  1. Here we go.

  2. Tonight we're on Psalm 97.

  3. And I thought I was going home first, so my Bible is at home.

  4. So it's just... I know. I have the Bible on the phone, it just feels different.

  5. So you just have to bear with me if I feel a little uncomfortable.

  6. No, I'm just kidding. It's fine.

  7. Psalm 97.

  8. The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice.

  9. Let the many coastlands be glad.

  10. Clouds and thick darkness are all around him.

  11. Righteousness and judgment are the foundation of his throne.

  12. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around.

  13. His lightnings light up the world.

  14. The earth sees and trembles.

  15. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.

  16. The heavens proclaim his righteousness and all the peoples see his glory.

  17. All worshipers of images are put to shame who make their boast in worthless idols.

  18. Worship him, all you gods.

  19. Zion hears and is glad.

  20. And the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments, O Lord.

  21. For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth.

  22. You are exalted far above all gods.

  23. O you who love the Lord, hate evil.

  24. He preserves the lives of his saints.

  25. He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

  26. Light is sown for the righteous and joy for the upright in heart.

  27. So rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name.

  28. So the title in this psalm is The Lord Reigns.

  29. A psalm, a hymn celebrating God's rule and reign over the universe,

  30. over his creation, and over this world.

  31. Described in terms of a king ruling over a kingdom.

  32. But it's not describing just any king, but the king above all kings.

  33. So we have a king who rules with righteousness and justice.

  34. A king stronger than all his adversaries.

  35. Not a king who rules over a nation, but a king who rules over all nations.

  36. Not a king who is elected by any people, but created all people.

  37. And not a king who is given control, but a king who has been, always been, in control.

  38. So as we look at verse 1, it says,

  39. The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice.

  40. Let the many coastlands be glad.

  41. The coastlands here is, in other words, another way of saying it would be,

  42. all the lands that ships can reach.

  43. So it could be reworded, all the nations, all the known nations be glad.

  44. And verse 2, clouds and thick darkness are all around him.

  45. There's some imagery or some pictures here of connected back to Exodus.

  46. So we're reminded of Exodus 19, where we see God coming down on Mount Sinai.

  47. Verses 16 through 18 of Exodus says,

  48. On the morning of the third day, there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain,

  49. and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

  50. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God,

  51. and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.

  52. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because God had descended on it in fire.

  53. And the smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

  54. So we get a picture of God's unapproachable majesty as he comes down and settles on the mountain.

  55. And then the second half of verse 2 follows that up by saying,

  56. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

  57. So when we first think of the clouds and the thick darkness and this unapproachable majesty,

  58. it's easy to kind of get a disconnected, kind of distant feeling towards God.

  59. But then the second half of that verse brings it back.

  60. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

  61. That's not a picture of a distant, unsympathetic king,

  62. but one who cares about what is good and right.

  63. If he's righteous and justice, then that's what he stands for.

  64. He stands for perfect justice, and he rules with righteousness.

  65. Verse 3 says,

  66. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries.

  67. Again, looking back to the first couple books of the Bible,

  68. we can think of areas where God judged with fire.

  69. So you have Sodom and Gomorrah where he rained down fire on them.

  70. You have him using fire in part of the ten plagues when Moses was coming against Pharaoh.

  71. And we also have connections back to end times in Revelation.

  72. Revelation 8-7 says,

  73. So what's really cool about Psalm 97 is,

  74. As you go through it, there's a lot of connections back to earlier in history,

  75. and there's connections to the end.

  76. But as you'll see in a few minutes,

  77. it like is grounded in Jesus Christ and his salvation for us,

  78. his death on the cross for us.

  79. And we'll get into that in a couple of minutes.

  80. Continue on with verses 4 and 5.

  81. It says,

  82. His lightnings light up the world.

  83. The earth sees and trembles.

  84. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth.

  85. Now we know that God, because he created the mountains,

  86. he has the power to melt them if he wanted to.

  87. But I think here the psalmist is probably more referring to nations rather than mountains.

  88. If you were to picture looking at a globe,

  89. and you see nations are built up,

  90. kind of like a mountain,

  91. if you're looking at a globe in that sense.

  92. And we know that God brings down nations,

  93. and he lifts nations up.

