  1. Heavenly Father, this evening we remember the ultimate sacrifice you made in sending your only Son, your beloved Son,

  2. as the sacrificial offering to die for sinners, for our sins, so we might believe in Him and live.

  3. We pray that this truth would not be too familiar to some of us, but that the wonder of it would strike us anew this evening and capture our hearts and our imaginations,

  4. so that we are strengthened in our faith, so that we grow in our love for You. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  5. I will be speaking from John chapter 19 today, so if you don't have a Bible, there's a Blue Pew Bible you can grab there on that table,

    John 19 chapter mention

  6. and in that Bible it's page 905.

  7. John chapter 19, verses 16 to 42.

    John 19:16–42

  8. Let me read.

  9. So they took Jesus, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which in Aramaic is called Gogotha.

  10. There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

  11. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.

  12. It read,

  13. Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.

  14. Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.

  15. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

  16. Do not write the King of the Jews, but rather, this man said, I am King of the Jews.

  17. Pilate answered,

  18. What I have written, I have written.

  19. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took His garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each other, each soldier.

  20. Also his tunic.

  21. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  22. So they said to one another,

  23. Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see whose it shall be.

  24. This was to fulfill the scripture which says,

  25. They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

  26. So the soldiers did these things.

  27. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister,

  28. Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

  29. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby,

  30. He said to His mother,

  31. Woman, behold your son.

  32. Then He said to the disciple,

  33. Behold your mother.

  34. And from that hour the disciple took her to His own home.

  35. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,

  36. said to fulfill the scripture,

  37. I thirst.

  38. A jar full of sour wine stood there.

  39. So they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to His mouth.

  40. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,

  41. It is finished.

  42. And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

  43. Since it was the day of preparation,

  44. and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath,

  45. for that Sabbath was a high day,

  46. the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken,

  47. that they might be taken away.

  48. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with Him.

  49. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead,

  50. they did not break His legs.

  51. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear,

  52. and at once there came out blood and water.

  53. He who saw it has borne witness.

  54. His testimony is true,

  55. and He knows that He is telling the truth,

  56. that you also may believe.

  57. For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  58. Not one of His bones will be broken.

  59. And again, another scripture says,

  60. They will look on Him whom they have pierced.

  61. After these things,

  62. Joseph of Arimathea,

  63. who was a disciple of Jesus,

  64. but secretly for fear of the Jews,

  65. asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus.

  66. And Pilate gave Him permission.

  67. So he came and took away his body.

  68. Nicodemus also,

  69. who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  70. came,

  71. bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

  72. about 75 pounds in weight.

  73. So they took the body of Jesus

  74. and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  75. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  76. Now, in the place where He was crucified,

  77. there was a garden,

  78. and in the garden,

  79. a new tomb,

  80. in which no one had yet been laid.

  81. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  82. since the tomb was close at hand,

  83. He laid Jesus there.

  84. The word of the Lord.

  85. Dr. Michael Brown is one of the foremost apologists,

  86. defender of the Christian faith among Jews.

  87. So he's a Messianic Jew.

  88. And he writes in one of his testimonies

  89. about how he came to faith.

  90. And he was reading,

  91. he was a drug addict,

  92. and he was living a very messed up lifestyle.

  93. And there was a reading of Isaiah 53,

  94. of course,

  95. which many Christians know as a prophecy about Jesus,

  96. which said,

  97. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,

  98. yet we esteemed Him not,

  99. stricken and smitten by God and afflicted.

  100. But He was pierced for our transgressions,

  101. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  102. Upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

  103. and with His wounds we are healed.

  104. When he heard this passage

  105. and saw that this pointed to Jesus,

  106. he was compelled by the power of it

  107. and came to faith.

  108. And in this passage in John,

  109. it mentions several of the prophecies

  110. or mentions of Jesus in Old Testament

  111. that were fulfilled.

  112. And John tells us this

  113. in order that we might believe in Him,

  114. believe that He was the Messiah

  115. that was to be fulfilled.

  116. And the main point that he wants to persuade us of

  117. is that Jesus died on the cross

  118. as the atoning sacrifice

  119. for the sins of His people.

  120. And we're going to examine that claim

  121. in this passage.

  122. And John tells us that first,

  123. that Jesus is the new David,

  124. and secondly,

  125. that He is the new Passover lamb,

  126. and that thirdly,

  127. He brings about,

  128. He creates a new people

  129. by His act on the cross

  130. in dying for His sins.

  131. So read verses 16 to 17 with me.

  132. It says,

  133. So they took Jesus,

  134. and He went out,

  135. bearing His own cross,

  136. the place called the place of a skull,

  137. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  138. So when the Bible gives us a name of a place,

  139. and especially the meaning of the place

  140. in extension,

  141. it probably is significant.

  142. And so Golgotha is an English transliteration

  143. of the Greek,

  144. which is itself a transliteration

  145. of the Aramaic.

  146. And you may have heard the word Calvary,

  147. which is just a Latin form of it,

  148. which comes from the Latin word for skull,

  149. Calvaria.

  150. And some scholars suggest

  151. that the name is derived

  152. from the rock formation of the tomb,

  153. the way it looked like a skull,

  154. or that they think that a lot of people

  155. were buried there.

