  1. And it claimed that the man initially accused his wife of infidelity,

  2. but then when the paternity test revealed that this was truly his children,

  3. his wife then confessed that she had had a complete plastic makeover worth about $100,000,

  4. which was the result of, which is what resulted supposedly in these children.

  5. And the story was circulated along with this picture of two, I mean, really beautiful couple,

  6. and then three admittedly not so pretty children.

  7. It was circulated, but it turns out the story was an urban legend,

  8. and the picture was not of a real family.

  9. Rather, the two parents were actually models, which is why they were so good-looking,

  10. and the children were Photoshopped to look suspiciously ugly.

  11. And it was actually originally an advertisement of a Taiwanese plastic surgery center,

  12. complete with the tagline,

  13. the only thing you'll ever have to worry about is having to explain it to the kids.

  14. So this appalling story, it's funny now that we know that it's fictional,

  15. but it teaches us not only an important lesson about checking your sources,

  16. whether you're a news agency that covered it or people who are reading it,

  17. but even more, it illustrates the principle of paternity.

  18. This story was plausible to us because we know instinctively,

  19. we know from experience that children are supposed to resemble their parents.

  20. They're supposed to look like their parents.

  21. They're supposed to act like their parents.

  22. And in this passage, we find the Jewish leaders and Jesus debating about the true paternity of the Son,

  23. and saying, who is truly the Son of God?

  24. And the question is of the utmost importance,

  25. because it is only the true Son of God who can reveal God the Father to us.

  26. And Jesus demonstrates convincingly in this passage

  27. that He is the true Son of God who liberates those enslaved to sin and death.

  28. That's the main point of this passage.

  29. And He proves this with four things.

  30. At first, He bears the Father's witness.

  31. Second, He speaks the Father's words.

  32. Three, Jesus does the Father's works.

  33. And finally, He shares the Father's oneness.

  34. So in these four proofs, Jesus demonstrates that He's the true Son of God

  35. who liberates those enslaved to sin and death.

  36. The Father's witness, Father's words, Father's works, and the Father's oneness.

  37. And the first proof is that Jesus bears the Father's witness.

  38. And Jesus makes this incredible claim in verse 12,

  39. I am the light of the world.

  40. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  41. And we know from chapter 7 that this setting is during the Feast of the Tabernacle,

  42. or the Feast of Boots.

  43. And during the celebration of the Jews,

  44. they had an elaborate ceremony involving water and light.

  45. And the light part, they lit four huge lamps in the temple courts,

  46. and people danced and sang through the night while holding torches in their hands.

  47. And the witnesses, ancient witnesses of this festival wrote that you could see the light

  48. emanating from the temple precinct to all of Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles.

  49. And this would go on for days.

  50. And moreover, Zechariah 14, 5-7, prophesied,

  51. and this passage was actually a part of the liturgy,

  52. the passage that they read during this feast.

  53. And it prophesied that there will be on the last day no more day or night

  54. because the light of God will shine.

  55. And so in light of this loaded context, Jesus says,

  56. I am the light of the world.

  57. So it's an audacious claim to say the least.

  58. And so the Pharisees confront him in verse 13.

  59. You are bearing witness about yourself.

  60. Your testimony is not true.

  61. And they're referring to what Jesus himself said earlier in chapter 5,

  62. where he said,

  63. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true.

  64. There is another who bears witness about me,

  65. and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.

  66. So they're kind of quoting Jesus' words back to him,

  67. saying, You're bearing witness about yourself, so this can't be true.

  68. And what they're saying, in essence, is,

  69. I mean, you could make up whatever you want about yourself, right?

  70. You could invent stories.

  71. I mean, so it's not really verifiable if you say it for yourself,

  72. but if someone else corroborates it, then there's some weight.

  73. It could hold water.

  74. That's what they're saying.

  75. And that's why we need, when we apply for jobs or colleges,

  76. references to go along with resumes that we submit.

  77. And so there is something futile about praising oneself,

  78. bearing witness to oneself.

  79. So the Pharisees jump on that, and they say to Jesus,

  80. you're bearing witness about yourself, and so it's not true.

  81. And Jesus answers them in verses 14 to 15.

  82. Follow along with me.

  83. Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true,

  84. for I know where I came from and where I'm going.

  85. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.

  86. You judge according to the flesh.

  87. I judge no one.

  88. So Jesus is not playing by their rules here.

  89. So he says, in effect,

  90. So what?

  91. What if I am bearing witness about myself?

  92. The fact that you cannot verify what I said doesn't mean that it's not true,

  93. because in fact it is true, Jesus says.

  94. And he says,

  95. the reason he gives for this is,

  96. So this is not unlike, you know, in court when a witness is being cross-examined,

  97. and the lawyer questions the witness saying,

  98. well, how do you know that happened?

  99. What do you know about this?

  100. How can you say that?

  101. And the witness simply responds,

  102. well, I was there.

  103. I mean, I was there.

  104. I saw it with my eyes.

  105. And Jesus is, in fact, saying,

  106. I was there.

  107. I was with the Father in heaven,

  108. and now I'm going back to him soon,

  109. to the glory and dominion I had before I came.

  110. But you, on the other hand,

  111. haven't a clue about the heavenly realities of which I speak.

  112. So therefore, I can bear witness about myself, says Jesus.

  113. And he continues,

  114. You judge according to the flesh.

  115. I judge no one.

  116. Judging according to the flesh means that they were,

  117. had the limitations incumbent on all human beings.

  118. Their knowledge is finite.

  119. Their character is flawed.

  120. Therefore, their judgment also is fallible.

  121. But Jesus says he doesn't judge like that.

  122. He judges accurately.

  123. And it's not saying here that he doesn't judge at all,

  124. because he does judge.

  125. But he's saying that he's not judging in an ultimate,

  126. final sense at this time.

