The Spiritual War, Part 2: Our Weapons

lift up the name of Jesus and also just really connect with the spirit of God tonight as he, as he, plans his word in our hearts and let's let it bear fruit, amen.

So a couple of weeks ago I ministered on the topic of the spiritual war, and you might be aware that we are in a war, and never before in my lifetime have I seen it so obviously playing out what the world sees.

Oh, it's a political, it's a culture war, it's a, you know, because the spirit of this age is so overt.

Now.

There used to be kind of a hiding, a veiled purpose underneath that.

The devil was more sneaky, but now sin and such bad ideas are so overt and in your face, and the only answer is that this is a spiritual war.

So that tells us, as Christians, that it's not going to be fought in the natural realm.

The church alone, on the whole face of this earth, the church has the tools and the weaponry to fight this war because, god, we are on God's side.

And so let's review some of the scriptures that we read last week.

Ephesians six tells us in verse 10, finally, my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might, not in the power of our might Hallelujah, we don't have enough but in the power of his might, put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wilds or military strategies of the devil.

The devil does have strategies, and ours can outwit him, but we've got to know his and for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

So our battle is not with people, it is with these principalities, these, these demonic forces that use people as their pawns and that do inhabit and that plant bad ideas in society.

And so we're seeing those take root, are we not?

And and says therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.

Having done all to stand, stand, just keep standing, don't give ground to the devil.

Do everything you can to stand against those spiritual forces.

And then in second Corinthians 10, it's set in verse three it says we don't walk in the flesh, though we walk in the flesh.

We got bodies.

We live here in the world.

We do not war according to the flesh, just only according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare or our apostolic lifestyle, my dad teaches are not carnal but mighty in God, to the pulling down of strongholds.

In other words, you can't see our weapons with your physical eyes.

They're not physical but they are so strong and they will pull down strongholds.

Strongholds are military encampments.

Think of a castle, think of a military castle on a hill where an entire town, village, culture has built their beautiful castle with the strongest, biggest rocks they could, in the best architecture, and they put their king in there and it's a source of pride.

It's usually on the highest point of the city, maybe and and and all of the king.

The king and his family live there.

The armies fight from there.

It has all their weapons and their cannons and everything aiming down and that castle is a fortified stronghold.

And that's what we're.

If we let the enemy build a fortified stronghold and put weapons in the middle of our town, then it's going to be harder to tear it down.

But listen, our weapons are are mighty and we can pull them down at those strongholds.

And here's what it looks like.

We're casting down arguments and every high thing that it assaults itself against the knowledge of God and bringing every thought into captivity, into the obedience of Christ.

So those, that's what our weapons do.

It brings, it's against the, these ideas, these bad, these demonic ideas in our society.

And I love this scripture.

You can apply it so many different ways.

As I said a couple weeks ago, I always was taught to apply this scripture in my own mind, talking about mental strongholds, bad ideas that would take root in me, in my mind, ideas that were contrary to what I know, jesus Christ, what I am in him, ideas that would would berate me, would weaken me, would devalue who I am in Christ.

So so, if you have those ideas, absolutely we should pull them down, we should quote the word we should, we should come against those thoughts by audibly speaking the word of God in opposition to those, so that we pull them down.

That's one of our weapons, but it's not enough to just apply it in our own mind.

There are bad ideas now seeping out.

The devil has sown these seeds for generations and we as a church and people I mean as Christians all over the world we have allowed these ideas to take root in our society and to grow, and the seeds of those ugly things have now grown to full fruit.

And because we did not uproot them when they were small, we have allowed the enemy to come in and build strongholds in our culture and but thank God we they don't have to stay there because we have mighty weapons.

We have mighty weapons.

What are the weapons?

So that's what we're here to talk about tonight.

We didn't talk about that last time.

We did talk about some ways the early church stood against some bad ideas, and so I recommend it.

I believe it was March 29th, you can go back and listen to that but tonight we're going to move on.

We're going to keep reading in Ephesians 6 and talk about the armor of God, if, if we're supposed to put on the whole armor of God, what's in the armor of God?

