  1. We're in the dark of Christ.

  2. Good to worship with you this morning.

  3. My name is Sean.

  4. For those of you who are visiting,

  5. it's my privilege to preach God's word to you.

  6. And before we do that, let me pray and ask for God's help.

  7. Heavenly Father, we believe that you speak from your word today.

  8. And we are here to listen to you.

  9. We want to submit ourselves to you and to your word.

  10. So I want you to address us, convict us, comfort us, assure us

  11. of our salvation stored up in Jesus Christ.

  12. Amen.

  13. In Jesus' name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. We're in Jeremiah 26, 1 to 24.

  16. And according to the Wycliffe Bible translators,

  17. there are still about 1,600 languages that still don't have any Bible translation.

  18. And this is in spite of the fact that Bible is the single most translated work of literature

  19. in human history.

  20. But we here as English speakers are spoiled because according to the American Bible Society,

  21. there are about 900 different English translations of the Bible in the world,

  22. especially if you count both the partial and the complete translations.

  23. And it's no wonder then that we are sometimes tempted to take the English Bibles that we have

  24. in our hands for granted.

  25. But this wasn't always the case.

  26. In the early 16th century, William Tyndale attempted to translate the whole Bible into English for the

  27. first time because he believed that, quote,

  28. it was impossible to establish the people in any truth unless the scriptures were plainly laid before their eyes

  29. in their mother tongue.

  30. And it's hard to believe that such an academic and, you know,

  31. pious pursuit would come with occupational hazards.

  32. But it did because at the time, Roman Catholic Church held their services mostly in Latin,

  33. which most Christians in the world no longer understood.

  34. And the Latin translation of the Bible was only accessible to the trained clergy.

  35. And they at the time, the Roman Catholic Church, violently opposed any attempt to translate the Bible

  36. into the lay language of the people because they believed that doing so undermined the authority

  37. of the Catholic Church.

  38. So in 1536, William Tyndale was convicted of heresy and executed by strangulation.

  39. And afterward, his body was burned at the stake as a demonstration and a warning to similarly-minded believers.

  40. But his translation of the Bible, known as the Tyndale Bible, was completed after his death.

  41. And it became the first mass-produced English Bible in the world.

  42. And it spread like wildfire.

  43. It became the basis for subsequent English translations of the Bible, including about 90% of the King James Version.

  44. It's directly Tyndale's translation.

  45. For this reason, many English scholars contend that William Tyndale was more influential in shaping

  46. and enriching the English language than even William Shakespeare.

  47. Now, Tyndale gave his life that we might have God's Word in English.

  48. And he wasn't the first nor the last to give his life in order to make God's Word available to all people,

  49. in order to speak God's Word even at the cost of his own life.

  50. Because about 2,000 years before William Tyndale, we see here Prophet Jeremiah engaged in a similar struggle

  51. and a contest to proclaim the Word of God when he was facing resistance,

  52. even at the cost of his own life, even at the risk of his own life in this case.

  53. And really, the main point of this passage is that we should listen to and speak the Word of the Lord

  54. even to the point of death.

  55. So first, in the first six verses, we'll see the Word spoken.

  56. And then in the rest of the passage, we'll see the Word spurned by the religious leaders.

  57. And so verse 1 tells us, read with me,

  58. In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah,

  59. this Word came from the Lord.

  60. We usually use the Word as an object, right?

  61. So we say to somebody, hey, let me say a word.

  62. Or, can I have a word with you?

  63. But unconventionally in this verse, the Word is the subject of the sentence.

  64. This Word came from the Lord,

  65. as if the Word itself is a character in the story or a person with its own agency, right?

  66. And Jeremiah did not come up with this Word, that means.

  67. He is the messenger of this Word, but he's not the author of this Word.

  68. This Word came from the Lord.

  69. And this phrase, the Word of the Lord came to me,

  70. really begins most of the major sections of this book.

  71. And it's conveying to us something unique about God's Word.

  72. Ever since J.L. Austin, who was a British philosopher and linguist,

  73. wrote the book, How to Do Things with Words, in 1962,

  74. a lot of scholarly ink had been spilled over the difference between

  75. constative words and performative words.

  76. So just bear with me for a second.

  77. This is relevant.

  78. So constative words inform us, right?

  79. They tell us something about something, right?

  80. So they inform us, constative words.

  81. Performative words, they perform something.

  82. So constative words, they say something,

  83. but performative words, they do something.

  84. So let me illustrate with a simple example.

  85. When you tell someone, thank you, or I'm sorry, right?

  86. You're not just describing that you are thankful or that you feel sorry.

  87. You're actually thanking that person and apologizing to that person.

  88. You're doing something with your words to that person.

  89. Those words are performative, not merely informative.

  90. And when someone says in response, I forgive you,

  91. that's also performing something.

  92. It's forgiving, dispensing forgiveness, not merely saying that,

  93. hey, well, sure, maybe I'll think about forgiving you.

  94. When at a wedding, for example, the emcee tells you,

  95. well, the wedding will start promptly at 11 a.m., that's informative, right?

  96. But when two couples stand and face each other,

  97. and before witnesses and before a duly ordained minister of the gospel,

  98. they say to each other, I do.

  99. That's performative.

  100. They're making a promise, and they're taking vows upon themselves

  101. for each other, toward each other.

  102. And then when the minister responds and says,

  103. I now pronounce you husband and wife, again, that's performative.

  104. It's not just an announcement.

  105. It's a pronouncement that affects the union of the two people

  106. that are coming in together in marriage.

  107. But there's something important about performative words.

  108. It's that it's only effective, it only has performative power

  109. when the person speaking the word has the proper authority to do so.

  110. So if some random stranger comes up to a man and a woman that's dating and says,

  111. I pronounce you husband and wife, it doesn't do anything, right?

  112. When you go to court and a judge says to you, not guilty, that does something.

  113. It acquits you of guilt, exempts you from punishment.

  114. But when some random civilian comes to you and says, oh, not guilty, means nothing.

  115. Why am I getting into all this?

  116. Because God's word is not merely informative, but performative.

  117. Because God is the creator and Lord over all things,

  118. because he has all authority, power, and dominion.

