  1. all right good morning 10: a.m. can we

  2. make some noise for Jesus in this

  3. place well if we have not had the chance

  4. to meet my name is Jeff and I I have the

  5. privilege and honor of being a steward

  6. here at uh life Bridge Church and I'm so

  7. excited to be hanging out with my

  8. friends and my family thank you for all

  9. of you who are watching online as well

  10. we are so grateful for you um listen I

  11. cannot believe already it is February

  12. you know uh we are here and so just God

  13. just know that means that in a couple of

  14. days there is Valentine's Day um it is

  15. the same day every year and uh and so

  16. make sure that you know that you

  17. eliminate any excuses ladies if you need

  18. to do like my wife just send pictures

  19. that's the best way uh to get what you

  20. want just to s a picture and say you

  21. know what if the Lord puts this on your

  22. heart get

  23. this and if he ignores you just say you

  24. need to make sure you're at the men's

  25. event on the 21st so that they can pray

  26. over you um but seriously guys I'm

  27. excited to be here with you today we're

  28. going to continue through um our

  29. collection that is entitled The

  30. Renaissance and and this discussion and

  31. conversation that we've been navigating

  32. through the last couple of weeks Pastor

  33. Luke has taken us through uh this

  34. discussion that really the two

  35. overarching themes of this particular

  36. collection is centered around Revival

  37. and revitalization and and this word

  38. renaissance as as you've heard has been

  39. taken from a particular period of time

  40. time that was a very formative and

  41. transformative period of time between

  42. the 14th through the 16th century and we

  43. know that this was a time when we saw

  44. things like art and literature and

  45. science begin to flourish if you've ever

  46. been to uh Paris and you have a

  47. opportunity to go to uh the Lou the Lou

  48. is the largest museum on the planet it

  49. is a really really cool place where you

  50. get to go and see many amazing pieces of

  51. Art and pieces of literature uh that is

  52. there in the um in the Lou there it's

  53. also the home of the Mona Lisa now

  54. listen let me just because I love you so

  55. much let me go ahead and just debunk a

  56. couple of minutes when you get to see

  57. the Mona Lisa I'm just telling you

  58. you're going to be disappointed because

  59. um you walk literally you're walking

  60. down this Corridor where it's all of

  61. this beautiful amazing art all around

  62. you up on the ceiling or whatever you

  63. turn into this room and you walk into

  64. this massive room and there's beautiful

  65. portraits and pictures all over and then

  66. you see a little stanion right here and

  67. then you see the this small little

  68. picture and it is the Mona Lisa and you

  69. can't even get close to the Mona Lisa

  70. just by the way you know my wife and I

  71. we were there and we wanted my wife

  72. wanted to get a picture with the Mona

  73. Lisa I was like babe I'm telling you

  74. it's like it's gonna be like the

  75. miniature Lisa and uh and so but anyway

  76. so so I digress and so but but but the

  77. the Renaissance was a time where you

  78. know things flourish it was a time when

  79. we saw especially in the culture it

  80. really shaped the culture of Europe it

  81. really had a significant impact uh in

  82. the local church but by definition that

  83. word renaissance simply just means

  84. Revival uh or renewed interest in

  85. something and when we think about this

  86. whole idea of Revival outside of the

  87. historical time of the Renaissance in

  88. modern day time we think about that

  89. there are so many moments that we are

  90. seeing across our country where we're

  91. seeing Revival breakout uh whether it's

  92. breaking out in churches it's breaking

  93. out in college campuses and we believe

  94. that God's hand is uh there and that God

  95. is at work in these places around the

  96. world where we're seeing Revival break

  97. out but we also believe just as the Lord

  98. is doing some significant things around

