  1. Hey, welcome to Gray Summit Church

  2. Podcast. We're so glad you're here.

  3. We're all about helping people know

  4. Jesus, grow in their faith,

  5. and live out his love every day.

  6. No matter where you're at in your faith

  7. journey, our prayers that this message

  8. helps you know Jesus more and live with

  9. greater purpose and conviction.

  10. Let's jump in.

  11. How many of you remember church

  12. bulletins? Remember them?

  13. These are some actual

  14. bloopers out of church bulletins.

  15. Don't let worry kill

  16. you. Let the church help.

  17. Please remember in prayer the many who

  18. are sick of our church and community.

  19. The rosebud on the altar this morning is

  20. to announce the birth of David Allen

  21. Belzer, the sin of

  22. Reverend and Mrs. Julius Belzer.

  23. These are, I didn't make this up.

  24. The senior choir invites any member of

  25. the congregation who enjoys

  26. sinning to join the choir.

  27. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 p.m. at

  28. the First Presbyterian Church. Please use

  29. the large double doors

  30. at the side entrance.

  31. Announcement in the church bulletin for a

  32. national prayer and fasting conference.

  33. The cost for attending the fasting and

  34. prayer conference includes your meals.

  35. Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale.

  36. It's a chance to get rid of those things

  37. not worth keeping around the house.

  38. Don't forget your husbands.

  39. And finally, for those of you who have

  40. children and don't know it,

  41. we have a nursery downstairs.

  42. Bring back the bulletins.

  43. Hey, good to see everybody. Summer's

  44. winding down, man. Isn't it?

  45. Kind of in the homestretch. How many are

  46. ready for hoodies and fires?

  47. There was a little fire in that little

  48. video that we just saw.

  49. And my wife and I are going camping.

  50. We're going to be sitting

  51. around one of those tonight.

  52. But I want to talk

  53. about another kind of fire.

  54. And if you would go with me to the book

  55. of Acts, chapter 2, we'll draw our text

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  56. from verses 36 through 39.

  57. That is the fire of the Holy Spirit.

  58. "Therefore let all the house of Israel

  59. know assuredly that God has made this

  60. Jesus whom you

  61. crucified both Lord and Christ."

  62. "Now when they heard this, they were cut

  63. to the heart and said to Peter and the

  64. rest of the apostles,

  65. "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

  66. Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let

  67. every one of you be baptized

  68. in the name of Jesus Christ

  69. for the remission of sins, and you shall

  70. receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,

  71. for the promise is to you and to your

  72. children and to all who are afar off,

  73. as many as the Lord our God will call."

  74. God give us ears to hear what the Spirit

  75. is saying to the church this morning.

  76. I want to talk to you about

  77. being under the influence.

  78. Now being somewhat of an expert on being

  79. under the influence,

  80. one thing I learned through the various

  81. things that I've tried,

  82. and I was going to say experimented, but

  83. that wouldn't be proper.

  84. But one of the things I've learned is

  85. that what goes up must come down.

  86. But we're looking here at a man named

  87. Peter who is under the influence.

  88. And Peter tells everyone in the crowd and

  89. extending on to you and I that the Holy

  90. Spirit is a free gift,

  91. subsequent to salvation, it is a gift

  92. whereby you can get up

  93. under the influence of,

  94. and it won't damage you and it won't take

  95. your self-respect and you

  96. won't end up in jail probably.

  97. There ain't no high like the most high.

  98. Let me put it that way.

  99. And Peter is under the influence as well

  100. as many other people that had come out of

  101. a little upper room.

  102. They had been up there praying.

  103. This is the day of Pentecost, 50 days

  104. after the resurrection of Christ, 10 days

  105. after the ascension of Christ.

  106. And Jesus had told his followers at the

  107. ascension that he's

  108. going to give them power,

  109. that the promise of the Father, the Holy

  110. Spirit was going to come, but he said,

  111. "Wait in the city of Jerusalem until you

  112. be endowed with that power."

  113. The word power in Acts

  114. 1.8 is dunamis in the Greek.

  115. And it's a word that means power, force,

  116. might and ability,

  117. energy, strength, abundance.

  118. It is the root word of where

  119. we get our word dynamite from.

