  1. In his famous novel, Gulliver's Travel,

  2. the author and Christian minister, Jonathan Swift,

  3. takes his protagonist, Lemuel Gulliver, to the island of Lugnag.

  4. And there he encounters the Strolbergs, who are immortal.

  5. And about that he writes, he's delighted,

  6. happy nation where every child hath at least a chance for being immortal.

  7. So happy people who, being born exempt from that universal calamity of human nature,

  8. have their minds free and disengaged without the weight and depression of spirits

  9. caused by the continual apprehensions of death.

  10. Then the Gulliver's interpreter acknowledges that it is true

  11. that long life is the universal desire and wish of mankind,

  12. that whoever had one foot in the grave was sure to hold back the other as strongly as he could,

  13. that the oldest had still hopes of living one day longer

  14. and looked on death as the greatest evil,

  15. from which nature always prompted him to retreat.

  16. Unfortunately for the Strolbergs, even though they're immortal,

  17. they still age.

  18. So they basically have eternal senility.

  19. I mean, they're senile for the rest of their lives.

  20. But of course, that's not what we long for.

  21. But it's true, isn't it, that we long for eternal life.

  22. It's found in every culture.

  23. It's seen really in every religion.

  24. But it's not the kind of eternal senility of the Strolbergs,

  25. but eternal life, something vibrant that lasts forever.

  26. So Solomon writes about this in Ecclesiastes 3, verse 11.

    Ecclesiastes 3:11

  27. God has put eternity into man's heart.

  28. But how do we attain it?

  29. Sure, the fact that we long for life after death, for eternal life,

  30. doesn't mean that it exists,

  31. much like the English poet Matthew Arnold who said,

  32. nor does the being hungry prove that we have bread.

  33. That is undoubtedly true.

  34. The fact that we're hungry doesn't prove that we have bread,

  35. but does it not prove that bread, such a thing as bread, exists?

  36. Does it not prove that our hunger is supposed to be met?

  37. So what is this longing we have for meaning and significance after death,

  38. for eternal life?

  39. And if we do not now possess immortality,

  40. but does it not suggest that we need eternal life,

  41. that there's such a thing as eternal life?

  42. And the answer to all these questions lies in Easter,

  43. Resurrection Sunday, as we also call it,

  44. when we celebrate the day when Jesus Christ rose from the day,

  45. third day after his death on the cross.

  46. So then all that your soul most longs for,

  47. the dearest hopes that you have ever held,

  48. can be true because and only because

  49. Jesus rose again from the dead.

  50. As one theologian, Yaroslav Pelikan says,

  51. if the resurrection is not true,

  52. then nothing else matters.

  53. Because it all ends in death.

  54. When the sun burns away,

  55. there will be no one left to remember anything we ever did.

  56. But he also says,

  57. if the resurrection is true,

  58. then nothing else matters.

  59. Because that would be the most important thing,

  60. the thing that matters most.

  61. And John teaches from this passage,

  62. that Jesus died and rose again,

  63. so that by believing that he is the son of God,

  64. we might receive eternal life.

  65. That's his very purpose for writing this book.

  66. And he demonstrates this by recording several witnesses,

  67. who saw and believed.

  68. So first is himself,

  69. and then Mary,

  70. the disciples,

  71. and Thomas.

  72. And he writes all of this,

  73. so that ultimately,

  74. the future generations,

  75. those who do not see,

  76. might believe.

  77. That's the purpose of him,

  78. recording these witnesses,

  79. who saw and believed.

  80. So that's the outline we will follow as we go.

  81. So first,

  82. John,

  83. he sees and believes.

  84. Verse 1 with me says,

  85. on the first day of the week,

  86. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early.

  87. So that's,

  88. first character encounter is Mary,

  89. although this will talk first about John.

  90. And it's remarkable that,

  91. even though Jesus rose again from death,

  92. on the third day,

  93. every single gospel writer notes,

  94. that it was on the first day of the week,

  95. that Jesus rose from the dead.

  96. They do that intentionally,

  97. to point to the fact,

  98. that Jesus makes all things new.

  99. The first day of the week,

  100. that's when Jesus rose from the dead,

  101. and it's in Jesus that we have hope.

  102. And that's why Christians,

  103. even though most of the early Christians were Jews,

  104. who had for centuries been worshiping on the Sabbath,

  105. on a Saturday,

  106. they transformed that practice,

  107. and started worshiping on a Sunday,

  108. right,

  109. to commemorate that.

  110. So that's the significance of that.

  111. And read the rest of the verse 1 with me.

  112. So now,

  113. on the first day of the week,

  114. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,

  115. while it was still dark,

  116. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  117. So Mary Magdalene was one of the faithful devotees of Jesus,

  118. and she had seen previously where he was laid.

  119. So she,

  120. as soon as the Sabbath is over,

  121. as the light is coming back,

  122. she goes to the tomb.

  123. But it says that she goes still,

  124. while it was still dark,

  125. right?

  126. And it notes that,

  127. because John uses the motif of light and darkness,

  128. as we have seen over and over again,

  129. to indicate spiritual state.

  130. She does not yet know,

  131. that Jesus has risen from the,

  132. she does not yet understand,

  133. the meaning of Jesus' death.

  134. And so she's still in darkness.

  135. And so she,

  136. while it was still dark,

  137. she approaches.

  138. And the other gospel writers note that there were other women that came with Mary.

  139. They came to anoint,

  140. to put spices on his body.

  141. And,

  142. but John intentionally mentions only Mary Magdalene,

  143. probably because he wants to highlight the fact that she was the first witness of the resurrection.

  144. The other gospel writers also note that by always naming Mary Magdalene first.

  145. And,

  146. and they're probably coming and wondering how they were going to move that large stone that Pilate had placed there to guard the tomb.

  147. And the Roman guards,

  148. and,

  149. and so they have fears,

  150. and they're coming and approaching the tomb.

  151. But when they come,

  152. she sees that,

  153. Mary Magdalene sees that the tomb,

  154. the stone has already been rolled away.

  155. And that,

  156. that could mean only one thing.

  157. Because,

  158. because John told us in chapter 19,

  159. verse 41,

  160. Jesus was buried in a new tomb,

  161. in which no one had yet been laid.

  162. He told us that intentionally,

  163. to,

  164. to suggest that,

  165. you know what,

  166. if he's something,

  167. if the body's missing from there,

  168. it could mean nothing else.

  169. There was only one body in that tomb.

  170. So if Jesus is missing from there,

  171. that means Jesus is gone,

  172. not someone else.

  173. And so,

  174. it says in verses two to four,

  175. she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple,

  176. the one whom Jesus loved,

  177. that's John,

  178. and said to them,

  179. they have taken the Lord out of the tomb,

  180. and we do not know where they have laid him.

  181. So Peter went out with the other disciple,

  182. and they were going toward the tomb.

  183. Both of them were running together,

  184. but the other disciple outran Peter,

  185. and reached the tomb first.

  186. So John outruns Peter,

  187. and reaches the tomb first,

  188. and their reactions are recorded in the following verses,

  189. five to nine.

  190. And stooping to look in,

  191. he saw the linen cloth lying there,

  192. but he did not go in.

  193. Then Simon Peter came,

  194. following him,

  195. and went into the tomb.

  196. He saw the linen cloth lying there,

  197. and the face cloth,

  198. which had been on Jesus' head,

  199. not lying with the linen cloth,

  200. but folded up in a place by itself.

  201. Then the other disciple,

  202. who had reached the tomb first,

  203. also went in,

  204. and he saw and believed.

  205. For as yet,

  206. they did not understand the scripture,

  207. that he must rise from the dead.

  208. So it's a cave tomb,

  209. and so they stoop in.

  210. John first gets a stoop,

  211. but he doesn't go in.

  212. But Peter,

  213. as we know from his character,

  214. that's portrayed throughout the Gospels,

  215. he's the brash one.

  216. He runs right in,

  217. and to see what's in there,

  218. to see what's in there.

  219. And when they go,

  220. they see the linen cloth still there,

  221. and the face cloth,

  222. it's folded up by its side.

  223. So that's an indication

  224. that this was not a grave robbery.

  225. If they did,

  226. they would not take the time

  227. to remove the linen cloth

  228. from the body

  229. that they're trying to steal.

  230. And in fact,

  231. that would be the main thing

  232. they would want,

  233. because the linen cloth

  234. with the expensive spices

  235. are what you would go for

  236. in a grave robbery during this time.

  237. That's not what happened.

  238. It also doesn't mean

  239. that the Romans moved his body,

  240. because if they did,

  241. they would similarly

  242. not leave the linen spice there.

