  1. 2 verse 10.

  2. 1 Peter 1, 3, 3.

  3. Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth,

  4. for a sincere brotherly love,

  5. love one another earnestly and with pure heart,

  6. since you have been born again,

  7. not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,

  8. through the living and mighty word of God.

  9. For all flesh is like grass,

  10. and all its glory like the flower of grass.

  11. The grass withers, and the flower falls,

  12. but the word of the Lord remains forever.

  13. And this word is the good news that is preached to you.

  14. So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all surrender.

  15. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk,

  16. that by it you may grow up into salvation,

  17. if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

  18. As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men,

  19. but in the sight of God, chosen and precious,

  20. view yourselves like living stones,

  21. being built up as a spiritual house,

  22. to be a holy priesthood,

  23. to offer spiritual sacrifices,

  24. acceptable to God and Jesus Christ.

  25. For it stands in Scripture,

  26. behold,

  27. I am laying in Zion a stone,

  28. a cornerstone,

  29. chosen and precious.

  30. Whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.

  31. So the honor is for you who believe,

  32. but for those who do not believe,

  33. the stone that the builders rejected

  34. has the wrongly chief cornerstone,

  35. and a stone of stumbling,

  36. and a rock of offense.

  37. They stumble because they disobey the word,

  38. as they were asked him to do.

  39. But you are a chosen race,

  40. a royal priesthood,

  41. a holy nation,

  42. a people for his own possession,

  43. that you may proclaim the excellencies of him

  44. who called you out of darkness

  45. into his marvelous light.

  46. Once you were not a people,

  47. but now you are God's people.

  48. Once you had not received mercy,

  49. but now you have received mercy.

  50. The word of the Lord.

  51. Thanks be to God.

  52. So please follow along with me.

  53. I hope you found your place in the Bible

  54. in 1 Peter 1-2,

  55. starting in verse 22 of chapter 1.

  56. So Peter just talked about what it means,

  57. what it looks like to be in right relationship with God,

  58. and now in this passage,

  59. he addresses what it looks like

  60. to be in right relationship with one another

  61. in the church,

  62. and also with relation to the world.

  63. And as I was preparing this message

  64. and meditating on 1 Peter 1-2,

  65. I was reminded of what I read

  66. in a book entitled

  67. The Rise of Christianity,

  68. which is a historical,

  69. kind of sociological book

  70. written by Rodney Stark,

  71. who's a sociologist in Baylor University.

  72. And he recounts the meteoric rise

  73. of early Christianity,

  74. how it went from being a fringe religion

  75. among Jews

  76. to becoming the majority religion

  77. of the Roman Empire,

  78. the most powerful empire in the world at the time,

  79. in just a few centuries.

  80. It's not longer than the time

  81. the United States has been in existence.

  82. And he attributes this to two major factors.

  83. And the first is that

  84. while birth control, abortion,

  85. and infanticide,

  86. especially of female babies,

  87. were rampant throughout the Roman Empire,

  88. the Christians refused to follow these practices.

  89. For that reason,

  90. because they kept their female babies

  91. and they didn't have abortions,

  92. they had a much more balanced gender distribution,

  93. which allowed them to reproduce

  94. at a much higher rate

  95. than the rest of the population.

  96. So that's one thing,

  97. is that the Christians were growing

  98. because of their treatment of babies.

  99. And second,

  100. he attributes this to

  101. the way Christians behaved

  102. and lived

  103. in the midst of the two epidemics,

  104. plagues of 165 AD

  105. and 251 AD.

  106. These plagues were so widespread,

  107. they wiped out a third

  108. of the entire Roman Empire

  109. each time.

  110. So each time this plague happened.

  111. And so that's millions,

  112. several millions of people

  113. each time dying.

  114. And at that time,

  115. understandably so in some ways,

  116. many people

  117. in the Roman Empire

  118. abandoned the cities

  119. and left their friends and families

  120. to spare themselves,

  121. to preserve themselves

  122. instead of being contaminated.

  123. But during that time,

  124. Christians stayed in the cities

  125. and they cared for the sick.

  126. And the result of that,

  127. the reason was because

  128. they had a tighter social bond

  129. with one another

  130. than the rest of the Roman population.

  131. And the result was

  132. that the Christians

  133. had a smaller casualty rate

  134. than the rest of the Roman Empire

  135. when these plagues hit.

  136. So those are kind of

  137. the non-spiritual,

  138. kind of sociological reasons

  139. why this sociologist says

  140. the church grew.

  141. But as you think about that,

  142. we see that there's a very simple

  143. biblical explanation

  144. for all of this as well.

  145. And you see this in John 13, 35

  146. where Jesus tells his disciples,

  147. By this,

  148. all people will know

  149. that you are my disciples

  150. if you have love for one another.

  151. Really,

  152. what the Christians were doing

  153. was nothing creative

  154. or different.

  155. It was radical,

  156. but it was simply

  157. loving one another

  158. better than everybody else

  159. in the Roman Empire.

  160. They loved the little ones

  161. in their midst.

  162. They loved the sick ones

  163. in their midst.

  164. And as they did so,

  165. they made Christianity

  166. look extremely attractive

  167. to the Washington world.

  168. And what accounts

  169. for how the early Christians

  170. loved one another this way?

  171. And this passage

  172. in 1 Peter,

    1 Peter 1:22

  173. chapter 1, verse 22,

  174. chapter 2, verse 10,

  175. gives us a glimpse

  176. into what truth

  177. creates this kind of community.

  178. And he tells us

  179. the main idea here

  180. is that the household of God,

  181. the family of God,

  182. the household of God

  183. should love one another

  184. because they have been born

  185. of the living word

  186. through nursing

  187. with the life-giving milk

  188. and for rearing

  189. on the living stone.

  190. So,

  191. three things.

  192. So first is

  193. the reason

  194. why we should love one another.

  195. Second is

  196. the means

  197. by which we love one another.

  198. And the last

  199. is the goal

  200. of loving one another.

  201. And the reason

  202. is that we have been born

  203. of the living word.

  204. And the means

  205. is the nursing

  206. with the life-giving milk.

  207. And the goal

  208. is the rearing

  209. or the building

  210. on the living stone.

  211. It's Christ.

  212. So I'm going to follow

  213. that basic outline.

  214. First,

  215. let's look at verses

  216. 22 to 25 of chapter 1

  217. where Peter tells us

  218. about the reason

  219. why we should love

  220. one another

  221. that we have been born

  222. of the living word of God.

  223. He says in verses

  224. 22 to 23,

  225. having purified

  226. your souls

  227. by your obedience

  228. to the truth

  229. for a sincere

  230. brotherly love,

  231. love one another

  232. earnestly

  233. from a pure heart

  234. since

  235. you have been

  236. born again

  237. not of perishable seed

  238. but of imperishable

  239. through the living

  240. and abiding

  241. word of God.

  242. Note

  243. the structure

  244. of that first sentence.

  245. He says

  246. the very reason

  247. for which we have

  248. purified our souls

  249. by obedience

  250. to the truth

  251. is to love

  252. one another.

  253. He says

  254. having purified

  255. your souls

  256. by obedience

  257. to the truth

  258. for a sincere

  259. brotherly love.

  260. That's the reason

  261. for which we

  262. believe in the gospel

  263. the good news

  264. of Jesus Christ.

  265. The reason

  266. for which we

  267. obey the truth

  268. of the gospel

  269. is so that we

  270. may have sincere

  271. brotherly love.

  272. So becoming

  273. a Christian

  274. then is not

  275. merely about

  276. assenting

  277. to a set

  278. of propositional truths.

  279. It's about

  280. loving God

  281. and one another.

