  1. I ask for God's blessing on our time.

  2. Would you pray with me?

  3. Father, thank you that you draw near to us in your word

  4. to reveal to us, Jesus.

  5. We pray by your spirit's presence

  6. that for each of us,

  7. there would be a fresh insight.

  8. There would be a particular encounter.

  9. Lord, there would be a moment

  10. where we are more aware of your grace and mercy

  11. given to us in Christ

  12. than anything you are calling us to do.

  13. Thank you, Lord, for the blessing of this gathering,

  14. for what you're doing in and amongst

  15. the people of Trinity Cambridge,

  16. for your glory and the good of this community.

  17. Join us now for Jesus' glory.

  18. We pray this in his name.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. Amen.

  22. Well, that was a gracious introduction by Sean.

  23. And thank you, brother, for those kind words.

  24. I do wish that my wife, Linda, could be here.

  25. She is with our church in Franklin, Massachusetts,

  26. a sister church of yours.

  27. And you'll hear about her later in the message.

  28. But she sends her regards to you,

  29. and as does our congregation.

  30. I actually discovered that two of our members are here

  31. celebrating their anniversary.

  32. So I hope you'll get to know them, Tina and Mike Chang,

  33. who can you just wave at the...

  34. That's great.

  35. I feel bad that they have to sit and listen to me,

  36. having heard this message,

  37. and would be eager for them to come again

  38. so they can be ministered to by your lead pastor.

  39. But happy anniversary to the Changs.

  40. Real quick, when Sean comes to our church,

  41. we always ask for a Trinity update.

  42. So I'm assuming he would want me to give you,

  43. in two minutes, a Crossway Church update.

  44. We're celebrating our 16th year,

  45. the beginning of our sixth in Franklin.

  46. We started in a small community called Mansfield.

  47. We were planted through Sovereign Grace Churches

  48. back in 2001.

  49. This past summer's been quite full for us as a congregation.

  50. We attempted to do three things

  51. in the course of about six weeks.

  52. The first of which you may have heard of

  53. was the celebration event in Lancaster, PA.

  54. We had several families and singles participate in that,

  55. which was a conference principally sponsored

  56. by Sovereign Grace Churches in the Northeast,

  57. but there were others who joined us.

  58. That was immediately followed by a week of serving

  59. and loving a community in East Providence,

  60. a subset of Providence.

  61. There's a new church work there called Godspeed,

  62. and we've been working with them,

  63. and they've been partnering with us for years,

  64. and they recently moved into that community.

  65. And so it's a ministry among the urban poor,

  66. and we're joining them because our desire

  67. is in a couple of years to plant a church

  68. into another suburb of Providence, Pawtucket,

  69. and learn not only the rhythms of life there

  70. and meet the people,

  71. but partner with churches in our region

  72. for the sake of the gospel.

  73. So we did that for a week.

  74. Tina and her daughters were part of that,

  75. and I believe they were part of the celebration too.

  76. And then last week we had youth camp

  77. with friends in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

  78. And I don't know if you've ever been to a youth camp.

  79. At 54 years old, a youth camp means no sleep,

  80. radical change to your diet,

  81. high energy activities all day,

  82. and then when you return home,

  83. about three days of foggy brain.

  84. So I'm somewhere in that three day of foggy brain.

  85. But glad to be here with you.

  86. Thankful that we are partnering in our mission together

  87. and thankful that you are a part of this community

  88. as we are a part of our community

  89. seeking to love our neighbors

  90. and through our love point them to Christ our Savior.

  91. It's a privilege to be here.

  92. Our church, I believe,

  93. our youth group was here with you earlier this year.

  94. One of those was my daughter,

  95. and so I'm glad now to see the Lusitania

  96. with my own eyes with you in it.

  97. How many of you, as we turn our attention to the text,

  98. how many of you this summer

  99. have been to either a show or a concert

  100. or even seen a movie this summer?

  101. Just shut by way of hands.

  102. Great.

  103. Then you can identify with this illustration

  104. as we think about our passage this morning.

  105. Where you sit when you attend Shakespeare on the Common

  106. in downtown Boston

  107. or watch Dunkirk, the movie,

  108. if you take it in a theater,

  109. or in my case, the U2 concert at Gillette,

  110. where you sit shapes your experience

  111. and perspective of what you see, doesn't it?

  112. So where I sat at U2 was the only place

  113. I could afford to sit,

  114. which was the standing room-only free space,

  115. which if you've been to Gillette Stadium,

  116. you know that as you come from the upper level

  117. to the lower level,

  118. below the restaurant CBS scene,

  119. there are some stairs there,

  120. and there's a courtyard,

  121. and they allow you for every concert,

  122. whether it was Coldplay on Friday night

  123. or U2 back in June,

  124. to stand there,

  125. and then when the concert begins

  126. and they clear away the security,

  127. they actually allow you to move all the way up

  128. to where the fake lighthouse is

  129. and the bridge,

  130. and you can have a clear sight view

  131. of the band performing.

  132. What I didn't realize is,

  133. though it was a great concert

  134. because it was free,

  135. is that I had friends,

  136. actually church-planning friends,

  137. who were in the cheap seats,

  138. the nosebleed seats.

  139. They were inside but up high,

  140. and I could tell

  141. because as I was tweeting out

  142. during the concert,

  143. excerpts from,

  144. they were seeing my tweets

  145. and texting me back,

  146. where are you sitting?

