  2. it is great to see you and to be here

  3. with you all this morning I am so

  4. grateful that we are gathered together

  5. in this house and I'm grateful because

  6. today we are concluding a collection of

  7. conversations that we've been in over

  8. the course of the past several weeks

  9. that we have been calling the

  10. Renaissance and the Renaissance has

  11. simply been a collection and a

  12. discussion that is fixated and focused

  13. on the idea of Revival and

  14. revitalization not just happening within

  15. one individual but within a group of

  16. individuals what we believe we are

  17. seeing is happening in our church yes

  18. and so I have told you many times over

  19. the course of these weeks that I've

  20. stolen this title from a Fame period of

  21. time in human history where we saw that

  22. the Renaissance was a time where there

  23. was Revival and revitalization in things

  24. like art and literature and Science and

  25. even in the church to where it ended up

  26. shaping the culture of Europe between

  27. the 14th and the 16th centuries but

  28. probably more predominantly for us is

  29. the fact that Renaissance is quite

  30. literally defined as Revival or renewed

  31. interest in something so we believe that

  32. we're seeing Revival and renewed

  33. interest in what God is doing throughout

  34. the world in the Lord's church and that

  35. we also see something beautiful and

  36. unmistakable that is happening among the

  37. saints that are gathering in this

  38. location in our very midst and so I have

  39. mentioned over the course of the past

  40. seven weeks that we are going to be

  41. transitioning the church's name from

  42. LifeBridge Church to key Church

  43. officially on September the 7th and

  44. there's a lot of fun and exciting things

  45. that coincide with that but probably uh

  46. one of the things that we wanted to make

  47. sure that we were going to do and not

  48. just kind of leave it out there hanging

  49. is talk through seven weeks and seven

  50. subsequent values of who it is that we

  51. believe the Lord is leading us to be

  52. that fall in line with his character and

  53. the church that he's called us to become

  54. and so I know that you all could recite

  55. them off the top of your head right now

  56. and I'm going to call on seven of you at

  57. Rand

  58. so I'm kidding uh but those would be

  59. Jesus is our purpose that belonging is

  60. our heart that stewardship is our

  61. responsibility that Excellence is our

  62. standard that passion is our posture

  63. that bringing is our joy and now finally

  64. what we're talking about here this

  65. morning is that worship is our way which

  66. could feel somewhat open-ended and it's

  67. intentional it's open-ended because I

  68. think for many people when we think

  69. about worship and I would be guilty of

  70. this as well to some degree we can often

  71. just tend to think about the moments

  72. that we spend gathering together

  73. corporately in this place where we are

  74. also all singing at the same time

  75. corporately lifting praise to God the

  76. Father Son and Holy Spirit and what we

  77. see is that often times we can end up

  78. then leaving the rest of our lives just

  79. kind of as like meah like we don't we

  80. don't really think about it as worship

  81. but the truth of the matter is that all

  82. of who we are all of what we have our

  83. entire life and being is a Living

  84. Sacrifice to the Lord and that all of

  85. our life is worship regardless of season

  86. and Circumstance and so what I want to

  87. do is I want you to get with me in Acts

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  88. chapter 16 acts 16 we're going to be in