  99. the world we also believe that the Lord

  100. is doing something right here in our

  101. midst and so as we step ladies and

  102. gentlemen into this defining moment in

  103. our Church's history I want to suggest

  104. that this conversation this collection

  105. that we're having it is beyond just

  106. talking about a name change I think

  107. that's not what if if we're thinking

  108. that this collection is about a name

  109. change I think we're missing the whole

  110. point of this conversation this this is

  111. about understanding that in this point

  112. of our lives in our ministry it's a

  113. defining moment to help us realign our

  114. hearts and our mind around some core

  115. values and principles and ideas which is

  116. why we are are walking through this

  117. collection this is also a time when you

  118. walk through these core values and ideas

  119. that there is change that is going on

  120. there is some change that is there in

  121. life if I don't care where you are

  122. whether whatever the phase and stage of

  123. your life is in life there's always

  124. going to be change change is inevitable

  125. and so how you approach change you

  126. should always do it prayerfully

  127. strategically methodically uh and and so

  128. for me personally if I'm being just

  129. honest I have uh a background in

  130. organizational leadership and so I love

  131. moments when organizations or entities

  132. or Ministries go through through uh

  133. change um experiences and I I think

  134. about great leadership uh uh thought

  135. leaders and and and Scholars like John

  136. carer and he has a principle called

  137. leading change and he did a book in 1996

  138. that is a great book that really kind of

  139. helps organization walk through change I

  140. think about uh uh Peter Ducker and Peter

  141. Ducker has a book that's entitled five

  142. questions every organization uh should

  143. ask themselves and so so this idea of of

  144. walk walking through change it is really

  145. really amazing and significant but I I

  146. appreciate the way that we're we're kind

  147. of navigating this as a Ministry

  148. together and so over the last couple of

  149. weeks last couple weeks Pastor Luke has

  150. kind of introduced a couple of ideas

  151. that we're saying are the core values of

  152. our ministry first and foremost is the

  153. most important thing is that Jesus is

  154. our purpose that is that should not

  155. catch anybody off guard that Jesus is

  156. the one that we should always not just

  157. individually but collectively Jesus is

  158. the one that we fix our eyes on we also

  159. understand this truth that within this

  160. body that we believe that belonging is

  161. our heart that every Everybody matters

  162. and how we express that is through being

  163. intentional How We Gather and cultivate

  164. a community we believe that everyone

  165. should be a part of a community and then

  166. on last week we talked about uh

  167. stewardship being our responsibility

  168. that we are called as faithful stewards

  169. not just to give money if we think that

  170. it's about money we've just missed the

  171. moment it's not just about moment it's

  172. about our our time our talents our tent

  173. but also our ability to walk alongside

  174. our fellow brothers and sisters and and

  175. help them as they're learning how to

  176. Steward their lives well and so that's

  177. what this collection is all about and

  178. this week this week I'm really really

  179. excited because we're going to step into

  180. uh the next core value that we're going

  181. to talk about that's simply entitled

  182. Excellence is our standard Excellence

  183. Excellence is our standard and and and

  184. to reinforce this idea we're going to

  185. look at a very familiar passage of

  186. scripture in um Matthew Chapter 5 this

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  187. is a part of Jesus's Sermon on the Mount

  188. And if you've ever read The Sermon on

  189. the Mount The Sermon on the Mount really

  190. kind of goes through uh Matthew Chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  191. 5 through chapter 7 and I believe that