  156. But that's just speculation,

  157. because there's nothing explaining that to us

  158. in Scripture.

  159. And it seems odd to us,

  160. if that's the case,

  161. why He names the place,

  162. the place called the place of a skull.

  163. And there are a lot of people buried there,

  164. why isn't it called the place of the bones,

  165. or why is it called the place of the skulls?

  166. But it says a singular,

  167. the place of the skull.

  168. And this is the case

  169. in all the Gospel writers' writing.

  170. And it's also,

  171. it's translated in the ESV

  172. as the place of a skull,

  173. which we read,

  174. but in the other translation,

  175. it has the place of the skull,

  176. which is the more accurate way

  177. to translate that syntax.

  178. And if that's the case,

  179. then whose skull is it referring to?

  180. If it's the place of the skull,

  181. a singular,

  182. and that's,

  183. there's a couple options

  184. for explaining that.

  185. And the first,

  186. and I'm going to tell you both,

  187. and the first is that

  188. the church fathers

  189. wrote about origin,

  190. John Chrysostom,

  191. that there was a Jewish tradition

  192. that's held

  193. that Adam's skull

  194. was buried

  195. on the site of Golgotha.

  196. And the tradition says

  197. that Noah preserved

  198. Adam's bones

  199. and divided among his sons

  200. to be preserved,

  201. and one of them took

  202. the skull,

  203. Shem took the skull

  204. and took it to Jerusalem.

  205. And this tradition,

  206. if it's true,

  207. of course,

  208. would convey a powerful truth,

  209. a biblical truth,

  210. which,

  211. because Romans 5, 12, 17 says,

  212. therefore,

  213. as sin came into the world

  214. through one man

  215. and death through sin,

  216. and so death spread

  217. to all men

  218. because all men sinned.

  219. Sin indeed was in the world

  220. before the law was given,

  221. but sin is not counted

  222. where there is no law.

  223. Yet death reigned

  224. from Adam to Moses,

  225. even over those whose sins

  226. were not like

  227. the transgression of Adam,

  228. who was a type of the one

  229. who was to come.

  230. But the free gift

  231. is not like the trespass,

  232. for if many die

  233. through one man's trespass,

  234. much more have the grace of God

  235. and the free gift

  236. in the grace of that

  237. one man,

  238. Jesus Christ,

  239. abounded for many.

  240. So he's talking about

  241. how Adam,

  242. through his sin,

  243. sin came into all of humanity,

  244. and now Jesus,

  245. and he was a type of Jesus,

  246. pointing to Jesus,

  247. and Jesus is the new Adam

  248. through whose perfect sacrifice,

  249. whose perfect life,

  250. now life comes to humanity.

  251. And that's why,

  252. if you've seen some of the

  253. kind of orthodox drawings

  254. of Jesus' crucifixion,

  255. sometimes you see a skull

  256. at the base of it

  257. that's depicting that Adam's skull.

  258. So that's an attractive solution,

  259. but we can't be certain of that

  260. because, once again,

  261. it's not preserved in scripture,

  262. and we don't find documentation

  263. of it in Jewish writings,

  264. only in Christian writings.

  265. But a second solution

  266. that I think is probably

  267. even more likely

  268. is based on etymology

  269. and not based on tradition.

  270. And it's because

  271. the word Golgotha,

  272. even though it's explained

  273. as meaning the skull,

  274. it's actually,

  275. it doesn't mean skull,

  276. the word in Aramaic,

  277. well, it does mean skull,

  278. but it's actually

  279. a very unusual

  280. mangled spelling of the word.

  281. So you're like,

  282. why would you,

  283. if that's what you're trying

  284. to spell, skull,

  285. why would you spell it

  286. that way, you wonder.

  287. And it makes you think,

  288. if you think about

  289. how it sounds,

  290. Golgotha,

  291. think of a connection

  292. to a certain man

  293. named Goliath of Gath.

  294. That's how he's described

  295. in the Bible.

  296. In 1 Samuel 17, 4,

  297. he's named Goliath of Gath.

  298. And Goliath,

  299. as many of you know

  300. this from the story

  301. of David and Goliath,

  302. was a Philistine warrior,

  303. the champion

  304. for the Philistine camp.

  305. And he engaged

  306. in the battle

  307. of the champions

  308. with the Israelites.

  309. And so not fighting

  310. an all-out war,

  311. but having one representative

  312. from each camp fight

  313. for victory.

  314. And Goliath mocked

  315. Israel's army,

  316. Israel's God,

  317. and only one person

  318. had enough faith in God

  319. to oppose him,

  320. and that was David

  321. who would eventually

  322. become king of Israel.

  323. And once you think

  324. about that,

  325. it's really interesting

  326. because the Bible

  327. notes specifically

  328. in 1 Samuel 17, 54,

  329. that David took

  330. the head

  331. of the Philistine

  332. and brought it

  333. to Jerusalem.

  334. And so that's,

  335. if you're thinking

  336. about that,

  337. that could be

  338. an interesting

  339. corroboration

  340. of this hypothesis,

  341. that maybe

  342. it's Goliath of Gath,

  343. his skull

  344. that's buried there,

  345. and hence,

  346. to name it skull,

  347. they said,

  348. Golgotha,

  349. and spelled it

  350. in an unusual way

  351. to convey that.