  147. I'm in the cheap, free spot.

  148. Oh, we're up high.

  149. And they had the panoramic view,

  150. you know,

  151. where everyone does their thing

  152. with their cameras and their lights

  153. and so there.

  154. And then before the concert was over,

  155. I realized that we had acquaintances

  156. that were about 30 feet

  157. from the front of the stage

  158. in the general admission,

  159. and so they let me know

  160. at the end of the show

  161. that they actually were in there.

  162. They didn't want to see me

  163. since they had paid so much

  164. for their seats,

  165. but they were,

  166. and you know what I realized

  167. in that moment?

  168. I realized in that moment

  169. that where you are

  170. during a concert

  171. or an event

  172. shapes your perspective.

  173. The book of Genesis

  174. is a lot like that,

  175. isn't it?

  176. We are given

  177. in the book of Genesis

  178. chapters that cover

  179. years,

  180. maybe even decades

  181. in the life of a character,

  182. and so we get more

  183. of the nosebleed

  184. or the panoramic view

  185. of the story

  186. for God's purposes,

  187. but this morning

  188. we're in the general admission.

  189. We're 30 feet

  190. from the stage

  191. because the narrative

  192. slows down,

  193. and God by his spirit

  194. through this inspired word

  195. brings us up close

  196. into literally

  197. a few hours

  198. of Jacob's life,

  199. pivotal hours,

  200. so that we don't miss

  201. the details

  202. of this particular moment.

  203. Why that's encouraging to me

  204. as not only are you learning

  205. how to read the scriptures,

  206. it'll still encourage to me

  207. how God relates to us.

  208. In Christ,

  209. God has brought you

  210. and I

  211. in close to him

  212. so we don't miss

  213. a single detail

  214. of what he's like,

  215. but if you're like me,

  216. oftentimes in our relationship

  217. with God,

  218. we feel

  219. as if God is far away,

  220. and we're up

  221. in the cheap seats

  222. looking down,

  223. and we know God's at work,

  224. we don't quite understand

  225. what he's doing

  226. in the details

  227. of our life,

  228. or we can even feel

  229. that we're outside

  230. looking in,

  231. but the good news is

  232. that this passage

  233. reminds us

  234. is wherever we feel

  235. we're sitting,

  236. God draws near to us.

  237. He continues to search

  238. and seek

  239. and find us

  240. because of his great love,

  241. which invites us

  242. as we consider

  243. the life of Jacob

  244. this morning

  245. to entrust ourselves

  246. to God again

  247. because of his

  248. gracious promises

  249. which are unfailing,

  250. and that's the main point

  251. this morning.

  252. Wherever you find yourself

  253. this morning,

  254. wherever you are

  255. in your understanding

  256. of the scriptures,

  257. your exploration

  258. of Christianity,

  259. your understanding

  260. of the gospel,

  261. perhaps you're new

  262. to this church

  263. or new to the faith,

  264. the good news

  265. of Genesis 32 and 33

  266. is we can entrust

  267. ourselves to God

  268. because his gracious

  269. promises to us

  270. are filling,

  271. but that's also true

  272. for us who have been

  273. walking with him

  274. for a long time.

  275. We need to be reminded,

  276. we need to be renewed

  277. in our hope

  278. that we can

  279. entrust ourselves

  280. to God

  281. because of his

  282. gracious

  283. and unfailing

  284. promises to us.

  285. This is a great

  286. Old Testament chapter.

  287. It's great

  288. because not only

  289. does the narrator

  290. slow down

  291. in order to help us

  292. focus on Jacob's

  293. remarkable transformation

  294. as he returns

  295. to Canaan,

  296. confronts his fears,

  297. and wrestles with God

  298. in preparation

  299. for his unexpected

  300. and surprising

  301. reconciliation

  302. to his brother Esau,

  303. but it's a great chapter

  304. because of what it

  305. reminds us

  306. of Christ

  307. and his purposes

  308. and plans

  309. for our lives.

  310. I'm breaking down,

  311. I'm going to limit

  312. my comments

  313. to chapter 32

  314. and the structure

  315. of the passage.

  316. We're going to look

  317. at three sections

  318. this morning.

  319. The first section,

  320. the opening section,

  321. verses 1 and 2,

  322. Jacob's mounting fears

  323. and reassurance

  324. of faith.

  325. And then the second section,

  326. which we'll get to

  327. in a moment,

  328. beginning in verse 22,

  329. Jacob's mortal

  330. combat with the

  331. mysterious figure

  332. and then his memorable

  333. reconciliation

  334. with Esau at the end.

  335. Let's look at the first section,

  336. verses 1 and 2,

  337. Jacob's mounting fears

  338. and reassurance

  339. of faith.

  340. Let's look again

  341. at what is recorded here.

  342. Jacob went on his way.

  343. The angels of God

  344. met him

  345. and when Jacob saw them,

  346. he said,

  347. this is God's camp.

  348. So he called

  349. the name

  350. of the place

  351. Mahanam.

  352. The chapter opens

  353. with the sudden visitation

  354. of many angels.

  355. These mighty

  356. messengers of God,

  357. Jacob exclaims,

  358. are camping

  359. near his camp.

  360. So did you notice

  361. that as Jacob

  362. departed the land

  363. with a vision

  364. of angels,

  365. he now reenters

  366. the land

  367. accompanied by

  368. a host of angels.

