  1. it is great to see you and to be here

  2. with you all this morning are we staying

  3. warm is that is that going well you

  4. don't get to say that a lot around here

  5. so uh I don't know what's going on here

  6. but I did not move here for this all

  7. right so uh as quickly as it can it

  8. needs to get out of here this would have

  9. been great like around Christmas you

  10. know but starting January 1 uh the Lord

  11. and I have a regular scheduled meeting

  12. on January 1 it is time to get warm

  13. again it does not need to be cold but

  14. I'm glad that you all weathered and

  15. braved the conditions outside the roads

  16. that are perfectly fine and everything

  17. else it's great that you are with us and

  18. so uh hey I am so grateful that we could

  19. be gathered together here in this place

  20. and I'm grateful for a number of

  21. different reasons but uh primarily

  22. because this past weekend we ended up

  23. moving through beginning a brand new

  24. collection of conversations that we

  25. called the Renaissance and I told you

  26. that the Renaissance is a collection and

  27. it is a discussion that is fixated and

  28. focused on the idea of Revival and

  29. revitalization that not only happens

  30. within an individual but you see that it

  31. can happen within a group of individuals

  32. that ends up enacting quite a bit of

  33. change in what we would call even this

  34. church and so uh I mentioned just kind

  35. of by way of refresher that I have

  36. stolen the name for the collection uh

  37. that I ended up taking it from a famed

  38. period of time in human history that we

  39. see the Renaissance was a period of time

  40. where there was Revival and

  41. revitalization that was happening in a

  42. multitude of ways that we see that art

  43. and literature and theorizing and

  44. philosophizing and Science and all of

  45. these incredible things there was

  46. Revival happening predominantly in

  47. Europe that would end up shaping that

  48. culture over the course of the 14th to

  49. the 16th centuries but probably the

  50. thing that we end up knowing better than

  51. anything else that came out of that time

  52. uh is that there was incredible art and

  53. artists that were produced during the

  54. Renaissance and so we saw people like

  55. arav vagio and Donatello and

  56. Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci that

  57. were all producing these incredible

  58. works of art things like the creation of

  59. Adam and the statue of David the cine

  60. Chapel the Mona Lisa the painting of The

  61. Last Supper and so we saw that while

  62. there were all of these incredible

  63. things happening in all of these

  64. different fields the reality is is that

  65. Revival and revitalization didn't just

  66. touch every area outside of the church

  67. but actually it ended up infiltrating

  68. the church as well in an incredible way

  69. we see the Reformation would end up

  70. happening and we see protestantism

  71. kicked off and things that we're

  72. grateful for but the reality is while

  73. there are things that all borrow from

  74. the Renaissance and how that will impact

  75. some of the things that you see over the

  76. course of the next several weeks we

  77. really honed in more so on the actual

  78. word and the definition of the word

  79. renaissance which means a Revival or a

  80. renewed interest in something and that

  81. something gives us a whole lot of

  82. creative Liberty in what exactly it is

  83. that we are talking about and so I

  84. believe that we're seeing an incred

  85. incredible Renaissance that's happening

  86. in the church across America but even in

  87. our own church here and now and so last

  88. week I put some rather large news out

  89. there on the table I said that over the

  90. course of the next nine months we are

  91. going to be moving from being LifeBridge

  92. Church to key church and I mentioned

  93. that there are quite a few things that

  94. are going to come with that as well

  95. right and so there's a space issue that

  96. we have obviously um there's a space

  97. issue and you guys don't like scooting

  98. in for people you don't know and so uh

  99. we're going to have to do something

  100. about that right you're just like hey I

  101. don't care like see at the 11:30 right

  102. and so like we we see the love of God in

  103. you but we feel like we need to address

  104. it and so um we got things like that and

  105. then uh hypothetically speaking I

  106. haven't heard that this is a problem but

  107. I I just in case it maybe would be in

  108. the future parking could be something

  109. that we maybe should address uh I don't

  110. think it's a big deal maybe won't touch

  111. it but uh we'll see what the Elder team

  112. does with that right and so maybe that's

  113. something that we need to talk about uh

  114. we're going to address those those

  115. issues we talked about in the immediate

  116. future we have things like Men's

  117. Ministry that has been built off the

  118. backs of some really faithful men that

  119. have kept that thing going for some time

  120. but we believe that we need to get our

  121. hands in the mix there and and see some

  122. incredible Men's Ministry things pop up

  123. and so on February 21st we're going to

  124. have an incredible men's event that we

  125. hope all of the guys in here can join

  126. and it's going to be amazing to get men

  127. mobilized in our church and and we

  128. anticipate seeing more and more and more

  129. where we're mobilizing min mysteries in

  130. an incredible way but I I couldn't help

  131. but think to myself that if you're going

  132. to announce that there's going to be

  133. that kind of a change and then it's

  134. going to be 9 months to have that baby

  135. like there's a lot of just kind of like

  136. what's going on in the middle and I

  137. thought what could be really helpful in

  138. US understanding who we believe that the

  139. Lord is leading us to become is going

  140. through values that would help us

  141. understand these things and so over the