  352. And of course,

  353. Jesus,

  354. David was also

  355. a type of Jesus.

  356. He pointed to Jesus.

  357. Jesus is the new David,

  358. the ultimate David,

  359. the ultimate king

  360. over God's kingdom.

  361. And he is engaging

  362. then on this hill,

  363. on the cross,

  364. his own battle

  365. against sin

  366. and death

  367. and the devil.

  368. And he's the champion

  369. to represent his people

  370. as David was a champion

  371. to represent Israel.

  372. And he is victorious

  373. again here.

  374. And like that's

  375. the first prophecy

  376. of the gospel

  377. in Genesis 3.15,

  378. which said

  379. that the devil

  380. would bruise

  381. his head,

  382. but that he would bruise,

  383. and the devil

  384. would bruise his heel,

  385. but that he would bruise

  386. the devil's head.

  387. Again,

  388. this here on Calvary,

  389. on Golgotha,

  390. is where the devil's head

  391. is bruised

  392. once and for all.

  393. And so,

  394. if that's what it means,

  395. and that's why

  396. there's a connection

  397. also probably

  398. to the fact

  399. that he's the king,

  400. which is repeatedly

  401. emphasized in this passage.

  402. And Pilate writes

  403. that he's the king

  404. of the Jews,

  405. and this is written

  406. for the whole world

  407. to see.

  408. So in three languages,

  409. in Aramaic for the Jews,

  410. in Latin for the Roman army,

  411. and in Greek

  412. for the rest

  413. of the Gentile world,

  414. the Greek world.

  415. And it's because

  416. David was a type

  417. of Jesus,

  418. a prefigurement

  419. of Jesus,

  420. Apostle John

  421. applies a Psalm

  422. of David

  423. to Jesus

  424. in verses 23

  425. to 24.

  426. And you guys,

  427. we're all familiar

  428. with this,

  429. because if you look at,

  430. watch movies

  431. or read books,

  432. a lot of literature

  433. has Christ types,

  434. right?

  435. Types of Christ.

  436. And then,

  437. and so they're

  438. intentionally alluding to,

  439. alluding back to Jesus

  440. and his example

  441. of sacrifice.

  442. So in the same way,

  443. the Old Testament

  444. points forward

  445. to Christ.

  446. And so that's why

  447. these figures,

  448. all the major institutions

  449. in the Old Testament,

  450. the temple,

  451. the high priest,

  452. the king,

  453. they all point

  454. to Jesus.

  455. They're a type

  456. of Christ.

  457. So verses 23

  458. to 24,

  459. read it with me.

  460. It says,

  461. When the soldiers

  462. had crucified Jesus,

  463. they took his garments

  464. and divided them

  465. into four parts,

  466. one part for each soldier,

  467. also his tunic.

  468. But the tunic

  469. was seamless,

  470. woven in one piece

  471. from top to bottom.

  472. So they said

  473. to one another,

  474. Let us not tear it,

  475. but cast lots for it

  476. to see whose it shall be.

  477. This was to fulfill

  478. the scripture which says,

  479. They divided my garments

  480. among them,

  481. and for my clothing

  482. they cast lots.

  483. This quote is taken

  484. from Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:16–18

  485. verses 16 to 18,

  486. where David is lamenting

  487. his own plight

  488. as an innocent sufferer.

  489. And Christ,

  490. who is the ultimate

  491. innocent sufferer,

  492. therefore fulfills this

  493. in a fuller way

  494. than David even did.

  495. And the verses

  496. in Psalm 22

  497. reads this way,

  498. For dogs encompass me,

  499. a company of evildoers

  500. encircles me.

  501. They have pierced

  502. my hands and feet.

  503. I can count all my bones.

  504. They stare and gloat over me.

  505. They divide my garments

  506. among them,

  507. and for my clothing

  508. they cast lots.

  509. I mean,

  510. the details are astounding,

  511. fulfilled to the minute detail

  512. that he was pierced

  513. in his hands and feet,

  514. that he can count

  515. all of his bones,

  516. that none of his bones

  517. were broken,

  518. that people were gloating

  519. over him and mocking him,

  520. that they divide

  521. his clothing among them,

  522. and even cast lots

  523. for his clothing.

  524. So the parallel

  525. with David continues

  526. in verses 28 to 30.

  527. After this,

  528. Jesus,

  529. knowing that all

  530. was not finished,

  531. said to fulfill

  532. the scripture,

  533. I thirst.

  534. A jar full of sour wine

  535. stood there,

  536. so they put a sponge

  537. full of the sour wine

  538. on a hyssop branch

  539. and held it to his mouth.

  540. When Jesus had received

  541. the sour wine,

  542. he said,

  543. It is finished,

  544. and he bowed his head

  545. and gave up his spirit.

  546. So,

  547. on the cross

  548. in the Middle Eastern heat,

  549. Jesus is parched

  550. from losing so much water

  551. from the beating

  552. and the labor,

  553. carrying the cross,

  554. and then Jesus asks

  555. for a drink

  556. and says,

  557. I thirst.

  558. But even this,

  559. he says,

  560. to fulfill the scripture

  561. because

  562. Psalm 69,

  563. 21 says,

  564. For my thirst,

  565. they gave me sour wine

  566. to drink.

