  1. Do you need to read other Bibles?

  2. Psalm 21, 21.

  3. I will read it out loud.

  4. It says,

  5. To the Choir Master, a Psalm of David.

  6. O Lord, in your strength the King rejoices,

  7. and in your salvation how greatly he exalts.

  8. You have given him his heart's desire

  9. and have not withheld the request of his lips, Selah.

  10. For you meet him with rich blessings.

  11. You set a crown of fine gold upon his head.

  12. He asked life of you and you gave it to him.

  13. Length of days forever and ever.

  14. His glory is great through your salvation.

  15. Splendor and majesty you bestow on him.

  16. For you make him most blessed forever.

  17. You make him glad with the joy of your presence.

  18. For the King trusts in the Lord.

  19. And through the steadfast love of the Most High,

  20. he shall not be moved.

  21. Your hand will find out all your enemies.

  22. Your right hand will find out those who hate you.

  23. You will make them as a blazing oven when you appear.

  24. The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath.

  25. And fire will consume them.

  26. You will destroy their descendants from the earth

  27. and their offspring from among the children of man.

  28. Though they plan evil against you,

  29. though they devise mischief,

  30. they will not succeed.

  31. For you will put them to flight.

  32. You will aim at their faces with your books.

  33. Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength.

  34. We will sing and praise your power.

  35. In the screw tape letters,

  36. C.S. Lewis writes about how a senior devil

  37. advises a junior devil on how to tempt a man.

  38. And in one such dialogue,

  39. the senior devil tells him to keep his subject,

  40. his human being, focused on the past,

  41. not on the past, on the future.

  42. Because that's where nearly all vices come from.

  43. So he says,

  44. Nearly all vices are rooted in the future.

  45. Gratitude looks to the past,

  46. and love to the present.

  47. Fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.

  48. We want a man haggrened by the future.

  49. And this passage really,

  50. this psalm speaks the truth of that,

  51. because it teaches us

  52. that by looking on the past at what God has done,

  53. that fosters our present trust in him.

  54. And it's that present trust in him

  55. that enables us to have assurance

  56. of God's deliverance in the future as well.

  57. So, and so the main point of this psalm

  58. is that we can trust in the Lord for salvation presently,

  59. because of his steadfast love and strength.

  60. So in verses 1 to 7,

  61. we see how God in the past saved the faithful.

  62. And then in verses 8 to 13,

  63. we see how God will in future smite the wicked.

  64. So let's read verses 1 to 7 first.

  65. It's in verses 1 to 2, actually.

  66. The whole verses 1 to 6

  67. actually has a poetic parallel structure.

  68. It's kind of a,

  69. it has two sections in verses 1 to 6

  70. that recount how God was faithful

  71. and the reason why he was faithful.

  72. So you can, let me show you that.

  73. In verses 1 to 2, it begins,

  74. Well, Lord, in your strength the king rejoices,

  75. and in your salvation how greatly he exalts.

  76. You have given him his heart's desire

  77. and have not withheld the request of his lips.

  78. Selah.

  79. So God gave him salvation.

  80. And the word could refer,

  81. it's a pretty wide, you know, encompassing word

  82. that can refer also to military victories.

  83. That's probably the context of this psalm,

  84. because he talks about the enemies,

  85. and it's connected to Psalm 20.

  86. And so the king, it seems,

  87. had sought God's help

  88. and asked him to preserve his life,

  89. and God had gave him his heart's desire

  90. and saved him.

  91. So salvation is given.

  92. And the reason for this gift of salvation from God

  93. is verse 3.

  94. For you meet him with rich blessings.

  95. You set a crown of fine gold upon his head.

  96. And because God looked upon him with favor,

  97. God showed his blessing,

  98. that's why the king was spared in battle,

  99. experienced salvation.

