  1. Good morning. My name is Sean. If you're a guest here with us, I'm one of the pastors of Trinity

  2. Cambridge Church, and I have the privilege of bringing God's Word to you on most Sundays.

  3. And today, as Ruth read from, we're in Jeremiah 2, 1 to 4, 4, but because it's a long passage,

  4. I didn't read, we didn't read the whole thing. But that means as I'm preaching, because I'm

  5. preaching from the whole passage, I will be reading extended portions of it from God's Word.

  6. And so I really encourage you to open your Bibles if you haven't already. Don't rely,

  7. because I'm not going to be putting the main passage of Scripture on the screen. And I know

  8. some of you guys might find that a little bit frustrating. Like, why doesn't he just preach?

  9. Why does he have to keep going back to the Bible and read all this? Just tell us what it says. But

  10. that it's a strong conviction of mine that it's God's Word that is efficacious unto our salvation,

  11. not my words. And my words are just unpacking God's Word so that the effect of God's Word bears on us.

  12. And that's why in 1 Timothy, in Paul's letter to Timothy, Paul says,

  13. devote yourselves to the public reading of Scripture and to exhortation and to teaching.

  14. Not just to exhortation and teaching, to the reading of Scripture, because it's God's Word that is

  15. effective in changing our lives. So please be patient with me. I'll refer you back to Scripture

  16. and go with me and read with me as I go. You've all heard the phrase, oh, it's nothing personal.

  17. And ironically, sometimes people say that to you before they hurl their most personal criticisms at you.

  18. As if merely saying it's not personal now gives them the license to vent all of their frustrations and anger.

  19. And sometimes we think of our offenses against God, our sins, in the same exact way. We think of sin in

  20. this abstract, impersonal terms. And we say, oh, it's nothing personal, God. I love you and I think

  21. you're great, but I really can't resist this. I really need this right now. And we sin.

  22. But today's passage talks about sin in concrete and intensely personal terms. Sin is not an

  23. abstract. It's always personal. It's an offense against. To sin is to choose something or someone

  24. instead of God and to take concrete steps away from God. And for that reason, all who sin must truly,

  25. genuinely, wholeheartedly return to God. That's the main point of this passage. That those who have turned

  26. away from the Lord must return to Him wholeheartedly. And we'll see that in two parts. First, we'll talk

  27. about how Israel turned away in chapter 2. And then we'll talk about how Israel should return to Him

  28. in chapters 3 and the beginning in 4. In chapter 1, we saw the word of the Lord come to Jeremiah to call

  29. him and consecrate him and then commission him as a prophet to the nations. And then here in chapter 2,

  30. we begin to see Jeremiah's obedience to God's commission. So read verses 1 to 3 with me.

  31. The word of the Lord came to me saying,

  32. Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem,

  33. Thus says the Lord,

  34. I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride,

  35. how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.

  36. Israel was holy to the Lord,

  37. the first fruits of His harvest.

  38. All who ate of it incurred guilt.

  39. But disaster came upon them,

  40. declares the Lord.

  41. In their youth, this is a picture of Israel.

  42. Israel was devoted to God.

  43. The word devoted is the same word that is used to describe God's covenant love toward His people,

  44. His steadfast love, His loving kindness.

  45. As they should be, Israel was once loyal to God and faithful to God.

  46. They once loved Him like a bride who loves her husband and follows him anywhere he's willing to go.

  47. Like a bride, Israel followed God out of Egypt into the wilderness to a land not sown,

  48. to a land that is not until before.

  49. This is a beautiful image of a bride giving herself complete to her husband

  50. and leaving her household to start a new place, in a new place, a new life together.

  51. That's what Israel was like to God, a bride for Him.

  52. And yet, and they were holy to the Lord, it says,

  53. consecrated to belong exclusively to Him.

  54. And they were the first fruits of His harvest.

  55. First fruits was a stipulation in the Old Testament

  56. where all the first fruits of your produce and livestock

  57. were supposed to be given to the Lord as an offering of thanksgiving.

  58. And so by recognizing giving a portion, the first fruits of your produce to God,

  59. you recognize that all that you have ultimately came from God.

  60. And so that first fruit was considered sacred, devoted to the Lord,

  61. His special portion, symbolizing that everything belongs to Him.

  62. And Israel was that first fruit for God,

  63. meaning that there would be in the future, the rest of the fruits would come,

  64. all the nations, people would come from all nations to be saved by Him.

  65. But Israel was the first fruits, and because of His special possession,

  66. all who tampered with the first fruits that belonged to God,

  67. all who messed with Israel,

  68. incurred guilt and invited the wrath of God.

  69. That's the picture of intimacy and trust we find here.

  70. But that is a thing of the past.

  71. The present state of things is quite different.

  72. Read verses 4 to 7 with me.

  73. Follow with me as I read.

  74. Hear the word of the Lord.

  75. O house of Jacob and all the clans of the house of Israel,

  76. Thus says the Lord,

  77. What wrong did your fathers find in me,

  78. that they went far from me,

  79. and went after worthlessness,

  80. and became worthless?

  81. They did not say,

  82. Where is the Lord,

  83. who brought us up from the land of Egypt,

  84. who led us in the wilderness,

  85. in a land of deserts and pits,

  86. in a land of drought and deep darkness,

  87. in a land that none passes deep,

  88. where none dwells.

  89. And I brought you into a plentiful land

  90. to enjoy its fruits and its good things.

  91. But when you came in,

  92. you defiled my land

  93. and made my heritage an abomination.

  94. At this point of Jeremiah's ministry,

  95. the northern kingdom of Israel

  96. has already been conquered by Assyria,

  97. but some of them would have taken refuge

  98. in the southern kingdom of Judah,

  99. and that's where Jeremiah is based

  100. and is ministering.

  101. And so Jeremiah's here,

  102. he's addressing all the clans

  103. of the house of Israel,

  104. and asked them a rhetorical question,

  105. What wrong did your fathers find in me,

  106. that they went far from me?

  107. This is God speaking.

  108. Of course, the answer is nothing.

  109. There was no wrong in God.

  110. God was always faithful to them.

  111. No one has found fault with God,

  112. because God has been faultless with them,

  113. yet still they found fault.

  114. Yet still they went far from him.

  115. And because they went after worthlessness,

  116. they themselves became worthless.

  117. The spelling and pronunciation in Hebrew

  118. of the word worthless

  119. is very much the same as the word Baal,

  120. who is the main pagan god,

  121. the Canaanite deity.

  122. And so every time in these passages

  123. and throughout Jeremiah,

  124. you hear phrases and words like worthless

  125. or unprofitable, good for nothing, useless,

  126. those are all kind of references to Baal.

  127. Saying that you abandoned me,

  128. the true God who saved you,

  129. and you went after worthless things,

  130. and in worshiping worthless things,

  131. you became worthless yourself.

  132. And then look in verse 8 with me.

  133. All Israel forsook the Lord, it says.

  134. And not just the people,

  135. all the leaders of Israel.

  136. It says in verse 8,

  137. The priests did not say,

  138. Where is the Lord?

  139. They didn't search for him.

  140. Those who handled the law did not know me.

  141. The shepherds transgressed against me.

  142. The prophets prophesied by Baal

  143. and went after things that do not profit.

  144. Again, Baal, right?

  145. The priests who are responsible for seeking the Lord

  146. did not ask, Where is the Lord?

  147. The scribes and Levites who are responsible

  148. for teaching about God themselves

  149. did not know God.

  150. And the shepherds are metaphors for kings

  151. and rulers of Israel.

  152. And these rulers, these shepherds,

  153. did not lead people in God's way,

  154. but they themselves transgressed the ways of God,

  155. went across the boundaries

  156. that were forbidden to them.