  127. Because as he said in chapter 3, 17,

  128. God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world,

  129. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  130. Jesus will come again to judge the world,

  131. but this time around,

  132. he has yet come to save the world.

  133. And so he says,

  134. You judge according to the flesh.

  135. I judge no one.

  136. But Jesus doesn't stop there.

  137. He tells them that even by their own standards,

  138. Jesus is not bearing witness to himself alone.

  139. He does have someone that's corroborating his witness.

  140. He says in verse 16,

  141. Yet even if I do judge,

  142. my judgment is true,

  143. for it is not I alone who judge,

  144. but I am the Father who sent me.

  145. And he continues,

  146. In your law it is written

  147. that the testimony of two people is true.

  148. I am the one who bears witness about myself,

  149. and the Father who sent me

  150. bears witness about me.

  151. Now, the Father bore witness to Jesus at his baptism

  152. when he spoke and said,

  153. This is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased.

  154. The Father also continually bears witness to his son

  155. with his presence.

  156. It says in verse 29,

  157. And he who sent me is with me.

  158. He has not left me alone.

  159. The Father is with the Son at all times.

  160. But the Jews who are arguing with Jesus

  161. is not satisfied with that answer.

  162. Because they don't see the Father with their own eyes.

  163. And so they ask him in verse 19,

  164. Where is your Father?

  165. And Jesus answers,

  166. You know neither me nor my Father.

  167. If you knew me,

  168. you would know my Father also.

  169. The reason Jesus gives

  170. for why the Jewish leaders don't recognize his Father

  171. is because they don't know him.

  172. And Jesus is saying,

  173. in fact,

  174. that his family resemblance

  175. is so obvious,

  176. so plain,

  177. that he resembles the Father,

  178. God his Father,

  179. that the fact that these Jews

  180. don't recognize him

  181. is a sure evidence

  182. that they do not even know the Father.

  183. Which is,

  184. of course,

  185. very offensive to the Jews.

  186. And so they say in verse 20,

  187. they wanted to arrest him,

  188. but they could not.

  189. Because his hour had not yet come.

  190. So this is the first proof.

  191. Jesus bears the Father's witness.

  192. And the second proof Jesus offers

  193. for his true sonship

  194. is that he speaks the Father's words.

  195. In verse 26,

  196. 26,

  197. When you have lifted up the Son of Man,

  198. then you will know that I am he,

  199. and that I do nothing on my own authority,

  200. but speak,

  201. just as the Father taught me.

  202. We know that he is the true Son of God

  203. because he speaks precisely the words

  204. of his own Father.

  205. And he can do this

  206. because he has heard the Father.

  207. He's been with the Father.

  208. And he's,

  209. because he's from above,

  210. from the heavenly realm of God,

  211. as opposed to from the earth below,

  212. like these Pharisees,

  213. the creation that's in rebellion against God.

  214. And what is the Father's word

  215. that Jesus speaks?

  216. It's in verse 23 and 24.

  217. You are from below.

  218. I am from above.

  219. You are of this world.

  220. I am not of this world.

  221. I told you

  222. that you would die in your sins.

  223. For unless you believe

  224. that I am he,

  225. you will die in your sins.

  226. That's the word of the Father,

  227. the word of salvation

  228. that Jesus had been proclaiming

  229. from the beginning,

  230. that Jesus was sent by the Father

  231. to rescue us from our sin.

  232. That's why he says,

  233. unless you believe

  234. that I am he,

  235. you will die in your sins.

  236. Now, this is a really

  237. interesting way to phrase that

  238. because what does I am he mean?

  239. There's no context.

  240. He just says,

  241. I am he.

  242. Who is he?

  243. Who is Jesus speaking of?

  244. And that's,

  245. he says it twice

  246. in verse 24 and 25

  247. and also in verse 28.

  248. And the Jews apparently

  249. had the exact same question

  250. because they say to him,

  251. who are you?

  252. He said, I am he.

  253. Who are you?

  254. Tell us.

  255. And this phrase,

  256. I am he,

  257. is an allusion to

  258. Isaiah 43,

    Isaiah 43:10–13

  259. verses 10 to 13,

  260. where God says to Israel,

  261. his people,

  262. you are my witnesses

  263. and my servant

  264. whom I have chosen,

  265. that you may know

  266. and believe me

  267. and understand

  268. that I am he.

  269. Before me,

  270. no God was formed,

  271. nor shall there be

  272. any after me.

  273. I,

  274. I am the Lord

  275. and besides me,

  276. there is no savior.

  277. He declared

  278. and saved

  279. and proclaimed

  280. when there was

  281. no strange God

  282. among you

  283. and you are my witnesses,

  284. declares the Lord.

  285. And I am God

  286. and henceforth,

  287. I am he.

  288. There is none

  289. who can deliver

  290. from my hand.

  291. So,

  292. it's kind of confusing

  293. at first listen

  294. because he goes

  295. back and forth

  296. with the first person pronoun

  297. and third person pronoun.

  298. And the reason why

  299. God does that

  300. is because he's declaring

  301. that he is the only God.

  302. No one existed,

  303. no God existed before him,

  304. no God exists after him.

  305. He's the one

  306. who always is.

  307. He is.

  308. And though the Israelites

  309. had worshipped idols

  310. in the past

  311. and though they had

  312. sought other gods,

  313. the only God

  314. that they had ever needed,

  315. God declares,

  316. I am he.

  317. And Jesus

  318. now appropriates

  319. that

  320. powerful claim

  321. to divinity

  322. for himself.

  323. The savior

  324. you've been waiting for.

  325. The Messiah

  326. you've been looking for.

  327. The God

  328. whom you've been calling out to.

  329. I am he,

  330. says Jesus.

