  1. So great to be back this morning to worship with you all.

  2. I missed you guys last week.

  3. And it's, as Steve was saying, and we're just,

  4. and he preached about actually last week,

  5. we're just like groomsmen or all the servants of God

  6. watching on as Christ is united to his church, his bride.

  7. So that's why it's okay for me to not be here

  8. and the church goes on because the church doesn't belong to me.

  9. It belongs to God, right?

  10. And so I was sad, but I'm eager because I'm also one of his sheep

  11. and this is the group that I've covenanted with.

  12. It's the church.

  13. I'm excited and there's joy for me as I worship with you.

  14. And as we turn to this passage,

  15. I want you to think for a moment with me

  16. about your greatest unfulfilled desire.

  17. Just think about it for a moment, what it might be.

  18. Maybe it's a dream job that appears far-fetched at the moment

  19. or a big breakthrough in your career.

  20. Maybe it's a spouse.

  21. You really longed for a spouse, a husband or a wife,

  22. to spend the rest of your life with.

  23. Maybe it's just getting really rich

  24. and you fantasize about all the things you might be able to do

  25. with that much money.

  26. Or maybe you're just a little more hedonistic.

  27. You'd rather live, eat good food, drink, and be merry.

  28. Or maybe you're one of those simple folks

  29. who just want to enjoy a stress-free life with your loved ones.

  30. Whatever that may be, what if I told you right now

  31. that I can tell you exactly how you can attain those things?

  32. Then I can guarantee you that the number of attendees

  33. at our church services would swell astronomically.

  34. Because desire is a powerful motivator.

  35. People do things that they seek.

  36. And who would be foolish to refuse such an offer?

  37. And you'd think that in this passage,

  38. Jesus here taps into the desires of the Samaritan woman

  39. in a similar way.

  40. But he doesn't stop there.

  41. He doesn't offer her what she seeks.

  42. But he peers into her very soul

  43. and peels back the layers of self-protection

  44. that she had propped up against other people

  45. to hide her sin and shame.

  46. And then by doing so,

  47. Jesus exposes the woman's deepest,

  48. most fundamental need and desire.

  49. And that, namely, is eternal life.

  50. And so it says, this passage teaches that

  51. we can enjoy eternal life

  52. through the spirit and truth of Jesus Christ.

  53. That's the main point of this passage.

  54. And I'm going to talk first about the promise of eternal life.

  55. And then secondly, the condition for the eternal life

  56. that Jesus tells us about.

  57. So this unusual encounter occurs in Samaria

  58. in a town called Sychar.

  59. Verse 1, he tells us that Jesus learned

  60. that the Pharisees took notice of Jesus' increasing popularity.

  61. Now that's an ominous sign

  62. because the Pharisees are already watching John the Baptist

  63. because he was so popular

  64. and well-regarded by the people.

  65. And so they saw him as a threat

  66. to their own authority and popularity.

  67. And they're noticing now

  68. that Jesus is attracting even more people

  69. than John the Baptist.

  70. So they feel threatened.

  71. And so Jesus perceiving this

  72. and recognizing that his hour,

  73. the hour of his death is not yet,

  74. doesn't want to prematurely end his ministry.

  75. So he moves away from that place.

  76. He had already had a conflict

  77. with the Pharisees and the religious rulers

  78. in chapter 2 at the temple complex.

  79. So he leaves Judea and departs again for Galilee,

  80. he says in verses 3 and 4.

  81. And in order to do that,

  82. he had to pass through Samaria.

  83. That's the normal route that you go through.

  84. And it says in verse 6

  85. that Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey,

  86. was sitting beside the well.

  87. It was about the sixth hour.

  88. And that's not an extraneous detail

  89. because Jews count their hours

  90. beginning with, not at midnight,

  91. but beginning with sunrise.

  92. So if you count from sunrise,

  93. this is probably approximately noon,

  94. which is the hottest part of the day.

  95. So Jesus, understandably,

  96. is wary from his journey.

  97. He's tired and he's thirsty

  98. as he sits under the heat of the sun.

  99. And then, so he stops because he's thirsty

  100. and he rests at the well.

  101. And this woman is there.

  102. So read verses 7 to 9 with me.

  103. A woman from Samaria came to draw water

  104. and Jesus said to her,

  105. Give me a drink.

  106. For his disciples had gone away

  107. into the city to buy food.

  108. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  109. How is it that you, a Jew,

  110. ask for a drink from me,

  111. a woman of Samaria?

  112. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  113. A woman from Samaria.

  114. That's a significant detail

  115. because as it tells us in verse 9,

  116. Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  117. That's a slightly erroneous translation.

  118. It doesn't actually mean

  119. that the Jews have no dealings with Samaritans

  120. because as you see in verse 8,

  121. the Jesus' disciples are dealing with Samaritans.

  122. They're going into a Samaritan city

  123. and they're buying food.

  124. So it's not saying that the Jews

  125. have no dealings with Samaritans,

  126. but the word that means have dealing with

  127. is more commonly translated

  128. as to use together with.

  129. So it's referring to using the same utensils,

  130. using the same vessels.

  131. So here it better be translated as

  132. Jews do not use the same cups

  133. or vessels with Samaritans

  134. because they believe that

  135. that caused ritual impurity.

  136. So they didn't want to do that.

  137. And in order to understand

  138. this animosity, hostility

  139. between Jews and Samaritans,

  140. we have to delve a little bit

  141. into the history of Israel.

  142. And I'll be brief in this,

  143. but Israel was divided into two kingdoms,

  144. the northern kingdom

  145. and the southern kingdom.

  146. And the northern kingdom

  147. was invaded by the Assyrian kingdom.

  148. And they defeated Israel

  149. and then they exiled all Jews

  150. basically of any kind of substance

  151. or means or importance

  152. to their country, their kingdom.

  153. And after having exiled them,

  154. they settled, resettled the land

  155. with their own people,

  156. with foreigners.

  157. This was about 722 BC.

  158. Second Kings talks about this

  159. in chapters 17 and 18.

  160. And so because of that,

  161. after these foreigners came in,

  162. the Jews that remained,

  163. they're intermarried with them

  164. and produced what would be

  165. basically a syncretized religion,

  166. a syncretistic religion,

  167. not a true Judaism,

  168. not a true faith in God,

  169. but a syncretized,

  170. it's an intermixed religion.

  171. So from this,

  172. because of this,

  173. Jews saw Samaritans

  174. not only as political rebels,

  175. people who basically paid allegiance

  176. to the Assyrian kingdom,

  177. but also as racial half-breeds

  178. because they are not pure Jews.

  179. And then thirdly,

  180. also as religious outcasts

  181. because they were not holding

  182. to the true religion of the Jews.

  183. So there is religious,

  184. political,

  185. and racial tension,

  186. hostility, animosity.

  187. I mean,

  188. that tension that existed

  189. between them,

  190. you know,

  191. makes the divisiveness

  192. of the current presidential election

  193. like, you know,

  194. child's play, right?

  195. This is a serious animosity.

  196. And the Samaritans

  197. only accepted the Pentateuch,

  198. which is the first five books

  199. of the Bible as scripture.

