  1. Amen. He is holy. Friends, if you can

  2. give me just a second. We have this

  3. beautiful, beautiful problem that God

  4. has given and entrusted to us. We

  5. continue to be out of room at this

  6. service. That's a good thing, but it's

  7. also somewhat inconvenient at times. So,

  8. here's what I would like. If you are

  9. willing, if there's any room around you,

  10. slide to the middle of your row and

  11. leave the outside seats for people who

  12. are coming in later or people who have

  13. just arrived or in the back and trying

  14. to find a way in here. And let me also

  15. encourage you. If you happen to be a

  16. regular servant and steward in this

  17. house and you might happen to be willing

  18. to step out of your seat and listen to

  19. me holler and scream

  20. outside. There's TVs out there. There

  21. may be other rooms we could we could go

  22. into, but we'd love if you would be

  23. willing to I understand what that may

  24. seem like. We're not kicking you out of

  25. church.

  26. But as a people of God,

  27. we we serve a God who has made

  28. room for you. Thank you, Mr.

  29. Nick. He loves my 5-year-old. Every

  30. Wednesday night, he teaches him God's

  31. word, and I love that man. He is a great

  32. man. But if anybody is willing to give

  33. up their seat, we would appreciate this.

  34. Here's what I'm going to do. As you

  35. slide through, I'm going to pray over us

  36. and then we're going to dive into God's

  37. word. Thank you for your willingness.

  38. Thank you for being here. And if you are

  39. new, let me once again also say thank

  40. you for coming. If you don't have a

  41. seat, hopefully we've got some up there

  42. that are that are uh empty for you. So,

  43. let's pray together. Father God, we love

  44. you so much. God, I thank you for the

  45. ridiculous problem we have that there is

  46. not enough room in this building. But

  47. the beautiful thing is God, you have

  48. made room for each and every one of us

  49. who have called upon the name of Jesus

  50. to be

  51. saved. God, we will deal with parking

  52. issues. God, we will deal with any type

  53. of uncomfortable setting that there

  54. could possibly be as long as people are

  55. hearing the

  56. gospel and people come to faith in

  57. Christ. We want to honor you with our

  58. life today. Thank you for this word.

  59. Thank you for the privilege we we have

  60. to hear your word. May we live it out.

  61. We pray all this in the name of Jesus.

  62. Amen. And

  63. amen. You can have a seat. Good morning.

  64. If you have a copy of God's word, and I

  65. hope that you do, whether it be one of

  66. these things, physical things, anybody

  67. who got a Bible, or if you need to

  68. scroll and find a place on your phone or

  69. your tablet, we're going to continue

  70. through our journey in the book of

  71. James. James chapter 1, we're in this

    James 1 chapter mention

  72. collection of conversations that we have

  73. entitled Walk the Walk. And as you've

  74. been told repeatedly and we've heard

  75. over the last couple of weeks of what

  76. this is, James is writing a letter to

  77. Jewish believers in Christ scattered

  78. across the Roman Empire sometime between

  79. the middle and end of the first century.

  80. And what we find in this letter is that

  81. James is not writing a letter the same

  82. way maybe some of the other letters of

  83. the New Testament have been written.

  84. When we read some of Paul's letters,

  85. Paul often spends a few chapters talking

  86. about what we need to believe and then a

  87. few chapters on how we should live in

  88. light of what we believe. But James is

  89. writing a letter sort of like a text

  90. message to some friends about you best

  91. get your life together. Are you with me?

  92. So, it seems like it could be scattered,

  93. but there's some themes that weave in

  94. and out. This is wisdom he wants to give

  95. to them as these men and women are

  96. living in an increasingly hostile world

  97. against those who claim to follow Jesus.

  98. And so, as a result, we have James

  99. writing this letter. And if you remember

  100. from a few weeks ago, James is the the

  101. brother of Jesus, a leader in the local

  102. church at Jerusalem. And he's sharing

  103. this information that would likely have

  104. gone to a variety of churches that are

  105. popping up across the Roman

  106. Empire. And James is wanting us to know

  107. over and over what it looks like to walk

  108. the walk. To not just say we follow

  109. Christ, but live for Christ on a daily

  110. basis. James chapter 1. Want to remind

    James 1 chapter mention

  111. you we believe as a church that the word

  112. of God is always relevant for our life

  113. today. So that while James is writing to

  114. a historical audience in the past, the

  115. word of God through James is still for

  116. us today. Can I get an amen? Are you

  117. with me?

  118. Listen, the more you talk, the faster I

  119. go, the quicker we're done. Got it?

  120. This is foundational for our faith.

  121. Without the word of God and the spirit

  122. of God helping us apply the word of God

  123. into our lives, we are left only to our

  124. own human devices, which will utterly

  125. fail us. The word of God is relevant for

  126. our life today.

  127. James chapter 1, beginning in verse 18.

    James 1 chapter mention

  128. We're going to primarily focus on verses

  129. 19- 26, but I want to give us a little

  130. bit of context. Starting in verse 18,

  131. James writes, "Of his own will," that is

  132. God's will. This is what God has done.

  133. He has brought us forth by the word of

  134. truth, that we should be a kind of first

  135. fruits of his creatures.

