  1. The blessings and the life that you've given us this week.

  2. Lord, we ask your blessing on our time tonight as we look at your word, as we sing, as we remember who you are, how great you are, and how much you love us.

  3. We thank you for that, Lord. Amen.

  4. We sing a song.

  5. Psalm 75.

  6. Psalm 75.

  7. This one's actually a song, which is good.

  8. It's kind of just the thought of being able to spend some time reading over and meditating something that, you know,

  9. the people of Israel sang.

  10. It says in some of the Bible that it was according to do not destroy.

  11. So the thought behind that is that could be like the melody or something that the singers,

  12. the people in charge of worship, knew the song by and the song kind of went by.

  13. So I don't really have a specific time or event that this song was sung.

  14. But nonetheless, it's one that is encouraging and also eye-opening because it deals with the pride of wicked people.

  15. And God talks about dealing with them, which is difficult to sing.

  16. But at the same time, we sing to that and we sing praise to God.

  17. So I'm going to read through the whole thing and then we'll just break it down.

  18. Verse 1.

  19. We give thanks to you, O God.

  20. We give thanks for your name is near.

  21. We recount your wondrous deeds.

  22. At the set time that I appoint, I will judge with equity.

  23. When the earth totters and all its inhabitants, it is I who keeps steady its pillars, Selah.

  24. I say to the boastful, do not boast.

  25. And to the wicked, do not lift up your horn.

  26. Do not lift up your horn on high or speak with haughty neck.

  27. For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up.

  28. But it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.

  29. For in the hand of the Lord, there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it.

  30. And all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.

  31. But I will declare it forever.

  32. I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

  33. All the horns of the wicked I will cut off.

  34. But the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

  35. At times, I'm not sure exactly how you might sing that in a corporate worship setting.

  36. But I'm sure the singing was different back then than it is now.

  37. And nonetheless, it's helpful for us to go through these.

  38. We give thanks to you, O God.

  39. It is not to ourselves that we're looking.

  40. It's not to ourselves that we're giving praise.

  41. But it's to God.

  42. So it's repeated there.

  43. We give thanks for your name is near.

  44. And we recount your wondrous deeds.

  45. This is something that repeats a lot in the Psalms.

  46. Is David or other authors of the Psalms just rehearsing what God has done.

  47. And this is really something that's helpful.

  48. Just remembering what God does and how he blesses us.

  49. Especially at times where we're struggling.

  50. Especially, you know, times where we feel like things aren't going well.

  51. Or there's more bad than good.

  52. It's helpful to go over all the things that God has done for us.

  53. So this is what the Israelites are doing.

  54. And we recount your wondrous deeds.

  55. How he rescued them from slavery.

  56. How he brought them up from the Red Sea.

  57. How he fed them through the wilderness.

  58. And he brought them into the land that he promised them.

  59. Even now, during this time, he's raising up kings for them.

  60. And he's giving them prosperity.

  61. And he's making them victorious over the enemies that are coming up against them.

  62. And so they're recounting this.

  63. They're giving God praise for these things.

  64. Just praising him for his protection.

  65. For his providence and his grace.

  66. So just things that are helpful to us.

  67. Again, just to remind ourselves of the wondrous deeds that God has done for us.

  68. And his ongoing grace for us are proofs that he is ever with us.

  69. So that's the thought of when it says that your name is near.

  70. Jesus is with us.

  71. Is what that means.

  72. Matthew 28, verse 20.

    Matthew 28:20

  73. Jesus says,

  74. And behold, I am with you always.

  75. Even to the end of the age.

  76. So after he gives the command to go and make disciples.

  77. He's also quick to give that reassurance that I'm going to be with you.

  78. As we look at the next few verses.

  79. Verse 1 was the people singing this or reading this.

  80. And verses 2 to 5, this is actually from God's perspective.

  81. So this is God speaking as he says,

  82. At the set time that I appoint, I will judge with equity or uprightnessness.

  83. Here God is saying that not only is he the upright judge,

  84. but he chooses the proper time for his judgment.

