  1. Worldview is the comprehensive perception of reality, right?

  2. We try to figure out how humanity relates to the rest of the world.

  3. And every worldview has to answer three fundamental questions.

  4. One is, how are things supposed to be?

  5. What's the ideal state?

  6. And secondly, what is the main problem with the way things are?

  7. And thirdly, what is the solution and how can it be reached?

  8. For example, Plato and much of Greek thought that the main problem with the world was the body, the material things.

  9. And so they encouraged philosophy and the cultivation of virtue as a way to transcend the material universe.

  10. Karl Marx blames unjust economic systems and class struggles for the world's ills.

  11. And so to him, the solution was the communist state.

  12. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the romanticists thought that the problem in society was industrialization, technology.

  13. And so their solution was to return to art, to nature, and to primitive freedom.

  14. And nowadays, what's popular is it's the worldview of the Silicon Valley,

  15. who believes that the power of technology, they believe in the power of technology to solve all social ills.

  16. But philosopher Leslie Stevenson, who teaches in the UK, in his classic introduction to the Western worldviews,

  17. entitled Seven Theories of Human Nature, makes a really insightful observation that sets Christianity apart from the other worldviews.

  18. And he writes,

  19. So then in locating the fundamental problem of humanity in the relationship with God,

  20. the disruption of our relationship with God,

  21. and offering a solution not by just what we can do to solve it,

  22. but what God has done, the initiative he has taken to solve it,

  23. Christianity, the Bible, offers an answer that's unique to those three questions.

  24. And we found out the answer to the first question,

  25. how are things supposed to be, what's the ideal state, last week.

  26. We were created for worship, which entails our work, and for relationship with God.

  27. And then now today we find here in this passage the answers to the second and third questions.

  28. What is the main problem with the way things are, and what is the solution, and how can it be realized?

  29. And Genesis 3 teaches us the world is disordered by our sinful rebellion.

  30. And we can reorder our worship of God and relationship with the world only by believing in Jesus Christ.

  31. And so you're going to talk about that in three phases.

  32. We'll talk about first the character of sin, then the consequences of sin,

  33. and third the cure for sin, the character, consequences, and the cure.

  34. Verse 1 begins ominously.

  35. Now, the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  36. I'll explain the identity of the serpent more clearly later,

  37. but for now it's important to note that it's an actual serpent.

  38. It's a snake.

  39. That's why it says the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  40. So this is a serpent, a snake that the Lord God had made.

  41. And this crafted serpent approaches the woman and says to her,

  42. Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  43. But there's a, it seems like an innocent question at first,

  44. but there's sinister intent there, right?

  45. Because what God actually said in chapter 2, 16, 17 was,

  46. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

  47. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,

  48. for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

  49. But the serpent, you know, shrewdly and subversively phrases that question

  50. in a way that makes God look stingy and, you know, stringent, right?

  51. He says, Did God actually say you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  52. And as the Bible commentator Gordon Wenham puts it,

  53. it's a total travesty of God's original generous permission.

  54. He said, Here's all of it.

  55. You can have it all, except for that one thing.

  56. But Satan makes it seem like, No, he told you not to have anything.

  57. And so, not only that, and serpent uses a word for God.

  58. So, previous to this, all the references to God in chapter 2

  59. refer to God as the Lord God.

  60. So, not just the generic God, but the Lord God,

  61. referring to his covenant name, which points to his relationship,

  62. covenant relationship with Adam and Eve.

  63. But the serpent surely avoids that reference

  64. and simply calls him God, the generic God,

  65. the distant God, the creator that doesn't really care about you,

  66. that God, he says.

  67. So, the God, did God actually say to you,

  68. You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  69. And in verses 2 to 3, Eve does correct the serpent,

  70. but not precisely and not fully.

  71. She says, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

  72. but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree

  73. that is in the midst of the garden,

  74. neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  75. So, first, God had said,

  76. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

  77. but Eve kind of waters down that emphatically generous provision of God.

  78. So, she doesn't mention that God said,

  79. Surely eat of every tree.

  80. And secondly, Eve adapts the serpent's distant way of referring to God.

  81. She doesn't say, Lord God.

  82. She says, God.

  83. And then third, there is a troubling ambiguity in Eve's summary of God's prohibition.

  84. Because she says that God told them not to eat of the fruit of the tree

  85. that is in the midst of the garden.

  86. But in chapter 2, verse 9,

  87. he told us that both the tree of life

  88. and the tree of knowledge of good and evil

  89. are in the midst of the garden.

  90. So, which tree is she talking about?

  91. Maybe she thinks God prohibited both of them,

  92. everything, all the tree in the garden, from them.

  93. And then fourth,

  94. and this is the most alarming of everything that Eve changes in this passage,

  95. she adds an additional element to God's prohibition.

  96. It says,

  97. Neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  98. God had mentioned nothing about touching the tree.

  99. There's no problem with touching the tree.

  100. He just said to don't eat of it.

  101. But Eve adds to God's law,

  102. and in doing so, actually subtracts from it.

  103. And you can see that in saying that,

  104. she's already adopting the serpent's attitude,

  105. thinking that God's harsh, repressive, stringent.

  106. Instead of acknowledging his generosity,

  107. oh, this distant God, he says,

  108. you can't even touch it.

  109. Don't even touch the tree.

  110. So, you can kind of anticipate what's going to happen after Eve's response.

  111. And so, having definitely shifted Eve's attention from appreciating God's provision

  112. to doubting his provision,

  113. he goes directly to impugn God's motives in verse 4.

  114. But the serpent said to the woman,

  115. You will not surely die,

  116. for God knows that when you eat of it,

  117. your eyes will be opened,

  118. and you will be like God,

  119. knowing good and evil.

  120. God said,

  121. you will surely die when you do this.

  122. And the serpent says,

  123. you will not surely die.

  124. And the implication, of course,

  125. is that God's, you know,

  126. kind of selfish.

  127. He's thinking about himself.

  128. He's maybe even jealous.

  129. He doesn't.

  130. He wants to make sure he withholds this good thing from Adam and Eve.

  131. So, you know what's really going on, Eve?

  132. It's not that there's anything bad about eating from this tree.

  133. In fact, it's going to make you more like God and open your eyes.

  134. God just doesn't want that for you.

  135. He's trying to withhold that from you.

  136. So let's ask at this point,

  137. what exactly is the tree of knowledge, good and evil?

  138. Because sometimes people think about it as an apple tree.

  139. It doesn't actually say that it's an apple tree.

  140. It comes from the Latin word for apple,

  141. which means also,

  142. it's also the same word for evil.

  143. That's why that was used to represent the tree of knowledge,

  144. good and evil in the past.

  145. But what in fact was a tree,

  146. it was a poisonous tree.

  147. Like what's going on?

  148. Why does it cause death?

  149. And why does God forbid it?

  150. And since tree of life,

  151. according to verse 22,

  152. gives life,

  153. eternal life,

  154. it seems that the tree of knowledge of good and evil

  155. should give knowledge of good and evil.

  156. Right?

  157. That'd be a fair assumption.

  158. And if that's the case,

  159. then why does God withhold it from Adam and Eve?

  160. Isn't knowledge a good thing?

  161. Right?

  162. In fact,

  163. isn't the whole book of Proverbs

  164. pointed to,

  165. you know,

  166. given to us to discern good from good and evil?

  167. Isn't the whole point of the book of Proverbs

  168. to pursue knowledge and wisdom?

  169. Right?

  170. In fact,

  171. Psalm 19,

  172. 7 to 8,

  173. teaches that the law of the Lord

  174. makes wise the simple

  175. and gives light to the eyes.

  176. Sounds a lot like the tree of knowledge,

  177. good and evil.

  178. So verse 5,

  179. serpent promises Eve,

  180. your eyes will be opened.

  181. And then it says in verse 6

  182. that the woman saw

  183. that the tree was to be desired

  184. to make one wise.

  185. So they seek that,

  186. seek wisdom,

  187. seek that.

  188. But why doesn't God want this wisdom

  189. for Adam and Eve?

  190. And the reason is this,

  191. right?

  192. Because though the Psalms

  193. often praise the law of God

  194. and the Proverbs

  195. enjoin us to pursue His wisdom,

  196. the law and the wisdom

  197. that we pursue

  198. is always in reference to God.

  199. It's the wisdom and knowledge

  200. that's from God,

  201. not knowledge and wisdom

  202. that's apart from God.

  203. So Proverbs 1, 7 says,

  204. the fear of the Lord

  205. is the beginning of knowledge.

  206. Proverbs 21, 30 says,

  207. no wisdom,

  208. no understanding,

  209. no counsel

  210. can avail against the Lord.

  211. There's wisdom and knowledge

  212. that's God's unique prerogative.

  213. And we ought to pursue wisdom

  214. and knowledge

  215. in submission to Him

  216. and not in rebellion against Him.

  217. We're supposed to get wisdom

  218. and knowledge from Him,

  219. not apart from Him.

  220. So what Eve's doing here

  221. is not just seeking moral knowledge,

  222. she's seeking moral autonomy.

  223. She wants to know for herself

  224. and to decide for herself

  225. what is right and wrong,

  226. not to get it from the Lord God

  227. who created her

  228. and designed her

  229. to live for Him.

  230. And it's not that Adam and Eve,

  231. if you think about it,

  232. didn't know at all

  233. what was good and evil, right?

