  1. All right. All right. Well, welcome to

  2. Lifeford Church, everybody. How's

  3. everyone feeling? We doing all right.

  4. Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms

  5. that are in the room. Can we give it up

  6. for the mothers that are in this house

  7. right

  8. now? Would be remiss if I didn't say

  9. happy Mother's Day to my own wife

  10. Lindsay and my mom Tanya who are in the

  11. room right now. anything that you like

  12. that I do is a direct result of their

  13. care for me because otherwise I would be

  14. in prison. And so, uh, I think we all

  15. have a testimony that goes that way on

  16. some level. Uh, and let me just can I

  17. hold like a couple things in tension

  18. here just for a moment. Um, I think

  19. Mother's Day uh is is a day of

  20. celebration for lots of reasons, but I

  21. think it's also a difficult day for

  22. other reasons, you know. Uh, and one of

  23. the unique responsibilities and joys of

  24. my life is to be able to walk with

  25. people going through really different

  26. circumstances. There are a lot of women

  27. in here uh or that could be tuning in

  28. online or or go to other gatherings that

  29. that have a desire to be a mother and

  30. that's something that's not yet been

  31. realized and yet is something that they

  32. still pray for. Or there could also be

  33. individuals in here where you've

  34. experienced uh loss on some level of a

  35. child. And so this day is somewhat

  36. difficult for you. And so I I just want

  37. to acknowledge you. I want to let you

  38. know that the Lord sees you. I I think

  39. about the many names of God. And one of

  40. those names is Elroy, the God who sees.

  41. And I just want you to know the Lord

  42. sees you on this day. Uh and we are so

  43. grateful for you and are continuing to

  44. press in and pray with you for all of

  45. the things that you'd love to see God

  46. do. And so how many of us know like we

  47. we're coming around all of those

  48. different women in this church? Can I

  49. get an amen today? Like we we're so

  50. grateful. And I also want to acknowledge

  51. that at the same time we can celebrate

  52. all of uh the moms that that do have

  53. children and and have raised up

  54. incredible sons and daughters in the

  55. faith. And so I'll tell you, I mean, how

  56. many you have the mom I know when my mom

  57. wakes up to pray, hell sends

  58. reinforcements. You know what I'm

  59. saying? So like you you like some of

  60. y'all know what it's like to have those

  61. moms in your life. It's the it's the

  62. early mornings. It's the late nights.

  63. It's the unseen, unseleelebrated things

  64. that you do that though it might feel

  65. like that, it's on this day that we

  66. acknowledge we do see those things and

  67. you don't get enough credit. But we are

  68. so grateful for the way that you formed

  69. us as people, but maybe more importantly

  70. for our context here today, the way that

  71. you formed our faith. So, can we give it

  72. up for moms one more time here today

  73. this morning?

  74. Unfortunately, I don't know uh what your

  75. church background is, and I'm not

  76. shaming churches that do this, but I'm

  77. not the pastor that's like, "It's

  78. Mother's Day. We should talk about an

  79. obscure female figure in the script."

  80. Like, uh we're going to talk about

  81. theology this morning. Uh because I

  82. think that's what we should do. Like,

  83. hey, uh Father's Day, we're going to do

  84. the same thing, just for the record.

  85. Spoiler alert. Uh and so, we're going to

  86. be continuing in our collection of

  87. conversations that we've been in over

  88. the course of the past several weeks

  89. that we have been calling Walk the Walk.

  90. Walk the walk is a collection and a

  91. discussion that has us living and

  92. lingering in the book of James. And

  93. James wants to make sure that we

  94. practice what we preach. We've taken

  95. this title from a famed phrase that

  96. says, "Don't just talk the talk, but

  97. rather walk the walk." And so, we know

  98. that James understands what the

  99. Christian walk looks like, right? James

  100. understands we live in a broken and a

  101. fallen world that is sick with sin. Sin

  102. which separates us from a holy and a

  103. perfect God. In fact, Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6:23

  104. verse 23 would say, "For the wages of

  105. sin is death." And not just a physical

  106. death, but a spiritual death. eternal

  107. separation from a holy and a perfect God

  108. who cannot allow sin in the camp if he's

  109. going to be holy, perfect, or just. And

  110. so, we had no hope. We needed someone to

  111. radically rescue and intervene on our

  112. behalf. Otherwise, we had no way to God.

  113. And the good news of the gospel is that

  114. in a merciful demonstration of

  115. sacrificial love and grace, we see that

  116. in Jesus Christ there is salvation. Yes,

  117. that Ephesians 1:7 would say in him is

    Ephesians 1:7

  118. redemption and the forgiveness of sin.

  119. And so we understand that as a people we

  120. are not here to try to figure out how we

  121. can achieve salvation, but rather we

  122. understand that we receive salvation as

  123. a free gift in Jesus Christ. that we

  124. repent of our sins and put our faith in

  125. him. And that is the hope that we have

  126. in the gospel. The gospel is not that

  127. all of a sudden you have an opportunity

  128. to climb your way to God. The good news

  129. of the gospel is that God came down to

  130. us in his son Jesus Christ. And so we

  131. are not saved by our works. And yet the

  132. saved will demonstrate works. And that

  133. much is clear in the text that we have

  134. renewed and regenerated hearts but

  135. engaged heads and hands in all that God

  136. is doing. building his kingdom here on

  137. earth in Orlando or whatever city it is

  138. that you are visiting from as it is in

  139. heaven. And so we want to read today a

  140. fairly lengthy uh and really dense

  141. passage. James chapter 2 if you will uh

    James 2 chapter mention

  142. verses 14- 26. Get there in the

  143. scriptures if you have a copy of them

  144. with you uh if if you're still uh trying

  145. to figure out how committed you are to

  146. the Lord. They'll be on the screen. Uh

  147. and what I want to do is I'm messing.