  89. verse uh

  90. 25-34 acts 16 verse 25 through 34 we've

    Acts 16:25–34

  91. got a lot to get through together here

  92. this morning and so uh y'all there with

  93. me y'all ready for the word it says this

  94. about midnight Paul and Silas were

  95. praying and singing singing hymns to God

  96. and the prisoners were listening to them

  97. and suddenly there was such a violent

  98. earthquake that the foundations of the

  99. jail were shaken and immediately all the

  100. doors were opened and everyone's chains

  101. came loose when the Jailer woke up and

  102. saw the doors of the prison standing

  103. open he drew his sword and was going to

  104. kill himself since he thought the

  105. prisoners had escaped but Paul called

  106. out in a loud vo don't harm yourself

  107. because we're all here the Jailer called

  108. for lights rushed in and fell down

  109. trembling before Paul and Silas and he

  110. escorted them out and said s what must I

  111. do to be saved they said believe in the

  112. Lord Jesus and you will be saved you and

  113. your household let me just go ahead and

  114. get ahead of that right there uh they're

  115. not saying that you can be saved by

  116. proxy but we see that they're actually

  117. going to preach the word to everybody in

  118. the home here uh and it says in verse 32

  119. and they spoke the word of the Lord to

  120. him along with everyone in his house and

  121. he took them the same hour of the night

  122. and washed their wounds and right away

  123. he and all his family were baptized and

  124. he brought them into his house set a

  125. meal before them and rejoiced because he

  126. had come to believe in god with his

  127. entire household let's pray

  128. together uh Lord I'm so grateful to be

  129. gathered together with your people in

  130. this house but Lord I I I just want like

  131. a fire to burn in this place I just want

  132. you to absolutely have your way here God

  133. I don't know all of the situations and

  134. Seasons that people find themselves in

  135. right now but Lord I know that you are

  136. absolutely required in every single one

  137. of them and so Lord I don't know if

  138. there's anyone in here that's been

  139. neglecting you in this season or someone

  140. that finds themselves in a difficult

  141. circumstance that makes it hard for them

  142. to feel like you're present or that you

  143. care or that you love them or any of

  144. those things for everything in between

  145. Lord would you just absolutely ravage

  146. this place by the power of your Holy

  147. Spirit to capture the minds and the

  148. hearts of men and women that find

  149. themselves gathered here today maybe

  150. some of them just because it's habit but

  151. maybe some of us because it's out of

  152. need but all of us because we believe

  153. that only you can do what you can do and

  154. that is save we have experienced it but

  155. Lord I ask that we would tangibly see

  156. your hand at work in this house today

  157. and that we would go out of here

  158. glorifying you Lord we love you we

  159. praise you and we thank you we ask these

  160. things in Jesus name

  161. amen well what we see in this text and

  162. what we can understand from what we've

  163. just read is that Paul and Silas uh are

  164. imprisoned and we know that uh primarily

  165. because what we see in that first verse

  166. in verse 25 uh is that it's going to say

  167. that other prisoners were listening to

  168. them right in prison it says in Acts 16:

