  1. I've talked to enough Christians in my life to realize that at some point in their life,

  2. many of them feel a gap between what they think, what they believe, and how they feel.

  3. And they're left wondering why their life looks so different from the Christian life that the Bible speaks of.

  4. Didn't Jesus say, John 7, whoever believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

  5. Well, then why does my life just feel like a trickle at times?

  6. And this sense of disconnect could cause discouragement, frustration, even cynicism.

  7. And John 15 teaches us to connect those dots, to bridge that gap, that disconnect.

  8. And the key to all of it, according to this passage, is abiding in the love of Christ.

  9. And so it teaches us this passage that abiding in the love of Christ enables us to bear enduring witness amidst the hatred of the world.

  10. And there's really simple but very profound truths that can transform your life in this passage.

  11. And I'm going to cover those in three parts.

  12. First, talk about the Christian love.

  13. Secondly, about the worldly hatred.

  14. And lastly, about the enduring witness that we're supposed to bear in light of that.

  15. And the first part is going to be the most discernment.

  16. So when I say second point, 30 minutes in, 30 minutes in, don't be discouraged.

  17. I will not be going on for another hour or so.

  18. Okay.

  19. So Jesus starts off saying in verse 1, read with me,

  20. I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser.

  21. So catch that.

  22. Jesus doesn't say that I am the vine.

  23. He says I am the true vine.

  24. This is significant because it suggests that there are false vines that people cling to but give no life, as Jesus does.

  25. And in the Old Testament, the vine is frequently a symbol for Israel, the covenant people of God.

  26. So for example, in Isaiah chapter 5, verses 1 to 7, God speaks of how he planted Israel as his vineyard and Judah as his choice vines, yet they bore no fruit.

    Isaiah 5:1–7

  27. I mean, they did bear fruit, but they bore wild grapes that were useless for consumption.

  28. And similarly, in Psalm 80, 14 to 16, he prays to God, the psalmist,

  29. Watch over this vine, the root of your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself.

  30. So this one, this prophecy is really significant because not only does it have a picture of the vine representing Israel,

  31. and it also calls him son, it calls Israel his son who has been rejected.

  32. And then it prophesies about a son of man that God has raised up, that God will raise up for himself,

  33. and that points to Jesus, who calls himself most frequently in the Gospel of John as the son of man.

  34. And so then Jesus is saying, when he says, I am the true vine,

  35. he's the one that fulfills what Israel, God's people, could not fulfill.

  36. He's the vine now, and through abiding in him, being in him,

  37. then we become the people of God through Jesus Christ.

  38. So then if Jesus is the true vine, the Father is the vine dresser.

  39. So he says in verse 2, and the vine dresser does two things.

  40. The first thing he does is, every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away.

  41. So he cuts off the dead branches and throws them away in order to give more room for the living branches,

  42. so that they may thrive.

  43. And note that these dead branches that the Father takes away are described already as in Jesus.

  44. Let me sketch that.

  45. So, and I don't think that means that we could, you know,

  46. tease out a controversial theological point from that minor detail and analogy,

  47. because it's an analogy, right?

  48. So I don't think that means that genuine Christians who had real faith in Jesus are going to be taken away.

  49. I don't think that's what it's saying here,

  50. because John said clearly in chapter 6, verses 37 to 38,

  51. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

  52. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

  53. but raise it up on the last day, right?

  54. So Jesus will not lose any of the people that the Father has entrusted to him.

  55. And the fact that in verse 6 that they're taken away and burned

  56. suggests that they're not the people that God, the Father gave to Jesus.

  57. But now, we shouldn't rationalize it away and let the verse lose its force,

  58. because it still serves as a real warning for us.

  59. It's possible for someone to have all the external signs of being in Christ,

  60. yet not be in Christ, be unregenerate.

  61. There could be baptism, church attendance, moral living.

  62. But if the fruit are just external accretions,

  63. things like fruit that's stapled onto a tree,

  64. not organic internal growth that Jesus is speaking of,

  65. then that's not real fruit.

  66. The fruit will not last,

  67. and the branches will die,

  68. and they will be taken away.

  69. And Scripture in many places speaks of

  70. those who experience some degree of familiarity with Christ

  71. and connection to Christ,

  72. but nevertheless fail to persevere.

  73. And by doing so,

  74. betray their spiritual alienation,

  75. the fact that they were never in Christ.

  76. So that should serve as a real warning for us.

  77. And then now, first,

  78. God the Father, as a vine,

  79. just takes away the branches that do not bear fruit.

  80. And then he does a second thing,

  81. and he deals with those branches that are bearing fruit.

  82. And that's surprising,

  83. because you would think,

  84. well, if the branch is bearing fruit,

  85. just let it be, right?

  86. You leave it alone.

  87. Don't fix it unless it's broken, right?

  88. But Jesus doesn't do that.

  89. He says,

  90. the Father, the vine dresser doesn't do that.

  91. Because if it's,

  92. it says,

  93. and every branch that does bear fruit,

  94. he prunes,

  95. that it may bear more fruit.

  96. So the vine dressers prune their plants,

  97. meaning they cut off branches and buds

  98. that are diseased or structurally unsound,

  99. so that the plant thrives,

  100. it grows even more

  101. and bears even more fruit.

  102. And God the Father does this.

  103. He prunes every single branch that bears fruit.

  104. Every branch that's bearing fruit,

  105. he prunes it.

  106. It may bear more fruit.

  107. And notice that there's no timetable here.

  108. It doesn't say the pruning will sometime be done,

  109. and he will not be pruning you anymore.

  110. It doesn't say that he will be so abundant

  111. in your fruit bearing

  112. that you're not going to have to,

  113. need to bear more fruit anymore.

  114. The growth is constant,

  115. and the pruning is to the end of our life.

  116. He prunes always so that we could bear more fruit.

  117. As J.C. Ryle writes in one of his books,

  118. the Christian life is not like animal life,

  119. which grows up to a certain point and stops,

  120. whether it is like plant life,

  121. which grows and keeps growing

  122. in strength and vigor all its days.

  123. That means we can't ever be complacent

  124. or content with our level of growth or fruitfulness.

  125. We have to be like Paul who says in Philippians 3,

  126. not that I've already been made perfect,

  127. but he presses on toward the goal to win the prize

  128. for which God has called him heavenward in Christ Jesus.

  129. That's always, we're always pressing on,

  130. always growing, always abiding more deeply

  131. so that we can bear more fruit.

  132. So if you are then not making daily strides

  133. to abide in Christ and bear more fruit,

  134. then you are complacent.

  135. And if you think that you've already arrived

  136. and you don't need to grow anymore or bear more fruit,

  137. then you're conceited.

  138. And neither is an option for the Christian.

  139. And of course, pruning involves cutting away,

  140. and it's painful.

  141. No matter how sinful or noxious or extraneous

  142. the part that God trims from our lives,

  143. it's painful.

  144. And there's a wordplay here in this passage

  145. between the word takes away and prunes in verse 2.

  146. The words have the same root.

  147. And so the purpose is fundamentally different.

  148. The action's similar.

  149. It involves cutting and taking away.

  150. And recognizing this truth

  151. will provide no small comfort for us

  152. when we're experiencing the pain of pruning.

  153. It's because God is jealous for our love.

  154. He will not stand any competing affections in our lives,

  155. the idolatries of our hearts.

  156. So he will prune, trim, cut away,

  157. anything that prevents, hampers our growth.

  158. A divestment must precede his investment.

  159. A sort of death must take place

  160. before there can be new life.