  148. I'm messing. I'm messing. All right.

  149. If you have a Bible, hold it up. Uh like

  150. you

  151. know everybody else, there will be a

  152. moment of altar call and repentance at

  153. the end of this gathering. Y'all ready

  154. for the word? Says this, "What good is

  155. it, my brothers and sisters, if someone

  156. claims to have faith but does not have

  157. works? Can such faith save him?" If a

  158. brother or sister is without clothes and

  159. lacks daily food, and one of you says to

  160. them, "Go in peace. Stay warm and be

  161. wellfed." But you don't give them what

  162. the body needs, what good is it? In the

  163. same way, faith, if it doesn't have

  164. works, is dead by itself. But some will

  165. say, "You have faith and I have works.

  166. Show me your faith without your works,

  167. and I will show you faith by my works."

  168. You believe that God is one. Good. Even

  169. the demons believe and they shudder, you

  170. senseless person. Thank you, James. Are

  171. you willing to learn that faith without

  172. works is useless? Wasn't Abraham our

  173. father justified by works and offering

  174. Isaac his son on the altar? You see that

  175. faith was active together with his works

  176. and by works faith was made complete.

  177. And the scripture was fulfilled that

  178. says Abraham believed God and it was

  179. credited to him as righteousness and he

  180. was called God's friend. You see that a

  181. person is justified by works and not by

  182. faith alone. In the same way, wasn't

  183. Rahab the prostitute also justified by

  184. works in receiving the messengers and

  185. sending them out by a different route?

  186. For just as the body without the spirit

  187. is dead, so also faith without works is

  188. dead. Let's pray. Uh Lord, so grateful

  189. to uh to be able to

  190. operate not just as a person but as a

  191. believer out of your word that we are

  192. not aimlessly trying to figure out what

  193. it looks like we should be doing here

  194. but rather we are here guided by your

  195. word and your spirit that we might be a

  196. people that are walking in accordance

  197. with you. Not that we would be

  198. restricted from all of these great

  199. things that we feel like the world has

  200. to offer that we would have to spurn you

  201. in order to gather, but rather because

  202. we're a people that understand you

  203. created us. You created the world that

  204. we live in and the designer knows the

  205. best way in which we function within

  206. that design. And so Lord, I'm just

  207. asking you that right now in this moment

  208. that you would just specifically uh just

  209. just would you just move in the hearts

  210. and the minds of of those mothers that

  211. are in this room right now that have

  212. helped families operate in this way.

  213. Lord, would you just bless them and keep

  214. them? Would your face shine upon them?

  215. would you just give them an extra dose

  216. of peace or maybe even understanding of

  217. the work that they've done and the way

  218. that it has compounded into the way that

  219. we see people operating in your world

  220. today. Lord, I ask that as we move

  221. through this text, though it's dense,

  222. Lord, that you would make it crystal

  223. clear what it is that your word says and

  224. that we would be a people that dig

  225. deeper into these truths rather than

  226. feel intimidated by them. Lord, we love

  227. you. We praise you and we thank you and

  228. we ask these things in Jesus name. Amen.

  229. Well, on July 23rd,

  230. 1983, there was a serious

  231. miscalculation that led to Air Canada

  232. flight number 143 becoming known as the

  233. Gimly Glider. Uh, Captain Robert Pearson

  234. along with his first officer, Maurice

  235. Quintinl, were traveling with 61

  236. passengers and they had reached a

  237. cruising altitude of 41,000 ft. As they

  238. did, they noticed that the fuel pressure

  239. pump gauge was being a little bit odd.

  240. Like it it would kind of look like

  241. things were broken and messed up as they

  242. were observing the gauge, but then it

  243. would kind of course correct and it

  244. would look like things were fine. And so

  245. as they were observing this, they

  246. thought, well, maybe there's just

  247. something wrong with the gauge itself

  248. and so we'll just continue our flight

  249. and it'll just kind of course correct as

  250. we go. But they started to find out very

  251. quickly that that was a super wrong

  252. assumption. Uh because very shortly

  253. after they realized that there was

  254. something off with the gauge, the left

  255. engine died and then the right engine

  256. died. And in that moment, they realized,

  257. oh, it's not that the gauge was a little

  258. bit off, it's that we've got a major

  259. problem. And they would call for an

  260. emergency landing as a result of this.

  261. And so previously where that gauge

  262. wasn't sounding like things were too

  263. off, when the engines died, it looked

  264. like there was a circus going on in the

  265. plane because every light was blinking

  266. and flashing and was super problematic.

  267. And as they started to descend against

  268. their will, they started to aim for a

  269. decommissioned airport that was within

  270. their path and trajectory that was known

  271. as the Gimy Industrial Park Airport. And

  272. they were able to glide the aircraft

  273. from 41,000 ft safely to where every

  274. passenger was unharmed and unscathed,

  275. which is incredible if you think about

  276. it. I don't know how you would handle

  277. that situation, but I will speak freely

  278. for myself and say it would go

  279. unbelievably poor even if I were a

  280. passenger. Dual engine

  281. failure. And they handled that very

  282. calm, very cool, under pressure. They

  283. performed an aviation miracle that is

  284. still today considered to be the supreme

  285. example of how it is that you handle a

  286. very difficult situation and yet still

  287. can be able to glide your aircraft

  288. safely. And so still, while all of

  289. that's great and you're like, "Yay,

  290. nobody was unharmed." You would kind of

  291. be like, "Hey, what happened?" Like,

  292. "How did we even get to this point? If

  293. I'm a passenger on board, I'm trying to

  294. make some money the oldfashioned way,

  295. right? Like, I'm going to sue this

  296. airline because I'm afraid for my life.