  243. They would have to do it

  244. somewhere else.

  245. Why would they do that?

  246. And so that's why

  247. John includes that detail.

  248. And the specific detail

  249. that the face cloth

  250. was folded up

  251. in a place by itself,

  252. that's an intentional contrast

  253. with Lazarus,

  254. who was raised by Jesus earlier

  255. in the Gospel of John

  256. and from the dead.

  257. But Lazarus was raised

  258. to mortal life,

  259. to be sick and to die again.

  260. But Jesus was raised

  261. to resurrection life,

  262. immortality, eternal life.

  263. And so there is a difference,

  264. because Lazarus,

  265. when he was raised by Jesus,

  266. he said he came out,

  267. his hands and feet bound

  268. with linen strips

  269. and his face wrapped

  270. with the cloth,

  271. and so that Jesus had to tell

  272. other people to unbind him

  273. and let him go.

  274. But Jesus, in contrast,

  275. rose from the dead.

  276. In fact,

  277. he was in full possession

  278. of himself,

  279. in control of himself,

  280. he takes the time

  281. to fold the facial garment,

  282. the cloth,

  283. set it aside,

  284. and leaves.

  285. It's a sign

  286. that someone

  287. who had no longer

  288. any need of those things

  289. put him aside

  290. and came out of the tomb.

  291. And notice verse 9,

  292. it says,

  293. it explains that up to this point,

  294. they did not understand

  295. the scripture

  296. that he must rise

  297. from the dead.

  298. So contrary to some people

  299. who would argue

  300. that the disciples

  301. fabricated the story

  302. of the resurrection

  303. in order to fit

  304. their preconceived notions

  305. about a Messiah

  306. rising from the dead,

  307. they had no idea

  308. that was what was supposed

  309. to happen.

  310. Rather,

  311. it's the facts,

  312. the reality of what happened

  313. that shaped

  314. and informed

  315. their theology,

  316. their beliefs,

  317. their faith.

  318. And historically,

  319. the rapid growth

  320. of the early church

  321. can't be explained

  322. apart from an empty tomb,

  323. from the resurrection

  324. of Christ.

  325. The most popular

  326. counter-argument

  327. is that the claim

  328. that disciples

  329. stole the body

  330. so that they could,

  331. you know,

  332. tell people,

  333. you know,

  334. that Jesus rose

  335. from the dead.

  336. And Matthew

  337. already anticipates this

  338. and writes about this

  339. in verse 28,

  340. 11, 15.

  341. He says,

  342. the Jewish authorities

  343. paid the soldiers

  344. who were guarding there

  345. when Jesus rose

  346. from the dead

  347. to lie to the people

  348. saying,

  349. his disciples came by night

  350. and stole him away

  351. while we were asleep.

  352. But that theory

  353. is so far-fetched

  354. that Matthew

  355. doesn't even deign

  356. to defend against it

  357. because if they were sleeping

  358. and, in fact,

  359. so soundly asleep

  360. that they weren't able

  361. to do anything

  362. when his disciples

  363. came to steal his body,

  364. how would they know

  365. that it was his disciples,

  366. right?

  367. I mean,

  368. they can't.

  369. Moreover,

  370. this explanation itself

  371. is an unwitting admission

  372. of the significant fact

  373. of the empty tomb,

  374. that it was indeed empty,

  375. that they needed

  376. to come up with something

  377. to explain it

  378. and make sense of it.

  379. Nor does that explanation

  380. make sense of the fact

  381. that every single one

  382. of Jesus' apostles,

  383. save one,

  384. John,

  385. and save Judas,

  386. the betrayer,

  387. were martyred,

  388. proclaiming that Jesus

  389. rose from the dead.

  390. What was in it for them?

  391. Why would they

  392. perpetuate a lie

  393. that they don't even

  394. themselves believe?

  395. Some other people

  396. have suggested

  397. that Jesus didn't actually die,

  398. but only appeared to die.

  399. And after three days

  400. in the tomb,

  401. he was resuscitated.

  402. He came back to life.

  403. Not only is that

  404. medically highly implausible,

  405. but that also defies

  406. common sense.

  407. Think about a Christ

  408. who came out of the tomb

  409. enfeebled,

  410. scarred,

  411. literally half dead,

  412. and then imagine

  413. that same man

  414. convincing all his followers

  415. that he is the glorious

  416. son of God

  417. who rose from the dead.

  418. It just doesn't fly.

  419. No one would believe him.

  420. The disciples

  421. were confronted

  422. with the fact

  423. of the empty tomb

  424. of the resurrected Christ,

  425. which then shaped

  426. and advanced

  427. their understanding

  428. of how Scripture

  429. foretold the resurrection.

  430. They didn't invent it.

  431. What do you make

  432. of the empty tomb?

  433. The reality of resurrection

  434. confronts us today

  435. still in the worldwide

  436. celebration of Easter.

  437. I urge you today

  438. to not leave this place

  439. without having come

  440. to a decisive answer

  441. on that question.

  442. What do you make

  443. of the empty tomb?

  444. So John saw

  445. and believed.

  446. Now we turn to Mary

  447. in verses 11 to 18.

  448. Read 11 to 13 with me.

  449. But Mary stood

  450. weeping outside the tomb

  451. and as she wept

  452. she stooped

  453. to look into the tomb

  454. and she saw two angels

  455. in white

  456. sitting where

  457. the body of Jesus

  458. had lain.

  459. One at the head

  460. and one at the feet.

  461. They said to her,

  462. woman,

  463. why are you weeping?

  464. She said to them,

  465. they have taken away

  466. my Lord

  467. and I do not know

  468. where they have laid him.

  469. So all the gospel writers

  470. note that there were angels

  471. in Jesus' tomb.

  472. Mark and Luke

  473. call them men

  474. but that's

  475. very consistent

  476. with how Old Testament

  477. usually describes angels.

  478. They describe angels

  479. as coming in form of men

  480. and so it's consistent

  481. with that

  482. and the description

  483. that they were

  484. in gleaming white garments

  485. is always consistent

  486. with the description

  487. of angels in the Bible.

  488. So these are angels

  489. that they're talking about.

  490. And then perhaps

  491. seeing another person

  492. maybe in her peripheral vision

  493. just behind her,

  494. Mary turns around

  495. and sees Jesus

  496. but she doesn't yet

  497. recognize him

  498. according to verse 14.

  499. Now this may be

  500. due to the fact

  501. that it was still dark

  502. like I said before

  503. or it may be

  504. the fact that

  505. she was crying

  506. as the passage tells us

  507. and her eyes

  508. were still blurry

  509. or it may just be

  510. that she just didn't

  511. expect to see him.

  512. I mean all of us

  513. are familiar

  514. with that experience

  515. when you see someone

  516. out of context

  517. you don't expect

  518. to see that person

  519. so you don't recognize

  520. that person.

  521. Maybe it says

  522. you're vacationing

  523. in a foreign country

  524. and then you see

  525. your neighbor there

  526. and you're like

  527. oh you just run

  528. right past them

  529. you don't recognize

  530. that person.

  531. Or your friend

  532. whom you're only familiar

  533. with an informal context

  534. and you see them

  535. all of a sudden

  536. at work

  537. and formally dressed

  538. and you don't

  539. recognize that person.

  540. It could happen

  541. to all of us.

  542. So here Mary

  543. doesn't yet recognize

  544. Jesus.

  545. So Jesus says to her

  546. verses 15 to 16

  547. Woman why are you weeping?

  548. Whom are you seeking?

  549. And supposing him

  550. to be the gardener

  551. she said to him

  552. Sir if you have

  553. carried him away

  554. tell me where you

  555. have laid him

  556. and I will take him away.

  557. Jesus said to her

  558. Mary

  559. and she turned

  560. and said to him

  561. on an Aramaic

  562. Rabboni

  563. which means teacher.

  564. So as soon as

  565. Jesus utters her name

  566. Mary probably

  567. in the same way

  568. he has always said it

  569. she immediately

  570. recognizes him

  571. and the despair

  572. and sadness

  573. that had weighed her down

  574. is transformed

  575. into amazement

  576. and joy

  577. and she addresses

  578. Jesus as she always has

  579. teacher.

