  1. all right anybody grateful for our

  2. family advocacy

  3. ministries we got things happening on

  4. multiple levels uh we got local national

  5. international just a beautiful thing to

  6. see the way that God is using this place

  7. to make an impact on the world and so

  8. kudos to everybody in here that has in

  9. some way shape or form been a po a part

  10. of really the point of what it is that

  11. we're going to get into a little bit

  12. here today and so uh welcome to Life for

  13. Church everybody how's everyone feeling

  14. we doing all right we're doing

  15. well it is so great to see you and to be

  16. here with you all this morning i am so

  17. grateful that we are gathered together

  18. in this house and I'm grateful because

  19. we are continuing in a collection of

  20. conversations that we've been in over

  21. the course of the past several weeks

  22. that we have been calling Walk the Walk

  23. and Walk the Walk is simply a collection

  24. or a discussion that has us living and

  25. lingering within the book of James and

  26. James wants to make sure that we're a

  27. people that practice what we preach and

  28. so we've taken this title for the

  29. collection from a famed phrase that says

  30. "Don't just talk the talk but rather

  31. walk the walk." And we understand that

  32. James understands what the Christian

  33. walk looks like he realizes that we live

  34. in a broken and a fallen world that is

  35. sick with sin sin which separates us

  36. from a holy and a perfect God so much so

  37. that Romans 6:23 would say "For the

    Romans 6:23

  38. wages of sin is death which is more than

  39. just a physical death but an eternal

  40. spiritual death eternal separation from

  41. a holy and a perfect God who cannot be

  42. wholly perfect or just if he allows sin

  43. in the camp." We had no way to hope

  44. outside of radical rescuing and

  45. intervening much of which we ended up

  46. celebrating this past week together that

  47. we needed some kind of redemptive work

  48. on our behalf because we could not do it

  49. ourselves and the beautiful thing is

  50. that in a merciful demonstration of

  51. sacrificial love and grace we see that

  52. in Jesus Christ there is salvation yes

  53. uh that Ephesians 1:7 would say in him

    Ephesians 1:7

  54. is redemption the forgiveness of sin and

  55. so we're here today with this

  56. understanding we cannot be saved by our

  57. works we do not achieve our way to God

  58. but rather the good news of the gospel I

  59. is that we receive the free gift that

  60. Jesus Christ has paid for on our behalf

  61. that the good news of the gospel is not

  62. that you and I now have the ability to

  63. kind of make our way up to God the good

  64. news of the gospel is that God came down

  65. to us in the flesh in the person of his

  66. son we're not saved by our works and at

  67. the same time those who have been saved

  68. and are being sanctified will

  69. demonstrate works of an individual that

  70. is walking with the Lord in their life

  71. that we have renewed hearts but we also

  72. have engaged heads and hands in the work

  73. that God is doing in this world on earth

  74. in Orlando as it is in heaven amen and

  75. so we are going to jump into James uh

  76. James 1 26 and 27 is where we're going

  77. to be we're going to go through more

  78. than that uh but we are going to

  79. certainly end up in that spot and find

  80. ourselves making sense of everything

  81. that James is saying at this point

  82. despite the fact that we've had Easter

  83. in between are we recovered from Easter

  84. where are you guys seem like a little

  85. little sleepy i get it not a whole lot

  86. not like you should be sleepy like I'm

  87. sleepy but I get it you know what I mean

  88. uh listen there's people in this place i

  89. almost made a joke last week i want you

  90. to know this i shouldn't tell you this

  91. but I'm going to do it anyway uh there

  92. there I almost made a joke last week but

  93. thank God for plurality and elders and

  94. other pastors because I almost got up

  95. there at the end of every gathering at

  96. Easter and said "See you guys at

  97. Christmas," but they wouldn't let me say

  98. it uh and so here we are gathered

  99. together in this place and if that's you

  100. we're grateful you're here but hey also

  101. this is a place where we're serious

  102. about commitment so uh we are grateful

  103. congratulations to you guys for being

  104. back here the week after Easter the true

  105. saints you

  106. know let's talk about pride james

    James 1:26

  107. 1 verse 26 and 27 says this if anyone

  108. thinks he is religious without

  109. controlling his tongue his religion is

  110. useless and he deceives himself pure and

  111. undefiled religion before God the Father

  112. is this to look after orphans and widows

  113. in their distress and to keep oneself

  114. unstained from the world let's pray

  115. together uh Lord in all seriousness I am

  116. uh grateful for the faithfulness of uh

  117. this house and the people that are

  118. committed to seeing your work happen and

  119. so Lord I'm grateful for these missions

  120. efforts that we are putting forth lord

  121. would we continue to see your hand at

  122. work in the world and would we have a

  123. hand in that that we wouldn't just be a

  124. people that are like if there's issues

  125. in the world then where is God well you

  126. sent us and so Lord would we partner in

  127. that and then Lord today just would we

  128. be a people that gather around your word

  129. with the seriousness of seeing it do a

  130. work within us that we're not just

  131. people that are here to say like "Yes

  132. we're we're aware of what your word has

  133. to say but we we actually want to do

  134. what your word says." And so Lord as we

  135. find ourselves navigating it today would

