  1. all right all right well welcome to life

  2. Bridge Church everybody how's everyone

  3. feeling we doing all

  4. right just want to take a moment to note

  5. to all of you that are sitting uh on the

  6. sides right there that we see these

  7. people that have opened seats next to

  8. them that did not let you sit there and

  9. uh there will be an altar call at the

  10. end of our time together today uh and we

  11. know that there is at least some measure

  12. of sin in the camp so um hey we are

  13. grateful if you do see someone that is

  14. struggling to find a seat please be a

  15. hospitable believer in Christ Jesus

  16. recognizing that he gave his life for

  17. you and you might be able to sit next to

  18. a complete and total stranger it'll be

  19. okay uh anybody enjoy the parking lot

  20. experience this morning was it better

  21. this morning all right yeah thank you

  22. yeah we we knew that we needed to change

  23. service times we knew that this was the

  24. most stubborn group of all so we didn't

  25. change it uh and so it doesn't matter

  26. that I'm going to say things to you like

  27. hey the 8:15 is a great Gathering that

  28. you should consider attending sometimes

  29. because you'd really enjoy it and leave

  30. some more room for people I know that

  31. you're hearing me and it's just woo out

  32. the other ear and and so but just

  33. hypothetically speaking if there were

  34. even like five Saints in the house today

  35. that felt called by God to attend the

  36. 8:15 that would be amazing but we're

  37. grateful that you're here uh if I were

  38. you this is the one that I'd want to be

  39. at because it's fun is it not 10: a.m.