  580. and Jesus has said

  581. in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  582. 27

  583. my sheep

  584. hear my voice

  585. and I know them

  586. and they follow me

  587. so here

  588. Mary is one of the sheep

  589. that belong to him

  590. Jesus is the shepherd

  591. so when she hears

  592. his voice

  593. she responds

  594. and follows him

  595. she believes

  596. I believe he's calling

  597. some of you

  598. this morning

  599. and I pray

  600. that you'll recognize

  601. his voice

  602. and follow him

  603. also

  604. but this

  605. sweet reunion

  606. is short lived

  607. because Jesus

  608. says to her

  609. in verse 17

  610. do not cling

  611. to me

  612. for I have not yet

  613. ascended to the father

  614. but go to my brothers

  615. and say to them

  616. I am ascending

  617. to my father

  618. and your father

  619. to my God

  620. and your God

  621. Jesus telling Mary

  622. that there's no need

  623. for her

  624. to hold on to him

  625. to cling to him

  626. because he's not about

  627. to just permanently disappear

  628. he's not yet

  629. ascended to the father

  630. instead

  631. he wants her

  632. to go and tell others

  633. because that now

  634. is a time

  635. to spread the news

  636. because he's still here

  637. and still he's going

  638. to appear

  639. to his disciples

  640. so he gives her

  641. a mission

  642. but go to my brothers

  643. and say to them

  644. this is not referring

  645. to his biological brothers

  646. but to the apostles

  647. which you see

  648. from what Mary does

  649. I'm ascending

  650. to my father

  651. and your father

  652. to my God

  653. and your God

  654. and so verse 18

  655. continues

  656. Mary Magdalene

  657. went and announced

  658. to the disciples

  659. I have seen

  660. the Lord

  661. and that he had said

  662. these things to her

  663. and by doing so

  664. Mary becomes

  665. the very first witness

  666. of the resurrected Jesus

  667. and the gospel writers

  668. record this

  669. because it's true

  670. in spite of the fact

  671. that according to

  672. the Jewish law

  673. of the time

  674. women were not allowed

  675. to bear testimony

  676. in court

  677. their witnesses

  678. were considered

  679. invalid

  680. yet

  681. notwithstanding that

  682. they make

  683. Mary Magdalene

  684. the very first witness

  685. because she was

  686. and it's not so

  687. fitting with what God

  688. does throughout history

  689. he's always taking

  690. the marginalized

  691. the weak

  692. and he uses them

  693. for his purposes

  694. and so Mary

  695. like John

  696. sees

  697. and believes

  698. and begins

  699. to spread

  700. the word

  701. so she goes

  702. to witness

  703. to the disciples

  704. and then Jesus

  705. himself appears

  706. among them

  707. read verses 19

  708. and 20

  709. with me

  710. on the evening

  711. of that day

  712. the first day

  713. of the week

  714. the doors being

  715. locked

  716. where the disciples

  717. were for fear

  718. of the Jews

  719. Jesus came

  720. and stood among them

  721. and said to them

  722. peace

  723. be with you

  724. when he had said

  725. this he showed

  726. them his hands

  727. and his side

  728. and the disciples

  729. were glad

  730. when they saw

  731. the Lord

  732. here and later

  733. in verse 26

  734. John specifically

  735. notes that the doors

  736. were locked

  737. when Jesus came

  738. and stood among them

  739. and that's to highlight

  740. the miraculous nature

  741. of Jesus' appearance

  742. his resurrected body

  743. he somehow

  744. walked through

  745. a locked door

  746. or he materialized

  747. somehow in the room

  748. and so that's

  749. that's not a mortal body

  750. this is a resurrected body

  751. it's what Paul

  752. talks about

  753. in 1 Corinthians 15

  754. in a moment

  755. in the twinkling

  756. of an eye

  757. at the last trumpet

  758. the trumpet will sound

  759. and the dead

  760. will be raised

  761. imperishable

  762. and we shall be changed

  763. for this perishable body

  764. must put on

  765. the imperishable

  766. and this mortal body

  767. must put on immortality

  768. so it's a foretaste

  769. of what we will all experience

  770. as Jesus followers

  771. will experience

  772. when Jesus returns

  773. so that's the resurrected body

  774. and as he stands

  775. among them

  776. Jesus says to them

  777. peace

  778. be with you

  779. when he has said this

  780. he showed them

  781. his hands and side

  782. and the disciples

  783. were glad

  784. when they saw

  785. the Lord

  786. so they again

  787. see

  788. there's a theme here

  789. recurring theme

  790. of seeing

  791. and believing

  792. and Jesus

  793. pronounces

  794. God's peace

  795. over them

  796. he does it again

  797. in verse 21

  798. so at one level

  799. peace is simply

  800. the greeting

  801. it's a typical

  802. Jewish greeting

  803. shalom

  804. but it's invested

  805. with much deeper meaning

  806. here after Jesus' death

  807. and resurrection

  808. because shalom

  809. means wholeness

  810. not just a peace

  811. not having conflict

  812. but a wholeness

  813. a sense of fitting

  814. very snugly

  815. to God's purpose

  816. and order

  817. and plan

  818. that's that wholeness

  819. that comes from

  820. being fit into God's plan

  821. so that's what the peace

  822. word peace conveys

  823. and it's not without forethought

  824. that Apostle Paul

  825. in all 13 of his

  826. New Testament letters

  827. uses grace

  828. and peace

  829. as the greeting

  830. for the believers

  831. have you ever had a sense

  832. that something is amiss

  833. in this world

  834. that something's

  835. about you

  836. about the world around you

  837. is off kilter

  838. is your conscience

  839. uneasy

  840. do you feel a spiritual

  841. emptiness

  842. the answer to all of that

  843. lies in Jesus

  844. when you accept him

  845. as your savior

  846. and lord

  847. and entrust your life

  848. to him

  849. his status before God

  850. the father

  851. becomes yours

  852. his righteousness

  853. becomes yours

  854. and as a result of that

  855. you have peace

  856. with God

  857. it's the peace

  858. that surpasses

  859. understanding

  860. it's unshakable

  861. the wholeness

  862. of sense of fitting

  863. snugly into God's

  864. order and purposes

  865. and apart from that

  866. peace with God

  867. we cannot have peace

  868. with one another

  869. Jesus continues to speak

  870. to his disciples

  871. in verses 21 to 22

  872. peace be with you

  873. as the father

  874. has sent me

  875. even so

  876. I am sending you

  877. and when he has said this

  878. he breathed on them

  879. and said to them

  880. receive the Holy Spirit

  881. the word send

  882. is one of the most

  883. frequently used words

  884. in the entire gospel

  885. and it captures the idea

  886. that Jesus is the sent one

  887. of the father

  888. that John 3 17

  889. said that God

  890. did not send his son

  891. into the world

  892. to condemn the world

  893. but in order that the world

  894. might be saved

  895. through him

  896. and we are sent

  897. on this same mission

  898. by Jesus

  899. not to condemn the world

  900. but to save the world

  901. through him

  902. and so Jesus had prayed

  903. this prayer

  904. for his disciples

  905. in chapter 17

  906. verse 18

  907. as you sent me

  908. into the world

  909. so I have sent them

  910. into the world

  911. so Christians

  912. those who follow Jesus

  913. are graciously involved

  914. and invited

  915. into this divine chain

  916. his mission

  917. the father sends

  918. the son

  919. the son sends

  920. the Holy Spirit

  921. and in that power

  922. of the Holy Spirit