  157. And finally, even the prophets

  158. who are supposed to speak by the Lord

  159. and reveal His will,

  160. prophesied by Baal instead.

  161. For this reason,

  162. God must bring His charge against them.

  163. And this is what He says in verse 9 to 13.

  164. He contends with them.

  165. Therefore, I still contend with you,

  166. declares the Lord,

  167. and with your children's children

  168. I will contend.

  169. For cross to the coast of Cyprus and sea,

  170. or send to Kedar and examine with care.

  171. See if there has been such a thing.

  172. Has a nation changed its gods,

  173. even though they are no gods?

  174. But my people have changed their glory

  175. for that which does not profit.

  176. Be appalled, O heavens, at this.

  177. Be shocked.

  178. Be utterly desolate, declares the Lord.

  179. For my people have committed two evils.

  180. They have forsaken me,

  181. the fountain of living waters,

  182. and hewed out cisterns for themselves,

  183. broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  184. The main thrust of God's contention is this.

  185. Israel, what Israel has done,

  186. is so wicked,

  187. so treacherous,

  188. that it has not been done

  189. in the history of any nation around them.

  190. Nations in the ancient Near East

  191. were polytheistic,

  192. so they might add deities

  193. to their pantheon of deities.

  194. They might reorder their deities

  195. in their prominence,

  196. but they never changed their gods.

  197. They never abandoned the gods

  198. that their ancestors worshipped completely.

  199. Yet Israel

  200. have abandoned the one true God.

  201. They have changed their God

  202. and worshipped idols.

  203. And then God specifies their offense

  204. to two parts in verse 13.

  205. My people have committed two evils.

  206. They have forsaken me,

  207. the fountain of living waters,

  208. and hewed out cisterns for themselves,

  209. broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  210. Many people in this geographic area

  211. where Jeremiah is writing from

  212. did not have access to living waters.

  213. So living water is referenced

  214. to a live water source.

  215. It could be a river

  216. or it could be a spring

  217. that spews forth water.

  218. And because most people

  219. didn't have access to such living water,

  220. they had to resort to rainwater.

  221. And the way they saved rainwater

  222. is by digging a cistern

  223. into these rocky lime hills.

  224. They would dig a cistern out,

  225. hew it out,

  226. and then they would plaster the walls

  227. with lime plaster

  228. to make sure that the water

  229. doesn't leak.

  230. And then they would use irrigation

  231. to direct the water,

  232. the rainwater,

  233. into the cistern

  234. and store it for further use.

  235. But such cisterns

  236. frequently developed leaks

  237. and cracks,

  238. and it drained

  239. the very life source

  240. of their people

  241. who were depending on them.

  242. So this is an image

  243. that's very familiar

  244. to God's people.

  245. And God says to them,

  246. I am the fountain

  247. of living waters.

  248. Yet you have abandoned me

  249. to hew out broken cisterns

  250. that can hold no water.

  251. Let that image

  252. just be etched indelibly

  253. on your minds.

  254. God is the fountain

  255. of living waters.

  256. The God is the eternal life.

  257. And only He can satisfy you.

  258. We were created

  259. for eternity

  260. to glorify God

  261. and to enjoy Him forever.

  262. And nothing less than that

  263. can ever satisfy us.

  264. whatever else

  265. you might turn to

  266. for joy,

  267. for purpose,

  268. for fulfillment,

  269. whether it's other gods

  270. or success,

  271. job,

  272. wealth,

  273. charitable work,

  274. beauty,

  275. fitness,

  276. or power,

  277. whatever it might be.

  278. It doesn't matter

  279. how good these things are

  280. in and of themselves.

  281. If you turn to them

  282. for your ultimate fulfillment,

  283. if you turn to them

  284. as your ultimate goal in life,

  285. they will turn out

  286. to be broken cisterns

  287. that can hold no water.

  288. It might seem like

  289. it's working for you

  290. for a little while,

  291. but it's just a matter of time

  292. and you'll discover

  293. a crack here,

  294. a leak there,

  295. and find that

  296. your cistern is empty

  297. and that your life

  298. is running dry.

  299. The same has happened

  300. to Israel at this point

  301. and we see the consequences

  302. of their idolatry

  303. in verses 14 to 19.

  304. Follow with me

  305. as I read.

  306. Is Israel a slave?

  307. Is he a home-born servant?

  308. Why then has he become a prey?

  309. The lions have roared against him.

  310. They have roared loudly.

  311. They have his land a waste.

  312. His cities are in ruins

  313. without inhabitant.

  314. Moreover,

  315. the men of Memphis

  316. and Tapanis

  317. have shaved the crown

  318. of your head.

  319. Have you not

  320. brought upon yourself

  321. by forsaking the Lord your God

  322. when he led you in the way?

  323. And now,

  324. what do you gain

  325. by going to Egypt

  326. to drink the waters of the Nile?

  327. Or what do you gain

  328. by going to Assyria

  329. to drink the waters

  330. of the Euphrates?

  331. Your evil will chastise you

  332. and your apostasy

  333. will reprove you.

  334. Know and see

  335. that it is evil

  336. and bitter for you

  337. to forsake the Lord your God.

  338. The fear of me

  339. is not in you,

  340. declares the Lord God of hosts.

  341. God has bestowed

  342. great honor in Israel

  343. by calling them

  344. in Exodus 4.22

  345. the firstborn son.

  346. And he rescued them

  347. out of their slavery in Egypt.

  348. But by turning to

  349. these idolatrous pagan nations,

  350. to the broken cisterns

  351. that can hold no water,

  352. instead of turning to God

  353. the fountain of living waters,

  354. these people

  355. have enslaved themselves

  356. all over again.

  357. And so God asks them,

  358. is Israel indeed a son?

  359. Is Israel indeed free?

  360. Why then are they wasted

  361. and enslaved to other nations?

  362. Even the Nile of the Egyptians,

  363. the famed Euphrates

  364. of the Assyrians,

  365. are just broken cisterns

  366. that can hold no water.

  367. So don't turn to them,

  368. turn to me.

  369. And then using a series

  370. of hard-hitting images,

  371. and this is how personally

  372. God takes this,

  373. God describes the apostasy

  374. in verses 20 to 25.

  375. First, he describes it

  376. in verse 20 this way,

  377. For long ago I broke your yoke

  378. and burst your bonds,

  379. but you said,

  380. I will not serve.

  381. God freed them

  382. from their slavery,

  383. but still they said,

  384. No, we will not serve the Lord.

  385. We will serve these idols instead.

  386. And then this analogy

  387. is used of prostitution.

  388. Yes, on every high hill

  389. and under every green tree,

  390. you bow down like a whore.

  391. Baal, the Canaanite idol,

  392. was considered a god

  393. of rain and fertility.

  394. And so because of that,

  395. those who worshipped Baal

  396. performed sexual rituals

  397. at local shrines

  398. that were located

  399. on the high hills.

  400. And even though

  401. they had been freed

  402. by the sovereign Lord,

  403. these Israelites

  404. sprawled themselves out

  405. under leafy trees

  406. like a common harlot.

  407. Then the second analogy

  408. is in verses 21 to 22.

  409. God says,

  410. He planted them

  411. as a choice vine,

  412. holy of pure seed,

  413. to bear grapes

  414. of the highest quality,

  415. sweet grapes

  416. that can yield premium wine.

  417. Yet,

  418. they became like a wild vine

  419. that yields bitter fruit.

  420. And they stain themselves

  421. with scents

  422. that not even soap

  423. can wash them clean.

  424. And then in verse 23,

  425. God compares Israel

  426. to a restless she-camel.

  427. He says,

  428. How can you say

  429. I am not unclean?

  430. I have not gone

  431. after the Baals.