  120. It is also related to dynamo or dynamic.

  121. The Holy Spirit is a power that God gives

  122. us subsequent to salvation that is

  123. available to every single one of us.

  124. Now Peter had been a man before

  125. Pentecost, before this experience,

  126. who denied that he

  127. even knew who Jesus was.

  128. When the pressure was on and people were

  129. asking him, "Weren't you with him?"

  130. He's like, "I don't even know who he is."

  131. And now the same man under the influence

  132. of the Holy Spirit steps up and preaches

  133. an in-your-face message,

  134. so impactful that the people in the crowd

  135. were cut to the heart

  136. and asked the question,

  137. as every preacher wants you to ask at the

  138. end of a message, "What do we do?

  139. How do we apply this to our lives? What

  140. does this mean for us?"

  141. And so they asked Peter that question.

  142. So Peter is deeply under the

  143. influence of the Holy Spirit.

  144. Now the Holy Spirit is way too vast of a

  145. topic for me to tackle in a short time.

  146. You see it in the second verse of the

  147. Bible, Genesis 1, verse 2, you see the

    Genesis 1:2

  148. Holy Spirit hovering

  149. over the face of the waters.

  150. You see it in the last couple of verses

  151. in Revelation 22 at the

  152. very end of the Bible,

  153. "The Spirit and the bride say, Come."

  154. The Holy Spirit is way too big for us to

  155. cover all of this in

  156. one particular message,

  157. but I want to narrow the conversation

  158. down to this thing here,

  159. staying under the influence.

  160. There's a couple of key verses I'd like

  161. to give you at this point.

  162. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 30 says, "Not

    Ephesians 4:30

  163. to grieve the Holy Spirit of God."

  164. First Thessalonians chapter 5, verse 19

    1 Thessalonians 5:19

  165. says, "Not to quench the Spirit of God."

  166. So it's one thing to

  167. receive the Holy Spirit,

  168. to have the influence of the Holy Spirit

  169. on you to where it radically

  170. changes you and makes you bold

  171. and brings you into an arena where you

  172. can have power and

  173. miracles and faith and healings

  174. and all the things that happen under the

  175. influence of the Holy Spirit.

  176. There's also the fruit of the Spirit

  177. listed in Galatians 5,

  178. love and joy and peace and patience and

  179. gentleness and

  180. faithfulness and self-control.

  181. These are all things that the Holy Spirit

  182. will bring into your life

  183. if you're under the

  184. influence of the Holy Spirit.

  185. But if you're not careful, you can grieve

  186. the Holy Spirit and even

  187. quench the Holy Spirit.

  188. And my prayer today for Grace Summit

  189. Church is that we don't

  190. quench the Holy Spirit of God.

  191. We need more than technology.

  192. We need more than just more screens and

  193. more ways and approaches and gimmicks and

  194. ways to try to reach people.

  195. We need the power of the

  196. Holy Spirit in our life.

  197. And I pray that you get up under the

  198. influence of the Holy Spirit today,

  199. so much so that we have to call you an

  200. Uber when church lets out,

  201. because you're not supposed to be driving

  202. when you're that intoxicated.

  203. In fact, at this setting,

  204. they thought they were drunk.

  205. They saw them speaking in tongues and

  206. over 15 languages were

  207. discerned by bystanders.

  208. It was a miracle.

  209. And this once shy little crowd that had

  210. been in the upper room

  211. praying spilled on it in the street,

  212. 120 of them, about the amount of people

  213. we have in this building,

  214. spilled out into the street and turned

  215. the world upside down.

  216. At the end of Peter's message, 3,000

  217. people joined the church.

  218. That's the difference between

  219. just going through the motions

  220. and having the power of

  221. the Holy Spirit in your life.

  222. That's the difference.

  223. That's what made Peter, who

  224. cowered at being interrogated,

  225. whether he was a follower of Christ or

  226. not, to being a powerful preacher.

  227. That's what'll take a drug addict and put

  228. him behind a pulpit.

  229. That's what'll take people and change

  230. them so radically that you'll

  231. barely even recognize yourself.

  232. That's the power of the Holy Spirit.

  233. And so it's poured out, and I want to

  234. talk to you about what that looks like

  235. to grieve the Holy Spirit

  236. or to quench the Holy Spirit

  237. lest you fall into a trap that many

  238. people have fallen into,

  239. because here's the thing.