  331. And so,

  332. the only way

  333. we can escape

  334. dying for our sins

  335. is to believe in him

  336. and entrust ourselves

  337. to him.

  338. And that's

  339. what he's referring to

  340. when he says,

  341. when you have lifted up

  342. the Son of Man.

  343. The language of lifting up

  344. refers to being lifted up

  345. on the cross,

  346. Jesus' death

  347. on our behalf

  348. for our sins.

  349. And this is

  350. the message we proclaim

  351. week in and week out,

  352. but this is not something

  353. that we can take for granted.

  354. There was a study

  355. published by

  356. Ligonier Ministries.

  357. It was commissioned

  358. by,

  359. they commissioned it

  360. and had

  361. Lifeway Research

  362. conducted it.

  363. And they surveyed

  364. 3,000 Americans

  365. to see what their

  366. theological beliefs were.

  367. And 45% of Americans

  368. believe

  369. that there are

  370. many ways

  371. to get to heaven.

  372. And what's

  373. even more alarming

  374. is that 11%

  375. of self-proclaimed

  376. evangelicals,

  377. people who

  378. profess to believe

  379. in the gospel

  380. of Jesus Christ,

  381. say that they also

  382. believe that there

  383. are many ways

  384. to get to heaven.

  385. It's 1 in 10,

  386. which means

  387. if that holds

  388. for this group,

  389. that's about four of us

  390. sitting here right now

  391. believe that.

  392. There are many ways

  393. to get to heaven.

  394. But Jesus says

  395. very clearly,

  396. there's only one way

  397. to get to heaven

  398. and that is through Him.

  399. Unless you believe

  400. that I am He

  401. who will die

  402. in your sins,

  403. Jesus says,

  404. we will die

  405. in our sins.

  406. This may sound

  407. exclusive

  408. to some of us,

  409. especially in Cambridge

  410. where we like to

  411. a diversity of ideas,

  412. we like to learn

  413. from different cultures,

  414. we like to read

  415. different news sources

  416. and glean insights

  417. from everyone.

  418. But when it comes

  419. to salvation,

  420. when it comes

  421. to belief in God,

  422. there's only one

  423. salvation.

  424. As C.S. Lewis

  425. writes about it

  426. in his book

  427. Mere Christianity,

  428. that the question

  429. of religion

  430. is much like

  431. arithmetic in this sense.

  432. He writes,

  433. there's only one

  434. right answer

  435. to a sum

  436. and all other

  437. answers are wrong.

  438. So don't believe

  439. someone when they say

  440. what you believe

  441. is true

  442. but what I believe

  443. is also true.

  444. You can get to heaven

  445. that way

  446. but you could also

  447. get to heaven

  448. this way.

  449. it's more

  450. intellectually honest

  451. to admit

  452. that sometimes

  453. the beliefs

  454. that we hold

  455. undermine

  456. and contradict

  457. other people's beliefs

  458. and then we can

  459. truly have

  460. a meaningful conversation

  461. and Jesus does

  462. exactly that.

  463. He is the true

  464. son of God

  465. who liberates people

  466. who are enslaved

  467. to sin and death.

  468. And it says

  469. in verse 30

  470. when he said

  471. these things

  472. many believed in him

  473. which is encouraging

  474. because Jesus

  475. has not had

  476. a good track record

  477. up to this point.

  478. Many believe in him

  479. but apparently

  480. we can't quite

  481. be encouraged by that

  482. because it's

  483. a superficial faith.

  484. It seems to be

  485. a faith

  486. that's a simple

  487. mental ascent

  488. but there's no

  489. real commitment

  490. to Jesus

  491. because if you

  492. read along

  493. we see that

  494. these people

  495. who believed in him

  496. were also the same

  497. people who

  498. are seeking to kill him.

  499. The same people

  500. who are still dying

  501. in their sins

  502. as Jesus says.

  503. So

  504. when Jesus says

  505. in verse 31

  506. if you abide

  507. in my word

  508. you are truly

  509. my disciples

  510. and you will know

  511. the truth

  512. and the truth

  513. will set you free

  514. that foreshadows

  515. what is to come.

  516. It's not enough

  517. to simply believe

  518. in a mentalist

  519. and you need to

  520. abide in his word

  521. and to abide

  522. is to remain in it

  523. to hold on to it.

  524. and maybe some

  525. of you guys

  526. have been to

  527. Mount Rushmore

  528. in South Dakota.

  529. I've not been there

  530. myself

  531. but I've read

  532. about this

  533. is that

  534. there's apparently

  535. two million

  536. over two million

  537. visitors every year

  538. but as

  539. that many people

  540. go through

  541. only few of them

  542. understand the fact

  543. that

  544. the monument

  545. doesn't just

  546. stay that way

  547. without effort.