  40. is fun we have a good time uh and so we

  41. are going to have a good time today as

  42. we continue in our collection that we

  43. start started this past weekend that we

  44. have called walk the walk walk the walk

  45. is a collection it is a discussion where

  46. we are living and lingering in the Book

  47. of James and we're going to do so for

  48. quite some time as we recognize that

  49. James is making sure that we are a

  50. people who practice what we preach amen

  51. we want to be a people yall with me at

  52. the 10: a.m. we want to be a people that

  53. practice what we preach and so we have

  54. taken this title from a phrase that is

  55. very well known where we will say hey

  56. don't just talk the talk but rather walk

  57. the walk there we go and that's what we

  58. see James is calling us to do James

  59. understands what it means to walk with

  60. our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ he

  61. recognizes that it is not just inward

  62. transformation it's not less than that

  63. but it's not just inward transformation

  64. it's also outward application and so

  65. James understands this that we live in a

  66. broken and a fallen world a world that

  67. is sick with sin and sin has separated

  68. us from a holy and a perfect God and so

  69. as a result of that we know that Romans

    Romans 6:23

  70. 6:23 would tell us that the wages of sin

  71. is death and it's not just a physical

  72. death but it is also an eternal

  73. spiritual death in the sense that you

  74. are eternally separated from your

  75. heavenly father that if God just allowed

  76. there to be sin around him then he would

  77. not be holy and he would not be just and

  78. because he is those things there would

  79. have to be some radical intervention

  80. that happens on our behalf that would

  81. cleanse us of sin that we might be able

  82. to enter into the presence of our

  83. heavenly father and the good news of the

  84. Gospel of Jesus Christ is that in Jesus

  85. we do experience that that we see that

  86. the most merciful demonstration of

  87. sacrificial Grace and love is found in

  88. the person and the finished work of

  89. Jesus Christ that in Jesus there is

  90. salvation that Ephesians 1:7 would say

    Ephesians 1:7

  91. in him is redemption and the forgiveness

  92. of sin anybody grateful for that this

  93. morning that that is why we're gathered

  94. here and that's what we're here to

  95. celebrate that you and I understand we

  96. cannot achieve salvation by works yes we

  97. cannot achieve salvation we receive it

  98. as a free gift that is offered to us in

  99. Jesus that we've repented of our sins

  100. and put our faith in him and so we

  101. recognize though we might try to climb

  102. our way to God the good news of the

  103. Gospel is that God came down to us TR in

  104. Jesus and so we understand we are not

  105. saved by our works I'm going to keep

  106. saying that every week we are not saved

  107. by our works you can't do enough of this

  108. and not much of that and all of a sudden

  109. God's like welcome that's not the way

  110. that this works but rather we don't

  111. achieve we receive that gift in Jesus

  112. and so we are a people that trust in his

  113. finished work and we understand that

  114. under the power of the Holy Spirit at

  115. work within us we have regenerated

  116. renewed Hearts but we also have engaged

  117. heads and hands in the work that God has

  118. called us to be a part of yes and so we

  119. are going to be in James chap 1 veres

  120. 2-8 where we are talking about

  121. trials all right um that's great anybody

  122. love a good trial love a good trial

  123. anybody in here that would say hey I'm

  124. going through some things right now some

  125. struggles and some trials put them up

  126. you're in the back I can still see you

  127. clearly yep all right let's get let's

  128. get honest today uh that that's that's

  129. that's who we are that's what we want to

  130. be about there are many of us in here

  131. that know what it's like to experience

  132. trials in this life and very often it is

  133. difficult for us to make sense of what

  134. it is that is happening in the midst of

  135. those is there anything that is

  136. happening in the midst of those you

  137. could be here now and we welcome your

  138. questions and discussion around what is

  139. it that God is doing here well we're

  140. about to let the word of God speak

  141. because I don't know if you know this

  142. but we do not show up to listen to

  143. someone one just kind of uh go on and on

  144. and on all day and we are here to listen

  145. to what it is that God's word has to say

  146. and so with that being said yall ready

  147. for the word James chapter 1 beginning

    James 1 chapter mention

  148. in verse two it says this consider it a

  149. great joy my brothers and sisters

  150. whenever you experience various trials

  151. because you know that the testing of

  152. your faith produces endurance and let

  153. endurance have its full effect so that

  154. you may be mature and complete lacking

  155. nothing now if any of you lacks wisdom

  156. he should ask God who gives to all

  157. generously and ungrudgingly and it will

  158. be given to him but let him ask in faith

  159. without doubting for the doubter is like

  160. surging sea driven and tossed by the

  161. wind and the person should not expect to

  162. receive anything from the Lord being

  163. doubl minded and unstable in all his

  164. ways let's pray

  165. together uh Lord we

  166. are really grateful um to be gathered

  167. together in this place and to be able to

  168. be honest about some of the pain that we

  169. are experiencing Lord I know some

  170. people's struggles uh and trials that

  171. they're enduring here and yet I know

  172. that there are some where I I know

  173. nothing at all and Lord you do and so

  174. father I'm asking that your spirit would

  175. move in this place in a mighty way to

  176. where we might have some people have

  177. their minds unlocked to the realities of

  178. what it is that you're doing in them but

  179. Lord that you would also maybe provide

  180. some alleviation and freedom in the room

  181. that did not exist prior to coming in

  182. here and so Lord we are not uh here here

  183. just kind of hoping that we can go

  184. through the motions but we're believing

  185. that you are here that your presence is

  186. here that we are not just here alone but

  187. rather we are gathered in your name so

