  1. It's great to see you all talking and getting to know each other.

  2. Today, the passage is Jeremiah chapter 40, verse 1 through chapter 43, verse 7.

    Jeremiah 40:1

  3. Because it's a long passage, I'll be referencing it as I preach.

  4. And in the beginning, I'm only going to read the first 12 verses of chapter 40.

  5. Before I do that, let me pray and seek God's help.

  6. Heavenly Father, we are here gathered in your presence as people who are indwelled by your spirit.

  7. Seeking to grow in our knowledge of your voice.

  8. In our ability to hear it.

  9. And in our faith and commitment to follow it.

  10. We ask that as we hear from you, from this passage of scripture.

  11. That you speak to us.

  12. That your spirit would open the eyes of our hearts.

  13. That we might see your truth, believe it and live in accordance with it.

  14. In Jesus' name we pray.

  15. Amen.

  16. So let me read Jeremiah 40, verses 1 to 12 to begin.

    Jeremiah 40:1–12

  17. The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuchadnezzar, the captain of the guard, had let him go from Ramah.

  18. When he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.

  19. The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him,

  20. The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place.

  21. The Lord has brought it about and has done as he said.

  22. Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you.

  23. Now behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands.

  24. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well.

  25. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come.

  26. See, the whole land is before you.

  27. Go wherever you think it good and right to go.

  28. If you remain, then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahicham, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah.

  29. And dwell with him among the people.

  30. Or go wherever you think it right to go.

  31. So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present and let him go.

  32. Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahicham at Mizpah and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

  33. When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahicham, governor in the land,

  34. and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon,

  35. they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah,

  36. and Jeremiah, Johanan the son of Kariah,

  37. Sariah the son of Tanhumeth,

  38. the sons of Ephai the Netophathite,

  39. Jezaniah the son of Mekathite,

  40. they and their men.

  41. Gedaliah the son of Ahicham, son of Shaphan,

  42. swore to them and their men, saying,

  43. Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans.

  44. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon,

  45. and he shall be well with you.

  46. As for me,

  47. I will dwell at Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us.

  48. But as for you,

  49. gather wine and summer fruits and oil,

  50. and store them in your vessels,

  51. and dwell in your cities that you have taken.

  52. Likewise,

  53. when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites,

  54. and in Edom and in other lands,

  55. heard that the king of Babylon had left the remnant in Judah,

  56. and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahicham,

  57. son of Shaphan,

  58. as governor over them,

  59. then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven,

  60. and came to the land of Judah,

  61. to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

  62. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.

  63. This is the word of the Lord.

  64. Our depth of disappointment

  65. is often directly proportional to our expectations,

  66. how high our expectations were.

  67. When we fully expect something to come through for us,

  68. but it doesn't,

  69. we become disappointed.

  70. When we expect a certain favorable response from somebody,

  71. but when we talk to them,

  72. we get a different response,

  73. we become disappointed.

  74. When we are decidedly set on a course of action,

  75. but our course gets derailed,

  76. and we don't get our way,

  77. we get disappointed, right?

  78. With God, though,

  79. God is not a person that we can manipulate

  80. according to our own whims and wishes.

  81. He is the sovereign king

  82. who executes his own will,

  83. and exerts his power over our lives,

  84. and over the entire universe.

  85. So, and as his subjects,

  86. then,

  87. whether it is agreeable to us or not,

  88. we must obey the voice of the Lord,

  89. and that's for our good.

  90. But when God contradicts our desires,

  91. alters our plans,

  92. or upsets our expectations,

  93. we can be disappointed,

  94. even sullen and angry with God,

  95. or we could resort to denial.

  96. And this is exactly what happens

  97. to the people of Judah

  98. after the Babylonian conquest

  99. and the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple.

  100. And we see two characteristic responses

  101. of sinful human beings when that happens.

  102. And first, in chapter 40 and 41,

  103. we see their defiance,

  104. and in chapters 42 and 43,

  105. we see their denial.

  106. And the main point of this sermon,

  107. really, and this passage,

  108. is that whether it is agreeable to us or not,

  109. we must obey the voice of the Lord for our good.

  110. The people of Judah were complacent and secure

  111. because they had Jerusalem as their city,

  112. the capital city,

  113. chosen,

  114. and King David and his descendants

  115. reigning over them.

  116. And because they said among themselves,

  117. their attitude was that God promised

  118. to have the descendants of David

  119. rule over this kingdom forever.

  120. And he did, 2 Samuel 7.

  121. And God lives here with us

  122. because this is where the temple of the Lord is.

  123. What can then possibly happen to this place?

  124. Who can do us harm

  125. when God is with us?

  126. And that kind of assurance,

  127. false assurance, really,

  128. made them commit idolatry

  129. in the complacency.

  130. They did not pursue the Lord wholeheartedly,

  131. and they became deaf

  132. to the repeated warnings of Prophet Jeremiah

  133. about God's impending judgment.

  134. And because of that,

  135. you can imagine their deep confusion,

  136. disillusionment, and despair

  137. when the city of Jerusalem was destroyed

  138. and the temple was burned to the ground.

  139. And chapter 40 tells us

  140. what happened after that,

  141. in particular to Prophet Jeremiah.

  142. So we already saw

  143. at the end of chapter 39,

  144. verses 11 to 14,

  145. it kind of gave us a high-level summary

  146. of what happened to Jeremiah.

  147. So Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,

  148. ordered Nebuchadnezzar,

  149. the captain of the guard,

  150. to deal well with Jeremiah.

  151. He ordered him to do that

  152. and to have him free to stay

  153. in Judah under the care of Gedaliah,

  154. the son of Ahicham,

  155. the son of Shaphan.

  156. And now chapter 40,

  157. verses 1 to 6,

  158. kind of gives us the low-level details

  159. about how Nebuchadnezzar

  160. executed this command.

  161. So look at verse 1 with me.

  162. It says,

  163. The word that came to Jeremiah

  164. from the Lord

  165. after Nebuchadnezzar,

  166. the captain of the guard,

  167. had let him go from Ramah

  168. when he took him bound in chains

  169. along with all the captives

  170. of Jerusalem and Judah

  171. who were being exiled to Babylon.

  172. So it appears that Jeremiah

  173. wasn't released immediately

  174. after Nebuchadnezzar told Nebuchadnezzar

  175. to treat him well.

  176. Instead, he was taken in chains

  177. to transport along with the rest

  178. of the captives of Judah

  179. to Ramah,

  180. where the official kind of Babylonian tribunal

  181. was deciding the fate

  182. of all the Judean captives.

  183. And why Nebuchadnezzar,

  184. the captain of the guard,

  185. did this becomes apparent

  186. in verses 2 to 6.

  187. Read with me.

  188. The captain of the guard

  189. took Jeremiah and said to him,

  190. The Lord your God

  191. pronounced this disaster

  192. against this place.

  193. And the Lord has brought it about

  194. and has done as he said,

  195. because you sinned against the Lord

  196. and did not obey his voice.

  197. This thing has come upon you.

  198. Now behold,

  199. I release you today

  200. from the chains on your hands.

  201. If it seems good to you

  202. to come with me to Babylon,

  203. come,

  204. and I will look after you well.

  205. But if it seems wrong to you

  206. to come with me to Babylon,

  207. do not come.

  208. See, the whole land is before you.

  209. Go wherever you think

  210. it's good and right to go.