  282. And when we

  283. believe in the gospel

  284. of Jesus Christ

  285. the good news

  286. that Christ

  287. the son of God

  288. became a man

  289. and then lived

  290. a perfect life

  291. and died

  292. to pay for our sins

  293. and rose again

  294. to give us new life.

  295. When you believe

  296. this truth

  297. we do not simply

  298. get to know

  299. about God

  300. or hear about God

  301. but we come

  302. to love God

  303. and from that

  304. we come to love

  305. one another.

  306. So then the

  307. touchstone

  308. of our faith

  309. then is love.

  310. It's an earnest

  311. love from a pure

  312. heart as it says

  313. in these verses.

  314. It's not

  315. theological aptitude

  316. or spiritual

  317. gifting even.

  318. It's love

  319. that we have

  320. for God

  321. and for one another.

  322. And by love

  323. I don't mean

  324. this kind of

  325. flimsy

  326. weightless

  327. kind of

  328. empty

  329. kind of love

  330. that people

  331. talk about

  332. and it's better

  333. to call that

  334. kindness

  335. than love

  336. probably.

  337. And C.S. Lewis

  338. highlights this difference

  339. in his book

  340. The Problem of Pain.

  341. He says

  342. You guys follow that?

  343. So the so-called

  344. kindness

  345. that says to people

  346. do whatever

  347. makes you happy

  348. and that's fine

  349. with me

  350. is no love

  351. at all

  352. rather it's a cold

  353. detached

  354. and uninvested

  355. kind of kindness.

  356. Because with the people

  357. that we care the most

  358. about we risk rejection.

  359. We speak the truth.

  360. We get our hands dirty.

  361. We tell them

  362. we don't simply tell them

  363. do whatever you want to do

  364. whatever makes you happy.

  365. We tell them

  366. this is what is good for you.

  367. This is what will make you happy.

  368. We tell them

  369. the truth.

  370. We speak to them

  371. into their lives.

  372. That's what true love

  373. looks like

  374. because it's a love

  375. that's rooted

  376. in truth.

  377. As it says

  378. Having purified your souls

  379. by your obedience

  380. to the truth

  381. for a sincere

  382. brotherly love.

  383. Sincere brotherly love

  384. springs from

  385. obedience to the truth.

  386. They can't be divorced

  387. from one another.

  388. Moreover

  389. it's important for us

  390. to note that this is

  391. brotherly love

  392. and that includes

  393. sisterly love.

  394. It's the fact

  395. that we have to love

  396. one another

  397. as siblings

  398. as brothers and sisters

  399. in Christ.

  400. And I've mentioned

  401. this to you before

  402. but the reason for this

  403. is that we have been

  404. born again

  405. into the family of God.

  406. Now that we have God

  407. as our father

  408. we are by

  409. nature of our relation

  410. to father

  411. related to one another

  412. as brothers

  413. and sisters.

  414. And sibling love

  415. is special

  416. in many ways

  417. but one way

  418. in particular

  419. because most other loves

  420. we choose

  421. and deliberately

  422. enter into them.

  423. So you choose

  424. whom you're going

  425. to date

  426. or marry

  427. and you choose

  428. whom you're going

  429. to have friends with

  430. but you don't choose

  431. who you get to have

  432. as your brother

  433. or sister.

  434. You have them

  435. as brother and sister

  436. simply because

  437. you have the same father

  438. and the same mother.

  439. And that's what it means

  440. to love one another

  441. as siblings

  442. is that

  443. it's not

  444. that we gather

  445. as a church

  446. because

  447. we have these

  448. similar interests

  449. or that we look

  450. like each other

  451. or that we

  452. have similar personalities

  453. and opinions.

  454. But we gather

  455. as a church

  456. and we are united

  457. as a church

  458. as a family of God

  459. because of our relation

  460. to God the father.

  461. So that's why

  462. we bear with each other's quirks

  463. each other's unusual habits

  464. odd opinions

  465. maybe

  466. whatever it may be

  467. whatever people outside

  468. may say to us

  469. about each other

  470. we can still say

  471. this is my brother

  472. and this is my sister

  473. because we have

  474. the same father

  475. in God.

