  1. Let's stand together. It's one simple verse but it's

  2. still worthy of our reverence and it's worthy of our

  3. attention. Exodus chapter 20 beginning in

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  4. verse 7. You shall not take the name of

  5. the Lord, your God in vain. For the Lord will not hold him

  6. Guiltless. Who takes his name in vain.

  7. Father, we thank you again for this word.

  8. An ending in Revelation. Blessing upon blessing.

  9. And Lord, we just ask that as we continue in the Ten Commandments

  10. you would continue to reveal to us who you are.

  11. And the blessings that come from your commands for by them, we

  12. have life. And we thank you Lord for Jesus,

  13. who fulfilled the law for us because we could not do it.

  14. But Lord. We also thank you that by the

  15. spirit, you have written them written them on our hearts.

  16. So now we long for them. So Lord, as we with your word,

  17. through your word and in your word, discover this command give

  18. us Clarity from confusion and give us willingness to obey in

  19. Jesus name. We pray, amen.

  20. You may be seated. The first two Commandments of

  21. the Ten Commandments. And as we finish these 10

  22. commandments, you're probably going to hear the same

  23. introduction following up from what we learned last week.

  24. And that's okay because it's going to stick in our brains

  25. that much more, the first two Commandments dealt specifically

  26. with the people. And their complete devotion and

  27. adoration towards God that there were to be no other God.

  28. But this God, the true and living God, the only God and

  29. that they were not to even take this God, if they have decided

  30. to worship Him and try to manipulate him or try to carve

  31. him into their own image or try to remove things of him, that

  32. they might not feel too comfortable with or add

  33. something to him that they might.

  34. Need, concerning their carnal flesh to be fulfilled. and we

  35. are motivated here to understand why these two Commandments are

  36. important because he is what Why is he giving these commands?

  37. It's in the second verse and we talked about extensively.

  38. Why did God give these first two Commandments?

  39. Because he's a jealous, God. He is jealous ferociously,

  40. jealous that he himself wants us for himself complete, adoration

  41. complete devotion, complete sacrifice unto him and him

  42. alone. And that is something that we

  43. can agree with concerning on a human level.

  44. If any of us want to be in any Covenant relationship, we want

  45. Total devotion from that spouse from that person and God wants

  46. nothing less. Now, when we come to the third

  47. commandment, we are still dealing with God's righteous

  48. passion. His fiery Zeal for total

  49. obedience to him is found in verse 1 and 2 and that passion

  50. continues and in this third commandment, but the object of

  51. his passion is not us The first two Commandments, the object of

  52. his passion is you and me, I want you.

  53. I'm jealous for you for the spirit that I've made to dwell

  54. in you. You're mine.

  55. We should be stirred by that but the third commandment, he has a,

  56. he has a righteous deal but it's not for us necessarily and we

  57. can Rejoice that God gives us commands.

  58. And God gives us instructions because he loves us, but there's

  59. something else that motivates God.

  60. What is it? Read it right there.

  61. You shall not take the name of the Lord.

  62. What is he zealous for? What is he jealous for?

  63. What is he passionate about his name?

  64. His name and though he is yes again motivated by love to

  65. sacrifice and to show long-suffering and to even

  66. demonstrate his power. Isn't it wonderful that when you

  67. read Jesus performing Miracles? Oftentimes, it's coupled with

  68. the Revelation that he is compassionate that he did his

  69. miracles because he was a compassionate, he is a

  70. compassionate God but we can never imbalance that Truth by

  71. removing the understanding that he's also jealous for his glory.

  72. So you kind of have these two ideas, concerning how God

  73. relates to, man, you have those that say it's all about his

  74. love, he loves us, he died for us because he loves us.

  75. That's true. But they don't, they don't talk

  76. about the fact that he also wants to glorify himself.

  77. Then you have the other side that's all about God's glory.

  78. Jesus died for his glory. Jesus did this for his glory?

  79. Jesus. All these things she saves for

  80. his glory. He heals for his glory and then

  81. they don't really talk about the love.

  82. Can we just marry the two and just be balanced?

  83. he loves us and he is jealous for us, but he also is jealous

  84. for his name and this commandment has to do exactly

  85. with that name, his name and so, he speaking to those who are

  86. familiar with his name, and what is he trying to say here is

  87. trying to say this, I want you to be careful how you handle my

  88. name. Because based on how you handle

  89. my name will determine how I will receive glory honor and

  90. recognition. How we as his people treat this

  91. name will determine to some degree how God through us will

  92. receive glory to his name. And so we have to really take he

  93. to this, but we're going to realize, I believe more than

  94. anything how God really values his name.

  95. It's probably going to shock us. The extent that God goes to to

  96. make sure that his name is protected concerning its

  97. reputation. So what does he do?

  98. He gives us different titles of his name.

  99. He reveals himself early on an exodus as I am.

  100. I am who I am and the beauty about all of his titles.

  101. And all of these things that he relates to himself is ultimately

  102. a reflection of his character. We have to remember that even

  103. names given to certain Saints in the scriptures and certain

  104. people as we know are given because it reveals something

  105. about either that person's character or that person's

  106. Destiny and it's so much more true for God that his name.

  107. Why? Because when we mention his

  108. name, and when we speak of his name, we would be reminded of a

  109. certain attribute. We would be reminded just by the

  110. mention of his name. We would know that he is Holy

  111. that he has powerful, that he is loving that he is gracious and

  112. forgiving now, if that name is associated with anything, other

  113. than who he truly is, it becomes an assault to his character.

  114. None of us in here would like our name associated. to a

  115. certain circumstance or situation, or even a person,

  116. That is not living righteously or that is not acting.

  117. Holy or a situation that is not honorable.

  118. None of us want to be associate and we have the right to be

  119. frustrated. If somebody does bring our name

  120. into something that it should not be brought into how much

  121. more God, how much more God. And so this commandment has

  122. everything to do with that. Let me read this verse you in

  123. Exodus 916, he says this early on But for this purpose, he's

  124. talking about raising up Pharaoh.

