  1. And as I begin my message today, I want to bring you first to the end of this passage

  2. where Jacob reminisces about his life to Pharaoh in chapter 47, verse 9.

  3. And he says this,

  4. The days of the years of my sojourning are 130 years.

  5. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life.

  6. And they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers

  7. in the days of their sojourning.

  8. So he says,

  9. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life.

  10. Now, some of you can relate to that.

  11. And even if you personally can't relate to that sentiment,

  12. you at least probably know someone who can.

  13. In this world, we will have tribulation, Jesus said in John 16, 33.

  14. In this world, people suffer from natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

  15. We experience the loss of loved ones.

  16. We endure hardships and injustice.

  17. People hurt each other.

  18. And hurt people hurt more people.

  19. And they sin and suffer in perpetual cycle.

  20. And for that reason, if you look around, there is no shortage of bitterness in this world.

  21. But in this passage, it teaches that for Christians, we can rise above it all

  22. to trust in God in the midst of sin and suffering

  23. because God's sovereign purposes prevail through it all.

  24. Now, that's the main point of this passage.

  25. And we see this truth in Genesis 42 to 47 through the unfolding stories of three main characters.

  26. First, we're going to talk about Judah.

  27. And then second, we're going to talk about Joseph.

  28. And third, we're going to talk about Jacob.

  29. And these chapters are really a literary clinic on character development.

  30. They're such complex, broken characters that God transforms in the course of these chapters

  31. and have been throughout the previous chapters as well.

  32. Their stories teach us that we can trust in God in the midst of sin and suffering

  33. because God's sovereign purposes prevail through it all.

  34. So first of these portraits is of Judah in chapters 42 to 44.

  35. And by Judah, I mean all the brothers of Joseph, the sons of Leah,

  36. because he kind of functions as a representative of the brothers.

  37. And Genesis 41, the chapter before where we are today,

  38. concluded with Joseph rising to the rank of vizier.

  39. It is the second in command in all of Egypt after Pharaoh.

  40. And then he was entrusted with meeting the needs of the Egyptians

  41. during the seven years of famine.

  42. So he was in charge of the storehouses.

  43. And then we are now turning, the scene is turning now to Canaan again

  44. to see how the Israelites, how Jacob and his sons are dealing with the same famine

  45. that struck the area.

  46. And so read 42, turn to 42 verses 1 to 5 with me.

  47. I'm going to read that out loud now.

  48. Verses 1 to 5 of chapter 42.

  49. But actually, before we do that, I'm just going to pray to ask for God's help.

  50. We usually pray before the scripture reading,

  51. so I got kind of thrown off my routine here.

  52. Let me pray.

  53. God, we know that our words often fall to the ground.

  54. They are not fulfilled.

  55. We go back on our promises.

  56. But your words never fall to the ground.

  57. You're always faithful.

  58. That's why we cling to your word.

  59. And we want to hear from your word to be challenged and addressed by it.

  60. So we pray.

  61. We need your help.

  62. That by your spirit, you enliven our hearts,

  63. illuminate our minds to understand and to grasp

  64. and to apply these truths to our lives

  65. so that we can glorify you and honor you.

  66. In Jesus' name we pray.

  67. Amen.

  68. Amen.

  69. Chapter 42, verses 1 to 5.

  70. It says,

  71. When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt,

  72. he said to his sons,

  73. Why do you look at one another?

  74. And he said,

  75. Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt.

  76. Go down and buy grain for us there,

  77. that we may live and not die.

  78. So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.

  79. But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers,

  80. for he feared that harm might happen to him.

  81. Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came,

  82. for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

  83. So Jacob and his family, too, have been affected by the famine that struck Egypt.

  84. And now they are literally running out of food.

  85. And Jacob, in effect, scores his sons.

  86. Like, so what are you doing?

  87. Go and get us some food.

  88. I heard that there's some food in Egypt.

  89. And then it says in verse 3 that ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.

  90. And that's interesting because Joseph now has 11 brothers.

  91. So why just ten?

  92. And then the answer is given immediately by the narrator.

  93. And it's because Jacob, their father, feared that harm might happen to Benjamin, his youngest.

  94. And Benjamin, so Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers.

  95. And Joseph and Benjamin are the two sons, the only two children he has by his favorite wife, Rachel.

  96. And so he's trying to protect his son, Benjamin.

  97. The word harm coming upon Benjamin, it only occurs in Genesis.

  98. In the entire Bible, it occurs four times.

  99. And three of the times it deals with Benjamin.

  100. So he's trying to protect Benjamin from harm.

  101. And the last time it occurs is, interestingly enough, in Exodus 21 to 23,

  102. the harm is applied to a baby that is accidentally miscarried

  103. because some men who are fighting around accidentally hits the pregnant woman

  104. and the baby miscarries.

  105. And the harm is that to have come to the baby.

  106. So Jacob is literally here babying Benjamin, saying,

  107. This is my son.

  108. This is my favorite son.

  109. And no harm is going to come to him on my watch.

  110. So he doesn't send him.

  111. He just sends the ten brothers.

  112. Well, harm might come to them.

  113. But, I mean, that's not a bigger deal for him than it is for Benjamin.

  114. So in God's providence, out of all those thousands probably of people

  115. that are there to buy grain from Egypt,

  116. Joseph is personally overseeing the sale of grain.

  117. And he gets to meet his brothers.

  118. And Joseph recognizes his brothers because, I mean,

  119. they probably haven't changed too much except for aging.

  120. But Joseph has changed quite a bit.

  121. One, he was an adolescent when he was taken to Egypt.

  122. And now he's the second in rank in all of Egypt.

  123. So he's hard to recognize.

  124. So they don't recognize him.

  125. And Joseph takes advantage of that disparity,

  126. that he knows them but they know him not,

  127. to test them to see if they have changed since the time

  128. they sold them into slavery in Egypt.

  129. And so verse 7, it says,

  130. Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them,

  131. but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them.

  132. So these words are signifying that divine justice

  133. is now catching up to Joseph's brothers.

  134. Because if you look at chapter 37, verse 18,

  135. it says that Joseph's brothers conspired against Joseph.

  136. And then in 37, 32 to 33,

  137. after selling Joseph into slavery,

  138. they dipped his robe of many colors in gold blood

  139. and then brought it to his father Jacob,

  140. asking him to identify it, right?

  141. So those two words, identify, right,

  142. and to conspire,

  143. are the exact same Hebrew words that are translated here

  144. as recognized and treat as strangers.

  145. So now, so those two are,

  146. so basically Joseph is doing to his brothers

  147. what his brothers did to him,

  148. exactly what he did to him.

  149. Possibly a little bit of vindictiveness there,

  150. but more likely he's trying to test him,

  151. test them to see where their heart is.

  152. And he accuses them of being spies

  153. sent by foreign power to scout the weakness of Egypt.

  154. And then he presses them.

  155. And as he continues to press them,

  156. they start to divulge more information

  157. about their family in order to gain Joseph's trust.

  158. And so they say in verse 10,

  159. know my Lord, your servants have come to buy food.

  160. We are all sons of one man.

  161. We are honest men.

  162. Your servants have never been spies.

  163. There's a lot of irony in those statements, right?

  164. So he says, we are all sons of one man,

  165. not knowing that even the man he is there speaking to

  166. is a son of one man.

  167. And then not just that, they're speaking,

  168. they say that they're honest men

  169. to the very brother that they sold into slavery, right?

  170. So you can see the irony.

  171. Joseph is watching them.

  172. They're claiming to be honest men,

  173. sons of all one man.

  174. They continue in verse 13.

  175. We, your servants, are 12 brothers,

  176. the sons of one man in the land of Canaan.

  177. And behold, the youngest is this day with our father,

  178. and one is no more.

  179. Quite the vague euphemism.

  180. One is no more.

  181. When the reality is that they themselves heartlessly

  182. and callously sold him into slavery, right?

  183. And so after, at this point,

  184. Jacob has learned that he has another brother

  185. because Benjamin was born after he was sold into slavery.

  186. So he presses them further to get more information

  187. about his family in verses 15 to 16.

  188. By this, you shall be tested.

  189. By the life of Pharaoh,

  190. you shall not go from this place

  191. unless your youngest brother comes here.

  192. Send one of you and let him bring your brother

  193. while you remain confined,

  194. that your words may be tested,

  195. whether there is truth in you or else.

  196. By the life of Pharaoh,

  197. surely you are spies.

  198. After saying this,

  199. Joseph puts them in prison for three days.

  200. And this too is evidence of the justice, right?

  201. Joseph was formerly imprisoned

  202. on account of his brothers selling him into slavery.

  203. And now they are imprisoned on account of Joseph.

  204. In fact, the word that is translated in verse 17

  205. as he put them all together in custody,

  206. that is a word play on Joseph's name.

  207. It looks and sounds exactly like the name Joseph.

  208. So basically, Joseph is Josephing his brothers.

  209. He's treating them like the way they treated Joseph previously.

  210. Now, during their imprisonment,

  211. Joseph revises his plan.

  212. And we don't know why exactly,

  213. but maybe he realizes,

  214. well, if only one of them goes back,

  215. I mean, he's not gonna be able

  216. to take much food back to his family.

  217. Maybe they won't survive.

  218. Okay, maybe it's better to keep one back

  219. and send the rest of them home.

  220. We don't know what's his thinking.

  221. But he revises his plan.

  222. He decides to leave one brother with him

  223. and to send everyone back to grab Benjamin.

  224. And Joseph's brothers know that God

  225. is bringing them to account

  226. for what they did to Joseph

  227. as all this is happening.

  228. Because they say in verse 21,

  229. in truth, we are guilty concerning our brother

  230. in that we saw the distress of his soul

  231. when he begged us and we did not listen.

  232. This is why this distress has come upon us.

  233. They caused Joseph distress.

  234. And now the same distress has come upon them.

  235. And then Reuben tries to justify himself

  236. in this situation to his brothers.

  237. He says, did I not tell you not to sin against the boy?

  238. But you did not listen.

  239. And so now there comes a reckoning for his blood.

  240. So Joseph overhears this, the narrator tells us.

  241. And even though he has a translator between them,

  242. obviously the brothers think that he's understanding

  243. through a translator,

  244. but he doesn't need a translator.

  245. So he understands what they're saying.

  246. And so at this point,

  247. he learns that his oldest brother, Reuben,

  248. was not complicit in their plan

  249. to sell him, to kill him, right?

  250. Or initially to kill him,

  251. and then later to sell him into Egypt.