  211. If you remain,

  212. then return to Getolah,

  213. the son of Ike,

  214. and the son of Shaphan,

  215. whom the king of Babylon

  216. appointed governor

  217. of the cities of Judah,

  218. and dwell with him

  219. among the people.

  220. Or go wherever you think

  221. it right to go.

  222. So the captain of the guard

  223. gave him an allowance of food

  224. and a present

  225. and let him go.

  226. Now,

  227. it's a little bit unfortunate

  228. that the English

  229. second person pronoun,

  230. you,

  231. doesn't distinguish

  232. the singular from the plural.

  233. So it's just you.

  234. It could be or you all.

  235. But it's making

  236. an important point here

  237. because in the Hebrew,

  238. when in verse 2,

  239. Nebuchadnezzar then says,

  240. the Lord,

  241. your God,

  242. pronounced this disaster

  243. against this place.

  244. The second person pronoun,

  245. your,

  246. is singular.

  247. So the Babylonian

  248. captain of the guard

  249. is referring to the Lord

  250. as Jeremiah's God,

  251. your God.

  252. But then in verse 3,

  253. when he says,

  254. because you sinned

  255. against the Lord

  256. and did not obey his voice,

  257. this thing has come upon you.

  258. The you there

  259. is in the second person plural.

  260. It's not,

  261. he's not speaking there

  262. to Jeremiah,

  263. but he's speaking to

  264. all the Judean captives

  265. that are there

  266. watching this public trial.

  267. So this is a public trial,

  268. Jeremiah,

  269. that Nebuchadnezzar

  270. intended

  271. as a public rebuke

  272. to the Judeans

  273. who refused to surrender

  274. to the Babylonians

  275. in spite of repeated

  276. urgings of Jeremiah.

  277. So Nebuchadnezzar

  278. then associates

  279. God with Jeremiah.

  280. He's your God,

  281. but he associates

  282. the sin and the disobedience

  283. that brought this judgment

  284. to all the Judeans,

  285. you all.

  286. And that's a frightful thing,

  287. right?

  288. There are some people here

  289. for whom the Lord

  290. is not your God,

  291. but his God

  292. or her God,

  293. their God,

  294. but he's not your God.

  295. And that is a big problem.

  296. Do you have a relationship

  297. with God

  298. so that you can say of him,

  299. the Lord,

  300. my God?

  301. Have you aligned yourself

  302. with God's purposes?

  303. Or are you living for yourself

  304. in rebellion

  305. and disobedience?

  306. If that's the case,

  307. I urge you this morning

  308. to not leave this place

  309. until you know clearly

  310. where you stand

  311. in relation to God

  312. and say in faith

  313. that the Lord is your God.

  314. So in short,

  315. Nebuchadnezzar

  316. then the pagan military commander

  317. is bringing a stinging rebuke

  318. to the people of Judah.

  319. Your own prophet

  320. spoke the word of God

  321. whom you were supposed

  322. to worship,

  323. but you did not listen.

  324. That's why this disaster

  325. has come upon you.

  326. And here's what will happen

  327. to the friends of Babylon.

  328. Jeremiah,

  329. you're free to go

  330. wherever you want.

  331. You can go with us

  332. to Babylon

  333. where I will take good care

  334. of you,

  335. or you can remain here

  336. under the care of Gedaliah

  337. whom we have appointed governor.

  338. In fact,

  339. here's some food

  340. that you can take with you,

  341. even a present.

  342. It's a public try

  343. intended to rebuke the Judeans.

  344. He's making a public example

  345. of Jeremiah

  346. to advance their political agenda.

  347. And of course,

  348. it's not exactly true

  349. that Jeremiah

  350. is a friend of Babylon

  351. because he was warning Judah

  352. for their own sake

  353. so that they might follow the Lord

  354. and repent of their sins.

  355. But nevertheless,

  356. what he was urging them to do

  357. to surrender to Babylon

  358. was a message

  359. that the Babylonians approved.

  360. And so they considered him

  361. a friend of Babylon.

  362. But even though

  363. he's invited to Babylon,

  364. Jeremiah's heart remains

  365. with the people of God.

  366. He does not see it fit

  367. to go to Babylon.

  368. So he stays in Judah

  369. under the care of Gedaliah

  370. the son of Ike,

  371. son of Shaphan.

  372. Now,

  373. we keep reading that,

  374. right?

  375. It's a mouthful to read.

  376. Gedaliah the son of Ike,

  377. son of Shaphan.

  378. But does that ring a bell

  379. at all

  380. as we've gone through

  381. this book of Jeremiah?

  382. Because Gedaliah's genealogy

  383. is given here

  384. because it's significant.

  385. He's the grandson of Shaphan

  386. who, as you might recall,

  387. is the head of the noble family

  388. who are frequently found

  389. throughout the book of Jeremiah,

  390. sheltering the prophet

  391. and protecting him

  392. using their political leverage.

  393. Shaphan was the secretary

  394. of King Josiah

  395. during his reforms.

  396. And his family

  397. appears to have been

  398. a godly, faithful people

  399. who did their best

  400. to shield Jeremiah.

  401. So, for example,

  402. in Jeremiah 26, 24,

  403. it said,

  404. The hand of Ike,

  405. the son of Shaphan,

  406. was with Jeremiah

  407. so that he was not

  408. given over to the people

  409. to be put to death.

  410. And in Jeremiah 36, 10 and 26,

  411. another one of Shaphan's sons,

  412. Gemariah,

  413. urges King Jehoiakim

  414. not to burn Jeremiah's scroll.

  415. And here in chapter 40,

  416. Shaphan's grandson

  417. and Ike's son, Gedaliah,

  418. takes charge of Jeremiah

  419. and ensures his survival

  420. after the fall of Jerusalem.

  421. Isn't this a great example

  422. of God's providence

  423. in our lives?

  424. Nebuchadnezzar could have chosen

  425. from dozens of royal heirs

  426. and nobility,

  427. but of them all,

  428. he chooses Gedaliah,

  429. the grandson of Shaphan.

  430. What luck, you might say,

  431. for Jeremiah,

  432. but this is not luck.

  433. It's the providence of God.

  434. Even in the small detail,

  435. scripture reveals

  436. God's gracious and provident

  437. care for his servants.

  438. Do you know that this is how

  439. God cares for all of his children?

  440. Even in the tumult of war

  441. and captivity,

  442. the Lord, your God,

  443. is sovereign.

  444. There's no corner of the earth

  445. where his power does not reach,

  446. and there's no event in history,

  447. no detail in your own life

  448. that does not follow

  449. the course of God's will.

  450. God cares for us.

  451. He's watching over us.

  452. And under Gedaliah's governorship,

  453. the remnant of Judah

  454. begins to come together again.

  455. Verses 7 to 8,

  456. read with me.

  457. It says,

  458. When all the captains

  459. of the forces

  460. in the open country

  461. and their men

  462. heard that the king of Babylon

  463. had appointed Gedaliah,

  464. the son of Aikim,

  465. governor in the land,

  466. and had committed to him

  467. men, women, and children,

  468. those of the poorest of the land

  469. who had not been taken

  470. into exile to Babylon,

  471. they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

  472. Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah,

  473. Johanan, the son of Kariah,

  474. Sariah, the son of Tamimuth,

  475. the sons of Ephi, the Netaphathite,

  476. Jezaniah, the son of Macathite,

  477. they and their men.

  478. Now the captains

  479. of the Judean army

  480. and the people

  481. under their supervision

  482. had, some of them

  483. had managed to escape

  484. the Babylonian army.