  125. But for this purpose, I've raised you up to show you my

  126. power. Why so?

  127. That my name may be proclaimed in all the Earth.

  128. I want my name to be known throughout the entire world and

  129. I want my name to carry such a reputation that when they hear

  130. my name, they would know my axe. That At The Mention Of My Name,

  131. they would know that I am the god that delivered my people out

  132. of Egypt that split the Red Sea that destroyed all the false

  133. gods of pharaoh and all of his Nation.

  134. Psalms 111 verse 9. This is powerful.

    Psalms 111:9

  135. He sent Redemption to his people.

  136. He has commanded his Covenant forever.

  137. Holy and awesome is his name. Holy and awesome is his name.

  138. So if we really want to get to the center reason for this

  139. command, it's for this. He wants to instill in the minds

  140. of his people. And understanding of his name in

  141. such a way, pay attention that we would be careful how to use

  142. it in our verbal activity. and, We would Revere it when it is

  143. mentioned amongst us. Let me say that again, God

  144. through this command wants to instill in his people.

  145. Such an understanding of his name that we would be careful of

  146. how to use it in our verbal activity and we would Revere him

  147. when it is even mentioned by a whisper This is what he's trying

  148. to do. He says, don't don't take my

  149. name in vain which now we open up to one another.

  150. What does it mean to take God's name in vain?

  151. So songs about like you said, associated with anything that

  152. isn't glorifying him. But at the same time, if you, if

  153. you call yourself, for example, question ourselves, Christian,

  154. we should walk a life that honors God, the same for them,

  155. and they associate themselves with God, they should have to

  156. walk the life that God intends for them.

  157. Or else that through actions taking his name is Randy.

  158. Vein it's smearing his name so we're not just strictly talking

  159. about some lip service here are we is God taking God's name in

  160. vain strictly restricted to how we speak of him or how we live

  161. how we live. And we're going to see that more

  162. than anything. Yes.

  163. So we represent his name. So, how I live must be in line

  164. with the person and the God that I represent.

  165. What are the things involve taking God's name in vain?

  166. Associating things that are not glorifying him.

  167. Absolutely. Yeah.

  168. Using lord's name to push an agenda.

  169. That's not a. Oh yeah.

  170. We see that a lot. Unfortunately, today I'm going

  171. to talk about in a moment to taking his name for the purpose

  172. of advancing an agenda. Yeah.

  173. Oh, we'll get into it, we'll see ya.

  174. We're going to discover in a moment.

  175. Yes, this character that kind of things like so dragging his name

  176. in the dirt, to even associate him or to even say something in

  177. the same sentence that does not honor or glorify who he is.

  178. Absolutely. And that's kind of the common

  179. way. We understand taking God's name

  180. in vain, is that we put his name or we replace his name with

  181. something that is Not wholly, sure.

  182. Any other way we can take God's name in vain.

  183. This is important. So we said some surprisingly,

  184. because people have this narrow view of taking God's name.

  185. In vain is saying that three-letter word phrase when

  186. you receive bad news, or when you're surprised or when you get

  187. startled by something, it's deeper than that.

  188. Yeah, swearing. That's as simple as that when we

  189. use his name as a cuss word, that's the common view.

  190. Absolutely. We shouldn't neglect that

  191. though. That is the main way, there are

  192. many ways. Yes, The way we live

  193. associating, his name to what is not wholly.

  194. Not glorifying his name, cussing, and swearing

  195. absolutely. Advancing a genda.

  196. Yes. Well it would help us to look

  197. into what the word vain means. The Hebrew word for vein is shot

  198. of the root word is she've. And in this sense, it has three

  199. main words that are associated with it.

  200. One of them is worthlessness worthlessness, the other is

  201. false sness rockets sness, and valueless So when we're talking

  202. about something being in vain, it's something that is false is

  203. associated with something that is false, It's associated.

  204. Something that is worthless and valueless, and in the root word,

  205. it even has this idea of Destruction destruction.

  206. So when we look at the original language, God is saying and we

  207. can we can look at it, different ways.

  208. Don't use my name in such a way where you destroy it.

  209. Or don't use my name in such a way that I am related to

  210. something that is false. Don't use my name in a way that

  211. makes it worthless. Don't be so casual with my name.

  212. But it's almost lost its value. And so it has to do with all

  213. these things. And so if we were to kind of

  214. rephrase this command, we can make it as simple as this.

  215. You shall not address God's name casually or represent it

  216. falsely. You shall not address God,

  217. casually or represent it falsely.

  218. Remember that? And this is what he's saying.

  219. It's beyond using my name in the same sentence as a cuss word,

  220. though. That is part of it.

  221. And so I want us to talk about the different ways in which we

  222. can take God's name in vain. Number one, in our speech.

  223. And there's subcategories with that in our speech.

  224. The first way that somebody can take God's name in vain is how

  225. we address his name. How one addresses the name that

  226. is above every other name? What did Jesus say when he

  227. taught his people? How to pray?

  228. When you pray, what does he say? Anybody know the Lord's Prayer?

  229. Pray. Then like this, don't pray this

  230. you can pray it, but we have a whole system now that's built

  231. upon repetition and vain ritualistic addressing to God.

  232. No, pray then like this take the elements of this prayer and

  233. apply it to your own prayer. Life, what is it?

  234. What's the first thing that he says, father?

  235. Who art in heaven, Hallowed? Be Your Name.

  236. Hmm. How low would be your name?

  237. What does that mean? Sacred.

  238. Yes. Glory.

  239. Yes. But what's the address being?

  240. What is it? What is it?

  241. What are we saying? When we say Hallowed be your

  242. name? Holiness to your name.

  243. Yes. Glorifying your name, set apart.

  244. Yes, that's the main part being set apart.

  245. So it's addressing God in this way.

  246. Your name is like no other name. You are lovely.

  247. You Are Holy, you are beyond my understanding, you are great,

  248. and greatly to be praised. And so what Jesus is even

  249. telling us as Believers, how to address God is that we should

  250. address him in such a way. That you would not address

  251. somebody else. How you address?