  161. Just as the Heavenly Father disciplines

  162. his legitimate children,

  163. the Heavenly fine dresser trims.

  164. He prunes the branches that bear fruit

  165. so that they bear more fruit.

  166. So maybe some of you are in that stage

  167. where you could recall

  168. some painful removal of something in your life.

  169. Well then that should help you realize

  170. that it's not a sign of God's absence

  171. that you're experiencing that

  172. or his lack of care.

  173. But it's his painstaking care for you.

  174. That's why you are being pruned

  175. and you are being trimmed.

  176. And what is the fruitfulness

  177. that Jesus speaks of?

  178. What are the fruits?

  179. So Jesus said in John 4, 36,

  180. Already the one who reaps

  181. is receiving wages

  182. and gathering fruit for eternal life

  183. so that sower and reaper

  184. may rejoice together.

  185. And in John 12, 24,

  186. he said,

  187. Jesus said,

  188. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  189. unless a grain of wheat

  190. falls into the earth and dies,

  191. it remains alone.

  192. But if it dies,

  193. it bears much fruit.

  194. So the fruit,

  195. in both of those contexts,

  196. the other two occasions

  197. where the word is used

  198. in the Gospel of John

  199. refer to the fruit of witness.

  200. Demonstrating and proclaiming

  201. the good news of Jesus.

  202. That's the fruit

  203. that Jesus is speaking of.

  204. And the harvest of disciples,

  205. new disciples that come after that.

  206. So it's not referring just to the harvest,

  207. but also to that whole witness.

  208. And that makes sense

  209. of this immediate context as well

  210. because Jesus had said

  211. in chapter 14,

  212. we talked about this last week

  213. or a couple weeks ago,

  214. that whoever believes in me

  215. will also do the works that I do

  216. and greater works than these

  217. will he do.

  218. And these greater works,

  219. we learn that,

  220. are the works of witness,

  221. witnessing to Jesus Christ.

  222. And now,

  223. after this passage about the vine,

  224. Jesus will once again return

  225. to the theme of witnessing

  226. with the help of the Holy Spirit.

  227. So that's what he has in the view here,

  228. the fruit bearing,

  229. bearing witness to Jesus.

  230. And he continues

  231. to talk about this in verse 3.

  232. Already,

  233. you are clean

  234. because of the word

  235. that I have spoken to you.

  236. Lest we think that

  237. this focus on fruit bearing

  238. means that we're not going to be accepted

  239. by Jesus

  240. or we're not cleansed by him

  241. unless we bear fruit,

  242. he tells us,

  243. you're already clean

  244. because of the word

  245. that I have spoken to you.

  246. And the word clean

  247. is spelled almost exactly

  248. the same way

  249. as the word prunes.

  250. Again,

  251. there's a word play there

  252. in verse 2.

  253. It sounds similar.

  254. And so parallel,

  255. it reinforces the connection

  256. between the two.

  257. It's those who are already clean

  258. that God prunes.

  259. He doesn't prune you

  260. to make you clean.

  261. You're already clean in Jesus.

  262. So that recalls

  263. what Jesus told his disciples.

  264. Those who are already clean

  265. do not need to,

  266. you know,

  267. take a bath.

  268. They only need to wash their feet.

  269. You guys remember that?

  270. So Jesus' word

  271. is the message

  272. he proclaims and embodies.

  273. And it's by believing

  274. that word

  275. that we are cleansed.

  276. And it's those who are clean

  277. that God prunes

  278. for even greater

  279. faithfulness.

  280. So fruitfulness,

  281. then,

  282. is the evidence

  283. of our cleansing.

  284. It's not the basis

  285. for our cleansing.

  286. Then fruit bearing

  287. is clearly important,

  288. right,

  289. because it's the evidence

  290. of our prior cleansing.

  291. But let me point out

  292. the fact that

  293. nowhere in this passage

  294. does Jesus tell us

  295. to bear fruit.

  296. There's no command here

  297. that says bear fruit.

  298. Read what Jesus says

  299. in verse 4 to 5.

  300. Verse 4 to 5.

  301. Abide in me

  302. and I in you.

  303. As the branch

  304. cannot bear fruit

  305. by itself

  306. unless it abides

  307. in the vine,

  308. neither can you

  309. unless you abide

  310. in me.

  311. I am the vine,

  312. you are the branches.

  313. Whoever abides in me

  314. and I in him,

  315. he it is

  316. that bears much fruit.

  317. For apart from me

  318. you can do nothing.

  319. See,

  320. fruit bearing

  321. is descriptive.

  322. It's not prescriptive.

  323. It's the abiding

  324. that is commanded,

  325. not fruit bearing.

  326. He doesn't tell us

  327. to bear a lot of fruit.

  328. He tells us simply

  329. to abide in him

  330. because abiding in Christ

  331. is the cause

  332. and fruit bearing

  333. is simply the byproduct

  334. of that abiding.

  335. That means we can't

  336. as Christians

  337. manufacture fruit.

  338. The fruits are rather

  339. an organic byproduct

  340. of our abiding in Jesus.

  341. So then that means

  342. we shouldn't be obsessed

  343. with judging our fruits,

  344. examining ourselves

  345. to see whether we're

  346. doing what Christ

  347. calls us to do.

  348. Rather,

  349. we assess our faithfulness.

  350. Are we abiding in Jesus?

  351. Are we faithful to him?

  352. Are we clinging to Jesus?

  353. Because apart from him

  354. we can do nothing.

  355. In the Old Testament,

  356. the word abide

  357. is used consistently

  358. to refer to God

  359. and his word.

  360. And that characteristically

  361. contrasts the eternal God

  362. who abides,

  363. remains,

  364. is unchanging

  365. and the world

  366. that is temporal

  367. and transitory

  368. that's changing.

  369. And so Jesus

  370. points to the fact

  371. that he remains,

  372. the same word,

  373. abides forever

  374. in John 8, 35, 36

  375. as a proof

  376. of his divine sonship.

  377. And last chapter

  378. in chapter 14,

  379. the word dwell

  380. was used.

  381. It's the same word

  382. as the word abide

  383. to refer to

  384. the triune God's dwelling

  385. in us,

  386. the Father,

  387. Son,

  388. and the Holy Spirit.

  389. And in that same way

  390. Jesus calls us

  391. abide in me

  392. and I in you.

  393. It's pointing to

  394. a permanence,

  395. kind of an inviolable

  396. union.

  397. But how exactly

  398. do we do that?

  399. How do we abide?

  400. I think there's some clues

  401. in the Gospel of John.

  402. In chapter 6,

  403. 54 to 56,

  404. Jesus said,

  405. whoever feeds

  406. on my flesh

  407. and drinks

  408. my blood

  409. abides in me

  410. and has eternal life

  411. and I will raise him up

  412. on the last day.

  413. And then earlier

  414. in that same chapter

  415. Jesus explained

  416. that feeding

  417. on his flesh

  418. and drinking his blood

  419. involves looking

  420. on the Son

  421. and believing in him.

  422. So then,

  423. to abide in Christ

  424. is to believe

  425. in the person

  426. and work of Jesus Christ.

  427. So that's one way

  428. we abide in Christ.

  429. We cling to him

  430. that the means,

  431. the faith is the means

  432. by which

  433. take hold of him

  434. and cling to him

  435. and abide in him.