  169. 25 that Paul and Silas were praying and

  170. singing hymns to God and the prisoners

  171. were listening and so I think we all

  172. realize that what we've just read is a

  173. profound passage one of my personal

  174. favorites in all of scripture uh and yet

  175. at the same time if we're not familiar

  176. we probably need a little bit more

  177. context for what is happening and I

  178. think there's really two primary

  179. questions that we need to ask and

  180. evaluate to have a firm grasp on where

  181. we are so that we can where the Lord is

  182. taking us and those two questions are

  183. this where have Paul and Silas been that

  184. they find themselves located in prison

  185. in Philippi but then the second question

  186. and probably more important would be and

  187. what have they done in order to land in

  188. prison where have they been and what

  189. have they done to be in prison in this

  190. location and so where have they been I

  191. think we have a map here uh Paul is on

  192. his second missionary journey and we see

  193. that Paul second missionary journey

  194. begins out of Jerusalem he's been a part

  195. of the Jerusalem Council he is now

  196. carrying all that he's learned and all

  197. that they've discussed there North and

  198. we see that as he moves North he'll

  199. start to continue West and it's in lisra

  200. that we see that he's going to end up

  201. joining with Silas after that we see

  202. that he's going to travel through the

  203. region of galatia and friia and then we

  204. see he'll continue West towards Mia and

  205. we see that he will continue even

  206. further west and land in a location

  207. called traz on the coast now traz is a

  208. location where we see something pivotal

  209. is going to happen for Paul Paul is

  210. going to have a dream one night while

  211. they reach their location in traz and as

  212. he does there is a man that is yelling

  213. at him that he needs to get to Macedonia

  214. and help the people there and so Paul

  215. and Silas take this as a dream that's

  216. been given to them by the Lord and in an

  217. act of obedience and stepping further

  218. west into the direction that they've

  219. been called we see that they will end up

  220. sailing from traz to a small location

  221. there called sethra they will go to

  222. neapolis there on the coast and a little

  223. bit more Inland towards Philippi real

  224. places real cities real locations that

  225. you can know and read about and

  226. historically are verifiable that we see

  227. that that's where Paul goes and when he

  228. gets to Philippi things are amazing at

  229. first Paul and Silas get to Philippi

  230. they're having a good old time they're

  231. like you know what we should we should

  232. pray right now we need to find ourselves

  233. a nice little peaceful river that we can

  234. pray next to Paul and Silas go and find

  235. this River and they're praying there and

  236. we see that as they get to this River

  237. there's a group of women that are there

  238. and instead of praying immediately what

  239. they're going to do is they're going to

  240. end up proclaiming the gospel to these

  241. women in this European location that

  242. they haven't visited quite yet and what

  243. we see is that there is a significant

  244. woman that is among them that will

  245. become the first convert in all of

  246. Europe a woman named Lydia Lydia is

  247. significant because she accepts Jesus

  248. Christ as her Lord and Savior after

  249. hearing the good news that she's a

  250. sinner in need of a savior and that God

  251. sent his own son in Jesus Christ to take

  252. her place on the cross that his blood

  253. covers her sins she she's like that's

  254. good news I need that I'm putting my

  255. faith and trust in him but she's going

  256. to go further than that Lydia is a woman

  257. who is actually an unbelievably wealthy

  258. businesswoman what we're told is that

  259. she is a seller of purple which maybe

  260. doesn't sound that exciting here today

  261. or sound all that lucrative but to get

  262. purple dye back in the day would have

  263. been a very difficult thing to do and it

  264. was something that was seen as Royal so

  265. to be able to purchase that would have

  266. been a business that would had been done

  267. with people that are exclusively buying

  268. product and so we see that all of these

  269. people will end up purchasing purple and

  270. she's got this wealthy business and

  271. she's going to Leverage The Wealth that

  272. she has built and she's going to do so

  273. to open up her home that's big enough to

  274. to get a church in there to kind of

  275. start that Philippian church and then we

  276. see that also scholars believe she is

  277. going to help fund Paul's Ministry from

  278. here on out probably for the rest of his

  279. life uh what we see is that even uh

  280. recently and I just feel like this has

  281. to be said uh recently there's been

  282. excavation that's been done in the area

  283. and there's been inscriptions of people

  284. saying that there were GI of purple hard

  285. to know if Lydia was a part of that

  286. specifically but what we know is that

  287. she was wealthy she's the first convert

  288. in Europe and she leverages all that she

  289. has after putting her faith in Christ

  290. for the Gospel of Jesus Christ that his

  291. name and Renown might go forward

  292. throughout the Earth so I say all that

  293. to say we get to Philippi and it looks

  294. amazing but it's not just amazing there

  295. for the whole time we see that they're

  296. going to hit a couple of snags and so we

  297. see that as we continue in Acts chapter

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  298. 16 and we're going to back up a little