  252. And so maybe that's why Joseph has some compassion

  253. on his oldest brother, Reuben.

  254. But he decides to hold Simeon in prison.

  255. Simeon is the second oldest brother instead of Reuben.

  256. And then he sends them back home.

  257. And this may also be just kind of ironic,

  258. divine retribution.

  259. Because now, because Benjamin, right,

  260. the second son of Rachel,

  261. is held by Jacob,

  262. and he wants him to bring him back.

  263. So in exchange for Benjamin,

  264. he's now holding on to the second son of Leah.

  265. So there's a lot of just kind of retribution happening.

  266. Just Joseph, exactly the way they treated Joseph,

  267. mistreated Joseph,

  268. is happening to the brothers.

  269. And so they go back with additional provisions

  270. and probably out of compassion for his family,

  271. he returns all the money that they paid for the grain

  272. and puts them back into the sacks.

  273. And as they're going,

  274. they discover,

  275. one of the brothers discovered the money in the sack

  276. and they panic.

  277. They're like,

  278. oh no,

  279. my money is in the sack.

  280. So they're worried that basically

  281. when the Egyptians do their accounting later,

  282. they're going to realize

  283. that they didn't pay for the grain that they took.

  284. And then now,

  285. they're going to get in trouble later

  286. if they ever come across them again.

  287. And so,

  288. they say in verse 28,

  289. what is this that God has done to us?

  290. This is a recurring theme.

  291. As all these things are happening,

  292. we recognize that it's not people

  293. who are the ultimate agents,

  294. but God is doing these things.

  295. God is bringing the brothers of Joseph to account.

  296. But that's just the start

  297. because it gets worse.

  298. So they discovered the money in one sack

  299. and now they arrive

  300. and they tell Jacob,

  301. their father,

  302. all that has transpired up to this point.

  303. And then when they opened the rest of the sacks,

  304. they discover that the money is back

  305. in every single sack of grain.

  306. So that means they didn't get,

  307. they didn't pay any money for the grain

  308. that they just brought from Egypt.

  309. And then it says in verse 35,

  310. of chapter 42,

  311. and when they and their fathers

  312. saw their bundles of money,

  313. they were afraid.

  314. And then follow this.

  315. And what they say,

  316. what Jacob says in response,

  317. in verse 36,

  318. is shocking and highly suggestive.

  319. It says,

  320. you have bereaved me of my children.

  321. Joseph is no more.

  322. Simeon is no more.

  323. And now you would take Benjamin.

  324. All this has come against me.

  325. Right?

  326. So first,

  327. Jacob is blaming his sons

  328. for the loss of Joseph and Simeon.

  329. And if you have followed Joseph's story

  330. up to this point,

  331. well, maybe you can blame,

  332. you know,

  333. them for Simeon

  334. because perhaps they weren't persuasive enough

  335. with Joseph or something like that.

  336. But really,

  337. it's not their fault.

  338. Right?

  339. And then secondly,

  340. Joseph,

  341. according to the theory,

  342. according to the lie

  343. that they sold to their father,

  344. right,

  345. Joseph was devoured by wild beasts.

  346. Right?

  347. So if Joseph was devoured by wild beasts,

  348. they're not to blame.

  349. So when Jacob says here,

  350. you have bereaved me,

  351. my children,

  352. he's suggesting something

  353. that perhaps it was not up to no one.

  354. So this is,

  355. a lot of commentators note this,

  356. but it may be that first time

  357. they sold Joseph into slavery.

  358. Obviously,

  359. they had a lot of money.

  360. It says that they sold them

  361. for 20 shekels of silver,

  362. which is about two years worth of wages.

  363. So think about how much you earn in two years.

  364. And all of a sudden,

  365. one day,

  366. they have that money.

  367. And perhaps the father notices some of that

  368. and starts to harbor some suspicions.

  369. Okay,

  370. what happened to Joseph?

  371. What really happened?

  372. Where did all this disposable income come from?

  373. We don't know what he did,

  374. but he probably pushed the suspicion

  375. to the back of his mind,

  376. thinking,

  377. oh,

  378. that's just unthinkable.

  379. There's no way that happened.

  380. But then,

  381. now Simeon is lost,

  382. and then they come,

  383. and the Simeon is gone,

  384. and they open the sacks,

  385. and all the money

  386. that he gave them

  387. to get the grain is there.

  388. There's Simeon.

  389. There's money.

  390. Again,

  391. and he's,

  392. so that,

  393. at least,

  394. it would be very rash,

  395. reasonable for him

  396. to suspect them

  397. of doing something unthinkable.

  398. So he says,

  399. you have bereaved me.

  400. He doesn't say,

  401. you have all been bereaved.

  402. No,

  403. you have bereaved me

  404. of my children.

  405. You have,

  406. Joseph is no more,

  407. Simeon is no more,

  408. and now you would take Benjamin.

  409. All this has come against me.

  410. Now,

  411. that explains the,

  412. the overzealous response

  413. of Reuben

  414. in the following verse,

  415. because he says in verse 17,

  416. verse 37,

  417. kill my two sons

  418. if I do not bring him back to you.

  419. Put him in my hands,

  420. and I will bring him back to you.

  421. But Jacob does not confide in Reuben,

  422. and he replies in verse 38,

  423. my son shall not go down with you,

  424. for his brother is dead,

  425. and he is the only one left.

  426. If harm should happen to him

  427. down on the journey

  428. that you are to make,

  429. you would bring down

  430. my gray hairs

  431. with sorrow to Sheol.

  432. Now,

  433. this is a statement

  434. because Jacob is saying,

  435. in effect,

  436. I don't know about your sons,

  437. but my son surely

  438. isn't going down with you,

  439. right?

  440. And he's,

  441. and also look at how,

  442. what he says,

  443. Jacob refers to Joseph

  444. as his brother,

  445. meaning Benjamin's brother,

  446. not your brother

  447. or their brother,

  448. right?

  449. And he also says,

  450. he is the only one left,

  451. as if the other 10 sons of Leah

  452. are not even his sons,

  453. right?

  454. He's the only one I have left.

  455. There's so much brokenness

  456. in this family.

  457. And Jacob is virtually renouncing

  458. his 10 sons of Leah

  459. as less than sons,

  460. and doubling down

  461. on his favoritism

  462. of Rachel's sons,

  463. of Benjamin now.

  464. And so even though

  465. the brothers

  466. sold Joseph initially

  467. in order to gain

  468. the favor of their father

  469. by getting rid of

  470. the favorite one,

  471. they're back to square one,

  472. exactly the same place

  473. where they began.

  474. Now Benjamin has taken

  475. that mantle

  476. of Jacob's favorite child.

  477. And in fact,

  478. the words that he uses

  479. to describe

  480. what would happen to him

  481. should he lose Benjamin

  482. is almost identical

  483. to what he said

  484. when he lost Joseph.

  485. You'll bring down

  486. my gray hair

  487. in sorrow to shield.

  488. So at this point,

  489. we are seeing,

  490. in the following chapter,

  491. we're going to see

  492. even more,

  493. but even in the midst

  494. of Joseph's brother's

  495. sin and suffering,

  496. God is working something here.

  497. He's working out

  498. his sovereign plan

  499. and we're going to see

  500. that in the following chapters.

  501. Look at chapter 43.

  502. Now some time has passed

  503. and it seems that

  504. at least some of the tension

  505. and suspicion

  506. that was there

  507. between Jacob

  508. and his 10 sons

  509. has been diffused

  510. because now they're hungry again

  511. and they need food,

  512. right?

  513. So Jacob once again

  514. tells him to go buy some food

  515. and then Judah reminds him

  516. emphatically,

  517. father,

  518. it's not happening

  519. unless we take Benjamin with him.

  520. The man told us so.

  521. And so we have seen

  522. since chapter 37,

  523. so basically that's when

  524. Reuben,

  525. the firstborn of Jacob,

  526. tried to usurp

  527. his father's authority

  528. by sleeping with

  529. his father's concubine.

  530. Now ever since then,

  531. he's kind of lost

  532. his kind of status,

  533. his favor with his father

  534. as firstborn.

  535. And then after that,

  536. the second and third sons,

  537. Simeon and Levi,

  538. also lost their favorite status

  539. with the father

  540. by raiding and ransacking

  541. the town of Shechem.

  542. And so you see that later

  543. when Jacob blesses his sons

  544. on his deathbed.

  545. So he kind of,

  546. he passes over,

  547. I mean he blesses them

  548. but it's kind of a curse

  549. for Reuben,

  550. Simeon and Levi.

  551. And so that's,

  552. so now you see increasingly

  553. Judah,

  554. the fourth son,

  555. taking the mantle of leadership

  556. and that's what we see here.

  557. So Judah starts to represent

  558. his brothers and then now,

  559. now he says in verses

  560. eight to 10 of chapter 43,

  561. send a boy with me

  562. and we will arise and go

  563. that we may live and not die.

  564. Both we and you

  565. and also our little ones.

  566. I will be a pledge of his safety

  567. from my hand,

  568. you shall require him

  569. if I do not bring him back to you

  570. and set him before you.

  571. Then let me bear the blame forever.

  572. If we had not delayed,

  573. we will now have returned twice.

  574. So Judah is,

  575. is more persuasive than Reuben

  576. and Judah,

  577. I mean Jacob trusts him

  578. more than Reuben

  579. and recognizing that

  580. the alternative really is

  581. death by starvation,

  582. he says to himself

  583. in chapter 43 verse 14,

  584. if I am bereaved of my children,

  585. I am bereaved.

  586. And he says,

  587. go take Benjamin

  588. and go back to Egypt.

  589. And not just,

  590. he doesn't just send them to Egypt

  591. with the money to buy the grain,

  592. he sends them also

  593. with the choice fruits of the land

  594. in order to basically gain

  595. the ruler of Egypt's favor.

  596. And he also sends them

  597. with double the money.

  598. And this is so interesting,

  599. what Jacob says,

  600. he says,

  601. perhaps it was an oversight.

  602. Perhaps.

  603. He's not convinced

  604. that it was an oversight.

  605. Perhaps it was an oversight.

  606. So he says in verse 12,

  607. and he sends them all back.

  608. Now, man,

  609. this is such a gripping story.

  610. I hope you guys,

  611. we didn't get to read the full thing.

  612. I hope you guys get to read it at home.

  613. But basically,

  614. when they arrive,

  615. they receive an exceedingly warm welcome

  616. from Joseph.

  617. And they are taken into Joseph's house

  618. for a luncheon.