  119. When he speaks, when his word comes,

  120. it always comes with performative authority and efficacy.

  121. So when I say, let there be light, nothing happens, right?

  122. Because I'm just a creature.

  123. I can't create anything.

  124. But when God says, let there be light,

  125. light is created out of nothing.

  126. When we say, I'll be there tomorrow,

  127. we may or may not show up, depending on how reliable that person is,

  128. and depending on the circumstances.

  129. Because we are fickle and fallible creatures,

  130. and our words often fall to the ground.

  131. But when God says, I am with you,

  132. always to the end of the age,

  133. as Jesus said at the end of his great commission,

  134. you can count on that.

  135. That's going to happen.

  136. It's guaranteed.

  137. And when God, so when God renames someone in the Bible,

  138. the meaning of that name becomes a reality in their life.

  139. When God orders a blessing,

  140. a real blessing is imparted.

  141. When he orders a curse,

  142. a real curse takes hold in the person's life.

  143. Because when God says anything,

  144. it happens.

  145. Hebrews 4.12 says,

  146. The word of God is living and active,

  147. sharper than any two-edged sword,

  148. piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,

  149. of joints and of marrow,

  150. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  151. The word of God is living and active.

  152. It pierces our souls and searches our hearts.

  153. So when we think of scripture,

  154. we shouldn't think of it merely as this encyclopedia of spiritual knowledge.

  155. Yes, scripture informs us,

  156. but it also transforms us.

  157. Scripture is not merely a record of what God has said in the past.

  158. God speaks through his word today.

  159. And by the power of the spirit,

  160. the word of God reveals God to us.

  161. It renews our minds.

  162. It revives our hearts.

  163. It confronts us with the God who speaks for himself.

  164. That he is a God who speaks and not a mute God

  165. that we can attribute whatever we want to.

  166. Scripture, through his word, God makes promises to us.

  167. He commands us,

  168. comforts us,

  169. convicts us.

  170. So as Isaiah 55,

  171. which we read today,

  172. says,

  173. for as the rain and the snow come down from heaven

  174. and do not return there,

  175. but water the earth,

  176. making it bring forth and sprout,

  177. giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

  178. so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.

  179. It shall not return to me empty,

  180. but it shall accomplish that which I purpose

  181. and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

  182. The word of God goes forth

  183. and accomplishes God's purposes.

  184. God's word is not a boring, static thing.

  185. It's not like any other book.

  186. It's living and active.

  187. So when verse 1 tells us

  188. that this word came from the Lord,

  189. it's not a dull and dry,

  190. this formulaic statement

  191. because it's the word from the Lord.

  192. It's dynamic and dramatic.

  193. It's saying it means we better listen up

  194. because the king is about to say something

  195. and his word has decretive force.

  196. This is why at the end of every scripture reading,

  197. we say as a church,

  198. this is the word of the Lord

  199. to impress upon our minds this truth,

  200. important truth.

  201. What should this mean for us?

  202. Is daily Bible reading for you a chore

  203. or is it something you cherish?

  204. Do you yawn at God's word?

  205. Or do you tremble at God's word?

  206. Do you come on Sunday morning

  207. to sit under the preaching of God's word apathetically

  208. or in eager anticipation

  209. of what God might say to you and do in you?

  210. So let's listen with bated breath

  211. for what God says next.

  212. Verses 2 to 3.

  213. Thus says the Lord,

  214. stand in the court of the Lord's house

  215. and speak to all the cities of Judah

  216. that come to worship in the house of the Lord

  217. and speak all the words

  218. that I command you to speak to them.

  219. Do not hold back a word.

  220. The historical context of this sermon

  221. that Jeremiah is giving

  222. as well as the content,

  223. it's identical to the sermon

  224. that Jeremiah was giving in chapter 7,

  225. verses 1 to 15.

  226. So it's likely a continuation of that time.

  227. And here, Jeremiah is commanded repeatedly

  228. to speak the words of the Lord.

  229. And the word speak

  230. is actually just the verbal form

  231. of the word word.

  232. It's the same.

  233. So it's very repetitive

  234. reading through this passage.

  235. Speak this.

  236. Speak these words.

  237. Word.

  238. Repeated 16 times in this chapter.

  239. That's really the main idea

  240. of this passage

  241. to reinforce the fact

  242. that it's God's word that is coming.

  243. It is God who is speaking.

  244. And because of that,

  245. Jeremiah is not to meddle with any of it,

  246. but to faithfully speak the word of God.

  247. And because of this,

  248. it says in verse 3,

  249. speak all the words that I command, right?

  250. God says,

  251. not and don't hold back a word, right?

  252. The phrase not holding back a word

  253. is particularly vivid

  254. because the word holding back

  255. literally means here

  256. to shave or to trim.

  257. So God's telling Jeremiah,

  258. don't clip off any of it.

  259. Don't you trim any of my words.

  260. Don't leave any of it out.

  261. And I think God knows

  262. that Jeremiah is entering

  263. into a hostile crowd.

  264. Jeremiah knew well

  265. that his audience

  266. could reject his word

  267. and punish him.

  268. That God's word

  269. may not be received favorably.

  270. He was likely aware

  271. that there could be severe,

  272. even fatal consequences

  273. for speaking God's word.

  274. And even then,

  275. God tells him,

  276. you are not at liberty

  277. to leave out any of my words

  278. because they are my words.

  279. He was to speak every single word

  280. that God commands.

  281. And this is a recurring command

  282. throughout scripture.

  283. For example,

  284. after relaying the commandments of God,

  285. Moses wrote this in Deuteronomy 4.2,

  286. you shall not add to the word

  287. that I command you,

  288. nor take from it

  289. that you may keep the commandments

  290. of the Lord your God

  291. that I command you.