  476. And that's why

  477. it concerns me

  478. deeply when I hear people

  479. say things

  480. like

  481. and leave the church

  482. flippantly

  483. saying things like

  484. I don't like

  485. so and so

  486. personality

  487. or

  488. I don't

  489. fit in here

  490. at this church

  491. or

  492. I don't like

  493. the style of music

  494. here

  495. or

  496. my ethnicity

  497. or age group

  498. is not represented

  499. in this church

  500. because these are not

  501. the kind of reasons

  502. for which you'd leave

  503. your family

  504. because you wouldn't say

  505. oh I just don't get along

  506. with my brother

  507. so I'm going to stop

  508. being his brother

  509. I mean

  510. oh I don't really

  511. like the things

  512. that my sister does

  513. so I'm going to stop

  514. calling her my sister

  515. right

  516. a family sticks together

  517. just because

  518. it's a family

  519. right

  520. and that kind of

  521. added to betrays

  522. a lack of commitment

  523. to the body

  524. of Christ

  525. because

  526. that's not

  527. the kind of attitude

  528. that would stay

  529. in the middle

  530. of a plague

  531. in the city

  532. to care for the sick

  533. right

  534. we are the family

  535. of God

  536. we are part of

  537. the same household

  538. and families

  539. are meant to

  540. suffer together

  541. stick it out together

  542. and change together

  543. even as necessary

  544. right

  545. so that's how

  546. we are to love

  547. one another

  548. as a church

  549. because

  550. we have been

  551. born again

  552. into God's family

  553. and not only that

  554. we have to consider

  555. also what

  556. we have been

  557. born

  558. like

  559. consider by what

  560. we have been

  561. born again

  562. into God's family

  563. look at verse 23

  564. with me

  565. of chapter 1

  566. it says

  567. since you have

  568. been born again

  569. not of perishable

  570. seed

  571. but of imperishable

  572. through the living

  573. and abiding

  574. word of God

  575. it says

  576. we have been

  577. born again

  578. by the living

  579. and abiding

  580. word of God

  581. so here

  582. Peter is

  583. contrasting

  584. two worlds

  585. he is

  586. contrasting

  587. the eternal

  588. spiritual realm

  589. with the temporal

  590. physical realm

  591. and he is

  592. comparing the

  593. heavenly realm

  594. that we are part of

  595. now

  596. we are citizens of

  597. with the earthly realm

  598. that we are still

  599. aliens in

  600. even though we are

  601. maybe citizens

  602. of an earthly nation

  603. and this is

  604. insightful

  605. and helpful for us

  606. because

  607. what we see around us

  608. the culture around us

  609. the politics

  610. the pop culture

  611. everything that we see

  612. may seem very real

  613. and tangible

  614. and permanent

  615. and alluring

  616. and enduring

  617. but all the desires

  618. of the flesh

  619. and all the accomplishments

  620. of our world

  621. that feel so compelling

  622. and irresistible

  623. is

  624. as it says

  625. in verses 24 to 25

  626. all flesh

  627. is like grass

  628. and all its glory

  629. like the flower of grass

  630. the grass withers

  631. and the flower falls

  632. but the word of the Lord

  633. remains

  634. forever

  635. now Peter

  636. is quoting here

  637. from Isaiah 40

  638. verses 68

  639. which God

  640. reassures his people

  641. of the hope

  642. that they have

  643. while they're in exile

  644. in the Babylonian exile

  645. so he's reminding them

  646. of their hope

  647. and future deliverance

  648. which fits exactly

  649. the context

  650. in which Peter's writing

  651. to the people

  652. who are in spiritual exile

  653. here on earth

  654. during the Roman Empire

  655. and if you consider

  656. that context

  657. actually

  658. it's even more remarkable

  659. what Peter is saying

  660. because Peter is writing

  661. at the height

  662. the zenith

  663. of the Roman Empire

  664. and the Roman Empire

  665. as you guys know

  666. is one of the most glorious

  667. and impressive civilizations

  668. in human history

  669. the empire

  670. was some of the largest

  671. sprawling throughout

  672. Europe and Asia

  673. the emperor

  674. was the most powerful ruler

  675. on earth

  676. at the time

  677. Rome was the largest city

  678. in the world

  679. at the time

  680. their army

  681. was the most powerful military

  682. in the world

  683. at the time

  684. and all of this

  685. Peter says

  686. grass

  687. all its glory

  688. like the flower of grass

  689. the grass withers

  690. and the flower falls

  691. but the word of the Lord

  692. remains

  693. forever

  694. and I hope you really

  695. believe this

  696. because this is a

  697. very liberating

  698. and freeing

  699. truth

  700. if you really get this

  701. because then we don't

  702. have to live

  703. in captivity to the world

  704. because all the worldly

  705. fame and recognition

  706. what school you went to

  707. where you work

  708. how much you make

  709. what your position is

  710. how much you

  711. you know

  712. all of this

  713. is but grass

  714. all the worldly riches

  715. that we might think of

  716. or envy people of

  717. the car you drive

  718. the house you live in

  719. clothes you wear

  720. it's all grass

  721. right

  722. all the worldly accomplishments

  723. the patents

  724. you may win

  725. the laws you may pass

  726. the scientific breakthroughs

  727. architectural monuments

  728. all of that

  729. is grass

  730. and I'm not trying to say

  731. that these work

  732. this kind of work

  733. is not valuable

  734. because

  735. these work

  736. this kind of work

  737. can have eternal significance

  738. when they're done

  739. out of love for God

  740. and love for one another

  741. for his glory

  742. right

  743. but in and of themselves

  744. all of these human accomplishments

  745. all the things

  746. accomplished by the flesh

  747. is grass

  748. they will fade in memory

  749. and corrode with time

  750. but God's living word

  751. abides

  752. it says

  753. it will remain forever

  754. and since you have been born

  755. of this imperishable

  756. living and abiding word of God

  757. then Peter is saying

  758. this is his logic

  759. because you've been born

  760. of this abiding word of God

  761. the living word of God

  762. you should then live

  763. with eternity in view

  764. you should live

  765. with the long view

  766. long perspective on life

  767. and this reminds us

  768. of 1 Corinthians 13 13

  769. where Apostle Paul says

  770. now faith, hope, and love

  771. abide

  772. these three

  773. but the greatest of these

  774. is love

  775. right

  776. so what they're saying

  777. basically is

  778. love is the stuff of eternity

  779. because

  780. because the love

  781. is the essence

  782. God is love

  783. and love is the essence

  784. of the new eternal nature

  785. that we have

  786. now it's people

  787. who are indwelled

  788. by the spirit of God

  789. and the love of God

  790. right

  791. so love is what's going to last

  792. therefore

  793. people as

  794. people who have been

  795. born again

  796. by the living

  797. and abiding word

  798. the eternal word

  799. we should live

  800. with love

  801. because love

  802. is what lasts

  803. what is eternal

  804. so that's the reason

  805. for which

  806. reason of why

  807. we have to live

  808. love one another

  809. the house of God

  810. should love one another

  811. because they have been born

  812. of the living word

  813. and even though

  814. it could be hard

  815. to remember

  816. this truth as we live

  817. you could kind of

  818. think of it like

  819. let's say you were

  820. getting into

  821. you have a really

  822. really entrancing