  136. Know this, my beloved brothers. Let

  137. every person be quick to hear, slow to

  138. speak, slow to anger. All right, have a

  139. great night. And

  140. um we'll get into that. You feel a

  141. little nervous right now? Me, too. Try

  142. preaching it. For the anger of man does

  143. not produce the righteousness of God.

  144. Therefore, put away all filthiness and

  145. rampant wickedness, and receive with

  146. meekness the implanted word, which is

  147. able to save your souls. But be doers of

  148. the word and not hearers only, deceiving

  149. yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of

  150. the word and not a doer, he is like a

  151. man who looks intently at his natural

  152. face in a mirror. For he looks at

  153. himself and then he goes away, and at

  154. once he forgets what he was like. But

  155. the one who looks into the perfect law,

  156. the law of liberty, and that person

  157. perseveres, being no hearer who forgets,

  158. but a doer who

  159. acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

  160. So if anyone thinks that he's a

  161. religious person and does not bridle his

  162. tongue, but deceives his heart, this

  163. person's religion is worth worthless.

  164. We're going to pray. We're going to dive

  165. into this. And I simply want you to be

  166. to consider this that the words we say

  167. and the words that we

  168. obey will always show us who has the

  169. real authority over our

  170. life. The words that we say and the

  171. words that we

  172. obey expose in the depths of our hearts

  173. who has authority.

  174. And my prayer today is that we will

  175. submit ourselves to the word of God and

  176. understanding that God's

  177. word is not only what governs and guides

  178. what we say, but it must be obeyed so

  179. that we can live a life that pleases

  180. him. Let's pray together. Father, we

  181. thank

  182. you. Thank you for our time together.

  183. Thank you for the people who are here.

  184. Thank you for those who are watching

  185. online who couldn't make it today. God,

  186. we pray in advance for the work you're

  187. going to do in our hearts today. We pray

  188. in advance for all of the life change

  189. that's going to take place this week as

  190. we celebrate you so many different times

  191. in different ways. We celebrate the

  192. death, burial, and resurrection of

  193. Christ. And we thank you. We are utterly

  194. lost without

  195. you, God. We need you. I need you. Fill

  196. us with your spirit in such a way that

  197. we can walk out of here rejuvenated and

  198. encouraged to live a life that honors

  199. you. We pray all this in the name of

  200. Jesus. Amen. And amen. The words we say

  201. and the words we

  202. obey will reveal who has authority over

  203. our lives. I love how James gives us

  204. this perspective. He wants to show us

  205. what holy living looks like. But he

  206. anchors this in verse 18. And I want you

  207. to understand something. for us to get

  208. to this place about being doers of the

  209. word and to get to this place where we

  210. can talk about being slow to anger.

  211. We'll get there. Being quick to listen

  212. and slow to speak and slow to anger. I

  213. want you to see how he shows us so

  214. clearly what's rooted in our hearts.

  215. Listen to what he says in verse 18. of

  216. his own will. He brought us forth by the

  217. word of truth that we should be a kind

  218. of first fruits of his creatures. I want

  219. you to see this. God has given us new

  220. life from his own will. Not

  221. begrudgingly. God didn't say, "I guess

  222. I'll save that one." No. Out of love and

  223. joy and desire from his will. He has

  224. given new life to us.

  225. And James goes on to tell us that God

  226. has given us new life through the word

  227. of truth. At some point in our life, if

  228. we're a follower of Jesus, we heard the

  229. gospel message that we are lost and

  230. depraved. That we are far from God. That

  231. even being enemies of God, God in his

  232. gracious love towards us, you know what

  233. he did? He sent his

  234. son who lived the life we could never

  235. live in perfect obedience to die the

  236. death that we deserve, rose again from

  237. the power of the spirit to conquer death

  238. and to assure us we can have new life

  239. when we call upon his name we can be

  240. saved. God from his own will has given

  241. us new life and through his own word.

  242. But I want you to see what he says here.

  243. I love how James summarizes what this

  244. looks like. God has given us new life

  245. for his own glory. How does he say that

  246. in in verse 18? He says this. So that

  247. why have we been saved? So we can just

  248. go to heaven one day. Have you thought

  249. about that? If the only purpose for your

  250. salvation was for you to be somewhere

  251. with Jesus only, why don't we go right

  252. now? Ever thought about it?

  253. The purpose of your salvation is not

  254. just to be with him one day, but it's

  255. right now to live as the first fruits of

  256. his creatures. The first fruits would

  257. have been the first portion of a crop

  258. that that the the Jewish people would

  259. bring to God as an offering. And as a

  260. result, what we see is that James is

  261. using this language of first fruits to

  262. say that we as saved people, as God's

  263. new creation, we are the appetizer of

  264. what God is going to do in the future of

  265. all creation when he makes all things

  266. new. And so, as a result, we are the

  267. first fruits. We are the mozzarella

  268. stick. Can I say mozzarella sticks?