  619. But a guilty conscience

  620. doesn't sit well

  621. with kind dealings.

  622. And so automatically,

  623. they start to suspect,

  624. oh no,

  625. they're going to try to ambush us

  626. and then enslave us.

  627. So they go up to the steward

  628. preemptively and say,

  629. hey,

  630. remember last time,

  631. the money?

  632. Like,

  633. we didn't do that.

  634. We didn't take the money.

  635. And we brought all the money back.

  636. And then the steward tells them

  637. in verse 23,

  638. peace to you.

  639. Do not be afraid.

  640. Your God

  641. and the God of your father

  642. has put treasure in your sacks for you.

  643. I received your money.

  644. Now,

  645. whether knowingly or unknowingly,

  646. Joseph's steward expresses the truth

  647. that really kind of main point

  648. throughout this passage,

  649. that God is sovereignly working

  650. in and through all human activity,

  651. including Joseph instructing his servants

  652. to put the money back in their sacks.

  653. So in this scene,

  654. we see Joseph's particular affection

  655. for his full brother,

  656. Benjamin.

  657. Read very emotional verses here.

  658. Verses 29 to 30.

  659. Please read that with me.

  660. It says,

  661. Lifted up his eyes

  662. and saw his brother,

  663. Benjamin,

  664. his mother's son,

  665. and said,

  666. is this your youngest brother

  667. of whom you spoke to me?

  668. God be gracious to you,

  669. my son.

  670. Then Joseph hurried out

  671. for his compassion,

  672. grew warm for his brother,

  673. and he sought a place to weep,

  674. and he entered his chamber

  675. and wept there.

  676. In describing this entire second visit

  677. of Joseph's brothers,

  678. the narrator has intentionally

  679. not used any relational terms.

  680. So Joseph, up to this point,

  681. has always been called the man,

  682. and Joseph's brothers

  683. have always been called the men.

  684. It's not very creative,

  685. but then this is the first time

  686. where it says,

  687. Benjamin is his brother,

  688. and his mother's son.

  689. Relational terms are used

  690. to convey exceeding affection

  691. that Joseph has for Benjamin.

  692. So he goes out to weep,

  693. and he returns,

  694. having composed himself.

  695. But after the feast,

  696. his test is not done.

  697. Joseph initiates the final part

  698. of his test of his brothers,

  699. and then he commands his steward

  700. in verses 1 to 2 of chapter 44.

  701. We're in chapter 44 now,

  702. verses 1 to 2.

  703. Fill the men's sacks with food,

  704. as much as they can carry,

  705. and put each man's money

  706. in the mouth of his sack,

  707. and put my cup,

  708. the silver cup,

  709. in the mouth of the sack

  710. of the youngest,

  711. with his money for the grain.

  712. Now, at this point in the narrative,

  713. we don't know what Joseph is up to.

  714. All we know,

  715. he could be just pretty generous,

  716. like he was the first time,

  717. just giving them the money back,

  718. and then because he loves Benjamin,

  719. giving him his special silver cup.

  720. But then we see what he's doing later

  721. in verses 4 to 5,

  722. because he instructs his steward further.

  723. Up, follow after the men,

  724. and when you overtake them,

  725. say to them,

  726. why have you repaid evil for good?

  727. Is it not from this that my Lord drinks,

  728. and by this that he practices divination?

  729. You have done evil in doing this.

  730. So when the servant catches up

  731. to Joseph's brothers,

  732. and then the servant interrogates them,

  733. the brothers are so certain

  734. of their innocence,

  735. they say this in verse 9,

  736. whichever of your servants

  737. is found with it shall die,

  738. and we also will be my Lord's servants.

  739. But the steward is working

  740. on Joseph's instructions,

  741. so he's not really interested

  742. in the rest of the brothers.

  743. So he just says,

  744. no, verse 10,

  745. he was found with it shall be my servant,

  746. and the rest of you shall be innocent.

  747. So he takes their suggestion

  748. of making a servant,

  749. but he doesn't accept their suggestion

  750. of making them all servants.

  751. So it's a much more lenient punishment,

  752. but of course,

  753. the steward already knows

  754. where that silver cup is,

  755. and the tension in the narrative builds

  756. as they check one sack at a time,

  757. starting from the eldest

  758. to the youngest,

  759. and then finally,

  760. they come to Benjamin's sack,

  761. and then they open it,

  762. and the cup is found

  763. in Benjamin's sack.

  764. Now, this is a brilliant test

  765. that Joseph has designed, right?

  766. Because what happened, right?

  767. The first time his brother

  768. sold him into slavery, right?

  769. They abandoned him callously

  770. to the Egyptians to be a slave there,

  771. and then they left.

  772. And the test is this.

  773. Now, you're going to have to decide.

  774. Now, the other son of Rachel,

  775. Benjamin,

  776. is about to be enslaved in Egypt.

  777. Will you do the same thing

  778. you did to me

  779. and abandon him and go home?

  780. Right?

  781. That's the test.

  782. And so now,

  783. the test is set,

  784. and then we get to see

  785. the response.

  786. And this is,

  787. and the brother's response

  788. is so telling.

  789. I mean,

  790. they've been living

  791. with gnawing guilt

  792. for the last 20,

  793. 22 years.

  794. I mean,

  795. it's in the back.

  796. It's bothering their conscience.

  797. They sense it

  798. in all their dealings

  799. with their father.

  800. And then so,

  801. Judah and the brothers,

  802. they say this.

  803. God has found out

  804. the guilt of your servant.

  805. Now,

  806. they're not referring

  807. to the guilt

  808. of stealing the cup

  809. because they didn't steal the cup.

  810. They're saying God has found

  811. out the guilt

  812. of selling Joseph

  813. into slavery.

  814. And that's exactly

  815. what God is doing.

  816. He's finding out their guilt,

  817. bringing them to account,

  818. and he's forcing

  819. Joseph's brothers

  820. to reckon with their sin

  821. and to repent of it

  822. so that they can be reconciled

  823. to one another.

  824. Right?

  825. So in the midst

  826. of all their sin

  827. and suffering,

  828. God is working out

  829. his sovereign purposes.

  830. And we see what he's doing

  831. in the following years.

  832. Right?

  833. So 22 years

  834. of unconfessed sin,

  835. right,

  836. that they've been dealing

  837. with is finally coming

  838. to a climax here.

  839. So Judah's speech

  840. in chapter 44,

  841. 18 to 34,

  842. is one of the most

  843. beautiful,

  844. eloquent,

  845. and impassioned speeches

  846. in all of Hebrew literature

  847. and all of the Bible.

  848. Now,

  849. it's really a point-for-point

  850. undoing

  851. of their earlier violation

  852. of that paternal

  853. and fraternal loyalty

  854. and love.

  855. So I'm going to read it

  856. in full

  857. because it's worth reading.

  858. Verse 18 to 34,

  859. please read it with me.

  860. Chapter 44,

  861. verses 18 to 34.

  862. Oh my Lord,

  863. please let your servant

  864. speak a word

  865. in my Lord's ears

  866. and let not your anger

  867. burn against your servant,

  868. for you are like Pharaoh himself.

  869. My Lord asked his servant,

  870. saying,

  871. have you a father

  872. or a brother?

  873. And we said to my Lord,

  874. we have a father,

  875. an old man,

  876. and a young brother,

  877. the child of his old age.

  878. His brother is dead,

  879. and he alone is left

  880. of his mother's children,

  881. and his father loves him.

  882. Then you said to your servant,

  883. bring him down to me

  884. that I may,

  885. and I set my eyes on him.

  886. We said to my Lord,

  887. the boy cannot leave his father,

  888. for if he should leave his father,

  889. his father would die.

  890. Then you said to your servants,

  891. unless your youngest brother

  892. comes down with you,

  893. you shall not see my face again.

  894. When we went back

  895. to your servant,

  896. my father,

  897. we told him the words of my Lord,

  898. and when our father said,

  899. go again,

  900. buy us a little food,

  901. we said,

  902. we cannot go down.

  903. If our youngest brother

  904. goes with us,

  905. then we will go down,

  906. for we cannot see the man's face

  907. unless our youngest brother

  908. is with us.

  909. Then your servant,

  910. my father,

  911. said to us,

  912. you know that my wife

  913. bore me two sons.

  914. One left me,

  915. and I said,

  916. surely he has been torn to pieces,

  917. and I have never seen him since.

  918. If you take this one also from me,

  919. and harm happens to him,

  920. you will bring down my gray hairs

  921. and my evil to shield.

  922. Now therefore,

  923. as soon as I come to your servant,

  924. my father,

  925. and the boy is not with us,

  926. then as his life is bound up

  927. in the boy's life,

  928. as soon as he sees

  929. that the boy is not with us,

  930. he will die,

  931. and your servants

  932. will bring down

  933. the gray hairs

  934. of your servant,

  935. our father,

  936. with sorrow to shield.

  937. For your servant

  938. became a pledge of safety

  939. for the boy

  940. to my father,

  941. saying,

  942. if I do not bring him

  943. back to you,

  944. then I shall bear the blame

  945. before my father

  946. all my life.

  947. Now therefore,

  948. please,

  949. let your servant remain

  950. instead of the boy

  951. as a servant

  952. to my Lord,

  953. and let the boy

  954. go back

  955. with his brothers.

  956. For how can I go back

  957. to my father

  958. if the boy

  959. is not with me?

  960. I fear

  961. to see the evil

  962. that would find

  963. my father.

  964. Oh,

  965. it's...

  966. Judah

  967. now really

  968. understands

  969. what it means

  970. that his

  971. aged father's

  972. life is bound up

  973. with the life

  974. of Benjamin.

  975. Right?

  976. And he states

  977. very plainly,

  978. right,

  979. that Benjamin

  980. is his favorite,

  981. that Jacob

  982. has singled them out

  983. for special affection,

  984. just as he had

  985. previously done

  986. with Joseph.

  987. And this

  988. is a remarkable

  989. admission

  990. if you think about it,

  991. right?

  992. I mean,

  993. that's a very tough

  994. pill to swallow

  995. for Judah

  996. and the rest

  997. of the brothers,

  998. right,

  999. the ten brothers,

  1000. the sons of Leah.

  1001. That means

  1002. because that's...

  1003. Jacob is not

  1004. truly treating them

  1005. like sons,

  1006. acknowledging them

  1007. as full sons.

  1008. Right?

  1009. It's a painful reality

  1010. for them to admit.

  1011. In fact,

  1012. that was what

  1013. aroused their jealousy

  1014. in the first place

1015. to get rid of Joseph.

