  1. Welcome to Key Church, everybody. Y'all

  2. can take a seat. Man, it is so great to

  3. see you and to be here with you all this

  4. morning. I am so grateful that we are

  5. gathered together in this house. And I'm

  6. grateful because today we are continuing

  7. in our collection of conversations that

  8. we've been in since the earth cooled

  9. called Node Rivals. Uh no rivals is a

  10. collection. It's a discussion where we

  11. are living and lingering in the book of

  12. Colossians. And we see that there's this

  13. really heavy focus and fixation on

  14. Jesus, on Christ's lordship and really a

  15. strong declaration of his sufficiency

  16. and supremacy and what it looks like for

  17. you and I, we as a redeemed people to

  18. participate in the death, the

  19. resurrection, and the fullness of life

  20. that can only be found in him. And so we

  21. see that Paul is writing this letter,

  22. this epistle under unique circumstances.

  23. He's in prison, but more than that, he's

  24. neither planted nor visited this church.

  25. And in the midst of that uh we see that

  26. there was a man named Epris who would

  27. hear Paul preach the gospel in Ephesus

  28. take the gospel message all the way back

  29. inland to a city called Colassi where

  30. under his preaching and teaching and

  31. love and leadership we see this

  32. beautiful community of Jesus followers

  33. starts to sprout forth and in that Epris

  34. would become a friend and a collaborer

  35. of Paul's. And so even while Paul is in

  36. prison, Epifris is bringing a report as

  37. to how the church in Colossia is doing.

  38. And we see that the report is overall

  39. very positive. And yet at the same time,

  40. we recognize that there are cultural

  41. pressures in their day that they are

  42. facing. And there are false teachers

  43. that are kind of swarming and swirling

  44. around the church and even trying to

  45. infiltrate it. And so Paul is going to

  46. challenge them. Hey, address the issues

  47. of your day and also make sure that you

  48. are being encouraged into greater

  49. devotion to the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

  50. And so we're going to be in Colossians

  51. 3:es 1-1. We have made it to Colossians

  52. 3, folks. That's where we're going to

  53. be. Don't everybody flip there at once.

  54. Colossians 3 verse 1 through 11. Last

    Colossians 3:1–11

  55. week, uh, we ended up talking about how

  56. Jesus Christ has been victorious for us.

  57. Anybody grateful for that? That Jesus

  58. has triumphed. Um, and we really talked

  59. about, and um, many people on the

  60. internet have disagreed with me. uh that

  61. that we see that uh Romans would say

  62. there are debatable issues and there are

  63. things that are not debatable and among

  64. those debatable issues you don't need to

  65. fight about those but rather you need to

  66. recognize kind of where you stand on

  67. certain things that are not salvific

  68. amazing uh but I told you guys that

  69. really we shouldn't be judging one

  70. another last week but those of you that

  71. love to judge people you're going to

  72. love today uh and so uh raise your hand

  73. if that's you like you're just excited

  74. uh we're going to walk through a couple

  75. of vice lists here that Paul will list.

  76. And so the question that I really just

  77. want to put at the forefront of your

  78. mind as we enter into this text is Jesus

  79. Christ has been victorious.

  80. So why do I still have these vices? What

  81. do I do with those? So let's read

  82. Colossians 3:1. Y'all ready for the

    Colossians 3:1

  83. word?

  84. >> It says, "So if you've been raised with

  85. Christ, seek the things above where

  86. Christ is seated at the right hand of

  87. God. Set your minds on things above, not

  88. on earthly things. For you died and your

  89. life is hidden with Christ in God. When

  90. Christ who is your life, I love that.

  91. Who is your life appears, then you will

  92. also appear with him in glory.

  93. Therefore, uh just shout amen when you

  94. hear your vice listed here. Um

  95. therefore, put to death what belongs to

  96. your earthly nature. Uh sexual

  97. immorality. All right. Impurity.

  98. Hey, listen. There's healing in

  99. confession, folks. All right.

  100. Hey, she might be the only person here

  101. that's actually getting healed today.

  102. Some of y'all are like, "Not me." We'll

  103. talk about it. Don't worry. Impurity.

  104. Any takers? Lust, evil desire, greed,

  105. which is idolatry. Because of these,

  106. God's wrath is coming upon the

  107. disobedient. And you once walked in

  108. these things when you were living in

  109. them. But now, put away all the

  110. following. All right, we got another

  111. list for those of you that were

  112. dishonest with the first one. anger,

  113. wrath, malice, slander, and filthy

  114. language from your mouth. Do not lie to

  115. one another. Since you've put off the

  116. old self with its practices, and have

  117. put on the new self, you are being

  118. renewed in knowledge according to the

  119. image of your creator. In Christ, there

  120. is not Greek and Jews, circumcision and

  121. uncircumcision, barbarian, cyian, slave,

  122. and free, but Christ is all and in all.

  123. Praise God. Uh let's pray together this

  124. morning and just go before our father

  125. who we've enthroned upon the praises of

  126. his people and say Lord um you're high

  127. and lifted up in this place. Uh and

  128. there's not a single person in here that

  129. could try to take your seat. There's not

  130. a single idolatrous thing that we're

  131. dealing with in our life that could

  132. supersede where it is that you sit,

  133. which is at the right hand of the

  134. father. And so, Lord, we're we're here

  135. and we're grateful beyond belief for the

  136. truth of this gospel message. And Lord,

  137. at the same time, uh I know that we've

  138. got people in here that are dealing with

  139. things

  140. uh Lord, many of which have been listed.

  141. The truth of the matter is if we were

  142. all as honest as my sister who shouted

  143. at the very first turn, the fact of the

  144. matter is um we we all could have

  145. shouted for for one of those, maybe all

  146. of them. Uh and so Lord, would you bring

  147. healing in this place? But God, more

  148. than that, would you put steel in our

  149. spines for the fight that ensues? Uh

  150. Lord, we're believing that after today,

  151. we'll look even just a little bit more

  152. like you. Lord, we love you. We praise

  153. you. We ask these things in Jesus name.