  299. bit to verse 16 and 17 and it says this

  300. once as we were on our way to prayer a

  301. slave girl met us who had a Spirit by

  302. which she predicted the future she made

  303. a large profit from her owners for her

  304. owners by fortune telling and as she

  305. followed Paul and us she cried out these

  306. men are proclaiming to you a way of

  307. Salvation and are Servants of the most

  308. high God so this doesn't seem that bad

  309. off the bat right things have been going

  310. amazing but now we see that this is

  311. going to turn into a struggle it's going

  312. to turn into a struggle because what

  313. we've seen so far is that in Philippi

  314. there's been this incredible witness to

  315. conversion but now we see that they're

  316. going to have to deal with demonic

  317. possession in this young girl and it

  318. will say in verse 18 and 19 she did this

  319. for many days and Paul was greatly

  320. annoyed which is amazing and it says

  321. then turning to the spirit he said I

  322. command you in the name of Jesus Christ

  323. to come out of her and it came out right

  324. away when her owners had realized that

  325. their hope of profit was gone They

  326. seized Paul and Silas and dragged them

  327. into the marketplace to the authorities

  328. so first things first Paul's like you

  329. and I he is annoyed which is amazing

  330. Paul is listening to this girl and

  331. probably on day one he's like it's fine

  332. she's yapping away and then all of a

  333. sudden she just she just keeps doing it

  334. and Paul's like stop it stop talking I

  335. don't want to hear from you anymore get

  336. out of her and we see that he cast this

  337. demon out of her and when that happens

  338. it starts to lead in in to the other

  339. question that we had that is now being

  340. answered what have they done in order to

  341. land in prison well they just cost the

  342. owners of this girl that's been

  343. demonically possessed quite a bit of

  344. cash that this girl has been suffering

  345. through demonic possession and her

  346. owners have been using it as spiritual

  347. prostitution in order to make a fortune

  348. off of her and so we see that then she

  349. is going to be dragged uh that they are

  350. going to drag Paul and Silas rather into

  351. the city into the city of Philippi and

  352. they will come before the legal

  353. officials what's described as the

  354. magistrates and we see there that they

  355. are going to be accused of disturbing

  356. the city now we don't know how much

  357. money Paul and Silas ended up C uh uh

  358. making these people lose as a result of

  359. casting this demon out of this girl but

  360. it had to be quite a bit because now

  361. even but back in the day in particular

  362. nobody was going through with any kind

  363. of prosecution unless you had quite a

  364. bit of money in order to make it happen

  365. it was unbelievably expensive and so we

  366. see that they had quite a bit of wealth

  367. as a result of this girl's POS

  368. possession and now they didn't see any

  369. kind of prophet coming in so they bring

  370. Paul and Silas before the legal

  371. officials that they're accused of

  372. seriously disturbing the city and that's

  373. something that Romans didn't like at all

  374. and so as Paul and Silas are walting

  375. into the city among all of these Romans

  376. that are there they start to realize

  377. that there's a lot of prejudice that's

  378. being shown their way because all of

  379. these people that are a part of this

  380. Roman Colony aren't necessarily huge

  381. fans of the Jews and so we see that an

  382. anti-semitic mob will break out and we

  383. see that now all all of a sudden not

  384. only is this anti-semitic mob going to

  385. break out but it's going to cause them

  386. to not be able to have any kind of

  387. official trial or investigation into the

  388. charges that have been levied against

  389. them if they had what they would find

  390. out is that both Paul and Silas are

  391. Roman citizens but they don't even get

  392. that chance they are taken they have

  393. their backs and all of their clothing

  394. stripped so that they can then be

  395. flogged and then they're thrown into the

  396. innermost part of a Philippian jail and

  397. we see that their feet are put in stocks

  398. no investigation into the charges that

  399. have been brought against them and no

  400. Escape is possible and now it says in

  401. Acts 25 with all of that as a beautiful

  402. backdrop for us that in Acts 16: 25

  403. about midnight Paul and Silas were

  404. praying and singing hymns to God and the

  405. prisoners were listening to them I don't

  406. know what your response would be to that

  407. but let me just that that wouldn't be it

  408. for me that that wouldn't be my response

  409. right what we see is they have endured

  410. and suffered on a multitude of levels we

  411. see that they've had false accusations

  412. that have been levied against them we

  413. see that you've had these racially

  414. motivated mobs that have been bombarding

  415. them you see that they've also found

  416. themselves flogged in this moment and so

  417. their backs are beaten and lacerated on

  418. a really uncomfortable level and they've

  419. been thrown into the innermost part of

  420. the prison and their feet have been

  421. secured in stocks and we see that now at

  422. midnight they are praying and singing

  423. hymns to

  424. God praying here is exactly what you

  425. would think it is it means definitive

  426. aim conscious aim towards God but

  427. probably what's more interesting is that

  428. the word that's used here is not talking

  429. about uh specific prayer you might enter

  430. into prayer for lots of different

  431. reasons you're excited you're joyful

  432. you're rejoicing uh you you could be

  433. someone that that's down or in need or

  434. scared there's lots of different reasons

  435. that you could enter into prayer but the

  436. word that's used here is is saying that

  437. it's the totality of prayer that's

  438. happening here everything that you could

