  1. I am preparing for speaking with you today.

  2. One of the things that I use is I put on some music

  3. so that I can block out the things that are around me

  4. and I focus in on the preparation.

  5. And one of my favorite bands for this

  6. uses a combination of musical styles.

  7. And I'm going to let you know kind of what,

  8. a little bit of what they sound like.

  9. They use traditional bagpipes.

  10. They're most certainly a rock band.

  11. They have thematic elements to their albums.

  12. And so the album I listen to most is a steampunk album.

  13. And to add into this mix, they're from Arizona.

  14. And I'm like, Arizona just doesn't seem to fit with any of that.

  15. But somehow in putting this music together,

  16. it works for me.

  17. It works for me.

  18. I like it.

  19. It's not for everyone.

  20. In today's message, we're going to be combining some different elements.

  21. The first thing that we're going to be doing is we're going to be combining

  22. our study of 1 Corinthians.

  23. And so we started that a few weeks back

  24. and we're going to be continuing our study of 1 Corinthians,

  25. which is a letter to a young struggling church

  26. that is struggling with errors

  27. and not following God as they should.

  28. And the second aspect, Merry Christmas.

  29. We're going to have elements of the Christmas story

  30. weaving into this.

  31. And in putting these things together,

  32. putting these two elements together,

  33. this letter to the 1 Corinthians and the Christmas story,

  34. my hope is that we can use this combination

  35. to make beautiful, melodious music.

  36. It is possible, though, it is possible that I will make a dissonant and harmonious mess.

  37. We shall see.

  38. As we go through our sermon this morning,

  39. here will be the outline.

  40. We're going to look at four different sections.

  41. And in each of those sections,

  42. we're going to be a comparison of two elements.

  43. Also, in each one of those sections,

  44. we'll be incorporating part of the Christmas stories

  45. as examples of what is being taught in that.

  46. Section number one,

  47. this is dealing with verses one through five.

  48. Section number one is communicating the gospel.

  49. Will we be ignored versus heard?

  50. So once again, communicating the gospel.

  51. Will we be ignored versus heard?

  52. So once again, the context that we're in here in 1 Corinthians

  53. is that this is a church that is filled with divisions.

  54. They are filled with people who are arguing with one another,

  55. people who are not getting along.

  56. And also as part of this division,

  57. is they are a group who is very spiritually immature.

  58. They are a growing group, a young church.

  59. And they have errors in belief and errors in conduct.

  60. What we saw in chapter one

  61. is that the church has been enamored with personalities.

  62. The church has been enamored with social status.

  63. The church has been enamored with these particular people

  64. who have this particular allegiance.

  65. Next thing that you see

  66. is that the church has been enamored with intellectualism,

  67. the wisdom of the day.

  68. And so they have gravitated and revolved themselves around

  69. that which seems wise by the day's standards.

  70. What we'll find today is that Paul dulls his personality.

  71. He dulls his intellectualism

  72. in order to share the gospel.

  73. So here now from verse one,

  74. as we hear from Paul,

  75. the author of this letter to the Corinthian church.

  76. And he says there in verse one,

  77. I did not come proclaiming to you

  78. the testimony of God with lofty speech,

  79. it's his personality,

  80. or wisdom within intellectualism.

  81. So Paul says,

  82. I didn't come with lofty speech or wisdom.

  83. Instead,

  84. Paul has used a simplistic approach

  85. to communicating the gospel.

  86. He says there in verse two,

  87. he says,

  88. I proclaim to you,

  89. Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  90. And he has presented this message

  91. with fear and much trembling.

  92. He hasn't used a snazzy personality.

  93. He hasn't wowed them with who he is.

  94. Instead,

  95. he has come with fear and much trembling.

  96. And we see in the next verse there,

  97. in verse four,

  98. that he's also come and presented this message

  99. with the spirit and power.

  100. He hasn't relied upon his intellectualism.

  101. He hasn't relied upon his education,

  102. which is expanse and vast and great.

  103. He hasn't wowed them with his knowledge.

  104. Instead,

  105. he was relied upon spirit and power.

  106. So Paul has skewed the extravagant.

  107. He has moved away from lofty speech and wisdom.

  108. And instead,

  109. he has proclaimed an unadorned message,

  110. Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  111. As we see the approach that Paul is taking

  112. here with the Corinthian church,

  113. I want us to contrast it

  114. to Paul's approach when he was in Athens.

  115. Now,

  116. the book of Acts actually records Paul's visit

  117. to this very church.

  118. And it takes place in Acts 18.

  119. Just prior to that,

  120. in Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  121. we have Paul,

  122. he was in Athens.

  123. And it records Paul's experience there.

  124. And what we find there in Acts chapter 17

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  125. is that Paul encounters a group of philosophers.

  126. He encounters the Epicureans and the Stoics.

  127. And he begins to engage them.

  128. And part of the place he engages them

  129. is in the marketplace.

  130. And out in the public space

  131. and in the public square.

  132. And in engaging them there,

  133. they invite him to come

  134. and speak at the Areopagus.

  135. They say,

  136. Paul,

  137. we want to hear from you

  138. in this place of wisdom and intellect.

  139. We want to hear what you have to say.

  140. And then Paul,

  141. as he goes to speak

  142. to the intellectuals of the day,

  143. to the philosophers of the day

  144. there in Athens,

  145. he begins by saying,

  146. men of Athens,

  147. I perceive that in every way

  148. you are very religious.

  149. And then he follows that up.

  150. He says,

  151. and in fact,

  152. you're so religious,

  153. you have an altar

  154. to the unknown God.

  155. He says,

  156. well,

  157. let me take a moment

  158. and explain to you

  159. who this unknown God is.

  160. Well,

  161. it's the Lord God of heaven.

  162. We see Paul there

  163. as he is communicating the gospel

  164. in Athens

  165. is that he is relying very much

  166. on his personal aspects.

  167. He is relying very much

  168. on his charisma.

  169. You can see him

  170. engaging the people of Athens

  171. in a powerful way.