  240. You can be used by God mightily.

  241. You can be under the influence of God.

  242. But if you're not careful, you can

  243. diminish that influence in your life,

  244. and you can slip back.

  245. You can be anointed in one season and

  246. then fade into this form of godliness

  247. by having no power.

  248. Are you with me so far?

  249. All right, just checking.

  250. So there's a few men,

  251. Peter's one of them,

  252. a couple other men I want to

  253. talk about to illustrate this,

  254. are in the Old Testament.

  255. And as I mentioned, the Holy Spirit is

  256. throughout the Bible.

  257. It wasn't just on the day of Pentecost.

  258. The Holy Spirit came

  259. on a man named Samson.

  260. Samson is known for his strength.

  261. But if you read his story,

  262. you realize that he was strong

  263. when the Spirit of God came upon him.

  264. That's when he was tearing down gates of

  265. city, gates and pulling down the doors.

  266. That's when he was killing

  267. lions with his bare hands.

  268. That's when he was whooping guys that he

  269. shouldn't have been able to whoop

  270. because of the power of

  271. the Holy Spirit on his life.

  272. He was under the influence

  273. of the Holy Spirit of God.

  274. But Samson had issues.

  275. And I believe a careful study of his life

  276. revealed his issues to be that of women.

  277. This strong man had an issue with women.

  278. Oh, how many men have been taken down.

  279. Ladies, I love you. It's not your fault.

  280. As Jimmy would say, you can't help it.

  281. You were born that way.

  282. But some men are just

  283. vulnerable to this particular attack.

  284. In fact, I would give you three things

  285. that all men need to be careful of,

  286. particularly those in ministry.

  287. The girls, the gold and the glory.

  288. Samson's issue was the girls.

  289. For instance, he saw a

  290. woman of the Philistines,

  291. which were the enemies of the Israelites.

  292. But he was attracted to her.

  293. And so this entitled man looked at his

  294. parents and said, "Get her for me."

  295. And they said, "Can't we get

  296. you somebody more suitable,

  297. somebody that has the same

  298. faith system and everything?"

  299. And this was Samson's reply.

  300. "She looks good to me."

  301. He didn't care about character.

  302. He didn't care about her faith.

  303. All he was attracted to is

  304. what he was attracted to,

  305. and he wanted it.

  306. And that girl got up inside of his head

  307. and made him do stupid things.

  308. Then there was another

  309. woman that we won't mention.

  310. She's nameless in the Bible,

  311. but there was another gal that

  312. he shacked up with one night.

  313. And then there was a third woman that we

  314. read about in a story

  315. whose name was Delilah.

  316. Delilah, too, got in his head

  317. and caused him to compromise.

  318. And she would plead with him and say,

  319. "You must hate me because you won't tell

  320. me the source of your great strength."

  321. And what she was trying to do is trap him

  322. so the Philistines could destroy him.

  323. And little by little, he began to

  324. compromise in his answers to her

  325. and get closer and closer to the real

  326. source of his strength,

  327. which was the Spirit of God, but which

  328. was also the fact that he was a Nazarite.

  329. He was covenanted to

  330. God in a very special way.

  331. The Nazarite vow is

  332. found in Numbers, chapter 6.

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  333. I believe every Christian

  334. should look at that and read it,

  335. because it was a voluntary vow that men

  336. and women could take

  337. just whenever you choose to

  338. for whatever set season of time.

  339. And it was meant to

  340. separate you from the rest.

  341. You know, even in the church, there are

  342. those that stand out as being

  343. just a little more

  344. committed, a little more covenanted,

  345. like just going to church on Sunday and

  346. singing a couple songs

  347. and going home isn't enough for them.

  348. They're radically pursuing Jesus.

  349. And all of us can make that choice.

  350. There are things in my

  351. life that I stay away from,

  352. that I abstain from

  353. voluntarily for no other reason

  354. and that it has no

  355. benefit to my spiritual life

  356. and it will not help me to use my life to

  357. proclaim the goodness of God.

  358. Those things are not

  359. sinful in and of themselves,

  360. but I have chosen to stay

  361. away from them by covenant.

  362. And so it was with Samson, but Samson

  363. started to feel a little too secure

  364. in the fact that he had whooped a bunch

  365. of people and ripped down gates

  366. and he had killed a lion and he started

  367. feeling like he was really something.