  234. I mean, they did know to a degree

  235. because the Lord God said,

  236. you may surely eat

  237. of every tree of the garden.

  238. That's good.

  239. You can do that.

  240. But then He says specifically

  241. of the tree of knowledge

  242. of good and evil,

  243. you shall not eat

  244. for in the day you eat of it,

  245. you shall surely die.

  246. That was not good.

  247. And they knew that.

  248. They knew in that sense

  249. what was good and what was evil,

  250. what was right and what was wrong

  251. because they knew

  252. what God had told them,

  253. what He had told them not to do.

  254. But by taking the fruit,

  255. the serpent is cunningly

  256. manipulating Eve

  257. to be the arbiter of goodness

  258. and evil herself,

  259. to decide for herself

  260. what is good and what is evil.

  261. Jenny once told me about this,

  262. actually,

  263. and I confirmed it

  264. in a Harvard Gazette article.

  265. It was actually written

  266. two years ago today

  267. about a Harvard seal.

  268. If you guys have seen it,

  269. it's three books,

  270. open books,

  271. has the word veritas in it,

  272. which is the Latin word

  273. for truth.

  274. And it's not,

  275. that's not the original design.

  276. The 17th century design

  277. that the Puritans had,

  278. the first two books were open,

  279. but the third book was closed.

  280. It's not open.

  281. And it was to suggest

  282. that the first two books

  283. are God's revelation,

  284. scripture,

  285. the Old and the New Testaments.

  286. And the third book

  287. was supposed to represent

  288. the fact that there is

  289. knowledge and wisdom

  290. that is reserved for God alone.

  291. Compared to that

  292. profound theological truth,

  293. the new seal looks

  294. a little shallow,

  295. doesn't it?

  296. Now we think,

  297. yeah,

  298. we can attain all knowledge

  299. for ourselves.

  300. Human autonomy,

  301. that's really what's going on

  302. with Eve's sin,

  303. right here.

  304. It's the essence

  305. of human hubris

  306. to think that we can be

  307. the masters of our own faith,

  308. to think that we can attain

  309. all knowledge

  310. and be totally autonomous

  311. apart from God

  312. and live without reference

  313. to God.

  314. The part of root

  315. of every sin is,

  316. that's why it's pride

  317. and unbelief.

  318. Those two things,

  319. they're flips,

  320. two sides of the same coin,

  321. pride and unbelief

  322. are at the root

  323. of every single sin.

  324. It's an act of treason,

  325. really.

  326. Ultimate rebellion,

  327. disbelieving God

  328. and then believing

  329. that they can be like God,

  330. believing that we can be

  331. like God.

  332. And notice how the serpent

  333. never makes

  334. a direct suggestion to Eve,

  335. you know,

  336. you should really eat

  337. of the tree of the knowledge

  338. of good and evil.

  339. He doesn't do that.

  340. He understands

  341. the art of seduction.

  342. He simply presents

  343. an alternative

  344. to God's command

  345. and makes it seem

  346. like it's more desirable.

  347. Sin looks attractive

  348. in this picture.

  349. You see this in verse 6.

  350. Read that with me.

  351. So when the woman saw

  352. that the tree

  353. was good for food

  354. and that it was

  355. a delight to the eyes

  356. and that the tree

  357. was to be desired

  358. to make one wise,

  359. she took of its fruit

  360. and ate

  361. and she also gave some

  362. to her husband

  363. who was with her

  364. and he ate.

  365. It was good,

  366. delightful,

  367. desirable,

  368. sin looks attractive,

  369. looks good.

  370. Vices,

  371. sins,

  372. have to masquerade

  373. as virtues

  374. in order to be

  375. appealing to us.

  376. You see this everywhere.

  377. Lust masquerades

  378. as love.

  379. Selfishness masquerades

  380. as self-love

  381. or self-esteem.

  382. Abuse masquerades

  383. as discipline.

  384. Slutfulness masquerades

  385. as being relaxed

  386. and laid back.

  387. Pride masquerades

  388. as being confident.

  389. Selfish ambition

  390. masquerades

  391. as drive

  392. and industriousness.

  393. Envy masquerades

  394. as righteous indignation.

  395. Lack of faith

  396. masquerades

  397. as reasonableness.

  398. And cynicism

  399. masquerades

  400. as wisdom.

  401. Licentiousness

  402. masquerades

  403. as progressiveness.

  404. Fear of man

  405. masquerades

  406. as humility.

  407. Mockery

  408. and scorn

  409. masquerades

  410. as witticism.

  411. Gossip

  412. masquerades

  413. as concern.

  414. Permissiveness

  415. masquerades

  416. as tolerance.

  417. Isn't that true?

  418. Sin always looks good.

  419. It's attractive.

  420. We do it

  421. because we want

  422. to do it.

  423. And that's

  424. why sin

  425. is ultimately

  426. so grievous

  427. to God.

  428. Not only

  429. because we're

  430. pridefully

  431. declaring

  432. that we know

  433. better than God

  434. does,

  435. but because

  436. we're also

  437. faithlessly

  438. denying

  439. God's

  440. generous

  441. provision

  442. for us,

  443. His goodness

  444. toward us.

  445. We're doing

  446. exactly what

  447. Eve did

  448. in thinking

  449. that God

  450. is stringent.

  451. He's withholding

  452. something from us.

  453. He's being

  454. wicked toward us.

  455. He's not being

  456. good and generous

  457. toward us.

  458. That's why

  459. sin is grievous.

  460. Because God's

  461. heart toward

  462. His openness

  463. is generous

  464. and good.

  465. He gives us

  466. all that is

  467. good and provides

  468. for us.

  469. Yet we think

  470. of Him

  471. and we think

  472. of the sins,

  473. the other things

  474. that attract us

  475. and we see

  476. those things

  477. and say,

  478. no,

  479. that's better.

  480. God's withholding

  481. something from me.

  482. This is better.

  483. That's so grievous

  484. to God.

  485. He's a generous

  486. Father.

  487. He's our

  488. loving creator.

  489. And so Eve

  490. takes the fruit

  491. and eats

  492. and gives it

  493. also to her husband.

  494. And now we come

  495. to verses 6 to 8

  496. which is the

  497. climactic moment

  498. of this whole narrative.

  499. Chapters 2 and 3

  500. is just really

  501. artistically structured.

  502. It's the whole thing

  503. is structured

  504. as a chiasm

  505. or it's symmetrically

  506. structured

  507. so that there's

  508. an element

  509. in the beginning

  510. that corresponds

  511. to an element

  512. in the end

  513. and they kind of

  514. come together

  515. to highlight

  516. what's in the middle.

  517. So that's what's

  518. going on.

  519. So first,

  520. let me show you

  521. in chapter 2

  522. verses 5 to 17

  523. God plants

  524. the Garden of Eden

  525. and then brings

  526. the tree of life

  527. in the midst of it

  528. and then forms man

  529. from the dust

  530. of the ground

  531. and then puts him

  532. there to work it

  533. and keep it.

  534. So that's what happens

  535. in that first section.

  536. And in the corresponding

  537. section at the end

  538. it's God banishes

  539. Adam and Eve

  540. from the Garden of Eden

  541. and then

  542. so that they may

  543. not eat

  544. from the tree of life

  545. and then instead

  546. of working the garden

  547. now Adam must

  548. work the ground

  549. from which he was taken

  550. and the keeping duty

  551. that was given

  552. to Adam

  553. is now given

  554. to the cherubim

  555. to keep Adam

  556. from coming

  557. into the garden.

  558. You see all the

  559. stuff that happens.

  560. So this structure

  561. intentionally highlights

  562. the consequences

  563. of sin.

  564. So after that

  565. is the second element

  566. chapter 2

  567. verses 18 to 25

  568. it conveys

  569. the original ideal

  570. of creation.

  571. man rules

  572. over the earth

  573. and its animals

  574. along with the woman

  575. his perfect helpmate

  576. and then the scene

  577. ends with how

  578. the man and wife

  579. will procreate together

  580. and how they were

  581. naked but unashamed.

  582. And then the

  583. corresponding section

  584. in chapter 3

  585. is verses 14 to 21

  586. that's the fallen

  587. reality of creation.

  588. There is perpetual

  589. enmity now

  590. between the woman

  591. and the servant

  592. and between the man

  593. and the woman

  594. and the scene

  595. also ends

  596. with the mention

  597. of procreation

  598. and this time

  599. instead of

  600. being naked

  601. and unashamed

  602. God clothes Adam

  603. and Eve

  604. in garments of skin.

  605. So again

  606. that corresponding

  607. element

  608. the consequences

  609. of sin.

  610. And then the

  611. third element

  612. is chapter 3

    Isaiah 3:1–5

  613. verses 1 to 5

  614. which says

  615. that the crafty

  616. serpent tempts

  617. Eve to eat

  618. from the tree

  619. of knowledge

  620. of good and evil

  621. by saying three

  622. things about the tree.

  623. And then later

  624. in verses 9 to 13

  625. after eating

  626. from the tree

  627. of knowledge

  628. of good and evil

  629. Adam and Eve

  630. discover that

  631. they are naked.

  632. The word naked

  633. is a word play

  634. on the word crafty.

  635. They look exactly

  636. the same.

  637. Almost exactly

  638. the same.

  639. And then God

  640. poses three questions

  641. to Adam and Eve.

  642. You guys see

  643. the structure

  644. I'm talking about?

  645. And now all this

  646. is intended

  647. to highlight

  648. the element

  649. in the middle

  650. which is where

  651. we are.