  172. He's also relying upon

  173. his intellect

  174. as he is trying to sway

  175. the philosophers of the day

  176. of the validity

  177. of who God is.

  178. This is quite in contrast

  179. to what we find Paul doing

  180. in Corinth.

  181. In Corinth,

  182. Paul intentionally

  183. seems to have avoided

  184. relying upon any personal aspects.

  185. He's not relied upon

  186. his charisma

  187. or his intellect

  188. to present the gospel.

  189. While in Athens,

  190. Paul seems to be relying

  191. upon all of these things.

  192. Putting these two instances together,

  193. here's what we can see.

  194. First,

  195. we see that the gospel,

  196. it does not change.

  197. The gospel never changes.

  198. The gospel is good news

  199. about Jesus.

  200. The communication

  201. of the gospel,

  202. however,

  203. is situational

  204. and can depend

  205. upon the circumstances.

  206. Let me provide

  207. a personal note.

  208. I find myself

  209. communicating to people

  210. a lot.

  211. That's part of what I do

  212. in my workplace,

  213. is communicate.

  214. And here's what I have discovered.

  215. Communication

  216. is not what you say.

  217. Communication

  218. is what is heard.

  219. When we communicate

  220. the gospel,

  221. let's strive

  222. to be heard.

  223. Maybe we communicate

  224. the gospel

  225. in simple terms,

  226. just like Paul did

  227. to the church in Corinth.

  228. Maybe we say

  229. it's Jesus Christ

  230. and Him crucified.

  231. Maybe we utilize

  232. our intellect,

  233. our education.

  234. Maybe we use that.

  235. You know what?

  236. And if you have

  237. a snazzy personality,

  238. maybe you use that too.

  239. If it can be helpful

  240. to make the gospel

  241. understood

  242. to those who are around us,

  243. then let us strive

  244. to do that.

  245. There is a profound

  246. biblical example

  247. of the gospel,

  248. the message of Jesus

  249. being made known

  250. to people.

  251. And that comes

  252. from the wise men.

  253. The wise men

  254. who learned

  255. of Jesus' birth.

  256. One of the things

  257. that we see

  258. with the birth of Jesus

  259. is that

  260. the birth of Jesus,

  261. Jesus was for everyone.

  262. He was for all nations

  263. and all people.

  264. And in the story

  265. of the scriptures,

  266. we find in Matthew 2,

  267. the wise men

  268. who lived in the east,

  269. far away from where

  270. Jesus was,

  271. and really far out

  272. of the world view

  273. of which Jesus

  274. was born into.

  275. These men are nowhere

  276. near Jerusalem.

  277. They're nowhere

  278. near Bethlehem.

  279. And these men,

  280. they divine messages

  281. from the stars.

  282. That's how they look

  283. and guide themselves.

  284. It's by what they see

  285. from the stars.

  286. By the way,

  287. this is a practice

  288. that is explicitly

  289. condemned in the scriptures.

  290. In the scriptures,

  291. we're taught,

  292. don't look to the stars

  293. to get your message.

  294. But that's where

  295. these people look

  296. to understand things.

  297. So to learn of Jesus,

  298. God used a medium

  299. the wise man

  300. would understand.

  301. God put a star

  302. in the sky

  303. because that's

  304. where they were looking.

  305. God wanted them

  306. to hear about Jesus.

  307. God wanted them

  308. to know about Jesus.

  309. And God says,

  310. I'm going to tell you

  311. in a way

  312. that you can understand.

  313. I'm putting a star

  314. in the sky.

  315. And as we see

  316. from the scriptures,

  317. what do the wise men do?

  318. They see that star

  319. and they say,

  320. it's the king of the Jews.

  321. Let us go that way.

  322. As we go moving on

  323. to the next section,

  324. what we've seen

  325. so far from this one

  326. is that Paul

  327. commuted the gospel

  328. in a direct

  329. and bland form,

  330. intentionally not relying

  331. upon charisma

  332. or intellect.

  333. We're going to see

  334. the reason for this approach

  335. here in the next section.

  336. So the second section

  337. that we're looking at

  338. is wisdom.

  339. Temporary

  340. versus eternal.

  341. That's verses

  342. six through nine.

  343. So once again,

  344. the second section

  345. is wisdom.

  346. Temporary

  347. versus eternal.

  348. Wisdom is used

  349. in contrasting terms

  350. here in this passage.

  351. And there's two kinds

  352. of wisdom

  353. that is referenced.

  354. There is a

  355. personality-driven

  356. wisdom

  357. that relies upon

  358. intellect of the day.

  359. I'm going to be referring

  360. to that as

  361. temporary wisdom.

  362. There is also

  363. wisdom that is

  364. God-oriented

  365. that comes from

  366. our understanding

  367. of who God is.

  368. I'm going to be referring

  369. to that as

  370. eternal wisdom.

  371. The scriptures here

  372. provide an example

  373. of these two

  374. different types

  375. of wisdom.

  376. And it's almost

  377. like there's two tables

  378. that have been put forward.

  379. And on the one side

  380. of the table,

  381. we see temporary wisdom.

  382. On the other side

  383. of the table,

  384. we see it contrasted

  385. with eternal wisdom.

  386. Temporary wisdom

  387. is mentioned in verse six.

  388. It's described as

  389. the wisdom

  390. of this age.

  391. That means it seems

  392. right at the time.

  393. But only in the short term.

  394. It has a very short

  395. perspective,

  396. a small perspective.

  397. It has the perspective

  398. only of this moment,

  399. of this time.

  400. And we see that it is

  401. used by rulers

  402. who are doomed

  403. to pass away.

  404. The rulers will pass away

  405. and so will this wisdom

  406. that is with them.

  407. Next, in verse seven,

  408. we have eternal wisdom.

  409. And it is described

  410. as wisdom from God.

  411. And it's secret

  412. and it's hidden

  413. to temporary wisdom.

  414. And we also see

  415. with eternal wisdom

  416. that it is decreed

  417. by God

  418. before the ages.

  419. Hence,

  420. it's eternal quality

  421. because it has come

  422. with God

  423. even before the ages.