  136. we look a little bit more like you as a

  137. result of our time in it lord we love

  138. you we praise you and we thank you we

  139. ask these things in Jesus name

  140. amen well uh between 1190 and 1180 BC

  141. the Trojan War ended up being ignited

  142. between the Trojans and Greek allies and

  143. this would be a decadel long siege now

  144. here's what you got to understand is

  145. that uh the Trojan War is somewhat

  146. historical but also also mythological in

  147. nature that uh you'll see that it will

  148. make many appearances throughout history

  149. that you see the Trojan War ends up

  150. appearing in things like Homer's Iliad

  151. and Odyssey it makes a stronger

  152. appearance in Virgil's Anid but it's

  153. historical from the standpoint that yes

  154. there was a city of Troy yes there were

  155. wars that they were engaged in but

  156. somewhat mythological in the sense that

  157. people don't really know about all the

  158. tales that surround them the heroes that

  159. were involved and what we'll see today

  160. even is the utilization of horses in

  161. those battles but for the sake of the

  162. conversation that we're having today

  163. what we know to be somewhat true is that

  164. the Trojan War ends up being ignited

  165. when Paris of Troy ends up eloping and

  166. escaping with Helen who is the wife of

  167. Menelas the Greek king of Sparta he does

  168. not really love the idea of his wife

  169. running away with this individual that

  170. is taking her back to Troy and so as a

  171. result he wants to rally these Greek

  172. kings to go and make war on Troy for

  173. multiple reasons outside of his own

  174. pride and so we see that he'll do so

  175. he'll rally his brother Agamemnon and

  176. others to go and make war on the beaches

  177. of Troy as this happens we see that this

  178. war ends up being ignited over romance

  179. but also over pride honor and super

  180. fragile alliances we see that there will

  181. be famed death after famed death that

  182. Prince Hector of Troy will end up

  183. perishing in this battle the Greek

  184. legend Achilles will end up perishing in

  185. this battle but what we also see is that

  186. the battle actually won't be much of a

  187. battle uh that it's kind of reached a

  188. stalemate after a decade because

  189. relentless Greek determination is

  190. meeting these impenetrable Trojan

  191. defenses and so they're just kind of

  192. skirmishing here and there until one day

  193. something that's pretty unprecedented

  194. ends up happening one day the Trojans

  195. end up going down to make war on the

  196. Greek allies and what they recognize is

  197. that they are not there they've left

  198. that the Greek allies seemingly have

  199. just abandoned their post they're

  200. nowhere to be found they've sailed away

  201. but they haven't left them with nothing

  202. they've left behind a huge wooden horse

  203. as a gift for the Trojans which is

  204. essentially signifying and saying to

  205. them "Hey this is a peace offering we

  206. surrender we want you to know that we're

  207. done with this thing and so can we be

  208. done after a decade?" And in that the

  209. Trojans are feeling victorious they take

  210. this as their own triumph they're like

  211. "Yes we are victorious y'all could do

  212. nothing against us look at us go." And

  213. so they want to bring this wooden horse

  214. this wooden gift into the city gates and

  215. as they do so they want to drink and

  216. celebrate heavily on that evening about

  217. the fact that this war is over and the

  218. problem is that they will but that the

  219. Greeks had actually not left and gone

  220. very far they went far enough away to

  221. look like they had deserted but they

  222. were also close enough to where they

  223. could sail back under the cover of

  224. darkness and they will within that horse

  225. that is now brought into the city gates

  226. what emerged were all of these Greek

  227. soldiers that were hiding on the inside

  228. of it and so they emerge they end up

  229. opening up the gates of Troy which allow

  230. all of the Greek allies that have sailed

  231. back to enter into the city and we see

  232. that they will kill everyone in their

  233. path and they will end up bringing the

  234. women and the children captive under

  235. their regime and the city is sacked

  236. burned and destroyed all in a single

  237. night that we see that previously they

  238. had made no progress none greek soldiers

  239. and swords had not made any kind of

  240. progress against Trojan defenses and

  241. what we see is that there would be one

  242. option that was left on the table and so

  243. they will utilize it that there was one

  244. tool that they could use that could have

  245. a devastating effect and impact words

  246. that they will leave behind a gift that

  247. essentially said to the Trojans "You're

  248. right you guys win we lose we're done

  249. with this thing and because the Trojans

  250. believe this we see that smooth words

  251. will create for them catastrophic

  252. struggle that we see with the Trojan war

  253. and this Trojan horse that will come to

  254. be known as that within it we see

  255. something happening that James is

  256. proclaiming it looks impressive on the

  257. outside like one who thinks he's

  258. religious but on the inside there's

  259. something that you cannot see that we

  260. see that Troy would not fall because

  261. that horse is used like a battering ram

  262. on the city gates but rather we see that

  263. it will end up being something that is

  264. able to sneak into the city when they

  265. previously could not it is not going to

  266. be a sword that creates the advantage it

  267. is going to be speech that creates the

  268. advantage that we see the city will not

  269. fall because they fell to brute strength