  297. I could have died and it is by the grace

  298. of God that I lived. What did you do

  299. wrong that I had to hope and pray for

  300. things to work out from 41,000 ft? And

  301. I'll tell you, while the circumstance

  302. was really dire, the answer is pretty

  303. funny. Canada as a nation has

  304. traditionally used the imperial system

  305. of measurement. In America, we use the

  306. imperial system of measurement, right?

  307. We measure things in like feet, pounds,

  308. inches, that sort of thing. But what we

  309. see is that Canada at the date of this

  310. flight recently in their past had

  311. decided to move from the imperial system

  312. of measurement to the metric system of

  313. measurement. And so where we measure

  314. things in like feet and pounds, they now

  315. measure things in like kilograms and

  316. meters and other things that are clearly

  317. incorrect. And so we see we have some

  318. English people in here and I love and

  319. appreciate y'all a lot. But man, that is

  320. just a weird thing. I'm moving if if we

  321. do that, right? And so we see that that

  322. left them in a very difficult situation.

  323. To make matters worse, the very first

  324. aircraft in Canada that would move from

  325. measuring things in an imperial system

  326. to a metric system was a Boeing 767,

  327. which just so happened to be Air Canada

  328. Flight 143 being flown on a Boeing 767.

  329. And so the individual that was calling

  330. for measurement in fuel called for it in

  331. kilograms, but the individual that was

  332. measuring it out had done it his whole

  333. career in

  334. pounds, which left them with an

  335. unbelievable shortage of fuel. And thus

  336. the Gimly glider exists. And what's

  337. interesting about that is this that you

  338. have both clear communication and clear

  339. miscommunication. Right? Like if you

  340. were to say, "Hey, what was the number?"

  341. And I don't know what it was. Call it a

  342. 100. say they called for

  343. 100, we'd both agree on the number. But

  344. then if you said, "But what was the

  345. system? Was it kilograms or pounds?"

  346. That's where things start to go haywire.

  347. We agreed on the same number, but the

  348. system in the context in which that

  349. number exists changed everything. Do you

  350. see that? And I'm saying that to you

  351. this morning for this reason. What we

  352. just read in James is going to present

  353. something very similar. And to be honest

  354. with you, there's some major confusion

  355. that should have been caused by what

  356. James just said. Like if you spend any

  357. time in your life in the scriptures, you

  358. should look at what James just said, you

  359. should measure it up against the New

  360. Testament, and you should feel like

  361. you're in a crisis of faith if you don't

  362. already have answers. Because what James

  363. just said seems very, very, very, very

  364. odd to the point where even historically

  365. theologians and individuals have really

  366. wrestled with what is James saying here?

  367. How can he say this? He said, "Faith

  368. without works is

  369. dead." That's a theological

  370. contradiction. There's a reason that

  371. I've gotten up here every single week

  372. that we've been in James and I've

  373. rehearsed the same monologue over and

  374. over that some of you are like, "Oh my

  375. gosh, I know what he's going to say at

  376. this point. I'm really sick of this guy

  377. talking about this." And I keep saying

  378. the same thing that we do not achieve

  379. salvation, we receive it. that we do not

  380. earn salvation, but it is a free gift

  381. that is available to us in Jesus Christ.

  382. That we've repented of our sins and put

  383. our faith in him. And as a result of

  384. that, we know we don't work our way to

  385. God, but God came down to us that he's

  386. the one who gets the glory. That we

  387. can't boast in and of ourselves at all.

  388. And I keep saying that because what we

  389. just read right now would seem like,

  390. hey, man, that's not true because James

  391. just said faith without works is dead.

  392. And that's incredibly problematic to the

  393. point where I think we actually need to

  394. even go further and address just how off

  395. things seem here. I want to show you

  396. what James says and what Paul says. I

  397. I'm going to read this. Are y'all with

  398. me right now? I want to read this and

  399. and I want you to listen to what's being

  400. said. James says, "You see that a person

  401. is justified how? By works and not by

  402. faith alone."

  403. Paul would say in Romans chapter 3, "For

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  404. we conclude that a person is justified

  405. by faith apart from the works of the

  406. law." Are we seeing the problem

  407. here? Like that's a problem. So what are

  408. the heretics and the critics, right? And

  409. every just like, "Hey, like like look at

  410. that." Like that's what Christians do.

  411. They just sweep everything under the

  412. rug. Like like you have a major issue

  413. right there. You want to go ahead and

  414. address that? You gonna do something

  415. about that? No. You're just going to cry

  416. about it and keep going to church and

  417. act like that's not that's a problem.

  418. Like, did I just end Christianity in a

  419. slideshow? I might have. Is it over?

  420. Should we just never gather again? And

  421. it's been like, "Hey, really great

  422. seeing y'all here. See you never. Maybe

  423. run into you at Epcot." Like I like I

  424. don't But like has it been fun? Like is

  425. that what we

  426. do? No.