  567. That's again,

  568. a Psalm of David,

  569. which is applied to Jesus.

  570. And to fulfill that scripture,

  571. Jesus says,

  572. I thirst,

  573. and the soldiers

  574. predictably grab

  575. the sour wine

  576. using a sponge

  577. and hand it to Jesus.

  578. So,

  579. Jesus is the new David.

  580. He's the champion

  581. that represents his people

  582. to win victory

  583. over sin and death

  584. and the devil.

  585. But he's also

  586. the new Passover lamb,

  587. sacrificed for the atonement

  588. of God's people.

  589. And we see this

  590. in verses 16 to 17.

  591. So,

  592. they took Jesus

  593. and he went out

  594. bearing his own cross.

  595. The reason why

  596. they have to go out

  597. is that the Old Testament

  598. stipulated that

  599. executions must take place

  600. outside the camp

  601. in order not

  602. to defile the land.

  603. And on the day

  604. of atonement

  605. to Yom Kippur,

  606. which we know of,

  607. which happened once a year,

  608. the high priest

  609. was commanded

  610. to make an atonement

  611. for all of God's people

  612. by sacrificing

  613. a bull and a goat

  614. as an offering for sin

  615. and then sprinkling

  616. their blood on the altar.

  617. And then,

  618. the Old Testament

  619. Leviticus 16, 27

  620. said this,

  621. The bull for the sin offering

  622. and the goat

  623. for the sin offering

  624. whose blood

  625. was brought in

  626. to make atonement

  627. in the holy place

  628. had to be carried forth

  629. outside the camp.

  630. Their skin

  631. and their flesh

  632. and their dung

  633. shall be burned

  634. with fire.

  635. So again,

  636. Jesus fulfills

  637. the institution

  638. of the sacrifice,

  639. Old Testament sacrifice,

  640. the day of atonement

  641. in being carried out,

  642. going out of the city

  643. to die there

  644. for his people.

  645. And that's why

  646. the author of Hebrews

  647. in chapter 13

  648. writes,

  649. makes that connection,

  650. For the bodies

  651. of those animals

  652. whose blood

  653. is brought into

  654. the holy places

  655. by the high priest

  656. as a sacrifice for sin

  657. are burned

  658. outside the camp.

  659. So Jesus also suffered

  660. outside the gate

  661. in order to sanctify

  662. the people

  663. through his own blood.

  664. And there are

  665. several more allusions

  666. specific to the Passover

  667. in verses 31 to 37.

  668. Read it out loud with me.

  669. Follow the 31 to 37.

  670. Since it was the day

  671. of preparation

  672. and so that the bodies

  673. would not remain

  674. on the cross

  675. on the Sabbath

  676. for that Sabbath

  677. was a high day,

  678. the Jews asked Pilate

  679. that their legs

  680. might be broken

  681. and that they might

  682. be taken away.

  683. So the soldiers

  684. came and broke

  685. the legs of the first

  686. and of the other

  687. who had been crucified

  688. with him.

  689. But when they came

  690. to Jesus and saw

  691. that he was already dead,

  692. they did not break

  693. his legs.

  694. But one of the soldiers

  695. pierced his side

  696. with a spear

  697. and at once

  698. there came out

  699. blood and water.

  700. He who saw it

  701. has borne witness,

  702. his testimony is true

  703. and he knows

  704. that he is telling

  705. the truth

  706. that you also

  707. may believe.

  708. For these things

  709. took place

  710. that the scripture

  711. might be fulfilled.

  712. Not one of his bones

  713. will be broken.

  714. And again,

  715. another scripture

  716. says they will

  717. look on him

  718. whom they have

  719. pierced.

  720. The crucifixion

  721. was a long

  722. excruciating process.

  723. I mean,

  724. excruciating,

  725. the word comes

  726. from that,

  727. right?

  728. And the victims

  729. would slump

  730. because of their weight

  731. because of gravity

  732. and that would

  733. constrict the chest,

  734. the cavity

  735. and prevent them

  736. from breathing.

  737. So what they would

  738. have to do

  739. is push themselves

  740. up using their

  741. pierced legs

  742. and hands

  743. in order to

  744. free up the chest

  745. cavity to breathe.

  746. So that was,

  747. the victims

  748. died from

  749. asphyxiation

  750. basically,

  751. from suffocation.

  752. And usually

  753. the Roman practice

  754. was to leave

  755. the crucified victim

  756. on there

  757. for as long

  758. as necessary

  759. to die

  760. and then

  761. to let the

  762. vultures

  763. devour them.

  764. But especially

  765. the criminal

  766. sedition

  767. which Jesus was

  768. because he claimed

  769. to be the king

  770. of the Jews.

  771. However,

  772. on this day

  773. because of Jews'

  774. request,

  775. they're requesting

  776. that because of

  777. Sabbath,

  778. their holiday

  779. especially during

  780. the festival

  781. of the Passover

  782. is coming up,

  783. they don't want

  784. victims lying there

  785. on the cross

  786. just to defile

  787. the land

  788. like they were

  789. afraid of.