  270. but rather because they believe a

  271. beautiful lie and something small ends

  272. up creating something that is more than

  273. a struggle but ends up sacking the whole

  274. city as a result of them believing this

  275. lie and we see that James is going to

  276. really get at the heart of that in this

  277. first verse that we read that small

  278. things that end up happening with our

  279. mouths can end up creating devastating

  280. effects if we're not careful and it can

  281. also indicate who we are and so you see

  282. that in James chapter 1 26 it will say

    James 1 chapter mention

  283. this if anyone thinks he is religious

  284. without controlling his tongue his

  285. religion is useless and he deceives

  286. himself uh which is really something

  287. interesting to note whenever you think

  288. about everything that's been written up

  289. to this point which I'll be honest with

  290. you I don't think there's many of us

  291. that recall what has been written up to

  292. this point can I just be honest with you

  293. like with Easter in between I I think

  294. there's a lot of us that are like "How

  295. did we get here i don't really know what

  296. happened." Uh and so I'm going to take

  297. the liberty today of doing a little bit

  298. of backtracking so we can do some

  299. homework to trace patterns of things

  300. that I said really three weeks ago

  301. things that Pastor Brian said two weeks

  302. ago as we skipped kind of Easter and now

  303. landed here i think some of us get to

  304. verse 26 and 27 and like why are we

  305. talking about widows and orphans and

  306. controlling the tongue how did this

  307. happen and so I'm going to do that as

  308. long as we're okay with that does that

  309. work for us today here a little bit

  310. that's great because that was a

  311. rhetorical question and so James chapter

    James 1:18

  312. 1 verse 18 if you recall he will say

  313. this james says "The Lord by his own

  314. choice gave us birth by the word of

  315. truth." James says "The word of truth is

  316. what the Lord brought us forth by it's

  317. what we were birthed with." What is the

  318. word of truth the word of truth is the

  319. gospel message of Jesus Christ that we

  320. are a people that came to understand

  321. what's been revealed to us in the

  322. scriptures and what that means for us

  323. that we have been saved rescued born

  324. again birthed and brought forth by the

  325. word of truth that the Lord James says

  326. the Lord by his own choice gave you new

  327. life by the word of truth which I think

  328. many of us we can kind of take that

  329. lightly we can be like yeah okay what's

  330. next like I know that obviously and it's

  331. like whoa what wait a minute wait a

  332. minute that's a big deal and I think a

  333. lot of times we don't recognize the

  334. significance of what's being said

  335. because often times we can have a little

  336. bit of slothfulness around our

  337. sinfulness that that we just kind of act

  338. like it's not that big of a deal do you

  339. know how in trouble we were before we

  340. encountered the word of truth like the

  341. scripture does not say I was a smidge

  342. off just just just tad off here just

  343. need a little course correction right

  344. there just No no no it says you were

  345. dead in your sin it doesn't even say

  346. that you were bad in your sin it says

  347. that you were dead i'd rather be bad

  348. than dead it says that you were dead in

  349. your sin but the Lord by his own choice

  350. come on brought you forth gave you life

  351. by the word of truth that's everybody's

  352. testimony in a sentence here i was dead

  353. in my sin and I was made alive again

  354. because of the finished work of Jesus

  355. Christ because of the word of truth that

  356. all of us were made alive we were

  357. forgiven we were made new because we

  358. encountered the word of truth minus all

  359. of the other messy gory details of your

  360. testimony and can I just tell you it

  361. doesn't matter what life was like before

  362. this like your testimony could be the

  363. most chill thing in the world where

  364. you're like I was born in a Christian

  365. home Christian parents went to Christian

  366. camp went to Christian church went to

  367. Christian school even went to a

  368. Christian college look at me go and then

  369. I found myself in a place where it's

  370. like I think I actually need to be a

  371. Christian in order for this to make

  372. sense yes or you could be all the way

  373. over here and you could be like that is

  374. so good for you we would not have hung

  375. out in high school i was drunk stoned

  376. high strip club all things like I was

  377. over here and so we wouldn't have been

  378. friends here's what's crazy you were

  379. both dead in your sin like like you were

  380. both dead in your sin and the truth of

  381. the matter is you realized when you

  382. encountered the word of truth I am in

  383. need of rescue and I'm hearing that

  384. there's a rescuer so as dead as I was in

  385. my sin I am more alive than I ever

  386. imagined that I could be because of the

  387. grace of God available to me in Jesus

  388. Christ that my sin might be more dire

  389. than I care to have

  390. admitted but grace is better than I

  391. deserve and by his own choice the Lord

  392. made us new alive again gave us birth by

  393. the word of truth he goes on to say in

  394. verses 19- 20 "Brothers and sisters

  395. understand this everyone should be quick

  396. to listen slow to speak slow to anger

  397. for human anger does not accomplish

  398. God's righteousness." We're all good at

  399. that

  400. right

  401. no james says "Hey the Lord chose to

  402. give you new life birthed you by the

  403. word of truth you're changed and you're

  404. being changed you're being sanctified