  1016. But now,

  1017. that same favoritism

  1018. that had previously

  1019. led them

  1020. to sell Joseph

  1021. into slavery,

  1022. that same favoritism

  1023. is the reason

  1024. that Judah gives

  1025. for cherishing

  1026. and protecting

  1027. their younger brother,

  1028. Benjamin.

  1029. Do you guys see

  1030. what's the change

  1031. that has taken place

1032. in Judah and his brothers?

  1033. Before,

  1034. they said,

  1035. you know what?

  1036. Jacob just loves him.

  1037. Well,

1038. let's get rid of Joseph.

1039. Let's get rid of him.

  1040. Now,

  1041. because Jacob loves Benjamin

1042. and with a special affection,

  1043. they say,

  1044. we cannot afford

  1045. to do the same.

  1046. Take me instead

1047. and make me your slave

  1048. so that Benjamin

  1049. can go home

1050. to be with his father.

  1051. And the word father

  1052. is mentioned 14 times

  1053. in the Hebrew

1054. in this speech of Judah.

  1055. My father,

  1056. my father,

  1057. that's his obsession.

  1058. That's his primary

  1059. overriding concern.

  1060. I cannot,

  1061. again,

  1062. bring such grief

  1063. to my father.

  1064. Right?

  1065. So that earlier violation

  1066. of that paternal bond

  1067. by selling Joseph

  1068. into slavery

  1069. is now being reversed

  1070. and they're showing

  1071. great and extraordinarily

  1072. affection,

  1073. loyalty

  1074. to their father.

  1075. And so through

  1076. Judah's speech,

  1077. Joseph learns

  1078. many things.

  1079. One,

  1080. he learns that

  1081. his father

  1082. had thought

  1083. that he was torn

  1084. to pieces

  1085. by a wild beast.

  1086. And then second,

  1087. he learns

  1088. what consternation

  1089. he must have caused

  1090. by withholding Simeon

  1091. and demanding

  1092. that they bring Benjamin.

  1093. And then third,

  1094. he sees that

  1095. a true repentance

  1096. and transformation

  1097. has taken place

  1098. in the life

  1099. of his brothers.

  1100. Now they really care

  1101. for even Rachel's son,

  1102. even the son

  1103. that on account

  1104. of whom

  1105. they are

  1106. in a way

  1107. disinherited

  1108. and disregarded.

  1109. And so that

  1110. breaks down

  1111. Joseph's last defenses

  1112. and it says

  1113. in chapter 45

  1114. verses 1 to 3,

  1115. Then Joseph

  1116. could not

  1117. control himself

  1118. before all those

  1119. who stood by him.

  1120. He cried,

  1121. Make everyone

  1122. go out for me.

  1123. So no one

  1124. stayed with him

  1125. when Joseph

  1126. made himself

  1127. known to his brothers

  1128. and he wept

  1129. aloud

  1130. so that the Egyptians

  1131. heard it

  1132. and the household

  1133. of Pharaoh

  1134. heard it.

  1135. And Joseph

  1136. said to his brothers,

  1137. I am Joseph.

  1138. Is my father

  1139. still alive?

  1140. But his brothers

  1141. could not answer him

  1142. for they were

  1143. dismayed at his presence.

  1144. So Joseph

  1145. then comforts

  1146. and reassures

  1147. his dismayed brothers

  1148. and then in verses

  1149. 14 to 15

  1150. he says,

  1151. Then he fell

  1152. upon his brother

  1153. Benjamin's neck

  1154. and wept

  1155. and Benjamin

  1156. wept upon his neck

  1157. and he kissed

  1158. all his brothers

  1159. and wept upon them.

  1160. After that,

  1161. his brothers

  1162. talked with him.

  1163. After 22 years

  1164. of not talking

  1165. to one another

  1166. as brothers.

  1167. Now they talk

  1168. once again

  1169. to each other

  1170. as brothers.

  1171. as sons

  1172. of the same

  1173. father.

  1174. God has

  1175. sovereignly

  1176. worked

  1177. reconciliation

  1178. in Jacob's

  1179. family

  1180. even through

  1181. all their sin

  1182. and suffering.

  1183. In a group

  1184. this large

  1185. the chances are

  1186. that there's

  1187. at least

  1188. some of you

  1189. who have

  1190. a painful

  1191. secret

  1192. that you have

  1193. been keeping

  1194. from others

  1195. like Joseph's

  1196. brothers.

  1197. Maybe there's

  1198. a sin

  1199. that you keep

  1200. hidden

  1201. and refuse

  1202. to confess

  1203. through shame

  1204. and guilt.

  1205. Maybe

  1206. you aborted

  1207. a baby

  1208. from an

  1209. unwanted

  1210. pregnancy.

  1211. Maybe

  1212. you visited

  1213. sex parlors

  1214. or watched

  1215. pornography

  1216. in the seclusion

  1217. of your mobile

  1218. device.

  1219. Maybe you

  1220. cross-dress

  1221. in secret

  1222. and fantasize

  1223. about sexual

  1224. engagements

  1225. that God

  1226. forbids.

  1227. Maybe you

  1228. have a persistent

  1229. image issue

  1230. and you engage

  1231. in binge eating

  1232. and purging.

  1233. maybe you

  1234. have severe

  1235. depressive

  1236. and suicidal

  1237. thoughts

  1238. and you're

  1239. cutting yourself.

  1240. Whatever

  1241. it might

  1242. be

  1243. I'm here

  1244. to tell you

  1245. on the

  1246. authority

  1247. of God's

  1248. word

  1249. that you

  1250. can be

  1251. healed

  1252. and forgiven

  1253. and free.

  1254. We see

  1255. that in the

  1256. life of

  1257. Joseph's

  1258. brothers.

  1259. God

  1260. worked out

  1261. his sovereign

  1262. plan

  1263. even through

  1264. their sin

  1265. and he

  1266. brought healing

  1267. and reconciliation

  1268. to their

  1269. family.

  1270. It's never

  1271. too late

  1272. to come

  1273. clean

  1274. before God.

  1275. You are

  1276. never

  1277. beyond

  1278. redemption

  1279. because

  1280. our

  1281. redeemer

  1282. is the

  1283. almighty

  1284. Lord

  1285. himself.

  1286. So

  1287. James 5

  1288. 16

  1289. exhorts

  1290. therefore

  1291. confess

  1292. your sins

  1293. to one

  1294. another

  1295. and pray

  1296. for one

  1297. another

  1298. that you

  1299. may be

  1300. healed.

  1301. Unconfessed

  1302. sins will

  1303. eat away

  1304. at your

  1305. soul

  1306. and a

  1307. guilty

  1308. conscience

  1309. will never

  1310. stop

  1311. nagging

  1312. you.

  1313. And

  1314. together

  1315. they

  1316. lead

  1317. to

  1318. alienation

  1319. from

  1320. God

  1321. separation

  1322. from

  1323. him.

  1324. Come

  1325. clean

  1326. before

  1327. him

  1328. today.

  1329. In

  1330. this

  1331. story

  1332. Judah

  1333. only

  1334. offered

  1335. himself

  1336. as

  1337. substitute

  1338. but

  1339. as

  1340. Christians

  1341. as

  1342. God's

  1343. people

  1344. we

  1345. know

  1346. that

  1347. God

  1348. that

  1349. Jesus

  1350. Christ

  1351. our

  1352. true

  1353. elder

  1354. brother

  1355. actually

  1356. offered

  1357. himself

  1358. as

  1359. a

  1360. substitute

  1361. for

  1362. our

  1363. sins

  1364. and

  1365. wrongdoings.

