  1. Good morning.

  2. Sorry, somebody was playing with this mic, so you guys do what you need to do to hear me less or more sound, guys.

  3. I'm not sure who sent out the message yesterday for Daylight Savings Time. Thanks a lot.

  4. I got it last night, like 7, 8 o'clock, and that's the first time in a long time I remember being caught off guard by Daylight Savings Time.

  5. So, thank you, but thanks a lot.

  6. This morning, we're going to be hitting 1 Corinthians 10.

  7. What I'd like to do is just go back and do a quick summary just to bring us up to this point.

  8. Chapter 8, if you remember, Paul was exhorting the Corinthian believers.

  9. Am I fading in and out? Is that okay? Okay.

  10. If I am, somebody just throw your hand off and I'll just grab the other mic because I don't want to be a distraction.

  11. We have Paul exhorting the Corinthian believers not to eat meat sacrificed to idols,

  12. and the big reason being that they won't cause newer Christians, new believers, to stumble and cause them to fall back to some of their old practices,

  13. possibly pulling them back into sin and out of the salvation that they may not have been part of yet because of that.

  14. So, he says the main point being Christian love requires that we forego or give up our rights and not to insist on our rights at the expense of others.

  15. Last week, Sean brought to us chapter 9, a difficult passage for a pastor,

  16. and that was Paul telling us about how he had a right to get paid from the church,

  17. or in his preaching of the gospel, he had that right, and yet he intentionally gave that up for the sake of the gospel.

  18. And then at the end of the chapter, if you remember, he's talking of self-control, practicing self-control.

  19. So, like an athlete, like someone who is going to the Olympics, there's a focus on the goal.

  20. There's a specific goal that a runner is to be aiming for.

  21. So, Paul calls us to run as if we're going for that prize and doing with purpose and not to settle or just to coast through life.

  22. So, now that brings us to chapter 10 this morning, and it starts out with the word for.

  23. However, Paul is connecting this passage back to these last two chapters because he's going to be building on the idea of idolatry

  24. and not falling back into former sins.

  25. And in thinking of that, there's three points that we're going to be looking at this morning, and we'll go through those.

  26. But the main idea is that there's blessing and there's strength that we get from following the Lord.

  27. There's also defeat and death that comes from following idolatry or following after the world.

  28. So, our first point this morning is past warnings.

  29. These are some warnings that Paul starts out talking to the church of Corinth about.

  30. So, if you take a look at verse 1, he says,

  31. For, because of what I've been talking about, I don't want you to be unaware brothers, translated brethren or brothers and sisters.

  32. For our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,

  33. and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

  34. and all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink.

  35. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

  36. In these first couple verses, we see Paul laying out this interesting package for us, if you will,

  37. where he's making a connection back to the Old Testament.

  38. He's making a connection for the church in Corinth back to the Old Testament,

  39. and he does that to encourage them and also to show them that they are part of the family of God.

  40. He's also making that connection for us.

  41. As we're reading this, we're not just spectators,

  42. but we're part of the congregation as well that he's speaking to.

  43. First, he says in verse 1,

  44. Notice Paul doesn't say,

  45. It's not his Jewish lineage,

  46. but it's our Jewish lineage that he's connecting to,

  47. referring to the Israelites that followed Moses out of Egypt.

  48. Those were God's chosen people.

  49. Paul is calling them our fathers,

  50. highlighting the fact that salvation has come to all who believe in Christ.

  51. It's not just the special Jewish select group,

  52. but it's now open to Jews and Gentiles.

  53. So let's listen to what Paul else,

  54. what else Paul unpacks for us here.

  55. He says,

  56. Our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea.

  57. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

  58. A reference to God protecting the Israelites,

  59. leading them through the cloud.

  60. If you remember,

  61. the cloud stood in their way when the Egyptian army was coming.

  62. The cloud also provided a way for them to follow where they should go in the wilderness.

  63. And it was also used when they were miraculously brought through the Red Sea.

  64. And check out the next part in verse 3.

  65. And all ate the same spiritual fruit,

  66. and all drank the same spiritual drink,

  67. for they drank from the same spiritual rock that followed them,

  68. and the rock was Christ.

  69. Now that sounds a lot like the Lord's Supper,

  70. a communion that we take part of now.

  71. So Paul is making a connection for us.

  72. Back to the Old Testament,

  73. to a type of Lord's Supper,

  74. to a communion that the Israelites were part of.

  75. If you remember,

  76. manna was the physical food that fed them.

  77. But we know it didn't come from Whole Foods or Stop and Shop.

  78. It was given to them supernaturally by God.

  79. The same with the water.

  80. The water didn't come to them in bottles that they brought from Egypt,

  81. but it came from a rock.

  82. I don't know how many other people have seen water come from a rock,

  83. but that's a pretty supernatural thing.