  548. There needs to be

  549. rigorous maintenance

  550. work each year

  551. and so

  552. workers have to

  553. inspect the entire

  554. face of the mountain

  555. to remove bird nests

  556. and then pull shrubs

  557. growing in the crevices

  558. of the rocks

  559. and then they also

  560. have to most importantly

  561. fill the cracks

  562. that form naturally

  563. on the surface

  564. of the mountain

  565. because if they don't

  566. fill that

  567. with a special mixture

  568. of granite dust

  569. and linseed oil

  570. I think that's

  571. flaxseed oil

  572. and white lead

  573. and then it will

  574. erode

  575. when snow

  576. and rain

  577. seep in

  578. and then freeze

  579. it will shatter the rock

  580. the image of the face

  581. of the presidents

  582. so we don't see

  583. all the work

  584. that's going in

  585. we just simply enjoy

  586. this monument

  587. when we visit

  588. and our faith

  589. likewise

  590. must be tended to

  591. and maintained

  592. we must abide

  593. in God's word

  594. and persevere

  595. in our faith

  596. because the world

  597. the flesh

  598. and the devil

  599. have a wearing effect

  600. on us

  601. adversities

  602. that we face

  603. the disappointments

  604. the gradual decay

  605. of our hopes

  606. and loves

  607. the chronic temptations

  608. that rear their ugly head

  609. again and again

  610. these have a wearing effect

  611. on us

  612. and that's one of the reasons

  613. why it's so important

  614. to gather as the body

  615. of believers

  616. each week

  617. to be renewed

  618. in our commitment

  619. to be refreshed

  620. and reminded

  621. of the truth

  622. and the same survey

  623. I quoted earlier

  624. also notes

  625. high level of correlation

  626. between church attendance

  627. and theological

  628. orthodoxy

  629. that's why Jesus says

  630. if you abide

  631. in my word

  632. you are truly

  633. my disciples

  634. and you will know

  635. the truth

  636. and the truth

  637. will set you free

  638. and the Jews

  639. respond to Jesus

  640. in verse 33

  641. we are offspring

  642. of Abraham

  643. and have never been

  644. enslaved to anyone

  645. how is it that you say

  646. you will become free

  647. and they're taking offense

  648. at the suggestion

  649. that they might

  650. potentially be enslaved

  651. because they're proud people

  652. who boasted of the fact

  653. that they were descendants

  654. of Abraham

  655. and so their spiritual heritage

  656. is really

  657. something

  658. that no one else

  659. can claim

  660. and so for that reason

  661. they never thought

  662. of themselves

  663. as being spiritually enslaved

  664. and they're referring

  665. to spiritual enslavement here

  666. because politically

  667. I mean there was not

  668. a major power

  669. in the ancient world

  670. that they had not

  671. been enslaved

  672. they've been enslaved

  673. by a lot of people

  674. right

  675. I mean Egypt

  676. Roman Empire

  677. Syria

  678. Babylon

  679. Greeks

  680. everyone

  681. and so they're talking

  682. about spiritual enslavement

  683. and Judaism taught

  684. that if you study

  685. the Torah

  686. which is the first

  687. five books

  688. of the Bible

  689. that it would make

  690. you free

  691. so it's surprising then

  692. that to these Jews

  693. who had dedicated

  694. their lives

  695. to studying the Torah

  696. Jesus says

  697. that suggests

  698. that they are enslaved

  699. presently

  700. that they need

  701. to be free

  702. and in doing so

  703. he's of course

  704. saying something

  705. about himself

  706. that he's the one

  707. that the law

  708. was pointing to

  709. he's the one

  710. the truth

  711. that can set them free

  712. and so he explains

  713. this further

  714. in verse 34

  715. truly truly

  716. I say to you

  717. everyone who practices

  718. sin

  719. is a slave

  720. to sin

  721. while it is true

  722. that they are

  723. biologically offspring

  724. of Abraham

  725. they are not spiritually

  726. the offspring

  727. of Abraham

  728. so they can't put

  729. their confidence

  730. in their heritage

  731. and likewise

  732. for us

  733. it doesn't matter

  734. whether we have

  735. believing parents

  736. or whether we grew up

  737. in the church

  738. maybe even our parents

  739. are pastors

  740. that's not enough

  741. for us

  742. we need to believe

  743. so we need to be set free

  744. from our own sin

  745. and as I was preparing this

  746. I was reminded of

  747. a show on the

  748. Discovery Channel

  749. called Moments of Impact

  750. are you guys family with?