  923. the church

  924. the body of believers

  925. is sent out

  926. to proclaim

  927. that message

  928. of salvation

  929. so then Christians

  930. are by definition

  931. missionaries

  932. the word missionary

  933. comes from the Latin word

  934. that means the exact same thing

  935. as the Greek word here

  936. that means sent

  937. that's who we are

  938. there's no alternative

  939. to be a Christian

  940. is to be a missionary

  941. and because of this mission

  942. urgency

  943. not complacency

  944. should characterize

  945. a Christian life

  946. we're not saved

  947. so that we can

  948. selfishly coast

  949. for the rest of our lives

  950. contented with our own salvation

  951. but we are saved

  952. and sent

  953. so that we can

  954. selflessly

  955. announce

  956. and reflect

  957. the good news

  958. of Jesus Christ

  959. to others

  960. and what's the goal

  961. of all this

  962. the salvation

  963. of all those

  964. whom God has given

  965. to his son

  966. in this world

  967. of course

  968. we should do all

  969. that we can

  970. to love our neighbors

  971. and serve them

  972. just Jesus commands that

  973. but if it ends there

  974. if we don't proclaim

  975. the message

  976. of salvation

  977. then our mission

  978. is incomplete

  979. and we have been

  980. faithless to Jesus

  981. our word and works

  982. must lead those

  983. in the world

  984. to salvation

  985. not merely greater

  986. harmony

  987. or equality

  988. the salvation

  989. eternal life

  990. that's the goal

  991. then knowing

  992. that this mission

  993. is too much

  994. for us to handle

  995. in our own strength

  996. Jesus breathes

  997. on them

  998. and says to them

  999. receive the Holy Spirit

  1000. this reference

  1001. to the Holy Spirit

  1002. much like the water

  1003. that poured out

  1004. from Jesus' side

  1005. during his crucifixion

  1006. is a symbolic preview

  1007. of the outpouring

  1008. of the Holy Spirit

  1009. at Pentecost

  1010. Jesus repeatedly

  1011. connects the descent

  1012. of the Holy Spirit

  1013. to the ascent

1014. of the Son of God

  1015. when Jesus ascends

1016. that's when the Holy Spirit

  1017. descends

  1018. to his believers

  1019. and Jesus

  1020. breathing on his disciples

  1021. is reminiscent

  1022. of God's creation

  1023. in Genesis 2-7

  1024. when God creates man

1025. and breathes into his nostrils

  1026. the breath of life

  1027. thus life

  1028. thus making him

  1029. a living creature

  1030. it's also

  1031. it recalls

  1032. prophet Ezekiel's experience

  1033. in the valley

  1034. of dry bones

  1035. Ezekiel 37 verse 9

    Ezekiel 37:9

1036. where God says to him

  1037. prophesy to the breath

  1038. prophesy son of man

1039. and say to the breath

1040. thus says the Lord God

1041. come from the four winds

  1042. O breath

1043. and breathe on these slain

  1044. that they may live

1045. and the breath of God

  1046. there in that instance

  1047. revitalizes the valley

  1048. of dry bones

  1049. and turns them

  1050. into a living army

1051. so this breath of God

  1052. that has generated power

  1053. it creates life

  1054. in those two instances

1055. and what Jesus does here

  1056. by breathing

  1057. has regenerated power

  1058. he recreates life

  1059. imparts spiritual life

  1060. eternal life

1061. it's not the full impartation

  1062. of the Spirit

  1063. yet we know that

  1064. from Acts 2

  1065. and Jesus instructs

  1066. his disciples

  1067. in Acts 1

  1068. wait for the promise

  1069. of the Father

  1070. because then they will

  1071. receive power

  1072. when the Holy Spirit

  1073. comes upon them

  1074. so this is instead

  1075. a foretaste

  1076. it's a preview

  1077. and a promise

  1078. that the fullness

  1079. of the Spirit

  1080. that is to come

1081. and John includes it here

  1082. to make sure

  1083. we understand

  1084. that connection

  1085. between the Son's ascent

  1086. and the Spirit's descent

  1087. I hope you understand

  1088. the staggering implications

  1089. of this

  1090. right

  1091. because

  1092. the Holy Spirit

  1093. is the third person

  1094. in the Triune God

  1095. right

  1096. this means that

1097. we are not only sent

  1098. by God

  1099. we're sent

  1100. with God

  1101. right

  1102. the Spirit of God

  1103. enlivens us

  1104. and empowers us

  1105. for mission

  1106. and because of that

  1107. our mission

  1108. is destined

  1109. for success

  1110. because the Spirit

  1111. of God

  1112. goes with us

  1113. that should alleviate

  1114. any fear

  1115. we might have

  1116. that prevents us

  1117. from telling people

  1118. about Jesus

  1119. this also obviates

  1120. any use of force

  1121. or manipulation

  1122. on our part

  1123. the salvation

  1124. of the world

  1125. doesn't depend

  1126. on us

  1127. not on our eloquence

  1128. not on our persuasiveness

  1129. it depends

  1130. on God's power

  1131. so since the church

  1132. which is the family

  1133. of believers

1134. goes with the Holy Spirit

  1135. on Christ's mission

  1136. it's no wonder

  1137. then that

  1138. Jesus says

  1139. in verse 23

  1140. if you forgive

  1141. the sins of any

  1142. they are forgiven them

  1143. if you withhold

  1144. forgiveness from any

  1145. it is withheld

  1146. notice the words

  1147. forgiven

  1148. and withheld

  1149. are in passive form

  1150. and if you were

  1151. to translate

  1152. that a little more

  1153. literally and woodenly

1154. it would read like this

  1155. if you forgive

  1156. the sins of any

  1157. they have been

  1158. forgiven them

  1159. if you withhold

  1160. forgiveness from any

  1161. it has been withheld

  1162. those words

  1163. are very carefully

  1164. put in that

  1165. perfect passive form

  1166. to indicate

  1167. that it's not

  1168. we the Christians

  1169. who hold the power

  1170. of forgiveness

  1171. but it's God

  1172. he's the one

  1173. that forgives

  1174. he's the offended

  1175. party in every sin

  1176. so it's only

  1177. the person

  1178. who was offended

  1179. that can forgive

  1180. the offense

  1181. so only God

  1182. can forgive sin

  1183. so he's the one

  1184. that forgives

  1185. but nevertheless

  1186. we can't deprive

  1187. the conditional statement

  1188. of its true force

  1189. because it does say

  1190. if you

  1191. that's us

  1192. because the disciples

  1193. are the representatives

  1194. of the church

  1195. the foundation

  1196. of the church

  1197. if we forgive

  1198. the sins of any

  1199. they are forgiven them

  1200. if we withhold

  1201. forgiveness from any

  1202. it is withheld

  1203. that means

  1204. as God's representatives

  1205. and as those

  1206. who have been indwelled

1207. by the spirit of God

  1208. when we proclaim

  1209. the good news

  1210. of Jesus Christ

  1211. some will believe

  1212. and accept

  1213. unto salvation

  1214. others will reject it

  1215. unto damnation

  1216. and because of that

  1217. are the power

  1218. that we hold

  1219. in proclaiming the gospel

  1220. we become

  1221. the

  1222. kind of the

  1223. sifting

  1224. force

  1225. that separates

  1226. those two people

  1227. so that if we

  1228. forgive the sins

  1229. of any

  1230. we announce

  1231. forgiveness

  1232. of those

  1233. who believe

  1234. in Jesus

  1235. then it is

  1236. forgiven them

  1237. God has forgiven

  1238. them

  1239. and when we say

  1240. that that person

  1241. has not been forgiven

  1242. because their refusal

  1243. to believe

  1244. it is withheld

  1245. it has been

  1246. withheld

  1247. by the father

  1248. what an unspeakable

  1249. privilege

  1250. a heavy

  1251. responsibility

  1252. so let us

  1253. go and proclaim

  1254. the good news

  1255. of Jesus Christ