  192. uh The Sermon on the Mount is kind of

  193. like a spiritual Manifesto if you will

  194. that Jesus he he provides for The

  195. Listener for the pro to the uh the

  196. believer to understand the core values

  197. and principles that we as followers of

  198. Jesus should Implement in practice and

  199. so what I love to do today which is a

  200. little different uh than just a normal

  201. sermon that I'll I'll preach typically

  202. but what I love to do is I love to have

  203. this particular conversation today that

  204. if we can look uh at this conversation

  205. to through two very unique Frameworks

  206. the first framework that I would love to

  207. talk about is through kind of like what

  208. we obviously know is a theological

  209. framework we're going to look at God's

  210. word because we're talking about

  211. Excellence being um the standard through

  212. the lens of scripture obviously but then

  213. secondly through a theological uh excuse

  214. me through a theoretical framework so

  215. we're going to go through the

  216. theological first through looking at

  217. God's word but then through a

  218. theoretical perspective and framework

  219. where we look at how can we leverage

  220. certain leadership principles uh and and

  221. and insights as we marry God's word to

  222. this whole idea that Excellence is our

  223. standard and so so I want to dive into

  224. this and before we do that I just I'm

  225. praying that we open up our hearts and

  226. that we we open up our minds and that we

  227. say to ourselves first and foremost hey

  228. God help me be uh a person who embodies

  229. a spirit of Excellence having a desire

  230. to uh be a person who's excellent in all

  231. things why because we we want to embody

  232. Excellence not for our Glory it's not

  233. about our Glory but it is it's about his

  234. glory we want to make uh the gospel

  235. known to everybody we come in contact

  236. with so we're going to look at Matthew 5

  237. and verses 40 uh excuse me

  238. 38-42 and I'll be honest with you like

  239. you know for some of you uh if you've

  240. never heard this page scripture um it's

  241. going to be a little tough uh some you

  242. might have heard this passage scripture

  243. and you conveniently like to pass over

  244. it because the application of the word

  245. uh is a little tough for you because of

  246. what Jesus is very clear and what he

  247. says right here but we're just going to

  248. kind of go right through because we

  249. believe here we're not going to shy away

  250. from doing the hard things can we say

  251. Amen even when it's uncomfortable to our

  252. flesh so are we ready for the word today

  253. all right well let's look at Matthew 5

  254. Matthew 5 verse

    Matthew 5:38–42

  255. 38-42 this is what Jesus says says

  256. you've heard that it was said an eye for

  257. an eye and a tooth for a tooth but I

  258. tell you don't uh resist an

  259. evildoer on the contrary if anyone slaps

  260. on your right sheet then turn the other

  261. to him also let's just pause right there

  262. I mean I just how many of you how I mean

  263. let's just let's pause right there I

  264. don't ever want to rush through that I

  265. mean so Jesus is saying I'm not saying

  266. this we're all reading this together he

  267. says Hey listen somebody slaps you just

  268. got it here's the other cheek right it

  269. is literally I mean okay all right I'm

  270. just telling all right and so it gets

  271. even better it gets 40 is even better he

  272. says as for the one who wants to sue you

  273. and take away your shirt let them have

  274. your coat as well so so let me get this

  275. straight Jesus somebody slaps me give

  276. them the other cheat somebody wants to

  277. sue me take my shirt hey cool I'mma give

  278. you my jacket too let's throw the jacket

  279. in the lawsuit that's what he's

  280. saying

  281. 41 oh I love your faces right now um if

  282. anyone forces you to go one mile go with

  283. them

  284. too give to the one who asks you

  285. and don't don't turn away from the one

  286. who wants to borrow from you let's pray

  287. because I think we need

  288. to Father God I just thank you so much

  289. for being so good to us God I just pray

  290. right now that as we are walking into

  291. your word God that we won't just be

  292. hearers of your word but doers of your

  293. word and God I thank you for what you're

  294. doing in this house and I pray right now

  295. that as we uh rally around uh this new

  296. season of ministry God that we uh God

  297. will not just um um hear these words

  298. that are preached but we will allow

  299. these words to be our own personal

  300. Manifesto a declarative uh thought and

  301. mindset and attitude and disposition

  302. that we will hold collectively as the

  303. body of Christ thank you for uh what

  304. you're doing in this place now bless uh

  305. your word in Jesus name we pray amen

  306. amen um well I know for many of you you

  307. are there's a lot of coffee connoisseurs

  308. in this place and and that some of you

  309. you know you like those Niche coffee

  310. ples places are those small little

  311. coffee places that are not really kind

  312. of like the big coffee brand but if you

  313. allow me to talk about a brand of coffee

  314. that many people are familiar with and

  315. that is Starbucks and and on February

  316. 26th uh 2008 Starbucks actually closed

  317. across the US for several hours all of

  318. their Starbucks uh stores and they took

  319. 135,000 of their Baristas and they

  320. retrained each one of those Baristas on

  321. how to create a high quality cup of

  322. coffee this effort this effort and

  323. decision uh was led by the CEO at the

  324. time which was Howard Schultz and and

  325. and for for Howard this was a part of

  326. the company's uh intentional Focus to

  327. try to reshape the mindset and to