  369. In the story

  370. of Jacob,

  371. when he left

  372. as a fugitive,

  373. having stolen

  374. his brother's birthright,

  375. he left Canaan

  376. with a vision

  377. or dream of angels.

  378. Now he reenters

  379. the land

  380. and he is

  381. accompanied by

  382. a host of angels.

  383. And it begs the question,

  384. I'm sure you asked

  385. this question,

  386. why?

  387. Why do these

  388. angels,

  389. these mighty

  390. messengers of God,

  391. suddenly reappear

  392. to the patriarch?

  393. And I think,

  394. I submit for your

  395. consideration,

  396. the abrupt

  397. appearance

  398. of not just

  399. the angels,

  400. but what does

  401. Jacob call it?

  402. Look down at your camp.

  403. Look down at your text.

  404. The camp

  405. of God.

  406. The abrupt

  407. appearance

  408. of these mighty

  409. messengers,

  410. the camp of God,

  411. is because

  412. God wants

  413. to reassure

  414. Jacob

  415. of his presence.

  416. When our fears

  417. are mounting,

  418. God wants

  419. to reassure

  420. us

  421. of his

  422. presence

  423. too.

  424. Turn back

  425. to Genesis 28.

  426. Just look briefly

  427. at verse 12

  428. with me.

  429. Jacob

  430. has a dream.

  431. the twisted

  432. one,

  433. the manipulator,

  434. the one who

  435. steals

  436. from his

  437. brother

  438. and lies

  439. to his

  440. father

  441. to get

  442. what he wants,

  443. now is a fugitive

  444. fleeing his

  445. brother Esau's

  446. murderous plans

  447. and he has a

  448. dream.

  449. And what does

  450. he see in the

  451. dream?

  452. He sees

  453. angels

  454. ascending

  455. and descending

  456. on the ladder

  457. into heaven,

  458. God's throne

  459. room.

  460. Now,

  461. in this

  462. chapter,

  463. chapter 32,

  464. God gives

  465. him a second

  466. vision of

  467. angels.

  468. But this

  469. is on his

  470. return

  471. into the

  472. promised land.

  473. Why is

  474. God

  475. doing

  476. this?

  477. What does

  478. it trigger

  479. perhaps in

  480. Jacob's

  481. memory

  482. as God

  483. do this?

  484. Besides his

  485. awe of the

  486. presence of

  487. these mighty

  488. angels,

  489. God is

  490. reminding

  491. Jacob

  492. that he

  493. is not

  494. alone.

  495. God

  496. is not

  497. this is

  498. the

  499. reminder

  500. through

  501. his

  502. presence

  503. of the

  504. promises

  505. God

  506. made

  507. to

  508. Jacob

  509. when

  510. he

  511. left.

  512. the

  513. Lord

  514. Why should

  515. that

  516. be

  517. important

  518. to you?

  519. Why is

  520. that

  521. important

  522. to

  523. Israel

  524. too

  525. who

  526. originally

  527. received

  528. the

  529. story?

  530. Why should

  531. that be

  532. important

  533. to us

  534. at Trinity

  535. Cambridge?

  536. is because God never forgets his promises to us,

  537. even when we do.

  538. He never forgets his promises.

  539. But he often has to remind us of his promises

  540. because we often forget his promises,

  541. even those promises found his word.

  542. Now, think about it.

  543. If your friend made you a promise

  544. that was particularly meaningful and important to you,

  545. would you forget it?

  546. Probably not.

  547. If you're married

  548. and your spouse makes a promise to you

  549. that's important to you,

  550. do we forget it?

  551. Never.

  552. If your employer makes a promise to you

  553. at the end of this year,

  554. I promise you,

  555. do we forget that?

  556. Not on our lives,

  557. but I often forget

  558. the very promises God has made to me

  559. and keeps in Christ.

  560. This chapter reminds me

  561. that even when I forget God's promises,

  562. he remains faithful to keep them

  563. and he will often remind me of them,

  564. often in the context of God's gathered community,

  565. but every day that I look to him

  566. for reassurance of his grace.

  567. No more do we need this

  568. than when fears are mounting

  569. and decisions are looming

  570. and conflicts are impending

  571. as was all facing Jacob.

  572. What is the purpose of this vision for Jacob?

  573. The purpose of this section

  574. is to help Jacob

  575. think about God's word to him in the past,

  576. remember his word of promise in the presence,

  577. and reassure him of his presence

  578. so that he can be confident

  579. that as he pursues reconciliation with Esau,

  580. God is helping him too.

  581. Friend, here's a question

  582. for purposeful reflection application.

  583. What promise might God be helping you

  584. to remember this week

  585. as you obey him in the daily moments of life?

  586. If you're not sure,

  587. may I urge you to consider

  588. your order of service,

  589. which contains many promises

  590. from God's word

  591. of his forgiveness,

  592. of his presence,

  593. of his provision,

  594. and ultimately of his blessing

  595. given to us in Christ.

  596. God never forgets his promises.

  597. Indeed, he often providentially reminds us of them

  598. so that we might not forget.

  599. That's part one.

  600. Part two, as we transition.

  601. Encouraged by the vision of the angels,

  602. Jacob now decides to do a hard thing first

  603. to a matter that has been increasingly heavy

  604. on his heart for 20 years.