  1366. Jesus

  1367. died

  1368. in

  1369. our

  1370. place

  1371. so that

  1372. we

  1373. can

  1374. be

  1375. forgiven

  1376. of

  1377. our

  1378. sins

  1379. and

  1380. that's

  1381. why

  1382. we

  1383. can

  1384. come

  1385. to

  1386. him

  1387. that's

  1388. what we

  1389. call

  1390. the

  1391. good

  1392. news

  1393. of

  1394. Jesus

  1395. and

  1396. if

  1397. you're

  1398. already

  1399. a

  1400. believer

  1401. then

  1402. we

  1403. are

  1404. forgiven

  1405. sinners

  1406. right

  1407. what the

  1408. Bible

  1409. calls

  1410. saints

  1411. and

  1412. this

  1413. passage

  1414. illustrates

  1415. for us

  1416. the

  1417. importance

  1418. of

  1419. reconciliation

  1420. in

  1421. God's

  1422. family

  1423. because

  1424. the

  1425. reason

  1426. why

  1427. and

  1428. the

  1429. reason

  1430. reconciliation

  1431. was made

  1432. possible

  1433. in

  1434. Jacob's

  1435. family

  1436. right

  1437. is

  1438. Judah's

  1439. brothers

  1440. right

  1441. instead

  1442. of

  1443. making

  1444. right

  1445. their

  1446. personal

  1447. grievance

  1448. the

  1449. point

  1450. at

  1451. which

  1452. they

  1453. relate

  1454. to

  1455. their

  1456. brother

  1457. Joseph

  1458. and

  1459. Benjamin

  1460. it's

  1461. because

  1462. of

  1463. them

  1464. now

  1465. I'm

  1466. I don't

  1467. have

  1468. the

  1469. favor

  1470. of

  1471. the

  1472. father

  1473. instead

  1474. of

  1475. relating

  1476. to

  1477. them

  1478. in

  1479. that

  1480. way

  1481. they

  1482. turn

  1483. that

  1484. around

  1485. and

  1486. relate

  1487. to

  1488. them

  1489. on

  1490. account

  1491. of

  1492. the

  1493. father's

  1494. love

  1495. for

  1496. them

  1497. no

  1498. my

  1499. father

  1500. Jacob

  1501. really

  1502. loves

  1503. them

  1504. and

  1505. cherishes

  1506. them

  1507. that's

  1508. why

  1509. I need

  1510. to

  1511. cherish

  1512. them

  1513. and

  1514. love

  1515. them

  1516. that's

  1517. why

  1518. reconciliation

  1519. is

  1520. made

  1521. possible

  1522. in

  1523. the

  1524. same

  1525. way

  1526. in

  1527. the

  1528. family

  1529. of

  1530. God

  1531. we

  1532. are

  1533. diverse

  1534. and

  1535. God

  1536. intended

  1537. it

  1538. to be

  1539. so

  1540. he

  1541. designed

  1542. us

  1543. so

  1544. that

  1545. we're

  1546. interdependent

  1547. and

  1548. not

  1549. independent

  1550. and

  1551. that

  1552. experiences

  1553. that

  1554. make

  1555. us

  1556. need

  1557. each

  1558. other

  1559. but

  1560. when

  1561. that

  1562. happens

  1563. and

  1564. we're

  1565. also

  1566. still

  1567. sinners

  1568. we

  1569. sin

  1570. and

  1571. therefore

  1572. we're

  1573. going

  1574. to

  1575. offend

  1576. each

  1577. other

  1578. but

  1579. when

  1580. that

  1581. happens

  1582. we

  1583. can

  1584. be

  1585. reconciled

  1586. to

  1587. one

  1588. another

  1589. and

  1590. have

  1591. unity

  1592. in

  1593. the

  1594. family

  1595. of

  1596. God

  1597. by

  1598. not

  1599. relating

  1600. to

  1601. one

  1602. another

  1603. on

  1604. account

  1605. of

  1606. personal

  1607. grievances

  1608. they

  1609. did

  1610. this

  1611. to

  1612. me

  1613. it's

  1614. because

  1615. of

  1616. this

  1617. they

  1618. do

  1619. these

  1620. things

  1621. that

  1622. I

  1623. don't

  1624. relate

  1625. to

  1626. each

  1627. other

  1628. on

  1629. those

  1630. basis

  1631. but

  1632. relate

  1633. to

  1634. each

  1635. other

  1636. on

  1637. the

  1638. basis

  1639. that

  1640. we

  1641. have

  1642. the

  1643. same

  1644. father

  1645. and

  1646. the

  1647. father

  1648. loves

  1649. them

  1650. loves

  1651. all

  1652. of

  1653. us

  1654. that's

  1655. what

  1656. brings

  1657. us

  1658. together

  1659. and

  1660. reconciles

  1661. us

  1662. in

  1663. the

  1664. family

  1665. of

  1666. God

  1667. it's

  1668. because

  1669. we have

  1670. aligned

  1671. ourselves

  1672. with

  1673. him

  1674. that

  1675. we

  1676. can

  1677. be

  1678. aligned

  1679. with

  1680. one

  1681. another

  1682. and

  1683. so

  1684. God

  1685. in

  1686. the

  1687. midst

  1688. of

  1689. the

  1690. brothers

  1691. Judas

  1692. sin

  1693. and

  1694. suffering

  1695. works

  1696. out

  1697. his

  1698. sovereign

  1699. plan

  1700. and

  1701. that's

  1702. the

  1703. first

  1704. point

  1705. it's

  1706. also

  1707. the

  1708. longest

  1709. point

  1710. so

  1711. stick

  1712. with

  1713. me

  1714. yeah

  1715. and

  1716. the

  1717. second

  1718. we

  1719. see

  1720. the

  1721. same

  1722. truth

  1723. displayed

  1724. in

  1725. the

  1726. life

  1727. of

  1728. Joseph

  1729. right

  1730. we

  1731. can

  1732. trust

  1733. in

  1734. God

  1735. in

  1736. the

  1737. midst

  1738. of

  1739. sin

  1740. and

  1741. suffering

  1742. because

  1743. God's

  1744. sovereign

  1745. plan

  1746. prevails

  1747. through

  1748. it

  1749. all

  1750. look

  1751. with

  1752. me

  1753. if you

  1754. turn

  1755. with

  1756. me

  1757. to

  1758. 41

  1759. chapter

  1760. 40

  1761. and

  1762. verse

  1763. 32

  1764. there

  1765. Joseph

  1766. had

  1767. said

  1768. something

  1769. very

  1770. interesting

  1771. to

  1772. Pharaoh

  1773. because

  1774. he's

  1775. interpreting

  1776. Pharaoh's

  1777. two

  1778. dreams

  1779. and

  1780. he

  1781. says

  1782. that

  1783. the

  1784. two

  1785. dreams

  1786. actually

  1787. have

  1788. the

  1789. same

  1790. meaning

  1791. and

  1792. as

  1793. he

  1794. interprets

  1795. it

  1796. for

  1797. Pharaoh

  1798. he

  1799. says

  1800. this

  1801. the

  1802. doubling

  1803. of

  1804. Pharaoh's

  1805. dreams

  1806. means

  1807. that

  1808. the

  1809. thing

  1810. is

  1811. fixed

  1812. by

  1813. God

  1814. and

  1815. God

  1816. will

  1817. shortly

  1818. bring

  1819. it

  1820. about

  1821. now

  1822. that's

  1823. in there

  1824. as a

  1825. clue

  1826. for

  1827. the

  1828. readers

  1829. because

  1830. where

  1831. was

  1832. another

  1833. occasion

  1834. when

  1835. there

  1836. were

  1837. two

  1838. dreams

  1839. a

  1840. doubling

  1841. of

  1842. dreams

  1843. Joseph's

  1844. dreams

  1845. Joseph

  1846. had

  1847. two

  1848. dreams

  1849. they

  1850. weren't

  1851. identical

  1852. but

  1853. they

  1854. were

  1855. referring

  1856. to

  1857. the

  1858. same

  1859. thing

  1860. that

  1861. his

  1862. brothers

  1863. his

  1864. family

  1865. will

  1866. bow

  1867. down

  1868. to

  1869. him

  1870. right

  1871. so

  1872. first

  1873. dream

  1874. he

  1875. had

  1876. he

  1877. had

  1878. eleven

  1879. of

  1880. his

  1881. brothers

  1882. bow

  1883. down

  1884. to

  1885. him

  1886. the

  1887. second

  1888. dream

  1889. he

  1890. had

  1891. the

  1892. sun

  1893. and

  1894. moon

  1895. and

  1896. all

  1897. the

  1898. stars

  1899. bowed

  1900. down

  1901. to

  1902. him

  1903. so

  1904. that's

  1905. a

  1906. sign

  1907. we're

  1908. wondering

  1909. then

  1910. at

  1911. this

  1912. point

  1913. well

  1914. Joseph's

  1915. dream

  1916. was

  1917. doubled

  1918. when

  1919. is

  1920. that

  1921. going

  1922. to

  1923. be

  1924. fulfilled

  1925. and

  1926. we're

  1927. following

  1928. that

  1929. narrative

  1930. as

  1931. we

  1932. go

  1933. in

  1934. chapter

  1935. 42

  1936. 6

  1937. it

  1938. was

  1939. noted

  1940. that

  1941. when

  1942. Joseph's

  1943. brothers

  1944. came

  1945. and bowed

  1946. themselves

  1947. before

  1948. him

  1949. with

  1950. their

  1951. faces

  1952. to

  1953. the

  1954. ground

  1955. in

  1956. verse

  1957. 9

  1958. it

  1959. says

  1960. Joseph

  1961. remembered

  1962. the

  1963. dreams

  1964. that

  1965. he

  1966. had

  1967. dreamed

  1968. of

  1969. them

  1970. now

  1971. that's

  1972. certainly

  1973. a

  1974. fulfillment

  1975. of

  1976. the

  1977. first

  1978. dream

  1979. had

  1980. 10

  1981. brothers

  1982. not

  1983. 11

  1984. but

  1985. it's

  1986. not

  1987. a

  1988. fulfillment

  1989. of

  1990. the

  1991. second

  1992. dream

  1993. because

  1994. he's

  1995. missing

  1996. his

  1997. last

  1998. brother

  1999. and

  2000. he's

  2001. also

  2002. missing

  2003. his

  2004. parents

  2005. so

  2006. then

  2007. we

  2008. still

  2009. hold

  2010. on

  2011. to

  2012. that

  2013. dream

  2014. in

  2015. their

  2016. second

  2017. visit

  2018. it

  2019. says

  2020. they

  2021. bowed

  2022. down

  2023. to

  2024. him

  2025. to

  2026. the

  2027. ground

  2028. again

  2029. fulfillment

  2030. of

  2031. the

  2032. dream

  2033. but

  2034. only

  2035. a

  2036. partial

  2037. fulfillment

  2038. this

  2039. time

  2040. all

  2041. the

  2042. brothers

  2043. are

  2044. there

  2045. but

  2046. still

  2047. no

  2048. parents

  2049. so

  2050. joseph's

  2051. dream

  2052. actually

  2053. is

  2054. not

  2055. fulfilled

  2056. until

  2057. 46

  2058. verses

  2059. 5

  2060. to

  2061. 7

  2062. where

  2063. it

  2064. says

  2065. jacob

  2066. set out

  2067. from

  2068. beersheba

  2069. the

  2070. sons

  2071. of

  2072. israel