  154. Amen.

  155. Well, on June the 6th, 1944, it was a

  156. day that would later on effectively

  157. become known as D-Day. And we see that

  158. it was the day that Allied forces during

  159. World War II would invade Normandy. Uh

  160. that Allied forces would land on and

  161. storm the beaches of Normandy and would

  162. win a decisive victory that would be a

  163. shadow of a doubt determine the outcome

  164. of World War II. But it wasn't without

  165. brutality and casualties. In fact,

  166. somewhere between 8,500 and 13,500 total

  167. troops ended up perishing. 4,400 of

  168. which were Allied soldiers, 2,5001

  169. of which were US troops. And we see that

  170. they won this victory that would

  171. determine the outcome of the war because

  172. we were able to get a foothold in

  173. France, which meant the inevitable

  174. defeat of Nazi Germany. But you know

  175. what's fascinating is that after

  176. securing that victory on June the 6th,

  177. 1944, it was not then declared on June

  178. the 7th that there was no longer any

  179. fighting that was going to have to

  180. happen in association with the war that

  181. had been won. Uh it's actually

  182. interesting. There had been a

  183. fundamental change in the outcome of the

  184. war. Uh but at the same time, the

  185. fighting wasn't declared as done on June

  186. the 7th. Wasn't declared done in June.

  187. Wasn't declared done that summer. It

  188. would continue on for well over a year.

  189. that troops did not pack up and go home.

  190. But for well over a year there would be

  191. the clearing out of this Nazi regime.

  192. That we see that while victory was

  193. inevitable, total liberation wasn't

  194. immediate. That the war had been won,

  195. but there were still battles that needed

  196. to be fought. That the soldiers didn't

  197. pack up and go home. They stayed there.

  198. They knew that fighting was required for

  199. the liberating of certain individuals in

  200. different towns all throughout Europe in

  201. places like Belgium and France, Germany

  202. itself and the Netherlands that there

  203. were enemy strongholds that needed to be

  204. eliminated. Ultimate victory had been

  205. secured and yet at the same time there

  206. was enemy territory that was occupied

  207. that still needed to be eliminated and

  208. liberated. And I say that to you today

  209. because that's the Christian life.

  210. That's the Christian life. Allied

  211. soldiers secure the victory with D-Day.

  212. But there's a mop-up operation that

  213. would continue after that. And can I

  214. tell anyone that's in here today that's

  215. going, "Man, I just feel so defeated."

  216. You are not fighting for victory. You're

  217. fighting from victory in Christ Jesus.

  218. But that doesn't mean you won't face

  219. resistance. Uh for some of us, the

  220. greatest frustration for us is that you

  221. come into this place and you just feel

  222. like maybe if I show up here enough, one

  223. day Jesus is just going to sprinkle

  224. Jesus dust on all of my struggles and I

  225. will float out of here. And you're

  226. going, "What is going on? Why can't this

  227. just be over for me? I'm still battling

  228. all of these sins in my life that just

  229. feel like they've got some strongholds."

  230. And the thing that you need to

  231. understand is that for the believer in

  232. Jesus, D-Day is essentially the day that

  233. Jesus Christ stepped out of the tomb

  234. over sin and over death. The war has

  235. been won, but there's still a mop-up

  236. operation in the life of the believer

  237. that we see that we still have some

  238. occupied territory in our lives where we

  239. can fight from victory knowing that

  240. those besetting sins in our life that we

  241. struggle so much with, we are not

  242. powerless to them. But because of the

  243. spirit of God who now resides on the

  244. inside of us, we're not slaves to them

  245. and we can fight them. And so some of

  246. us, you just need to suit up again. You

  247. just need to suit up again. Uh it's

  248. amazing. Uh if you recall whenever we

  249. entered into Colossians which again

  250. feels kind of like eons ago uh we

  251. entered into Colossians and I tried to

  252. be upfront with the fact that uh we see

  253. a clear pattern and presentation in

  254. Colossians, right? We see that there is

  255. in the first two chapters a lot of

  256. doctrinal and theological language

  257. that's going to be listed out. Uh and

  258. then we saw that in chapters 3 and four

  259. there was going to be a lot of practical

  260. and reassuring language. And it was

  261. essential that we didn't just move

  262. through chapters 1 and two as quick as

  263. humanly possible, but rather we needed

  264. to make sure that we had that

  265. theological foundation, a doctrinal

  266. foundation, particularly around who

  267. Jesus is and the christoologgical

  268. realities of him laid out for us in

  269. scripture that we then as believers

  270. could go, okay, how do we build upon

  271. this theological foundation that we have

  272. primarily that we've discussed in

  273. Christ? What are the practical

  274. applications and implications of

  275. building on him? And can I tell you,

  276. we've gone through chapters 1 and two,

  277. and it's been pivotal for us because you

  278. have to start with a theological

  279. foundation. If you start with practical

  280. application and just kind of tips and

  281. tricks, then you're going to think that

  282. in and of your own strength, you can

  283. make a way for yourself that you cannot.

  284. We started with a theological foundation

  285. as to who Jesus is. And just by way of a

  286. brief review, if you recall, we talked

  287. about the fact that Jesus Christ is the

  288. creator and sustainer of the universe.