  436. And that's what

  437. Paul prays for

  438. for the Ephesians church

  439. in chapter 3

  440. that according

  441. to the riches

  442. of his glory

  443. he may grant you

  444. to be strengthened

  445. with power

  446. through his spirit

  447. in your inner being

  448. so that Christ

  449. may dwell

  450. in your hearts

  451. through faith

  452. that you being rooted

  453. and grounded in love

  454. may have strength

  455. to comprehend

  456. with all the saints

  457. what is the breadth

  458. and length

  459. and height

  460. and depth

  461. and to know

  462. the love of Christ

  463. that surpasses knowledge

  464. that you may be filled

  465. with all the fullness

  466. of God.

  467. And I don't know

  468. if you ever wondered

  469. Paul's writing

  470. to believers

  471. in that context

  472. so by definition

  473. they already have

  474. God dwelling in them

  475. so why does he pray

  476. for Christ

  477. to dwell in their hearts?

  478. It's because

  479. even though

  480. through our initial faith

  481. and being born again

  482. yes, God,

  483. Christ does dwell

  484. in our hearts

  485. once and for all

  486. but our subjective

  487. experience

  488. of that objective reality

  489. is not perfect.

  490. We grow.

  491. I think of

  492. a couple

  493. that gets married

  494. right

  495. and they

  496. once they're married

  497. they say the vows

  498. they're married

  499. right

  500. I mean that's

  501. they don't have to do anything

  502. they don't have to live

  503. another day together

  504. they're married

  505. at that moment

  506. when they say the vows

  507. and perform the ceremony

  508. they're married

  509. they're now a union

  510. that's an objective reality

  511. but that's not to say

  512. that 60 years later

  513. of faithful marriage

  514. when that couple

  515. is now able to

  516. finish each other's sentences

  517. anticipate each other's needs

  518. and to care for one another

  519. in ways that no one else

  520. in the world can

  521. we could say

  522. their union has grown

  523. the communion

  524. which is the experience

  525. of the objective union

  526. has grown

  527. right

  528. so that's what Paul

  529. prays for

  530. right

  531. abide

  532. so that Christ may dwell

  533. in your heart

  534. so then what does that

  535. look like

  536. let me give you some examples

  537. abiding in Christ

  538. means believing

  539. that we are in Christ

  540. and that Christ is in us

  541. right

  542. so then when you feel

  543. discouraged

  544. and defeated by sin

  545. and Satan accuses you

  546. and tells you

  547. that you are a failure

  548. and a disappointment

  549. and he lies to you

  550. that God has abandoned you

  551. you are not

  552. worthy to approach him

  553. then you remember

  554. that you are in Christ

  555. for in Christ Jesus

  556. you are all sons of God

  557. and through faith

  558. for as many of you

  559. as you were baptized

  560. into Christ

  561. you put on Christ

  562. we have the righteousness

  563. the impenetrable armor

  564. of Christ

  565. covering us

  566. we have put him on

  567. we are in Christ

  568. Christ is our surrogate

  569. in that court

  570. of divine justice

  571. he is our advocate

  572. our defense attorney

  573. and he has never

  574. lost the case

  575. so then

  576. we believe

  577. that we are in Christ

  578. and we don't let

  579. Satan hold us down

  580. in guilt and shame

  581. as if he had any claim

  582. on us

  583. he has no claim

  584. on us

  585. just as he has no claim

  586. on Jesus

  587. as he said

  588. in chapter 14

  589. 30

  590. and similarly

  591. that when you are

  592. daunted

  593. and by circumstances

  594. present circumstances

  595. maybe and future

  596. prospects

  597. and you feel inadequate

  598. and powerless

  599. to fulfill

  600. God's call

  601. on your life

  602. then you remember

  603. the words of Galatians

  604. 2 20

  605. you remember

  606. that Christ

  607. is in you

  608. I have been crucified

  609. with Christ

  610. it is no longer

  611. I who live

  612. but Christ

  613. who lives in me

  614. Christ is in you

  615. the almighty God

  616. the son of God

  617. the Lord of creation

  618. is in you

  619. and so we can say

  620. along with Paul

  621. we can do all things

  622. through Christ

  623. who strengthens us

  624. and so that's

  625. a picture of

  626. abiding in him

  627. through believing

  628. and this requires

  629. daily renewal

  630. because every day

  631. we wake up

  632. in the morning

  633. the default state

  634. that we wake up with

  635. is hey

  636. I need to go out there

  637. and prove myself

  638. I need to go out there

  639. and make a name

  640. for myself

  641. I need to go out there

  642. and win people's

  643. affections

  644. do you really love me

  645. do you really think

  646. I'm great

  647. that's the default

  648. pattern

  649. the current

  650. of this world

  651. that's what we

  652. wake up to

  653. but we cling

  654. instead to Christ

  655. and his

  656. words over us

  657. so that we can be

  658. secure in who

  659. he says he is

  660. that we are in him

  661. that Christ is in us

  662. and that we are

  663. in Christ

  664. so then believing

  665. in Christ

  666. that's one way

  667. we're supposed to

  668. abide in him

  669. but that's not

  670. the only way

  671. that Jesus mentions

  672. mentions in verses

  673. 9 to 11

  674. as the father

  675. has loved me

  676. so have I loved you

  677. abide in my love

  678. if you keep

  679. my commandments

  680. you will abide

  681. in my love

  682. just as I have

  683. kept my father's

  684. commandments

  685. and abide

  686. in his love

  687. so another

  688. indispensable way

  689. in which we abide

  690. in Christ

  691. is through obedience

  692. so faith

  693. and obedience

  694. this is what

  695. John Calvin wrote

  696. of in his

  697. Institutes of

  698. Christian Religion

  699. it says

  700. all right knowledge

  701. of God

  702. is born of

  703. obedience

  704. it's in obeying

  705. God's will

  706. that we abide

  707. in his love

  708. because in obedience

  709. the obedience

  710. itself shapes

  711. our inclinations

  712. it affects

  713. our hearts

  714. and increases

  715. our faith

  716. and just as

  717. disobedience

  718. every step

  719. of disobedience

  720. desensitizes

  721. our conscience

  722. and hardens

  723. our hearts

  724. every obedience

  725. softens our hearts

  726. and sharpens

  727. our conscience

  728. when we obey

  729. we sense

  730. God's pleasure

  731. when we obey

  732. we discern

  733. the goodness

  734. and wisdom

  735. of God

  736. in his commandments

  737. when we obey

  738. we become

  739. more like him

  740. and draw closer

  741. to him

  742. through that process

  743. and what exactly

  744. are the commandments

  745. that Jesus

  746. wants us to keep

  747. he sums it all up

  748. in verses 12

  749. to 13

  750. this is my

  751. commandment

  752. that you love

  753. one another

  754. as I have loved

  755. you

  756. greater love

  757. has no one

  758. than this

  759. that someone

  760. lay down

  761. his life

  762. for his

  763. friends

  764. we abide

  765. in the love

  766. of Christ

  767. particularly

  768. by obeying

  769. this new

  770. commandment

  771. that sums

  772. it up

  773. to love

  774. one another

  775. that's why

  776. John writes

  777. in his first

  778. epistle

  779. chapter 4

  780. if we love

  781. one another

  782. God abides

  783. in us

  784. and his love

  785. is perfected

  786. in us

  787. you can't

  788. have a relationship

  789. with the king

  790. without being a part

  791. and having a relationship

  792. with his kingdom

  793. you can't claim

  794. to have a relationship

  795. with Christ

  796. who is the head

  797. of the church

  798. and ignore

  799. the body

  800. of Christ

  801. which is the church

  802. you can't have

  803. a relationship

  804. with Christ

  805. who is the bridegroom

  806. and ignore

  807. his bride

  808. the church

  809. the clearest

  810. proof

  811. of your love

  812. for God

  813. is not how you

  814. subjectively feel

  815. in your heart

  816. it's not how great

  817. your devotion

  818. was that morning

  819. the true test

  820. of your devotion

  821. to God

  822. how you love him

  823. is how you love

  824. the people around you

  825. the church

  826. so let me ask you

  827. are you concerned

  828. for the welfare

  829. of the people

  830. sitting around you

  831. do you mourn

  832. their sin

  833. are you burdened

  834. by their sin

  835. you pray for them

  836. do their concerns

  837. drive you

  838. to your knees

  839. do you care

  840. about them enough

  841. to want to see them

  842. to meet with them

  843. regularly

  844. this is my commandment

  845. that you love

  846. one another

  847. as I have loved you

  848. and the standard

  849. for this love

  850. that God calls us to

  851. is not our love

  852. but it's Christ's love

  853. his sacrificial love

  854. laying down

  855. his own life

  856. he has the cross

  857. in view

  858. are we willing

  859. to love each other

  860. sacrificially

  861. in that way

  862. and I don't want

  863. you to assume

  864. just because

  865. John

  866. has such an emphasis

  867. on this

  868. for love for one another

  869. I don't want you

  870. to assume from this

  871. that then we're only

  872. supposed to love

  873. fellow Christians

  874. we're not supposed

  875. to love our neighbors

  876. because Jesus calls us

  877. to love our neighbors

  878. and he calls us

  879. even to love

  880. our enemies

  881. he talks about it

  882. in Matthew 5

  883. if you love

  884. only those who love you

  885. what reward

  886. will you get

  887. are not even

  888. the tax collectors

  889. doing that

  890. he says

  891. if you greet

  892. only your brothers

  893. then what are you

  894. doing more than others

  895. do not even

  896. the pagans

  897. do that

  898. he says

  899. but

  900. our love for one another

  901. comes into special

  902. focus here

  903. because that means

  904. by which abide

  905. in Christ

  906. but even in that

  907. Jesus reveals

  908. his concern

  909. for the lost

  910. because what was

  911. the purpose

  912. of this abiding

  913. is so that we

  914. may be fruitful

  915. and what was the fruit

  916. it's the fruit

  917. of witness

  918. so that people

  919. may see

  920. so that our abiding

  921. can produce the works

  922. that authenticate

  923. the word

  924. that we proclaim

  925. the gospel

  926. of Jesus Christ

  927. so then

  928. our love for God

  929. flows

  930. into our love

  931. for one another

  932. and our love

  933. for one another

  934. flows

  935. into our love

  936. for neighbors

  937. so to summarize

  938. then there are two ways

  939. to abide

  940. in the love of Christ

  941. first is faith

  942. and second

  943. obedience

  944. as Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  945. writes about this