  823. video game

  824. that you're getting into

  825. or a TV show

  826. or a movie

  827. and you're watching

  828. and

  829. if it's a really good

  830. game or movie

  831. or film

  832. or show

  833. you kind of get

  834. immersed in it

  835. right

  836. and you come to

  837. identify with the

  838. characters

  839. and you feel

  840. sad

  841. when the characters

  842. are sad

  843. you feel their joy

  844. you feel their

  845. empowerment

  846. as well as their

  847. enfeeblement

  848. you identify with that

  849. but at the end of that

  850. at the end of the show

  851. or at the end of the game

  852. you realize

  853. that was just temporary

  854. it was a virtual

  855. world

  856. it wasn't real

  857. and you resume

  858. your regular life

  859. right

  860. and it's not going

  861. to be unlike that

  862. at the end of time

  863. right

  864. that the life we live

  865. the human accomplishments

  866. the world of the flesh

  867. is going to seem

  868. that

  869. chimeral

  870. that

  871. fleeting

  872. in light of the reality

  873. of God's love

  874. and the eternity

  875. that we get to share

  876. with him

  877. now so if that's the reason

  878. why we must love

  879. one another

  880. Peter also tells us

  881. the means by which

  882. we love one another

  883. it's in chapter 2

  884. verses 1 to 3

  885. and he says

  886. let me read it out loud

  887. so put away

  888. all malice

  889. and all deceit

  890. and hypocrisy

  891. and envy

  892. and all slander

  893. like newborn infants

  894. long for the pure

  895. spiritual milk

  896. that by it

  897. you may grow up

  898. into salvation

  899. if indeed

  900. you have tasted

  901. that the Lord

  902. is good

  903. so what is the means

  904. by which

  905. we love one another

  906. he says

  907. it involves

  908. putting away

  909. all malice

  910. and all deceit

  911. and hypocrisy

  912. and envy

  913. and all slander

  914. and if you notice

  915. what category

  916. these sins

  917. fall into

  918. all of these

  919. are vices

  920. that destroy

  921. relationships

  922. and community

  923. and that's why

  924. they're listed here

  925. because instead

  926. as Christians

  927. of relating to one another

  928. with malice

  929. ill will

  930. we have to have

  931. good will

  932. toward one another

  933. instead of deceiving

  934. one another

  935. we have to be honest

  936. and speak the truth

  937. with one another

  938. instead of being

  939. hypocritical

  940. we have to be sincere

  941. right

  942. just have sincere

  943. brotherly love

  944. for one another

  945. and instead of

  946. envying one another

  947. or slandering one another

  948. we have to seek

  949. one another's good

  950. and love one another

  951. and consider others

  952. better than ourselves

  953. right

  954. and this is not easy

  955. because we have

  956. a real spiritual enemy

  957. and Satan is

  958. actively seeking

  959. to destroy us

  960. to destroy the community

  961. by inciting

  962. precisely these things

  963. malice

  964. deceit

  965. hypocrisy

  966. envy

  967. and slander

  968. and we as a church

  969. have to stake

  970. our ground

  971. our claim on the ground

  972. and say

  973. refuse to yield

  974. and repent

  975. each time we fail

  976. in this regard

  977. repent

  978. and ask

  979. forgiveness

  980. of one another

  981. and Peter goes on

  982. in verse 2

  983. like newborn infants

  984. long for the pure

  985. spiritual milk

  986. that by it

  987. you may grow up

  988. into salvation

  989. if indeed

  990. you have tasted

  991. that the Lord

  992. is good

  993. now he's

  994. continuing the metaphor

  995. of the birth

  996. of the new birth

  997. of Christians here

  998. so since we have been

  999. born again

  1000. now as newborn infants

  1001. we should crave

  1002. pure spiritual milk

  1003. and there's a

  1004. double word play

  1005. here going on

  1006. that's not apparent

  1007. in the English necessarily

  1008. but because the word

  1009. pure

  1010. literally means

  1011. deceitless

1012. and now if you remember

1013. he had just told us

1014. to put away all deceit

  1015. and now he says

  1016. to crave

  1017. long for deceitless

  1018. milk

  1019. right

  1020. and then Peter also

  1021. tells us that

  1022. that we were born

1023. of the word of God

1024. and then he tells us

  1025. to long for

  1026. spiritual milk

  1027. the word

  1028. word

  1029. and spiritual

  1030. both come from

  1031. the same Greek root

  1032. if you're reading it

  1033. in Greek

  1034. they look almost

  1035. identical

  1036. and so he's

  1037. saying here

  1038. so the word

  1039. spiritual here

  1040. it's not the same

  1041. word that's used

  1042. later in the passage

  1043. if you look at

  1044. verse 5

  1045. it says that

  1046. the church is called

  1047. a spiritual house

  1048. that

  1049. and a holy priesthood

  1050. that offers

  1051. spiritual sacrifices

  1052. so it's a different

  1053. word

  1054. so it actually

  1055. as spiritual

  1056. it's translated

  1057. spiritual

  1058. but actually means

  1059. something more like

  1060. true to the nature

  1061. of

  1062. appropriate

  1063. or corresponding

  1064. to the nature

  1065. of

  1066. so

  1067. what that means

  1068. here then

  1069. is that

  1070. this milk

  1071. is true

  1072. to the nature

  1073. of our new

  1074. birth

  1075. by the word

  1076. of God

  1077. so he's saying

  1078. crave the milk

  1079. and milk

  1080. obviously symbolizes

  1081. nourishment

  1082. sustenance

  1083. so crave

  1084. that milk

  1085. that is true

  1086. to the nature

  1087. of your new

  1088. birth

  1089. in Christ

  1090. the deceitless

  1091. the one

  1092. something that is

  1093. deceitless

  1094. and true to

  1095. nature of your

  1096. birth

  1097. by the word

  1098. of God

  1099. that's what

  1100. he's referring

  1101. to

  1102. and the milk

  1103. here

  1104. even though

  1105. in other parts

  1106. of the Bible

  1107. the word

  1108. milk

  1109. is contrasted

  1110. with solid

  1111. food

  1112. to refer

  1113. to kind of

  1114. food for

  1115. immature

  1116. Christians

  1117. so he's saying

  1118. well mature

  1119. Christians

  1120. should eat

  1121. solid food

  1122. but milk

  1123. should be

  1124. reserved for

  1125. immature

  1126. Christians

  1127. but that's

  1128. not the

  1129. contrast

  1130. that Peter

  1131. is drawing

  1132. here

  1133. because this

  1134. is a milk

  1135. for all

  1136. of us

  1137. so he's

  1138. saying

  1139. this is

  1140. good milk

  1141. pure

  1142. milk

  1143. spiritual

  1144. milk

  1145. that every

  1146. believer

  1147. needs

  1148. every church

  1149. is fed

  1150. on

  1151. is grown

  1152. by

  1153. nurtured

  1154. by

  1155. so that's

  1156. the milk

  1157. that is

  1158. in view

  1159. so what

  1160. exactly

  1161. is this

  1162. milk

  1163. that's

  1164. probably

  1165. the question

  1166. you're

  1167. wondering

  1168. and some

  1169. people think

  1170. that the

  1171. milk here

  1172. refers to

  1173. the word

  1174. of God

  1175. and that's

  1176. possible

  1177. but I

  1178. think that

  1179. would be

  1180. a little bit

  1181. inconsistent

  1182. with the

  1183. metaphor

  1184. that Peter

  1185. is using

  1186. because he's

  1187. saying we

  1188. were born

  1189. by the word

  1190. of God

  1191. and now

  1192. we're

  1193. nursed

  1194. by the

  1195. spiritual

  1196. milk

  1197. so it's

  1198. not

  1199. consistent

  1200. if that's

  1201. what he's

  1202. doing

  1203. in terms

  1204. of

  1205. metaphor

  1206. and I

  1207. think the

  1208. key to

  1209. understanding

  1210. is in

  1211. the actual

  1212. Old Testament

  1213. verse that