  485. And when they hear

  486. of Gedaliah's appointment,

  487. they all rally back

  488. to him in Mizpah.

  489. And in verses 9 to 10,

  490. Gedaliah assures them

  491. that he will represent them

  492. faithfully to the Babylonians.

  493. And he assures them

  494. that they will be safe

  495. if they continue

  496. to resume their life,

  497. resume their farming

  498. to restore some normalcy

  499. to their life

  500. after becoming conquered

  501. by Babylon.

  502. And not only the Judeans

  503. that were scattered

  504. throughout Judah,

  505. but also those refugees

  506. from Moab and Edom,

  507. they come back

  508. to gather under

  509. Gedaliah's leadership.

  510. And he says,

  511. in verse 12,

  512. that they gathered

  513. wine and summer fruits

  514. in great abundance.

  515. So the people

  516. are resuming their life

  517. and even though

  518. the war was devastating,

  519. the conditions now

  520. seem to be improving.

  521. They're doing better.

  522. And Gedaliah seems

  523. to be unifying the people.

  524. But there's a plot twist here

  525. at the end of verse 8.

  526. Some of the captains

  527. of the forces

  528. that had joined Gedaliah

  529. were named

  530. at the end of verse 8

  531. because they are

  532. the main characters

  533. in this plot twist

  534. which now unfolds

  535. in verses 13 to 15.

  536. Read with me.

  537. Now Johanan,

  538. the son of Kareah,

  539. and all the leaders

  540. of the forces

  541. in the open country

  542. came to Gedaliah

  543. at Mizpah and said to him,

  544. Do you know

  545. that Baalus,

  546. the king of the Ammonites,

  547. has sent Ishmael,

  548. the son of Nethaniah,

  549. to take your life?

  550. But Gedaliah,

  551. the son of Ahikim,

  552. would not believe them.

  553. Then Johanan,

  554. the son of Kareah,

  555. spoke secretly

  556. to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

  557. Please,

  558. let me go

  559. and strike down Ishmael,

  560. the son of Nethaniah,

  561. and no one will know it.

  562. Why should he take your life

  563. so that all the Judeans

  564. who are gathered about you

  565. would be scattered

  566. and the remnant of Judah

  567. would perish?

  568. So one of the military commanders,

  569. Johanan,

  570. son of Kareah,

  571. informs Gedaliah

  572. of Ishmael's conspiracy

  573. and he offers

  574. a preemptive strike

  575. to get rid of this

  576. would-be assassin.

  577. And Johanan seems

  578. to understand

  579. the importance

  580. of Gedaliah

  581. as a unifying figure

  582. because he was

  583. an effective leader

  584. that was bringing back

  585. the people of Judah.

  586. And if he were assassinated,

  587. the remnant

  588. would be scattered again

  589. and they would be

  590. at risk of perishing

  591. altogether.

  592. But Gedaliah

  593. doesn't believe Ahikim

  594. and he said

  595. to Johanan,

  596. son of Kareah,

  597. you shall not do this thing

  598. for you are speaking

  599. falsely of Ishmael.

  600. Gedaliah does not believe

  601. Johanan,

  602. and instead believes

  603. better of Ishmael.

  604. We don't get

  605. too many details

  606. here on their motivations

  607. and why,

  608. but we may have

  609. some clues

  610. in the next chapter.

  611. So turn with me

  612. to chapter 41,

  613. verse 1.

  614. It says,

  615. In the seventh month,

  616. Ishmael,

  617. the son of Nethaniah,

  618. son of Elishamah,

  619. of the royal family,

  620. one of the chief officers

  621. of the king,

  622. came with ten men

  623. to Gedaliah,

  624. the son of Ahikim,

  625. at Mizpah.

  626. So we learn here

  627. that Ishmael came

  628. from a very prominent

  629. Judean family.

  630. His grandfather

  631. was one of the chief officers

  632. of the king.

  633. In fact,

  634. he was of royal blood.

  635. So for these reasons,

  636. Ishmael may have felt

  637. that he had better claimed

  638. to be ruler of Judah

  639. than Gedaliah

  640. and may have resented

  641. the fact that Gedaliah

  642. was appointed

  643. by the foreign intruders.

  644. We can't know for sure,

  645. but it's a possibility.

  646. But Gedaliah,

  647. on the other hand,

  648. is very trusting of Ishmael.

  649. Why could that be?

  650. Elishamah,

  651. Ishmael's grandfather

  652. that's named here,

  653. was the secretary

  654. of King Joachim of Judah

  655. who served with Gemariah,

  656. the son of Shaphan.

  657. So Ishmael's grandfather

  658. was a close colleague

  659. of Gedaliah's uncle

  660. and they may have already

  661. had prior relationship

  662. because of that connection

  663. and perhaps that familiarity

  664. predisposed Gedaliah

  665. to trust Ishmael

  666. and accuse Johanan

  667. of speaking falsely

  668. of Ishmael.

  669. And since Johanan and Ishmael

  670. were kind of both captains

  671. of the forces,

  672. rival leaders

  673. jockeying for more influence

  674. within this new Judean coalition,

  675. Gedaliah may have suspected

  676. Johanan of simply wanting

  677. to eliminate a rival.

  678. But Ishmael betrays

  679. Gedaliah's trust

  680. and it says in verses 2-3,

  681. as they ate bread together

  682. there at Mizpah,

  683. Ishmael,

  684. the son of Nethaniah

  685. and the ten men with him

  686. rose up and struck down

  687. Gedaliah,

  688. the son of Aikim,

  689. son of Shaphan,

  690. with the sword

  691. and killed him

  692. whom the king of Babylon

  693. had appointed governor

  694. in the land.

  695. Ishmael also struck down

  696. all the Judeans

  697. who were with Gedaliah

  698. at Mizpah

  699. and the Chaldean soldiers

  700. who happened to be there.

  701. The stories written

  702. in scripture

  703. don't give us

  704. unnecessary details

  705. and everything written here

  706. is there to tell us something

  707. because it says

  708. that the assassination

  709. took place

  710. as they ate bread together.

  711. That highlights

  712. how shameful

  713. and a hateful act this was

  714. because in the ancient Near East

  715. hospitality was taken

  716. extremely seriously

  717. and the mutual trust

  718. and obligation

  719. between the host

  720. and guest

  721. was a sacred bond.

  722. But Ishmael

  723. betrays him

  724. while Gedaliah

  725. was providing for him

  726. with his own food

  727. and protecting him

  728. under his own roof.

  729. Gedaliah,

  730. Ishmael rises up

  731. to strike Gedaliah

  732. and down with the sword.

  733. And sin always

  734. begets more sin

  735. and his murder here

  736. leads to a string of others

  737. because he kills

  738. all the Judeans

  739. that were with Gedaliah

  740. at Mizpah

  741. and all the Babylonian soldiers

  742. who happened to be there.

  743. Presumably because he wanted

  744. to eliminate all witnesses

  745. so that the word doesn't get out

  746. to the Babylonian empire

  747. that he has done this.

  748. And that's a big problem, right?

  749. Because the narrator

  750. reminds us that

  751. Ishmael killed Gedaliah

  752. who was

  753. whom the king of Babylon

  754. had appointed

  755. governor in the land.

  756. So not only is this

  757. a gross violation

  758. of that ancient Near Eastern trust

  759. and the laws of hospitality,

  760. this was treachery

  761. and rebellion

  762. against the Babylonian rule

  763. which was sure to bring

  764. swift reprisal

  765. from the Babylonians.

