  1. happy New Year folks it is great to see

  2. you and to be here with you all this

  3. morning I am so grateful that we could

  4. be gathered together in this house and I

  5. am grateful because we are beginning a

  6. brand new collection of conversations

  7. that we are kicking off this new year

  8. with that we are calling the Renaissance

  9. now the Renaissance is me being a little

  10. bit a little bit artsy here but let me

  11. just explain a couple things behind it

  12. the Renaissance uh is really a

  13. collection and it is a discussion that

  14. is describing and detailing it is

  15. fixated and focused on the idea of

  16. Revival and renewal and revitalization

  17. in a people does that sound good and so

  18. the Renaissance is obviously uh

  19. something that I've kind of stolen from

  20. a famed period of time in human history

  21. I think all of us are probably to some

  22. degree aware that uh the Renaissance was

  23. a period of time in human history where

  24. there was a lot

  25. Revival and renewal this revitalization

  26. of art and literature that ended up

  27. influencing culture predominantly in

  28. areas of Europe and it was something

  29. where we saw that it spanned quite a bit

  30. of time from the 14th to the 16th

  31. centuries depending on which art majors

  32. uh that are unemployed are talking about

  33. it and so uh you see that there's a lot

  34. of different things that are going on

  35. I'm joking if you if you're an art major

  36. we're not hiring and so I just want you

  37. to know uh we're grateful you're here

  38. but uh what we know is that the reality

  39. is that it it spanned this period of

  40. time where we saw that there was a lot

  41. of different things that were taking

  42. place but namely there were these

  43. artists and there were these works of

  44. art that were coming out of this time

  45. that were like kind of crazy that are

  46. still loved and beloved and celebrated

  47. to this day and so it was during that

  48. period of time where you saw an artist

  49. stepping onto the scene like Caravaggio

  50. and Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo

  51. and Donatello and the rest of the

  52. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and uh it's

  53. it's where you saw that there were works

  54. of art that were uh showing up many of

  55. which some of you have probably seen at

  56. some point or another in your life that

  57. are just captivating to not only the

  58. mind but the heart you're just like what

  59. is this doing to me when you see things

  60. like the statue of David and the cinee

  61. chapel and the creation of Adam and the

  62. Mona Lisa or the painting of The Last

  63. Supper there are these incredible things

  64. that came out of that time frame uh but

  65. we saw that it was not only that there

  66. were crazy things like these incredible

  67. works of art and literature that were

  68. shaping culture but even uh things like

  69. theorizing and philosophizing if you

  70. will that you would see people like

  71. Renee Dart and you would see uh people

  72. like Galileo and makavelli and even the

  73. fame Bible translators like Tindale that

  74. were stepping onto the scene where there

  75. was so much enthusiasm that was shaping

  76. a people in a radical way through these

  77. different things that were happening in

  78. their city and in their culture but uh

  79. while all of that's great I I really

  80. want to kind of distill this idea down

  81. not to just just the time frame but the

  82. word renaissance renaissance literally

  83. is defined as Revival or renewed

  84. interest in something and the something

  85. leaves a whole lot of creative Liberty

  86. and for me I believe it's what he wants

  87. to do in and through this people in 2025

  88. in us as a church and so what's

  89. beautiful even if you look at the

  90. Renaissance period of history is that

  91. while there was a lot of transformation

  92. that was happening in art and liter and

  93. culture uh it it didn't just stick to

  94. those particular things and not even

  95. just theorizing and philosophizing but

  96. rather what you would see is that the

  97. Renaissance was a period of time where

  98. there was a whole lot of Revival and

  99. renewed interest in religion and

  100. religious reform that you would see at

  101. that particular time there was Revival

  102. and renewed interest in the church you

  103. see Martin Luther and the boys were

  104. starting the Reformation right like

  105. everybody was excited about what we now

  106. know to be protestantism and so there

  107. was all of this craziness going on that

  108. ended being a beautiful work of art that

  109. God was doing in the tapestry in the

  110. fabric of people in human history and so

  111. the beautiful thing that we see is that

  112. it wasn't just it was that it was a

  113. change in the ideation of of people it

  114. wasn't just like these are cool ideas we

  115. should give it a shot but rather there

  116. was an identification shift in a people

  117. and so we believe that's where the Lord

  118. is taking us going into this year and

  119. Beyond and we're excited about it and we

  120. believe you're going to be uh excited

  121. about it too if I don't drop my Bible

  122. here uh in Matthew chapter 16 Matthew

Matthew 16 chapter mention Matthew 16 chapter mention

  123. chapter 16 we're going to be in verses

  124. 13 through 20 are you all excited for

  125. the new year are we excited that God is

  126. alive and active uh that his word is

  127. what we are about uh there are people

  128. that are in here that are neish uh

  129. newish folks we love you we are grateful

  130. for you it is important to me that you

  131. hear this we are a Bible believing

  132. Church uh we are a people that are going

  133. to go through the scriptures a verse at

  134. a time exegetically to the absolute best

  135. of our ability every single week we

  136. believe that this is what we need to

  137. hear from the word of God that God has

  138. given to us we're not here to listen to

  139. humans do their best to sound very nice

  140. and sweet but rather we want to hear the

  141. difficult and the encouraging truths

  142. that God offers in his word and so

  143. that's where we're going to be today in

  144. Matthew Chapter 16: 13 yall ready for

  145. the word

  146. it says this when Jesus came to the

  147. region of cesaria Philippi he asked his

  148. disciples who do people say that the son

  149. of man is they replied ah you know some

  150. some say John the Baptist some Elijah so

  151. Jeremiah one of the

  152. prophets but you he asked them who do

  153. you say that I am Simon Peter answered

  154. uh you're the Messiah you're the son of

  155. the Living God Jesus responded blessed

  156. are you Simon son of Jonah because Flesh

  157. and Blood did not reveal the this to you

  158. but my Father in heaven and I also say

  159. to you that you are Peter and on this

  160. rock I will build my church and the

  161. gates of Hades will not overpower it I

  162. will give you the keys to the kingdom of

  163. heaven whatever you bind on Earth will

  164. have been bound in heaven and whatever