  292. We are,

  293. as God's people,

  294. not at liberty

  295. to ignore the parts of God's word

  296. that we don't like.

  297. Do you take God at his word?

  298. It's tempting to trim God's word

  299. to make it fit our expectations.

  300. It's tempting to cherry pick God's word

  301. and turn only to the passages

  302. that seem to corroborate our opinions,

  303. not contradict us.

  304. It's tempting to shave off God's word

  305. to slid it.

  306. It doesn't offend our cultural sensitivities

  307. or sensibilities.

  308. It's tempting to search God's word

  309. for reflections of ourselves

  310. rather than the reflection

  311. of the glory of God.

  312. But we must never yield

  313. to such temptations.

  314. We must listen to all of it.

  315. We must speak all of it,

  316. obey all of it.

  317. We must not shrink

  318. from declaring the whole counsel

  319. of God.

  320. And that's why,

  321. as a church,

  322. we make it our practice

  323. to alternate

  324. between the Old and New Testaments

  325. and preach through the entire books

  326. of the Bible at a time.

  327. And it's partly because

  328. I don't trust myself.

  329. If we jump from one place to another

  330. intentionally or not,

  331. we end up self-selecting parts

  332. of scripture

  333. that we naturally gravitate toward.

  334. Parts that are familiar to us.

  335. Parts that are easier

  336. to preach and accept.

  337. Parts that we think

  338. better suits our needs.

  339. And there is a time and place

  340. for such topical teaching

  341. from scripture.

  342. But if that becomes

  343. our predominant

  344. or exclusive diet,

  345. scripture will only speak

  346. to our perceived needs,

  347. which are not necessarily

  348. our real needs.

  349. it's like a sick person

  350. self-diagnosing himself,

  351. his disease,

  352. with his limited medical knowledge

  353. using Google or whatnot.

  354. Instead of letting a trained

  355. and qualified doctor

  356. methodically question

  357. and thoroughly examine him

  358. for an accurate diagnosis.

  359. God doesn't waste his words.

  360. We need all of God's word

  361. to address us.

  362. So likewise,

  363. Jeremiah is to speak

  364. all of God's words

  365. without holding any of it back.

  366. And the goal

  367. of Jeremiah's proclamation

  368. is that Judah might listen.

  369. In the same way

  370. that the word speak

  371. is repeated throughout

  372. this passage,

  373. the word listen

  374. or hear,

  375. which also means obey,

  376. is repeated 11 times

  377. throughout this chapter.

  378. God speaks

  379. through his prophets

  380. and God's people

  381. are to listen and obey.

  382. So God says,

  383. read with me,

  384. verses 3 to 6.

  385. It may be they will listen

  386. and everyone turn

  387. from his evil way

  388. that I may relent

  389. of the disaster

  390. that I intend to do to them

  391. because of their evil deeds.

  392. You shall say to them,

  393. thus says the Lord,

  394. if you will not listen to me

  395. to walk in my law

  396. that I have set before you

  397. and to listen

  398. to the words of my servants,

  399. the prophets

  400. whom I sent to you urgently,

  401. though you have not listened,

  402. then I will make this house

  403. like Shiloh

  404. and I will make this city

  405. a curse for all the nations

  406. of the earth.

  407. If they heed God's words

  408. and turn from their evil ways,

  409. then they will be spared

  410. and evil will not come unto them.

  411. Disaster will not come on them.

  412. But if they don't,

  413. it will fall on them

  414. like Shiloh.

  415. Shiloh was the place

  416. where the tabernacle of God

  417. was formally set up,

  418. the housing for God.

  419. But due to Israel's disobedience,

  420. God abandoned Shiloh

  421. and the place

  422. was subsequently reduced

  423. to a heap of ruins.

  424. And that's what God

  425. is saying here,

  426. that this will happen

  427. to Jerusalem also.

  428. So that's the word spoken.

  429. And from verse 7 and onward,

  430. we see how these religious leaders,

  431. the priests and the prophets

  432. and all the people

  433. who are Jeremiah

  434. speaking these words

  435. in the temple,

  436. how they spurned the word of God.

  437. It's the word spurned.

  438. It says in verses 8 to 9,

  439. And when Jeremiah

  440. had finished speaking

  441. all that the Lord

  442. had commanded him to speak

  443. to all the people,

  444. then the priests

  445. and the prophets

  446. and all the people

  447. laid hold of him,

  448. saying,

  449. You shall die.

  450. Why have you prophesied

  451. in the name of the Lord,

  452. saying,

  453. This house shall be like Shiloh,

  454. and this city shall be desolate

  455. without inhabitant?

  456. And all the people

  457. gathered around Jeremiah

  458. in the house of the Lord.

  459. So Jeremiah is delivering

  460. this prophecy

  461. in the temple precinct,

  462. so it's not surprising

  463. that the priests

  464. and the prophets

  465. were in the audience.

  466. But all the other people

  467. that are also there

  468. are probably there

  469. to worship

  470. because they're at the temple.

  471. The worshipers

  472. that are gathered

  473. around the temple.

  474. And after Jeremiah

  475. gives the sermon,

  476. it must have caused

  477. quite the stir

  478. and the commotion

  479. because people are now

  480. thronging around him.

  481. And the result,

  482. it says,

  483. All the people

  484. gathered around Jeremiah

  485. in the house of the Lord.

  486. And the word gathered,

  487. the word is interesting here

  488. because it's a neutral word

  489. that could refer

  490. either to a good crowd,

  491. for example,

  492. a congregation gathered

  493. for worship,

  494. but it's also used

  495. sometimes in Scripture

  496. to refer to a mob

  497. that has hostile intentions.

  498. So in this case,

  499. the congregation of worship,

  500. people who had gathered

  501. to worship God,

  502. now is degenerating

  503. into this hostile mob

  504. that's beginning

  505. to throng around Jeremiah

  506. and he's feeling threatened

  507. because they say to him,

  508. you shall die.