  766. But Ishmael's crime

  767. doesn't end there.

  768. Verses 4-5 tells us

  769. that on the day

  770. after the murder

  771. of Gedaliah,

  772. before anyone knew of it,

  773. 80 men arrived

  774. from Shechem and Shiloh

  775. and Samaria

  776. with their beard shaped

  777. and their clothes torn

  778. and their bodies gashed,

  779. bringing grain offerings

  780. and incense

  781. to present at the temple

  782. of the Lord.

  783. So Shechem, Shiloh,

  784. and Samaria

  785. are all kind of centers

  786. of worship

  787. in northern Israel.

  788. Israel,

  789. and that their origin

  790. as well as the fact

  791. that they brought

  792. grain offerings

  793. and incense

  794. to present the temple

  795. of the Lord,

  796. tell us that they're

  797. worshipers of the true God.

  798. They're pilgrims

  799. and they've come to worship

  800. and they have come mourning

  801. because it says

  802. that their beards are shaven,

  803. their clothes are torn,

  804. their bodies are gashed.

  805. They're mourning

  806. the destruction of the temple

  807. for the fall of Jerusalem

  808. and they're coming

  809. to pledge their ongoing allegiance

  810. and faithfulness to God.

  811. And when you get

  812. these innocent guests coming,

  813. Ishmael acts like

  814. a complete snake.

  815. Read verses 6 to 8 with me.

  816. And Ishmael,

  817. the son of Nethaniah,

  818. came out from Mizpah

  819. to meet them,

  820. weeping as he came.

  821. As he met them,

  822. he said to them,

  823. come in to Gedaliah,

  824. the son of Ahicham.

  825. Ishmael greets them

  826. in Gedaliah's name,

  827. probably because these pilgrims

  828. had come to see Gedaliah,

  829. which shows that Gedaliah,

  830. like his father and grandfather

  831. before him,

  832. was a worshiper of the true God

  833. and they saw him,

  834. for that reason,

  835. as a safe figure.

  836. So Gedaliah,

  837. so he uses,

  838. invokes Gedaliah's name

  839. and earns their trust

  840. by faking his mourning.

  841. But when they came

  842. into the city,

  843. it says,

  844. Ishmael,

  845. the son of Nethaniah

  846. and the men with him,

  847. slaughtered them

  848. and cast them into a cistern.

  849. But there were ten men

  850. among them

  851. who said to Ishmael,

  852. do not put us to death

  853. for we have stores

  854. of wheat, barley, oil

  855. and honey hidden in the fields.

  856. So he refrained

  857. and did not put them to death

  858. with their companions.

  859. He spares only ten of them,

  860. not because he has mercy on them,

  861. but because of his greed.

  862. He wants to acquire

  863. their hidden wheat,

  864. barley, oil and honey.

  865. And then it tells us

  866. in verse 10,

  867. Ishmael took captive

  868. all the rest of the people

  869. who were in Mizpah,

  870. the king's daughters

  871. and all the people

  872. who were left in Mizpah,

  873. whom Nebuchadnezzar,

  874. the captain of the guard,

  875. had committed to Gedaliah,

  876. the son of Ahicham.

  877. Ishmael,

  878. the son of Nethaniah,

  879. took them captive

  880. and set out to cross over

  881. to the Ammonites.

  882. So Nebuchadnezzar

  883. then had entrusted

  884. certain prominent people

  885. to Gedaliah,

  886. including the king's daughters

  887. and as we saw

  888. in chapter 40,

  889. Jeremiah.

  890. But now those people

  891. whom Nebuchadnezzar

  892. had freed,

  893. Ishmael takes captive again

  894. and likely fearing

  895. the Babylonian retaliation,

  896. he begins to flee again

  897. to the territory

  898. of the Ammonites.

  899. Ishmael is a classic example

  900. of human defiance

  901. against God.

  902. As a proud citizen of Judah,

  903. Ishmael resisted

  904. the Babylonian rule

  905. over Judah,

  906. even though God

  907. had clearly revealed

  908. through his prophet

  909. that the Babylonian invasion

  910. was his judgment,

  911. which they ought

  912. to submit to.

  913. As a proud descendant

  914. of royalty,

  915. Ishmael resisted

  916. Gedaliah's governorship

  917. of Judah,

  918. even though he was

  919. a godly and clearly

  920. effective and unifying leader.

  921. This is how we often respond

  922. to God's will

  923. in our lives too,

  924. isn't it?

  925. We might not murder

  926. anyone in retaliation,

  927. but we nonetheless

  928. get angry with God

  929. and with others.

  930. We defy God

  931. by resisting his will

  932. and disobeying his commands.

  933. We think we deserve

  934. better than what God

  935. has given us.

  936. When we don't get

  937. the job or promotion

  938. that we thought

  939. we deserved.

  940. When we don't get

  941. into the school

  942. or the program

  943. that we thought

  944. we deserved.

  945. When we don't get

  946. the good night of sleep

  947. that we thought

  948. we deserved

  949. because of a crying baby.

  950. When we don't get

  951. the quiet morning

  952. with a cup of coffee

  953. and the Bible in hand.

  954. when we don't get

  955. a quiet evening

  956. to relax

  957. after a long day

  958. at work

  959. with a good book

  960. or a good show

  961. that we thought

  962. we deserved.

  963. In short,

  964. when we disapprove

  965. of the twists

  966. and turns of life,

  967. the dips and bumps

  968. of our lives,

  969. we get sullen

  970. and angry.

  971. We take our anger

  972. out on other people,

  973. on other things,

  974. but really we're angry

  975. at God

  976. who in his sovereign

  977. will fit

  978. fit to send these

  979. our way.

  980. How we handle

  981. suffering

  982. and other undesirable

  983. circumstances

  984. of our lives,

  985. whether with humble

  986. submission

  987. or with prideful

  988. defiance,

  989. reveals our true character.

  990. Whether it is

  991. agreeable to us

  992. or not,

  993. we must obey

  994. the voice of the Lord

  995. and that's for our good.

  996. Now look at what

  997. happens to Ishmael.

  998. Verses 11 to 12.

  999. But when Johanan,

  1000. the son of Cariah,

  1001. and all the leaders

1002. of the forces with him

1003. heard of all the evil

  1004. that Ishmael,

  1005. the son of Nethaniah,

  1006. had done,

1007. they took all their men

  1008. and went to fight

  1009. against Ishmael,

  1010. the son of Nethaniah.

  1011. When Johanan

  1012. and his soldiers

  1013. intercept Ishmael

  1014. in Gibeon,

  1015. verses 13 to 14

  1016. tell us that all

  1017. the people that

  1018. had been taken

  1019. captive by Ishmael

  1020. rejoiced to see

  1021. this,

  1022. I guess,

  1023. their savior

  1024. in Johanan

  1025. and they defected

  1026. to him

  1027. so that Ishmael,

  1028. instead of

  1029. returning to the

  1030. Ammonites triumphantly

  1031. with his spoils

  1032. and captives,

  1033. barely managed

  1034. to escape

  1035. with only

  1036. eight men

  1037. running for their lives.

  1038. And Johanan

  1039. then recovers

  1040. all the people

  1041. that Ishmael

  1042. had taken captive

  1043. and brings them,

  1044. it says,

  1045. to Gareth-Chimhem

  1046. near Bethlehem.

  1047. And it says

  1048. in verses 17 to 18

  1049. that they were

  1050. intending to go

  1051. to Egypt

  1052. because of

  1053. the Chaldeans.