  200. And so that led to different ideas

  201. about how worship should happen.

  202. And the chief among the differences

  203. was where worship should take place.

  204. And the Jews believed

  205. that the temple in Jerusalem

  206. was the place

  207. where they ought to worship.

  208. But because the Samaritans

  209. didn't accept the portions

  210. of scripture that talked about that,

  211. they believed that they were

  212. supposed to worship God

  213. on Mount Gerizim.

  214. And that there,

  215. they erected their own rival temple

  216. around 400 BC.

  217. And then that temple,

  218. just about two centuries later,

  219. was destroyed by a Jewish ruler.

  220. So there's a lot of conflict

  221. and tension going on.

  222. And so she's shocked

  223. that it's remarkable

  224. that Jesus is asking

  225. the Samaritan woman for a drink.

  226. And in order to do so,

  227. he would also have to share

  228. the same vessel,

  229. same cup.

  230. And not only is Jesus asking

  231. for a drink from a Samaritan,

  232. he's also asking for a drink

  233. from a Samaritan woman.

  234. Within a generation of Jesus' life,

  235. Jewish leaders would codify a law

  236. in the Mishnah

  237. that reflected long-standing

  238. popular sentiment

  239. and prejudice

  240. towards Samaritan woman

  241. in particular.

  242. And in fact,

  243. it says this,

  244. it's a quote,

  245. the daughters of the Samaritans

  246. are menstruants

  247. from their cradle

  248. and therefore in a perpetual state

  249. of ceremonial uncleanness.

  250. So this is what they believed.

  251. Jesus has no regard

  252. for the sexism of his day.

  253. Right?

  254. And this Samaritan woman

  255. who had apparently grown accustomed

  256. to being ignored

  257. and overlooked

  258. and disrespected

  259. is shocked that Jesus

  260. would approach her

  261. and speak to her

  262. and ask her for a drink.

  263. But she doesn't realize

  264. that instead of being

  265. ceremonially defiled

  266. by contact with Samaritans,

  267. Jesus purifies

  268. everything he touches,

  269. everyone he comes

  270. into contact with.

  271. But at this point,

  272. she doesn't know this,

  273. so she's probably really

  274. thinking to herself,

  275. man,

  276. this man must be

  277. really parched.

  278. He must be desperately thirsty,

  279. really dying of thirst.

  280. if he's asking me,

  281. a Samaritan woman,

  282. for a drink.

  283. Yet,

  284. in the next response of Jesus,

  285. we see that him

  286. reverse this situation

  287. and to show her

  288. not that she,

  289. he's not the one

  290. that really needs a drink,

  291. but rather she's the one

  292. that desperately needs

  293. a drink of a different kind.

  294. So verse 10,

  295. Jesus says to her,

  296. if you knew the gift of God

  297. and who it is

  298. that is saying to you,

  299. give me a drink,

  300. you would have asked him

  301. and he would have given you

  302. living water.

  303. The woman was at first shocked

  304. that Jesus would approach her,

  305. speak to her.

  306. Now she's confused,

  307. right?

  308. So she replies

  309. in verses 11 to 12,

  310. Sir,

  311. you have nothing

  312. to draw water with

  313. and the well is deep.

  314. Where do you get

  315. that living water?

  316. Are you greater

  317. than our father Jacob?

  318. He gave us the well

  319. and drank from it himself,

  320. as did his sons

  321. and his livestock.

  322. So her logic

  323. is basically this,

  324. even the great patriarch Jacob

  325. had to dig his own well

  326. in order to provide water

  327. for himself and his family.

  328. And who are you,

  329. basically,

  330. to be able to provide

  331. this living water

  332. when you have nothing

  333. to draw water with?

  334. So the confusion

  335. might be a little bit

  336. difficult to understand for us

  337. because right away

  338. when we hear living water,

  339. we think of spiritual living water.

  340. But living water,

  341. the same phrase,

  342. is used to refer

  343. to fresh running water

  344. in the language

  345. of these people.

  346. So she's probably thinking

  347. like fresh running water,

  348. so that's why she's confused.

  349. And so Jesus explains,

  350. tries to explain this to her.

  351. And it's typical

  352. in the Gospel of John

  353. to have these double meanings,

  354. right,

  355. of a deeper spiritual meaning

  356. that underlies

  357. the physical meaning,

  358. the concrete meaning

  359. at the top.

  360. So the water

  361. that Jesus has in mind,

  362. of course,

  363. is not physical water.

  364. So he responds

  365. in verses 13 to 14.

  366. Everyone who drinks

  367. of this water

  368. will be thirsty again,

  369. but whoever drinks

  370. of the water

  371. that I will give him

  372. will never be thirsty again.

  373. The water that I will give him

  374. will become in him

  375. a spring of water

  376. welling up

  377. to eternal life.

  378. And the background

  379. for this living water

  380. is the Old Testament.

  381. In Jeremiah 2.13,

  382. God had declared

  383. to an idolatrous people,

  384. his own people

  385. who had been idolatrous.

  386. My people have committed

  387. two evils.

  388. They have forsaken me,

  389. the fountain of living waters,

  390. and hewed out cisterns

  391. for themselves,

  392. broken cisterns

  393. that can hold no water.

  394. So God says

  395. that he himself

  396. is the fountain

  397. of living water.

  398. He is the source of life.

  399. He is the source

  400. of this living water,

  401. just an ending supply

  402. of fresh running water

  403. for his people.

  404. But instead of him,

  405. his people have forsaken him

  406. and they've turned

  407. to cisterns,

  408. the stagnant water

  409. of cisterns.

  410. And not just a cistern,

  411. but a broken cistern

  412. that can't even hold water.

  413. That's the idols

  414. of the nations

  415. that Israelites

  416. were going after.

  417. And that language

  418. of living water

  419. is picked up

  420. by the other prophets

  421. and it really comes

  422. to a climax

  423. in Isaiah 55

  424. where God invites

  425. his people,

  426. come,

  427. everyone who thirsts,

  428. come to the waters

  429. that your soul

  430. may live.

  431. That's the living water

  432. that he has in view

  433. that wells up

  434. into eternal life.

  435. It's not water

  436. to parch our thirst,

  437. it's to slake our thirst,

  438. but it's water

  439. for the withered

  440. and dried soul.

  441. But the Samaritan woman

  442. still misunderstands

  443. Jesus.

  444. And she thinks

  445. that he's offering her

  446. some kind of miracle water

  447. that's going to permanently

  448. satisfy her physical thirst.

  449. So she says in verse 15,

  450. Sir, give me this water

  451. so that I will not be thirsty

  452. or have to come here

  453. to draw water.

  454. And it's understandable, right?

  455. I mean,

  456. if you could find such water,

  457. I would want some too.

  458. I'd never have to drink again,

  459. never have to look

  460. for a water fountain again,

  461. never have to give up

  462. your water

  463. at the airport again,

  464. and you never have

  465. to drink again, right?

  466. So she wants it.

  467. But this is,

  468. this is a problem

  469. because what Jesus

  470. is offering

  471. is so much better

  472. than that miracle

  473. of physical water.

  474. She's settling here

  475. for water

  476. that will merely

  477. quench her physical thirst

  478. when Jesus is offering

  479. something that's far greater.