  269. Yeah. Yeah. Or the chips and queso. My

  270. kids. All right. Some of y'all eat

  271. salad. No thank you. All right. So, the

  272. mozzarella sticks to the entire entree

  273. that is to come. When God redeems all of

  274. his creation, what was broken will be

  275. made

  276. new. And so, in light of this, this is

  277. what James wants you to to root this

  278. living

  279. in. We are the first fruits. So, what

  280. does it look like to be the first fruits

  281. of God's redeeming work on this earth?

  282. How do we live in such a way that we

  283. show that God is renewing us already and

  284. that he's going to renew everything in a

  285. time to come? I'm glad you

  286. asked. If we're going to be a

  287. people who reflect the redeeming work of

  288. God on a daily basis, we need to be a

  289. people who are careful with our own

  290. words. James says this, "Know this."

  291. That's his way of saying, "Hey, hey,

  292. listen

  293. up." Got school teachers in the room or

  294. just parents in general, right? Your

  295. kids, no, we won't get

  296. there. Why is it the fourth time that

  297. they

  298. listen? Why? Why is it the fourth time?

  299. And then they're like, "Why are you

  300. raising your voice?" Because the first

  301. three times you didn't hear

  302. me. I'll I'll Lord, work on me. We'll

  303. get

  304. there. We're people who are careful with

  305. our own words. Listen to what he says.

  306. Know this, friends. Listen. That's what

  307. he's saying. Know this, my beloved

  308. brothers. Let every person be quick to

  309. hear, slow to speak, slow to

  310. anger. I'm just going to stop right now

  311. and and tell you that that I'm not good

  312. at this. Can I get a sympathetic head

  313. nod from somebody in the room? That I'm

  314. not the only sinner in the building.

  315. That would be great. Let every person be

  316. quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow

  317. to become angry. I feel like my entire

  318. day is the reverse of

  319. that. From the moment my kids get up and

  320. they can't find the same clothes that

  321. they put out the night before. Do you

  322. know what I'm

  323. saying? It magically just

  324. disappeared. Socks that don't match,

  325. shoes that are gone, they were right

  326. there.

  327. So often in my life, I'm not going to

  328. ask you to raise your hand to confess,

  329. but we can be honest enough that give me

  330. a little head nod that that this this

  331. isn't easy. That's why James wants to

  332. give this

  333. encouragement. Perhaps even maybe last

  334. night you were trying to get all four of

  335. your children to bed hypothetically and

  336. one of them just didn't want to go to

  337. bed hypothetically.

  338. Then you were up all night trying to

  339. figure out how am I going to preach this

  340. after Lord Jesus

  341. help. Maybe this morning you were

  342. rushing out the door to get here and you

  343. had one kid with one shoe had a dress

  344. shoe on and a flip-flop on the wrong

  345. feet. Yeah, it

  346. is. Or you had a kid that the same

  347. sweater they wore every single Sunday

  348. now all of a sudden is too

  349. itchy. I'm just saying hypothetically.

  350. Hypothetically or maybe as my daughter

  351. reminded me as I was studying last night

  352. in my office, she came downstairs and

  353. she asked me what I was preaching

  354. on. I had a lot of things I could have

  355. told her. I said we'd be looking at this

  356. passage in James and about being people

  357. who honor Jesus with the way that we

  358. speak and to be quick to listen and slow

  359. to speak and slow to become angry. And

  360. I'm telling you without missing the

  361. beat, I am not making this up. Not

  362. kidding. That sweet, precious baby who

  363. looks just like her mama but acts just

  364. like me had the

  365. audacity to look at me and go,

  366. "Well, this family's got a lot of work

  367. left to do on that.

  368. I I I really didn't know whether to

  369. laugh or cry. I'm serious. I I She's not

  370. wrong. But it it stung. It

  371. hurt. I have so much room for growth in

  372. this area in my own life. And and I'm

  373. I'm optimistic that maybe you do, too.

  374. So, what is James really referring to?

  375. Is he talking about how we speak about

  376. God's word or or or receive God's word

  377. or or is he talking about how we speak

  378. to other people? And and I want to just

  379. simply say it's

  380. yes, it's both. Because here's the

  381. situation. James is going to give us

  382. more instructions about our speech and

  383. about bridling and taming our tongue in

  384. chapter 3. But right now, if James's

  385. primary encouragement is about the way

  386. in which we speak to other people, then

  387. all the more we should be cautious in

  388. the way that we communicate with God. We

  389. should be conscientious about the way

  390. that we listen to the word of God. And I

  391. think this is helpful for several

  392. reasons. Here's the deal. When we comm

  393. the way we communicate with other people

  394. through our words and our actions is an

  395. influence and indicator of how well we

  396. are communicating with God. If I am too

  397. hurried to hear and to listen for

  398. understanding when someone speaks to me

  399. or if I'm too quick to toss a hurtful

  400. grenade of words toward somebody who is

  401. bothering me or cut me off in traffic.