  84. So we're reminded here that that rock that was with them was Christ.

  85. So we have the Israelites.

  86. They believed Moses.

  87. They followed him.

  88. They're baptized into Moses

  89. as he takes them through the cloud and through the Red Sea,

  90. and they're delivered from the Egyptians.

  91. Christ was that rock that sustained them.

  92. And now we as believers of Christ,

  93. we get baptized into him,

  94. similar to how they were baptized in Moses

  95. as he led them through the wilderness.

  96. So what's the point?

  97. What's Paul trying to say?

  98. The Israelites were rescued from Pharaoh in slavery,

  99. and they were brought across the Red Sea.

  100. They were delivered from the Egyptian army.

  101. They were provided for in the wilderness.

  102. However, what's verse 5 say?

  103. Nevertheless, with most of them,

  104. God was not pleased,

  105. for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

  106. That brings us to our first point,

  107. which is past warnings.

  108. It's what Paul is giving us here,

  109. is warnings for things that have taken place.

  110. Now these things took place,

  111. verse 6, as examples for us,

  112. that we might not desire evil as they did.

  113. The NIV translates that

  114. to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things.

  115. You know, as a parent,

  116. you do these things.

  117. That is, you warn them of things

  118. that can cause danger to them.

  119. Don't do that.

  120. You might fall.

  121. Don't touch that.

  122. It's hot.

  123. Right?

  124. Hopefully they don't touch it.

  125. A lot of times they touch it.

  126. That's how they learn.

  127. They got burned.

  128. You're starting off college.

  129. You're starting a job.

  130. People warn you of things.

  131. But what tends to happen,

  132. we think that we're a little smarter.

  133. Maybe we're a little quicker.

  134. I won't fall into that like you fell into

  135. because I'm special

  136. or whatever the reason is.

  137. I remember doing that in college.

  138. I needed to make up some courses

  139. and I took three courses over the summer.

  140. And everybody told me,

  141. don't take that many.

  142. Summer is short.

  143. Everything is packed.

  144. You know, most of the time

  145. you only want to do one,

  146. two at the most.

  147. It's fine.

  148. I got plenty of time.

  149. Most of the courses are easy.

  150. One of them was a religion class.

  151. That should be cake.

  152. So what ended up happening

  153. is I took all three

  154. and I ended up dropping

  155. one or two of them

  156. or I at least dropped one.

  157. I don't remember if the second one

  158. I just did really poorly at

  159. or if I finally gave up and dropped it.

  160. But I thought I was different.

  161. I thought I could do it

  162. and I couldn't

  163. and I didn't heed the warning

  164. and I failed at it.

  165. And that's what Paul

  166. is doing for us here.

  167. He's giving us warnings

  168. based on failures

  169. that the Israelites

  170. went through

  171. in the Old Testament.

  172. Verse 7.

  173. Do not be idolaters

  174. as some of them were.

  175. As it is written,

  176. the people sat down

  177. to eat and drink

  178. and rose up to play.

  179. That doesn't sound so bad

  180. just looking at that quotation.

  181. But it's a reference

  182. back to the time

  183. when Moses went up

  184. on the mountain

  185. to get the Ten Commandments

  186. to meet with the Lord

  187. and what happens?

  188. The Israelites

  189. get impatient

  190. and they decide

  191. to make for themselves

  192. a golden calf.

  193. Their God,

  194. their new God,

  195. little g,

  196. they even said

  197. that this new God

  198. delivered them

  199. out of Egypt

  200. and they worshipped it.

  201. They gave,

  202. they offered burnt offerings

  203. to it

  204. just like

  205. the burnt offerings

  206. they offered to God.

  207. They stopped believing

  208. that fast.

  209. They stopped believing

  210. in God,

  211. the one who had

  212. rescued them

  213. out of Egypt

  214. and they started

  215. following after

  216. something that they made

  217. with their hands.

  218. Paul says,

  219. watch out,

  220. don't be an idolater.

  221. Verse 8.

  222. We must not indulge

  223. in sexual immorality

  224. as some of them did

  225. and 23,000 fell

  226. in a single day.

  227. This is a reference

  228. to Numbers 25.

  229. When the people

  230. of Israel

  231. began to mix

  232. with the people

  233. of Moab,

  234. the Bible actually

  235. says that they began

  236. to whore

  237. with the daughters

  238. of Moab.

  239. That sounds pretty rough.

  240. Why would God

  241. use that terminology?

  242. Because the people

  243. worshipped Baal

  244. and Israelites

  245. were called

  246. to worship God.

  247. What happens

  248. when they start

  249. to intermingle

  250. and their families

  251. start to begin

  252. and grow?

  253. You worship God

  254. and somebody else

  255. worships an idol

  256. and you have more people

  257. that are following

  258. after an idol

  259. than they are

  260. following after God.

  261. So their focus

  262. was quickly changed

  263. from being

  264. the people of God

  265. to a people

  266. that just worships

  267. another idol

  268. in this world.