  790. And they don't

  791. want to have

  792. to deal with them

  793. and deal with Jesus

  794. especially

  795. on their Sabbath

  796. during the Passover.

  797. So they ask

  798. them to

  799. expedite the process

  800. by breaking

  801. their legs.

  802. And by breaking

  803. the legs,

  804. they don't have

  805. to strengthen

  806. their legs

  807. to push

  808. themselves up

  809. so therefore

  810. they would die

  811. by suffocation

  812. sooner.

  813. So that was

  814. the idea.

  815. But when they

  816. came to Jesus

  817. to break his legs,

  818. they note that

  819. he's already dead

  820. probably from

  821. the enormous

  822. loss of blood

  823. from the double

  824. flogging he

  825. already received.

  826. He died sooner

  827. than a normal

  828. victim.

  829. And so

  830. when Jesus

  831. dies in that

  832. way,

  833. we noted

  834. already Psalm

  835. 22,

  836. 17,

  837. which said

  838. I can count

  839. all my bones.

  840. He fulfills

  841. that scripture

  842. which said

  843. no bone

  844. was to be

  845. broken.

  846. But not only

  847. that,

  848. he fulfills

  849. the type

  850. of the Passover

  851. lamb

  852. because the Passover

  853. lamb,

  854. when they were

  855. eaten,

  856. so the Passover

  857. feast where

  858. Israelites celebrate

  859. because they

  860. were in

  861. captivity in

  862. Egypt,

  863. but God

  864. sent his

  865. angel of death

  866. to judge

  867. those who

  868. oppose him

  869. in Egypt

  870. to kill

  871. the first

  872. borns

  873. of all

  874. families.

  875. But to

  876. those who

  877. obeyed him

  878. and listened

  879. to him

  880. and killed

  881. the Passover

  882. lamb instead

  883. and daubed

  884. its blood

  885. on the

  886. doorposts

  887. were spared.

  888. And so

  889. the Passover

  890. lamb,

  891. however,

  892. when they

  893. eat it,

  894. they were

  895. not to

  896. break any

  897. of its

  898. bones.

  899. So in

  900. that,

  901. Jesus

  902. fulfills

  903. that.

  904. He is

  905. the ultimate

  906. Passover

  907. lamb.

  908. His bone

  909. is not

  910. broken as

  911. he dies.

  912. And it

  913. is his

  914. blood that

  915. becomes the

  916. atonement for

  917. our sins

  918. so that we

  919. can be spared

  920. from God's

  921. righteous

  922. and just

  923. judgment

  924. of sinners.

  925. And those

  926. who die

  927. on a tree

  928. or hang

  929. on a tree,

  930. which happened

  931. to those

  932. who are

  933. executed,

  934. and these

  935. Israelites

  936. typically

  937. executed

  938. victims

  939. and then

  940. hung them

  941. on a

  942. tree

  943. to display.

  944. And because

  945. of that,

  946. the Bible

  947. said that

  948. those who

  949. die in

  950. that manner

  951. is cursed.

  952. And then

  953. Jesus then

  954. takes on

  955. our curse

  956. on the

  957. cross

  958. by dying

  959. on the

  960. tree.

  961. He's

  962. hanged

  963. on a

  964. tree.

  965. And the

  966. author of

  967. Galatians

  968. 3.13

  969. notes this,

  970. Christ redeemed

  971. us from

  972. the curse

  973. of the

  974. law by

  975. becoming

  976. a curse

  977. for us.

  978. For it

  979. is written,

  980. cursed is

  981. everyone

  982. who is

  983. hanged

  984. on a

  985. tree.

  986. So Jesus

  987. is the

  988. new Passover

  989. lamb,

  990. and so

  991. because he's

  992. already dead,

  993. the soldiers

  994. instead of

  995. breaking his

  996. legs,

  997. they just

  998. pierce him

  999. to make

  1000. sure that

  1001. he is

  1002. good and

  1003. dead.

  1004. And when

  1005. they do,

  1006. it says,

  1007. at once

  1008. there came

  1009. out blood

  1010. and water,

  1011. which medical

  1012. experts disagree

  1013. on what exactly

  1014. was pierced,

  1015. but they agree

  1016. that that could

  1017. happen in

  1018. multiple ways.

  1019. They make it

  1020. possible that

  1021. they pierced

  1022. the heart,

  1023. so the blood

  1024. was from the

  1025. heart and the

  1026. water was from

  1027. the sack that

  1028. surrounds the

  1029. heart.

  1030. Either way,

  1031. these are

  1032. soldiers who are

  1033. trained to

  1034. kill,

  1035. and when they

  1036. pierce,

  1037. to make sure

  1038. that they're

  1039. dead,

  1040. this person

  1041. is dead,

  1042. and so

  1043. Jesus,

  1044. he's there

  1045. to show

  1046. that Jesus

  1047. was clearly

  1048. dead.

  1049. And John's

  1050. point about

  1051. water and

  1052. blood coming

  1053. out is not

  1054. really,

  1055. you know,

  1056. medical,

  1057. it's not a

  1058. medical interest,

  1059. it's a theological

  1060. interest for him,

  1061. because he had

  1062. noted that it's

  1063. the blood of

  1064. Jesus that

  1065. poured out,

  1066. that cleanses

  1067. us from sin,

  1068. as he writes

  1069. in another place

  1070. in 1 John 1

  1071. to 7.