  328. realign uh our all the baras to

  329. understand that their core value was to

  330. deliver a premium cup of coffee uh this

  331. move came came at a time when the sales

  332. and the the uh the the um the stocks of

  333. Starbucks was actually in Decline and

  334. and many of the shareholders and the CEO

  335. at the time believe that the reason why

  336. they were in Decline is because they

  337. kind of went away from what they were

  338. initially known for and what was their

  339. true core purpose and and and what I

  340. love about this particular uh story is

  341. that it was a radical move that uh

  342. Howard Schultz did and it actually cost

  343. them obviously several thousands of of

  344. dollars in this time because for several

  345. hours there was no Revenue coming in but

  346. because of the move it also was a

  347. defining moment in the company's uh uh

  348. existence because it really kind of

  349. catapulted them back into you know

  350. prominence as being a place that really

  351. created an incredible experience and

  352. also a good cup of coffee when asked why

  353. would you shut this down why would you

  354. do this what's the reason for the

  355. shutdown Howard Schultz he gave three

  356. very important principles that I want to

  357. share with you number one he said that

  358. they wanted to focus on the quality they

  359. wanted to they wanted to refocus rather

  360. on the quality he said that Starbucks

  361. had had began to face a lot of criticism

  362. uh because the quality of the coffee had

  363. diminished some and the shift in the in

  364. the coffee and what had diminished uh

  365. what was they could equate to what

  366. diminished the coffee's uh quality was

  367. the fact that they were trying to pump

  368. out coffee really really fast and and

  369. they introduced the automatic uh

  370. automated EXP espresso machine and with

  371. the automated espresso machine while it

  372. was faster it took away the Artistry of

  373. the handcrafted coffee so they said hey

  374. you know what we want to kind of refocus

  375. on the quality the second thing that

  376. they wanted to do is they wanted to

  377. focus on the customer experience uh

  378. Schultz would he believed that uh

  379. Starbucks had lost its theater he lost

  380. his his um his it experience that

  381. connection with the customers and so

  382. that's what made Starbucks before the

  383. shut down so important so they wanted to

  384. revitalize the inore experience for

  385. every customer but then the third thing

  386. that he would say was that it was a

  387. cultural reset it was a cultural reset

  388. and by retraining every Barista the

  389. retraining was a symbolic gesture to

  390. remind every employee and every customer

  391. that will come to their commitment to

  392. their craft and a commitment to

  393. Excellence this was a very defining

  394. cultural moment also for Starbucks and I

  395. love what Schulz would say about the the

  396. uh shutdown this is a quote he said he

  397. says we will Elevate the Starbucks

  398. experience by both doing things

  399. differently and going back to the core

  400. of what made Starbucks special the

  401. uncompromising quality of our coffee and

  402. the connection we make with our

  403. customers this statement this statement

  404. was a a vision statement that really

  405. helped the company return back to Roots

  406. it helped the company focus on quality

  407. and authenticity of the experience and

  408. it served as a leadership reminder that

  409. the company must never get off course

  410. from their commitment to being excellent

  411. in all things it was a bold move that a

  412. Howard Schultz had actually made

  413. regarding uh this move and it was a

  414. strong defining leadership moment in his

  415. life similar to what Starbucks uh did in

  416. that moment also because I'm a person

  417. who believed that you should eat more

  418. chicken and I'm a fan of Chick-fil-A uh

  419. Chick-fil-A they have like three core uh

  420. principles to really kind of help

  421. reinforce this idea that they want you

  422. and I to be Raven fans and so uh

  423. Chick-fil-A just as a fun fact if in

  424. case you care or not you know

  425. Chick-fil-A uh they actually adopted

  426. Robert Green leafes Robert Green Leaf he

  427. has a a 1970 principal that he

  428. introduced to uh the social science is

  429. called student uh servant Hood

  430. leadership and so star uh Chick-fil-A

  431. uses uh Robert greenleaf's servant Hood

  432. leadership and a lot of the materials in

  433. which they they put out in the way that

  434. they train their employees but to make

  435. Raven fans through servant leadership uh

  436. Chick-fil-A they strive to do three

  437. things number one they want to execute

  438. operational excellence through meeting

  439. the quality requirements of their

  440. customers every day so they want they

  441. they want every day that they uh ask you

  442. to eat more chicken that there is and

  443. execution of excellence in all that they

  444. do the second thing that they want to do

  445. is they want to activate emotional

  446. connection marketing by investing in

  447. others they're they're trying to they're

  448. very intentional uh Chick-fil-A in

  449. investing in others but the third thing

  450. I love is that they want to always

  451. deliver a second mouth service by going

  452. above and beyond your expectations so

  453. what do these two companies have in

  454. common well if you really study them

  455. what they have in common is that

  456. Excellence is truly the standard and you

  457. see friends Excellence doesn't happen by

  458. accident it requires a committed focus

  459. and it requires consistency if you're

  460. going to be excellent in all things you

  461. must understand that that you have to

  462. have uh three things you got to have