  142. course of the next seven weeks we have

  143. seven subsequent values that we're going

  144. to go through about who it is that we

  145. believe that the Lord is leading us to

  146. become and the first one is this Jesus

  147. is our

  148. purpose Jesus Christ is our purpose and

  149. some of us are probably like well of

  150. course he is and what I would say to

  151. that is be careful be careful John 1

  152. beginning in verse one that's where

  153. we're going to be there's not a greater

  154. beginning of anything ever written in

  155. all of human history John chapter one

  156. are y'all awake this morning are you

  157. ready for the word is there anyone that

  158. would say I don't want something someone

  159. to sit next to me right now that's

  160. looking for a seat and they can go to

  161. the

  162. 11:30 everybody's down to have someone

  163. next to them so y'all feel free sit by

  164. whoever you want to extroverts will you

  165. raise your

  166. hands sit next to them all right let's

  167. read John 1 beginning in verse one in

  168. the beginning was the

  169. word and the Word was with God and the

  170. Word was God he was with God in the

  171. beginning all things were created

  172. through him him and apart from him not

  173. one thing was created that has been

  174. created in him was life and that life

  175. was the light of men that light shines

  176. in the darkness and yet the darkness did

  177. not overcome it let's pray

  178. together Lord I'm so grateful

  179. for this house this this church your

  180. word and Lord as we find ourselves

  181. navigating through what is one of the

  182. most incredible introdu

  183. of all time Lord I ask that there would

  184. be a a weight that lands on US in US of

  185. the significance of what it is that we

  186. are discussing here today Lord that

  187. there wouldn't be a flippancy a

  188. redundancy anything that just feels like

  189. it's the monotonous minutia of

  190. everything that we study and do in our

  191. Christian life but rather that there

  192. would be a fresh understanding of what

  193. it means to be a person who finds their

  194. purpose in and through the person in the

  195. finished work of Jesus Christ Lord would

  196. you move in a way that only you can this

  197. morning we love you we praise you and we

  198. thank you we ask this in Jesus name

  199. amen well on April the 28th

  200. 1789 Captain William blly was fast

  201. asleep on board his majesty ship Bounty

  202. when all of a sudden he was startled

  203. awake by his first mate Fletcher

  204. Christian lecher Christian was the first

  205. mate on board his majesty ship Bounty

  206. and he had commandeered the ship with a

  207. lot of other Sailors that were on board

  208. that didn't necessarily love what

  209. Captain William Blye was doing and so as

  210. a result they ended up starting a mutiny

  211. and they gathered all of these different

  212. people that would seize control of the

  213. HMS Bounty from William BL and then they

  214. would send he and his 18 loyalists that

  215. would stand by him into desperate

  216. circumstances William Blye and 18

  217. loyalists would be set a drift in the

  218. middle of the South Pacific on a small

  219. open 23 foot launch booat it appeared in

  220. that moment like Fletcher Christian had

  221. just handed William blee and his 18

  222. loyalists a death sentence but what's

  223. fascinating is that while it was bad

  224. when you just look at it overall the

  225. truth of the matter is they were given

  226. some Provisions William blle would end

  227. up writing a book that he would title

  228. with the most front Rood facing title

  229. ever the most clear description of what

  230. ever happened if you were wondering I

  231. wonder what this book is about he named

  232. his book A Narrative of the Mutiny on

  233. board his majesty ship Bounty and he

  234. ended up writing about the provisions

  235. that they were given and so he said one

  236. of the things that they were given was

  237. 150 pounds of bread which sounds like a

  238. lot until you think about the fact that

  239. that's dispersed amongst 19 guys for an

  240. unknown period of time he said we were

  241. given 150 pounds of bread some rum and

  242. some wine he said we tried to get a

  243. quadrant and a compass in the boat but

  244. we were forbidden on pain of death of

  245. bringing that compass into the boat we

  246. were not allowed to bring or to touch

  247. the compass Compass a map or any book of

  248. astronomical observations so to put it

  249. really mildly Captain William BL and his

  250. 18 loyalists were up a creek and without

  251. a paddle in this particular

  252. circumstance they had dire circumstances

  253. that they would be facing in the midst

  254. of life-threatening conditions and they

  255. did not find themselves in a place where

  256. they were actually able to bring much

  257. with them they had very little food they

  258. had some rum and some wine they were

  259. able to bring a couple of personal items

  260. with them very few things that they

  261. could hold on to for comfort in the

  262. midst of this circumstance thankfully

  263. they were able to manage bringing the

  264. quadrant and a seant on board that would

  265. help with some light navigation in the

  266. midst of their circumstances but the

  267. reality is that they had a very small

  268. chance of successful navigation and an

  269. even smaller chance of survival in the

  270. midst of the circumstances that they

  271. found themselves placed and so William

  272. blly would end up having to rely on

  273. something called dead reckoning that

  274. because he had managed to get a quadrant

  275. and a seant into this boat what we saw

  276. is that he was able to determine the

  277. direction that they were traveling and

  278. how far they had moved from a particular

  279. fixed point we see that as a result of

  280. having these two tools we saw that he

  281. was able to gather a relatively accurate

  282. estimation of the longitude and latitude