  946. in his book

  947. Cost of Discipleship

  948. only those who

  949. obey can believe

  950. and only those

  951. who believe

  952. can obey

  953. right

  954. if we emphasize

  955. only the

  956. faith

  957. then we'll end up

  958. with cheap grace

  959. and lawlessness

  960. if we emphasize

  961. only the obedience

  962. then we

  963. end up with

  964. works righteousness

  965. salvation by works

  966. and legalism

  967. it's only by holding

  968. those two things

  969. together

  970. that we can abide

  971. in Jesus

  972. and that's

  973. the simple

  974. but profound

  975. truth that

  976. that song

  977. sings about

  978. trust and obey

  979. for there's no other

  980. way to be happy

  981. in Jesus

  982. but to trust

  983. and obey

  984. and for the Christian

  985. this abiding

  986. is not a chore

  987. it's because

  988. it's a joy

  989. Jesus says

  990. in verse 11

  991. these things

  992. I've spoken to you

  993. that my joy

  994. may be in you

  995. and that your joy

  996. may be full

  997. because it's

  998. our relationship

  999. with Jesus

  1000. when we go

  1001. to God's word

  1002. we don't just go

  1003. so that we can

  1004. check off that

  1005. box on our

  1006. reading plan

  1007. for that day

1008. we go to God's word

  1009. because we know

  1010. in it we encounter

  1011. Jesus

  1012. and he speaks

  1013. to us

  1014. we pray

  1015. not just

  1016. regurgitating words

  1017. that we've

  1018. familiarized

  1019. ourselves with

  1020. over the years

  1021. no we are

  1022. conversing

  1023. with our Lord

  1024. and Savior

  1025. Jesus Christ

  1026. it's that

  1027. relationship

  1028. that gives

  1029. value

  1030. that motivates

  1031. that enables

  1032. our abiding

  1033. that's why

  1034. it's joyful

  1035. for us

  1036. it's not a chore

  1037. and those

  1038. who abide

  1039. in Jesus

  1040. get to enjoy

  1041. the wonderful

  1042. privilege

  1043. of being called

  1044. his friends

  1045. verses 14

  1046. to 15

  1047. you are

  1048. my friends

  1049. if you do

  1050. what I command

  1051. you

  1052. no longer

  1053. do I call

  1054. you servants

  1055. for the servant

  1056. does not know

  1057. what his master

  1058. is doing

  1059. but I have

  1060. called you

  1061. friends

  1062. for all

  1063. that I have

  1064. heard from

  1065. my father

  1066. I have

  1067. made known

  1068. to you

  1069. this doesn't

  1070. mean that we

  1071. become

  1072. friends of

  1073. Christ

  1074. when we

  1075. obey his

  1076. commandments

  1077. it means

  1078. that those

  1079. who are his

  1080. friends

  1081. obey his

  1082. commandments

  1083. it's what

  1084. characterizes

  1085. those who

  1086. are his

  1087. friends

  1088. and Jesus

  1089. says that

  1090. he doesn't

  1091. call them

  1092. servants

  1093. but friends

  1094. because a

  1095. servant does

  1096. not know

  1097. the master's

  1098. will

  1099. if you

  1100. imagine a

  1101. dictator

  1102. or a

  1103. master

  1104. he has

  1105. a servant

  1106. that does

  1107. his bidding

  1108. he doesn't

  1109. tell the

  1110. servant

  1111. why he

  1112. wants to

  1113. do

  1114. something

  1115. he just

  1116. needs to

  1117. tell him

  1118. what

  1119. that's

  1120. what a

  1121. master

  1122. does

  1123. he doesn't

  1124. divulge

  1125. his thoughts

  1126. inner thoughts

  1127. his plans

  1128. his desires

  1129. to his

  1130. servant

  1131. he just

  1132. says no

  1133. go do

  1134. this

  1135. but Jesus

  1136. doesn't do

  1137. that with

  1138. us

  1139. he says

  1140. no I

  1141. have called

  1142. you

  1143. friends

  1144. so he

  1145. reveals his

  1146. will to

  1147. us

  1148. he shares

  1149. his thoughts

  1150. and plans

  1151. with us

  1152. and he

  1153. involves us

  1154. even though

  1155. we're just

  1156. creatures

  1157. and he's

  1158. the creator

  1159. he involves

  1160. us in

  1161. his plans

  1162. keeps us

  1163. in the

  1164. know

  1165. longer do

  1166. I call

  1167. you servants

  1168. but I

  1169. have called

  1170. you

  1171. friends

  1172. but let's

  1173. not take

  1174. that a

  1175. little too

  1176. far

  1177. I've seen

  1178. that happen

  1179. also

  1180. and that

  1181. doesn't mean

  1182. we can go

  1183. around calling

  1184. Jesus our

  1185. homeboy

  1186. or whatever

  1187. else might

  1188. be

  1189. right

  1190. it's

  1191. that's

  1192. the meaning

  1193. to God

  1194. because it's

  1195. interesting that

  1196. in scripture

  1197. God sometimes

  1198. calls his

  1199. people his

  1200. friends like

  1201. in this

  1202. passage

  1203. but the

  1204. converse of

  1205. that statement

  1206. is never

  1207. found in

  1208. all of

  1209. scripture

  1210. Abraham is

  1211. described as

  1212. God's

  1213. friend

  1214. Moses is

  1215. described as

  1216. God's

  1217. friend

  1218. Jesus calls

  1219. Lazarus

  1220. his friend

  1221. but none

  1222. of them

  1223. ever call

  1224. God

  1225. their friend

  1226. it's almost

  1227. as scripture

  1228. is reluctant

  1229. to bring

  1230. God down

  1231. to our

  1232. level as

  1233. equals

  1234. it speaks

  1235. of God's

  1236. condescension

  1237. but never

  1238. presumes on

  1239. this gracious

  1240. overture of

  1241. God

  1242. so then

  1243. yes Christ

  1244. graciously

  1245. calls us

  1246. his friends

  1247. but be sure

  1248. to note that

  1249. this is

  1250. as a

  1251. king

  1252. who

  1253. condescends

  1254. to his

  1255. subjects

  1256. but that's

  1257. what makes

  1258. this gesture

  1259. even more

  1260. amazing

  1261. right

  1262. that he

  1263. offers his

  1264. friendship

  1265. to us

  1266. even though

  1267. we are

  1268. not his

  1269. equal

  1270. this is an

  1271. amazing