  94. Micah 1, 2, and 3 says this,

  95. as we hear the word of the Lord given to Micah

  96. concerning the judgment on Judah and Israel.

  97. It says,

  98. Here, you peoples, all of you,

  99. pay attention, O earth,

  100. and all that is in it,

  101. and let the Lord God be a witness against you,

  102. the Lord from his holy temple.

  103. For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place,

  104. and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth,

  105. and the mountains will melt under him,

  106. and the valleys will split open like wax before the fire,

  107. like waters poured down a steep place.

  108. All this for the transgression of Jacob,

  109. and for the sins of the house of Israel.

  110. And, you know,

  111. that sounds similar to some of the chapters

  112. we just went through with in Jeremiah,

  113. where there's just constant judgment

  114. that's being given to the people of Israel

  115. as they continue to live in sin

  116. and rebel against God.

  117. So we see this picture of God's power and his judgment.

  118. But like I mentioned before,

  119. there's a lot more going on in this psalm than just that.

  120. If this is a psalm of celebration,

  121. which looking at some of these verses,

  122. this is very much a psalm of celebration,

  123. then it's got to be more than just power and judgment.

  124. Not that there's anything wrong with that,

  125. but it's hard to feel celebration

  126. when you're talking about judgment

  127. and you're talking about God's power.

  128. So if we take a closer look at verse 1,

  129. the Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice.

  130. The psalm is celebrating the reign of the Lord

  131. and praising who he is.

  132. The Lord reigns.

  133. Just saying the Lord reigns

  134. is like the centerpiece of the gospel that we preach.

  135. Jesus has come.

  136. He's risen.

  137. He reigns.

  138. That's the cornerstone of the gospel.

  139. Jesus is the cornerstone of the church.

  140. He's risen and all the power that's in heaven

  141. and on earth has been given to him.

  142. So that's the celebration that we start to realize

  143. as we look at even just verse 1 starting out.

  144. And then as we move to verse 6,

  145. it says the heavens proclaim his righteousness

  146. and all the people see his glory.

  147. So we see his reign and we also see his righteousness.

  148. The Lord reigns with

  149. and never moves from

  150. a foundation of pure righteousness

  151. and complete holiness.

  152. And it's from that foundation,

  153. that throne that he judges.

  154. So while we don't understand what God is doing,

  155. we can rest in the fact

  156. that he's never going to do us wrong

  157. because of his righteousness.

  158. If he does,

  159. then he wouldn't be righteous.

  160. Charles Spurgeon says,

  161. absolute power is safe

  162. in the hands of him

  163. who cannot err or act unrighteously.

  164. I couldn't help but think of

  165. some of the Avenger movies

  166. where superheroes have all this power,

  167. but even with that,

  168. they're not perfect.

  169. And they fight for

  170. who's doing the right thing.

  171. They fight for

  172. who should have

  173. kind of governance

  174. over these special powers.

  175. So they fight amongst themselves.

  176. It isn't a problem

  177. when we're talking about God

  178. because he doesn't err.

  179. He doesn't act unrighteously.

  180. And so for that,

  181. we can glory

  182. and we can proclaim

  183. the greatness

  184. in that righteousness.

  185. Verse 7 says,

  186. All worshipers of images

  187. are put to shame

  188. who make their boast

  189. in worthless idols.

  190. Worship him,

  191. all you gods.

  192. Just accenting the fact

  193. that putting our trust

  194. in idols

  195. or anything that are made

  196. with human hands

  197. is an empty act.

  198. So if you think

  199. of the progression

  200. of a person

  201. before and after

  202. they're saved,

  203. they worship things

  204. of this world.

  205. They worship idols

  206. and then God opens

  207. their eyes

  208. to the one true God

  209. and they see that shame

  210. in what they used

  211. to worship.

  212. So while God

  213. doesn't look at them

  214. in shame,

  215. it's easy to see

  216. where it talks about

  217. they're put to shame

  218. because they think

  219. about what they used

  220. to worship,

  221. about what they used

  222. to live for

  223. and go after

  224. and now they go

  225. after the one true God.

  226. Verse 8 says,

  227. Zion hears

  228. and is glad

  229. and the daughters

  230. of Judah rejoice

  231. because of your judgments,

  232. O Lord.

  233. This verse could be

  234. referring to

  235. a specific occasion

  236. that has taken place

  237. with the people

  238. of Israel

  239. and judgment

  240. that has been

  241. put out

  242. against their enemy.