  188. Lord would you do a remarkable work for

  189. the glory of Your Name Lord we love you

  190. we praise you and we thank you we ask

  191. these things in Jesus name

  192. amen well in

  193. 1975 American jazz piano player by the

  194. name of Keith Jarrett was doing a tour

  195. across Europe and one of his stops was

  196. was at the cologne opera house in

  197. Germany and so at the cologne opera

  198. house they were employing at the time

  199. who was the youngest concert promoter in

  200. all of Europe a young 17-year-old Jazz

  201. fanatic named Vera Brandis Vera Brandis

  202. had been expecting to have more than

  203. 1,400 people show up for this concert

  204. that Keith Jarrett would be performing

  205. on this particular evening and she was

  206. really thrilled and excited about the

  207. prospect of seeing all these people come

  208. to be able to listen to him and here's

  209. the thing you got to understand about

  210. Keith Jared he's an obsessive

  211. perfectionist he's very particular about

  212. the kinds of pianos that he plays he's

  213. someone that cares a lot about the way

  214. that things sound to be a great

  215. obsessive perfectionist you have to want

  216. everything to be absolutely perfect and

  217. that's what he wanted and so he had

  218. requested a very specific grand piano

  219. that he wanted to play on this

  220. particular evening for this live

  221. performance and yet what he would come

  222. to find out is that something shocking

  223. would be in store for him he and his

  224. manager had driven all through the night

  225. in order to make sure that they were

  226. here at this venue for their concert

  227. that would go on that day and so as they

  228. ended up showing up at this particular

  229. venue they were inspecting it and they

  230. were checking everything out to kind of

  231. see what they were working with and they

  232. were shocked when the piano that they

  233. had for him that evening ended up being

  234. wheeled out they realized Not only was

  235. it not a grand piano but it was actually

  236. a baby grand piano and it looked like it

  237. was in rough shape it looked like it had

  238. been used for rehearsals but it was

  239. certainly not something that anybody

  240. could expect that you would use for a

  241. live performance and so still Keith

  242. Jarrett wanted to humor the people that

  243. were there and he decided that he would

  244. sit down and review this piano that they

  245. had given him to work with and as he was

  246. messing around on this piano he started

  247. to recognize that some of the black

  248. notes didn't work that the pedals were

  249. sticking every now and then he noticed

  250. that the upper register was Tiny and

  251. thin and that the base register was

  252. particularly weak and so to make matters

  253. worse he had just driven all through

  254. through the night he was dealing with

  255. severe back pain and so Keith Jarrett

  256. was dealing with very little sleep very

  257. little health and now he had this

  258. horrific piano that was in front of him

  259. to play in front of all of these people

  260. and so he went back to Vera Brandis and

  261. just said hey there is no way on God's

  262. green earth that I'm playing this

  263. concert tonight I cannot with this awful

  264. piano that you have provided and so she

  265. did what any 17-year-old girl at their

  266. first job would probably do in that

  267. circumstance she panicked she tried to

  268. get a piano that she could swap out in

  269. time but nobody was able to make it

  270. happen she brought in a piano tuner that

  271. came in to try to see what he could do

  272. with this piano and he was like I don't

  273. even think God could restore this piano

  274. like this thing is awful why would you

  275. bring this for someone and so she did

  276. the only thing that she could do at that

  277. point which was to beg she begged Keith

  278. Jarrett to go on with this performance

  279. and somewhat mercifully but also

  280. reluctantly he decided that he would and

  281. he didn't go out until 11:30 p.m. that

  282. evening and he did so with a back brace

  283. for his pain and he ended up playing his

  284. heart out he recognized that the piano

  285. that they had provided was small and so

  286. it wasn't going to be able to generate

  287. enough volume to fill the room and so he

  288. would stand up and slam down on the keys

  289. he would sit down and carefully avoid

  290. all of the broken keys and he ended up

  291. delivering what would become an alltime

  292. historic performance that we see that

  293. this concert would become known as the

  294. col concert and that he would deliver an

  295. alltime historic performance that is

  296. considered to be one of the greatest

  297. musical performances in all of human

  298. history and for a period of time it

  299. would also be the bestselling album of

  300. all time in multiple categories the

  301. bestselling solo Jazz album of all time

  302. and the bestselling piano album of all

  303. time that what we see is that he had

  304. been provided with this absolutely

  305. horrific circumstance and yet he also

  306. provided an alltime historic performance

  307. that he had been given this musical

  308. trial that would somehow result in in a

  309. musical Triumph like he had no reason no

  310. logical reason to believe that this

  311. could become an iconic performance one

  312. of the best selling albums in multiple

  313. categories there was nothing that made

  314. sense in that regard the piano he'd been

  315. given was pathetic the day had been

  316. distracting my man's back is literally

  317. broken and yet what we see is that

  318. despite the fact that he had no logical

  319. reason to believe that any of these

  320. things could come to fruition something

  321. remarkable ended up happening that we

  322. see that he would play his magnum opus

  323. on a mangled

  324. piano that you would see it's

  325. interesting that he had been given

  326. this and it didn't make sense that it

  327. could become what it

  328. became the truth of the matter is if you

  329. think about it the only reason that he

  330. played the way that he played and he

  331. seen the success that he's seen is

  332. because of this piano that he was given

  333. not in spite of the trial but because of

  334. the trial we see that all of these

  335. incredible things would happen he had

  336. been presented with a trial that

  337. initially seemed like an initial