  1256. liberally

  1257. widely

  1258. incessantly

  1259. so we can

  1260. pronounce the

  1261. forgiveness of God

  1262. over as many

  1263. people would

  1264. repent and

  1265. believe

  1266. so far

  1267. we have seen

  1268. how John

  1269. saw and

  1270. believed

  1271. how Mary

  1272. saw and

  1273. believed

  1274. how the

  1275. disciples

  1276. saw and

  1277. believed

  1278. but it turns

  1279. out that there

  1280. was one

  1281. disciple

  1282. who was

  1283. missing

  1284. from that

  1285. group

  1286. and so

  1287. now we're

  1288. going to

  1289. turn to

  1290. Thomas

  1291. verses 24

  1292. to 29

  1293. how he

  1294. comes to

  1295. see and

  1296. believe

  1297. but Thomas

  1298. will not

  1299. easily be

  1300. convinced

  1301. we find out

  1302. here that

  1303. he's a

  1304. skeptic

  1305. read verses

  1306. 24 to 25

  1307. with me

  1308. now Thomas

  1309. one of the

  1310. twelve

  1311. called the

  1312. twin

  1313. was not

  1314. with them

  1315. when Jesus

  1316. came

  1317. so the other

  1318. disciples

  1319. told him

  1320. we have

  1321. seen

  1322. the Lord

  1323. but he

  1324. said to

  1325. them

  1326. unless

  1327. I see

  1328. in his

  1329. hands

  1330. the mark

  1331. of the

  1332. nails

  1333. and place

  1334. my finger

  1335. into the

  1336. mark of

  1337. the nails

  1338. and place

  1339. my hand

  1340. into his

  1341. side

  1342. I will

  1343. never

  1344. believe

  1345. so if you

  1346. are of a

  1347. skeptical bent

  1348. you have a

  1349. kinder spirit

  1350. here in

  1351. Thomas

  1352. he's a

  1353. highly logical

  1354. thinker who

  1355. relies on his

  1356. senses and his

  1357. own rational

  1358. assessment of

  1359. situations

  1360. so

  1361. we saw

  1362. this early

  1363. in John

  1364. 14

  1365. Jesus

  1366. told his

  1367. disciples

  1368. I'm going

  1369. to the

  1370. father

  1371. and you

  1372. know

  1373. where I'm

  1374. going

  1375. and it

  1376. was Thomas

  1377. who interjected

  1378. and said

  1379. Lord we do

  1380. not know where

  1381. you are going

  1382. how can we

  1383. know the way

  1384. so you

  1385. could see his

  1386. character from

  1387. that

  1388. so that's

  1389. the kind

  1390. of man

  1391. that Thomas

  1392. is

  1393. it doesn't

  1394. matter to

  1395. him that

  1396. the rest

  1397. of the

  1398. disciples

  1399. are saying

  1400. we've

  1401. seen

  1402. the

  1403. Lord

  1404. he's

  1405. like

  1406. no

  1407. unless I

  1408. see him

  1409. I'm

  1410. not

  1411. believing

  1412. this

  1413. this is

  1414. helpful for

  1415. us

  1416. because as

  1417. modern people

  1418. living in

  1419. the midst

  1420. of great

  1421. scientific

  1422. advances

  1423. and progress

  1424. and reason

  1425. we sometimes

  1426. think that

  1427. Christianity

  1428. it's no

  1429. longer

  1430. possible

  1431. for us

  1432. to believe

  1433. because it

  1434. was for

  1435. credulous

  1436. people

  1437. gullible

  1438. people

  1439. back then

  1440. who didn't

  1441. have these

  1442. resources

  1443. that were

  1444. so superstitious

  1445. and ready to

  1446. believe in

  1447. miracles and

  1448. the resurrection

  1449. of Christ

  1450. but the story

  1451. of Thomas

  1452. reminds us

  1453. that in

  1454. every generation

  1455. there is a

  1456. share of

  1457. skeptics

  1458. they have

  1459. their own

  1460. share of

  1461. skeptics

  1462. that's what

  1463. that kind of

  1464. thinking betrays

  1465. what C.S. Lewis

  1466. calls

  1467. chronological

  1468. snobbery

  1469. people in the

  1470. first century

  1471. didn't believe

  1472. in miracles

  1473. either

  1474. people in the

  1475. first century

  1476. didn't believe

  1477. that people

  1478. rose from

  1479. the dead

  1480. either

  1481. that's why

  1482. this is so

  1483. remarkable

  1484. that's why

  1485. this turns

  1486. them into

  1487. believers

  1488. I've shared

  1489. this with

  1490. some of you

  1491. before

  1492. but I

  1493. want to

  1494. invite you

  1495. to put

  1496. on a

  1497. skeptic's

  1498. hat

  1499. with me

  1500. for a

  1501. moment

  1502. think for

  1503. a moment

  1504. about the

  1505. central claim

  1506. of Christianity

  1507. that Jesus

  1508. died for our

  1509. sins on the

  1510. cross and

  1511. rose from the

  1512. dead as

  1513. proof of

  1514. that victory

  1515. over sin

  1516. and death

  1517. now that is

  1518. a patently

  1519. falsifiable

  1520. claim

  1521. right

  1522. right

  1523. author

  1524. Michael

  1525. Patton

  1526. C.

  1527. Michael

  1528. Patton

  1529. writes in

  1530. his book

  1531. now that

  1532. I'm a

  1533. Christian

  1534. that

  1535. Christianity

  1536. is the

  1537. world's

  1538. most

  1539. falsifiable

  1540. religion

  1541. right

  1542. to

  1543. illustrate

  1544. consider

  1545. Islam

  1546. in order

  1547. to become

  1548. a Muslim

  1549. one must

  1550. trust in

  1551. a private

  1552. encounter

  1553. that

  1554. Muhammad

  1555. had with

  1556. God

  1557. which is

  1558. historically

  1559. unverifiable

  1560. consider

  1561. Buddhism

  1562. and

  1563. Hinduism

  1564. whose

  1565. central

  1566. tenets

  1567. are a

  1568. philosophy

  1569. rather than

  1570. a historical

  1571. event

  1572. rooted in

  1573. time and

  1574. space

  1575. so there's

  1576. no objective

  1577. way to

  1578. test those

  1579. either

  1580. consider

  1581. every

  1582. religion

  1583. you can

  1584. think of

  1585. besides

  1586. Christianity

  1587. it either

  1588. begins with

  1589. one

  1590. a private

  1591. dream

  1592. about

  1593. God

  1594. or two

  1595. a private

  1596. angelic

  1597. encounter

  1598. about

  1599. God

  1600. or three

  1601. a private

  1602. idea

  1603. and philosophy

  1604. about

  1605. God

  1606. and then

  1607. this one

  1608. person

  1609. tells

  1610. everybody

  1611. else

  1612. about

  1613. this

  1614. private

  1615. experience

  1616. and then

  1617. consider

  1618. Christianity

  1619. begins with

  1620. one

  1621. a public

  1622. ministry

  1623. Christ

  1624. was killed

  1625. publicly

  1626. it's recorded

  1627. by Jewish

  1628. historians

  1629. and Roman

  1630. historians

  1631. two

  1632. Christ

  1633. rose

  1634. from a

  1635. public

  1636. tomb

  1637. publicly

  1638. and

  1639. three

  1640. Christ

  1641. publicly

  1642. showed

  1643. himself

  1644. to the

  1645. public

  1646. and

  1647. five

  1648. or four

  1649. the public

  1650. told everyone

  1651. what they

  1652. saw

  1653. it's a

  1654. radically

  1655. different

  1656. beginning

  1657. if you

  1658. want to

  1659. start a

  1660. call

  1661. that's

  1662. the last

  1663. thing

  1664. you want

  1665. to do

  1666. to say

  1667. that you

  1668. know what

  1669. I'm going

  1670. to die

  1671. and rise

  1672. again on

  1673. the third

  1674. day

  1675. because

  1676. that's

  1677. not gonna

  1678. work

  1679. you're gonna

  1680. die

  1681. and not

  1682. come back

  1683. from the

  1684. dead

  1685. and your

  1686. religion

  1687. is dead

  1688. right before

  1689. it starts

  1690. but

  1691. that's

  1692. exactly

  1693. what

  1694. Jesus

  1695. did

  1696. the

  1697. church

  1698. grew

  1699. now

  1700. the

  1701. largest

  1702. religion

  1703. in the

  1704. world

  1705. why

  1706. because

  1707. Jesus

  1708. did

  1709. rise

  1710. from

  1711. the

  1712. dead

  1713. and

  1714. this

  1715. is the

  1716. most

  1717. important

  1718. and

  1719. compelling

  1720. proof

  1721. among

  1722. all

  1723. Jesus