  480. And so often,

  481. that's how we respond

  482. to God's grace,

  483. his offer

  484. that he gives us.

  485. And C.S. Lewis

  486. puts it this way

  487. in his famous essay,

  488. The Weight of Glory.

  489. If we consider

  490. the unblushing promises

  491. of reward

  492. and the staggering nature

  493. of the rewards

  494. promised in the Gospels,

  495. it would seem

  496. that our Lord

  497. finds our desires

  498. not too strong,

  499. but too weak.

  500. We are half-hearted creatures,

  501. fooling about

  502. with drink and sex

  503. and ambition

  504. when infinite joy

  505. is offered us.

  506. like an ignorant child

  507. who wants to go on

  508. making mud pies

  509. in a slum

  510. because he cannot

  511. imagine what is meant

  512. by the offer

  513. of a holiday

  514. at the sea.

  515. We are far

  516. too easily

  517. pleased.

  518. The problem

  519. of the Smyrton Movement,

  520. our problem,

  521. is not that our desire

  522. for joy and pleasure

  523. is too strong.

  524. That's not why

  525. we neglect God.

  526. We neglect him

  527. because

  528. and seek satisfaction

  529. and other things

  530. because our desire

  531. for joy and pleasure

  532. is too weak.

  533. We are far

  534. too easily pleased.

  535. When God

  536. offers us

  537. supreme joy,

  538. he offers us

  539. supreme satisfaction,

  540. life to the full,

  541. abundant life,

  542. instead we settle

  543. for lesser joys,

  544. lesser pleasures,

  545. lesser satisfaction,

  546. a lesser life.

  547. And I asked you

  548. in the beginning

  549. to think about

  550. what your greatest

  551. unfulfilled desire

  552. might be.

  553. And if that's

  554. anything other

  555. than perfect,

  556. uninterrupted communion

  557. with our God,

  558. then we're settling

  559. for something less

  560. than what he intends

  561. for us.

  562. So let's not settle

  563. for water

  564. when living water

  565. is offered to us

  566. or for wealth

  567. that we can't keep

  568. beyond death

  569. when eternal treasures

  570. are offered to us.

  571. Let's not settle

  572. for love

  573. and prestige

  574. of this world,

  575. of men,

  576. when eternal love

  577. and esteem

  578. of our heavenly Father

  579. is offered

  580. to us.

  581. So Christ offers

  582. us eternal life.

  583. This is the promise

  584. of eternal life.

  585. My first point,

  586. but what must we do

  587. to attain

  588. eternal life?

  589. And that's

  590. what Jesus now

  591. turns to,

  592. the condition

  593. for the eternal life.

  594. Look with me

  595. verses 16

  596. to 18.

  597. So Jesus sees

  598. that the woman

  599. has still

  600. misunderstood him

  601. yet again.

  602. So Jesus changes

  603. course

  604. and now he

  605. peels back

  606. the layers

  607. of this woman's life

  608. to expose

  609. the sin

  610. and the past

  611. that she's hiding

  612. in order to

  613. expose her true need

  614. and heal her shame.

  615. So look at verse 16.

  616. He tells her

  617. abruptly,

  618. go,

  619. call your husband

  620. and come here.

  621. And the woman

  622. responds

  623. in a kind of

  624. curt,

  625. defensive manner.

  626. She says in verse 17,

  627. I have no husband.

  628. Well,

  629. she's evading

  630. Jesus' command here

  631. because her statement

  632. that she has no husband

  633. is formally true

  634. but it really doesn't

  635. reveal half the truth

  636. because she's been married

  637. five times.

  638. She's had

  639. five husbands.

  640. So Jesus responds

  641. in verses 17 to 18,

  642. you are right

  643. in saying

  644. I have no husband

  645. for you have had

  646. five husbands

  647. and the one you now have

  648. is not your husband.

  649. What you have said

  650. is true.

  651. Jesus gets

  652. right to the heart

  653. of the woman

  654. need

  655. because we learn here

  656. not only was this woman

  657. a Samaritan

  658. but she was also

  659. promiscuous.

  660. The claim that she

  661. has no husband

  662. is not true.

  663. She's been married

  664. to five husbands

  665. which means

  666. either she got divorced

  667. or the husband's

  668. passed away.

  669. There's probably

  670. a mix of both in there

  671. and so she is seen

  672. by her community

  673. people as

  674. a woman

  675. with failed marriages

  676. five times

  677. and not only that

  678. she's not cohabiting

  679. with another man

  680. who is not even

  681. her husband

  682. which is

  683. condemned

  684. throughout

  685. the Old Testament.

  686. So Jesus

  687. gently pushes back

  688. the curtain

  689. to reveal this

  690. and this is

  691. the real reason

  692. we find

  693. now that

  694. she came

  695. to the well

  696. alone

  697. because it was

  698. typical of the time

  699. for the woman

  700. to come together

  701. in groups

  702. to the well

  703. to keep company

  704. and for safety

  705. but she comes

  706. in isolation

  707. she comes alone

  708. and this

  709. was the reason

  710. why she came

  711. at the sixth hour

  712. at the hottest part

  713. of the day

  714. noon

  715. when typically

  716. women would come

  717. to draw water

  718. in the morning

  719. or in the later afternoon

  720. in the cool of the day

  721. she comes

  722. at the hottest part

  723. of the day

  724. to avoid

  725. being seen

  726. avoid

  727. in isolation

  728. in shame

  729. and other women

  730. in the community

  731. no doubt

  732. saw her

  733. as a threat

  734. to their own marriages

  735. because here's this woman

  736. who's now living

  737. with a man

  738. who's not her husband

  739. and all the other husbands

  740. and as the women

  741. look on their own husbands

  742. they see her

  743. as a threat

  744. because they see

  745. that she's available

  746. they see that she's

  747. promiscuous

  748. so she is shunned

  749. she's a pariah

  750. an outcast

  751. and I think

  752. John

  753. intentionally

  754. juxtaposes

  755. the encounter

  756. of Jesus

  757. with Nicodemus

  758. and the Samaritan woman

  759. because Nicodemus

  760. was learned

  761. he was influential

  762. respected

  763. and theologically

  764. orthodox

  765. right

  766. he knew all

  767. the right answers

  768. the Samaritan

  769. was unschooled

  770. without any influence

  771. despised

  772. and theologically

  773. heterodox

  774. Nicodemus

  775. was a man

  776. a Jew

  777. and a ruler

  778. and a ruler

  779. among them

  780. the Samaritan

  781. was a woman

  782. she was a Samaritan

  783. and a moral

  784. outcast

  785. and they both

  786. needed Jesus

  787. they both

  788. received Jesus'

  789. gracious invitation

  790. they both

  791. were objects

  792. of God's love

  793. and mercy

  794. and Jesus'