  252. Someone reveals a lot of how you respect them.

  253. Isn't that true? How you address an individual

  254. reveals much about how you respect them?

  255. Now, no matter what your opinion is of the president, the

  256. president came here to give a speech.

  257. I don't know why you would but if you came here to give a

  258. speech and there was an open Q&A, I don't think well this day

  259. and age, probably nobody would be bold enough to say hey Donald

  260. Or ADT. if you've ever been in court, You know what you have to

  261. say to the judge when you want to address the judge your honor.

  262. Why? Because there are certain people

  263. who have been given a level of authority and their position

  264. carries power and that alone deserves our respect.

  265. There are certain people who have been given Authority and a

  266. position of power and that alone causes us to address them in a

  267. way knowing that they can exercise that Authority.

  268. Now, how much more for the name that is above every other name?

  269. How much more? Are we to address the Holy One?

  270. The one again, who has been given the name above every other

  271. name. You know, what means that he has

  272. authority over all authorities and all the powers of this world

  273. combined. Cannot even come close to the

  274. power that comes from his breath alone.

  275. And this is the one that you and I have access to pray to Which

  276. is amazing because there's a mingling of two realities.

  277. There's this understanding of him being father, but then I

  278. still in the same breath have to say Halloween, be your name.

  279. How do you reconcile that? That's an important question.

  280. How do you and I reconcile the fact that he is father but he's

  281. also King of the universe. How do you reconcile in your

  282. prayer life? How do you understand that in

  283. your walk with the Lord? That he is father.

  284. But he's also King hope so. Yeah, absolutely.

  285. So the same thing you would honor your father so you honor

  286. the Lord and have beer of your father, as well.

  287. I would be something along those lines.

  288. Sure. And I think that's becoming

  289. increasingly difficult because we have a lot of this generation

  290. that is even how to respect our own parents.

  291. That don't even know how to address their own parents.

  292. And if you can't address people that you can see respectfully.

  293. How are you going to address someone?

  294. You can't see respectfully. Sure.

  295. How do you reconcile father? And that if you were to even

  296. meditate upon his Holiness, you would, you would realize that

  297. the ground is not low enough for you to lay prostrate on.

  298. How would you explain it to somebody who comes up to me,

  299. says, you believe, God is like your father, right?

  300. Sure. But you also believe that he's

  301. the god of the entire universe, right?

  302. Sure. How do you reconcile that And I

  303. believe one way to reconcile that, at least in my own mind,

  304. is that when I do understand him as father, the place for me to

  305. come to into revering, him is understanding how I became a

  306. son. When I realized that he's not

  307. just automatically my father, the world is not God's children.

  308. That is a right given to those who believe on his son.

  309. So, when I come to the place of understanding that God is

  310. father. I must also in that same thought

  311. realize that that's not something that came about

  312. automatically and there is something done for me to become

  313. his son and when I realized that that transaction of identity has

  314. come through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that the same one

  315. that I call, Father is the same one that poured out his wrath

  316. upon the son. And on the cross allow them to

  317. experience a pain that is beyond anything that we can even

  318. comprehend for me to be adopted as a son.

  319. In that same thought you will feel the weight of his holiness.

  320. You will and you will realize that though he is Father for him

  321. as king to bring you to that place of having relationship

  322. with him is an astounding thing. That he is just he is Holy, he's

  323. all these things yet. I can still call him father, and

  324. it brings you into that balance of understanding.

  325. How, yes he is King, but he deserves my reverence.

  326. And so that's the beauty of it. How we address him.

  327. And you've heard me say this before, but it's worth

  328. mentioning again. There is, there is a casualty

  329. Towards God in. Even the way we address him.

  330. I remember when I was first saved and we were doing these

  331. group little things where we would come and just have group

  332. discussions after the church service.

  333. And I would hear this is just freshly saved.

  334. I would hear the way. People would address God.

  335. And just, just a new, as a new believer, I would say that just

  336. doesn't sound right. it just doesn't seem appropriate to say

  337. these words or to be so casual, And as you grow in your

  338. knowledge of God, you will realize that.

  339. And if you really meditate upon who he is, even in your prayers,

  340. you will be careful with how you address him.

  341. Even behind pulpits. One thing to observe is to see

  342. how that individual addresses God.

  343. And oftentimes, you see a very flippant cool, relaxed Jesus.

  344. Yet that person does not even realize that that sermon that

  345. they prepared will be brought up at the Judgment seat of Christ

  346. and they will be judged for what they just preached that day.

  347. And so we have to have this understanding of addressing him

  348. rightly Jesus even said, when you pray, say how holy his name

  349. is sanctify his name even in the way you address him.

  350. We do not take the lord's name in vain.

  351. By dressing him wrongly. Not just by how we address him,

  352. but how we apply his name. The first one is how we address

  353. his name the second way in, which one can take the lord's

  354. name in. Vain is how we apply his name.

  355. Leviticus, 19 12 says this. You shall not swear by my name.

  356. Falsely and so profane, the name of your God.

  357. I'm the Lord. You shall not swear by my name

  358. falsely. Now, what does that mean?

  359. Don't take it, don't take an old by God's name.

  360. Is that all it means that's part big.

  361. Part of it. Absolutely.

  362. If you make a promise in both the Lord is like y'all didn't

  363. answer. I need his name.

  364. I promise you this and you don't keep it.

  365. Don't do that. Could you what is it exactly

  366. what he's saying there in your attempt to validate your

  367. statement to be true. When in fact you yourself know

  368. what's false and you bring in the name of God to that

  369. statement, you just took in his name in vain And so when

  370. somebody says, oh I swear to that, I will do this.

  371. And I promise to that, I will perform this and you and your

  372. mind know that you will not. You are associating, God's name

  373. to something like deception and a lie and he wants no part of it

  374. because he's holy And so, he says, don't swear by my name

  375. falsely. I want nothing to do with

  376. falsehood. I want nothing to do with

  377. deception. I want nothing to do with lies.