  338. inhibition to anything great that could

  339. happen and rather he would come to

  340. recognize that trial was the instigation

  341. of what many people today see as musical

  342. Perfection it was because of that trial

  343. that something incredible was able to

  344. happen not in spite of it and I say that

  345. to you today because the truth of the

  346. matter is I think we've got a lot of

  347. people in here that can find themselves

  348. navigating some trials and some

  349. struggles and we probably don't like it

  350. a whole lot like has anybody in here

  351. ever been in a situation or a season

  352. where you're like just anything that can

  353. go wrong is going wrong

  354. anybody come on y'all are good up there

  355. that's that's good to know I'm glad

  356. we'll talk y'all can preach next week

  357. like uh like like everybody has like

  358. like where you feel like hey there are

  359. things that I'm hoping for and it

  360. doesn't feel like any of that is

  361. happening we ever been in a season or

  362. situation ation like that where you're

  363. like God I I want to do something

  364. incredible with this life that you've

  365. given me like I want to make beautiful

  366. music with the life that you've given me

  367. and it feels like you gave me a trash

  368. piano like it feels like the black notes

  369. don't work and the pedals are sticking

  370. it feels like it's anxiousness and anger

  371. it feels like nothing could possibly go

  372. right with what I've been given and yet

  373. what we see is that God loves to play

  374. Beautiful music on broken Pian and in

  375. Jesus Christ Christ there's the

  376. Redemption of broken notes and sounds of

  377. a new song and I say that to you this

  378. morning because what we need to

  379. understand is that he is echoing that

  380. here in James like this is a difficult

  381. word for us to process and yet it's one

  382. that we are required to process

  383. nonetheless and he's going to

  384. demonstrate that the same thing is true

  385. here in this text and he starts off in

  386. James chapter 1 vers2 and says consider

    James 1 chapter mention

  387. it a great joy

  388. okay uh consider it a great joy my

  389. brothers and sisters whenever you

  390. experience various

  391. trials see you next week right like I

  392. like is that what y'all

  393. do let let me go first here um whenever

  394. I find myself in the middle of what

  395. feels like a legitimate trial I feel all

  396. sorts of things all sorts of

  397. things Joy let alone great joy aren't in

  398. the top

  399. hundred I feel all the things that would

  400. make many of you wish you had a

  401. different Pastor I I'm telling you anger

  402. anxiousness fear frustration why God I

  403. feel all those things before I feel Joy

  404. or great joy nothing just ends up

  405. happening and I'm like this is great God

  406. that's not my initial

  407. response and I don't think it's yours

  408. either like like that's not the way that

  409. we're wired but what you see here is

  410. that it there's a word that you you

  411. can't even get to the next word in the

  412. verse before you have to spend some time

  413. on that first one it says

  414. consider consider it a great joy

  415. whenever you experience various

  416. trials you have to consider that word

  417. consider before you move forward and

  418. what's amazing is that in the original

  419. language that word consider it it

  420. literally means a mental evaluation that

  421. is filled with careful thinking it's not

  422. just evaluating what's in front of you

  423. it's evaluating all of the things that

  424. are around the extenuating circumstance

  425. in front of you it means careful and due

  426. deliberation over what you see in this

  427. particular moment that you might be able

  428. to look at more than the actual struggle

  429. and trial in front of you and look at

  430. all things that you know to be true and

  431. realize that I can have an inner

  432. attitude that lives in Defiance of this

  433. external circumstance that there's an

  434. inner life that's being built in Me by

  435. the power of the Holy Spirit through the

  436. work of Christ Jesus that is able to

  437. look at what's in front of me and go I

  438. realize that this is a card that I have

  439. been dealt and yet I believe that there

  440. is more than what I see right here and

  441. now right we consider it a great joy

  442. what's interesting is that we consider

  443. things all the time you will consider

  444. things today we consider often consider

  445. ing something it is simply calculating

  446. based upon your values right right so

  447. let let me help you I I I like cars that

  448. look cool I'm not even like a car guy

  449. because I said cars that look cool like

  450. I I just I I think that there are cars

  451. that I look at and I just realize that

  452. costs a lot and I and I like them now

  453. here here's the truth of the matter I

  454. like these cars that that look like a

  455. Batmobile and I realize I probably can't

  456. afford and so because of that I I

  457. realize that I need to consider the fact

  458. that I value my marriage more than that

  459. vehicle and so I cannot purchase it and

  460. and really put ourselves in a financial

  461. hole and then go back to my wife and be

  462. like lindsy look what look what I did

  463. for us and then she's going to go we're

  464. going to counseling right like there's

  465. no way that you can do that I consider

  466. that I value my marriage more than I

  467. value that vehicle just enough right

  468. like that would be cool to drive a

  469. Batmobile but probably not a good idea

  470. you might consider in your life you

  471. might be in a place right now where

  472. where you you realize hey my family is

  473. thriving things are going well but but

  474. you're offered a new position somewhere

  475. else but your teenagers are loving it

  476. here and so you realize hey I'm going to

  477. forego I'm calculating based upon my

  478. values I could make more money there but

  479. my family is doing well here because I

  480. value my family I'm not going to go

  481. purchasing trying to figure out how I

  482. can purchase more things with money that

  483. that you calculate on values all the

  484. time but Warren weby says it like this

  485. he he says our values determine our

  486. evaluations if we value comfort more

  487. than character trials will upset

  488. us if we value the material and the

  489. physical more than the spiritual we can