  283. their position of where they were in the

  284. universe but even more importantly was

  285. not only the fact that he was able to

  286. determine their longitude and latitude

  287. but William blle had a deep

  288. understanding of the way that the world

  289. was wired around him he had a deep

  290. understanding of currents and winds that

  291. he was able to help as they were

  292. navigating this circumstance we saw that

  293. he would navigate using the Sun by day

  294. and the stars by night that he

  295. understood fixed realities in the

  296. universe that would help lead them home

  297. and on June the 14th 1789 they made

  298. landfall after 47 days of being a drift

  299. in the middle of the open ocean in the

  300. South Pacific we see that they had

  301. finally gotten to a place where they

  302. made landfall and we saw that they were

  303. dealing with severe hunger and thirst he

  304. would write quote that they were nothing

  305. more than skin and bone they were in the

  306. middle of Ruthless storms that would

  307. push them off course they dealt with a

  308. hostile encounter that resulted in the

  309. Lost life of one of their crew members

  310. and still they were able to travel 3600

  311. nautical miles from Tonga to tamour in

  312. the East Indies and they were able to

  313. make landfall and not only navigate

  314. successfully but also they had a

  315. relatively strong percentage of survival

  316. 17 of the 19 men that were on board that

  317. ship ended up making it out alive in

  318. that particular circumstance William

  319. blly relied on something called

  320. Celestial navigation that we see that he

  321. was able to navigate successfully

  322. because he was well Tred in his

  323. understanding of fixed realities in the

  324. UN Universe we see that he navigated

  325. successfully because he understood

  326. longitude and latitude currents and

  327. winds using the Sun by day and the stars

  328. by night that he navigated successfully

  329. using little

  330. more than ultimate and unshakable truth

  331. about the world around him and I'm

  332. saying that to us here today because as

  333. a people and as a church and what we see

  334. with churches all over the country and

  335. all over the world is that while that

  336. makes sense to us and it seems was real

  337. simple and simplistic for us to

  338. understand the truth of the matter is

  339. that we can very often find ourselves in

  340. a place where you are drifting in your

  341. direction because you have misplaced

  342. your devotion that you can very easily

  343. find yourself in a place where you

  344. realize I am not anchored in my life in

  345. my purpose to anything that is an

  346. ultimate fixed reality but rather I'm

  347. chasing flimsy

  348. fantasies that what we're here to

  349. describe today is the fact that Jesus

  350. Christ is our purpose and there are a

  351. lot of us that would probably be like

  352. well duh I mean duh of course Jesus is

  353. our purpose like I'm a believer I'm a

  354. Christian that I go to church and that's

  355. what the church is about and what I

  356. would say is I think many of us have

  357. been at times in a place where we

  358. understand that you can very easily be

  359. going in a direction that you end up

  360. going a drift in ultimately later on

  361. because you've misplaced your devotion

  362. you begin your life in your life as a

  363. believer in Jesus completely and totally

  364. devoted to him but you start to end up

  365. drifting when you pursue distractions

  366. and over a little bit of time it's just

  367. one little degree after another where

  368. you can find yourself going in a wrong

  369. way where very easily Jesus is our

  370. purpose can become I am our

  371. purpose no I'm I'm the Bible's about me

  372. I'm David I'm here to slay no no you're

  373. the scar Israelite on the side that

  374. needed a rescuer and a savior to come in

  375. and step into your story so that you

  376. could go free we can feel like

  377. everything is about me what do I want

  378. what am I thinking we can very easily go

  379. from Jesus is our purpose to I am our

  380. purpose or maybe that's not the things

  381. that we've seen in our life maybe that's

  382. not our testimony what's equally scary

  383. is you can go from Jesus as our purpose

  384. to church as our

  385. purpose it's all about just like

  386. building up the church and all but but

  387. you can kind of Miss why it is that

  388. you're even doing that I had a guy reach

  389. out to me this week and said tell me

  390. about your growth strategy I said excuse

  391. me a growth strategy we don't have a

  392. growth strategy we have a hang on for

  393. dear life strategy we don't have a

  394. growth strategy because the reality is

  395. churches shouldn't have growth

  396. strategies churches should have Christ

  397. exalting strategies and if we're going

  398. to make a big deal about Jesus then the

  399. room will get full but the the reality

  400. is if you try to fill a room just to

  401. have an empty room you're going to have

  402. an empty soul and we don't want to have

  403. an empty soul but if you're going to

  404. make a big deal about Jesus and exalt

  405. him and be able to go to every single

  406. person in here and say how are you

  407. exalting Jesus Christ and worshiping him

  408. with all of who you are and all of what

  409. you have and you see that God in his

  410. grace and kindness is moving in the

  411. lives of people in this community and

  412. we're celebrating baptisms and we're

  413. seeing people repent of their sins

  414. falling on their face at the altar if a

  415. room gets full as a result of that then

  416. so be it but nothing else matters that

  417. he is our purpose and if anything else

  418. is then there's no reason we should

  419. gather that Jesus Christ is our

  420. purpose and there's not a better place

  421. to begin to understand that than in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  422. chapter 1 beginning in verse one John