  85. While his timing, as we all know, might not be what we choose,

  86. we have to humbly trust him knowing that his timing and his judgments are right.

  87. Dr. James Boyce says,

  88. If judgment were left in our hands,

  89. we would probably let it flash out against anything that displeases us whenever we see it.

  90. But God lets evil go unchecked sometimes for a rather long time,

  91. knowing that he has appointed a proper time when it will be brought down.

  92. God will seize the moment.

  93. It will be in his time.

  94. And it will never be late.

  95. Verse 3 says,

  96. When the earth totters and all its inhabitants,

  97. in some translations it says dissolved or quaked,

  98. when the earth quakes and all of its inhabitants,

  99. it is I, God speaking, who keeps steady its pillars.

  100. Silah.

  101. So the idea behind the silah is just a brief pause for meditation,

  102. just to think about what's just been said.

  103. When everything is becoming unloosed,

  104. it is God who steadies the pillars.

  105. When governments fall and nations war against each other,

  106. which we see natural disasters,

  107. which we see sicknesses,

  108. death,

  109. which we see,

  110. we know that God is rock solid

  111. and he's the one that holds all things together.

  112. The pillars stand because they must,

  113. because God is the one that upholds them.

  114. So while these things that happen that cause us to shake

  115. and the things around us to shake,

  116. they're difficult,

  117. but we can take comfort in the fact that

  118. that God is the one that's holding all this together.

  119. I was also reminded of just thinking of

  120. God keeping the pillars steady.

  121. There'll be a time where

  122. the pillars kind of keeping the earth where it is

  123. will be taken away,

  124. right?

  125. As God's judgment comes towards an end

  126. and the old earth passes away,

  127. the earth as we know it won't be anymore,

  128. but during that time,

  129. God is still going to rescue his own people,

  130. his church.

  131. He's going to pull them up,

  132. keep them safe

  133. as he gets the earth ready for

  134. the new heaven

  135. and the new earth

  136. and then puts us into that.

  137. Move down to verses four and five.

  138. I say to the boastful,

  139. do not boast,

  140. and to the wicked,

  141. do not lift up your horn.

  142. Do not lift up your horn on high

  143. or speak with haughty neck.

  144. The horn here

  145. symbolizes strength

  146. or power.

  147. So if you think of an animal

  148. with a horn

  149. or horns rather,

  150. like a large mountain goat,

  151. the horns are a symbol

  152. for that goat of strength.

  153. It's his protection.

  154. So that's what is meant

  155. when he's talking about the horn.

  156. So do not lift up your horn

  157. or speak with a haughty neck.

  158. The haughty neck being

  159. someone who's boastful and proud

  160. where they're sticking their head up

  161. and they're very proud of themselves.

  162. James 4, 6 says,

  163. God opposes the proud

  164. but gives grace to the humble.

  165. We all know

  166. that God is,

  167. hates those who are proud.

  168. The reason for that

  169. is because pride

  170. is us not giving praise to God

  171. but rather praise to ourselves

  172. from something that we did

  173. when really it's something

  174. that God gave us.

  175. So it's putting yourself

  176. in the place of God

  177. which is one of the reasons

  178. why he hates it

  179. and feels the way he does about it.

  180. If we look at verse 6 and 7,

  181. for not from the east

  182. or from the west

  183. and not from the wilderness

  184. comes lifting up

  185. but it is God

  186. who executes judgments

  187. putting down one

  188. and lifting up another.

  189. Which is why

  190. we're called not the boast

  191. because the judgment

  192. and the lifting up

  193. and the putting down

  194. is something that comes from God.

  195. Things don't happen by chance

  196. because God is in control

  197. of those things.