  439. think of that goes into prayer at all

  440. that's what they're doing here that it's

  441. adoration that it's confession that it's

  442. submission that it's supplication that

  443. ultimately it is Praise of their

  444. glorious King that is happening here in

  445. this moment and so what we see is that

  446. it says they're praying and then it says

  447. also that they're singing and singing is

  448. this celebratory praise that's happening

  449. it says they're singing hymns which is

  450. just a song of Praise so they're praying

  451. and they're singing they're worshiping

  452. Augustine had three beautiful clarifiers

  453. for what

  454. A Hymn actually is I know that we have

  455. thoughts whenever we hear hymns uh being

  456. thrown out there but a hymn according to

  457. Augustine is something that must be sung

  458. it must be praised and it must be to God

  459. and we see that that's what they're

  460. doing here

  461. praying and singing worshiping that in a

  462. Midnight Hour they are offering up

  463. through prayer and praise an attitude of

  464. gratitude in less than ideal

  465. circumstances and I got to tell you I

  466. have spent all week just in prayer and

  467. tears going Lord what pours out of me

  468. when I'm under

  469. pressure what is it that leaks that

  470. pours out of you when you're under

  471. pressure in the middle of less than

  472. ideal circumstances what does that look

  473. like and I thought about Jesus hanging

  474. on the cross and what do Jesus do in

  475. that moment we see that he's going to

  476. forgive his adversaries he's going to

  477. pray for his enemies he's going to

  478. instruct that someone take care of his

  479. mother we see that Paul and Silas with

  480. their backs fogged and raw skin

  481. everywhere that in that moment they

  482. don't curse men they bless God we see

  483. that as they have their feet in stocks

  484. sore as a result of how uncomfortable

  485. this situation is overall we see that

  486. they're going to be in a situation where

  487. they're not going to Grumble within but

  488. they're going to praise out loud and

  489. what I'm fascinated by is that it says

  490. about midnight and it's not just saying

  491. hey you should know the time because

  492. time yay for time but rather it's

  493. letting you know the time because it's

  494. dark uh they're

  495. singing they're not looking at Himel

  496. they don't have projectors they don't

  497. have led screens they don't have

  498. anything where they can see something

  499. and they're just kind of singing that

  500. but rather in The Darkest Hour of the

  501. night in the dark night of their soul in

  502. less than ideal circumstances we see

  503. that there are Psalms that they have

  504. memorized in Scripture that they've

  505. internalized and believed how many of

  506. you know that we sing what we see in the

  507. day but we sing what we believe in the

  508. night and it's in the dark night of your

  509. soul that you are going to find yourself

  510. realizing I better have some scripture

  511. in here that I am locked into because

  512. when my circumstances say that God's not

  513. good I can testify to the fact that his

  514. character is always certain that I'm

  515. always going to worship and it's not

  516. going to be dependent on what's going on

  517. in my life it will always be there so

  518. long as I have breath in my lungs and

  519. what we see is that it says they're

  520. praying and singing and the prisoners

  521. were

  522. listening the prisoners are

  523. listening Paul and

  524. Silas are praying and they're singing

  525. hymns to

  526. God and the people in prison they're not

  527. they're not just hearing it they're

  528. listening to it they're not not

  529. dismissive hearing but intent listening

  530. that's what the word means to act on

  531. something to heed it to pay close

  532. attention to it to engage it to consider

  533. everything that is being said in this

  534. moment that they are listening and they

  535. are mindblown because they know these

  536. men have just been flogged they're put

  537. in the innermost part of the prison they

  538. hear Paul and Silas from deep inside the

  539. prison while they're on the outside they

  540. find themselves closest to the door but

  541. they can hear songs coming from the

  542. people that are on the innermost part of

  543. the prison knowing that their feet are

  544. secure in stocks and they're wondering

  545. In This Moment how can these men have

  546. their feet Shackled and sing at the same

  547. time and I need you to know that there

  548. is an unsaved world out there that is

  549. listening to everything that comes out

  550. of your mouth and there is something

  551. about the unsaved world world that is

  552. fascinated by the fact that when you are

  553. in circumstances that should bring less

  554. than rejoicing out of your mouth when

  555. they hear you talking about the comfort

  556. that you feel within them they are

  557. curious about who the comforter is they

  558. want to know who are you talking about

  559. how can you say that you're in worse

  560. circumstances than I am and yet your joy

  561. is better than anything I've ever

  562. experienced outside of here how is that

  563. possible it's like the great prayer

  564. Warrior George Mueller once said George

  565. Mueller said that uh trials

  566. are food for your faith to feed

  567. on Trials are food for your faith to

  568. feed on and I think we all understand

  569. that when you are in the Dark Night of

  570. the Soul when you're in a difficult

  571. circumstance you know that yes the way

  572. that I rejoice in My Worship in the

  573. middle of this it's inspirational for

  574. other people but how many of us know

  575. it's formational for us there's

  576. something that God's doing in that in us

  577. and I think if you've walked with the

  578. Lord for any length of time then you

  579. know this to be true that your faith

  580. gets fatigued when it's starved on the

  581. smooth and easy diets of this world the

  582. filth that this world has to offer but