  463. head heart and hustle being Excellence

  464. requires being excellent requires us to

  465. make sure that our head is in the game

  466. that we have a mind we have the mind in

  467. in this context we have the mind of

  468. Christ and that we're trying to be

  469. excellent in all things so we we have

  470. the mind of Christ and our head is in

  471. the game but then we have heart heart

  472. first we got a heart connection with God

  473. but then secondly we got a heart for

  474. God's people and so there is this heart

  475. that we have but then third if we're

  476. going to be ex in all things especially

  477. in this house there has to be a hustle

  478. there has to be grit that's within us to

  479. understand that going after lost people

  480. takes uh it's going to cost us some

  481. things it takes a sense of hustle making

  482. sure that we're excellent in all things

  483. from the parking lot to the platform

  484. means that there has to be a sense of

  485. hustle and so we have to understand if

  486. we're going to talk about Excellence

  487. being a standard then the over the

  488. overarching mindset that we must

  489. collectively say together is that if

  490. Excellence is our standard the

  491. mediocrity is not an

  492. option mediocrity is not an option we we

  493. we we can't subscribe to a mindset of

  494. mediocrity if we're going to be

  495. excellent in all things and so when we

  496. look at this text here and Jesus is

  497. talking talking about going the Second

  498. Mile what he's basically really

  499. introducing to us is what it means to

  500. have a kingdom mindset on how to be

  501. excellent in all things see we're called

  502. to be excellent in all that we do and

  503. the call to follow Jesus friends is not

  504. merely just doing what is required

  505. that's easy but if we're going to be

  506. fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ

  507. then we must embody excellence and

  508. embodying Excellence means that we

  509. reflect the character of Jesus and here

  510. in this text with Jesus with Jesus he

  511. challenges every follower who's

  512. listening he says listen I need you to

  513. believe I need you to live beyond the

  514. minimum stop stop doing what's

  515. comfortable if you're going to represent

  516. me then you got to live beyond the

  517. minimum he says you got to number two

  518. you got to rise above

  519. retaliation there's going to be moments

  520. in your life that you're flesh you're

  521. going to want to get at people but if

  522. you're going to exemplify and embody

  523. Excellence you got to rise up above

  524. retaliation but then he also talks about

  525. in this text that we're going to break

  526. down in a moment he says we got to

  527. pursue sacrificial love and grace see

  528. this is not a command that Jesus is

  529. making here at this por this portion of

  530. the of the sermon on the mouth it's not

  531. a command it's a calling and there is a

  532. difference see going the second mount

  533. isn't an act it's an expression of who

  534. we are as

  535. Believers also is who we call to

  536. be as a church and so there's four

  537. declarations four declaration that I

  538. believe that I I think is so important

  539. that we can extract from this particular

  540. text here in Matthew um and and I want

  541. to share these four declarations I think

  542. that they're not just significant for us

  543. here in this house I think that there

  544. there they're significance to us as as

  545. individuals who are following Jesus and

  546. so so there's four four declarations I

  547. want to share the first the first I'm

  548. going to give you and tie my shoe at the

  549. same time um is the Second Mile number

  550. one is a reflection of Christ's

  551. excellence

  552. and so I love this because what Jesus is

  553. doing because I'm going to fall

  554. um I love this because what Jesus is

  555. saying right here he's saying listen he

  556. said if if if the Second Mile reflection

  557. of his Excellence he's teaching this

  558. because he's saying Hey listen going the

  559. Second Mile means that you have to

  560. oppose this Messianic law that says an i

  561. for an i and a two for a two he calls us

  562. to to ex uh to share radical love

  563. instead instead of trying to retaliate

  564. he says go the Second Mile because going

  565. the second mile is a reflection of who

  566. he is see Jesus calls his followers to

  567. transcend this standard of Justice by

  568. rejecting personal

  569. retaliation he goes on to really kind of

  570. talk about the importance ladies and

  571. gentlemen this is where it gets a little

  572. it's get a little funny because he talks

  573. about the importance of living a

  574. countercultural life he talks about the

  575. importance of adopting a countercultural

  576. mindset and ethic because what we know

  577. is when he says don't resist an evildoer

  578. and he talks about how you know if

  579. somebody slaps you he says listen your

  580. your job is not to

  581. retaliate your job is to refuse to re uh

  582. to to uh seek revenge for anyone who's

  583. wronged you and let's be honest how many

  584. of us have a hard time doing that

  585. because we want to get people told we

  586. want to let people know oh I know what

  587. you said about

  588. me and and we we love we love Facebook

  589. bullies being the people who will get

  590. online and just go to type and let me

  591. tell you

  592. something and what Jesus is saying Hey

  593. listen as followers of Jesus Christ

  594. you're called to live countercultural to

  595. that that it isn't about trying to get

  596. people told it's about having an

  597. authentic witness in front of the people

  598. that you are interacting with and that's

  599. hard because we love to get in our our

  600. flesh but he's saying hey we got to

  601. adopt the mind of Christ I love what