  652. Verses 6 to 8

  653. Man and woman

  654. are standing alone

  655. in the middle

  656. of the garden

  657. and the woman

  658. listens to the serpent

  659. and the man

  660. listens to the woman

  661. and God

  662. is not listened

  663. to by the man.

  664. So that's

  665. it points out

  666. the hierarchy

  667. that gets broken

  668. and subverted

  669. here.

  670. And even the way

  671. the verses 6 to 8

  672. are phrased

  673. really highlight

  674. the fact that

  675. Adam and Eve

  676. really is usurping

  677. God's rights

  678. as a creator.

  679. So if you look

  680. at verse 6 to 8

  681. it's just staccato pace

  682. rapid pace

  683. there's a lot of action

  684. the woman saw

  685. she took

  686. and ate

  687. and she also gave

  688. some to her husband

  689. and he ate.

  690. And all of these

  691. things are things

  692. that previously

  693. were attributed

  694. to God

  695. God's action

  696. right?

  697. If you remember

  698. in creation

  699. God saw

  700. that it was good

  701. right?

  702. But now it's the woman

  703. that sees

  704. that the fruit

  705. is good

  706. right?

  707. And then it says

  708. that you know

  709. God took

  710. the rift

  711. from Adam

  712. and formed Eve

  713. with it

  714. and then God

  715. brought Eve

  716. to Adam

  717. but now it says

  718. the woman

  719. took of the fruit

  720. and ate it

  721. right?

  722. And then

  723. so that

  724. God's taking

  725. the rift

  726. from Adam

  727. but also

  728. God taking

  729. the man

  730. and putting

  731. him in the

  732. garden of Eden

  733. now eats

  734. the woman

  735. that takes

  736. of the fruit

  737. and eats.

  738. And then

  739. third

  740. making

  741. right?

  742. Up to this point

  743. it was God

  744. who had done

  745. all the making

  746. to provide

  747. for the man's

  748. need

  749. but now

  750. after their sin

  751. they themselves

  752. make for

  753. themselves

  754. loincloths

  755. to clothe themselves.

  756. God's not

  757. providing for them

  758. in that scene

  759. after sin

  760. they have to

  761. provide for themselves

  762. because they

  763. have usurped

  764. the creator's rights.

  765. So then

  766. in these

  767. three verses

  768. verses 6 to 8

  769. the creators

  770. the created order

  771. the divinely

  772. instituted order

  773. in creation

  774. is inverted

  775. it's turned

  776. upside down.

  777. God as the creator

  778. of the heavens

  779. and the earth

  780. rules over it all

  781. and then he formed

  782. man to rule

  783. over the earth

  784. as his representative

  785. and then he gave

  786. Eve to him

  787. as his helper

  788. and gave him

  789. the responsibility

  790. to lead her

  791. and to represent her

  792. and then

  793. together

  794. men and women

  795. were to rule

  796. over the earth

  797. which included

  798. all the animals

  799. right?

  800. So the creational

  801. order was

  802. God

  803. man

  804. woman

  805. animals

  806. but in

  807. verses 6 to 8

  808. the woman

  809. listens to the serpent

  810. which she's supposed

  811. to rule over

  812. and the man

  813. listens to the woman

  814. whom he's supposed

  815. to lead

  816. and take responsibility

  817. for

  818. and then

  819. they both

  820. together

  821. disobey

  822. and rebel

  823. against God

  824. so the whole

  825. thing

  826. is inverted

  827. and notice

  828. in verse 6

  829. it says

  830. she gave some

  831. to her husband

  832. who was

  833. with her

  834. right?

  835. Adam's there

  836. all along

  837. right?

  838. So people think

  839. sometimes

  840. oh it's Eve's fault

  841. she's the one

  842. that took it

  843. Adam's right there

  844. and you know what

  845. he's the one

  846. that heard

  847. God's command

  848. to not take

  849. from the tree

  850. of the knowledge

  851. of good and evil

  852. Eve wasn't there

  853. he is the one

  854. that God gave the charge

  855. to take responsibility

  856. for his wife

  857. instead he is

  858. you know

  859. classically passive

  860. just letting the woman

  861. do what she wants

  862. and just following

  863. her lead

  864. forsaking his responsibility

  865. and sins

  866. against

  867. God

  868. and what happens

  869. now we turn to

  870. the consequences

  871. of sin

  872. verse 7

  873. to 8

  874. verse 7

  875. it says

  876. then the eyes

  877. of both

  878. were opened

  879. now this part

  880. the serpent

  881. got right

  882. but if the devil

  883. tells you the truth

  884. it's always a half truth

  885. intended to deceive

  886. right?