  378. Keep me out of it. And Jesus Takes it up a notch.

  379. He takes it up a notch. This he not.

  380. Where does he do that? Does anybody know Matthew 5.

  381. Matthew 5 34 to 35. What does he say?

  382. But I say to you, do not take an oath at all.

  383. Why would tells us what we're not supposed to associate with

  384. an oath by heaven for it is the Throne of God.

  385. Or in other words, it's where God dwells Or on Earth for it.

  386. Is his footstool Or by Jerusalem for is the city of the great

  387. king. And then he goes on to say just

  388. let your yes, be yes. And your no be no.

  389. We have to understand this because what Jesus is saying,

  390. here to Believers is absolutely brilliant.

  391. So he's saying here, hey, don't even taken off at all.

  392. Don't try to swear by this or swear by that or swear even on

  393. your own head. Don't But just let your yes.

  394. Be yes. And your no be no.

  395. What is he trying to say? Because it's challenging.

  396. Yes, your bingo. The Lord wants to develop

  397. Believers. That are so honest in their

  398. character and are so consistent in their commitment that when

  399. you just say yes, it's a done deal, it's gonna happen.

  400. And when you say, no, it's no. And what he's trying to say is I

  401. don't want you to try to enhance the truthfulness of your

  402. statement by trying to bring my name into it or you swearing by

  403. something. I want you to be such an honest

  404. person, I want you to be such a woman of your word.

  405. Such a man of your word that when you say you're gonna do

  406. something the person that you said, yes to will not even

  407. question it. Oh, how convicting is that?

  408. Are you a person that if you say yes to something that person can

  409. guarantee he'll do it? Or if that person says no, can

  410. you trust that person? And maybe, you know, somebody

  411. that said yes, to something so many times that if you were to

  412. ask him again, you know, there's a question mark even when you

  413. ask them, hey, are you going to do this?

  414. Yeah. And in your mind, you like,

  415. you're not going to do it. You said, what's a modern way of

  416. looking at it? Well, here's a modern way of

  417. looking at it. Hey, can you do this?

  418. I'll pray about it. And, you know, the person who

  419. just said that, you know that the answer is no.

  420. Yeah, I'll pray about it. And maybe you are going to pray

  421. about it. If that's the case, I'm pray

  422. about it. But if you know in your answer

  423. as that person is saying something to you, you're like

  424. I'll pray about it when the answer is no just say no just be

  425. a man of your word and say I can't I can't.

  426. I love the story about Nathaniel.

  427. That short little story because when he when he encounters,

  428. Jesus, Jesus says something about him, what does he say?

  429. A man in whom there is no deceit.

  430. He was so truthful in his statements, he's at what good

  431. can come out of Nazareth. and so, what you hear is, what you

  432. get Now, don't confuse that with rudeness.

  433. Don't confuse boldness with rudeness.

  434. There's a difference. But there's something about a

  435. heart in which when they say something you know that they're

  436. honest in their statement that there's no fogginess, there's no

  437. Hayes. You're like I don't know, it's

  438. just plain truth and Jesus wants to produce that in his

  439. disciples. He said don't try to be somebody

  440. that says okay I'm going to make this statement more weighty by

  441. associating God's name with it. I'm just going to be a person

  442. that so consistent when I say something people will believe

  443. me. And so how we apply his name.

  444. Now, there are certain circumstances, especially you're

  445. going to hear this and you're going to read through the

  446. Epistles and you're going to see moments or even Paul takes an

  447. oath. There are certain circumstances

  448. and that's beyond the, the teaching.

  449. Now, even in this life, you might have to take an oath in

  450. some circumstances. That's different.

  451. There's a sense here where Jesus saying, don't be flippant and

  452. loose and voluntary would just making Oaths as a habit or

  453. because you want to try to prove your statement to be more true

  454. just being This person build such a reputation that people

  455. will take you for what you say. Just feel the weight of

  456. conviction. Just how powerful our words are

  457. and how jesus takes him. So seriously, Not only how we

  458. apply his name to our statements, to our promises.

  459. But how we speak on behalf of his name.

  460. So we talked about how we address his name, we talked

  461. about how we apply his name. Now it's how we speak on behalf

  462. of his name. Let me read this text from

  463. Jeremiah, you don't return. There was just read it.

  464. He's talking about the false prophets and he says, this and

  465. Jeremiah 20:7 15. I have not sent them declares

    Jeremiah 20:7

  466. the Lord, I have not sent them. But they are prophesying falsely

  467. in my name. The famous.

  468. Three-letter phrase that you here.

  469. I hope not too often, especially if it's not true.

  470. God told me fill in the blank. and there are some people that

  471. say that so frequently, For whatever reason, there are some

  472. people who say certain things and they just want to say, God

  473. told them so that they can just sound more spiritual.

  474. It's like this in. That's not that deep of a

  475. revelation, it's pretty plain but it just because I want to be

  476. more spiritual you know. The Lord told me this really And

  477. to a more serious level, their people.

  478. Who because they want to advance an agenda.

  479. We'll bring in the name of the Lord.

  480. To affect the naive. you know what it says in Romans about

  481. false teachers and says that they affect the naive, it's the

  482. naive that buy into false teaching And you might be

  483. thinking really this stuff happens.

  484. I remember when somebody came up to me, I don't know why they did

  485. this. Maybe they were just trying to

  486. test it who subscribe to a certain person's Ministry.

  487. And they would get newsletters and different things, but this

  488. was like a text message thing and this person showed me a text

  489. message of this man of God. Who said the angel of the Lord,

  490. and the text message, I read it for myself.

  491. The angel of the Lord appeared to me and gave me instructions

  492. for you. Send via text or through PayPal

  493. $50 for me to reveal what the angel of the Lord revealed to

  494. you, you believe that? You and I are sighing and we're

  495. laughing. But here's the thing, people

  496. actually buy into it or else those things wouldn't last and

  497. those people wouldn't be living in those kind of mansions and

  498. driving those kind of cars because people don't read their

  499. Bibles. And don't have it under stairs.

  500. So moved by emotion there. So moved by the supernatural.

  501. That anything that comes they're willing to buy into it because

  502. they do not have the filter of the scriptures before them.