  289. More so than that, we see that he's also

  290. the redeemer of all broken things as a

  291. result of sin entering the world. That

  292. he's the one that would take that

  293. certificate of debt that was levied

  294. against you and would be able to say,

  295. "Hey, I'm erasing everything that's on

  296. that certificate of debt and its

  297. obligations." How? By the cross, by his

  298. own blood, he would mark out, erase

  299. everything that was on that certificate

  300. of debt. And furthermore, he would

  301. triumph after seizing all weapons from

  302. the enemy. And it's important for us to

  303. understand that we have clearly laid out

  304. here that Jesus Christ is Lord. But we

  305. have to start with that theological

  306. foundation because the truth of the

  307. matter is there are a lot of us that we

  308. will sing and we will say Jesus Christ

  309. is King and Jesus Christ is Lord, but we

  310. treat him like a consultant and a life

  311. coach more than King and Lord. Uh that

  312. for many of us, we're like, "Hey, I I'm

  313. down with Jesus giving me spiritual

  314. advice. I'm even down with a little bit

  315. of guidance. I could use it." But the

  316. second that there's something that Jesus

  317. says that we disagree with, we will do

  318. whatever theological or mental

  319. gymnastics that are necessary in order

  320. to kind of work around that and fit

  321. Jesus into our own image rather than

  322. being conformed into his. We all of a

  323. sudden say, "I want to make you fit my

  324. own personal preferences." But the issue

  325. with that is that we've acknowledged him

  326. as Lord. And there are way too many

  327. Christians that are praying an oxymoron.

  328. And that oxymoron goes like this. No

  329. Lord.

  330. No Lord. No Lord is an oxymoron.

  331. If he's Lord of your life, he gets to

  332. define your life. You don't get to

  333. redefine your life based upon what you

  334. wish he said. He's Lord of your life.

  335. And we do what he said. But we do it all

  336. the time. We'll say, "Lord, I want you

  337. to be forgiving toward me, but you don't

  338. get to tell me what I do with my

  339. finances. I want you to be loving

  340. towards me, but I don't want to have to

  341. be loving towards my enemies. I want you

  342. to say that my sins are forgiven, but I

  343. don't think you should have a say in my

  344. sex life. No Lord is an oxymoron.

  345. To quote a good pastoral friend of mine

  346. in Dallas, uh, who I would

  347. affectionately refer to as Papa

  348. Chandler, he would say it like this.

  349. Jesus is not the top priority on your

  350. list of priorities. He's the piece of

  351. paper your priorities are written upon.

  352. He's so much more than what it is that

  353. we make him out to be. He's everything.

  354. He's our life. And so you see as you

  355. enter in to Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  356. beginning in verse one, it would say

  357. here, so if you've been raised with

  358. Christ, seek the things above where

  359. Christ is seated at the right hand of

  360. God. Uh now, it's interesting. Remember,

  361. as we enter into chapter 3, Paul has

  362. been confronting and exposing all of

  363. this deception and frustration that are

  364. being caused by all of these false

  365. teachers in the city of Colassi.

  366. Specifically, he's spent considerable

  367. time making sure that we are killing the

  368. idea that you can achieve some level of

  369. spiritual elitism by ritualism or

  370. legalism. He's been killing the idea

  371. that you can just experience more or

  372. that you can just end up performing

  373. better in order to earn better standing

  374. before God. And so, we see that after he

  375. does that here, he makes it clear that

  376. it's by Christ alone that we are even in

  377. a position to where we can come to God

  378. and say, "You are our father. we've been

  379. reconciled to you through the blood of

  380. your son. We see that he would make that

  381. clear to us that it's our Lord Jesus

  382. Christ who triumphed that we can come to

  383. the father through him. And now he says,

  384. "So if you've been raised, which if

  385. you're like me, you don't like the word

  386. if." You like can I just like what if is

  387. like half of what goes on right here.

  388. You know what I'm saying? We got any

  389. what if people that are in this place?

  390. If is the worst word ever. There's so

  391. many things on the other side of if. And

  392. I'm here to tell you most of them are

  393. bad in my mind. Uh I don't go if and

  394. then think good things. I go if and

  395. they're all bad. And so when I see So if

  396. you've been raised with Christ, there

  397. are probably some of you that overthink

  398. professionally that are going, "Have I

  399. been raised with Christ? Am I saved? I

  400. don't know. Is this good? I think I'm

  401. going to hell. I don't know what the

  402. deal is. I thought I've done it. Do I

  403. need to pray the prayer again? I saw

  404. Justin baptizing people. Do I need to

  405. get baptized? Does it matter who I get

  406. baptized by? Luke, can you baptize me?

  407. Can someone do something like actually

  408. Luke's a mess? Can can man baptize me?

  409. LIKE WE DO ALL THESE things

  410. and the if there's not supposed to make

  411. us doubting or questioning if you've

  412. been raised with Christ. He's saying

  413. more so in light of the fact that you've

  414. been raised with Christ because you've

  415. been raised with Christ. Now what? Now

  416. what what does that mean? What do we do

  417. from there? Uh Charles Spurgeon, who I

  418. think I've quoted more than anybody else

  419. from this pulpit, uh he he was born in

  420. 1834. or he died in 1892. He began

  421. preaching in 1851. So, you do the math

  422. there. Uh, but you see, Charles Spurgeon

  423. is called the prince of preachers for

  424. good reason. I mean, I oftentimes I will

  425. write a message and then I'll read

  426. whatever Spurgeon had to say about it

  427. and if there's something I'm off on, I

  428. know I'm wrong. He's definitely right.

  429. And what we see though is that with this

  430. particular passage, he would lay out

  431. just beautifully a metaphor that I think

  432. could help us in the way that we think

  433. about what it is that Paul is saying

  434. here. Um, and he would lay out the

  435. metaphor for for resurrection,

  436. co-resurrection with Christ here in the

  437. form of a seed. And he says this, the

  438. buried seed rises from the ground, but

  439. but not as a seed, for it puts forth a

  440. green leaf and bud and stem and

  441. gradually develops expanding flower and

  442. fruit. And even so, we wear new form,

  443. for we are renewed after the image of

  444. him that created us in righteousness and

  445. holiness. There was corruption in our

  446. mind and it was working irresistibly

  447. toward every evil and offensive thing.