  198. The putting down of one,

  199. the lifting up of another,

  200. it doesn't come from

  201. the rising or setting of the sun

  202. which is the thought here

  203. behind the east or the west

  204. as the sun comes up

  205. and as the sun goes down

  206. from the wilderness

  207. that is not where

  208. it comes from

  209. but it comes from God

  210. and Him executing

  211. His desire,

  212. His judgment

  213. on what He wants to do.

  214. Next we see in verse 8

  215. we see a warning

  216. and a judgment

  217. coming to the wicked.

  218. For in the hand of the Lord

  219. there is a cup

  220. of foaming wine

  221. in some translations

  222. they say

  223. wine that is red

  224. is well mixed

  225. and He pours out from it

  226. and all the wicked

  227. of the earth

  228. shall drain it down

  229. to the dregs.

  230. Here's the more difficult

  231. part of this psalm

  232. just because

  233. as we start to picture

  234. the wrath of God

  235. that He will be pouring out

  236. to those

  237. who remain wicked

  238. and do not accept

  239. Him

  240. do not accept

  241. the love

  242. that He's given us

  243. through Jesus Christ.

  244. For in the hand

  245. of the Lord

  246. there is a cup

  247. we can see from that

  248. like the punishment

  249. is already prepared

  250. it's not something

  251. that God is doing later

  252. but He's holding a cup

  253. so we get this picture

  254. that

  255. that punishment

  256. is there

  257. and ready

  258. for when He decides

  259. to

  260. execute it

  261. and it's for all

  262. those who do not

  263. follow God

  264. those who have laughed

  265. and rejected

  266. His Son

  267. His gift of love

  268. to them

  269. and because of that

  270. they will be forced

  271. to drink

  272. the wine of wrath

  273. at His table

  274. of justice.

  275. Revelation 14.10

  276. says

  277. the same

  278. shall drink wine

  279. shall drink

  280. the wine

  281. of the wrath

  282. of God.

  283. So the red wine

  284. the

  285. foaming

  286. of the wine

  287. is supposed to be

  288. a representation

  289. of the wrath

  290. of God.

  291. Well mixed

  292. speaking of different

  293. things that are

  294. in the wine

  295. like His righteous

  296. anger

  297. and His justice

  298. these are all things

  299. that are not

  300. earthly

  301. or human

  302. anger

  303. and vengeance

  304. but it's a holy

  305. vengeance

  306. it's a righteous

  307. anger.

  308. and this is

  309. the

  310. what the wicked

  311. will be forced

  312. to drink

  313. in the end.

  314. So the imagery

  315. is really strong

  316. which was encouraging

  317. at times

  318. to the Israelites

  319. because

  320. of

  321. the enemies

  322. that were coming

  323. against them.

  324. They were looking

  325. for some type

  326. of justice

  327. when there wasn't

  328. any justice.

  329. So it's

  330. verses like this

  331. not that they were

  332. glad that this was

  333. happening to the enemies

  334. but they were able

  335. to take solace

  336. in the fact that

  337. God does give judgment.

  338. God does see

  339. what's happening

  340. to His children

  341. and it's not

  342. that He doesn't care

  343. He just has a timing

  344. that's different

  345. than what we think.

  346. So this judgment

  347. here is

  348. is a really

  349. a horrific ending

  350. for the wicked.

  351. But luckily

  352. and rejoicingly

  353. this song

  354. this psalm

  355. doesn't end here.

  356. we'll move on

  357. to verses 9 and 10

  358. but I will declare

  359. it forever

  360. I will sing praises

  361. to the God of Jacob

  362. all the horns

  363. of the wicked

  364. I will cut off

  365. but the horns

  366. of the righteous

  367. shall be lifted up.

  368. So here we have

  369. the people of Israel

  370. coming back

  371. and finishing

  372. their song.

  373. They're rehearsing

  374. their singing

  375. of Jehovah's praises.

  376. Charles Spurgeon

  377. writes

  378. the covenant God

  379. who delivered Jacob

  380. from a thousand

  381. afflictions

  382. our soul

  383. shall magnify.

