262. I break the curse and I speak against

1263. the work of the enemy over every life in

  1264. this room.

  1265. Peace be still.

1266. Thank you Lord. We receive you today. We

1267. thank you for it Lord in Jesus name. And

  1268. God's people said, "Amen. Let's worship

1269. the Lord together. The altars are open,

  1270. won't you come?"