  448. In many the corruption did not appear on

  449. the surface but it worked within. In

  450. others it was conspicuous and fearful to

  451. look upon. How great the change. For now

  452. the power of corruption within us is

  453. broken. Anybody grateful. And the new

  454. life has overcome it. For it is a living

  455. and incorruptible seed which liveth and

  456. abideth forever. That corruption is upon

  457. the old nature, but it cannot touch the

  458. new, which is our true and real self.

  459. If you've been because you've been

  460. raised with Christ, beautiful things are

  461. sprouting forth. Now, because you've

  462. been raised with Christ, we have been

  463. made alive in him. We were not just bad.

  464. We were dead in our sin, but we've ma

  465. been made alive in Jesus Christ. How? We

  466. see that Paul would say, "It's not by

  467. striving. It's not by anything that

  468. you've done, but it's by grace alone

  469. through faith alone on the foundation of

  470. the finished work of Jesus Christ alone

  471. that you have been saved. That you were

  472. outside of the house and you've been

  473. brought into the family of God. That you

  474. were standing in opposition to God as a

  475. result of your own sin. But through the

  476. finished work of Jesus, we've

  477. experienced adoption into God's family.

  478. And so, we as a people can come together

  479. and go, there was an old nature that I

  480. had on, but now I'm a new creation.

  481. those old clothes don't fit anymore,

  482. that I'm walking in the new. And so he

  483. says, "So if you've been raised with

  484. Christ, seek the things above where

  485. Christ is seated at the right hand of

  486. God. Set your minds on things above, not

  487. on earthly things." So you see that Paul

  488. kind of doubles down here. He says, uh,

  489. so if you've been raised with Christ,

  490. seek things above. And then you see that

  491. he would say, "Set your mind on things

  492. above, not on earthly things." Uh so to

  493. kind of continue the metaphor of seed,

  494. if you think about it, we have a new

  495. positional foundation in Jesus Christ.

  496. And there are practical implications to

  497. what that will look like in our life

  498. that the positional foundation we

  499. experience is that we've been planted in

  500. the soil of the gospel. And the gospel's

  501. gotten into us. And so there are

  502. practical implications for what it looks

  503. like to be planted in the soil of the

  504. gospel. It matters where you're planted.

  505. Do we understand this? You cannot be

  506. planted in the world and expect to

  507. experience the same things if you're

  508. planted in the gospel. That we see

  509. actually you cannot bear heavenly fruit

  510. if you're planted in earthly soil.

  511. There's got to be a different change in

  512. where it is that you're planted. Paul

  513. says if because you've been raised with

  514. Christ, you're planted in that soil.

  515. You're planted in the soil of the

  516. gospel. Seek the things above. It's not

  517. like you're just saved and then it's

  518. like I can think about whatever I want.

  519. He said, "No, it it matters what you're

  520. doing with your minds. In fact, he would

  521. go on to say, "So, if you've been raised

  522. with Christ, seek the things above."

  523. Why? Because it's where Christ is

  524. seated. It's where he is at the right

  525. hand of God. We've submitted our lives

  526. to Jesus Christ. Yes, we acknowledge

  527. that he's ruling and reigning, that he

  528. is Lord. And so, we are not setting our

  529. minds on all of the things that are

  530. trending below, but the one who's

  531. reigning above. And I think we

  532. understand that the attention of our

  533. mind will determine the direction of our

  534. life. Another uh pastor friend uh who

  535. often will will preach on the attention

  536. of our minds would say it like this that

  537. what you think about you care about.

  538. What you care about you chase. That we

  539. move in the direction of our strongest

  540. thoughts often in our lives. And so we

  541. see here that Paul would say in verses

  542. 1-4 in total here. So if you've been

  543. raised with Christ, seek the things

  544. above where Christ is seated at the

  545. right hand of God. Set your mind on

  546. things above, not on earthly things. for

  547. you died and your life is hidden with

  548. Christ in God. When Christ who is your

  549. life appears, then you also will appear

  550. with him in glory. It says that you're

  551. hidden. Uh the idea is not necessarily

  552. concealed but secured. Uh that we've

  553. died and we're hidden in Christ, that

  554. we're eternally secure in him. And you

  555. see that there's this beautiful flow

  556. throughout the passage so far. Even in

  557. just the first four verses where you see

  558. that there's direction that we're given.

  559. Uh there's an identification for that

  560. journey and even a destination that's

  561. given transformation that's happening

  562. along the way. Do you notice that he

  563. says set your mind on things above? Be

  564. seeking those things because that's

  565. where Christ is seated. He he says

  566. you're seeking those things that you

  567. have direction from heaven while living

  568. your life on earth and you also have

  569. identification for that journey that

  570. you've died. you're hidden in Christ,

  571. that he is your very life. And it says,

  572. "And you'll appear with him in glory."

  573. That when all things are said and done,

  574. you know that you're not just becoming

  575. like him, you will be with him and like

  576. him. Uh and so we see here that we have

  577. to behold Christ, seek him. We see that

  578. we also belong to him. We're hidden in

  579. him. He's our life. And at the same

  580. time, we're becoming like him. That

  581. there's a transformation that's

  582. happening in the believer. That we're

  583. these seeds planted in the soil of the

  584. gospel. be beautiful things are are

  585. sprouting forth. And in that process, we

  586. see that it all culminates with us being

  587. with him. And so up until this point,

  588. Paul has made a really strong case for

  589. Jesus not being another guy, but for

  590. being God. And what does he say? He says

  591. Jesus Christ is the creator and

  592. sustainer of the universe. That he is

  593. sufficiency and supremacy. That he's

  594. ruling and he's reigning. It says that

  595. he is our rescuer and our redeemer. And

  596. after going through all of these

  597. indicatives as to who Jesus is, now we

  598. see that he'll move to the imperatives

  599. of what must we do with what it is that

  600. is true. Does that make sense? All

  601. right, Dr. Seuss, move on. Uh, and look

  602. at what it says here

  603. in verse 5 through 7 again. Uh, we see

  604. that Paul is going to lay out a list of

  605. vices. Uh, but what's interesting is

  606. that in these two lists, um, he'll he'll

  607. swap how he moves through things. We see

  608. that on this first list of vices, he'll

  609. move from external action to internal

  610. motivation. And then when we swap that

  611. list of vices, he'll end up moving from

  612. internal motivation to external action.