  402. When I do those

  403. things, it reveals that my heart is most

  404. likely not prepared to hear clearly from

  405. God. When I rush to defend myself or to

  406. launch an assault against someone else

  407. with my words and actions, what it does

  408. is it exposes a deficiency in both the

  409. quality and the quantity of time that I

  410. am spending with God in his

  411. word. And for this reason, James tells

  412. us why we must be cautious with our

  413. words. He says in verse 20, "This is why

  414. for the anger of man does not produce

  415. the righteousness of God." Let me pause

  416. for just a second because we may get

  417. confused with this wording and this

  418. phrase of the righteousness of God. This

  419. verse can make it sound as though if I

  420. just get my act together, if I'm just

  421. kind with my words and my tones, if I

  422. say all the right things, then then God

  423. will accept me. and then I will get the

  424. righteousness of

  425. God. That's not what the scripture

  426. intends here. I want to be very clear.

  427. There is nothing that you and I can do

  428. on our own to earn or produce the

  429. righteousness of God. We are saved by

  430. God's grace through faith in Christ. And

  431. it's his perfect obedience that applies

  432. to our life when we trust in Jesus. You

  433. and I are made righteous in God's eyes,

  434. not because of any of our own works, but

  435. because of the work of Jesus on the

  436. cross.

  437. When we declare that Jesus is Lord, we

  438. are

  439. covered in the righteous robes of

  440. Christ. We've died to our old life.

  441. We've been raised to new life. And this

  442. is the kind of righteousness of God that

  443. Paul speaks about in his letters like in

  444. 1 Corinthians chapter 5 21 when he says

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  445. God made him Jesus who knew no sin to

  446. become sin so that we might become the

  447. righteousness of God. You see when Paul

  448. speaks and writes about the

  449. righteousness of God, he's speaking

  450. about right standing before God. That I

  451. have been forgiven of my sins because of

  452. Christ's death, burial, and

  453. resurrection. and I am in right

  454. alignment,

  455. justified, in right relationship with

  456. God. But when James speaks about being a

  457. person who sees this anger and how it

  458. doesn't produce the righteousness of

  459. God, he's not speaking about right

  460. standing before God. I've got that. I'm

  461. in Christ, God's will through his word

  462. for his glory. I've got that. He's

  463. speaking about right living every single

  464. day. You see, the fact is, we can't

  465. produce the righteousness that saves us,

  466. but God still has a standard for us to

  467. live up to, to reflect his goodness.

  468. So if we're going to be a people who are

  469. the first fruits, the appetizer of God's

  470. redeeming work of all creation, we need

  471. to be careful with our words because the

  472. anger that comes from those moments and

  473. those situations in our life does not

  474. reflect the goodness and graciousness of

  475. God. So how do we even begin to deal

  476. with

  477. this? I don't know. I don't know.

  478. But luckily, James helps

  479. us. I was thinking about this because

  480. just last week or two weeks ago, I was

  481. in a car rider line, which I hate. Can I

  482. get a head nod? Anybody understand what

  483. I'm saying? You better follow the rules.

  484. Don't cut people off. You knew way back

  485. on then that you supposed to get

  486. over. But what irks me the most, I have

  487. three kids at one school, another kid

  488. across town. Takes me an hour every day

  489. to drive my kids to school.

  490. Um, what world?

  491. What irks me the most is when I go to

  492. drop my children off, my three oldest at

  493. their school, they have little numbers

  494. at the polls. Does everybody understand

  495. what I'm saying? Where you're supposed

  496. to drop them off. So, you can drop them

  497. off all the way to poll

  498. 15. I got no problem because the curb

  499. come goes around. There's a sidewalk. I

  500. kick my kids out as soon as we get into

  501. the parking lot. I'm like, "Look, you're

  502. good right there. Go ahead and walk. Be

  503. with Jesus. He'll guide you. He'll guide

  504. you all the way. You don't need to be at

  505. the numbers. Just go.

  506. But here's the problem here. There's one

  507. particular person. I hope you're not

  508. here. I

  509. hope luckily I live on the west side of

  510. Orlando, not not here in Wind. So, okay.

  511. Um, this particular person who I seem to

  512. get behind every

  513. day, they don't drop their child off at

  514. at number

  515. 15. They don't even drop their child off

  516. if they're at number seven.

  517. I watched this car take their kid, not a

  518. kindergartener, a fullg grown fifth

  519. grader, all the way up past number one

  520. to the

  521. door and slowly helped him get the door

  522. open. Got a grown man getting

  523. out, probably a teacher's

  524. aid. And I have some words in my head

  525. that probably don't honor the Lord. I'm

  526. just being

  527. honest. Usually singing something like

  528. Rich Mullen's like, "Holy Jesus." Right?

  529. I'm shaking. Our principal came by. My

  530. window was down. I just looked at her

  531. and I shake my head and Miss Alvarez

  532. said, "Jesus needs to take the wheel."

  533. Right? And I said, "He needs to take

  534. that whole car. Not the wheel. the whole

  535. car by God's grace and for his

  536. glory. I'm a work in progress. I hope

  537. you are, too. But it's those little

  538. things even in my own day. Can I be

  539. honest with you? I I was I was just

  540. telling one of our elders in the back

  541. earlier that my wife kept asking me,

  542. "Why is it taking so long for you to

  543. finish your message?" I said, "Because

  544. God's

  545. doing way too much in my heart." because

  546. I need to know and I want to understand

  547. God. Why am I so easy to be

  548. angry?