    John 1 chapter mention

  423. chapter 1 beginning in verse one says

  424. this in the beginning was the word

  425. and the Word was with God and the Word

  426. was God we could mind the depths of that

  427. for

  428. weeks but it's interesting it says in

  429. the beginning and the introduction here

  430. is kind of fascinating because when it

  431. says in the

  432. beginning you kind of are going what are

  433. we talking about here because the gospel

  434. all the gospel narratives H have

  435. different Beginnings like Matthew will

  436. end up talking about a beginning where

  437. he says Jesus Christ the son of David

  438. the son of Abra Abraham and we see that

  439. Matthew kind of begins in Canaan with

  440. Abraham and is tracing the genealogy all

  441. the way back through him and then

  442. there's others where we see Mark we'll

  443. say Jesus Christ the son of God and then

  444. he goes into all these prophecies about

  445. John the Baptist and he says John came

  446. baptizing and it kind of starts in the

  447. beginning of his gospel with John and

  448. Jesus in the Jordan River and then we

  449. see Luke will do something a little bit

  450. different he'll say in the days of King

  451. Herod of Judea and we see that Luke is

  452. kind of beginning with Jesus in

  453. Bethlehem on the day that Jesus is born

  454. but we see here in John that he says in

  455. the beginning and it's unlike any other

  456. introduction or beginning that we see it

  457. says in the beginning was the word and

  458. the Word was with God and the Word was

  459. God before it all and what we see is

  460. that if you're like me when it says in

  461. the beginning you're kind of like what

  462. beginning how long what are we talking

  463. about what's the what are we what is

  464. being referenced here and if you've

  465. spent any kind of time uh in church

  466. before where people acknowledge the

  467. Gospel of John and go through it with

  468. any kind of depth then you'll probably

  469. recognize that at some point or another

  470. uh you probably had someone say that in

  471. the beginning is talking about eternity

  472. past which isn't heresy or horrific or E

  473. of evil intention but I just think it's

  474. a bad definition because eternity by

  475. definition isn't really Bound by time

  476. doesn't really have a past doesn't

  477. really have a future it just is it's

  478. eternity and so many scholars in

  479. theologians come around the idea that in

  480. the beginning is really talking about in

  481. the beginning meaning creation when

  482. creation began and that's significant

  483. for us to understand because though it's

  484. difficult for the finite mind to

  485. comprehend what John is saying to us is

  486. that the word has always been he's

  487. always been there from the beginning in

  488. the beginning all of this it's not

  489. mindless it isn't thoughtless it isn't

  490. pointless he was there with intention

  491. and so we see it's interesting I I I'm

  492. going to read quite a bit from different

  493. people here today simply because there

  494. is so much work done on the Gospel of

  495. John and there are people that are

  496. much it's hard to describe just the

  497. level of clarity that they bring and so

  498. as much as I try to bring some clarity

  499. around it we're going to read some of

  500. these guys that have done unbelievable

  501. work in mining John and one commentator

  502. said this John wants us to stand in awe

  503. of Jesus Christ as God and as the one

  504. who is revealing the unseen God to us

  505. just as a word reveals an unseen thought

  506. it is found found ational to the

  507. Christian faith it is crucial to your

  508. personal faith that you understand and

  509. embrace the truth that Jesus Christ is

  510. fully God another would contribute and

  511. say if Jesus were only a man then Jesus

  512. died for his own sins and we're still in

  513. our sins we have no hope in order to

  514. reconcile sinful people to a holy God

  515. Jesus must be God in human flesh and

  516. thank God that's what the scriptures

  517. testify to it says in the beginning was

  518. the word what is the

  519. word and uh I I'll tell you this can get

  520. dense and so I'm going to do my best to

  521. go a little bit slower here and make

  522. sense of this because it can get muddy

  523. fast and so I've ran this by multiple

  524. people to make sure that it can make

  525. sense for us here today and so track

  526. with me as best you can here it says in

  527. the beginning was the word word in the

  528. original coin Greek language is logos or

  529. logos depending on how much you want to

  530. get into a fight with nerd because the

  531. reality is I'm from Texas and so it's

  532. logos and that's the way that it's going

  533. to be pronounced we don't do la nothing

  534. I'm not from like Minneapolis from

  535. Dallas and so it's logo sorry sorry I

  536. love Minneapolis it's great why would

  537. you live there and so what we see is

  538. that actually uh though logos long is a

  539. familiar term probably even though it's

  540. foreign because if you spend any time in

  541. church you've probably heard it before

  542. now here's here's the truth of the

  543. matter uh logos carried an unbelievably

  544. Rich meaning and there's a couple of

  545. different AES that it will swing on

  546. logos means