  1054. For they were

  1055. afraid of them

  1056. because Ishmael,

  1057. the son of Nethaniah,

  1058. had struck down

  1059. Gedali,

  1060. the son of Ikem,

  1061. whom the king

  1062. of Babylon

  1063. had made governor

  1064. over the land.

  1065. Even though

  1066. they themselves

  1067. had not killed

  1068. Gedaliah

  1069. and rebelled

  1070. against Babylon,

  1071. it looked like

  1072. they had

  1073. because of

  1074. what Ishmael

  1075. had done.

  1076. So instead of

  1077. waiting in Judah

  1078. to find out

  1079. what the Babylonians

  1080. would do to them,

  1081. they figured

  1082. they'd be better off

  1083. fleeing to Egypt.

  1084. And we can deduce

  1085. that they were

  1086. already set

  1087. on going to Egypt

  1088. by where they went

  1089. because Bethlehem,

  1090. where they went,

  1091. is six miles

  1092. southwest of Jerusalem,

  1093. well on their way

  1094. to Egypt already.

  1095. And that brings us

  1096. to chapter 42

  1097. and my second point,

  1098. denial,

  1099. which is another way

  1100. that sinful human beings

  1101. typically respond

  1102. when God's will

  1103. is not agreeable

  1104. to them.

  1105. But first,

  1106. in verses 1 to 3,

  1107. we see a hopeful

  1108. development.

  1109. It says,

  1110. Then all the commanders

  1111. of the forces

  1112. and Johanan,

  1113. the son of Kerea,

  1114. and Jezaniah,

  1115. the son of Hoshiah,

  1116. and all the people

  1117. from the least

  1118. to the greatest,

  1119. came near

  1120. and said to Jeremiah

  1121. the prophet,

  1122. Let our plea

  1123. for mercy

  1124. come before you

1125. and pray to the Lord

  1126. your God for us

  1127. for all this remnant

  1128. because we are left

  1129. with but a few

1130. as your eyes see us,

  1131. that the Lord

  1132. your God

  1133. may show us

1134. the way we should go

  1135. and the thing

  1136. that we should do.

1137. So while at a rest stop

  1138. in Bethlehem

1139. on their way to Egypt,

  1140. the remnant of Judah

  1141. determined

  1142. it would be best

  1143. for them

  1144. to consult Jeremiah

  1145. since this

  1146. prominent prophet

  1147. was already

  1148. with them.

  1149. So all the commanders

  1150. and all the people

  1151. from the least

  1152. to the greatest,

  1153. it says,

  1154. the whole community,

  1155. they plead with Jeremiah,

  1156. come together

  1157. and inquire of God

  1158. to find out

  1159. where they should go

1160. and what they should do.

1161. So this is a big,

  1162. weighty decision for them

  1163. because there's only

1164. a few of them left

  1165. and they're afraid

  1166. that the remnant,

1167. all the people of Judah,

  1168. would perish altogether.

  1169. And as they are

  1170. pleading with him,

  1171. Jeremiah tells them

  1172. in verse 4,

  1173. I have heard you,

  1174. behold,

  1175. I will pray

1176. to the Lord your God

  1177. according to your request

  1178. and whatever the Lord

  1179. answers you,

  1180. I will tell you,

  1181. I will keep nothing

  1182. back from you.

  1183. And then the people

  1184. respond by expressing

  1185. their sincerity

1186. and they vow to obey

  1187. whatever the Lord says.

  1188. In verses 5 to 6,

1189. may the Lord be a true

  1190. and faithful witness

  1191. against us

1192. if we do not act

1193. according to all the word

  1194. with which the Lord

  1195. your God sends you

  1196. to us.

  1197. Whether it is good

  1198. or bad,

  1199. we will obey

1200. the voice of the Lord

  1201. our God

1202. to whom we are sending you

1203. that it may be well

  1204. with us

  1205. when we obey

  1206. the voice

  1207. of the Lord

  1208. our God.

1209. So when making a pledge

  1210. to do something,

  1211. it was common

  1212. in this culture

  1213. to call people

  1214. as a witness

  1215. against them

  1216. should they fail

  1217. to do that.

  1218. And so if I don't do

  1219. such and such,

1220. he will be a witness

  1221. against me.

  1222. Now when you wanted

  1223. to be extra emphatic,

  1224. you would call someone

1225. to be a faithful witness.

  1226. If I don't do

  1227. such and such,

1228. he will be a faithful witness

  1229. against me.

  1230. You see that

  1231. throughout scripture.

  1232. But here the people

  1233. are even more emphatic

  1234. than that.

  1235. They say,

1236. if we don't do this,

  1237. may the Lord

  1238. be a true

  1239. and faithful witness

  1240. against us

1241. if we do not act

1242. according to all the word

  1243. with which the Lord

  1244. your God

  1245. sends you to us.

  1246. And they say that

  1247. whether it's good

  1248. or bad,

  1249. they will obey

1250. the voice of the Lord.

  1251. Whether we like it

  1252. or not,

  1253. whether it seems

  1254. good to us

  1255. or not,

  1256. no matter what

  1257. the Lord says,

  1258. we will obey.

  1259. It's encouraging

1260. to hear them say that,

  1261. right,

  1262. after all the unfaithful

  1263. and disobedience

  1264. we've seen

  1265. throughout the book

  1266. of Jeremiah.

  1267. It seems like

  1268. finally people

  1269. have learned

  1270. their lesson

  1271. after the fall

  1272. of Jerusalem

  1273. and are now

  1274. about to sincerely

  1275. obey the Lord

  1276. and follow him.

  1277. But God keeps them

1278. waiting for a little while.

  1279. In verse 7,

  1280. it tells us that

1281. at the end of 10 days,

1282. the word of the Lord

  1283. came to Jeremiah.

  1284. This is instructive

  1285. for us

  1286. because it shows us

  1287. once again

  1288. that Jeremiah

  1289. was a true prophet.

  1290. Jeremiah could have

  1291. manipulated this situation

  1292. by simply telling them

  1293. his personal preference

  1294. and styling it

1295. as the word of the Lord.

1296. But he doesn't do that.

1297. He waits on the Lord

  1298. and listens

1299. until he hears from him

1300. and it takes 10 days.

  1301. Especially here

  1302. in Cambridge

  1303. and nowadays,

  1304. I feel like it's rare

  1305. to find people

  1306. really earnestly

  1307. praying and waiting

  1308. on the Lord.

  1309. I think sometimes

  1310. it's because

  1311. we've let our hearts

  1312. get too busy.

  1313. We're hurried.

  1314. We've become

  1315. too preoccupied

  1316. with our own purposes

  1317. and priorities

  1318. that we don't wait

  1319. to find out

  1320. what God wants.

  1321. Other times,

1322. we don't wait on God

  1323. because we no longer

  1324. believe that God speaks.

  1325. we think that we're

  1326. on our own

  1327. in our decision making

1328. so we create a chart,

1329. weigh the pros and cons,

  1330. make a decision

  1331. using our pragmatic wisdom.

  1332. I'm not saying

1333. you shouldn't do those things.

  1334. Making a chart

  1335. is great.

  1336. Weighing the pros

  1337. and cons

  1338. is great.

  1339. Using our practical wisdom

  1340. is great.

  1341. And yes,

  1342. God can

  1343. and he does

  1344. use those processes

  1345. to lead us.

  1346. but what about

  1347. waiting on the voice

  1348. of the Lord?