  503. You've heard me say this before and I will say it again.

  504. You can come to such a place in your understanding and the

  505. handling of the sword of the spirit that even if you were to

  506. hear a sermon and you hear some statement being made, you can

  507. recognize when it's true or false because your your mind is

  508. saturated. With the truth.

  509. Where an alarm goes off because you know, the scripture when

  510. somebody declare something contrary to the scripture or

  511. somebody delivers the scriptures, even in an unworthy

  512. manner, you can detect it because you have the wisdom of

  513. God. I fear terribly for those who

  514. casually used God's name to advance a message, or their

  515. Ministry, or the reputation. And I would love to unpack this

  516. more concerning. What do we do with somebody?

  517. Who says, you know, I feel like the Lord is prompted something

  518. on my heart but listen, even if if you if you have that where

  519. the Lord puts something on your heart and you sense that and you

  520. pray about and you seek wisdom on it, we always have to once

  521. again, approach it with caution. Always with caution.

  522. Because what can happen is and what has happened is there a lot

  523. of people who are experiencing this even now that because

  524. somebody has been so flippant with this, God told me and

  525. whatever they told them happens not to be true or happens to be

  526. something that's false effects that person.

  527. To a level that you. And I can't even imagine.

  528. And there are people who have been haunted by years by

  529. statement, being made by somebody who was so arrogant

  530. enough to not even say something in a way where they approach it

  531. with humility. And say, you know, I've been

  532. praying for you and I don't know if this is, this is the Lord or

  533. what, just take this and just bring it before the Lord, but

  534. come with such arrogance because they want to seem bold and they

  535. want to seem profit like and they damaged people.

  536. And they walk with the sense of being haunted by something that

  537. they don't even know if it's true or not.

  538. And so there has to be. Caution around his name and

  539. ultimately more than anything though.

  540. People might be damaged by it and people can be greatly

  541. edified by. Like I said, I want to unpack

  542. this too much. I'm trying to restrain myself.

  543. But ultimately God's name. God's name is involved with

  544. that. The last thing anybody should

  545. want is somebody to be turned off by God because of how

  546. Loosely we use his name. how we address his name, how we apply

  547. his name and how we speak on behalf of his name is crucial to

  548. understanding this third commandment Is there any other

  549. way we can do this? There's an example of this in

  550. scripture being played out and it's tucked in a book that you

  551. wouldn't think is in there and automatically, everybody knows

  552. what book were talking about. It's in First Kings First Kings.

  553. Okay maybe there's something. I don't know about go ahead.

  554. What is it? Where the prophet of God went

  555. and condemned jeroboam and God told him to stay it like don't

  556. eat or drink in Israel and another Prophet came and said

  557. I'm also a prophet of God but you know what?

  558. Listen to me and lie here and rest and when he came out, got

  559. sent a lion too. Devour that profit.

  560. Yeah, that's it. That's First Kings 13, I

  561. believe. And that's a tricky tricky tax

  562. concerning this Prophet that was sent by God and he was told to

  563. not, go back the way he was, he came in and to not stop.

  564. He was supposed to just give his message and go back and then

  565. somebody comes in and tells him otherwise and he believed that

  566. man's word rather than his understanding what God spoke to

  567. me, and it's a whole mess. And that is that is an example.

  568. We can explore the one I had in mind is actually found in the

  569. Book of Leviticus. 24:10 let's turned it together.

    Leviticus 24:10

  570. Leviticus chapter 24. Verse 10.

    Leviticus 24 chapter mention

  571. Now, an Israelite woman's son, whose father was an Egyptian

  572. Went Out Among the people of Israel.

  573. And the Israelite woman son and a man of Israel fought in the

  574. camp verse 11 and the Israelite woman son, blasphemed the name

  575. and cursed, then they brought him to Moses.

  576. His mother's name was Sheila met.

  577. The daughter of debris of the tribe of Dan and they put him in

  578. custody to the will of the Lord should be.

  579. Your to them, then the Lord spoke to Moses saying, bring out

  580. of the camp, the one who cursed and let all who heard him lay

  581. their hands on his head and let all the congregation Stone him.

  582. Wow. And speak to the people of

  583. Israel saying, whoever curses his God shall bear his sin.

  584. Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to

  585. death. All the congregation shall Stone

  586. him. The Sojourner, as well as the

  587. native. When he blasphemes the name.

  588. He should be put to death. Don't lift up your hand.

  589. Don't respond. How many of us in here,

  590. honestly? Feel Comfort uncomfortable with

  591. that story. How many of us just read that

  592. right now and your thoughts went automatically automatically to

  593. this question. That's a little bit extreme,

  594. isn't it? That's a little bit.

  595. Over-the-top wouldn't you think? But I want to challenge you with

  596. this thought. That we are so saturated in a

  597. culture of Dishonor. We are so surrounded by people

  598. who speak with such vulgarity. And blasphemy in our music in

  599. our movies and our conversations, you can do, you

  600. can be, you can be sitting, I was just in the barbershop just

  601. sitting beside somebody just hearing it was on the phone,

  602. just hearing the vulgarity coming.

  603. Just it just everywhere to the point where we become so

  604. normalized, and it becomes, so, Part of our day that when God

  605. brings the seriousness of taking his name in vain to this story.

  606. All of us are shocked. You know, you understand what

  607. I'm trying to say, God has a different perspective on his

  608. name than most people do today. And because even the people of

  609. God can be subconsciously trained to understand the

  610. normality of cursing and taking his name.

  611. So lightly, when we come to the scriptures and see what God

  612. demands of us, it's almost offensive to us.

  613. It's almost offensive to us. That's not just true for the

  614. third commandment. That's true of any sin here.