  795. insight into

  796. this woman's

  797. life

  798. so touches

  799. her to the

  800. very core

  801. later in

  802. verse 29

  803. she tells

  804. people

  805. come see

  806. a man

  807. who told

  808. me

  809. all that

  810. I ever

  811. did

  812. can this

  813. be the

  814. Christ

  815. but at this

  816. point

  817. she's not

  818. won over yet

  819. right

  820. because

  821. with her

  822. past

  823. and present

  824. sins

  825. all of a

  826. sudden

  827. exposed

  828. before this

  829. stranger

  830. that she

  831. just met

  832. she abruptly

  833. changes

  834. subject

  835. and she

  836. brings up

  837. the point

  838. of theological

  839. contention

  840. between Jews

  841. and Samaritans

  842. perhaps that's

  843. just a way

  844. of evading

  845. this

  846. and trying

  847. to reestablish

  848. some kind

  849. of distance

  850. between her

  851. and Jesus

  852. or maybe

  853. that's her

  854. way of

  855. trying to

  856. show that

  857. she does

  858. have some

  859. religious

  860. sensibilities

  861. she knows

  862. what's going

  863. on

  864. and so

  865. she asks

  866. this question

  867. in verses

  868. 19 and 20

  869. sir I

  870. perceive

  871. that you

  872. are a

  873. prophet

  874. our fathers

  875. worshipped

  876. on this

  877. mountain

  878. but you

  879. say

  880. that in

  881. Jerusalem

  882. is a

  883. place

  884. where people

  885. ought to

  886. worship

  887. now but

  888. Jesus

  889. doesn't let

  890. her derail

  891. this

  892. conversation

  893. and she

  894. he does

  895. answer

  896. her question

  897. he does

  898. disabuse

  899. her of

  900. her false

  901. notions

  902. because

  903. the salvation

  904. is from

  905. the Jews

  906. right

  907. because the

  908. Samaritans

  909. rejected the

  910. rest of

  911. God's

  912. revelation

  913. in the

  914. Old Testament

  915. they did

  916. not have

  917. a proper

  918. view of

  919. God

  920. did not

  921. know

  922. God

  923. as they

  924. ought to

  925. while the

  926. Jews

  927. did

  928. however

  929. imperfect

  930. their

  931. worship

  932. was

  933. however

  934. misguided

  935. their

  936. worship

  937. was

  938. Jews

  939. did

  940. know

  941. who

  942. God

  943. was

  944. so

  945. he

  946. says

  947. in

  948. verses

  949. 21 and 22

  950. woman

  951. believe me

  952. the hour is

  953. coming when

  954. neither on this

  955. mountain nor in

  956. Jerusalem will you

  957. worship the

  958. father

  959. you worship what

  960. you do not

  961. know

  962. we worship what

  963. we know

  964. for salvation

  965. is from

  966. the Jews

  967. but notice

  968. that he

  969. prefaces that

  970. statement by

  971. first saying

  972. that there's a

  973. new age that

  974. is coming

  975. when this

  976. debate about

  977. the proper

  978. locale for

  979. worship

  980. will not

  981. matter

  982. anymore

  983. the Jews

  984. who had a

  985. privileged status

  986. before God

  987. up to this

  988. point

  989. that will no

  990. longer be the

  991. case

  992. the worship

  993. will be

  994. open

  995. that will be

  996. given

  997. before all

  998. nations

  999. for all

  1000. peoples

  1001. and so

  1002. Jesus says

  1003. the hour is

  1004. coming when

  1005. neither on this

  1006. mountain nor

  1007. in Jerusalem

  1008. will you

  1009. worship

  1010. the father

  1011. and he

  1012. continues

  1013. verse 23

  1014. and 24

  1015. read with

  1016. me

  1017. the hour

  1018. is coming

  1019. and is

  1020. now here

  1021. when the

  1022. true

  1023. worshipers

  1024. will worship

  1025. the father

  1026. in spirit

  1027. and truth

  1028. for the

  1029. father is

  1030. seeking such

  1031. people to

  1032. worship him

  1033. God is

  1034. spirit

  1035. and those

  1036. who worship

  1037. him must

  1038. worship in

  1039. spirit

  1040. and truth

  1041. as those

  1042. of you who

  1043. have been

  1044. with us

  1045. since the

  1046. beginning of

  1047. our series

  1048. the gospel

  1049. of John

  1050. know by

  1051. now

  1052. whenever he

  1053. says

  1054. the hour

  1055. that's kind

  1056. of cue

  1057. for the

  1058. hour of

  1059. Jesus

  1060. death

  1061. because

  1062. when the

  1063. word is

  1064. used in

  1065. an unqualified

  1066. way in

  1067. the gospel

  1068. of John

  1069. it always

  1070. refers to

  1071. Jesus'

  1072. death

  1073. resurrection

  1074. and ascension

  1075. that complex

  1076. of events

  1077. that leads

  1078. to Christ's

  1079. exaltation

  1080. and the

  1081. nations

  1082. coming to

  1083. him

  1084. so that's

  1085. what he's

  1086. talking about

  1087. and this

  1088. oxymoron here

  1089. that the

  1090. hour is

  1091. coming

  1092. and is

  1093. now here

  1094. already

  1095. powerfully

  1096. demonstrates

  1097. that this

  1098. new age

  1099. has decisively

  1100. dawned

  1101. but waits

  1102. to be

  1103. consummated

  1104. because the

  1105. reason

  1106. for that

  1107. is because

  1108. Jesus is

  1109. the one

  1110. who brings

  1111. about this

  1112. new age

  1113. and Jesus

  1114. is already

  1115. here

  1116. it's as if

  1117. if you take

  1118. an hourglass

  1119. and it's been

  1120. turned over

  1121. and set down

  1122. decisively

  1123. and the sand

  1124. has begun

  1125. to trickle

  1126. down

  1127. and it's only

  1128. a matter of

  1129. time before

  1130. the hour

  1131. comes in

  1132. fullness

  1133. right

  1134. indeed the hour

  1135. is already

  1136. in a very real

  1137. sense

  1138. here

  1139. so the hour

  1140. is coming

  1141. and is now

  1142. here

  1143. it's present

  1144. in Jesus

  1145. and in

  1146. this new

  1147. age

  1148. the true

  1149. worshippers

  1150. will not

  1151. be Jews

  1152. or Samaritans

  1153. but the true

  1154. worshippers

  1155. will be all

  1156. those who

  1157. worship the

  1158. father in

  1159. spirit

  1160. and truth

  1161. and the

  1162. reason that