  1272. revelation

  1273. and whenever

  1274. in John

  1275. Jesus makes

  1276. an amazing

  1277. promise

  1278. revelation

  1279. like this

  1280. he

  1281. he

  1282. deflates

  1283. his

  1284. disciples

  1285. balloons

  1286. to make

  1287. sure

  1288. they

  1289. don't

  1290. get

  1291. too

  1292. big

  1293. headed

  1294. and so

  1295. that's

  1296. what

  1297. happens

  1298. in this

  1299. next

  1300. verse

  1301. verse 16

  1302. you

  1303. did not

  1304. choose

  1305. me

  1306. but I

  1307. chose

  1308. you

  1309. and

  1310. appointed

  1311. you

  1312. that

  1313. you

  1314. should

  1315. go

  1316. and

  1317. bear

  1318. fruit

  1319. that

  1320. your

  1321. fruit

  1322. should

  1323. abide

  1324. so

  1325. that

  1326. whatever

  1327. you

  1328. ask

  1329. the

  1330. father

  1331. in my

  1332. name

  1333. he

  1334. may

  1335. give

  1336. it

  1337. to

  1338. you

  1339. note the stark

  1340. contrast between

  1341. this statement

  1342. right and all the

  1343. conditional statements

  1344. in verses 6

  1345. to 7

  1346. right

  1347. if

  1348. anyone does not abide

  1349. in me

  1350. he's thrown away

  1351. like a branch

  1352. and withers

  1353. if

  1354. you abide

  1355. in me

  1356. and my

  1357. words abide

  1358. and you

  1359. ask

  1360. whatever

  1361. you

  1362. wish

  1363. and it

  1364. will

  1365. be

  1366. done

  1367. for

  1368. you

  1369. so

  1370. which

  1371. is

  1372. true

  1373. then

  1374. Jesus

  1375. does

  1376. our

  1377. fruit

  1378. bearing

  1379. depend

  1380. on

  1381. your

  1382. choice

  1383. and

  1384. appointment

  1385. or

  1386. our

  1387. abiding

  1388. the

  1389. answer

  1390. is

  1391. yes

  1392. to

  1393. both

  1394. right

  1395. and

  1396. maybe

  1397. one way

  1398. to

  1399. explain

  1400. that

  1401. or

  1402. frame

  1403. that

  1404. maybe

  1405. is

  1406. by

  1407. thinking

  1408. of

  1409. approximate

  1410. cost

  1411. or

  1412. an

  1413. immediate

  1414. cost

  1415. and

  1416. an

  1417. ultimate

  1418. cost

  1419. right

  1420. we got

  1421. some

  1422. Cornell

  1423. graduates

  1424. here

  1425. the

  1426. ninth

  1427. president

  1428. of

  1429. Cornell

  1430. University

  1431. he's a

  1432. geologist

  1433. Frank

  1434. Rhodes

  1435. used

  1436. this

  1437. amazing

  1438. analogy

  1439. to

  1440. explain

  1441. different

  1442. types

  1443. of

  1444. causes

  1445. he

  1446. asks

  1447. the

  1448. question

  1449. why

  1450. is

  1451. the

  1452. kettle

  1453. boiling

  1454. right

  1455. there's

  1456. two ways

  1457. to

  1458. explain

  1459. that

  1460. right

  1461. one

  1462. way

  1463. to

  1464. explain

  1465. that

  1466. is

  1467. simply

  1468. well

  1469. there's

  1470. energy

  1471. being

  1472. supplied

  1473. to

  1474. that

  1475. kettle

  1476. which

  1477. is

  1478. bringing

  1479. the

  1480. water

  1481. to

  1482. the

  1483. boiling

  1484. point

  1485. that's

  1486. why

  1487. the

  1488. kettle

  1489. is

  1490. boiling

  1491. and

  1492. that's

  1493. a

  1494. very

  1495. true

  1496. and

  1497. correct

  1498. explanation

  1499. but

  1500. there's

  1501. a

  1502. second

  1503. explanation

  1504. the

  1505. kettle

  1506. is

  1507. boiling

  1508. because

  1509. someone

  1510. put it

  1511. on

  1512. to

  1513. make

  1514. a

  1515. cup

  1516. of

  1517. tea

  1518. and

  1519. that's

  1520. a

  1521. very

  1522. valid

  1523. and

  1524. right

  1525. explanation

  1526. of that

  1527. situation

  1528. as well

  1529. right

  1530. and

  1531. they're

  1532. related

  1533. and

  1534. in fact

  1535. we need

  1536. them

  1537. both

  1538. in order

  1539. to make

  1540. sense of

  1541. what's

  1542. happening

  1543. there

  1544. they're

  1545. complementary

  1546. they're

  1547. not

  1548. mutually

  1549. exclusive

  1550. the

  1551. immediate

  1552. cause

  1553. the

  1554. fire

  1555. the

  1556. boiling

  1557. the

  1558. science

  1559. behind

  1560. that

  1561. and

  1562. the

  1563. ultimate

  1564. cause

  1565. the

  1566. man

  1567. behind

  1568. it

  1569. who's

  1570. willing

  1571. to

  1572. boil

  1573. that

  1574. tea

  1575. for

  1576. himself

  1577. and

  1578. so

  1579. we

  1580. could

  1581. think

  1582. of

  1583. that

  1584. this

  1585. way

  1586. here

  1587. yes

  1588. our

  1589. faith

  1590. and

  1591. our

  1592. obedience

  1593. our

  1594. abiding

  1595. and our

  1596. clinging

  1597. to

  1598. Christ

  1599. that's

  1600. the

  1601. immediate

  1602. cause

  1603. the

  1604. proximate

  1605. cause

  1606. that's

  1607. why

  1608. we

  1609. bear

  1610. fruit

  1611. but

  1612. behind

  1613. all

  1614. of

  1615. that

  1616. and

  1617. transcending

  1618. all

  1619. of

  1620. that

  1621. to

  1622. bear

  1623. fruit

  1624. they're

  1625. both

  1626. true

  1627. that's

  1628. why

  1629. he

  1630. calls

  1631. us

  1632. to

  1633. abide

  1634. but

  1635. that

  1636. doesn't

  1637. puff

  1638. us

  1639. up

  1640. or

  1641. make

  1642. us

  1643. arrogant

  1644. because

  1645. we're

  1646. doing

  1647. it

  1648. so

  1649. well

  1650. because

  1651. we

  1652. know

  1653. that

  1654. it's

  1655. God

  1656. who

  1657. chose

  1658. us

  1659. first

  1660. and

  1661. appointed

  1662. us

  1663. for

  1664. that

  1665. and

  1666. this

  1667. is

  1668. particularly

  1669. important

  1670. and

  1671. now

  1672. I'm

  1673. going

  1674. to

  1675. my

  1676. second

  1677. point

  1678. of

  1679. worldly

  1680. hatred

  1681. because

  1682. of

  1683. the

  1684. context

  1685. in which

  1686. we're

  1687. to

  1688. live

  1689. out

  1690. this

  1691. commandment