  547. communication communication in the sense

  548. that this is a thought expressed in

  549. Words which is how it's a great great

  550. way to Define communication it's a

  551. thought expressed in words but equally

  552. if not more important is that it's not

  553. just a word it's not just a name it's

  554. not just a thing that's being expressed

  555. and said but equally or more important

  556. is that that thing is an expressed

  557. thought which is to say that there is an

  558. intelligence behind it that there's

  559. intention behind it that there's a

  560. creative directive word behind it that

  561. it's not just that something sprang into

  562. action but rather there is thought

  563. behind the word there's meaning there

  564. and that's significant because in in

  565. this particular time Greek secular

  566. philosophers uh they didn't really feel

  567. like anything was deeply personal the

  568. world was deeply impersonal and so

  569. anything that was SP spoken into

  570. existence the idea of creation is that

  571. it's just reason and order it's not like

  572. there's any thought or intention behind

  573. it it just is and yet John is trying to

  574. communicate something different to us

  575. John is saying that this this impersonal

  576. cultural context that we're living in

  577. where everyone thinks that things just

  578. are and there's nothing personal behind

  579. it I'm trying to tell you it's deeply

  580. personal I'm trying to tell you there's

  581. intelligent thought behind this that

  582. it's not abs of Love or thought of you

  583. or intention and so what's fascinating

  584. is that John will use this Greek word

  585. logos and yet there's an Aramaic

  586. equivalent called memra Aramaic is

  587. important because it was the language

  588. that the common Jewish individual was

  589. speaking during this time Hebrew which

  590. the Old Testament is written in at this

  591. particular point was something that

  592. usually you were highly educated if you

  593. were speaking in understanding Hebrew

  594. that it it was something that usually

  595. you were in the work of some type of

  596. religious texts if that's a language

  597. that you understood and used often but

  598. Aramaic was used more for the commoner

  599. it's what Jesus would have spoken more

  600. than anything else and so what's

  601. interesting is that Aramaic equivalent

  602. of logos is memra and we see that it's

  603. it's mingling with the Old Testament

  604. idea of the word memra had a little bit

  605. more of a rich understanding of the

  606. creative thought of God behind all of

  607. creation and it actually meant in it in

  608. the sense of the creative and directive

  609. word of God manifesting his power in the

  610. world of matter and of mind so if you're

  611. still tracking with me here John is

  612. trying to mingle a common word that was

  613. understood in the context of a people

  614. that the scriptures had been handed down

  615. through and he's saying in the middle of

  616. a cultural context that is deeply

  617. impersonal and secular he's saying that

  618. thing that you think is impersonal is

  619. deeply personal and so behold the

  620. expression and the thought of God behold

  621. God's creative and divine agent who has

  622. always been and always will be in Jesus

  623. Christ that Jesus Christ is the word he

  624. is the power and he is the expressed

  625. person of God that we see that Jesus is

  626. God's

  627. self-expression of creation of wisdom of

  628. Revelation and of Salvation that he's

  629. God's self-expression of his own passion

  630. and sacrificial love that he cares

  631. deeply for his creation he cares deeply

  632. for you and for me that there is thought

  633. behind these words and it's not empty

  634. and impersonal it's deeply personal it's

  635. God going after you from the very

  636. beginning do you see that and so we see

  637. that in this secular space and time with

  638. uh these Greek speaking people and the

  639. Greeks themselves what we see is that

  640. often times we see in other places in

  641. Scripture that they would associate uh

  642. God or Gods with being impersonal but

  643. they were a people that likeed to

  644. worship nonetheless they knew that there

  645. was a higher power imagine with me for a

  646. moment that you're living in a time and

  647. space where people are kind of religious

  648. in some way shape or form they just

  649. really want to live in the secular space

  650. as well and so they kind of think that

  651. there might be a higher power and

  652. there's kind of like a small remnant of

  653. people that still believe that God's on

  654. the throne uh and and so they're they're

  655. kind of confused about everything in the

  656. world's not going well could you can you

  657. imagine living in a world like that be

  658. crazy but what we see is that that's

  659. what's going on here and in Acts 17 what

  660. you see is that Paul will be in Athens

  661. and he'll stumble across these people in

  662. the way that they worship and he'll say

  663. something powerful to them in Acts

    Acts 17:22

  664. 17:22 Paul will say people of Athens I

  665. see that you are extremely religious in

  666. every respect as I was passing through

  667. and observing the objects of your

  668. worship I even found an altar on which

  669. it was inscribed to an unknown God what