  1214. Peter's quoting

  1215. which is

  1216. Psalm 34

  1217. 8

  1218. and in

  1219. Psalm 34

  1220. 8 which

  1221. was part of

  1222. our cult

  1223. worship

  1224. and in

  1225. the Greek

  1226. version of

  1227. the psalm

  1228. which Peter

  1229. would have been

  1230. using

  1231. it says

  1232. oh taste

  1233. oh taste

  1234. and see

  1235. that the

  1236. Lord

  1237. is good

  1238. blessed

  1239. is the

  1240. man

  1241. who

  1242. hopes

  1243. in

  1244. him

  1245. and

  1246. notice

  1247. the parallel

  1248. statements

  1249. between

  1250. tasting

  1251. and seeing

  1252. that the

  1253. Lord

  1254. is good

  1255. and setting

  1256. our hope

  1257. on him

  1258. those two

  1259. things are

  1260. parallel

  1261. and that

  1262. should

  1263. immediately

  1264. ring a bell

  1265. it should

  1266. sound familiar

  1267. because we

  1268. just learned

  1269. about in

  1270. chapter 1

  1271. verse 13

  1272. Peter was

  1273. exhorting us

  1274. to set

  1275. our hope

  1276. fully

  1277. on the

  1278. grace

  1279. that will

  1280. be brought

  1281. to us

  1282. at the

  1283. revelation

  1284. of Jesus

  1285. Christ

  1286. so that's

  1287. note the

  1288. logical

  1289. connection

  1290. there

  1291. so that

  1292. in verse

  1293. 2 and

  1294. 3 as

  1295. well

  1296. if indeed

  1297. you have

  1298. tasted

  1299. that the

  1300. Lord

  1301. is good

  1302. then long

  1303. for this

  1304. pure

  1305. spiritual

  1306. milk

  1307. so what

  1308. we have

  1309. tasted

  1310. is the

  1311. Lord

  1312. himself

  1313. so then

  1314. what we

  1315. ought to

  1316. long

  1317. for

  1318. the pure

  1319. spiritual

  1320. milk

  1321. also is

  1322. the

  1323. Lord

  1324. himself

  1325. it's

  1326. the grace

  1327. of God

  1328. it's the

  1329. grace

  1330. of our

  1331. Lord

  1332. that's

  1333. what we're

  1334. supposed

  1335. to set

  1336. our

  1337. hope

  1338. on

  1339. and

  1340. that's

  1341. what

  1342. we're

  1343. being

  1344. called

  1345. to

  1346. long

  1347. for

  1348. and

  1349. crave

  1350. the

  1351. milk

  1352. is

  1353. God

  1354. himself

  1355. his

  1356. grace

  1357. and

  1358. isn't

  1359. it's

  1360. cool how

  1361. Peter

  1362. leaves out

  1363. the

  1364. sea

  1365. part

  1366. but he

  1367. includes

  1368. the

  1369. taste

  1370. part

  1371. taste

  1372. if you

  1373. have

  1374. indeed

  1375. tasted

  1376. that

  1377. the

  1378. Lord

  1379. is

  1380. good

  1381. and

  1382. that's

  1383. such

  1384. an

  1385. intimate

  1386. metaphor

  1387. right

  1388. because

  1389. if you

  1390. think about

  1391. the five

  1392. senses

  1393. that we

  1394. have

  1395. seeing

  1396. hearing

  1397. smelling

  1398. and

  1399. touching

  1400. not all

  1401. of those

  1402. are

  1403. external

  1404. it's

  1405. outside

  1406. of

  1407. ourselves

  1408. but

  1409. tasting

  1410. involves

  1411. ingesting

  1412. right

  1413. it

  1414. becomes

  1415. a part

  1416. of us

  1417. when we

  1418. eat

  1419. something

  1420. so

  1421. it's

  1422. such

  1423. an

  1424. intimate

  1425. and

  1426. powerful

  1427. picture

  1428. of us

  1429. savoring

  1430. tasting

  1431. him

  1432. making

  1433. God

  1434. part

  1435. of us

  1436. becoming

  1437. a part

  1438. of

  1439. God

  1440. so

  1441. it's

  1442. not

  1443. enough

  1444. that we

  1445. just

  1446. hear

  1447. about

  1448. him

  1449. we

  1450. have

  1451. to

  1452. taste

  1453. him

  1454. and

  1455. those

  1456. that

  1457. have

  1458. partaken

  1459. of

  1460. God

  1461. through

  1462. his

  1463. spirit

  1464. will

  1465. continue

  1466. to

  1467. long

  1468. for

  1469. more

  1470. of

  1471. that

  1472. milk

  1473. more

  1474. of

  1475. God's

  1476. grace

  1477. and

  1478. John

  1479. Piper

  1480. who's

  1481. a pastor

  1482. a theologian

  1483. he writes

  1484. about this

  1485. truth

  1486. in his

  1487. book

  1488. Desiring

  1489. God

  1490. he writes

  1491. all the

  1492. evils in

  1493. the world

  1494. come

  1495. not because

  1496. our desires

  1497. for happiness

  1498. are too

  1499. strong

  1500. but because

  1501. they are so

  1502. weak

  1503. that we

  1504. settle for

  1505. fleeting

  1506. pleasures

  1507. that do

  1508. not satisfy

  1509. our deepest

  1510. souls

  1511. he continues

  1512. in another

  1513. part of

  1514. the book

  1515. he says

  1516. I know

  1517. of no

  1518. other way

  1519. to triumph

  1520. over sin

  1521. long term

  1522. than to

  1523. gain a

  1524. distaste

  1525. for it

  1526. because

  1527. of a

  1528. superior

  1529. satisfaction

  1530. in God

  1531. unless

  1532. we have

  1533. tasted

  1534. that the

  1535. Lord is

  1536. good

  1537. have

  1538. savored

  1539. him

  1540. and find

  1541. more joy

  1542. and satisfaction

  1543. in that

  1544. than anything

  1545. else

  1546. we will

  1547. not be

  1548. able to

  1549. overcome

  1550. sins

  1551. in our

  1552. lives

  1553. the temptations

  1554. that we

  1555. face

  1556. because

  1557. we won't

  1558. long for

  1559. God

  1560. that

  1561. spiritual

  1562. milk

  1563. more than

  1564. we long

  1565. for those

  1566. things

  1567. and that

  1568. of course

  1569. means that

  1570. we have to

  1571. make use

  1572. of the

  1573. means of

  1574. grace

  1575. that God

  1576. has given

  1577. us

  1578. spending

  1579. time in

  1580. prayer

  1581. being in

  1582. God's

  1583. word

  1584. where we

  1585. can

  1586. encounter

  1587. him

  1588. and God

  1589. speaks

  1590. to us

  1591. so that's

  1592. what is

  1593. in view

  1594. here

  1595. to say

  1596. so if

  1597. the reason

  1598. why we have

  1599. to love

  1600. one another

  1601. is because

  1602. we have been

  1603. born of

  1604. the living

  1605. word

  1606. the means

  1607. by which

  1608. we grow

  1609. in that

  1610. and love

  1611. one another

  1612. is by being

  1613. nursed

  1614. by this

  1615. milk

  1616. life-giving

  1617. milk

  1618. of God's

  1619. grace

  1620. and

  1621. finally

  1622. if you look

  1623. at verses

  1624. 4 to

  1625. 10

  1626. Peter tells

  1627. us

  1628. the purpose

  1629. the goal

  1630. of our love

  1631. for one another

  1632. and that

  1633. is that

  1634. we would

  1635. be

  1636. reared

  1637. that word

  1638. has two

  1639. different senses

  1640. of raising

  1641. or caring

  1642. for but

  1643. also of

  1644. building

  1645. and constructing

  1646. so that we

  1647. are to be

  1648. reared

  1649. on the

  1650. living

  1651. stone

  1652. it's been

  1653. a little

  1654. while so

  1655. let me

  1656. just

  1657. recap

  1658. by reading

  1659. verses

  1660. 4 to

  1661. 10

  1662. follow along

  1663. with me

  1664. there

  1665. it says

  1666. as you

  1667. come to

  1668. him

  1669. a living

  1670. stone

  1671. rejected

  1672. by men

  1673. but in

  1674. the sight

  1675. of God

  1676. chosen

  1677. and precious

  1678. you yourselves

  1679. like living

  1680. stones

  1681. are being

  1682. built up

  1683. as a

  1684. spiritual

  1685. house

  1686. to be

  1687. a holy

  1688. priesthood

  1689. to offer

  1690. spiritual

  1691. sacrifices

  1692. acceptable

  1693. to God

  1694. through

  1695. Jesus

  1696. Christ

  1697. for it

  1698. stands

  1699. in

  1700. scripture

  1701. behold

  1702. I am

  1703. laying

  1704. in Zion

  1705. a stone

  1706. a corner

  1707. stone

  1708. chosen

  1709. and

  1710. precious

  1711. and

  1712. whoever

  1713. believes

  1714. in him

  1715. will not

  1716. be put

  1717. to shame

  1718. so the

  1719. honor

  1720. is for