  405. you've been saved and born again but

  406. remember the context of what James is

  407. saying that doesn't mean that you got

  408. Jesus dust sprinkled all over and you

  409. and now you float and just are like you

  410. don't do that like that all happened

  411. within the context of knowing and you

  412. still go through trials that bring with

  413. them temptations and James is saying the

  414. way that you respond to those things is

  415. going to be indicative of the level that

  416. you are living your life in submission

  417. to the Holy Spirit's work in you see how

  418. do you respond to those trials and

  419. temptations and so what we see is he

  420. says "Be quick to listen slow to speak

  421. slow to anger which we're not good at

  422. i've read your

  423. Facebook it's embarrassing."

  424. We have a phrase that we'll say here uh

  425. at the church often and it it really

  426. mimics what snipers in the military say

  427. slow is smooth and smooth is fast i

  428. think the world would be a lot better

  429. off if we weren't interested in

  430. reporting things first but reporting

  431. them accurate and so we don't just want

  432. to say stuff or do stuff just quick

  433. quick and get get all these shots fired

  434. off well who who wants to just pull the

  435. trigger when you actually have a target

  436. like you want to actually hit it what

  437. you're aiming at and so yes could you

  438. shoot quickly yes but rather rather than

  439. making quick decisions make good ones we

  440. want to react in such a way that the

  441. world would know yes there is something

  442. different at work within me yes before I

  443. encountered the word of truth I would

  444. have absolutely gone crazy in this

  445. situation even sometimes I still might

  446. but I will have to apologize for it that

  447. we find ourselves in those circumstances

  448. repeatedly and so he says "Hey be quick

  449. to listen slow to speak slow to anger."

  450. He talks about what doesn't accomplish

  451. God's righteousness and then he talks

  452. about what does accomplish God's

  453. righteousness he says here in verse 21

  454. "Ridding yourselves of all moral filth

  455. and the evil that is so prevalent humbly

  456. receive the implanted word which is able

  457. to save your souls." One of the better

  458. books that I read over the past like 10

  459. years is a book called Educated by Tara

  460. Westover it's a memoir please don't go

  461. buy the book and be like "Do you endorse

  462. everything that she No I don't endorse i

  463. just like to read books sometimes y'all

  464. i know it's a crazy concept sometimes

  465. you can read people who disagree with

  466. you and learn from that and so what we

  467. see is that in this book it was a crazy

  468. tale about how she grew up in the

  469. mountains of Idaho and her family was

  470. super anti-education super doomsday

  471. prepper energy like like super

  472. survivalists like the world's coming to

  473. an end all that stuff and so in the

  474. midst of that though something crazy

  475. happened her mom got really into

  476. essential oils like some of you are

  477. really into essential oils and and we

  478. see I saw the funniest thing somebody

  479. said the other day "Hey let someone

  480. believe in God you believe in essential

  481. oils like it's fine." uh like that that

  482. she got into essential

  483. oils and then she started a business off

  484. of it and it started like profit a lot

  485. and and which was crazy given the

  486. context of where they live and what they

  487. believe and and so Tara Westover talks

  488. about how there was like really crazy

  489. work that she and her family would have

  490. to do in order to live on this mountain

  491. and it would be brutal sometimes and she

  492. said it would not be crazy for us to

  493. come back to the house and we have like

  494. a thirdderee burn or our femur's been

  495. snapped in half and we're like "Mom help

  496. us." And she's like "Let me

  497. think a touch of lavender to the temples

  498. ought to do it." And it's like

  499. "No no that's not that's not helpful my

  500. femur's in half like I need a cast or an

  501. antibiotic i need something helpful not

  502. just what you know the best." The truth

  503. of the matter is that she was providing

  504. superficial remedies to much deeper

  505. wounds and the Lord is not just saying

  506. "Y'all have been birthed by the word of

  507. truth." Now good luck out there kids he

  508. said "No no no there's something deeper

  509. that he's doing in you still." That yes

  510. you've been birthed by the word of truth

  511. but how many of you know you got to have

  512. it buried in you too that it says that

  513. he birthed us but then it says "Humbly

  514. receive have buried in you the

  515. implanted

  516. word." That we've been birthed by the

  517. word of truth but the word of truth is

  518. also buried within

  519. us i think it's one thing for us to

  520. recognize like yeah we've all received

  521. the word of truth we've heard the word

  522. of truth it's another thing to receive

  523. that humbly can I get a witness uh you

  524. ever encountered someone and it's like

  525. hey I I I think you have encountered the

  526. word of truth but I feel like you

  527. received it arrogantly

  528. it's really

  529. pheriseical where it's like I I think

  530. you actually do have it buried within

  531. you because you are spewing stuff out of

  532. your mind i just don't know that it's

  533. written on your heart it reminds me of

  534. the most haunting parable that Jesus

  535. will tell when he talks about how there

  536. were two different individuals that went

  537. to pray a Pharisee and a tax collector

  538. and he says the Pharisee went up to pray

  539. and he said "Lord I thank you that I'm

  540. not like all these other

  541. losers greedy adulterers unrighteous."