  613. And so he's saying, hey, this is this is

  614. a battle that you might have to fight on

  615. multiple fronts. Okay? And so you see

  616. that he would list out what those things

  617. are here for us when he says,

  618. "Therefore, put to death what belongs to

  619. your earthly nature."

  620. sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil

  621. desire, and greed, which is idolatry.

  622. Because of these, God's wrath is coming

  623. upon the disobedient.

  624. And you once walked in these things when

  625. you were living in them.

  626. It's interesting. Um, from 1990 to 2003,

  627. the most popular show in Las Vegas was

  628. um, Sig Freed and Roy. Anybody familiar

  629. with Sig Freeden Roy? Any of you guys

  630. big big frequenters in here?

  631. like you know so there will be an alter

  632. call you're good like um so so it it's

  633. interesting

  634. between that time from 1990 to 2003 Sig

  635. Freed and Roy was the most popular show

  636. in Las Vegas and to put it in a sentence

  637. the show was popular because Sig Freed

  638. Fishbacher and Roy Horn had somehow

  639. created a show where they were telling

  640. apex predators what to do uh so they had

  641. lions and tigers and bears oh my that

  642. they would get into a cage with and they

  643. would tell them to do stuff that you

  644. would tell your puppy to do. So they'd

  645. be like, "Fetch." And that Bengal tiger

  646. would go fetching something. They would

  647. say, "Jump through this flaming hoop."

  648. And at the snap of a finger, it would

  649. happen. And people were mind blown by

  650. how they could make this happen. Why is

  651. it that these fierce predators would end

  652. up obeying them? And they did until they

  653. didn't.

  654. In October of 2003, Roy Horn was in the

  655. midst of a show performing like usual

  656. with a white tiger that he was very

  657. familiar with. And while he was doing

  658. what he always did, telling an apex

  659. predator what to do, the apex predator

  660. decided that he didn't feel like being

  661. told what to do. And he lunged at Roy

  662. Horn. He grabbed him with his jaws by

  663. the back of Royy's neck. And Roy found

  664. out the hard way that punching a Bengal

  665. tiger isn't really effective. It dragged

  666. him off of the stage, much to the horror

  667. of everybody that was a part of that

  668. show. And somehow miraculously, the

  669. trainer was able to help set Roy free.

  670. He was rushed to the hospital,

  671. miraculously escaped with his life, but

  672. in the process he would be paralyzed for

  673. the rest of his life, and his career was

  674. effectively over. And I got to tell you,

  675. it it was amazing listening to

  676. interviews from people that were a part

  677. of the show and listening to what they

  678. had to say about what they thought had

  679. happened and what's kind of running

  680. through their mind in the aftermath. And

  681. I want to read some of them to you just

  682. so that I can see kind of where we all

  683. land on this. Uh, one of the individuals

  684. interviewed said, "We are just stunned.

  685. There's no explanation for it. The tiger

  686. must have been playing. He definitely

  687. wasn't attacking."

  688. When asked why they thought the tiger

  689. wasn't attacking after the attack,

  690. he said, "Because he's close with the

  691. tiger."

  692. Okay.

  693. Another said, "We don't understand.

  694. The tiger was acting outside of his

  695. character."

  696. when asked why they would say that, he

  697. said,

  698. "He's usually quite under control."

  699. And um

  700. you know, at this point, like my jaw is

  701. on the floor

  702. cuz I've never heard dumber statements

  703. in my life.

  704. And I feel comfortable saying that

  705. before you. That's the dumbest thing

  706. I've ever heard in my life.

  707. You think the tiger, you know, do you

  708. guys know what a tiger is? You you think

  709. that a tiger

  710. was acting outside of its character,

  711. misbehaving?

  712. Like, are we talk like like strong, fast

  713. claws, fangs, built-in camouflage

  714. designed to end life with ease? You

  715. think that it was out of character that

  716. that tiger just one day was like, "I'm

  717. kind of sick of this tiny little guy

  718. telling me what to do.

  719. I I must be missing something.

  720. And here's the issue. And and by the

  721. way, there there are several. Uh but

  722. issue number one, getting into the ring

  723. with a full-grown tiger. Bad idea. Issue

  724. number two, feeling comfortable with a

  725. tiger. But the issue that prevails above

  726. them all is that you thought you could

  727. control a tiger.

  728. And there are some of you that are in

  729. here and you are raising pet sins that

  730. you think you can control and it will

  731. eat you alive if you don't shoot it

  732. today.

  733. And there's a popular phrase that the

  734. Puritans made really known at one point

  735. that I think needs to make its way back

  736. into our church and it's mortification.

  737. The putting to death of sin. Put it to

  738. death. I think there are a lot of us

  739. right now that are raising these little

  740. kittens that we think are not that big

  741. of a deal. That we think it's just kind

  742. of fine. We think that we have it under

  743. control, but one day that kitten's going

  744. to be full grown and when it's a tiger,

  745. it will kill you. And you think that

  746. it's unthreatening right now, but it

  747. will be the eventual undoing of you if

  748. you do not put it to death. But what we

  749. start doing is we start rationalizing,

  750. redefining, repressing sin. We make it

  751. something else even though we know we

  752. should be putting it to death. And so

  753. you end up rationalizing your sin and

  754. going, "I'm not lying. I'm just not

  755. telling the whole truth." Uh you end up

  756. finding yourself in a place where you're

  757. redefining it. I'm not gossiping. I'm

  758. just I'm venting. You start repressing

  759. it. I know that uh the the two become

  760. one flesh and and I really shouldn't

  761. have anything that's off limits to my

  762. spouse, but I just feel like it's kind

  763. of weird to not have some privacy,

  764. right? Like they shouldn't have access

  765. to all the things on my phone. At least

  766. let me delete some things before you

  767. take a look at it. Uh like we start to

  768. try to make sense of all of these

  769. things, but we're not called to manage

  770. our sin, make excuses for our sin, but

  771. for the mortification of our sin to put

  772. it to death. And so Paul says, "Kill it.

