  1. All right. Well, welcome to Key Church,

  2. everybody. How's everyone feeling? We

  3. doing all right?

  4. >> It is great to see you and to be here

  5. with you all this morning. I am so

  6. grateful that we are gathered together

  7. in this house. And I'm grateful because

  8. today we are continuing in our

  9. collection of conversations that we have

  10. been calling divine desire. Divine

  11. Desire is a collection. It's a

  12. discussion where we have been living in

  13. and we have been learning from the Song

  14. of Songs. and we've been addressing some

  15. relatively controversial things like

  16. dating, marriage, sex, and romance. And

  17. we've recognized that while we're facing

  18. substantial relational struggle, the

  19. beautiful news is that we have a

  20. scriptural solution that we're living in

  21. a culture right now, regardless of your

  22. age or your relational stage. We see

  23. that people are longing for committed

  24. love and at the same time losing their

  25. confidence in their ability to find it,

  26. have it, and keep it. And so just by way

  27. of recapping where it is that we are and

  28. how it is that we got there, we only

  29. have two more weeks left in the Song of

  30. Songs. I know especially after last

  31. week, some of you are like, "Let's just

  32. talk about it forever, but we got to

  33. move on." Uh, and so let me just say uh

  34. that where we are is that uh and again,

  35. if you're a YouTube or podcast person, I

  36. know that people have serious opinions

  37. about that apparently about what is

  38. better, but please go back, listen to

  39. these, watch these that everything would

  40. make sense. But we talked about how to

  41. be a man of God and how to be a woman of

  42. God. We talked about how not to date as

  43. well as how to date. We talked about

  44. singleness. We joined this couple on

  45. their wedding day in celebration of the

  46. commitment that they've made to one

  47. another. And then last week we went

  48. ahead and skipped the reception and went

  49. straight to the wedding night and talked

  50. about sex. And so now today we are

  51. talking about marital conflict.

  52. Oh yeah, who's pumped? And uh let me

  53. just tell you, the Lord knows what he's

  54. doing. We got one chapter on sex. We got

  55. two on how to fight. Can I get a

  56. witness? And so, uh, that is where we're

  57. going to be today in Song of Songs 5

    Song of Solomon 5:2

  58. verse 2. Song of Songs chapter 5:2. We

  59. got a lot of scripture to read. We're

  60. going all the way through chapter 6:13.

  61. Uh, I don't know why I just felt like

  62. led to say this, too. Um, oftentimes our

  63. how great is our um, band and the people

  64. that uh, have been put together here.

  65. And I think the vocalists always get

  66. their love, but I was just so grateful

  67. for our band. I mean, they are like

  68. leading us into war. And so guys like

  69. Jorge and Steve Tanaka and Brian

  70. Treadwell and Kenny Casel and JW being

  71. up here with us today is just amazing.

  72. And so just grateful for those guys and

  73. felt like it needed to be said for the

  74. way that they've led us. Thank you guys

  75. for how you lead and steward your gifts.

  76. Uh, and thank you for making it easy to

  77. talk about hard things. So, let's do

  78. that together. Uh, we ready for the

  79. word.

  80. >> Song of Songs, chapter 5, beginning in

Song of Solomon 5 chapter mention

  81. verse two. The woman speaks sort of. She

  82. says, "I was sleeping, but my heart was

  83. awake. A sound. My love was knocking."

  84. Man says, "Open to me, my sister, my

  85. darling, my dove, my perfect one. For my

  86. head is drenched with dew, my hair with

  87. droplets of the night." The woman says,

  88. "I have taken off my clothing. How can I

  89. put it back on? I have washed my feet.

  90. How can I get them dirty?" My love

  91. thrust his hand through the opening, and

  92. my feelings were stirred for him. I rose

  93. to open for my love, and my hands

  94. dripped with myrr. My fingers with

  95. flowing myrr on the handles of the bolt.

  96. I opened my love, but my love had turned

  97. and gone away. My heart sank because he

  98. had left. I sought him, but did not find

  99. him. I called him, but he did not

  100. answer. The guards who go about the city

  101. found me. They beat me and wounded me.

  102. They took my cloak from me. The

  103. guardians of the walls, young women of

  104. Jerusalem, I charge you. If you find my

  105. love, tell him that I am lovesick. We

  106. see that her friends would speak and

  107. say, "What makes the one that you love

  108. better than another, most beautiful of

  109. women? What makes him better than

  110. another that you would give us this

  111. charge?" To which the woman says, "My

  112. love is fit and strong, notable among

  113. 10,000. His head is purest gold. His

  114. hair is wavy and black as a raven. His

  115. eyes are like doves beside flowing

  116. streams washed in milk and set like

  117. jewels. His cheeks are like beds of

  118. spice, mountains of perfume. His lips

  119. are liies dripping with flowing myrr.

  120. His arms are rods of gold set with

  121. barrel. His body is an ivory panel

  122. covered in lapis lazuli. His legs are

  123. alabaster pillars set on pedestals of

  124. pure gold. His presence is like Lebanon,

  125. as majestic as the cedars. His mouth is

  126. sweetness. He is absolutely desirable.

  127. This is my love and this is my friend,

  128. young women of Jerusalem. That's how my

  129. wife talks about me every day when I

  130. walk in. Just so we're clear. I'm just

  131. like, man, alabaster. Here we go. Uh

  132. young woman says, her friends go, "Where

  133. has your love gone, most beautiful of

  134. women? Which way has he turned? We will

  135. seek him with you. Woman says, "My love

  136. has gone down to his garden, the beds of

  137. spices to feed in the gardens and gather

  138. liies. I am my loves and my love is

  139. mine. He feeds among the liies." To

  140. which the man says, "You are as

  141. beautiful as tears, my darling, lovely

  142. as Jerusalem, all inspiring as an army

  143. with banners. Turn your eyes away from

  144. me, for they captivate me. Your hair is

  145. like a flock of goats streaming down

  146. from Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock

  147. of you coming up from washing, each one

  148. having a twin and not one missing.

  149. Praise God. Behind your veil, your brow

  150. is like a slice of pomegranate. And

  151. there are 60 queens and 80 concubines,

  152. and young women without number. But my

  153. dove, my virtuous one, is unique. She's

  154. the She's the favorite of her mother,

  155. perfect to the one who gave her birth.

  156. Women see her and declare her fortunate.

  157. Queens and concubines also, and they

  158. sing her praises. Who is this who shines

  159. like the dawn, as beautiful as the moon,

  160. bright as the sun, all inspiring as an

  161. army with banners? The woman says, 'I

  162. came down to the walnut grove to see the

  163. blossoms of the valley, to see if the

  164. vines were budding and the pomegranates

  165. blooming. I didn't know what was

  166. happening to me. I felt like I was in a

  167. chariot with a nobleman. Her friend

  168. said, "Come back. Come back, Schulamite.

  169. Come back. Come back that we may look at

  170. you." And the man said, "How you gaze at

  171. the Shulamite as you look at the dance

  172. of the two camps." Let's pray together.