  165. you loose on Earth will have been loosed

  166. in heaven then he gave the disciples

  167. orders to tell no one that he was the

  168. Messiah will you pray with

  169. me uh Lord I'm grateful for every single

  170. human that is in this place right now uh

  171. and that is also tuning in online Lord I

  172. ask that you would um Captivate Us with

  173. the idea of

  174. new that that while there's not a whole

  175. lot of difference between December 31

  176. and January 1 U at the same time there

  177. is it's a turning of the calendar it's

  178. it's it's a flipping of the page Lord

  179. things that that are meaningful to you

  180. and we see it in your word and so Lord

  181. would we be captivated by the idea of uh

  182. new wine skins of you doing a new thing

  183. of you giving us a fresh start and maybe

  184. even today just a fresh encounter Lord

  185. that we would start this year in a way

  186. to where hearts are lit Ablaze with the

  187. glory of who you are and that we would

  188. feel the weight of that in this place

  189. but also have a thrill and excitement

  190. about us as we follow you wherever you

  191. might call

  192. us Jesus we love you we praise you and

  193. we thank you ask these things in your

  194. name

  195. amen uh well I'm sure everybody in here

  196. remembers the historic and the meteoric

  197. rise of the famed band The Cory men

  198. right uh you know Len Gary John low Ron

  199. Rod Davis

  200. uh okay um the guys that named their

  201. band they named their band after Cory

  202. Bank High School that'll be the day in

  203. spite of all danger okay okay I thought

  204. we'd have more Cory Bank this is this is

  205. interesting uh this is a problem I

  206. really don't know where to go from here

  207. um okay

  208. um does anyone have another illustration

  209. for this thing uh okay uh fine anybody

  210. know the

  211. Beatles oh okay there we go The Beatles

  212. you know uh little guys like Paul

  213. McCartney and George Harrison Ringo Star

  214. John Lennon that sound familiar uh that

  215. Nam their band not after the insect the

  216. beetle but the actually a play on words

  217. b e a t not b t l e right they had um

  218. albums that um evil secular people

  219. listen to but I of course don't you know

  220. things like Sergeant Pepper Lonely

  221. Hearts Club Band and Abby Road and

  222. Rubber Soul and revolver and other

  223. things that I've never listened to I can

  224. just name them very quickly off the top

  225. of my head and so things that you people

  226. listen to uh you you're familiar with

  227. this right uh I figured we might have a

  228. few more people that were a little bit

  229. more familiar with a band that is often

  230. described as being the greatest band of

  231. all time and so uh it's interesting

  232. anybody in here that is a real did

  233. anyone know who the Cory men were just

  234. out of curiosity did anybody know all

  235. right thank you for not giving it up I

  236. would have had to kick you out uh so uh

  237. what we

  238. know what we know is that any real

  239. Beatles fan is aware of the fact that

  240. July the 6th 1957 was the day when Paul

  241. met John which I thought was interesting

  242. by the way if you Google when Paul met

  243. John it's not going to bring up like you

  244. know the gospels it's going to bring up

  245. the Beatles And so uh our world has gone

  246. astray folks and so what you need to

  247. know is that July the 6th 1957 is the

  248. day that Paul met John that we see Paul

  249. McCartney on that day was accompanying a

  250. friend of his named Ivan vau to St

  251. Peter's Church in Liverpool specifically

  252. in Walton and as Paul McCartney was

  253. following his friend Ivan vaugh to St

  254. Peters the idea is that they wanted to

  255. go and listen to his friends band The

  256. Corey men that were being being led by

  257. some unknown guy named John

  258. Lenin and on that day Paul met John and

  259. a couple of weeks later John was like

  260. that is a gifted guy I think he should

  261. join our band and so he invited him to

  262. join the band and when Paul ended up

  263. joining the band nothing stayed the same

  264. when Paul joined the band other people

  265. didn't like that Paul joined the band

  266. because Paul was letting everybody know

  267. hey this is cute what you guys are doing

  268. but you should take this way more

  269. serious

  270. he let them know hey my father actually

  271. was a musician made a career out of this

  272. like you too can be an individual that

  273. is a part of something that's not just

  274. kind of like a cute hobby we could be I

  275. don't know the greatest band of all time

  276. and so he decided in that moment to make

  277. sure that they had an awareness about

  278. them but also that they would go into

  279. the things that they were doing with a

  280. lot more structure and a lot more

  281. preparation to the point where he was

  282. even getting on to people about their

  283. clothing uh it was funny there was one

  284. former band member like can you imagine

  285. being a former band member who missed

  286. out on the Beatles there was a former

  287. band member who the Lord still loves

  288. that said this he said this guy had us

  289. going from checked shirts to Smart white

  290. jackets and bootlace ties and three

  291. years later we see that their identity

  292. started to shift in a major way in 1958

  293. they played about five different sets

  294. together as the Corey men and during

  295. that time George Harrison joined the

  296. band big deal and then we saw from that

  297. point in 1959 they played even fewer

  298. sets they they played a couple of

  299. different sets at Liverpool's Caspa

  300. coffee Club but outside of that it

  301. started to fizzle and Fade to where

  302. there were only three guys left Paul

  303. McCartney George Harrison John lennin

  304. and they became the Beatles in

  305. 1960 and I'm saying that to you because

  306. I think there's something substantial in

  307. a name

  308. change the Corey men ended up being an

  309. absolutely pivotal Foundation peace to

  310. what the Beatles would build on it was a

  311. great opening chapter but there was more

  312. to come a greater chapter that would

  313. happen as the Cory men ended up becoming

  314. the Beatles and that's significant to us

  315. here today because the reality is God is

  316. in the business of changing names and he

  317. doesn't do so flippantly but there's

  318. deep meaning and purpose a deep

  319. identification that happens with an

  320. individual when we see that take place

  321. in the scriptures and we see it happen

  322. often with Abram to Abraham Sarai to

  323. Sarah with Jacob to Israel and I could

  324. go on and on and on with others that

  325. would be significant and less

  326. significant but I think the most

  327. significant one that we probably end up

  328. seeing taken place in scripture is when

  329. Jesus will change Simon's name to Peter

  330. as we just read here and what we see is

  331. that it begins in verse 13 of Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  332. chapter 16 and it says when Jesus came