  427. James and Paul are saying the same word.

  428. They are not disagreeing. They're saying

  429. the same word, but they're not using the

  430. same system of measurement, if that

  431. makes sense. The calculation is

  432. different. And we're going to go into

  433. why. But what I'd like to do before that

  434. is just acknowledge that it's funny to

  435. me that often times as generations

  436. continue on, we continually get more and

  437. more

  438. arrogant about the way that things are

  439. now and the knowledge that we have. as

  440. if generations before us just had no

  441. idea what they were doing. And I don't

  442. just mean that for like the next

  443. generation. That's not like a shot at

  444. Gen Z or Gen Alpha or is the next one

  445. Gen Beta. That's a that's not a fun

  446. name. Like or whatever you are like like

  447. I'm not saying that like the oldest

  448. generation in the room. You thought you

  449. were more brilliant than your

  450. grandfather's

  451. generation. And we can go throughout

  452. history feeling like well look at what

  453. we know now. And is there to some degree

  454. like there's advancements that would be

  455. weird to other generations? Sure. Like

  456. if you if you dug up like someone that

  457. was born in the 1600s and you were like,

  458. "Hey, I'd like to introduce you to AI."

  459. They wouldn't know what you're talking

  460. about, right? There's been advancement

  461. in that way. But so far as wisdom is

  462. concerned, there are things that we

  463. could learn from generations past that

  464. would be unbelievably applicable and

  465. useful in a generation today. Uh and CS

  466. Lewis had a term for this. He called it

  467. chronological snobbery.

  468. He said this chronological snobbery is

  469. the uncritical acceptance of the

  470. intellectual climate today common in our

  471. age assuming that whatever has gone out

  472. of date is on that account

  473. discredited. Why am I saying this?

  474. Because I think there's a lot of people

  475. that have like I I I I honestly at some

  476. point can we put like restrictions on

  477. who can have any like voice online? It's

  478. just not helpful. And and anybody that

  479. just wants to say whatever they want to

  480. say can act like it's just new

  481. revelation and they'll make a video that

  482. has a slide like I just put and was

  483. like, "Look, you you people don't even

  484. know what you're talking about." Do you

  485. think in 2,000 years of church history,

  486. nobody's looked at

  487. this? They have. James and Paul knew

  488. what each other were teaching and what

  489. they were saying. And you go, "Well, how

  490. do you know that? You have a time

  491. machine?" "No, but I do have Acts

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  492. chapter 15." And in Acts chapter 15, the

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  493. Jerusalem Council happens. And at the

  494. Jerusalem Council, we see that all of

  495. these faith leaders are gathered because

  496. Jesus Christ has been crucified, raised

  497. from the dead, eaten all these meals

  498. with these people. He's been spending

  499. time with his disciples. He ascends into

  500. heaven. And they're like,

  501. "Okay, okay." Like, how do we make sense

  502. of what it is that we know to be true?

  503. And the main subject matter at the

  504. Jerusalem Council was

  505. salvation and how works and faith are at

  506. play in that. And so what we see is that

  507. James and Paul knew what each other were

  508. teaching, knew what each other were

  509. saying. But what we see here and the

  510. crux of what we're trying to get at is

  511. how do you make sense of their use of

  512. the word justified? One says you're

  513. justified by faith. One says that you're

  514. not justified by faith alone, but that

  515. works are incorporated in there as well.

  516. How do we make sense of that? Well, the

  517. first thing we need to do is understand

  518. this that the same word in different

  519. contexts means different stuff, right?

  520. the same word. And that's true in

  521. English, right? Like if someone came up

  522. to me and we were having a conversation

  523. and all of a sudden I said,

  524. "Wow, that is an insane rock." I could

  525. be talking about

  526. this or I could be talking about a

  527. ring. Someone said, "Wow, my husband's

  528. got work to do." Like, I mean,

  529. That was the wrong picture. Um, that's

  530. on

  531. me. If I were to

  532. say talking to someone in the lobby and

  533. they're just like, "Man, I'm like really

  534. looking for like the perfect match.

  535. Like, I just haven't been able to find

  536. one." They could be talking about a

  537. dating relationship that they're looking

  538. for. Or they could be looking for

  539. something flammable to light their last

  540. relationship on

  541. fire.

  542. Right? in both of those contexts either

  543. one of those things work and it wouldn't

  544. be like what are you talking about they

  545. both work and so you have to understand

  546. the context in which things are being

  547. said that what we understand happening

  548. here is that James and Paul they're

  549. they're not contradicting one another

  550. that they're actually complenting one

  551. another what's interesting is that

  552. justified the the word that is being

  553. examined here justified in the original

  554. language can and does mean two different

  555. things justified can mean causing

  556. someone to be in right standing with

  557. another, which is what we see Paul is

  558. talking about. He's saying, "Hey, you've

  559. received the imputed righteousness of

  560. Jesus Christ. You repented of your sins.

  561. You put your faith in him, and you were

  562. clothed in righteousness that Jesus got

  563. the cross, and you got a crown. And so

  564. now you have the righteousness of God

  565. that covers your life. It has caused you

  566. to be in good standing with God the

  567. Father. That you have been put in a

  568. different place as a result of having

  569. faith in the finished work of Jesus

  570. Christ. But then what we see is that

  571. there's another way that justified can

  572. be used. You can be justified and it can

  573. literally be defined as demonstrating or

  574. showing works that declare your

  575. righteousness. that that would say, hey,

  576. yes, there are there is a way to

  577. actually know like, hey, I'm I'm

  578. justified in the sense that I'm in a

  579. different place with someone, but then I

  580. can also be justified because there are

  581. things that I do as a result of being in

  582. a different place that say, hey, look at

  583. what's different about my life. And

  584. that's what James is saying. Does that

  585. make sense? Do we see how these are

  586. working together? Paul, for clarity

  587. sake, we're going to spend a lot of time

  588. on clarity. Paul is saying, what we look

  589. at this is they work together. Paul is

  590. saying, "Hey, you have been saved by

  591. grace alone through faith alone in Jesus

  592. Christ alone." And that is incredible

  593. news this morning that we are a people

  594. that can know you have been justified.