  605. He decides to come back to Canaan

  606. to pursue reconciliation with his brother

  607. after his terrible mistreatment of him

  608. and their broken relationship.

  609. Look again at verse 3.

  610. Chapter 32.

  611. And Jacob sent messengers before him

  612. to Esau, his brother,

  613. in the land of Seir,

  614. the country of Edom,

  615. instructing them,

  616. Thus you shall say to my lord Esau,

  617. Thus says your servant Jacob,

  618. I have sojourned with Laban

  619. and stayed until now.

  620. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks,

  621. male servants and female servants.

  622. I have sent to tell my lord

  623. in order that I may find favor

  624. in your sight.

  625. It's interesting as we look at this next section

  626. that Esau does not block

  627. Jacob's return trip into Canaan.

  628. He had settled far to the south

  629. at Mount Seir in Edom,

  630. but apparently it was a spiritual necessity

  631. for Jacob for making things right

  632. with his brother

  633. that drove Jacob

  634. to journey south first

  635. to where Esau was

  636. for Canaan lies to the west.

  637. In support of this,

  638. Derek Kidner,

  639. a wonderful Old Testament commentator,

  640. observes that the sequence

  641. of chapters 32 and 33,

  642. which culminates in chapter 35,

  643. powerfully acts out the principles

  644. of spiritual reconciliation

  645. outlined in the New Testament.

  646. But did you notice

  647. Jacob's faith in God

  648. is tested

  649. as he begins his journey home?

  650. Not by wild animals

  651. that crouch at the border,

  652. nor by raiding nomadic tribes

  653. that threaten to kill him

  654. as an unwelcome visitor.

  655. Jacob's faith is tested

  656. by those noisemakers

  657. that reside within our hearts too.

  658. Fear.

  659. The voice of fear.

  660. And the reason it's often

  661. a test of our faith

  662. is because the voice of fear

  663. is our own.

  664. It's our own voice.

  665. The thing about fear in my life,

  666. it's not only that it's a familiar voice,

  667. but fear, as people have often noted,

  668. never travels alone.

  669. It's a pack animal.

  670. And it always gathers friends.

  671. Friends like good desires that I have

  672. that now feel threatened

  673. by this course of action

  674. or this indication by God

  675. to do something,

  676. which then makes the fear

  677. a test of my faith

  678. in God's faithfulness

  679. and his call to my obedience.

  680. But notice how Jacob responds.

  681. Jacob responds to his fears

  682. with a peaceful gesture to Esau.

  683. He sends to his brother

  684. donkeys and oxen and flocks

  685. and male servants and female servants,

  686. verse 5,

  687. so that he would find favor

  688. in his sight.

  689. He sends messengers with gifts

  690. and he sends them

  691. with a message of peace.

  692. The message Jacob tells his messengers

  693. to share with Esau

  694. speak of how God has blessed him

  695. with so many things

  696. while serving Laban and Paranarum.

  697. Jacob is not trying to aggravate

  698. or tweak Esau here.

  699. He's basically saying to his brother,

  700. I am a very wealthy man.

  701. I don't need anything of yours.

  702. I don't want to take anything of yours.

  703. I'm not going to trick you

  704. out of anything that is yours.

  705. You can have everything that's yours

  706. because I don't need it

  707. because God has prospered me.

  708. Jacob, I seek nothing that belongs to you

  709. except your face.

  710. Wow!

  711. Has Jacob changed from 20 years before?

  712. The twister, the manipulator,

  713. the liar, the cheater, the schemer.

  714. The thief now returns to Jacob

  715. and wants to make peace.

  716. Did you notice how he addresses his brother?

  717. He addresses his brother as Lord.

  718. Verse 5,

  719. I have sent to tell my Lord.

  720. These words may indicate Jacob's repentance

  721. for stealing his older brother's blessing.

  722. And so now he wants to honor Esau,

  723. his older brother,

  724. not only with gifts,

  725. but with deference and respect.

  726. But verse 6 tells us

  727. that the report of the messengers

  728. is disturbing.

  729. When we came to your brother Esau,

  730. he's coming now to meet you

  731. and there are 400 men with him.

  732. That would not indicate

  733. that they had been able to convey successfully

  734. Jacob's overture to Esau.

  735. So Jacob, verse 7,

  736. is filled with great distress.

  737. It would distress me

  738. if I hadn't seen him for 20 years

  739. only to hear the news

  740. that he's coming to me

  741. with an army of 400 men.

  742. Oh my.

  743. Let's pause for a moment

  744. and consider this.

  745. God is at work in Jacob's life.

  746. And of course,

  747. that of Israel's

  748. who first received the story

  749. about the end of the promised land

  750. to strengthen their faith

  751. and renew their obedience in him.

  752. First,

  753. he does so by reminding us

  754. that God often strengthens our faith

  755. not by removing all danger

  756. and pressure from our lives,

  757. but by sustaining us through it.

  758. God strengthens our faith

  759. not by removing our trials,

  760. but by upholding us through them.

  761. Now let me just make a pause.

  762. This is a...

  763. We just spent a week

  764. at youth camp in Daniel.

  765. So I'm going to use this

  766. as an illustration.

  767. It is true

  768. that God doesn't remove us

  769. from all of our trials

  770. and temptations,

  771. but to strengthen our faith.