  542. He said "Thank you i'm not like this tax

  543. collector you seen the things that he

  544. does things he doesn't do so I I I fast

  545. twice a week i give a tenth of

  546. everything that I get and then the tax

  547. collector that this guy was just making

  548. fun of and saying he doesn't love the

  549. Lord because of this this and this he

  550. goes up to pray and he says "Lord have

  551. mercy on me a sinner." And Jesus says

  552. "Which of them do you think went down to

  553. his home justified?" The latter there's

  554. different ways to receive the implanted

  555. word and it will produce things in

  556. different ways uh you'll actually see

  557. that 1 Peter chapter 1 vers 23 would say

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  558. this because you've been born again not

  559. of perishable seed but of imperishable

  560. through the living and enduring word

  561. notice that the word of God is like a

  562. seed pastor Brian said that a couple of

  563. weeks ago and you see that it very much

  564. will end up mimicking things that Jesus

  565. has already said in Luke 8:es 5-8 that

  566. you remember Jesus would give the

  567. parable of the soils and it'll say that

  568. a swer swed seed the word of God some

  569. fell along the path and it was trampled

  570. and the birds devoured it other seed

  571. fell on rock and it grew up but then it

  572. withered because of the lack of moisture

  573. other seed fell among the thorns and the

  574. thorns grew up with it choked it out

  575. other seed fell on good ground and

  576. produced fruit a h 100 times what was

  577. sown what is good soil an honest and a

  578. humble heart that receives the implanted

  579. word is a good

  580. soil you notice James goes on to say "So

  581. be doers of the word and not hearers

  582. only deceiving

  583. yourselves." In in Jesus magnum opus as

  584. he's preaching the sermon on the mount

  585. he beautifully demonstrates to these

  586. people that there's something different

  587. about him his wisdom is beyond belief he

  588. obviously is someone different than just

  589. any other prophet in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  590. all the way through Matthew 7 you see

  591. that he goes through the biatitudes and

  592. the sermon on the mount it's amazing but

  593. what I love the most is the way that he

  594. ends up ending it as a way of just

  595. saying "Okay that's great that you all

  596. just heard that but now what are we

  597. going to do about it?" And he'll end up

  598. saying those who hear my words and do

  599. something about them that individual is

  600. like someone who's a wise man they built

  601. their house on the rock and when you

  602. build your house on the rock when the

  603. storms of life come your home will still

  604. stand but those of you that hear the

  605. things that I'm saying you hear my words

  606. but you don't act on them you're like a

  607. foolish man that built his house on the

  608. sand that when the storms of life come

  609. then their home is going to crumble he

  610. says one of those lead to flourishing

  611. and the other one leads to failure jesus

  612. is saying here how are you building your

  613. life h how are you constructing your

  614. life we're all building our life and and

  615. Jesus is just the voice that James is

  616. the echo of here he says "Hey storms are

  617. going to show up they're going to happen

  618. doesn't matter if they're big small

  619. they're going to hurt on some level it's

  620. not if it's when and what are you

  621. building your life on are you building

  622. your life on your

  623. feelings are you building your life on

  624. your career are you bu how are you

  625. building your life it's all going to go

  626. away at some point and is the word of

  627. God a mere suggestion when you get to

  628. these types of things and it's like

  629. "Yeah I'll use that for this." Uh but

  630. then whenever you ultimately find

  631. something it's like "Ah this feels a

  632. little bit controversial." You're like

  633. "Just disregard it i don't know why it

  634. says that either." Or is it the

  635. foundation upon which you construct

  636. everything in your life jesus is saying

  637. "Hey it doesn't make sense to listen to

  638. what I have to say and to not do

  639. something about it." Because when you do

  640. what I've said you'll notice that not

  641. only will you flourish but others around

  642. you will as well and if you don't it

  643. ultimately ends in failure it doesn't

  644. make sense to say "Hey I know something

  645. but I'm not going to do anything about

  646. it." Imagine that I collapsed right now

  647. with a medical issue please no but

  648. imagine that I collapsed right now with

  649. a medical issue and somebody in here had

  650. the sense to say "Is there a doctor in

  651. here?" Which by the way is there a

  652. doctor in

  653. here all right well I really hope I

  654. don't drop dead then uh like

  655. And don't just random people be coming

  656. up doing CPR let me go all right

  657. so like it would be bizarre if I

  658. collapsed right here and someone's like

  659. I'm a doctor and they looked at me and

  660. they're

  661. like that's tough and just walked away

  662. but that's how you read the word of God

  663. as dumb as that

  664. sounds that's how dumb we live our

  665. life chief offender right

  666. here we all struggle with this and so

  667. James will take it further he doubles

  668. down he doesn't let up he says "If

  669. anyone's a hearer of the word and not a

  670. doer," he's like someone looking at his

  671. own face in a mirror he looks at himself

  672. goes away and immediately forgets what

  673. kind of person he was what's James

  674. saying he's saying "Don't look in a

  675. mirror like I look in a mirror when I

  676. look in a mirror I don't really care

  677. what's going on i'm ready to start the

  678. day." If Lindsay and I need to be

  679. somewhere on

  680. time some somebody said

  681. "Careful." A death

  682. sentence is if she finds her way back

  683. into the bathroom with 15 minutes to go

  684. because she'll find like a single strand

  685. no strand left behind is her tag and

  686. she's tucking it in singing a lullabi

  687. make sure it's good like it's happy like

  688. she runs a full diagnostic on her outfit

  689. she runs a full diagnostic on her hair

  690. and her look and if I step in front of a

  691. mirror I'm like "That's a mess but let's

  692. go." Uh and I just don't care and here's

  693. the thing i'm not knocking her i'm

  694. knocking me that's the way you're

  695. supposed to use a mirror

  696. like it's bizarre to look in a mirror

  697. and be like "That's off that's off

  698. that's hideous can't do nothing about

  699. that you got a face for radio right now

  700. like we got to figure this out." Like no

  701. no no you like if you see issues then

  702. you got to do something about it it's

  703. bizarre to be like "Man there's a whole

  704. lot of issues there let's just go out."