  173. Uh well Lord, we're grateful for the

  174. fact that uh you are doing something in

  175. and through uh this church and your

  176. people, but Lord, we are firm believers

  177. that uh we want to be a people that have

  178. strong families as well. And that begins

  179. with the way that we're functioning in

  180. our marriage. And Lord, that is

  181. difficult. Uh Lord, you know that you

  182. you put pen to paper here in your

  183. sovereignty because you knew that we

  184. would find ourselves in moments where we

  185. would be dealing with marital tensions

  186. and conflicts. And so, Father, would you

  187. give us what it is that we need to

  188. navigate those different, Lord? Even if

  189. we handle things well, would you help us

  190. to handle them better, Lord? Even if

  191. we're in here and we found ourselves in

  192. a place where we were fighting on the

  193. way to church this morning, would you

  194. give us what we need in order to come

  195. together stronger than ever before?

  196. Lord, we love you. We praise you. We ask

  197. these things in Jesus name. Amen.

  198. Well, I remember a little while ago now

  199. uh that I found myself on a particular

  200. day where I was running from meeting to

  201. meeting to meeting to meeting to meeting

  202. to meeting and it just felt like it was

  203. never going to end. And I was really

  204. looking forward to the reprieve of being

  205. home with my family that evening and

  206. spending some time uh with Lindsay and

  207. the kids. But unfortunately and somewhat

  208. fortunately, I ended up getting a call

  209. on the way home from work. Uh, and it

  210. was a call from someone that was telling

  211. me about another friend that we both

  212. knew that found themselves in a

  213. particularly difficult place and that

  214. somebody needed to have a very hard

  215. conversation with them and that I had

  216. somehow gotten tabbed as being the one

  217. that should do that. And there was an

  218. incredible amount of urgency that was

  219. surrounding it. This needed to happen

  220. tonight. And so I ended up going home

  221. and I had about a brief hour window

  222. there where I could play with the kids

  223. and I could talk to Lindsay and she was

  224. more than gracious about allowing me to

  225. go and do this because it kind of comes

  226. with the job sometimes. Uh, and so she

  227. actually ended up asking me a question

  228. though that is something that you would

  229. have to know me really well in order to

  230. ask. And so, uh, Lindsay knows that I

  231. have this real struggle where I I don't

  232. eat all day and I'll forget to eat. Uh,

  233. eating is an inconvenience to me. I'm

  234. not a foodie. Like, give me some chicken

  235. tenders and some fries and let's ride

  236. for the glory of God. And I I'm just

  237. like, you know, but oftentimes I just

  238. won't eat because there's a million

  239. things that I got to do. And then I get

  240. to the end of the day and I'm like

  241. irritable and frustrated. I'm like, man,

  242. what's going on? And she's like, have

  243. you eaten? I'm like, no. She's like,

  244. have Snickers. Uh, and I'm just like,

  245. that's kind of the way that it goes. And

  246. so I had gotten home and before I left,

  247. she was like, "Hey, before you have a

  248. hard conversation, have you eaten yet?"

  249. And I was like, "No." So she made me

  250. this quesadilla that I could bring with

  251. me and eat on the way to have this hard

  252. conversation. And so I'm in the middle

  253. of having the conversation and I'm

  254. feeling my phone buzz in my pocket. And

  255. I wait until this person that I'm

  256. talking to goes to use the restroom. And

  257. I end up looking at my phone and I have

  258. a text from Lindsay and she says, "How

  259. is it?" And I said, "It's horrible. Uh,

  260. it's not going well." Uh, and she and

  261. she was like, "Oh, uh, I'm I'm sorry."

  262. And I emphasized the message. And then I

  263. said, "And then I said,"Yeah, it's not

  264. good. We can talk later."

  265. And I get a text that says dot dot dot.

  266. Okay.

  267. Well, listen. I mean, she's there alone

  268. with the kids. I don't know what that's

  269. like. It's probably crazy. Like, you

  270. know, whatever. But, you know, this is

  271. what we signed up for. She knows it's

  272. going to be fine. But I go back home and

  273. I walk across the front door of my home

  274. and you know when you can like feel the

  275. wrath of God in your house

  276. and all the lights are on and she's

  277. usually asleep. But I walk in, she's got

  278. her feet kicked up on the kitchen table,

  279. her arms folded and she is waiting for

  280. me

  281. and she says,

  282. "How was your night?" And I was like,

  283. "Uh, it was hard, but it ended up being

  284. good. Why?" And she goes, "Well,

  285. sorry you had a hard night and a

  286. horrible dinner." And I was like, "A

  287. horrible dinner?" I was like, "No." I

  288. was like, "Dinner. Dinner was fine. What

  289. are you talking about?" She said, "You

  290. said it was horrible." And I was like,

  291. "What? What are you talking about right

  292. now?" To which SHE WAS LIKE, "YOU JUST"

  293. AND then and then all of a sudden I

  294. watch something started to click for her

  295. that hadn't clicked yet for me. Feminine

  296. applause. And we see that all of a

  297. sudden she starts to crack a smile and

  298. she starts bursting out laughing. And I

  299. was like, "What is going on?" AND SHE

  300. SAID, "I WAS ASKING YOU HOW THE

  301. QUESADILLA IS, NOT HOW THE CONVERSATION

  302. WAS. YOU SAID THE conversation was going

  303. to BE HARD. WHY WOULD I ask you if

  304. something's going to be difficult if I

  305. already know it's going to be difficult?

  306. Ask how the food was." And I was like,

  307. "BECAUSE IT WAS THE NUMBER ONE THING ON

  308. MY MIND. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I'M

  309. NOT THINKING ABOUT I'M WONDERING if

  310. she's thinking how the quesadilla was.

  311. It's quesadilla. IT WAS GOOD. What are

  312. you TALKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW?" I'M LIKE,

  313. "WHY ARE YOU EVEN UP?" AND SHE JUST

  314. SAID, "I STAYED UP TO TELL YOU I'M NEVER

  315. MAKING FOOD FOR YOU AGAIN. WHAT IS WRONG

  316. WITH YOU?" LIKE, and I was just

  317. And we both ended up dying laughing

  318. and fell asleep.

  319. And I say that to you because we had hit

  320. a crossroads of miscommunication that

  321. could only be solved with better

  322. communication and quicker female

  323. intelligence than I was able to give in

  324. that moment. Now, I say that to you

  325. because people ask me all the time,

  326. Luke, do godly men and women fight? Do

  327. godly couples fight? Do you and Lindsay

  328. fight? To which I, you know,

  329. YEAH. LIKE, YEAH, for sure. And I think

  330. for many of us, we know that that's

  331. true. And yet, we feel a deep level of

  332. shame in our own marriages when we're

  333. dealing with that. And I think even when

  334. we look at this couple, we can be like,

  335. man, everything looks perfect for them.

  336. I mean everything that goes wrong is

  337. just like these people are like Disney.