  432. Look at your way

  433. in the valley.

  434. Know what you have done.

  435. A restless young camel

  436. running here and there.

  437. The word Baal here

  438. is important

  439. because even though

  440. Baal is one Canaanite God,

  441. there were many centers

  442. of Baal worship.

  443. It's almost as if

  444. there are many Baals.

  445. And Israelites,

  446. as if worshipping Baal

  447. wasn't enough

  448. in one place,

  449. they worshipped him

  450. at every high hill,

  451. under every green tree.

  452. And in their idolatry,

  453. they were like a restless

  454. young camel running

  455. here and there.

  456. It's a well-known fact

  457. among cultures

  458. that use camels

  459. that a young female camel

  460. is very skittish and jumpy.

  461. And so they are considered

  462. very unreliable for riding.

  463. They kind of run around,

  464. jig-jag like this,

  465. like,

  466. and very fickle.

  467. And so God's comparing Israel

  468. to this she-camel

  469. that goes from one camel

  470. to another.

  471. And according to verse 24,

  472. Israel was also like

  473. a wild donkey

  474. used to the wilderness,

  475. in her heat,

  476. sniffing the wind,

  477. who can restrain lust.

  478. A wild female donkey,

  479. when in heat,

  480. almost becomes violent.

  481. Sniff the wind,

  482. trying to pick up

  483. the scent of the male donkey

  484. from their urine.

  485. When she does catch the scent,

  486. she races down the wilderness

  487. in trying to find

  488. this male donkey.

  489. And so because of that,

  490. God says,

  491. none who seek her

  492. need weary themselves.

  493. In her month,

  494. they will find her.

  495. There was no need

  496. for the adherents of Baal

  497. to plant alatize

  498. because Israel

  499. was so eager

  500. to chase after Baals

  501. like a wild donkey

  502. whose lusts

  503. cannot be restrained.

  504. And that God commands

  505. Israel in verse 25,

  506. keep your feet

  507. from going unshod

  508. and your throat

  509. from thirst.

  510. Don't let your sandals

  511. wear out

  512. and your throats

  513. parched

  514. from going after

  515. these idols.

  516. Return to me.

  517. But Israel responds,

  518. it is hopeless,

  519. for I have loved

  520. foreigners,

  521. and after them

  522. I will go.

  523. Given Israel's

  524. stubborn refusal

  525. to repent

  526. of their idolatry,

  527. God denounces

  528. and derides,

  529. really mocks

  530. the futility

  531. of their idols

  532. in verses 26 to 28.

  533. Read with me,

  534. verses 26 to 28,

  535. chapter 2.

  536. As a thief

  537. is shamed

  538. when caught,

  539. so the house

  540. of Israel

  541. shall be shamed.

  542. They,

  543. their kings,

  544. their officials,

  545. their priests,

  546. and their prophets

  547. who say to a tree,

  548. you are my father

  549. and to a stone

  550. you gave me birth,

  551. for they have

  552. turned back to me

  553. and looked at their face.

  554. But in the time

  555. of their trouble,

  556. they say,

  557. arise and save us.

  558. But where are your gods

  559. that you made for yourself?

  560. Let them arise

  561. if they can save you

  562. in your time of trouble.

  563. For where are your gods,

  564. O Judah?

  565. Is this something

  566. bothering you guys?

  567. Should I just grab a mic,

  568. hand out a mic?

  569. I'll just keep going.

  570. So this is really ironic

  571. because in Canaanite worship,

  572. idolatry,

  573. on the high hills,

  574. they would usually have

  575. two symbols.

  576. One would be a tree

  577. that is supposed

  578. to represent

  579. a male deity

  580. or a female deity.

  581. It would be a stone

  582. representing a male deity.

  583. And so they're turning,

  584. so it's ironic

  585. that people made

  586. in God's image

  587. are turning to these creatures

  588. and saying,

  589. oh,

  590. this tree,

  591. you are my father.

  592. And then to a stone

  593. who gave me birth.

  594. And there's bitter irony here.

  595. Jeremiah is using satire

  596. because notice that

  597. even though the tree

  598. is supposed to represent

  599. the female deity,

  600. they turn to a tree

  601. and say,

  602. you are my father.

  603. Even the stone

  604. is supposed to represent

  605. the female deity,

  606. they turn to the stone

  607. and say,

  608. you gave me birth.

  609. So God's painting

  610. this picture

  611. of Israelites' idolatry

  612. and pointing out

  613. the absurdity of it.

  614. They are devoted

  615. to these idols

  616. and as devoted

  617. they have been,

  618. they're still utterly confused.

  619. They have no idea

  620. what they're doing.

  621. They're turning to sticks

  622. and stones,

  623. literally,

  624. and saying,

  625. you are my father,

  626. you are my mother.

  627. And then even then,

  628. they say in verse 27,

  629. when times of trouble come,

  630. they say to God,

  631. arise and save us.

  632. Like an adulterous wife

  633. who returns to her husband

  634. only when she runs out of money.

  635. Or like a rebel,

  636. a son who calls his father

  637. only when he is in trouble

  638. with the law

  639. and needs to be bailed out of jail.

  640. When they are in trouble,

  641. Israel still cries out to God,

  642. arise and save us.

  643. But God will not be mocked

  644. by such hypocrisy.

  645. And he says in verse 28,

  646. but where are your gods

  647. that you made for yourself?

  648. Let them arise

  649. if they can save you

  650. in your time of trouble.

  651. For as many as your cities

  652. are your gods,

  653. O Judah.

  654. There are as many idols in Judah

  655. as there are cities.

  656. Why don't you ask one of them

  657. to save you?

  658. Statement is dripping with irony.

  659. Can the gods you have made

  660. with your own hands

  661. really save you?

  662. It's easy for us

  663. to dismiss these kinds

  664. of idolatry

  665. as something of the past,

  666. as superstitions of people,

  667. of gullible people

  668. in the ancient world.

  669. And idolatry

  670. have not diminished

  671. over the years.

  672. We may not worship

  673. sticks and stones,

  674. but we too worship

  675. the work of our own hands.

  676. And instead of

  677. worshiping the God

  678. who created us,

  679. we may not worship

  680. the work of our own hands.

  681. Hopefully that's better.

  682. Let's not let ourselves

  683. off the hook

  684. as we look at the idolatry

  685. of these Israelites

  686. because he's saying

  687. that as much as they

  688. have worshipped

  689. the works of their own hands,

  690. we too worship

  691. the work of our own hands

  692. because instead of

  693. worshipping the God

  694. who created us

  695. in his image,

  696. we often worship

  697. a God whom we have

  698. fashioned in our own image.

  699. We reduce God

  700. to amulets,

  701. pendants,

  702. and talismans

  703. as if we can put God

  704. in our pockets

  705. and carry him around

  706. with us

  707. and use him

  708. when we want.

  709. We reduce God

  710. to rituals,

  711. formulas,

  712. and legal requirements

  713. as if we can

  714. manipulate God

  715. by performing

  716. the right rituals,

  717. saying the right things,

  718. pressing the right buttons.

  719. Instead of doing

  720. the things

  721. that God

  722. purposed

  723. and God

  724. prioritizes,

  725. we ask

  726. God

  727. to align himself

  728. to our purposes

  729. and priorities.

  730. Instead of letting

  731. God's word

  732. challenge us

  733. and change

  734. our perspectives,

  735. we do elaborate

  736. interpretive acrobatics

  737. and water down

  738. God's word

  739. to avoid

  740. the clear teaching

  741. of scripture

  742. and make it

  743. suit our whims

  744. and wishes.