  243. That could be

  244. why this psalm

  245. was written.

  246. I'm not sure.

  247. but

  248. we also know

  249. that there will be

  250. a time in the end

  251. where

  252. there will be

  253. a remnant

  254. of God's

  255. first,

  256. if you will,

  257. his first

  258. chosen people,

  259. the Israelites

  260. or the Jews

  261. when he will

  262. open their eyes

  263. and he will

  264. save them.

  265. So we have

  266. Zion hearing

  267. because their eyes

  268. have been opened

  269. and now

  270. they'll be glad

  271. and they'll rejoice

  272. because they're

  273. reminded of

  274. their deliverance

  275. that they were

  276. promised

  277. and the judgment

  278. against those

  279. who were against

  280. them that they

  281. were promised

  282. and that we get

  283. to see.

  284. So we get to see

  285. a picture of that

  286. that they could be

  287. going through

  288. here in psalm

  289. and also

  290. in the future

  291. when God

  292. opens their

  293. eyes to the gospel.

  294. verse 9 says,

  295. For you, O Lord,

  296. are most high

  297. over all the earth.

  298. You are exalted

  299. far above all

  300. gods.

  301. This was used

  302. in part of

  303. Paul's introduction

  304. to the

  305. Christians

  306. in Ephesus

  307. when he says

  308. this in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  309. chapter 1.

  310. And what is

  311. the immeasurable

  312. greatness of his

  313. power towards us?

  314. Speaking of God,

  315. obviously.

  316. According to the

  317. working of his

  318. great might

  319. that he

  320. worked in Christ

  321. when he raised

  322. him from the dead

  323. and seated him

  324. on the right hand

  325. in the heavenly places.

  326. Far above all

  327. rule and authority

  328. and power

  329. and dominion

  330. above every name

  331. that is named

  332. not only in this age

  333. but also

  334. in the one to come.