  269. This sexual immorality

  270. is,

  271. I don't have to tell you

  272. that that's

  273. a big area,

  274. a big pitfall

  275. that we can fall into.

  276. If you're not married

  277. this morning,

  278. be careful.

  279. You want to make sure

  280. that the person

  281. that you look for

  282. or the person

  283. that you're with now

  284. their heart

  285. belongs to Christ.

  286. Because if not,

  287. if their heart

  288. belongs to the world

  289. and your heart

  290. starts to become

  291. connected to them,

  292. guess where your heart

  293. is going?

  294. It's generally not

  295. to God

  296. and bringing them

  297. with you.

  298. It usually will pull you

  299. both towards the world.

  300. God warns about that.

  301. Moses warns about that.

  302. Here Paul is warning

  303. about that.

  304. So I'm telling you,

  305. don't go there.

  306. Verse 9,

  307. another warning.

  308. We must not put Christ

  309. to the test

  310. as some of them did

  311. and were destroyed

  312. by serpents.

  313. If you remember

  314. the story of the serpent,

  315. this is referring to that

  316. in Numbers 21.

  317. It says this

  318. in verses 4 to 6,

  319. and the people

  320. became impatient

  321. on the way

  322. another time

  323. where they just

  324. couldn't wait

  325. on the Lord.

  326. And the people

  327. spoke against God

  328. and against Moses.

  329. Why have you brought

  330. us out of Egypt

  331. to die in the wilderness?

  332. But there's no food

  333. and no water

  334. and we loathe

  335. this worthless food.

  336. So the Lord

  337. sent fiery serpents

  338. among his people

  339. and they bit them

  340. so that many people

  341. of Israel died.

  342. They tested God

  343. because they became

  344. impatient

  345. and as a result

  346. many of them died.

  347. Verse 10,

  348. another warning.

  349. Nor grumble

  350. as some of them did

  351. and were destroyed

  352. by the destroyer.

  353. There were several

  354. occasions that we

  355. can go back to

  356. in the wilderness

  357. where the people

  358. of Israel

  359. grumbled against God.

  360. They grumbled

  361. against Moses

  362. which ultimately

  363. is against God

  364. and they also

  365. grumbled directly

  366. against God

  367. and what his plan

  368. for them was.

  369. And this was met

  370. with serious consequences.

  371. In verse 11,

  372. Now these things

  373. happened to them

  374. as an example

  375. but they were written

  376. down for our instruction

  377. on whom the end

  378. of the ages has come.

  379. Sounds a little weird

  380. but it's really pretty simple.

  381. Who is that?

  382. The end of the ages

  383. has come

  384. to all those

  385. that are right now.

  386. Anything on,

  387. anybody on this side

  388. of the cross

  389. and until eternity

  390. until the Lord comes back

  391. is the end of the ages.

  392. So that's us.

  393. These are examples

  394. written down

  395. for our instruction.

  396. And why is Paul

  397. writing down

  398. these things

  399. for our instruction?

  400. That brings us

  401. to our second point.

  402. These were warnings

  403. that took place

  404. many years ago

  405. but the dangers

  406. are still here

  407. for us now.

  408. Our second point

  409. is present dangers.

  410. These are dangers

  411. that the Corinthian believers

  412. had.

  413. They were also dangers

  414. that we currently have.

  415. They may look

  416. a little different.

  417. Our lives may look

  418. a little different.

  419. Things around us

  420. may look a little different

  421. but the dangers

  422. are still there

  423. nonetheless.

  424. Verse 12 says this,

  425. Therefore let anyone

  426. who thinks he stands

  427. take heed lest he fall.

  428. Don't be overconfident.

  429. This is what we see

  430. taking place

  431. in the previous chapter

  432. with people thinking

  433. that they can,

  434. they're strong enough

  435. to go back

  436. to the pagan temple

  437. and worship

  438. the same way

  439. they used to worship

  440. before they knew God.

  441. Don't think that you

  442. can stand strong

  443. and face sin

  444. and it not affect you.

  445. It's going to affect you.

  446. The idea,

  447. the point isn't to see

  448. how close to sin

  449. you can play with.

  450. The point is just

  451. flee sin.

  452. It's like with a fire.

  453. Don't see how close

  454. you can get.

  455. At some point

  456. you're going to get burned

  457. and realize

  458. you got too close.

  459. Verse 13,

  460. No temptation

  461. has ever taken you

  462. that is not common

  463. to man.

  464. When you're tempted,

  465. what you're tempted with

  466. is not anything new.

  467. Basically,

  468. it was what Paul

  469. is saying.

  470. There isn't a new

  471. big temptation

  472. that you're going

  473. to meet tomorrow

  474. that isn't something new

  475. that thousands of other

  476. people haven't struggled with.

  477. It isn't anything new.

  478. It wasn't anything new

  479. for the Israelites,

  480. the people in Corinth,

  481. and it's not for us

  482. as well.