  1349. God still speaks.

  1350. And sometimes

  1351. his will

  1352. confounds

  1353. the best

  1354. of human wisdom.

  1355. The same

  1356. Spirit of God

  1357. who spoke

  1358. to prophet Jeremiah

  1359. now indwells

  1360. every follower

  1361. of Jesus Christ

  1362. and we can

  1363. hear from him.

  1364. People often

  1365. ask me,

  1366. how do I hear

  1367. from God?

  1368. How can I

  1369. recognize his voice?

  1370. The Bible

  1371. doesn't explicitly

  1372. answer that question

  1373. because it was

  1374. never supposed

  1375. to be

  1376. mysterious.

  1377. Voice recognition

  1378. is a pretty

  1379. remarkable thing.

  1380. Nowadays,

  1381. we have

  1382. caller ID

1383. on all of our phones

  1384. so we don't

  1385. really have to

  1386. use that anymore.

1387. But back in the day

  1388. when you were

  1389. using landlines,

  1390. people would call

  1391. and you would

  1392. pick up and say

  1393. hello and as soon

  1394. as you hear

  1395. their hello,

  1396. you could tell

  1397. who it was

  1398. because you

  1399. recognized

  1400. the person's

  1401. voice.

  1402. Our voices

  1403. are unique,

  1404. right?

  1405. That's why

  1406. voice recognition

  1407. works with Siri

  1408. and Google Assistant

  1409. and such,

  1410. right?

  1411. And we learn

  1412. someone's voice

  1413. how?

  1414. By spending

  1415. time

  1416. with that person.

  1417. By getting

  1418. to know

  1419. that person

  1420. through repetition,

  1421. hearing that

  1422. person's voice

  1423. again and again.

  1424. It's the same

  1425. in our relationship

  1426. with God.

  1427. Galatians 5.25

  1428. speaks of

  1429. keeping in step

  1430. with the Spirit.

  1431. We're supposed

  1432. to walk with Him,

  1433. keep up with Him.

  1434. 1 Corinthians 2.14-16

  1435. teaches that

  1436. a Christian is taught

1437. by the Spirit of God

  1438. and therefore

  1439. have the mind

  1440. of Christ.

  1441. When you walk

  1442. closely with Christ,

  1443. when you seek

  1444. God's mind

  1445. regularly in His

  1446. Word and Scriptures,

  1447. when you're

  1448. accustomed to

  1449. obeying the

  1450. impressions of the

  1451. Spirit on your

  1452. heart,

  1453. you come to have

  1454. the mind of Christ

  1455. so that you

  1456. think like Him.

  1457. You know what

  1458. He would think

  1459. or say or do

  1460. in a given

  1461. situation.

  1462. In John,

  1463. Jesus says,

  1464. I am the good

  1465. shepherd.

  1466. In John 10,

  1467. He says that

  1468. when the shepherd

  1469. has brought out

  1470. all his own,

  1471. he goes before

  1472. them and the

  1473. sheep follow Him

  1474. for they know

  1475. His voice.

  1476. A stranger

  1477. they will not

  1478. follow,

  1479. but they will

  1480. flee from Him

  1481. for they do not

  1482. know the voice

  1483. of strangers.

  1484. There's an

  1485. incredible YouTube

  1486. video I saw

  1487. recently.

  1488. It's entitled,

  1489. Do Sheep Only

  1490. Obey Their

  1491. Master's Voice?

  1492. I guess some of

  1493. you guys seen

  1494. that.

  1495. I don't know.

  1496. It takes place

  1497. at a farm in

  1498. Norway.

  1499. Several strangers

  1500. try to mimic

  1501. the call of

  1502. the shepherd

  1503. and try to

  1504. bring the

  1505. flock of sheep

  1506. back to the

  1507. fold.

  1508. Several visitors

  1509. attempt it,

  1510. but as they're

  1511. trying their best,

  1512. the sheep

  1513. completely ignore

  1514. them.

  1515. They don't even

  1516. lift their head,

  1517. they just keep

  1518. eating the grass.

  1519. It's really

  1520. entertaining to

  1521. watch.

  1522. And then after

  1523. they've all taken

  1524. their turns,

  1525. the shepherd

  1526. calls out to

  1527. them.

  1528. They immediately

  1529. look up,

  1530. turn their heads

  1531. toward the shepherd.

  1532. They start

  1533. bawling in response,

  1534. and then they

  1535. all run over

  1536. to the fold.

  1537. It's amazing

  1538. to see.

  1539. It's almost

  1540. moving to

  1541. watch it.

  1542. Yeah.

  1543. And Jesus

  1544. said,

  1545. My sheep

  1546. hear my

  1547. voice,

  1548. and I know

  1549. them,

  1550. and they

  1551. follow me.

  1552. You may not

  1553. hear the audible

  1554. voice of God,

  1555. but God speaks

  1556. through his

  1557. word.

  1558. God speaks

  1559. through his

  1560. spirit,

  1561. and God often

  1562. uses his people,

  1563. the church,

  1564. to speak as

  1565. well.

  1566. Are you

  1567. familiar with

  1568. the voice

  1569. of the Lord?

  1570. Is it

  1571. your habit

  1572. to wait

  1573. on the

  1574. voice of

  1575. the Lord?

  1576. It was a

  1577. good thing

  1578. that Jeremiah

  1579. waited,

  1580. because God's

  1581. word challenged

  1582. in this case

  1583. their common

  1584. sense.

  1585. Jeremiah says

  1586. in verses

  1587. 10 to 12,

  1588. If you will

  1589. remain in this

  1590. land,

  1591. then I will

  1592. build you up

  1593. and not

  1594. pull you down.

  1595. I will plant

  1596. you and not

  1597. pluck you up,

  1598. for I relent

  1599. of the disaster

  1600. that I did

  1601. to you.

  1602. Do not

  1603. fear the

  1604. king of

  1605. Babylon,

  1606. of whom

  1607. you are

  1608. afraid.

  1609. Do not

  1610. fear him,

  1611. declares

  1612. the Lord,

  1613. for I am

  1614. with you

  1615. to save

  1616. you and

  1617. to deliver

  1618. you from

  1619. his hand.

  1620. I will

  1621. grant you

  1622. mercy,

  1623. that he

  1624. may have

  1625. mercy on

  1626. you,

  1627. and let

  1628. you remain

  1629. in your

  1630. own land.

  1631. It's a

  1632. wonderful

  1633. promise.

  1634. God says

  1635. he has

  1636. relented

  1637. of the

  1638. disaster

  1639. that he

  1640. brought

  1641. to them.

  1642. His

  1643. justice

  1644. has been

  1645. satisfied,

  1646. and he's

  1647. no longer

  1648. pouring out

  1649. his wrath

  1650. upon them,

  1651. and if

  1652. they obey

  1653. him now,

  1654. the same

  1655. promise that

  1656. God had

  1657. made to

  1658. the

  1659. exiles

  1660. will be

  1661. theirs.

  1662. They will

  1663. not be

  1664. plucked out,

  1665. they will

  1666. be planted

  1667. and restored

  1668. to the

  1669. land.

  1670. But,

  1671. Jeremiah

  1672. continues in

  1673. verses 13

  1674. to 18,

  1675. if you

  1676. say,

  1677. we will

  1678. not remain

  1679. in this

  1680. land,

  1681. disobeying

  1682. the voice

  1683. of the

  1684. Lord your

  1685. God,

  1686. and saying,

  1687. no,

  1688. we will

  1689. go to

  1690. the land

  1691. of Egypt,

  1692. where we

  1693. shall not

  1694. see war,

  1695. or hear

  1696. the sound

  1697. of the

  1698. trumpet,

  1699. or be

  1700. hungry for

  1701. bread,

  1702. and we

  1703. will dwell

  1704. there.