  595. You find yourself in a different

  596. positional place as a result of faith in

  597. Jesus and repentance of your sins. So

  598. now we've moved to a different place and

  599. James is saying, "Yes, there's been a

  600. positional move. You've been justified,

  601. but also you've been justified that

  602. because you're in a different place

  603. positionally, there is a practical and a

  604. functional manner in which you will live

  605. and the things that you see grow in your

  606. life because you're in different soil.

  607. How do you know if a tree is dead or

  608. alive? Look at the branches. Is there

  609. fruit? If there is, it's alive. If not,

  610. it's either not in season or it's dead.

  611. And what we see is that Paul and James

  612. are saying, "We're both talking about

  613. trees." Paul's saying, "I'm talking

  614. about the roots." James is talking about

  615. the fruits. And whenever you find

  616. yourself in a place where you have moved

  617. into the saving soil of Jesus Christ,

  618. the root of faith will end up being

  619. revealed by the fruit of works. That

  620. there are different things on this tree

  621. because you are in different soil. And

  622. you can't brag about what your trees

  623. grow. And you got to brag about where

  624. your trees planted. And it is in what

  625. Jesus Christ has done on our behalf.

  626. That's the difference, right? And you

  627. see that James isn't going to let up

  628. here. He's going to keep going and he's

  629. going to be pretty brutal. And we see

  630. that he says in verse 18, "But someone

  631. will say, you have faith and I have

  632. works. Show me your faith without works

  633. and I'll show you faith by my works." I

  634. always think of James being like really

  635. sassy like when he's saying this. So

  636. like everybody watch my tone here. Uh

  637. but he's making a logical appeal. Like

  638. he's it sounds like he's being

  639. sarcastic. He says, "I can't see your

  640. faith." Like you don't walk in and be

  641. like,

  642. "Oh, love that faith." You'd be like,

  643. "What?" Like I mean that that you don't

  644. see that, but you can see works. You can

  645. see what someone is doing. And so if you

  646. were to go and look at a tree, you can't

  647. necessarily see the roots of the tree,

  648. but you can see the fruits on it. It's

  649. like one theologian and commentator

  650. said, "Faith alone

  651. saves, but faith that saves is never

  652. alone." Faith alone saves, but faith

  653. that saves is never alone. Are y'all

  654. with me here? So, let's let's be crystal

  655. clear because if we're not crystal clear

  656. here, well, then that's where things

  657. like uh heresy enter the conversation.

  658. And so, to be a million% clear on what's

  659. happening here, Paul and James are not

  660. fighting handto hand. They are standing

  661. back to back and fighting the same

  662. fight. That we see that faith alone

  663. saves but faith that saves is never

  664. alone. You have been justified and

  665. justified. Where previously in your life

  666. before you repented of your sins and put

  667. your faith in Jesus, you found yourself

  668. in a place where you were living in

  669. opposition to God. But after you

  670. repented of your sin and put your faith

  671. in Jesus, you went from being in

  672. opposition to God to experiencing

  673. adoption into God's family. And when you

  674. joined the family of God, you ended up

  675. taking on the values of the house. Does

  676. anybody know you couldn't get away with

  677. nothing in that house growing up without

  678. there being a swift paddle?

  679. I I know there are some moms that are

  680. like like I'm just I'm just I'm just

  681. telling y'all there used to be a

  682. generation of men that went to fight

  683. wars and and and like that ain't the

  684. thing anymore. Like we we got a whole

  685. different set of circumstances going on

  686. now. You take on different values in the

  687. house. you do and as a result you find

  688. yourself in a place where now you're

  689. living in a way to where people go I see

  690. that there are unseen roots here because

  691. I see fruits here there are things that

  692. you are doing that are different right

  693. and so the good news about that for you

  694. and I in this place is that we can know

  695. this we are a people that did not

  696. contribute anything to our

  697. salvation nothing other than the sin

  698. that we need saving from we didn't

  699. contribute anything to it so that we

  700. can't boast in ourselves. And the good

  701. news about all this, for some of you

  702. that are like, "Well, I feel like I'm

  703. getting beat up." You got rescued and

  704. you got rescued out of being beat up.

  705. And so, the good news is you're not

  706. trying to live for your father's

  707. approval. You're living from it. You're

  708. not trying to live for your father's

  709. love. You're living from it. You're not

  710. trying to earn a room in the house or a

  711. seat at the table. You already have one

  712. because your father brought you in and

  713. he's given you a room. And some of you

  714. go, "Well, that just seems like it's too

  715. good to be true. It's too good to be

  716. true by any circumstances that you find

  717. in this world." But if God is

  718. involved, then he could do it. And he

  719. has in his son. He has in his son. And

  720. so, we're a people that understand that.

  721. And that's why James is going to make it

  722. really crystal clear. He's not going to

  723. give us any wiggle room to try to figure

  724. out, well, how am I the one that makes

  725. this happen? And no, no, no, no. He he

  726. says there are two things that are true.