  1163. he gives

  1164. for that

  1165. is that

  1166. God is

  1167. spirit

  1168. what does

  1169. that mean

  1170. it means

  1171. that

  1172. I mean

  1173. it doesn't

  1174. mean that

  1175. God is

  1176. one of the

  1177. many

  1178. spirits

  1179. it means

  1180. it's talking

  1181. about

  1182. his

  1183. nature

  1184. unlike

  1185. us

  1186. whose

  1187. flesh

  1188. God

  1189. is spirit

  1190. which means

  1191. that God

  1192. is not

  1193. confined

  1194. to time

  1195. space

  1196. continuum

  1197. he's not

  1198. confined

  1199. like we

  1200. are

  1201. it also

  1202. means

  1203. that he

  1204. doesn't

  1205. change

  1206. or decay

  1207. as we

  1208. do

  1209. because he's

  1210. spirit

  1211. he's not

  1212. flesh

  1213. it means

  1214. that God

  1215. is powerful

  1216. not weak

  1217. like flesh

  1218. because he

  1219. is spirit

  1220. because

  1221. according to

  1222. the Bible

  1223. spirit

  1224. is a

  1225. stronger

  1226. reality

  1227. than

  1228. materiality

  1229. and that's

  1230. sometimes

  1231. we don't

  1232. think about

  1233. it that

  1234. way

  1235. we think

  1236. things

  1237. you can

  1238. see

  1239. feel

  1240. and touch

  1241. that's

  1242. more

  1243. real

  1244. to us

  1245. than

  1246. spiritual

  1247. things

  1248. but the

  1249. Bible

  1250. turns

  1251. that

  1252. view

  1253. upside

  1254. down

  1255. in

  1256. Isaiah

  1257. 31

  1258. he says

  1259. God

  1260. says to

  1261. this

  1262. to his

  1263. people

  1264. woe to

  1265. those

  1266. who go

  1267. down

  1268. to Egypt

  1269. for help

  1270. and rely

  1271. on horses

  1272. who trust

  1273. in chariots

  1274. because they

  1275. are many

  1276. and in

  1277. horsemen

  1278. because they

  1279. are very

  1280. strong

  1281. but do

  1282. not look

  1283. to the

  1284. holy

  1285. one

  1286. of Israel

  1287. or consult

  1288. the Lord

  1289. and then

  1290. he says

  1291. the reason

  1292. for that

  1293. is the

  1294. Egyptians

  1295. are man

  1296. and not

  1297. God

  1298. and their

  1299. horses

  1300. are flesh

  1301. and not

  1302. spirit

  1303. and when

  1304. the Lord

  1305. stretches

  1306. out his

  1307. hand

  1308. the helper

  1309. will stumble

  1310. and he

  1311. was helped

  1312. will fall

  1313. and they

  1314. will all

  1315. perish

  1316. together

  1317. the spiritual

  1318. reality

  1319. is more

  1320. real

  1321. than

  1322. material

  1323. reality

  1324. and the

  1325. spirit

  1326. is more

  1327. permanent

  1328. and powerful

  1329. than flesh

  1330. God

  1331. is spirit

  1332. and that's

  1333. why true

  1334. worshipers

  1335. must worship

  1336. in spirit

  1337. and truth

  1338. and what

  1339. does that

  1340. mean

  1341. what's spirit

  1342. and truth

  1343. and that

  1344. should really

  1345. have the

  1346. definite article

  1347. before the

  1348. word spirit

  1349. it should

  1350. say in

  1351. the

  1352. spirit

  1353. the definite

  1354. article

  1355. isn't there

  1356. in the

  1357. original text

  1358. in the

  1359. Greek

  1360. but that's

  1361. usually the

  1362. case

  1363. even when

  1364. the noun

  1365. is definite

  1366. if the

  1367. noun

  1368. is an

  1369. object

  1370. of a

  1371. preposition

  1372. and especially

  1373. if it's

  1374. an abstract

  1375. noun

  1376. like truth

  1377. and spirit

  1378. so it's

  1379. by grammatical

  1380. rule

  1381. it's the

  1382. usual way

  1383. you should

  1384. translate this

  1385. is to say

  1386. in the

  1387. spirit

  1388. and the

  1389. truth

  1390. not in

  1391. spirit

  1392. and truth

  1393. and you

  1394. see this

  1395. confirmed in

  1396. John chapter

    John 3:5

  1397. 3 verse

  1398. 5 of the

  1399. ESV

  1400. same bible

  1401. he says

  1402. unless one

  1403. is born

  1404. of water

  1405. and the

  1406. spirit

  1407. he cannot

  1408. enter the

  1409. kingdom of

  1410. God

  1411. same word

  1412. the article

  1413. is not

  1414. there either

  1415. but the

  1416. translators

  1417. here render

  1418. that correctly

  1419. they put

  1420. the

  1421. before the

  1422. spirit

  1423. so what

  1424. that means

  1425. then

  1426. what

  1427. Jesus

  1428. is referring

  1429. to

  1430. here is

  1431. the

  1432. holy

  1433. spirit

  1434. the spirit

  1435. the spirit

  1436. of God

  1437. the very

  1438. presence

  1439. of God

  1440. he is the

  1441. one that

  1442. mediates

  1443. our worship

  1444. he is the

  1445. one through

  1446. whom we

  1447. must worship

  1448. in the

  1449. spirit

  1450. of God

  1451. but not

  1452. just in

  1453. spirit

  1454. but the

  1455. true

  1456. worshipers

  1457. also

  1458. worship

  1459. the

  1460. father

  1461. in

  1462. truth

  1463. this

  1464. also

  1465. refers

  1466. to a

  1467. specific

  1468. definite

  1469. truth

  1470. the

  1471. truth

  1472. and in

  1473. the

  1474. context

  1475. of the

  1476. gospel

  1477. of John

  1478. this is

  1479. very clear

  1480. because

  1481. in

  1482. John 6

  1483. Jesus

  1484. says

  1485. that he

  1486. is the

  1487. true

  1488. bread

  1489. in

  1490. chapter

  1491. 10

  1492. he says

  1493. that he

  1494. is the

  1495. true

  1496. shepherd

  1497. chapter

  1498. 10

  1499. and 14

  1500. he says

  1501. that he

  1502. is the

  1503. true

  1504. son

  1505. and in

  1506. chapter

  1507. 11

  1508. he says

  1509. he is the

  1510. true

  1511. resurrection

  1512. and the

  1513. life

  1514. in fact

  1515. John 15

  1516. he says

  1517. he is the

  1518. true

  1519. vine

  1520. given this

  1521. context

  1522. in the

  1523. gospel

  1524. of John

  1525. truth

  1526. can be

  1527. nothing

  1528. other than

  1529. Jesus

  1530. Christ

  1531. himself

  1532. the

  1533. message

  1534. he

  1535. embodies

  1536. the

  1537. power

  1538. that he

  1539. imparts

  1540. as

  1541. the

  1542. son

  1543. of

  1544. God

  1545. and

  1546. he

  1547. makes

  1548. this