  100. And so that pattern of God giving salvation to him,

  101. and then the reason for that,

  102. which is God's blessing,

  103. instead bestowing fine gold,

  104. his glory on him,

  105. that's repeated in verses 4 to 6.

  106. So in verses 4 to 5,

  107. he recounts again God's salvation.

  108. He says,

  109. He asked life of you,

  110. you gave it to him,

  111. length of days forever and ever.

  112. His glory is great through your salvation,

  113. splendor and majesty you bestow on him.

  114. So recognize the word repeated.

  115. Salvation is repeated.

  116. The word to give is repeated.

  117. So again,

  118. it's God who gives salvation.

  119. And then again,

  120. the reason is given for that.

  121. Verse 6,

  122. You,

  123. for,

  124. you make him most blessed forever.

  125. You make him glad with the joy of your presence.

  126. And the word make,

  127. here is the same word that's used

  128. in verses 1,

  129. verse 3,

  130. which says,

  131. set a crown of fine gold upon his head.

  132. It's the same word.

  133. And then again,

  134. the word blessing is repeated,

  135. verse 3 and verse 6.

  136. So this shows,

  137. the parallel pattern shows how God delivers

  138. the king who is faithful to him

  139. and requests his deliverance.

  140. And then finally,

  141. verse 1 and 6 together wrap up

  142. and enclose this section together.

  143. Because in the verse 1,

  144. it said that the king rejoices

  145. in God's salvation and strength.

  146. And now in verse 6,

  147. it says the king is glad

  148. with the joy of God's presence.

  149. Again,

  150. the same words.

  151. So that's the,

  152. and the reason why

  153. the anointed king rejoices in God,

  154. he's able to rejoice in God's salvation.

  155. And all of that is given in Psalm,

  156. in verse 7.

  157. For the king trusts in the Lord

  158. and through the steadfast love

  159. of the Most High,

  160. he shall not be moved.

  161. It's only those who trust in the Lord

  162. that experience God's deliverance

  163. and salvation.

  164. And that's the basis.

  165. And the basis for the trust,

  166. this trust of the psalmist

  167. is God's steadfast love.

  168. So he says,

  169. through the steadfast love

  170. of the Most High,

  171. the king shall not be moved.

  172. And I think those two things

  173. are vitally connected.

  174. Because if God's love

  175. is not constant,

  176. steadfast,

  177. if his love is fickle

  178. and changing,

  179. then we can't trust in him

  180. all the time.

  181. But because his love

  182. is constant,

  183. steadfast,

  184. we can trust in him.

  185. It's not dependent

  186. or contingent

  187. on how we're doing

  188. or how the world is going.

  189. But because God's love

  190. is steadfast,

  191. we can always trust in him.

  192. So that's how God

  193. saved his faithful

  194. in the past.

  195. But God will smite the wicked.

  196. So it's by remembering

  197. and trusting in the Lord

  198. on the basis

  199. of his steadfast love

  200. that we can be assured

  201. of how God will deliver

  202. in the future.

  203. That's what we see

  204. in verses 8 to 12.

  205. Your hand will find out

  206. all your enemies.

  207. Your right hand

  208. will find out

  209. those who hate you.

  210. You will make them

  211. as a blazing oven

  212. when you appear.

  213. The Lord will swallow them up

  214. in his wrath

  215. and fire will consume them.

  216. You will destroy

  217. their descendants

  218. from the earth

  219. and their offspring

  220. from among the children

  221. of men.

  222. Though they plan evil

  223. against you,

  224. though they devise mischief,

  225. they will not succeed.

  226. For you will put them

  227. to flight.

  228. You will aim

  229. at their faces

  230. with your bows.

  231. These kind of verses

  232. are a little bit

  233. discomforting, right?

  234. It's kind of,

  235. you think,

  236. wow, that sounds

  237. pretty violent.

  238. He's going to, you know,

  239. put them to flight

  240. and aim at their faces

  241. with his bows.