  549. Why? Why have I apologized to my

  550. children for my tone more times in the

  551. last

  552. week than I have in the weeks before?

  553. What is wrong with my heart,

  554. Lord, that I'm so prone to to being

  555. quick to speak and quick to get angry

  556. and I'm not slow to

  557. listen? And I love that James reminds us

  558. of of how we can deal with this. Listen

  559. to what he says in verse 21.

  560. He says, "Therefore, put away all

  561. filthiness and rampant wickedness and

  562. receive with meekness the implanted word

  563. which is able to save your

  564. souls." I believe looking at this, the

  565. antidote to thoughtless words and anger

  566. is ultimately submitting myself to the

  567. word of God.

  568. And in order to do that, James reminds

  569. us that we have to remove the filth

  570. completely in our life and receive the

  571. word of God with

  572. humility. We've been saved by the word

  573. of truth. And now James says, God has

  574. implanted that word in you. So what

  575. exactly does it mean for this word to be

  576. implanted? This is us preaching the

  577. gospel that saved us to ourselves every

  578. day to sustain us and to sanctify

  579. us. The same gospel message that brought

  580. you to Christ and gave you new life is

  581. the same gospel message that we need

  582. every single day. So, how can I deal

  583. with

  584. my tendency towards being very sharp and

  585. critical? I need to pause for just a

  586. moment and remember that God was patient

  587. with me. That God loved me even when I

  588. didn't love him. And that God loved me

  589. despite my

  590. stupidity. And that God loves me even

  591. now as his child despite my stupidity.

  592. Now this implanted word

  593. It's already

  594. there. The question becomes for all of

  595. us. How receptive is our

  596. heart to that implanted

  597. word? I love the way the Old Testament

  598. has described what God is going to do in

  599. the new covenant with relationship with

  600. Christ.

  601. share just briefly. Jeremiah spoke and

  602. wrote down his prophecy from the Lord.

  603. And the Lord said in Jeremiah 31:33 that

    Jeremiah 31:33

  604. he was going to make a new covenant. And

  605. that covenant I will make with the house

  606. of Israel after those days. This is what

  607. he says. I will put my law within

  608. them and I will write it on their hearts

  609. and I will be their God and they will be

  610. my people.

  611. And in Ezekiel, Ezekiel says something

  612. similar and he was says this that God

  613. God was doing this work in the hearts of

  614. the Israelites that there's coming a day

  615. when I will give you a new heart and a

  616. new spirit I will put within you and I

  617. will remove the heart of stone from your

  618. flesh and give you a heart of flesh and

  619. I will put my spirit within you and

  620. cause you to walk in my statutes and be

  621. careful to obey my rules and you will

  622. dwell in the land that I gave to your

  623. fathers and you shall be my people and I

  624. will be your God.

  625. Friends, the only way you and I can deal

  626. with our careless words is to remind

  627. ourselves of the word of

  628. God. The same word of truth that saved

  629. us is the same word that's been

  630. implanted in us to sustain us and

  631. sanctify us. Jesus said in his high

  632. priestly prayer, and I love this. Do you

  633. remember Jesus said, "Don't take them

  634. out of the world." Could you imagine if

  635. they were overhearing that

  636. going, "We're going to snatch us up out

  637. of here. This place is

  638. rotten." Jesus in this high priestly

  639. prayer in verse 16, chapter 17 of John

  640. said, "They're not of this world just as

  641. I'm not of this world. Sanctify them in

  642. the truth. Your word is truth.

  643. As you sent me into the world, so I have

  644. sent them into the world. And for their

  645. sake, I consecrate or set myself apart

  646. that they may also be sanctified in

  647. truth. If we want to be a people who are

  648. careful with our words and emotions

  649. towards God and to others, then we need

  650. to cultivate a heart that is receptive

  651. to the word of God. You remember how

  652. Jesus said it in this parable of the

  653. seed and the sewer? That sewer went out

  654. and tossed seeds all over the place in

  655. Matthew 13. It's the only par one of the

  656. only parables that are recorded in

  657. Matthew, Mark, and Luke. And Jesus gives

  658. an interpretation of the parable because

  659. the disciples didn't get it. And Jesus

  660. like, "Hold up. This is what I

  661. mean." But the sewer scattered seed all

  662. over the place. And the the seed fell in

  663. different places, hard ground, rocky

  664. ground, and and ground uh that that was

  665. that was good soil that would receive

  666. the seed. And do you remember what

  667. happened in matthew chapter 13? Listen

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  668. to how Jesus

  669. describes what a receptive heart is.

  670. Now, think with me for a second. Often

  671. times, we preach this and it's true.

  672. This is speaking about the gospel, being

  673. receptive to the gospel message. But we

  674. just learned the best way for me to be

  675. sustained in my life and to be

  676. sanctified in my life is to keep

  677. preaching that same gospel message to

  678. myself. Listen to what Jesus says in

  679. Matthew chapter 13:1 18.

  680. He says this, "Hear the parable of the

  681. swer. When anyone hears the word of the

  682. kingdom and doesn't understand it, the

  683. evil one comes and snatches it away.