  1549. explicit

  1550. in

  1551. John

    John 14:6

  1552. chapter

  1553. 14

  1554. verse

  1555. 6

  1556. he says

  1557. I am

  1558. the

  1559. way

  1560. and

  1561. the

  1562. truth

  1563. and

  1564. the

  1565. life

  1566. no

  1567. one

  1568. comes

  1569. to

  1570. the

  1571. father

  1572. except

  1573. through

  1574. me

  1575. so

  1576. to

  1577. worship

  1578. in

  1579. the

  1580. truth

  1581. is

  1582. to

  1583. approach

  1584. and

  1585. worship

  1586. the

  1587. father

  1588. by

  1589. the

  1590. means

  1591. of

  1592. Christ

  1593. according

  1594. to

  1595. the

  1596. revelation

  1597. of

  1598. Christ

  1599. through

  1600. Christ

  1601. that's

  1602. what

  1603. it

  1604. means

  1605. for

  1606. us

  1607. to

  1608. worship

  1609. God

  1610. in

  1611. spirit

  1612. and

  1613. truth

  1614. because

  1615. Jesus

  1616. who

  1617. replaces

  1618. the

  1619. old

  1620. temple

  1621. as we

  1622. saw

  1623. in

  1624. chapter

  1625. 2

  1626. is

  1627. now

  1628. the

  1629. new

  1630. focal

  1631. point

  1632. of

  1633. worship

  1634. he

  1635. is

  1636. the

  1637. one

  1638. through

  1639. whom

  1640. we

  1641. worship

  1642. and

  1643. that's

  1644. why

  1645. when

  1646. Jesus

  1647. tells

  1648. this

  1649. to

  1650. the

  1651. Samaritan

  1652. woman

  1653. she

  1654. says

  1655. in

  1656. verse

  1657. 25

  1658. I

  1659. I

  1660. I

  1661. I

  1662. know

  1663. that

  1664. Messiah

  1665. is

  1666. coming

  1667. he

  1668. was

  1669. called

  1670. Christ

  1671. when

  1672. he

  1673. comes

  1674. he

  1675. will

  1676. tell

  1677. us

  1678. all

  1679. things

  1680. she

  1681. has

  1682. enough

  1683. knowledge

  1684. of

  1685. the

  1686. messianic

  1687. expectations

  1688. Jewish

  1689. messianic

  1690. expectations

  1691. know

  1692. that

  1693. this

  1694. kind

  1695. of

  1696. change

  1697. cosmic

  1698. change

  1699. this

  1700. kind

  1701. of

  1702. new

  1703. age

  1704. could

  1705. only

  1706. come

  1707. when

  1708. the

  1709. Messiah

  1710. comes

  1711. when

  1712. the

  1713. promised

  1714. Christ

  1715. comes

  1716. so

  1717. that's

  1718. why

  1719. she

  1720. says

  1721. this

  1722. to

  1723. him

  1724. and

  1725. Jesus

  1726. says

  1727. something

  1728. really

  1729. remarkable

  1730. he

  1731. turns

  1732. to

  1733. her

  1734. I

  1735. who

  1736. speak

  1737. to

  1738. you

  1739. am

  1740. he

  1741. I

  1742. who

  1743. speak

  1744. to

  1745. you

  1746. am

  1747. he

  1748. Jesus

  1749. embodies

  1750. and

  1751. imparts

  1752. to us

  1753. the

  1754. very

  1755. truth

  1756. of

  1757. God

  1758. the

  1759. saving

  1760. purposes

  1761. of

  1762. God

  1763. and

  1764. that's

  1765. in

  1766. the

  1767. gospel

  1768. of

  1769. Jesus

  1770. Christ

  1771. that

  1772. we

  1773. proclaim

  1774. week

  1775. in

  1776. and

  1777. week

  1778. out

  1779. because

  1780. when

  1781. humanity

  1782. sinned

  1783. against

  1784. God

  1785. by

  1786. doubting

  1787. his

  1788. promises

  1789. and

  1790. violating

  1791. and

  1792. obscured

  1793. the

  1794. truth

  1795. of

  1796. God

  1797. and

  1798. a

  1799. dark

  1800. fog

  1801. dawned

  1802. it

  1803. descended

  1804. upon

  1805. the

  1806. earth

  1807. upon

  1808. the

  1809. world

  1810. and

  1811. we

  1812. became

  1813. cloaked

  1814. in

  1815. ignorance

  1816. but

  1817. God

  1818. sends

  1819. the

  1820. son

  1821. who

  1822. is

  1823. the

  1824. light

  1825. of

  1826. the

  1827. world

  1828. John

  1829. says

  1830. he

  1831. enlightens

  1832. us

  1833. so

  1834. that

  1835. we

  1836. can

  1837. see

  1838. in

  1839. the

  1840. darkness

  1841. he

  1842. comes

  1843. as

  1844. the

  1845. truth

  1846. to

  1847. point

  1848. us

  1849. in

  1850. the

  1851. right

  1852. direction

  1853. to

  1854. show

  1855. us

  1856. the

  1857. way

  1858. to

  1859. God

  1860. and

  1861. he

  1862. does

  1863. this

  1864. ultimately

  1865. in

  1866. a

  1867. climactic

  1868. way

  1869. on

  1870. the

  1871. cross

  1872. when

  1873. he

  1874. dies

  1875. for

  1876. our

  1877. sins

  1878. because

  1879. we

  1880. cannot

  1881. make

  1882. our

  1883. own

  1884. way

  1885. to

  1886. God

  1887. we

  1888. cannot

  1889. find

  1890. our

  1891. own

  1892. way

  1893. to

  1894. God

  1895. but

  1896. Christ

  1897. shows

  1898. us

  1899. the

  1900. way

  1901. when

  1902. he

  1903. dies

  1904. and

  1905. makes

  1906. that

  1907. way

  1908. paves

  1909. that

  1910. path

  1911. by

  1912. paying

  1913. the

  1914. penalty

  1915. of

  1916. our

  1917. sins

  1918. and

  1919. bringing

  1920. us

  1921. lifting

  1922. us

  1923. with

  1924. him

  1925. to

  1926. have

  1927. fellowship

  1928. with

  1929. the

  1930. father

  1931. that's

  1932. why

  1933. if

  1934. you

  1935. believe

  1936. it

  1937. the

  1938. lowliest

  1939. among

  1940. us

  1941. can

  1942. have

  1943. communion

  1944. with

  1945. the

  1946. most

  1947. high

  1948. God

  1949. that's

  1950. why

  1951. if

  1952. we

  1953. believe

  1954. it

  1955. the

  1956. most

  1957. sinful

  1958. among

  1959. us

  1960. like

  1961. this

  1962. Samaritan

  1963. woman

  1964. can

  1965. have

  1966. communion

  1967. with

  1968. the

  1969. most

  1970. holy

  1971. God

  1972. we

  1973. can

  1974. enjoy

  1975. the

  1976. eternal

  1977. life

  1978. we

  1979. can

  1980. enjoy

  1981. eternal

  1982. life

  1983. through

  1984. the

  1985. spirit

  1986. and

  1987. truth

  1988. of

  1989. Jesus

  1990. Christ

  1991. and

  1992. that

  1993. is

  1994. the

  1995. most

  1996. beautiful

  1997. and

  1998. wonderful

  1999. truth

  2000. about

  2001. Christian

  2002. worship

  2003. because

  2004. Christian

  2005. worship

  2006. is

  2007. Trinitarian

  2008. we

  2009. worship

  2010. the

  2011. father

  2012. in