  509. The verdict of the public

  510. was that Jeremiah

  511. was a blasphemer,

  512. someone who spoke

  513. what is false

  514. in the name of the Lord

  515. and the blasphemer

  516. is because they threatened

  517. the very foundation

  518. of Israel

  519. which was a society,

  520. it's a theocratic nation

  521. founded on worship

  522. of the true God

  523. and because of that,

  524. it was punishable by death,

  525. blasphemy was

  526. in the Old Testament.

  527. And fortunately for Jeremiah,

  528. the court officials

  529. are also at hand

  530. to restore order

  531. and initiate

  532. a proper legal procedure

  533. and so he says

  534. in verse 10,

  535. when the officials

  536. of Judah heard

  537. these things,

  538. they came up

  539. from the king's house

  540. to the house of the Lord

  541. and took their seat

  542. in the entry

  543. of the new gate

  544. of the house of the Lord.

  545. The commotion

  546. has reached

  547. the king's palace

  548. and so the rulers

  549. of the nation

  550. came down to the temple

  551. and took their seat.

  552. That's a formal way

  553. of saying that

  554. they took the seat

  555. for rendering judgment.

  556. The court is now

  557. in session.

  558. And in verse 11,

  559. the prosecution

  560. presents their case.

  561. This man deserves

  562. the sentence of death

  563. because he has prophesied

  564. against the city

  565. as you have heard

  566. with your own ears.

  567. Notice how they are

  568. more concerned

  569. with Jeremiah

  570. prophesying harm

  571. against the city

  572. rather than with

  573. whether or not

  574. he is truly speaking

  575. the word of the Lord.

  576. Because the real issue

  577. at hand is not

  578. whether Jeremiah's prophecy

  579. bodes well or ill

  580. for Jerusalem.

  581. The real issue

  582. is whether Jeremiah

  583. is speaking God's word.

  584. Because if God

  585. sent Jeremiah

  586. to speak this prophecy

  587. against Jerusalem

  588. then he's done

  589. nothing wrong.

  590. Isn't that often

  591. how we come to

  592. scripture as well?

  593. We're more upset

  594. that it tells us

  595. not to do something

  596. that we want to do

  597. rather than

  598. being concerned

  599. with whether it's

  600. truly the word

  601. of the Lord

  602. that this is

  603. what God

  604. asks of us.

  605. Jeremiah knows this

  606. and so he gets

  607. right to the heart

  608. of the issue

  609. in verses 12 to 13

  610. when he as the defendant

  611. presents his case.

  612. The Lord sent me

  613. to prophesy

  614. against this house

  615. and this city

  616. all the words

  617. you have heard.

  618. Now therefore

  619. mend your ways

  620. and your deeds

  621. and obey the voice

  622. of the Lord your God

  623. and the Lord

  624. will relent

  625. of the disaster

  626. that he has

  627. pronounced against you.

  628. Jeremiah does not

  629. recant anything.

  630. Instead he doubles

  631. down on his prophecy

  632. and declares God's word

  633. once again

  634. even while he's

  635. being tried

  636. for blasphemy

  637. and his very life

  638. is unaligned.

  639. So Jeremiah

  640. faithfully fulfills

  641. his prophetic role

  642. and calls the people

  643. to repentance.

  644. And Jeremiah

  645. was not unaware

  646. of the possible

  647. consequences

  648. of his bold testimony

  649. because look at

  650. verses 14 to 15.

  651. But as for me

  652. behold

  653. I am in your hands

  654. do with me

  655. as seems good

  656. and right to you

  657. only know

  658. for certain

  659. that if you

  660. put me to death

  661. you will bring

  662. innocent blood

  663. upon yourselves

  664. and upon this city

  665. and its inhabitants

  666. for in truth

  667. the Lord

  668. sent me to you

  669. to speak

  670. all these words

  671. in your ears.

  672. The people

  673. at this point

  674. are swayed

  675. by Jeremiah's defense

  676. but we know

  677. that they don't

  678. actually repent later

  679. so probably

  680. they're swayed

  681. by Jeremiah's defense

  682. not because

  683. of their faith

  684. but because

  685. of their fear

  686. of bringing

  687. innocent blood

  688. upon themselves.

  689. But regardless

  690. they support

  691. the official's verdict

  692. in verse 16.

  693. This man does not

  694. deserve the sentence

  695. of death

  696. for he has spoken

  697. to us

  698. in the name

  699. of the Lord

  700. our God.

  701. And after this verdict

  702. is given by the officials

  703. then we hear

  704. the elders

  705. kind of approval

  706. expression of approval

  707. in verses 18 to 19.

  708. Micah of Moresheth

  709. prophesied in the days

  710. of Hezekiah king of Judah

  711. and said to all

  712. the people of Judah

  713. thus says the Lord

  714. of hosts

  715. Zion shall be plowed

  716. as a field

  717. Jerusalem shall become

  718. a heap of ruins

  719. and the mountain

  720. of the house

  721. a wooded height.

  722. Did Hezekiah king of Judah

  723. and all Judah

  724. put him to death?

  725. Did he not fear the Lord

  726. and entreat the favor

  727. of the Lord?

  728. And did not the Lord

  729. relent of the disaster

  730. that he had pronounced

  731. against him?

  732. But we are about

  733. to bring great disaster

  734. upon ourselves.

  735. They are quoting here

  736. from Micah chapter 3

    Micah 3:12

  737. verse 12.

  738. Prophet Micah

  739. like Jeremiah

  740. had prophesied judgment

  741. and doom

  742. against Jerusalem

  743. and at that point

  744. the king and the nation

  745. repented of their evil ways

  746. so that God relented

  747. of his judgment

  748. so should they not

  749. also do the same

  750. is what the elders

  751. are saying

  752. the leaders of

  753. the people.