  745. We pay lip service

  746. to God

  747. but give our hearts

  748. to the idols

  749. of this world

  750. to fame

  751. and acclaim

  752. to beauty

  753. to wealth

  754. to comfort

  755. to power.

  756. God

  757. It's no different

  758. from worshiping

  759. sticks and stones.

  760. It's no wonder

  761. that such

  762. a domesticated

  763. God

  764. can't do us

  765. any good.

  766. And after we do this,

  767. we are surprised

  768. that our spiritual

  769. lives lack

  770. vitality.

  771. And after living

  772. as we have

  773. no need

  774. for God,

  775. when crises come,

  776. we turn to God

  777. for help

  778. and God asks

  779. us,

  780. where are your

  781. gods?

  782. that you

  783. have made

  784. for yourself.

  785. Let them arise

  786. if they can save you.

  787. And then

  788. in verses

  789. 29 to 37,

  790. God continues

  791. his charge

  792. and expresses

  793. his grievance

  794. comparing Israel

  795. to a bride

  796. that forgets

  797. the attire

  798. that marks her

  799. as a bride,

  800. someone who is

  801. betrothed to someone.

  802. Israel likewise

  803. has been unfaithful

  804. and Israel has become

  805. an expert in wickedness

  806. that they are now

  807. even teaching

  808. prostitutes.

  809. So that's how

  810. Israel has turned

  811. away.

  812. It sounds pretty bad.

  813. I'm sorry it's so heavy

  814. for the first part

  815. of the sermon.

  816. But there's hope

  817. because God calls

  818. us to return.

  819. And that's the second

  820. part of the sermon.

  821. Chapter 3,

  822. verses 1,

  823. and all the way

  824. to chapter 4,

  825. verse 4,

  826. it tells us how

  827. Israel should return

  828. to the Lord.

  829. And King Josiah

  830. did begin

  831. a nationwide

  832. reformation

  833. during his reign

  834. and that's a time

  835. when Jeremiah

  836. is ministering.

  837. But much of Israel's

  838. repentance,

  839. it turns out,

  840. was short-lived

  841. and it wasn't

  842. really genuine.

  843. And so God

  844. addresses that situation

  845. here in verses 1-5

  846. of chapter 3.

  847. Follow along with me.

  848. If a man divorces

  849. his wife

  850. and she goes

  851. from him

  852. and becomes

  853. another man's wife,

  854. will he return

  855. to her?

  856. Would not that land

  857. be greatly polluted?

  858. You have played

  859. the whore

  860. with many lovers

  861. and would you

  862. return to me?

  863. Declares the Lord.

  864. Lift up your eyes

  865. to the bare heights

  866. and see.

  867. Where have you

  868. not been ravished?

  869. By the wayside

  870. you have sat

  871. awaiting lovers

  872. like an Arab

  873. in the wilderness.

  874. You have polluted

  875. the land

  876. with your vile whoredom.

  877. Therefore,

  878. the showers

  879. have been withheld

  880. and the spring rain

  881. has not come.

  882. Yet you have

  883. the forehead

  884. of a whore.

  885. You refuse

  886. to be ashamed.

  887. Have you not

  888. just now

  889. called to me?

  890. My father,

  891. you are the friend

  892. of my youth.

  893. Will he be angry forever?

  894. Will he be indignant

  895. to the end?

  896. Behold,

  897. you have spoken

  898. but you have done

  899. all the evil

  900. that you could.

  901. Chapter 3,

  902. verse 1

  903. is referring to

  904. Deuteronomy 24,

  905. 1-4

  906. which forbids

  907. a man

  908. who divorced

  909. his wife

  910. from remarrying her

  911. if she had

  912. in the intervening period

  913. been married

  914. and divorced

  915. or widowed

  916. from a second husband.

  917. If the woman

  918. had not remarried

  919. in the intervening period

  920. it would be

  921. a happy reconciliation

  922. for her to return

  923. to her husband.

  924. But because

  925. the woman

  926. had remarried

  927. and then subsequently

  928. been divorced

  929. or widowed

  930. for her to get back

  931. with her husband

  932. was tantamount

  933. to adultery.

  934. And so that command

  935. in Deuteronomy 24

  936. outlawed

  937. basically prevented

  938. serial divorce

  939. and remarriage

  940. that could be used

  941. as a form

  942. of legal adultery.

  943. right?

  944. Well I've divorced

  945. and you can take

  946. back your own wife

  947. you can pass

  948. along wives

  949. among yourselves

  950. among immoral men

  951. and so that's

  952. what the law

  953. prevented

  954. and so if

  955. that's the case

  956. even with this

  957. human marriage

  958. God asks Israel

  959. you who have

  960. whored with many

  961. idols

  962. can you just

  963. return to me

  964. in this glib

  965. casual way?

  966. This is a serious

  967. matter that requires

  968. true repentance

  969. and transformation.

  970. Israel has been

  971. like an Arab

  972. in the wilderness

  973. so this is

  974. a proverbial

  975. expression from

  976. this time

  977. an Arab waits

  978. in the wilderness

  979. a marauder

  980. waits for the

  981. caravans to come

  982. to raid them

  983. in the same way

  984. Israel has waited

  985. for lovers to come

  986. by to pounce

  987. on them

  988. and yet

  989. will they return

  990. this casually

  991. to the Lord?

  992. Then in verse 4

  993. Jeremiah shifts

  994. metaphors

  995. and compares

  996. Israel's relationship

  997. to God

  998. with the relationship

  999. between a son

  1000. and a father

  1001. after being afflicted

  1002. with droughts

  1003. and recognizing

  1004. that their devotion

  1005. to Baal

  1006. the so-called

  1007. God of rain

  1008. has been futile

  1009. Israel says to God

  1010. glibly

  1011. my father

  1012. you are the friend

  1013. of my youth

  1014. will he be angry

  1015. forever?

  1016. Will he be indignant

  1017. to the end?