  338. Like what is going on? And yet we see

  339. that they have had issues. If you go

  340. back to Song of Songs chapter 2:15, you

  341. will recall that in that moment there

  342. was a a situation where they too were

  343. dealing with the issue of some external

  344. complications. And it says in verse 15,

  345. "Catch the foxes for us, the little

  346. foxes that ruin the vineyards, for our

  347. vineyard is in bloom." That what we see

  348. happening is that there was something

  349. external they were dealing with. If you

  350. recall, they called in the community to

  351. help them deal with it. But now we see

  352. that while they've faced external

  353. issues, they also are going to have to

  354. face some internal ones that are going

  355. to be difficult to deal with and manage.

  356. And so we look at verse two in Song of

Song of Solomon 5 chapter mention

  357. Songs chapter 5 and we see that the

  358. woman is kind of having a a conversation

  359. and we see that the man is certainly

  360. trying to have one. Uh and the woman

  361. says this, "I was sleeping but my heart

  362. was awake. A sound, my love was

  363. knocking." And the man says, 'Open to

  364. me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my

  365. perfect one. For my head is drenched

  366. with dew and my hair with droplets of

  367. the night.' Uh kind of confusing. We see

  368. that she says that she was sleeping, but

  369. her heart was awake. And so there have

  370. been some commentators that have debated

  371. like, is she dreaming or like what

  372. exactly is going on here? I don't really

  373. know. Uh but I would actually submit to

  374. you that I think uh this is more so that

  375. she has literally found herself in a

  376. place where she's gotten ready for bed.

  377. Her husband's been at work all day. She

  378. hasn't heard from him. She's ready to be

  379. like lights out and done with the day.

  380. Uh, and she's somewhere between dozing

  381. off and being fully asleep, but she's

  382. still a little bit awake, wondering

  383. where is he? Why is he out so late? And

  384. so, it's interesting that we see that

  385. all of a sudden as she is getting ready

  386. to fall asleep, here comes her men home

  387. from work. And he knocks on the door and

  388. what does he say? He says, "Open to me.

  389. Let me ask you, what do you think this

  390. brother wants?"

  391. It's not a trick question, but also

  392. don't say it out loud. Do you understand

  393. what I'm saying? like he is hoping for

  394. some level of intimacy. He is knocking

  395. on the door. He's been working hard all

  396. day. He's coming home that night. And in

  397. the process of it, you got to remember

  398. my man has been scaling mountains,

  399. ascending hills. He has made sure

  400. there's no obstacle between them. He is

  401. not knocking on the door at 11:00 p.m.

  402. going, "Could I interest you in a board

  403. game? I was thinking shoots and

  404. ladders." NO, NO, NO. HE'S GOT ONE THING

  405. ON HIS MIND. And as they find themselves

  406. in this place, notice the language that

  407. he'll use. He's using wedding night

  408. language. He says, "Open to me, my

  409. sister, my bride, my dove, my darling,

  410. my perfect one." He is laying on the

  411. compliments here. And as he's doing

  412. that, you have to recognize like,

  413. "Ladies, you would find that a little

  414. suspicious, right?" Can you imagine if

  415. your man took off work and said, "Hey,

  416. tomorrow I was thinking that we could go

  417. to Starbucks in the morning. There's a

  418. book that you've wanted to read, and I I

  419. know it's just always something kind of

  420. getting in the way." And I just thought

  421. just maybe an hour and a half

  422. uninterrupted time and I'll just kind of

  423. be there and if there's anything you

  424. think I need to work on in our marriage,

  425. you just stop what you're reading and

  426. you say to me, "Hey, you got some things

  427. you need to work on. I'll just be right

  428. there." I was thinking after that, we'd

  429. go to Target. Just think the house could

  430. use some sprucing up and thought, you

  431. know what, you deserve that. You deserve

  432. to go and figure out what we need from

  433. Target and not worry about the prices.

  434. And then I was noticing we're kind of

  435. low on Lululemon gear. Actually, no.

  436. This is that's not really it. It's it's

  437. it's aloe. We need aloe. This is the day

  438. that Aloe has made. And so, let's go and

  439. grab some of that. And then I was

  440. thinking from there, like I've got a

  441. pedicure schedule. don't have to do it.

  442. But then there's lunch uh that I also

  443. made sure that we're going to have time

  444. for and you just pick the place and I'll

  445. take care of the bill. You'd say, "What

  446. did you do? What's going on? What's

  447. wrong with you? Something something's

  448. up." He's knocking on the door and he's

  449. got water droplets from the night. He's

  450. been out all day. He shows up at night.

  451. He's put his music on shuffle on his way

  452. home and it's been Barry White, Luther

  453. Vandross, Marvin Gay. And he's like,

  454. "What is SHE UP TO RIGHT NOW?" AND SO WE

  455. see that he's knocking on the door and

  456. she responds in verse three. What does

  457. she say? She says, "I've taken off my

  458. clothing. How can I put it back on? I've

  459. washed my feet. How can I get them

  460. dirty?" What we see here is that in

  461. Hebrew, in the original language, uh

  462. this is Hebrew for I have a headache and

  463. my legs aren't shaved.

  464. You know,

  465. uh that here he's pulling up and he's

  466. like, "What are you doing?" And she's

  467. like, "Get out of here, son. I haven't

  468. heard from you all day. What are you

  469. talking about? What am I up to? I'm

  470. almost asleep. Is what I'm up to. What

  471. are you up to? Uh she's like, this is

  472. this is not happening. This is not

  473. happening. This is crazy talk from you

  474. right now. They've hit a point of

  475. miscommunication.

  476. And we see that they're going to have to

  477. figure out how do we navigate that. Ever

  478. been there before?