  602. Paul says in Philippians 25 and 7 he

  603. says this adopt the same attitude as

  604. that of Christ

  605. Jesus who possed in the form of God did

  606. not consider equality with God as

  607. something to be exploited instead he

  608. emptied himself by assuming the form of

  609. a

  610. servant so when we talk about going the

  611. Second Mile going the Second Mile starts

  612. within of saying Hey listen we recognize

  613. that Jesus ultimately he did the

  614. greatest Second Mile he gave us the

  615. greatest Second Mile example when he

  616. died on calvary's Cross so he went he

  617. went the Second Mile so when Excellence

  618. friends when Excellence is our standard

  619. you know what happens we choose Grace

  620. over

  621. grudges when Excellence our standards we

  622. choose service over self when Excellence

  623. is our standard we choose love over

  624. limits and as we reflect Jesus we show

  625. the world that our standard is not based

  626. on human effort but our our standard is

  627. based on Divine

  628. transformation that we are we are men

  629. and women who are we're saying Hey

  630. listen you know what I'mma let you have

  631. it because I don't want anything to

  632. damage my

  633. witness what happens you flip somebody

  634. off cut somebody off cut somebody out at

  635. the at the gas station and then next

  636. next week they're visiting the

  637. church and and God with a sense of humor

  638. allows y'all to sit next to one

  639. another and you sit up here Lord I Lift

  640. Your Name on High but you just gave

  641. somebody the middle

  642. finger and so we must understand that

  643. when we think about this

  644. idea of of of of not retaliating and and

  645. and when ex is our standard it starts

  646. with our willingness to say God I want

  647. to reflect your character in everything

  648. every aspect of my life CU then that

  649. moves us to number two number two is

  650. simply this that the second mile is a

  651. mark of our identity see the second mile

  652. is not optional it is fundamental

  653. because it defines who we are as

  654. Believers it defines us as Believers

  655. individually but it will ultimately

  656. Define us collectively as the body of

  657. Christ see the first mile is just simply

  658. an obligation but the second mile is our

  659. identity and it reveals that we

  660. represent a higher Kingdom I love with

  661. first Peter 2 and 9 says it says but you

  662. are a chosen race a royal priesthood a

  663. holy nation a people for his possession

  664. so that you may declare the Praises of

  665. him of who called you out of Darkness

  666. Into His Marvelous

  667. Light can I tell you friends we go the

  668. extra mile not because we have to we go

  669. the extra mile because it's who we are

  670. it's our

  671. identity and when we understand who we

  672. are as Christ followers can I just tell

  673. you there should be some things that

  674. should shift within you as a follower of

  675. Jesus Christ there are some things that

  676. you should just not do anymore or if you

  677. do it it should be harder for you to do

  678. it because there's a spirit of

  679. Contrition that is within you now when I

  680. was in the world hey I got it went

  681. before before my encounter with the

  682. gospel before I had a life altering

  683. situation when I went from Death To Life

  684. yes I operated this way but when I cross

  685. the threshold from Death To Life there

  686. should be some change in my life

  687. so I should easily want to go the Second

  688. Mile because it is my identity is who I

  689. am see when the world expects us to do

  690. the bare minimum friends we are called

  691. to exceed

  692. expectations going the Second Mile means

  693. forgiving somebody who doesn't deserve

  694. your

  695. forgiveness going the Second Mile means

  696. serving when you feel like you don't

  697. have time go on the extra mile means

  698. given in a very sacrificial moment see

  699. see going to Second Mile friends it

  700. reflects our identity as follows of

  701. Jesus but it also impacts and

  702. authenticate our

  703. witness and so man you got to be willing

  704. to go to Second and sometimes it just

  705. doesn't feel

  706. good because we got this thing called a

  707. flesh we have to understand that going

  708. to Second Mile friends it is the mark of

  709. our identity but number three going to

  710. Second Mile it's the testimony it's a

  711. testimony to the world see the second

  712. mile is where people notice that we're

  713. different when we go to Second Mile it's

  714. at that point where they know that we're

  715. different because people expect us maybe

  716. or they they might expect or desire hey

  717. you want at least go one mile but when

  718. you go the Second Mile that's how you

  719. differentiate differentiate yourself

  720. between the world and Kingdom living and

  721. so it is our testimony to the

  722. world it is our way that we live let our

  723. light shine is the way that God becomes

  724. undeniable to lost people I love I love

  725. what Matthew says in Matthew 5:16 it

    Matthew 5:16

  726. says this in the same way let your light

  727. shine before others so that they may see

  728. your good works and give glory to your

  729. father in

  730. Heaven we think about our testimony can

  731. I just ask the question what kind of

  732. testimony are you presenting to people

  733. outside of this space right

  734. here what does what does your life look

  735. like outside the confines of this church

  736. because when we go the Second Mile what

  737. happens is we we give love instead of

  738. Vengeance when we go the Second Mile

  739. there is generosity that we give instead

  740. of being greedy when we go the second

  741. mile is service instead of

  742. selfishness the world needs to see not