  1072. And then again,

  1073. earlier in John

    John 7 chapter mention

  1074. chapter 7,

  1075. he said,

  1076. whoever believes

  1077. in me,

  1078. as the scripture

  1079. has said,

  1080. out of his

  1081. heart will

  1082. flow rivers

  1083. of living

  1084. water.

  1085. Now this he

  1086. said about

  1087. the spirit

  1088. whom those

  1089. who believe

  1090. in him

  1091. were to

  1092. receive,

  1093. for as yet

  1094. the spirit

  1095. had not been

  1096. given,

  1097. because Jesus

  1098. was not yet

  1099. glorified.

  1100. So the image

  1101. of water

  1102. throughout the

  1103. Bible often

  1104. refers to the

  1105. spirit of God,

  1106. and so here

  1107. the water being

  1108. poured out

  1109. with water

  1110. is a symbol,

  1111. is a visual

  1112. representation

  1113. of the Holy

  1114. Spirit really

  1115. coming out

  1116. of his heart,

  1117. of the water

  1118. pouring out

  1119. of his heart,

  1120. so they

  1121. can be

  1122. living water

  1123. to those

  1124. who would

  1125. believe in

  1126. him.

  1127. And then

  1128. finally,

  1129. they will

  1130. look on

  1131. him whom

  1132. they have

  1133. pierced.

  1134. Again,

  1135. that's

  1136. fulfillment

  1137. of Zechariah

  1138. 12,

  1139. 10,

  1140. which said

  1141. that,

  1142. and then

  1143. later in

  1144. that same

  1145. passage,

  1146. it says,

  1147. on that

  1148. day there

  1149. shall be

  1150. a fountain

  1151. open for

  1152. the house

  1153. of David

  1154. and the

  1155. inhabitants

  1156. of Jerusalem

  1157. to cleanse

  1158. them from

  1159. sin and

  1160. uncleanness.

  1161. So again,

  1162. with the

  1163. water and

  1164. blood pouring

  1165. out of

  1166. Jesus'

  1167. heart,

  1168. that's the

  1169. fountain

  1170. opened up

  1171. for his

  1172. people,

  1173. those who

  1174. would believe

  1175. in him

  1176. for the

  1177. cleansing of

  1178. our sin

  1179. by the

  1180. blood and

  1181. the water.

  1182. So Jesus

  1183. fulfills

  1184. scripture as

  1185. the new

  1186. David and

  1187. as the new

  1188. Passover lamb,

  1189. but he does

  1190. this in order

  1191. to create a

  1192. new people.

  1193. John writes

  1194. in verse 35,

  1195. he who saw

  1196. it has

  1197. borne witness,

  1198. his testimony

  1199. is true,

  1200. and he knows

  1201. that he is

  1202. telling the truth

  1203. that you

  1204. also may

  1205. believe.

  1206. This is the

  1207. goal of

  1208. John's

  1209. writing.

  1210. He's not

  1211. just writing

  1212. it just to

  1213. remember for

  1214. the sake of

  1215. memory,

  1216. but he is

  1217. bearing witness

  1218. so that those

  1219. who read

  1220. this,

  1221. those who

  1222. encounter

  1223. Jesus through

  1224. his writing

  1225. might believe

  1226. in him.

  1227. That's his

  1228. goal,

  1229. and in doing

  1230. so become

  1231. born into

  1232. the family

  1233. of God.

  1234. And we see

  1235. a glimpse of

  1236. this new

  1237. family in

  1238. verses 25 to

  1239. 26,

  1240. where Jesus,

  1241. even as he's

  1242. dying on the

  1243. cross,

  1244. takes care of

  1245. his mother,

  1246. he says,

  1247. and he says

  1248. to his

  1249. disciple whom

  1250. he loved

  1251. standing nearby,

  1252. and he said

  1253. to his

  1254. mother,

  1255. woman,

  1256. behold your

  1257. son.

  1258. Then he

  1259. said to the

  1260. disciple,

  1261. behold your

  1262. mother,

  1263. and from

  1264. that hour

  1265. the disciple

  1266. took her

  1267. to his

  1268. own home.

  1269. And this

  1270. is interesting

  1271. because Jesus

  1272. has other

  1273. siblings,

  1274. even though

  1275. they're half

  1276. siblings,

  1277. of course,

  1278. because Jesus

  1279. was born

  1280. of Mary

  1281. when she

  1282. was a

  1283. virgin.

  1284. But she

  1285. has children

  1286. after Jesus,

  1287. right,

  1288. and so he

  1289. has at least

  1290. half brothers,

  1291. siblings,

  1292. but instead

  1293. of entrusting

  1294. his biological

  1295. mother to

  1296. his biological

  1297. brothers,

  1298. he entrusts

  1299. her to

  1300. his spiritual

  1301. family,

  1302. his spiritual

  1303. brother,

  1304. the new

  1305. family of

  1306. God that

  1307. has come

  1308. up through

  1309. his work.

  1310. And he

  1311. says,

  1312. this is your

  1313. mother,

  1314. this is your

  1315. son.

  1316. And not

  1317. only that,

  1318. we see this

  1319. new family

  1320. in verses

  1321. 38 to 42.

