  1. Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone, for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.

  2. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor with flattering lips, and a double heart they speak.

  3. May the Lord cut off all the flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boast,

  4. those who say, With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us, who is master over us?

  5. Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise, says the Lord.

  6. I will place him in the safety for which he longs.

  7. The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.

  8. You, O Lord, will keep them, you will guard us from this generation forever.

  9. On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of men.

  10. It doesn't take too long in this psalm before you realize it's not one of thanksgiving or praise.

  11. But this is a psalm of lament.

  12. And if you look at the psalm, you'll find that a third of the psalm is made up of laments.

  13. So from that we can kind of get an idea of how important a role that is for us in our Christian growth.

  14. But also it gets us to see how real some of these struggles are in our life.

  15. Because God has laid it on the heart of David and the other writers to bring laments out.

  16. So what I want to do is just focus on the aspects of a lament as we look at the psalm.

  17. And just see how it helps us and what exactly is going on here.

  18. And as you guys know, a lament is a passionate expression of grief or sorrow about a trial or trouble that's going on.

  19. And then there's a cry out to the Lord for help from that.

  20. So as we look at Psalm 12, the first part of a lament is the cry.

  21. And we see that in verse 1 where David says,

  22. Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone.

  23. For the faithful have vanished from among the children of men.

  24. So we see right from the beginning that he's crying out to the Lord.

  25. And the problem that's going on is that he feels alone in his struggles.

  26. His struggles in following the Lord and having a pure and righteous life.

  27. And those around him that were once godly are gone.

  28. So whether it's people close by or people around him, people that are in authority over him,

  29. there's this oppression that has come in as everyone who was once their support he feels is now gone.

  30. Now, this is a lament that's not a personal one, although it sounds at first like it.

  31. But it's a lament that affects the whole family of God, the people of God.

  32. So not only does it affect them in that it's the people of God that are turning away from God,

  33. but it's those few that are left that are wanting to stand strong that are feeling the effect of those who are pulling away.

  34. The second part of the lament is the complaint.

  35. And that's pulled out in verse 2 where David is talking about what the real problem is.

  36. And that's basically the lies, the flattering, the double talk, the hypocrisy.

  37. It's the, I'm not sure who my friends are because on one hand they tell me things they want me to hear,

  38. but behind my back it's something else.

  39. So that just adds to the cry.

  40. It's feeling like that you're alone and at the same time you don't know who to trust.

  41. And I think we can all relate to this.

  42. I know I can and I'm not the only one that has family issues,

  43. but we all know there's people who talk and act one way to you.

  44. And then when you're not there it's something different.

  45. And it's hard for family or friends to relate to that.

  46. Like if you're the one doing it, it's hard to connect with that coming from someone who's a friend or family member

  47. because it just doesn't make sense, especially I think for Christians

  48. because that's not how God calls us to roll.

  49. That's not how we are to live.

  50. So we have examples of that I'm sure in our own life,

  51. but there's also examples all through the Bible of how this has taken place.

  52. So here there isn't an exact example that's being talked about.

  53. The thought is that this was taking around the time of Saul's reign.

  54. So we have Saul and his persecution against David, which was just years of relentless, like wanting to kill David.

  55. And just to get into the details of all that was involved, that was pretty oppressive for David

  56. and for him to at one point have a chance to kill Saul and then him not

  57. because he knew that God anointed him was really just a testimony to us on how God will protect us

  58. when we do what he calls us to do, even when every part of our body wants to just deal with the problem,

  59. which in that case was to kill Saul.

  60. Another example that I was thinking of was with Joseph and his brothers.

  61. We just finished reading through that section in children's ministry.

  62. And just the fact that Joseph was just seeking to do what God was calling him to do.

  63. And it seemed like at every turn he was being lied against by his brothers, sold into slavery.

  64. You know, he tried to be a good slave and then he was lied against and thrown into prison.

  65. So it was just time after time where he's being bombarded by these lies and hypocrisy.

  66. And in the end, God was still protected, just like he did with David.

  67. And then finally, the biggest example of all would be Jesus Christ

  68. and the lies and the accusations that he endured

  69. all because of the people who wanted to keep their political power.

  70. They wanted to keep their status.

  71. And in order to do that, they thought they needed to lie and accuse Jesus and ultimately kill him.

  72. And they did, but we know the story doesn't end there.

  73. So praise be to God for that.

  74. So we have the cry and the complaint.

  75. And next we have the petition, which is in verses 3 and 4.

  76. And this is the crying out to God for help.

  77. May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,

  78. the tongue that makes great boast.

  79. And those who say,

  80. With our tongue we will prevail,

  81. our lips are with us,

  82. who is master over us.

  83. So here we have

  84. we have the description of

  85. people who are very boastful and selfish.

  86. They're very self-centered.

  87. There's no

  88. looking to God for anything.