And so let's talk about that.

It says stand there for having girded your waist with truth, and so the first weapon is a defensive weapon.

In fact, the first four weapons are defensive weapons and we only have in this passage only lists, one offensive weapon, and we'll get to that one weapon in a minute.

But right now we've got defensive weapons, we've got a truth that girds our waste.

In other words, in a suit of armor there would be a, there would be a low part of the armor that covered your guts, I mean, and it kept the enemy from literally disemboweling.

I mean, that's gross, but that's why you would wear armor into war, and truth is going to, it is going to protect us, it's going to protect our innermost parts.

Be a lover of the truth, be a lover of so.

That means when truth is a little bit salty, when it is a little bit hard to hear, it's still your friend.

Because let me tell you, salt we're supposed to be salt and light, right?

Salt?

It might sting a wound a little bit, but it's a cleanser and it is a preservative, and so we have it's a seasoner.

It's exciting, life is exciting when you have truth, and so we want that truth to protect us, and so believe things that are true.

Do not ever lie to yourself, don't allow a comfortable lie to take root in your heart.

I'm gonna give a funny example here, and but you're gonna see, this part of human nature is just we want to believe the comfortable lie sometimes.

When my oldest child was little, we read the word to her every night.

She had a little children's Bible and we found one that had a really wide variety of children's Bible stories in it and we talked about the word and we were talking about Jesus and we were so focused on our role in telling her about Jesus that I didn't feel like it was right, or it would just take away from that when she was little, to talk about Santa Claus.

Santa Claus just did not come into our conversation.

Even around Christmas time.

We talked about Jesus and baby Jesus and the Nativity, we didn't talk about Santa Claus.

And so when she's about three years old, we saw a statue of St Nick wearing a red robe in a store somewhere and she said mom, mommy, that's Noah up there.

That's Noah.

And I said oh, that's good, that actually that's.

I see why you think that that's Noah, but that's actually another character.

That's a character people make up and his name is Santa Claus and we'll talk about that someday.

And so we always told her Santa Claus is a fun game to pretend, but he's not real and Jesus is the reason why we celebrate Christmas and all of the.

But we can pretend about Santa, and so we might put out cookies and we might pretend that Santa gave us this or that present, but we always knew it was a pretend thing.

And then later, when she was about first grade, she had to write a letter to Santa in her school and so we read it later.

Dear Santa, my parents say you're not real, but I believe in you.

I believe in you and it was so funny that you know she knew the truth.

But she just wanted to believe that comfortable little lie, like all her friends, because, oh, santa was so cool.

Of course we begged her, never to tell anybody else, and I don't, no one ever burned down our house over it.

So I don't think she told anybody that he wasn't anybody else, any other kids, that he wasn't real.

But but it's so funny.

We have that in us.

We want to believe that comfortable lie.

Don't do it, because it's a chink in your armor and the devil can come in and don't let any chinks in your armor.

And so believe the truth and speak the truth.

When you say something, make sure you follow through on it, make sure that your word is your bond and it'll protect you.

And then it also says another part of the armor having on the breastplate of righteousness.

So what is a breastplate?

Well, it covers your heart is pretty important and your lungs.

And so, how the word says in Proverbs, to guard your heart with all diligence.

And how do we do that?

With righteousness or right standing with God, when we know that we are right with God, when we have close fellowship with Him, when there is no sin that we have allowed to creep into our life, that we have not repented of?

Now we all mess up.

We can sin.

We absolutely can mess up any, and that's why Jesus has shed his blood.

In 1 John 1 9 it says if we confess our sin, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And so we wanna have the breastplate of righteousness.

So that means we don't wanna have any sin, any unrepentant sin, that is separating us.

Because again now our heart is exposed to the enemy's fiery darts and our enemy can get one in on us if we have a space between God and us.

So we wanna be right up, close to God, right under his wing, right where there is no sin, nothing to be ashamed of between us and God, where we can come boldly to the throne of grace, and that is what guards our heart from hurt, emotions, from brokenness.

God's will is for us to live in such a peace and harmony with God that nothing can break your heart.