  772. But did you notice

  773. when those of you

  774. that have read the book of Daniel

  775. that when we get to chapter 3

  776. and the famous story

  777. of his three companions

  778. who were thrown

  779. into the fiery furnace

  780. for not bowing to the idols,

  781. what it says of Daniel

  782. right before that chapter?

  783. Daniel's doing the king's work.

  784. He's on an assignment

  785. and Daniel is spared

  786. the trial of the fiery furnace

  787. at the end of chapter 2.

  788. And as I read that

  789. and then read of the...

  790. really the remarkable courage

  791. and faith of the three

  792. that were thrown

  793. into the fiery furnace

  794. and stood faithful to God,

  795. I had this thought.

  796. How many fiery afflictions

  797. has God spared me

  798. that I'm unaware of?

  799. And how often do I just simply pause

  800. and say,

  801. Lord, thank you,

  802. notwithstanding the fiery trial I'm in

  803. for the many ways

  804. you have spared me

  805. or shown mercy to me

  806. or been uncommonly kind to me,

  807. which then brings perspective

  808. and hope to the trial

  809. and fears that I now face.

  810. So when I say to you,

  811. God often strengthens our faith

  812. not by removing us

  813. from all danger and pressure.

  814. I don't want to imply by that

  815. that the Christian life

  816. is just one trial of our faith.

  817. There are many, many stops

  818. along the way

  819. where we can simply pause

  820. and say,

  821. thank you, Lord,

  822. for your faithfulness

  823. in providing and protecting

  824. and delivering me.

  825. But he does not remove us

  826. from all of our trials.

  827. So it took Jacob

  828. enormous courage

  829. to return to his homeland

  830. and continue to seek out Esau.

  831. And so here's a final application point.

  832. Spiritual courage

  833. from our faith

  834. is not found merely by God

  835. removing all danger from our lives,

  836. but by faith facing our fears,

  837. obeying God's word,

  838. and through God's blessing

  839. growing in our faith

  840. and dependency in Christ.

  841. Friend,

  842. where might God

  843. be testing your faith today?

  844. Where might God be testing

  845. the corporate faith

  846. of Trinity Cambridge Church?

  847. Where might God be testing

  848. and proving the faith

  849. of Crossway Church

  850. or even the broader body of Christ

  851. in this city or this region?

  852. It's not by removing every danger

  853. or difficulty from our life,

  854. but by helping us face it

  855. in order to deepen our faith

  856. and our courage

  857. through Christ this week.

  858. How might God be encouraging you

  859. to respond?

  860. God strengthens our faith,

  861. not by removing all danger

  862. and pressure,

  863. but by sustaining us through it.

  864. Which begs the question,

  865. how does God sustain Jacob through it?

  866. How did God do it?

  867. And what would God have to teach Israel

  868. through it?

  869. And what did God,

  870. by implication,

  871. teach us?

  872. Verse 9,

  873. Jacob's first recorded prayer

  874. in all of Scripture.

  875. One of the ways

  876. Jacob is sustained

  877. and finds the spiritual courage

  878. necessary to face his brother Esau

  879. is Jacob is learning how to pray.

  880. Verse 9,

  881. let's look at it again.

  882. O God of my father,

  883. Abraham,

  884. and God of my father,

  885. Isaac.

  886. Notice he addresses God

  887. by his covenant name.

  888. O Lord,

  889. L capital O capital R capital T,

  890. O Yahweh,

  891. who said to me,

  892. return to your country

  893. and to your kindred

  894. that I may do you good.

  895. I am not worthy

  896. of the least of all the deeds

  897. of steadfast love

  898. and of faithfulness

  899. that you have shown

  900. to your servant,

  901. for with only my staff

  902. I cross this Jordan.

  903. And now I have become two camps.

  904. Please deliver me

  905. from the hand of my brother,

  906. from the hand of Esau,

  907. for I fear him,

  908. that he may come and attack me,

  909. the mothers with the children.

  910. But you said,

  911. I will surely do you good

  912. and make your offspring

  913. as the sand of the sea,

  914. which cannot be numbered

  915. for the multitude.

  916. What a prayer.

  917. What a prayer.

  918. prayer.

  919. Jacob provides Israel

  920. with a model prayer.

  921. Jacob provides us

  922. with a model prayer.

  923. But here's what's interesting

  924. why this encourages me.

  925. It's not a model prayer.

  926. This is Jacob's first recorded prayer

  927. in Scripture,

  928. meaning much of his life

  929. that has been walked out with God

  930. has not enlisted

  931. the grace reserved for prayer.

  932. But he is learning.

  933. God in his mercy and grace

  934. is teaching him.

  935. Even at this late juncture

  936. in this significant moment,

  937. God is helping him

  938. to express his need.

  939. But notice,

  940. not only does he express his need,

  941. he contemplates God's promises

  942. while he prays.

  943. Verse 12.

  944. He bases his entire prayer

  945. on the covenant promises

  946. God has already given to him.

  947. You know, it's interesting.

  948. Jacob's phrase here in verse 12

  949. borrows both from what God said to him

  950. in Genesis 28,

  951. but also from Genesis 22.

  952. And so conceivably,

  953. the language here of these prayers

  954. is not just what God

  955. has personally spoken to Jacob,

  956. which he has,

  957. but he is reciting the promises

  958. God gave to his ancestor Abraham.

  959. As if to say,

  960. God's promises are unfailing.

  961. And therefore,

  962. my faith,

  963. listen,

  964. is in God's word

  965. and not my ability

  966. to be faithful.