  887. so their eyes

  888. were opened

  889. but instead of

  890. gaining great knowledge

  891. and wisdom

  892. the rest of the verse

  893. says that they knew

  894. they were naked

  895. that's ironic

  896. it's really tragic

  897. because I told you

  898. about the word play

  899. between crafty

  900. and naked

  901. while this great

  902. knowledge you gained

  903. from following

  904. the crafty serpent

  905. you discover

  906. that you're naked

  907. that's it

  908. now verse 8

  909. continues

  910. and they heard

  911. the sound

  912. of the Lord God

  913. walking in the garden

  914. in the cool of the day

  915. and the man

  916. and his wife

  917. hid themselves

  918. from the presence

  919. of the Lord God

  920. among the trees

  921. of the garden

  922. so not only

  923. are Adam and Eve

  924. ashamed of their

  925. own nakedness

  926. with each other

  927. now they're hiding

  928. from the Lord God

  929. their creator also

  930. now instead of

  931. intimacy

  932. and complete openness

  933. that they used to enjoy

  934. now there's fear

  935. and shame

  936. in humanity

  937. and isn't it interesting

  938. that human beings

  939. are the only

  940. creatures of the world

  941. that wear clothes

  942. animals don't wear clothes

  943. parallel wears clothes

  944. only because Ray and Carolyn

  945. put it on

  946. right

  947. it's because of the shame

  948. that we experience

  949. due to sin

  950. due to our loss

  951. of innocence

  952. now that doesn't mean

  953. that we should embrace

  954. our primal nakedness

  955. and then go skinny dipping

  956. somewhere

  957. right

  958. to return to

  959. Eden's bliss

  960. immodest exposure

  961. and public nudity

  962. are acts of denial

  963. and defiance

  964. of the moral reality

  965. that we are fallen

  966. from where we were

  967. that something is wrong

  968. in this world

  969. so every time

  970. we put on clothes

  971. in the morning

  972. it's a reminder

  973. for us

  974. that we are sinners

  975. in need

  976. of God's gracious

  977. covering

  978. that's the real purpose

  979. of clothes

  980. so when God comes

  981. it is said

  982. in verse 8

  983. that he was walking

  984. in the garden

  985. in the cool

  986. of the day

  987. and the word

  988. translated here

  989. as cool

  990. is the same word

  991. translated spirit

  992. or wind

  993. or breath

  994. elsewhere

  995. so the wind

  996. of the day

  997. the breath

  998. of the day

  999. it's referring

  1000. to the cool

  1001. wind

  1002. in the early

  1003. evening

  1004. that drives

  1005. away

  1006. the heat

  1007. of the day

  1008. right

  1009. so it's that

  1010. time of day

  1011. and God

  1012. is in the garden

  1013. and the wind

  1014. is because

  1015. it's referenced

  1016. often to the spirit

  1017. right

  1018. so just like

  1019. in Genesis 1

  1020. to 2

  1021. the spirit

  1022. of God

  1023. was hovering

  1024. over the face

  1025. of the waters

  1026. so just as

  1027. the spirit

  1028. of God

  1029. was hovering

  1030. over the face

  1031. of the waters

  1032. in the act

  1033. of creation

  1034. now in God's

  1035. act of redemption

  1036. the spirit

  1037. of God

  1038. is also

  1039. in the garden

  1040. looking for

  1041. his covenant

  1042. subjects

  1043. and once again

  1044. the narrative

  1045. restores God's name

  1046. it's not God

  1047. anymore

  1048. it's Lord God

  1049. again

  1050. because the Lord

  1051. God has come

  1052. for a reckoning

  1053. to address

  1054. the subjects

  1055. who have rebelled

  1056. against him

  1057. and so naturally

  1058. they hide

  1059. but of course

  1060. it's God

  1061. you can't hide

  1062. from him

  1063. he asks him

  1064. verse 9

  1065. a rhetorical question

  1066. really where are you

  1067. and implicit

  1068. within the question

  1069. is why are you

  1070. hiding from me

  1071. and they respond

  1072. Adam responds

  1073. I heard

  1074. the sound

  1075. of you

  1076. in the garden

  1077. and I was afraid

  1078. because I was naked

  1079. and I hid myself

1080. it's such an illuminating tale

  1081. just because

  1082. you see the classic

  1083. human response

  1084. to wrongdoing

  1085. and guilt

  1086. and all throughout this

  1087. right

  1088. because that's a classic

  1089. tactic

  1090. he's basically avoiding

  1091. eye contact

  1092. and diverting attention

  1093. he's like

  1094. oh no

  1095. I'm naked

  1096. that's why I hid

1097. but that's not the point

  1098. right

  1099. I mean

  1100. God knows

  1101. what's going on

  1102. so he asks

  1103. who told you

  1104. that you were naked

  1105. have you eaten

  1106. of the tree

  1107. of which I commanded

  1108. you not to eat

  1109. and then

  1110. another classic

  1111. defense mechanism

  1112. blame shifting

  1113. I mean

  1114. you guys laughed

  1115. out loud

  1116. because it really

  1117. is funny

  1118. what happens

  1119. the man said

  1120. the woman

  1121. whom you gave me

  1122. the woman

  1123. whom you gave

  1124. to be with me

  1125. she gave me

  1126. fruit of the tree

  1127. and I ate

  1128. I mean

  1129. he's not just

  1130. blaming

  1131. his wife

  1132. he's accusing

  1133. God

  1134. the woman

  1135. you gave me

  1136. you thought

  1137. it was a grand

  1138. old idea

  1139. oh man

  1140. that was a mistake

  1141. and so Eve

  1142. was designed

  1143. to be Adam's helper

  1144. instead of

  1145. helping hindered him

  1146. and so

  1147. and Adam

  1148. who's not supposed

  1149. to take responsibility

  1150. for Eve

  1151. and to represent her

  1152. just abdicates

  1153. completely

  1154. and blames her

  1155. lays all the

  1156. responsibility on her

  1157. and then the woman

  1158. follows suit

  1159. by shifting her

  1160. blame as well

  1161. verse 13

  1162. the serpent

  1163. deceived me

  1164. and I ate

  1165. the serpent

  1166. mind you

  1167. according to verse 1

  1168. the Lord God

  1169. had made

  1170. the serpent

  1171. you made

  1172. the peace

  1173. and harmony

  1174. that characterized

  1175. the garden of Eden

  1176. is now shattered

  1177. sin

  1178. sin

  1179. has alienated

  1180. man from God

  1181. and woman

  1182. from man

  1183. and animals

  1184. from humanity

  1185. and notice how

  1186. the Lord God

  1187. comes to reestablish

  1188. that created order

  1189. even though the woman

  1190. was the leading

  1191. protagonist

  1192. in the preceding

  1193. narrative

  1194. he first comes

  1195. to man

  1196. because he's

  1197. holding him

  1198. responsible

  1199. because he had

  1200. appointed him

  1201. as head

  1202. that's why in Romans 5

  1203. it teaches that sin

  1204. and death

  1205. enter humanity

  1206. through Adam

  1207. not Eve

  1208. because Adam

  1209. was the federal head

  1210. the representative head

  1211. in his marriage

  1212. and of humanity

  1213. at large

  1214. and then after

  1215. addressing Adam

  1216. that God

  1217. addresses

  1218. Eve

  1219. and then interestingly

  1220. God

  1221. doesn't

  1222. even give the serpent

  1223. a chance to speak

  1224. right

  1225. though the serpent

  1226. sought to

  1227. to be the man's

  1228. superior

  1229. and advisor

  1230. God doesn't even

  1231. deign to speak

  1232. to him

  1233. because Adam

  1234. and Eve

  1235. not the serpent

  1236. are his covenant

  1237. subjects

  1238. created in his image

  1239. and he holds

  1240. them responsible

  1241. and then God

  1242. utters a series

  1243. of curses

  1244. over creation

  1245. as consequences

  1246. of sin

  1247. and this is tragic

  1248. because if you remember

  1249. from Genesis 1

  1250. after each successive

  1251. act of God's creation

  1252. what does he do?