  670. you Worship in ignorance this I Proclaim

  671. to you the God who made the world and

  672. everything in it he is Lord of Heaven

  673. and Earth he does not live in shrines

  674. made by hands neither is he served by

  675. human hands as though he needed anything

  676. he himself gives everyone life and

  677. breath in all things from one man he has

  678. made every nationality to live over the

  679. whole earth and has determine their

  680. appointed times and the boundaries of

  681. where they live he did this so they

  682. might see

  683. God and perhaps they might reach out and

  684. find him though he is not far from each

  685. one of us Paul is addressing a culture

  686. that's similar to our culture he says I

  687. know that you are deeply religious and

  688. can I tell you we have never lived at a

  689. time where people are more religious

  690. than they are right now they're deeply

  691. religious and you go what do you mean

  692. what I mean is that every person

  693. worships every person worships you don't

  694. get a choice of if you worship it's just

  695. who or what is it that you worship

  696. everybody's caught up in something that

  697. they ultimately look to for meaning

  698. truth and purpose in their life every

  699. single person and Paul stumbles across

  700. these people in Athens and he says Hey I

  701. want you to know that as I was walking

  702. among your people I noticed that you're

  703. deeply religious I also noted that there

  704. was an inscription on an altar that said

  705. to an unknown God and I just want you to

  706. know that you can know know him that you

  707. can know this God that you can seek him

  708. that he's not far from you you can reach

  709. him because he's reached down to you

  710. he's God come in human flesh his name is

  711. Jesus Christ I need you to know him he's

  712. not an unknown God he's a personal God

  713. who gave it all to have all of you do

  714. you want to know him do you want to know

  715. him and then we

  716. see that they start to be interested in

  717. the conversation

  718. it's interesting Tim Keller and I'm

  719. going to I'm going to quote something

  720. rather lengthy here uh which I don't do

  721. a whole whole lot but Tim Keller uh said

  722. something fascinating in one of his

  723. Works he said this everybody has to live

  724. for something but Jesus is arguing that

  725. if he is not that thing it will fail you

  726. first it will enslave you whatever that

  727. thing is you will tell yourself that you

  728. have to have it or there is no tomorrow

  729. second if you do achieve it it will fail

  730. to deliver the Fulfillment you expect he

  731. goes on to tell a story where he says

  732. American writer David Foster Wallace got

  733. to the top of his profession he was an

  734. award-winning then best-selling

  735. postmodern novelist and a few years

  736. before the end of his life he gave what

  737. is a now famous commencement speech he

  738. said everyone worships the only choice

  739. we get is what to worship and the

  740. compelling reason for maybe choosing

  741. some sort of God to worship ship is that

  742. pretty much anything else you worship

  743. will eat you

  744. alive if you worship money and things if

  745. they are where you tap your real meaning

  746. in life you will never have enough you

  747. will never feel that you've acquired

  748. enough it's the truth he says you

  749. worship your own body and beauty and

  750. sexual Allure and you will always feel

  751. ugly and when time and age start showing

  752. up you will die a million deaths before

  753. your loved ones plant you in the ground

  754. worship power and you will end up

  755. feeling weak and Afraid and you will

  756. need ever more power over others to numb

  757. your own fears worship intellect and

  758. being seen as smart and you will end up

  759. feeling stupid a fraud and always on the

  760. verge of being found out Keller would

  761. follow that up and say a couple of years

  762. after giving that speech Wallace killed

  763. himself and a non-religious man's

  764. parting words were pretty terrifying

  765. something will eat you

  766. alive because even though you may you

  767. might never call it worship you can be

  768. absolutely sure that you are worshiping

  769. and you are seeking and Jesus is saying

  770. this to us unless you are worshiping me

  771. unless I am the center of your life

  772. unless you are trying to get your

  773. spiritual thirst quenched through me and

  774. not through these other things unless

  775. you see that the solution must come

  776. inside rather than just pass by outside

  777. whatever you worship will abandon you in

  778. the end which begs the

  779. question who has your worship where is

  780. your purpose anchored

  781. where is

  782. it who has your devotion in your worship

  783. what gives you meaning and purpose who

  784. gives you meaning in purpose because if

  785. you misplace it you'll struggle in a way

  786. that is infinitely greater than any

  787. other struggle that you will face as you

  788. walk hand inand with your

  789. creator in the

  790. beginning was the word and the Word was

  791. with God John is jumping in taking the

  792. plunge into to trinitarian theology

  793. which is where most people end up

  794. committing heresy so this is great uh

  795. and what we see though is that there are