  751. this is not

  752. it's not like

  753. an ongoing show

  754. I think

  755. it's like older

  756. it's

  757. and there's a video

  758. that I saw

  759. on it one time

  760. it showed

  761. a teenager

  762. with his friends

  763. because

  764. videoing themselves

  765. because they had

  766. a pet lion

  767. which is

  768. I mean really cool

  769. I mean if you're a teenager

  770. so he had a pet lion

  771. and of course

  772. they want a record of it

  773. so they seem to have

  774. fixed the tripod

  775. and they were recording this

  776. and there's three of them

  777. just patting away

  778. at this lion

  779. and then

  780. all of a sudden

  781. the lion

  782. turns his head

  783. and then bites

  784. the arm

  785. of the teenage boy

  786. and then starts

  787. pulling him

  788. away

  789. and so everybody

  790. is now up in arms

  791. all the adults come

  792. they try to pull him away

  793. but the lion

  794. is stronger than all of them

  795. put together

  796. keeps pulling him away

  797. and so

  798. the tug of war

  799. of life

  800. and death

  801. begins

  802. and this

  803. and it's a fully grown lion

  804. too

  805. a 500 pound lion

  806. and so

  807. everyone in that situation

  808. and people watching it

  809. are shocked

  810. right

  811. oh I can't believe

  812. that happened

  813. but really

  814. should we be shocked

  815. at all

  816. I mean this is

  817. a lion

  818. a lion is not a pet

  819. right

  820. and it's

  821. lions are apex predators

  822. right

  823. they hunt

  824. and kill

  825. that's their instinct

  826. that's what they've been

  827. trained to do

  828. and it's not

  829. a freedom to enjoy

  830. to have a lion

  831. as a pet

  832. that's rather

  833. terrorizing

  834. that's something

  835. that's a tyranny

  836. to live under

  837. and sin

  838. is like that as well

  839. we think

  840. that we can

  841. indulge in sin

  842. indulge our flesh

  843. we think

  844. that we can tame sin

  845. and tell it to

  846. sit

  847. and stay

  848. and roll over

  849. but sin

  850. always

  851. eventually

  852. consumes us

  853. sin is by nature

  854. enslaving

  855. and that's

  856. the slavery

  857. that we should be

  858. most concerned

  859. about

  860. and

  861. this is

  862. especially hard

  863. for us

  864. to remember

  865. because we live

  866. in the so-called

  867. land of freedom

  868. but when we remember

  869. we can consider

  870. this slavery to sin

  871. really we live

  872. in a land of slavery

  873. and Dr. Eric Foley

  874. who's the head

  875. of the Voice of the Martyrs

  876. Korea

  877. which is

  878. Voice of the Martyrs

  879. is an organization

  880. that brings attention

  881. to Christians

  882. being persecuted

  883. throughout the world

  884. and tries to provide

  885. practical aid

  886. and he once did

  887. an interview

  888. on a radio

  889. and said

  890. this about

  891. North Korean Christians

  892. he asked

  893. he told them

  894. one time

  895. hey

  896. you know

  897. that the American

  898. church is praying

  899. for you

  900. praying for Christians

  901. in North Korea

  902. and then they

  903. responded this way

  904. you pray for us

  905. we pray for you

  906. that's the problem

  907. with

  908. with

  909. the American

  910. Christians

  911. and South Korean

  912. Christians

  913. you have so much

  914. and you put your

  915. faith

  916. in your money

  917. and in

  918. your freedom

  919. in North Korea

  920. we have neither

  921. money nor freedom

  922. but we have

  923. Christ

  924. and we've found

  925. he is sufficient

  926. they don't pray

  927. for the freedoms

  928. that we have

  929. because freedom

  930. in Christ

  931. they believe

  932. can't be taken

  933. away from them

  934. they don't pray

  935. for regime change

  936. they pray

  937. they don't pray

  938. for freedom

  939. and money

  940. they pray

  941. for more of Christ

  942. in their lives

  943. to experience

  944. this freedom

  945. that they have

  946. in him

  947. and that's

  948. in a country

  949. that's on the top

  950. of the list

  951. every year

  952. for persecution

  953. of Christians

  954. being executed

  955. for their faith

  956. and being sent

  957. to internment

  958. camps

  959. Christians

  960. experiencing

  961. true freedom

  962. in Christ

  963. and that's

  964. the spiritual

  965. freedom

  966. that's promised

  967. to us

  968. by Christ

  969. and Jesus

  970. alone is able

  971. to provide

  972. that freedom

  973. because he alone

  974. is the true son

  975. he says in

  976. verses 35

  977. to 36

  978. the slave

  979. does not remain

  980. in the house

  981. forever

  982. the son

  983. remains forever

  984. so if the son

  985. sets you free

  986. you will be free

  987. indeed

  988. in this culture

  989. a slave

  990. was a hired

  991. hand

  992. they owed

  993. some kind

  994. of debt

  995. so they

  996. become a slave

  997. and until they

  998. pay that

  999. they work

  1000. and once they

  1001. pay that debt

  1002. they're free

  1003. to go

  1004. and so they

  1005. are not a permanent

  1006. member of the household

1007. but on the other hand

  1008. the son

  1009. who belongs

  1010. to the

  1011. who's part

  1012. of the owner's

  1013. family

  1014. is part of the

  1015. household forever

  1016. and so on that

  1017. basis Jesus

  1018. says

  1019. it's only the son

  1020. who can liberate

  1021. slaves

  1022. for good

  1023. and notice

  1024. the word

  1025. remain

  1026. he says

  1027. the son

  1028. remains

  1029. forever

  1030. that's the

  1031. very same

  1032. word that

  1033. Jesus used

  1034. earlier to

  1035. say

  1036. if you