  1018. But God knows

  1019. that Israel's insincere

1020. because what they have said

1021. and what they are doing

  1022. does not line up

  1023. so he says

  1024. behold you have spoken

  1025. but you have done

  1026. all the evil

  1027. that you could

  1028. and their evil deeds

  1029. have belied

  1030. the smooth words

  1031. that they speak

  1032. and not only Israel

  1033. Judah has fallen

  1034. into the same trap

  1035. and Israel

  1036. at least

  1037. you know

  1038. didn't have anyone

  1039. to go before them

  1040. to show them

  1041. that this will be

  1042. the consequence

  1043. of their evil doing

  1044. but Judah had Israel

  1045. going before them

1046. they should have known better

  1047. yet Judah has

  1048. one-upped really Israel

  1049. in their wickedness

  1050. and they have not

  1051. returned to God

  1052. but they have instead

  1053. returned to him

1054. as it says in verses

  1055. 8 to 10

  1056. in pretense

  1057. they have not returned

  1058. with their whole heart

  1059. and so God says

  1060. in verses 12 to 14

  1061. return

  1062. faithless Israel

  1063. declares the Lord

1064. I will not look on you

  1065. in anger

  1066. for I am merciful

  1067. declares the Lord

1068. I will not be angry forever

  1069. only acknowledge

  1070. your guilt

  1071. that you rebelled

  1072. against the Lord

  1073. your God

  1074. and scattered

  1075. your favors

  1076. among foreigners

  1077. under every green tree

1078. and that you have not

  1079. obeyed my voice

  1080. declares the Lord

  1081. return

  1082. oh faithless children

  1083. declares the Lord

1084. for I am your master

  1085. I will take you

  1086. one from a city

1087. and two from a family

1088. and I will bring you

  1089. to Zion

  1090. notwithstanding

  1091. the earlier teaching

  1092. that a man

  1093. may not

  1094. remarry

  1095. his ex-wife

  1096. who was

  1097. remarried

  1098. in the intervening period

  1099. Jeremiah declares

  1100. that God

  1101. is still

  1102. willing to take

  1103. Israel back

  1104. as his spiritual bride

  1105. and this passage

  1106. really beautifully

  1107. captures God's mercy

  1108. and grace

  1109. towards sinners

  1110. because God says

  1111. over and over again

  1112. return

  1113. he used the language

  1114. return

  1115. oh faithless Israel

  1116. return

  1117. oh faithless children

1118. for I am your master

  1119. the word master

  1120. is Baal

  1121. in Hebrew

  1122. he's saying no

1123. I am your true master

  1124. not Baal

  1125. and so God is

  1126. and he exhorts them

  1127. to return repeatedly

  1128. in chapter 322

  1129. he says it again

  1130. return

  1131. oh faithless sons

  1132. I will heal

  1133. your faithlessness

  1134. and then again

  1135. in chapter 4

  1136. verse 1

  1137. if you return

  1138. oh Israel

  1139. declares the Lord

  1140. to me

  1141. you should

  1142. return

  1143. the words

  1144. return

  1145. and faithless

  1146. actually come from

  1147. the same

  1148. Hebrew root word

  1149. so the two words

  1150. form a poetic wordplay

  1151. that reveals

  1152. God's gracious

  1153. character

  1154. it's as if

  1155. he's saying

  1156. to us

  1157. saying to Israel

  1158. come back

  1159. to me

  1160. backsliders

  1161. return

  1162. return

  1163. to me

  1164. you who have

  1165. turned away

  1166. from me

  1167. God gives us

  1168. a second chance

  1169. God calls us

  1170. to himself

  1171. not when we are

  1172. faithful to him

  1173. but when we are

  1174. still unfaithful

  1175. while we're in

  1176. the middle

  1177. of our adultery

  1178. he calls us

  1179. to himself

  1180. not when we are

  1181. remorseful

  1182. repenting

  1183. of our sins

  1184. but while we are

  1185. still rebellious

  1186. he calls out

  1187. to us

  1188. when we are

  1189. still in our

  1190. sins

  1191. and backsliding

  1192. headlong

  1193. away from

  1194. God

  1195. he calls

  1196. to us

  1197. come back

  1198. to me

  1199. return

  1200. to me

  1201. and not only

  1202. does it reveal

  1203. God's heart

  1204. for us

  1205. that word

  1206. return

  1207. which is used

  1208. 16 times

  1209. just in chapter

  1210. 3 alone

  1211. perfectly captures

  1212. what our response

  1213. to God

  1214. should be

  1215. in order

  1216. to return

  1217. to God

  1218. we must

  1219. trace

  1220. our path

  1221. and renounce

  1222. all of our

  1223. sinful ways

  1224. we can't

  1225. simply continue

  1226. in sin

  1227. and say

  1228. to God

  1229. God

  1230. I return

  1231. to you

  1232. I'm here

  1233. because every

  1234. sin is a step

  1235. away from God

  1236. you can't take

  1237. a step forward

  1238. and backwards

  1239. at the same time

  1240. but when it comes

  1241. to sin

  1242. and repentance

  1243. going backward

  1244. is sometimes

  1245. the best way

  1246. forward

  1247. C.S. Lewis

  1248. illustrates this

  1249. in his book

  1250. Mere Christianity

  1251. he says

  1252. we all want

  1253. progress

  1254. but progress

  1255. means getting

  1256. nearer to the

  1257. place where you

  1258. want to be

  1259. and if you have

  1260. taken a wrong

  1261. turning

  1262. then to go

  1263. forward

  1264. does not

  1265. get you

  1266. any nearer

  1267. if you're

  1268. on the wrong

  1269. road

  1270. progress

  1271. means doing

  1272. an about

  1273. turn

  1274. and walking

  1275. back

  1276. to the right

  1277. road

  1278. and in that

  1279. case

  1280. the man

  1281. who turns

  1282. back

  1283. soonest

  1284. is the

  1285. most progressive

  1286. man

  1287. there's nothing

  1288. progressive

  1289. about being

  1290. pigheaded

  1291. and refusing

  1292. to admit

  1293. a mistake

  1294. and I think

  1295. if you look

  1296. at the present

  1297. state of the

  1298. world

  1299. it's pretty

  1300. plain

  1301. that humanity

  1302. has been

  1303. making some

  1304. big mistake

  1305. we're on

  1306. the wrong

  1307. road

  1308. and if that

  1309. is so

  1310. we must

  1311. go

  1312. back

  1313. going back

  1314. is the

  1315. quickest

  1316. way

  1317. on

  1318. that's

  1319. what it

  1320. means

  1321. to repent

  1322. of our sins

  1323. and to believe

  1324. in Jesus

  1325. Christ

  1326. you turn

  1327. from

  1328. your sins

  1329. away

  1330. from your

  1331. sins

  1332. and you

  1333. turn

  1334. toward

  1335. God

  1336. in faith

  1337. and you

  1338. cling

  1339. to him

  1340. and for

  1341. those of

  1342. you who

  1343. are not

  1344. yet a

  1345. follower

  1346. of Jesus

  1347. this is

  1348. how you

  1349. become

  1350. a follower

  1351. of Jesus

  1352. Christ

  1353. how you

  1354. become

  1355. a Christian

  1356. you might

  1357. be an

  1358. honest

  1359. person

  1360. that's

  1361. trying

  1362. to live

  1363. a good

  1364. life

  1365. but that's

  1366. not