  424. Next, in verse eight,

  425. we see once again

  426. temporary wisdom mentioned.

  427. And it says,

  428. there in verse eight,

  429. none of the rulers

  430. of this stage

  431. understood this,

  432. this wisdom of God.

  433. And one of the things

  434. that we see

  435. with temporary wisdom

  436. is it does not know God.

  437. It does not understand

  438. who God is.

  439. And in fact,

  440. the passage tells us

  441. that because of their ignorance,

  442. this temporary wisdom,

  443. because of the ignorance

  444. of the people

  445. who used it,

  446. they crucified

  447. the Lord of glory.

  448. Next verse,

  449. we have eternal wisdom

  450. listed again.

  451. And we see that

  452. there in verse nine,

  453. eternal wisdom

  454. is described.

  455. This fullness

  456. of this wisdom

  457. is hidden from people.

  458. It's not seen.

  459. It's not heard.

  460. In fact,

  461. it's not even imagined.

  462. But in the fullness

  463. of time

  464. and the completion

  465. of things,

  466. this wisdom

  467. will be accessible

  468. by our love

  469. for God.

  470. Key point

  471. that comes out

  472. of this

  473. is that

  474. temporary wisdom,

  475. the wisdom

  476. of this age

  477. functions

  478. ignorantly

  479. of God.

  480. As a result

  481. of this

  482. temporary wisdom,

  483. it cannot

  484. discern God.

  485. It cannot

  486. understand

  487. who God is.

  488. When it comes

  489. to this idea

  490. of God,

  491. temporary wisdom

  492. will reduce

  493. God to mystery,

  494. that kind of

  495. unknown thing

  496. out there.

  497. fear.

  498. It might

  499. reduce God

  500. to indifference.

  501. That's good

  502. for you.

  503. That's great.

  504. That's not

  505. for me.

  506. It might

  507. reduce God

  508. to ridicule.

  509. How foolish,

  510. how simple-minded

  511. are those people

  512. who would

  513. follow God.

  514. We also see

  515. that temporary

  516. wisdom

  517. cannot

  518. follow God.

  519. Temporary wisdom

  520. is unable

  521. to follow

  522. the ways

  523. of God.

  524. Just like

  525. you cannot

  526. walk

  527. along an

  528. unseen path,

  529. temporary wisdom

  530. cannot

  531. follow God.

  532. Now,

  533. as you

  534. walk,

  535. try to find

  536. your way

  537. along an

  538. unseen path,

  539. there might

  540. be moments

  541. where you

  542. occasionally

  543. intersect with

  544. it,

  545. but you

  546. cannot

  547. follow it.

  548. So also,

  549. temporary wisdom

  550. might occasionally

  551. intersect with

  552. God's wisdom,

  553. but it

  554. cannot

  555. follow it.

  556. These limitations

  557. of temporary

  558. wisdom,

  559. they were

  560. true when

  561. Paul wrote

  562. this to the

  563. Corinthian church

  564. two millennia

  565. ago.

  566. These limitations

  567. are still

  568. true today.

  569. As we think

  570. of this idea

  571. of temporary

  572. wisdom

  573. versus

  574. eternal

  575. wisdom,

  576. I want us

  577. to look at

  578. an example

  579. that comes

  580. from the

  581. Christmas story.

  582. And it

  583. comes from

  584. Joseph,

  585. who learns

  586. that his

  587. fiancee is

  588. pregnant.

  589. And as we

  590. look at this

  591. example,

  592. I want you

  593. to think

  594. about what

  595. advice would

  596. you give

  597. Joseph?

  598. If Joseph

  599. were your

  600. friend,

  601. and he

  602. were describing

  603. this situation

  604. to you,

  605. what advice

  606. would you

  607. give him?

  608. If you

  609. were relying

  610. upon temporary

  611. wisdom,

  612. I think

  613. he would

  614. tell Joseph,

  615. stay away

  616. from Mary.

  617. With

  618. eternal

  619. wisdom,

  620. we know

  621. it was

  622. all part

  623. of God's

  624. plan.

  625. So here's

  626. what happens

  627. in the

  628. story.

  629. Joseph

  630. and Mary

  631. are espoused.

  632. And what

  633. that means

  634. is that

  635. they had

  636. the permanence

  637. of marriage

  638. and the

  639. privileges

  640. of engagement.

  641. So when

  642. Joseph

  643. discovers

  644. that

  645. is

  646. espoused

  647. that

  648. Mary

  649. is

  650. pregnant,

  651. he is

  652. quite

  653. concerned

  654. because

  655. they

  656. have

  657. not

  658. consummated

  659. their

  660. relationship.

  661. And so

  662. upon

  663. learning

  664. of this

  665. and realizing

  666. that Mary

  667. is pregnant,

  668. he begins

  669. to follow

  670. the path

  671. of temporary

  672. wisdom.

  673. He

  674. resolves

  675. to divorce

  676. her quietly

  677. and end

  678. the relationship

  679. that he

  680. has with

  681. her.

  682. And we

  683. would say

  684. with

  685. Joseph's

  686. limited

  687. information,

  688. at that

  689. time,

  690. he is

  691. making

  692. absolutely

  693. the right

  694. choice.

  695. We would

  696. understand

  697. why he

  698. is making

  699. that choice.

  700. I don't

  701. think people,

  702. even God

  703. following people,

  704. would not

  705. fault

  706. Joseph for

  707. his plans

  708. to not

  709. Mary

  710. Mary.

  711. And as

  712. Joseph is

  713. considering

  714. these things,

  715. an angel

  716. comes and

  717. speaks to

  718. Joseph in

  719. a dream.

  720. And this

  721. angel provides

  722. this information.

  723. The angel

  724. says,

  725. Joseph,

  726. son of

  727. David,

  728. do not

  729. fear to

  730. take Mary

  731. as your

  732. wife,

  733. for that

  734. which is

  735. conceived

  736. in her

  737. is from

  738. the Holy

  739. Spirit.

  740. She will

  741. bear a

  742. son,

  743. and you

  744. shall call

  745. his name

  746. Jesus,

  747. for he

  748. will save

  749. his people

  750. from their

  751. sins.