  754. It's what if Jeremiah

  755. really is speaking

  756. God's word

  757. putting him to death

  758. would bring great disaster

  759. upon ourselves.

  760. But lest we

  761. mistakenly think

  762. that the people

  763. of Judah

  764. and their leaders

  765. were always

  766. this reasonable

  767. and sensible

  768. Jeremiah

  769. adds another incident

  770. when things

  771. didn't turn out

  772. so well

  773. for the prophet

  774. of the Lord

  775. in verses 20

  776. to 23

  777. there was another man

  778. who prophesied

  779. in the name of the Lord

  780. Uriah the son of Shemaiah

  781. from Kiriath-Jerim

  782. he prophesied

  783. against this city

  784. and against this land

  785. in words like

  786. those of Jeremiah

  787. and when King Jehoiakim

  788. he's the present king

  789. at the time of Jeremiah

  790. speaking

  791. with all his warriors

  792. and all the officials

  793. heard his words

  794. the king sought

  795. to put him to death

  796. but when Uriah

  797. heard of it

  798. he was afraid

  799. and fled

  800. and escaped to Egypt

  801. then King Jehoiakim

  802. sent to Egypt

  803. certain men

  804. Elnathan

  805. the son of Akbar

  806. and others with him

  807. and they took Uriah

  808. from Egypt

  809. and brought him

  810. to King Jehoiakim

  811. who struck him

  812. down with the sword

  813. and dumped his dead body

  814. into the burial place

  815. of the common people

  816. this is a contemporary

  817. of his

  818. of Jeremiah's

  819. another prophet

  820. and it happened

  821. under the same king's reign

  822. of Jehoiakim

  823. so even though

  824. Jeremiah went free

  825. this time

  826. it didn't always

  827. happen this way

  828. for the Lord's prophets

  829. because Uriah

  830. who also prophesied

  831. in the same way

  832. Jeremiah did

  833. was put to death

  834. by King Jehoiakim

  835. so the narrator

  836. whether it's Jeremiah

  837. himself

  838. or later scribe

  839. who organized

  840. and put together

  841. his prophecies

  842. thematically

  843. is including

  844. this story here

  845. to make sure

  846. we understand

  847. the mortal danger

  848. that Jeremiah

  849. put himself in

  850. by speaking

  851. the word of the Lord

  852. but Jeremiah

  853. faced a different outcome

  854. why

  855. verse 24

  856. tells us

  857. the hand

  858. of Ahicham

  859. the son of Shaphan

  860. was with Jeremiah

  861. so that he

  862. was not given over

  863. to the people

  864. to be put to death

  865. it's a wonderful

  866. story about this family

  867. because Shaphan

  868. was the secretary

  869. of King Josiah

  870. during his reforms

  871. Josiah was

  872. a pious king

  873. he loved the Lord

  874. wanted to reform

  875. the nation

  876. in true worship

  877. of God

  878. and so Shaphan

  879. was the secretary

  880. to Josiah

  881. as mentioned

  882. in 2 Kings 22

  883. and his family

  884. whole family

  885. and his sons

  886. appear to have been

  887. godly faithful people

  888. because they are seen

  889. over and over again

  890. leveraging their political power

  891. to shield Jeremiah

  892. so for example

  893. later in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 36 chapter mention