  684. What has been swn in his heart? This is

  685. what was swn along the path. As for the

  686. one swn on rocky ground, this is the one

  687. who hears the word and immediately

  688. receives it with joy and yet has no root

  689. in himself, but endures for just a

  690. little while. And then when tribulation

  691. or persecution arises on account of the

  692. world, immediately he falls away. As for

  693. what was sown among thorns, this is the

  694. one who hears the word but the cares of

  695. the world and the deceitfulnesses

  696. deceitfulness of riches choke the word

  697. and it proves unfruitful. As for what

  698. was sown on good soil, this is the one

  699. who hears the word understands it and he

  700. indeed bears fruit and yields in one

  701. case 100fold and another 60 and in

  702. another 30. Friends, the readiness of

  703. our hearts determines the depth of the

  704. word and how deep it gets into us. And

  705. the depth of the root dictates the

  706. abundance of the fruit in your life. If

  707. we want to be men and women who are

  708. careful with our words, we need to

  709. recognize the word has been implanted.

  710. But we also need receptive hearts where

  711. God has torn up the ground so much so

  712. that the seed can get in there so deeply

  713. that it has strong roots.

  714. Why? So when that lady doesn't drop her

  715. kid off at number

  716. 15, I can sing it as

  717. well and move on with my

  718. life. My question for you is there an

  719. eagerness to hear from God? Are you

  720. consistently putting yourself in a

  721. position to to to hear from

  722. God? I'm convinced of this. Listen, as

  723. James moves forward with what he wants

  724. to share with us, a heart that is

  725. receptive to the word of God is a heart

  726. that will be obedient to the word of

  727. God. If we want to be living as first

  728. fruits of God's redeeming work, we're

  729. careful with our own words and we're

  730. obedient to the words of God. You might

  731. be familiar with what James says in this

  732. passage and you've probably heard it

  733. over and over, but listen again to what

  734. he says. Be but be doers of the word and

  735. not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

  736. For if anyone is a hearer of the word

  737. and not a doer, he's like a man who

  738. looks intently at his natural face in

  739. the mirror. For he looks at himself and

  740. he goes away and then he forgets what he

  741. was like. But the one who looks into the

  742. perfect law, the law of liberty, and

  743. perseveres, being no hearer who forgets,

  744. but a doer who acts, he will be blessed

  745. in his doing. So, James gives another

  746. strong command and a warning and then

  747. illustrates what it looks like for our

  748. hearts not to be receptive to God's word

  749. and for us to not be obedient to God's

  750. word. Luke said something a couple of

  751. weeks ago that that's still just been

  752. sitting with me. Something something to

  753. this

  754. effect. He said something like this. We

  755. can't claim salvation from Christ

  756. without submission to Christ.

  757. And I was like, "Oh, that hold

  758. on. I'm gonna use it." But I thought

  759. more and more about it. We live in a

  760. world in a society right now where

  761. everybody calls themselves Christians,

  762. but very few are being obedient.

  763. And God, help us as those who are here

  764. in this

  765. room that we won't be the type of people

  766. who speak it with our mouth and we hear

  767. the word but we refuse to do what God

  768. has called us to do. It's a recipe for

  769. spiritual disaster. I've spent so much

  770. of my life, my adult life in Christian

  771. higher education. I've got multiple

  772. degrees.

  773. I I quit one after 10 years because

  774. well, my wife's already a real doctor,

  775. so it didn't matter if I got letters

  776. behind my

  777. name. I've taught pastors all over the

  778. world. I've taught for three different

  779. universities. I've been around some

  780. smart people. And let me tell you very

  781. plainly, knowledge of God's word does

  782. not guarantee obedience to God's

  783. word. And even more so, church

  784. attendance does not prevent

  785. disobedience.

  786. Is knowledge good? Absolutely. Is church

  787. attendance good? Absolutely. But none of

  788. those

  789. things make us obey God's word. We

  790. cannot obey what we don't know. But you

  791. and I can certainly disobey what we

  792. already know. My dad used to say this

  793. all the time. He would say, "If we could

  794. just obey 50% of what we already know,

  795. we would be 100% better off spiritually

  796. than we are now."

  797. I was like, I gave him a stank face.

  798. Man, that's

  799. good. It's possible to hear the word, to

  800. come to church, and never see life

  801. change.

  802. Why? Because we're not obeying what God

  803. has called us to

  804. do. James tells us in verse 22, we

  805. deceive ourselves if we're only hearers

  806. and not doers.

  807. In one of the most tragic passages and

  808. and maybe one of the most haunting

  809. passages in all of scripture, do you

  810. remember what Jesus said at the end of

  811. the sermon on the mount in Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  812. chapter 7? Jesus said this. Not everyone

  813. who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter

  814. the

  815. kingdom.

  816. What? Well, they're saying Lord,

  817. Lord. They're claiming that that Christ

  818. has saved them. And he goes on, "But the

  819. one who does what?" Who does the will of

  820. my father in

  821. heaven, that's the one who will enter

  822. the kingdom of heaven? And on that day,

  823. many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we

  824. not prophesy in your name and cast out

  825. demons in your name and do many mighty

  826. works in your name? And then I will

  827. declare to them, I never knew you.