  1037. abide

  1038. in my

  1039. word

  1040. you are

  1041. truly

  1042. my

  1043. disciples

  1044. we must

  1045. abide

  1046. in Christ's

  1047. word

  1048. because he

  1049. alone

  1050. is the

  1051. true son

  1052. who abides

  1053. forever

  1054. in God's

  1055. house

  1056. and in

  1057. this world

  1058. as we live

  1059. we might

  1060. follow

  1061. you know

  1062. the patterns

  1063. of this

  1064. world

  1065. we might

  1066. think

  1067. that

  1068. there's

  1069. power

  1070. in

  1071. the devil's

  1072. rule

  1073. and authority

  1074. exercised

  1075. here

  1076. in this

  1077. world

  1078. we might

  1079. indulge

  1080. our sinful

  1081. flesh

  1082. and follow

  1083. that

  1084. because we

  1085. think

  1086. that those

  1087. things

  1088. will remain

  1089. with us

  1090. but only

  1091. the son

  1092. remains

  1093. only the

  1094. son is a

  1095. permanent

  1096. member of

  1097. God's

  1098. household

  1099. and so he

  1100. says

  1101. when the

  1102. son sets

  1103. you free

  1104. you will

  1105. be free

  1106. indeed

  1107. and Jesus

  1108. is the

  1109. true son

  1110. of God

  1111. who liberates

  1112. those enslaved

  1113. to sin

  1114. and death

  1115. so Jesus

  1116. bears the

  1117. father's

  1118. witness

  1119. Jesus

  1120. speaks the

  1121. father's

  1122. words

  1123. and now

  1124. Jesus

  1125. also

  1126. does

  1127. the

  1128. father's

  1129. works

  1130. in stark

  1131. contrast

  1132. the Jews

  1133. who

  1134. in this

  1135. passage

  1136. are seeking

  1137. to kill

  1138. him

  1139. verses

  1140. 39

  1141. to 41

  1142. Jesus

  1143. says to

  1144. them

  1145. if you

  1146. were

  1147. Abraham's

  1148. children

  1149. you would

  1150. be doing

  1151. the works

  1152. Abraham

  1153. did

  1154. but now

  1155. you seek

  1156. to kill

  1157. me

  1158. a man

  1159. who has

  1160. told you

  1161. the truth

  1162. that I

  1163. heard from

  1164. God

  1165. this is

  1166. not what

  1167. Abraham

  1168. did

  1169. you are

  1170. doing

  1171. the works

  1172. your father

  1173. did

  1174. so Jesus

  1175. is saying

  1176. that true

  1177. paternity

  1178. true heritage

  1179. comes not

  1180. from biological

  1181. descent

  1182. rather we

  1183. must do

  1184. the works

  1185. of our

  1186. father

  1187. and Jesus

  1188. does the

  1189. works of

  1190. the father

  1191. which is

  1192. to save

  1193. and to

  1194. liberate

  1195. enslaved

  1196. those who

  1197. are enslaved

  1198. to sin

  1199. and death

  1200. but these

  1201. Jews

  1202. are doing

  1203. the works

  1204. of their

  1205. father

  1206. in seeking

  1207. to kill

  1208. him

  1209. and so

  1210. they object

  1211. in verse 41

  1212. we were not

  1213. born of sexual

  1214. immorality

  1215. we have one

  1216. father

  1217. even God

  1218. now that kind of

1219. seems to come out of

  1220. the blue

  1221. doesn't it

  1222. why are they

  1223. talking about

  1224. sexual immorality

  1225. in this situation

  1226. and the reason

  1227. there might be

  1228. two different

  1229. reasons

  1230. and the first

  1231. is

  1232. they might be

  1233. making a snide

  1234. remark

  1235. being cheeky

  1236. here

  1237. referring to

  1238. Jesus

  1239. birth

  1240. because you

  1241. know he

  1242. was conceived

  1243. by virgin

  1244. Mary

  1245. and which

  1246. to the

  1247. unbelieving

  1248. eyes

  1249. looks very

  1250. much like

  1251. you know

  1252. illegitimate

  1253. child

  1254. you know

  1255. marriage

  1256. infidelity

  1257. and so

  1258. they might be

  1259. a cheeky way

  1260. of saying

  1261. well we

  1262. were not

  1263. born of

  1264. sexual

  1265. immorality

  1266. we have

  1267. one father

  1268. even God

  1269. and a

  1270. second

  1271. reference

  1272. maybe to

  1273. a Samaritan

  1274. folklore

  1275. Samaritans

  1276. as you know

  1277. were considered

  1278. by Jews

  1279. to be

  1280. racial

  1281. half-breeds

  1282. and political

  1283. rebels

  1284. who had

  1285. adulterated

  1286. religion

  1287. that's how

  1288. the Jews

  1289. viewed the

  1290. Samaritans

  1291. and the

  1292. Samaritans

  1293. returned the

  1294. animosity

  1295. and so

  1296. they did

  1297. not get

  1298. along

  1299. with each

  1300. other

  1301. and they

  1302. both

  1303. circulated

  1304. these

  1305. slandering

  1306. stories

  1307. about the

  1308. biological

  1309. origin

  1310. of Jews

  1311. and Samaritans

  1312. and the

  1313. one that

  1314. Samaritans

  1315. liked to

  1316. throw around

  1317. was that

  1318. these Jews

  1319. were not

  1320. actually descended

  1321. from Abraham

  1322. but that

  1323. they were

  1324. descended

  1325. Abraham

  1326. was descended

  1327. from Seth

  1328. son of Adam

  1329. but they said

  1330. that Satan

  1331. seduced Eve

  1332. and gave birth

  1333. to Cain

  1334. and that they

  1335. are actually

  1336. descended from

  1337. Cain

  1338. the line

  1339. evil line

  1340. not the

  1341. promised line

  1342. so this was

  1343. a rumor

  1344. that the

  1345. Samaritans

  1346. had been

  1347. spreading

  1348. so the

  1349. Pharisees

  1350. might be

  1351. thinking of

  1352. that

  1353. and thinking

  1354. oh Jesus

  1355. is taking

  1356. side with

  1357. the Samaritans

  1358. so they're

  1359. saying no

  1360. we're not

  1361. born of

  1362. sexual immorality

  1363. we have

  1364. one father

  1365. even God

  1366. but of

  1367. course

  1368. they're

  1369. missing

  1370. the point

  1371. because

  1372. Jesus

  1373. isn't

  1374. speaking

  1375. about

  1376. biological