  583. we live in a world right now that is

  584. absolutely committed to our ease and

  585. efficiency and speed and as someone who

  586. loves ease and efficiency we can't go

  587. fast enough we can't make this easy

  588. enough I want it to be easy and fast and

  589. efficient on every single level so

  590. hypocrite number one right here but how

  591. many of us know the whole world is built

  592. for us to just Coast I I I mean we got

  593. air conditioning praise God for that

  594. one I'm just saying I'm just saying God

  595. like I just I'm willing to suffer for

  596. your name but that that's just too much

  597. uh think about it you got fast food you

  598. order online your car can parallel park

  599. itself like CU because I mean come on

  600. like I I mean everything's

  601. easy and you go well what's the big deal

  602. with that it's not that big of a deal

  603. until we start to realize that

  604. inconvenience feels like

  605. Affliction and when inconvenience feels

  606. like Affliction a genuine trial in your

  607. life feels like Devastation God doesn't

  608. care about me where's the Lord why how

  609. could this happen to me if he loved me

  610. this wouldn't be going on this is

  611. ridiculous this is crazy how could any

  612. of this happen I knew that he wasn't

  613. really all and listen it's in those

  614. moments where you find out that he's

  615. with me nearer than he's ever been that

  616. it's in those moments that you realize

  617. he didn't leave me for a second that I'm

  618. going to sing my song in the

  619. because he's never left me and there's

  620. deeply transformative work that's going

  621. on right here it's like the old proverb

  622. goes no gem can be polished without

  623. friction and no person can be perfected

  624. without enduring great trials and it is

  625. in them where God will refine you like

  626. gold and a fire first Peter would tell

  627. us that you might find yourself being

  628. built and not being broken as a result

  629. of that trial and we see that their

  630. worship does not leave it says in verse

  631. 25 and 26 that suddenly there was such a

  632. violent earthquake that the foundations

  633. of the jail were shaken and immediately

  634. all the doors were opened and everyone's

  635. chains came loose this is the OG Jail

  636. House Rock this is what's going on here

  637. with more appropriate leg movement that

  638. we see

  639. here prayer and

  640. praise miraculous Deliverance Prayer and

  641. praise it's not just that Paul and Silas

  642. will go free it's that other people are

  643. going to go

  644. free and you know what I read that and I

  645. Was preparing for this and just hand in

  646. the air just just being real with y'all

  647. annoyed the heck out of

  648. me so annoyed me for some of you in

  649. here always seems like it works out that

  650. way doesn't it isn't that

  651. annoying can you say

  652. that oh they they pray in Praise And all

  653. everything works

  654. out some of y'all have been praying and

  655. praising and you're like I don't have

  656. nothing to show for it yet nothing and

  657. what do I do with that what do I do with

  658. that I think we have a problem where we

  659. have overemphasized the dramatic over

  660. the subtle move of

  661. God what I love is that in Philippi you

  662. can see just in Philippi that things

  663. kind of start to elevate in drama but it

  664. doesn't mean that God was less involved

  665. in any of it how is Lydia saved just

  666. going to work go gather some girls

  667. training new employees to sell purple

  668. and do whatever she's doing it's all

  669. right welcome to Gucci this what we're

  670. doing like you know I mean this

  671. is an honor way to work there's two

  672. random dudes that clearly don't wear

  673. Gucci and they're just like hey I need

  674. you know you have a deep

  675. need you to tell about a king who gave

  676. his life on a cross miraculous

  677. deliverance and salvation for Lydia

  678. right there nothing

  679. crazy and then you go

  680. to Philippi and stay in Philippi a

  681. little bit longer and you cast a demon

  682. out of a girl and nobody says in

  683. Scripture that she immediately gave her

  684. life to the Lord but scholars believe

  685. she probably did if you were possessed

  686. at one point by a demon and then all of

  687. a sudden it was out of you you might say

  688. hey can we

  689. talk

  690. elevated then we see now it's just this

  691. is dramatic Deliverance the foundation

  692. are shaken and the doors fling open and

  693. chains fall off you see all this stuff

  694. going on and you're like it just

  695. elevates but can I tell you God is no

  696. less involved with Lydia than he is with

  697. the Jailer God has no less saved Lydia

  698. than he has the Jailer that God's

  699. involved in all of it that he can use

  700. miraculous Deliverance or the most

  701. subtle reconcilable means but here what

  702. we see is that it is dramatic we see

  703. that God can move in a way that is

  704. significant and it's not just Mindless

  705. or pointless it says that there's an

  706. earthquake that is violent and the

  707. foundations of the prison shake and the

  708. doors fling open and chains fall off and

  709. it's interesting that that happens here

  710. you know that the earthquake is

  711. Supernatural because it says the

  712. foundation of the prison was shaken by

  713. an earthquake and yet the prison didn't

  714. fall

  715. down the prison's Still Standing how do

  716. you know it's supernatural what

  717. earthquake do you know where it's like

  718. man the earthquake was so crazy where

  719. the buildings stayed up but the chains

  720. fell off

  721. and what we see the Lord is doing is

  722. he's making sure that all the people in

  723. this prison know the god that they're

  724. worshiping right now is a God that's the

  725. Lord of all creation that I am in

  726. control of every single thing that's

  727. going on here and so you might find

  728. yourself in a place where you're just

  729. like I just don't know who this is that