  2013. the

  2014. son

  2015. through

  2016. the

  2017. Holy

  2018. Spirit

  2019. as

  2020. a

  2021. Scottish

  2022. theologian

  2023. James

  2024. Torrance

  2025. puts it

  2026. this way

  2027. he says

  2028. Christian

  2029. worship

  2030. is the

  2031. gift

  2032. of

  2033. participating

  2034. through

  2035. the

  2036. spirit

  2037. in

  2038. the

  2039. incarnate

  2040. son's

  2041. communion

  2042. with

  2043. the

  2044. father

  2045. so

  2046. when

  2047. we

  2048. worship

  2049. it's

  2050. not

  2051. just

  2052. a

  2053. kind

  2054. of

  2055. a

  2056. distant

  2057. detached

  2058. transaction

  2059. that

  2060. we're

  2061. being

  2062. lifted

  2063. up

  2064. and

  2065. wrapped

  2066. up

  2067. into

  2068. the

  2069. very

  2070. life

  2071. and

  2072. love

  2073. of

  2074. the

  2075. triune

  2076. God

  2077. that's

  2078. what

  2079. it

  2080. means

  2081. to

  2082. worship

  2083. in

  2084. the

  2085. spirit

  2086. in

  2087. the

  2088. Holy

  2089. Spirit

  2090. in

  2091. the

  2092. truth

  2093. of

  2094. Jesus

  2095. Christ

  2096. the

  2097. son

  2098. of

  2099. God

  2100. you

  2101. could

  2102. think

  2103. of

  2104. it

  2105. this

  2106. way

  2107. in

  2108. a

  2109. more

  2110. familiar

  2111. terms

  2112. right

  2113. the

  2114. father

  2115. sends

  2116. the

  2117. father

  2118. is

  2119. by

  2120. nature

  2121. he's

  2122. giving

  2123. and

  2124. he's

  2125. loving

  2126. and

  2127. he sends

  2128. to

  2129. us

  2130. his

  2131. ultimate

  2132. gift

  2133. and

  2134. and

  2135. Christ

  2136. his

  2137. son

  2138. is

  2139. the

  2140. deliverer

  2141. he

  2142. joyfully

  2143. delivers

  2144. this

  2145. gift

  2146. to

  2147. us

  2148. and

  2149. the

  2150. gift

  2151. that

  2152. we

  2153. receive

  2154. is

  2155. the

  2156. Holy

  2157. Spirit

  2158. the

  2159. very

  2160. presence

  2161. of

  2162. God

  2163. and

  2164. our

  2165. job

  2166. is

  2167. to

  2168. joyfully

  2169. receive

  2170. that

  2171. to

  2172. revel

  2173. in

  2174. that

  2175. to

  2176. relish

  2177. that

  2178. gift

  2179. and

  2180. then

  2181. to

  2217. why

  2218. as

  2219. most

  2220. of

  2221. you

  2222. probably

  2223. heard

  2224. the

  2225. Westminster

  2226. Catechism

  2227. famously

  2228. states

  2229. that

  2230. the

  2232. end

  2233. of

  2234. man

  2235. is

  2236. to

  2238. God

  2239. and

  2240. enjoy

  2241. him

  2242. forever

  2243. right

  2244. and

  2245. John

  2246. Piper

  2247. famously

  2248. alters

  2249. this

  2250. sentence

  2251. to bring

  2252. out

  2253. in a

  2254. more

  2255. pointed

  2256. way

  2257. the

  2258. point

  2259. of

  2260. the

  2281. enjoying

  2282. him

  2283. we

  2284. worship

  2285. God

  2286. by

  2287. loving

  2288. him

  2289. we

  2290. worship

  2291. him

  2292. by

  2293. being

  2294. united

  2295. with

  2296. him

  2297. and

  2298. united

  2299. with

  2300. the

  2301. people

  2302. that

  2303. he

  2304. redeemed

  2305. worship

  2306. is not

  2307. a

  2308. transaction

  2309. it's

  2310. a

  2311. relationship

  2312. it's

  2313. more

  2314. intimate

  2315. and

  2316. secure

  2317. than

  2318. the

  2319. happiest

  2320. marriage

  2321. it's

  2322. more

  2323. ecstatic

  2324. and

  2325. thrilling

  2326. than

  2327. the

  2331. that

  2332. you

  2333. could

  2336. it's

  2337. more

  2338. beautiful

  2340. breathtaking

  2341. than

  2342. the

  2343. most

  2344. magnificent

  2345. sights

  2346. of

  2347. nature

  2348. because

  2349. the

  2351. of

  2352. this

  2353. worship

  2354. the

  2355. subject

  2356. of

  2357. this

  2358. loving

  2359. relationship

  2360. is

  2361. God

  2362. the

  2363. glorious

  2364. God

  2365. so

  2366. when we

  2367. worship

  2368. him

  2369. when we

  2370. gather

  2371. together

  2372. to

  2373. worship

  2374. but also

  2375. when we

  2376. worship

  2377. him

  2378. through

  2379. our

  2380. life

  2381. and

  2382. the

  2383. way

  2384. we

  2385. live

  2386. we're

  2387. not

  2388. begrudgingly

  2389. paying

  2390. our

  2391. dues

  2392. it's

  2393. a

  2394. privilege

  2395. we get

  2396. to be

  2397. part

  2398. of

  2399. we

  2400. get

  2401. to

  2402. worship

  2403. God

  2404. through

  2405. the

  2406. spirit

  2407. and

  2408. truth

  2409. of

  2410. Jesus

  2411. Christ

  2412. we

  2413. get

  2414. to

  2415. enjoy

  2416. the

  2417. eternal

  2418. life

  2419. through

  2420. the

  2421. spirit

  2422. and

  2423. truth

  2424. of

  2425. Jesus

  2426. Christ

  2427. and

  2428. if

  2429. you

  2430. have

  2431. not

  2432. yet

  2433. placed

  2434. your

  2435. trust

  2436. in

  2437. Jesus

  2438. Christ

  2439. and

  2440. you

  2441. don't

  2442. know

  2443. what

  2444. it

  2445. means

  2446. to

  2447. have

  2448. this

  2449. eternal

  2450. life

  2451. then

  2452. I

  2453. urge

  2454. you

  2455. to

  2456. consider

  2457. the

  2458. promise

  2459. and

  2460. the

  2461. condition

  2462. for

  2463. eternal

  2464. life

  2465. that

  2466. Jesus

  2467. lays

  2468. out

  2469. here

  2470. because

  2471. as

  2472. you

  2473. see

  2474. in

  2475. verses

  2476. 28

  2477. to

  2478. 29

  2479. it

  2480. records

  2481. that

  2482. the

  2483. woman

  2484. left

  2485. her

  2486. water

  2487. jar

  2488. and

  2489. went

  2490. away

  2491. into

  2492. town

  2493. and

  2494. said

  2495. to

  2496. the

  2497. people

  2498. come

  2499. see

  2500. a

  2501. man

  2502. who

  2503. told

  2504. me

  2505. all

  2506. that

  2507. I

  2508. ever

  2509. did

  2510. can

  2511. this

  2512. be

  2513. the

  2514. Christ

  2515. having

  2516. come

  2517. to

  2518. the

  2519. well

  2520. to

  2521. draw

  2522. water

  2523. she

  2524. leaves

  2525. the

  2526. water

  2527. jar

  2528. behind

  2529. to

  2530. go

  2531. home

  2532. because

  2533. she

  2534. has

  2535. a