  752. This

  753. encounter

  754. with the

  755. angel

  756. moves

  757. Joseph's

  758. perception

  759. of the

  760. matter.

  761. He's no

  762. longer

  763. viewing this

  764. pregnancy

  765. from a

  766. human

  767. perspective.

  768. He's no

  769. longer

  770. viewing this

  771. pregnancy

  772. with

  773. temporary

  774. wisdom.

  775. Instead

  776. now,

  777. he is

  778. being given

  779. greater

  780. insight and

  781. greater

  782. understanding.

  783. And he's

  784. going to

  785. view this

  786. pregnancy

  787. from God's

  788. perspective.

  789. He's going

  790. to view

  791. this

  792. pregnancy

  793. from the

  794. perspective

  795. of

  796. eternal

  797. wisdom.

  798. And he's

  799. going to

  800. take a

  801. very

  802. different

  803. approach

  804. to it

  805. with this

  806. new

  807. information.

  808. As we

  809. think in

  810. our own

  811. lives,

  812. as followers

  813. of Jesus

  814. Christ,

  815. we will

  816. have moments

  817. where we

  818. need to

  819. turn away

  820. from the

  821. wisdom of

  822. this age.

  823. We will

  824. have moments

  825. where we

  826. need to

  827. say,

  828. no,

  829. that's

  830. temporary

  831. wisdom,

  832. wisdom,

  833. and I

  834. need to

  835. follow the

  836. wisdom that

  837. comes from

  838. God.

  839. The challenge

  840. that will

  841. come is

  842. that there

  843. will be

  844. very well

  845. meaning,

  846. respectable

  847. people who

  848. when they

  849. hear of

  850. your decision

  851. to eschew

  852. temporary

  853. wisdom,

  854. they will

  855. try to

  856. dissuade

  857. you.

  858. Just think

  859. if you

  860. were Joseph's

  861. friends,

  862. what advice

  863. would you

  864. have given

  865. him?

  866. One of

  867. the things

  868. that we

  869. have seen

  870. from this

  871. section is

  872. that there

  873. is a

  874. limitation to

  875. the wisdom

  876. of this

  877. age.

  878. We're going

  879. to have a

  880. little bit

  881. more understanding

  882. into this

  883. matter as we

  884. look into the

  885. next section

  886. as we're going

  887. to see about

  888. the power

  889. of God and

  890. the power of

  891. the Spirit

  892. of God.

  893. Section

  894. number three

  895. is going to

  896. be Spirit,

  897. the world

  898. versus God.

  899. It's verses

  900. 10 through

  901. 13.

  902. So once

  903. again,

  904. it's section

  905. three.

  906. We're looking

  907. at the

  908. Spirit,

  909. world

  910. versus God.

  911. So what

  912. Spirit guides

  913. our actions?

  914. Is it the

  915. Spirit of

  916. the world

  917. or the

  918. Spirit of

  919. God?

  920. The description

  921. of the Spirit

  922. of God takes

  923. place here in

  924. this section.

  925. We see

  926. beginning there

  927. in verse

  928. 10 is that

  929. the Spirit

  930. reveals God

  931. to people.

  932. that is how

  933. people come

  934. to an

  935. understanding

  936. of God.

  937. It is the

  938. work of

  939. the Spirit

  940. in their

  941. life.

  942. And that is

  943. why perhaps

  944. you have

  945. tried to

  946. communicate

  947. the message

  948. of God

  949. to other

  950. people

  951. and had

  952. no response

  953. for them.

  954. When it comes,

  955. we need a

  956. work of the

  957. Spirit to

  958. reveal God.

  959. We also see

  960. that the Spirit

  961. searches the

  962. depths of

  963. God.

  964. God.

  965. And then

  966. we see

  967. in verse

  968. 11 that

  969. the Spirit

  970. comprehends

  971. the thoughts

  972. of God.

  973. Now let

  974. us see a

  975. description of

  976. the Spirit

  977. of the

  978. world,

  979. which is not

  980. like the

  981. Spirit of

  982. God.

  983. Let us

  984. see there

  985. in verse

  986. 12 we

  987. find a

  988. definition,

  989. an understanding

  990. of the

  991. Spirit of

  992. this world.

  993. It tells

  994. us,

  995. now we

  996. have not

  997. received the

  998. Spirit of

  999. the world.

  1000. So who is

  1001. the we in

  1002. this church?

  1003. Who is the

  1004. ones who

  1005. have not

  1006. received the

  1007. Spirit of

  1008. the world?

  1009. It is the

  1010. church.

  1011. This is a

  1012. letter to

  1013. the church.

  1014. And so the

  1015. church has

  1016. not received

  1017. the Spirit

  1018. of the

  1019. world.

  1020. The Spirit

  1021. of the

  1022. world is

  1023. not for

  1024. the church.

  1025. The Spirit

  1026. of the world

  1027. guides those

  1028. who are

  1029. outside.

  1030. But we

  1031. as people

  1032. of the

  1033. church are

  1034. able to

  1035. follow the

  1036. Spirit of

  1037. God.

  1038. We are

  1039. able to

  1040. understand

  1041. God.

  1042. We see

  1043. that with

  1044. the work

  1045. of the

  1046. Spirit,

  1047. we might

  1048. be able to

  1049. follow who

  1050. God is.

  1051. It tells us

  1052. in verse

  1053. 12 that we

  1054. might understand

  1055. the things

  1056. freely given

  1057. us by

  1058. God.

  1059. We also

  1060. find that

  1061. this Spirit

  1062. teaches the

  1063. knowledge of

  1064. God.

  1065. it teaches

  1066. about who

  1067. God is.

  1068. It says,

  1069. we impart

  1070. this in

  1071. words not

  1072. taught by

  1073. human wisdom

  1074. but taught

  1075. by the

  1076. Spirit.

  1077. The Spirit

  1078. provides insight

  1079. and knowledge.

  1080. The Spirit

  1081. should be

  1082. guiding the

  1083. church and

  1084. giving it

  1085. information.