  1367. good

  1368. enough

  1369. you might

  1370. be

  1371. imagine

  1372. this

  1373. think about

  1374. this

  1375. imagine

  1376. a very

  1377. dutiful

  1378. wife

  1379. right

  1380. she

  1381. fulfills

  1382. all

  1383. the

  1384. things

  1385. that

  1386. society

  1387. might

  1388. expect

  1389. her

  1390. to do

  1391. as a

  1392. good

  1393. wife

  1394. she

  1395. raises

  1396. her

  1397. children

  1398. well

  1399. she's

  1400. an

  1401. amazing

  1402. chef

  1403. who

  1404. prepares

  1405. a meal

  1406. for all

  1407. her

  1408. household

  1409. so that

  1410. they are

  1411. well

  1412. fed

  1413. and

  1414. in the

  1415. midst

  1416. of all

  1417. of that

  1418. she

  1419. still

  1420. has

  1421. time

  1422. to

  1423. get

  1424. some

  1425. extra

  1426. income

  1427. to

  1428. help

  1429. supplement

  1430. the

  1431. income

  1432. that her

  1433. husband

  1434. brings

  1435. in

  1436. she

  1437. does

  1438. everything

  1439. well

  1440. except

  1441. she

  1442. doesn't

  1443. love

  1444. her

  1445. husband

  1446. in fact

  1447. she

  1448. doesn't

  1449. even

  1450. acknowledge

  1451. him

  1452. if you

  1453. were to

  1454. observe

  1455. her life

  1456. you would

  1457. not even

  1458. know

  1459. that her

  1460. husband

  1461. exists

  1462. when you

  1463. ask her

  1464. why she

  1465. does all

  1466. of these

  1467. things

  1468. she

  1469. simply

  1470. says

  1471. it's

  1472. just

  1473. the

  1474. right

  1475. thing

  1476. to do

  1477. she

  1478. is

  1479. not

  1480. doing

  1481. any

  1482. of

  1483. this

  1484. for

  1485. her

  1486. husband

  1487. she

  1488. is

  1489. doing

  1490. it

  1491. for

  1492. herself

  1493. she

  1494. is

  1495. doing

  1496. it

  1497. for

  1498. her

  1499. children

  1500. she

  1501. is

  1502. doing

  1503. it

  1504. for

  1505. others

  1506. do you

  1507. think

  1508. she

  1509. is

  1510. a

  1511. good

  1512. wife

  1513. absolutely

  1514. not

  1515. she

  1516. is

  1517. derelict

  1518. in her

  1519. primary

  1520. duty

  1521. to

  1522. love

  1523. and

  1524. to

  1525. belong

  1526. to

  1527. and

  1528. to

  1529. support

  1530. her

  1531. husband

  1532. god

  1533. created

  1534. us

  1535. his

  1536. people

  1537. are

  1538. supposed

  1539. to

  1540. be

  1541. a

  1542. bride

  1543. for

  1544. him

  1545. he

  1546. created

  1547. us

  1548. to

  1549. have

  1550. a

  1551. relationship

  1552. with

  1553. him

  1554. and

  1555. that's

  1556. our

  1557. ultimate

  1558. eternal

  1559. divinely

  1560. ordained

  1561. purpose

  1562. he

  1563. designed

  1564. us

  1565. to

  1566. know

  1567. him

  1568. and

  1569. to

  1570. trust

  1571. him

  1572. and

  1573. to

  1574. love

  1575. him

  1576. and

  1577. he

  1578. pledged

  1579. his

  1580. people

  1581. as

  1582. a

  1583. bride

  1584. for

  1585. himself

  1586. yet

  1587. we

  1588. have

  1589. refused

  1590. to

  1591. acknowledge

  1592. him

  1593. in

  1594. our

  1595. ways

  1596. and

  1597. we

  1598. have

  1599. lived

  1600. not

  1601. for

  1602. him

  1603. but

  1604. for

  1605. ourselves

  1606. and

  1607. in

  1608. doing

  1609. so

  1610. we

  1611. have

  1612. effectively

  1613. turned

  1614. to

  1615. other

  1616. lovers

  1617. have

  1618. committed

  1619. adultery

  1620. against

  1621. God

  1622. that

  1623. prideful

  1624. unbelief

  1625. that

  1626. refusal

  1627. to

  1628. acknowledge

  1629. God

  1630. is at

  1631. the

  1632. root

  1633. of

  1634. all

  1635. sin

  1636. and

  1637. that's

  1638. why

  1639. every

  1640. sin

  1641. is a

  1642. personal

  1643. affront

  1644. to

  1645. God

  1646. and

  1647. if

  1648. you

  1649. are

  1650. not

  1651. yet

  1652. a

  1653. follower

  1654. of

  1655. Christ

  1656. that

  1657. describes

  1658. you

  1659. now

  1660. and

  1661. you

  1662. must

  1663. repent

  1664. of

  1665. your

  1666. sins

  1667. and

  1668. believe

  1669. in

  1670. Jesus

  1671. for

  1672. salvation

  1673. and

  1674. that

  1675. means

  1676. a

  1677. fresh

  1678. start

  1679. a

  1680. new

  1681. beginning

  1682. look

  1683. at

  1684. chapter

  1685. 4

  1686. verses

  1687. 3

  1688. to

  1689. 4

  1690. with

  1691. me

  1692. God

  1693. says

  1694. break

  1695. up

  1696. your

  1697. fallow

  1698. ground

  1699. and

  1700. sow

  1701. not

  1702. among

  1703. thorns

  1704. circumcise

  1705. yourselves

  1706. to the

  1707. Lord

  1708. remove

  1709. the

  1710. foreskin

  1711. of

  1712. your

  1713. hearts

  1714. O

  1715. men

  1716. of

  1717. Judah

  1718. and

  1719. inhabitants

  1720. of

  1721. Jerusalem

  1722. lest

  1723. my

  1724. wrath

  1725. go

  1726. forth

  1727. like

  1728. fire

  1729. and

  1730. burn

  1731. with

  1732. none

  1733. to

  1734. quench

  1735. it

  1736. because

  1737. of

  1738. your

  1739. evil

  1740. deeds

  1741. a

  1742. fallow

  1743. ground

  1744. soil

  1745. a

  1746. ground

  1747. that

  1748. has

  1749. never

  1750. been

  1751. tilled

  1752. before

  1753. and

  1754. a

  1755. land

  1756. that

  1757. is

  1758. tilled

  1759. of

  1760. course

  1761. is

  1762. easier

  1763. to

  1764. farm

  1765. but

  1766. a

  1767. land

  1768. that

  1769. is

  1770. tilled

  1771. also

  1772. more

  1773. readily

  1774. grows

  1775. thorns

  1776. and

  1777. thistles

  1778. and

  1779. so

  1780. often

  1781. Israelite

  1782. farmers

  1783. were

  1784. sowing

  1785. on

  1786. thorns

  1787. and

  1788. so

  1789. here

  1790. by

  1791. saying

  1792. break

  1793. up

  1794. your

  1795. fallow

  1796. ground

  1797. and

  1798. sow

  1799. not

  1800. among

  1801. thorns

  1802. he's

  1803. saying

  1804. the

  1805. same

  1806. thing

  1807. he's

  1808. saying

  1809. you

  1810. can't

  1811. just

  1812. change

  1813. what

  1814. you

  1815. have

  1816. you

  1817. need

  1818. a

  1819. complete

  1820. new

  1821. start

  1822. it

  1823. means

  1824. if

  1825. we

  1826. want

  1827. to

  1828. turn

  1829. to

  1830. the

  1831. Lord

  1832. it's

  1833. not

  1834. enough

  1835. to

  1836. get

  1837. a

  1838. little

  1839. modification

  1840. here

  1841. and

  1842. there

  1843. in

  1844. our

  1845. lives

  1846. a

  1847. little

  1848. alteration

  1849. here

  1850. and

  1851. there

  1852. we

  1853. need

  1854. not

  1855. a

  1856. mere

  1857. reformation

  1858. of

  1859. some

  1860. aspects

  1861. of

  1862. our

  1863. life

  1864. we

  1865. need

  1866. a

  1867. complete

  1868. transformation

  1869. God

  1870. says

  1871. circumcise

  1872. yourselves

  1873. to

  1874. the

  1875. Lord

  1876. but

  1877. lest

  1878. you

  1879. think