  773. Kill it. don't care what you think about

  774. the analogy of kittens being killed.

  775. Kill it. He says, "Take it serious

  776. because the second you don't take it

  777. serious, you're going to really wish

  778. that that thing wasn't alive when your

  779. head's in the back of its mouth."

  780. And so he talks about this list and it

  781. goes from external action to internal

  782. motivation. And he says, "Put to death

  783. what?" Sexual immorality.

  784. Sexual immorality comes from the Greek

  785. word porna. It's where we get our word

  786. pornography. It means sexual excess and

  787. indulgence. Uh and really there's a

  788. broad uh amount of things that would fit

  789. underneath that. It's a broad umbrella

  790. that sexual immorality ends up

  791. encompassing. Uh in fact, it would

  792. include anything any sexual activity or

  793. relationship that is outside of the one

  794. that God designed for your flourishing.

  795. So that would include things like

  796. adultery, incest, homosexuality,

  797. prostitution, premarital sex, anything

  798. that is outside of God's design for sex.

  799. And by the way, just so we're clear,

  800. God's design for sex is one man, one

  801. woman within the context and the

  802. covenant of marriage. And I think it's

  803. important, especially uh and let me just

  804. say, I think it's important this month

  805. to say something about that. I I think

  806. often times

  807. [applause]

  808. I think often times

  809. first off we don't understand the

  810. scriptures

  811. but you see a lot of people will be like

  812. well Jesus didn't say anything about sex

  813. that's weird that you would say that um

  814. because in Matthew 19:4-6

    Matthew 19:4–6

  815. Jesus said haven't you heard that he who

  816. created them in the beginning made the

  817. male and female. Then he also said, "For

  818. this reason, a man will leave his father

  819. and mother and be joined to his wife,

  820. and the two will become one flesh." So

  821. they're no longer two, but one flesh.

  822. Therefore, what God has joined together,

  823. let no one separate. That feels pretty

  824. clear to me. God's super pro- sex. Stop

  825. emailing me about Song of Songs. We

  826. can't do it again. Like, like I'm I'm

  827. serious, y'all. Stop. Seriously, driving

  828. me crazy. And

  829. >> yeah, see you in February. We're He's

  830. anti the distortion of sex. Super pro

  831. sex. Anti the distortion of it. Now, now

  832. let me say something is I I realized we

  833. clap and and like listen, anything

  834. that's being talked about around the

  835. water cooler, I'm going to talk about

  836. it. Um but but I think we also need to

  837. understand there's something about

  838. sexual sin, man, it it gets in your

  839. bones.

  840. And I just want to say for any of you

  841. that feel like, man, I I I'm I'm on that

  842. list of things that you just said. I I

  843. don't know that God can do anything with

  844. me. That's not the gospel. That's not

  845. the gospel. Any of you that feel like,

  846. hey, well, I'm struggling in one of

  847. those or other sexual sins that you

  848. didn't list. If you feel like God can't

  849. redeem you, you don't hear the gospel

  850. clearly. Listen to me. One of the

  851. earliest church fathers, Augustine, who

  852. is one of the most influential church

  853. fathers, uh he was a sex addict. And and

  854. it's very widely known that Augustine

  855. was a sex addict. And there's a story

  856. that he would tell where he wandered

  857. into one of the towns that he had once

  858. been in where he had frequented the

  859. company of women. I'll say it like that.

  860. Uh and as he did, one of the women that

  861. he had been with at one point came up to

  862. him and whispered into his ear,

  863. "Augustine, it is I." And he looked back

  864. at her and he said, "Yes, ma'am, but it

  865. is not I, for I am a new creation." And

  866. so for many of you, you just need to

  867. know that the Lord is not beyond

  868. redeeming you.

  869. If he could do it for me, he can do it

  870. for you. promise you. Promise you. But

  871. Paul does continue. He says sexual

  872. immorality and he keeps working

  873. backwards into the heart and he says

  874. impurity which here that word just means

  875. dirtiness or filthiness in the context

  876. here obviously of sexual activity. It's

  877. interesting that word for impurity would

  878. often be used uh in Greek medical

  879. literature to talk about infected

  880. wounds. So if immorality is the action

  881. that then impurity is really uh the

  882. environment or the atmosphere in which

  883. that happens. He he continues on and he

  884. moves from sexual immorality to impurity

  885. to then lusting and evil desire. This

  886. hitting home for anyone? Uh he moves

  887. into lusting, which I know nobody in

  888. here does, but hypothetically speaking

  889. for your friends that go to other

  890. churches, this is what it means.

  891. There's often something that is

  892. observable externally that awakens evil

  893. desire internally.

  894. Um, guys, let me say it like this and

  895. then ladies, don't worry. I got

  896. something for you, too. Um,

  897. guys, it's it's that thing in you

  898. where you got excited when you opened up

  899. a new show on Netflix and you saw in

  900. that top left corner why it's rated R

  901. and nudity was one of the things it's

  902. listed for

  903. and you were looking forward to the

  904. nudity in that show. Uh, let me let me

  905. just put my hands in the air. Uh my wife

  906. and I were watching a show a couple of

  907. months ago and it was totally fine and

  908. then all of a sudden it was just like

  909. all of this unnecessary nudity and I was

  910. like Lindsay why did you insist on us

  911. watching this? And um

  912. no that didn't happen.