  1724. signs

  1725. so

  1726. read

  1727. verses

  1728. so

  1729. that's

  1730. why

  1731. it

  1732. says

  1733. verses

  1734. 26

  1735. to

  1736. 28

  1737. eight

  1738. days

  1739. later

  1740. so

  1741. that

  1742. would

  1743. again

  1744. be

  1745. the

  1746. first

  1747. day

  1748. of

  1749. the

  1750. new

  1751. week

  1752. his

  1753. disciples

  1754. were

  1755. inside

  1756. again

  1757. and

  1758. Thomas

  1759. was

  1760. with

  1761. them

  1762. although

  1763. the

  1764. doors

  1765. were

  1766. locked

  1767. Jesus

  1768. came

  1769. and stood

  1770. among

  1771. them

  1772. and said

  1773. peace

  1774. be

  1775. with

  1776. you

  1777. when

  1778. he

  1779. said

  1780. to

  1781. Thomas

  1782. put

  1783. your

  1784. finger

  1785. here

  1786. and

  1787. see

  1788. my

  1789. hands

  1790. and put

  1791. out

  1792. your

  1793. hand

  1794. and place

  1795. it

  1796. in

  1797. my

  1798. side

  1799. do

  1800. not

  1801. disbelieve

  1802. but

  1803. believe

  1804. Thomas

  1805. answered

  1806. him

  1807. my

  1808. Lord

  1809. and

  1810. my

  1811. God

  1812. it's

  1813. no

  1814. easy

  1815. thing

  1816. for

  1817. a

  1818. faithful

  1819. Jew

  1820. to

  1821. call

  1822. a

  1823. man

  1824. my

  1825. Lord

  1826. and

  1827. my

  1828. God

  1829. for

  1830. thousands

  1831. of

  1832. years

  1833. Jews

  1834. have

  1835. believed

  1836. that

  1837. there

  1838. is

  1839. no

  1840. God

  1841. but

  1842. Yahweh

  1843. but

  1844. the

  1845. reality

  1846. of

  1847. the

  1848. resurrected

  1849. Lord

  1850. Jesus

  1851. overrides

  1852. his

  1853. skeptical

  1854. instincts

  1855. and

  1856. theological

  1857. qualms

  1858. and

  1859. he's

  1860. compelled

  1861. to

  1862. conclude

  1863. by

  1864. that

  1865. experience

  1866. that

  1867. Jesus

  1868. really

  1869. is

  1870. the

  1871. son

  1872. of

  1873. God

  1874. the

  1875. second

  1876. person

  1877. of

  1878. the

  1879. Trinity

  1880. and

  1881. so

  1882. rightly

  1883. Thomas

  1884. says

  1885. my

  1886. Lord

  1887. and

  1888. my

  1889. God

  1890. and

  1891. what

  1892. a

  1893. God

  1894. to

  1895. profess

  1896. for

  1897. us

  1898. the

  1899. God

  1900. of

  1901. all

  1902. creation

  1903. became

  1904. a

  1905. man

  1906. a

  1907. creature

  1908. so

  1909. that

  1910. he

  1911. can

  1912. live

  1913. the

  1914. fallen

  1915. life

  1916. we

  1917. have

  1918. lived

  1919. and

  1920. to

  1921. die

  1922. as

  1923. the

  1924. perfect

  1925. atoning

  1926. sacrifice

  1927. for

  1928. our

  1929. sins

  1930. and

  1931. this

  1932. drastic

  1933. gesture

  1934. of

  1935. love

  1936. that

  1937. Jesus

  1938. has

  1939. shown

  1940. is

  1941. forever

  1942. stamped

  1943. on

  1944. him

  1945. because

  1946. he

  1947. is

  1948. incarnate

  1949. forever

  1950. he's

  1951. forever

  1952. going

  1953. to

  1954. be

  1955. man

  1956. fully

  1957. God

  1958. and

  1959. fully

  1960. man

  1961. and

  1962. his

  1963. resurrected

  1964. body

  1965. is

  1966. forever

  1967. going

  1968. to

  1969. have

  1970. the

  1971. marks

  1972. the

  1973. scars

  1974. of

  2002. it

  2006. Jesus

  2007. by

  2027. that

  2028. side

  2029. of

  2030. thine

  2031. we

  2032. know

  2033. today

  2034. what

  2035. wounds

  2036. are

  2037. have

  2038. no

  2039. fear

  2040. show

  2041. us

  2042. thy

  2043. scars

  2044. we

  2048. the

  2051. were

  2052. strong

  2054. thou

  2055. was

  2056. weak

  2057. they

  2058. rode

  2059. but

  2060. thou

  2061. didst

  2062. stumble

  2063. to

  2064. a

  2065. throne

  2066. but

  2067. to

  2068. our

  2069. wounds

  2070. only

  2071. God's

  2072. wounds

  2073. can

  2074. speak

  2075. and

  2076. not a

  2077. God

  2078. has

  2079. wounds

  2080. but

  2081. thou

  2082. alone

  2083. our

  2084. Lord

  2085. Jesus

  2086. alone

  2087. has

  2088. wounds

  2089. therefore

  2090. only

  2091. he

  2092. of

  2093. all

  2094. the

  2095. gods

  2096. can

  2097. speak

  2098. to

  2099. our

  2100. wounds

  2101. our

  2102. suffering

  2103. our

  2104. sins

  2105. our

  2106. life

  2107. our

  2108. Lord

  2109. Jesus

  2110. alone

  2111. became

  2112. a

  2113. man

  2114. so

  2115. he

  2116. alone

  2117. can

  2118. speak

  2119. to

  2120. our

  2121. humanity

  2122. we

  2123. do

  2124. not

  2125. have

  2126. a

  2127. high

  2128. priest

  2129. who

  2130. is

  2131. unable

  2132. to

  2133. empathize

  2134. with

  2135. our

  2136. weaknesses

  2137. but

  2138. one

  2139. who

  2140. in

  2141. every

  2142. respect

  2143. has

  2144. been

  2145. tempted

  2146. as

  2147. we

  2148. are

  2149. yet

  2150. without

  2151. sin

  2152. so

  2153. he

  2154. can

  2155. empathize

  2156. with

  2157. us

  2158. and

  2159. therefore

  2160. Jesus

  2161. is

  2162. uniquely

  2163. worthy

  2164. of

  2165. our

  2166. allegiance

  2167. and

  2168. love

  2169. who

  2170. do

  2171. you

  2172. say

  2173. this

  2174. Christ

  2175. is

  2176. this

  2177. is

  2178. the

  2179. most

  2180. important

  2181. question

  2182. that you

  2183. will ever

  2184. have to

  2185. answer in

  2186. your life

  2187. it's not

  2188. enough that

  2189. Christ is

  2190. someone else's

  2191. God

  2192. or Lord

  2193. is he

  2194. your

  2195. Lord

  2196. is he

  2197. your

  2198. God

  2199. because

  2200. Thomas's

  2201. profession

  2202. is personal

  2203. he's my

  2204. Lord

  2205. and my

  2206. God

  2207. it's

  2208. easy

  2209. to be

  2210. tyrannized

  2211. by

  2212. the

  2213. urgent

  2214. things

  2215. that

  2216. distract

  2217. us

  2218. and

  2219. demand

  2220. our

  2221. immediate

  2222. attention

  2223. and

  2224. neglect

  2225. the

  2226. things

  2227. that

  2228. are

  2229. of

  2230. eternal

  2231. importance

  2232. things

  2233. that

  2234. are

  2235. most

  2236. significant

  2237. do

  2238. not

  2239. disbelieve

  2240. but

  2241. believe

  2242. make a

  2243. decision

  2244. today

  2245. this

  2246. leads us

  2247. to my

  2248. final point

  2249. this morning

  2250. John

  2251. bears

  2252. witness

  2253. to what

  2254. he

  2255. himself

  2256. along

  2257. with

  2258. Mary

  2259. the

  2260. disciples

  2261. and

  2262. Thomas

  2263. saw

  2264. and

  2265. believed

  2266. so

  2267. that

  2268. we

  2269. who

  2270. cannot

  2271. see

  2272. might

  2273. still

  2274. believe

  2275. so

  2276. Jesus

  2277. says

  2278. to

  2279. Thomas

  2280. in

  2281. verse

  2282. 29

  2283. have

  2284. you

  2285. believed

  2286. because

  2287. you

  2288. have

  2289. seen

  2290. me

  2291. blessed

  2292. are

  2293. those

  2294. who

  2295. have

  2296. not

  2297. seen

  2298. and

  2299. yet

  2300. have

  2301. believed

  2302. Jesus

  2303. foresees

  2304. a time

  2305. when

  2306. he will

  2307. be

  2308. permanently

  2309. ascended

  2310. to the

  2311. father's

  2312. right

  2313. hand

  2314. and

  2315. we

  2316. will

  2317. no

  2318. longer

  2319. be

  2320. able

  2321. to

  2322. see

  2323. as

  2324. these

  2325. disciples

  2326. did

  2327. and

  2328. so

  2329. thinking

  2330. of

  2331. that

  2332. he

  2333. says

  2334. blessed

  2335. are

  2336. those

  2337. who

  2338. have

  2339. not

  2340. seen

  2341. yet

  2342. have

  2343. believed

  2344. and

  2345. we

  2346. belong

  2347. to

  2348. this

  2349. generation

  2350. so

  2351. for

  2352. us

  2353. faith

  2354. comes

  2355. from

  2356. not

  2357. seeing

  2358. but