  796. a couple clear identifiable things that

  797. are given to us that are absolutely

  798. critical to our understanding of our

  799. faith here it says in the beginning was

  800. the word and the Word was with God we

  801. see that there has always been Eternal

  802. Fellowship between God the father and

  803. God the son and obviously God the Holy

  804. Spirit but we see here for our purposes

  805. and where we're at there's always always

  806. been Eternal Fellowship between God the

  807. father and God the son that we see that

  808. Jesus Christ is the second person of the

  809. Trinity of the godhead and it's being

  810. made clear to us that while they're the

  811. same in essence they are separate in

  812. person that they are together they're

  813. with one another and they are both God

  814. in essence and yet they're separate in

  815. their persons and it says in the

  816. beginning was the word and the Word was

  817. with God and the Word was

  818. God was

  819. God is God what that means is that when

  820. every single person that I'm not saying

  821. you do this but when you're scrolling

  822. mindlessly on Facebook or Instagram or

  823. whatever you do and there's someone who

  824. hasn't read the Bible speaking about the

  825. Bible because people's favorite thing to

  826. do that don't read the Bible is talk

  827. about it like they do is that what

  828. you'll see is that they'll often make

  829. the claim that there's no claim from the

  830. scriptures that Jesus is god well I

  831. don't no I mean that seems pretty clear

  832. to me in the beginning was the word and

  833. the Word was with

  834. God and the Word was God and in verse 14

  835. it will say that Jesus is God In the

  836. Flesh and so we see here that it's

  837. saying to us that

  838. Jesus comes to us he's God in human

  839. flesh he's Divine it's a clear

  840. indication of hypostatic Union which is

  841. just a fancy theological term for saying

  842. he's fully God and he's fully man and

  843. the two cannot be separated here from

  844. what we see that all God is in his

  845. person and nature can be found in Jesus

  846. isn't that great news that he's been

  847. revealed to us that we can see and know

  848. him it's just like I don't really know

  849. what I'm anchoring my life in him him

  850. who's been revealed to us and as you

  851. continue to read in the Gospel of John

  852. it becomes more and more clear it says

  853. in verse one and then in verse two in

  854. the beginning was the word and the Word

  855. was with God and the Word was God and

  856. then verse two says he was with God in

  857. the beginning which always makes makes

  858. me

  859. laugh like while I studied I kept

  860. thinking about how John was trying to

  861. figure out how he could make verse one

  862. plain and he's like I just don't know in

  863. the beginning was the word and the Word

  864. was with God and the Word was God how

  865. else can I say this he was with him in

  866. the

  867. beginning it's like we get it but he

  868. wants us to not brush by the fact that

  869. he's always been he's always

  870. been it says in verse three all things

  871. were created through him and apart from

  872. him not one thing was created that has

  873. been been created we talked about that

  874. word MRA in Aramaic and you see that

  875. it's talking about everything that we

  876. see in logos except it's also letting us

  877. know on a deeper contextual level that

  878. we see that the scriptures are given to

  879. the Jewish people and we see that it

  880. says here that he is God's creative and

  881. directive word that we see that he's

  882. always been creating under the authority

  883. and yet in cohesion with God the father

  884. that we see that it's saying he always

  885. has been there's nothing that you see

  886. that he did not create he made it all

  887. and in the Old Testament you'll notice

  888. the word at work in Psalm 33:6 it says

    Psalms 33:6

  889. the heavens were made by the word of the

  890. Lord and all the stars by the breath of

  891. his mouth it says in Psalm 147: 17 and

  892. 18 who can withstand his cold he sends

  893. his word and he melts them he unleashes

  894. his winds and the water

  895. flows Romans 11:36 and that that

    Romans 11:36

  896. beautiful doxology we see that Paul

  897. would say and from him and through him

  898. and to him are all things for him

  899. forever to him be the glory we see that

  900. Jesus Christ is the

  901. word and he was creating at creation and

  902. then broke into his own

  903. creation Colossians 1:16 says for

    Colossians 1:16

  904. everything was created by Him in heaven

  905. and on Earth the visible and the

  906. invisible whether Thrones or dominions

  907. or author ities all things have been

  908. created through and for him Jesus Christ

  909. the word has always been there from the

  910. beginning he's there at creation

  911. creating and then breaks into his own

  912. creation and if you think about it it is

  913. insane to imagine the fact that Jesus

  914. Christ who made Iron itself would allow

  915. his hands to be pierced with it that the

  916. same God who created the

  917. tree that would end up being made into a

  918. cross would willingly go to it to be

  919. hung on it

  920. why it says in him was life and that

  921. life was the light of men that the light