  333. to the region of cesaria Philippi he

  334. asked his disciples who do people say

  335. that the son of man is now Jesus had

  336. been spending a lot of his time home

  337. based in the region of Galilee and now

  338. they end up traversing 25 Mi North to

  339. the region of cesaria Philippi and

  340. that's critical because in Galilee it

  341. was a p uh primarily and predominantly

  342. Jewish region but now going 25 miles

  343. north to cesaria Philippi would have

  344. brought them to a much more Gentile

  345. heavy uh piece of territory and so what

  346. ended up happening is that Jesus is

  347. whisking his disciples away to have a

  348. pivotal conversation with them and as

  349. he's doing this he's bringing them North

  350. away from this territory where there's

  351. these increasing crowds and population

  352. that are all of a sudden having some

  353. opposition towards Jesus and those that

  354. are following him and so they move from

  355. that region that's a little bit closer

  356. to Jerusalem and they go to cesaria

  357. Philippi and Jesus is going to get them

  358. to a place where they have to answer a

  359. couple substantial questions that are

  360. going to change everything from this

  361. moment and so we see that Jesus begins

  362. with the first question and he says who

  363. do people say that the son of man is son

  364. of man is a moniker uh and it's it's a

  365. significant one son of man is

  366. encompassing a lot of different things

  367. it's Jesus Humanity his humility his

  368. deity and even fulfilled prophecy right

  369. and so we see that it's saying that this

  370. is the Eternal Son of God the second

  371. person of the godhead the Trinity we see

  372. that that this is God dwelling Among Us

  373. in the flesh this is who Daniel is

  374. prophesying about if you go all the way

  375. back to what it is that Daniel wrote in

  376. the Book of Daniel that you see that

  377. this has been just forever in the making

  378. that we see that the Messiah is here but

  379. Jesus wanted to know who is it that

  380. people are saying he is and so Jesus is

  381. saying who do people say that the son of

  382. man is and that's not something that the

  383. disciples would have been like who's he

  384. talking about like he's referred to

  385. himself as the son of man multiple times

  386. and so Jesus is kicking off this first

  387. question in order to get them to a

  388. deeper much more personal one and so we

  389. see in Matthew 16: 13 and 14 it says

  390. when Jesus came to the region of cesaria

  391. Philippi he asked his disciples who do

  392. people say that the son of man is and

  393. they replied some say John the Baptist

  394. others Elijah and still Jeremiah one of

  395. the prophets now Jesus is being confused

  396. with a lot of different people right and

  397. the important thing to recognize is that

  398. Jesus is making enough noise where he is

  399. to where there's a lot of speculation

  400. about who is this guy and even Herod

  401. Antipas who carried out the order to

  402. have John the Baptist killed beheaded

  403. put his head on a plate is wondering is

  404. this John the Baptist like

  405. resurrected like like can I just not get

  406. rid of this guy and then others were

  407. like no no no there there are people

  408. that are saying that he's he's Elijah or

  409. a form of Elijah and they were

  410. associating Jesus with the ministry of

  411. Elijah because they both had a lot of

  412. Miracles and so people were like he he

  413. must be a type he must be a resurrected

  414. form of him and then others were like no

  415. no no it's it's Jeremiah because he's

  416. preaching with this power and authority

  417. and yet at the same time he he's like

  418. mingling it with stuff that we don't

  419. like like like suffering and servitude

  420. and all these other things that are

  421. garbage and so people didn't know who he

  422. was and I just love the idea of Jesus

  423. taking like all of these 20-year-old

  424. guys away from everything that they know

  425. they're bringing him 25 miles north and

  426. then he sits them down in this region

  427. and he's like all right who do people

  428. say that I am and they're just like ah

  429. do we tell him like you know I mean like

  430. he's like what is Jerusalem TMZ saying

  431. about me what are they perpetuating out

  432. there what's the word on the street

  433. y'all and they're like I don't know like

  434. this that like John the Baptist Eli do

  435. we Elijah saying all sorts of stuff and

  436. and and Jesus is like that's that's

  437. great that's great I I asked you this to

  438. ask you a deeper

  439. question who do you say that I am

  440. and and Jesus isn't

  441. asking this question

  442. because he's got like this ignorance

  443. about himself right he's he's not asking

  444. because he's looking for a flattering

  445. remark you ever been talking to someone

  446. it's like they're begging you to

  447. compliment them and you're like I

  448. actually want to say terrible things

  449. about you because I'm so sick of this

  450. they're just like I just feel so ugly I

  451. don't know what it is man am I fat like

  452. what's going on she's like no yeah you

  453. are you are stop saying that please stop

  454. he's not doing that he's not trying to