  894. chapter 36

  895. another one

  896. of Shaphan's sons

  897. Gemariah

  898. urges Jehoiakim

  899. not to burn

  900. Jeremiah's scroll

  901. he does it anyway

  902. but at least

  903. he tried

  904. right

  905. and in chapter 39

  906. and chapter 40

  907. yet another one

  908. of Shaphan's sons

  909. Gedaliah

  910. takes charge

  911. of Jeremiah

  912. and ensures

  913. his survival

  914. after Jerusalem

  915. has fallen

  916. and here

  917. it's because

  918. of another one

  919. of Shaphan's sons

  920. Ahichem

  921. and his influence

  922. over the official's

  923. decision

  924. that Jeremiah

  925. was not handed

  926. over to the people

  927. to be put to death

  928. it's not such a cool story

  929. I wish

  930. God give us families

  931. like that

  932. earlier in verse 14

  933. remember what Jeremiah

  934. said to the officials

  935. behold

  936. I am in your hands

  937. do with me

  938. as seems good

  939. and right to you

  940. but in truth

  941. Jeremiah was never

  942. given up

  943. to the hands

  944. of the mob

  945. he was always

  946. in God's hands

  947. which is why

  948. the hand of Ahichem

  949. the son of Shaphan

  950. was with Jeremiah

  951. this is a fulfillment

  952. of the promise

  953. that God had made

  954. to Jeremiah

  955. at the very beginning

  956. of his prophetic calling

  957. in chapter 1

  958. verses 18 to 19

  959. God had said to him

  960. and I

  961. behold I

  962. make you this day

  963. a fortified city

  964. in iron pillar

  965. and bronze walls

  966. against the whole land

  967. against the kings of Judah

  968. its officials

  969. its priests

  970. and the people of the land

  971. they will fight against you

  972. but they shall not prevail

  973. against you

  974. for

  975. I am with you

  976. declares the Lord

  977. to deliver

  978. you

  979. the Lord

  980. God was with Jeremiah

  981. to deliver him

  982. his mighty sovereign hand

  983. was protecting

  984. and guiding Jeremiah

  985. so that even though

  986. it appeared to him

  987. as though he was

  988. completely at the mercy

  989. of the mob

  990. at their hands

  991. in reality

  992. he was under the care

  993. of the sovereign God

  994. because Jeremiah

  995. was sent by the Lord

  996. the Lord himself

  997. took charge of his welfare

  998. and nothing will happen

  999. to him outside

  1000. of God's oversight

  1001. the Lord himself

  1002. ensures that his word

  1003. will go forth

  1004. let this truth

1005. be a comfort to you

  1006. even when you feel

  1007. you are

  1008. completely

  1009. at the mercy

  1010. of other people

  1011. in your life

  1012. whether it's your

  1013. professor

  1014. or boss

  1015. or parent

  1016. or spouse

  1017. ultimately

  1018. those who belong

  1019. to God

  1020. are under his

  1021. provident care

  1022. even when you feel

  1023. that the proclamation

  1024. of God's word

  1025. when you share

  1026. the gospel

  1027. with someone

  1028. and that it's

  1029. not going anywhere

  1030. that it's jeopardized

  1031. that it's threatened

  1032. God's word

  1033. will go forth

  1034. and accomplish

  1035. his purposes

  1036. it cannot be thwarted

  1037. and it will never

  1038. return void

  1039. but of course

  1040. that doesn't

  1041. necessarily mean

  1042. that things

  1043. will always turn out

  1044. the way

  1045. we want

  1046. right

  1047. because God's

  1048. will is not

  1049. necessarily identical

  1050. to ours

  1051. as you can see

  1052. in the contrasting

  1053. examples of Uriah

  1054. and Jeremiah

  1055. sometimes prophets

  1056. of the Lord

  1057. were put to death

  1058. other times

  1059. prophets of the Lord

  1060. were preserved

  1061. from harm

  1062. the point

  1063. that Jeremiah

  1064. is driving home

  1065. in this passage

  1066. is that we should

  1067. listen to

  1068. and speak

  1069. the word

  1070. of the Lord

  1071. even to the

  1072. point of death

  1073. Jeremiah preached

  1074. even at the risk

  1075. of his own life

  1076. because he knew

  1077. that speaking

  1078. God's word

  1079. could mean

  1080. the life

  1081. or death

  1082. of the people

  1083. of his nation

  1084. and if he

  1085. didn't warn them

  1086. of God's judgment

  1087. they would not

  1088. repent

  1089. and they would

  1090. surely perish

  1091. and in this sense

  1092. Jeremiah was

  1093. a type

  1094. of the Messiah

  1095. that was to come

  1096. his prophetic role

  1097. pointed to

  1098. and was ultimately

  1099. fulfilled by

  1100. Jesus Christ

  1101. and Hebrews 1

  1102. 1-2 says this

  1103. long ago

  1104. at many times

  1105. and in many ways

1106. God spoke to our fathers

  1107. by the prophets

1108. but in these last days

1109. he has spoken to us

  1110. by his son

  1111. whom he appointed

1112. the heir of all things

  1113. through whom also

  1114. he created

  1115. the world

  1116. Jesus

  1117. the son of God

  1118. is the prophet

  1119. par excellence

1120. he is the ultimate prophet

1121. that all the Old Testament

  1122. prophets were pointing to

  1123. and he faithfully

  1124. speaks

  1125. the words

  1126. of God

  1127. and that's why

  1128. in John 12

  1129. Jesus says to us

  1130. the one

  1131. who rejects me

1132. and does not receive my words

  1133. has a judge

1134. the word that I have spoken

  1135. will judge him

  1136. on the last day

1137. for I have not spoken

  1138. on my own authority

  1139. but the father

  1140. who sent me

  1141. has himself

  1142. given me a commandment

  1143. what to say

  1144. and what to speak

  1145. and I know

  1146. that his commandment

  1147. is eternal life

  1148. what I say

  1149. therefore

  1150. I say

  1151. as the father

  1152. has told me

  1153. Jesus spoke

  1154. what he heard

  1155. from the father

  1156. and he did not

  1157. hold back

  1158. a word

  1159. but Jesus

  1160. is more than

  1161. a prophet

  1162. he doesn't merely

  1163. declare the word

  1164. of God

  1165. he is

  1166. the word

  1167. of God