  727. Number one is that we are a people that

  728. have to understand that we can't boast

  729. in and of ourselves. But the other thing

  730. is because we find ourselves in the

  731. saving soil of Jesus, there are some

  732. beautiful things that we do that are

  733. going to be distinct from the world. And

  734. you see it here in James 2:es 14-17. He

  735. says, "What good is it, my brothers and

  736. sisters, if someone claims to have faith

  737. but does not have works? Can such faith

  738. save him? If a brother or sister is

  739. without clothes and lacks daily food,

  740. and one of you says to them, "Go in

  741. peace. Stay warm and be wellfed, but

  742. don't give them what the body needs,

  743. what good is that?" In the same way,

  744. faith, if it doesn't have works, is dead

  745. by itself. How many of us know that

  746. faith is not just seeing that person has

  747. needs? It's to actually do the work of

  748. meeting that need, right? Uh I have a

  749. group of pastors that I'll get with in

  750. November every year. uh and I'll go to

  751. this retreat in Colorado in the

  752. mountains and you couldn't get in touch

  753. with me if you had to like the family

  754. just prays that I come back. A and so as

  755. you go out to this place, there's a

  756. group of us that have been meeting for

  757. 10 years that just when we were very

  758. young, we were just like, "This is what

  759. we feel like God's called us to do." And

  760. we had some older saints that came

  761. around us and said, "Hey, let us speak

  762. wisdom into your life that you would

  763. live well and finish well in ministry."

  764. Uh and so I do that every November. And

  765. so, as you can imagine, there's this

  766. group of guys that you're like sharing

  767. all the burdens on your heart with and

  768. all the wins and victories and things

  769. that you quite frankly feel like you

  770. can't say anywhere else, you are sharing

  771. it there. And so, there's deep

  772. camaraderie that is built. Well, after

  773. one November, this is probably seven

  774. years ago now, there was an individual

  775. uh who probably in February of that

  776. following year, he ended up reaching out

  777. to a group of us via text and he just

  778. said, "Hey, I just need y'all's prayers

  779. right now. I am on my way to a crash

  780. site. My wife was just in a head-on

  781. collision with this guy. I just got a

  782. picture of the car. It's clearly

  783. totaled. I don't know how the other guy

  784. is. My wife is somehow miraculously

  785. fine. And yet, at the same time, she

  786. just delivered a child like four weeks

  787. ago. And so, we don't really know what

  788. is going on from here. I just need your

  789. prayers. And so, one of the guys in that

  790. group text ended up putting together a

  791. Zoom call with all of us that were in

  792. that text outside of this guy's

  793. knowledge. And we ended up getting on

  794. there and we prayed heaven down over

  795. this family. But then I'll never forget

  796. the guy at the end of this call that

  797. organized everything. He said, "Guys,

  798. I'm so glad that we prayed

  799. here." He said, "But you know what they

  800. need? Maybe as much as they need prayer

  801. right now?

  802. Money. Any money." And so we all are

  803. scraping together whatever we can find

  804. under our couch cushions. You know, it's

  805. like, "I got 37 cents. What do you have

  806. a buck 15? How did you get that?" like,

  807. you know, I mean that we're calling our

  808. networks like just just anybody that

  809. like loves us and it's like, hey, would

  810. you consider contributing to this? And a

  811. couple of people like really went crazy

  812. on their gift. And what we see is we

  813. were able to not only help them purchase

  814. a new car with cash, but that also they

  815. were able to meet a couple of different

  816. needs and bills over the course of their

  817. life to where it was like, hey, we have

  818. to deal with some emotional things that

  819. happened as a result of this, but we

  820. don't have a single financial burden as

  821. a result of this. And

  822. so I I say that because what I'm about

  823. to say uh might sound controversial, but

  824. to be a million percent with you, I

  825. don't care. Um like faith is offering

  826. more than your thoughts and prayers.

  827. There's a tragedy. Thoughts and prayers.

  828. Are you really thinking and praying?

  829. I'm not. Just be honest with

  830. you. Like like from the moment that I

  831. see it, like I I got a million things

  832. going on in my life. But when you engage

  833. the work, of course we're offering

  834. prayer. Nobody's making light of prayer.

  835. But like that's the bottom line. It's

  836. like saying, "Hey, I'm going to breathe

  837. today." Like if you're a believer, of

  838. course you're praying. And when you see

  839. that there's a need, of course we pray.

  840. That's what we do. But the beautiful

  841. thing about the church is we don't just

  842. pray. We're an answer to prayer. A lot

  843. of times people will be like, "Man, I

  844. just don't understand like why why

  845. aren't Christian like I mean, why isn't

  846. God just doing something about that?"

  847. Because he's sending you. because he's

  848. sending you and you're too busy griping

  849. about it to not actually do something

  850. about

  851. it. You wonder why someone's not meeting

  852. that need. Where are you at? You you

  853. want God to just like throw pixie dust

  854. on top of this thing and it's good. The

  855. beautiful work of what God has us do is

  856. he has us engage it. We are the body of

  857. Christ. We're the hands and feet of

  858. Jesus. And so we actually engage the

  859. work of what's going on. And because of

  860. that, we don't shy away from pain. We

  861. step into it. We're not passive and

  862. offering up empty phrases that we're not

  863. even really willing to keep. Of course,

  864. we're going to pray, but we want to do

  865. more than that. What is the need? And

  866. that's why I love all of the different

  867. things that Pastor Brandon mentioned a

  868. couple weeks ago that we are involved in

  869. from a local, national, and even global

  870. level of the way we're trying to meet

  871. needs as best as we can. And here's the

  872. thing, if you think I'm being brutal on

  873. it, well, you just wait till you read

  874. verse 19 and see how brutal James is on

  875. it. You're like, I don't like this.