  615. Here's evidence for it right now.

  616. Homosexuality is a sin. The Bible declares that

  617. homosexuality is an unnatural desire.

  618. Now, as I'm saying that right now, what's going on in your

  619. heart? Because even among the people of

  620. God, if you were to address a sin, what the scriptures

  621. revealed to be sin. An alarm goes off.

  622. There's a set where you perk up and you go, did he just say

  623. that? Did he just say that?

  624. So bluntly, did he just say that?

  625. Just like that, he should have came in a lot softer than when

  626. he just said? Do you understand what I'm

  627. saying? When the Bible is so clear about

  628. it. And I know there needs to be a

  629. wisdom and there needs to be an understanding of how to address

  630. these things in love. But what I'm trying to say is,

  631. we are trying to remove even the sting of sin because we are

  632. being affected by our culture. So we pillow, even the preaching

  633. of God's word to make sure that nobody's stirred and at nobody's

  634. uncomfortable. When the very poor Commission of

  635. the gospel and of sin is supposed to make you feel

  636. uncomfortable. To bring you to a place of

  637. realizing that God has a different standard and here's a

  638. disservice that we do when we try to remove what God wants to

  639. say. So clearly we bring people to a

  640. place where they think, well, it's not that big of a deal.

  641. It's not that big of a deal. So if the preacher who

  642. represents God doesn't make it a big deal, then maybe it's not

  643. that big of a deal my life. I remember, Sitting in a room

  644. with leaders in a Q&A. And they were interviewing

  645. younger pastors. That were just ordained to be

  646. pastors. And they were giving these

  647. younger people questions, concerning our culture and

  648. everything else. On one of the questions is, how

  649. do we address this problem of homosexuality and the moderator?

  650. As we were discussing, as people were, they were going back and

  651. forth, he wouldn't even call it a sin.

  652. That when it came to addressing it was, there was so much

  653. hesitation, so it was replaced with an unhealthy way of living.

  654. And not the way God designed it. And guess what?

  655. That's because we've allowed our minds to be saturated with what

  656. the culture says, rather than what the word of God says.

  657. I am not an advocate for bashing people, even in their sin

  658. because Jesus didn't do that. Nevertheless, we are not to take

  659. on the perspective of the world concerning sin.

  660. We are to take on what God says about Sin.

  661. So we come to something like this and we go, that's a little

  662. bit extreme. And you know what?

  663. That's okay. I'm not saying it's a sin to

  664. think that But let's understand why this is happening.

  665. Notice with me here, that this is in the Book of Leviticus.

  666. This is something concerning the instructions given to the

  667. people. At the birthing stage of a

  668. Nation. This is not something down the

  669. road. This is in the developmental

  670. stage of them growing as a people.

  671. And God does it in more than one way where he makes it abundantly

  672. clear of what he's expecting from his people.

  673. And we see here that this person blasphemes God, like directly.

  674. So in this fight, with this other Israelite there seems to

  675. be an altercation and this man apparently wants to get at this

  676. person by cursing, his God And there seems to be that in that

  677. truth because his father was an Egyptian, he was part of that

  678. mixed multitude that came up. So maybe his father was in a

  679. Believer and and Yahweh or maybe his father had that practice and

  680. that just affected him as a child.

  681. No matter what angle you look at it.

  682. He tries to curse the name of God and when he does curse, the

  683. name of God, God puts his foot down.

  684. Why? Isn't phraseology.

  685. So easy to mimic. That terms and slangs and words

  686. can so be contagious within a short.

  687. You know, somebody comes in here and they say statement and it

  688. can just spread like wildfire no.

  689. Right? And some of us can give examples

  690. of that or maybe you hang around with somebody so long and you

  691. appreciate that person, subconsciously, you just begin

  692. to develop their phraseology, you began talking like them and

  693. maneuvering like them. Okay, this is what God's doing.

  694. I'm not going to let this person infect the rest.

  695. I'm not gonna let this individual curse my name and so

  696. make that a common thing amongst the others and it become a

  697. habitual normal thing, like it is today and so I'm going to

  698. make a statement. My name is Holy, My name is

  699. Holy. And I'm not going to develop a

  700. people and raise a people that will when they're frustrated

  701. curse. My name like it's nothing.

  702. And so, he makes this bold example, out of this man.

  703. Which I find so fascinating, because you don't even know his

  704. name. look at it with dresses and is interested in how The

  705. Israelite woman's son. The Israelite woman, son, the

  706. Israelite woman's son. Why?

  707. Because if you're not going to honor God's name, God won't even

  708. recognize yours. That's what I believe is

  709. happening, right there. Does he want to give him the

  710. name and wants to just show? My name must be revered.

  711. Because when you assault my name you assault my character, you

  712. assault my reputation. For there is no other name.

  713. Given among men under Heaven given among men by which we must

  714. be saved. It is the access through the

  715. name of Jesus that we can come to God In Prayer.

  716. The name of the Lord is a strong tower, right?

  717. Is it? No wonder that.

  718. Satan the prince of the power of the air has made the name of

  719. Jesus. Presented with such blasphemy

  720. filth and Venom. So that when that name is

  721. presented and when that name is heard, it would be defiled

  722. because it's associated with so much junk in this world.

  723. Do you see that Satan is is literally attempting to assault

  724. his name so that when you hear his name you wouldn't think

  725. about the power that he has. You want to think about his

  726. salvation, you want to think about his goodness, it would

  727. just be something that you expressed some frustration.

  728. It would be something that you say, because you Just express

  729. yourself that way, becomes something.

  730. Casual The devil knows what can happen when people understand

  731. the name of Jesus rightly. So he wants to try to Mar it,

  732. drag it in the dirt defile, it and God is fighting for the

  733. glory of his name. and we, as people have to honor that He

  734. says, here through this. It's not a light thing, but we

  735. talked up to this point and we're almost done here.

  736. We talked up to this point about how the lord's name in vain is

  737. something that's done through speech.