  368. And so he just began to let his guard

  369. down with this woman.

  370. She got all up in his head

  371. to where he got so tired of it

  372. that he disclosed the

  373. source of his strength.

  374. And so she calls the Philistines in to

  375. attack the great warrior.

  376. And Samson wakes up

  377. and says this to himself,

  378. "I will arise as at other times."

  379. And he didn't even know, the Bible says,

  380. that the Lord had departed from him.

  381. He didn't even know it.

  382. He had fought so many battles.

  383. This is the caution I'm

  384. giving the church today.

  385. Get under the influence

  386. and stay under the influence.

  387. And so Samson was reduced

  388. to a grinder in the prison.

  389. And they poked out his eyes

  390. and tied him to a millstone

  391. and he was a grinder in the prison

  392. because of compromise

  393. and because of not staying under the

  394. influence of the spirit

  395. that had made him so

  396. strong in the first place.

  397. But here's the good news.

  398. God is a God of redemption.

  399. And how many of you are glad

  400. he's a God of second chances

  401. and fiftieth chances and eight hundred

  402. and ninety thousandth chances?

  403. And so we see Samson there blinded and

  404. going in circles around this millstone

  405. and they were mocking him and they tied

  406. him up for sport to

  407. these great big pillars.

  408. But the Bible has this one little verse

  409. that it's easy to overlook

  410. because what had happened is, you know,

  411. the hair that Samson had

  412. was part of the covenant sign.

  413. And when they discovered

  414. that, they cut his hair all off.

  415. But the Bible says that his

  416. hair began to grow back again.

  417. And so there, when they

  418. chained him to those pillars,

  419. he cried out and said,

  420. "Lord, one more time."

  421. He humbled himself after his fall.

  422. And the Bible says that he took out more

  423. of his enemies in his death

  424. that day than he had his entire life.

  425. What a God we serve.

  426. But I would caution us to not end up

  427. grinding in the prison

  428. and to be reduced and

  429. humbled to that place

  430. that we can stay under the influence

  431. before that happens.

  432. Are you with me so far?

  433. There's another man that I'd like you to

  434. consider and that is Saul.

  435. Saul was the first king of Israel.

  436. Saul started with a measure of humility.

  437. When they came to anoint him, he was

  438. hiding among the equipment.

  439. He had this timidness about him.

  440. But here's a verse you

  441. ought to mark down and know.

  442. I love this verse.

  443. 1 Samuel 10, verse 6 says that

    1 Samuel 10:6

  444. the Spirit will come upon you

  445. and you will prophesy and

  446. be turned into another man.

  447. The Spirit of God can change you.

  448. I've got to tell you, the only reason I'm

  449. standing up here today

  450. is because the Holy Spirit hit my life.

  451. There is no way I would be standing

  452. addressing any crowds of people

  453. if it weren't for the Holy

  454. Spirit that got a hold of me.

  455. I'm under the influence.

  456. In fact, I'm going to

  457. need a ride home today.

  458. Walk.

  459. That's so close.

  460. That's true.

  461. But you can be changed into a

  462. completely different person.

  463. That's exciting.

  464. And that's a lot of times when we talk

  465. about the Holy Spirit,

  466. what we focus on.

  467. The outpouring.

  468. Peter said, "This is that which was

  469. spoken of by the prophet Joel."

  470. "Then I will pour out

  471. my spirit on all flesh."

  472. "On men and on women and on servants."

  473. "Young men will see visions.

  474. Old men will dream dreams

  475. because they're taking naps."

  476. I added that part.

  477. But the Spirit would be poured out and

  478. Peter said, "This is that.

  479. That's what you're seeing.

  480. And it can change you.

  481. And it had changed Saul."

  482. But where I mentioned three things,

  483. the girls, the gold, and the glory, where

  484. these are dangers and threats to men,

  485. the first, Samson fell prey

  486. to you, which is the girls,

  487. I would submit to you that the gold and

  488. the glory are the two that got Saul.

  489. In fact, if you look at any minister

  490. who's ever fallen in

  491. the Bible or in our world,

  492. they fell into one of those three things.