  490. never then consider it a great joy if we

  491. live for the present and we forget about

  492. our future we will be bitter not better

  493. which sounds amazing except for the fact

  494. that it's still

  495. hard like like that sounds awesome but

  496. are y'all reading like what I'm reading

  497. I skipped this stuff like I don't This

  498. Is Not Great consider it a great joy

  499. whenever whenever you experience various

  500. trials not if whenever when you

  501. experience trials and doesn't just say

  502. like an if then statement like you

  503. learned in school right it doesn't say

  504. if remember in high school like one of

  505. the maybe maybe it was earlier than that

  506. I don't it's been a minute so like uh

  507. like do you remember in in like science

  508. class one of the first things that you

  509. learn is the if then statement y'all

  510. know what I'm talking about did y'all go

  511. to school like is like did like I'm not

  512. talking about college I'm just like did

  513. did did y'all like go to elementary

  514. school I don't know when you learned it

  515. but I know you did did anybody know what

  516. the if then statement is am I okay all

  517. right I'm glad that we all have like

  518. Elementary level education all right so

  519. uh like the if then statements the most

  520. basic thing about forming a hypothesis

  521. ever if this happens then that will

  522. likely happen right we good like we

  523. remember this now and so what you'll

  524. notice is that it's like hey if I don't

  525. study for the test then I'm likely going

  526. to fail the test that that's the way

  527. that it goes we see that James is doing

  528. something way worse than that here it's

  529. not an if statement it's a when then

  530. statement when you experience trials

  531. then Rejoice is that great whenever you

  532. feel like suffering smacks you in the

  533. face sing whenever you feel like you're

  534. getting pummeled with painful

  535. circumstances in life praise and what

  536. you see is that it says whenever you

  537. experience various trials in that great

  538. like a diversified assortment of Trials

  539. all sorts of different trials pick your

  540. candy trials all sorts of different

  541. kinds and it doesn't just say trials it

  542. doesn't just say trial it says triols

  543. with an S like plural like there's going

  544. to be lots of those different candies

  545. that you could select it could be

  546. anything from like a mild inconvenience

  547. to an overwhelming seemingly

  548. insurmountable trial that you could find

  549. yourself in a place where you're like

  550. hey I just set my alarm for the wrong

  551. time and then I was late to work and I

  552. missed a meeting I'm in hot water with

  553. my

  554. boss or I had a tickle in my throat and

  555. I went to the doctor and I thought that

  556. I had strep and now I'm fighting for my

  557. life like it could be any of those

  558. things it could run the gamut any of

  559. those

  560. things whenever you

  561. face various

  562. trials then what and you go why why are

  563. you bearing down on this right here and

  564. now for this reason I think there's some

  565. of us that go but but but that's for

  566. people who don't

  567. believe that's not for me and I would

  568. say

  569. well um

  570. it says consider it a great joy my

  571. brothers and

  572. sisters that's

  573. us that's you and me we're in it

  574. together I I it's saying hey in this

  575. life trials are not something you can

  576. flee they're a guarantee so long as

  577. you've got breath in your lungs you will

  578. encounter trials and I'm beating this

  579. dead horse at this point for this reason

  580. I think that Believers in Jesus have

  581. misconstrued and quite frankly L been

  582. naive to how trials operate in our

  583. life like I think a lot of us have been

  584. fed the lie and maybe even believed the

  585. lie if I live my life with enough

  586. obedience then I'll be excluded from

  587. trials and the truth of the matter is

  588. that is one of the most bogus lies that

  589. you could ever hear in your life and the

  590. problem is that some of you think God's

  591. a dictator and not a dad and and so you

  592. find yourself in a place where you're

  593. like I'm just going to March as straight

  594. as I can and I'm GNA stand up straight

  595. I'm gonna be tall I'm I'm going to live

  596. my my life well enough to where I'm not

  597. going to find myself in any kind of

  598. trial and the truth of the matter is

  599. there is nothing you can do in your life

  600. you can't live with enough obedience to

  601. be excluded from trials which is

  602. hopefully freeing for some of us because

  603. some of you feel like God's perpetually

  604. mad at you and he's not he he's going to

  605. discipline like a dad who realized this

  606. hurts now but it's going to make things

  607. better in the long run that what you see

  608. is it doesn't matter how well you're

  609. living or not living

  610. trials cannot be something that you are

  611. excluded from as a result of your

  612. obedience here's the crazy thing you'll

  613. probably end up in more trials as a

  614. result of your

  615. obedience than your Disobedience think

  616. about Joseph you see it all throughout

  617. scripture Joseph tells his brothers a

  618. dream sure they're probably not the most

  619. fun thing to hear if you're one of the

  620. other brothers hey I had this dream and

  621. y'all were bowing down to me and stuff

  622. kiss in the ring it was crazy and they

  623. throw him in a pit and after he gets

  624. thrown in a pit he ends up finding

  625. himself in a palace and as he's in

  626. Pharaoh's Palace all of a sudden his

  627. wife makes a false accusation against

  628. him and he ends up in prison because of

  629. his

  630. obedience you see it with Moses God

  631. calls to Moses in a burning bush and

  632. it's like hey I need you to go and tell

  633. the most powerful man in the world to

  634. let my people go and Moses is like

  635. please send somebody else and they have

  636. this whole battle about it for like a

  637. chapter and a half and then finally

  638. Moses goes and he goes up to pharaoh and

  639. says hey man God said to let my people

  640. go and pH goes uh no and I'm going to

  641. increase their suffering because of his

  642. obedience Shadrach Meshach and Abednego

  643. like you see that all of the people in

  644. the nation are like we'll Bow Down and