  738. But we have to understand. That you and I could be a people

  739. that are squeaky clean and not taking the lord's name in vain

  740. that we don't address it falsely that we address it with

  741. Holiness, all those things. And all of those things can be

  742. absolutely pointless and Effectiveness based on another

  743. thing. And what's that?

  744. The way we live The way we live. I'm going to read something to

  745. you in Romans, Chapter 2. You can turn there if you want.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  746. Romans chapter 2 verse 21, While You Preach against stealing,

    Romans 2:21

  747. the, you steal is talking to the Jews.

  748. You, who say that? One, must not commit adultery.

  749. Do you commit adultery? YooHoo abour.

  750. Hide Idols do you rub temples you who boast in the law

  751. dishonor, God by breaking the law for, as it is written, the

  752. name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles, because of you.

  753. Right there. He's addressing the Jews for

  754. living as hypocrites. And they're hypocritical living

  755. is bringing blasphemy to God's name to the onlookers of

  756. supposedly. The people of God, he's saying

  757. you Jews are saying how your righteous and you have a law and

  758. you're not living according to law and the Gentiles around are

  759. looking in and they're saying, wait a minute but you're living

  760. contrary to what you're preaching.

  761. And look at this, we think that This only affects us know, God's

  762. name is violated in that. Do you see the depths of the

  763. dangers of hypocrisy? No wonder.

  764. Jesus came on the scene and the harshest Tony had was concerning

  765. hypocrites. Not towards the prostitute.

  766. Not towards the adulterer, not towards the tax collector.

  767. The ones that had this portrayal of righteousness and Jesus says,

  768. listen, you're Hypocrites, you have greed in.

  769. You you're filled with dead men's bones, you clean the

  770. outside of the cup. But inside the cup, it's filthy,

  771. you take God's word and you were Masters at twisting it for your

  772. own gain. You don't honor your parents.

  773. You say that you're taking this money for the temple when you

  774. have to honor your parents and providing for them in there.

  775. Old age and he addresses these things through and through and

  776. it's no different for us. The any inconsistency in our

  777. lives, because we represent the name of Jesus Christ, anything

  778. in our lives. That's inconsistent with his

  779. character or his lordship over. Our lives is an extension and a

  780. very weighty way of taking the lord's name in vain And so, it's

  781. beyond the tongue. It's in our character.

  782. It's in our responses is in the way we just live.

  783. If you have the King James version, this is a great

  784. Advantage. But even in different

  785. translations, that has the same understanding, Proverbs Chapter

    Proverbs 30:8

  786. 30 verse 8, Paul, can you read verse 8, 2 verse 9?

  787. Please give me neither poverty, nor riches feed me with food,

  788. convenient? For me lest I be full of denied.

  789. Me and say, who is the Lord, unless I've imported steel and

  790. take the name of my God. Dang.

  791. So we know this wonderful prayer.

  792. We're agar says, what he goes. Lord, I'm going to pray this

  793. way. I'm not going to pray that I

  794. would be Filthy Rich, so that I would just abandon you and my

  795. walk with you because I'm just becoming so materialistic and

  796. driven by the things of this world.

  797. But Lord, I'm praying that I would not even be poor as well.

  798. Why less? I in my poverty begin to steal

  799. and when I steal bring your name in vain And he is fee is says,

  800. or profane your name? It's not based on what he's

  801. saying, is based on how he's living Based on his dishonesty

  802. based on the secret, the secrecy of his life of taking something

  803. that does not belong to him. And all that is an assault to

  804. the person that we represent. so he says here that it goes beyond

  805. speech, it goes into the way, we deal with one another, the way,

  806. the deal with finances, the way we deal with situations and

  807. circumstances that in it all, take this to your heart in it,

  808. all God's reputation is being demonstrated through your life

  809. and so it's this constant awareness by the power of the

  810. Holy Spirit. And through the meditation of

  811. his word day and night that I would realize that I'm not

  812. representing myself, but I've been bought with a price.

  813. I've been bought with a price and so in all my dealings,

  814. ultimately the name of God, the name of my savior.

  815. It's written on my forehead. and when people see in me,

  816. ultimately Testify the one I serve, now, It's understandable.

  817. Yes, we make mistakes and all those things, but this is for

  818. the ones that feel like they can live in hypocrisy and I God will

  819. not hold him Guiltless. He will And this is why God is

  820. once again hammering in the New Testament against this idea of

  821. living one way professing to know God Titus 1:16 by denying

    Titus 1:16

  822. them by their works, it can't it can't work.

  823. Does anybody know the root word for hypocrite?

  824. That's good acting, right? Yes.

  825. Well, it's it has to do with acting.

  826. Yes. So, in ancient times when it

  827. came to acting, resources were not like what we have today.

  828. And so what would people do an actor would come up?

  829. And he would take a mask and we place it on his face and he

  830. would act as a certain character.

  831. But once again, because of resources or even just because

  832. of the genre, the play that person would take off the mask

  833. put on a another mask. And play as another character.

  834. That's where that word comes from.

  835. That's exactly what hypocrisy is.

  836. It's displaying you yourself one way but in a moment you can

  837. switch and become something else.

  838. All it takes is you stepping into work.

  839. Your somebody else all. It takes you stepping into

  840. church or someone else. All it takes is you stepping

  841. into home and who you were in church?

  842. Hallelujah. Praise God.

  843. Arms High. Preying on your knees weeping

  844. and prayer. You step into home.

  845. You're a different person that's hypocrisy.

  846. That's hypocrisy and that is greatly connected to God's name

  847. being represented. So here we sit with this

  848. commandment. Knowing that, yes, Jesus

  849. fulfilled it for us and there was no deceit found in his

  850. mouth, it was no deceit. Found in the mouth of Jesus and

  851. his even his speech was transferred to our account in

  852. righteousness. So that when we stand before,

  853. God, you have never taken the lord's name in vain.

  854. But because, as Believers, we are called to be holy as he is

  855. Holy in. This law is written on our

  856. hearts. Can you imagine I hope you feel

  857. the weight of this. That not only in my speech.