  479. >> Yeah. Some of you are like, we were

  480. practicing this on the way here. Like,

  481. yeah. No, I know exactly what you're

  482. talking about. And so, what we see

  483. though is that they're going to

  484. demonstrate a couple of things that are

  485. really helpful for us in the way that we

  486. navigate this. And I think the first

  487. thing that we see is that there's

  488. hesitation in retaliation. Hesitation

  489. and retaliation. Uh often times we are

  490. misaligned in our marriages because of

  491. some level of miscommunication. I

  492. actually ended up taking some time to go

  493. through all of these different uh

  494. lawyers pages and different articles

  495. about what the reasons are that people

  496. end up fighting in their marriage and

  497. they end up getting divorced even. And I

  498. ended up synthesizing those down in chat

  499. GPT until it gave me something that was

  500. bite-sized enough to be able to preach

  501. that in a short span of time. Uh, and so

  502. it's interesting. There are are really

  503. five major things that can end up giving

  504. people problems that I think we need to

  505. know here as well. And so, uh, when you

  506. hear yours, say amen. If you can't say

  507. amen, say ouch. Uh, and I think, uh,

  508. what we understand though is that the

  509. biggest one is miscommunication, the

  510. communication issues in general. Uh, and

  511. really that one could just underly all

  512. of them. But I decided it's such a big

  513. issue that you've got to put it number

  514. one and make it that prevalent because

  515. communication issues can underly

  516. everything else, right? can mess with

  517. the way that you talk about chores or

  518. finances or sex, whatever it might be,

  519. right? The second thing that we saw is

  520. household responsibilities. If you're

  521. someone that's been married for a long

  522. time, you've probably sorted these

  523. things out. If you're someone that's

  524. newly married or wants to be married,

  525. uh, then you probably have this uh weird

  526. idea that you're just going to show up

  527. in the marriage and everyone's just

  528. going to do everything equally and we're

  529. just going to be equal and just nobody's

  530. going to have to do extra on certain

  531. weeks. And we just got it. And it's just

  532. like, no. uh like you watched your mom

  533. do this and your dad do that or your mom

  534. do that and your dad do this and you

  535. have expectations of who's going to do

  536. what and so cooking and cleaning don't

  537. just happen someone has to do it who's

  538. filing taxes what's the deal how are we

  539. going to do this uh we also saw

  540. parenting and children were a big one do

  541. you want someone to stay home are we

  542. talking about doing private school is

  543. public school fine what what about uh

  544. disciplining the kids like in at this

  545. generation I think a good question is

  546. like are we even going to discipline

  547. them like what's the deal like how's

  548. this going to work

  549. uh with finances. It wasn't just

  550. finances, but practices. It's not about

  551. the amount of income that you make. More

  552. people have a problem with the practices

  553. that people demonstrate in their

  554. marriage with the income that they

  555. generate. And so, I think for many of

  556. us, we understand like if you're

  557. struggling to pay your mortgage, but

  558. your husband comes home with the 57th

  559. limited edition lightsaber, that's a

  560. problem. Uh but then there are some of

  561. us that hypothetically speaking don't

  562. know how to say no to Amazon, right? Uh

  563. that there are things that we can deal

  564. with. Uh it the final thing was

  565. expectations and values. that many of

  566. our issues come from unmet or unrealized

  567. expectations and things that really

  568. shape our values where you go, hey, like

  569. how much time are we going to spend with

  570. your family or my family or any family?

  571. What does that look like? Does someone

  572. go to church here and someone goes to

  573. church there and you disagree on God,

  574. but you think it's all going to work

  575. out? Uh like like what does that look

  576. like in your life? Right? Here's the

  577. deal. To be married is to understand

  578. that we're going to have

  579. miscommunication

  580. and some unmet and unrealized

  581. expectations. Can I get a witness? We

  582. understand this. And yet, what's crazy

  583. is I think whether you're a believer or

  584. not, there seems to be this idea that to

  585. be a believer is almost synonymous with

  586. meaning that we're not going to struggle

  587. as much as other people. We're not going

  588. to have the same issues. And so then you

  589. see that Christians will get married and

  590. they find themselves going, "Wait a

  591. minute. I I love them, but I don't like

  592. them right now. I don't know what's

  593. going on." that we're having issues with

  594. each other, we're fighting, and then you

  595. feel all of this shame because you're

  596. going, "Wait, why are we dealing with

  597. some of these things? I didn't realize

  598. that we were going to have to work

  599. through this." And listen, to be a

  600. believer in Jesus is to understand, it's

  601. not going to change what you go through.

  602. It's going to change how you go through

  603. it. To be a believer in Jesus does not

  604. change what you go through, it changes

  605. how you go through it. And I think often

  606. times what can become us fighting with

  607. each other needs to become us fighting

  608. with each other. That it's not that

  609. we're taking on issues with one another

  610. so much as we're taking on issues

  611. together. That we want to move from

  612. being people that are quick to have some

  613. kind of reaction and retaliation and

  614. rather be a people of reconciliation and

  615. restoration. Right? And so we see that

  616. this couple is going to do that well.

  617. And we see really that it's going to

  618. start with them acknowledging that this

  619. isn't just an external thing that

  620. they're dealing with, but there are some

  621. internal things in them, right? And

  622. really that's not me just like throwing

  623. something out there. That's James 4:1.

    James 4:1

  624. James chapter 4 verse one would say,

    James 4 chapter mention

  625. "What causes quarrels and fights among

  626. you? Don't they come from your passions

  627. that wage war within you?" Which I love

  628. how direct James is. He's like, "Hey,

  629. let me ask a question and then because

  630. you're not going to do it fast enough,

  631. let me give you the answer." Uh he says,

  632. "Hey, uh what is it that causes quarrels

  633. and fights among you? Isn't it those

  634. passions that wage war within you that

  635. we're getting this indication that our

  636. interpersonal struggles and our marital

  637. struggles often come from the fact that

  638. yes, we deal with things externally, but

  639. there are things internally that we have

  640. to work through with how we're dealing

  641. with that, right? Uh and so I don't know

  642. how you handle that, but I think a good

  643. thing to know is what is your go-to? Uh

  644. in in my marriage, it's funny. I am

  645. fight and she is flight.

  646. I'm just like, oh, there's an issue.

  647. Boom. Let's tackle that right now. How

  648. you doing? Let's do this. Come on. AND

  649. SHE'S JUST LIKE WHOOP. NOPE. Like let's

  650. let's do it in three weeks, you know? Uh

  651. and we'll circle back to it at some

  652. point, right? Uh and both are not good

  653. if they're not handled properly. Uh some

  654. of you, you're not fight or flight.

  655. You're the worst. You're smack and run.

  656. Like that's what you like to do, right?

  657. You're just like whoop, poke the bear,

  658. like you know, that's how you handle it.

  659. And so you've got to know how is it that

  660. I respond in the middle of this? What

  661. are those internal things in me and the

  662. way that I deal with tension in our

  663. marriage and I love that regardless of

  664. what their bend is, there's still

  665. hesitation and retaliation. You see it

  666. in verses four and five. She says, "My

  667. love thrust his hand through the

  668. opening." She's talking about the door,

  669. talking about the lock that's on the

  670. door. She says, "My feelings were

  671. stirred for him. I rose to open for my

  672. love. My hands dripped with myrr. My

  673. fingers flowing with myrr on the handles

  674. of the bolt that we see here. Uh she

  675. hears her husband's hand at the door. Uh

  676. and she didn't really want to get up

  677. immediately and go see him, but then she

  678. realizes, I don't want to miss him. Uh

  679. and so she goes to the door, but he's

  680. already gone. And she goes to touch uh

  681. the h the door handle or the bolt on it,

  682. and she realizes uh there's there's

  683. something on it that there's myrr on her

  684. hand. Now, myrrh is something that was

  685. rather expensive. It was imported at

  686. great cost from Arabia, and so it was

  687. something that would be used kind of as

  688. a perfume rather sparingly. But what's

  689. interesting here is that he's not using

  690. it as a perfume sparingly. We see that

  691. her husband has anointed the boat with

  692. this myrr. And that's interesting that

  693. the door, the latch on the door, the

  694. very thing that separated this couple in

  695. this moment, what did her husband do? He

  696. blessed it. He blessed it. That we see

  697. that they have reached a place of

  698. miscommunication.