  455. bait them into some kind of compliment

  456. or anything like that but he's not

  457. unsure or insecure but rather they have

  458. reached a critical juncture in the

  459. ministry and the life of Jesus at this

  460. point and he's going to eliminate any

  461. and all existing confusion about his

  462. identity who he is and what he's come to

  463. do and so he says hey who do people say

  464. that I am and then he asks the question

  465. who do you say that I am and it's

  466. important because Jesus Jesus knows that

  467. many of the disciples were aware of who

  468. he is and if they weren't vocal about it

  469. they did understand on some level this

  470. is the Messiah we know that and yet at

  471. the same time there were some differing

  472. opinions and ideas about who the Messiah

  473. would be and there was something that

  474. had happened among the Jewish people

  475. where a traditional thought of who the

  476. Messiah should be took over what the

  477. scriptures actually say the Messiah will

  478. be and so what ended up happening is

  479. that there were a lot of people that

  480. believed that the Messiah was going to

  481. be a political leader that was going to

  482. live them from the hands of Oppression

  483. out from underneath the oppression that

  484. Rome had been inflicting upon the Jewish

  485. people and that the Messiah was going to

  486. rule and Reign Over them as a sovereign

  487. state as they entered into this

  488. flourishing and this Prosperity but what

  489. we see here is that the scriptures don't

  490. testify to that and rather there was

  491. going to be suffering involved with the

  492. Messiah Jesus wants to ask the questions

  493. to make sure that he can get a good

  494. measure of their faith but he's also

  495. going to start to muster their strength

  496. because this isn't a game anymore

  497. this this this isn't fun anymore like

  498. initially it's like you want to come and

  499. follow me you want to see a blind guy

  500. see you want to see the de like and

  501. they're just like this is fun like all

  502. of the words and the works that Jesus

  503. has done to this point have revealed

  504. that he's the

  505. Messiah and

  506. now it's that his death burial and

  507. Resurrection are going to verify that

  508. he's the Messiah but you've got to get

  509. to a point where you believe that or

  510. what's about to happen is going to break

  511. you do you have any idea who I am and so

  512. what we see Happening Here is that it

  513. would go on and we would see that Jesus

  514. is saying who do you say that I am and

  515. I'm bringing this up at naum and I'm

  516. going to continue to bring it up because

  517. you got to understand that question when

  518. Jesus says who do you say that I am he's

  519. not just asking them he's asking

  520. you who do you say that he

  521. is who do you say

  522. that Jesus is because not to be

  523. dramatic but your answer to that

  524. question is the hinge upon which your

  525. Eternal Destiny

  526. swings everyone thinks I'm

  527. significant Jesus saying everyone thinks

  528. that I'm like more than just a normal

  529. guy people are saying all sorts of

  530. things do you hear all the things do you

  531. hear what everyone's saying get it out

  532. get it out good is that all you think I

  533. am or do you think think that there's

  534. something more do you have a differing

  535. inkling from what the crowds and the

  536. people are

  537. saying because Jesus Christ is not just

  538. a historical figure to be studied he's

  539. the son of the Living God to be

  540. worshiped not just a kind guy to be

  541. complimented but the Christ the son of

  542. the Living God and we see that it's

  543. Peter that is going to make sure that

  544. everybody hears that that's exactly who

  545. he is look it's interesting it says here

  546. Simon Peter answered you're the Messiah

  547. you're the son of the living Living God

  548. and Jesus said blessed are you Simon son

  549. of Jonah Flesh and Blood didn't reveal

  550. this to you but my Father in Heaven

  551. Jesus will ask them a question and then

  552. Peter per the norm is kind of the

  553. spokesperson for the group which I

  554. always just find funny because he's the

  555. loosest cannon and angriest craziest guy

  556. there is which gives me so much

  557. hope you know why would you choose me

  558. because I'm going to put people around

  559. you that can go stop it

  560. Peter's the spokesperson for the group

  561. and he's specific

  562. right he says you're the Christ you're

  563. the Messiah you're the son of the Living

  564. God I'm I'm I'm interchanging Christ and

  565. Messiah because your scriptures might

  566. translate it you're the Christ son of

  567. the Living God Christ is just the Greek

  568. equivalent of the Hebrew Messiah and

  569. then he says son of the Living God

  570. significant because Jews would often

  571. refer to God in a very specific way he's

  572. the Living God which is to say he's he

  573. he he's not in the lineage of your dead

  574. Idols that you

  575. worship he he he he he's he's not all of

  576. your little G Gods he's Lord of creation

  577. all things living breathing watching

  578. over us here that he's with us in this

  579. moment he he he's not your

  580. 401k he he he's he's not the things that