  483. But,

  484. and we got verse 13,

  485. God is faithful.

  486. Amen to that.

  487. God is faithful.

  488. And he will not let you

  489. be tempted beyond

  490. your ability.

  491. But with the temptation

  492. he will also provide

  493. the way of escape

  494. that you may be able

  495. to endure it.

  496. God is faithful.

  497. Start with that.

  498. Before you deal

  499. with the temptation

  500. and how you're going

  501. to get out of it,

  502. remember that God

  503. is faithful.

  504. God is faithful.

  505. He was faithful

  506. to the Israelites.

  507. He was faithful

  508. to the people

  509. in Corinth

  510. and he's faithful

  511. to his people

  512. here in 2018.

  513. Now,

  514. if we focus in

  515. on the last part

  516. of that verse,

  517. but with the temptation

  518. he will also provide

  519. a way of escape

  520. that you may be able

  521. to endure it.

  522. Notice Paul doesn't say

  523. that you may be able

  524. to skip over it.

  525. as you walk

  526. through your temptation

  527. or as you walk

  528. through your day,

  529. whatever that looks like,

  530. and temptations

  531. slowly approach you

  532. as some do,

  533. there may be also

  534. those temptations

  535. that just stand

  536. right in your way.

  537. And God's not saying

  538. I'm going to pick you up

  539. and I'm going to lift you

  540. over top of your temptation

  541. so you don't have

  542. to deal with it.

  543. There's not a secret

  544. secret tunnel

  545. that might be opened up

  546. for us

  547. where we slide underneath

  548. and we can pop out

  549. the other side

  550. and,

  551. whoo,

  552. I didn't even have

  553. to worry about that.

  554. That was pretty cool.

  555. No.

  556. He says he will provide

  557. a way of escape

  558. that you can endure it.

  559. When we face temptation,

  560. he does provide

  561. that way of escape,

  562. but it requires

  563. something of us

  564. as Christians

  565. to endure that.

  566. And then we fall back

  567. on the beginning part

  568. of that

  569. that we're reminded of

  570. where God is faithful.

  571. verse 14,

  572. therefore,

  573. my beloved,

  574. therefore,

  575. we get kind of

  576. a connecting back

  577. to what he was

  578. talking about.

  579. Therefore,

  580. because our fathers

  581. who desired evil

  582. were idolaters,

  583. who indulged

  584. in sexual immorality,

  585. who put Christ

  586. to the test,

  587. who grumbled,

  588. don't be overconfident.

  589. These are all the things

  590. he's been saying

  591. so that you aren't

  592. overtaken.

  593. he says,

  594. flee from idolatry.

  595. Flee from the desires

  596. of the flesh

  597. and run to God's desires

  598. for you.

  599. We're going to get back

  600. to that.

  601. That's a big one.

  602. We're going to come back

  603. to that in just a minute,

  604. but we're going to go on

  605. with these verses

  606. just to break them up

  607. a little bit.

  608. Let's look at verse 16.

  609. The cup of blessing

  610. that we bless,

  611. referring to communion,

  612. referring to the Lord's Supper

  613. here when the Lord's Supper

  614. started,

  615. if you remember,

  616. Jesus broke the bread

  617. and he blessed it.

  618. When we have communion,

  619. we also give thanks

  620. and bless it as well,

  621. just like Jesus did

  622. as he started the Lord's Supper

  623. back before his crucifixion.

  624. But Paul says,

  625. is it not a participation,

  626. this is verse 16,

  627. is it not a participation

  628. that is a fellowship

  629. or a sharing

  630. in the blood of Christ?

  631. The bread that we break,

  632. is it not a participation

  633. in the body of Christ?

  634. So here we pick up

  635. that Paul uses this word

  636. participation twice here,

  637. and that's the sharing

  638. of one another

  639. as we participate

  640. in communion.

  641. We are sharing that

  642. with one another.

  643. It's founded in Christ.

  644. It's founded on his death

  645. and resurrection.

  646. And we as believers

  647. get to share that

  648. with one another

  649. and we get to be

  650. a part of that.

  651. Verse 17,

  652. because there is one bread,

  653. we who are many

  654. are one body,

  655. for we all partake

  656. of the one bread.

  657. The one bread

  658. that he's talking about here

  659. is the body of Christ

  660. that was broken for us.

  661. The many that he is talking about

  662. is us as believers.

  663. We are the church,

  664. but we're one body in Christ.

  665. There are many believers

  666. in Christ,

  667. but there's just one body.

  668. One body in Christ

  669. is what he's talking about.

  670. And we partake

  671. of the one bread,

  672. the one bread being Christ.

  673. Let's look at another

  674. couple verses

  675. that might be helpful for this

  676. if it's not quite clear.

  677. If you flip over

  678. to 1 Corinthians 12,

  679. just ahead two chapters,

  680. I know somebody else

  681. is going to preach this.