  699. She wants sleep. He wants sex. Tale as

  700. old as time. And we see that in that

  701. He's feeling all this rejection and she

  702. waits a moment and then feels

  703. reservations about the way that she has

  704. handled this moment. And when he finds

  705. himself in that moment of rejection and

  706. she finds her going to meet him, all of

  707. a sudden in that moment, she recognizes

  708. that the very representation of his

  709. rejection, that bolt that separated us

  710. in this moment where he felt wounded, he

  711. blessed. Now he's the king. He could

  712. easily say, "Hey, I'm the king and

  713. there's no locks in my kingdom, honey.

  714. Open up this door." He doesn't do that.

  715. But where he's hurting, he extends

  716. blessing. That we see that this is a

  717. demonstration of grace here. That he

  718. doesn't retaliate in some way or take

  719. this out on her, but rather he's gentle

  720. in his response. And I think we see

  721. demonstrations of this all throughout

  722. scripture. Uh you look at 1 Peter 3:es 8

  723. and 9. It says, "Finally, all of you be

  724. like-minded and sympathetic. Love one

  725. another. Be compassionate and humble.

  726. Not paying back evil for evil or insult

  727. for insult. Man, could we use that word

  728. in this day? But on the contrary, giving

  729. a blessing since you were called for

  730. this so that you may inherit a blessing.

  731. Easier said than done,

  732. right? No, y'all got it. You good? You

  733. know, you got it every time. You don't

  734. even retaliate. One of y'all can get up

  735. here and teach this then because here's

  736. the deal. What we see is that this is

  737. easier said than done. How can the Lord

  738. say this? Cuz that's what he does with

  739. us. That's exactly what he does with us.

  740. We see with this husband where he's been

  741. wounded, he's blessed, where he's

  742. hurting, he extends anointing. There's

  743. grace all over this. And we see in a

  744. much greater way, and I'm not all of a

  745. sudden going to make this an allegorical

  746. interpretation of Song of Songs. But we

  747. see that Jesus Christ demonstrates this

  748. to us, that we see that Jesus took on

  749. our sin, our rebellion, and our

  750. retaliation against God. And we see that

  751. he would be wounded that we might be

  752. blessed. What did he do wrong? Nothing.

  753. But he took this on himself that we

  754. might be a people that are a bloodbought

  755. people that understand when we repent of

  756. our sins and place our faith in him that

  757. he took on these wounds and made a way

  758. to God when we had no business having

  759. someone else coming to rescue us in the

  760. midst of our story. But that's what the

  761. Lord did. And we see that this husband

  762. in a much less significant way extends

  763. grace in his hesitation and retaliation.

  764. The second thing that we see is that

  765. there's initiation towards

  766. reconciliation.

  767. In verse six, you see that the woman

  768. said, "I opened to my love, but my love

  769. had turned and gone away. My heart sank

  770. because he had left. I sought him but

  771. did not find him. I called him but he

  772. did not answer." And so we see that

  773. she's going to initiate here. There's

  774. initiation towards reconciliation.

  775. Here's her husband's hand at the door.

  776. realizes that she's missed him and now

  777. there's this disconnection and distance

  778. not just physically but also emotionally

  779. and she does not like that. She is not

  780. excited about that at all. I think we're

  781. aware of the fact that whenever you're

  782. facing any kind of conflict or marital

  783. tension in your marriage, that is a

  784. moment where things can easily end up

  785. tearing you further apart or you can be

  786. tender towards one another. They are

  787. choosing reconciliation over retaliation

  788. in this moment. And I think often times

  789. whenever we're fighting with our spouse,

  790. there can be this underlying thing in us

  791. that feels like we need to be winning

  792. and they need to be losing. And I think

  793. we understand that winning and losing is

  794. something that happens when you're

  795. competing. But when you're submitting to

  796. one another, we see that it's completely

  797. different. You recognize I can be right

  798. or I can be married.

  799. I can be right or I can be married. And

  800. that doesn't mean that you won't have

  801. issues that you must resolve. Unresolved

  802. issues often can end up becoming

  803. unhealthy patterns. One of the worst

  804. phrases in the world is that time heals

  805. all wounds. Heals some. But the fact of

  806. the matter is it can also harden some

  807. old wounds and it can allow things to

  808. fester and disease to spread. And so

  809. they must be dealt with, but in a way to

  810. where there's grace that we initiate in

  811. reconciling with our spouse, not just

  812. being like, "They better get over here

  813. and apologize to me at some point." That

  814. we want to both be good at reconciling

  815. in that way. And I think we understand

  816. that we all have different ways of

  817. responding whenever we're wounded. Is it

  818. bad if you need a moment? No. But you

  819. got to be honest with yourself. Like,

  820. are we passive aggressive?

  821. No. Silent treatment.

  822. or do we extend grace? And we see grace

  823. all over this fight that they're dealing

  824. with. And something really weird happens

  825. in verse 7. Uh she says that the guards

  826. who go about the city found me. They

  827. beat me and wounded me. Then they took

  828. my cloak from me, the guardians of the

  829. walls. And some of us can be like,

  830. "Whoa, whoa, I mean what's going on?"

  831. Well, has someone just beaten up the

  832. king's bride here? No. Uh because we you

  833. would be dead that afternoon. So no,

  834. that is not what's going on. There are a

  835. lot of people that when we talk about

  836. the watchmen, they think uh is that like

  837. a dream sequence or something? And we've

  838. seen uh some parts of that in other

  839. places of Song of Songs, but really

  840. what's happening here is that this isn't

  841. so much probably a dream sequence, but

  842. like her conscience um that she's

  843. feeling insensitive in her part about

  844. what landed them in this fight. Does she

  845. have good reason to be like, "What are

  846. you talking about, man? It's like 11 at

  847. night and you just got home and I

  848. haven't heard from you." Of course, but

  849. she still feels insensitive about her

  850. part and what's causing them separation.

  851. And what we see is that she will end up

  852. going back to familiar counsel that

  853. we've heard a lot from in the Song of

  854. Songs in verse 8. You notice this in

  855. Song of Songs 5:8. She will go and she

    Song of Solomon 5:8

  856. will talk to her friends, young women of

  857. Jerusalem. I charge you if you find my

  858. love, tell him that I am lovesick.

  859. She goes to her friends and says, "Hey,

  860. we're we're dealing with a fight. I'm

  861. trying to figure out how to navigate

  862. that. Can you please help?" But really,

  863. she actually charges them. She says, "I

  864. charge you." uh charge in the original

  865. language actually means to make a solemn

  866. promise or vow uh that it would be an

  867. oath that was established between two

  868. parties and you would call on divine

  869. power. you'd call on God to say, "Hey,

  870. you see this? Hold us to this." She

  871. says, "I charge you." And then she says,

  872. "Because I'm lovesick." And loves sick,

  873. I think, to us, can just sound like like

  874. a bad Taylor Swift lyric or something

  875. like that. And lovesick actually uh it's

  876. worse than that. It really means to be

  877. diseased or wounded by love with love

  878. that she she's really going through it.