  1086. God is

  1087. to follow

  1088. God more

  1089. closely,

  1090. to make

  1091. bold decisions

  1092. on behalf

  1093. of God.

  1094. The question

  1095. that we will

  1096. find is,

  1097. how do we

  1098. use this

  1099. insight?

  1100. How do we

  1101. use this

  1102. knowledge of

  1103. which the

  1104. Spirit empowers

  1105. us?

  1106. we find

  1107. an example

  1108. of someone

  1109. who is

  1110. informed by

  1111. the Spirit

  1112. in the

  1113. Christmas

  1114. story.

  1115. And that

  1116. will come

  1117. from Simeon.

  1118. And Simeon

  1119. is someone

  1120. who is in

  1121. the temple.

  1122. And he is

  1123. in the temple

  1124. worshiping

  1125. God.

  1126. And we

  1127. find that

  1128. Simeon is

  1129. described as

  1130. righteous

  1131. and devout.

  1132. and the

  1133. Holy Spirit

  1134. was upon

  1135. him.

  1136. And following

  1137. the birth of

  1138. Jesus,

  1139. eight days

  1140. later,

  1141. he is brought

  1142. into the

  1143. temple for

  1144. dedication.

  1145. And when

  1146. he is brought

  1147. into the

  1148. temple for

  1149. dedication,

  1150. Simeon is

  1151. filled with

  1152. the Spirit

  1153. and has an

  1154. understanding

  1155. of who

  1156. Jesus is.

  1157. He looks

  1158. upon this

  1159. child that

  1160. has entered

  1161. the temple.

  1162. And he

  1163. sees this

  1164. is the

  1165. Savior of

  1166. the world.

  1167. This is the

  1168. one to whom

  1169. the prophets

  1170. look forward

  1171. to.

  1172. This is the

  1173. one to whom

  1174. God promised.

  1175. This is the

  1176. Messiah.

  1177. This is the

  1178. Christ.

  1179. And there

  1180. were many

  1181. people in

  1182. the temple

  1183. that day.

  1184. And many

  1185. people saw

  1186. Mary and

  1187. Joseph bring

  1188. that young

  1189. infant into

  1190. the temple.

  1191. But we

  1192. find Simeon,

  1193. unlike

  1194. most of

  1195. the people

  1196. in the

  1197. temple that

  1198. day,

  1199. was able

  1200. to look

  1201. upon him

  1202. and see

  1203. who he

  1204. really was.

  1205. Simeon

  1206. there

  1207. proclaims

  1208. as he

  1209. sees this

  1210. baby Jesus.

  1211. He says,

  1212. Lord,

  1213. Lord, now you

  1214. are letting

  1215. your servant

  1216. depart in

  1217. peace according

  1218. to your

  1219. words.

  1220. For my

  1221. eyes have

  1222. seen your

  1223. salvation that

  1224. you have

  1225. prepared in

  1226. the presence

  1227. of all

  1228. peoples,

  1229. a light for

  1230. revelation to

  1231. the Gentiles,

  1232. and for glory

  1233. to your

  1234. people Israel.

  1235. many people

  1236. saw the

  1237. baby that

  1238. day.

  1239. Simeon,

  1240. as a result

  1241. of the

  1242. Spirit,

  1243. saw the

  1244. Christ.

  1245. He saw

  1246. the Messiah.

  1247. Think back

  1248. for just a

  1249. moment.

  1250. We were

  1251. talking about

  1252. Joseph and

  1253. how Joseph

  1254. needed to

  1255. ignore the

  1256. wisdom of

  1257. his age,

  1258. the wisdom

  1259. of the

  1260. age.

  1261. What we

  1262. see now in

  1263. this section

  1264. is that there

  1265. are times

  1266. that we

  1267. need to

  1268. listen to

  1269. the Spirit.

  1270. As we

  1271. think of

  1272. putting these

  1273. two things

  1274. together,

  1275. ignore the

  1276. wisdom of

  1277. the age,

  1278. and listening

  1279. to the

  1280. Spirit,

  1281. we find

  1282. ourselves a

  1283. result.

  1284. At times,

  1285. we need to

  1286. be able to

  1287. move forward

  1288. based upon

  1289. the leading

  1290. of the

  1291. Spirit.

  1292. And when

  1293. we move

  1294. forward,

  1295. those times,

  1296. it might

  1297. be that

  1298. we need

  1299. to ignore

  1300. the wisdom

  1301. of the

  1302. age and

  1303. embrace the

  1304. leading of

  1305. God's Spirit

  1306. upon our

  1307. life.

  1308. And when

  1309. we make

  1310. these decisions,

  1311. we will

  1312. find that

  1313. these decisions

  1314. might be

  1315. doubted by

  1316. conventional

  1317. wisdom.

  1318. These

  1319. decisions

  1320. might be

  1321. doubted by

  1322. co-workers

  1323. or mentors

  1324. in your

  1325. workplace.

  1326. people

  1327. who

  1328. love you

  1329. and only

  1330. seek the

  1331. very best

  1332. for you.

  1333. These

  1334. decisions

  1335. where we

  1336. follow the

  1337. leading of

  1338. the Spirit

  1339. might be

  1340. doubted by

  1341. well-meaning

  1342. friends,

  1343. even well-meaning

  1344. friends who

  1345. are part of

  1346. your church

  1347. family.

  1348. And these

  1349. decisions at

  1350. times might

  1351. even be

  1352. doubted by

  1353. spiritual

  1354. mentors.

  1355. They might

  1356. say to you,

  1357. look at it

  1358. from this

  1359. perspective.

  1360. And hopefully

  1361. a good

  1362. spiritual mentor

  1363. would say,

  1364. you need to

  1365. follow the

  1366. Spirit.

  1367. They might

  1368. say to you,

  1369. I don't quite

  1370. see it,

  1371. but you need

  1372. to follow

  1373. the Spirit.

  1374. being led

  1375. by the

  1376. Spirit

  1377. is not

  1378. easy.