  2536. greater

  2537. new

  2538. hope

  2539. in

  2540. the

  2541. living

  2542. water

  2543. that

  2544. Christ

  2545. offered

  2546. her

  2547. if

  2548. you

  2549. knew

  2550. if you

  2551. knew

  2552. that

  2553. you

  2554. could

  2555. buy

  2556. a

  2557. $10,000

  2558. lottery

  2559. ticket

  2560. that

  2561. you

  2562. know

  2563. is

  2564. going

  2565. to

  2566. win

  2567. you

  2568. $10

  2569. trillion

  2570. I

  2571. mean

  2572. who

  2573. wouldn't

  2574. do

  2575. that

  2576. right

  2577. you

  2578. would

  2579. empty

  2580. your

  2581. savings

  2582. account

  2583. you

  2584. would

  2585. scrape

  2586. everything

  2587. you

  2588. possibly

  2589. can

  2590. if

  2591. necessary

  2592. you

  2593. would

  2594. sell

  2595. everything

  2596. you

  2597. own

  2598. to

  2599. buy

  2600. that

  2601. ticket

  2602. why

  2603. settle

  2604. for

  2605. just

  2606. water

  2607. why

  2608. settle

  2609. for

  2610. life

  2611. 80

  2612. years

  2613. 90

  2614. years

  2615. why

  2616. settle

  2617. for

  2618. the

  2619. fleeting

  2620. pleasures

  2621. of this

  2622. world

  2623. when

  2624. eternal

  2625. life

  2626. is

  2627. offered

  2628. to

  2629. us

  2630. and

  2631. sometimes

  2632. we

  2633. as

  2634. Christians

  2635. can

  2636. fall

  2637. to the

  2638. trap

  2639. of

  2640. neglecting

  2641. and

  2642. failing

  2643. to

  2644. appreciate

  2645. this

  2646. beautiful

  2647. promise

  2648. of

  2649. Christ

  2650. and

  2651. Christian

  2652. author

  2653. Jerry

  2654. Bridges

  2655. relays

  2656. the story

  2657. in one

  2658. of his

  2659. books

  2660. of a

  2661. southern

  2662. plantation

  2663. owner

  2664. who

  2665. freed

  2666. a

  2667. slave

  2668. that

  2669. he

  2670. used

  2671. to

  2672. own

  2673. and

  2674. when

  2675. he

  2676. was

  2677. dying

  2678. he

  2679. left

  2680. him

  2681. an

  2682. inheritance

  2683. of

  2684. fifty

  2685. thousand

  2686. dollars

  2687. which

  2688. at

  2689. that

  2690. time

  2691. was

  2692. quite

  2693. a bit

  2694. of

  2695. money

  2696. maybe

  2697. something

  2698. more

  2699. akin

  2700. to

  2701. like

  2702. half

  2703. a

  2704. million

  2705. dollars

  2706. and

  2707. when

  2708. the

  2709. man

  2710. died

  2711. the

  2712. lawyer

  2713. of

  2714. the

  2715. estate

  2716. dutifully

  2717. informed

  2718. this

  2719. former

  2720. slave

  2721. this

  2722. liberated

  2723. man

  2724. and

  2725. he

  2726. told

  2727. him

  2728. that

  2729. he

  2730. has

  2731. an

  2732. inheritance

  2733. from

  2734. but

  2735. weeks

  2736. went

  2737. by

  2738. and

  2739. this

  2740. former

  2741. slave

  2742. never

  2743. called

  2744. for

  2745. any

  2746. of

  2747. his

  2748. inheritance

  2749. so

  2750. the

  2751. lawyer

  2752. called

  2753. again

  2754. saying

  2755. you know

  2756. you really

  2757. have

  2758. money

  2759. you can

  2760. draw

  2761. you could

  2762. use

  2763. this

  2764. money

  2765. and

  2766. he

  2767. said

  2768. on the

  2769. phone

  2770. sir

  2771. do you

  2772. think

  2773. I

  2774. can

  2775. have

  2776. fifty

  2777. cents

  2778. to buy

  2779. a sack

  2780. of

  2781. cornmeal

  2782. not

  2783. having

  2784. handled

  2785. money

  2786. most

  2787. of his

  2788. life

  2789. he

  2790. had

  2791. not

  2792. the

  2793. slightest

  2794. idea

  2795. of the

  2796. amount

  2797. of money

  2798. he

  2799. was

  2800. dealing

  2801. with

  2802. so

  2803. he

  2804. and

  2805. sometimes

  2806. we

  2807. act

  2808. like

  2809. that

  2810. ransom

  2811. slave

  2812. we

  2813. have

  2814. eternal

  2815. life

  2816. communion

  2817. with

  2818. the

  2819. triune

  2820. God

  2821. offered

  2822. to

  2823. us

  2824. and

  2825. we

  2826. settle

  2827. for

  2828. meager

  2829. portions

  2830. we

  2831. don't

  2832. take

  2833. advantage

  2834. of

  2835. the

  2836. means

  2837. of

  2838. grace

  2839. that

  2840. God

  2841. has

  2842. given

  2843. us

  2844. we

  2845. neglect

  2846. his

  2847. word

  2848. we

  2849. fail

  2850. to

  2851. commune

  2852. with

  2853. him

  2854. in

  2855. prayer

  2856. we

  2857. don't

  2858. eagerly

  2859. participate

  2860. in

  2861. the

  2862. life

  2863. of

  2864. the

  2865. local

  2866. church

  2867. instead

  2868. of

  2869. taking

  2870. advantage

  2871. of

  2872. this

  2873. eternal

  2874. life

  2875. and

  2876. inheritance

  2877. that

  2878. Christ

  2879. won

  2880. for

  2881. us

  2882. he

  2883. paid

  2884. for

  2885. it

  2886. he

  2887. ransomed

  2888. us

  2889. for

  2890. it

  2891. he

  2892. freed

  2893. us

  2894. from

  2895. sin

  2896. and

  2897. slavery

  2898. to

  2899. sin

  2900. yet

  2901. we

  2902. go

  2903. back

  2904. to

  2905. our

  2906. chains

  2907. to

  2908. flirt

  2909. with

  2910. sin

  2911. and

  2912. pleasures

  2913. of

  2914. this

  2915. world

  2916. again

  2917. as

  2918. if

  2919. far

  2920. greater

  2921. pleasures

  2922. have

  2923. not

  2924. been

  2925. offered

  2926. to

  2927. us

  2928. brothers

  2929. and sisters

  2930. we get

  2931. to

  2932. enjoy

  2933. eternal

  2934. life

  2935. it's

  2936. coming

  2937. but it's

  2938. here

  2939. through

  2940. Christ

  2941. let's

  2942. never

  2943. cease

  2944. to

  2945. worship

  2946. him

  2947. through

  2948. the

  2949. spirit

  2950. and

  2951. truth

  2952. of

  2953. Jesus

  2954. Christ

  2955. let's

  2956. pray

  2957. together

  2958. God

  2959. we

  2960. invite

  2961. you

  2962. to

  2963. transform

  2964. our

  2965. affections

  2966. our

  2967. thoughts

  2968. our

  2969. desires

  2970. so that

  2971. we

  2972. are able

  2973. to live

  2974. by the

  2975. reality

  2976. that you

  2977. teach

  2978. live

  2979. in light

  2980. of the

  2981. eternal

  2982. life

  2983. granted

  2984. to

  2985. us

  2986. through

  2987. Jesus