  828. Depart from me, you workers of

  829. lawlessness. It's the same thing in John

  830. 5 when Jesus was speaking to the

  831. religious leaders who had all the

  832. knowledge, had memorized the first five

  833. books of our Old Testament. They knew

  834. what the word said, but they didn't

  835. oy. Jesus told them in Matthew

    Matthew 5:37

  836. 5:37, he kept telling them over and over

  837. in so many different

  838. ways. And he said to them, "The Father

  839. who sent me has himself borne witness

  840. about me. His voice you have never

  841. heard. His form you've never seen. And

  842. you don't have the word abiding, living,

  843. resting in you. For you don't believe

  844. the one that he sent. You search all the

  845. scriptures because you think in them you

  846. have eternal life. And it is they that

  847. bear witness about me. Jesus said, "Yet

  848. you refuse to come to me so that you may

  849. have life." Friends, let's not miss it.

  850. How in the world can we be a people who

  851. have receptive hearts to the word of

  852. God? We're careful with our words and

  853. that we can then live in a way that is

  854. obedient. I'm glad you asked the picture

  855. that James paints for us in chapter 1

  856. verse 25 when he says the one who looks

  857. into the perfect law, the law of liberty

  858. and perseveres being no hearer who

  859. forgets but a doer who acts he will be

  860. blessed in his doing. The point here is

  861. not necessarily the quality of looking.

  862. There's two different words that James

  863. uses to talk about that and I've heard

  864. lots of sermons about. Well, they

  865. stooped down and looked and they looked

  866. for just a little while. The point is

  867. this. One of them remembered what they

  868. looked

  869. like and one of them

  870. didn't. So, what is it in our lives?

  871. What does this mean for us? It means

  872. when the word of God confronts my life,

  873. I can't look at it and walk away the

  874. same. when it rips open my heart and

  875. exposes the depths where nobody else can

  876. get to and I'll let nobody else see.

  877. It's in those moment God is calling for

  878. my

  879. obedience and I have to remember his

  880. word consistently in my life.

  881. Friends, it's one thing to position

  882. ourselves to hear from

  883. God, but it's an entirely other

  884. thing to have a heart that says yes to

  885. whatever the word

  886. says. I don't

  887. know what the last thing was that God

  888. told you to do, but I do know this.

  889. There's blessing in

  890. obedience. And if you're not sure what

  891. to

  892. do, where to go, how to live, simply go

  893. back to the last thing you remember him

  894. saying and say

  895. yes. Our hearts are so prone to forget.

  896. This is why throughout scripture, the

  897. children of God would set up monuments

  898. and stones when they crossed the river.

  899. This is why throughout the Old

  900. Testament, God told his people,

  901. "Remember, remember remember." This is

  902. why in what's known as the shama of

  903. Deuteronomy chapter 6, which means to

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  904. hear and to

  905. obey. In Deuteronomy chapter 6, Moses

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  906. wrote this from the Lord to the people

  907. and said, "Here, O Israel, the Lord our

  908. God, the Lord is one. You shall love the

  909. Lord your God with all your heart, soul,

  910. mind, and

  911. strength. And these words I command you

  912. today shall be on your heart. Teach them

  913. diligently to your children. You shall

  914. talk of them when you sit in your house

  915. and when you walk by the way, when you

  916. lie down, when you rise all the time,

  917. you shall bind them as a sign on your

  918. hand. You shall write them or or have

  919. them as frontlets between your eyes. You

  920. shall write them on the doorpost of your

  921. house and on your gates. And when the

  922. Lord God brings you into the land that

  923. he swore to your fathers and gives you

  924. all this good stuff, when your bellies

  925. are full, when you have crops that are

  926. abundant, this is what God said.

  927. Take

  928. care lest you forget the Lord who

  929. brought you out of the land of

  930. Egypt. If we want to be people who have

  931. the first who are the first fruits of

  932. God's redeeming work and we want to show

  933. and display the goodness of God, we need

  934. to be careful with our words preaching

  935. the gospel that's implanted in our

  936. hearts already. Preaching it to

  937. ourselves on a daily basis. And we need

  938. to put ourselves in front of the word of

  939. God. be receptive to the word. And we

  940. need to walk in obedience by remembering

  941. all that God has done and all that God

  942. has said over our lives, lest we forget.

  943. So, how can you

  944. remember? Oh,

  945. man. Psalm 1, blessed is the man who who

  946. walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

  947. nor sits in the seat of of sinners or

  948. sits in the seat of scoffers, but his

  949. delight is in the law of the Lord. He

  950. meditates on it day and night. Psalm

  951. 119, right? Right. I've hidden the word

  952. in my heart so that I might not sin

  953. against God. We need to fill our hearts

  954. like sponges with the word of God so

  955. that when we're squeezed, it's not that

  956. nasty bucket water from school. Y'all

  957. know what I'm talking about? That always

  958. look like like like chocolate

  959. milk. But when we're squeezed, it's the

  960. word of God that comes out. Amen.