  743. more divisive rhetoric people the world

  744. needs to see men and women who will

  745. stand boldly on the way in the word of

  746. God and live their lives accordingly to

  747. scripture that's what it means for for

  748. excellence to be our standard the second

  749. mile is the witness of the Excellence of

  750. God's kingdom friends whether you're in

  751. the marketplace whether you're in the

  752. nonprofit World here at the

  753. church that we are called to go the

  754. Second Mile because as followers of

  755. Jesus Christ regardless the context

  756. that you work in the second mile is

  757. where evangelism becomes

  758. practical it's at that moment when we go

  759. to Second M now that's that's how we be

  760. Evangelistic we think we think that

  761. being Evangelistic is somewhere you got

  762. a little Romans Road Track you know you

  763. going from door to door hey did you know

  764. Jesus was died on for your sins that's

  765. that's not how you always witness and

  766. evangelize your life the way you live

  767. your life before people is a form of

  768. evangelism your willingness to go the

  769. Second Mile even when you don't feel

  770. like it is a form of evangelism I was

  771. coming in last night uh from Birmingham

  772. here and and you know I was exhausted

  773. I've been traveling a bit and so I got

  774. on and if you ever flown and you've had

  775. you you know that person is sitting next

  776. to you and you just know oh they're

  777. going to be a

  778. talker and and I sat next to this guy

  779. and I just felt it I was like oh gosh so

  780. I'm be honest you guys we're family I'm

  781. going to tell the truth Shane the devil

  782. I'm going to give my testimony on this

  783. one and uh or just confess my sins

  784. actually and um and so I didn't want to

  785. talk to the dude like I was tired man so

  786. what I did was what every good Christian

  787. does who don't want to talk I put on my

  788. headphones and um and you then I try to

  789. act like I was I was watching a movie

  790. and stuff like I was so I had the whole

  791. don't talk to me dude Vibes you know

  792. what I mean but he didn't get it like he

  793. kept talking and so I'm like God this is

  794. going like how do I tell this guy

  795. lovingly to shut up you know and so but

  796. but then I was

  797. convicted and I'm so serious Lord I was

  798. like how are you going to preach about

  799. going to Second Mile not even willing to

  800. have a conversation with the dude on the

  801. plane I was like well God can you give

  802. me another example of how or you

  803. know so so so I was like fine take the

  804. head I'm going be honest I started the

  805. conversation with an attitude I'm just

  806. be

  807. honest but the more we talked

  808. Mo I began to hear his

  809. story and then here he's going through

  810. went through a bad layoff at work he's

  811. in the midst of a trous marriage that he

  812. doesn't know if it's going to work or

  813. not and in that moment while we were

  814. there in

  815. there Lord used that moment for me to

  816. minister to him and a way that was

  817. really I just I I'm be honest I didn't

  818. feel like it at the time but gosh man

  819. I'm glad that I did so we land get off

  820. everything calls me Jeff Jeff middle MCO

  821. man it's really award comes around she

  822. like man gives me like it was a bro hug

  823. but it was a I was you know I'm not I

  824. don't know you like that you know what I

  825. mean and uh and it's like man but he's

  826. like thank you so much man I needed that

  827. conversation sometimes going a second

  828. mile man is

  829. uncomfortable sometimes it's

  830. inconvenient sometimes it's going to

  831. even cost us a little bit but it's

  832. always worth it it's always worth it

  833. which leads me to number four

  834. but number four is this that the Second

  835. Mile requires a heart of

  836. sacrifice it it requires a heart of

  837. sacrifice see see going to Second Mile

  838. is not just this casual lasair type of

  839. mindset that we have no it's going to

  840. cost you some stuff that's what I'm

  841. talking about the

  842. hustle and so we have to understand that

  843. man when we talk about going the Second

  844. Mile we we have to understand that it is

  845. a sacrificial

  846. experience that's why Paul says in

  847. Romans 12 and 1 he says this he says

  848. therefore brothers and sisters in the

  849. view of the mercies of God I urge you to

  850. present your bodies as a Living

  851. Sacrifice holy and pleasing to God this

  852. is your true

  853. worship see excellence in the Second

  854. Mile friends is not about perfection

  855. it's about total

  856. surrender it's about

  857. surrendering our Liv surrendering our

  858. will our way to God

  859. it's about giving ourselves fully to God

  860. and trusting him in every aspect of our

  861. lives and so here is the question I want

  862. to just pose for us

  863. today it's kind of a twofold question

  864. it's an individual question and then a

  865. corporate question individually my

  866. question is this what does the Second

  867. Mile look like in your life right now

  868. what what are some areas in your life

  869. very PR speaking what are some areas of

  870. life you say hey man this is what it

  871. looks like in my life to go to Second

  872. Mount that's individual question but

  873. then collectively friends I'm curious

  874. what would it look

  875. like if this was a church that was known

  876. we were known for being the Second Mile

  877. church I look for when I go to

  878. chick-fil-et every time I go to

  879. Chick-fil-A regardless of what I get you

  880. know more so than the meal I'm I'm

  881. experiencing I'm ganging you know what I

  882. look forward to the most I look forward

  883. to the phrase at the end of me take um

  884. having my order taken when they say what

  885. my pleasure you see