  682. I'm just going to,

  683. I won't stay long,

  684. take what you're going

  685. to be speaking on,

  686. but I find it's really helpful

  687. for this as well.

  688. Chapter 12, verse 12,

  689. For just as the body is one

  690. and has many members,

  691. and all the members

  692. of the body,

  693. though many,

  694. they're one body.

  695. So it is with Christ.

  696. Christ is one body

  697. of which we,

  698. who are many,

  699. are part of.

  700. You are part of the body

  701. of Christ.

  702. This is very important,

  703. so I just want to hang out

  704. here for a minute.

  705. If you're standing

  706. this morning,

  707. you're sitting,

  708. I know I'm not talking

  709. about that,

  710. I'm talking about

  711. where you are,

  712. where you find yourself,

  713. this morning.

  714. If you believe

  715. in Jesus Christ,

  716. they died on the cross

  717. for sins that you

  718. couldn't pay,

  719. and you've asked him

  720. to forgive your sins

  721. and to be your savior,

  722. you're part of that

  723. body of Christ.

  724. That's something

  725. to rejoice in

  726. this morning.

  727. because you have a life

  728. in Christ,

  729. you have a future

  730. in Christ,

  731. you have a hope

  732. in Christ,

  733. you have a strength

  734. in Christ,

  735. you have a savior

  736. in Christ,

  737. you have freedom

  738. from sin in Christ,

  739. you have a relationship

  740. with God in Christ,

  741. you have an eternity

  742. in Christ.

  743. Praise God

  744. if you are in Christ

  745. this morning.

  746. now if that's not

  747. where you stand

  748. this morning

  749. and you don't believe

  750. in Jesus Christ,

  751. maybe he's just a good

  752. person to you,

  753. then those statements

  754. that I just make

  755. become questions

  756. for you.

  757. Where's your life?

  758. Where's your future?

  759. Where's your hope?

  760. Where's your strength?

  761. What is your savior?

  762. What is your relationship

  763. with God?

  764. And what is your eternity?

  765. You can answer those

  766. with a lot of things,

  767. but if it isn't Christ,

  768. they're going to end.

  769. They're not going to,

  770. they're not going to keep you

  771. through to eternity.

  772. They're going to leave you

  773. at death.

  774. We're still in the same passage.

  775. Chapter 12,

  776. look at verse 13 with me.

  777. For in one spirit

  778. we were all baptized

  779. into one body,

  780. Jews and Greeks,

  781. slaves,

  782. free,

  783. covering everybody here,

  784. and all were made

  785. to drink of one spirit.

  786. That's why we have

  787. believers baptism.

  788. We believe in Christ

  789. and we're baptized

  790. into one body.

  791. One body believers,

  792. one body in Christ.

  793. Christ.

  794. That last part of that verse says,

  795. and all were made

  796. to drink of one spirit.

  797. All right,

  798. now let's jump back

  799. to chapter 10

  800. where we were

  801. and take a look

  802. at verse 4.

  803. We're going to see

  804. some connections here

  805. that I think are helpful

  806. for us.

  807. And all drank

  808. of the same spiritual drink.

  809. For they drank

  810. from the spiritual rock

  811. that followed them.

  812. The rock was Christ.

  813. Christ was the spiritual drink.

  814. Christ was the rock

  815. that followed them

  816. and sustained the Israelites

  817. through the wilderness.

  818. He's also the spiritual drink

  819. and the spiritual rock

  820. that sustains us

  821. as believers.

  822. So Paul's reaching back

  823. to a time

  824. way back.

  825. This is like

  826. 2,400 years

  827. before Christ.

  828. He's reaching back

  829. to the Israelites

  830. and he's letting us know

  831. that Christ

  832. was there

  833. and Christ was their rock.

  834. Now Paul is speaking

  835. and he's a little bit

  836. past the crucifixion

  837. so we'll roughly say

  838. about 2018 years ago.

  839. He's talking to the church

  840. and he's reminding them

  841. of that

  842. and Christ is still

  843. their rock.

  844. And we find ourselves here

  845. over 2,000 years later

  846. and Christ is still

  847. our rock.

  848. That will continue on

  849. until the end of time

  850. when we get to go

  851. to heaven

  852. and be with Christ

  853. our rock.

  854. because Christ

  855. is faithful.

  856. Alright, so

  857. we're done with that passage.

  858. Let's jump back.

  859. We are back to chapter 10.

  860. Let's move down

  861. to verse 18

  862. where we left off.

  863. Consider the people

  864. of Israel

  865. are not those

  866. who ate the sacrifices

  867. participants

  868. in the altar.

  869. See, the altar

  870. in the Old Testament

  871. if you remember

  872. was where the priest

  873. would make sacrifices.

  874. Different sacrifices.

  875. A lot of times

  876. they involved animals

  877. but the priests

  878. were able to take part

  879. in the sacrifices.