  1253. He blesses

1254. and now because of sin

  1255. he curses

  1256. his creation

  1257. verses 14

  1258. read with me

  1259. the Lord God

  1260. said to the serpent

  1261. because you have

  1262. done this

  1263. cursed are you

  1264. above all livestock

  1265. and above all

  1266. beasts of the field

  1267. and on your belly

  1268. you shall go

1269. and thus you shall eat

  1270. all the days

  1271. of your life

  1272. now

  1273. the serpent

  1274. was more crafty

  1275. but now he is

  1276. more cursed

  1277. than all the beasts

  1278. of the field

  1279. and Leviticus 11

  1280. and Deuteronomy 14

  1281. describe that animals

1282. that go on their belly

  1283. are detestable

  1284. and unfit

  1285. for consumption

  1286. and unfit

  1287. to be offered

  1288. for sacrifice

  1289. and so here

  1290. the serpent

  1291. is cursed

1292. to go on its belly

  1293. in fact the serpent

  1294. violates all the normal

  1295. classifications

  1296. of animals

1297. according to the Old Testament

  1298. doesn't fit neatly

1299. into any of the God's

  1300. created categories

  1301. it swarms

  1302. and it rides

1303. and so it makes it

  1304. the perfect

  1305. kind of a symbol

  1306. of everything

  1307. that is anti-God

  1308. anti-order of creation

  1309. so that's why

  1310. the serpent

1311. I think is so fitting

  1312. that's used here

  1313. so this is

  1314. and the punishment

  1315. is true

  1316. on both literal

  1317. and figurative levels

  1318. right

  1319. because literally

  1320. the serpent slithers

  1321. on the ground

1322. on the dust of the earth

  1323. so it's really

  1324. eating dust

  1325. all day long

  1326. but more importantly

  1327. figuratively

  1328. eating dust

  1329. represents

  1330. abject humiliation

  1331. complete humiliation

  1332. that's what you do

  1333. to your enemies

  1334. after you conquer them

  1335. if you look at

  1336. the Old Testament

  1337. see Psalm 72

  1338. 9

  1339. Solomon writes

  1340. that God's enemies

  1341. will lick the dust

  1342. so the serpent

  1343. then will face

  1344. ultimate humiliation

  1345. and defeat

  1346. that's what that

  1347. punishment implies

  1348. and God's curse

  1349. continues in verse 25

  1350. I will put enmity

  1351. between you

  1352. and the woman

  1353. and between your offspring

  1354. and her offspring

1355. he shall bruise your head

  1356. and you shall bruise

  1357. his heel

  1358. I'll explain

  1359. the theological

  1360. importance of this

  1361. later

  1362. but for now

  1363. this is literally true

  1364. the curse is still

  1365. very true

1366. I read earlier this year

1367. I think it was in January

  1368. in the Washington Post

  1369. they ran a story

  1370. about how Florida

  1371. is losing its battle

  1372. against snakes

  1373. the Everglades

  1374. are being over

  1375. you know

  1376. just overrun

  1377. by Burmese pythons

  1378. they're destroying

  1379. the wildlife

  1380. in fact

  1381. they're driving

  1382. some of them

  1383. near extinction

  1384. and so they had

  1385. to hire special

  1386. snake hunters

  1387. from India

  1388. to come over

  1389. and find them

  1390. and it's still

  1391. a losing battle

1392. this is still going on

  1393. women

  1394. their offspring

  1395. humanity

  1396. versus snakes

  1397. it's still going on

  1398. and of course

  1399. the favorite way

  1400. to kill a snake

1401. is to smash the head

  1402. right

  1403. I mean that's still

  1404. that's what's in view here

  1405. and then God turns

  1406. to the woman

  1407. in verse 16

  1408. and says

  1409. I will surely

  1410. multiply your pain

  1411. and childbearing

  1412. in pain

  1413. you shall bring forth

  1414. children

  1415. and notice

  1416. how merciful

  1417. God is here

  1418. I never noticed

  1419. this until

  1420. I was preparing

  1421. for this sermon

  1422. this week

  1423. is that

  1424. God

  1425. he curses

  1426. his creation

  1427. but he never

  1428. curses

  1429. his

  1430. man and a woman

  1431. he doesn't curse

1432. the man and a woman

  1433. he curses

  1434. the serpent

  1435. and he curses

  1436. the ground

  1437. but he doesn't

  1438. curse man

  1439. and a woman

  1440. because they're

  1441. still his

  1442. covenant people

  1443. because he still

  1444. loves them

  1445. right

  1446. what happens

  1447. instead

  1448. is that

  1449. their spheres

  1450. are disrupted

  1451. their responsibilities

  1452. are now going to

  1453. come with more

  1454. difficulty

  1455. and pain

  1456. pain

  1457. is the word

  1458. that's used

  1459. to describe

  1460. them

  1461. but curse

  1462. is not used

  1463. of them

  1464. it's only

  1465. used

  1466. of the serpent

  1467. and the ground

  1468. and here

  1469. God

  1470. addresses

  1471. the woman's

  1472. childbearing

  1473. and later

  1474. the man's

  1475. work

  1476. not because

  1477. the two

  1478. spheres

  1479. never overlap

  1480. or because

  1481. they ought

  1482. to be

  1483. strictly

  1484. separate

  1485. but because

  1486. they are

  1487. the woman

  1488. and the man's

  1489. primary spheres

  1490. the woman's

  1491. primary orientation

  1492. is toward

  1493. home

  1494. and toward

  1495. her children

  1496. note well

  1497. that here

  1498. childbearing

  1499. itself

  1500. is not

  1501. a curse

  1502. there's not

  1503. pain in

  1504. childbearing

  1505. but childbearing

  1506. is not

  1507. a curse

  1508. and pain

  1509. of childbearing

  1510. before epidural

  1511. was one of the

  1512. bitterest pains

  1513. known to humanity

  1514. frequently led

  1515. to death

  1516. and if you

  1517. look at

  1518. Genesis 2

  1519. 18

  1520. and 2

  1521. 23

  1522. to 24

  1523. being a man's

  1524. helper

  1525. and the mother

  1526. of children

  1527. constitute

  1528. a unique

  1529. role of woman

  1530. and that's why

  1531. it's highlighted

  1532. here and singled

  1533. out as

  1534. woman's

  1535. sphere

  1536. and giving

  1537. birth to

  1538. children

  1539. is seen

  1540. as

  1541. imitating

  1542. God

  1543. as his

  1544. image bearers

  1545. that's why

  1546. in Genesis

  1547. 5

  1548. 3

  1549. it says

  1550. Adam fathered

  1551. a son

  1552. in his

  1553. own likeness

  1554. after his

  1555. image

  1556. and named

  1557. him Seth

  1558. does sound

  1559. familiar to you

  1560. to procreate

  1561. procreation

  1562. is described

  1563. in exactly

  1564. the same

  1565. terms

  1566. as God's

  1567. creation

  1568. of man

  1569. and woman

  1570. in Genesis

  1571. 1

  1572. 26

  1573. to 27

  1574. and of course

  1575. the fact that

  1576. childbearing is

  1577. uniquely the

  1578. woman's

  1579. prerogative

  1580. is hardly a

  1581. striking insight

  1582. but many

  1583. women lose

  1584. sight of this

  1585. in a world

  1586. where gender

  1587. distinctions are

  1588. blurred

  1589. and women are

  1590. encouraged to do

  1591. the same things

  1592. that men do

  1593. right

  1594. and the

  1595. late

  1596. Elizabeth

  1597. Fox

  1598. Genevieve

  1599. who is a

  1600. feminist

  1601. historian

  1602. who directed

  1603. the women's

  1604. studies

  1605. department

  1606. at Emory

  1607. University

  1608. she writes

  1609. this in one

  1610. of her

  1611. books

  1612. she says

  1613. so long

  1614. as women

  1615. bear children

  1616. they will

  1617. not be

  1618. identical

  1619. to men

  1620. and hence

  1621. not equal

  1622. to them

  1623. in the end

  1624. the best

  1625. explanation

  1626. for their

  1627. economic

  1628. inequality

  1629. remains

  1630. women's

  1631. ability

  1632. to bear

  1633. children

  1634. the inequality

  1635. that no

  1636. amount of

  1637. social policy

  1638. can erase

  1639. social policy

  1640. can erase

  1641. the consequences

  1642. of that

  1643. inequality

  1644. but it is

  1645. unlikely to

  1646. accomplish

  1647. even that

  1648. much until

  1649. we replace

  1650. the feminist

  1651. quest for

  1652. an illusory

  1653. equality

  1654. with compassionate

  1655. attention to

  1656. the lives

  1657. most women

  1658. actually live

  1659. the unique

  1660. ability of the

  1661. woman to

  1662. bear children

  1663. should be

  1664. celebrated

  1665. not deprecated

  1666. and more

  1667. recently

  1668. in a New

  1669. York Times

  1670. article

  1671. it was

  1672. Judith

  1673. Shulovic

  1674. she's also a

  1675. feminist author

  1676. writes

  1677. it's entitled

  1678. How to Fix

  1679. Feminism

  1680. she writes

  1681. that Hillary

  1682. Clinton's

  1683. generation

  1684. aimed to

  1685. free women

  1686. from domestic

  1687. prisons

  1688. but work

  1689. is a prison

  1690. too

  1691. she writes

  1692. that most

  1693. feminist

  1694. policy makers

  1695. have often

  1696. focused on

  1697. benefits for

  1698. wage earning

  1699. women

  1700. but then she

  1701. asked

  1702. what about

  1703. the women

  1704. who want

  1705. to get out

  1706. of the

  1707. workplace

  1708. at least

  1709. for a while

  1710. and then

  1711. points to

  1712. the bill

  1713. that

  1714. representative

  1715. Nita

  1716. Lowy

  1717. apparently

  1718. introduced

  1719. in New

  1720. York

  1721. which would

  1722. give

  1723. social security

  1724. credit to

  1725. caregivers

  1726. who left

  1727. the labor

  1728. market

  1729. to cut

  1730. back on

  1731. hours

  1732. a public

  1733. nod to

  1734. the reality

  1735. that care

  1736. is work

  1737. and caregivers

  1738. merit the same

  1739. benefits as

  1740. other workers

  1741. mothering is

  1742. real work

  1743. mothering is

  1744. hard work

  1745. mothering is

  1746. significant work

  1747. and this is

  1748. especially appropriate

  1749. on Mother's Day

  1750. mothers should

  1751. be honored

  1752. not just

  1753. on Mother's

  1754. Day

  1755. but every

  1756. day

  1757. for their

  1758. invaluable

  1759. contribution

  1760. and irreplaceable

  1761. contribution

  1762. to society