  1880. that

  1881. he's

  1882. merely

  1883. referring

  1884. to

  1885. the

  1886. physical

  1887. circumcision

  1888. that

  1889. marked

  1890. the

  1891. Jewish

  1892. people

  1893. as

  1894. God's

  1895. own

  1896. he

  1897. adds

  1898. remove

  1899. the

  1900. foreskin

  1901. of

  1902. your

  1903. hearts

  1904. external

  1905. conformity

  1906. to

  1907. God

  1908. is

  1909. not

  1910. enough

  1911. going

  1912. to

  1913. church

  1914. is

  1915. not

  1916. enough

  1917. doing

  1918. good

  1919. deeds

  1920. is

  1921. not

  1922. enough

  1923. you

  1924. need

  1925. to

  1926. become

  1927. a

  1928. new

  1929. person

  1930. in

  1931. order

  1932. to

  1933. be

  1934. saved

  1935. you

  1936. need

  1937. a

  1938. changed

  1939. heart

  1940. and

  1941. that's

  1942. why

  1943. it's

  1944. impossible

  1945. for us

  1946. to

  1947. return

  1948. to

  1949. God

  1950. on

  1951. our

  1952. own

  1953. that's

  1954. not

  1955. something

  1956. that

  1957. we

  1958. can

  1959. do

  1960. in

  1961. our

  1962. own

  1963. strength

  1964. despite

  1965. God's

  1966. offer

  1967. of

  1968. forgiveness

  1969. and

  1970. his

  1971. restoration

  1972. Israel

  1973. and

  1974. Judah

  1975. never

  1976. fully

  1977. return

  1978. to

  1979. God

  1980. they

  1981. become

  1982. repeat

  1983. offenders

  1984. over

  1985. and over

  1986. again

  1987. committing

  1988. this

  1989. adultery

  1990. and we

  1991. likewise

  1992. are

  1993. incapable

  1994. of being

  1995. faithful

  1996. to

  1997. God

  1998. because

  1999. of our

  2000. hearts

  2001. which

  2002. are

  2003. fickle

  2004. and

  2005. incorrigible

  2006. so

  2007. then

  2008. how

  2009. can

  2010. we

  2011. be

  2012. saved

  2013. Paul

  2051. he

  2052. says

  2053. that

  2054. there

  2055. is

  2056. no

  2057. distinction

  2058. between

  2059. the

  2060. circumcised

  2061. Jew

  2062. and the

  2063. uncircumcised

  2064. Gentile

  2065. because

  2066. circumcision

  2067. is a

  2068. matter

  2069. of the

  2070. heart

  2071. and

  2072. then

  2073. he

  2074. says

  2075. this

  2076. all

  2077. have

  2078. sinned

  2079. and fall

  2080. short

  2081. of the

  2082. glory

  2083. of God

  2084. and are

  2085. justified

  2086. by his

  2087. grace

  2088. as a

  2089. gift

  2090. through

  2091. the

  2092. redemption

  2093. that is

  2094. in

  2095. Christ

  2096. Jesus

  2097. whom

  2098. God

  2099. put

  2100. forward

  2101. as a

  2102. propitiation

  2103. by his

  2104. blood

  2105. to be

  2106. received

  2107. by

  2108. faith

  2109. Jesus

  2110. is the

  2111. one

  2112. who

  2113. can

  2114. circumcise

  2115. your

  2116. heart

  2117. Jesus

  2118. is the

  2119. one

  2120. who

  2121. can

  2122. redeem

  2123. us

  2124. from

  2125. slavery

  2126. Jesus

  2127. is the

  2128. one

  2129. who

  2130. can

  2131. atorn

  2132. for

  2133. our

  2134. sins

  2135. and

  2136. Jesus

  2137. accomplished

  2138. this

  2139. because

  2140. he

  2141. became

  2142. the

  2143. good

  2144. shepherd

  2145. that

  2146. lays

  2147. down

  2148. his

  2149. life

  2150. for

  2151. his

  2152. sheep

  2153. as he

  2154. said

  2155. in

  2156. John

  2157. he

  2158. was the

  2159. shepherd

  2160. after God's

  2161. own

  2162. heart

  2163. that

  2164. God

  2165. promised

  2166. he

  2167. will

  2168. return

  2169. to

  2170. that

  2171. final

  2172. promise

  2173. in

  2174. chapter

  2175. 3

  2176. verses

  2177. 15

  2187. verses

  2188. 15

  2189. to

  2190. 18

  2191. this

  2192. is

  2193. how

  2194. we

  2195. know

  2196. how

  2197. God

  2198. saves

  2199. how

  2200. God

  2201. intends

  2202. to

  2203. save

  2204. us

  2205. through

  2206. Jesus

  2207. he

  2208. says

  2209. and

  2210. I

  2211. will

  2212. give

  2213. you

  2214. shepherds

  2215. after

  2216. my

  2217. own

  2218. heart

  2219. who

  2220. will

  2221. feed

  2222. you

  2223. with

  2224. knowledge

  2225. and

  2226. understanding

  2227. and

  2228. when

  2229. you

  2230. have

  2231. multiplied

  2232. and

  2233. been

  2234. fruitful

  2235. in

  2236. the

  2237. land

  2238. in

  2239. not

  2243. at

  2244. that

  2245. time

  2246. Jerusalem

  2247. shall

  2248. be

  2249. called

  2250. the

  2251. throne

  2252. of

  2253. the

  2254. Lord

  2255. and

  2256. all

  2257. nations

  2258. shall

  2259. gather

  2260. to

  2261. it

  2262. to

  2263. the

  2265. of

  2266. the

  2267. Lord

  2268. in

  2269. Jerusalem

  2270. and

  2271. they

  2272. shall

  2273. no

  2274. more

  2275. stubbornly

  2276. follow

  2277. their

  2278. own

  2279. evil

  2280. heart

  2281. in

  2282. those

  2283. days

  2284. the

  2285. house

  2286. of

  2287. Judah

  2288. shall

  2289. join

  2290. the

  2291. house

  2292. of

  2293. Israel

  2294. and

  2295. together

  2296. they

  2297. shall

  2298. come

  2299. from

  2300. the

  2301. land

  2302. of

  2303. the

  2304. north

  2305. to

  2306. the

  2307. land

  2308. that

  2309. I

  2310. gave

  2311. your

  2312. fathers

  2313. for

  2314. a

  2315. heritage

  2316. these

  2317. shepherds

  2318. that

  2319. God

  2320. promised

  2321. these

  2322. rulers

  2323. after

  2324. God's

  2325. own

  2326. heart

  2327. that's

  2328. a

  2329. phrase

  2330. that's

  2331. derived

  2332. from

  2333. how

  2334. God

  2335. described

  2336. David

  2337. as

  2338. a

  2339. man

  2340. after

  2341. his

  2342. own

  2343. heart

  2344. this

  2345. is

  2346. a

  2347. prophecy

  2348. of

  2349. a

  2350. true

  2351. king

  2352. in

  2353. the

  2354. line

  2355. of

  2356. David

  2357. that

  2358. will

  2359. come

  2360. and

  2361. that

  2362. was

  2363. Jesus

  2364. who

  2365. was

  2366. the

  2367. new

  2368. David

  2369. the

  2370. ultimate

  2371. Davidic

  2372. king

  2373. he

  2374. was

  2375. the

  2376. one

  2377. who

  2378. was

  2379. fully

  2380. after

  2381. God's

  2382. own

  2384. and

  2385. he

  2386. came

  2387. as

  2388. a

  2389. shepherd

  2390. he

  2391. said

  2392. he

  2393. is

  2394. the

  2395. good

  2396. shepherd

  2397. that

  2398. lays

  2399. down

  2400. his

  2401. life

  2402. for

  2403. sheep

  2404. in

  2405. John

  2406. 10

  2410. on

  2411. the

  2412. cross

  2413. for

  2414. our

  2415. sins

  2416. because

  2417. he

  2418. knew

  2419. that

  2420. we

  2421. could

  2422. not

  2423. earn

  2424. and

  2425. attain

  2426. this

  2427. righteousness

  2428. that

  2429. we

  2430. need

  2431. on

  2432. our

  2433. own

  2434. Jesus

  2435. died

  2436. for

  2437. our

  2438. sins

  2439. and

  2440. gave

  2441. his

  2442. perfect

  2443. righteousness

  2444. to

  2445. us

  2446. on

  2447. the

  2448. cross