  581. you put your hope in he he's not the

  582. things that are are should like

  583. competing for your worship he is the

  584. ultimate person upon which you should

  585. trust above all is the Living

  586. God and Jesus Will Reveal how this was

  587. revealed to Simon calls him

  588. blessed and I think it's significant to

  589. understand that when Jesus calls him

  590. blessed he calls him blessed and that's

  591. something that you see in the old and

  592. the New Testament is just being favor

  593. and recognition from God in a moment

  594. about what's just taking place whether

  595. it's battling through suffering or

  596. whether it's just bestowing blessing

  597. upon an individual that you can be

  598. blessed under a myriad of circumstances

  599. and we see that that happens in the

  600. scriptures but the other thing that we

  601. need to understand is that uh it's not

  602. like some special blessing and

  603. benediction is given to Peter that

  604. nobody else ever receives but rather we

  605. see that this is something that Jesus is

  606. going to make commentary about his

  607. confession and yet at the same time the

  608. the blessing doesn't extend to something

  609. that is a lot more special for peter

  610. than it would be for anybody else

  611. we see here that Jesus said Simon son of

  612. son of Jonah uh which is just anytime a

  613. full name is used you know that

  614. something significant is about to happen

  615. afterwards right like if you remember

  616. growing up if your mom said your full

  617. name my my

  618. word if my dad said my full

  619. name you might not see tomorrow right

  620. you know like it's just if someone hey

  621. hey Lucas John was on what what right

  622. like all of a sudden something serious

  623. is about to go down and so we see here

  624. Jesus saying listen up listen up Flesh

  625. and Blood didn't reveal this to you my

  626. Father in Heaven hey it's God Who

  627. removed the veil do you know that

  628. anything significant that you do in your

  629. life ultimately God gets the glory for

  630. it it it it can't be something that is

  631. attributed to you thank you for your

  632. faithful obedience but the Lord is the

  633. one who did this and he's the one who's

  634. going to get the credit and is going to

  635. get the glory and so Jesus is saying to

  636. him in this moment good job Peter but

  637. can I tell you you didn't come up with

  638. this by your own Brilliance and Faith

  639. but it is God in his kindness who

  640. allowed this to be revealed to you that

  641. we all might know says blessed are you

  642. Simon son of Jonah because Flesh and

  643. Blood didn't reveal this to you but my

  644. Father in heaven and I also say to you

  645. that you are Peter and on this rock I

  646. will build my church and the gates of

  647. Hades will not overpower it uh Jesus now

  648. does something really significant

  649. and I I don't think we should Brush by

  650. it right

  651. like he just changed his

  652. name I I see Austin here I just can't

  653. imagine if I were to be like Austin

  654. thanks for being here today you are now

  655. Rick Rick it's good to see you he'd be

  656. like whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa wh why am

  657. I rick because it means good hair like

  658. no I mean like what are we doing what

  659. are we

  660. doing why what's going on this is going

  661. to be a

  662. linguistic and an intrinsic battle

  663. within Peter uh and I think it's

  664. important for us to to follow this to

  665. the best of our ability what I'm about

  666. to say is not uh because I hope that you

  667. guys think I'm like studious and smart

  668. but rather I think it's important for us

  669. to understand that when something's

  670. happening in the word it's not

  671. flippant it's not like we just uh or

  672. theologians just decide if this means

  673. this because that's going to help it

  674. make sense no this is rooted In

  675. etymology when he changes his name that

  676. name can be traced back to words that

  677. mean something and so Peter and this

  678. isn't going to be your favorite part of

  679. the message but pretend that it is uh

  680. Peter in English is the transliteration

  681. of the Greek word Petros p t r

  682. oos Petrus is translated from the

  683. Aramaic word Kea Kea is transliterated

  684. into Greek and it's keus which is how we

  685. arrive at our English understanding of

  686. that word cus great great thanks guys

  687. and so Jesus changes his

  688. name from Simon to sephus Peter which

  689. means

  690. Rock and then Jesus says and Upon This

  691. Rock I will build my church now the

  692. subject of much debate for centuries and

  693. centuries there's really three schools

  694. of thought that happen here when Jesus

  695. changes his name as to what what is it

  696. that Jesus has just done in this moment

  697. there are some that believe that when

  698. Jesus says Peter calling him Rock and

  699. then he says and Upon This Rock I will

  700. build my chur church that Jesus is now

  701. linking Peter with being the foundation

  702. of the church there there are some that

  703. believe that but the reality is uh while

  704. Jesus uses Peter as as a spokesperson

  705. and he definitely has significant