  1379. There are

  1380. moments when

  1381. you are led

  1382. by the

  1383. Spirit that

  1384. you will

  1385. need to

  1386. make a

  1387. bold choice.

  1388. And when

  1389. you make

  1390. that choice,

  1391. it will

  1392. feel very

  1393. lonely.

  1394. But we

  1395. know that we

  1396. have the

  1397. Spirit with

  1398. us.

  1399. And as

  1400. difficult as

  1401. those choices

  1402. might feel,

  1403. ignoring the

  1404. leading of the

  1405. Spirit is

  1406. far worse.

  1407. Fourth section

  1408. that we want

  1409. to look at

  1410. is going to

  1411. be the

  1412. person.

  1413. Natural

  1414. versus the

  1415. spiritual.

  1416. That's going

  1417. to be verses

  1418. 14 through

  1419. 16.

  1420. So once

  1421. again,

  1422. the fourth

  1423. section is

  1424. the person.

  1425. Natural

  1426. versus

  1427. spiritual.

  1428. The natural

  1429. person here

  1430. in the

  1431. Scripture is

  1432. described as

  1433. how they

  1434. relate to

  1435. God.

  1436. And in

  1437. verse 14,

  1438. we see

  1439. that the

  1440. natural

  1441. person does

  1442. not accept

  1443. the Spirit

  1444. of God.

  1445. Also,

  1446. the Spirit

  1447. of God to

  1448. the natural

  1449. person seems

  1450. like folly.

  1451. And the

  1452. natural person

  1453. cannot understand

  1454. these things.

  1455. The spiritual

  1456. person,

  1457. however,

  1458. there in

  1459. verse 15,

  1460. we find that

  1461. they are able

  1462. to judge all

  1463. things.

  1464. and they

  1465. are able

  1466. to be

  1467. judged

  1468. by

  1469. new

  1470. one.

  1471. Now,

  1472. judgment

  1473. seems like

  1474. an odd

  1475. quality

  1476. to introduce

  1477. at this

  1478. point.

  1479. We want

  1480. to keep

  1481. the context

  1482. of what's

  1483. taking place

  1484. in our

  1485. understanding

  1486. of this

  1487. passage.

  1488. Within

  1489. the

  1490. Corinthian

  1491. church,

  1492. so this

  1493. letter is

  1494. to church

  1495. and court.

  1496. So within

  1497. this church,

  1498. there are

  1499. divisions,

  1500. there are

  1501. these factions

  1502. of superiority,

  1503. people who

  1504. think they're

  1505. better,

  1506. more spiritual

  1507. than others.

  1508. There is

  1509. also spiritual

  1510. immaturity.

  1511. They have

  1512. wrong beliefs

  1513. and wrong

  1514. conduct.

  1515. One of the

  1516. problems with

  1517. spiritual

  1518. immaturity

  1519. is that the

  1520. immature

  1521. do not

  1522. realize

  1523. their

  1524. deficiencies.

  1525. They don't

  1526. know what

  1527. they don't

  1528. know,

  1529. and that

  1530. can lead

  1531. to problems.

  1532. problems.

  1533. And part

  1534. of this

  1535. is as

  1536. in this

  1537. unhealthy

  1538. context

  1539. where we

  1540. have divisions

  1541. in spiritual

  1542. maturity.

  1543. The author

  1544. is making

  1545. this point.

  1546. The spiritual

  1547. person,

  1548. the one

  1549. who is

  1550. guided

  1551. by the

  1552. spirit

  1553. of God,

  1554. the spiritual

  1555. person

  1556. is able

  1557. to speak

  1558. on God's

  1559. behalf.

  1560. They are

  1561. able to

  1562. be God's

  1563. advocate

  1564. in this

  1565. situation.

  1566. as God's

  1567. advocate

  1568. in this

  1569. tense

  1570. situation,

  1571. in this

  1572. divisive

  1573. situation,

  1574. the spiritual

  1575. person can

  1576. judge others,

  1577. can say,

  1578. that's wrong,

  1579. this is right.

  1580. You should

  1581. stop doing

  1582. this,

  1583. and you

  1584. should start

  1585. doing that.

  1586. Also,

  1587. we find

  1588. that the

  1589. spiritual

  1590. person

  1591. then is

  1592. above

  1593. the judgment

  1594. of the

  1595. natural

  1596. person.

  1597. So those

  1598. who are

  1599. not

  1600. empowered

  1601. by the

  1602. spirit

  1603. of

  1604. God

  1605. don't

  1606. have

  1607. the

  1608. same

  1609. ability

  1610. to

  1611. judge

  1612. those

  1613. who

  1614. are

  1615. powered

  1616. by God,

  1617. powered

  1618. by the

  1619. spirit,

  1620. because the

  1621. natural

  1622. person

  1623. doesn't

  1624. understand

  1625. the

  1626. ways

  1627. of

  1628. God.

  1629. So

  1630. their

  1631. judgment

  1632. would

  1633. be

  1634. in

  1635. error

  1636. and

  1637. not

  1638. correct.

  1639. We

  1640. see here

  1641. that the

  1642. capacity

  1643. to judge

  1644. a

  1645. situation,

  1646. to judge

  1647. a situation

  1648. in this

  1649. church,

  1650. comes

  1651. from a

  1652. person's

  1653. understanding

  1654. of God.

  1655. We see

  1656. in verse

  1657. 16,

  1658. it says,

  1659. for who

  1660. has

  1661. understood

  1662. the

  1663. mind

  1664. of

  1665. the

  1666. Lord

  1667. so

  1668. as

  1669. to

  1670. instruct

  1671. him?

  1672. It's a

  1673. rhetorical

  1674. question

  1675. coming

  1676. from

  1677. Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:18

  1678. chapter

  1679. 40

  1680. verse

  1681. 18.

  1682. No

  1683. one's

  1684. understood

  1685. the

  1686. mind

  1687. of

  1688. the

  1689. Lord,

  1690. so

  1691. no

  1692. one

  1693. can

  1694. question

  1695. him.