  2073. carried

  2074. jacob

  2075. their

  2076. father

  2077. their

  2078. little

  2079. ones

  2080. and

  2081. their

  2082. wives

  2083. in

  2084. the

  2085. wagons

  2086. that

  2087. pharaoh

  2088. had

  2089. sent

  2090. to

  2091. carry

  2092. him

  2093. he

  2094. also

  2095. took

  2096. their

  2097. livestock

  2098. and

  2099. their

  2100. goods

  2101. which

  2102. they

  2103. gained

  2104. in

  2105. the

  2106. land

  2107. and

  2108. came

  2109. into

  2110. Egypt

  2111. so

  2112. according

  2113. to

  2114. genesis

  2115. 35

  2116. joseph's

  2117. biological

  2118. mother

  2119. rachel

  2120. passed

  2121. died

  2122. while

  2123. giving

  2124. birth

  2125. to

  2126. benjamin

  2127. so

  2128. the

  2129. dreams

  2130. fulfilled

  2131. not

  2132. in

  2133. rachel

  2134. but

  2135. in

  2136. jacob

  2137. and

  2138. leah

  2139. coming

  2140. with

  2141. the

  2142. 11

  2143. sons

  2144. to

  2145. bow

  2146. down

  2147. to

  2148. joseph

  2149. so

  2150. that

  2151. is

  2152. fulfilled

  2153. in

  2154. that

  2155. way

  2156. and

  2157. so

  2158. what

  2159. is

  2160. so

  2161. this

  2162. dream

  2163. took

  2164. a

  2165. long

  2166. time

  2167. right

  2168. I

  2169. mean

  2170. according

  2171. to

  2172. genesis

  2173. 37

  2174. 2

  2175. joseph

  2176. was

  2177. 17

  2178. years

  2179. and

  2180. if

  2181. you

  2182. do

  2183. some

  2184. math

  2185. and

  2186. follow

  2187. along

  2188. the

  2189. years

  2190. that

  2191. are

  2192. given

  2193. we

  2194. find

  2195. that

  2196. it's

  2197. been

  2198. 22

  2199. years

  2200. for

  2201. the

  2202. for

  2203. the

  2204. fulfillment

  2205. of

  2206. his

  2207. dreams

  2208. to

  2209. take

  2210. place

  2211. so

  2212. god's

  2213. timing

  2214. didn't

  2215. quite

  2216. align

  2217. with

  2218. joseph's

  2219. timing

  2220. right

  2221. and

  2222. joseph

  2223. in

  2224. the

  2225. midst

  2226. of

  2227. that

  2228. had

  2229. to

  2230. be

  2231. a

  2232. slave

  2233. at

  2234. pot

  2235. for

  2236. his

  2237. home

  2238. and

  2239. he

  2240. had

  2241. to

  2242. be

  2243. imprisoned

  2244. for

  2245. years

  2246. as

  2247. well

  2248. but

  2249. nevertheless

  2250. God

  2251. fulfilled

  2252. the

  2253. dream

  2254. he

  2255. gave

  2256. to

  2257. joseph

  2258. and

  2259. this

  2260. story

  2261. also

  2262. teaches

  2263. us

  2264. that

  2265. we

  2266. can

  2267. trust

  2268. in

  2269. god

  2270. hold

  2271. on

  2272. to

  2273. god

  2274. in

  2275. the

  2276. midst

  2277. of

  2278. sin

  2279. and

  2280. suffering

  2281. because

  2282. god's

  2283. sovereign

  2284. plan

  2285. prevailed

  2286. through

  2287. it

  2288. all

  2289. now

  2290. what

  2291. was

  2292. god's

  2293. sovereign

  2294. plan

  2295. in

  2296. joseph's

  2297. story

  2298. joseph

  2299. articulates

  2300. that

  2301. for

  2302. us

  2303. in

  2304. chapter

  2305. 45

  2306. verses

  2307. 4

  2308. to

  2309. 13

  2310. please

  2311. read

  2312. that

  2313. with

  2314. me

  2315. chapter

  2316. 45

  2317. verses

  2318. 4

  2319. to

  2320. 13

  2321. so

  2322. hurry

  2323. and

  2324. go

  2325. to

  2326. my

  2327. father

  2328. and

  2329. say

  2330. to

  2331. him

  2332. thus

  2333. says

  2334. your

  2335. son

  2336. joseph

  2337. god

  2338. has

  2339. made

  2340. me

  2341. lord

  2342. of

  2343. all

  2344. egypt

  2345. come

  2346. down

  2347. to

  2348. me

  2349. do

  2350. not

  2351. tarry

  2352. you

  2353. shall

  2354. dwell

  2355. in

  2356. the

  2357. land

  2358. of

  2359. goshen

  2360. and

  2361. you

  2362. shall

  2363. be

  2364. near

  2365. me

  2366. you

  2367. and

  2368. your

  2369. children

  2370. and

  2371. your

  2372. children's

  2373. children

  2374. and

  2375. your

  2376. flocks

  2377. your

  2378. herds

  2379. and

  2380. all

  2381. that

  2382. you

  2383. have

  2384. there

  2385. I

  2386. will

  2387. provide

  2388. for

  2389. you

  2390. for

  2391. there

  2392. now

  2393. four

  2394. times

  2395. joseph

  2396. repeats

  2397. that

  2398. god

  2399. was

  2400. the

  2401. driving

  2402. force

  2403. behind

  2404. all

  2405. the

  2406. faithful

  2407. events

  2408. of

  2409. his

  2410. life

  2411. right

  2412. so

  2413. this

  2414. is

  2415. staggering

  2416. because

  2417. joseph

  2418. was sold

  2419. against

  2420. his

  2421. will

  2422. into

  2423. slavery

  2424. by

  2425. his

  2426. brothers

  2427. right

  2428. joseph

  2429. was

  2430. imprisoned

  2431. against

  2432. his

  2433. will

  2434. by

  2435. potiphar

  2436. and

  2437. his

  2438. wife

  2439. right

  2440. and

  2441. then

  2442. joseph

  2443. really

  2444. to

  2445. no

  2446. will

  2447. of

  2448. his

  2449. own

  2450. was

  2451. raised

  2452. to

  2453. the

  2454. rank

  2455. of

  2456. his

  2457. ear

  2458. pharaoh

  2459. yet

  2460. in

  2461. all

  2462. of

  2463. those

  2464. events

  2465. god

  2466. joseph

  2467. says

  2468. not

  2469. men

  2470. god

  2471. was

  2472. the

  2473. driving

  2474. force

  2475. god

  2476. was

  2477. the

  2478. ultimate

  2479. agent

  2480. god

  2481. did

  2482. this

  2483. to

  2484. me

  2485. he

  2486. sent

  2487. me

  2488. right

  2489. and

  2490. the

  2491. purpose

  2492. of

  2493. it

  2494. all

  2495. was

  2496. to

  2497. keep

  2498. alive

  2499. for

  2500. you

  2501. many

  2502. survivors

  2503. the

  2504. word

  2505. keep

  2506. alive

  2507. has

  2508. the

  2509. same

  2510. used

  2511. when

  2512. god

  2513. preserves

  2514. humanity

  2515. from

  2516. the

  2517. judgment

  2518. in

  2519. the

  2520. flood

  2521. judgment

  2522. in

  2523. Noah's

  2524. story

  2525. so

  2526. god

  2527. wants

  2528. to

  2529. preserve

  2530. god's

  2531. people

  2532. in

  2533. this

  2534. famine

  2535. and

  2536. also

  2537. be

  2538. a

  2539. blessing

  2540. to

  2541. other

  2542. nations

  2543. through

  2544. this

  2545. that

  2546. was

  2547. the

  2548. reason

  2549. why

  2550. god

  2551. sent

  2552. joseph

  2553. to

  2554. egypt

  2555. and

  2556. this

  2557. is

  2558. an

  2559. astonishing

  2560. theological

  2561. truth

  2562. in

  2563. reality

  2564. and

  2565. later

  2566. in

  2567. chapter

  2568. 50

  2569. verse

  2570. 20

  2571. joseph

  2572. repeats

  2573. a

  2574. very

  2575. similar

  2576. and

  2577. even

  2578. more

  2579. pointed

  2580. sentiment

  2581. to

  2582. his

  2583. brothers

  2584. he

  2585. says

  2586. this

  2587. as

  2588. for

  2589. you

  2590. you

  2591. meant

  2592. evil

  2593. against

  2594. me

  2595. but

  2596. god

  2597. meant

  2598. it

  2599. about

  2600. that

  2601. many

  2602. people

  2603. should

  2604. be

  2605. kept

  2606. alive

  2607. as

  2608. they

  2609. are

  2610. today

  2611. notice

  2612. it

  2613. does

  2614. not

  2615. say

  2616. that

  2617. you

  2618. meant

  2619. evil

  2620. against

  2621. me

  2622. but

  2623. god

  2624. used

  2625. it

  2626. for

  2627. good

  2628. doesn't

  2629. say

  2630. that

  2631. you

  2632. meant

  2633. evil

  2634. against

  2635. me

  2636. but

  2637. god

  2638. meant

  2639. it

  2640. for

  2641. good

  2642. that

  2643. means

  2644. from

  2645. eternity

  2646. past

  2647. the

  2648. evil

  2649. that

  2650. came

  2651. to

  2652. joseph

  2653. was

  2654. intended

  2655. by

  2656. god

  2657. for

  2658. good

  2659. he's

  2660. not

  2661. a

  2662. god

  2663. that

  2664. you

  2665. know

  2666. salvages

  2667. some

  2668. stuff

  2669. from

  2670. a

  2671. sinking

  2672. ship

  2673. right

  2674. he's

  2675. not

  2676. a

  2677. god

  2678. that

  2679. turns

  2680. you

  2681. know

  2682. makes

  2683. the

  2684. best

  2685. of

  2686. a

  2687. terrible

  2688. situation

  2689. that's

  2690. not

  2691. what

  2692. god

  2693. is

  2694. doing

  2695. that's

  2696. that's

  2697. a

  2698. very

  2699. you

  2700. know

  2701. diminished

  2702. view

  2703. of god's

  2704. sovereignty

  2705. no

  2706. god

  2707. intends

  2708. he

  2709. meant

  2710. for

  2711. good

  2712. all

  2713. the

  2714. evil

  2715. that

  2716. happened

  2717. to

  2718. joseph

  2719. he

  2720. meant

  2721. that

  2722. for

  2723. good

  2724. for

  2725. joseph

  2726. how

  2727. that's

  2728. amazing

  2729. what

  2730. freedom

  2731. and joy

  2732. we'd

  2733. have

  2734. if

  2735. happens

  2736. to

  2737. us

  2738. all

  2739. the

  2740. evil

  2741. things

  2742. that

  2743. happen

  2744. to

  2745. us

  2746. all

  2747. the

  2749. that

  2750. others

  2751. do

  2752. to

  2753. us

  2754. god

  2755. meant

  2756. it

  2757. for

  2758. good

  2759. he

  2760. doesn't

  2761. just

  2762. salvage

  2763. it

  2764. he

  2765. doesn't

  2766. just

  2767. use

  2768. it

  2769. he's

  2770. sovereign

  2771. over

  2772. and

  2773. through

  2774. it

  2775. all

  2776. that's

  2777. why

  2778. we

  2779. can

  2780. trust

  2781. in

  2782. god

  2783. even

  2784. in

  2785. the

  2786. midst

  2787. of

  2788. sin

  2789. and

  2790. suffering

  2791. 17th

  2793. pastor

  2794. thomas

  2795. watson

  2796. writes