  879. She calls on her friends. Friends are

  880. really important. Do you understand

  881. this? like like friends are a

  882. unbelievably important part of our life

  883. especially if they've got any kind of

  884. margin to speak into your life and your

  885. marriage and I think for many of us we

  886. understand you do not get to choose your

  887. family good bad ugly indifferent you

  888. don't get to choose your family you do

  889. get to choose your friends and there's

  890. something beautiful about the title of

  891. friend why because it's this

  892. acknowledgement between one another hey

  893. I chose you and you chose me and we said

  894. let's walk together in this life the

  895. good things and the hard things and so

  896. she's going to this group that's not

  897. just going encourager in her marriage

  898. from the beginning, but continually is

  899. around her even when they're dealing

  900. with some conflict. And she says, "I

  901. need you to be encouraging and I need

  902. your understanding. I need your counsel

  903. and I need your challenge. Can you speak

  904. into this?" And we see that they'll

  905. respond, but they do so in kind of an

  906. interesting way that in verse 8 and n

  907. she says, "Young women of Jerusalem, I

  908. charge you. If you find my love, tell

  909. him I'm lovesick." And her friends say,

  910. "Well, what makes the one that you love

  911. better than another most beautiful of

  912. women? what makes him better than

  913. another that you would give us this

  914. charge. Uh which can sound really odd.

  915. Um they've been really supportive up to

  916. this point and now it can feel like

  917. they've changed their tune here. Now

  918. there some commentators that have

  919. wondered and I think for some of us that

  920. are familiar with King Solomon's story

  921. and I'll address this more here later

  922. on. We can go well we know that Solomon

  923. would eventually become an adulterer.

  924. Like as amazing as he sounds in the Song

  925. of Songs, he's got his issues. He'll

  926. eventually have 700 wives and 300

  927. concubines. So,

  928. you know, which that's crazy. Uh, but

  929. and we'll address that. So, there are

  930. some commentators that think, well,

  931. maybe it's that her friends all of a

  932. sudden are just out on Solomon because

  933. they know that he's like other kings in

  934. the ancient near east that would use

  935. their power to just kind of be with

  936. whatever woman they wanted to whenever

  937. they wanted to. And I actually don't

  938. know that that's the case here because

  939. it wouldn't make sense for the story to

  940. continue to unfold in chapters 7 and 8

  941. the way that it does if that was the

  942. case. uh but more so I think her friends

  943. are being good friends here that we see

  944. that they say hey remind us what do you

  945. love about him what do you love about

  946. him and I think that's significant for

  947. us to understand because we see that the

  948. third thing that we need to understand

  949. in marital conflict is that we should

  950. have a recollection of admiration for

  951. our spouse a recollection of admiration

  952. look at verse 10 they ask her they ask

  953. her as this friend group hey what do you

  954. love about him and then she launches

  955. into this crazy monologue in verse 10

  956. where she starts off and she says, "My

  957. love is fit and strong, notable among

  958. 10,000." Listen, it's really easy when

  959. you're in a fight with your spouse to be

  960. focused on their flaws.

  961. It's really easy. But I love that this

  962. friend group comes alongside this woman

  963. who's struggling in a conflict in her

  964. marriage and rather than saying like,

  965. "Yeah, he's the worst." That's not what

  966. they do. But instead, they say, "Hey,

  967. can you recall what you love about this

  968. man? And could you tell us about him

  969. again?

  970. that rather than diminish one another's

  971. strengths and elevate weaknesses, we see

  972. that actually there's this reminder for

  973. her of what it is that she loved about

  974. this man and why she committed her life

  975. to him. And I think that is one of the

  976. things that can help be a guard against

  977. the sinister lie of the enemy that would

  978. have us in the midst of marital conflict

  979. go, I wonder what someone else would be

  980. like.

  981. I did see that one person on Facebook

  982. and I was I always kind of wondered.

  983. Here's the thing. You can think that

  984. it's going to work out with someone

  985. else. You're just not close enough to

  986. see the extent of their sinfulness.

  987. It's not going to get better with

  988. someone else. That we all have our

  989. issues. And so we see here that her

  990. friends say, "Tell us what you love

  991. about him." Rather than continually dig

  992. up what it is that he's done wrong. And

  993. she'll do that. And we see that she will

  994. do that in a crazy way. That she'll talk

  995. about his appearance on an outward

  996. level. and really his character on an

  997. inward level. And she just starts off in

  998. verses 11 and 12 and says, "His head is

  999. the purest gold. His hair is wavy and

1000. black as a raven. His eyes are like

1001. doves beside flowing streams washed in

1002. milk and set like jewels." And so when

1003. she says that his head is the purest

  1004. gold, she's saying that uh he's he's

  1005. prized, he's valued, he's regal, he

1006. carries himself like a king, not just

1007. because he is a king, but he'd carry

1008. himself like that anyway. He's the man.

1009. But then we see that she'll say his hair

1010. is wavy and black. There's nothing of

1011. crazy theological depth there. She just

1012. likes that my man's got these locks of

1013. love right there. All right. Like she's

1014. like, "Man, he's got those nice flowy

  1015. hair. G curly. He He's He's got nice

1016. hair." All right. And then she says that

1017. his eyes are like doves. They're

1018. peaceful. They're gentle. But she also

1019. says they're glistening like flowing

  1020. streams. That there's there's a shine to

1021. them. And she says that the whites of

1022. his eyes that they're that washed in

1023. milk. Tommy Nelson, who's the best who

1024. have ever preached this book. uh and

1025. I'll never come close to it, made an

  1026. interesting observation. He actually

1027. ended up saying that this is probably

1028. saying that he hasn't been captivated by

1029. substances of any kind, that the whites

1030. of his eyes are clear, that his focus is

1031. there. And then we see that she would

1032. say, and they're set like jewels, which

1033. is just to say that his eyes are in a

1034. handsome place, that he doesn't look

1035. like the guy from the Goonies or

1036. anything, like everything looks correct.

1037. All right? And so she goes in verses 13

1038. and 14 and says, "His cheeks are like

1039. beds of spice, mounds of perfume. His

1040. lips are liies dripping with flowing

1041. myrr. His arms are rods of gold set with

1042. barrel. His body is an ivory panel

1043. covered with lapis lazuli." She says his

1044. cheeks are like spice and perfume.

  1045. There's a glow and a peel. She's

1046. probably saying, "My man's beard smells

1047. good." Uh she says that his lips are

1048. flowing with myrr, which is to say that

1049. his lips are desirable. You remember

1050. that he said that about her last week,

1051. that her lips are like a scarlet cord.

1052. And now she's saying, "I like your lips,

1053. too." that they're kind of having one of

1054. these like, you know, moments, but

1055. that's what's going on here. And then

1056. she says, "His arms are like rods of

1057. gold." She says, "My man is shredded."

1058. Like some of the finer elements of this

1059. world. And then she says, "His body is

1060. an ivory panel, which means that his abs

1061. still have some level of prominence. He

1062. still hits the gym." And, you know, good

1063. for that guy. You know, whatever. Like,

  1064. good for him.