  967. Let me say this again.

  968. His model prayer

  969. reminds me,

  970. reminds,

  971. is reminds us,

  972. is our faith

  973. has a sure

  974. and lasting hope.

  975. It's in God's word

  976. and God's promises

  977. and not in our faithfulness.

  978. Why will Trinity Cambridge

  979. prosper in the biblical sense

  980. of that word?

  981. He will use our efforts.

  982. He will be faithful

  983. to our sacrifices.

  984. He will,

  985. he hears our prayers,

  986. but ultimately,

  987. he will be faithful

  988. to Trinity Cambridge Church

  989. in East Cambridge

  990. as he is faithful

  991. to every Bible-believing,

  992. gospel-believing church

  993. in this city

  994. and in this region

  995. and in this nation.

  996. not because of our faithfulness.

  997. He will be faithful

  998. because he is faithful

  999. to his promises.

  1000. God's word

  1001. is a sure foundation.

  1002. And so Jacob

  1003. is pleading God's promises

  1004. as he prays.

  1005. Friend,

  1006. can you help me?

1007. And can we help one another

  1008. in the situations

  1009. or difficulties we face?

  1010. not only to turn

  1011. to the Lord

  1012. in prayer this week,

  1013. but to remember,

  1014. remember specific promises

  1015. that help us

1016. put our trust in God's love

  1017. and faithfulness

  1018. and promises to you.

1019. Let me give you one

1020. and we'll turn for home,

  1021. Sean,

  1022. to close this out.

  1023. Psalm 9.

1024. Turn with me to Psalm 9.

  1025. It's a simple verse

  1026. from Psalm 9.

  1027. And I need simple

  1028. at 54 to remember

  1029. scripture.

  1030. These people who memorize

  1031. the book of Hebrews

  1032. and recite them

  1033. at conferences,

1034. I have nothing in common

  1035. with them.

  1036. I can't remember

  1037. my birthday

1038. and my pin numbers anymore

1039. or how old I am.

1040. But I can remember this.

  1041. Psalm 9,

    Psalms 9:9

  1042. verse 9 and 10.

1043. The Lord is a stronghold

  1044. for the oppressed,

  1045. a stronghold

  1046. in times of trouble.

1047. And those who know your name

1048. put their trust in you.

  1049. For you, O Lord,

  1050. have not forsaken

  1051. those who seek you.

  1052. What a promise.

1053. Those who know your name,

  1054. those who know Jesus,

1055. those who by grace and mercy

  1056. God in His kindness

  1057. has opened our eyes

1058. to not only believe in Him

  1059. but receive from Him

  1060. His precious promises

  1061. of forgiveness

  1062. and salvation

  1063. and comfort

  1064. and an abiding presence.

1065. Those who know your name

1066. not only put their trust in you,

1067. but when we seek first

  1068. your kingdom

  1069. and its righteousness,

  1070. what's the promise?

1071. He does not forsake us.

  1072. Wow.

  1073. Wow.

  1074. That simple promise

  1075. becomes the fuel

  1076. for our intercession

  1077. when fears are mounting

  1078. and difficulties are real

1079. and the report of our messengers

  1080. is disturbing.

  1081. Friend, where might God

  1082. be desiring to strengthen

  1083. your faith this week

  1084. in courage?

  1085. Not by removing danger,

  1086. but by having you

  1087. simply remember

  1088. and recite

  1089. and reflect on

  1090. God's promises

  1091. in His Word

  1092. while you pray.

  1093. Plead the promise

  1094. while you pray

  1095. because He is faithful.

  1096. Let's conclude

  1097. the passage

  1098. with His Mortal Kombat

  1099. 22 to 32.

  1100. What a stunning

  1101. turn of events.

  1102. What a surprising

  1103. reversal

  1104. as God

  1105. deals first

  1106. with Jacob

  1107. before Jacob

  1108. has to deal

  1109. with Esau.

  1110. It would probably

  1111. be one of the

  1112. darkest nights

  1113. of Jacob's life

  1114. as he sat alone

  1115. reflecting on his past.

  1116. He sent everyone

  1117. ahead of him

  1118. across the brook

1119. and as he sits there,

  1120. have you ever had

  1121. one of those

  1122. sleepless nights

  1123. where your thoughts

  1124. are racing

  1125. and you're considering

  1126. what tomorrow

  1127. might bring?

  1128. Jacob has an

  1129. unexpected,

  1130. unplanned

  1131. visit by this

  1132. mystery figure

  1133. and the effect

  1134. and my final point

  1135. is of this

  1136. encounter

  1137. is that God

  1138. grows

  1139. Jacob's

  1140. faith

  1141. by transforming

  1142. his

  1143. weakness

  1144. into his

  1145. greatest

  1146. strength.

  1147. He

  1148. now

  1149. limps.

  1150. That becomes

  1151. his strength,

  1152. his asset,

  1153. his spiritual

  1154. gifting.

  1155. He now

  1156. will

  1157. limp.

  1158. It's a

  1159. crippling

  1160. combat.

  1161. I don't know

  1162. what to compare

  1163. it to.

  1164. I don't do

  1165. boxing.

  1166. I never

  1167. wrestled.

  1168. I played

  1169. tennis.