  1721. you

  1722. who

  1723. believe

  1724. but for

  1725. those

  1726. who do

  1727. not

  1728. believe

  1729. the stone

  1730. that the

  1731. builders

  1732. rejected

  1733. has

  1734. become

  1735. the

  1736. corner

  1737. stone

  1738. and a

  1739. stone

  1740. of

  1741. stumbling

  1742. and a

  1743. rock

  1744. of

  1745. offense

  1746. they stumble

  1747. because they

  1748. disobey the

  1749. word as

  1750. they were

  1751. destined to

  1752. do

  1753. but you

  1754. are a

  1755. chosen race

  1756. a royal

  1757. priesthood

  1758. a holy

  1759. nation

  1760. a people

  1761. for his

  1762. own

  1763. possession

  1764. that you

  1765. may proclaim

  1766. the excellencies

  1767. of him

  1768. who called

  1769. you out

  1770. of darkness

  1771. into his

  1772. marvelous

  1773. light

  1774. once you

  1775. were not

  1776. a people

  1777. but now

  1778. you are

  1779. God's

  1780. people

  1781. once

  1782. you

  1783. had

  1784. not

  1785. received

  1786. mercy

  1787. but now

  1788. you

  1789. have

  1790. received

  1791. mercy

  1792. I don't

  1793. know if

  1794. you're

  1795. noticing

  1796. or following

  1797. all the

  1798. parallels

  1799. here between

  1800. Christ and

  1801. his church

  1802. it says in

  1803. verse 4

  1804. that Christ

  1805. is a

  1806. living stone

  1807. and then in

  1808. the same

  1809. verse it

  1810. says that

  1811. Christians

  1812. likewise

  1813. are living

  1814. stones

  1815. in verse 6

  1816. says that

  1817. Christ is the

  1818. cornerstone

  1819. the cornerstone

  1820. of a house

  1821. and it says

  1822. that in

  1823. verse 5

  1824. that Christians

  1825. are that

  1826. house

  1827. which Christ

  1828. is the

  1829. cornerstone

  1830. of

  1831. it says

  1832. in verse 7

  1833. that

  1834. well it

  1835. says that

  1836. verse 7

  1837. that honor

  1838. is for you

  1839. who believe

  1840. and the word

  1841. that's translated

  1842. precious here

  1843. of Christ

  1844. Christ is the

  1845. precious

  1846. cornerstone

  1847. means honored

  1848. literally

  1849. so Christ

  1850. is the

  1851. honored stone

  1852. and we

  1853. likewise

  1854. are honored

  1855. right

  1856. and these

  1857. parallels exist

  1858. because we

  1859. are now

  1860. a part of

  1861. Christ

  1862. right

  1863. because we

  1864. have been

  1865. born again

  1866. into his

  1867. family

  1868. and we

  1869. are part

  1870. of the

  1871. construction

  1872. the building

  1873. work

  1874. that God

  1875. is

  1876. undertaking

  1877. right now

  1878. and it's

  1879. because our

  1880. nature derives

  1881. from the

  1882. resurrected

  1883. Christ

  1884. that we

  1885. are now

  1886. a spiritual

  1887. house

  1888. living stone

  1889. and honored

  1890. because of

  1891. what Christ

  1892. has done

  1893. for us

  1894. and this

  1895. is such a

  1896. powerful

  1897. truth

  1898. that emphasized

  1899. the unity

  1900. of the

  1901. church

  1902. because

  1903. our

  1904. bodies

  1905. who we

  1906. are

  1907. people

  1908. sometimes

  1909. talk about

  1910. we are

  1911. the temple

  1912. of Christ

  1913. like our

  1914. bodies

  1915. are the

  1916. temple

  1917. of Christ

  1918. and that's

  1919. a true

  1920. statement

  1921. that's also

  1922. a biblical

  1923. statement

  1924. we as

  1925. individuals

  1926. are also

  1927. the temple

  1928. of Christ

  1929. but

  1930. even more

  1931. importantly

  1932. we sometimes

  1933. neglect the

  1934. fact that

  1935. we as a

  1936. body

  1937. as a

  1938. church

  1939. is the

  1940. temple

  1941. of God

  1942. and that's

  1943. what it

  1944. is referring

  1945. to when he

  1946. says we're

  1947. a spiritual

  1948. house

  1949. we're a

  1950. house

  1951. of the

  1952. spirit

  1953. we're

  1954. supposed to

  1955. be indwelt

  1956. by the

  1957. spirit

  1958. and together

  1959. as a

  1960. church

  1961. we make

  1962. up that

  1963. house

  1964. and the

  1965. household

  1966. is why I

  1967. said household

  1968. earlier is

  1969. because this

  1970. word house

  1971. can mean the

  1972. literal construction

  1973. the building

  1974. of a house

  1975. but also

  1976. can refer

  1977. to a

  1978. household

  1979. and I

  1980. think Peter

  1981. has that

  1982. double meaning

  1983. in view

  1984. because that's

  1985. the context

  1986. of the

  1987. psalm

  1988. that he

  1989. is citing

  1990. but also

  1991. because he's

  1992. continuing that

  1993. metaphor of the

  1994. family

  1995. you've been

  1996. born again

  1997. now you've

  1998. been

  1999. nursed by

  2000. the

  2001. milk

  2002. and now

  2003. you are

  2004. being built

  2005. as a

  2006. family

  2007. as a

  2008. household

  2009. and you're

  2010. being built

  2011. as stones

  2012. as well

  2013. as a physical

  2014. house

  2015. and Charles

  2016. Spurgeon once

  2017. commented on this

  2018. in one of his

  2019. sermons

  2020. in his

  2021. characteristic

  2022. wit

  2023. he says

  2024. I know

  2025. there are

  2026. some who

  2027. say

  2028. well

  2029. I have

  2030. given

  2031. myself

  2032. to the

  2033. Lord

  2034. but I

  2035. do not

  2036. intend

  2037. to give

  2038. myself

  2039. to any

  2040. church

  2041. now why

  2042. not

  2043. because I

  2044. can be a

  2045. Christian

  2046. without it

  2047. and then

  2048. Spurgeon

  2049. continues

  2050. are you

  2051. quite clear

  2052. about that

  2053. you can be

  2054. as good

  2055. a Christian

  2056. by disobedience

  2057. to your

  2058. Lord's

  2059. commands

  2060. as by

  2061. being

  2062. obedient

  2063. there is

  2064. a brick

  2065. what is it

  2066. made for

  2067. to help

  2068. build a

  2069. house

  2070. it is of

  2071. no use

  2072. for that

  2073. brick

  2074. to tell you

  2075. that it

  2076. is just

  2077. as good

  2078. a brick

  2079. while it

  2080. is kicking

  2081. about on the

  2082. ground

  2083. as it would

  2084. be in the

  2085. house

  2086. it is a

  2087. good for

  2088. nothing brick

  2089. so you

  2090. rolling stone

  2091. Christians

  2092. I do

  2093. not believe

  2094. that you

  2095. are answering

  2096. your purpose

  2097. you are

  2098. living

  2099. contrary

  2100. to the

  2101. life

  2102. which

  2103. Christ

  2104. would

  2105. have

  2106. you

  2107. live

  2108. and you

  2109. are much

  2110. to blame

  2111. for the

  2112. injury

  2113. you do

  2114. being a

  2115. spiritual

  2116. house

  2117. is not

  2118. optional

  2119. for

  2120. believers

  2121. if you

  2122. are not

  2123. being reared

  2124. on the

  2125. living stone

  2126. being built

  2127. up as a

  2128. part of

  2129. this

  2130. spiritual

  2131. house

  2132. that God

  2133. is building

  2134. then you

  2135. are not

  2136. fulfilling

  2137. your very

  2138. purpose

  2139. as a

  2140. Christian

  2141. that's why

  2142. there's no

  2143. such thing

  2144. as an

  2145. independent

  2146. Christian

  2147. on my

  2148. own

  2149. Christian

  2150. there's no

  2151. such thing

  2152. as having

  2153. a relationship

  2154. with God

  2155. on your

  2156. own

  2157. because by

  2158. virtue of

  2159. your

  2160. relationship

  2161. with God

  2162. if you

  2163. really did

  2164. have a

  2165. relationship

  2166. with God

  2167. you by

  2168. necessity

  2169. have a

  2170. relationship

  2171. with his

  2172. people

  2173. his family

  2174. that's what

  2175. it means

  2176. to be in

  2177. the family

  2178. if you

  2179. know the

  2180. father

  2181. then you

  2182. know your

  2183. brothers

  2184. and sisters

  2185. you're

  2186. either a

  2187. brick

  2188. that is