  2797. this

  2798. in his

  2799. book

  2800. all

  2801. things

  2802. for

  2803. good

  2804. it

  2805. says

  2806. heart

  2807. quieting

  2808. consideration

  2809. in

  2810. all

  2811. the

  2812. afflictions

  2813. that

  2814. befall

  2815. us

  2816. that

  2817. god

  2818. has

  2819. a

  2820. special

  2821. hand

  2822. in

  2823. them

  2824. ruth

  2825. 1

  2826. 21

  2827. it

  2828. says

  2829. the

  2830. almighty

  2831. hath

  2832. afflicted

  2833. me

  2834. instruments

  2835. can

  2836. no

  2837. more

  2838. stir

  2839. till

  2840. god

  2841. gives

  2842. them

  2843. a

  2844. commission

  2845. than

  2846. the

  2847. axe

  2848. can

  2849. cut

  2850. of

  2851. itself

  2852. without

  2853. a

  2854. hand

  2855. job

  2856. eyed

  2857. god

  2858. in

  2859. his

  2860. affliction

  2861. therefore

  2862. as

  2863. augustine

  2864. observes

  2865. he

  2866. does

  2867. not

  2868. say

  2869. the

  2870. lord

  2871. gave

  2872. and

  2873. the

  2874. devil

  2875. took

  2876. away

  2877. but

  2878. the

  2879. lord

  2880. have

  2881. taken

  2882. away

  2883. whoever

  2884. brings

  2885. an

  2886. affliction

  2887. to

  2888. us

  2889. it

  2890. is

  2891. god

  2892. that

  2893. sends

  2894. it

  2895. if

  2896. god

  2897. were not

  2898. sovereign

  2899. then the

  2900. ultimate

  2901. explanation

  2902. for sin

  2903. and suffering

  2904. in our

  2905. lives

  2906. is

  2907. us

  2908. that

  2909. would

  2910. make

  2911. my

  2912. job

  2913. as a

  2914. pastor

  2915. really

  2916. really

  2917. difficult

  2918. someone

  2919. suffering

  2920. comes

  2921. to me

  2922. ask

  2923. for

  2924. counsel

  2925. well

  2926. it's

  2927. kind

  2928. of

  2929. your

  2930. fault

  2931. god

  2932. you know

  2933. god

  2934. maybe

  2935. i'm

  2936. sure

  2937. god

  2938. didn't

  2939. want

  2940. that

  2941. for

  2942. you

  2943. but

  2944. really

  2945. there

  2946. wasn't

  2947. much

  2948. he

  2949. could

  2950. do

  2951. about

  2952. it

  2953. brothers

  2954. sisters

  2955. that's

  2956. not

  2957. the

  2958. god

  2959. we

  2960. serve

  2961. he

  2962. is

  2963. powerful

  2964. he

  2965. is

  2966. sovereign

  2967. and

  2968. through

  2969. all

  2970. situations

  2971. sin

  2972. and

  2973. suffering

  2974. he

  2975. works

  2976. his

  2977. sovereign

  2978. purposes

  2979. and

  2980. that's

  2981. why

  2982. we

  2983. can

  2984. trust

  2985. in

  2986. him

  2987. and

  2988. of

  2989. course

  2990. the

  2991. consummate

  2992. example

  2993. of

  2994. that

  2995. is

  2996. what

  2997. god

  2998. did

  2999. through

  3000. jesus

  3001. the

  3002. son

  3003. of

  3004. god

  3005. comes

  3006. to

  3007. us

  3008. people

  3009. kill

  3010. him

  3011. on

  3012. the

  3013. cross

  3014. like

  3015. a

  3016. common

  3017. criminal

  3018. he

  3019. humbled

  3020. himself

  3021. he

  3022. died

  3023. on

  3024. the

  3025. cross

  3026. but

  3027. that

  3028. death

  3029. becomes

  3030. the

  3031. means

  3032. by

  3033. which

  3034. god's

  3035. grace

  3036. is

  3037. given

  3038. out

  3039. to

  3040. his

  3041. people

  3042. to

  3043. all

  3044. who

  3045. would

  3046. entrust

  3047. themselves

  3048. to

  3049. him

  3050. so

  3051. acts

  3052. 2

  3053. 23

  3054. to

  3055. 24

  3056. describes

  3057. it

  3058. this

  3059. way

  3060. jesus

  3061. delivered

  3062. up

  3063. according

  3064. to

  3065. the

  3066. definite

  3067. plan

  3068. and

  3069. foreknowledge

  3070. of

  3071. god

  3072. you

  3073. crucified

  3074. and

  3075. killed

  3076. by

  3077. the

  3078. hands

  3079. of

  3080. lawless

  3081. men

  3082. god

  3083. raised

  3084. him

  3085. up

  3086. losing

  3087. the

  3088. pangs

  3089. of

  3090. death

  3091. because

  3092. it

  3093. was

  3094. not

  3095. possible

  3096. for

  3097. him

  3098. to

  3099. be

  3100. held

  3101. by

  3102. it

  3103. though

  3104. lawless

  3105. men

  3106. killed

  3107. jesus

  3108. it

  3109. was

  3110. according

  3111. to

  3112. the

  3113. definite

  3114. plan

  3115. of

  3116. god

  3117. this

  3118. doesn't

  3119. mean

  3120. that

  3121. we're

  3122. not

  3123. responsible

  3124. for

  3125. our

  3126. choices

  3127. we

  3128. are

  3129. right

  3130. we

  3131. do

  3132. sin

  3133. and

  3134. we

  3135. will

  3136. be

  3137. held

  3138. accountable

  3139. for

  3140. our

  3141. sins

  3142. and

  3143. there

  3144. are

  3145. implications

  3146. consequences

  3147. to

  3148. that

  3149. but

  3150. in

  3151. and

  3152. through

  3153. everything

  3154. god

  3155. works

  3156. his

  3157. sovereign

  3158. purpose

  3159. is

  3160. for

  3161. his

  3162. people

  3163. maybe

  3164. some

  3165. of

  3166. you

  3167. like

  3168. joseph

  3169. have

  3170. a

  3171. dream

  3172. that

  3173. god

  3174. has

  3175. given

  3176. you

  3177. maybe

  3178. not

  3179. a

  3180. literal

  3181. dream

  3182. but

  3183. maybe

  3184. a

  3185. calling

  3186. that

  3187. you

  3188. have

  3189. received

  3190. from

  3191. god

  3192. maybe

  3193. some

  3194. of

  3195. you

  3196. I

  3197. know

  3198. some

  3199. of

  3200. you

  3201. you

  3202. feel

  3203. called

  3204. into

  3205. ministry

  3206. but

  3207. it

  3208. feels

  3209. like

  3210. maybe

  3211. that

  3212. calling

  3213. has

  3214. been

  3215. indefinitely

  3216. delayed

  3217. or only

  3218. partially

  3219. fulfilled

  3220. and

  3221. you

  3222. wonder

  3223. if

  3224. and

  3225. when

  3226. it

  3227. will

  3228. ever

  3229. come

  3230. to

  3231. fruition

  3232. or

  3233. maybe

  3234. you

  3235. feel

  3236. like

  3237. you're

  3238. a

  3239. damaged

  3240. good

  3241. too

  3242. old

  3243. too

  3244. sinful

  3245. too

  3246. messed

  3247. up

  3248. to

  3249. be

  3250. able

  3251. to

  3252. do

  3253. god's

  3254. will

  3255. maybe

  3256. there

  3257. are

  3258. people

  3259. who

  3260. can

  3261. who

  3262. have

  3263. brought

  3264. you

  3265. unspeakable

  3266. pain

  3267. and

  3268. suffering

  3269. but

  3270. joseph's

  3271. story

  3272. reminds

  3273. us

  3274. that

  3275. we

  3276. can

  3277. trust

  3278. in

  3279. god

  3280. in

  3281. the

  3282. midst

  3283. of

  3284. sin

  3285. and

  3286. suffering

  3287. because

  3288. god's

  3289. sovereign

  3290. plan

  3291. prevails

  3292. through

  3293. it

  3294. all

  3295. and

  3296. now

  3297. a short

  3298. final

  3299. point

  3300. from

  3301. jacob

  3302. chapters

  3303. 46

  3304. to 47

  3305. the first

  3306. time

  3307. joseph's

  3308. brothers

  3309. returned

  3310. to jacob

  3311. after selling

  3312. joseph into

  3313. slavery

  3314. jacob

  3315. said

  3316. i will

  3317. down

  3318. to

  3319. shield

  3320. to

  3321. my

  3322. son

  3323. mourning

  3324. he

  3325. says

  3326. a

  3327. similar

  3328. thing

  3329. again

  3330. the

  3331. second

  3332. time

  3333. his

  3334. brothers

  3335. returned

  3336. and

  3337. the

  3338. third

  3339. time

  3340. when

  3341. his

  3342. brothers

  3343. returned

  3344. with

  3345. the

  3346. news

  3347. of

  3348. joseph

  3349. he

  3350. says

  3351. it's

  3352. been

  3353. great

  3354. reversal

  3355. he

  3356. says

  3357. joseph

  3358. my

  3359. son

  3360. is

  3361. still

  3362. alive

  3363. i

  3364. will

  3365. go

  3366. and

  3367. see

  3368. him

  3369. before

  3370. i

  3371. die

  3372. again

  3373. here

  3374. reversing

  3375. jacob's

  3376. fortunes

  3377. and

  3378. working

  3379. his

  3380. sovereign

  3381. plan

  3382. through

  3383. jacob's

  3384. life

  3385. as well

  3386. and then

  3387. here

  3388. when

  3389. and this

  3390. is

  3391. there's

  3392. still

  3393. some

  3394. reluctance

  3395. on

  3396. jacob's

  3397. part

  3398. because

  3399. he

  3400. knows

  3401. that

  3402. and

  3403. we

  3404. know

  3405. from

  3406. being

  3407. in

  3408. genesis

  3409. all

  3410. this

  3411. time

  3412. every

  3413. time

  3414. someone

  3415. a

  3416. god's

  3417. people

  3418. settle

  3419. in

  3420. any

  3421. place

  3422. other

  3423. than

  3424. the

  3425. land

  3426. of

  3427. promise

  3428. the

  3429. land

  3430. of

  3431. Canaan

  3432. it's

  3433. bad

  3434. right

  3435. bad

  3436. things

  3437. happen

  3438. and

  3439. it's

  3440. condemned

  3441. by

  3442. the

  3443. narrator

  3444. and

  3445. so

  3446. here

  3447. they're

  3448. going

  3449. into

  3450. egypt

  3451. to

  3452. settle

  3453. and

  3454. that's

  3455. a

  3456. warning

  3457. like

  3458. oh

  3459. why

  3460. are

  3461. they

  3462. going

  3463. to

  3464. egypt

  3465. to

  3466. settle

  3467. so

  3468. because

  3469. lest

  3470. we

  3471. think

  3472. that

  3473. that

  3474. was

  3475. not

  3476. sanctioned

  3477. by

  3478. god

  3479. himself

  3480. the

  3481. narrator

  3482. explicitly

  3483. tells

  3484. us

  3485. that

  3486. god

  3487. appeared

  3488. in

  3489. a

  3490. vision

  3491. to

  3492. jacob

  3493. to

  3494. send

  3495. him

  3496. to

  3497. go

  3498. to

  3499. egypt

  3500. and

  3501. and

  3502. then

  3503. as

  3504. he

  3505. goes