  493. The girls, the gold, and the glory.

  494. Saul became king.

  495. The Spirit came upon him.

  496. He moved into the palace.

  497. He was used by God.

  498. He was leading.

  499. And he began to disobey the direct

  500. instructions of the Lord.

  501. First in 1 Samuel chapter 13, where he

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  502. gave an unlawful sacrifice.

  503. Second in chapter 15, also in 1 Samuel,

  504. where he spared the Amalekites when he

  505. was supposed to destroy all of them.

  506. And so God rejected him at that point.

  507. And the Bible says that the Spirit was

  508. taken away from Saul.

  509. That's a scary verse.

  510. Now, in Saul's case, he chose to stay

  511. seated as king as

  512. though everything was okay.

  513. He knew the Spirit of God was gone

  514. because a troubling

  515. Spirit came over him instead.

  516. So he's now left with

  517. this position, but no power.

  518. We, fellow Christians, can have a form of

  519. godliness and have no power.

  520. I'm not interested in

  521. that kind of Christianity.

  522. And if the title, if the position ever

  523. becomes more important than the presence

  524. of God, it's time to hang it up.

  525. I've told God many times, I will walk

  526. away from the pulpit

  527. at a moment's notice.

  528. I would rather have you than any position

  529. or any church or any amount of money

  530. because nothing compares with him.

  531. And I feel like David when he repented in

  532. Psalm 51 and said, "Don't cast me away

  533. from your presence and take

  534. not your Holy Spirit from me."

  535. Saul was troubled and he didn't have the

  536. Holy Spirit. He wasn't

  537. under the influence anymore.

  538. Now, here's where it gets interesting.

  539. He sends for a man that God was raising,

  540. a boy that God was

  541. raising up named David.

  542. The Spirit of God departed

  543. from Saul and landed on David.

  544. And David could play some music.

  545. I wish I could play me

  546. something. I can't play nothing.

  547. I can turn it on on Apple Music or

  548. something. That's about as all I can do.

  549. But David could play music and the Spirit

  550. was in it and so it

  551. soothed people, including Saul.

  552. So Saul began to send for David, "Bring

  553. that kid here, let him play."

  554. It's the equivalent of somebody in the

  555. church who the Spirit of God has

  556. withdrawn from because of disobedience.

  557. But you still love to come to church

  558. because you sense the Holy Spirit.

  559. You get a contact buzz when you're around

  560. other people that are

  561. under the influence.

  562. But you yourself are not under the

  563. influence. Are we having fun yet?

  564. Yes.

  565. And so Saul is like, "Play us the songs

  566. of Zion. Play us that

  567. worship music. It soothes me.

  568. It feels good when you play music. It

  569. feels good when people are worshipping."

  570. But then you leave and before you get to

  571. the car, you realize the reality is you

  572. have grieved or quenched the

  573. Holy Spirit in your own life.

  574. And so these two men, one repented there

  575. at the mill and God used him again and

  576. his hair grew back and the other man,

  577. Saul, would never recover.

  578. Peter is another one who did recover

  579. because if you remember, he had denied

  580. even knew the Lord just a little while

  581. earlier, but Jesus restored him.

  582. And Peter was obedient and

  583. that's what it comes down to.

  584. When it comes down to staying under the

  585. influence, you have to be obedient.

  586. The less you obey,

  587. the less you will hear.

  588. Hear me. The less you obey, those little

  589. promptings, what the old folks used to

  590. call a check in the Spirit.

  591. Now I have to explain that terminology

  592. now because nobody knows what checks are.

  593. But the old folks would talk about a

  594. check. I just, "Eh, it

  595. just doesn't set right."

  596. And that can happen in so many scenarios.

  597. Don't send that text.

  598. Here you typed it all out and you had

  599. your little vent and I'm going to tell

  600. you, you tell me, I'll tell you back.

  601. And you go to push the send button and

  602. the Spirit says, "Don't do

  603. that. Those are the moments."

  604. I shared a message a couple of weeks ago

  605. called "The Strong Silent Type" and it

  606. was based out of Isaiah 30, that in

  607. quietness and

  608. confidence would be our strength.

  609. And a little while later in that chapter,

  610. that was verse 15, verse 21, we have a

  611. picture of how the Holy Spirit helps us

  612. in those situations

  613. and it's put like this.

  614. You will hear a voice behind

  615. you saying, "This is the way."