  1168. as John 1

  1169. describes

  1170. he is the word

  1171. made flesh

  1172. he is more than

  1173. a messenger

  1174. who announces

  1175. the good news

  1176. of salvation

  1177. he is himself

  1178. the embodiment

  1179. of the good news

  1180. of salvation

  1181. because Jeremiah

  1182. was a great prophet

1183. he was a faithful prophet

  1184. and he warned

  1185. the people of Judah

  1186. about God's impending judgment

  1187. but when the people

  1188. refused

  1189. to repent

  1190. there was nothing

  1191. Jeremiah could do

  1192. to save him

  1193. but say

  1194. I warned you

  1195. but Jesus

  1196. he warns

  1197. of God's judgment

  1198. but not only that

  1199. he himself

  1200. even when

  1201. even sinners

  1202. who resist

  1203. God's will

  1204. he makes a way

  1205. for them

  1206. to return

  1207. to the Father

  1208. and be reconciled

  1209. to him

  1210. by dying

  1211. on the cross

  1212. for their

  1213. own sins

  1214. so that he

  1215. can say

  1216. for Jesus

  1217. when people

  1218. sin

  1219. and are all

  1220. yielding

  1221. and stubborn

  1222. in their sins

  1223. his response

  1224. isn't too bad

  1225. I told you already

  1226. he says

  1227. no I made a way

  1228. for you

  1229. follow me

  1230. I died

  1231. for your sins

  1232. trust in me

  1233. and I can save

  1234. you

  1235. that's

  1236. what Jesus

  1237. does

  1238. and this

  1239. is not

  1240. like

  1241. if you

  1242. are not

  1243. yet a

  1244. follower

  1245. of Jesus

  1246. Christ

  1247. I urge you

  1248. this morning

  1249. to give

  1250. your life

  1251. to him

  1252. today

  1253. to the one

  1254. who gave

  1255. his life

  1256. to save

  1257. you

  1258. and this

  1259. is not

  1260. a commitment

  1261. to take

  1262. lightly

  1263. it requires

  1264. aligning

  1265. all of your

  1266. purposes

  1267. and priorities

  1268. with God

  1269. it means

  1270. listening to

  1271. God's word

  1272. and obeying

  1273. it at all

  1274. costs

  1275. it means

  1276. losing your

  1277. life

  1278. in order

  1279. to find

  1280. it

  1281. it means

  1282. no longer

  1283. living for

  1284. yourself

  1285. but living

  1286. wholly for

  1287. God

  1288. but it's

  1289. worth it

  1290. all

  1291. and this

  1292. is an

  1293. important

  1294. reminder

  1295. for those

  1296. of us

  1297. who have

  1298. put

  1299. their faith

  1300. in Jesus

  1301. Christ

  1302. for salvation

  1303. remember

  1304. that this

  1305. is not

  1306. a casual

  1307. commitment

  1308. it's not

  1309. one thing

  1310. on your

  1311. to-do list

  1312. among many

  1313. rather

  1314. it's the

  1315. one thing

  1316. that occupies

  1317. all that

  1318. you do

  1319. Jesus

  1320. said

  1321. if anyone

  1322. would come

  1323. after me

  1324. let him

  1325. deny

  1326. himself

  1327. and take

  1328. up his

  1329. cross

  1330. and follow

  1331. me

  1332. for whoever

  1333. would save

  1334. his life

  1335. will lose

  1336. it

  1337. but whoever

  1338. loses

  1339. his life

  1340. for my

  1341. sake

  1342. and the

  1343. gospels

  1344. will save

  1345. it

  1346. do you

  1347. believe

  1348. in Jesus

  1349. Christ

  1350. enough

  1351. to stake

  1352. your entire

  1353. life

  1354. on it

  1355. to go

  1356. all in

  1357. to forsake

  1358. all

  1359. selfish

  1360. pursuits

  1361. and pursue

  1362. Jesus

  1363. only

  1364. if you try

  1365. to save

  1366. your life

  1367. if you try

  1368. to keep

  1369. some aspects

  1370. of your

  1371. life

  1372. to yourself

  1373. instead of

  1374. giving it

  1375. up to God

  1376. you will

  1377. lose it

  1378. what is

  1379. your life

  1380. about

  1381. is it

  1382. about God

  1383. or is it

  1384. about yourself

  1385. are you

  1386. working

  1387. who are you

  1388. working for

  1389. studying

  1390. for

  1391. living

  1392. for

  1393. and if

  1394. you really

  1395. believe

  1396. the gospel

  1397. of Jesus

  1398. Christ

  1399. that it

  1400. is the

  1401. power

  1402. of God

  1403. unto

  1404. salvation

  1405. then are

  1406. you willing

  1407. to risk

  1408. your life

  1409. to share

  1410. it

  1411. Boston

  1412. is one

  1413. of the

  1414. least

  1415. churched

  1416. and least

  1417. bible minded

  1418. cities

  1419. in the

  1420. US

  1421. there is

  1422. need

  1423. for the

  1424. gospel

  1425. here

  1426. that's

  1427. why we

  1428. started

  1429. this

  1430. church

  1431. here

  1432. but even

  1433. here

  1434. if people

  1435. want

  1436. to learn

  1437. about

  1438. Christ

  1439. they could

  1440. find

  1441. other

  1442. churches

  1443. that

  1444. faithfully

  1445. proclaim

  1446. the gospel

  1447. of Jesus

  1448. Christ

  1449. but there

  1450. are places

  1451. in the

  1452. world

  1453. where people

  1454. have no

  1455. way

  1456. of hearing

  1457. this gospel

  1458. preached

  1459. and some

  1460. of those

  1461. places

  1462. if you

  1463. preach the

  1464. gospel

  1465. and people

  1466. convert

  1467. it could

  1468. be their

  1469. death

  1470. it could

  1471. be your

  1472. death

  1473. are you

  1474. willing

  1475. to risk

  1476. your life

  1477. to tell

  1478. people about

  1479. Jesus

  1480. who need

  1481. to hear

  1482. it

  1483. are you

  1484. willing

  1485. to risk

  1486. your

  1487. reputation

  1488. and embarrass

  1489. yourself

  1490. sharing

  1491. the gospel

  1492. of Jesus

  1493. Christ

  1494. down the

  1495. block

  1496. with a

  1497. neighbor

  1498. or with

  1499. a co-worker

  1500. apart from

  1501. the saving

  1502. message of

  1503. Jesus

  1504. there is

  1505. no salvation

  1506. there's no

  1507. eternal life

  1508. and people

  1509. all around us

  1510. are perishing

  1511. without knowledge

  1512. of it

  1513. our own

  1514. neighbors

  1515. and friends

  1516. and family

  1517. members

  1518. and co-workers

  1519. do you