  1377. heritage

  1378. he's

  1379. speaking

  1380. about

  1381. spiritual

  1382. heritage

  1383. which is

  1384. the only

  1385. kind

  1386. that counts

  1387. for him

  1388. so read

  1389. verses

  1390. 42 to

  1391. 47

  1392. with me

  1393. if God

  1394. were your

  1395. father

  1396. you would

  1397. love me

  1398. for I

  1399. came from

  1400. God

  1401. and I

  1402. am here

  1403. I came

  1404. not of

  1405. my own

  1406. accord

  1407. but he

  1408. sent me

  1409. why do you

  1410. not understand

  1411. what I say

  1412. it is because

  1413. you cannot

  1414. bear to hear

  1415. my word

  1416. you are

  1417. of your

  1418. father

  1419. the devil

  1420. and your

  1421. will is to

  1422. do your

  1423. father's

  1424. desires

  1425. he was a

  1426. murderer from

  1427. the beginning

  1428. and does not

  1429. stand in the

  1430. truth because

  1431. there is no

  1432. truth in

  1433. him

  1434. when he

  1435. lies he

  1436. speaks out

  1437. of his

  1438. own

  1439. character

  1440. for he

  1441. is a

  1442. liar

  1443. and a

  1444. father

  1445. of

  1446. lies

  1447. but because

  1448. I tell

  1449. the truth

  1450. you do

  1451. not believe

  1452. me

  1453. whoever is

  1454. of God

  1455. hears the

  1456. words of

  1457. God

  1458. the reason

  1459. why you

  1460. do not

  1461. hear them

  1462. is that

  1463. you are

  1464. not

  1465. of

  1466. God

  1467. Jesus

  1468. lays bare

  1469. the unbelieving

  1470. hearts of

  1471. the Jews

  1472. right so he

  1473. says that

  1474. they are

  1475. just

  1476. their father

  1477. as

  1478. evidenced by

  1479. their actions

  1480. is the

  1481. devil

  1482. who deceived

  1483. Adam and

  1484. Eve

  1485. and led

  1486. them to

  1487. death

  1488. he was a

  1489. murderer

  1490. and a

  1491. liar

  1492. but unlike

  1493. these pseudo

  1494. children

  1495. of God

  1496. Jesus does

  1497. the father's

  1498. works

  1499. he is without

  1500. sin

  1501. as he says

  1502. which one of you

  1503. convicts me of

  1504. sin

  1505. no one can

  1506. Jesus is the

  1507. true son of

  1508. God who

  1509. liberates

  1510. those enslaved

  1511. to sin

  1512. and death

  1513. and now

  1514. after

  1515. imagine this

  1516. is a long

  1517. back and

  1518. forth between

  1519. the Jews

  1520. and Jesus

  1521. the Jews

  1522. that are arguing

  1523. with Jesus

  1524. are by this

  1525. point fully

  1526. incensed

  1527. they are

  1528. extremely angry

  1529. they say to

  1530. him in verse

  1531. 48

  1532. are we not

  1533. right in

  1534. saying that

  1535. you are a

  1536. Samaritan

  1537. so that's

  1538. referring back

  1539. to the

  1540. accusations

  1541. they thought

  1542. Jesus was

  1543. leveling at

  1544. him

  1545. are we not

  1546. right in

  1547. saying that

  1548. you are a

  1549. Samaritan

  1550. and have

  1551. a demon

  1552. and Jesus

  1553. says

  1554. I do not

  1555. have a

  1556. demon

  1557. but I

  1558. honor my

  1559. father

  1560. and you

  1561. dishonor me

  1562. that I

  1563. do not

  1564. seek my

  1565. own

  1566. glory

  1567. there is

  1568. one who

  1569. seeks it

  1570. and he

  1571. is the

  1572. judge

  1573. and this

  1574. riles up

  1575. the Jews

  1576. even more

  1577. and they

  1578. say well

  1579. now we

  1580. know

  1581. that you

  1582. have a

  1583. demon

  1584. Abraham

  1585. died

  1586. as did

  1587. the

  1588. prophets

  1589. yet you

  1590. say

  1591. if anyone

  1592. keeps my

  1593. word

  1594. he will

  1595. never

  1596. taste

  1597. death

  1598. are you

  1599. greater

  1600. than our

  1601. father

  1602. Abraham

  1603. who died

  1604. and the

  1605. prophets

  1606. died

  1607. who do

  1608. you make

  1609. yourself

  1610. be

  1611. and they

  1612. can't

  1613. possibly

  1614. explain

  1615. such

  1616. audacity

  1617. without

  1618. resorting

  1619. to the

  1620. fact

  1621. that

  1622. Jesus

  1623. must be

  1624. insane

  1625. he must

  1626. be possessed

  1627. by a

  1628. demon

  1629. and then

  1630. Jesus

  1631. answers them

  1632. again

  1633. verses

  1634. 54

  1635. and 56

  1636. if I

  1637. glorify

  1638. myself

  1639. my glory

  1640. is nothing

  1641. it is my

  1642. father who

  1643. glorifies me

  1644. of whom

  1645. you say

  1646. he is our

  1647. God

  1648. but you

  1649. have not

  1650. known him

  1651. I

  1652. know him

  1653. and he

  1654. says later

  1655. your father

  1656. Abraham

  1657. rejoiced

  1658. that he

  1659. would see

  1660. my day

  1661. he saw

  1662. it

  1663. and was

  1664. glad

  1665. now notice

  1666. the parallel

  1667. here

  1668. because in

  1669. verse 50

  1670. Jesus had

  1671. said of

  1672. God the

  1673. father

  1674. that he

  1675. is the

  1676. one who

  1677. seeks

  1678. glory

  1679. he is

  1680. the one

  1681. who seeks

  1682. glory

  1683. but now

  1684. here in

  1685. verse 54

  1686. he says

  1687. the father

  1688. seeks

  1689. the son's

  1690. glory

  1691. the father

  1692. is glorifying

  1693. the son

  1694. and so

  1695. in saying

  1696. that Jesus

  1697. is making

  1698. a unique

  1699. identification

  1700. with the

  1701. father

  1702. the father

  1703. is the

  1704. only one

  1705. who seeks

  1706. glory for

  1707. himself

  1708. who can

  1709. seek

  1710. rightly

  1711. seek

  1712. glory

  1713. for himself

  1714. yet

  1715. this

  1716. same

  1717. self

  1718. same

  1719. father

  1720. seeks

  1721. glory

  1722. for

  1723. the

  1724. son

  1725. so

  1726. he's

  1727. speaking

  1728. of their

  1729. unity

  1730. he shares

  1731. the father's