  616. Walk in it whenever you turn to the right

  617. or to the left. It's

  618. that still small voice.

  619. And if you dismiss that voice as just,

  620. that's just my own head.

  621. You will miss the ability to stay up

  622. under the influence because the Holy

  623. Spirit is grieved and He will withdraw.

  624. Just the other day I was driving and I

  625. heard a voice behind me say, "You're just

  626. Speedy Gonzales today, aren't you?"

  627. "Oh wait, that was you sitting

  628. behind me on the motorcycle."

  629. I get that confused sometimes. But that

  630. does make a good

  631. point. God can use people.

  632. Because when she said that, I knew

  633. instantly I'm going too fast, I've been

  634. going too fast, and I said, "Yes, ma'am,"

  635. and I throttled it down.

  636. Way too fast. I don't know if I've ever

  637. told you this, but one time many years

  638. ago, back in the minivan

  639. days, when our son was little,

  640. I was riding that minivan, and we were on

  641. a back road, and it was

  642. just myself and my son.

  643. He was three, four, I don't know, five.

  644. But we're booking it, man. I'm pushing

  645. that minivan to the limit.

  646. And my son, my little boy,

  647. says, "Daddy, is this a freeway?"

  648. [laughter]

  649. See, the Holy Spirit can speak through

  650. people. And if I dismiss that, and I

  651. ignore that, I become dead

  652. into what He's trying to tell me.

  653. The more you obey, the more you hear. The

  654. less you obey, the less

  655. you're even going to hear Him.

  656. [silence]

  657. So let's go back where we started.

  658. So Peter preaches under the power of the

  659. Holy Spirit, and it impacts people.

  660. They're cut to the heart.

  661. And they said, "What do we do?"

  662. [silence]

  663. What do we do? There's three R's in verse

  664. 18 that I would suggest are...or verse

  665. 38, I'm sorry, that Peter answered with.

  666. Three R's, so it'll be easy to remember.

  667. Repent, remission, and receive.

  668. Repentance is a way of

  669. life. It's not a one-time thing.

  670. All of us have a tendency

  671. to slip back in some things.

  672. Remove halos now and acknowledge what I'm

  673. telling you is the truth.

  674. We don't walk around in this spiritual

  675. cloud and never have attitudes and never

  676. post things we shouldn't post and never

  677. say things we shouldn't say and never

  678. drive like we shouldn't drive, right?

  679. And when we do fall into those things,

  680. and the Spirit...listen, the Spirit is a

  681. helper. He's a guide. He's a teacher.

  682. And so you want Him in your life, because

  683. if you're struggling, He will guide you

  684. right out of that mess through obedience.

  685. And so, He says, "Repent." Peter had had

  686. to do that before because of his denial

  687. and just choose to be obedient.

  688. And when you repent, God is so good that

  689. through Jesus is the remission of sins,

  690. completely wipes the record clean.

  691. And if we confess our sins, He is

  692. faithful and just to forgive us our sins

  693. and to cleanse us

  694. from all unrighteousness.

  695. That's an awesome truth.

  696. Remission is available. And once you do

  697. that, once you say, "I'm not going to

  698. disobey you anymore. I'm not going to

  699. resist you anymore."

  700. And you receive remission, you are now in

  701. a position to receive more of the Holy

  702. Spirit, to be under the influence again.

  703. It's a very delicate relationship. I

  704. remember going to one church and having

  705. words with somebody right before we

  706. walked in the building.

  707. Doesn't the devil try to get you like

  708. that? Like even the drive to church was

  709. fine. And in between the car and the

  710. door, something happens.

  711. And the flesh rises up and the Spirit's

  712. like, "I'm out of here."

  713. And I had that happen in a

  714. church that I had to preach in.

  715. And I came in and tried to just muscle

  716. through it. You know how we do.

  717. And tell ourselves all the reasons we're

  718. right and they're wrong. And God, you

  719. need to convict them.

  720. You need to deal with them.

  721. And then God's like,

  722. "No, it's you, buddy."

  723. And I remember right there in the middle

  724. of the service walking over and looking

  725. the person in the eye

  726. and saying, "I'm so sorry."

  727. And it right then and there lifted that

  728. heavy Spirit off of me and I got up and

  729. preached under the

  730. influence of the Holy Spirit.