  705. That doesn't make sense and James is

  706. saying it doesn't make sense why would

  707. you do that he says "One who looks

  708. intently into the perfect law of freedom

  709. and perseveres in it and is not a

  710. forgetful hearer but a doer who works."

  711. This person will be blessed in what he

  712. does listen to me the word of God can

  713. bring you forth give you birth by the

  714. word of truth it's buried within you

  715. implanted and then we also see that it

  716. will

  717. bloom but notice James says something

  718. weird he says "The perfect law of

  719. freedom." Laws and freedom feel like

  720. opposites

  721. how how can you have laws and freedom

  722. i've said this before but it's like the

  723. greatest illustration

  724. ever swamps and rivers are the same

  725. thing

  726. technically the difference between a

  727. swamp which just looks like hideous

  728. chaos and a river that looks like it

  729. brings life is that rivers have banks

  730. that's the technical difference

  731. laws things that push the river forward

  732. bring life but where there's no law

  733. there's lawlessness that brings no life

  734. and so what the word is really trying to

  735. get us to understand is that the grace

  736. and the power of God laid out for us and

  737. revealed in his word is going to

  738. absolutely set up some things for us to

  739. see life flow forward rather than us be

  740. in a position to where we just feel like

  741. I'm going to live without any

  742. restriction and just sin as I

  743. please he's saying look into the perfect

  744. law of freedom and that's how we get to

  745. what it is that we began reading here

  746. today

  747. if anyone thinks he's religious without

  748. controlling his tongue his religion is

  749. useless and he deceives himself so James

  750. is saying real faith and

  751. religion will not only hear things but

  752. do things and he will list out the

  753. things that will be done but but what's

  754. interesting here is he'll list a couple

  755. of different items he'll talk about

  756. controlling the tongue caring for widows

  757. and orphans but what's interesting is

  758. not just what he says but how he says it

  759. if anyone thinks he is religious that if

  760. there is really important it's a first

  761. class conditional conjunction which is

  762. not why you're here today but what it

  763. means is that he's assuming that what

  764. he's saying is true he he's not saying

  765. "I don't really know if there's anybody

  766. that thinks they're religious but I'm

  767. just going to throw this out there

  768. anyway." He's like "No I know that there

  769. are many of you." This is calling for

  770. self-examination you've already failed

  771. the test if you've started thinking

  772. about other

  773. people you already failed bad start do

  774. not pass go like like you you you've got

  775. to this is calling for

  776. self-examination i love what one

  777. commentator had to say about this text

  778. it has transformed the way that I read

  779. what it is that's written here he says

  780. "James is not talking about a conscious

  781. hypocrite that's

  782. repentant he's talking about a

  783. self-deceived religionist who thinks

  784. they're always right

  785. he's not talking about a conscious

  786. hypocrite he's talking about a

  787. self-deceived religionist let's put it

  788. like this he's not talking about the

  789. person that you heard say a cuss word

  790. that's

  791. repentant he's talking about the person

  792. that says a cuss word or causes division

  793. or lies and always justifies why they do

  794. those things and why other people are

  795. off can I be honest with you i'm going

  796. to so thank you um

  797. so I have two

  798. sons pray for us uh Judah and Elijah

  799. judah is my oldest son and Judah loves

  800. golf more than life okay uh like I don't

  801. know how i hope he gets good at it good

  802. enough to let me be done retire early

  803. whatever it is that needs to happen like

  804. just do it that's fine he loves golf and

  805. there was an evening uh three weeks ago

  806. a month ago something uh where we had

  807. like the most picture perfect situation

  808. going on at our home we have a small

  809. backyard but it it's plenty for us and

  810. it's amazing like uh like the birds are

  811. chirping the sky is blue the grass is

  812. greener uh Lindsay is sitting on the

  813. back deck reading the Bible and books

  814. about parenting and one of our sons is

  815. just playing in the water and just he's

  816. just behaving and obedient and my son uh

  817. is playing golf with a a fake club a

  818. plastic club with plastic balls i am

  819. chipping with real golf balls and I

  820. decide that I am going to chip towards

  821. the

  822. home and

  823. um our bedroom windows back

  824. there and I am distracted by something

  825. at this point and I chip the ball and I

  826. don't really look at where it's going

  827. i'm looking at Judah and I just hear

  828. crash i think we have a picture of

  829. it

  830. um and when I tell you my my wife who

  831. was reading these

  832. books I'd rather be in open water with a

  833. great white shark than be on the

  834. receiving end of that look

  835. and what didn't help is that she looks

  836. at me and Judah's looking at me going

  837. "Oh." And I'm just

  838. like and I wish as your pastor that I

  839. could say to you and you know what I did

  840. in that moment i said "Gee Willickers

  841. good golly gosh Luke you silly goose you

  842. silly milly i can't believe you did

  843. that." Like and instead I said a bad

  844. word i was mad at me i was mad that it

  845. was 459 on a Friday and so nobody could

  846. come out and fix it i wondered how much

  847. it was going to cost i know that my wife

  848. was mad at me my son's making fun of me

  849. it is just a nightmare of a situation

  850. and so I say a bad word that I shouldn't

  851. have said and at that same moment it

  852. becomes his favorite word for the next

  853. three

  854. [Applause]