  2449. and

  2450. he

  2451. rose

  2452. again

  2453. and

  2454. sent

  2455. his

  2456. Holy

  2457. the

  2458. covenant

  2459. of

  2460. the

  2461. Lord

  2462. will

  2463. be

  2464. no

  2465. more

  2466. at

  2467. that

  2468. time

  2469. Jerusalem

  2470. shall

  2471. be

  2472. called

  2473. the

  2474. throne

  2475. of

  2476. the

  2477. Lord

  2478. the

  2479. ark

  2480. which

  2481. represented

  2482. the

  2483. presence

  2484. of

  2485. God

  2486. Israelites

  2487. envisioned

  2488. the

  2489. ark

  2490. as

  2491. the

  2492. footstool

  2493. of

  2494. God

  2495. they

  2496. believed

  2497. that

  2498. the

  2499. throne

  2500. of

  2501. God

  2502. was

  2503. in

  2504. heaven

  2505. and

  2506. the

  2507. footstool

  2508. of

  2509. God

  2510. was

  2511. on

  2512. earth

  2513. and

  2514. by

  2515. God's

  2516. what

  2517. is

  2518. God

  2519. saying

  2520. now

  2521. he

  2522. is

  2523. saying

  2524. the

  2525. footstool

  2526. will

  2527. be

  2528. no

  2529. more

  2530. because

  2531. the

  2532. very

  2533. throne

  2534. of

  2535. God

  2536. will

  2537. be

  2538. in

  2539. our

  2540. midst

  2541. that's

  2542. in

  2543. Jesus

  2544. Christ

  2545. and

  2546. he

  2547. reigns

  2548. from

  2549. the

  2550. cross

  2551. he

  2552. ascends

  2553. his throne

  2554. on the

  2555. cross

  2556. dies

  2557. for

  2558. our

  2559. sins

  2560. and

  2561. he

  2562. rises

  2563. victoriously

  2564. now

  2565. he's

  2566. seated

  2567. at

  2568. the

  2569. father's

  2570. right

  2571. hand

  2572. in

  2573. heaven

  2574. and

  2575. he

  2576. is

  2577. beckoning

  2578. us

  2579. to

  2580. come

  2581. if

  2582. you

  2583. are

  2584. not

  2585. yet

  2586. a

  2587. follower

  2588. of

  2589. Christ

  2590. I want

  2591. to

  2592. invite

  2593. you

  2594. to

  2595. this

  2596. remind

  2597. you

  2598. again

  2599. that

  2600. he's

  2601. the

  2602. fountain

  2603. of

  2604. living

  2605. waters

  2606. that

  2607. rather

  2608. than

  2609. hewing

  2610. out

  2611. broken

  2612. cisterns

  2613. that

  2614. can

  2615. hold

  2616. no

  2617. water

  2618. that

  2619. you

  2620. should

  2621. come

  2622. to

  2623. him

  2624. in

  2625. John

  2626. 4

  2627. 14

  2628. Jesus

  2629. says

  2630. this

  2631. to

  2632. Samaritan

  2633. woman

  2634. whoever

  2635. drinks

  2636. of

  2637. the

  2638. water

  2639. that

  2640. I

  2641. will

  2642. give

  2643. him

  2644. will

  2645. never

  2646. be

  2647. thirsty

  2648. again

  2649. the

  2650. water

  2651. that

  2652. I

  2653. will

  2654. give

  2655. him

  2656. will

  2657. become

  2658. in

  2659. him

  2660. a

  2661. spring

  2662. of

  2663. water

  2664. welling

  2665. up

  2666. to

  2667. eternal

  2668. life

  2669. I

  2670. don't

  2671. know what

  2672. you're

  2673. turning

  2674. to

  2675. if you're

  2676. not a

  2677. follower

  2678. of Christ

  2679. what

  2680. broken

  2682. that

  2683. you

  2684. have

  2685. in

  2686. your

  2687. life

  2688. but

  2689. you

  2690. must

  2691. come

  2692. to

  2693. Christ

  2694. he's

  2695. the

  2696. only

  2697. one

  2698. that

  2699. can

  2700. give

  2701. you

  2702. this

  2703. wellspring

  2704. that's

  2705. eternal

  2706. it

  2707. doesn't

  2708. matter

  2709. how

  2710. much

  2711. you

  2712. have

  2713. sinned

  2714. it

  2715. doesn't

  2716. matter

  2717. how

  2718. much

  2719. you

  2720. have

  2721. fallen

  2722. back

  2723. and

  2724. turned

  2725. away

  2726. from

  2727. him

  2728. and

  2729. this

  2730. this

  2731. passage

  2732. teaches

  2733. it

  2734. clearly

  2735. that

  2736. God's

  2737. not

  2738. asking

  2739. you

  2740. to

  2741. come

  2742. halfway

  2743. and

  2744. meet

  2746. if

  2747. you're

  2750. God's

  2756. halfway

  2757. and

  2758. meet

  2759. him

  2760. he's

  2776. and

  2777. glorious

  2778. in

  2779. your

  2781. is

  2782. a

  2783. gift

  2784. from

  2785. God

  2786. that's

  2787. intended

  2788. to

  2789. point

  2790. you

  2791. to

  2792. the

  2793. Lord

  2794. and

  2797. that

  2798. you

  2799. have

  2800. committed

  2801. against

  2802. him

  2803. God

  2804. has

  2805. offered

  2806. forgiveness

  2807. and

  2808. paved

  2809. the way

  2810. for

  2811. you

  2812. to

  2816. through

  2817. Jesus

  2818. Christ

  2819. he's

  2821. all

  2822. the

  2824. for

  2825. you

  2826. and

  2827. you

  2855. in

  2856. Christ

  2857. I

  2858. urge

  2859. you

  2860. also

  2861. to

  2862. come

  2863. to

  2864. the

  2865. waters

  2866. stop

  2867. seeking

  2868. to

  2869. save

  2870. yourselves

  2871. with

  2872. your

  2873. own

  2874. good

  2875. works

  2876. come

  2877. to

  2878. Jesus

  2879. for

  2880. strength

  2881. and

  2882. stop

  2883. trying

  2884. to

  2885. serve

  2886. and

  2887. live

  2888. and

  2889. obey

  2890. in

  2891. your

  2892. own

  2893. strength

  2894. return

  2895. again

  2896. and

  2897. again

  2898. to

  2899. this

  2900. fountain

  2901. of

  2902. living

  2903. water

  2904. when

  2905. you

  2906. feel

  2907. discouraged

  2908. when

  2909. you

  2910. feel

  2911. that

  2912. you

  2913. failed

  2914. God

  2915. again

  2916. when

  2917. you

  2918. feel

  2919. like

  2920. you

  2921. disappointed

  2922. him

  2923. when

  2924. you

  2925. feel

  2926. like

  2927. giving

  2928. up

  2929. return

  2930. again

  2931. and

  2932. again

  2933. to

  2934. this

  2935. fountain

  2936. because

  2937. there

  2938. is

  2939. grace

  2940. enough

  2941. for

  2942. you

  2943. there

  2944. is

  2945. mercy

  2946. enough

  2947. for

  2948. you

  2949. and

  2950. only

  2951. by

  2952. drinking

  2953. deeply

  2954. of

  2955. this

  2956. living

  2957. water

  2958. can

  2959. we

  2960. have

  2961. the

  2962. spiritual

  2963. life

  2964. the

  2965. vigor

  2966. and

  2967. vitality

  2968. to

  2969. love

  2970. and

  2971. obey

  2972. him

  2973. in

  2974. this

  2975. life

  2976. please

  2977. close

  2978. your eyes

  2979. with

  2980. me

  2981. and

  2982. reflect

  2983. for a

  2984. try to

  2985. picture

  2986. God

  2987. beckoning

  2988. you

  2989. to

  2990. come

  2991. and

  2992. try to

  2993. reflect

  2994. on what

  2995. it is

  2996. that is

  2997. holding

  2998. you

  2999. back

  3000. the

  3001. broken

  3002. systems

  3003. that

  3004. you

  3005. keep

  3006. returning

  3007. to

  3008. and

  3009. after

  3010. you

  3011. have

  3012. reflected

  3013. for some

  3014. moment

  3015. we'll

  3016. pray

  3017. spend

  3018. our

  3019. time

  3020. praying

  3021. together

  3022. as

  3023. the

  3024. body

  3025. of

  3026. Christ