You are unbreakable because of the breastplate of righteousness.

If we'll really get a revelation of that, we can have that All right.

The next thing it says having your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, shoes on your feet.

A warrior does not go to battle barefooted.

In other words, we want you to stay ready.

God wants you to stay ready all the time to say good news, the good news, the gospel, and when you do that, it will bring peace.

It will bring peace to you, it will bring peace and wholeness with God to the people that you minister to.

That gospel of peace is something we should be ready at any moment.

We should never let ourselves go out barefoot.

Be ready to share that peace with people, that good news.

I find it interesting that so many of the things that we preach here in the Word, that we believe as Christians, the devil has a counterfeit for.

Have you noticed that?

Have you noticed that there is a counterfeit?

There's a counterfeit.

Great commission, go into all the world and preach the gospel.

Have you noticed that the left is going into all the world, that the spirit of the age is going into all the world and they're preaching that God is non-existent or that you, that the people, are God, little G-O-D, you are God.

You are in charge of your own truth, and then this person has their truth over there.

That's a bad idea.

We should pull down that stronghold, shouldn't we Using our weapon?

And so there is a counterfeit gospel that that other side has, and we have good news of peace, and they have bad news all the time.

They are ready to share it, though, aren't they?

They've got their shoes on and they are ready to share with you all of their bad news that you are aggrieved and you have offended just your very nature and something you can't control.

You have, you.

You have there's bad news for you, and there's no, there's no atonement that you can make other than to bow down to their idols, and that's bad news.

And what does it lead to?

Division, war, injustice.

It's bad, and so they have that, but how much more when we share the true gospel?

You know, speaking of counterfeits and this is a side thing a little bit, but God's been dealing with me about this, you know, when Moses, remember, I'm gonna take you way back to the book of Exodus, right there, the second book of the Bible.

We rewind it.

Here we are in the New Testament.

We're gonna go way on back to Exodus.

And when Moses, when he first received the law, he first, and even before that, when he first, he was leading the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, remember, he had many signs and wonders and he could throw his staff on the ground and God's power would make that staff turn into a snake.

And do you remember that there were magicians from Egypt that could mock that gift, they could copycat that.

They too could throw their staff on the ground and they could use their incantations and spells and they could cause that staff to become a snake.

But guess what?

Moses' snake ate their snake.

And so God's power was, you know, and blood, you know, moses turned the water into blood, remember that.

And then they said, oh, we can do that, we can turn a little bit of water over here into blood.

But then there got to be so many signs and wonders that the magicians could not keep up and they were proven wrong.

They were.

Their magic did not work anymore.

And I'm telling you, we're getting to that point where all the power that we have, the devil is trying to copycat, copycat, copycat, but in the end there is an end coming and our weapons are mighty and we will win.

With God's plan and in action we will win.

And so it says to be ready to always share the gospel of peace.

And then, finally, it says, above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, all the fiery darts, all the fiery darts.

I know people right now in the church fighting many battles.

Sometimes it's a health battle and you get one report on this part of your body and then there's another report over here, I think, of Jack Wardell.

Jack, we're gonna pray for Jack in just a minute, but he's a miracle man.

He just received a clean bill of health, having fought lung cancer, and then the devil tried to give him a stroke and you know what?

He came through that too and he's coming out.

He's not 100% yet, but he's getting better and better and it's awesome.

He is quenching all the fiery darts because he just keeps speaking the word and he just won't lose.

He will not.

He refuses to lose, he refuses to give up, he refuses to doubt and his confession is strong.

We're so proud of you, jack.

But that's just one of those things.

We are to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one and in the end we will be still standing strong with our shield of faith.

And then here's an important one the helmet of salvation.

The helmet of salvation, you know, earlier we talked about guarding our heart, but we've got to guard what comes into our mind, and again, with those strongholds and those bad ideas, when we have a revelation of our salvation, what Jesus truly bought and paid for on the cross with his blood, all the things that that means for us.

He cleansed our iniquity yes, he did, but he also healed all our diseases.

Psalm 103 says who redeems our life from destruction and crowns us with loving, kindness and tender mercies.