  645. Worship whoever as long as we don't get

  646. killed and they're like hey do you guys

  647. want to Bow and they're like no we want

  648. to be obedient to the Lord and they get

  649. thrown into a fiery furnace because of

  650. their obedience you see what the TW

  651. disciples that whenever they find

  652. themselves on the shore Jesus says hey

  653. will you guys go across to the other

  654. side I'll meet you over there and they

  655. find themselves smack dabb in the middle

  656. of a storm because of their obedience

  657. Paul and Silas are going in the

  658. direction that the Lord tells them to go

  659. we see that Paul casts a demon out of a

  660. slave girl and as a result of that they

  661. then are thrown into prison and they

  662. have their feet put in stocks as a

  663. result of their obedience Jesus Christ

  664. lived the perfect life that you and I

  665. could not and died the death that you

  666. and I deserved in perfect obedience told

  667. us that we're going to have to take up

  668. our cross and follow him and we think

  669. we're going to get out of this stuff

  670. no obedience is not going to exclude you

  671. from trials you might encounter more but

  672. they are there to establish your

  673. faith and for many of

  674. us you could probably get to a point

  675. where I I have at one point or another

  676. and you go okay well it's it's the whole

  677. rejoicing thing that's tough

  678. honestly like is this where people get

  679. the idea that Christians are just fake

  680. act like fine even when things aren't

  681. fine you pretend like things aren't

  682. painful even though clearly they are no

  683. nobody's asking you to

  684. act there there's a devotional that I've

  685. read over the

  686. past like 15ish years and on one of the

  687. days there's a poem in it think about it

  688. for a while every year that I read it

  689. and it goes like this it says strange

  690. and difficult we may find it but the

  691. blessing that we need is behind it the

  692. school of suffering graduates

  693. exceptional

  694. Scholars there's something that's

  695. happening there consider it a great joy

  696. when you encounter experience various

  697. trials why because there's something

  698. profound being produced in you and we

  699. don't just see this here in James though

  700. we do you go on to verse three and it

  701. says because you know isn't it great

  702. that you know something isn't it great

  703. that you're not just aimlessly like why

  704. am I going through this why am I going

  705. through that if you are a follower of

  706. Jesus Christ then you can know none of

  707. this stuff is for nothing he's using it

  708. there's something powerful in it he says

  709. because you know that the testing of

  710. your faith what

  711. produces produces endurance Romans

  712. chapter 5: 3 and four would say we know

  713. that Affliction produces endurance

  714. endurance produces proven character and

  715. proven character produces hope there's a

  716. line of production that's going on here

  717. 1 Peter chap 1: 6 and 7 would say that

  718. you suffer grief in various trials so

  719. the proven character of your faith may

  720. result that will produce praise glory

  721. and honor at the revelation of Jesus

  722. Christ that in the tension of

  723. trial is where you realize there's

  724. something profound that's being produced

  725. in me right you don't even have to go

  726. that far in life to find out that this

  727. is true in lots of other much more minor

  728. circumstances uh one of the thing that

  729. things that I don't understand in this

  730. world is people that like the

  731. gym we serious right

  732. now the people that just like Man Iron

  733. there's nothing like going in and seeing

  734. a bunch of people that didn't actually

  735. end up succeeding in some things to end

  736. up just caring so much about like I just

  737. want to just I just man I just love

  738. pumping iron is it the greatest thing

  739. ever I'm like have you had like cookies

  740. like there's all sorts of things that

  741. are better than this like I I would do

  742. anything other than be here right now

  743. like but I had one guy come up to me at

  744. one point in my life and he said Luke

  745. every man thinks they're Brave by saying

  746. that they would die for their family

  747. everybody would do that said the

  748. question is will you work out for them

  749. and do your best to live as long as you

  750. can for them and I was

  751. like you know I'm going to have to pray

  752. about that I honestly don't know um I

  753. like I actually you know how how long am

  754. I going to live if I don't like you know

  755. I it's just like I I got to know what's

  756. the timeline so but I I I felt convicted

  757. enough to where I felt like I would do

  758. it and the first thing that I wanted to

  759. do was uh I go into a gym I don't know

  760. anything I'm here I'm like please

  761. everybody leave me alone like can there

  762. just be curtains that block me off in my

  763. sadness over here and and and as I get

  764. there my first order of business in my

  765. own mind is I'm going to go a 100 Floors

  766. on the StairMaster anybody know this

  767. horrific torturous death machine you

  768. know what I'm talking about um I decid

  769. I'm going to go 100 Floors on the stair

  770. master I'm a Christian so I put

  771. Christian music in my ears I I I would

  772. never listen to anything else under any

  773. circumstances and and so as I find

  774. myself getting there I'm like this is

  775. Stairway to Heaven almost literally I am

  776. Huffing and puffing I am pounding the

  777. pavement on this StairMaster I feel like

  778. I been on this thing for plenty of time

  779. must be 144 floors up I look down it

  780. says

  781. 12 and um

  782. I go get

  783. management your stair Master's broken

  784. right I've gone 144 floors it's saying

  785. 12 it's kind of weird and I I'll I'll

  786. tell you because I've dealt with it

  787. emotionally at this point

  788. um the next

  789. day I I felt

  790. like I felt like

  791. somebody had strapped me down to a train

  792. track run over my legs and then backed

  793. up and did it again like it was just

  794. awful it was awful and like I'm I'm a

  795. man so like I still have like I I want

  796. to you Lindsay's like you okay I'm like

  797. yeah I'm good yeah I'm just like it's

  798. awful but I realized over

  799. time I still don't like to do this thing