  335. So we see

  336. this

  337. high above

  338. every name

  339. this high

  340. above all

  341. the earth

  342. exalted above

  343. all gods

  344. little g

  345. and that's

  346. part of

  347. this

  348. introduction

  349. this encouragement

  350. that Paul

  351. has given to

  352. the Corinthians

  353. even in the

  354. New Testament.

  355. If idols

  356. and gods

  357. are worthless

  358. and God

  359. so they're like

  360. down here

  361. as much

  362. as we want

  363. to put

  364. worth

  365. and price

  366. to them

  367. if things

  368. that man

  369. makes

  370. is down

  371. here

  372. at the bottom

  373. worthlessness

  374. and God

  375. is most

  376. high

  377. over all

  378. the earth

  379. then

  380. what does

  381. it

  382. profit

  383. us

  384. to spend

  385. our energy

  386. on those

  387. things

  388. versus

  389. the creator

  390. over us

  391. they're not

  392. even like

  393. close to

  394. each other

  395. so

  396. thinking back

  397. to verse

  398. one

  399. where it

  400. says

  401. the Lord

  402. reigns

  403. Jesus

  404. being alive

  405. and us

  406. being saved

  407. we're going

  408. to keep that

  409. in mind

  410. as we read

  411. these last

  412. three verses

  413. because I

  414. think it

  415. just helps

  416. bring it

  417. more to

  418. life

  419. and give

  420. us more

  421. depth

  422. as to

  423. what it

  424. is that

  425. we're

  426. rejoicing

  427. over

  428. and why

  429. this is

  430. a celebratory

  431. song

  432. verse 10

  433. says

  434. oh you

  435. who love

  436. the Lord

  437. hate evil

  438. the reason

  439. why we're

  440. told to

  441. hate evil

  442. is because

  443. Jesus died

  444. for us

  445. to cover

  446. our sins

  447. and so

  448. if we love

  449. him

  450. we have

  451. to hate

  452. evil

  453. it's what

  454. he died

  455. for

  456. he preserves

  457. the lives

  458. of his

  459. saints

  460. he delivers

  461. them from

  462. the hand

  463. of the

  464. wicked

  465. Jesus

  466. was victorious

  467. over death

  468. it was for

  469. us his

  470. saints

  471. that sin

  472. has no

  473. power

  474. and he

  475. has ripped

  476. us

  477. from the

  478. hands

  479. of

  480. Satan

  481. verse 11

  482. says

  483. light is

  484. sown

  485. for the

  486. righteous

  487. and joy

  488. for the

  489. upright

  490. in heart

  491. so the

  492. phrase

  493. light

  494. is

  495. sown

  496. is

  497. I think

  498. is a

  499. little

  500. easier

  501. understood

  502. if we

  503. say

  504. light

  505. is

  506. dawning

  507. or in

  508. other

  509. words

  510. made

  511. visible

  512. as

  513. God's

  514. guidance

  515. for

  516. those

  517. who are

  518. righteous

  519. so if

  520. you think

  521. of it

  522. as

  523. God

  524. opening

  525. our eyes

  526. to his

  527. leading

  528. to what

  529. he has

  530. for us

  531. that's

  532. the

  533. light

  534. or the

  535. the

  536. I don't want to

  537. guidance

  538. is the best

  539. word

  540. he's opening

  541. our eyes

  542. to what

  543. he has

  544. for us

  545. that's

  546. that's

  547. what

  548. is

  549. dawning

  550. for us

  551. and likewise

  552. the joy

  553. dawns

  554. or is

  555. made

  556. visible

  557. for those

  558. who are

  559. upright

  560. and heart

  561. those

  562. who follow

  563. after

  564. God

  565. he's

  566. he fills

  567. with

  568. instruction

  569. and guidance

  570. and with

  571. joy

  572. and the

  573. verse 12

  574. rejoice in the

  575. Lord

  576. oh you

  577. righteous

  578. and give

  579. thanks to

  580. his holy

  581. name

  582. so we

  583. see

  584. returning

  585. back to

  586. verse 1

  587. where

  588. verse 1

  589. says

  590. the Lord

  591. reigns

  592. and let

  593. the earth

  594. rejoice

  595. here it

  596. says

  597. rejoice

  598. in the

  599. Lord

  600. oh you

  601. righteous

  602. and in

  603. verse 1

  604. when it

  605. says the

  606. earth is

  607. to rejoice

  608. it isn't

  609. it isn't

  610. those who

  611. don't know

  612. God that

  613. are rejoicing

  614. it's his

  615. saints that

  616. are rejoicing

  617. so we're

  618. called to

  619. rejoice in

  620. him and

  621. give thanks

  622. to his

  623. name

  624. because

  625. we are

  626. the ones

  627. who have

  628. been forgiven

  629. we've been

  630. rescued

  631. delivered

  632. guided

  633. blessed

  634. we're your

  635. joyful

  636. servants

  637. and we

  638. get to

  639. worship a

  640. holy

  641. righteous

  642. and glorious

  643. God who

  644. is above

  645. all

  646. in

  647. in

  648. in that

  649. vein

  650. in that

  651. thought

  652. of just

  653. praising

  654. God for

  655. who he

  656. is

  657. so it

  658. would be

  659. good just

  660. to take

  661. a couple

  662. minutes

  663. where we

  664. just

  665. we

  666. pray

  667. whatever

  668. comes to

  669. our

  670. mind

  671. we

  672. praise

  673. God

  674. for

  675. who

  676. he

  677. is

  678. and I

  679. want to

  680. encourage

  681. you

  682. if there's

  683. times of

  684. silence

  685. allow that

  686. to be

  687. times where

  688. we let

  689. the Holy

  690. Spirit

  691. speak to

  692. us

  693. often we

  694. don't know

  695. what to

  696. say

  697. and the

  698. Holy

  699. Spirit

  700. can give

  701. us

  702. words

  703. so

  704. not

  705. that

  706. silence

  707. needs to

  708. be

  709. where

  710. somebody

  711. would

  712. pray

  713. because

  714. it's

  715. quiet

  716. but

  717. a time

  718. where

  719. we're

  720. silent

  721. before

  722. the

  723. Lord

  724. and

  725. if

  726. there's

  727. something

  728. that

  729. we're

  730. to

  731. praise

  732. or

  733. ask

  734. for

  735. then

  736. that

  737. will

  738. be

  739. laid

  740. on

  741. our

  742. heart

  743. if

  744. we

  745. don't

  746. know

  747. what

  748. that

  749. is

  750. already

  751. so

  752. let's

  753. take a few

  754. minutes

  755. just to

  756. praise

  757. to