  1065. Whatever.

1066. We act. We don't know if that's what it

1067. means. Who knows what it means? It's

  1068. fine.

  1069. Verse 15

1070. says, "His legs are alabaster pillars

1071. set on pedestals, pure goals. His

1072. presence like Lebanon, majestic as the

1073. cedars. His mouth is sweetness. He's

1074. absolutely desirable. That is my love

1075. and my friend. Legs are alabaster

1076. pillars. He doesn't skip leg day.

1077. Presents are cedars. We remember that

1078. the cedars of Lebanon were the timber

1079. that was used for the finest

1080. constructions in the ancient world. You

1081. ever met someone that they just have a

1082. presence when they walk in the room?

1083. They stand strong, tall. People just

1084. kind of know if they're there. She's

1085. saying, "My man is the man. He's him."

1086. That every time he walks into a room,

1087. people know that he's there. He's got

1088. this presence about him. Says that his

1089. mouth is sweetness. And this is talking

1090. about character as well. She's already

1091. talked about his lips. It wouldn't make

1092. sense to then come back around and talk

1093. about that. And so now she says his

1094. mouth is sweetness. And the idea here is

1095. that he's filled with wisdom.

1096. I mean, Solomon wrote Song of Songs.

  1097. Obviously, he wrote Proverbs,

  1098. Ecclesiastes. There's wisdom, Solomon.

  1099. She says, "Finally,

1100. you're my lover and my friend." And what

1101. I love is she's demonstrated here, "This

1102. man is powerful, but he's gentle with

1103. me." She's not being overly sexual here,

1104. but deeply, deeply, deeply respectful of

1105. him. And notice that she's respectful of

1106. her spouse in front of her friends.

1107. She's respectful of her spouse in front

1108. of her friends. And that goes both ways.

1109. And so you see in verse one, her friends

1110. say, "Where's your love gone, most

1111. beautiful of women? Which way has he

1112. turned? We will seek him with you." And

1113. the woman says, "My love has gone down

1114. to his garden, the beds of spice to feed

1115. in the gardens and gather the liies. I

1116. am my loves, and my love is mine. He

1117. feeds among the liies." That her friends

1118. have heard her talk about him outwardly

1119. and how much she likes his abs and

1120. stuff. And then we see that they've also

1121. recognized the way that she's speaking

  1122. of his character.

1123. And they say, "We'll get involved. You

  1124. haven't forgotten your vows that you've

1125. made. You haven't forgotten the way that

1126. you love this man." And then it gets

1127. kind of interesting. They say, "All

1128. right, where is he?" And she's like,

1129. "He's in the garden." And they're like,

1130. "Is he missing or not?"

1131. And what's interesting is that when she

1132. says he's gone down to the garden,

1133. recall that she's often referred to her

1134. uh body as a garden or a vineyard, but

1135. also it's not just her body, it's also

1136. been a picture of their intimacy and

1137. their love that they share. So, what

1138. she's really saying here is he's not

1139. missing in the sense that he got in the

1140. car and fled the house and I don't know

1141. where he is and I can't find him. She

1142. said he he's not dealing with this in

1143. some kind of crazy immature way. She's

1144. like, I know that he's just down in the

1145. garden and he's probably going to be

1146. making his way back towards me, but I

1147. still need help in initiating

1148. reconciliation towards him. I still need

1149. help in recollection of admiration, but

1150. I know that my love has not left us. And

1151. I love that it says here that he's

1152. feeding and he's gathering in this

1153. garden when he's gathering liies. A lot

1154. of scholars think that he's probably

1155. putting together a bouquet to bring back

1156. to her and say, "I'm sorry for the way

1157. that I've handled this. I should have

1158. been more thoughtful in the way that I

1159. did." And I think there's good reason to

1160. believe that because you will see the

1161. way that he speaks to her in verse four.

1162. The fourth and final thing that we need

1163. to see in our conflicts is that there's

  1164. a demonstration of devotion. There's a

1165. demonstration of devotion. Watch what he

1166. says. He says, "You are as beautiful as

1167. tears, my darling, lovely as Jerusalem,

1168. all inspiring as an army with banners."

1169. The pronoun changes. They've missed each

1170. other all this time. And now he's

1171. talking to her. He says, "You, you."

1172. He says, "You are beautiful like tears,

1173. loveliest Jerusalem." Tears is the most

1174. beautiful city in the north. Jerusalem

1175. the most lovely city in the south. And

1176. he says, "Nothing compares to you.

1177. Nothing compares to you." He says, "And

1178. I'm not leaving you. I've been here, but

1179. I was ready to make my way back to you."

1180. Right? That they have found themselves

1181. resolving this conflict by initiating

1182. with one another, recalling what it is

1183. that they admire about one another, and

1184. demonstrating devotion. You see in

1185. verses 5-7 that he say, "Turn your eyes

1186. away from me, for they captivate me.

1187. Your hair is like a flock of goats

1188. streaming down from Gilead. Your teeth

1189. are like a flock of you coming up from

1190. washing, each one having a twin, not one

1191. missing." Come on. Behind your veil,

1192. your brow is like a slice of

1193. pomegranate. We see that all of this is

  1194. wedding night language, right?

1195. He said, "I chose you and I love you and

1196. you chose me and you loved me. Our

  1197. devotion hasn't gone anywhere. I'm not

1198. going to flee when there's trouble. I'm

1199. right here. I'm right here. But we see

1200. something kind of interesting in verses

1201. 8 and N when it says there are 60 queens

1202. and 80 concubines and young women

1203. without number. But my dove, my virtuous

1204. one, is unique. She's a favorite of her

1205. mother, perfect to the one who gave her

1206. birth. Women see her and declare her

1207. fortunate. Queens and concubines also,

1208. and they sing her praises. Now, uh

1209. Solomon will end up going off the rails

1210. later on in his life. You can read all

1211. about that in Kings and Chronicles. And

1212. I think what we need to know is when

1213. he's talking about queens and concubines

1214. here, he's talking about like an

1215. archetype of women. He he's saying that

1216. there are regal noble women of wealth.

1217. And he's saying and then there's uh the

1218. hot concubine pretty much. And he's

1219. saying, "And none of them compare to

1220. you. Nobody is taking my eyes off you."

1221. Now, there are some of us, and I've had

1222. many people ask me this in the lobby,

1223. over email, whatever, and been like,

1224. "Hey, how can we listen to Song of

1225. Songs?" And Solomon's giving this advice

1226. when at the same time we know that he's

1227. ultimately going to become an adulterer

1228. and have 700 wives and 300 concubines.

1229. Uh to which I would say to you that

1230. scriptural authority is not based on an

  1231. author's perfection. Otherwise, you

  1232. don't have a Bible.

1233. But we we are I think we're so wounded

1234. as a culture when it comes to marriage

1235. and relationships. This one hits

1236. particularly hard and and I have grace

1237. for that. Uh, but I do think it's

1238. interesting. You could just layer that

1239. all over the place. Have you ever lied

  1240. before?