  800. don't get it twisted but I can go 100

  801. Floors

  802. without having much pain because there

  803. was endurance that was built up as a

  804. result of continuing to go underneath

  805. the strain of this awful machine I did

  806. it right and here's the truth of the

  807. matter uh you don't have to be someone

  808. that likes to go to the gym we've

  809. established that that makes you normal

  810. the truth of the matter is that there's

  811. a lot of other things that would

  812. indicate that you love struggle and

  813. trial now you don't you don't for

  814. yourself we loathe struggles and trials

  815. when they apply to us

  816. but we love a story that's got good

  817. struggle we love a tale that's got great

  818. trials you actually wouldn't have it any

  819. other way like you can't eliminate the

  820. biggest struggle and trial in the midst

  821. of a story that you're willing to watch

  822. or read or tell to another person like

  823. you can't leave out of Star Wars that

  824. Vader Luke's

  825. dad I trust I've heard about it my whole

  826. life Luke I'm your father it's like the

  827. biggest part

  828. like you can't leave out that Maximus is

  829. on this gladiatorial Rampage why he just

  830. woke up he was hungry one day no it's

  831. because they murdered his wife and his

  832. son you can't leave that out you can't

  833. leave out how Harry Potter who I know is

  834. like evil evil magic and Lord of the

  835. Rings and narn or good magic I don't

  836. know how we came to that but uh Harry

  837. Potter you can't leave out that he's

  838. bullied his whole life and he's stuck in

  839. a Cupboard Under the Stairs like that

  840. makes The Story You're The Chosen one

  841. but everyone doesn't like you on the

  842. other side of Hogwarts how does that

  843. work you can't leave out that Noah is

  844. reading to his beloved and he's put

  845. together this story where oh he's not

  846. just volunteering at a home but he's

  847. reading to his wife who has Alzheimer's

  848. their story like you have to know like

  849. you can't leave out those parts listen

  850. to me nobody loves a story without

  851. struggle nobody loves a tale without

  852. trial not even you you can't put those

  853. chapters down and you won't look away

  854. from those scenes

  855. a good struggle and a good trial not

  856. only shapes the story it shapes the

  857. trajectory of the story maybe most

  858. importantly it shapes the character's

  859. character and can I tell you God will do

  860. the same with

  861. you he will make you struggle to make

  862. you strong in him he will put trials in

  863. your path not just allow trials but he

  864. will put trials in your path in order to

  865. trans form

  866. you we love it that way we just don't

  867. like when it's happening to us but it

  868. creates it produces what

  869. endurance and it says let endurance have

  870. its full effect so that you may be

  871. mature and complete lacking nothing uh

  872. endurance in the original language it's

  873. one of my favorite Greek words it's the

  874. word hoop it means to abide under that

  875. you're abiding in Christ underneath the

  876. weight and the strain of struggle and

  877. trial and that there's an endurance

  878. that's being built up as a result of

  879. that you're remaining underneath the

  880. weight of that struggle and trial I have

  881. a mentor that says it like this he says

  882. Luke I'm not wiser than you despite the

  883. fact that he's like 70 so he is but he

  884. says Luke I'm not wiser than you he says

  885. but I've seen more sunrises and sunsets

  886. I've had to live underneath the strain

  887. of things that you experience for a

  888. longer amount of

  889. time it's endurance

  890. says that you may be perfect incomplete

  891. or mature incomplete lacking nothing now

  892. I I flip those mature incomplete or

  893. perfect incomplete because you might be

  894. reading a translation that says

  895. perfect my translation is one that I

  896. prefer and that's why we read it because

  897. we love God and and what we see is it

  898. says mature and complete lacking

  899. nothing your translation uh is not bad

  900. it's just that that word in the original

  901. language it could be rendered as mature

  902. or perfect but uh I I like the word

  903. mature because perfect can be can make

  904. you panicked a little bit wait I got to

  905. be perfect at the end of this thing and

  906. it's not saying that you'll be without

  907. flaw it's saying that you'll be mature

  908. that the thing that began in you will be

  909. carried on to completion Philippians

  910. would say that he who began a good work

  911. in you will carry it on to completion

  912. yes says that we will be mature and

  913. complete lacking nothing and he says now

  914. if any of you lacks wisdom you should

  915. ask God who gives to all generously and

  916. ungrudgingly and it will be given to him

  917. but let him ask in faith without

  918. doubting now whenever we find ourselves

  919. in the middle of Trials there's a normal

  920. response it can be

  921. disorienting what is going

  922. on and in the middle of that what we see

  923. is that sometimes you'll find yourself

  924. in a trial and you'll know exactly what

  925. God is doing anybody testify you you you

  926. know how you ended up in this one if

  927. you're like me I'm not saying anyone

  928. else in here is but let me just be

  929. honest about me I I have heard uh

  930. through the gra find that hypothetically

  931. speaking there's the potential that I

  932. can be hard-headed at times and and and

  933. so sometimes I find myself going through

  934. the same type of trial over and over and

  935. over and sometimes you wonder why is

  936. this happening and what I love is that

  937. God says ask ask

  938. me and I'll give you the wisdom to do so

  939. but what's kind of scary is that second

  940. part he says ask

  941. in faith without

  942. doubting I I love that he says to ask

  943. him and he'll give generously and

  944. ungrudgingly are you hearing that like

  945. when you're in the midst of great

  946. struggle go to God with it and he says I

  947. I'm going to give generously I'm not

  948. going to be like here's an Eminem he's

  949. going to give you the bag he he's like

  950. I'm going to give you all of it I will

  951. give you the wisdom that you need for

  952. this situation and it says ungrudgingly

  953. it's not like if you repeatedly come to

  954. God and say Lord I need more wisdom for