  242. This is God's deliverance.

  243. And these kind of passages

  244. remind us that God,

  245. that this ferocity of his,

  246. ferocity of his anger

  247. toward evil, right?

  248. He really is a just God.

  249. He really is a holy God.

  250. And he hates evil

  251. and he hates sin.

  252. And he will meet them

  253. with fiery

  254. and unrelenting judgment.

  255. But notice that this is

  256. in the future tense, right?

  257. This kind of deliverance

  258. doesn't happen now,

  259. but it will happen.

  260. So David has not yet seen

  261. God's judgment of the wicked

  262. in this kind of complete way.

  263. But the fact that God's been

  264. faithful to him in the past

  265. and the fact that he now trusts

  266. in him in the present

  267. is what assures him

  268. that the enemies will

  269. in the end be judged.

  270. And at this point,

  271. you might wonder

  272. what this psalm has to do

  273. with us, right?

  274. What does this have to do

  275. with me?

  276. It was about David.

  277. We're not kings

  278. and we're not in

  279. physical warfare

  280. against any of God's enemies.

  281. and verse 4

  282. kind of insinuates

  283. toward a reality

  284. that goes beyond

  285. the life of David

  286. because it says

  287. that God granted him

  288. life and length of days

  289. forever and ever.

  290. And the language

  291. forever and ever

  292. can't refer to,

  293. you know,

  294. David's immortality

  295. because David died.

  296. And the Bible

  297. nowhere promises,

  298. you know,

  299. immortality in the flesh.

  300. It promises

  301. spiritual eternal life

  302. and resurrection

  303. in the end

  304. but not immortality

  305. in the flesh.

  306. And so the language

  307. actually reflects

  308. the covenant promises

  309. that God made

  310. to King David

  311. in 2 Samuel 7

    2 Samuel 7:12–16

  312. verses 12 to 16.

  313. God promised to David,

  314. when your days

  315. are fulfilled

  316. and you lie down

  317. with your fathers,

  318. I will raise up

  319. your offspring after you

  320. who shall come

  321. from your body

  322. and I will establish

  323. his kingdom.

  324. He shall build a house

  325. for my name

  326. and I will establish

  327. the throne of his kingdom

  328. forever.

  329. And I will be with him

  330. to him a father

  331. and he shall be

  332. to me a son.

  333. When he commits iniquity

  334. I will discipline him

  335. with the rod of men,

  336. with the stripes

  337. of the sons of men.

  338. But my steadfast love

  339. will not depart from him.

  340. As I took it from Saul

  341. whom I put away

  342. from before you.

  343. And your house

  344. and your kingdom

  345. shall be made sure

  346. forever before me.

  347. Your throne shall be

  348. established forever.

  349. Right?

  350. So that's the promise

  351. that's in view

  352. in this song.

  353. Right?

  354. That God's going to

  355. establish David's throne

  356. forever.

  357. So this talk about

  358. life forevermore

  359. is referring to the fact

  360. that God's sustaining

  361. the kingdom

  362. that he built.

  363. That he is going to be

  364. faithful to this

  365. covenant promise

  366. and that's what he's doing

  367. in preserving David.

  368. And so if this

  369. and this promise

  370. to David

  371. of course ultimately

  372. is fulfilled

  373. in Jesus

  374. even though it

  375. immediately refers

  376. to Solomon

  377. his son

  378. it ultimately

  379. refers to Jesus

  380. who is the fulfillment

  381. of this covenant promise

  382. because that's why

  383. he's described

  384. as the son of David

  385. in Luke 1

  386. 32-33

  387. the angels foretelling

  388. the birth of Jesus

  389. says he will be great

  390. and will be called

  391. the son of the most high

  392. and the Lord God

  393. will give to him

  394. the throne of his father

  395. David

  396. and he will reign

  397. over the house

  398. of Jacob forever

  399. and of his kingdom

  400. there will be no end.