  2359. hearing

  2360. and

  2361. hearing

  2362. through

  2363. the

  2364. word

  2365. of

  2366. Christ

  2367. but

  2368. this

  2369. doesn't

  2370. mean

  2371. that

  2372. our

  2373. faith

  2374. cannot

  2375. be

  2376. as

  2377. strong

  2378. as

  2379. that

  2380. of

  2381. the

  2382. first

  2383. disciple

  2384. it

  2385. doesn't

  2386. mean

  2387. that

  2388. our

  2389. experience

  2390. of

  2391. the

  2392. joy

  2393. of

  2394. having

  2395. relationship

  2396. with

  2397. God

  2398. is

  2399. any

  2400. less

  2401. or

  2402. inferior

  2403. to

  2404. that

  2405. that

  2406. is

  2407. first

  2408. Peter

  2409. 1

  2410. 8

  2411. to

  2412. 9

  2413. says

  2414. though

  2415. you

  2416. have

  2417. not

  2418. seen

  2419. him

  2420. you

  2421. love

  2422. him

  2423. that's

  2424. the

  2425. experience

  2426. that

  2427. we

  2428. all

  2429. know

  2430. all

  2431. the

  2432. Christians

  2433. know

  2434. though

  2435. you

  2436. do

  2437. not

  2438. now

  2439. see

  2440. him

  2441. you

  2442. believe

  2443. in

  2444. him

  2445. and

  2446. rejoice

  2447. with

  2448. joy

  2449. that

  2450. is

  2451. inexpressible

  2452. and

  2453. filled

  2454. with

  2455. glory

  2456. obtaining

  2457. the

  2458. outcome

  2459. of

  2460. your

  2461. faith

  2462. the

  2463. salvation

  2464. of

  2465. your

  2466. souls

  2467. if

  2468. you're

  2469. a

  2470. believer

  2471. you know

  2472. what

  2473. that

  2474. means

  2475. you've

  2476. experienced

  2477. those

  2478. who

  2479. have

  2480. not

  2481. seen

  2482. and

  2483. yet

  2484. have

  2485. believed

  2486. over

  2487. and

  2488. against

  2489. those

  2490. who

  2491. have

  2492. seen

  2493. and

  2494. believed

  2495. it's

  2496. because

  2497. God

  2498. is

  2499. pleased

  2500. with

  2501. and

  2502. honored

  2503. by

  2504. our

  2505. faith

  2506. our

  2507. faith

  2508. in

  2509. God's

  2510. word

  2511. what

  2512. he

  2513. has

  2514. told

  2515. us

  2516. shows

  2517. that

  2518. we

  2519. think

  2520. that

  2521. God

  2522. is

  2523. reliable

  2524. it

  2525. expresses

  2526. our

  2527. confidence

  2528. in

  2529. him

  2530. as

  2531. any

  2532. counselor

  2533. would

  2534. say

  2535. or

  2536. any

  2537. relationship

  2538. expert

  2539. would

  2540. say

  2541. trust

  2542. is

  2543. the

  2544. bedrock

  2545. of

  2546. any

  2547. healthy

  2548. relationship

  2549. it's

  2550. the

  2551. same

  2552. in

  2553. our

  2554. relationship

  2555. with

  2556. God

  2557. when

  2558. we

  2559. lack

  2560. confidence

  2561. in

  2562. others

  2563. so

  2564. that

  2565. we

  2566. do

  2567. not

  2568. believe

  2569. what

  2570. they

  2571. tell

  2572. us

  2573. unless

  2574. we

  2575. say

  2576. we

  2577. see

  2578. it

  2579. for

  2580. ourselves

  2581. we

  2582. betray

  2583. our

  2584. lack

  2585. of

  2586. esteem

  2587. in

  2588. regard

  2589. for

  2590. them

  2591. don't

  2592. we

  2593. and

  2594. that's

  2595. why

  2596. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:1

  2597. 11

  2598. verse

  2599. 1

  2600. and

  2601. verse

  2602. 6

  2603. says

  2604. now

  2605. faith

  2606. is

  2607. the

  2608. assurance

  2609. of

  2610. things

  2611. hoped

  2612. for

  2613. the

  2614. conviction

  2615. of

  2616. things

  2617. not

  2618. seen

  2619. and

  2620. without

  2621. faith

  2622. it is

  2623. impossible

  2624. to

  2625. please

  2626. God

  2627. for

  2628. whoever

  2629. would

  2630. draw

  2631. near

  2632. to

  2633. God

  2634. must

  2635. believe

  2636. that

  2637. he

  2638. exists

  2639. and

  2640. that

  2641. he

  2642. rewards

  2643. those

  2644. who

  2645. seek

  2646. him

  2647. what

  2648. that

  2649. means

  2650. is

  2651. faith

  2652. is

  2653. the

  2654. modus

  2655. operandi

  2656. of the

  2657. Christian

  2658. when we

  2659. act

  2660. in

  2661. faith

  2662. we

  2663. glorify

  2664. God

  2665. by

  2666. expressing

  2667. our

  2668. trust

  2669. in

  2670. him

  2671. and

  2672. when

  2673. we

  2674. act

  2675. faithlessly

  2676. we

  2677. are

  2678. distrusting

  2679. God

  2680. and relying

  2681. on

  2682. ourselves

  2683. all

  2684. Christian

  2685. obedience

  2686. therefore

  2687. is born

  2688. of

  2689. faith

  2690. we

  2691. will

  2692. not

  2693. conduct

  2694. ourselves

  2695. with

  2696. integrity

  2697. in

  2698. every

  2699. aspect

  2700. of

  2701. our

  2702. lives

  2703. unless

  2704. we

  2705. believe

  2706. that

  2707. God

  2708. is

  2709. always

  2710. watching

  2711. he

  2712. sees

  2713. everything

  2714. we

  2715. will

  2716. not

  2717. forsake

  2718. our

  2719. pride

  2720. and

  2721. legalism

  2722. and

  2723. self

  2724. righteousness

  2725. unless

  2726. we

  2727. believe

  2728. that

  2729. God

  2730. has

  2731. saved

  2732. us

  2733. by

  2734. his

  2735. grace

  2736. we

  2737. will

  2738. not

  2739. consider

  2740. others

  2741. better

  2742. than

  2743. ourselves

  2744. and

  2745. look

  2746. to

  2747. others

  2748. interests

  2749. not

  2750. just

  2751. our

  2752. own

  2753. unless

  2754. we

  2755. believe

  2756. that

  2757. this

  2758. is

  2759. what

  2760. Christ

  2761. did

  2762. for

  2763. us

  2764. and

  2765. that

  2766. God

  2767. sees

  2768. us

  2769. and

  2770. will

  2771. reward

  2772. us

  2773. when

  2774. we

  2775. do

  2776. not

  2777. believe

  2778. that

  2779. God's

  2780. plan

  2781. for

  2782. us

  2783. is

  2784. better

  2785. than

  2786. our

  2787. own

  2788. plans

  2789. we

  2790. are

  2791. doubting

  2792. God's

  2793. love

  2794. for

  2795. us

  2796. and

  2797. failing

  2798. to

  2799. love

  2800. him

  2801. this

  2802. is

  2803. why

  2804. it

  2805. pleases

  2806. God

  2807. when

  2808. we

  2809. believe

  2810. even

  2811. when

  2812. we

  2813. have

  2814. not

  2815. seen

  2816. it

  2817. requires

  2818. more

  2819. faith

  2820. so

  2821. Jesus

  2822. says

  2823. blessed

  2824. blessed

  2825. are

  2826. those

  2827. who

  2828. have

  2829. not

  2830. seen

  2831. yet

  2832. believe

  2833. and

  2834. when

  2835. you

  2836. believe

  2837. you

  2838. see

  2839. John

  2840. wrote

  2841. about

  2842. it

  2843. this

  2844. in

  2845. chapter

  2846. 11

  2847. verse

  2848. 40

  2849. he

  2850. told

  2851. Martha

  2852. if

  2853. you

  2854. believe

  2855. you

  2856. will

  2857. see

  2858. the

  2859. glory

  2860. of

  2861. God

  2862. so

  2863. Augustine

  2864. a 4th

  2865. century

  2866. Christian

  2867. theologian

  2868. wrote

  2869. about

  2870. this

  2871. reality

  2872. faith

  2873. is

  2874. to

  2875. believe

  2876. what

  2877. you

  2878. do

  2879. not

  2880. see

  2881. the

  2882. reward

  2883. of

  2884. this

  2885. faith

  2886. is

  2887. to

  2888. see

  2889. what

  2890. you

  2891. believe

  2892. so

  2893. John

  2894. writes

  2895. in

  2896. verses

  2897. 30

  2898. to

  2899. 31

  2900. now

  2901. Jesus

  2902. did

  2903. many

  2904. other

  2905. signs

  2906. in

  2907. the

  2908. presence

  2909. of

  2910. the

  2911. disciples

  2912. which

  2913. are

  2914. not

  2915. written

  2916. in

  2917. this

  2918. book

  2919. but

  2920. these

  2921. are

  2922. written

  2923. so

  2924. that

  2925. you

  2926. may

  2927. believe

  2928. that

  2929. Jesus

  2930. is

  2931. the

  2932. Christ

  2933. the

  2934. Son

  2935. of

  2936. God

  2937. and

  2938. that

  2939. by

  2940. believing