  1763. and even

  1764. more importantly

  1765. for their

  1766. irreplaceable

  1767. contribution

  1768. to fulfilling

  1769. God's

  1770. intention

  1771. for humanity

  1772. having children

  1773. being a parent

  1774. is uniformly

  1775. seen as a

  1776. blessing

  1777. throughout

  1778. scripture

  1779. consider

  1780. psalm 127

  1781. 3

  1782. behold

  1783. children

  1784. are a

  1785. heritage

  1786. from the

  1787. Lord

  1788. the fruit

  1789. of the

  1790. womb

  1791. of reward

  1792. but unfortunately

  1793. this is

  1794. we have

  1795. in our

  1796. culture

  1797. have an

  1798. ambivalent

  1799. view of

  1800. children

  1801. on the

  1802. one hand

  1803. most couples

  1804. still want

  1805. to have

  1806. children

  1807. are disappointed

  1808. when their

  1809. attempts

  1810. fail

  1811. but on the

  1812. other hand

  1813. many couples

  1814. also delay

  1815. having children

  1816. for as long

  1817. as possible

  1818. in order to

  1819. pursue

  1820. their careers

  1821. and attain

  1822. financial stability

  1823. now there is

  1824. no strong

  1825. scriptural case

  1826. against

  1827. postponing

  1828. having children

  1829. sometimes

  1830. delaying

  1831. can help

  1832. a couple

  1833. to focus

  1834. on their

  1835. new relationship

  1836. especially during

  1837. their early

  1838. difficult years

  1839. of marriage

  1840. for some

  1841. but with that

  1842. said I can't

  1843. say that the

  1844. bible recommends

  1845. such a delay

  1846. either

  1847. and we have

  1848. to examine

  1849. our hearts

  1850. to see

  1851. if our

  1852. attitudes

  1853. to see

  1854. if there

  1855. isn't an

  1856. unbiblical

  1857. devaluation

  1858. of children

  1859. and nowadays

  1860. even the

  1861. people who

  1862. want children

  1863. often see them

  1864. as a burden

  1865. right

  1866. I saw

  1867. a meme

  1868. recently

  1869. and yes

  1870. Steve

  1871. I do know

  1872. what a

  1873. meme is

  1874. it has a

  1875. drawing of

  1876. a baby

  1877. on it

  1878. and it

  1879. reads

  1880. sometimes

  1881. when I get

  1882. sad about

  1883. not having

  1884. kids

  1885. I sleep

  1886. until noon

  1887. don't cook

  1888. or do

  1889. laundry

  1890. for a

  1891. week

  1892. watch

  1893. everything

  1894. but cartoons

  1895. and buy

  1896. myself

  1897. a gift

  1898. yeah

  1899. it's funny

  1900. right

  1901. but it's

  1902. also selfish

  1903. isn't it

  1904. and even

  1905. childish

  1906. right

  1907. our parents

  1908. or someone

  1909. else

  1910. made all

  1911. those sacrifices

  1912. to raise

  1913. us

  1914. but we're

  1915. not willing

  1916. to make

  1917. those sacrifices

  1918. for our

  1919. children

  1920. so what

  1921. if we can't

  1922. sleep until

  1923. noon

  1924. you don't get

  1925. to watch

  1926. any of your

  1927. favorite tv

  1928. shows

  1929. and you

  1930. have to

  1931. cook

  1932. and do

  1933. laundry

  1934. all the

  1935. time

  1936. so that

  1937. so what

  1938. if you

  1939. have to

  1940. give up

  1941. being able

  1942. to eat

  1943. out

  1944. all the

  1945. time

  1946. because

  1947. you have

  1948. to take

  1949. care

  1950. of your

  1951. kid

  1952. or to

  1953. provide

  1954. for your

  1955. kid

  1956. what if

  1957. we have

  1958. to give

  1959. up personal

  1960. downtime

  1961. so that

  1962. we have

  1963. time to

  1964. play with

  1965. our

  1966. children

  1967. we're

  1968. raising

  1969. up

  1970. another

  1971. human

  1972. being

  1973. made

  1974. in the

  1975. image

  1976. of

  1977. God

  1978. they

  1979. will

  1980. either

  1981. live

  1982. forever

  1983. with

  1984. God

  1985. or

  1986. perish

  1987. without

  1988. him

  1989. is that

  1990. not

  1991. a

  1992. worthy

  1993. weighty

  1994. task

  1995. to give

  1996. ourselves

  1997. to

  1998. let's

  1999. not let

  2000. our

  2001. children

  2002. grow up

  2003. with

  2004. the

  2005. impression

  2006. that

  2007. they

  2008. are

  2009. an

  2010. inconvenience

  2011. to

  2012. us

  2013. or

  2014. a

  2015. nuisance

  2016. this

  2017. kind

  2018. of

  2019. self

  2020. giving

  2021. sacrificial

  2022. love

  2023. should

  2024. not

  2025. be

  2026. foreign

  2027. to

  2028. people

  2029. who

  2030. follow

  2031. a

  2032. crucified

  2033. savior

  2034. who gave

  2035. his

  2036. life

  2037. to save

  2038. sinners

  2039. perhaps

  2040. you're a single

  2041. woman or

  2042. married but

  2043. for one reason

  2044. or another is unable

  2045. to have

  2046. children

  2047. if so let me

  2048. encourage you by

  2049. telling of another

  2050. way you can fulfill

  2051. his commission to be

  2052. fruitful and multiply

  2053. because in

  2054. Matthew 12

  2055. 49 to 50

  2056. Jesus says

  2057. here are my

  2058. mother and my

  2059. brothers

  2060. for whoever does

  2061. the will of my

  2062. father in heaven

  2063. is my brother and

  2064. sister and mother

  2065. teaching the importance

  2066. of the family of

  2067. God which will

  2068. outlast the

  2069. biological family

  2070. in 1st

  2071. timothy 5

  2072. 1 to 2

  2073. Paul writes

  2074. do not rebuke an

  2075. older man

  2076. and speaking to

  2077. people in the

  2078. church

  2079. do not rebuke an

  2080. older man but

  2081. encourage him as

  2082. you would a

  2083. father

  2084. younger men as

  2085. brothers

  2086. older women as

  2087. mothers

  2088. younger women as

  2089. sisters

  2090. in all purity

  2091. within the

  2092. spiritual family

  2093. of God the

  2094. church there

  2095. are numerous

  2096. opportunities for

  2097. all the women to

  2098. be mothers

  2099. to function as

  2100. spiritual mothers

  2101. and to lead

  2102. people to faith

  2103. to repentance

  2104. and belief

  2105. and in doing so

  2106. bear spiritual

  2107. children

  2108. that's kind of a

  2109. mother's day aside

2110. it was a little bit

  2111. long but now

  2112. getting back to

  2113. verse 16

  2114. and you can read

  2115. the second half of

  2116. what God tells

  2117. women

  2118. so your desire

  2119. shall be contrary

  2120. to your husband

  2121. but he shall

  2122. rule over you

  2123. it's not immediately

  2124. apparent what this

  2125. verse means but

  2126. it becomes clear if

2127. you compare it to a

  2128. very close parallel

  2129. in Genesis 4 7

  2130. where God tells

  2131. Cain

  2132. if you do well

  2133. will you not be

  2134. accepted

2135. and if you do not

  2136. do well

  2137. sin is crouching

  2138. at the door

  2139. its desire

  2140. is contrary to

  2141. you

  2142. but you must

  2143. rule over it

  2144. right

  2145. so same pair of

  2146. words desire

  2147. and rule

  2148. and they can

  2149. so that helps

  2150. us to understand

  2151. it

  2152. so once again

  2153. the word desire

  2154. is conscious

  2155. with rule

  2156. so it seems

  2157. to be a desire

  2158. to have

  2159. to control

  2160. to take possession

  2161. of

  2162. so the sin

  2163. desire

  2164. is to have

  2165. its way

  2166. with Cain

  2167. but Cain

  2168. must master it

  2169. must rule over it

  2170. and here

  2171. God declares

  2172. that the wife's

  2173. desire

  2174. will be to have

  2175. her way

  2176. with her husband

  2177. to rule over her

  2178. to control

  2179. but instead

  2180. the husband

  2181. will rule

  2182. over her

  2183. and the word

  2184. rule here

  2185. means to lord it

  2186. over someone

  2187. to dominate someone

  2188. it's a corruption

  2189. of the husband's

  2190. God given call

  2191. to headship

  2192. to represent

  2193. and take responsibly

  2194. for his wife

  2195. so instead

  2196. the husband

  2197. will be tempted

  2198. to make idol

  2199. a power

  2200. and to abuse

  2201. and rule over

  2202. his wife

  2203. and the histories

  2204. and literatures

  2205. of every culture

  2206. and every time

  2207. is littered

  2208. with examples

  2209. of male domination

  2210. and abuse

  2211. of women

  2212. this pronouncement

  2213. is all too true

  2214. and lastly

  2215. God turns to Adam

  2216. in verse 17

  2217. sorry it sounds

  2218. so hopeless guys

  2219. the hope is coming

  2220. at the end

  2221. lastly God turns

  2222. to Adam

  2223. in verse 17

  2224. it says

  2225. because you have

  2226. listened to the voice

  2227. of your wife

  2228. and have eaten

  2229. of the tree

2230. of which I commanded you

  2231. you shall not eat

  2232. of it

  2233. cursed is the ground

  2234. because of you

  2235. in pain

2236. you shall eat of it

  2237. all the days

  2238. of your life

  2239. for the woman

  2240. there is now

  2241. pain in childbearing

  2242. and for the man

  2243. now there is pain

  2244. in ground working

  2245. and the word

  2246. listen in Hebrew

  2247. has the same nuance

  2248. as the word

  2249. for obey

  2250. so here

  2251. again is God's

  2252. indictment

  2253. of Adam

  2254. he ought to have

  2255. represented Eve

  2256. and taken responsibility

  2257. for her

  2258. but instead

  2259. he passively

  2260. obeyed her

  2261. because you have

  2262. listened to the voice

  2263. of your wife

  2264. and have eaten

  2265. of the tree

  2266. of which I

  2267. commanded you

  2268. you shall not

  2269. eat of it

  2270. cursed is the ground

  2271. because of you

  2272. in pain

  2273. you shall eat

  2274. of it

  2275. all the days

  2276. of your life

  2277. thorns and

  2278. thistle

  2279. shall bring forth

  2280. for you

  2281. and you shall

  2282. eat the plants

  2283. of the field

  2284. by the sweat

  2285. of your face

  2286. you shall eat

  2287. bread

  2288. till you return

  2289. to the ground

  2290. for out of it

  2291. you were taken

  2292. for you are dust

  2293. and to dust

  2294. you shall return

  2295. this is the reason

  2296. why work

  2297. is work

  2298. no matter

  2299. what kind

  2300. of work

  2301. you do

  2302. work

  2303. is tough