  1692. verses

  1693. 18

  1694. to

  1695. 21

  1696. please

  1697. follow

  1698. along

  1699. with

  1700. me

  1701. as

  1702. I

  1703. read

  1704. if

  1705. the

  1706. world

  1707. hates

  1708. you

  1709. know

  1710. that

  1711. it

  1712. has

  1713. hated

  1714. me

  1715. before

  1716. it

  1717. hated

  1718. you

  1719. if

  1720. you

  1721. were

  1722. of

  1723. the

  1724. world

  1725. the

  1726. world

  1727. would

  1728. love

  1729. you

  1730. as

  1731. its

  1732. own

  1733. but

  1734. because

  1735. you

  1736. are

  1737. not

  1738. of

  1739. the

  1740. world

  1741. but

  1742. I

  1743. chose

  1744. you

  1745. out

  1746. of

  1747. the

  1748. world

  1749. therefore

  1750. the

  1751. world

  1752. hates

  1753. you

  1754. remember

  1755. the

  1756. word

  1757. that

  1758. I

  1759. said

  1760. to

  1761. you

  1762. servant

  1763. is

  1764. not

  1765. greater

  1766. than

  1767. his

  1768. master

  1769. if

  1770. they

  1771. persecuted

  1772. me

  1773. they

  1774. will

  1775. persecute

  1776. you

  1777. also

  1778. if

  1779. they

  1780. kept

  1781. my

  1782. word

  1783. they

  1784. will

  1785. also

  1786. keep

  1787. yours

  1788. but

  1789. all

  1790. these

  1791. things

  1792. they

  1793. will

  1794. do

  1795. to

  1796. you

  1797. on

  1798. account

  1799. of

  1800. my

  1801. name

  1802. because

  1803. they

  1804. do

  1805. not

  1806. know

  1807. him

  1808. who

  1809. sent

  1810. me

  1811. Jesus

  1812. taught us

  1813. in

  1814. John 7

  1815. that

  1816. ultimately

  1817. the

  1818. world

  1819. hates

  1820. Jesus

  1821. because

  1822. Jesus

  1823. testifies

  1824. to the

  1825. world

  1826. that

  1827. its

  1828. works

  1829. are

  1830. evil

  1831. Jesus

  1832. exposes

  1833. the

  1834. darkness

  1835. of

  1836. the

  1837. world

  1838. because

  1839. he's

  1840. the

  1841. light

  1842. of

  1843. the

  1844. world

  1845. and

  1846. that's

  1847. why

  1848. and

  1849. because

  1850. the

  1851. world

  1852. hated

  1853. him

  1854. and

  1855. they

  1856. sent

  1857. him

  1858. to

  1859. the

  1860. cross

  1861. he

  1862. says

  1863. you

  1864. are

  1865. no

  1866. greater

  1867. than

  1868. me

  1869. I'm

  1870. your

  1871. master

  1872. if

  1873. they

  1874. treated

  1875. the

  1876. master

  1877. in

  1878. this

  1879. way

  1880. certainly

  1881. the

  1882. servants

  1883. will

  1884. be

  1885. treated

  1886. in

  1887. that

  1888. way

  1889. and

  1890. if

  1891. you're

  1892. a

  1893. skeptic

  1894. and

  1895. you

  1896. don't

  1897. believe

  1898. in

  1899. Jesus

  1900. yet

  1901. you

  1902. don't

  1903. belong

  1904. to

  1905. him

  1906. and

  1907. you're

  1908. part

  1909. of

  1910. this

  1911. world

  1912. and

  1913. at

  1914. this

  1915. point

  1916. you

  1917. might

  1918. be

  1919. like

  1920. oh

  1921. whoa

  1922. that

  1923. sounds

  1924. a

  1925. little

  1926. bit

  1927. overblown

  1928. what

  1929. do

  1930. you

  1931. mean

  1932. hatred

  1933. persecution

  1934. I

  1935. mean

  1936. that's

  1937. not

  1938. what

  1939. at

  1940. all

  1941. I'm

  1942. thinking

  1943. but

  1944. let me

  1945. tell

  1946. you

  1947. that

  1948. the

  1949. world

  1950. hatred

  1951. here

  1952. is

  1953. not

  1954. so

  1955. much

  1956. referring

  1957. to

  1958. a

  1959. vehement

  1960. emotion

  1961. but

  1962. rather

  1963. it's

  1964. referring

  1965. to

  1966. that

  1967. fundamental

  1968. opposition

  1969. that

  1970. the

  1971. world

  1972. is

  1973. diametrically

  1974. opposed

  1975. to

  1976. Jesus

  1977. and

  1978. his

  1979. cause

  1980. and

  1981. Jesus

  1982. teaches

  1983. in

  1984. Matthew

  1985. 12

  1986. that

  1987. whoever

  1988. is

  1989. not

  1990. with

  1991. him

  1992. is

  1993. against

  1994. him

  1995. there's

  1996. no

  1997. other

  1998. option

  1999. there's

  2000. no

  2001. middle

  2002. ground

  2003. and

  2004. what

  2005. divides

  2006. the

  2007. world

  2008. is

  2009. his

  2010. word

  2011. it

  2012. says

  2013. in

  2014. verse

  2015. 20

  2016. if

  2017. they

  2018. persecuted

  2019. me

  2020. they

  2021. will

  2022. also

  2023. persecute

  2024. you

  2025. if

  2026. they

  2027. kept

  2028. my

  2029. word

  2030. they

  2031. will

  2032. also

  2033. keep

  2034. yours

  2035. and

  2036. you

  2037. have

  2038. this

  2039. invitation

  2040. in

  2041. front

  2042. of

  2043. you

  2044. to

  2045. keep

  2046. his

  2047. word

  2048. how

  2049. will

  2050. you

  2051. divide

  2052. around

  2053. his

  2054. proclamation

  2055. that

  2056. he

  2057. is

  2058. the

  2059. lamb

  2060. of

  2061. God

  2062. who

  2063. takes

  2064. away

  2065. the

  2066. sin

  2067. of

  2068. the

  2069. world

  2070. that

  2071. he

  2072. is

  2073. the

  2074. son

  2075. of

  2076. God

  2077. who

  2078. has

  2079. come

  2080. into

  2081. the

  2082. world

  2083. to

  2084. save

  2085. sinners

  2086. and

  2087. because

  2088. Jesus

  2089. has

  2090. borne

  2091. such

  2092. extraordinary

  2093. and

  2094. unprecedented

  2095. witness

  2096. we have

  2097. a

  2098. greater

  2099. burden

  2100. of

  2101. responsibility

  2102. on us

  2103. to

  2104. respond

  2105. and

  2106. if

  2107. you

  2108. already

  2109. belong

  2110. to

  2111. Jesus

  2112. then

  2113. this

  2114. serves

  2115. as

  2116. a

  2117. warning

  2118. for

  2119. you

  2120. so

  2121. that

  2122. you're

  2123. not

  2124. surprised

  2125. when

  2126. persecution

  2127. comes

  2128. expect

  2129. opposition

  2130. and

  2131. recognize

  2132. that the

  2133. hatred

  2134. of the

  2135. world

  2136. is

  2137. what