  1732. oneness

  1733. and the

  1734. Jews are

  1735. incredulous

  1736. and so

  1737. they scoff

  1738. at him

  1739. in verse

  1740. 57

  1741. you are

  1742. not yet

  1743. 50 years

  1744. old

  1745. and have

  1746. you seen

  1747. Abraham

  1748. and Jesus

  1749. responds

  1750. authoritatively

  1751. truly

  1752. truly I

  1753. say to

  1754. you

  1755. before

  1756. Abraham

  1757. was

  1758. I

  1759. am

  1760. Jesus

  1761. doesn't

  1762. simply say

  1763. before

  1764. Abraham

  1765. was

  1766. I

  1767. was

  1768. that would

  1769. simply mean

  1770. that he's

  1771. really old

  1772. but no

  1773. he says

  1774. I

  1775. am

  1776. he is

  1777. the God

  1778. who said

  1779. I am

  1780. who I

  1781. am

  1782. in Exodus

  1783. 3

  1784. 14

  1785. the eternal

  1786. God

  1787. the God

  1788. who always

  1789. is

  1790. the God

  1791. who is

  1792. sovereign

  1793. and not

  1794. accountable

  1795. to or

  1796. dependent

  1797. on anything

  1798. or anyone

  1799. he is

  1800. that sovereign

  1801. God

  1802. he shares

  1803. the father's

  1804. oneness

  1805. and that's

  1806. why he's

  1807. the true

  1808. son who

  1809. can liberate

  1810. us

  1811. liberate

  1812. those

  1813. enslaved

  1814. to sin

  1815. and death

  1816. and I

  1817. hope

  1818. this morning

  1819. and I

  1820. pray this

  1821. morning

  1822. that every

  1823. single one

  1824. of you

  1825. come to

  1826. terms

  1827. with the

  1828. full force

  1829. of what

  1830. Jesus

  1831. is saying

  1832. the claims

  1833. that he

  1834. is making

  1835. because if

  1836. I were to

  1837. stand here

  1838. and make

  1839. the same

  1840. claims

  1841. that Jesus

  1842. is making

  1843. I hope

  1844. you say

  1845. that I'm

  1846. a lunatic

  1847. I hope

  1848. you say

  1849. that I'm

  1850. possessed

  1851. by a demon

  1852. because that's

  1853. the right

  1854. assessment

  1855. if he

  1856. doesn't

  1857. back it

  1858. up

  1859. and that's

  1860. what C.S.

  1861. Lewis talks

  1862. about in his

  1863. book

  1864. he says

  1865. I am

  1866. trying here

  1867. to prevent

  1868. anyone

  1869. saying

  1870. the really

  1871. foolish

  1872. thing

  1873. that people

  1874. often say

  1875. about him

  1876. I'm ready

  1877. to accept

  1878. Jesus

  1879. as a great

  1880. moral teacher

  1881. but I don't

  1882. accept his

  1883. claim to be

  1884. God

  1885. that is the

  1886. one thing

  1887. we must not

  1888. say

  1889. a man who

  1890. was merely

  1891. a man

  1892. and said

  1893. the sort

  1894. of things

  1895. Jesus said

  1896. would not

  1897. be a great

  1898. moral teacher

  1899. he would

  1900. either be

  1901. a lunatic

  1902. on the level

  1903. with the man

  1904. who says

  1905. he is a

  1906. poached egg

  1907. or else

  1908. he would be

  1909. the devil

  1910. of hell

  1911. you must

  1912. make your

  1913. choice

  1914. either this

  1915. man was

  1916. and is

  1917. the son

  1918. of God

  1919. or else

  1920. a madman

  1921. or something

  1922. worse

  1923. you can shut

  1924. him up

  1925. for a fool

  1926. you can spit

  1927. at him

  1928. and kill

  1929. him as a

  1930. demon

  1931. or you can

  1932. fall at

  1933. his feet

  1934. and call

  1935. him Lord

  1936. and God

  1937. but let us

  1938. not come

  1939. with any

  1940. patronizing

  1941. nonsense

  1942. about his

  1943. being a

  1944. great human

  1945. teacher

  1946. he is not

  1947. left that

  1948. open to us

  1949. he did not

  1950. intend to

  1951. so who

  1952. do you

  1953. say

  1954. Jesus

  1955. is

  1956. Jesus

  1957. claimed

  1958. that he

  1959. is a

  1960. true

  1961. son

  1962. of God

  1963. who

  1964. liberates

  1965. those

  1966. enslaved

  1967. to sin

  1968. and death

  1969. and do

  1970. you believe

  1971. that

  1972. the ultimate

  1973. proof of

  1974. that he

  1975. gave when

  1976. he died

  1977. for our

  1978. sins

  1979. and rose

  1980. again

  1981. from the

  1982. dead

  1983. as the

  1984. first fruit

  1985. of resurrection

  1986. life that

  1987. he promises

  1988. us

  1989. and when

  1990. you believe

  1991. him we

  1992. will have

  1993. life

  1994. we'll have

  1995. the light

  1996. that gives

  1997. life as

  1998. Jesus promised

  1999. in verse

  2000. 12

  2001. so if

  2002. you're

  2003. not a

  2004. believer

  2005. then I

  2006. want to

  2007. exhort you

  2008. this morning

  2009. to consider

  2010. this before

  2011. you leave

  2012. talk to

  2013. someone before

  2014. you leave

  2015. and if you

  2016. are a

  2017. believer

  2018. then I

  2019. encourage

  2020. you

  2021. to live

  2022. in light

  2023. of the

  2024. freedom

  2025. that Christ

  2026. won for

  2027. you

  2028. abide

  2029. abide

  2030. in his

  2031. work

  2032. because

  2033. he's the

  2034. only one

  2035. who can

  2036. liberate

  2037. us

  2038. from sin

  2039. and death

  2040. let's pray

  2041. together

  2042. God as we

  2043. remember

  2044. your

  2045. incredible

  2046. claim

  2047. you are

  2048. the true

  2049. son of

  2050. God

  2051. who saves

  2052. us

  2053. Lord we

  2054. can't help

  2055. but be

  2056. thankful

  2057. that you

  2058. have revealed

  2059. this to

  2060. us

  2061. the one

  2062. way of

  2063. salvation

  2064. the one

  2065. and only

  2066. son

  2067. of God

  2068. we pray

  2069. God you

  2070. would help

  2071. us as a

  2072. church to

  2073. live in

  2074. light of

  2075. this reality

  2076. and make

  2077. us bold

  2078. in proclaiming

  2079. this truth

  2080. to those

  2081. who do not

  2082. yet know