  1322. New people

  1323. come and

  1324. join this

  1325. family.

  1326. It says,

  1327. after these

  1328. things,

  1329. Joseph of

  1330. Arimathea

  1331. was a

  1332. disciple of

  1333. Jesus,

  1334. but secretly

  1335. for fear

  1336. of the

  1337. Jews,

  1338. asked Pilate

  1339. that he

  1340. might take

  1341. away the

  1342. body of

  1343. Jesus.

  1344. And Pilate

  1345. gave him

  1346. permission.

  1347. So he

  1348. came and

  1349. took away

  1350. his body.

  1351. Joseph of

  1352. Arimathea

  1353. was a

  1354. member of

  1355. the Sanhedrin,

  1356. and Sanhedrin

  1357. is the

  1358. highest ruling

  1359. body among

  1360. the Jews

  1361. that condemned

  1362. Jesus,

  1363. and took

  1364. him to

  1365. the cross.

  1366. And so

  1367. here we

  1368. see him

  1369. leaving that

  1370. family,

  1371. that structure,

  1372. that Sanhedrin

  1373. is no longer

  1374. the focus

  1375. of the

  1376. focus of

  1377. God's

  1378. people,

  1379. but the

  1380. new family

  1381. of God

  1382. now is

  1383. built around

  1384. Jesus,

  1385. and he

  1386. comes to

  1387. grab Jesus

  1388. so that he

  1389. could give

  1390. him a

  1391. proper burial.

  1392. We see

  1393. this also

  1394. in Nicodemus.

  1395. It says,

  1396. that passage

  1397. continues,

  1398. Nicodemus

  1399. also,

  1400. who earlier

  1401. had come

  1402. to Jesus

  1403. by night,

  1404. came bringing

  1405. a mixture

  1406. of myrrh

  1407. and aloes,

  1408. about 75

  1409. pounds in

  1410. weight.

  1411. So they

  1412. took the

  1413. body of

  1414. Jesus and

  1415. bound it in

  1416. linen cloths

  1417. with the

  1418. spices,

  1419. as is the

  1420. burial custom

  1421. of the

  1422. Jews.

  1423. John uses

  1424. the metaphor,

  1425. the motif of

  1426. light and

  1427. darkness to

  1428. great effect

  1429. throughout his

  1430. gospel.

  1431. So when he

  1432. notes here that

  1433. Nicodemus had

  1434. formally come to

  1435. Jesus at

  1436. night,

  1437. he's noting that

  1438. he was at

  1439. that time in

  1440. a place of

  1441. darkness,

  1442. a place of

  1443. unbelief,

  1444. a place of

  1445. not knowing who

  1446. Jesus was.

  1447. But now here

  1448. he comes to

  1449. bury Jesus

  1450. and to

  1451. anoint him.

  1452. He has come

  1453. out of the

  1454. darkness into

  1455. light,

  1456. the light that

  1457. is Jesus,

  1458. the light of

  1459. the world.

  1460. And in

  1461. sharing this,

  1462. John is

  1463. inviting all

  1464. of us to

  1465. step out of

  1466. darkness into

  1467. light, to

  1468. believe in

  1469. Jesus and to

  1470. be born again

  1471. into that new

  1472. family of

  1473. God.

  1474. As the new

  1475. David and the

  1476. new Passover

  1477. lamb, Jesus

  1478. died on the

  1479. cross as the

  1480. atoning sacrifice

  1481. for the sins

  1482. of his

  1483. people.

  1484. And of

  1485. course that's

  1486. not the end

  1487. of the story.

  1488. There's Easter

  1489. and I hope you

  1490. guys come back

  1491. for Easter to

  1492. hear the rest

  1493. of the story

  1494. because apart

  1495. from the

  1496. resurrection,

  1497. this would be

  1498. meaningless.

  1499. Because the

  1500. resurrection is

  1501. the proof that

  1502. his sacrifice is

  1503. accepted by the

  1504. Father.

  1505. But if you're

  1506. here this

  1507. evening, you're

  1508. not here by

  1509. mistake.

  1510. God summons

  1511. you, he

  1512. calls you to

  1513. believe because

  1514. John wrote this

  1515. that we also

  1516. may believe.

  1517. And as much

  1518. as we'd like to

  1519. tell ourselves

  1520. that we're

  1521. pretty good

  1522. people, that

  1523. we live in a

  1524. pretty good

  1525. world, this

  1526. world is full

  1527. of darkness

  1528. and the evil,

  1529. the darkness

  1530. in our hearts,

  1531. it's kind of

  1532. like, you

  1533. know, puss

  1534. that's just

  1535. barely covered

  1536. over by skin.

  1537. A little bit

  1538. of pressure, a

  1539. little bit of

  1540. scraping, and it

  1541. just spews out

  1542. of us, the evil,

  1543. the darkness in

  1544. our hearts.

  1545. A little bit of

  1546. stress and our

  1547. anger spews out.

  1548. A little bit of

  1549. disagreement and

  1550. our egos and our

  1551. selfishness spew out.

  1552. A little bit of

  1553. scarcity and our

  1554. greed spews out.