  876. Well, James doesn't like us because of

  877. the way that we're not living. James

  878. says this. He says, "You believe God is

  879. one. Good. The demons believe that." And

  880. they

  881. shudder. I mean, that should have

  882. us. James says, "Oh, you intellectually

  883. understand that God exists. Good for

  884. you. Good for you. You You have answers

  885. when someone asks you like a moderately

  886. difficult theological question. Good for

  887. you. Is that is that what your faith is

  888. made up

  889. of? He he says the demons do that and

  890. they do it better than you. Like the

  891. demons know who God is. Have never

  892. doubted that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  893. They've known that and they will say it.

  894. They understand it. Like the demons

  895. believe good for you. But he says you've

  896. got demonic faith. Your demonic faith is

  897. that you believe in God's existence and

  898. you neglect the Lord in practice.

  899. That's what James says. He He says,

  900. "Wait a minute. You know God

  901. exists and you live like he doesn't.

  902. That's demonic faith. Demons do that."

  903. The difference between us and a demon is

  904. not that we are someone that's going to

  905. believe a whole lot differently. It's

  906. that we're going to live differently.

  907. And so you see that that's even true. In

  908. Mark 1:23 and 24, it says, "A man with

    Mark 1:23

  909. an unclean spirit was in the synagogue

  910. and he cried out, "What have you to do

  911. with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you

  912. come to destroy us? I know who you are,

  913. the Holy One of

  914. God." Even the demons

  915. believe. There's a lot of Christians

  916. with a

  917. Facebook, but there's not a lot of

  918. Christians that are out there actually

  919. doing the work that they're griping

  920. about on Facebook.

  921. You got to be about it. And as I say

  922. that, some of us are like, "Okay, well,

  923. that's a really difficult word." Trust

  924. me, I know. I mean, I'm not looking at

  925. my life and going like, "I'm killing it.

  926. I'm killing it. I'm killing it. I'm just

  927. like, you know, I mean, this is

  928. hard." But this is a deep and a slow

  929. work that happens within a person. I

  930. don't know many people where it's like

  931. you take that first step with Jesus and

  932. it's just like all of a sudden you are

  933. just killing it. Like you don't plant a

  934. tree and all of a sudden there's roots

  935. and fruits the next day.

  936. takes time. Any y'all ever seen Fix

  937. Herup? Y'all know what I mean? Like Chip

  938. and Joan are like a national treasure at

  939. this point. Like, y'all know y'all know

  940. what I'm talking about. And I love this

  941. show because it blows my mind. Like

  942. truly blows my mind. And here's the

  943. thing. This is going to shock everybody

  944. in the room. If something's broke in the

  945. house, I'm not your guy. I'm just like,

  946. I'm just so not your guy. I mean, it's

  947. so funny. I mean, like, we can have a

  948. light bulb go out and I'm just like, I

  949. got it. And Lindsay's like, "Hey, hey,

  950. hey, hey. Uh you you want maybe call

  951. Scott Art. Call call somebody like um

  952. because because it's it's not Babe, it's

  953. not that I don't think you could do it.

  954. It's just actually it is. I don't think

  955. that you can do it. And so

  956. um and so we're working on our marriage

  957. and

  958. um but Fix Her Up is crazy. You ever

  959. seen like the beginning of it is uh Demo

  960. Day where Chip will do demo day. Y'all

  961. tracking with me here? And Chip goes in

  962. with like a bunch of angry high

  963. schoolers and they're just like beating

  964. stuff up in the house just getting their

  965. testosterone out there and they're just

  966. like, "Yeah, this like just ripping

  967. apart islands and any loadbearing wall

  968. like they're avoiding kind of." But then

  969. everything else they're like wrecking

  970. and and at the end of demo day you're

  971. looking you're just like this

  972. is this is worse than it was

  973. before. You took like a dilapidated home

  974. and you've wrecked it. Now it's not just

  975. an ugly home, it's a busted up ugly

  976. home. And then slowly you're like, I

  977. can't even identify like the kitchen

  978. from the living room from the but you

  979. know, little backsplash here, little

  980. shiplap there, you know, renovate,

  981. decorate. Joanna comes in with this

  982. vision that you're just like, how do you

  983. like the what? How do I is that? I

  984. didn't even know that was

  985. possible. And slowly you start to

  986. realize like the living room comes alive

  987. and the kitchen comes alive and it

  988. starts making its way

  989. outside and you see that all of a sudden

  990. it's like there's a new coat of paint

  991. outside and even like the front yard

  992. looks amazing and people from the

  993. neighborhood start to come over because

  994. they're like, "Hey, there's clearly new

  995. residents in this

  996. place." And that's the work that God

  997. does in us. You might feel like you're

  998. in demo

  999. day. Am I saying like run home and like

1000. empty your bank account for the nations

1001. and like calling that good stewardship?

1002. Yeah. No, I'm kidding. Of course not.

1003. Like just making sure you're with me.

  1004. Like

  1005. no, be a good steward. But there's a

1006. there's a deep work that happens here,

1007. right? And you might feel like

1008. everything feels like a mess. I'm trying

1009. and and it just feels like I can't get

1010. it right. And I'm not here to say

1011. anything to you other than this today.