  1170. I mean,

  1171. they're

  1172. wrestling

  1173. and sweating

  1174. and gouging

  1175. and pulling

  1176. and butting

  1177. heads

  1178. and I

  1179. think there's

  1180. bleeding going

  1181. on and

  1182. there's no

  1183. tap out

  1184. and all

  1185. Jacob could

  1186. do was

  1187. cling on

  1188. to this

  1189. angelic

  1190. mystery

  1191. figure

  1192. or lose

  1193. the battle

  1194. and he's

  1195. not even

  1196. sure who

  1197. it is

  1198. he's wrestling

  1199. with.

  1200. It's dark.

  1201. It's not

  1202. like he can

  1203. whip out

  1204. his phone

  1205. and flip

  1206. on his

  1207. flashlight

  1208. and put

  1209. it in

  1210. the things

  1211. fit.

  1212. Oh,

  1213. this is

  1214. the angel

  1215. Lord.

  1216. Oh,

  1217. this is

  1218. the pre-incarnate

  1219. Christ.

  1220. Oh,

  1221. this is

  1222. a theophany

  1223. or all

  1224. things we

  1225. do to

  1226. make sense

  1227. of it.

  1228. But Hosea

    Hosea 12 chapter mention

  1229. chapter 12

  1230. tells us

  1231. Jacob strove

  1232. with the

  1233. angel.

  1234. Jacob was

  1235. wrestling

  1236. with God

  1237. and God's

  1238. purposes

  1239. as he always

  1240. struggled

  1241. with God

  1242. and God's

  1243. purposes.

  1244. And yet

  1245. what he

  1246. had no

  1247. idea was

  1248. that the

  1249. figure was

  1250. not there

  1251. to punish

  1252. Jacob.

  1253. He was

  1254. not there

  1255. to condemn

  1256. him.

  1257. He was

  1258. in the

  1259. grip.

  1260. I love

  1261. this language

  1262. that Ian

  1263. DeGuit

  1264. has given

  1265. us of

  1266. God's

  1267. relentless

  1268. grace.

  1269. In verse

  1270. 25 it

  1271. says,

  1272. when the

  1273. man saw

  1274. that he

  1275. did not

  1276. prevail against

  1277. Jacob,

  1278. he touched

  1279. his hip

  1280. socket and

  1281. Jacob's hip

  1282. was put out

  1283. of joint

  1284. as he

  1285. wrestled

  1286. with him.

  1287. In other

  1288. words,

  1289. Jacob for

  1290. the rest

  1291. of his

  1292. life was

  1293. reduced to

  1294. weakness.

  1295. His injured

  1296. leg useless

  1297. and dangling.

  1298. But,

  1299. here's amazing

  1300. grace,

  1301. though physically

  1302. weak,

  1303. by faith

  1304. he hung

  1305. on,

  1306. didn't he?

  1307. Till God

  1308. blessed him.

  1309. Jacob

  1310. wrestled

  1311. with the

  1312. angel.

  1313. He is

  1314. reduced

  1315. to a

  1316. limp,

  1317. but he

  1318. hangs

  1319. on to

  1320. receive

  1321. blessing.

  1322. And the

  1323. blessing comes

  1324. in two

  1325. forms.

  1326. He receives

  1327. a new

  1328. name,

  1329. where we're

  1330. told that

  1331. you will no

  1332. longer be

  1333. called

  1334. Jacob,

  1335. but you

  1336. will be

  1337. called

  1338. Israel,

  1339. God's name

  1340. for his

  1341. covenant

  1342. partner and

  1343. for his

  1344. chosen

  1345. people.

  1346. But also,

  1347. there will be

  1348. a memorial

  1349. that will be

  1350. established of

  1351. this event,

  1352. which will

  1353. remind his

  1354. descendants

  1355. of this

  1356. event and

  1357. its significance,

  1358. that in this

  1359. new name

  1360. and in this

  1361. new identity

  1362. in which God

  1363. is a witness

  1364. between them

  1365. and him.

  1366. The

  1367. limp

  1368. to which

  1369. they now

  1370. have received

  1371. is their

  1372. greatest

  1373. strength.

  1374. No longer

  1375. would they be

  1376. known for

  1377. proud

  1378. self-sufficiency,

  1379. for figuring

  1380. it out,

  1381. but they

  1382. will be

  1383. known by

  1384. grace

  1385. as weak

  1386. and dependent

  1387. and dearly

  1388. loved

  1389. by the

  1390. God

  1391. who keeps

  1392. his

  1393. promises.

  1394. As we

  1395. conclude

  1396. and we

  1397. think about

  1398. the implications

  1399. of

  1400. this

  1401. passage

  1402. to us,

  1403. let us

  1404. remember

  1405. that not

  1406. only does

  1407. God keep

  1408. his

  1409. promises

  1410. to us,

  1411. but

  1412. the new

  1413. name we

  1414. receive in

  1415. Christ,

  1416. we are now

  1417. his sons

  1418. and daughters.

  1419. And the

  1420. weaknesses

  1421. that we

  1422. often feel

  1423. as Christians,

  1424. both to

  1425. remember

  1426. God's

  1427. promises

  1428. and to

  1429. be faithful

  1430. to them.