  913. This is what you wanted. Uh

  914. but actually she would she would

  915. actually promise you you can go talk to

  916. her after except at this point. Can I

  917. stay at someone's house tonight? Does

  918. anyone like God? Um um

  919. I I actually I actually said to her,

  920. "Hey, I um I don't I don't want to watch

  921. this anymore. It's It's just It's not

  922. good for me. I don't need that. I don't

  923. need that." Uh and and I think ladies, I

  924. know you're all like, "Men are pigs. Can

  925. I get a witness?" Um

  926. let's talk about the books you read. Oh.

  927. Oh.

  928. Oh, he knows.

  929. See, cuz what you like is it it doesn't

  930. feel as bad cuz it's not visual, but it

  931. paints the same images. It's it's just

  932. pornography in book form.

  933. And you love reading about these things

  934. that your loser husband doesn't do. And

  935. why isn't he look chiseled? And like,

  936. you know, why isn't he 6'8 and look like

  937. an angel? And like, you know, all these

  938. all this stuff.

  939. All of it

  940. awakens evil desires which is just what

  941. are those proclivities that you have?

  942. Those things that get awakened in you.

  943. Do you know what you can tolerate and

  944. not tolerate?

  945. Do you know the snares that so easily

  946. bring you into sin? Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  947. would say, "What is that for you?" And

  948. so it's interesting Paul would continue

  949. and he would say greed.

  950. sexual immorality and then greed.

  951. But if you think about it,

  952. what insight

  953. greed is? I want more of what's

  954. forbidden from me and I could not care

  955. less what it means for you.

  956. I want for me, even if it's at your

  957. expense, I want whatever I want,

  958. whenever I want, however I want,

  959. and I want it right now.

  960. And by the way, that that can be

  961. something that happens with sex

  962. certainly, but it can also happen with

  963. money and success. It can happen with

  964. how you handle social media. It can hand

  965. it can be in a lot of different things.

  966. But greed is idolatry. It is the proof

  967. that you can have extreme devotion to

  968. something and it's dividing you in the

  969. Lord rather than you having devotion to

  970. the Lord himself. And so Paul would say

  971. because of these God's wrath is coming

  972. upon the disobedient. And you once

  973. walked in these things when you were

  974. living in them. I love that. Paul's

  975. like, "Oh, did you think did you think

  976. you weren't in the first list? Let me

  977. let me just clarify for you. You once

  978. walked in these things when you were

  979. living in them." And it says that God's

  980. wrath is coming upon the disobedient. Uh

  981. wrath there, the word means that there's

  982. something swelling and breaking with

  983. God. It's talking about settled

  984. indignation,

  985. controlled passion, you could call it.

  986. Uh and I think what we see here is that

  987. uh we see that God and and wrath are

  988. being discussed, and we don't like that.

  989. God, God should just love me. Can I tell

  990. you, God's wrath is as much a part of

  991. God's character as God's love is. You

  992. cannot have adequate love without wrath.

  993. I'll tell you,

  994. it would be a bad idea if someone tried

  995. to harm my wife.

  996. It would be bizarre if I was just like,

  997. I just don't want to hurt him. I I I

  998. just want him I I just want him to know

  999. that I love him, so I'm going to let him

1000. abuse my wife. Like, what are we talking

1001. about? you will die tonight. Do you know

1002. the Lord? You're about to go meet him.

  1003. Like,

1004. uh, the problem is we just don't like

1005. that God gets to define where wrath

1006. goes. We want to define it. Now,

1007. we all have wrath and we all think wrath

1008. is just in certain scenarios. Promise

1009. you, we have wrath towards the

1010. individuals that are sexually abusing

  1011. children, do we not?

1012. >> Yeah. You shouldn't be okay with that.

1013. We have wrath towards racism. You should

1014. not be okay with that. We have wrath

1015. towards things that are objectively evil

  1016. things.

1017. And God's wrath is coming upon those

1018. that are walking in sin, not repentant

1019. of it, and don't care.

1020. And so you see that he would list a

1021. second vice list. So again, if this is

1022. your list, go for it.

  1023. But now

1024. put away all the following: anger,

1025. wrath, malice, slander, and filthy

1026. language from your mouth. Don't lie to

1027. one another since you've put off the old

1028. self with its practices and have put on

1029. the new self. You're being renewed in

1030. knowledge according to the image of your

1031. creator. In Jesus Christ, there is not

1032. Greek and Jew, circumcision, and

  1033. uncircumcision, barbarian, cyian, slave,

1034. and free. But Christ is all in all. He

1035. moves from internal motivation to

1036. external action. And he says, anger, put

1037. away all anger. Anger is a basic human

1038. emotion. There's nothing inherently uh

1039. sinful about anger itself, but it can

1040. easily become that way. Anybody, anybody

1041. know what I'm talking about? Thank you.

1042. Um I love the way that one theologian

1043. said it. He said, "Anger is the wind

1044. that blows out the lamp of the mind

1045. and it leads you to what?" Wrath, but

1046. not like God's wrath. The word there's

1047. thumos. It's the idea of a thermometer

1048. that continues to rise in temperature

1049. and then it becomes rage,

1050. which becomes malice. That now I've got

1051. some brokenness in me that I'm indulging

1052. and I want to do you harm. And how do we

1053. do harm to one another? Slander. I I'll

1054. vilify you. I'll blaspheme your name.

1055. It says in filthy language, which isn't

1056. just whatever would immediately come to

1057. our mind. It's actually a broader term

1058. than that. It's anything that would be

  1059. destructive rather than constructive.

  1060. Doesn't mean that you can't be

1061. corrective towards someone, but are you

1062. doing it so that you can build someone

1063. up or are you just constantly with your

1064. words breaking people down? And so we

1065. see here that he would continue and he

1066. he would say we're being renewed

1067. in the creator's image that Christ is

1068. all and in all. There's a continual

1069. renewal and putting on of the new self.