I'm telling you, our salvation is so rich and so deep.

When we will understand it and never let the devil steal it out of our mind, I'm telling you, the helmet of salvation can be so powerful it can keep the thoughts of the wicked one out of our mind and from taking root in our heart.

And now, now the devil will leave.

We have been talking about mostly defensive weapons, but now we really do have some powerful, powerful offensive weapons where we can stick it to the devil.

And I bet many of you know what I'm about to say because, hello, it's in the verse, but we talk about this a lot the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

When I was a little kid we never went to church without our sword.

I'm telling you, pick up your sword, let's go, let's go to church.

I mean, this was our sword and we knew.

We called it our sword.

Now we didn't even call it a Bible.

Sometimes I'm telling you it is our best defensive weapon against anything the enemy has.

It is some big firepower here and the devil would love to steal the word of God, not only when we first hear it.

We've been talking about Mark four and the parable of the sower.

Here's the word sewn in our hearts and then sometimes it doesn't bear fruit, right, because we don't have our hearts prepared, or their weeds or their rocks in it or whatever.

But the word of God in our discourse, in the way we talk to people, if we're talking to an unbeliever, I have found that it is the most useful and wonderful thing to just sprinkle.

I don't always say well, this scripture says that, or Psalm 91, if I'm talking to an unbeliever, I might not quote the scripture reference, but I will try to make a point to let my speech have scripture in it.

Let God's word really come out of your mouth.

You can sneak it, but let that be a part of what you say and how you answer certain things and problems and it will bring peace and comfort.

It is so sharp I find that just bringing the word into the conversation it elevates, it lifts and there's such power.

That's why the devil hates it.

I'm telling you recently I have a dear friend who stood in my wedding years ago and she's been a youth pastor for many, many years and in a school chaplain.

She has done work in our public schools here.

She was recently in Austin because our state legislature was hearing testimony to whether or not to vote through into their committee a bill that would support school chaplains, that would allow school districts in the state to use state funds to hire chaplains in their schools.

They're hiring counselors, they're hiring mental health professionals.

They do bring in volunteer chaplains after a school shooting, for example, or laughter.

I'm not here to talk about that issue, but it was an impassioned issue for my friend because she's seen the benefit of this work in her life she's been able to help kids, talk them off the wall if they were suicidal.

She's been able to get them the care they needed.

She really believes strongly in that issue.

She went up there to Austin and she was sitting in an overflow room full of lots of people who were going to testify for or against this bill.

She couldn't tell, necessarily, but one guy came in here and it was kind of obvious what his viewpoint was going to be.

He had on a certain bracelet, he had on a certain demeanor about him and she kind of knew okay, he's going to testify against the thing I want.

She just gently just struck up a conversation.

I think he did actually hey, is this the right room?

Oh, yeah, I'm here waiting, oh, and then she got to talking and she was able.

She said he just said, well, you know, are you here, are you going to testify against this?

Are you going to testify for this chaplain thing?

Because I don't want that.

He said I have had a really bad experience with a pastor when I was a kid and I would just never want anybody to have that.

And so she slowly took him through that.

She said, well, but why wouldn't you want other kids to have at least have a chance of getting the help they need.

And so she kind of calmly walked him through and she just brought Pete and then she cared about him.

Well, what happened, you know?

And and she just was able to bring him through and then at the end of the conversation she had such passion but such love and care he actually got up and he left without testifying because she was, she can.

She convicted him and he was convicted.

I know the Holy Spirit worked through her to just convict him that his side was was wrong and he just knew, and I believe that man will get saved, I do.

She asked him how old are you?

And he said, as a oh well, I'm so.

So you know, the kids today, they deal with so much more than we even had to think about when we were their age, and so it was just such a it's just such a neat thing.

We have power in our words and just with kindness we can bring people along.

All right.

So, but the the word of God bringing the word of God, and let me read to you Hebrews 412, the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

When you bring the word into a situation, it can cut, but it can really reveal motives and it can reveal.

It says thoughts and intents of the heart, things that people did not want you to know.