  961. This is what Jesus said. If you abide in

  962. my word, you are truly my disciples and

  963. you will know the truth and the truth

  964. will set you

  965. free. I'm

  966. curious if we understand that obedience

  967. to the word of God is the greatest

  968. evidence of a life that has been

  969. changed. We have the gospel implanted in

  970. us. We have the spirit living within us.

  971. and we now have the freedom to obey.

  972. What a privilege. What an honor to be

  973. able to walk in newness of life. Let me

  974. close with this. If if if every

  975. Wednesday night or 12 to 14 weeks in the

  976. fall and the spring, some of you don't

  977. know that on Wednesday night there's

  978. stuff that happens here. If you don't

  979. have a kid, you may not know, but on

  980. Wednesday nights, we have a little thing

  981. for elementary school age kids and

  982. preschoolers called Awana.

  983. And shout out to Wana and Aana workers.

  984. Thank you, Mr.

  985. Nick. And and I have the distinct

  986. privilege of being with my almost

  987. seven-year-old in the kindergarten

  988. class and spending all the time with him

  989. and all that comes with that with his

  990. sweet little uh uh neurode divergent

  991. self.

  992. And what I'm

  993. learning is if I want to know the word

  994. better, have a receptive heart, and if I

  995. want to live in

  996. obedience, the greatest display I've

  997. seen

  998. recently has been sitting in that

  999. kindergarten classroom listening to some

  1000. sweet little

1001. kids say the books of the

1002. Bible memorize scriptures when some of

  1003. them can't even read

1004. yet. My seven-year-old who will be eight

1005. next six-year-old who will be seven next

1006. week. I get them confused. We have 8765

1007. right now. It's about to be 8775.

1008. My almost seven-year-old who joined our

  1009. family almost two years

1010. ago came from Haiti who spoke zero

  1011. English and my creole

1012. was we spent six months having a good

1013. time figuring out what we were saying to

1014. one another. Let me tell you why the

1015. word is so important. Let me tell you

1016. why you are so important in the life of

1017. this church. Because there are men and

1018. women every Wednesday night who are

1019. pouring themselves into our children

1020. here. Those who have children, those who

1021. don't have children, young and old,

1022. investing, stewarding their time and

1023. their heart with these kids. And just

1024. last week on our final Aana night,

  1025. my almost

1026. seven-year-old said, "All the books of

  1027. the New Testament

1028. And and if you only

  1029. knew how far we've

1030. come. He wants to come into the next

1031. service. We said, "You stay with Miss

1032. Katarina and Miss Madison in the back."

1033. But if you knew how far we've

1034. come, you would understand the power of

  1035. the word of

1036. God. You would understand why I need the

1037. word of God when I'm dealing with my

1038. child. And I see people in here who are

  1039. there every

1040. Wednesday. And I thank you, Miss

1041. Melanie. Mr. Nick, for loving my

  1042. fouryear-old,

1043. five-year-old. Think of Miss Gabriella,

1044. who usually sits right there, who is

  1045. with my

1046. oldest. Think about Miss Lindsay

1047. Wages, who always listens to my

  1048. seven-year-old say her verses.

1049. You matter when you walk in obedience

  1050. because my kids need

1051. you. So maybe this morning your step of

1052. obedience is to finally say, "God, I

1053. want to be a steward of my time and my

1054. treasures and my talents by investing in

1055. these kids." Here's the fun part. You

1056. don't need to know all the scriptures

1057. because you got a book.

1058. Here's the even better part. The more

1059. you go over it with them, guess what?

1060. You also memorize these are the books of

1061. the Bible, the wonderful books of the

1062. Bible. And and then it could just get

1063. stuck. Praise Jesus, but not that

1064. song. So friends, from the bottom of my

1065. heart, let me let me just challenge and

1066. encourage you. If we want to be a people

1067. who are the first fruits of God's

1068. redeeming work, may we be men and women

1069. receptive to God's word so that we can

1070. control our speech. And may we be men

1071. and women who have a receptive heart so

1072. that we can be obedient to the word of

1073. God. And whatever that is, whatever

1074. obedience looks like for you today, hear

1075. me clearly. There is blessing in the

1076. obedience regardless of what you think.

1077. So say yes to whatever God has asked of

1078. you. Father God, we love you. Oh God, we

1079. praise you. Thank you for this time.

1080. Thank you for your word. God, I thank

1081. you. I thank you for every servant and

1082. steward on this stage who leads us in

1083. worship through music. God, I thank you

1084. for Mr. Brad and Miss Lissa who have my

1085. first grader. And I I thank you for all

1086. the people in in the preschool area,

1087. Miss Kim and Miss Ariana. I thank you

1088. for for all the folks who take care of

1089. Miss Michaela, Mr. Garrett, who take

  1090. care of my my

1091. eight-year-old, Miss Madison, and Miss

1092. Katarina, who take care of of my my

1093. six-year-old. Thank you for every single

  1094. steward who has said

1095. yes, who've been receptive to the word

1096. and obedient to the word and invested in

1097. God. May we be men and women who live a

1098. life that honors you, being careful with

1099. what we say, preaching the gospel to

1100. ourselves, and obeying what you've

  1101. called us to

1102. do. God, move in a mighty way in the

1103. life of this church and the life of your

1104. people in Jesus name. Amen.