  706. leadership in the church uh the reality

  707. is uh it's Peter who would later go on

  708. to write in First Peter that Jesus

  709. Christ is the Cornerstone so it would be

  710. a little bit weird for Jesus to say

  711. you're the foundation and then Peter to

  712. be like no I'm not you are that doesn't

  713. make

  714. sense but then there's another school of

  715. thought and I think this is the

  716. flimsiest one people are

  717. we we'll say Well when he says when

  718. Peter says you're the Christ you're the

  719. son of the Living God Jesus is saying

  720. upon that rock upon what you just said

  721. upon the faith that you just mustered up

  722. I will build my church but that that

  723. doesn't make a whole lot of sense either

  724. why would Jesus Say Hey I want to name

  725. you rock and oh what you just said's a

  726. rock and so now we just got rocks Galore

  727. and we're going to build on that it's

  728. like no that doesn't that doesn't make

  729. sense like now we're playing with rocks

  730. it it it doesn't it doesn't work and

  731. then there there's really the Third Way

  732. of understanding it and I think it's the

  733. most helpful one and I think it's the

  734. truest one and I think it's what Jesus

  735. is getting after here uh Jesus changes

  736. his name to sephus Peter means

  737. Rock but then Jesus says and Upon This

  738. Rock I will build my church and what's

  739. interesting is that there's a

  740. differentiation in the translation of

  741. that noun stick with me Jesus names

  742. Peter Petrus it's the masculine version

  743. of that noun p e t r o s

  744. that means a stone that can be easily

  745. moved or

  746. thrown you might say a living

  747. Stone but then Jesus says something

  748. different when he says and Upon This

  749. Rock he uses the feminine version of

  750. that noun p t r

  751. as which means a massive rock or a cliff

  752. there's two differing rocks that are

  753. happening here Jesus is saying Peter you

  754. are a rock but he's saying on this

  755. rock on the foundation that is Jesus

  756. Christ is upon which the church is going

  757. to be built he's saying hey I'm the

  758. Cornerstone Jesus will say two chapters

  759. later and Peter will agree with him in

  760. First Peter and say Jesus Christ is the

  761. Cornerstone can I tell you nothing in

  762. the church is being built on anything

  763. other than the foundation that is the

  764. person of Jesus Christ he's the

  765. foundation and so we

  766. see that he says I say to you you're

  767. Peter and on this rock I will build my

  768. church and the gates of Hades will not

  769. overpower it I'll give you the keys to

  770. the kingdom of heaven and whatever you

  771. bind on Earth will have been bound in

  772. heaven and whatever you loose on Earth

  773. will have been loosed in heaven uh Gates

  774. and Hades has a pretty simple uh

  775. explanation Gates Hades death Darkness

  776. are the ways that they're often

  777. understood and so Jesus is just saying

  778. what's really good news I'm saying he's

  779. just saying like it's not significant

  780. Jesus is

  781. saying Darkness the devil and those who

  782. who do his bidding are not going to

  783. Prevail against my church a't that good

  784. news here today uh that that none of

  785. those things are going to

  786. Prevail and then he says and I'll give

  787. you the keys to the kingdom he says I'll

  788. give you the keys to the kingdom Keys

  789. unlock doors that's free right that's

  790. geez unlock doors my pastor was on one

  791. today right like uh uh they also shocker

  792. unlock doors and so lock and

  793. unlock and what's interesting is that

  794. Peter will unlock

  795. doors for people to hear the gospel

  796. often and Jesus Will Empower other

  797. disciples with an empowering uh message

  798. to go forth and do similar things but he

  799. uses this specific phrase often times if

  800. you look back in history anytime Peter

  801. is painted anywhere he'll have keys in

  802. his hands uh and he's white and so uh

  803. what you'll see is that

  804. Peter is given the keys to the kingdom

  805. and he will unlock the doors of the

  806. Gospel to many people

  807. right act

  808. chapter 2 he preaches at Pentecost 3,000

  809. people hear the gospel and become a part

  810. of the church right you see in Acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  811. chapter 8 that the Samaritans are like

  812. we've heard of this good news but then

  813. we we don't know who the holy spirit is

  814. what's a Holy Spirit and he's like you

  815. don't know the Holy Spirit and he prays

  816. that there would be people that receive

  817. the holy spirit in Acts chapter 10 Peter

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  818. receives a vision from God and we see

  819. that all the Four Corners are laid down

  820. and we see that there are all of these

  821. different animals and the Lord says to

  822. Peter get up and eat there are things

  823. that Jewish individuals are not supposed

  824. to eat in order to M kosher and yet the

  825. reality is God was showing him in this

  826. moment hey I'm bringing both Jew and

  827. Gentile into my kingdom and into my

  828. family and we see that in Acts chapter

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  829. 10 he would end up going and he would