  2189. part of

  2190. a house

  2191. or a

  2192. good for

  2193. nothing

  2194. brick

  2195. you're

  2196. either

  2197. believer

  2198. a member

  2199. of the

  2200. body

  2201. of Christ

  2202. the church

  2203. or you're

  2204. a detached

  2205. limb

  2206. that is

  2207. as good

  2208. as dead

  2209. and because

  2210. we are

  2211. reared on

  2212. the living

  2213. stone of

  2214. Christ

  2215. and this

  2216. is the

  2217. purpose

  2218. for which

  2219. we have

  2220. been born

  2221. again

  2222. this is

  2223. the reason

  2224. why

  2225. this is

  2226. the purpose

  2227. the goal

  2228. for which

  2229. we love

  2230. one another

  2231. is so that

  2232. we can be

  2233. built up

  2234. with this

  2235. stone

  2236. on this

  2237. living stone

  2238. that can

  2239. be reared

  2240. on this

  2241. living stone

  2242. and grow

  2243. and

  2244. this is a

  2245. really hard

  2246. constant to

  2247. grab a

  2248. grasp

  2249. I think

  2250. especially

  2251. for

  2252. evangelicals

  2253. and

  2254. because

  2255. you'd often

  2256. hear people

  2257. say

  2258. evangelicals

  2259. will say

  2260. things like

  2261. you know

  2262. but whether

  2263. you're a member

  2264. of a local

  2265. church or

  2266. not

  2267. every Christian

  2268. is part of

  2269. the universal

  2270. church

  2271. aren't they

  2272. and that's

  2273. true

  2274. right

  2275. we are part

  2276. of the universal

  2277. church

  2278. but if you

  2279. give no

  2280. evidence

  2281. of your

  2282. heavenly

  2283. membership

  2284. in that

  2285. universal

  2286. church

  2287. by having

  2288. an earthly

  2289. membership

  2290. in the

  2291. local

  2292. church

  2293. then you're

  2294. resting on

  2295. false

  2296. assurance

  2297. right

  2298. because you

  2299. can't separate

  2300. the two

  2301. in this

  2302. life

  2303. right

  2304. this is the

  2305. church that

  2306. God's given

  2307. and this is

  2308. the church

  2309. the local

  2310. church that

  2311. Peter is

  2312. writing to

  2313. and

  2314. Simon

  2315. Chan

  2316. a professor

  2317. at Bible

  2318. University

  2319. writes

  2320. this in

  2321. his book

  2322. Liturgical

  2323. Theology

  2324. this is a

  2325. little bit

  2326. dense but

  2327. I'll explain

  2328. in a second

  2329. to try to

  2330. follow along

  2331. with me

  2332. says the

  2333. evangelical

  2334. movement is

  2335. largely a

  2336. parachurch

  2337. rather than

  2338. a church

  2339. movement

  2340. the visible

  2341. form of

  2342. evangelicalism

  2343. is non

  2344. ecclesiology

  2345. it's the

  2346. voluntary

  2347. society

  2348. in which

  2349. the congregation

  2350. is the

  2351. ultimate

  2352. source of

  2353. authority

  2354. the born

  2355. again

  2356. experience

  2357. that unites

  2358. evangelicals

  2359. has tended

  2360. to highlight

  2361. the value

  2362. of trans

  2363. ecclesial

  2364. fellowship

  2365. rather than

  2366. ecclesial

  2367. structures

  2368. this means

  2369. that what

  2370. is really

  2371. important to

  2372. evangelicals

  2373. is the

  2374. fellowship

  2375. of all

  2376. genuine

  2377. believers

  2378. regardless

  2379. of which

  2380. visible

  2381. churches

  2382. they come

  2383. from

  2384. the

  2385. visible

  2386. church

  2387. thus

  2388. becomes

  2389. in terms

  2390. of the

  2391. salvation

  2392. history

  2393. irrelevant

  2394. in other

  2395. words

  2396. what

  2397. evangelicals

  2398. offer

  2399. is a

  2400. docetic

  2401. ecclesiology

  2402. where the

  2403. real church

  2404. is perceived

  2405. as spiritual

  2406. inward

  2407. and invisible

  2408. and has

  2409. no direct

  2410. correlation

  2411. with the

  2412. visible

  2413. church

  2414. but what

  2415. evangelicals

  2416. need

  2417. is a

  2418. theological

  2419. ecclesiology

  2420. that sees

  2421. ecclesial

  2422. life

  2423. in the

  2424. local

  2425. church

  2426. as coming

  2427. into

  2428. union

  2429. with the

  2430. triune

  2431. God

  2432. with the

  2433. father

  2434. son

  2435. and the

  2436. holy

  2437. spirit

  2438. and this

  2439. is what

  2440. gives the

  2441. true

  2442. church

  2443. its mark

  2444. as the

  2445. church

  2446. of jesus

  2447. christ

  2448. the church

  2449. is the

  2450. god

  2451. ordained

  2452. local

  2453. assembly

  2454. of

  2455. believers

  2456. that

  2457. gathers

  2458. regularly

  2459. that have

  2460. committed

  2461. to one

  2462. another

  2463. that

  2464. gathers

  2465. regularly

  2466. as the

  2467. family

  2468. of god

  2469. they teach

  2470. the word

  2471. of god

  2472. they baptize

  2473. and then

  2474. they share

  2475. in the body

  2476. of christ

  2477. through communion

  2478. and as you

  2479. eat and drink

  2480. for the body

  2481. and blood

  2482. of christ

  2483. we also

  2484. recognize

  2485. that we

  2486. are becoming

  2487. the body

  2488. of christ

  2489. we are the

  2490. body of christ

  2491. and we are

  2492. assured of

  2493. that fact

  2494. and the

  2495. church

  2496. also

  2497. practices

  2498. church

  2499. discipline

  2500. and establishes

  2501. a biblical

  2502. structure

  2503. of leadership

  2504. they live

  2505. together

  2506. they pray

  2507. together

  2508. they grow

  2509. together

  2510. and all

  2511. of these

  2512. things

  2513. none of

  2514. these

  2515. all of

  2516. these

  2517. things

  2518. are found

  2519. in a

  2520. church

  2521. but not

  2522. all of

  2523. them

  2524. can be

  2525. found

  2526. in any

  2527. single

  2528. parachurch

  2529. right

  2530. because

  2531. parachurch

  2532. by

  2533. definition

  2534. is

  2535. dealing

  2536. with the

  2537. narrower

  2538. slice

  2539. of the

  2540. body

  2541. of christ

  2542. either

  2543. they're

  2544. specializing

  2545. in college

  2546. students

  2547. or men

  2548. or women

  2549. or they

  2550. do not

  2551. have

  2552. biblically

  2553. sanctioned

  2554. leadership

  2555. structures

  2556. so therefore

  2557. they can't

  2558. then rightly

  2559. distribute

  2560. communion

  2561. or to

  2562. practice

  2563. church

  2564. discipline

  2565. and all

  2566. of it

  2567. because

  2568. there's

  2569. no such

  2570. structure

  2571. you can't

  2572. say

  2573. just because

  2574. you are

  2575. doing

  2576. bible study

  2577. with people

  2578. or you

  2579. have a

  2580. relationship

  2581. with other

  2582. believers

  2583. that you

  2584. are part

  2585. of the

  2586. spiritual

  2587. house

  2588. and you

  2589. are being

  2590. built up

  2591. as a

  2592. church

  2593. without your

  2594. membership

  2595. in

  2596. the

  2597. local

  2598. church

  2599. the

  2600. church

  2601. that

  2602. christ

  2603. promises

  2604. that even

  2605. the gates

  2606. of hades

  2607. will not

  2608. prevail

  2609. against

  2610. so then

  2611. if this

  2612. is how

  2613. important

  2614. this

  2615. church

  2616. is

  2617. if this

  2618. is the

  2619. goal

  2620. the purpose

  2621. for which

  2622. we have

  2623. been born

  2624. again

  2625. that we

  2626. why we

  2627. are to

  2628. love one

  2629. another

  2630. so that

  2631. we can

  2632. be built

  2633. up into

  2634. this

  2635. house

  2636. how do

  2637. you become

  2638. a part

  2639. of this

  2640. house

  2641. and the

  2642. answer

  2643. is in

  2644. verses

  2645. 7 to

  2646. 8

  2647. so the

  2648. honor is

  2649. for you

  2650. who believe

  2651. but for

  2652. those who

  2653. do not

  2654. believe

  2655. the stone

  2656. that the

  2657. builders

  2658. rejected

  2659. has become