  401. So that's

  402. Jesus is the one

  403. that fulfills that

  404. promise.

  405. So then the Psalm 21

  406. that not only does it

  407. speak of David's

  408. military victory

  409. and triumph over

  410. his enemies

  411. but also of our

  412. salvation from

  413. sin and death

  414. because that's

  415. what it ultimately

  416. points to

  417. Jesus

  418. the victory that

  419. Jesus accomplished

  420. for us.

  421. And so then

  422. likewise for us

  423. we need to trust

  424. in the Lord

  425. for our salvation

  426. because of his

  427. steadfast love

  428. and strength.

  429. And that means

  430. our basis

  431. for his

  432. trust in him

  433. has to be

  434. his steadfast love

  435. right

  436. not our performance

  437. and not

  438. how we're doing

  439. not our righteousness

  440. but Christ's righteousness

  441. and that's why

  442. there's an emphasis

  443. in this Psalm

  444. of the strength

  445. of the Lord

  446. the might

  447. strength

  448. in verse 1

  449. and verse 13

  450. it begins

  451. and ends

  452. with an invocation

  453. of

  454. O Lord

  455. in your strength

  456. right

  457. if we look

  458. around us

  459. right

  460. humanity

  461. is always

  462. seeking salvation

  463. for itself

  464. right

  465. and

  466. people

  467. in education

  468. right

  469. will hear this

  470. all the time

  471. that they'll say

  472. education is the goal

  473. that's the solution

  474. that's what's

  475. going to accomplish

  476. salvation

  477. for us

  478. educate enough people

  479. about inequality

  480. you know

  481. racial inequality

  482. gender inequality

  483. income inequality

  484. then we can save

  485. ourselves

  486. and establish

  487. salvation on earth

  488. right

  489. or

  490. they'll say

  491. science is the solution

  492. right

  493. if we can only

  494. progress enough

  495. in our scientific

  496. knowledge

  497. then we can find

  498. solutions to all

  499. our problems

  500. it says

  501. money is the solution

  502. right

  503. if only we can

  504. boost the worldwide

  505. economy

  506. and generate

  507. enough growth

  508. and enough

  509. money

  510. then all the

  511. social ills

  512. will fade

  513. away

  514. but the truth

  515. is there's not

  516. the strength

  517. in us

  518. to save

  519. ourselves

  520. because all

  521. of human

  522. ingenuity

  523. and industry

  524. and goodwill

  525. are not enough

  526. to eradicate

  527. the core evil

  528. in all of us

  529. which is sin

  530. which is at the

  531. basis

  532. the foundation

  533. of all social

  534. ills

  535. and only God

  536. has the strength

  537. to save us

  538. from that

  539. and that's what

  540. he did

  541. by sending

  542. his son

  543. Jesus Christ

  544. to die

  545. for our sins

  546. and rise

  547. and rise

  548. victoriously

  549. from the dead

  550. and because

  551. he has done

  552. that

  553. when we trust

  554. in Jesus

  555. we can be assured

  556. of life forever

  557. more

  558. as this king

  559. was

  560. and we can be

  561. assured of our

  562. future deliverance

  563. and of the

  564. judgment of the

  565. wicked

  566. and of all evil

  567. in the world

  568. and so

  569. that's the display

  570. of God's ultimate

  571. strength

  572. that's in Jesus

  573. and so we need to

  574. trust in the Lord

  575. for salvation

  576. because of his

  577. strength

  578. and the

  579. steadfast love

  580. he displays

  581. in Jesus

  582. so with that

  583. let's

  584. turn to the Lord

  585. in prayer

  586. and come to him

  587. with all our

  588. weaknesses

  589. and failures

  590. and sins

  591. I'm going to sing

  592. Mighty to Save

  593. first

  594. Lord

  595. services

  596. not

  597. to

  598. join

  599. in

  600. God

  601. night

  602. soon

  603. night

  604. night

  605. little

  606. night