  1705. Then,

  1706. hear the

  1707. word of the

  1708. Lord,

  1709. O remnant

  1710. of Judah.

  1711. Thus,

  1712. says the

  1713. Lord of

  1714. hosts,

  1715. the God

  1716. of Israel,

  1717. if you

  1718. set your

  1719. faces to

  1720. enter Egypt

  1721. and go to

  1722. live there,

  1723. then the

  1724. sword that

  1725. you fear

  1726. shall overtake

  1727. you there

  1728. in the land

  1729. of Egypt,

  1730. and the

  1731. famine of

  1732. which you

  1733. are afraid

  1734. shall follow

  1735. close after

  1736. you to

  1737. Egypt,

  1738. and there

  1739. you shall

  1740. die.

  1741. All the

  1742. men who

  1743. set their

  1744. faces to

  1745. go to

  1746. Egypt to

  1747. live there

  1748. shall die

  1749. by the

  1750. sword,

  1751. by famine,

  1752. and by

  1753. pestilence.

  1754. They shall

  1755. have no

  1756. remnant or

  1757. survivor from

  1758. the disaster

  1759. that I

  1760. will bring

  1761. upon them.

  1762. The people

  1763. were considering

  1764. fleeing to

  1765. Egypt because

  1766. they feared

  1767. that the

  1768. remnant of

  1769. Judah would

  1770. perish.

  1771. They would

  1772. not survive

  1773. if they

  1774. stayed in

  1775. the land

  1776. because of

  1777. the Babylonian

  1778. retaliation.

  1779. But Jeremiah

  1780. warns them

  1781. instead that

  1782. if you flee

  1783. to Egypt,

  1784. what you

  1785. fear will

  1786. exactly happen

  1787. to you,

  1788. and there

  1789. will be no

  1790. remnant or

  1791. survivor left

  1792. from the

  1793. disaster that

  1794. I will bring

  1795. upon those

  1796. who flee to

  1797. Egypt.

  1798. And as

  1799. Jeremiah is

  1800. relaying this

  1801. word of

  1802. God to

  1803. them,

  1804. he must be

  1805. looking at

  1806. their faces

  1807. or something

  1808. and seeing

  1809. their disapproval

  1810. or disbelief

  1811. because he

  1812. anticipates what

  1813. their response

  1814. will be in

  1815. verses 19

  1816. to 22.

  1817. Jeremiah says,

  1818. The Lord has

  1819. said to you,

  1820. O remnant

  1821. of Judah,

  1822. do not go

  1823. to Egypt.

  1824. Know for a

  1825. certainty that

  1826. I have warned

  1827. you this day

  1828. that you have

  1829. gone astray

  1830. at the cost

  1831. of your lives.

  1832. For you sent

  1833. me to the

  1834. Lord your God

  1835. saying,

  1836. Pray for us,

  1837. the Lord our God,

  1838. and whatever

  1839. the Lord our God

  1840. says,

  1841. declare to us

  1842. and we will

  1843. do it.

  1844. And I have

  1845. this day

  1846. declared it to

  1847. you,

  1848. but you have

  1849. not obeyed

  1850. the voice

  1851. of the Lord

  1852. your God

  1853. in anything

  1854. that he has

  1855. sent me to

  1856. tell you.

  1857. Now therefore

  1858. know for a

  1859. certainty that

  1860. you shall die

  1861. by disorder,

  1862. by famine,

  1863. and by pestilence

  1864. in the place

  1865. where you desire

  1866. to go live.

  1867. These Judeans

  1868. just did not

  1869. see this coming.

  1870. They were so

  1871. sure that

  1872. God's word

  1873. would agree

  1874. with their own

  1875. view of things

  1876. that they

  1877. had vowed

  1878. to obey God

  1879. no matter what,

  1880. whether for

  1881. good or bad.

  1882. But it turns

  1883. out that they

  1884. were not

  1885. actually prepared

  1886. to obey God

  1887. at all costs.

  1888. They were only

  1889. prepared to obey

  1890. God as long

  1891. as his word

  1892. agreed.

  1893. with their

  1894. own.

  1895. They wanted

  1896. God to

  1897. confirm their

  1898. own opinions,

  1899. not contradict

  1900. them.

  1901. And so they

  1902. respond tragically.

  1903. They don't

  1904. respond.

  1905. They disobey

  1906. the voice

  1907. of the Lord.

  1908. In fact,

  1909. they accuse

  1910. Jeremiah

  1911. of telling

  1912. a lie.

  1913. And they

  1914. accuse Baruch,

  1915. his scribe,

  1916. of setting

  1917. him up,

  1918. of pressuring

  1919. him to do

  1920. this.

  1921. And at

  1922. the end

  1923. of,

  1924. in verse

  1925. seven,

  1926. it says,

  1927. and they

  1928. came into

  1929. the land

  1930. of Egypt,

  1931. for they

  1932. did not

  1933. obey the

  1934. voice of

  1935. the Lord,

  1936. and they

  1937. arrived at

  1938. Tephenus.

  1939. They fell

  1940. into denial.

  1941. They were

  1942. so persuaded

  1943. that going

  1944. to Egypt

  1945. was the

  1946. only way

  1947. to ensure

  1948. their safety,

  1949. their mind

  1950. was completely

  1951. closed off

  1952. to any

  1953. other possibility.

  1954. and they

  1955. don't dare

  1956. say that

  1957. God is

  1958. wrong,

  1959. but they

  1960. deny that

  1961. that's

  1962. what God

  1963. really

  1964. said.

  1965. And note

  1966. the repetition

  1967. of the phrase

  1968. the voice

  1969. of the

  1970. Lord here.

  1971. In verse

  1972. four and

  1973. verse seven,

  1974. it says the

  1975. voice of the

  1976. Lord,

  1977. they did not

  1978. obey the

  1979. voice of

  1980. the Lord.

  1981. Earlier

  1982. in chapter

  1983. 40,

  1984. verse 3,

  1985. Nebuchadrach

  1986. accused the

  1987. people of

  1988. Judah of

  1989. sinning against

  1990. the Lord

  1991. and not

  1992. obeying

  1993. his voice.

  1994. And in

  1995. chapter 42,

  1996. the phrase

  1997. voice of the

  1998. Lord was

  1999. repeated four

  2000. times and

  2001. here again

  2002. twice in

  2003. short,

  2004. in a few

  2005. verses of

  2006. chapter 43.

  2007. So this is a

  2008. major theme of

  2009. these chapters.

  2010. God has

  2011. spoken,

  2012. his voice

  2013. has been

  2014. heard,

  2015. but the

  2016. people of

  2017. Judah

  2018. disobey.

  2019. We too

  2020. often ask

  2021. God for

  2022. direction when

  2023. we are at

  2024. crossroads of

  2025. our lives.

  2026. We ask him

  2027. what his

  2028. will for us

  2029. really is.

  2030. But perhaps

  2031. the more

  2032. important question

  2033. to ask is

  2034. whether or

  2035. not we are

  2036. prepared to

  2037. obey

  2038. the voice

  2039. of the

  2040. Lord.

  2041. It's all

  2042. too familiar,

  2043. isn't it?