  2304. right

  2305. and there are

  2306. days when you

  2307. don't want to

  2308. work

  2309. and I know

  2310. this empirically

  2311. because I have

  2312. the best job

  2313. in the world

  2314. and there are

  2315. still days

  2316. when I don't

  2317. want to work

  2318. that's why

  2319. the mantra

  2320. to do

  2321. what you love

  2322. and you'll

  2323. never work

  2324. a day in your

  2325. life is naive

  2326. and misleading

  2327. it's really

  2328. an ideological

  2329. tool of capitalism

  2330. to exploit

  2331. laborers

  2332. when you

  2333. recognize work

  2334. as work

  2335. you could put

  2336. appropriate

  2337. boundaries on it

  2338. protect yourself

  2339. so you have

  2340. time

  2341. for personal

  2342. things

  2343. and for family

  2344. things

  2345. but when you

  2346. think of work

  2347. as not work

  2348. then it just

  2349. bleeds over

  2350. all of your life

  2351. it runs your life

  2352. the biblical

  2353. perspective on work

  2354. is unparalleled

  2355. and its balance

  2356. on the one hand

2357. work is not a curse

  2358. so Adam was placed

  2359. in the garden

  2360. to work it

  2361. before the fall

  2362. of humanity

  2363. so we shouldn't

  2364. think of work

  2365. as something

  2366. to avoid

  2367. or escape

  2368. in fact

  2369. it confers

  2370. dignity

  2371. when we work

  2372. we're imitating

  2373. God who works

  2374. who created the world

2375. but on the other hand

  2376. work is cursed

  2377. it's not a curse

  2378. but it is cursed

  2379. so we shouldn't

  2380. naively think

  2381. that it's all

  2382. going to be roses

  2383. when we pursue

  2384. our work

  2385. there's pain

  2386. involved

  2387. setbacks

  2388. disappointments

  2389. difficulties

  2390. with every

  2391. type of work

  2392. and that's

  2393. not the worst

  2394. of the punishments

  2395. and by the way

  2396. I mentioned to you

  2397. last week

  2398. a couple books

  2399. that deal with

  2400. these chapters

  2401. covered in chapter 2

  2402. and 3

  2403. we bought some copies

2404. so that if you guys

  2405. are really interested

2406. and want to read it

  2407. you could grab one

  2408. if there's not enough

2409. for you at the end

  2410. you could borrow it

  2411. from someone

  2412. in the church

  2413. or buy it yourself

  2414. as well

  2415. and so that's not

2416. the worst of the punishment

2417. it says in verses 22

  2418. to 24

  2419. then the Lord God

  2420. said

  2421. behold the man

  2422. has become like

  2423. one of us

  2424. in knowing good

  2425. and evil

  2426. now lest he reach

  2427. out his hand

  2428. and take also

  2429. the tree of life

  2430. and eat

  2431. and live forever

  2432. therefore

  2433. the Lord God

  2434. sent him out

  2435. from the garden

  2436. of Eden

  2437. to work the ground

2438. from which he was taken

2439. he drove out the man

  2440. and at the east

  2441. of the garden

  2442. of Eden

  2443. he placed a cherubim

  2444. and a flaming sword

  2445. that turned every way

  2446. to guard the way

2447. to the tree of life

  2448. so they're expelled

  2449. banished

  2450. from the garden

  2451. of Eden

  2452. they thought

  2453. they would become

  2454. like God

  2455. in the full sense

  2456. but instead

  2457. they just gained

  2458. knowledge of good

  2459. and evil

  2460. which separates

  2461. and alienates them

  2462. from God further

  2463. and God

  2464. banishes them

2465. and this is an act

  2466. of grace

  2467. he says

  2468. lest he reach

  2469. out his hand

  2470. and take also

2471. of the tree of life

  2472. and eat

  2473. and live forever

  2474. because if he reaches

2475. out for the tree of life

  2476. and eats it

  2477. in his state

  2478. of alienation

  2479. from God

  2480. he will be in

  2481. forever a state

  2482. of rebellion

  2483. and alienation

  2484. from God

  2485. because there will be

  2486. no life to seek

  2487. so God

  2488. banishes him

  2489. because there can only

  2490. be life in him

  2491. with every death

  2492. every page

  2493. in the obituary

  2494. reminder

  2495. that something

  2496. is amiss

  2497. that we need God

  2498. that only he can

  2499. give us eternal life

  2500. but wait

  2501. didn't God say though

  2502. that on the day

  2503. they eat of it

  2504. they will die

2505. how come they don't die

  2506. maybe Satan

  2507. was telling the truth

  2508. and God

2509. was not telling the truth

  2510. of course

  2511. that's not the case

  2512. and Adam

  2513. will live

2514. to a ripe old age

  2515. of 930 years

  2516. according to Genesis 5-5

  2517. but the formula

  2518. you shall not

  2519. do something

  2520. for you shall

  2521. surely die

  2522. is the formula

  2523. for divine threats

  2524. in the Old Testament

  2525. so it's really

  2526. a sentencing

  2527. it's a legal

  2528. sentencing

  2529. so if that's

  2530. what's in view

  2531. then it means

  2532. that the day

  2533. they eat of it

  2534. they will be sentenced

  2535. to death

  2536. consigned to death

  2537. and that is exactly

  2538. what happens

  2539. God says to Adam

  2540. in verse 19

  2541. by the sweat

  2542. of your face

  2543. you shall eat bread

  2544. till you return

  2545. to the ground

  2546. for out of it

  2547. you were taken

  2548. for you are dust

  2549. and to dust

  2550. you shall return

  2551. dust

  2552. the ground

  2553. is again

  2554. a word play

  2555. the word Adam

  2556. comes from the word

  2557. Hebrew word for ground

  2558. so the ground

  2559. is

  2560. the man was formed

  2561. from the ground

2562. and then he was called

  2563. to cultivate the ground

2564. and then when he dies

  2565. he will return

  2566. to the ground

  2567. the ground

  2568. the dirt

  2569. it's his cradle

  2570. it's his work

  2571. it's his grave

  2572. and so

  2573. while the physical death

  2574. doesn't come until later

  2575. the sentence comes

  2576. and the spiritual death

  2577. comes immediately

2578. as I mentioned last week

  2579. the Garden of Eden

2580. is a type of the future temple

2581. I mentioned that to you guys

  2582. right

  2583. it represents the fullness

  2584. of God's presence

  2585. and unbroken communion

  2586. with him

2587. and that's why the cherubim

  2588. now guards the entrance

  2589. and later the cherubim

  2590. guards the Lord's temple

  2591. the inner sanctuary

  2592. as well

2593. and when Adam and Eve

  2594. then when they are

  2595. banned from the temple

  2596. of Eden

  2597. they're being banished

  2598. from the presence

  2599. of God

2600. God who is the source

  2601. of all life

  2602. and they are

  2603. banned

  2604. they're severed

  2605. from his presence

  2606. and because only

  2607. in communion with him

2608. we can have true life

  2609. eternal life

  2610. that's why Romans 5

  2611. speaks of condemnation

  2612. and separation from God

  2613. as death

  2614. that entered humanity

  2615. and an entailment

  2616. of that spiritual death

  2617. is physical death

  2618. which 1 Corinthians 15

  2619. talks about

  2620. physical death

  2621. is a symptom

  2622. of spiritual death

  2623. and all the genealogies

  2624. throughout the book

  2625. of Genesis

  2626. they're there

  2627. to bear witness

  2628. to this truth

  2629. Genesis 5.5

  2630. all the days

  2631. that Adam lived

  2632. were 930 years

  2633. and he died

  2634. Genesis 5.8

  2635. all the days

  2636. of Seth

  2637. were 912 years

  2638. and he died

  2639. Genesis 9.29

  2640. all the days

  2641. of Noah

  2642. were 950 years

  2643. and he died

  2644. everyone dies

  2645. in the book

  2646. of Genesis

  2647. Satan didn't tell

  2648. the truth

  2649. God did

  2650. so then

  2651. according to

  2652. Genesis

  2653. sin

  2654. is the main

  2655. problem of the world

  2656. that underlies

  2657. all our problems

  2658. you saw how

  2659. it alienated

  2660. humanity from God

  2661. and alienated

  2662. humanity

  2663. from themselves

  2664. one another

  2665. and it alienated

  2666. them from the rest

  2667. of creation

  2668. all creation

  2669. now he says

  2670. in Romans

  2671. is groaning

  2672. in Romans 8.22

  2673. in the pains

  2674. of childbirth

  2675. the creation

  2676. is disorder

  2677. something is amiss

  2678. about the world

  2679. and that

  2680. fearful prospect

  2681. should make a shudder

  2682. of being eternally

  2683. shut out from

  2684. God's presence

2685. the light of the world

  2686. but there is still

  2687. hope

  2688. then we turn

  2689. to the cure

  2690. for sin

  2691. verse 21

  2692. hints at this

  2693. it says

  2694. the Lord God

  2695. made for Adam

  2696. and for his wife

  2697. garments of skins

  2698. and clothed them

  2699. now I don't think

  2700. that the animal skin

  2701. is given here

  2702. to Adam and Eve

  2703. is pointing to

  2704. the sacrificial system

  2705. because there is

  2706. no mention of blood

  2707. and you don't use

  2708. the skin

  2709. in the sacrificial system

  2710. but I do see

  2711. God graciously

  2712. clothing Adam

  2713. and Eve

  2714. their shame

  2715. and their nakedness

  2716. which is a result

  2717. of sin

  2718. and I think

  2719. it foreshadows

  2720. how God

  2721. will eventually

  2722. cover all our sin

  2723. and shame

  2724. clothing was one

  2725. of the most

  2726. significant markers

  2727. of social standing

2728. in the ancient Near East

  2729. and in the Bible

  2730. in the Old Testament

  2731. especially the expression

  2732. clothed them

  2733. is used in only

  2734. two ways

  2735. the first way

  2736. is of king

  2737. clothing

  2738. his honored subjects

  2739. and secondly

  2740. it's of the priests

  2741. being clothed

  2742. in their sacred vestments

  2743. so when God

  2744. clothes Adam and Eve

  2745. here

  2746. it looks ahead

  2747. to those things

  2748. and in fact

  2749. Moses wrote

  2750. these books

  2751. himself

  2752. so he has them

  2753. in view

  2754. God's restoring

  2755. Adam and Eve

  2756. in a sense

  2757. saying

  2758. no I still have