  3506. makes

  3507. the

  3508. promises

  3509. reaffirms

  3510. the promises

  3511. that he

  3512. had made

  3513. previously

  3514. to

  3515. all

  3516. the

  3517. patriarchs

  3518. i

  3519. will

  3520. make

  3521. you

  3522. into

  3523. a

  3524. great

  3525. nation

  3526. and

  3527. i

  3528. will

  3529. go

  3530. down

  3531. with

  3532. you

  3533. and

  3534. then

  3535. i

  3536. will

  3537. eventually

  3538. bring

  3539. you

  3540. up

  3541. again

  3542. to

  3543. cana

  3544. so

  3545. three

  3546. parts

  3547. to

  3548. the

  3549. patriarchal

  3550. promise

  3564. i

  3565. will

  3566. give

  3567. you

  3568. my

  3569. presence

  3570. to

  3571. be

  3572. with

  3573. you

  3574. he

  3575. is

  3582. four

  3583. and

  3584. joseph's

  3585. hand

  3586. shall

  3587. close

  3588. your

  3590. after

  3591. reiterating

  3592. the

  3593. promises

  3594. of

  3595. national

  3596. importance

  3597. international

  3598. importance

  3599. and

  3600. cosmic

  3601. spiritual

  3602. significance

  3603. god

  3604. comes

  3605. down

  3606. to

  3607. eye

  3608. level

  3609. with

  3610. jacob

  3611. and

  3612. tells

  3613. him

  3614. joseph's

  3615. hand

  3616. shall

  3617. close

  3618. your

  3620. jacob's

  3621. most

  3622. intimate

  3623. immediate

  3624. personal

  3625. concern

  3626. he

  3627. misses

  3628. his

  3629. son

  3630. that's

  3631. what

  3632. he

  3633. longs

  3634. for

  3635. more

  3636. than

  3637. anything

  3638. i hope

  3639. you see

  3640. god's

  3641. compassion

  3642. and

  3643. tenderness

  3644. in

  3645. this

  3646. example

  3647. see

  3648. god's

  3649. not

  3650. this

  3651. grand

  3652. chess

  3653. master

  3654. right

  3655. who

  3656. ruthlessly

  3657. sacrifices

  3658. all of

  3659. his

  3660. pawns

  3661. to

  3662. advance

  3663. his

  3664. grand

  3665. plan

  3666. no

  3667. he

  3668. cares

  3669. intimately

  3670. about

  3671. every

  3672. one

  3673. of

  3674. his

  3675. people

  3676. he

  3677. cares

  3678. for

  3679. us

  3680. he

  3681. cares

  3682. about

  3683. jacob

  3684. sometimes

  3685. as

  3686. christians

  3687. like we

  3688. believe

  3689. that god

  3690. is

  3691. sovereign

  3692. and we

  3693. believe

  3694. that he

  3695. is

  3696. good

  3697. and that

  3698. he's

  3699. going to

  3700. work out

  3701. all

  3702. things

  3703. for his

  3704. glory

  3705. and our

  3706. good

  3707. but at

  3708. the same

  3709. time we

  3710. still have

  3711. this fear

  3712. in the

  3713. back of

  3714. our

  3715. minds

  3716. oh but

  3717. i

  3718. really

  3719. don't

  3720. want

  3721. that

  3722. plan

  3723. that's

  3724. ultimately

  3725. going to

  3726. be good

  3727. for me

  3728. to be

  3729. immediately

  3730. really

  3731. bad

  3732. and painful

  3733. for me

  3734. right

  3735. and we

  3736. have that

  3737. reservation

  3738. but if

  3739. that is

  3740. you you

  3741. can look

  3742. to jacob

  3743. and be

  3744. comforted

  3745. jacob

  3746. said few

  3747. and evil

  3748. have been

  3749. the years

  3750. of his

  3751. life

  3752. yet even

  3753. then if

  3754. through all

  3755. of his

  3756. suffering

  3757. and sin

  3758. god cares

  3759. for him

  3760. personally

  3761. knows his

  3762. losses

  3763. knows his

  3764. suffering

  3765. and struggles

  3766. and all

  3767. of his

  3768. and all

  3769. and we see

  3770. examples

  3771. of god's

  3772. promises

  3773. being

  3774. fulfilled

  3775. and the

  3776. chief among

  3777. them is

  3778. not only

  3779. the multitude

  3780. of children

  3781. he has

  3782. he says

  3783. they have

  3784. seventy

  3785. which is a

  3786. symbolic number

  3787. representing

  3788. fullness

  3789. a full nation

  3790. of israel

  3791. in jacob

  3792. but most

  3793. pointedly in

  3794. chapter 47

  3795. 7 to 10

  3796. when jacob

  3797. has an audience

  3798. with pharaoh

  3799. and it's

  3800. very interesting

  3801. what happens

  3802. it says

  3803. then joseph

  3804. brought in

  3805. jacob his

  3806. father

  3807. and stood

  3808. him before

  3809. pharaoh

  3810. and jacob

  3811. blessed pharaoh

  3812. and pharaoh

  3813. said to jacob

  3814. how many

  3815. are the days

  3816. of the years

  3817. of your

  3818. life

  3819. and jacob

  3820. said to pharaoh

  3821. the days

  3822. of the years

  3823. of my

  3824. sojourning

  3825. are hundred

  3826. and thirty

  3827. years

  3828. few and evil

  3829. have been

  3830. the days

  3831. of the years

  3832. of my life

  3833. and they have

  3834. not attained

  3835. to the days

  3836. of the years

  3837. of the life

  3838. of the fathers

  3839. and the days

  3840. of their

  3841. sojourning

  3842. and jacob

  3843. blessed pharaoh

  3844. and went out

  3845. from the presence

  3846. of pharaoh

  3847. right

  3848. usually when you

  3849. address pharaoh

  3850. you address yourself

  3851. as your servant

  3852. that's what

  3853. his that's what

  3854. joseph's brothers

  3855. do but jacob

  3856. does not address

  3857. himself as your

  3858. servant

  3859. instead he uses

  3860. the simple

  3861. personal first

  3862. personal pronoun

  3863. oh my sons

  3864. did this

  3865. and i did this

  3866. you know

  3867. and then he says

  3868. and then he says

  3869. that he blessed

  3870. pharaoh twice

  3871. and when upon

  3872. his entrance

  3873. and upon him

  3874. before his exit

  3875. and as hebrews

  3876. 7 7 says

  3877. it is beyond

  3878. dispute

  3879. that the

  3880. inferior

  3881. is blessed

  3882. by the superior

  3883. here jacob

  3884. is pharaoh's

  3885. superior

  3886. everyone who's

  3887. watching the scene

  3888. thinks that you know

  3889. pharaoh is granting

  3890. jacob an audience

3891. but jacob is the one

  3892. that's granting

  3893. pharaoh an audience

  3894. and why is this

  3895. infirm

  3896. old man

  3897. who has to be

  3898. carried to places

  3899. and stood up

  3900. by his sons

  3901. why is he

  3902. pharaoh's superior

  3903. because of the

  3904. abrahamic promise

  3905. genesis 12

  3906. i will make you

  3907. a great nation

  3908. i will bless you

  3909. and make your

  3910. name great

  3911. so that you

  3912. will be

  3913. a blessing

  3914. and in you

  3915. all the families

  3916. of the earth

  3917. shall be blessed

  3918. jacob is blessed

  3919. by god almighty

  3920. that's why he's

  3921. pharaoh's

  3922. superior

  3923. god's promises

  3924. are being

  3925. fulfilled

  3926. and even in the

  3927. midst of that

  3928. we also see

  3929. glimpses of the

  3930. promise of land

  3931. going to be

  3932. fulfilled

  3933. so jacob

  3934. insists that he

  3935. gets buried in

  3936. the land of

  3937. canaan

  3938. not in the

  3939. land of

  3940. egypt

  3941. and all of this

  3942. shows that we

  3943. can trust in

  3944. god in the

  3945. midst of sin

  3946. and suffering

  3947. because god's

  3948. sovereign purposes

  3949. prevail through

  3950. it all

  3951. and for us

  3952. this points

  3953. ultimately to

  3954. jesus

  3955. right

  3956. because jacob's

  3957. promise the

  3958. promise that god

  3959. gives to jacob is

  3960. fulfilled literally

  3961. in in

  3962. basically the

  3963. conquest of the

  3964. land of canaan

  3965. and the

  3966. establishment of

  3967. the davidic

  3968. monarchy

  3969. but it's

  3970. fulfilled

  3971. typologically

  3972. theologically

  3973. fulfilled ultimately

  3974. in the coming of

  3975. jesus christ

  3976. as the new

  3977. israel as the

  3978. new testament

  3979. describes him

  3980. and and it's

  3981. so that when we

  3982. are saved and

  3983. we lay hold of

  3984. the promises that

  3985. these patriarchs

  3986. had not by

  3987. becoming a jew

  3988. ethnically but by

  3989. believing in jesus

  3990. christ with faith

  3991. repenting of our

  3992. sins and saying i

  3993. will believe in

  3994. jesus cling to

  3995. him align myself

  3996. to his purposes

  3997. and live for him

  3998. and no longer for

  3999. myself that's when

  4000. you become heirs to

  4001. the promises that

  4002. these patriarchs have

  4003. received and it's

  4004. only when you have

  4005. done that you can

  4006. trust in god in

  4007. the midst of sin

  4008. and suffering

  4009. because this

  4010. promise is not

  4011. for those who

  4012. have not entrusted

  4013. themselves to

  4014. jesus so i urge

  4015. you this morning

  4016. if you have not

  4017. yet aligned

  4018. yourself to god

  4019. and his sovereign

  4020. purposes to do

  4021. so so you can

  4022. have a joy and

  4023. peace that we

  4024. enjoy as believers

  4025. in being able to

  4026. trust god in the

  4027. midst of the

  4028. severest sin and

  4029. suffering because

  4030. god's sovereign

  4031. purposes prevail

  4032. through it all so

  4033. let's pray together

  4034. god we thank you

  4035. for this wonderful

  4036. promise we pray

  4037. that you would

  4038. really help us to

  4039. live in light of

  4040. this truth because

  4041. it would transform

  4042. our perspective our

  4043. attitudes the way

  4044. we engage with

  4045. interact with all

  4046. the circumstances in

  4047. our lives so help

4048. us god we want to

  4049. honor you by

  4050. trusting in you

  4051. in jesus name we

  4052. pray amen