  855. days hey sir can you get here i can get

  856. there on Tuesday no no no marriage is in

  857. trouble i need you to get He can't make

  858. it happen me and my wife are like duct

  859. taping trash bags to the window and my

  860. kids just shouting bad words at me and

  861. I'm just like I

  862. just And I wish that didn't

  863. happen but I thought you know I can lie

  864. to you or I can tell you the truth

  865. pastors aren't supposed to say stuff

  866. like that

  867. what would have been wrong is if I said

  868. "No I was just if you knew the day that

  869. I had if you knew if you knew the things

  870. I was dealing if you knew what I was

  871. carrying I just I got Easter coming up i

  872. got like if I had tried to justify it

  873. but instead I had to own it and I had to

  874. repent to my wife i had to repent to my

  875. kid who I am still repenting to." Like

  876. you you have all these things right

  877. the

  878. problem is when you try to make sense of

  879. it rather than just owning it and saying

  880. "Lord would you continue that

  881. sanctifying work in me?" It's amazing if

  882. anyone thinks he's religious we all do

  883. on some level we tend to really take

  884. issue with the sins that we don't

  885. struggle with and we tend to be really

  886. critical of the ones that we don't

  887. struggle with we legitimize every single

  888. thing that we do in our life that's

  889. sinful but man you can call out somebody

  890. who struggles with something that you

  891. don't if anyone thinks he's religious if

  892. he

  893. supposes religious means external

  894. behaviors not internal devotion it looks

  895. like you do this it looks like you don't

  896. do that if they look like that we all do

  897. on some level and James is saying the

  898. issue is not that you can see someone

  899. else's struggle the issues that you

  900. can't see your

  901. own it reminds me of what Jesus says in

  902. Matthew 7:3 and 4 he says "Why do you

    Matthew 7:3

  903. look at the splinter in your brother's

  904. eye but don't notice the beam of wood in

  905. your own eye how can you say to your

  906. brother let me take the splinter out of

  907. your eye and look there's a beam of wood

  908. in your own eye?" Jesus is being funny

  909. you're supposed to laugh at this he's

  910. saying "Hey man you're really concerned

  911. about the speck in their eye but we are

  912. dodging the 2x4 that's coming out of

  913. yours while you're talking to us about

  914. it he's saying "How can you do that how

  915. can you not even see that the thing

  916. that's impaling your skull is fixing to

  917. impale us if you don't do something

  918. about it but you're concerned with the

  919. speck in my eye what's wrong with you?"