  886. that it is in their manual that they

  887. have to make that phrase even if you're

  888. nasty and rude to them even if you

  889. change your order 14 million

  890. times it still has to be their pleasure

  891. cuz I'm that dude I'm like Hey listen

  892. I want you know a 8 count nugget meal

  893. and I need my nuggets really hot fresh

  894. extra crispy I want my fries no salt on

  895. because I want them to be fresh and can

  896. I get a half and half sweet unsweet tea

  897. and can I get just a pinch more sweet

  898. than I do

  899. unsweet and they say my pleasure like

  900. yeah so

  901. but the the the truth of the matter is

  902. man will we be individuals in a church

  903. who will have this second mouth

  904. mindset so someone has wronged you go

  905. the Second Mile and forgive

  906. them if there's someone who owes you

  907. something go to Second Mile if

  908. possible let it go if there is someone

  909. who they have done something to you that

  910. man it's like man I just really I want

  911. to give them the business man would you

  912. just go to Second Mile and and let it go

  913. so what does going to Second Mile look

  914. like for you and then also what does it

  915. look like for us as a church friends I

  916. believe with everything within me that

  917. as we step into this new season of

  918. ministry going the Second Mile and that

  919. really becoming a core value what we

  920. believe here in our church it's not on

  921. Pastor Luke alone it's not on the elders

  922. alone it's not on the church staff alone

  923. it's on all of us

  924. collectively to do what needs to be done

  925. so the Kingdom of Heaven can be

  926. Advanced so how do we live out the

  927. Second Mile

  928. mindset as the body of Christ we're

  929. we're called to rise above a Spirit of

  930. mediocrity we're called to do more than

  931. just the minimum we are called to live a

  932. life of Excellence because we serve an

  933. excellent

  934. savior second my

  935. mindset it's not about earning the favor

  936. of God that's we don't do it because

  937. we're trying to earn the favor of God we

  938. do it because we're trying to reflect

  939. the love of Jesus to others that we come

  940. in contact with so it's not about doing

  941. more it's about being more like Christ

  942. so will that be our prayer today will

  943. that be our prayer tomorrow will that be

  944. our prayer as we step into this new

  945. season I love what Galatians 6 and9 says

  946. is this it says this let us not get

  947. tired of doing good for we will reap at

  948. the proper time if we don't give

  949. up let's not get weary and well dooing

  950. because in due time we're going to reap

  951. the Harvest what I love about this text

  952. here in Galatians is due time doesn't

  953. say hey do good today and you'll reap

  954. the Harvest tomorrow do good tomorrow

  955. you'll reap the Harvest 1 of March says

  956. in due time which means God's

  957. timing and so will we not look to have

  958. this transactional relationship between

  959. us and God but will we commit to having

  960. a transformational Encounter With

  961. Jesus that dictates and determines how

  962. we move how we act how we love and how

  963. we live because being a follower of

  964. Jesus Christ is not about Behavior

  965. modifications it's about a heart

  966. transformation that takes place so if

  967. Excellence is going to be our

  968. standard it starts right here in the

  969. heart until we're willing to rise above

  970. a spirit of mediocrity we will always be

  971. a people and a church that is middle of

  972. the roow and all right and I don't know

  973. about you but I ain't interested in

  974. being all right cuz it takes no effort

  975. to be all right you can roll out of your

  976. bed and be a person who does the bare

  977. minimum you can roll out of your bed and

  978. be a person who lives in the spirit of

  979. mediocrity but can I just tell you

  980. Church no the Lord is calling you to be

  981. excellent in all

  982. things with your personal life how you

  983. Steward your life life be excellent how

  984. you navigate relationships be excellent

  985. how you operate at work or at school be

  986. excellent how you deal with seasons of

  987. unemployment be

  988. excellent but most importantly how you

  989. live and Steward your life as a fully

  990. devoted father of Jesus be

  991. excellent so I want to close us out in a

  992. time of prayer and here's what I'm going

  993. to

  994. ask the altar is open for any who

  995. struggle

  996. with a specific issue that is your

  997. hindrance from going to Second Mile

  998. here's an example Jeff I hear you saying

  999. I need to let go and forgive but you

1000. don't know what they did to me and you

1001. don't know the impact they had on my

1002. life I get it you're right but I do know

1003. holding on to it is not going to be

1004. beneficial to your heart and your soul

1005. your spirit and the only way that you

1006. can go the Second Mile in the other

1007. areas of your life until you is that you

1008. got to go to Second Mile in this area of

1009. life and so maybe the Second Mile

1010. mindset starts with you come into the

1011. Altar and a symbolic posture of God I'm

1012. surrendering all I'm laying it right

1013. here on the altar I am letting it go

1014. that's your second mile so whatever it

1015. is that you are dealing with man

1016. whatever the struggle the Second Mile

1017. struggle like the first mile I got it

1018. but going that second mile is a struggle

1019. if that's you man I want to pray and

1020. then the altar be open for

  1021. you church I believe

1022. that when Excellence becomes our

1023. corporate standard we move from being a

1024. church to being that church let's pray

1025. God thank you so much for being so good

1026. to us thank you for these amazing men

1027. and women who I call brothers and