  955. what it is that I feel like I'm

  956. encountering it's not like he didn't

  957. give you enough the first time but you

  958. might need to go back to him a second

  959. time because you didn't eat the whole

  960. bag he'll say I'll give it to you I'll

  961. give it to you generously and

  962. ungrudgingly and he not only says what

  963. we should ask he says how we should ask

  964. generously and ungrudgingly but then he

  965. says in faith without doubting and that

  966. can be where a lot of us are like I'm

  967. out on that if you're just being real

  968. in faith and without

  969. doubting and then furthermore it feels

  970. like James goes on to kind of make fun

  971. of the struggle does it

  972. not it says in verses 6 through eight

  973. for the doubter is like the surging sea

  974. driven and tossed by the wind and that

  975. person should not expect to receive

  976. anything from the Lord being

  977. double-minded and unstable in all his

  978. ways here's what I need you to hear loud

  979. and clear when it says in faith

  980. without doubting it's not saying that

  981. you're never going to stumble underneath

  982. the weight of struggle are you hearing

  983. me on that you're you're not it's not

  984. saying you'll never struggle and stumble

  985. underneath the weight of a

  986. trial what it's saying is that you would

  987. live with a commitment to walk the road

  988. that you're on that you don't have one

  989. foot on the narrow road and another on

  990. the wide path you're not making exit

  991. strategies if you've ever watched

  992. Olympian Sprint which

  993. again it's one of those things but like

  994. if you've ever watched an Olympian

  995. Sprint they'll do so out of a Block

  996. they'll have both of their feet on a

  997. single block he's saying don't put one

  998. foot on one block and one on another and

  999. feel like you're going to end up going

1000. in the right direction or you're going

1001. to be able to do so without struggling

1002. even more he says you need to make sure

1003. that you are running wholeheartedly in

1004. the direction that I've called you to go

1005. and not have your feet all over the

1006. place walk with me come hell or high

  1007. water walk with me

1008. Romans chapter 8:8 says consider the

1009. sufferings of this present time they are

1010. not worth comparing with the glory that

1011. is going to be revealed to us anybody

1012. grateful for that John 16:33 says you

    John 16:33

1013. will have suffering in this world but be

1014. courageous because I have conquered the

1015. world if you're someone in here and

1016. you're not a believer in Jesus let me

1017. tell you something really really

  1018. difficult

  1019. I don't know why you're going through

  1020. what you're going through hopefully it's

1021. the grace of God trying to get a hold of

1022. you but if you're in here and you you

1023. don't know Jesus it it's difficult to

1024. know what exactly is going on here I

1025. feel like all of this is for

1026. not but if you're a believer in Christ

1027. Jesus you've already been told that

  1028. suffering is

1029. coming but you've got Eternal

1030. hope in the fact that through the resur

  1031. resurrection of Jesus

1032. Christ there is nothing that you cannot

1033. experience the Triumph through God

1034. over y'all hear me on

  1035. that

1036. like I had two people over the last

1037. year that I was walking with and praying

1038. for in a very serious way over a serious

  1039. health

1040. issue one of them I did their

1041. funeral and the other one I can hug

  1042. their

1043. neck and kind of privately someone came

1044. to me at one point and said hey

1045. um how do you make sense of one person

1046. living and another one dying why would

1047. God heal one person and not heal the

1048. other and I said God healed

  1049. both God healed

1050. both you either believe in the

1051. resurrection of Jesus Christ or you

1052. don't that's where the rubber meets the

1053. road you can do whatever you want to do

1054. to me in this life you can put me in a

1055. grave and the truth of the matter is I

  1056. ain't

1057. there I am eternally secure in

1058. him tuning a piano can

  1059. exceed 20

1060. tons of tension on a

1061. string and if you want to play Beautiful

1062. music you will be tested

1063. and it's in those great trials that you

1064. find that God's producing something

  1065. profound in

1066. you because there's nothing worse in the

1067. world than having a bunch of people that

1068. feel like they deserve and are entitled

1069. to things going the way that they want

1070. to and they have character that cannot

1071. sustain so much as the wind blowing them

  1072. the wrong

  1073. direction God I ask

1074. that I ask that you would form us in in

  1075. your

  1076. image powerful

  1077. way God I don't know if there's anyone

1078. in here who's never put their faith in

1079. Jesus but right now if you're someone

1080. who's never put your faith in Christ but

1081. you want to take that step today and you

  1082. want to say hey I I know that I'm a

1083. sinner in need of a savior I know that I

1084. need Jesus Christ in my life that I

1085. don't want all of this to be for not but

1086. I want to surrender my life to him not

1087. just for him to save me but I am

1088. underneath his lordship that I might

1089. find myself being transformed in a

1090. remarkable way if that's you would you

1091. just put your hand up if you could be so

1092. bold and pray with me and say father I'm

  1093. a sinner in need of a

1094. savior I believe Jesus Christ lived the

1095. perfect life that I could not and died

1096. the death that I deserved upon the cross

1097. I believe that his blood covers my sins

1098. past present and future and I am

1099. repenting of my sins and putting my

1100. faith in his finished work on the cross

1101. I believe he was buried in a tomb for

1102. three days and that he rose to life

1103. again and I believe that I can have life

  1104. In His

1105. Name Lord for those of us that are

1106. encountering deep struggle and trial I

1107. ask right now that we would find

1108. ourselves on our face at this altar that

1109. we might have people that have

1110. experienced the same thing come around

1111. us and be able to testify to the fact

1112. that it is in those great trials that we

1113. often see that you are

1114. near so clearly that we

  1115. experience transformation in a

  1116. remarkable

1117. way Lord would we we cry out to you this

1118. morning we love you we praise you and we

1119. thank you we ask this in your name