  384. He has kept

  385. his covenant

  386. which he made

  387. with patriarch

  388. and has redeemed

  389. his seed

  390. therefore we will

  391. spread abroad

  392. his fame

  393. world without end.

  394. The idea

  395. being that God

  396. is in control

  397. and the blessings

  398. that we've been given

  399. we don't make

  400. ourselves proud

  401. or boastful.

  402. He says

  403. all the horns

  404. of the wicked

  405. I will cut off.

  406. God abhords

  407. the proud

  408. but he lifts up

  409. the humble.

  410. So if God

  411. hates the proud

  412. that much

  413. because of

  414. what they stand

  415. for

  416. then his church

  417. should also

  418. make sure

  419. that we fight

  420. against

  421. pride in ourselves

  422. and pride in what we do

  423. pride in our church.

  424. So just

  425. in summary

  426. as we look

  427. through the

  428. different

  429. the highlights

  430. of just

  431. those ten verses

  432. is

  433. that we give

  434. thanks

  435. and we should

  436. always be given

  437. thanks.

  438. Notice he repeats

  439. that so

  440. when we're not

  441. giving thanks

  442. give thanks

  443. again.

  444. When it's hard

  445. give thanks.

  446. It's our way

  447. of reminding

  448. ourselves

  449. of what the

  450. things God

  451. has done

  452. for us

  453. it also

  454. gets our

  455. mind off

  456. of our

  457. troubles

  458. here

  459. and onto

  460. more of

  461. God's view

  462. of things

  463. as we remember

  464. what he's done

  465. and who he is

  466. because as he

  467. says

  468. in verse

  469. two

  470. I will

  471. judge

  472. with

  473. equity

  474. and he

  475. keeps the

  476. pillars

  477. steady

  478. God is

  479. the one

  480. that's in

  481. control

  482. and then

  483. further on

  484. to protect

  485. ourselves

  486. against

  487. pride

  488. so we need

  489. to watch

  490. our heart

  491. we need

  492. to watch

  493. our appearance

  494. and also

  495. our speech

  496. and how we

  497. talk

  498. so areas

  499. of pride

  500. because the

  501. wicked will

  502. be judged

  503. and we

  504. don't want

  505. to

  506. not only

  507. do we

  508. want to

  509. share

  510. the gospel

  511. with a

  512. lost

  513. world

  514. but we

  515. don't want

  516. how we

  517. talk

  518. or how

  519. we look

  520. to keep

  521. them from

  522. seeing that

  523. gospel in any

  524. way

  525. we don't want

  526. to be a

  527. stumbling block

  528. just in the

  529. way that we

  530. live

  531. because they

  532. will be

  533. judged

  534. and we

  535. don't say

  536. that out

  537. of

  538. us getting

  539. vengeance

  540. we say

  541. that out

  542. of

  543. really out

  544. of horror

  545. of the

  546. just the

  547. the

  548. the

  549. death

  550. of

  551. what

  552. hell

  553. is

  554. the

  555. depth

  556. of

  557. what

  558. that

  559. wrath

  560. is

  561. going

  562. to

  563. look

  564. like

  565. on

  566. those

  567. who

  568. don't

  569. believe

  570. God

  571. is

  572. just a

  573. scary

  574. thing

  575. so we

  576. keep that

  577. in view

  578. to help

  579. us

  580. in our

  581. sharing

  582. that with

  583. the world

  584. and then

  585. he ends

  586. with

  587. declaring

  588. the

  589. majesty

  590. of

  591. God

  592. so we

  593. sing

  594. his

  595. praises

  596. not

  597. knowing

  598. why

  599. God

  600. lifts up

  601. and tears

  602. down

  603. why

  604. God

  605. takes

  606. a life

  607. before we

  608. think

  609. it's

  610. time

  611. we

  612. still

  613. sing

  614. his

  615. praises

  616. his

  617. goodness