  2044. Our young

  2045. man says,

  2046. I will

  2047. follow you

  2048. God,

  2049. wherever you

  2050. go Lord.

  2051. I will

  2052. become a

  2053. pastor or

  2054. missionary to

  2055. serve you and

  2056. I'm going to

  2057. win the world

  2058. back for you.

  2059. He says

  2060. this because

  2061. he thinks

  2062. that ministry

  2063. will make

  2064. much of

  2065. him.

  2066. Because he

  2067. thinks he's

  2068. going to get

  2069. a large

  2070. following right

  2071. away.

  2072. Speak at

  2073. conferences,

  2074. write books.

  2075. But when

  2076. God entrusts a

  2077. small church

  2078. to him and

  2079. instead of

  2080. widespread acclaim

  2081. he receives

  2082. frequent criticism

  2083. from his own

  2084. members, he

  2085. calls it quits

  2086. because that's

  2087. not what he

  2088. had signed

  2089. up for.

  2090. We often

  2091. say, just

  2092. say the

  2093. word God,

  2094. just tell me

  2095. clearly and

  2096. I'll do it.

  2097. but when

  2098. obeying God's

  2099. revealed will

  2100. in scripture

  2101. makes us

  2102. unpopular,

  2103. when we

  2104. find its

  2105. teaching

  2106. disagreeable

  2107. to our

  2108. sensibilities,

  2109. we rationalize

  2110. it or

  2111. simply ignore

  2112. it.

  2113. Like

  2114. Azariah and

  2115. Johanan and

  2116. the rest of

  2117. the quote

  2118. insolent men

  2119. of Judah,

  2120. we deny

  2121. God's

  2122. word.

  2123. But whether

  2124. it is

  2125. agreeable to

  2126. us or

  2127. not, we

  2128. must obey

  2129. the voice

  2130. of the

  2131. Lord.

  2132. And because

  2133. the Judean

  2134. remnant did

  2135. not obey

  2136. the voice

  2137. of the

  2138. Lord,

  2139. they will

  2140. perish.

  2141. Throughout

  2142. these few

  2143. chapters we

  2144. saw a

  2145. recurring fear

  2146. that the

  2147. remnant of

  2148. Judah would

  2149. perish

  2150. forever.

  2151. In chapter

  2152. 40, 15,

  2153. Johanan asked

  2154. to take out

  2155. Ishmael ahead

  2156. of time because

  2157. he worried

  2158. that if

  2159. Gedaliah is

  2160. murdered that

  2161. the remnant

  2162. of Judah would

  2163. be no more.

  2164. In chapter

  2165. 42, verse

  2166. 2, the

  2167. remnant, after

  2168. being recovered

  2169. from Ishmael,

  2170. they said to

  2171. Jeremiah,

  2172. let our plea

  2173. for mercy come

  2174. before you and

  2175. pray to the

  2176. Lord your God

  2177. for us, for

  2178. all this

  2179. remnant, because

  2180. we are left

  2181. with but a

  2182. few.

  2183. And this is

  2184. because the

  2185. people who

  2186. were made in

  2187. Judah believed

  2188. that they were

  2189. the future of

  2190. God's people.

  2191. And because of

  2192. that, they

  2193. believed it was

  2194. absolutely necessary

  2195. that they survive

  2196. for God's plan

  2197. of salvation to

  2198. unfold.

  2199. But their

  2200. return to

  2201. Egypt meant

  2202. that they

  2203. would be

  2204. wiped out.

  2205. So then is

  2206. that the

  2207. end of God's

  2208. people?

  2209. Did God's

  2210. plan to

  2211. redeem a

  2212. people for

  2213. himself and

  2214. to establish

  2215. the kingdom

  2216. of God

  2217. here on

  2218. earth fail?

  2219. That's the

  2220. question we're

  2221. left with at

  2222. this part of

  2223. the passage.

  2224. But hope

  2225. springs from a

  2226. seemingly hopeless

  2227. place.

  2228. even though

  2229. the remnant

  2230. in Judah

  2231. will die

  2232. off because

  2233. they flee to

  2234. Egypt.

  2235. God's plan to

  2236. redeem a

  2237. people for

  2238. himself continues

  2239. through the

  2240. Judean exiles

  2241. in Babylon,

  2242. as God had

  2243. promised in

  2244. chapter 24.

  2245. Matthew 1,

  2246. 12 to 16,

  2247. tells us how

  2248. this promise

  2249. was fulfilled.

  2250. Remember,

  2251. Jeconiah was

  2252. the king of

  2253. Judah that was

  2254. exiled to

  2255. Babylon.

  2256. And after the

  2257. deportation to

  2258. Babylon,

  2259. Jeconiah was

  2260. the father of

  2261. Sheothiah,

  2262. and Sheothiah

  2263. the father of

  2264. Zerubbabel,

  2265. and Zerubbabel

  2266. the father of

  2267. Abiud,

  2268. and Abiud the

  2269. father of

  2270. Eliakim,

  2271. and Eliakim

  2272. the father of

  2273. Azor,

  2274. and Azor the

  2275. father of

  2276. Zadok,

  2277. and Zadok the

  2278. father of

  2279. Aachim,

  2280. and Aachim the

  2281. father of

  2282. Eliud,

  2283. and Eliud the

  2284. father of

  2285. Elesser,

  2286. and Elesser the

  2287. father of

  2288. Maz Esther,

  2289. and cose tom

  2290. the father of

  2291. Jacob,

  2292. and grave the

  2293. father of

  2294. Joseph the

  2295. husband of

  2296. Mary,

2297. of whom Jesus was born,

  2298. who is called Christ,

  2299. the anointed one,

  2300. the Messiah,

  2301. the Savior King

  2302. that was to come

2303. to establish the kingdom of God,

2304. to lead the people of God.

2305. Jesus is that promised king

2306. and what did the Judean people

2307. fail to do for themselves

2308. because even the exiles of Babylon

2309. will continue to sin against the Lord

2310. and be unfaithful to him.

2311. They will not heed the voice of the Lord

2312. but God sends his only son,

  2313. Jesus Christ,

  2314. as a man

2315. to live the life of perfect obedience,

2316. heeding the voice of the Lord perfectly

  2317. and he,

2318. the perfect son of man

  2319. and son of God,

2320. dies in the place of sinners like us

  2321. who have refused

2322. to heed the voice of the Lord

2323. and he dies on the cross for our sins

2324. so that we can once again

  2325. have the path

2326. to enter the kingdom of God

  2327. through him.

  2328. We were captives

  2329. to sin and Satan,

  2330. exiles

  2331. in foreign territory

2332. but King Jesus calls us home

2333. and it's by aligning ourselves to him,

2334. submitting to him in faith,

  2335. that's how we enter

  2336. the kingdom of God.

2337. So let me ask you,

  2338. have you heard

2339. and followed the voice of this king?

2340. Are you attuned to the voice of the Lord?

  2341. Please take a moment,

2342. feel free to close your eyes

2343. to reflect on that question.

  2344. what is the Lord

  2345. saying to you

  2346. this morning

  2347. through his word?

  2348. Amen.

  2349. Amen.

  2350. Amen.

  2351. Amen.

  2352. Amen.

  2353. Amen.

  2354. Amen.

  2355. Amen.

  2356. Amen.

  2357. Amen.

  2358. Amen.

  2359. Amen.

  2360. Amen.

  2361. Amen.

  2362. Amen.

  2363. Amen.

  2364. Amen.