1070. Your old clothes don't fit. Thank God.

  1071. Are kings compassionate overcritical?

1072. And so are we that way? So there's no

  1073. longer

  1074. Greek and Jews, circumcision,

  1075. uncircumcision, barbarian, cyian, slave,

1076. free Christ is all in all. I don't have

1077. time to get into all of those different

1078. things, but it's amazing here. Greeks

1079. and Jews didn't necessarily get along.

1080. The Greeks were like significantly more

1081. educated in their minds and better. But

1082. the Jews had a covenant with God. And so

1083. there was division there. Greeks also

1084. were the ideal gentile uh in their own

1085. minds. They were the ones that were

1086. sophisticated and educated and so they

1087. didn't like barbarians and cythians.

1088. Barbarians uh were called barbarians

1089. because they didn't speak Greek and

1090. Greeks were like, "If you don't speak

1091. Greek, then all you sound like is bar."

1092. And so they called them barbarians,

1093. which it's funny to be like, "We're

  1094. really sophisticated bar. You're a

  1095. barbarian." Um

1096. Cytheians were these nomadic tribes of

1097. people that were seen as savages. Paul

1098. says, "Away with the divisions.

1099. Christ is all and in all."

1100. Uh, let me say this. Um, I'm overtime

1101. and I always am. And so, um,

1102. it's a lot. Um, Christ victory and

1103. you've still got vices. What do I do

1104. with that? Uh, tell just a brief story.

1105. Uh, Lindsay and I were in Miami this

1106. week. Uh, and we were staying at this

1107. hotel and as you went across the street,

1108. there's this really great bagel spot in

1109. Miami called El Bagel. And so, uh, we

1110. would go to this spot that was right

1111. across from our hotel, go and get

1112. coffee, uh, pretty much every morning

1113. and do that. Uh, one morning there was

  1114. like this sewage truck

1115. and I mean it smelled horrific right

1116. next to the bagel spot. I was like like

1117. this is nasty. But that was just like

1118. the first morning and I was like I

1119. literally am walking out the next

1120. morning and I was like, "Thank God that

1121. sewage truck is not going to be here

1122. this morning." Walk out. There it is.

1123. And I I walked to go get coffee first

1124. instead of uh walking to the bagel spot

1125. first. So I saw the back of this truck.

1126. And my literal thought was, who in the

1127. world would want to do this job? Clean

  1128. up sewage. It's disgusting.

1129. Get my coffee. I'm headed to El Bagel. I

1130. kid you not. I took a picture of it and

1131. I forgot to put it up here. Uh but I kid

1132. you not. I walk back and on the front of

1133. this truck it says familyowned and

1134. operated. John 3:16, Jesus saves. And I

    John 3:16

  1135. thought,

1136. who wants to clean up your sewage?

  1137. The Lord Jesus Christ

1138. >> will take all of it upon himself. He's

1139. given you ultimate victory and the war

1140. has been won. But can I also tell you,

1141. it's not just that the war has been won,

1142. but there are battles that you have to

1143. continue. But you're not doing it for

1144. victory. You're doing it from victory.

1145. And the Lord will put steel in your

1146. spine for the battles that you have to

1147. continue to fight if you would let him.

1148. And often times, like Paul said earlier

1149. in Colossians, it takes a community. And

1150. so I want to pray for you. If you're

  1151. like, I haven't even won D-Day. I don't

1152. have a relationship with the Lord Jesus.

1153. God's wrath is coming upon me. I want to

1154. pray that you would receive the Lord for

1155. the first time. if you've never made

1156. that decision. But for the rest of us,

1157. we're going to open up the altar even as

1158. I pray and as we get into worship and

1159. let us as a community come beside you

1160. and strengthen you and say, "Hey, the

1161. battle is hard, but you're not fighting

1162. alone. Christ has won the war and we're

1163. right beside you." And so Lord, would

1164. you just right now um

  1165. um

  1166. speak to the heart

  1167. of the person that

1168. does not know you, but they're going,

1169. "Man, I don't want to be in these fights

1170. alone. I'm tired of all of these things

1171. that have even been listed that I've

1172. gone to as a vice that I thought was

1173. going to bring some kind of

  1174. peace.

1175. And if you're in here and you've never

1176. put your faith in Jesus and you're

1177. going, I want to eternally be with him.

  1178. I need this family.

1179. I'm getting whooped up and down in this

1180. life and I need a rescuer and a savior.

1181. Would you just pray with me and say,

  1182. "Father, I'm a sinner in need of a

1183. savior. I believe that Jesus Christ came

1184. to this earth and lived a perfect

1185. sinless life. that he willingly went to

1186. the cross and shed perfect innocent

1187. blood that not only covers my sins, it

1188. takes my sins away, past, present, and

1189. future. Believe that Jesus Christ was

1190. buried in a tomb for three days and he

1191. rose to life again. And because Jesus

1192. Christ has risen and ascended and is

1193. seated at the right hand of God, I can

1194. have life in his name. Romans would say

1195. that if you believe in your heart and

1196. confess with your mouth that Jesus

1197. Christ is Lord, you will be saved. And

1198. praise God if that's your story today.

1199. Old nature gone, new creation.

1200. Lord, for the rest of us that feel like,

1201. man, I'm just these besetting sins feel

1202. like I'm losing the battle constantly.

1203. Lord, would you be with us? Would we

1204. meet with one another down front? It's

  1205. not embarrassing. It's not

  1206. It's powerful.

1207. Say, Lord, we need one another as we're

1208. fighting the good fight. We're running

  1209. our race.

1210. Lord, thank you for the cross that we

1211. might be a people that can say we're not

1212. fighting for victory, but from it. Lord,

1213. would you do a work in here that only

1214. you can do in Jesus name. Amen.