  920. And listen James is going to talk about

  921. controlling the tongue at length in

  922. James chapter 3 so I'm trying to not rob

    James 3 chapter mention

  923. him of what we're going to get to there

  924. but we see there are absolutely things

  925. that we should do but listen I would

  926. much rather be a conscious hypocrite

  927. than be someone that's a self-deceived

  928. religionist anytime somebody says "Man

  929. church is full of hypocrites." I'm like

  930. "You should join in you'd be perfect for

  931. it." It's the self-deceived religionist

  932. where I'm like "Exits are that

  933. way give me all the conscious hypocrites

  934. why did God stay with

  935. David he'd be so canled

  936. because he's a conscious

  937. hypocrite i did sin i did mess up i am

  938. sorry i am repentant it's the other guys

  939. that aren't

  940. repentant king Saul's rap sheets nothing

  941. like King

  942. David's and yet he's not the one that we

  943. rever because he's not

  944. repentant jesus says here "How in the

  945. world can you look at your brother and

  946. be concerned with the speck in his eye

  947. and you have got a 2x4 in your own eye

  948. how can you do that we tend to have an

  949. unbelievable tolerance for our own sin

  950. and an intolerance for other people's

  951. sin and Jesus is saying "Hey let me help

  952. you with something you should trade your

  953. magnifying glass for a

  954. mirror you get so enamored looking for

  955. all the issues in other people and man

  956. you can find them." And you're here's

  957. the crazy thing you're not even

  958. wrong but now you're missing how you're

  959. sick

  960. and so you can find all of the issues in

  961. conscious hypocrites and miss that

  962. you're becoming a self-deceived

  963. religionist sometimes we can get so good

  964. with a magnifying glass that we start to

  965. point out things in other people that

  966. also start building up within us but

  967. it's when you get before a mirror where

  968. you will hit your knees and say "Lord

  969. there's an issue there there's an issue

  970. there there's an issue there do a work

  971. in me that yes I would call your church

  972. to holiness and purity but wow it would

  973. be a lot more holy and a lot more pure

  974. if I started here versus

  975. here so he says in verse

  976. 27 pure and undefiled religion before

  977. God the Father is this to look after

  978. widows and orphans in their distress and

  979. to keep oneself unstained from the world

  980. he compares and contrasts religion and

  981. he says "One's worthless one's

  982. undefiled." He says "Not controlling the

  983. tongue can make your religion useless

  984. but to take care of widows and orphans

  985. can leave you unstained from the

  986. world." What's interesting is there's an

  987. outward focus in the work of caring for

  988. widows and orphans but there's also an

  989. inward focus that to do that is to be

  990. unstained here undefiled work unstained

  991. from the world and it's interesting

  992. Jesus will sum this

  993. up in Matthew where we see that an

  994. individual will come to him and sayte

  995. teacher which command in the law is the

  996. greatest and he says love the Lord your

  997. God with all your heart with all your

  998. soul with all your mind it's the

  999. greatest and most important command

1000. second is like it love your neighbor as

1001. yourself all the law and prophets depend

  1002. on these two

1003. commands caring for widows and orphans

1004. is good practice in both of these how

1005. there's no personal gain that comes from

1006. taking care of those individuals that

1007. the world sees as lowly there's no

1008. personal gain from that and so you know

1009. that it's pure you know it's undefiled

1010. you know that it makes you unstained

1011. from the world because there's a lot of

1012. people where they want to do work for

1013. Jesus and they want to say that their

1014. whole life is about Jesus but the truth

1015. of the matter is they kind of want their

1016. name to rise with Jesus'

1017. name and wouldn't be all that mad if it

1018. surpassed it in some way in their own

  1019. mind

  1020. but pure and undefiled

1021. religion is that you would take care of

1022. widows and orphans that there's an

1023. inward purification and an outward

1024. living jesus would say "Whatever you did

1025. for the least of these you did for me

1026. whatever you didn't do you didn't do for

1027. me." And we see that James will put on

1028. display particularly in his context at

1029. that time in history what would be seen

1030. as the lowest of the low widows and

1031. orphans will you care for the least of

1032. these and here's the thing as believers

1033. in Jesus that should be the easiest

1034. thing that we do because no matter

1035. what's in your bank account or what's

1036. going on in your life at one point you

1037. hadn't been brought forth by the word of

1038. truth and in your spiritual poverty you

1039. didn't have the word of truth buried

1040. within you there was nothing blooming in

1041. your life that you would look back on

1042. and be like that's going to last till

1043. kingdom come that we're a people that

1044. understand we were the least of these

  1045. before an almighty God

1046. and that we see when we could do nothing

1047. for him in his son he did everything for

1048. us that we see that Jesus Christ lived

1049. the perfect life that we could not and

1050. died the death that we deserved that he

1051. would rescue us so that we could be a

1052. people where many of you you flip

1053. through this book and you just feel like

  1054. you're constantly like I don't do that i

1055. don't do that i don't know how to do

1056. this this is ain't going well i just

  1057. don't want I don't really know i just

1058. like things are not going well when it

1059. comes to Hey here's here's the deal

  1060. because of him

1061. you find yourself in a place where it's

1062. like all of these beautiful things are

1063. happening in the context of your

1064. struggles brought forth by the word of

1065. truth the words buried in you and

1066. beautiful things will bloom but keep

1067. on keep stepping keep staying in step

1068. with the spirit like Galatians 5:2 says

    Galatians 5:2

1069. because you will see that so long as you

1070. go to your death as a conscious

1071. hypocrite you can know and the Lord did

1072. a beautiful work in me but Lord don't

1073. let me become someone that goes to my

1074. grave thinking man I am so glad that I

1075. helped purify the Lord's church on his

1076. behalf uh we want to be a people that go

1077. "When I could do nothing for you you did

1078. everything for me and I will continue to

1079. surrender my life to you with all of who

1080. I am and all of what I have." Lord would

  1081. we be

1082. that those people your people kingdom

1083. people that understand this word for

  1084. what it actually

  1085. says lord I don't know if there's anyone

1086. in here that feels like they are just

1087. going in circles today and they are

1088. chasing everything that the world's got

1089. to offer only to find out that all of it

1090. will come to a screeching halt at some

1091. point that feels like they're building

1092. their life on sand but they want to

  1093. build on

1094. rock and put their faith in you but I

1095. would just say if you're someone who's

1096. never taken that step and put your faith

1097. in Jesus Christ but you're like "Today I

1098. want to know that I am his forever and

1099. will live in eternity with him but

1100. you've not taken the plunge of actually

1101. being serious about this." Would you

1102. raise your hand if you're someone that

1103. says "I want to put my faith in Jesus

1104. today for the very first time." I see up

  1105. there

  1106. yep

1107. yep and if that's you would you just say

1108. "Lord I repent of my sin a sinner in

1109. need of a savior i believe that you

1110. lived the perfect life that I could not

1111. that you died the death that I deserved

1112. upon the cross jesus I believe that you

1113. willingly went to the cross and shed

1114. perfect innocent blood that will take

1115. away my sin past present and future i

1116. believe that you were buried in the tomb

1117. for three days but that you rose to life

1118. again and because you're alive I can be

1119. alive in your name and praise

1120. God Lord for the rest of us would we be

1121. a people that want to walk in a manner

  1122. of holiness and

  1123. love but are

1124. uncompromising that are quick to

1125. repent quick to recognize the grace that

  1126. covers our

1127. life quick to be a people that are doing

1128. all that we can to honor and glorify you

1129. loving our brothers and sisters that are

1130. around us in a way that shakes the world

1131. to its foundations of recognizing what

1132. it means to bow before a

1133. Lord we love you we praise you and we

1134. thank you we ask this in Jesus name amen