  1520. share

  1521. this good

  1522. news

  1523. of

  1524. Jesus

  1525. with

  1526. others

  1527. or do

  1528. you

  1529. keep

  1530. it

  1531. to

  1532. yourself

  1533. do

  1534. you

  1535. hold

  1536. back

  1537. the

  1538. word

  1539. maybe a

  1540. third of

  1541. you have

  1542. heard me

  1543. tell this

  1544. story a

  1545. couple

  1546. years

  1547. back

  1548. but

  1549. there's

  1550. one of my

  1551. favorite

  1552. missionary

  1553. stories

  1554. this is

  1555. Robert

  1556. Germain

  1557. Thomas

  1558. who was

  1559. a

  1560. Welsh

  1561. missionary

  1562. in

  1563. China

  1564. he

  1565. had

  1566. a

  1567. burning

  1568. desire

  1569. to

  1570. share

  1571. the

  1572. gospel

  1573. he

  1574. did

  1575. it

  1576. faithfully

  1577. in

  1578. China

  1579. but

  1580. he

  1581. also

  1582. had

  1583. a

  1584. desire

  1585. to

  1586. share

  1587. the

  1588. gospel

  1589. with

  1590. the

  1591. neighboring

  1592. nation

  1593. of

  1594. Korea

  1595. which

  1596. at

  1597. the

  1598. time

  1599. was

  1600. known

  1601. as

  1602. the

  1603. hermit

  1604. nation

  1605. and

  1606. did

  1607. not

  1608. have

  1609. gospel

  1610. witness

  1611. so he

  1612. started

  1613. studying

  1614. Korean

  1615. on his

  1616. own

  1617. in

  1618. 1866

  1619. Thomas

  1620. learned

  1621. that

  1622. an

  1623. American

  1624. boat

  1625. the

  1626. German

  1627. Sherman

  1628. the

  1629. General

  1630. Sherman

  1631. was

  1632. going

  1633. to

  1634. try

  1635. to

  1636. establish

  1637. trade

  1638. relations

  1639. with

  1640. Korea

  1641. and

  1642. the

  1643. U.S.

  1644. and

  1645. so he

  1646. offered

  1647. to

  1648. accompany

  1649. the

  1650. boat

  1651. as

  1652. an

  1653. interpreter

  1654. in

  1655. exchange

  1656. for

  1657. a

  1658. chance

  1659. to

  1660. spread

  1661. the

  1662. gospel

  1663. and

  1664. as

  1665. the

  1666. ship

  1667. approached

  1668. the

  1669. coast

  1670. of

  1671. Korea

  1672. Robert

  1673. tossed

  1674. gospel

  1675. tracks

  1676. onto

  1677. the

  1678. river

  1679. bank

  1680. but

  1681. Korea

  1682. having

  1683. observed

  1684. how

  1685. some

  1686. westerners

  1687. had

  1688. mistreated

  1689. China

  1690. they were

  1691. leery of

  1692. foreigners

  1693. and so

  1694. when they

  1695. saw

  1696. this

  1697. ship

  1698. the

  1699. Korean

  1700. officials

  1701. ordered

  1702. the

  1703. American

  1704. boat

  1705. to

  1706. leave

  1707. whether

  1708. it's

  1709. through

  1710. miscommunication

  1711. or

  1712. just

  1713. stubbornness

  1714. they

  1715. didn't

  1716. leave

  1717. they defied

  1718. the

  1719. warning

  1720. and

  1721. consequently

  1722. they

  1723. were

  1724. attacked

  1725. by the

  1726. Koreans

  1727. killed

  1728. them

  1729. but

  1730. true

  1731. to

  1732. his

  1733. mission

  1734. and

  1735. counting

  1736. even

  1737. his

  1738. survival

  1739. as

  1740. secondary

  1741. to

  1742. sharing

  1743. the

  1744. gospel

  1745. Robert

  1746. Jermaine

  1747. Thomas

  1748. instead

  1749. of

  1750. running

  1751. away

  1752. left

  1753. from

  1754. the

  1755. boat

  1756. carrying

  1757. Bibles

  1758. in his

  1759. hands

  1760. and

  1761. yelling

  1762. Jesus

  1763. Jesus

  1764. as

  1765. he

  1766. was

  1767. throwing

  1768. Chinese

  1769. Bibles

  1770. to

  1771. these

  1772. Korean

  1773. people

  1774. because

  1775. a lot

  1776. of

  1777. the

  1778. Koreans

  1779. spoke

  1780. Chinese

  1781. at

  1782. the

  1783. time

  1784. and

  1785. there

  1786. were

  1787. no

  1788. Korean

  1789. translations

  1790. of

  1791. the

  1792. Bible

  1793. but

  1794. sadly

  1795. he

  1796. was

  1797. promptly

  1798. beheaded

  1799. with

  1800. a

  1801. machete

  1802. that's

  1803. all

  1804. he

  1805. got

  1806. to

  1807. do

  1808. yell

  1809. Jesus

  1810. Jesus

  1811. throw

  1812. some

  1813. Bibles

  1814. down

  1815. but

  1816. God

  1817. worked

  1818. in the

  1819. heart

  1820. of the

  1821. man

  1822. who

  1823. killed

  1824. Robert

  1825. Jermaine

  1826. Thomas

  1827. convinced

  1828. by

  1829. Robert's

  1830. beaming

  1831. face

  1832. at the

  1833. time

  1834. of

  1835. his

  1836. death

  1837. he

  1838. kept

  1839. one

  1840. of

  1841. the

  1842. Bibles

  1843. that

  1844. he

  1845. had

  1846. thrown

  1847. and

  1848. then

  1849. he

  1850. ripped

  1851. it

  1852. apart

  1853. to

  1854. use

  1855. it

  1856. as

  1857. wallpaper

  1858. and

  1859. God's

  1860. unstoppable

  1861. word

  1862. began

  1863. to

  1864. do

  1865. its

  1866. work

  1867. people

  1868. came

  1869. from

  1870. far

  1871. and

  1872. near

  1873. to

  1874. read

  1875. its

  1876. words

  1877. a

  1878. church

  1879. grew

  1880. and

  1881. Robert's

  1882. nephew

  1883. the

  1884. killer

  1885. the

  1886. Robert's

  1887. killer's

  1888. nephew

  1889. became

  1890. the

  1891. pastor

  1892. of

  1893. the

  1894. church

  1895. and

  1896. today

  1897. 150

  1898. years

  1899. later

  1900. 30%

  1901. of

  1902. South

  1910. whoever

  1911. loses

  1912. his

  1913. life

  1914. for

  1915. Christ's

  1916. sake

  1917. and

  1918. the

  1919. gospel

  1920. sake

  1921. will

  1922. save

  1923. it

  1924. let's

  1925. be

  1926. a

  1927. church

  1928. that

  1929. listens

  1930. to

  1931. and

  1932. speaks

  1933. the

  1934. word

  1935. of

  1936. the

  1937. Lord

  1938. even

  1939. to

  1940. the

  1941. point

  1942. of

  1943. death

  1944. close

  1945. your

  1947. with

  1949. reflect

  1951. this

  1952. message

  1953. this

  1954. passage

  1955. for

  1956. a few

  1957. moments

  1958. and

  1959. we

  1960. will

  1961. pray

  1962. together

  1963. as a

  1964. church

  1965. corporately

  1966. in

  1967. response