  858. Can I take his name in vain? But in my actions, I can take

  859. his name in vain. What is that supposed to produce

  860. in you and me especially in light of James 3.

  861. What is James 3 talk about? Yeah, who can control this

  862. tongue? Nobody's able to control this

  863. tongue. Except one person.

  864. Jesus. So it brings us to this place.

  865. God Almighty, I need your help. I need you.

  866. Lord help me be aware that in every moment of my day.

  867. I'm representing you. People know that I'm a Christian

  868. people know that I've committed myself to the local church.

  869. People know that I've given my life to the lordship of Jesus

  870. Christ and they're watching me help me.

  871. Be consistent, help me know that in all my dealings with her

  872. privately or secretly your name. You reputation who you are.

  873. Displayed through me. Is that hand?

  874. And we go back to Exodus 20. verse 7 and he says something

  875. concerning Those who do not take this command.

  876. Seriously, he says what? For the Lord will not hold him

  877. Guiltless. Who takes his name in vain.

  878. there are two ways that looking at that, we have to understand

  879. that God is able to bring about retribution, to those who take

  880. his name in vain, in this life, There's that famous story of the

  881. Titanic that you probably heard that you not.

  882. People are debating whether it was the captain or one of the

  883. workers of the ship who said this statement.

  884. But before this, this ship was launched.

  885. The Titanic somebody made this bold, Proclamation, not even God

  886. himself can sink this ship. And we know what happened there.

  887. And you can even hear different stories concerning even

  888. biblically. We see.

  889. Leviticus 20 forward. God, can't step in for the sake

  890. of the honor of his name. In his wisdom knowing that this

  891. would bring glory to him. He will bring that person to

  892. guilt and condemnation because of taking his name lately.

  893. But there is one thing for certain concerning, those who

  894. take his name in vain, That there is a time in which he will

  895. judge every man. What did Jesus say in Matthew

    Matthew 12:36

  896. 12, verse 36, I tell you on the day of judgment, people will

  897. give account for every careless word, they speak.

  898. Every careless word that has been spoken, has been recorded

  899. in heaven. And secret one-on-one alone and

  900. public behind the pulpit. Every word will be taken into

  901. account. Even the ones that were just

  902. loose with. And that to me, brings much

  903. comfort. You probably looking me like,

  904. are you serious? I don't even remember what I

  905. said. 10 minutes ago. Now, I'll tell you why.

  906. It brings me much joy. because when I'm in a room and people

  907. use the name of Jesus, so carelessly Or perhaps you're

  908. watching something. And innocently.

  909. Not knowing somebody goes on and just trashes the name of Jesus.

  910. Or the celebrities that come and speak of their success in bold

  911. leave. And say, I remember when I heard

  912. one person said this will boldly and one of the awards show said

  913. I'm not thanking Jesus for this. Because so many people are in

  914. the habit of doing so. Every politician.

  915. Every false teacher, every great leader throughout the ages.

  916. All of those who have taken that precious, holy righteous name

  917. and if attempted to squander it and to defile it and to pull it

  918. out of the hearts of people as something to be treasured, every

  919. single, one of them will declare with their mouths that he is

  920. Lord and they will give an account and they will realize

  921. how foolish they were for declaring his name to be solo.

  922. And To squash it and try to put it in the dirt, they will

  923. realize they made a great mistake when they stand before

  924. him. And they will realize that he is

  925. the name above every other name. So, that brings us to this place

  926. to say Lord, while people want to ruin that name.

  927. When people want to take that name and Associate it with so

  928. much filth and garbage and wickedness may, I represent it.

  929. Well, May I speak to you about you in the fear of you help me,

  930. understand the wonderful balance that you Lord.

  931. Our Father by your also King. And Lord.

  932. More importantly though it is important made my life

  933. demonstrate the consistency of the fact that you are the Lord

  934. of all. And let the world do what it

  935. wants to do. One day, they will pay for it.

  936. One day, Jesus is name, will be exalted in the Earth, right?

  937. Be still and know that I am God I will be exalted in Nations.

  938. He says that and we can take joy in that the third commandment

  939. deals with God's desire and passion for his name.

  940. May we have that same passion Let's pray.

  941. Lord, we say tonight. How beautiful is your name?

  942. That Lord, At The Mention Of The Name of Jesus.

  943. Even a whisper can bring so much peace.

  944. Can offer so much hope. And is the name by which we are

  945. saved. Teachers that a whole bad name.

  946. Teach us how to meditate on that name.

  947. Teach us how to Faithfully Proclaim your name.

  948. Lord, may we be, we be brought to a place where even the

  949. mention of your name Stills are spheres.

  950. Sanctifies our thoughts. And brings us to a place of holy

  951. reverence to you. And father, we address you and

  952. say how do it be your name. There is none like you.

  953. You are set apart. You are transcended.

  954. There is none like you and God, we recognize your name as such.

  955. And father we ask by the power of your spirit.

  956. That you would teach us how to speak and live in a way that

  957. brings honor to the name that we represent.

  958. And Lord, if there is any inconsistencies in our life.

  959. That would make others that are looking at us.

  960. To question the god that we serve, forgive us and Lord, by

  961. your spirit, from head to toe, bring us to a place.

  962. Where people would want to know the name that we live for God.

  963. We need your help in all these things.

  964. We thank you that in Jesus. They are fulfilled and they've

  965. been transferred to our account. But Lord, in living this life

  966. representing you. We not only say that you are the

  967. only god of Our Lives. We not only say that we will not

  968. make you into something that fits our idea of who you should

  969. be a wee in the third. Commandment say help us help us

  970. treasure and value and uphold the name of Jesus help us And

  971. more soft in our hearts to such a degree again.

  972. We ask that the name of Jesus would never lose its charm.

  973. That it would do something to our faith.

  974. And that would bring us to a place of wanting to even rejoice

  975. and worship you. And so, Lord even tonight.

  976. We sanctify your name. We bless your name.

  977. And what we sing to you. In response to the Glorious

  978. name. In your name, we pray.