  730. they're worshiping and God will confirm

  731. what you feel like you can't that he

  732. will do the work even when you feel like

  733. I don't know how this is going to happen

  734. right now and what we see is that he's

  735. Lord over all creation that we see here

  736. that he's still in the business of

  737. shaking foundations and opening doors

  738. and chains falling off so that faith can

  739. be freed in a room he still does that it

  740. maybe doesn't look the same and I'd

  741. actually prefer that there's no

  742. earthquake but we see that he's still in

  743. the business of doing it it says in

  744. verse 26 to 28 suddenly there was this

  745. violent earthquake and the foundations

  746. of the jail are shaken and the doors are

  747. opened up and chains are falling off and

  748. the Jailer woke up and saw the doors of

  749. the prison standing open and he drew his

  750. sword and was going to kill

  751. himself since he thought the prisoners

  752. had

  753. escaped but Paul called out in a loud

  754. voice don't harm yourself we're all

  755. here the the Jailer woke up shaken by

  756. this earthquake he awakes and then he's

  757. aware uh my worst nightmare is happening

  758. right

  759. now all the prison doors are open I have

  760. failed on a c catastrophic level and it

  761. says that he goes to draw his sword to

  762. kill

  763. himself because he thought the prisoners

  764. had escaped well under under Roman law

  765. if a guard were to have any prisoner get

  766. loose then what would happen is that

  767. they would have to endure the punishment

  768. that that prisoner was set to endure and

  769. so if this Jailer knew that there were

  770. individuals that were in this prison

  771. that had committed capital crimes and

  772. they were about to endure capital

  773. punishment then he was going to take

  774. matters into his own hands he had

  775. absolutely no interest in suffering

  776. through some shameful execution when he

  777. could just commit suicide right here in

  778. this moment and what's interesting is

  779. that it says the Jor drew his sword and

  780. it says that he drew his sword to kill

  781. himself because he

  782. thought cuz he thought that all the

  783. prisoners had escaped he thought that

  784. worst case scenario was happening he

  785. thought there was no way that he had a

  786. hope in a future he thought there was no

  787. way that I am going to be able to see my

  788. life go any kind of way where it's up

  789. and to the right that I need to just end

  790. it right here and I say that because I

  791. would imagine that there are some of us

  792. that are in the room whether it's you or

  793. your children and you have been

  794. contemplating and fighting and

  795. struggling with similar lines of

  796. thinking and if you don't hear anything

  797. else of what I have to say today then

  798. hear this that what Paul said to the

  799. Jailer is what the Lord is saying to you

  800. don't harm yourself we're all here we're

  801. all here that there's nothing so

  802. terrible in your life that it's

  803. irredeemable or the Lord can't grab hold

  804. of it just keep waiting just keep

  805. staying and I say that and I know that

  806. that's real for some of you that are in

  807. here in fact if you would just bow your

  808. head for two

  809. seconds nobody's looking nobody's

  810. looking and please don't

  811. look would you if if you've struggled

  812. with that or you've got a kid that

  813. struggles with that would you put your

  814. hand

  815. up okay this

  816. is no keep your hand up keep your hand

  817. up I need Alex look Brandon look nobody

  818. else look Alex look Brandon look Travis

  819. look stepen look Dave look Greg

  820. look Rob Totton if you're in here look I

  821. want you to look if you're a deacon look

  822. Felipe look I want you to look that's a

  823. real thing that y'all are going through

  824. and we will meet right up here

  825. afterwards to pray Heaven down over you

  826. and your family when we're done here

  827. okay y'all can put your hand

  828. down they

  829. thought the prisoners had

  830. escaped and some of you you believe a

  831. similar

  832. lie you believe the

  833. lie that

  834. you have no identity apart from what you

  835. can offer Society you're as good as your

  836. work you have no reality where there's a

  837. hope in a future for you that it's the

  838. worst that it's ever going to be and

  839. it's not going to get better you feel

  840. like you have no story that has an

  841. ending that's worth living for but we

  842. see that Paul and Silas are going to

  843. introduce this Jailer and everyone else

  844. to something infinitely better and what

  845. we see is that it says Paul says don't

  846. harm yourself we're all here and the

  847. Jailer called for lights and rushed in

  848. and fell down trembling before Paul and

  849. Silas he escorted them out and said s

  850. what must I do to be saved and they said

  851. believe in the Lord Jesus and you will

  852. be saved you and your household and so

  853. what's amazing here is that if you think

  854. about it I've been captivated by this

  855. all week that Paul said hey we're all

  856. here nobody left no prisoners left can

  857. you imagine if we open the doors of the

  858. nearest prison you think they'd all be

  859. like it's kind of nice in here you know

  860. like what are we doing

  861. they realized we're standing in a

  862. miracle these men were praying and

  863. worshiping and now this has happened I

  864. have been stunned all week that they're

  865. stunned the Jailer and the prisoners are

  866. so in awe and so stunned that none had

  867. run they hear all of this praying and

  868. they hear this singing they're

  869. worshiping singing hymns to God and in

  870. this moment they realize there's a

  871. better identity and reality and story

  872. for my life in Jesus Christ and his

  873. finished work on my behalf

  874. and we see still though it's amazing

  875. that Paul could say not one person has

  876. left we're all

  877. here

  878. why because when you can worship in the