  1696. Yet

  1697. we

  1698. see

  1699. it

  1700. here

  1701. in

  1702. verse

  1703. 16,

  1704. the

  1705. spiritual

  1706. person

  1707. does

  1708. have

  1709. the

  1710. mind

  1711. of

  1712. Christ.

  1713. And

  1714. with

  1715. this

  1716. with

  1717. the

  1718. mind

  1719. of

  1720. Christ,

  1721. this

  1722. spiritual

  1723. person

  1724. finds

  1725. himself

  1726. in a

  1727. point

  1728. where

  1729. they

  1730. are

  1731. equipped

  1732. to

  1733. judge

  1734. and lead

  1735. this

  1736. church

  1737. in

  1738. Corinth.

  1739. And

  1740. just a

  1741. note on

  1742. this,

  1743. it seems

  1744. here

  1745. that the

  1746. author,

  1747. Paul,

  1748. is setting

  1749. himself up

  1750. to be able

  1751. to speak

  1752. very directly

  1753. and bluntly

  1754. and in

  1755. judgment

  1756. at times

  1757. of this

  1758. church.

  1759. we

  1760. will

  1761. see

  1762. as we

  1763. move

  1764. forward

  1765. in

  1766. our

  1767. study

  1768. of

  1769. 1

  1770. Corinthians.

  1771. There's

  1772. a

  1773. possible

  1774. misinterpretation

  1775. of this

  1776. passage.

  1777. The

  1778. spiritual

  1779. person

  1780. could

  1781. say,

  1782. I can

  1783. judge

  1784. you,

  1785. you

  1786. can't

  1787. judge

  1788. me,

  1789. woohoo,

  1790. and while

  1791. they wouldn't

  1792. quite say

  1793. it with

  1794. that sound

  1795. in their

  1796. voice,

  1797. they might

  1798. be thinking

  1799. it with

  1800. that in

  1801. their

  1802. head.

  1803. And the

  1804. spiritual

  1805. person can

  1806. become

  1807. aloof,

  1808. an elite.

  1809. They begin

  1810. to think,

  1811. oh,

  1812. I've got

  1813. some sort

  1814. of extra

  1815. blessing,

  1816. extra

  1817. insight.

  1818. There's

  1819. things I

  1820. understand

  1821. that you're

  1822. not able

  1823. to see

  1824. because of

  1825. your simple

  1826. mindedness.

  1827. And once

  1828. again,

  1829. while they

  1830. might not

  1831. say it,

  1832. they might

  1833. think it.

  1834. And this

  1835. results in

  1836. spiritual

  1837. elitism.

  1838. And that's

  1839. obviously wrong.

  1840. As I say it

  1841. with that voice,

  1842. you know it's

  1843. wrong.

  1844. As I say it

  1845. to you,

  1846. you're like,

  1847. that's terrible,

  1848. that's a bad

  1849. idea.

  1850. And part

  1851. of it as we

  1852. come to this

  1853. type of

  1854. misuse of

  1855. this passage,

  1856. what could

  1857. be a misuse

  1858. of this

  1859. passage?

  1860. One of the

  1861. things is

  1862. that we

  1863. find that

  1864. mentality is

  1865. absolutely

  1866. disjointed from

  1867. the rest of

  1868. scripture.

  1869. The spiritual

  1870. elitism is not

  1871. something you

  1872. find in place

  1873. in the

  1874. scripture.

  1875. We're all

  1876. in need of

  1877. Jesus.

  1878. We're all

  1879. sinners.

  1880. There's not

  1881. the spiritual

  1882. elitism.

  1883. The second

  1884. thing that we

  1885. can even

  1886. think here in

  1887. this context

  1888. as we look

  1889. at that is

  1890. that a big

  1891. problem in

  1892. the Corinthian

  1893. church was

  1894. spiritual

  1895. elitism.

  1896. these people

  1897. thought they

  1898. were better

  1899. than other

  1900. people.

  1901. So being

  1902. better than

  1903. another person

  1904. isn't going

  1905. to solve the

  1906. problem of

  1907. being better

  1908. than another

  1909. person.

  1910. Actually I

  1911. think it's

  1912. probably just

  1913. going to

  1914. make it

  1915. worse.

  1916. So as we

  1917. look at this

  1918. we've seen a

  1919. natural person

  1920. the natural

  1921. person cannot

  1922. follow the

  1923. things of

  1924. God.

  1925. The spiritual

  1926. person however

  1927. does understand

  1928. the things

  1929. of God.

  1930. As we think

  1931. of this

  1932. difference between

  1933. the natural

  1934. person and the

  1935. spiritual person

  1936. I want you

  1937. to reflect

  1938. upon the

  1939. shepherds

  1940. who learned

  1941. of Jesus'

  1942. birth.

  1943. So the

  1944. shepherds are

  1945. out in the

  1946. night working

  1947. and their

  1948. night is

  1949. interrupted

  1950. unexpectedly.

  1951. And there

  1952. in verse 2

  1953. we find that

  1954. angels suddenly

  1955. appear with a

  1956. message about

  1957. Jesus'

  1958. birth.

  1959. They say to

  1960. the shepherds

  1961. I bring you

  1962. good news of

  1963. great joy that

  1964. will be for

  1965. all the

  1966. people.

  1967. the angels

  1968. then provide

  1969. the shepherds

  1970. with a place

  1971. and a sign

  1972. the place

  1973. being the

  1974. city of

  1975. David

  1976. that's

  1977. Bethlehem

  1978. and a sign

  1979. you will

  1980. find the

  1981. baby in

  1982. a manger.

  1983. The angels

  1984. begin to

  1985. praise God

  1986. glory to

  1987. God in the

  1988. highest and

  1989. on earth

  1990. peace among

  1991. those with

  1992. whom he is

  1993. pleased.

  1994. So the

  1995. question I

  1996. have for you

  1997. is how will

  1998. the shepherds

  1999. respond to

  2000. this?

  2001. And while we

  2002. know the

  2003. ending of the

  2004. story that

  2005. the shepherds

  2006. do go to

  2007. find who

  2008. Jesus is

  2009. I must ask

  2010. you how

  2011. would a

  2012. natural person

  2013. respond to

  2014. this situation?