  1012. Keep on.

1013. Keep on. Let those roots go deep. It's

1014. okay if you feel like you're in demo

1015. day. And maybe you're in here and you're

1016. like, I don't feel like I'm in demo day,

1017. but I've been following the Lord for 40

1018. years and I feel like the rooms are are

  1019. shaping up, but I don't I don't know

1020. what to do next. Is gather some of those

1021. other individuals around you that don't

1022. and be like, "This is the way. This is

1023. how we move in our community." Wouldn't

1024. it be great if people passed by our our

  1025. church, our house, and

1026. said, "There's something different about

1027. the residents in that place. They just

1028. keep meeting needs. They keep doing

  1029. different

  1030. things." You see that James 2:es 21- 26

1031. is very practical. He says, "Wasn't

1032. Abraham our father justified by works in

1033. offering Isaac his son on the

1034. altar?" which like on a mother's day

1035. like I just have to say this like what

1036. was that conversation like when he came

1037. back with that boy like what did that

1038. look like? How was your walk with your

1039. dad? Well, it was weird you know

1040. like do we hear about Abraham after

1041. that? I don't know. She might have

  1042. killed him.

1043. You see that faith was active together

1044. with his works and by works faith was

1045. made complete and the scripture was

1046. fulfilled that says Abraham believed God

1047. and it was credited to him as

1048. righteousness and he was called God's

1049. friend. Wasn't Rahab the prostitute also

1050. justified by works in receiving the

1051. messengers and sending them out by a

1052. different route? Just as the body

1053. without the spirit is dead, so also

  1054. faith without works is

  1055. dead.

1056. Obedience is not required for

1057. salvation. Repentance and faith are.

1058. Have you repented of your sins and put

1059. your faith in Jesus? But when you're

1060. planted in the saving soil of Jesus

1061. Christ, there will be fruit if you are

  1062. really planted

1063. there. And we see that there is

1064. obedience that is woven into all of

1065. these different heroes that you'll see

1066. in things like Hebrews 11 in the Hall of

1067. Faith. So, if you're in here and you're

  1068. like, "Well, I don't know now. I'm

1069. starting to analyze like like the fruits

1070. in my life and what's not there. And

1071. this is why I don't like coming to

  1072. church and I'm really scared. I don't

  1073. know if I'm saved. I don't know what's

1074. going on. Do do you want to know how

  1075. you're

1076. saved? Where you don't have to be like

  1077. on a scale of 1 to 10, like a five or a

1078. seven, but you can be a 10. It is this

1079. simple. Have you repented of your sins

1080. and put your faith in the finished work

1081. of Jesus Christ on the cross and believe

1082. that he rose again and that he's the son

1083. of God and he's interceding for you

1084. right now and he's coming back

1085. again? You're in the family. You're in

1086. the family. A and here's the You can

1087. clap for Jesus Christ saving us on the

  1088. cross. Yeah. like

1089. um and and sometimes you might feel like

  1090. I just don't know that I'm I'm I'm don't

1091. let anyone shame you into what you're if

  1092. you're doing enough. It's are you

1093. letting that root take and are you

1094. seeing things slowly start to bloom in

  1095. your

  1096. life? Because God's doing a beautiful

  1097. thing in a

1098. people that are just saying,

1099. "Hey, no matter what's going

1100. on, I'm staying planted right here where

1101. he has me. I'm going to keep on." And I

1102. know that that root is going to produce

1103. fruit as I continue to follow him.

1104. And so Lord, would that land on us

1105. today? Would we be a

1106. people that are doing that that this

1107. isn't this is not this is not mere

  1108. intellectual

1109. exercise and we're just talking about

1110. original languages and context and all

1111. these things that are good and necessary

  1112. and and

1113. needed. But Lord, would we be a people

1114. that walk this out in the smallest of

  1115. ways? Bring a meal to a neighbor that's

1116. struggling. Seek out individuals that

1117. are even just walking the lobby, taking

  1118. a moment to

1119. pray, to help with a flat tire, to help

1120. in whatever ways seem so minuscule to us

  1121. sometimes, but are huge.

1122. Lord, if there's anyone in here that

1123. just feels like, you know what, I don't

1124. know if I don't know where I stand with

1125. God. We're talking about positional

1126. moves and practical functions and I

  1127. don't know where I stand.

1128. And if there's anyone in here that's

1129. never put their faith in Jesus or to be

1130. honest with you is just like, I I don't

1131. know that I've really considered all of

1132. this, but I want to put my faith in him.

1133. Would you raise your hand if that's you?

1134. If you'd like to spend eternity with

1135. Jesus and walk with him all the days of

1136. your life, I want to ask that you would

1137. pray with me and say, "Father, I'm a

1138. sinner in need of a

1139. savior. I I believe that you live the

1140. perfect life that I could

1141. not. That Jesus died the death that I

1142. deserved upon the cross. That he

1143. willingly went to and shed his perfect

1144. innocent blood that took away my sins,

1145. past, present, and future. I believe he

1146. was buried in the tomb for three days

1147. and that he rose to life again.

1148. because of his life, I can have life in

  1149. his

1150. name. Lord, for the rest of us that are

1151. in this room, would we be a people that

  1152. are just

1153. committed to seeing through the eyes of

1154. faith what it is that is going on right

  1155. in front of

  1156. us that that we

1157. would see your kingdom come on earth as

  1158. it is in

1159. heaven. Lord, we love you, praise you,

1160. and we thank you. We ask this in Jesus

  1161. name. Amen.