1241. You can participate in that one. You

  1242. ever lied before?

1243. >> Yeah. Yeah. You're all liars, right? So,

1244. so if you ever said anything truthful,

1245. why should I believe you? You've lied

1246. before. I mean, where where does it

  1247. start and stop?

1248. I I think we could do this with other

1249. people. You do this with King David,

1250. right? And by the way, I'm not saying we

1251. need to lower the bar on leadership

1252. expectations, but you could do this with

  1253. King David.

  1254. Adulterer, murderer. He actually

1255. murdered so he could be an adulterer.

  1256. How's that? What a combo.

1257. Psalms are still bringing you peace in

1258. the midst of your trials.

  1259. What about Peter?

1260. You skip first first Peter.

1261. We've read it here today.

1262. Peter denied Christ. Are you really

1263. going to listen to him tell you how to

  1264. follow him?

1265. I mean, Paul, which for whatever reason,

1266. we give Paul just like this unbelievable

1267. pass. We're like, man, what a testimony.

1268. He's out here killing folks left and

1269. right, just killing all these people.

1270. But God rescued him. Wow. And just like,

1271. wait, what? He's killing people.

1272. But he's telling you how to live for

  1273. God.

  1274. Don't have a problem with that.

1275. Here's the thing. And a lot of

1276. commentators, truth be told, believe

  1277. this is Solomon's first wife. I I would

1278. tend to think so or it would be hard for

1279. her to respond the way that she is. Lots

1280. of scenarios. The other thing is that

1281. when you're reading scripture, there are

1282. things that are descriptive and

1283. prescriptive. Just because it's being

  1284. described and historically accurate,

  1285. doesn't mean that that's saying, "Now

1286. you go find a couple more wives." It's

1287. not saying that. It's not making space

  1288. for that. It's not a command. It's not

  1289. prescriptive. It's descriptive.

1290. And I think for us, here's the real flaw

1291. for Solomon. And this is the flaw for

  1292. us.

1293. I've met some incredible men and women

1294. of wisdom that have completely tanked

  1295. their life.

1296. And it's not because they weren't wise

1297. or sharp or any of those things.

1298. It's just that they had wisdom that was

  1299. admired and not obeyed.

1300. And to know what to do and not do it is

  1301. not great.

1302. So Solomon will fail, but not yet.

1303. And we see that he says, "My dove, my

  1304. virtuous one, is unique. She's a

1305. favorite of her mother, perfect to the

1306. one who gave her birth. Women see her

1307. and declare her fortunate. Queens and

1308. concubines also they sing her praises."

1309. He's saying, "In this moment, no one

1310. compares to you." He said, "I'm not

1311. fleeing to this type of person or that

1312. type of person." He said, "I didn't

1313. redownload an app. I didn't go call an

  1314. ex.

1315. I didn't go see what that person at work

1316. is up to." even though we're not in the

1317. same department and just kind of like

1318. make eyes and they walk. I didn't do

1319. that. It's like I'm here for you, not

  1320. leaving you.

1321. And you see in verse 113,

1322. the woman says, "I came down to the

1323. walnut grove to see the blossoms of the

1324. valley to see if the vines were budding

1325. and the pomegranates blooming." She's

1326. saying, "I came to see if everything was

1327. all right, and I didn't know what was

1328. happening to me. I felt like I was in a

1329. chariot with the noblemen." And her

1330. friend group says, "Come back. Come

1331. back, Shulamite. Come back. Come back

1332. that we may look at you." They want to

1333. keep spending time with her. She's

1334. married and so it can be more difficult

1335. to find your time with friends and they

1336. still want to spend time. And I love

1337. this. Her husband will end up jumping in

1338. and he says, "How you gaze at the

1339. Shulamite as you look at the dance of

1340. the two camps." Uh, which could be

1341. particularly risque. So, I'll just say

1342. it like this. He says, "Hey, hey, hey,

1343. hey, thanks for helping find her,

1344. but we're going to go makeup.

  1345. Have a good day."

1346. We'll talk about that more next week.

  1347. Listen,

  1348. uh my

1349. prayer going into this time was this.

1350. Everyone fights. Nobody knows how to

1351. talk about it. And we in particular are

1352. the worst at it in church.

1353. And we got to get a handle on it.

1354. That we would get to a place where we

1355. would say, "This is my lover and this is

1356. my friend. would love to walk around and

1357. be a part of a church where we get

1358. closer and closer to being able to say

1359. that every week. This is my lover and

1360. this is my friend. And some of you are

  1361. really going through it.

1362. And the best thing you could do is find

1363. yourself with your arm around one

1364. another holding hands, praying as we

  1365. worship.

1366. So we need to push the Lord more to the

1367. center of this thing, man.

  1368. hesitation and retaliation, initiation

  1369. towards reconciliation, recollection of

  1370. admiration, demonstration of devotion.

1371. I'm here. Some of you need to come down

  1372. to the altar.

1373. Not because there's anything special

1374. about the altar. You can meet the Lord

1375. just as much up there as you can down

1376. here. But there is something significant

1377. about finding yourself walking in a

1378. vulnerable vulnerable place and saying,

1379. "I need you, God, because things are on

  1380. the rocks.

1381. God in Christ worked towards us with no

1382. good reason to do so on our end. We

1383. rebelled. We retaliated against God. And

  1384. yet

1385. Jesus Christ took on the wounds to make

1386. a way for us that we might be brought

1387. into the family for those of us that

1388. repent of our sins and place our faith

  1389. in him.

1390. And so what would keep us from being

1391. flawed individuals facing a myriad of

1392. different issues? some more complicated

  1393. than others

1394. to say, you know what? I'm going to work

1395. my way towards the one that I pledged

1396. vows to on that incredible day.

1397. That we might see God at work

1398. in ways that are difficult to describe.

1399. That we might walk in here next week and

  1400. say, "You're my lover. You're my

1401. friend." And I'm so glad that God

1402. brought us together to build a life for

1403. such a time as this. strong marriages,

1404. strong families, salt and light in our

1405. community and in this world that would

1406. change Windermir, Orlando, the nation

1407. and the world for the glory of Jesus

1408. Christ. God, that's what we want. That's

  1409. what we want.

1410. Uh and Lord, easier said than done. I

1411. think that could be one sentence for the

1412. whole our whole time together.

1413. Uh, and Lord, I just ask that you would

1414. place boldness in the hearts of couples

1415. to acknowledge need, need of you, desire

  1416. for one another,

1417. Lord. And would you allow us to come

1418. alongside people as a church,

1419. not to shame them, strengthen them like

1420. the Shulamites friends that we might

  1421. say, "Hey,

1422. tell us what you love about them. Tell

1423. us how God's been at work in your life.

1424. Lord, would we have testimonies of that

1425. walking out of this place?

1426. Lord, we love you. We trust you. We ask

1427. these things in Jesus name. Amen.