  1555. A little bit of

  1556. pleasure and our

  1557. gluttony, lechery,

  1558. and all kinds of

  1559. perversions spew

  1560. out of us.

  1561. A little bit of

  1562. uncertainty and our

  1563. fears and insecurities

  1564. spew out.

  1565. We need a

  1566. redeemer.

  1567. We need a

  1568. savior.

  1569. And that's why

  1570. God the Father

  1571. sends his son,

  1572. Jesus Christ,

  1573. to die on the

  1574. cross as the

  1575. atoning sacrifice

  1576. for our sins.

  1577. And Jesus is

  1578. unique among

  1579. history's religious

  1580. leaders in that

  1581. he does not

  1582. merely teach a

  1583. way of life,

  1584. but offers life,

  1585. eternal life

  1586. itself.

  1587. He accomplishes

  1588. this for us.

  1589. He doesn't leave

1590. it up to us to

  1591. strive and earn

  1592. and attain

  1593. enlightenment or

  1594. salvation for

  1595. ourselves, but he

  1596. himself takes the

  1597. initiative to make

1598. a way for us to

  1599. come and save us.

  1600. He doesn't merely

1601. teach us to live a

  1602. good life.

  1603. He proclaims to

  1604. us the good news

  1605. that he made a

  1606. way for us already,

  1607. that he accomplished

  1608. it.

  1609. That we must only

  1610. believe in it.

  1611. And that's why he

  1612. says decisively at

  1613. verse 30, it is

  1614. finished.

  1615. He gave up his

  1616. spirit.

  1617. And this is

  1618. powerful.

  1619. Because the word

  1620. gave up is the

  1621. same word that's

  1622. translated as

  1623. delivered up or

  1624. handed over.

  1625. And over and over

  1626. again throughout the

  1627. gospel of John,

  1628. over a dozen times,

  1629. it refers to Jesus'

  1630. betrayal.

  1631. They handed him

  1632. over.

  1633. They delivered him

  1634. over to be

  1635. crucified.

  1636. They handed him

  1637. over to Pilate.

  1638. But even though all

  1639. these forces of this

  1640. world are conspiring

  1641. against him, at the

1642. end of the day, it's

  1643. not other people who

  1644. hand Jesus over, but

  1645. it's Jesus who

  1646. himself who hands

  1647. over his spirit.

  1648. He gives up his

  1649. spirit.

1650. He is the master of

  1651. his own faith.

  1652. That's why it says

  1653. also late earlier that

  1654. he bore his own

  1655. cross.

  1656. He wanted to do

  1657. this.

1658. This was of his own

  1659. will.

  1660. He wanted to die

  1661. for our sins.

  1662. And once he has

  1663. done it, he said,

  1664. all is fulfilled.

  1665. It is finished.

  1666. It doesn't mean that,

1667. okay, now my life is

  1668. over.

  1669. I'm about to die.

  1670. That's not what it

  1671. means.

  1672. The word finished

  1673. has a sense of

  1674. accomplishing.

  1675. It's the same word

  1676. that Jesus used

  1677. earlier in 17,

  1678. chapter 70,

  1679. verse 4 to say,

  1680. I glorified you on

  1681. earth having

  1682. accomplished the

  1683. work that you

  1684. gave me to do.

  1685. Jesus is saying,

  1686. it is finished.

  1687. It is accomplished.

  1688. I have done it.

  1689. The work of

  1690. redemption is done

  1691. and there is no

1692. more for us to do

  1693. but to believe in

  1694. him and take hold

  1695. of the work that

  1696. he has completed

  1697. by faith.

  1698. A simple poem

  1699. by S.W.

  1700. Gaty conveys the

  1701. deep irony of it

  1702. all.

  1703. It says,

  1704. he held in hell

  1705. laid low,

  1706. made sin,

  1707. his sin

  1708. overthrew,

  1709. bowed to the

  1710. grave,

  1711. destroyed his

  1712. soul,

  1713. and death

  1714. by dying

  1715. slew.

  1716. Tonight,

  1717. I invite you guys

  1718. to not dwell on

  1719. your own

  1720. accomplishments,

  1721. to not dwell on

  1722. your good works,

  1723. but dwell instead

  1724. on the good news

  1725. of what Jesus

  1726. has done for us

  1727. and let that be

  1728. your salvation

  1729. and when you

  1730. cling to him

  1731. and come to

  1732. Jesus,

  1733. you will hear

  1734. those words

  1735. pronounced over you,

  1736. it is finished,

  1737. it is accomplished

  1738. and the joy of

  1739. salvation will be

  1740. yours.

  1741. Let's pray together.

  1742. God, we thank you.

  1743. There's so,

  1744. there's only so much

  1745. we can say

  1746. to thank you,

  1747. to marvel

  1748. at what you have

  1749. done and to

  1750. praise you for

  1751. all that you have

  1752. done for us,

  1753. for what you

  1754. have done

  1755. in saving us

  1756. on that cross,

  1757. you alone deserve

  1758. all praise

  1759. and honor

  1760. and glory.

  1761. Grant us

  1762. the gift of faith

  1763. so that we may

  1764. cling to you

  1765. and hear those

  1766. words pronounced

  1767. over us.

  1768. It is finished.

  1769. In Jesus' name

  1770. we pray.

  1771. Amen.