Now, all of a sudden, you have spoken a word, and it will.

It will come out.

It will come out in the conversation, it will come and it will come out when, when you're just reading the word for yourself, god will bring a line in your heart, when, whenever those things are in your heart are undecided, unresolved, whenever you're mushy or wishy-washy on something, the word of God can divide that that and cut away.

The doubt cut away.

So let your time with the Lord be in the word of God and then bring it into your conversations.

It's your sharpest weapon, no matter what facts that you have.

If you're trying to debate someone on the merits of your case, you know, yeah, it's good to have facts, words are great, but your highest, best, sharpest weapon is always the word of God.

The devil would love and I know I see this in the political world all the time.

Oh, don't use the Bible as part of your, as part of your argument.

You know if you're going to testify for this or for that, don't use the Bible.

No, no, no, no, no, no.

It's our strongest, it's our most powerful weapon, because no one can resist it.

And so it's awesome.

Let's always use the word and then.

And then it says this is this is interesting 2 Timothy 2, still in 2 Timothy 2, but down in verse 23,.

Avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

Hmm, all right.

What's a foolish and ignorant dispute If we are charged to pull down strongholds, to pull up little weeds as they come up, that are damaging to the kingdom of God, that are against God's word?

If we are supposed to pull those out, how do we know if we're picking in the wrong battle?

How do we know if it's what Timothy would call a foolish or Paul would call a foolish and ignorant dispute and generate strife?

How do we know that?

I wish there were an easy answer for that, but I have one.

I have an answer.

It is the Holy Spirit on the inside of you.

Let's be people.

Before we speak, I'm talking about, I'm preaching to myself.

Before we speak, let's get the mind of God on something.

Let's dig deep in the Holy Spirit and see is this a battle Right now that I feel or that I have an anointing?

Do I have a word from God on this dispute so that I'll know if I am doing the work of God or if I'm just generating strife?

And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all.

I was using my friend as an example of that.

She was so gentle with this man and it worked ultimately and able to teach, and patient in humility, correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance so that they may know the truth.

Isn't that sweet of God?

God is, so he can be so sweet.

He doesn't always grab a ball bat and beat somebody up, but let's go in that word humility real quick.

I do.

It says in humility, correcting those who are in opposition, even itself.

Many people would say that even by correcting something in someone, you are putting yourself over them and that is not humility.

And that for a Christian to be really humble, we should bow and scrape to the lie that is purported by the other person and we should say oh well, that's your view and that's a good view.

And you know, I have my view over here.

And that's an example of what's supposed to be a humble Christian.

A humble, and where the Christian just bowels to the other person because that's humility.

Is that true humility?

I would say no.

I would say no.

We are not to bow down to the ideas of man or even the feelings and emotions unchecked feelings and emotions of mankind, but we are.

Who are we submissive to?

When we have true humility?

We are submissive only to God.

And our humility tells us in humility, I fear God and not man.

And so my humility is I am humble enough to obey the word of God and try to gently, lovingly correct this person in strength of the word, even if it might hurt their feelings.

But I'm being obedient, I'm bowing my knee to the truth, the inerrant word of God and its power to heal and help that person.

And so my humility is toward God and not toward man, and therefore I can gently correct those people who may be in opposition and they won't the word here says that they won't always listen.

But we want to pray when we do that, and we want to do it gently and praying that God perhaps will grant them repentance so that they may know the truth.

I mean, when they know the truth, their truth can really set them free, that they may come to their senses.

That they may come to their senses, have you noticed as the world feel like it's?

Everyone is insane.

How can they not see the truth?

But so we're praying that they would come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, that right now they've been taken captive by the devil to do the devil's will.

But just a gentle correction from us when we bring the word, we can set them free.

What an honor, what an honor.

And so who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

So let's be those people who can, in humility to God, help bring correction to other people.

And so that's our number one.

Our weapon is our sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, the living word.

And then there is another weapon and I have exhausted my time, I cannot teach all on it tonight.

It is its own topic for discussion, but I will just mention it here tonight because I've seen it in work Our other valuable, awesome weapon in this war.