  89. They are master over their own lives

  90. and they don't need God there.

  91. David knows this

  92. and this is the problem that he's dealing with

  93. and he's asking God for help.

  94. And just while we're

  95. we're talking about

  96. these type of people

  97. who look at just themselves

  98. and not to God

  99. and are proud

  100. and boastful,

  101. these are the type of people

  102. that we all know can ruin relationships.

  103. They ruin families.

  104. They also split churches.

  105. I've been in one where that's the case

  106. and I know you guys have heard about it.

  107. So as we are on this section,

  108. I just wanted to take a moment

  109. just to

  110. just to tell you to guard yourself

  111. against falling into that temptation

  112. of

  113. thinking more about ourselves

  114. and less about God.

  115. Because as we start to do that,

  116. then

  117. Satan is going to do everything he can

  118. to keep you from looking to God.

  119. And when you're looking to yourself,

  120. that's when you don't need God

  121. or so you think

  122. and things fall apart.

  123. So

  124. continue to

  125. to focus on Christ.

  126. The next section is in verse 5

  127. and that is

  128. the response that

  129. that David gets back

  130. from God.

  131. not all Psalms

  132. have this type of response back.

  133. Some of them

  134. there's that plea

  135. and there's that

  136. asking God for help

  137. and then

  138. there's

  139. there's a kind of a

  140. preaching to oneself

  141. as they

  142. remind themselves

  143. of

  144. God

  145. and how

  146. he's the protector

  147. and he will

  148. come through for them.

  149. But here in verse 5

  150. we actually get a word back

  151. from the Lord.

  152. Because the poor

  153. are plundered,

  154. because the needy groaned,

  155. I will now arise

  156. says the Lord.

  157. I will place him

  158. in the safety

  159. for which he longs.

  160. In that case

  161. speaking of the

  162. the poor

  163. and the needy.

  164. So

  165. God sees

  166. what's going on

  167. and God

  168. judges those

  169. who sin against him.

  170. Those who

  171. oppress

  172. others.

  173. So we can

  174. take heart

  175. in that

  176. in that response

  177. from God

  178. knowing that

  179. at times

  180. we want to fix it

  181. but

  182. God knows

  183. what's going on.

  184. God has a plan

  185. and so

  186. we do

  187. our part

  188. by not spreading

  189. those lies

  190. and hypocrisies

  191. and we let God

  192. take it from there.

  193. And

  194. the last part

  195. of lament

  196. is a statement

  197. of confidence

  198. and that usually

  199. comes

  200. towards the end

  201. as the psalmist

  202. is reminded

  203. of

  204. who God is

  205. and who he is

  206. for us

  207. and we see

  208. that in verse

  209. six and seven

  210. the words

  211. of the Lord

  212. are pure words

  213. like silver

  214. refined in a furnace

  215. on the ground

  216. purified seven times.

  217. You O Lord

  218. will keep them

  219. you will guard us

  220. from this generation

  221. forever.

  222. In that last part

  223. verse seven

  224. you will keep them

  225. speaking of the

  226. poor and needy

  227. God will keep them

  228. and then he will

  229. guard us

  230. from this generation

  231. forever.

  232. So that's

  233. that's the promise

  234. that we have

  235. that we know

  236. we can hold on to.