  1431. That the

  1432. promise

  1433. of this

  1434. passage is

  1435. notwithstanding

  1436. our new

  1437. identity and

  1438. notwithstanding

  1439. our weaknesses

  1440. that Jacob

  1441. held on

  1442. by grace

  1443. and that

  1444. we through

  1445. Christ are

  1446. given

  1447. the faith

  1448. and the

  1449. stamina,

  1450. albeit weak,

  1451. the ability

  1452. to hang

  1453. on to

  1454. God

  1455. by grace

  1456. and God

  1457. has promised

  1458. even in

  1459. our moments

  1460. of greatest

  1461. defeat

  1462. to hang

  1463. on to

  1464. us

  1465. until

  1466. his

  1467. purposes

  1468. are

  1469. performed.

  1470. In just a few

  1471. weeks we're going

  1472. to celebrate

  1473. the 500th

  1474. anniversary of

  1475. the Protestant

  1476. Reformation

  1477. and in

  1478. particular

  1479. the moment

  1480. where Martin

  1481. Luther nailed

  1482. his protests

  1483. if you will

  1484. to the

  1485. church door

  1486. in

  1487. Bittenberg,

  1488. his 95

  1489. thesis.

  1490. Isn't it

  1491. interesting

  1492. that the

  1493. hymn

  1494. that

  1495. Luther

  1496. wrote,

  1497. A Mighty

  1498. Fortress

  1499. of Our

  1500. God,

  1501. has as its

  1502. second verse

  1503. did we

  1504. in our

  1505. own strength

  1506. confide

  1507. our

  1508. striving

  1509. would be

  1510. losing?

  1511. Did we

  1512. in our

  1513. own strength

  1514. confide

  1515. our striving

  1516. would be

  1517. losing?

  1518. Rather,

  1519. Luther

  1520. with us

  1521. invites us

  1522. to entrust

  1523. ourselves

  1524. to God

  1525. because his

  1526. blessings are

  1527. the result

  1528. of his

  1529. graciousness

  1530. to the

  1531. undeserving.

  1532. thing.

  1533. He is

  1534. faithful to

  1535. his

  1536. promises.

  1537. He has

  1538. committed

  1539. himself to

  1540. love us

  1541. eternally.

  1542. And in

  1543. Christ,

  1544. he is with

  1545. us to the

  1546. very end.

  1547. His purpose

  1548. is to

  1549. perform.

  1550. How blessed

  1551. we are when

  1552. we can

  1553. yield to

  1554. God in

  1555. the struggle

  1556. the way

  1557. Jacob did.

  1558. How blessed

  1559. we are when

  1560. a crisis

  1561. comes upon

  1562. us and

  1563. God lays

  1564. his hand

  1565. upon us

  1566. in that

  1567. crisis so

  1568. that we

  1569. become weak

  1570. and limp

  1571. and out of

  1572. joint with

  1573. an appalling

  1574. sense of

  1575. our own

  1576. weakness so

  1577. that we

  1578. can surrender

  1579. and say,

  1580. Lord,

  1581. I cling

  1582. to you.

  1583. Maybe God

  1584. is wrestling

  1585. with you

  1586. today.

  1587. He may be

  1588. saying to

  1589. you and

  1590. to me,

  1591. although you're

  1592. clever and

  1593. astute and

  1594. capable,

  1595. although you

  1596. have believed

  1597. in me,

  1598. you still

  1599. like to

  1600. make your

  1601. own

  1602. arrangements.

  1603. You still

  1604. like to

  1605. manipulate the

  1606. circumstances of

  1607. your own

  1608. life.

  1609. You still

  1610. like to be

  1611. in charge.

  1612. My child,

  1613. what is

  1614. your name?

  1615. Let's pray.

  1616. Lord, we're

  1617. grateful that

  1618. in Christ we

  1619. live in the

  1620. grip of

  1621. your

  1622. relentless

  1623. grace,

  1624. and we're

  1625. thankful for

  1626. this story,

  1627. your story,

  1628. God's story,

  1629. of your

  1630. faithful purposes

  1631. and plans for

  1632. your people

  1633. then and

  1634. your people

  1635. today.

  1636. Lord, you've

  1637. given us an

  1638. up-close view

  1639. of one man's

  1640. struggles,

  1641. and in so

  1642. doing, for

  1643. many here,

  1644. you've reminded

  1645. us of those

  1646. up-close

  1647. struggles that

  1648. we live with

  1649. every day.

  1650. First, thank

  1651. you for your

  1652. faithful promises,

  1653. promises, even

  1654. when we are

  1655. weak and feel

  1656. like our grip

  1657. is failing.

  1658. Now, Lord,

  1659. help us by

  1660. faith to

  1661. respond to

  1662. your word,

  1663. to receive

  1664. mercy this

  1665. morning,

  1666. and be

  1667. renewed in

  1668. our hope

  1669. that even

  1670. if my grip

  1671. feels like

  1672. it is

  1673. fading, one

  1674. holds tightly

  1675. to me,

  1676. Christ,

  1677. my

  1678. King.

  1679. And may

  1680. we, Lord,

  1681. leave here

  1682. confident,

  1683. more confident

  1684. than we are

  1685. on, not in

  1686. our efforts,

  1687. but in your

  1688. relentless grace

  1689. for Christ's

  1690. glory, and

  1691. for our

  1692. good.

  1693. We pray this

  1694. in Jesus'

  1695. name.

  1696. Everybody

  1697. said,

  1698. Amen.