  830. meet with Cornelius who's a centurion a

  831. Roman guard and he would end up

  832. proclaiming the good news to him and

  833. baptizing his whole family that he's

  834. unlocking the doors for both Jew and

  835. Gentile to hear the gospel and that's

  836. good news because most of us in here are

  837. Gentiles and so we find ourselves in

  838. this place where Peter is unlocking the

  839. doors and then he says something

  840. interesting he says whatever ever you

  841. bind and

  842. loose will have been bound and

  843. loose Jesus used the metaphor bind and

  844. loose here um and it's something that

  845. rabbis would often use uh rabbis would

  846. use the term binding and loosing and

  847. that it would often be used to describe

  848. things that are being forbidden or

  849. permitted uh and and so in in

  850. traditional law right there there were

  851. lots of intricacies and things that

  852. aren't even like tertiary issues that

  853. would be elevated to primary issues

  854. which I know people today know nothing

  855. about but hypothetically speaking it's

  856. possible where all of a sudden you would

  857. see that uh Jewish people would would be

  858. struggling to interpret the law in

  859. specific instances um anybody in here

  860. have a dog love your dog I love my dog

  861. more than most people right I've said

  862. this before I'm not going to go through

  863. it today I'll do it later but what what

  864. we find is that um you can't touch a

  865. corpse and remain clean and so often

  866. times people would be like hey my dog

  867. just died died inside my house it didn't

  868. die outside my house does that make me

  869. clean and they would bind and loose they

  870. would say that's forbidden or that's

  871. permitted they they would do things like

  872. that like real intricate things to

  873. describe what's being forbidden what's

  874. being permitted and so Jesus uses this

  875. language but he does so in a really

  876. specific way I need us to hear this he

  877. says that it will have been you might

  878. read a translation that can be sometimes

  879. a little bit unfortunate in the way that

  880. it's interpreted some people reading it

  881. says whatever you bind on Earth will be

  882. bound in heaven but this translation

  883. that I'm reading specifically and on

  884. purpose says whatever you bind on Earth

  885. will have been bound in heaven whatever

  886. you loose on Earth will have been loosed

  887. in heaven why is that significant

  888. because some people act like they're God

  889. and they are determining Heavenly policy

  890. and they're saying hey whatever I bind

  891. and loose on Earth what that's happening

  892. in heaven I'm bending God's will to

  893. whatever I say things should be and

  894. that's not what's being instructed here

  895. it's not that Peter is enacting Heavenly

  896. policy he's falling in line with the

  897. Heavenly plan that what we see happening

  898. is God is just letting us know that when

  899. the apostles write Doctrine when they

  900. write these letters the things that you

  901. are saying to the people here that is

  902. the reality of what heaven has allowed

  903. and is going forth does that make sense

  904. it's not that you're determining things

  905. it's that they've been determined but

  906. you have a unique role right now in the

  907. kingdom and we see that Peter's not

  908. exclusive in that calling we see that it

  909. will happen with other Apostles

  910. too Jesus asks a really critical

  911. question he says who do people say that

  912. the son of man is and then he says who

  913. do you say that I

  914. am and Peter says you're the Christ

  915. you're the Messiah you're the son of the

  916. Living God and that is

  917. significant because what you see is that

  918. when Peter acknowledges who Jesus is he

  919. changes his name and can I tell you the

  920. same thing is true of us when you start

  921. to acknowledge who Jesus is that's when

  922. he'll start to change you that when you

  923. start to know Jesus true identity that's

  924. when he'll start to change your identity

  925. that you will see that he does something

  926. significant in changing Peter's name he

  927. says hey

  928. Simon you're now Peter and it's not just

  929. that Peter was like it's not that Jesus

  930. was like you know I just like Peter more

  931. than Simon I don't know it's it's it's

  932. rooted in something more than that Simon

  933. comes from a verb that means shifting

  934. sand or Blown Away With the

  935. Wind Peter means rock or rocky

  936. that's

  937. insane Peter's like the loosest cannon

  938. imaginable and he's calling him

  939. solid I mean this is a guy that steps

  940. out of a boat he's like doing a Princess

  941. Diana wave to the disciples who didn't

  942. make it and then he

  943. sinks it's like he has these high highs

  944. and these low lows this is the guy that

  945. when Jesus is about to be arrested

  946. Peter's like not on my watch get rid of

  947. your ear dude like in Jesus like stop it

  948. stop it quit cutting guys ear ears off

  949. healing ears on his way to the cross

  950. that mean it's like he's a certifiable

  951. mess do you understand taking the guy

  952. from shifting sand to Solid Rock doesn't

  953. make

  954. sense and then he'll go on to lead the

  955. church and it's this guy who's going to

  956. write things with his own pen under the

  957. power of the Holy Spirit like you guys

  958. need to be sober minded and

  959. self-controlled I'm like you need to or

  960. what are you talking

  961. about how how do you take something

  962. someone that is so

  963. unstable and make them solid because

  964. when Jesus wants to do something new he

  965. does not need everything that you think

  966. should be there to be there it's by his

  967. power and strength that he can take

  968. something that you didn't think was

  969. possible and make it completely

  970. new and I'm saying that to you today

  971. because we believe that's what God wants

  972. to do with

  973. us if you've been at this church for any

  974. length of

  975. time then then you've probably heard

  976. Isaiah 43: 18 and 19

  977. cited uh a

  978. lot and

  979. it's do not remember the former things

  980. of old behold do you not perceive it I'm

  981. making a way in the wilderness and

  982. streams rivers in the

  983. desert and that's God saying I'm going

  984. to do something radical and remarkable

  985. in and through you and we see that Jesus

  986. does something radical and remarkable in

  987. and through Peter The Impossible but in

  988. order to see that change come to

  989. fruition he changes his

  990. name and I say that to you today because

  991. we have been wondering for a long time

  992. hey what is this thing that God wants to

  993. do do do the leaders in the room sense

  994. it we we've we've sensed

  995. it and as we've been sensing it we've

  996. been trying to be sensitive to the

  997. spirit of God and recognize God does

  998. want to do something remarkable in here

  999. but it's going to require some change

1000. and so I'm I'm thrilled to announce to

1001. you today that we believe that the Lord

1002. is calling us to move away and change

1003. the name LifeBridge Church to the name

1004. key church as we go into later 2025

  1005. [Applause]