  879. midst of less than ideal circumstances

  880. the rest of the world like these

  881. prisoners did with Paul and Silas look

  882. at them and go these men are worshiping

  883. like free men in prison in a world where

  884. free men worry like they're in prison

  885. they are more free in the worst

  886. circumstance inside of this prison than

  887. anybody that's living on the outside of

  888. this prison right now and every believer

  889. in here should know that worship lands

  890. on the lips of the individual that can

  891. say you can put my feet in stocks but my

  892. heart is in heaven there is no way that

  893. you can touch a single hair on my head

  894. and actually do anything that will

  895. deteriorate my soul it belongs to Jesus

  896. Christ and you cannot take me out of his

  897. hand that you see here that it says and

  898. they spoke the word of the Lord to him

  899. along with everyone else in his house

  900. and he took them the same hour of the

  901. night and washed their wounds and right

  902. away he and his family were baptized he

  903. brought them into his house set a meal

  904. before them rejoiced because they had

  905. come to believe in God with his entire

  906. household that there was a realization

  907. worship is not an

  908. escape from my

  909. circumstances it's God's entrance into

  910. all of them

  911. would you enter into all of

  912. this I'm going to close with a

  913. story some of y'all thought you're going

  914. to get out of here without hearing me

  915. say in 1941 but you're

  916. wrong

  917. so in June

  918. 1941 Dimitri shastovich

  919. began his work on the seventh

  920. Symphony he had been named as the head

  921. of lenen grad's conservator piano

  922. Department which is in Russia and so he

  923. was living and working in Leningrad in

  924. the middle of World War II as Leningrad

  925. started to come under siege and he was

  926. working on the seventh Symphony which

  927. would be his magnumopus it was his

  928. Masterpiece there there's nothing that

  929. he would do in his life that was better

  930. than the work that he did

  931. here in fact he he wrote about how

  932. focused he was he said neither savag

  933. raids nor enemy planes nor Grim

  934. atmospheres of a baguer city could

  935. hinder the flow I love that he said I am

  936. working like a man with inhuman

  937. intensity but in September of 1941

  938. shastovich had to evacuate because the

  939. siege had been too much he and his

  940. family and so he did more work on the

  941. seventh Symphony outside of lenen gr

  942. despite the fact that he had

  943. accomplished quite a bit in his time

  944. there and on October the 8th 1941 he

  945. ended up writing a letter where he said

  946. to the people of Leningrad that this

  947. symphony is about our age our people our

  948. sacred war and our

  949. Victory he finished it on December the

  950. 27th 1941 and he nicknamed the 7th

  951. Symphony the lenr

  952. symphony for the people in the city

  953. where it had begun where he had done

  954. much of the leg work it ended up

  955. premiering in kushev in on March the 5th

  956. 1942 and it even got out and got played

  957. in different areas it was performed in

  958. Moscow and in London and even in New

  959. York meanwhile Leningrad was under siege

  960. in a horrible way I mean the city was

  961. decimated starved German forces had

  962. surrounded the outside of the city and

  963. they were letting very few people in or

  964. out so it was difficult to get any kind

  965. of supply and it was interesting one

  966. individual in their diary who was living

  967. in that area at this time said the dead

  968. are littered all over the streets and

  969. they are

  970. unburied people are eating rats and cats

  971. and dogs some

  972. have even resorted to

  973. cannibalism the German forces have

  974. surrounded

  975. Leningrad and yet somehow the Leningrad

  976. Symphony was able to get inside the city

  977. after it had been completed by

  978. shastovich and it got into the hands of

  979. a man named Carl

  980. eliasberg Carl

  981. eliasberg had been named the conductor

  982. of the lenr radio Orchestra uh when the

  983. city was doing well but obviously all of

  984. those things had fallen off and now it

  985. was just about

  986. survival but he had received this

  987. Symphony and he had been

  988. instructed to rehearse shostakovich's

  989. 7eventh Symphony and so he

  990. tried he sent out a memo to his many

  991. people as he had known that were

  992. musicians prior to the siege of the city

  993. and 15 people showed

  994. up 15 people showed up for their first

  995. rehearsal and this is uh what sh ovich

  996. wrote when they tried to have a second

  997. no rehearsal

  998. today two died and one is sick and going

  999. to

1000. die they tried to have a third rehearsal

1001. and he said broke rehearsal today after

  1002. 15 minutes were

1003. starved the trumpeter apologized to me

1004. profusely when they did not have enough

1005. breath in their lungs to play a

1006. note and he did better than the others

1007. who lacked the strength to even hold

  1008. their instruments and

1009. play they were were able to at some

  1010. point through really broken

1011. work get through the symphony just one

1012. time and they felt like that was good

1013. enough to give it a go and perform given

1014. the circumstances and on August the 9th

1015. 1942 they performed it in their City and

1016. I want to read to you what that day was

1017. like moments before the performance the

1018. Soviet Army did their best to land a

1019. vicious bombardment on German Army lines

1020. this had been done to silence their guns

1021. so that the performance could take place

  1022. minus any

1023. interruptions different teams of people

1024. grabbed as many loudspeakers as we could

1025. and set them at all four corners of the

1026. city but rather than than putting them

1027. on the inside facing the inside that our

1028. population might hear this Symphony we

1029. ended up turning them to the outside

1030. that our enemies might hear our