  880. They were able to

  881. eat of the food

  882. that was offered.

  883. That was part of

  884. their

  885. benefits

  886. of the job

  887. I guess you could say.

  888. That was part of

  889. their livelihood

  890. that they could do that

  891. but all of it

  892. was a worship

  893. to God.

  894. The sacrifice,

  895. the altar,

  896. the altar,

  897. what they had to do

  898. to clean everything

  899. and get it ready.

  900. Making that blood

  901. sacrifice

  902. to cover the sins

  903. of the people

  904. and then them

  905. being able to eat

  906. that meat later

  907. as part of their

  908. livelihood.

  909. All that was done

  910. in worship to God.

  911. So Paul here

  912. is building up

  913. his previous arguments

  914. about

  915. attending events

  916. in pagan temples,

  917. worshiping idols,

  918. thinking that you

  919. can eat food

  920. offered to

  921. sacrifice to idols

  922. and that be okay.

  923. Verse 19,

  924. Paul says,

  925. what do I imply?

  926. That food offered

  927. to idols is anything

  928. or that an idol

  929. is anything?

  930. If you remember,

  931. Paul earlier said

  932. idols aren't real,

  933. they aren't anything.

  934. Food is food,

  935. enjoy it.

  936. That's how he started out

  937. but as he progresses,

  938. he wants us to know

  939. the warnings,

  940. the dangers

  941. of thinking this way.

  942. verse 20,

  943. he says,

  944. no,

  945. I imply that

  946. what pagans sacrifice,

  947. they offered to demons

  948. and not to God

  949. and I do not want you

  950. to be participants

  951. with demons.

  952. The priest

  953. in the Old Testament

  954. participated

  955. in the sacrifice.

  956. They ate the food

  957. and that was done

  958. as worship,

  959. like I said.

  960. The same applies

  961. to those who go

  962. to the temple

  963. where idols were worshipped

  964. and participate

  965. in those meals.

  966. All that was done

  967. is worship to an idol,

  968. to a god,

  969. little g.

  970. And Paul points out

  971. not only are they idols

  972. but there's demons.

  973. There's demons

  974. that you're worshipping

  975. because if you're not

  976. worshipping God,

  977. you're worshipping Satan

  978. and whoever is

  979. on Satan's side,

  980. there isn't more

  981. than two sides.

  982. It's God

  983. or everything else.

  984. Verse 21,

  985. you cannot drink

  986. the cup of the Lord

  987. and the cup of demons.

  988. You cannot partake

  989. of the table of the Lord

  990. and then turn around

  991. and take the table

  992. of demons.

  993. Shall we provoke

  994. the Lord to jealousy?

  995. Are we stronger

  996. than he?

  997. That reminds me

  998. of,

  999. I don't know,

  1000. I don't know

1001. if you guys did that,

1002. this when you were a kid

  1003. but,

  1004. did you ever have

  1005. a large dog

  1006. chained up

  1007. behind a fence

  1008. and you kind of

  1009. had that temptation

  1010. that you wanted

  1011. to kind of

1012. taunt him a little bit?

  1013. Maybe see,

  1014. just get him angry

  1015. a little bit,

1016. kind of growl at him?

  1017. I didn't do that.

  1018. My brother did.

  1019. But,

  1020. also,

  1021. thinking of

  1022. if you ever went

  1023. to a zoo

  1024. and you saw

  1025. a strong,

  1026. kind of ferocious animal

  1027. and you knew

  1028. he was behind

  1029. a fence,

  1030. behind a glass wall

1031. and he couldn't get you,

1032. you might toy with him,

  1033. make faces at it.

  1034. God's not like that.

  1035. This is something

  1036. that God takes seriously.

  1037. Let me just read

  1038. a couple verses

  1039. from Exodus 20

  1040. as he's given

  1041. the Ten Commandments

  1042. and God spoke

  1043. all these words saying,

1044. I am the Lord your God

  1045. who brought you

1046. out of the land of Egypt,

1047. out of the house of slavery.

  1048. You shall have

  1049. no other gods

  1050. before me.

  1051. Deuteronomy 5, 9,

  1052. speaking of idols.

  1053. You should not

  1054. bow down to them

  1055. or serve them

1056. for I, the Lord your God,

  1057. am a jealous God.

  1058. This is not jealousy

  1059. like our sinful

  1060. human jealousy.

  1061. This is,

  1062. this is a holy,

  1063. righteous jealousy

  1064. based on God

  1065. protecting his name

  1066. and his image

  1067. of being the only

  1068. true God,

  1069. the creator

  1070. of heaven and earth

  1071. and there are

  1072. no other gods,

  1073. little g,

  1074. that are worthy

  1075. of his worship.

  1076. So,

  1077. Paul says,

  1078. don't provoke

  1079. the Lord to jealousy.