  2660. the

  2661. cornerstone

  2662. and a

  2663. stone of

  2664. stumbling

  2665. and a

  2666. rock of

  2667. offense

  2668. they stumble

  2669. because they

  2670. disobey the

  2671. word as

  2672. they were

  2673. destined to

  2674. do

  2675. just as

  2676. christians are

  2677. those who

  2678. are born

  2679. of the

  2680. living

  2681. word

  2682. non-christians

  2683. by definition

  2684. are those

  2685. who disobey

  2686. the word

  2687. and what

  2688. is this

  2689. word is

  2690. told us

  2691. in chapter

  2692. 1 verse

  2693. 25

  2694. this word

  2695. is the

  2696. good news

  2697. that was

  2698. preached to

  2699. you

  2700. the word

  2701. is the

  2702. gospel of

  2703. jesus christ

  2704. the good

  2705. news that

  2706. the son of

  2707. man

  2708. that jesus

  2709. christ

  2710. came to

  2711. save us

  2712. sinners

  2713. came into

  2714. the world

  2715. to save

  2716. sinners

  2717. like us

  2718. that's the

  2719. good news

  2720. and that's

  2721. what separates

  2722. unbelievers

  2723. from believers

  2724. right

  2725. and this is

  2726. unavoidable

  2727. because you

  2728. have to make

  2729. a decision

  2730. on this

  2731. fact

  2732. christ is

  2733. on the

  2734. path

  2735. the christ

  2736. the living

  2737. stone is

  2738. on the

  2739. path

  2740. of every

  2741. human being

  2742. and you

  2743. have to

  2744. confront him

  2745. on your

  2746. journey

  2747. either you'll

  2748. confront him

  2749. and you will

  2750. stumble over

  2751. him

  2752. he will

  2753. become a

  2754. rock of

  2755. offense

  2756. and you

  2757. will reject

  2758. him

  2759. and disbelieve

  2760. in him

  2761. or you

  2762. will put

  2763. your faith

  2764. in him

  2765. believe in

  2766. him

  2767. and build

  2768. yourself

  2769. around

  2770. and on top

  2771. of that

  2772. living stone

  2773. there's two

  2774. choices

  2775. and it's

  2776. inevitable that

  2777. you go

  2778. through one

  2779. of those

  2780. things

  2781. and this

  2782. is the

  2783. good news

  2784. that

  2785. this is

  2786. the good

  2787. news

  2788. that we

  2789. should

  2790. that we

  2791. project

  2792. and that

  2793. we share

  2794. with all

  2795. around us

  2796. right

  2797. and this

  2798. happens

  2799. and this

  2800. is why

  2801. we are also

  2802. being built

  2803. up as a

  2804. spiritual house

  2805. so we may

  2806. proclaim the

  2807. excellencies of

  2808. god

  2809. right he says

  2810. that's the

  2811. ultimate purpose

  2812. the penultimate

  2813. purpose is that

  2814. we be built up

  2815. as a church

  2816. for the ultimate

  2817. purpose that god

  2818. would be glorified

  2819. his praise

  2820. would be

  2821. proclaimed

  2822. his excellency

  2823. would be

  2824. proclaimed

  2825. throughout the

  2826. world

  2827. right

  2828. and it's

  2829. by this

  2830. good news

  2831. that we

  2832. have become

  2833. as it says

  2834. in verse 9

  2835. a chosen race

  2836. a royal priesthood

  2837. a holy nation

  2838. a people for

  2839. his own

  2840. possession

  2841. now this is

  2842. such a radical

  2843. claim

  2844. right

  2845. because he's

  2846. writing here

  2847. he's saying

  2848. peter's saying

  2849. there's no

  2850. jew

  2851. gentile

  2852. greek

  2853. or roman

  2854. black

  2855. or white

  2856. or hispanic

  2857. or asian

  2858. right

  2859. among christians

  2860. we constitute

  2861. ourselves

  2862. a new race

  2863. as believers

  2864. we are a new

  2865. race

  2866. in christ

  2867. he says

  2868. of those

  2869. who have been

  2870. born again

  2871. into living

  2872. hope

  2873. through the

  2874. resurrection

  2875. of jesus

  2876. christ

  2877. we are also

  2878. a royal

  2879. priesthood

  2880. we are those

  2881. who people

  2882. on earth

  2883. who mediate

  2884. between god

  2885. and the rest

  2886. of the world

  2887. we are the

  2888. ones that

  2889. infuse this

  2890. world with

  2891. the kingdom

  2892. of god

  2893. we are a

  2894. holy nation

  2895. it tells us

  2896. we do not

  2897. belong merely

  2898. to the

  2899. united states

  2900. of america

  2901. or to

  2902. korea

  2903. or to

  2904. china

  2905. right

  2906. we belong

  2907. to the

  2908. holy nation

  2909. of christians

  2910. of believers

  2911. of the family

  2912. of god

  2913. and this

  2914. reality

  2915. not more

  2916. legislation

  2917. or simple

  2918. political

  2919. correctness

  2920. that's going

  2921. to fundamentally

  2922. solve

  2923. racism

  2924. and tribalism

  2925. and international

  2926. hatred

  2927. and enmity

  2928. right

  2929. and jonathan edwards

  2930. writes about this

  2931. in his book

  2932. the nature

  2933. of true

  2934. virtue

  2935. because if

  2936. our highest

  2937. good is our

  2938. family

  2939. then we are

  2940. going to

  2941. discriminate

  2942. against

  2943. other

  2944. families

  2945. if our

  2946. highest

  2947. good is

  2948. our gender

  2949. then we are

  2950. going to

  2951. become sexist

  2952. and discriminate

  2953. against other

  2954. genders

  2955. if our highest

  2956. good is our

  2957. country

  2958. then we are

  2959. going to be

  2960. patriotic

  2961. jingoistic

  2962. right

  2963. and discriminate

  2964. against other

2971. Can we truly be united as people?

2972. And so this is the true solution for the problem that plagues our society now.

2973. And Lindsey Brown, who was once the CEO of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students,

2974. wrote this in his book, Shining Like Stars.

2975. He illustrates this fact in a powerful story.

2976. Because during the Burundi genocide in the early 90s,

2977. a number of Tutsis were killed in tribal fighting against the Hutus.

2978. And this was on campus, a college, Bujumbura University.

2979. And during this time, the Hutus, Hutus were the ones that killed the Tutsis,

2980. Hutu Christians followed the Tutsi Christians into the cave that they were hiding in

2981. to bring them food and clothing.

2982. And as they did that, they became disowned by their own family.

2983. Because they were saying that you're putting your Christian alliance and loyalty higher

2984. than your allegiance to your tribe, your people, your family.

2985. And because of this event, the non-Christian president of Bujumbura University

  2986. made this announcement.

  2987. He said,

  2988. Our culture is disintegrating.

2989. On our campus, there are three groups of people.

  2990. Hutus, Tutsis, and Christians.

2991. If our culture is to survive, we must follow the example of the Christians.

2992. We are a holy nation.

  2993. A new race of God's people.

  2994. A priesthood.

  2995. A royal priesthood.

2996. And all of this, as a result, not of our own works, of our own deserving,

2997. but God's mercy, says in verse 10.

2998. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people.

2999. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

3000. We had been unfaithful to God.

  3001. We had left Him.

3002. And so we had disowned Him.

3003. We were not His people.

3004. But by His grace and through His reproachment, through His Son, Jesus Christ,

3005. we are now His people.

3006. And we have now received mercy.

3007. Imagine if every believer truly considered and understood

3008. the importance of being a member of the household of God.

3009. Imagine if we really loved one another

3010. because we have been born of the living word,

3011. because we have been nursed by the milk, the life-giving milk.

3012. So that we can be built and reared on this living stone.

3013. Now that would be a magnificent spiritual house indeed.

3014. Fitting for the faithful Father and majestic King that we serve.

3015. Fitting for the faithful Father and the Holy Spirit.

  3016. With that, let's...