1006. some people like change some people hate

1007. change some people are clapping and some

1008. people are like hey pause just listen to

1009. me for a couple minutes okay promise you

  1010. I'm with

  1011. you I I have

1012. been living and pastoring in Orlando for

1013. uh five years feels like 50 but it's

  1014. been

1015. five and that's really not a slight it

1016. just this place has always felt like

  1017. home to us

1018. and I the the Lord dropped a verse on me

1019. that I I just have not been able to

  1020. shake the whole

1021. time Matthew 11:28 Jesus says come to me

    Matthew 11:28

1022. all who are weary and burdened and I

  1023. will give you

  1024. rest what a beautiful

1025. mandate for the people of God to be able

1026. to continue the beautiful mission of

1027. God he says reach the

1028. world but retreat with the one who

  1029. called you to reach

1030. it and we believe that that's what God

1031. has called us to do and we have wondered

1032. how can we have vision for where we're

1033. going in a mission that we're carrying

1034. in a word and some of you have heard me

1035. say this before but let me just say it

1036. again for those of you that haven't

  1037. heard it a key is a noun it's a thing

1038. it's a Concrete stone or metal platform

1039. that's lying alongside of or projecting

1040. into the water for the loading and the

1041. unloading of ships a key is also often

1042. referred to as a landing

1043. place when ships have been navigating

1044. difficult Seas as people do they will

1045. sail into a harbor and they will land at

1046. a key and a key is the stabilizing Force

1047. where a ship can come in and find rest

1048. and you offload old cargo and crew and

1049. onboard new cargo and crew and then send

1050. that ship back out with new Mission

  1051. Vision and

  1052. purpose and we

1053. believe God has strategically placed

1054. this church here so that Jesus Christ

1055. can be known and that people would

1056. recognize he's the key in your life we

1057. believe that this is a physical

1058. realization of something that has much

1059. more spiritual significance which is

1060. what it's this that In Christ Alone will

1061. you find the stabilizer of your

1062. souls in Christ alone as you've been

1063. navigating the difficulties of this life

1064. anybody in here gone through some

1065. difficult stuff where you're going hey I

  1066. need somewhere to

1067. land and we're here to say there's

1068. someone you need to land in the arms and

  1069. who's waiting on

1070. you it's it's not just that In Christ

1071. Alone he's the stabilizer of your souls

1072. but it's In Christ Alone can you offload

1073. old cargo and crew and onboard new cargo

1074. and crew some of y'all need to get rid

1075. of some friends and influences and

1076. things in your life and be onboarded

1077. with new friends and influences and

1078. things in your life so that your wearied

1079. and burdened souls can find refreshed

1080. and renewed strength in Christ alone but

1081. it's not just a place where you can find

  1082. comfort and

1083. rest but he will send you back out with

1084. new Mission Vision and purpose one that

1085. is aligned with his that we might reach

1086. a broken world for the story of God and

1087. for the glory of God and bring them into

1088. it and so listen I real

  1089. realize that a a change can be a

1090. lot but we have wrestled with this I I

1091. got to tell you this I I sobbed all

  1092. morning

1093. sobbed when I saw certain

1094. people I mean Greg H's here I mean Greg

1095. Hy watched me ugly cry this morning I I

  1096. mean like I don't cry pretty or I don't

  1097. cry pretty I can't even think I'm so

  1098. messed up

1099. I have had two things in my life that

1100. I've ever felt this clear on ever in my

1101. life that I needed to marry

1102. Lindsay otherwise I would be doing I

1103. would either be preaching or doing

1104. prison ministry from inside the

1105. prison and this name that

1106. it feels like obedience to us it's a

  1107. step of

1108. obedience and I believe God wants to do

1109. incredible things through it I'm letting

1110. you know on January 5th we won't even

1111. change the name formally till September

  1112. 7th why because I I I know it's hard to

1113. digest for some but there's also a lot

1114. that needs to go into

1115. it some people can be like is that it is

1116. that the big news just a name change

1117. it's not that there's so much more that

1118. goes along with it I don't know if you

1119. know this we have a space problem which

1120. by the way I'd like to let you know

  1121. there is room at the 8:30 I I know God's

1122. not up at 8:30 but I just and and I

  1123. don't preach the 8:30 cuz I'm not going

1124. to make it either uh I'm kidding I'm

  1125. there but I'm but I'm I'm I'm about 37%

1126. there and so but it's still great it's

1127. it's kind of like I'm missing my frontal

1128. lobe it's fantastic and so and you're

1129. like well what is this then I know just

1130. just think about it just think about it

1131. because we got a parking problem I know

1132. none of you have ever been frustrated

1133. with our parking here and you love it

1134. and it's not a big deal and you're just

1135. like here and like want to worship with

1136. us afterward and you don't care and you

  1137. don't bother I know it's awesome but we

1138. feel like we should fix

  1139. it don't clap Don't

1140. Clap we also are aware of the fact that

1141. we have like a space issue

  1142. I I shouldn't say that but we have a

  1143. space issue

1144. right we got a space problem we're going

1145. to fix that we're committed to it the

1146. Elder team is committed to it I promise

1147. you as we add more people to that team

1148. and as we continue forward with that

  1149. Miss

1150. Men's Ministry has been something that

1151. we've just flat not done well enough

1152. here and there have been some really

1153. faithful guys that have made sure that

1154. it's not completely died and just want

1155. to publicly say thank you to those guys

1156. but can I also let you know like women's

  1157. ministry is thriving

1158. here and okay I get it yeah I get it

  1159. like

1160. okay and we we can do better so listen I

1161. mean guys on February the 21st we're

1162. going after the hearts and the minds and

1163. The Souls of men in our city and on

  1164. February 21st at 6 p.m. we're going to

1165. have an event here and there's going to

1166. be more information that comes out about

1167. that and we're excited for that there

1168. are things that we're going to get

1169. better at that key church is going to do

1170. really well that we just never did well

1171. as LifeBridge church but we're going to

1172. give it some time to digest have

1173. conversations with you but I just want

1174. you to know have agonized over this in

1175. prayer and believe this is where the

1176. Lord is leading us so if you have any

1177. love or trust of me then just know

  1178. that's where we're going and we're

1179. excited about it and I hope that you

1180. share in that excitement and so I want

  1181. to

1182. I want to pray because the 11:30 starts

1183. in 11 minutes and our parking

1184. Situation's bad so let me

  1185. pray yeah 11:45 yeah I don't

1186. know Brandon Boyd figur it out please

  1187. Jesus thank

1188. you thank you for these people thank you

1189. for this place thank you for um how

1190. you're knitting us together and God

1191. calling us to more uh Lord I pray for

1192. every heart in here some that are

  1193. excited some that

1194. are interested uh in in all that's

1195. taking place but Lord would you continue

1196. to call us out onto Waters that are

1197. challenging and that are glorifying to

1198. you Jesus we love you we praise you we

1199. thank you we ask it in your name amen