  2138. makes

  2139. it

  2140. all

  2141. the

  2142. more

  2143. important

  2144. that

  2145. we

  2146. abide

  2147. in

  2148. the

  2149. love

  2150. of

  2151. Christ

  2152. and

  2153. love

  2154. one

  2155. another

  2156. so

  2157. then

  2158. it's

  2159. in

  2160. light

  2161. of

  2162. this

  2163. harsh

  2164. reality

  2165. of

  2166. the

  2167. hatred

  2168. of

  2169. the

  2170. world

  2171. that

  2172. Jesus

  2173. returns

  2174. once

  2175. again

  2176. to

  2177. the

  2178. theme

  2179. that

  2180. began

  2181. all

  2182. of

  2183. this

  2184. dialogue

  2185. to

  2186. bearing

  2187. witness

  2188. in

  2189. verses

  2190. 26

  2191. to

  2192. 27

  2193. he

  2194. says

  2195. but

  2196. when

  2197. the

  2198. helper

  2199. comes

  2200. whom

  2201. I

  2202. will

  2203. send

  2204. to

  2205. you

  2206. from

  2207. the

  2208. father

  2209. the

  2210. spirit

  2211. of

  2212. truth

  2213. who

  2214. proceeds

  2215. from

  2216. the

  2217. father

  2218. he

  2219. will

  2220. bear

  2221. witness

  2222. about

  2223. me

  2224. and

  2225. you

  2226. also

  2227. will

  2228. bear

  2229. witness

  2230. because

  2231. you

  2232. have

  2233. been

  2234. with

  2235. me

  2236. from

  2237. to

  2238. suggest

  2239. that

  2240. this

  2241. is

  2242. a

  2243. person

  2244. the

  2245. helper

  2246. is

  2247. not

  2248. just

  2249. some

  2250. impersonal

  2251. force

  2252. that

  2253. Jesus

  2254. sends

  2255. to

  2256. us

  2257. to

  2258. help

  2259. us

  2260. not

  2261. a

  2262. vague

  2263. idea

  2264. an

  2265. abstract

  2266. thing

  2267. but

  2268. he's

  2269. a

  2270. person

  2271. that's

  2272. why

  2273. Jesus

  2274. said

  2275. last

  2276. week

  2277. that

  2278. he

  2279. will

  2280. send

  2281. another

  2282. helper

  2283. another

  2284. helper

  2285. like

  2286. Jesus

  2287. himself

  2288. who

  2289. is

  2290. intimately

  2291. with

  2292. us

  2293. present

  2294. with

  2295. us

  2296. and

  2297. he

  2298. will

  2299. help

  2300. us

  2301. to

  2302. bear

  2303. witness

  2304. along

  2305. beside

  2306. him

  2307. and

  2308. Jesus

  2309. in

  2310. the

  2311. conclusion

  2312. of

  2313. his

  2314. dialogue

  2315. here

  2316. mentions

  2317. the

  2318. hour

  2319. twice

  2320. in

  2321. verse

  2322. 2

  2323. and

  2324. 4

  2325. of

  2326. chapter

  2327. 16

  2328. he

  2329. says

  2330. indeed

  2331. the

  2332. hour

  2333. is

  2334. coming

  2335. when

  2336. whoever

  2337. kills

  2338. you

  2339. will

  2340. think

  2341. he

  2342. is

  2343. offering

  2344. service

  2345. to

  2346. God

  2347. and

  2348. this

  2349. certainly

  2350. came

  2351. true

  2352. in

  2353. the

  2354. persecution

  2355. of

  2356. the

  2357. Jews

  2358. in

  2359. the

  2360. immediate

  2361. aftermath

  2362. and

  2363. verse

  2364. 4

  2365. speaks

  2366. of

  2367. their

  2368. hour

  2369. that

  2370. is

  2371. coming

  2372. the

  2373. hour

  2374. of

  2375. those

  2376. who

  2377. are

  2378. persecuting

  2379. God's

  2380. people

  2381. and

  2382. in

  2383. the

  2384. gospel

  2385. of

  2386. John

  2387. as

  2388. we

  2389. have

  2390. seen

  2391. over

  2392. and

  2393. over

  2394. again

  2395. the

  2396. hour

  2397. is

  2398. code

  2399. word

  2400. for

  2401. Jesus

  2402. death

  2403. resurrection

  2404. and

  2405. ascension

  2406. and

  2407. here

  2408. that

  2409. hour

  2410. corresponds

  2411. to

  2412. their

  2413. hour

  2414. and

  2415. to

  2416. the

  2417. hour

  2418. of

  2419. the

  2420. disciples

  2421. persecution

  2422. and

  2423. even

  2424. death

  2425. the

  2426. threat

  2427. of

  2428. death

  2429. because

  2430. they

  2431. are

  2432. his

  2433. servants

  2434. and

  2435. he

  2436. is

  2437. the

  2438. master

  2439. that

  2440. the

  2441. world

  2442. persecuted

  2443. but

  2444. the

  2445. hour

  2446. of

  2447. our

  2448. suffering

  2449. does

  2450. not

  2451. compare

  2452. to

  2453. the

  2454. hour

  2455. of

  2456. Christ's

  2457. suffering

  2458. because

  2459. the

  2460. sting

  2461. of

  2462. death

  2463. has

  2464. been

  2465. removed

  2466. by

  2467. Jesus

  2468. already

  2469. he

  2470. has

  2471. already

  2472. dealt

  2473. with

  2474. sin

  2475. on

  2476. the

  2477. cross

  2478. for

  2479. us

  2480. so

  2481. that

  2482. when

  2483. we

  2484. suffer

  2485. so

  2486. that

  2487. when

  2488. we

  2489. are

  2490. persecuted

  2491. we

  2492. do

  2493. not

  2494. we

  2495. are

  2496. not

  2497. forsaken

  2498. by

  2499. the

  2500. father

  2501. because

  2502. Christ

  2503. was

  2504. forsaken

  2505. in

  2506. our

  2507. place

  2508. we

  2509. are

  2510. not

  2511. shouldering

  2512. the

  2513. sin

  2514. and

  2515. shame

  2516. of

  2517. the

  2518. world

  2519. or

  2520. even

  2521. our

  2522. own

  2523. because

  2524. Jesus

  2525. bore

  2526. our

  2527. sin

  2528. and

  2529. shame

  2530. and

  2531. because

  2532. of

  2533. that

  2534. it

  2535. strengthens

  2536. us

  2537. to

  2538. abide

  2539. in

  2540. him

  2541. in

  2542. the

  2543. midst

  2544. of

  2545. persecution

  2546. I

  2547. began

  2548. the

  2549. sermon

  2550. by

  2551. talking

  2552. about

  2553. the

  2554. gap

  2555. that

  2556. people

  2557. experience

  2558. right

  2559. between

  2560. our

  2561. belief

  2562. and

  2563. our

  2564. experience

  2565. and

  2566. how

  2567. abiding

  2568. in

  2569. Christ

  2570. is

  2571. a

  2572. key

  2573. to

  2574. bridging

  2575. that

  2576. and

  2577. that

  2578. is

  2579. true

  2580. and

  2581. we

  2582. grow

  2583. in

  2584. that