  2015. And while we

  2016. might like to

  2017. think that the

  2018. natural person

  2019. would say

  2020. wow I've

  2021. just encountered

  2022. angels I've

  2023. got to go see

  2024. what they're

  2025. talking about

  2026. I feel like I

  2027. know some

  2028. natural people

  2029. who would say

  2030. hmm that's

  2031. interesting

  2032. just quite not

  2033. my thing

  2034. oh I think

  2035. I must have

  2036. got hit on

  2037. the head

  2038. by something

  2039. and heard

  2040. something

  2041. natural people

  2042. would come up

  2043. with all sorts

  2044. of reasons

  2045. why that's

  2046. not the

  2047. work of

  2048. God

  2049. and when

  2050. they encounter

  2051. the work of

  2052. God

  2053. they simply

  2054. disregard

  2055. they come up

  2056. with some

  2057. sort of

  2058. natural

  2059. explanation

  2060. for these

  2061. supernatural

  2062. events

  2063. the spiritual

  2064. person however

  2065. is going to

  2066. follow the

  2067. pattern of

  2068. the shepherd

  2069. and the

  2070. pattern of

  2071. the shepherd

  2072. said

  2073. let us go

  2074. over to

  2075. Bethlehem

  2076. and see

  2077. this thing

  2078. that has

  2079. happened

  2080. which the

  2081. Lord has

  2082. made known

  2083. to us

  2084. and they

  2085. went

  2086. with

  2087. haste

  2088. that's what

  2089. the spiritual

  2090. person does

  2091. they hear

  2092. Jesus

  2093. and they

  2094. say

  2095. let us

  2096. go

  2097. with haste

  2098. as we

  2099. come to

  2100. the conclusion

  2101. of the message

  2102. this morning

  2103. I have a

  2104. question for

  2105. you

  2106. are you

  2107. a natural

  2108. person

  2109. did you hear

  2110. the message

  2111. that the

  2112. angels

  2113. brought to

  2114. the shepherds

  2115. I bring

  2116. you

  2117. good news

  2118. of great

  2119. joy

  2120. that will

  2121. be for

  2122. all

  2123. people

  2124. that is

  2125. the message

  2126. of the

  2127. angels

  2128. to the

  2129. shepherd

  2130. and that

  2131. is the

  2132. message

  2133. to each

  2134. of us

  2135. today

  2136. be you

  2137. a spiritual

  2138. person

  2139. be you

  2140. a natural

  2141. person

  2142. there is

  2143. good news

  2144. of great

  2145. joy

  2146. and what

  2147. is that

  2148. good news

  2149. that good

  2150. news

  2151. is Jesus

  2152. saves

  2153. and if

  2154. you are

  2155. a natural

  2156. person

  2157. I have

  2158. more

  2159. encouraging

  2160. news

  2161. for you

  2162. today

  2163. there are

  2164. spiritual

  2165. people

  2166. in this

  2167. room

  2168. but at

  2169. one time

  2170. the spiritual

  2171. people in

  2172. this room

  2173. were natural

  2174. people

  2175. and they

  2176. chose to

  2177. embrace

  2178. that message

  2179. of good

  2180. news

  2181. they chose

  2182. to embrace

  2183. that message

  2184. that Jesus

  2185. saves

  2186. at some

  2187. point

  2188. we find

  2189. ourselves

  2190. with the

  2191. offer

  2192. will we

  2193. accept

  2194. the message

  2195. that Jesus

  2196. saves

  2197. at the

  2198. very start

  2199. of my

  2200. message

  2201. this morning

  2202. I spoke

  2203. of my

  2204. music choice

  2205. when I was

  2206. getting ready

  2207. and it's

  2208. unusual

  2209. combination

  2210. of styles

  2211. I mentioned

  2212. today

  2213. that we

  2214. were a

  2215. bit of an

  2216. unusual

  2217. combination

  2218. of content

  2219. my stated

  2220. hope before

  2221. we started

  2222. is that we

  2223. would use

  2224. this unusual

  2225. combination

  2226. to make

  2227. beautiful

  2228. melodious

  2229. music

  2230. the possibility

  2231. it was

  2232. possible

  2233. I might

  2234. have made

  2235. a dissonant

  2236. and harmonious

  2237. mess

  2238. but if you're

  2239. a natural

  2240. person

  2241. here's what I

  2242. want you to

  2243. hear today

  2244. if you are

  2245. a natural

  2246. person

  2247. I think

  2248. there is

  2249. the distinct

  2250. possibility

  2251. that your

  2252. life

  2253. is a

  2254. dissonant

  2255. in harmonious

  2256. mess

  2257. and you

  2258. may have

  2259. covered it

  2260. up

  2261. with some

  2262. sort of

  2263. veneer

  2264. of earthy

  2265. success

  2266. but inside

  2267. you

  2268. are a

  2269. mess

  2270. my hope

  2271. for you

  2272. today

  2273. is that

  2274. you will

  2275. accept

  2276. the salvation

  2277. that Jesus

  2278. offers

  2279. and bring

  2280. a beautiful

  2281. harmony

  2282. to your

  2283. life

  2284. let me

  2285. close this

  2286. in prayer

  2287. God we

  2288. come before

  2289. you this

  2290. morning

  2291. and we

  2292. are thankful

  2293. God that

  2294. you did

  2295. send your

  2296. son into

  2297. this world

  2298. God we

  2299. are thankful

  2300. for the

  2301. great love

  2302. that you

  2303. have for us

  2304. God that

  2305. you have

  2306. made a

  2307. way for

  2308. us to

  2309. have

  2310. fellowship

  2311. and peace

  2312. with you

  2313. God and

  2314. that is

  2315. through the

  2316. work of

  2317. your son

  2318. Jesus

  2319. Christ

  2320. God we

  2321. come before

  2322. you this

  2323. morning and

  2324. give you the

  2325. glory and

  2326. the honor for

  2327. the great

  2328. salvation that

  2329. you have

  2330. provided

  2331. amen