  731. It's a delicate thing.

  732. And so Peter tells them, "Repent,

  733. remission, receive."

  734. Now, one more kind of point on obedience

  735. because that's really what it comes down

  736. to as the worship team comes back.

  737. The whole reason we're reading this

  738. today, the whole reason it played out

  739. that way is because of obedience.

  740. Because Jesus, when He ascended, said,

  741. "Wait in the city of Jerusalem until

  742. you'll be endued with power."

  743. And they did that.

  744. Because they obeyed and stayed in a

  745. prayer meeting for 10 days not knowing

  746. what was going to happen.

  747. That's why God could pour out on them.

  748. That's why 3,000 people could be added to

  749. the church that day.

  750. Just a little while later, 5,000, just a

  751. little while later, they

  752. just started saying a multitude.

  753. The church just exploded because

  754. obedience led to being under the

  755. influence, which led to effectiveness.

  756. So maybe the Holy Spirit's

  757. been dealing with you on things.

  758. Repent, receive

  759. remission, receive the Holy Spirit.

  760. Get up under the influence of the Holy

  761. Spirit and stay there.

  762. Maybe it's as simple as while we worship,

  763. like you're timid

  764. about raising your hands.

  765. Because you look around

  766. first, "What's everybody doing?"

  767. "Nope, I'm not going to do it."

  768. But there's a little

  769. prompting to do that.

  770. And what God is doing through the Holy

  771. Spirit is saying, "Worship me, abandon

  772. your reputation and

  773. just worship me freely."

  774. But you tighten up

  775. because nobody else is doing it.

  776. And maybe something as simple as that.

  777. It may be like when we have prayer times

  778. at the altar and you're prompted, like

  779. you're feeling like, "Man, I want to go,

  780. but nobody else is going.

  781. Let me just wait and see

  782. if anyone else goes first."

  783. Don't we do that.

  784. Those little things can

  785. grieve the Spirit of God.

  786. I've got to tell you, the times that I've

  787. gotten out of my seat because I felt

  788. prompted and just did it,

  789. just did it without even

  790. really thinking about it.

  791. You get the miracle

  792. before you even get up there.

  793. Like there's something so liberating and

  794. empowering to obeying that little

  795. prompting of the Holy

  796. Spirit and just making a move.

  797. And I don't care who

  798. says what, who thinks what.

  799. I don't care if

  800. nobody else goes up there.

  801. It don't make me no difference.

  802. Give me a box of Kleenex

  803. and I'll snot up there.

  804. It don't make me no, because I want to

  805. obey the Holy Spirit.

  806. And there's a beautiful outpouring, like

  807. a little personal outpouring.

  808. Every time you obey, every time you

  809. listen to the promptings, every time you

  810. don't send the text,

  811. every time you apologize,

  812. every time you do what the Holy Spirit is

  813. calling you to do, you get up under the

  814. influence of the Holy Spirit.

  815. And if you're like me, you need that.

  816. You need the helper.

  817. Someone said you need the

  818. Holy Spirit to go to Walmart.

  819. You need, you need some help.

  820. In this world, you need to know what to

  821. say, what not to say, who to hang out

  822. with, who to stay away from.

  823. All of those things are the things that

  824. the teacher, the guide will lead you in.

  825. Father,

  826. Intoxicate us with

  827. the Holy Spirit of God.

  828. May we be under the influence in a

  829. radical way and may we be sensitive to

  830. the moment by moment situations and

  831. decisions that we make,

  832. that we don't lose connection with the

  833. Holy Spirit, but help us

  834. to walk in unity with Him.

  835. Lord, because we want more.

  836. We want more and we're not going to

  837. settle for anything less.

  838. Forgive us for our disobedience and we

  839. commit in this moment to

  840. obey you moving forward.

  841. Speak, Lord, for your servant is

  842. listening in Jesus name.

  843. Would you stand with me today?

  844. They're going to lead us in some worship

  845. and our prayer team

  846. is going to be up here.

  847. And if you want prayer for anything,

  848. they're going to be up

  849. here to agree with you.

  850. Let's just spend some time reflecting and

  851. asking God to move in our, in our

  852. situations in our lives.

  853. Thank you for listening to today's

  854. message from Grace Summit Church.