  2585. but

  2586. it's

  2587. also

  2588. true

  2589. that

  2590. we

  2591. live

  2592. in

  2593. a

  2594. kingdom

  2595. that

  2596. is

  2597. already

  2598. here

  2599. and

  2600. not

  2601. yet

  2602. here

  2603. right

  2604. we

  2605. we

  2606. live

  2607. as

  2608. people

  2609. who

  2610. are

  2611. already

  2612. new

  2613. creation

  2614. yet

  2615. with

  2616. indwelling

  2617. sin

  2618. in our

  2619. flesh

  2620. we

  2621. live

  2622. as

  2623. people

  2624. who

  2625. are

  2626. already

  2627. filled

  2628. with

  2629. the

  2630. Holy

  2631. Spirit

  2632. yet

  2633. sometimes

  2634. we

  2635. don't

  2636. feel

  2637. rivers

  2638. of

  2639. living

  2640. water

  2641. flowing

  2642. out

  2643. and

  2644. while

  2645. we

  2646. live

  2647. in

  2648. this

  2649. gap

  2650. C.S.

  2651. Lewis

  2652. offers

  2653. a helpful

  2654. reminder

  2655. he

  2656. writes

  2657. the

  2658. presence

  2659. of

  2660. God

  2661. is

  2662. not

  2663. the

  2664. same

  2665. as

  2666. the

  2667. sense

  2668. of

  2669. the

  2670. presence

  2671. of

  2672. God

  2673. the

  2674. latter

  2675. may

  2676. be

  2677. due

  2678. to

  2679. imagination

  2680. the

  2681. former

  2682. may

  2683. be

  2684. attended

  2685. with

  2686. no

  2687. sensible

  2688. consolation

  2689. the

  2690. act

  2691. which

  2692. engenders

  2693. a

  2694. child

  2695. ought

  2696. to

  2697. be

  2698. and

  2699. usually

  2700. is

  2701. attended

  2702. by

  2703. pleasure

  2704. but

  2705. it

  2706. is

  2707. not

  2708. the

  2709. pleasure

  2710. that

  2711. produces

  2712. the

  2713. child

  2714. where

  2715. there

  2716. is

  2717. pleasure

  2718. there

  2719. may

  2720. be

  2721. sterility

  2722. where

  2723. there

  2724. is

  2725. no

  2726. pleasure

  2727. the

  2728. act

  2729. may

  2730. be

  2731. fertile

  2732. and

  2733. in

  2734. the

  2735. spiritual

  2736. marriage

  2737. of

  2738. God

  2739. and

  2740. the

  2741. soul

  2742. it

  2743. is

  2744. the

  2745. same

  2746. it

  2747. is

  2748. the

  2749. actual

  2750. presence

  2751. not

  2752. the

  2753. sensation

  2754. of

  2755. the

  2756. presence

  2757. of

  2758. the

  2759. Holy

  2760. Ghost

  2761. which

  2762. begets

  2763. Christ

  2764. in

  2765. us

  2766. and

  2767. the

  2768. sense

  2769. of

  2770. the

  2771. presence

  2772. is

  2773. a

  2774. super

  2775. added

  2776. gift

  2777. for

  2778. which

  2779. we

  2780. give

  2781. thanks

  2782. when

  2783. it

  2784. comes

  2785. so

  2786. when

  2787. we're

  2788. in

  2789. that

  2790. dry

  2791. season

  2792. when

  2793. we're

  2794. feeling

  2795. the

  2796. absence

  2797. of

  2798. joy

  2799. when

  2800. we're

  2801. not

  2802. feeling

  2803. that

  2804. communion

  2805. with

  2806. Christ

  2807. we

  2808. still

  2809. know

  2810. and

  2811. believe

  2812. in

  2813. that

  2814. objective

  2815. union

  2816. with

  2817. Christ

  2818. and

  2819. that's

  2820. what

  2821. helps

  2822. us

  2823. and

  2824. that's

  2825. what

  2826. fosters

  2827. and

  2828. facilitates

  2829. our

  2830. communion

  2831. that's

  2832. what

  2833. helps

  2834. us

  2835. abide

  2836. in

  2837. him

  2838. and

  2839. when

  2840. we

  2841. do

  2842. we

  2843. grow

  2844. in

  2845. that

  2846. communion

  2847. that

  2848. gap

  2849. gets

  2850. narrower

  2851. and

  2852. narrower

  2853. and

  2854. narrower

  2855. and

  2856. we

  2857. experience

  2858. more

  2859. and

  2860. more

  2861. of

  2862. his

  2863. joy

  2864. the

  2865. fullness

  2866. that

  2867. he

  2868. promises

  2869. until

  2870. that

  2871. day

  2872. when

  2873. we

  2874. say

  2875. we

  2876. are

  2877. one

  2878. at

  2879. last

  2880. with

  2881. the

  2882. Lord

  2883. there

  2884. will

  2885. be

  2886. no

  2887. gap

  2888. between

  2889. his

  2890. presence

  2891. and

  2892. our

  2893. sense

  2894. of

  2895. his

  2896. presence

  2897. on

  2898. that

  2899. day

  2900. face

  2901. to

  2902. face

  2903. run

  2904. into

  2905. his

  2906. eternal

  2907. arms

  2908. of

  2909. grace

  2910. that

  2911. with

  2912. that

  2913. final

  2914. union

  2915. in

  2916. view

  2917. let's

  2918. abide

  2919. in

  2920. Christ

  2921. today

  2922. so

  2923. that

  2924. we

  2925. can

  2926. bear

  2927. enduring

  2928. witness

  2929. to

  2930. him

  2931. in

  2932. this

  2933. world

  2934. let's

  2935. pray

  2936. together

  2937. God

  2938. you

  2939. are

  2940. grieved

  2941. when

  2942. we

  2943. think

  2944. hard

  2945. thoughts

  2946. about

  2947. you

  2948. doubting

  2949. your

  2950. care

  2951. your

  2952. grace

  2953. compassion

  2954. toward

  2955. us

  2956. because

  2957. you

  2958. know

  2959. as

  2960. a

  2961. loving

  2962. father

  2963. that

  2964. children

  2965. are

  2966. loath

  2967. to

  2968. come

  2969. to

  2970. angry

  2971. fathers

  2972. and

  2973. so

  2974. you

  2975. have

  2976. given

  2977. us

  2978. Christ

  2979. that

  2980. we

  2981. might

  2982. abide

  2983. in

  2984. him

  2985. and

  2986. be

  2987. assured

  2988. of

  2989. your

  2990. grace

  2991. and

  2992. favor

  2993. so

  2994. we

  2995. can

  2996. obey

  2997. him

  2998. and

  2999. grow

  3000. in

  3001. our

  3002. union

  3003. or

  3004. our

  3005. communion

  3006. with

  3007. him

  3008. so

  3009. we

  3010. pray

  3011. for

  3012. that

  3013. help

  3014. us

  3015. as

  3016. a

  3017. church

  3018. to

  3019. daily

  3020. abide

  3021. in

  3022. you

  3023. in

  3024. Jesus

  3025. name

  3026. we

  3027. pray

  3028. this

  3029. may

  3030. be

  3031. more

  3032. than