  237. And one

  238. one phrase

  239. that as I was

  240. reading through

  241. this kind of

  242. kind of stuck

  243. in my mind

  244. was that he was

  245. talking about

  246. silver being

  247. refined

  248. and I just

  249. wondered

  250. why

  251. why silver

  252. like why did he

  253. pick silver here

  254. and not gold

  255. because to me

  256. gold is

  257. is worth more

  258. you know

  259. if

  260. that to me

  261. would be pure

  262. maybe because

  263. it is worth more

  264. but not necessarily

  265. and I looked

  266. around a little bit

  267. but didn't really

  268. see a whole lot

  269. on why silver

  270. was used here

  271. so I'm just going

  272. to give you

  273. my own interpretation

  274. and may not be

  275. biblical but I think

  276. it's still something

  277. that's helpful

  278. to hold on to

  279. and that was

  280. as we see gold

  281. used in the Old

  282. Testament

  283. a lot of times

  284. gold is

  285. is more for

  286. decorative reasons

  287. more for display

  288. whereas silver

  289. is something a little

  290. bit more attainable

  291. silver is more

  292. for something

  293. that's

  294. I don't want

  295. to say useful

  296. but like

  297. for utensils

  298. or bowls

  299. you know

  300. a silver utensil

  301. would be something

  302. you could use

  303. the gold plating

  304. on something

  305. may not be

  306. necessarily

  307. something you

  308. could use

  309. so in thinking

  310. of the words

  311. of the Lord

  312. and then being

  313. at like something

  314. pure

  315. but attainable

  316. and usable

  317. that that made

  318. more sense

  319. to me

  320. so the words

  321. of the Lord

  322. being like

  323. like pure

  324. holy silver

  325. that we're able

  326. to use

  327. for whatever

  328. God calls

  329. us to use

  330. just made

  331. more sense

  332. and thinking

  333. of that

  334. purification

  335. process

  336. that they

  337. take silver

  338. through

  339. to refine

  340. a metal

  341. seven times

  342. as they melt

  343. it

  344. and then pull

  345. the imperfections

  346. and the dross

  347. off the top

  348. of that

  349. melted

  350. precious metal

  351. you just get

  352. the idea

  353. of this

  354. total pureness

  355. when it's done

  356. they said

  357. that the

  358. that the person

  359. doing

  360. the

  361. the purifying

  362. of the silver

  363. would look

  364. at the surface

  365. of the silver

  366. and he should

  367. be able to see

  368. his reflection

  369. increase

  370. as he pulled

  371. off those

  372. imperfections

  373. and the

  374. the dirt

  375. and all

  376. that got

  377. mixed into

  378. it

  379. and to me

  380. that was a

  381. beautiful picture

  382. of what Christ

  383. is looking to do

  384. he's looking to

  385. see a reflection

  386. of himself

  387. and so that's

  388. a good example

  389. of what he

  390. does with us

  391. is to continue

  392. to refine

  393. us and purify

  394. us

  395. and then the

  396. last

  397. the last

  398. verse

  399. just as

  400. the

  401. the psalm

  402. ends up

  403. is

  404. kind of

  405. a reminder

  406. that

  407. that God

  408. is going to

  409. guard us

  410. from this

  411. generation

  412. which is the

  413. end of verse

  414. seven

  415. he'll guard us

  416. from this

  417. generation

  418. forever

  419. this generation

  420. of godless

  421. self-centered

  422. people

  423. that

  424. they spread

  425. lies

  426. it sounds

  427. rough to say

  428. it like that

  429. but really

  430. that's the

  431. goal of a lot

  432. of people

  433. is

  434. they're looking

  435. out for

  436. themselves

  437. and with

  438. that comes

  439. lies

  440. and hypocrisy

  441. and so

  442. that's the

  443. generation

  444. that we live

  445. in

  446. and it wasn't

  447. just at

  448. David's time

  449. but it's

  450. something that's

  451. ongoing now

  452. so

  453. for him

  454. to say

  455. guard us

  456. from this

  457. generation

  458. forever

  459. makes sense

  460. because

  461. it's not

  462. his generation

  463. but it's

  464. ongoing with

  465. us

  466. we deal

  467. with that

  468. as well

  469. and then

  470. in verse

  471. eight

  472. it being

  473. on every

  474. side

  475. the wicked

  476. prowl

  477. you know

  478. it's all

  479. around us

  480. you know

  481. it isn't

  482. something

  483. that

  484. decreases

  485. and we

  486. know

  487. that the

  488. world

  489. is

  490. getting

  491. worse

  492. and not

  493. better

  494. that's

  495. just a

  496. happy thought

  497. to think

  498. about

  499. on this

  500. Friday

  501. night

  502. isn't

  503. it

  504. but really

  505. what David

  506. wants to

  507. say

  508. through all

  509. this

  510. is to

  511. tell us

  512. the truth

  513. about

  514. what's

  515. going

  516. on

  517. and the

  518. fact

  519. that

  520. God's

  521. promises

  522. are there

  523. to hold

  524. us up

  525. even

  526. those times

  527. where we

  528. feel burdened

  529. down

  530. with grief

  531. we feel

  532. burdened

  533. down

  534. like

  535. everyone

  536. is against

  537. us

  538. but God

  539. sees us

  540. there

  541. God

  542. knows

  543. that

  544. we're

  545. there

  546. and he's

  547. able to

  548. lift us

  549. up

  550. and that's

  551. what he's

  552. able to

  553. guard us

  554. against

  555. knowing

  556. what is

  557. out in

  558. the world

  559. so

  560. the point

  561. of all

  562. that

  563. as I

  564. went

  565. through

  566. it

  567. was

  568. to cling

  569. to the

  570. words

  571. of God

  572. because

  573. that's

  574. what's

  575. what's

  576. whole

  577. that's

  578. what's

  579. pure

  580. and true

  581. and it's

  582. the words

  583. of men

  584. that are

  585. not

  586. and it's

  587. so easy

  588. to think

  589. about what

  590. men say

  591. and what

  592. they feel

  593. and how

  594. you know

  595. they affect

  596. us

  597. how we're

  598. doing

  599. well

  600. towards

  601. men

  602. but to

  603. keep

  604. God's

  605. word

  606. in view

  607. as what

  608. truly

  609. matters

  610. is

  611. will benefit

  612. us the

  613. most