  2941. you

  2942. may

  2943. have

  2944. life

  2945. in

  2946. his

  2947. name

  2948. the

  2949. signs

  2950. include

  2951. everything

  2952. that he

  2953. did

  2954. to

  2955. authenticate

  2956. his

  2957. true

  2958. identity

  2959. as

  2960. the

  2961. Son

  2962. of

  2963. God

  2964. so

  2965. it

  2966. includes

  2967. his

  2968. miracles

  2969. but

  2970. chiefly

  2971. among

  2972. them

  2973. all

  2974. is

  2975. his

  2976. death

  2977. and

  2978. resurrection

  2979. and

  2980. ascension

  2981. it's

  2982. in

  2983. believing

  2984. that

  2985. in

  2986. believing

  2987. in

  2988. Jesus

  2989. Christ

  2990. the

  2991. Son

  2992. of

  2993. God

  2994. that

  2995. we

  2996. have

  2997. life

  2998. in

  2999. his

  3000. name

  3001. eternal

  3002. life

  3003. if

  3004. you

  3005. are

  3006. already

  3007. a

  3008. Christian

  3009. I

  3010. want

  3011. to

  3012. ask

  3013. you

  3014. this

  3015. morning

  3016. are

  3017. you

  3018. taking

  3019. subsequent

  3020. steps

  3021. of

  3022. faith

  3023. in

  3024. your

  3025. life

  3026. because

  3027. all

  3028. Christian

  3029. obedience

  3030. is born

  3031. of

  3032. faith

  3033. and

  3034. we

  3035. cannot

  3036. please

  3037. God

  3038. apart

  3039. from

  3040. faith

  3041. are

  3042. you

  3043. choosing

  3044. the

  3045. way

  3046. of

  3047. faith

  3048. in

  3049. God

  3050. rather

  3051. than

  3052. relying

  3053. on

  3054. your

  3055. own

  3056. works

  3057. are

  3058. you

  3059. trusting

  3060. in

  3061. God

  3062. or

  3063. are

  3064. you

  3065. trusting

  3066. in

  3067. yourself

  3068. that's

  3069. why

  3070. often

  3071. the

  3072. best

  3073. path

  3074. for

  3075. the

  3076. Christian

  3077. is

  3078. not

  3079. always

  3080. the

  3081. easy

  3082. path

  3083. it's

  3084. not

  3085. always

  3086. the

  3087. path

  3088. that

  3089. we

  3090. clearly

  3091. see

  3092. but

  3093. it's

  3094. a

  3095. path

  3096. that

  3097. requires

  3098. the

  3099. most

  3100. faith

  3101. because

  3102. it

  3103. pleases

  3104. him

  3105. if

  3106. you

  3107. are

  3108. not

  3109. yet

  3110. a

  3111. Christian

  3112. are

  3113. you

  3114. ready

  3115. to

  3116. take

  3117. that

  3118. first

  3119. initial

  3120. step

  3121. of

  3122. faith

  3123. maybe

  3124. at this

  3125. point

  3126. you're

  3127. wondering

  3128. how much

  3129. faith

  3130. do I

  3131. need

  3132. exactly

  3133. I hope

  3134. this is

  3135. a helpful

  3136. illustration

  3137. for you

  3138. January

  3139. 1st

  3140. 1914

  3141. that's

  3142. when the

  3143. very first

  3144. commercial

  3145. plane

  3146. took its

  3147. passengers

  3148. and transported

  3149. them from

  3150. St.

  3151. Petersburg

  3152. Russia

  3153. to

  3154. Tampa

  3155. Florida

  3156. imagine

  3157. two

  3158. individuals

  3159. who

  3160. have

  3161. the

  3162. amazing

  3163. privilege

  3164. of being

  3165. first

  3166. passengers

  3167. on the

  3168. plane

  3169. one

  3170. of them

  3171. is

  3172. very

  3173. confident

  3174. in the

  3175. way this

  3176. machine

  3177. was built

  3178. he's

  3179. relaxed

  3180. and calm

  3181. he's

  3182. downright

  3183. giddy

  3184. at times

  3185. so he

  3186. sits

  3187. and he's

  3188. confident

  3189. he enjoys

  3190. a book

  3191. whatever

  3192. he brought

  3193. and

  3194. he lands

  3195. safely

  3196. in the

  3197. destination

  3198. imagine

  3199. another

  3200. person

  3201. he

  3202. is

  3203. fearful

  3204. in fact

  3205. he

  3206. considers

  3207. this

  3208. a great

  3209. privilege

  3210. and honor

  3211. so he

  3212. wants to

  3213. do it

  3214. and so

  3215. he does

  3216. get in

  3217. the

  3218. plane

  3219. but the

  3220. whole

  3221. time

  3222. he's

  3223. shaking

  3224. in his

  3225. boots

  3226. afraid

  3227. in fact

  3228. he squeals

  3229. out loud

  3230. when it

  3231. starts to

  3232. take off

  3233. right

  3234. let me

  3235. ask you

  3236. does that

  3237. person

  3238. still get

  3239. to the

  3240. destination

  3241. of course

  3242. because

  3243. them

  3244. being

  3245. transported

  3246. to

  3247. the

  3248. destination

  3249. was not

  3250. contingent

  3251. on the

  3252. intensity

  3253. of their

  3254. faith

  3255. but on

  3256. the

  3257. reliability

  3258. of that

  3259. plane

  3260. so what

  3261. mattered

  3262. was that

  3263. they had

  3264. enough

  3265. faith

  3266. to get

  3267. on that

  3268. plane

  3269. that's

  3270. what

  3271. mattered

  3272. becoming

  3273. a Christian

  3274. is similar

  3275. our salvation

  3276. does not

  3277. depend on

  3278. the intensity

  3279. of our

  3280. faith

  3281. but on

  3282. the

  3283. utter

  3284. dependability

  3285. and

  3286. infallibility

  3287. of our

  3288. Savior

  3289. Jesus

  3290. Christ

  3291. so just

  3292. as safe

  3293. passage is

  3294. guaranteed

  3295. for those

  3296. two passengers

  3297. so long

  3298. as they

  3299. boarded

  3300. the plane

  3301. salvation

  3302. is guaranteed

  3303. for you

  3304. as long

  3305. as you're

  3306. willing to

  3307. entrust

  3308. your life

  3309. to Jesus

  3310. and get

  3311. on that

  3312. plane

  3313. and live

  3314. your life

  3315. as a

  3316. Christian

  3317. abiding

  3318. in his

  3319. word

  3320. seeking

  3321. to obey

  3322. him

  3323. and all

  3324. that he

  3325. calls

  3326. you to

  3327. that's

  3328. what it

  3329. means

  3330. to believe

  3331. that Jesus

  3332. is the

  3333. Christ

  3334. the son

  3335. of God

  3336. and when

  3337. we do

  3338. that by

  3339. believing

  3340. we will

  3341. have life

  3342. in his

  3343. name

  3344. Jesus

  3345. died

  3346. and rose

  3347. again

  3348. so that by

  3349. believing

  3350. that he

  3351. is the

  3352. son of

  3353. God

  3354. we might

  3355. receive

  3356. eternal

  3357. life

  3358. my prayer

  3359. this morning

  3360. it's all

  3361. of you

  3362. that none

  3363. of you

  3364. will miss

  3365. that

  3366. opportunity

  3367. but that

  3368. we'll

  3369. have

  3370. enjoy

  3371. be able

  3372. to enjoy

  3373. the eternal

  3374. life

  3375. he won

  3376. for us

  3377. when he

  3378. resurrected

  3379. from the

  3380. dead

  3381. let's

  3382. pray

  3383. together

  3384. do

  3385. believe

  3386. help

  3387. our

  3388. unbelief

  3389. faith

  3390. itself

  3391. is a

  3392. gift

  3393. from you

  3394. so we

  3395. ask

  3396. for that

  3397. precious

  3398. gift

  3399. for all

  3400. of us

  3401. so we

  3402. may

  3403. continue

  3404. to live

  3405. a life

  3406. of faith

  3407. depending

  3408. on you

  3409. relying

  3410. on your

  3411. work

  3412. on the

  3413. cross

  3414. your

  3415. salvation

  3416. that you

  3417. won

  3418. for us

  3419. at no

  3420. cost

  3421. to us

  3422. but

  3423. at the

  3424. eternal

  3425. cost

  3426. of the

  3427. death

  3428. of the

  3429. son

  3430. of God

  3431. oh

  3432. Lord

  3433. capture

  3434. our

  3435. imagination

  3436. our

  3437. hearts

  3438. our

  3439. love

  3440. there's

  3441. nothing

  3442. more

  3443. beautiful

  3444. than what

  3445. you have

  3446. done for

  3447. us

  3448. we love

  3449. you

  3450. we want

  3451. to follow

  3452. you

  3453. thank you

  3454. for this

  3455. wonderful

  3456. day we get

  3457. to celebrate

  3458. your

  3459. resurrection

  3460. in Jesus

  3461. name we

  3462. pray

  3463. amen

  3464. you

  3465. next day

  3466. an

  3467. one