  922. shines in the darkness and yet the

  923. darkness did not overcome it he created

  924. all

  925. things and he's the source of all

  926. physical life the reason that any of us

  927. have breath in our lungs right now is

  928. because he has allowed it and allowing

  929. it whether you believe in him or not

  930. but he

  931. has even more that he's come to offer

  932. than just the physical life that you

  933. enjoy under common Grace right now in

  934. this moment that we see that he came to

  935. bring eternal life for those who would

  936. repent of their sins and call upon the

  937. name of Jesus and believe in him eternal

  938. life that is found in his name wherever

  939. there's life there's

  940. light that life and

  941. light broke into the chaos of the

  942. cosmos and he's breaking into your story

  943. into my

  944. story that we might be rescued and

  945. redeemed for his glory and what I love

  946. is that John will write that the light

  947. shines in the darkness and the Darkness

  948. has not overcome it and I think often

  949. times we can pit those together against

  950. one another as if they're equals and

  951. John's not writing as if they're equals

  952. he's saying hey there's Darkness he said

  953. and that light came and shines in the

  954. darkness and it didn't ever struggle

  955. with the darkness when it showed up the

  956. darkness left and though the darkness

  957. might try to push back on the light it

  958. doesn't stand a chance it doesn't stand

  959. a

  960. chance and so Jesus Christ is our

  961. purpose that all that we have is from

  962. him and all of who we are and what we

  963. have is for him we see that there is an

  964. ultimate unchanging fixed reality that

  965. will lead you in the ways of life in

  966. this life and into eternal life in Jesus

  967. Christ and I would rather be anchored in

  968. that fixed reality than pursuing flimsy

  969. fantasies that will abandon me in the

  970. end what better place to find your

  971. purpose and to make sure that you are

  972. sailing in the direction that he has

  973. called you than in the person of Jesus

  974. Christ who Hebrews 13:8 says is the same

    Hebrews 13:8

  975. yesterday today and forever

  976. he's unchanging everything else in this

  977. world it is fleeting it'll work for a

  978. moment but it'll leave you in an instant

  979. and Jesus Christ offers you what he

  980. offers all of us in the gospels Eternal

  981. and Abundant Life for those who call on

  982. his name and he hasn't gone anywhere

  983. he's still breaking into stories and

  984. setting people free and making them new

  985. and so you can find your purpose in lots

  986. of different places but you will

  987. ultimately find yourself beat upon the

  988. rocks of life going where do I go from

  989. here to the one who has never suffered

  990. from any kind of erosion the one who

  991. made all that you see Jesus Christ Our

  992. king that's where you anchor your

  993. [Applause]

  994. purpose and for you that maybe is new

  995. for

  996. you and so I want to I want to Bow and

  997. pray here for a moment if you would

  998. just stick with me and and and let me

  999. just

1000. ask if you're in here and you're like I

1001. have never heard this proclaimed in my

1002. life or maybe never heard this

1003. proclaimed like this in my life but I

1004. have chased everything everything power

1005. money sex you name it I've had it all

1006. I've tried it all and it hasn't led me

1007. anywhere and I find myself in places

1008. like this and spaces like this looking

1009. for the answer but I'm feeling like I'm

1010. hearing for the first time that it's

1011. found in this man this God Jesus Christ

1012. and I want to give my life to him if

1013. that's you would you just shoot your

1014. hand up if you're like I want to put my

1015. faith in Jesus Christ for the very first

1016. time today if that's you

1017. yeah and if that's you will you pray

  1018. with me and

1019. say Lord I Repent of my

  1020. sins I'm a sinner in need of a savior I

1021. believe that Jesus Christ lived the

1022. perfect life that I could not when he

1023. broke into this world the creation that

1024. he created I believe that he willingly

1025. went to the cross and that his blood

1026. covers my sins past present and future I

1027. believe he was buried in a tomb for

1028. three days but he rose to life again I

1029. believe that I can have life in his name

1030. and so I am calling upon him to save me

1031. and rescue me and redeem me and change

1032. me for his glory that I'm might come to

1033. find that my purpose is in something

1034. that spans well more than the

  1035. fleeting joys of this

1036. life I believe in my heart and confess

1037. with my mouth that Jesus Christ is

1038. Lord and God for the rest of

1039. us I know in my own

1040. life how easy it is to say the right

1041. things and be drifting in the wrong

  1042. direction

1043. ction and so Lord even for those of us

1044. that have Faithfully shown up here and

1045. maybe nobody else would ever think

1046. anything has gone astray father would we

1047. find ourselves in a place where it's

1048. just a time of reentering on you above

1049. all things and recognizing that in Jesus

1050. Christ Our Lord can our ultimate hope

1051. and purpose and life be found Lord we

1052. love you we praise you and we thank you

1053. we ask these things in Jesus name amen