  1080. are we stronger

  1081. than he?

  1082. The question,

1083. the answer to that question

  1084. being you're not

  1085. stronger than God.

  1086. Don't go there.

  1087. Some of the Israelites

  1088. did it

  1089. and it ended

  1090. in death.

  1091. Now,

  1092. by now,

  1093. some of you

  1094. might be thinking,

  1095. okay,

  1096. all this stuff

  1097. makes sense,

  1098. this sounds really good,

  1099. but I don't worship idols.

  1100. On top of that,

  1101. I don't remember

  1102. the last time

  1103. I ate any food

  1104. that was offered

  1105. to idols.

  1106. idols.

  1107. It's a good point,

1108. but we need to be serious

  1109. here because we're not

  1110. talking about just idols.

  1111. Idolatry

  1112. is anything

  1113. that we worship

  1114. that's not God.

  1115. So,

  1116. while Paul is talking

  1117. here to the Corinthians

  1118. about idols

  1119. and pagan temples,

  1120. the same applies

  1121. to us,

  1122. it just looks

  1123. a little different.

  1124. Back in verse 6,

  1125. Paul says,

  1126. now these things

  1127. took place

  1128. as examples

  1129. for us

  1130. that we might

  1131. not desire evil.

  1132. And again,

  1133. the NIV

  1134. translates that,

  1135. which I think

  1136. is a little better

  1137. helpful translation.

  1138. Now these things

  1139. occurred as examples

  1140. to keep us

  1141. from setting our hearts

  1142. on evil things.

  1143. As they did.

  1144. What things

  1145. were they?

  1146. They followed

  1147. after other gods.

  1148. What else?

  1149. Sexual immorality,

  1150. testing God,

  1151. grumbling,

  1152. complaining.

  1153. They stopped

  1154. believing in God.

  1155. Even though God

  1156. was in their midst,

  1157. they saw God work.

  1158. They saw God

  1159. perform miracles

  1160. that they were

  1161. a part of,

  1162. and yet they set

  1163. their hearts

  1164. on evil things.

  1165. So the question

  1166. this morning

  1167. is not whether

  1168. or not

  1169. you worship idols.

  1170. The question

  1171. about is

  1172. where your heart is.

  1173. Because that's

  1174. where our worship

  1175. comes from,

  1176. right?

  1177. It comes from

  1178. what's inside our heart.

  1179. It's not just

  1180. the activity

  1181. of bowing

  1182. to something.

  1183. It's just,

  1184. it's not the

  1185. actual physical

  1186. idol.

  1187. It's not the

  1188. actual TV

  1189. that you spend

  1190. time in front of.

  1191. It's not the

  1192. actual magazine

  1193. that you might

  1194. look at

  1195. or the conversations

  1196. you have

  1197. that are not

  1198. Christ glorifying.

  1199. Those physical

  1200. things aren't it.

  1201. It comes from

  1202. a heart

  1203. that's not

  1204. focused on God.

  1205. So what do you

  1206. desire?

  1207. What do you worship?

  1208. Some people say,

  1209. well,

  1210. it's where you

  1211. spend all your time

  1212. that's what you

  1213. worship.

  1214. Maybe.

  1215. Well,

  1216. maybe not.

1217. If you have a job

  1218. outside the house

  1219. and you spend

  1220. on an average

  1221. of 45 to 55

  1222. hours a week

  1223. commuting

  1224. and working

  1225. at a job,

  1226. that's a large

  1227. chunk of your time.

  1228. It's not

  1229. an idol,

  1230. but it could be.

  1231. Your job,

  1232. your status,

  1233. your money,

  1234. that could be

  1235. an idol.

  1236. if God's here

  1237. and your job

  1238. is up here.

  1239. Staying home

  1240. with kids,

  1241. that's a full-time

  1242. job.

  1243. Right?

  1244. That's not an idol.

  1245. Could be.

  1246. I've seen it happen.

  1247. You can make your

  1248. kids an idol.

  1249. You can put God

  1250. down here

  1251. and make your kids

  1252. the most important

  1253. thing in your life.

  1254. The problem is

  1255. is when we get

  1256. them flipped,

  1257. everything else

  1258. is going to let

  1259. us down.

  1260. The God who is

  1261. faithful,

  1262. who is always

  1263. there,

  1264. will not let us

  1265. down and he

  1266. calls us

  1267. to be on him

  1268. and not on

  1269. other things.

  1270. So how about

  1271. other things?

  1272. We have sleeping,

  1273. video games,

  1274. food,

  1275. TV,

  1276. hobbies,

  1277. shopping,

  1278. sports,

  1279. drugs,

  1280. alcohol,

  1281. pornography,

  1282. gambling?

  1283. Now obviously

  1284. some of those

  1285. are pretty obvious.

  1286. That's a pretty

  1287. bad idol.