And it's not mentioned in Ephesians six, but it is mentioned all through the word, the weapon of praise and the weapon of worship toward God.

That is a mighty force.

It will break the power of the enemy.

In Psalm 22, three, it says you were holy, oh God, you inhabit the praises of Israel.

If he inhabited the praises of Israel, how much more does he inhabit the praises of his church?

In other words, when we praise the Lord, we are building him a throne in the middle of our situation, in the middle of our battle.

We are inviting him in and he can come and sit down and reign and rule and inhabit that situation and we bring his power to bear in it.

And in the Old Testament there was a tradition in some battles.

In 2 Chronicles 20, that will be your homework to read about this.

But 2 Chronicles 20, this is Old Testament.

Now how much more do we have?

But there was.

Here is the nation of Judah, god's special people At this time Israel, the kingdom of Israel and the kingdom of Judah.

They're both Jewish people, both called by God.

But they were a divided kingdom for lots of reasons.

But Judah was the one that served God more than Israel did.

Israel had more ungodly kings and they had a battle come against them.

It happened that the people of Moab and the people of Amman and others besides the Ammonites came to battle against Jehoshaphat.

Jehoshaphat, he's not just a jump in, jehoshaphat, yee-haw, he is the king of Judah at this time, and he faced people who came told Jehoshaphat saying a great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, a great multitude, a great multitude.

This is not just your regular, everyday attack.

I mean, how many of you felt like you've been attacked by a great multitude?

Sometimes the devil comes, but he and I will make a long story short he put his, instead of sending his warriors out first in battle, he put his praise and worship team out first in battle, and there was prayer involved, there was much humility and they realized that they had no chance against this enemy and their own strength and we don't either.

But they prayed and they sought the Lord and they heard from his prophets.

They heard a word from God.

They dug in in prayer and fasted until they knew what God was saying.

And he said do not be afraid in verse eight I'm sorry, verse 15, do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's.

And then how did they fight it.

They fought it with praise and worship and in the end, in the end.

Here let's just read it.

I'll just finish with this, verse 21,.

When he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord and those who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, before the army, before the army.

You know, it's good to fight, it's good to have your sword of the spirit, it's good to have all those things, but before you do that, it is so great to sing, praise and to spend time with the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

What it felt like, probably to them, was I'm in the front line of a battle with a great multitude of people and I might be about to die, but what God wanted them to see is no, I'm gonna put you right here, in the shadow of my wing.

I want you to spend time in the beauty of my holiness, which also happens to be the front line of battle.

But I'm gonna fight this for you.

The battle isn't yours, it is the Lord's.

Praising God in the middle of your battle actually acknowledges that, and it lets God just come to bear.

And so what happened was they went out before the army and were saying praise the Lord for his mercy and doors forever and now, when they began to sing and to praise the Lord, listen what the Lord did?

He set ambushes against the people of Ammon, moab and Mount Sair who had come against Judah, and they were defeated.

For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabits of Mount Sair and to utterly kill and destroy them.

And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Sair, they helped to destroy one another.

So, in other words, you had three factions of enemy coming against the Israel or the people of Judah, and those three factions all as soon as the Judah people began to praise God, they began to worship in the beauty of holiness.

What happened?

The enemy fought each other until everybody died.

All of the enemy was completely wiped out and all that was left was the spoil of their camp, and it was more than the people could carry away.

When Jehoshaphat verse 25, and his people came to take away the spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies and precious jewelry which they stripped off for themselves.

More than they could carry away.

More than they could carry away, and there were three days.

They were three days gathering the spoil, because there was so much, so much, so much.

I'm telling you, I don't care what the devil has sent against you tonight, I don't care what he sends against the people of God in the earth today.

He has put God has put the people of God in the world right now.

For such a time as this, we will use our weapons, we will stand and fight against the enemy, we will pull down mighty strongholds, but we'll do it with the praises of God, the high praises of God, in our mouth and a two-edged sword in our hand, the word of God, and we're gonna march in to the enemy's camp and we're gonna take everything, everything he thought he won.