  2759. covenant with you

  2760. I still have

  2761. relationship with you

  2762. and you are still

  2763. called to represent me

  2764. on earth

  2765. in Galatians 3

  2766. 27

  2767. later says

  2768. that we are

  2769. to put on

  2770. Christ

  2771. like a garment

  2772. his righteousness

  2773. this points

  2774. to that ultimate

  2775. reality

  2776. verses 15

  2777. and 20

  2778. point even more

  2779. clearly to Christ

  2780. verse 20

  2781. says

  2782. the man called

  2783. his wife's name

  2784. Eve

  2785. because she was

  2786. the mother

  2787. of all living

  2788. her description

  2789. as the mother

  2790. of all living

  2791. is recalls

  2792. the promise

  2793. of offspring

  2794. in Genesis 3

  2795. 15

  2796. where God

  2797. curses the serpent

  2798. and says

  2799. I will put

  2800. enmity between

  2801. you and the woman

  2802. and between

  2803. your offspring

  2804. and her offspring

  2805. he shall bruise

  2806. your head

  2807. and you shall

  2808. bruise his heel

  2809. I mentioned to you

  2810. earlier that there is

  2811. a deeper theological

  2812. sense to this verse

  2813. because the serpent

  2814. of course

  2815. is not just

  2816. an animal

  2817. but he represents

  2818. Satan

  2819. the devil

  2820. as Revelation 12

  2821. 9

  2822. describes God's

  2823. decisive victory

  2824. of Satan

  2825. and he says

  2826. that the great

  2827. dragon was thrown

  2828. down

  2829. that ancient

  2830. serpent

  2831. who is called

  2832. the devil

  2833. and Satan

  2834. the deceiver

  2835. of the whole world

  2836. he has thrown

  2837. down to the earth

  2838. and his angels

  2839. were thrown

  2840. down with him

  2841. so whether a serpent

  2842. was actually

  2843. possessed

  2844. by Satan

  2845. here

  2846. in Genesis 3

  2847. or merely

  2848. personifies

  2849. Satan

  2850. there is

  2851. satanic

  2852. influence

  2853. here

  2854. and when we

  2855. consider this

  2856. we can see

  2857. that chapter 3

  2858. verse 15

  2859. is looking

  2860. ahead to a long

  2861. struggle between

  2862. humanity

  2863. and the forces

  2864. of Satan

  2865. the fight

  2866. between humanity

  2867. and sin

  2868. and evil

  2869. and in this

  2870. pronouncement

  2871. humanity has

  2872. decisive advantage

  2873. because

  2874. serpent will

  2875. bruise

  2876. his heel

  2877. but he

  2878. will bruise

  2879. his head

  2880. and the pronoun

  2881. used is he

  2882. referring to

  2883. a son

  2884. and this

  2885. may be why

  2886. this is why

  2887. throughout Genesis

  2888. the genealogists

  2889. have a prominent

  2890. role

  2891. because Moses

  2892. is intentionally

  2893. tracing the

  2894. line of the

  2895. woman

  2896. to say that

  2897. the offspring

  2898. is going to

  2899. eventually lead

  2900. to that future

  2901. Messiah

  2902. but not only

  2903. that

  2904. we just went

  2905. through the

  2906. gospel of John

  2907. you guys

  2908. remember how

  2909. Jesus always

  2910. refers to

  2911. himself as

  2912. the son of

  2913. man

  2914. and he

  2915. awkwardly calls

  2916. his mother

  2917. woman

  2918. right

  2919. it's probably

  2920. a reference

  2921. to this

  2922. as well

  2923. right

  2924. he is the

  2925. son of

  2926. man

  2927. promised

  2928. who will

  2929. come

  2930. to bruise

  2931. the serpent's

  2932. head

  2933. so Romans

  2934. 5 summarizes

  2935. this in a

  2936. real amazing

  2937. way

  2938. he says

  2939. sin came

  2940. into the

  2941. world

  2942. through one

  2943. man

  2944. and death

  2945. through sin

  2946. and so death

  2947. spread to all

  2948. men because

  2949. all sin

  2950. and then he

  2951. says

  2952. Adam was a

  2953. type of the

  2954. one who was

  2955. to come

  2956. for if many

  2957. died through

  2958. one man's

  2959. trespass

  2960. much more

  2961. have the

  2962. grace of

  2963. God

  2964. and the

  2965. free gift

  2966. by the

  2967. grace of

  2968. that one

  2969. man

  2970. Jesus

  2971. Christ

  2972. abounded

  2973. for many

  2974. therefore as

  2975. one trespass

  2976. led to the

  2977. condemnation

  2978. for all

  2979. men

  2980. so one

  2981. act of

  2982. righteousness

  2983. leads to

  2984. justification

  2985. and life

  2986. for all

  2987. men

  2988. for as

  2989. by the

  2990. one man's

  2991. disobedience

  2992. the many

  2993. were made

  2994. sinners

  2995. so by

  2996. the one

  2997. man's

  2998. disobedience

  2999. the many

  3000. will be

  3001. made

  3002. righteous

  3003. so that

  3004. as sin

  3005. reigned

  3006. in death

  3007. grace

  3008. also might

  3009. reign

  3010. through

  3011. righteousness

  3012. leading to

  3013. eternal life

  3014. through Jesus

  3015. Christ

  3016. our Lord

  3017. Jesus

  3018. is the

  3019. second

  3020. Adam

  3021. he's the

  3022. new

  3023. and better

  3024. Adam

  3025. who fulfills

  3026. God's

  3027. intention

  3028. for humanity

  3029. he's the

  3030. one that

  3031. succeeds

  3032. where Adam

  3033. had

  3034. failed

  3035. remember

  3036. John 20

  3037. 31

  3038. we said

  3039. Jesus

  3040. is the

  3041. Christ

  3042. the

  3043. son

  3044. of

  3045. God

  3046. and by

  3047. believing

  3048. we may

  3049. have

  3050. life

  3051. in his

  3052. name

  3053. we

  3054. forfeited

  3055. our access

  3056. humanity

  3057. did

  3058. to the

  3059. tree

  3060. of life

  3061. through

  3062. sin

  3063. and

  3064. Jesus

  3065. offers

  3066. us

  3067. eternal

  3068. life

  3069. through

  3070. his

  3071. death

  3072. on a

  3073. tree

  3074. the

  3075. tree

  3076. of

  3077. the

  3078. cross

  3079. and

  3080. when

  3081. we

  3082. turn

  3083. away

  3084. from

  3085. our

  3086. sins

  3087. and

  3088. cling

  3089. to

  3090. Jesus

  3091. Christ

  3092. for

  3093. salvation

  3094. that's

  3095. when

  3096. the

  3097. spirit

  3098. of

  3099. God

  3100. indwells

  3101. and

  3102. imparts

  3103. to

  3104. us

  3105. eternal

  3106. life

  3107. and

  3108. those

  3109. who

  3110. have

  3111. the

  3112. spirit

  3113. of

  3114. God

  3115. can

  3116. be

  3117. assured

  3118. that

  3119. after

  3120. physical

  3121. death

  3122. they

  3123. will

  3124. be

  3125. raised

  3126. again

  3127. when

  3128. Christ

  3129. returns

  3130. in the

  3131. resurrection

  3132. of the

  3133. body

  3134. that's

  3135. the

  3136. hope

  3137. we

  3138. can't

  3139. solve

  3140. it

  3141. any

  3142. other

  3143. way

  3144. we

  3145. can't

  3146. make

  3147. forge

  3148. our

  3149. own

  3150. path

  3151. to

  3152. God

  3153. that

  3154. gate

  3155. that

  3156. entrance

  3157. to

  3158. Garden

  3159. of

  3160. Eden

  3161. was

  3162. forever

  3163. shut

  3164. if

  3165. you're

  3166. an

  3167. unbeliever

  3168. and

  3169. if

  3170. you

  3171. are

  3172. a

  3173. believer

  3174. the

  3175. only

  3176. way

  3177. we

  3178. can

  3179. seek

  3180. to

  3181. restore

  3182. to

  3183. reorder

  3184. the

  3185. creation

  3186. way God

  3187. intended

  3188. it to

  3189. be

  3190. only

  3191. way

  3192. God's

  3193. intention

  3194. for

  3195. creation

  3196. can

  3197. be

  3198. fulfilled

  3199. is

  3200. within

  3201. the

  3202. gracious

  3203. provision

  3204. of

  3205. God

  3206. within

  3207. the

  3208. Christ

  3209. like

  3210. love

  3211. the

  3212. community

  3213. that

  3214. he

  3215. forms

  3216. with

  3217. the

  3218. spirit

  3219. of

  3220. God

  3221. so

  3222. the

  3223. world

  3224. is

  3225. disordered

  3226. by

  3227. our

  3228. sinful

  3229. rebellion

  3230. and

  3231. we

  3232. can

  3233. reorder

  3234. our

  3235. worship

  3236. of

  3237. God

  3238. in

  3239. relationship

  3240. with

  3241. the

  3242. world

  3243. only

  3244. by

  3245. believing

  3246. in

  3247. Jesus

  3248. Christ

  3249. I

  3250. hope

  3251. that

  3252. fills

  3253. you

  3254. with

  3255. gratitude

  3256. and

  3257. love

  3258. for

  3259. our

  3260. savior

  3261. that

  3262. he

  3263. made

  3264. the

  3265. way

  3266. for

  3267. us

  3268. that

  3269. we

  3270. cannot

  3271. make

  3272. ourselves

  3273. let's

  3274. pray

  3275. together

  3276. God

  3277. we

  3278. are

  3279. profoundly

  3280. grateful

  3281. for

  3282. we

  3283. do

  3284. shudder

  3285. at the

  3286. prospect

  3287. of

  3288. being

  3289. forever

  3290. shut

  3291. out

  3292. from

  3293. your

  3294. presence

  3295. because

  3296. you

  3297. are

  3298. our

  3299. generous

  3300. father

  3301. because

  3302. you

  3303. have

  3304. been

  3305. the

  3306. giver

  3307. of

  3308. all

  3309. good

  3310. gifts

  3311. you

  3312. have

  3313. been

  3314. faithful

  3315. morning

  3316. after

  3317. morning

  3318. have

  3319. provided

  3320. all

  3321. that

  3322. we

  3323. have

  3324. ever

  3325. needed

  3326. thanks

  3327. be to

  3328. God

  3329. for

  3330. Jesus

  3331. Christ

  3332. made

  3333. a way

  3334. for

  3335. us

  3336. and

  3337. we

  3338. give

  3339. you

  3340. all

  3341. the

  3342. praise

  3343. and

  3344. glory

  3345. for

  3346. our

  3347. salvation

  3348. and

  3349. now

  3350. help

  3351. us

  3352. Lord

  3353. as

  3354. your

  3355. representatives

  3356. on

  3357. earth

  3358. as

  3359. those

  3360. who

  3361. have

  3362. been

  3363. indwelled

  3364. by

  3365. your

  3366. spirit

  3367. to

  3368. by

  3369. your

  3370. grace

  3371. live

  3372. according

  3373. to

  3374. your

  3375. will

  3376. in a

  3377. manner

  3378. that

  3379. references

  3380. you

  3381. and gives

  3382. glory

  3383. to you

  3384. at every

  3385. turn

  3386. rather than

  3387. on our

  3388. own

  3389. independently

  3390. autonomously

  3391. help us

  3392. God

  3393. in Jesus

  3394. name

  3395. we

  3396. pray

  3397. amen

  3398. stone

  3399. we

  3400. going to

  3401. membranes