  1288. But it's possible

  1289. for us to set

  1290. our hearts

  1291. on the idol

  1292. of things

  1293. that are not

  1294. God.

  1295. It can be good

  1296. things that we've

  1297. made God things.

  1298. So we want

  1299. to make sure

  1300. from what Paul

  1301. is telling us

  1302. here,

  1303. from the warnings

  1304. that he's given

  1305. to us,

  1306. that our hearts

  1307. should be placed

  1308. on the altar

  1309. of Jesus Christ,

  1310. our Savior and

  1311. King.

  1312. That's where we

  1313. put our hearts.

  1314. And that brings

  1315. us to our third

  1316. point.

  1317. You're probably

  1318. thinking third.

  1319. It's okay,

  1320. this one's short.

  1321. It's also the most

  1322. important one.

  1323. The last point

  1324. is our future

  1325. success.

  1326. And by now

  1327. you should be able

  1328. to guess that our

  1329. future success

  1330. is Christ.

  1331. Christ,

  1332. the same Christ

  1333. that loved his

  1334. people enough

  1335. to save them

  1336. from slavery

  1337. and bring them

  1338. through the wilderness,

  1339. the same Christ

  1340. who loved us

  1341. enough to die

  1342. in order to save

  1343. us from death.

  1344. Paul is telling

  1345. us that our success

  1346. is Christ,

  1347. it's not idols.

  1348. But you still

  1349. got to watch out

  1350. for them.

  1351. Christ was available

  1352. to the Israelites,

  1353. Christ was their

  1354. rock and yet

  1355. they turned to

  1356. the world instead.

  1357. And God

  1358. left them,

  1359. God cursed

  1360. most of them,

  1361. the older ones,

  1362. 20 and older,

  1363. to remain in the

  1364. desert until they

  1365. died off and their

1366. kids got to go to

  1367. the promised land.

  1368. So we're warned

  1369. not to follow

  1370. after anything

  1371. besides God.

  1372. We're told to

  1373. flee idolatry.

  1374. It's helpful,

  1375. it's a very

  1376. helpful tool.

  1377. It's short,

  1378. it's easy to

  1379. remember,

  1380. you don't need

  1381. a five-step program

  1382. when you run

  1383. into a problem

  1384. if you don't

  1385. know what to do,

  1386. if you're stuck

  1387. in sin and

  1388. you're being

  1389. tempted,

  1390. flee from

  1391. idolatry.

  1392. Flee from

  1393. fill in the

  1394. blank.

  1395. Here it says

  1396. idolatry,

  1397. you can put any

  1398. sin you're

  1399. struggling with

  1400. in that spot.

  1401. The problem is

  1402. when we're

  1403. struggling with

  1404. a sin,

  1405. we say we

  1406. can't overcome

  1407. of it a lot

  1408. of times,

  1409. we kind of

  1410. want to bask

  1411. in that sin

  1412. a little bit

  1413. because we

  1414. don't want

  1415. to give it up.

  1416. We struggle

  1417. with sin

  1418. because we

  1419. like the sin.

  1420. Paul says

  1421. watch out

  1422. because it's

  1423. going to

  1424. overtake you.

  1425. So let's

  1426. keep our

  1427. hearts focused

  1428. on Christ

  1429. because Christ

  1430. is faithful,

  1431. because Christ

  1432. is our rock,

  1433. because Christ

  1434. is our savior.

  1435. Christ is the

  1436. one we follow,

  1437. Christ is the

  1438. one we serve.

  1439. and he's

  1440. faithful to

  1441. protect and

  1442. to keep us.

  1443. Lord, we ask

  1444. your help

  1445. with life

  1446. because life

  1447. is rough.

  1448. There's

  1449. temptations,

  1450. there's sin

  1451. that's all

  1452. around us

  1453. and we're

  1454. in a world

  1455. that looks

  1456. so good

  1457. from so many

  1458. different angles.

  1459. There are

  1460. idols all

  1461. around us

  1462. to pull us

  1463. in.

  1464. Lord, help

  1465. us to keep

  1466. our mind,

  1467. our hearts

  1468. focused on

  1469. you.

  1470. Lord, protect

  1471. us from

  1472. falling into

  1473. temptation

  1474. for your

  1475. glory.

  1476. What I'm

  1477. going to do

  1478. is just

  1479. take a

  1480. minute

  1481. just to

  1482. think about

  1483. the passage.

  1484. There's an

  1485. area that

  1486. the Lord

  1487. has laid

  1488. on your

  1489. heart.

  1490. Don't

  1491. cover it

  1492. up.

  1493. Don't let

  1494. the next

  1495. part of

  1496. the service

  1497. just push

  1498. it around.

  1499. Just let

  1500. that work

  1501. in your

  1502. mind.

  1503. Think

  1504. about how

  1505. you can

  1506. lean on

  1507. Christ,

  1508. your rock

  1509. to get

  1510. you through

  1511. that

  1512. temptation.
